“Hello New York!” Danny exclaimed, stepping forward and greeting the crowd. They screamed.
“Thank you so much! Hey, it’s great to be back! And have you met our newest Horsemen, the May sisters! Y/n and Lula!”
The audience cheered louder and you and Lula waved, bright smiles on both your faces. Danny grinned back at you with a wink.
  “Feels good right?”
  You nodded, “Yep.”
“Pretty good,” Lula said, walking across the stage, “Pretty good.”
Danny turned back to the audience and started to calm them, “Thank you, thank you.”
  The cheering quietened.
“Um, okay. We want to talk to you about your privacy. What does your privacy mean to you?”
“Because apparently to Owen Case, it means absolutely nothing,” Merritt continued.
The audience looked around nervously. Your smile widened as you moved to stand next to Danny.
“No actually, Merritt, it means less than absolutely nothing,” you said before addressing the audience, “You see, Owen’s mocked your privacy. He’s scorned it.”
Danny nodded, running a discreet hand down your back and loosening the tension in your shoulders. You tried not to blush in front of an audience of people.
“Right,” he continued, “and we’re not just talking about the things that you already agreed to when you signed probably without reading the terms and conditions of Octas 1 through 7.”
“So,” Lula began, “Before we start the show, we had Owen agree to a few terms of our own.”
You grinned at her, proud of her for reaching this dream. She looked so comfortable up there, talking to the audience. You were glad to be able to do it with her, too.
“So everything that he had once considered private…” Lula trailed off.
Your heart dropped to your stomach as her mic cut out. One glance at Danny told you he understood and he quickly walked over to Lula.
“Yeah, everything that he once considered private is now…” his mic cut off too.
“Shit,” you whispered, not bothering to mind your language as you assumed yours had cut off too.
The screen behind you flashed and white noise filled the theatre. People screamed.
“Oh my,” a computer-generated voice echoed through the room, “As the Horsemen like to say, magic is about controlling perception.”
You gazed up at the shifting face that appeared on the screen. Someone grabbed your arm gently and you turned to see Danny.
“Y/n!” He exclaimed, “Are you alright?”
You swallowed, fear piercing through you, “I… yeah. Yeah I’m okay. What’s going on, Danny?”
He shook his head, “I don’t know.”
“You see them as the champions of the truth,” the voice continued, “but are they? Or is that just another one of their illusions?”
“Shit shit shit,” Merritt was saying as he and Lula joined you and Danny in the middle of the stage, “Where’s Dylan?”
  “And Jack?” Lula added.
“So since they clearly love secrets, let’s reveal some of theirs.”
“Danny, everyone, get off the stage,” Dylan’s voice crackled through the coms, “Jack, go with them. I’ll see you at the meet up point.”
Danny’s hand moved down your arm and gripped yours. You squeezed his fingers in response.
“Let’s go,” he said, pulling you off the stage behind him.
The four of you began running, the voice echoing behind you clear as day.
“Do you recall the death of Jack Wilder? What if I told you he’s not just alive, but he’s actually right here.”
Jack’s alarmed face under his security cap was displayed on a screen you passed as you ran out of the backstage area.
“Dammit,” you heard Danny mutter. His hand was still firmly clasped around yours. Normally you would be bothered by the tightness, but adrenalin was coursing through your veins and you were just that desperate not to lose track of him in this chaos.
“And do you know who else is here? The FBI. Let’s let them in, shall we? And now for the big reveal…”
“Where’s the door to the roof?” Danny called to Jack as the younger man joined the group running to the meeting point.
“Take the next left then up the stairs,” Jack said.
“There’s a fifth Horseman, and he’s the biggest criminal of them all. FBI agent Dylan Rhodes.”
The five of you punched through the door to the roof.
“How the hell could this happen? I thought Dylan had everything under control!” Merritt yelled.
“Yeah. Apparently he didn’t,” Danny said, quietly frustrated in the way you knew he could get.
Merritt whirled on the illusionist, and something in his expression told you Danny wouldn’t like what he was about to say.
“Maybe you’re the leak, Dan. Where’ve you been sneaking off to?” Merritt demanded.
Danny let go of your hand and advanced on the mentalist, “Don’t you dare for a second insinuate that I had anything to do with this!”
“I’m not insinuating, that’s your-“ Merritt began to retort, but Jack cut in.
“Let’s get to the truck, come on!”
You all ran to the black tube. Danny nudged you in front of him, and you jumped in.
Gritting your teeth against the roller-coster sensation in your gut, you crossed your arms over your chest and noted with some curiosity the pulsing sound coming from the gaps in the tube.
You could also hear Jack sliding ahead of you and Danny behind you. After a moment you also heard Merritt screaming further back.
Then, with a thud you tumbled into a laundry basket.
“Wha…” you breathed, getting a split second to gaze around at your surroundings before Danny slammed into you.
“Oof,” he said, “Sorry. You okay?”
You winced, “Yeah. A little bruised, but I’ve had worse. You?”
He nodded as Lula and Merritt tumbled into the basket next to you, “Yeah. What the hell is going on?”
“Wasn’t there supposed to be a truck?” Merritt asked, clambering out of the basket. The rest of you followed his lead. Asian people in white aprons started yelling at you, shoving you through a crowded, steamy kitchen.
“Wait,” Danny said in between being shoved by Chinese chefs, “did you mis-run the tube?”
“No, I put it in the truck, I know I did!” Jack exclaimed, bumping into you while trying to dodge an oncoming tray.
“We’re really not in the truck right now,” you said, stumbling into Danny who reached back and grabbed your hand, the sensation becoming familiar to you.
“Somebody must have moved the tube,” Merritt said, as you all moved through a set of doors into what looked like a restaurant, “Were we above a Chinese restaurant?”
“I’m moving, relax!” Lula yelled at the man who was shoving her out of the kitchen.
“Okay, why are we here?” you demanded.
“Why am I frickin’ starving?” Lula asked, staring at the Chinese food everywhere.
“Yeah, I’m weirdly starving too,” Jack mused.
At their words your own stomach growled, responding to the smell of noodles and stir fry surrounding you.
Merritt moved towards the door, popping his head outside.
“Something’s very wrong,” you told Danny softly.
He nodded, brows furrowed, “Yeah, I agree.”
“At least,” Lula began as Merritt returned, “And I know this isn’t much consolation, but apparently we’re now surrounded by Chinese food. Right?”
“Guys…” Merritt said and you all turned to look at him, “I think where we are right now, they don’t refer to it as ‘Chinese food’. It’s just called… food.”
  “Shit,” you muttered.
“Wait, what are you saying?” Danny asked, “How is this possible?”
A high pitched giggle directed all of your attention to the man with a perm sitting at the table nearest you, facing away with a menu held up in front of his face.
“I believe in your particular parlance, the word is ‘magic’.”

The Different Stage (Jack Wilder x Reader)
warnings: fluff, mentions of stripping, suggestive situations.
A/N: i was rewatching the now you see me movies and I am absolutely obsessed with Jack Wilder so I thought I’d write a fic abt it. So in this reader is a stripper, she’s not a prostitute but she pole dances at a strip club and Jack goes in with Atlas and Merritt. Jack likes her and wants to actually get to know her. that’s basically it! Hope y’all enjoy!
Word count: 1307
Chapter 1:
It was just another night at the club. You had to work, in fact your hours had just about doubled since your rent went up. Though that’s just how it is in New York isn’t it. Thankfully you had done your last dance for the night and were packing up to go back to your crappy apartment. You pulled your hair up into a messy bun held together by a big clip. You walked back through the drinking area, the dancer scheduled after you had already taken the stage. You looked at her, smiling at her and waving, she smiled back. All the dancers were close, you all had to be to make sure no one got in trouble with a creepy customer. You turned to resume your journey home when you knocked into someone. A smooth male voice hit your ears and you found yourself face to face with these beautiful brown eyes. “Miss?” He spoke and you realized he had definitely said something else. The other two men that were with him eyed you before shrugging and walking to a table. “Oh uh, sorry. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking.” You said before moving to the side to push past him. He let you leave but watched you very closely as you did leave. Then he found his friends. Jack sat down with Atlas and Merritt, still looking back at the door you had left from. Atlas nudged Merritt with a devilish grin. “Look Jack’s got a crush!” Jack smacked Atlas’s arm, his eyes not leaving the doorway for a few more minutes. “Shut up.” Merritt and Atlas laughed before their night went on.
