thinking about eleanor shellstrop realizing she's genderqueer when chidi is giving her a lesson or something, and he accidentally calls her "they"
she stops him in the middle of a sentence, and she's like "hmm. that was weird but i didn't hate it... continue." and chidi is just a bit perplexed, and continues on with his lesson
but, eleanor doesn't let it go. she keeps bringing it up at gatherings, at dinners, at hangouts. she's always like "hey, remember that time you called me 'they'? wasn't that crazy?"
and one of the times she mentions it one-on-one with chidi, he's like "hey... you know that's something you can ask people to do, right? you know you can ask people to call you they. you know, like your pronouns?"
and eleanor is like "well... i mean yeah (she didn't know that) but also i'm fine with 'she' too..."
and chidi basically has to explain that gender is a spectrum and a bunch of stuff about gender and pronouns, and he ends up having janet give eleanor a book on nonbinary identities and that's when everything clicks for her
#i feel like she's soooo neutral about gender#also she's always wearing button ups that has to be worth some nonbinary points or something#anyways#the good place#nonbinary eleanor shellstrop#genderqueer eleanor shellstrop#queer headcanons#the good place headcanons

Hi Noa. What is The Good Place actually about. Like I know what the good place/bad place is but I am realizing that I do not know like. The actual story being told.
Also I'm pretty sure my library has it on DVD so in your biased opinion should that be the next thing I watch when I finish Succession this week?
WATCH THE GOOD PLACE!!!
it is the best show in my opinion. out of all of them. it scores 10/10 for comedy, intelligence, messaging, character arcs, all of it.
the plot of the show is that eleanor shellstrop, self-proclaimed arizona dirtbag, dies, and ends up in "the good place." there's one problem: michael, the good place architect running the neighborhood she's living in, seems to believe that she was an activist who was feeding children in war-torn countries, or something. there's been a mix up!! now it's her, and her soulmate, chidi anagonye, against the world. chidi was a philosophy professor in life, raised in senegal, then moved to australia at somepoint (even tho he has an igbo name and the igbo people are native to nigeria and not senegal, but I digress). chidi has the worst anxiety ever and frets over every single choice he has to make. he's a strict kantian, and does not ever lie. so when his soulmate tells him "hey so I'm not actually your soulmate I'm a girl from arizona!!" he completely freaks out.
rounding out the main six you have:
tahani al-jamil: an extremely wealthy british socialite who made philanthropy her personality in life, but not because she cared about the causes she donated to, she just wanted her parents to like her and not give all their attention to her artistic sister kamilah
jianyu the monk: a monk who's taken a vow of silence. definitely a monk. definitely named jianyu.
michael: the good place architect running his very first neighborhood! he's trying to make sure everything runs smoothly and his residents are all as happy as possible
janet: michael's not-a-robot not-a-girl assistant. she runs the neighborhood and gets residents anything they need. she also knows literally everything. she starts off highly robotic and has an amazing character arc throughout the show.
DO NOT. AND I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. GO LOOKING FOR POSTS OR ANYTHING ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE. THERE ARE SOME MAJOR SPOILERS AND YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT YOUR FIRST VIEWING TO BE RUINED!!
that is, assuming, you haven't already seen the major spoilers.
you're gonna wanna watch it twice, btw. not back to back. because everything that's built up in s1 and s2 are resolved beautifully in s3 and s4, and you won't catch all of those things the first time.
basically the good place has everything. it's hilarious. it has the best writing. it's tight as fuck. it's the tightest writing I've ever seen. the actors are phenomenal. there's beautiful love stories but not everyone ends up with a partner. janet is canonically nonbinary, and you don't have to like, read too deeply to get that michael is aroace and kind of repulsed by all of that stuff. eleanor is canonically bisexual. ted danson's tummy is quite visible pressing up against his silly little suits for the entire show. there is nothing more you could want.

