#1258 Why do some dragonflies migrate so far?

Why do some dragonflies migrate so far? Some species of dragonfly migrate a long way because of temperature and other triggers. How they do it is probably more interesting than why they do it. There are two species of dragonfly that we are going to look at today. The first species is called the Green Darner and they migrate roughly 1,000 km from North America down towards Mexico. The second species is called the Pantala flavescens and it migrates about 18,000 km, with the 6,000 km across the Indian Ocean from Africa to India being done in one journey. We have looked at other insects that have incredibly long migrations as well. The Monarch butterfly is a very famous one. Both of these dragonfly undertake a multi-generational migration. This is different to most species that migrate, birds for example, where one animal makes a yearly migration throughout its life. These dragonfly take a number of generations to make their journey. The Green Darner takes three generations to make its journey. The first generation are born in the south and migrate north during the spring and summer. The second generation are born in the north at the end of the summer and migrate south through the autumn. Then the third generation are born in the south in the winter and they don’t migrate. The fourth generation migrate and start the cycle again. The Pantala flavescens (also known as the globe wanderer) also takes several generations to make its trip. However, one single generation make the incredible flight between Africa and India. They do this by flying up into the trade winds and soaring with the wind. They are some of the highest flying insects and have been spotted at over 6,000 m. It is interesting how scientists worked out that these dragonflies were multi-generational migratory dragonflies. The same dragonfly could be observed in many different areas, but that didn’t mean that it was migrating. You can often see the same insect in more than one place. Scientists worked out that it was a different generation because they analyzed the amount of hydrogen in its wings. They were able to get specimens from museums and they caught a lot of live dragonflies as well. They realized that the different samples had different types of hydrogen. Dragonflies lay their eggs in the stems of leaves or plants that are near to water. When the eggs hatch, the larvae drop into the water and they live there, getting larger, for the next couple of years. Because they grow in the water, the dragonfly larvae pick up hydrogen from the water and scientists realized that water in different places has different types of hydrogen. There is a heavy form of hydrogen called hydrogen-2 and it changes in quantity as you go from the north to the south in America. Scientists could analyze the quantity of this element in the dragonflies and see where they were born.   Scientists have been trying to figure out what triggers the dragonflies to migrate and they think it might be down to the temperature. There isn’t necessarily a difference between the generation that fly north, the generation that fly south, and the generation that don’t fly at all. The difference is in the environment and not in the insects themselves. The dragonflies that are in the south start to fly north when the temperature reaches 9℃. And the dragonflies that are in the north start to fly south when the temperature falls to 9℃. Presumably, the third generation don’t fly north or south because the temperature doesn’t hit 9℃. If there was a sudden drop in the temperature, the generation that don’t migrate might suddenly start to fly. Dragonflies have sensory cells in their wings and antennae which can detect temperature and humidity. These sensory cells in the wings can also detect strain, pressure, and air flow. Dragonflies use them to detect prey and to navigate. Pantela flavescens have a multi-generational migration pattern as well, but the first part of their flight is carried out by one generation and is the longest single migratory flight of any insect. They fly up into the moist high-altitude trade winds. They have many adaptations to help them fly so far. They have bumps and protrusions on their wings that give them more lift and reduce drag. They also have larger wings than other dragonflies. Their wings are a slightly different shape, and they can be fixed in place, which means the dragonflies can glide without wasting energy. They are perfectly evolved to travel long distances. Sonic Mini-Comic: "Shadow Generations: Chaos Island"

After about three weeks it's finally done! A short portfolio piece! Any of you who've been following me long enough know that the prospect of Sonic and Shadow meeting on Chaos Island intrigued me. Finally put words into story. I hope you enjoy!

Sorry for not posting anything in months only to return to say I'm very much in my Sonic era now and it's all Shadow's fault ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oh and Tails is here too because he's been my fave Sonic character since I was a kid, right up until a few weeks ago when Shadow said "this is my year" and surpassed him.