The next day you found yourself thinking of the man you ran into. You had never seen him around the bar before but he looked so familiar. You tried to push the beautiful stranger from your mind as you got ready for your night. You chose a fan favorite dance tonight, with the fan favorite outfit too. You didn’t enjoy your job but you were damn good at it. You walked out onto the stage after their announcement of your stage name and the music began. It was your most popular song for stage dance, So High by Doja Cat. You slowly strutted to the pole, throwing one leg around and letting yourself swing around. Your arms stabilized you on the pole and your head made a slow circle. It was the first time you actually looked at the audience and when you caught a pair of chocolate brown eyes you nearly stopped your routine. It was the man from the night before. He had come with the other two men again though one was being escorted off for a private lap dance. You let your eyes linger on him as his eyes burned your skin with intensity. You slowly dragged yourself back up the pole before moving to the side of the stage. Fingers twisting together you dropped to your knees at the beat, crawling forward before touching up your torso as the chorus began. Soon you lost yourself in the music, temporarily forgetting about the candy-eyed man. After your performance you had groundwork to do, that of course entailed a costume change and small makeup touch up. Once you changed your outfit and pulled your hair to one side you walked out. You were headed to one of the tables in your area when you were stopped. A man had walked in front of you, causing you to look up. Once more you found yourself in an intense staring match with the handsome stranger. “Uh.. hi.” He said, obviously a bit flustered, You smirked and touched his shoulder, walking next to him. “Hello loverboy.” You replied, beginning to walk away, your finger signaling for him to follow behind you. Upon hearing his footsteps behind you, your smirk grew. You got to the bar and picked up a tray for one of the tables. The stranger finally caught up and leaned on the bar. “So what’s your name… y’know your real name?” He asked. You laughed, “I don’t give my name to customers, sorry sweetcheeks.” “Then who do you give your name to?” “Hm, let me think on that.” You winked at him before moving to the table you were to serve. You set down the drinks, chatting up the gentlemen at the table for a few moments. A few tips were made through that before you walked back to the bar, handsome stranger was waiting for you. “I’m Jack, by the way.” He said. “Alright Jack, you going to buy something or just keep talking to me?” You glanced at him, smirking again. “Hm, how much would a date cost?” His lips cracked into a smirk to rival yours. A sultry giggle escaped your lips before you shook your head. “Dunno, how much you willing to pay? And what do you want me to do for that date?” Out of the corner of your eye you saw him shake his head. You leaned against the bar now, looking at him and holding tense eye contact. His cheeks had gone a bit pink as you spoke but he composed himself as he replied. “No no, not that kind of date.” “Hm, how about I think about that? Maybe I’ll let you know at the end of my shift.” You shrugged, grabbing another drink tray before moving to deliver them. As you began to walk to the table one of Jack’s friends came over, obviously drunk as hell. “Heyy Jack! You found her! Great job!! Hey, how about I pay for a private lap dance huh?” He spoke, smirking at Jack and still blocking your path. Jack began to protest the idea of a lap dance, giving you an apologetic smile. You giggled a bit, his smile was kinda cute. But his friend had already pulled out the money and stuck it in your top string. You sighed, handing your drink tray to one of the other girls to deliver. Jack looked down at you when your hand pressed to his chest. “Well, come on loverboy, a lap dance was ordered.” You wrapped your fingers around his tie and pulled him off. “You don’t have to give me a lap dance, I’m so sorry about my friend.” He spoke in pure panic until you got to the booths for private lap dances. You turned and wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him close. Hesitant hands found your hips and you smiled. You leaned in, your lips almost brushing against his before turning him around and pushing him into the chair. You climbed onto his lap, your thighs trapping him beneath you. You leaned down to his ear and whispered, “If you want me to stop, just say that.” As your words left your lips you began the dance. Your hips grinded gently in a circle, your hands dragging up his chest. Jack opened then closed his mouth, his hands not knowing where to touch. You leaned forward, pulling yourself up. Your chest was at his eye level yet his eyes stuck onto yours. You brought your hands around his head, playing with his hair. You dragged his head back, leaning into his neck to whisper. “I’m Y/N. And a date sounds nice, if you still want that.” Jack’s hands finally found your waist and he sat you down on his lap, looking at you with a different kind of intensity. “When do you get off?” “11.” “Let me get you food after work.” “You have a deal Jack.” You stood back up and pushed your hand onto his shoulder. Slowly you climbed off his lap and opened the curtain. “See you at 11 Jack.” You winked and walked off before he could get another sentence in.

Love is Like a Playing Card (J. Daniel Atlas) Chapter XXI
Tumblr media
After Lula left, Sutton looked over at Danny, still engrossed in his thoughts as he sat on the chair. She walked towards him, crouching down in front of him. Sutton placed a hand over his phone. Danny looked up at her, his eyes showing his confusion. His lips parted to speak, but he was unable to.
“Just… let me do this, okay?” Sutton told him. Danny nodded, unsure of what she was about to do. Sutton sucked in a breath. She moved to her knees, making herself taller and eye level with Danny. Slowly, she scooted herself closer to him, her hands on his knees for support, afraid that she may pass out from her rapid heartbeats. Sutton sucked in another breath, moving her hands to Danny’s cheeks. She looked into Danny’s eyes, searching for an answer of some kind, whether she should or shouldn’t do this. With all the confidence she had, Sutton kissed Danny, their lips quickly finding their missed places, like two puzzle pieces.
Danny sat in shock for a moment. Once he finally realized what was happening, he pushed himself off the chair, sitting on his knees in front of Sutton. Danny’s arms wrapped around Sutton’s waist, drawing her as close to him as possible, missing the feeling of his body next to hers. Sutton’s body molded into his, her arms snaking around his neck.
After what felt like only meer seconds, Sutton pulled away from Danny. He stared at her, confusion, shock, and utter disappointment from the loss of her lips evident on his face. Sutton shimmied herself out of Danny’s arms, standing up. “Goodnight, Danny,” she smiled.
Sutton turned, heading toward one of the two bedrooms left, leaving Danny to his own thoughts. She put three fingers to her lips, smiling at the moment the two shared. Happiness tingled throughout her body from Danny’s touch.
Danny ran a hand over his face. He found himself laughing at the event that had just occurred. He shook his head, feeling his heart beating fast. Sutton just showed Danny how much she missed him, and how much she still wanted to be with him. She poured her heart and soul into one kiss, and it was everything Danny needed at that moment. It was everything he needed to become the man Sutton knew he truly was.
~~
The next morning, Sutton awoke to the sounds of others talking outside her room. She rubbed her eyes, groggily standing and walking out of the room.
“Shit!” she shouted as she bumped into someone.
“Good morning to you, too,” Danny smiled as he held Sutton’s elbow to support her.
Sutton smiled. “Seems like yesterday I was tripping over you to get to the bathroom.”
Danny chuckled. “Yeah. I wouldn’t trade those bruises for anything in the world.”
The two stood there for a moment, grins plastered on their faces. Danny brushed a few strands of hair out of Sutton’s face. “I always loved your bedhead.”
Sutton involuntarily leaned into Danny’s touch, his thumb absentmindedly grazing her cheek. “I always loved your morning voice.”
“Alright, who wants pancakes?” Merritt announced.
Danny and Sutton turned to see a large stack of pancakes on the counter, Jack and Lula already scarfing down their helpings. The two smiled at each other, walking over to join the group.
“Since when did I lose my cooking job to you, Merritt?” Sutton asked as Merritt poured her a glass of orange juice.
“Since I realized Jack and I couldn’t survive on your meals alone anymore,” Merritt answered. “And, well, those late night calls to you helped, too,” he winked.
Sutton giggled as Danny said, “Ah, yes, the “Merritt emergencies.” How could I have forgotten?”
“Hey, some of us weren’t blessed enough to move in with Sutton,” Jack retorted with a mouth full of pancake. Lula hit him, telling him to not talk with food in his mouth.
“Yeah, she’s pretty amazing,” Danny murmured, just loud enough for Sutton to hear. She smiled at Danny as he patted her bare leg in the shorts Walter “generously” supplied.
As the five of them ate, Danny looked over at Sutton. She pushed the last few bits of pancake around her plate, obviously becoming full. She elbowed Jack, telling him to finish it off, which he happily did. Sutton sipped her orange juice, scrolling through her phone. Danny smiled to himself, realizing that now was the perfect time to tell the others what had been happening and to show her he is trying to get better.
“So,” Danny said, pushing his plate away from him, “there’s something I need to tell you guys.” Sutton locked her phone as the others looked at him. Jack was still engrossed in his food, so Sutton slapped his hand to listen to Danny. Danny glanced at Sutton who looked at him in confusion. “I have been in contact with someone. Someone I believe to be The Eye.”
