129. Atlantis: Milo's Return (2003)

I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).

The general pitch is as follows :

AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.

In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.

They bond :)

Working on the jing yuan asks (miss ella im looking at yours and going feral) but also have jiaoqiu on the brain… I need to know more about him when he releases to get a good grasp on writing him but.

thinking hard about how irritated he is with how easily you love. How easily you fell for him. He sees it, heard people tell him that you have a huge crush on him. But his heart has been broken before. The logical part of him assumes you don’t know that but it irks him that you can love so freely and without regard for getting your heart broken. You just can’t help how smitten you are with him. Like a lovesick puppy with eyes only for him.

And oh he decides to teach you a lesson. Teach you that love isn’t all what it’s made out to be. It can be cruel, disappointing, world shattering, life altering. Would some say he’s leading you on? Using you? Perhaps. Maybe it’s some twisted way of him working through his own issues.

But oh when he has you so pliant and needy under him, your soft mewls and desperate moans—he decides once is not enough to teach you a lesson.

Is he falling for you? Absolutely not! It’s not denial. Sure he sees you almost every day. He seeks you out. Sets your emotions up high with gifts and loves the thrill in his chest when your eyes light up. The breathless look on your face as your lips are kiss-swollen and wet. The way you keep coming back for more because he’s only ever edged you and never let you cum for the sole purpose of getting you hooked on the promise of “next time, sweet girl. Be good for me.”

No, surely he has no feelings for you… and yet this little game has been going on for almost 3 months now. You’re none the wiser and think he genuinely loves you. He has been failing to realize his own hearts true intentions, shrouded in guilt and hurt

When I came across that "joke" from Tav to Quill and Z'rell's comment (plus Halsin), I had to take a minute to process what happened. Gale might be a bit silly and eccentric but he's the kindest, sweetest and most passionate character in that party. No wonder the poor man has deep insecurities to solve, so many people reduce him to an easy target! Ofc one of the side effects would be overconfidence and ambition as a defense mechanism. He's obv lonely; only Tara and Morena ever loved him for him.

his eccentric nature might be a part of it. he is loquacious, outgoing, and doesn’t see the point in hiding his enthusiasm. he is considered to be the weird one. naturally, wizards in general being seen as somewhat squishy and physically weak might also add to it.

personally, i really don’t like the implications of the (widely considered) autistic-coded character being the one who faces the most ridicule by far by other characters and fans (and larian) alike.

some might disagree with me on that, but i don’t find it funny by any means either. mostly it just makes me feel bad. “he deserves it. cocky, arrogant, hubris-ridden wizard needs to be taken down a peg” like he isn’t… y’know… already at his lowest. it also disregards the fact that much of his bravado is part of his carefully curated Great Wizard of Waterdeep™ persona that he has skillfully adopted to mask his general feeling of being defective. being fiercely proud of your skill and knowledge and being doubtful of having something truly worthwhile to offer are mindsets that can coexist. according to fandom, gale is either secret hubris incarnate that is only waiting to be unleashed upon the world or pure baby that can do no wrong. instead of a character that is just as flawed and traumatized as all the others, but no less deserving of genuine love.

to me, the constant ridicule just reads as further feeding into his deep-rooted insecurities and his belief that he (as gale, the person) isn’t someone who holds inherent worth. it really, really doesn’t sit well with me.

Happy Sweet 16, BBC Merlin!

The next two book dustjackets for the BBC Merlin book series are now (still partially) done! I still plan to make a how-to for these, as well as upload all the files for them, buuut not right now.

Symbols:

For Mark of Nimueh: Centerpiece is the Afanc egg with Nimueh's mark front and center on it, the top symbols are the pouch that Merlin used to heal Tom. Then the bottom marks are the water the birthed the Afanc, and the fire and wind that defeated it.

Poisoined Chalice: Morteaus Flower, of course. (The symbol of which I did reuse from my DVD book because I love how it turned out). The top two symbols are the two different cups that Uther and Bayard use, and the bottom marks are the ball of light that Merlin sends to help Arthur in the cave.