So obviously that has left me stuck thinking about their relationship, or kinda lack thereof in canon besides the whole Attack On Sight joke, and that one idea of Tails reminding Shadow of Maria, and yeah :')

Twisted Target - Killing Game AU

[CW: Death, Gore(? in future content)] *Subject to change

In an alternate timeline, after the events of Ch. 6 and before Ch. 7, S.T.Y.X. is granted permission to run a simulation on the overblottees (including Idia) for a rehab program. That simulation gets hacked, and is changed into a killing game. All the real players are Riddle, Leona, Azul, Jamil, Vil, and Idia. The rest of the 21 players (or more) are extremely convincing simulacrum of NRC students*. The simulacra are neutral players, simply programmed to fill slots and prolong the game when needed. The total number of players is unknown, and new simulacra may be added occasionally. Simulacra are unmarked and cannot be told apart from real players.

*Another real player may be brought into the game, and gets revived as a simulacrum after elimination or vice versa, starting out as a simulacrum then their real counterpart is forced to join the game.

The premise of the game is simple, everyone is given one target to eliminate and one to protect in secret. Players can be eliminated if they are killed in game, or the target they’re protecting is revealed*.

*If a player thinks they know who another is protecting, they have one chance to make a declaration before the next round. There are no consequences for a wrong guess. The targets remain the same each round, so there may be another chance.

The rules of the game get more complex when two or more players share the same target (to eliminate/protect). Some players can be doomed from the start if they have a paradoxical target.

Paradoxical targets:

• A: A that player must eliminate themselves and protect themselves. They can be protected by others, which stop them from their goal of eliminating themselves. (Best Strategy: Wait out the rounds until you’re one of the two players left.)

• B: The player must eliminate and protect the same exact person.

• C: Player A must protect Player B, but Player B must eliminate Player A.

Each round will conclude when at least one player is eliminated. If nobody is out of the game by a certain timeframe, then a loser is randomly chosen.

The game will run until a winning pair is recognized. A winning pair includes a player and the one they’re protecting as the last players standing, regardless if the protected player’s conditions are met (failed to eliminate/protect their target). If a winning pair does not emerge by the time two or less players are left, new players are brought in until there is a winning pair.

“Sure, if that’s what’ll motivate you to participate and not wait for RNG to randomly pick y’all off.”

• What’s with these janky rules and loopholes?! What’s the point in playing if you’re set to lose?

“It’d be boring if everything is clean and organized.”

• What happens if one of those imposters win?

“Then they win. Sucks to lose to an NPC.”

Cuts to this overly-enthused announcer narrating the whole thing, and we zoom out again to see this being watched on a fancy flatscreen in a fancy modern livingroom by a couple of equally enthused Vulcan girls- it’s basically wwe

Ohhh I love this! You were VERY brave, look at all that fine line work. I love it when people on tumblr give compliments about lines. They say things like “I want to eat it” or “your lines are so crunchy and greebled” and so on.

For many years I did not know what to say about babies, when other people showed me their babies. Eventually I learned about the primary considerations of babies, and therefore, what to look for when observing and reporting on them. For example, if it’s very young and holds its head up well, commenting that the baby is clearly very advanced and clever is an excellent observation, when a basic reaction of “cute!” only convinces the most deluded or besotted parents. Human babies are mostly not cute, exactly, and if they aren’t deluded or besotted or sleep deprived, the parents can tell if you are lying or uninterested.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say here is that I love these lines a lot, even if I don’t understand why or how to compliment them. They remind me of illustrations that you would look at for a long time as a kid because they had unexpected detail in them. There is also something inexplicable in the slightly organic curve of the spiked collars and the observation of the jaw of the skull that feels familial to me. It’s very very similar genetically to how myself and my younger sibling think about those things and it reminds me of my sibling’s art.

Anyway, thank you so much. I find this compelling, as if you are a cousin, or as if I commissioned this in an alternate life. I would compliment this baby by saying it “looks like an old soul.”