Merritt and Lula shouted as Jack murmured, “I already knew that,” and shoved another bite in his mouth. “I arranged for them to pick up the stick from us once we have it.”
“How could you not tell us that?” Lula questioned Danny.
Danny sighed. “I’ve been in contact with them for a while now. I’m not proud of it, okay? I thought I was doing what was right for the team. You know, taking charge, getting us out of hiding.”
“Controlling the situation,” Merritt scoffed, “as usual.”
“Guys, just listen to him,” Sutton pleaded, “please.” Jack and Merritt glanced at one another, nodding in silent agreement as they always did at Sutton’s request.
“I agreed to meet with them a few weeks ago, back in New York. I only did it because we,” he looked at Jack and Merritt, “agreed that we were only letting Dylan lead us on for another month, then we were done. We were taking matters into our own hands, remember?” Jack and Merritt sighed, recalling the conversation the three had without Sutton, but her being their soul focus. “I-I was afraid Sutton was going to leave me, leave us, next, if I didn’t do something.” He glanced at Sutton, her smile showing him how proud she was to hear him tell the truth. “So, when I got a message from The Eye, I took the chance. I wanted to help us. I did it for the team, I promise.”
The Horsemen sat in silence for a moment. “So, why didn’t you tell us, you know, when you got the first message?” Jack asked.
Danny sighed heavily. “I don’t know, honestly. All I could think to do was talk to these people, save us, save our sanity.”
“While I hate that you did this on your own, I do respect it,” Merritt told him, receiving surprised looks from everyone. “Sometimes, Atlas isn’t always the asshole we all know he is. Sometimes, he’s a little more like Sutton.” Merritt smiled at his young partner as she mouthed, “thank you.” Merritt nodded.
“So, these are definitely the same people you plan on giving the stick to, right?” Lula asked.
Danny nodded. “Definitely. They’re going to help us stay out of jail.”
“Thank God because this pretty face wouldn’t last a day in the slammer!” Lula exclaimed, pointing at Jack.
The others laughed. Sutton grabbed Danny’s hand, pulling herself toward him. “I’m proud of you,” she whispered, their fingers entwining like they once did.
Danny smiled, staring down at their hands. “That kiss last night,” he whispered, making Sutton bite her lip to hold back a smile, “it made me realize that I needed to tell them. I need to learn to trust them with everything that’s going on. I’m not in this alone.”
Sutton smiled. “You never were,” she reminded him, kissing his cheek.

They try to braid your hair (Danny and Jack mini-imagines?)
Danny:
It was a rather dead day for the four horseman, they finally got a break after their big show that lead to their “disappearance”. You and Danny were sitting in the living room watching reruns of your favorite tv shows. You were seated on the floor with your back leaned up against the couch. Danny was sitting on the couch directly above you. He was playing with your hair. Something he always did. It helped calm him down. You could tell he was trying to braid it because his fingers kept getting wrapped up in strands of your hair. “Dang it.” You heard him say under his breath. “I wish I had a magic trick for this. I don’t know how you do it everyday Y/N.” You laughed a little and turned so you were facing him. “Years of practice my dear.” You said taping his nose lightly with your finger. He just scrunched his nose and smirked at you. He was adorable that way. You leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. “Let’s go get some food yeah?” You asked him. “Sure, why not.” Danny replied and the two of you grabbed your coats and walked to the nearest Chinese takeout place.
Jack:
You guys were on the jet headed to the next destination. You sat on the ground messing around with jacks cards trying to figure out his tricks. You just didn’t know how he did it. “You know that might be easier if your hair wasn’t in your eyes.” Merritt laughed. “Oh you try doing it grandpa.” You snapped back. “Oooh.” You heard your boyfriend jack say as he waltzed back into the area you were currently sitting in and sat in the chair behind you. “But seriously babe, I think Merritts right. Do you want me to pull back your hair for you and then I’ll show you some tricks?” You smiled at him but rolled your eyes. “Sure. Why not.” You handed him a hair tie. Jack separated your hair into three parts trying to do a braid. You could hear him mutter under his breath. “This one over top of that one and that one goes there..done!” He said tieing it off. You felt small pieces of your hair fall out of the braid. “It’s harder than it looks.” You reassured him. “Thanks for trying though.” You smiled at him and kissed him on the nose. “Now... for those tricks...” you said blowing a strand of hair out of your face. He just laughed and kissed you on the cheek. “Of course.” He said getting out of his chair and sitting directly across from you on the floor. The two of you spent the rest of the time practicing card tricks and laughing at each other.
A/N: sorry this is so bad. I’m a little rusty and this is the first time I’m writing for NYSM. Requests are open if you’d like. So yeah.

Conversation
Danny: I have a plan, alright? And it involves you giving this letter to Lionel Shrike. Now, I have given this to Thaddeus Bradley, The Eye, his mother- I've even put a copy on his grave, and he has not gotten back to me, which means he hasn't gotten it yet.
Dylan: Okay. What is in this letter?
Danny: That's... none of your business, alright? Just give it to Shrike.
Dylan: Did you write a love letter to my father?
Danny: In a lot of ways, yes, I do love him but that is not a love letter in the way that you're thinking of it, okay? There's nothing sexual or...
Dylan: Okay, that sounds good. I'm gonna read it.
Dylan: "Dear Lionel-" oh shit, there are stickers. Oh, my god. "Dear Lionel, I feel like I can call you Linol because you and me are so much alike." Really? "I would love to meet you someday, it would be great to perform. I love your hair, you magic good. Did you have a good relationship with your father? Me neither. These are all things we can talk about, and more. I hope you write back this time, and we get to be good friends. I am sure our relationship would be real magical."

Jack Wilder - Now You See Me
Tumblr media
A/N: Honestly I used to hate this but after some heavy editing it kinda grew on me and I kinda really like it now... Who knows, maybe you will too! ^-^
- - -
A series of knocks immediately brought me to my feet.
“Coming!”
I swung the door to my side to reveal a young man, hunched, clutching his side. He looked up at me through a lock of hair that had fallen over his eyes. He winced and clutched his side. My eyes flickered down to find blood seeping through his fingers.
My eyes widened. “Jack, holy shi-”
“Yeah, I know, it’s bad…,” he said in a strained voice, cutting me off. He gestured to the inside of my house. “Can we just…?”
I shook my head at him, my eyes narrowed. “I hate you. So, so freaking much,” I mutter in a dangerous tone, just enough for him to hear. Despite my frustrations, I stepped outside, taking his wrist and slinging his arm over my shoulder. I gripped his waist and helped him limp into the house.
“Laying down,” I ordered, lifting his arm from my shoulders. He proceeded to get down on the couch before I stopped him, shaking my head and wagging a finger at him. “Ah, ah. Shirt’s gotta come off first.”
He let out a hollow chuckle, making himself wince. “You could’ve asked before I’d lost two pints of blood.”
I rolled my eyes. “No laughing, Wilder. It speeds up the heart rate, makes you lose more blood,” I said blandly as I opened my first aid kit from the drawer.
“Sorry to break it to you, princess, but that’s not the only reason my heart rate’s going up,” he said cheekily.
I shook my head. “You really have lost a lot of blood.”
He didn’t say anything. I turned around to find him sprawled out on the couch with exhaustion, still clutching his side, his head to the side and his eyes closed, trying his best to control his breathing. As bitter as I was at him, I still felt equally sympathetic; he really was in pain.
I took my materials and sat down with them in front of him on the hard wood floor. I took his wrist and checked his pulse while subconsciously running my fingers through the front of his hair. I concentrated on his pulse as I studied his face. I finished counting his pulse. An abnormally quick heart rate… hmm…
He groaned and turned his head, opening his eyes with a struggle as if I were shining a blinding light in them. His gaze met mine and a strained, playful smile graced his lips.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” He asked.
My eyebrows furrowed. “Like what?”
“Like that.”
I shook my head once again. Must be the blood loss talking.
My eyes traveled to his side where his hand still lay clenched. I gingerly placed my own hand on his, glancing at him. “Can I see?”
As a response he lifted his hand, which I could see was shaking as it traveled through he air. A pang of sympathy thudded against my heart.
I studied the wound for a second before fishing around for the supplies to treat it.
“Third degree trauma wound. Cut from a knife?” I asked, pulling out a numbing injection.