Pop! Pride 2.0 with canonically LGBT+ characters ... plus Brendon Urie, real-life pansexual icon.
There either aren't as many male characters, or I just gravitated more toward the women. 🤷

Everything is fine. Except the gay panic.
Obviously, none of this is canon; just my own theory/self-indulgence.
Eleanor has shown interest in both men and women in the show and is fanonly accepted as being bi.
Chidi has said he’s not gay nor bi, and considering his indecisive nature, this makes sense (He cant decide so he likes everyone).
Janet=Not a robot, not a girl. Voila: A non-binary entity of information.
Please do not repost!

If you've known me long enough you know I did a cheesey christmas special staring these guys, Santa's Gendeers! These are icons you can use for free, based on some old ones I decided needed a style update.
For a long while I kept the Gendeers animation in private because I have been made fun of before about the designs (cus they're LGBT related ofc). But recently I've gained the courage to put it back into public view! We need to come together and create more LGBT media, and I don't believe there's any for holiday specials. So I did my best with what I have. Me and the people who worked on the video had so much fun, and I did my best to show a message during Rudolph's speech <3
Come watch it over here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbu6TNX9NAY

since we're discussing LGBT rep in cartoons, can i just say how annoying it is that lgbt protagonists (out of the few we have) are always bi leaning towards the opposite gender, or a lesbian that never shows attraction to girls other than a few times? Why can't we have a protagonist that's a gay guy? maybe a trans hero? honestly if we don't get one eventually i'll be the first to write one, y'all can't stop me.
i actually find it’s almost always the opposite for bi characters. 99% of the time they end up in same sex relationships (both korra and asami; valencia from crazy ex girlfriend; presumably luz from the owl house; rosa diaz from b99, since she came out as bi has only dated women i think; clarke griffin from the 100; petra from jane the virgin; magnus from the shadowhunter series; toni and cheryl from riverdale; david from schitt’s creek altho he’s pan, not bi; etc.) to the point i was pleasantly surprised when darryl - also from crazy ex girlfriend - did end up with a woman after an amicable breakup with his first boyfriend. and that we were having a bi male character since as you can see, there’s very few of them
the only one i can really think of that fits your description is eleanor shellstrop from the good place, but that’s mostly in her attractions for tahani and simone (and i’m not going to knock the show for her being very committed and loving with a dark skinned black man who is also sensitive and brave and thoughtful and loving with her; again, lgbt rep isn’t everything).
as for lesbians, there’s alex and maggie from supergirl; amity from the owl house; pearl, ruby, sapphire, and bismuth from steven universe; even janai and amaya from the dragon prince; elena from one day at a time; either a bi or a gay girl or both from “the loud house”; shows like “orange is the new black” and lots of other live action ones i’m sure
there’s also a ton of gay men in media. that’s 75% of rep right there. alec from shadow hunters; love simon; atypical; love victor; castiel from supernatural, lmao. and there’s more than a few cartoon characters too. ben from kipo and adam from the hollow are both male leads (adam is the Main Protagonist and ben is part of the main trio) who say “i’m gay” on screen - and both are boys of colour.
so yeah, you definitely wouldn’t be the first there by a long shot, luckily
the areas where rep is definitely falling short is trans characters, although nonbinary is starting to see an uptick (syd from one day at a time; garnet, shep, and stevonnie from steven universe; double trouble from she ra; kazi from the dragon prince; mo from zoey’s extraordinary playlist)
but honestly, i’m not holding my breath representation wise. i’m never gonna see myself - all aspects of my queerness - until i write it myself, so - eventually, someday
#the pan ace aro spec agender experience#thanks for asking#representation#aka i do not know what tv you watch but we are watching very different things lmao#creature-from-your-algebra-class

