i firmly hold that it's my duty as a reader to believe it when an author tells me at the beginning of the series that the dragons are gone forever and never coming back. but god it's a struggle sometimes.

ngl, I'm beginning to take issue with how in conversations about anti-intellectualism almost automatically, the face of girls and women will be slapped on the problem.

The reason nobody can agree where the boundary between "visual novel" and "adventure game" lies is because the term "adventure game" originated in the American gaming industry and was later loaned into Japanese, while the term "visual novel" originated in the Japanese gaming industry and was later loaned into English, but the meanings shifted in both cases, so the American gaming industry uses "visual novel" to mean something different from what it means in Japan and the Japanese gaming industry uses "adventure game" to mean something different from what it means in America, and now we've got two terms with (at least) four separate definitions between them, but nerds on the Internet who don't understand how loan-words work keep trying to directly compare them without taking into account that there are multiple only partially compatible cultural idioms in play.

okay help i'm still stuck on a feeling that is like torture, but one which i cannot, will not, do not want to give up. he is straight up telling her that his feelings for her are killing him but if that's the price of loving her than so be it. like in the context of this scene colin has no clue that she reciprocates and in fact felt this way long before he did. other people have said this far more eloquently but he is putting literally everything on the line and opening himself up to the potential devastation of losing not only the love of his life but also his best friend. but he's saying you know what that's fine!! yeah i might lose you yeah i might have to watch you marry someone else yeah i might feel like dying every day for the rest of my life knowing i can't have you but none of that matters because it's you!! i'd rather love you and be miserable than not love you and be normal!!!! it's like how violet told anthony last season that she'd do it all again with edmund knowing she'd lose him because real love is worth it.

NEVER ask a peak lord about that one codependent homoerotic friendship from their teenage years
[ID: scum villain fanart of yue qingyuan and shen jiu as peak lords. yue qingyuan is colored blue, a sad expression on his face, while shen jiu is green and glares back at him. a flatlining heartbeat stretches between them, colored red. end ID]

“It’s not right to psychoanalyse an author’s morals by what they write” is obviously a good and valid stance but have you ever read a book by a male author who makes his thoughts on women so unpleasantly clear the moment a female character comes on page

it takes years for terry pratchett's books to get consistently good. I would argue that the series doesn't really hit its stride until Feet of Clay, which means that pratchett was writing and being published for 12 years before he found his groove.
and I genuinely can't imagine that. in part because I do think that pratchett's publication calendar looks different than what's expected of writers today---he had about 2 books published per year for his entire career. he must have been writing furiously, and the publisher must have relatively quickly gotten these to press.
but also....I just can't imagine any modern-day publisher keeping an author on their list for twelve years, unless that author is a prestige get or a constant presence on the bestseller list. And what does it say about the state of publishing that you can't go on publishing someone's good-but-not-revelatory books until they figure out what story they're trying to tell?

Reading Trash of the count's family and Debut or die at the same time is so funny sometimes.
In one book the MC curses, kidnap, rob, scam, beat up the bad guys at any given occasion but in the other he's like "these fucking bast-...,no let's calm down", I need to keep being level-headed.

There is no such thing as a truly original idea
Embrace your genre tropes. They’re what excite readers. You won’t be the first to use them, nor will you be the last. It’s how you use them that makes your work unique.

there is too much sword fighting in xianxia novels. i propose a main character who is completely average at swordplay but is skilled in hand to hand fighting. so they decide to use this as a trump card, and not really display their abilities.
bonus points if this scene is included:
opposition, pointing their sword at MC's throat : It's over. you have lost your sword, you are kneeling at my feet. i have won-
MC: wow your knees look really breakable down here
opposition: what

Coming on to the app just to remind people that one time when Cale ordered Choi Han to take off his clothes while Choi Han was stunned into silence.
“Choi Han.” “Yes sir. I will escort you if you plan on go-.” “Take it off.” Silence filled the room. Cale looked toward Choi Han, who was standing there with a blank expression, and started to frown. “What are you doing?” “Excuse me?” “Let’s change clothes.” “Ah.” Cale took off his robe and took off his formal jacket underneath as Choi Han let out that stupid sound.

DARLIN’ AND HER OTHER NAMES, PART 1: MARTA
The first installment of my new werewolf-western-horror-romance comic is available now on gumroad and itch.io!
www.darlincomic.com
90 pages, mature readers only.
DARLIN’ is intended for mature audiences. This comic contains elements which some readers may find distressing, including:
murder, gun violence, animal cruelty and animal death, blood, gore, body injury/horror, nudity, and language.
Please proceed mindfully.
Title designs by Binglin Hu.
(Thank you to friends, family, patrons and readers for your patience and support during the making of Part 1!
I also want to give my immense thanks to Tin House, Mineral School Artist Residency, Artist Trust and MacDowell for providing time, space and support during various stages of Part 1’s progress. It means the world to receive validation for this weird little self-published project.)

In 2011, I started writing a thing, on a whim. In 2013, I finished it. A lot of people seemed to love it? Then over the next decade, I put a lot of work into expanding and editing it, with plans for a complete physical book release that didn't happen. Well, here it is again. As an internet novel. A finished novel, this time.
I will start posting the story on May 21st, 2024. May 22nd will be a day of rest. And then, from May 23rd until October 21st, every day will see a new chapter-- a new log. ("F-Five months?? How long is this novel?" Oh yeah, good point. That won't actually get us to the end. There may be another eight, ten days of chapters afterwards. It is important, however, to emphasize the May 21 - October 21 model.)
I will make sure to put the bulk of the contents under "Read More" breaks, so each log won't clutter your browsing experience.
The logs will have art in them. Not as much as in the original draft, but there will still be some. As of May 1st, I expect art by Rappu, RealaChao, Wiratomkinder, and Vis.
I plan on supplementing the logs with the occasional post talking about the making and intention of the story. I dunno, it's gonna be a five-month distribution period, I'm gonna get antsy during that and am gonna want to ramble. That'll be separate content, though.
And when the story is fully and completely posted on tumblr, I will release the full novel on my Website, where I like to keep the rest of my creations. Both the tumblr novel and the Website novel will be free reading, forever. I reserve the right to try again at a paid physical edition afterwards.
So! That's it. Rapture is coming. OH GOD THE RAPTURE IS BURNING is coming.
Trigger Warnings: Sex, Gods, and Rock & Roll. (violence. some swear words. teenage angst, cringe. death. insects. surrealism. symbolism. unpredictability of what will be explained and what won't. sexual acts with dubious consent-- you will be able to skip that part. religious iconography. and so much prog rock.)
Get ready for it.

I think toxic romance should qualify as a subgenre as horror, and I can't stand horror nerds that don't believe in subgenres. Like the kind of people who think that anything that isn't oozing shock value and gore doesn't count as "real" horror. The kind of people who say Flowers In The Attic is a psychological thriller or tragedy instead of a horror-tragedy.
Like how is tragedy not horrifying???
What is not horrifying about children being locked up, starved to death, and so completely cut off from human interaction that they develop an incestuous bond as a coping mechanism???

Lock and Cale
What if Cale left Lock alone before the Battle of the Gorge of Death not only because he thinks being alone makes a Wolf stronger? Cale—no, KRS—became stronger and more reliable in some ways after he lost the Soos and became team leader, didn't he? 🥲
And then he gets to realize not everyone is like him. Lock didn't lose everyone this time. This Lock wasn't like TBoaH!Lock. Lock wasn't like Team Leader KRS either.