“Yeah, I got- woah, hold on a minute, doc,” he said, his eyes wide as he peered at the needle. “Can we talk about thi-“
“Look, you don’t want me dressing a wound like that without numbing it,” I explained, pulling out a gauze and smearing alcohol on the skin right next to the huge gash.
“Yeah, okay, just make it quick,” he said, turning his head again and squeezing his eyes shut.
As fast as the needle entered his skin, it left just as quickly. I glanced at Jack, who still had his eyes squinted together as tight as he could.
“I’m done now, genius,” I told him, cracking a small smile. My bitterness was quickly fading away; it was hard to stay mad at him for long.
He cracked an eye open, then quickly both of them when he realized the needle was well away from him. “Oh- right, uh, yeah, I know, ” he replied. “Just testing you.”
“Right,” I nodded, raising my eyebrows in a sarcastic way.
I wasted no time in proceeding to clean the wound. I was about halfway done with the stitching when he broke the silence.
“I’m sorry,” he said simply.
I took a brief pause to send him a questioning look.
I went back to work, still talking. “For?”
“Working you like this. Showing up at your house at midnight to get stitches. It’s not fair to you.”
I shrugged. “Just part of the job, I guess.” A brief silence passed before I let out a short laugh. “But I do have to admit, as much as you get yourself hurt you’d think you’d know how to stitch yourself up by now.”
“Well, maybe you should teach me?”
I shrugged again. “It’s not too hard. Kinda like knitting I guess. Here, watch.” I leaned in close to show him. I tied off the end of the stitches in slow motion so he could see what was happening. As I finished, I glanced up at him to find his attention intently trained on me. I didn’t fail to notice that his face was particularly close to mine. I let out a slightly nervous laugh.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
He grinned. “Funny, I asked you the same question just five minutes ago.”
“Okay, yeah, but why?”
Then he grinned even wider. And, as if to answer my question, he propped himself on his elbows and tilted his head forward, just enough to close the gap between us.
I couldn’t comprehend it at first, but as quickly as I tensed up, I relaxed. In one hand I accidentally dropped my tweezers on his chest, abandoning them for a hand in his hair. However, it seemed as if as soon as we kissed, we broke apart. I opened my eyes to find that same silly grin spread across his face.
I guess that’s why.

One More Night - Chapter III
Tumblr media
Pairing: Daniel Atlas x reader Summary: They are like the sun and the moon. Chasing each other, but never quite finding each other to finally become one. Daniel and the reader are solo artists with loads of charme and character. What happens when two stubborn minds meet and are forced to work together? Words: ca. 1200 Warning:
One More Night - Prologue / Part I / Part II
Months had passed since Danny and your shared night, and you had decided to never mention it again. You had put the memories to the back of your mind, no matter how hard it was. You both agreed it’d be better to forget it, but silently, both of you were hurting with this decision.
But you’d never admit that. It was easier to tease him and put him into place whenever he forgot who he was talking to again.
You first show in Las Vegas had gone absolutely amazing and couldn’t have gone any better. Art had his private jet ready for y’all as soon as the police released you. You had never been on a plane like this. One, with no more than fifteen seats, beautiful, leather-clad walls and a washroom with a shower and enough space to spread your arms. It was amazing, but you knew it wouldn’t last nearly as long as you wanted it to. The flight from Las Vegas to New Orleans was no more than four hours, but you’d enjoy the feeling of this private jet till the last minute.
Unfortunately, or maybe happily, you ended up in the seat right across from Danny whilst Merritt sat with Jack - Art and the rest of the crew had seated themselves in the front of the plane. You had tried to unobtrusively change your seat with Jack, but he’d only shaken his head and flipped one of his cards onto the seat to mark it as his.
“Uh-uh, I’m not sitting with Mr. Know-It-All for four hours.”
You slumped into your seat. Danny raised his eyebrows at you as he tried to hide a smirk, but you still saw it. You rolled your eyes at him and grabbed the card set from your back pocket, rehearsing some of the standard tricks.
You loved the simplicity of card tricks. They were easy to learn, but hard to figure out. Most of them simply needed nimble fingers and patience.
Jack was still teaching you some easy things, like how to hide the card at the back of your hand, so you decided to exercise this a few more times. Unfortunately, you had tiny hands and hiding the card in your palm only worked in two out of three times.
Danny successfully distracted you as he played with his own cards, flipping them from one hand to the other whilst studying you. Not one card flew away as he mindlessly shuffled them around. Your patience was as thin as a rake after your first performance and the police investigation, so after just a few minutes, you huffed and put the cards down again. Atlas stared straight into your annoyed face, so you crossed your arms and leaned back, closing your eyes and praying for at least a few minutes of peace.
“No, no, no, don’t do that. You’re not doing that thing to me. No.”
You stirred awake at Atlas’ frantic voice. He stood right next to your seat, holding his hands in the air. Merritt stood in front of him and wore a cocky grin, taking a few steps closer to him, causing Danny to move back. What were they doing?
“What thing? I’m just looking at you.”
Merritt wore a mask of innocence. Even wihtout knowing what made him look like it - you had to laugh at it. Merritt and innocence? Those two things didn’t fit together.
“No, you’re not. I’ve been watching you for a year. I know all of your little tricks.”
Atlas’ and his arrogance again. They were talking about McKinney’s mentalism again. Danny always thought he was smarter than Merritt, even if he knew deep down he’d never stand a chance against him. There were situations Danny should better shut up - situations like this - but his ego was always stronger than his brain. He’d never be able to crack people like Merritt could. It just wasn’t his thing.
“That’s what they are to you? Tricks?”
“Yes, it’s gimmicks. it’s Barnum statements. It’s reading the eyes. Body language. I get it.”
“If it’s such an easy thing, why don’t you do (Y/N)?”
Danny’s eyes widened at the proposition and his gaze snapped to yours. If Danny knew so well what to look for when reading a person, how come he still had no idea what you really felt for him? How he was the one to make you go insane, good and bad. How he was the one you dreamt off every night or how your sassy comebacks were your poor attempts at flirting? The night you’d spent together may have meant nothing more to him than to relief some tension, but to you, it was more, which he would know if he had Merritt’s abilities. You weren’t sure if McKinney knew what had happened between Danny and you, but you were sure he saw right through you and your cold behaviour.
“Yeah, Atlas. Why don’t you do me?”
You were well aware of the double meaning behind your words. He knew it, too. You raised one eyebrow and waited for one of his amazing comebacks, but he was beaten to it by Art.
“No. Do me.”
You were a little disappointed how everyone enjoyed Art’s idea. You were hoping to mess with Danny and his arrogance again, maybe even get something out of him, but maybe it was safer for the both of you if he tried his mentalism with Art. The smirk on his face told you he believed as little in Danny as the rest of you did.
“So, Art, you were a tough kid. You know, kind of a real rapscallion. You had a dog. A real tough dog. A brutish breed. Like a real…I want to say, Ben the bulldog.”
The thing is, Art wanted to be seen as exactly that. As a tough kid who grew up to be a tough men, but the truth was completely different. He was a wimp, a sacredly cat who was coincidently able to build a successful company. A company he could hide behind if he ever came to face difficulties.
“Actually, I was a prissy little tot. I had a fluffy white cat called Snuffles.”
You started laughing at the baffled expression on Danny’s face. He squinted his eyes at all of you, but he caught your gaze. He knew what you were thinking. He knew you were mocking him - he didn’t need the ability to read people for that.
“What, you think you can do it better?”
A laugh bubbled up your throat as you shook your head.
“Better than what you just did? Yeah, probably. But I’d never be stupid enough to challenge Merritt, so that makes me better than you in two things already.”
The sarcastic smile he sent you in reply only caused you to laugh again and run your small hand through his messy hair. He looked like an offended hamster as he swatted your hand away. A light blush appeared on his cheeks and you winked at him, sitting down in your seat again and closing your eyes with a content smile on your lips.
Messing with Danny? Done.
You missed Merritt’s slightly confused look and how his eyes hastily moved between Danny and you, so as he let out a loud laugh and clapped his hands together, all of you jumped in surprise. His eyes lit up as he caught your glance.
“Son of a bitch! You guys slept together?!”

God damn it I thought NYSM2 ruined Daniel for me since i think my crush kinda dissapeared after that but...the version i have of him in my head is very much still attractive, not because of any physical differences necessarily, but because I imagine him as much more cocky and annoying and bastardly than he probably actually was in the movies. Exaggerating makes it a thing about him, rather than it just coming off like he's a misogynist

Found Family (5/?)