favorite female & nb characters!
All right, last week @maculategiraffe tagged me for this delightful meme, and now I’m finally getting around to it! I’m going to follow her excellent example in not merely listing but also rhapsodizing somewhat about each of my faves.
Rules: Name your top ten favorite female or nonbinary characters from different fandoms. Tag ten people.
I think Joss Carter held first place on my list for a similar meme a while back, but I can’t help it, I still love her. She didn’t bend. Her entire life story was of repeatedly colliding with unjust and broken systems, from the US Army to her own marriage, and refusing to accept their failings. Of course, since this was Person of Interest, her workarounds weren’t always legal, but Taraji P Henson always made me believe that it was in service of some higher standard, some blazing better world that was yet to be. She always snarked with the best of them, too.
Kate Reed of the short-lived USA series Fairly Legal was just as tenacious but far less organized, a female counterpart to countless male protagonists who break every rule and social norm, but with a disarming smile, so of course they end up winning in the end. She starts the series out grieving, half-divorced, and having just launched on a major career shift, but she's as undaunted by her own pain as she is by any other obstacle, determined to slip past or scrabble over top it in order to find the happy ending she knows is almost within reach, and that’s what makes her unforgettable, for me.
Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy is populated almost entirely by nonbinary characters, most of whom are human, but as much as I love Breq’s stoic relentless Breqness, for this meme I’m going to list Mercy of Kalr, the spaceship who saw Breq and wanted her for a captain -- even though no one asks ships their opinions about these things -- and combines all of the virtues of ships (polite, restrained, tactically passive-aggressive) and, ultimately, of citizens as well. My favorite cinnamon roll ever to fly through space, by far.
Annalise Keating of How to Get Away with Murder is a terrible person, and I love her desperately. She’s manipulative, compassionate, vulnerable, implacable. She juggles a dozen disasters at any given time and keeps more of them up in the air than anyone else ever could. She gets to ignore repeated warnings and give voice to her outrage and, despite being a black woman in America, still win. She is the center about which the show revolves and without which it could not possibly exist. And it doesn’t hurt any that she’s also proof that Viola Davis deserves every damn award.
Eleanor Shellstrop is an asshole, plain and simple. She might or might not be the first to admit it, but if she wasn’t, she would defiantly agree just to make sure the first person realized that noticing that pretty obvious fact didn’t give them any kind of hold over her. She’s selfish. The only reason she even tries to change is to avoid punishment. But she does change. I love her because she loves herself, and because Kristen Bell is kind of a genius, and because of the genuinely beautiful things The Good Place says through her progress. She’s fantastic.
Do I even need to speak in praise of Joan Watson? She, along with a refreshingly empathetic iteration of Sherlock Holmes, is what makes Elementary Elementary. I love that she’s both principled and pragmatic, that she’s compassionate and dispassionate at once. I love how many times she’s reinvented herself, and how driven she is, no matter what she does, to do it well. I admit I’m a little confused about why the show has decided to give her an adoption storyline, but at the same time, I love every single thing about it so far. I love that the life she lives is exactly her own.
Faris Nallaneen is the protagonist of Caroline Stevermer’s novel A College of Magics, and she breaks my heart. Heir to a small Ruritanian polity and sent by her wicked uncle to the titular college, she is sardonic, iron-willed, passionately devoted to her people -- and living in a world that is so much bigger and more terrible than she is, and which she will fight with everything she has in her to save what is hers to defend. Looking only at its outline, her story could have easily been silly or slight. It is neither of those things, and she’s strong enough to bear it -- even though, at the same time, she is so young.
Sulla Pinsky of O Human Star is even younger, and as a humanoid robot in a world whose human population is still adjusting to the existence of artificial intelligence, she’s got her own share of struggles. Making friends after a life lived in secret, for example. Or deciding which secrets to keep for fear of being rejected, and which to share so that she can be loved as who she really is. She’s by turns enthusiastic and shy, skittish and utterly brave. She has that wisdom of youth that sees what is wrong in the world and meets it with unflagging hope. I love her so much.
Kel Cheris of Yoon Ha Lee’s Machineries of Empire series... what do I even say about Cheris? Absurdly brave, but that’s Kel for you. Absolutely brilliant at math, but it’s not like the story gives concrete examples, or like I could have appreciated them if it had. She’s kind to robot servitors. She’s kind to the ghost that takes up residence in her mind. I could say that she does her best in a world of terrible cruelties, and that’s true, but I also feel like that’s missing the point in some strange way; hers isn’t really the kind of story you can tie up in an inspirational bow. But I love that she is kind.
And then there’s Murderbot, of The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, who is probably the most relatable of any of these characters. I’ve only read the first novella so far, but Murderbot leaves a hell of an impression: part bot, part organic, and 100% socially anxious media fan. Why do these humans keep wanting to talk? Why does plot keep getting in the way of binge watching the best drama of all time, Sanctuary Moon? Murderbot is intensely awkward, chronically cranky, occasionally heroic, and really doesn’t want you to take that last as an excuse to try and interact. I could not ask for more in a protagonist.
I’m going to skip the tagging step because I’ve worn myself out with how much I love all of these amazing fictional people, but please, if you’d like to play, consider yourself tagged! I love hearing about people’s faves!
#please don't hold me to this list#it's not like there are so few amazing characters#that i can review them all in search for the best#these are ten favorites of mine#not my ten favorites#if you see what i mean#meme#long post#books#maculategiraffe

