Mountain Chicken a.k.a. White-lipped Frog (Leptodactylus fallax), family Leptodactylidae, Dominica

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.

Once found on five major Caribbean islands, this endangered frog is now only found on the island of Dominica and a small protected area on Montserrat.

This frog is endangered due to over harvesting as a food item, volcanic eruptions, habitat destruction, and most notably, the Chytrid fungus.

The common name comes from the fact that the meat… tastes like chicken. Allegedly.

This is a large frog, growing to a maximum snout vent length of 20 cm

Mountain chicken day!

It’s september 13th, which means it is Mountain chicken day, and in honor of that here are som fantastic mountain chickens and some fun facts:

Their latin/science name is Leptodactyllus fallax

they Big™, can weight up to 1 kg (!!). This is a mountain chicken with a small treefrog on its back for comparison 

They can eat snakes, spiders, other frogs and even bats! 

They’re very good parents that spend a lot of their time taking care of their children

They’re really really talkative and make lots of noises