I cannot tell you all how much your support of my writing means to me. I’m so sorry this took so long. If I’m being honest, the next part might take even longer (just because I’m busy with college exams and uni applications… the stress levels are REAL high right now) but I want you to know I love reading your comments and I smile every time someone reacts to my posts. Anyway, here we go!
Fandom: Now You See Me
Pairing: Daniel Atlas x Reader
Warnings: some swearing, read at your own discretion.
Tumblr media
“Can’t we all — just once — stay in the same place for more than a few weeks at a time?” you sighed, climbing in the back of the car with Merritt and Danny.
“I agree that that would be nice, but currently we have no control over where we go and when. Literally, considering we entered the tube in New York and were spat out in Macau,” Danny said, letting you rest your head on his shoulder tiredly.
“It’s all about blind spots,” Merritt’s brother said once the car began moving through the streets of Macau, “When you’re staring straight at something and not see it. Why? Blind spots! We learnt that together, didn’t we, bro?”
Merritt grunted, staring blankly at the floor. You nudged his foot with yours gently, trying to comfort him. He flashed a small, grateful smile.
“Did he tell you that we were partners, once?” Chase continued, “No? I didn’t think so. The ‘Mini-McKinneys’.”
  “Cool,” Lula said flatly.
“And then one day, we were 12, and Virginia von Welsheim had a very nice party down the street. I had a little tum-tum, couldn’t go. Mer-Bear did it on his own and got a taste of the solo thing, and uh… and kicked me to the curb.”
“Oh god,” Danny muttered. You nudged him in the side for insensitivity.
Merritt sighed, “Chase, you win! I concede. Just tell me how you did it.”
Chase grinned, “Delivery came to your door about a month ago… a little za?”
  “Za?” Danny asked.
“Pizza,” Merritt told him, then addressing his brother, “Huh?”
“Yeah, so what he did, my little womb-mate, is he downloaded all of your private information and my employer had all he needed.”
You could feel Danny glaring at Merritt for accusing him of being the leak. You rolled your eyes at his ability to hold a grudge.
“Thanks,” Danny said to Merritt sarcastically, then turning to Chase, “How did you know how to find him?”
“That’s a very good question, Atlas,” Chase said, miming locking his mouth closed and throwing away the key.
“Okay,” Danny said, frustration bleeding from his tone.
“Danny, I swear to god, don’t make Merritt feel worse about this than he already does,” you whispered so only he could hear.
  “He’s a hypocrite, Y/n,” Danny hissed.
You just took your head off his shoulder and shifted away from him, too angry to care about how tired you were in that moment. Why couldn’t he just let it go?
The car pulled in to what looked like a casino and stopped at the front door. The Horsemen got out, flanked by more armed guards.
“Just follow the guards, they’ll take you to my boss,” Chase said with a grin, “Been fun playing this cat-and-mouse with you, broski. Meow.”
Merritt rubbed his eyes with his middle fingers. You found a grim sort of satisfaction in that.
“Have fun at the Sands,” Chase called as the car pulled away again and you were escorted into the casino.
“I am so, so, so sorry,” Merritt said to Danny. You watched wearily from behind them, hoping Danny swallowed his pride for once.
“Yeah, you should be.” Of course not. “Don’t ever accuse me of betraying us again, okay?”
You scoffed, quickening your steps to walk past him and get him out of your eyesight. Unfortunately, the guards led you to an elevator where you were forced to stand in the back and watch as Danny walked in and caught your eye, cocking his head at your glare, and resting his hand against the wall. Your heart thumped loudly at the sight, adding to your frustration. God dammit, he was not allowed to look that good when you were angry with him!
“Do you guys ever think that the Eye is watching this?” Lula asked next to you, breaking the sullen silence, “You know, that maybe this is even what they want? And at the exact right moment they’re going to swoop in, and we’ll be like, ‘Yes! Thank God you’re here! Thank God! Just in the nick of time, Eye!’ And then we’ll just celebrate, and it was all worth it in the end?”
Silence. You swallowed, still gazing at Danny.
“I don’t even really think that either, so… It’s cool.”
The elevator door pinged, and opened up behind you. Some sort of rock music blared as the five of you turned around. A man stood in front of huge, floor-length windows looking out on Macau. His leg jerked in time with the music as he flicked a playing card back and forth between his hands.
You were shoved out of the elevator by the guards as the man turned around and exclaimed, “Ah! Ta-da! So happy to be working with you! Please, come in, come in!”
The guards shoved you further, and you winced as one of them elbowed you in the ribs, a soft huff leaving your mouth.
“Hey! Hands off her, buddy,” Danny said, stepping between you and the guard. You swallowed down the warmth blooming in your chest at his words, desperately trying to cling to the anger you had held for him just moments earlier. It was a pointless exercise, but damn you if you didn’t try.
“Wait, sorry, how are you working with us?” he asked, still standing in front of you which forced you to peer at the stranger over his shoulder.
“Oh, well, as much as a magician who pulls a rabbit from a hat is working with that rabbit,” the man explained, pulling on a pair of very expensive looking slippers and walking over his koi-pond floor, “We'll be working together. Yes. Allow me to introduce myself.”
“Yeah, you’re Walter Mabry,” you stated, stepping out from behind Danny.
“You died a year ago,” Jack clarified.
“Yes!” Mabry exclaimed, “An idea I got from you, Mr Wilder! Fake your death and the world puts its guard down.”
You glanced at Lula who stood to your left — she seemed just as overwhelmed as you felt.
“I’m able to control quite a few companies, including my old partner Owen’s, as a consortium of so-called anonymous shareholders,” Mabry continued.
“And that violates how many SEC laws?” Lula asked.
“I believe it breaks all of them,” Mabry answered casually.
“All of them,” Lula repeated dryly.
How could everything have gone so wrong, you thought, dread curling in your gut. This man was obviously unstable, and had no qualms with breaking laws and risking going to jail. Who knew what he was really capable of when pushed?
“You see, you all want an audience. Need one, desperately. It’s quite sad really,” he directed this at Danny who’s jaw twitched in irritation. You gripped his wrist gently, silently begging him to keep his cool, “I, on the other hand, want the opposite of that. I just want to be, and I am, one hundred percent off the grid. You know why?”
“Yeah, because the grid is for actual human beings,” Danny quipped, making you grip his wrist tighter. He sent an apologetic glance your way, twisting his hand to grab yours.
Mabry was infuriated for a total of zero point five seconds before giving Danny a chillingly calm smile, “No, because in a world of total surveillance, the only true freedom lies in not being seen. You can’t control the grid from within the grid. Follow me.”
He began walking off. When you didn’t follow him he repeated, “Follow me!”
  “Okay, alright.”
The guards pushed you forward and the five of you followed Mabry as he spoke.
“You pulled a hat out of a rabbit,” he said, turning to Lula, “That was very colourful.”
She sighed, “Almost eight and a half years ago, so, no need to bring that up.”
You yourself winced at the memory. Mabry was wrong, there had been an abundance of one colour in particular — red.
Mabry grinned and instead turned to Danny, “We can’t all be held accountable for our adolescent personas, can we, Magicolio?”
Your eyes widened and you whirled on Danny who’s jaw ticked in irritation, “Magicolio… that was fifteen years ago.”
Oh, you were definitely going to use this. It was gold.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Mabry continued, very obviously enjoying his main character moment, “Like you, and many others I suppose, who were not getting any sex in high school, I dabbled with it.” Merritt pointed at Danny who shook his head. “But, uh, unlike you, I was able to transition upward towards actual magic.”
He gestured to the side where there stood what looked like a giant, shiny server, “Science, you may have heard it called. So would you like to know, my friends, just how I got you here?”
“We know how you did it,” you stated, having figured that out on the ride here.
“No you don’t,” Mabry said sharply.
“Yeah, you stole our files from the show,” Merritt drawled, “then obviously hypnotised us.”
  “No, seriously, stop.”
“The strobe was a combo of binaural beats, as well as…”
“I said stop!” Mabry yelled, grabbing the sides of Merritt’s neck. The mentalist looked down at the shorter man, a little disturbed. Danny gripped your hand tighter, “You might not be having fun, but I am.”
“You have an unusual way of showing it,” Merritt mused.
Mabry ignored his comment and stepped back, clapping his hands together and grinning excitedly,” So... How did I do it? Easy. You see, magicians like to control other people's perceptions. In your heightened state of agitation, you saw the simplest cues — Black tube, roof — and your minds filled in the rest.”
“Shit,” you muttered, mentally kicking yourself for not keeping your head during the chaos.
