imagine with me, if you will, a nwh potential fix-it involving none other than the multiverse saving duo deadpool and wolverine.
i know, i know - but please, let me cook.
wade and logan now jump across timelines to "fix" things aka travel the multiverse for funsies and deal with the consequences later and somehow end up in a universe where peter parker doesn't exist, but spider-man does. and wade, blessed with the power of "i know this for the plot", immediately knows that is bull. shit. and sure enough, they find one very depressed, very lonely, and very jaded peter parker.
after much annoyance, light stalking, and following spider-man while he's on patrol, they get peter to spill how he ended up in this situation. and after hearing everything, logan breaks the silence with a simple, yet effective: "shit, kid. that... shit."
"yeah, well... now you know, so you can, like, leave me alone."
"nope, not gonna happen." wade shakes his head and tactfully ignores logan's imploring look of what-the-fuck-are-you-getting-us-into-now "i take my job as marvel jesus very, very seriously, so frankly, this is my job to fix your sorry little life, buddy. and if flat-out telling them you exist didn't work, then - "
"oh, i actually... i never told them."
"...come again?"
"i tried to tell them, but i couldn't. so..."
"i'm sorry... your best friend and girlfriend were crying, telling you to come find them and remind them of you, and you chose not to?"
"they're happy and safe without me! i wasn't going to ruin - "
"oh my god. you sweet, self sacrificial, idiot spider-baby. okay! we can fix this! we're no tony stark, but consider us your pseudo daddies for the time being, kid. let's get you your life back."
which is how one very emotional and determined deadpool, followed by a stoic, nonchalant wolverine (who, in all honesty, probably should be completely against this, but once wade commits to something, he can't be talked out of it, and the sooner he gets his fix from this the sooner he can go home, so fuck it we ball), end up in a certain cafe, all up in a poor barista and her friend's face with a cut-out yearbook photo of some kid, yelling "LOOK AT HIM! LOOK AT THIS BOY! HE'S SO LONELY! LIKE A SMALL, FORLORN, VICTORIAN CHILD! REMEMBER HIM, GODDAMMIT!"
(their efforts result in two confused and scared teens, and getting kicked out of said cafe.)
peter practically begs them to just leave him alone, that this was his choice, and he's fine with it, but both wade and logan know a lie when they hear one. they both know what being alone can do to a person, and peter is just a kid who got dealt the shittiest cards in life and at this point, it just feels wrong to leave him here without trying to do something. and maybe they both have a small soft spot for the teen, so what?
and peter knows both men can see through his broody, teenage angst front he's been putting up since the spell, and he's tried so hard to hate the two of them, get them to hate him so they would leave, but they're not budging, so really, there's no point in trying to push them away, right?
and so, he lets them in. he learns that while logan is stoic and intense and kinda terrifying, he's also someone who just wants to do the right thing for the people he cares about. he's also lost people, and he blames himself, but he's come out on the other side. he would tell peter about his daughter, laura, who wouldn't let him wallow in self pity because she is good, better than he has ever been. he never saw himself as a father, but she's still around, so he must be doing alright.
and at first hearing it would result in a pang in his chest, memories of thai food after walking into a smoke-filled kitchen, assurances that things will work out when everything feels hopeless, a tombstone that can never convey everything she was, but now... it's nice to hear that logan still had someone after losing everyone.
so, peter listens to logan's stories. in return, peter tells logan all about his mom.
and wade was brash and loud and conceded and really, really annoying, but he's... no, that's it. he's all of those things, but in a weird way, it's like all those bad qualities merge together to make him a good guy. and yeah, he can walk away at any point, he has absolutely no obligation to help peter, but he does it anyway.
("nonono, don't you dare make me some selfless hero type, kid. i know for a fact that every deadpool has a peter. i'm doing this for the me in your world."
"you're... huh?"
"bottom line, i'm a selfish bastard. i'm doing this for me, 'kay?")
peter didn't fight it. he's had experience with seemingly self-absorbed, deflecting type heroes.
wade doesn't replace him, not even close, but... still.
maybe peter will never get back what he lost. but, for the first time, peter sees a light at the end of the tunnel. that, maybe, he can stop being just spider-man, and he can start being peter parker again, too.
(and if there's a barista talking to her friend about how it's weird that two guys would show up holding a photo of an odd customer from weeks ago, demanding they remember him, and despite not knowing him she felt something, and her friend couldn't help but agree, well... that's neither here nor there.)