The wonderful @sherpawhale tagged me in a pick your fav ask game, so here I go. This is gonna be a hard one though. I mean, 1 character? Just 1 for each fandom?
Rules: List ten of your favorite female characters in different fandoms and then tag ten as many people as you want.
So in no particular order:
1. Donna Noble - Doctor Who. I nearly said Bill Potts here because the important part for me is how they are friends of the Doctor with no annoying romantic stuff. But Donna did it first, and loudest so she gets the spot.
2. Morgana Pendragon - Merlin. Take a wild guess. I am gay af for Katie McGrath. But also no matter how much the journey hurts watching her go from pure cinnamon roll to charred cinnamon roll is freaking amazing.
3. Scatty (Scáthach) - The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. The dual wielding, king making, vegetarian, vampire. Overall she’s not even in the series that much but damn the woman made an impression on 14 year old me.
4. Michael Burnham - Star Trek Discovery. Sonequa Martin-Green‘s performance as Burnham is breath taking, and the character has so much potential.
5. Eleanor Shellstrop - The Good Place. She’s an asshole and it’s fantastic.
6. Parphie. No. Soker. FUCK. SOPHIE DEVEREAUX AND PARKER - Leverage. I CAN’T CHOSE ONE OK. I DAMN NEAR SAID HARDISON AS WELL AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A LIST OF FEMALE CHARACTERS! I LOVE ALL OF THEM!
7. Minerva McGonagall - The Harry Potter Series. She’s a fucking badass who loves and cares for her students. For Example:
"My grandmother thinks Charms is a soft option," mumbled Neville.
"Take Charms," said Professor McGonagall, "and I shall drop Augusta a line reminding her that just because she failed her Charms O.W.L., the subject is not necessarily worthless."
8. Erza Scarlet - Fairy Tail. This changes from week to week tbh but I mostly come back to Erza. She’s freaking awesome. And both of her VA’s are talented af.
9. Alex Danvers - Supergirl. I jump between her and Cat. We get to see Alex more often these days so Alex gets the win. Her facial expressions, and her shenanigans in the background, and her whole big sister thing with like EVERYONE is great stuff. Great. Stuff.
10. Jasmine - Deltora Quest. I love her so much. My precious forest child.
AHHHHHHH I want more. And multiples. AHHHHH.
Ok. Okay. 10 people yeah? No pressure tagging:
@lexa-kom-skaikru, @ussjellyfish, @mediumhadroncollider, @yumanaa, @idonotfondue, @bethanyactually, @namesaretoomuchpressure, @pastel-nonbinary, @rainbowunihog, @argyle-s