“But the tube you meant to go down was 20 feet to your right,” Mabry finished smugly, “Go on, sit down. There's no one
standing in your way.”
“Don’t mind if I do,” Merritt quipped, settling onto the couch.
With slight caution, you followed his lead, Danny plopping down next to you. To your dismay, Mabry squeezed in between you and Lula.
“Anyway, once in the tube, yes you’re right. Blah blah blah, the strobe contained UV letters pulsing the word ‘sleep’, and this combined with the sound put you into an instant alpha pattern.”
The image of the flashing lights in the tube resurfaced in your mind’s eye and you tried not to wince at the reality of it. You had been tricked. All of you. Dylan too, probably. Not to mention you were now at the mercy of this clearly unhinged not-dead billionaire with a god complex.
“And from then on,” Mabry continued, “it really was just fun, and I can assure you, you don’t know what happened.”
With that he clicked the remote and a power point was displayed on the screen in front of you. The opening slide was black with the words ‘Our trip to Macau’ in white typing. The next slide cleared everything up.
“That’s really creepy,” You stated, cautiously eyeing the photograph of your unconscious self lying with your head in Danny’s lap as he leaned on Mabry who was giving the camera the finger.
  “Really, really creepy,” Lula agreed.
“That’s not cool,” you said, shaking your head.
“Yep, easy stuff, magic, if you put your mind to it,” Mabry said cheerfully. You wanted to claw his eyes out. This urge was heightened when the next photo showed draped over Mabry’s lap, your head resting on his shoulder.
  Danny tensed next to you.
“Alright, that’s enough,” he interjected, “So why are we here then? You know, besides you getting to show off how adorably clever you are?”
“Well to start with, the man you stole from last year. Turns out I had invested a lot of money in some of his companies so a lot of what you stole, was in fact mine.” Mabry said, his cheerful tone completely at odds with the accusation.
“It’s a small world,” you muttered, rolling your eyes. It figured this lunatic was after money. Or revenge. Either was enough to satisfy people like him.
“Good news is, it’s very easy for you to pay me back! I just need your… skills.”

Love is Like a Playing Card (J. Daniel Atlas) Chapter IV
Tumblr media
~~ Three Months Later ~~
Danny pulled up to his destination. He let out a frustrated grunt as he stood and marched up to the building in front of him. His fists slammed against the door.
“Who the hell pounds on a fu-” the voice cut itself short when the person opened the door. “Oh. Danny.”
“Dylan,” Danny stated through gritted teeth.
“Uh, come in?” Dylan said, unsure of what to do.
Danny stepped inside the cold apartment that Dylan used as his FBI coverup. It was dull, completely free of decorations. It was nothing like the home Sutton had made their apartment.
Dylan walked around Danny, flopping down on his couch. “To whom do I owe this pleasure to on my day off?” he asked, picking up his laptop and typing quickly. Dylan claimed he had recently been working on finding The Horsemen an opportunity to make their big return.
Danny took a minute to collect himself before answering. He thought about his conversation earlier with Jack and Merritt. The three were, for once, in agreement with each other- if Dylan didn’t find them something, anything, to do within the next month, they were taking matters into their own hands, even if it meant bringing Jack and Sutton “back from the dead.” Sutton, on the other hand, was still adjusting to life without Henley. Sometimes, Danny caught her looking at old photos and programs from their shows, or overheard their phone conversations. The sighs Sutton heaved after she hung up a call were starting to get to Danny, slowly eating away at his sanity.
“Look,” Danny finally said, “we are done waiting.”
Dylan sighed. He closed his laptop and sat it down on the coffee table in front of him. He steepled his fingers in front of his face, letting out a deep breath. “I know,” he said, turning his head to Danny.
Danny looked away from Dylan, ashamed of the vulnerability he was about to show. “I’m afraid if it takes any longer, Sutton is going to leave, too.”
Carefully looking at the illusionist, Dylan replied, “I can’t see Sutton ever leaving.” Danny gave him a look, one filled with hope. “She loves you too much. Hell, she loves Jack and Merritt too much. That’s her Achilles heel that will get her in trouble.”
“What do you mean?” Danny questioned him, his eyebrows furrowing.
Again, Dylan sighed, choosing his words carefully. “The more a magician, especially one in our position, cares, the more likely they are to mess up.”
Danny scoffed, disgusted by Dylan’s words. “The size of Sutton’s heart doesn’t affect her magic. She is still the same person she was when performing with Henley.”
“Is she?” Dylan questioned with a cock of his eyebrow.
Danny’s jaw clenched and unclenched, anger building within him at Dylan’s clear betrayal of Sutton’s talents. “Maybe it’s time that I put my trust in my team and do something you haven’t been able to do.” With that, Danny walked out the door as Dylan scoffed his disapproval.
When Danny reached his motorcycle, he took out his cell phone, prepared to call Sutton. Instead, a text message popped up on his screen from a secured number.
Prove yourself, the message read. The Eye is always watching.
~One Week Later~
“Yes, Merritt,” Sutton mumbled into her cell phone as she walked back into the living room. She handed Danny his bottle of water as he read yet another mystery crime novel. “We will be there. I promise.” Sutton sat beside Danny, her body instinctively curling up to his. “What do you want me to do? Pinky promise? I can’t do that over the phone.” Sutton threw a leg over Danny’s outstretched ones as her arm wrapped around his torso. Danny welcomed her body next to his as he wrapped an arm around her, his eyes never leaving his book.
In the last three months, this had become a normal occurrence for the couple, spending time with one another in comfortable silence. However, there were plenty of moments when Danny began to rant on and on about The Eye. He was getting tired of being cooped up all day. Sutton had talked him into reading crime novels to help get his mind off of the magical crimes he would rather be committing. Sometimes, this backfired and caused Danny to then rant about how he could pull off the crime “much more efficiently by using magic.” More often than not, Sutton was quite persuasive in getting him to drop the topic quickly.
Sutton huffed, bringing the phone down from her ear and holding it to her chest. “Merritt needs us to pinky promise.”
Danny rolled his eyes, sitting his book down. “You miss one take-out movie night for a roll in the sack and it all goes to hell.”
Sutton giggled. “No one says that anymore, babe.” She gave him a quick kiss and stuck out her pinky to Danny. He smiled, wrapping his pinky around hers.
Sutton quickly snapped a photo of their entwined fingers and sent it to Merritt. “Did you get it?” she asked the mentalist. “Good. Now, we will see you tonight at ten. What?” She rolled her eyes. “Tell Jack I am not baking cookies. When you’re the host, you make or buy the food. I don’t make the rules. Bye, boys!” Sutton huffed, ending the call.
Sutton snuggled closer to Danny’s side, her arm wrapping tight around his torso. Danny ran a hand through her hair as his other hand gripped her thigh, pulling her leg up more.
Danny placed a light kiss to the top of her head. “You already made the cookies, didn’t you?”
“Chocolate chip, yeah,” Sutton laughed, tilting her head up to see Danny smile. They kissed, their lips moving as one, a feeling that neither one had yet to get tired of.

Warnings: none really, just Lula’s fake severed hand.
Part 2 Part 4
Tumblr media
Your alarm woke you up at seven o’clock on the morning of the big day.
Stretching out your stiff muscles, you threw on a wooly blue jumper and made your way down the hall to the main room. Danny was already moving about the kitchen, clad in tracksuit pants and a unzipped hoodie over a T-shirt, making you both coffee. It had become a routine for the two of you to drink coffee together in the mornings. Conversation occasionally accompanied the tradition, but usually you just sat in comfortable silence and you both slowly woke up.
Today was different though. It was clear as soon as he handed you your Yoda mug full of that life-saving substance that he had a few things to discuss.
“Morning,” you greeted softly, knowing if you didn’t he would probably just launch right in to whatever topic he had in mind.
“Morning,” he said, sitting down opposite you at the kitchen table.
Taking a sip, you quirked a brow at him, “Alright Danny, spit it out.”
He nodded, stalling for a brief moment by sipping from his own mug, “Are you feeling okay? About today, I mean.”
You gave him a teasing smile, “Why? You worried about me, Atlas?”
He didn’t answer, opting instead to take another sip of his coffee. He is worried about me, you realised with no small amount of warmth.
“I’m okay, Danny. Really,” you said gently, “It’s not my first rodeo.”
“This uh… this isn’t like any other show though,” he mused, fishing his deck of cards out of the pocket of his hoodie and mindlessly shuffling the cards. You watched, mesmerised by the fluidity of his movements and the ease at which the cards flipped between his fingers.