So, my friend sent this tiktok (I’m gonna reblog with the link) about Spider-Man, they were pointing out how Peter Parker's way snarkier and less of an innocent "teddy bear" in the comics. And that’s true (but tbh it’s not the only characterization of Comic!Peter atp but I digress) but when we’re talking about MCU Spider-Man we gotta be careful about Peter’s characterization and here’s why:
The movies aren't standalone-ish, like the Raimi or Webb movies could be; they're super tied into the whole MCU universe which totally shapes how Peter acts (no matter how much people want to deny this), albeit this is somewhat of an obvious fact, it needs to be said tho.
Think about Far From Home and No Way Home; they're basically part 1 and 2 of a bigger story happening over just a couple months. And all of it is kicking off after Endgame. Like I said, you can't ignore Peter's time in the Avengers movies; it's all part of his arc and important for understanding Peter's headspace. You have probably heard countless times that he's “written better” in Civil War, IW and Endgame but why’s that? And no, it’s not bc of the damn Russos; it’s because he’s not weighed down by immense trauma/stress yet. He's just locked in, quippy, and giving it his all to help hence why his “true” personality can shine through. But then IW happens, and boom; he's snapped away for five years, comes back to a messed up world, has to fight in this insane battle and Tony dies. No wonder he's not cracking jokes left and right in FFH. The guy's dealing with loss and way too much responsibility for a teenager, and all of these aspects get EVEN worse in NWH, hence why we see a very dark and angry Peter, and almost uncharacteristic side, in the last fight
This is where my theory comes in, and it has a lot to do with those deleted scenes from FFH and NWH. Take the To-Do List sequence from FFH; Peter's using his wit and tech to get his passport faster, selling his toys for cash, bantering with Mr. Delmar. He’s broke, smart and sassy; quite true to the comics basically. Then in NWH, there's that extended interrogation scene where he's snarky with the cops and more crime fighting where he interacts with citizens (also known as the deleted Harry scene lmao). These scenes scream comic-book Peter and are almost reminiscent of HoCo as well which we also know some love to call the more “accurate” movie out of the trilogy, but here's the kicker; these scenes didn't make it into the movies. Some of them are so short, like the interrogation bit, that cutting them for time just doesn’t make much sense to me. Also the To-Do List sequence includes that Iron Spider fight scene in a restaurant (pretty sure he’s taking out a gang there), the DVD version has fewer quips even than the extended version that was shown in theaters, and you can even tell that they edited them out; Peter's moving like he's talking, but there’s no sound. It's almost like this was done on purpose…👀 (I mean, duh…)
So, why cut all this stuff? Sure, runtime's a thing, and yeah, extended cuts are cash grabs, but I think there's more to it. My theory is that the whole trilogy wasn't about showing us the "true" Peter; the smart and therefore borderline arrogant hero we know from the comics. It was SOLELY about putting him through the wringer and showing his struggles. Those deleted scenes? They're like little hints of who Peter really is at his core, but Marvel and Sony held back on putting any emphasis on them so the focus could stay on the bs he’s going through. It also explains why some fans feel so overprotective of him and project this “cuddly” personality onto him; the guy in the tiktok is blaming Raimi’s version, which I also agree with but the MCU trilogy’s chosen narrative has also contributed to this. It's like they're saving the “full, comic-accurate” Peter for later; where he's finally past all this mess and can just be Spider-Man, quips and all. The last part of the NWH’s script also strongly suggests this: “Soars over the Rockefeller Christmas Tree with a newfound sense of freedom. Liberated from having to juggle two lives. Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man lives on…”
All of this is also why I think it’s unfair to judge MCU Spider-Man’s personality too much before this next movie comes out; it’s like in real life, you’d rather look at an adult version of a person to judge their character instead of the minor/teenage version of them. Especially when you know that that latter time of their life was filled with chaotic and horrific events that were also character defining for them.
I could be totally off, and I definitely don’t want to give Sony nor Marvel/Disney too much credit. They’re greedy mfers after all. But the way these deleted scenes consistently show a more “classic Peter” and how they're saved for special releases, feels very intentional in hindsight and again, I hate to admit this. Like they know fans eat this stuff up and it’s almost like they were dangling it over everyone’s heads like “we know this is accurate but you’ll have to wait a bit more to see it in its’ full glory :))”
Anyway, that's my take. Could it be a reach? Yes, absolute but one thing is definitely true; the trilogy was all about Peter growing up through insane challenges. And if it was possibly setting the stage for a future where we'll see him as a mature and more comic-accurate Spider-Man will be revealed when the next movie drops. Fingers crossed the writers and Destin respect the ending of NWH and have those deleted scenes at the back of their minds cause they're right there, most of us have seen them and most importantly; we liked what we saw.