“I know. After all this Lula and I will officially be fugitives of the law, just like you, Jack and Merritt. But we knew what we were signing up to, Danny. I’ve made my choice and I’m sticking with it.”
Swallowing he nodded, placing the cards down on the table. With a grin you grabbed them, performing your own shuffling ritual and spreading them out on the table skilfully.
“Pick a card, and look at it.”
He chuckled, leaning forward to pluck one from the spread. After a single glance, he placed it back in a different spot.
“Now shuffle it yourself,” you instructed, nodding towards the cards.
“You know it’s not a mystery to me, right?” He reminded you as he shuffled.
You winked, “I know, but it’s still fun. Who else can say the J Daniel Atlas was the volunteer for one of their magic tricks?”
With a jerk of his eyebrows and that small knowing smile of his, he placed the deck down on the table again, “Fair enough.”
Grabbing the deck, you chucked it into the air behind you, eyes trained on Danny as the cards fluttered to the floor.
“And the point of that was…” he trailed off, leaning back in his chair, the epitome of carefree.
Flicking your wrist, a playing card appeared in your hand for him to see, “Was this your card?”
“That’s actually pretty good,” he admitted, “I didn’t even see your slight of hand.”
“But you know how I did it,” you stated, not meaning it as a question at all.
  “Naturally.”
The two of you finished your coffee and got ready to meet the others at Dylan’s place. Knowing you wouldn’t have time to change properly before the show, you got into the outfit you were to perform in. It consisted of a black halter top tucked into a slater skirt with opaque tights and your leather jacket.
Applying a bit of mascara and eyeliner to finish it off, you walked out of your room to wait for Danny to finish up putting on his numerous disguises.
“Woah,” he muttered as he stepped into the main room and caught sight of you leaning against the kitchen table, “you clean up nice.”
Your eyes widened and a blush made its way onto your face. Through your spiralling thoughts and nerves about what you were going to take on today, you hadn’t thought about what Danny’s reaction would be to your being dressed up.
“Uh, thanks,” you mumbled, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear, “We should probably go.”
“Yeah, let me just grab my keys.”
  ———
Two hours later you, Merritt and Lula waited in the van parked strategically for a getaway.
“I have to go in 5 minutes, so any last advice,” you asked, trying to keep your breathing even.
“Have confidence in your own abilities,” Danny said, meeting your gaze from where he sat opposite you, “These past few weeks have proven that you’re skilled at magic and good at adapting to your situation.”
Your breathing relaxed as you gazed at him, a grateful smile blooming across your face, “Thanks, Danny. That means a lot.”
He shrugged, the corner of his mouth quirking up, “It’s the truth.”
“Oh my god, my sister’s gonna get with Atlas before I get with Jack,” Lula huffed, throwing her head against the headrest of the passenger seat.
“I’m sorry, but was that not obvious from the first time they interacted?” Merritt drawled.
Your face was red. You were sure you looked like a tomato.
“Can we all just focus, please?” Danny snapped, then with a quick glance at you, “You should probably get going.”
You nodded, “Yeah, okay. I’ll see you guys in there.”
“Break a leg,” Merritt called, not bothering to turn around.
“Yeah, good luck Y/nn!” Lula said, using the nickname that up until this moment you had hoped the other Horsemen would never hear.
Sighing, you climbed out the back of the van and gave Danny one last smile, “So long, Atlas.”
He just winked, “I’ll see you on stage.”
Then you were off, walking at a natural pace to the front of the building. Grabbing a colourful silk scarf and a large pair of sunglasses, you donned them, hoping they took enough attention away from your features so no one recognised you later on. The front doors were automatic and slid open as you neared them. Once inside you were instantly surrounded by the hum of chatter and the beep of metal detectors.
There was a line to check in with the security guards, and you joined the one to the far left.
“Keys, cell phones, iPads in the bin,” a familiar voice was saying as you neared the front of the queue, “Thank you sir.”
The line moved on and the woman in front of you placed her bag on the conveyor belt, “Can’t have you texting, tweeting, recording, or… eating.”
Jack held up a banana he’d grabbed from the woman’s bag with an apologetic smile, “Sorry, we will take very good care of it for you.”
She walked off and you stepped forward.
“Morning miss, can I see your employee badge?” Jack asked, the corner of his mouth tilting up in a knowing smirk. You tried not to smile back at him.
“I um… I was actually sent an email by Octa. I’m a vlogger…?” you said, holding up your phone with the forged email displayed on the screen.
“Oh, great, let me just see…” Jack said, making a show of inspecting the email, “Everything seems about right, just place your bag down and come right through.”
Then you were off again, palming the earpiece Jack hand slipped you once you were through the metal detector and placing it in your ear.
“Dylan, I’m in,” you whispered into your arm as you tugged off the scarf and sunglasses, depositing them in the nearest bin.
“Great, so is Jack. Atlas, you’re up.”
“No, Dylan I can’t,” Danny said, distress evident in his tone.
  “Why, what’s the problem?”
“No no no, there’s too many people, I can’t-“
“Atlas, they got Owen landing now!” Dylan ordered.
  “Okay.”
You took a deep breath, heading through a door into a big room with loads of tables and chairs.  There was what seemed like a buffet along one end manned by immaculate-looking people in chef uniforms. You caught sight of a flash of dark hair and your sister winked at you.
Moving to a corner, you made a show of walking along the side, admiring the displays of technology while keeping an eye on Lula.
“Atlas, the stooge has left the building,” Jack’s voice came over the coms.
“The circuit board is ours, I am moving backstage,” Danny informed.
Taking a deep breath, you made eye contact with Lula who was adjusting her chefs hat.
“Alright, Lula,” Dylan said, “Show these guys what you’re made of.”
You watched as your sister took a deep breath and hurried over to the meat counter, interrupting the man with the saw.
“I can take over from here,” she said, smiling at him, “Clark says your on a break.”
He frowned, “What break? Who’s Clark?”
Lula laughed, “Who’s Clark! That’s funny… you imagine if I told Roger that? He’d freak out!”
She punctuated her sentence by spraying something on the meat that created a sudden puff of flame.
“Don’t do that!” The man exclaimed, reaching out his hand as if to physically restrain her.
  “What?!”
You took this as your cue to begin drifting towards the counter, still gazing speculatively at the displays.
“Who the hell is Roger?” The man continued.
“Does Lisa know that you don’t know Roger?” your sister continued, her strategically baffled expression flustering the poor man.
“I don’t know who Lisa is.”
“Are you kidding me man, you don’t know who Lisa is now?”
  “No I don’t.”
  “Oh my god.”
  “Just get away!”
“No give me that! Don’t make me have to go to Brian!”
“I don’t know who that is! This is a dangerous tool, maybe you should-“
“Why are you acting like thi- aaahhh!” Lula screamed.
“That’s my cue,” you whispered, head shooting up just in time to see the saw dig into your sister’s arm.
Grabbing your first aid kit from your bag, you hurried over to the panicking chefs with your sister screaming in agony in the middle.
“Move please! Move! Paramedic coming through!” You commanded, pushing through the crowd of white uniforms.
“Someone hand me a towel!” You instructed, holding out your hand as you gripped Lula’s arm.
Somehow a black napkin made its way into your hand and you began tying it around the wound.
“Alright, try to stay calm, Miss. I’m going to take you to the bathrooms to get this cleaned up and looked after,” you said loudly, trying to draw as much attention to the commotion as possible. Out of the corner of your eye you saw Merritt lead Owens away. Good, the distraction was working.
“What is this? A miracle towel?” Lula was muttering, “You know what? This has shown me that I’m not cut out for this kind of work!”
With that, she slapped the man she’d been arguing with across the chest and allowed you to lead her away.
“Thank you, and goodbye!” She exclaimed, swinging her ‘injured’ arm and causing the fake severed hand to fling across the space and land in the meat spread. People gasped in disgust as the two of you quickly hurried out of sight.
“Nice job,” you whispered to her as you entered the bathrooms, checking to make sure it was empty before helping Lula out of her chef uniform and taking off your own floor length coat to reveal your leather jacket.
“You too. Now let’s go do what we’re actually good at,” she said with a grin before rushing out and down the corridor to the backstage area. With an amused shake of your head, you followed her, combat boots beating against the tiled floor.
Once backstage, you stopped next to Jack who was saying to your sister, “I’m actually nervous, and I’m not even going on stage.”
“You know, some say it helps — when your nervous — to picture each other naked,” she said, making you sigh.
“It’s uh, actually picture the audience naked,” Danny said, sliding up next to you.
You grinned at him, winking. His serious expression thawed and he smiled.
“No, no this is new. This is a new science. So we should…” Lula trailed off.
“Not in the right mood,” Jack said with a nervous laugh. You gave her a reassuring pat on the back.
“That just leaves you and me, old buddy,” Merritt said to Danny.
“What do you- oh. Picture each other- no. No thank you,” the illusionist said, shaking his head adamantly. You giggled lightly.
“Fine then. Y/n? How about it? I know from the neck up there are some issues, but from the neck down… the David.”
“Okay, that’s… nice,” Danny said, sarcasm dripping from his tone.
“Aw, don’t be jealous Atlas. I’m just having fun,” Merritt teased. You slapped his arm gently, rolling your eyes.
“…Owen Case!” The announcer said, indicating it was almost time for the four of you to make it onto stage.
“Good morning, Octa-lites,” Merritt murmured beside you, repeated by Owen on the big screen. Your mouth quirked into a knowing smirk.
“Now I’ve made the claim that Octa 8 is pure magic. But the truth is, that’s just one of those things I say… when in fact, I mean something else.”
The audience was beginning to get suspicious, catching on that something strange was happening here. You grinned at Danny as the two of you along with Merritt and Lula made your way to the space behind the big screens.
“What else do I mean?” Merritt and Owen continued, “Well, here to fill you in on all of my fabulous lies and hypocrisy, and to perform some of the most dazzling feats of magic you have ever seen…”
You could hear the audience’s excitement bow as they began to clock on to where this was going. The reality of the situation made you take in a shaky breath. In response, Danny’s hand found yours, squeezing it gently. You turned to look at him, breath caught in your throat.
“You’re gonna be great,” he whispered, “They’ll love you. It’s impossible not to.”
You gave him a grateful smile as you all braced yourselves.
“They are the world’s greatest magicians, here to expose me for the fraud I truly am. Ladies and gentlemen, here are the Horsemen!”
The four of you ran at the board, aiming for the trap doors you knew were hidden in them. With a jump, you broke through, landing on stage in front of blinding lights.

“I can’t believe you broke into their apartment,” you hissed, swatting your sister on the arm as she stuck her tongue out at you.
“Your just jealous because I got to see the great J Daniel Atlas before you did. If it’s any consolation, Ididn’t get to see Jack,” she said, winking at you in a very conspicuous way.
You fought the blush that threatened to make its way onto your face. Lula was the only person on the planet that knew of your celebrity crush on the head Horseman, and that was just because you knew each other so well it was impossible to keep secrets.
“Shut up,” you muttered through gritted teeth, casting a pointed look in Dylan’s direction. The older man was typing away on a laptop resting on the kitchen counter. Luckily it didn’t seem like he’d heard anything.
“…broke into my apartment, alright?” A familiar voice echoed through the door at the top of the stairs, you straightened, running a hand through your hair nervously.
“Some amateur who knew everything about me, everything about Henley leaving, and everything about us,” Atlas continued, coming into view on the platform. Refusing to let any silly feelings get in the way of your job here, you forced yourself to breathe evenly. Lula grinned, jumping up and down next to you.
At the sight of your sister, Atlas ran a hand across his chin in dismay and leaned against the railing, “That’s her.”
“Hey!” Lula exclaimed, raising her hands above her head, beaming. You buried your face in your hands and shook your head, embarrassed for her.
“Hi,” Atlas said, exhausted defeat coating his tone. You dropped your hands, giving the three men a little wave, an apologetic wince on your face.
Dylan stood up and addressed the Horsemen, “You’ve met Lula.”
Atlas grimaced, “I’ve met her. But not the other one, who’s she?”
You took this as your cue to introduce yourself, “Um, yeah. Hi. Name’s Y/n.”
He nodded, “Nice to meet you,” then immediately turning to Dylan, “What are they doing here?”
“Well, we’re the new Horsemen!” Lula declared, making you want to curl up and die.
Atlas looked at you as if to ask ‘is she serious?’ You shrugged, “She’s right.”
“We’re the new girl Horsemen!” Lula continued, completely unprompted by anyone. To your utter dismay, she proceeded to whoop and cheer, waving her hands as if to tell them to join in.
“Lula… Lula,” you said softly, pushing her hands down.
“Nobody?” She asked, infinitely confident, “No excitement? Jack?”
“Dylan,” Merritt said, “Dylan, what’s going on?”
The three men began the descent down the stairs as Dylan explained.
“Well, Lula and Y/n have been on the underground scene for the last… decade, and I think they have some real talent and I’d like to try them out on stage to balance out the duo.”
Throughout this speech, Lula was nodding enthusiastically, a wide-eyed smile on her face. You just watched the three Horsemen with caution.
As you guessed, Jack protested, “What? No man, I thought you said after Henley left that I could get back on stage again, not someone who just showed up!”
He advanced on Dylan, the older man putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
Lula waved enthusiastically at Jack as he passed the two of you, Merritt and Atlas following close behind. When it was clear Jack wasn’t going to react, she turned to wave at Atlas who returned it halfheartedly. He met your gaze, quirking his brows in greeting. You gave him a tight-lipped smile, trying to calm your erratic heart.
“I’d said I’d think about it and I have, and I really need you behind the scenes with me for a little while,” Dylan said, an apologetic look on his face.
Jack sighed, “C’mon Dylan, I’ve been behind the scenes my whole life.”
“Which is a crime, might I add,” Lula interjected, making you wince, “Have you seen that man’s face?”
You tried not to think about the fact that Danny Atlas was standing right next to you, watching the whole encounter.
At your sister’s comment, Jack stared at her with a mix of confusion and awkwardness.
“As much as I appreciate the addition of some femininity to the group over an above what Atlas provides,” Merritt began.
You actually smiled at that, huffing a soft laugh and prompting a shocked look from the man in question.
“I think the real issue is that we’ve been in this-“ Merritt continued, but was interrupted by Atlas.
“Yeah, the issue is we have been rehearsing for months, for something… we don’t even know what it is-“
“You’re gonna keep working until-“ Dylan tried, but Atlas interjected again.
“Until we work as a single organism, I know. I’ve heard you say that,” he said, frustration leaking into his voice, “Thing is, when you say that, what I think your referring to is us,” he said, gesturing to everyone but Dylan, “you know, not you.”
“Listen, I’m getting my orders directly from The Eye, okay, and then I give them to you. Now if you don’t like that, you’re welcome to go,” Dylan said. You froze. You had been completely unaware that tension was so high between Atlas and Dylan. Would you and Lula joining help or just make the situation worse?
“No, I’m not going anywhere,” Atlas said, “But I’m… hm… I’m taking care of myself.”
“Guys,” Lula said, drawing the brunt of the attention away from the cat fight seconds from happening between Dylan and Atlas, “Can I just weigh in, because I think I see what’s going on here.”
You shook your head, “Uh, Lula, I don’t think you do-“
“You guys are this amazing, tight knit family unit,” she continued, completely ignoring your warning, “Y/n and I are these new people stepping in-“
“No no no no, we are not a family unit,”Merritt protested.
“Well, our mother… literally knifed our father in the neck one time, so you’re kinda like our family unit,” Lula said.
Atlas’s head turned to look at you, his eyes wide. You winced at the memory.
“Literally?” Merritt asked, disbelief clear in his tone.
“Uh, yeah, it was an accident,” you said, then added, “at least we think.”
“Okay…” the mentalist said, changing the subject quickly, “So does this mean we’re actually going to do something?”
  “Yes,” Dylan said.
Silence fell for a moment. The five Horsemen looked at each other in shock. You met Atlas’s gaze for what felt like the millionth time so far. He quirked a brow — a mannerism you were beginning to realise he did a lot.
“You’ve all heard of Octa and they’re playboy CEO Owen Case?” Dylan asked, looking around the circle, “His partner Walter Mabry died about a year ago. You wanna know what all this has been leading to?”
“Now?” Lula asked before pulling out the blueprints Dylan had brought with him to the apartment.
“Octa’s holding a launch of of the next gen’s cell phone. Once these phones are on the streets, he’ll cipher the user’s information for the Black Market. Meaning Octa’s selling privacy to up their profit, so The Eye has decided to expose him for it. Our mission is to hijack the show.”
You looked around at everyone’s faces. Their grim expressions matched your own.
“Rehearsal’s over guys. This is what we’ve been waiting for. Now it’s time to get to work.”