(i was reminded of this opinion that ive had for years now; bc i just saw a Peter Parker and Aunt May edit, including all their adaptations, but this is mainly directed at the MCU Spider-man, Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider-man, and the general trend of making Aunt May younger and overall less sickly. this has nothing to do with the quality of those adaptations and their story)
if y'all want to make Aunt May young and hot, i am completely okay with that
but i do also want The People In Charge who decide how young/old Aunt May is to know WHY it matters that she was this old lady to begin with: and that's because Peter doesn't want to tell Aunt May his secret identity due to, not only how much she hates Spider-man, but bc she has a bad heart and is a frail person and he is worried the news will kill her
if you dont do that last part especially, it makes no sense why he is SO desperate for her specifically to never know, which then translates further to why he doesn't want the public to know his secret bc what if the news kills Aunt May
if you want to make Aunt May young and sexy, go ahead. but i specifically need y'all to make that hot Aunt May be chronically ill and disabled. give her a port, you can incorporate an Apple Watch heart-monitor ad even, you can make her an ambulatory mobility-aid user, give her mobile IV therapy, a medical alert dog, whatever you want. but you gotta keep her delicate and frail and have Peter be concerned about her health. it isn't enough for her to have 1 or 10 wrinkles. give me actual "he is worried about her health and he has good reason to be concerned about it" scenes and details
i personally prefer if you also keep in that she hates Spider-man, because i think Aunt May and J. Jonah Jamison play important roles of accountability and how "even people who hate you (or hate a part of you, hate what you do, however you want to spin it) can still be, ultimately, on your side and care about you". because my favorite Spider-man runs/adaptations are the ones where Jamison and Aunt May will defend Peter in a room he isn't in. they won't for Spider-man. but for Peter? of course, he's a good kid. but, to them, Spider-man needs to be held more accountable (and ill stop there because otherwise i will ramble about my favorite ways Jamison and Aunt May hating Spider-man in front of Peter then betters Spider-man as a hero). and it also teaches Peter as Spider-man to humanize the people who hate him, to still want to protect indiscriminately, even protect the people who hate him or take his efforts for granted. because even if they might hate you, there's a p likely chance those haters are still good people
but, sure, Aunt May finding out about Spider-man and supporting Peter as Spider-man is cute, ill admit that. it is nice to see Peter be comforted and have her be stronger than he gave her credit for
and im not terribly opposed to see Aunt May support both sides of Peter (id argue that should moreso be on Harry, MJ, and his other friends and love-interests. as Aunt May hating Spider-man but loving Peter unconditionally is more interesting a dynamic, to me. but, sure, it's nice to see Aunt May support Spider-man before she even knows that's Peter, it's an adorable small-win for Peter, sure)
but more people gotta keep in that Peter— when Aunt May doesn't know that he is Spider-man, regardless of if she likes Spider-man or not— Peter is scared out of his mind to lose the one last family member he has that's alive, who is sweet and wonderful to him, but who is also so much more fragile than his friends and love interests to the point that he's petrified the shock of learning he is Spider-man will KILL HER. not even just villains coming after her, no, scared that THE NEWS itself will KILL HER. and it was a recurring thing in the comics that the shock and stress DID cause her health problems with her heart to flare up so much that Peter would have to go to her hospital-bed and— and btw, she would indeed get a LOT physically better after this— Peter would have to tell her "no, Aunt May, the news isn't true, i'm not Spider-man, i promise", y'know, like a liar. bc the idea of Aunt May finding out freaks him out for a REASON. and if you don't want to do that hospital-bed-liar scene, you don't have to, People In Charge, you can do "the stress of Uncle Ben dying and the funeral landed her under emergency care for a few weeks" or "i remember when Uncle Ben got fired and how that stress made her flare-up to being practically bedridden until he got a new job" or something. he just needs validity to his fear about her health, he needs validity for him being scared the news and stress will kill her, even if she turns out to be fine when he finally tells her. because it adds so much conflict, nuance, and tension to his story, and it makes me sad when Aunt May's poor health is erased from the narrative. it needs to haunt him that him not being Spider-man killed his Uncle Ben, and him being Spider-man might kill his Aunt May next
