Ottoman Mermaid for chloe.z.arts's historical mermay prompt list! I went overboard with the tiles on this one, but I had such a strong image of those beautiful tiled pools in the sun, with a mermaid lounging up out of the water.

(reblogs are greatly appreciated, it helps get my content out there! if you guys like what you see, please reblog it too <:D)
ok now but what if
you tried to convince miggy to watch the barbie movie with you.
...
Tumblr media
"pleaseeeeee..." you practically begged the man as he continued to stoically watch his monitors, his eyes glued to them and his stance frozen in a perpetual arms-crossed-over-his-chest fashion with, of course, his thick eyebrows furrowing together in an eternal angry face.
he didn't even have to say a thing to let you know his answer would be no. you groaned and leaned your head against the sofa you had installed in his office and kicked your legs against the ottoman, which you also installed in his office. "please!" you exclaimed in a more desperate, whiny voice.
he sighed. "no." he replied in the most curt, most patiently impatient manner you have ever heard anyone speak in your entire life. you groaned for the umpteenth time as you shot your arms up into the air and slumped them back down in an attempt to get his attention.
"but miggyyyy, peter's taking mayday to see it! why can't you take meeeeee?" you asked, still trying to get him to budge. "if he's going then ask him to take you with them."
"but you know just me going won't be any fun!" you complained again as you kicked your legs against the ottoman, probably about to break the poor thing if he rejects your plea again.
miguel sighed yet again as he turned around to face you, with him glowering over you as he raised an eyebrow at you. "what'll you gain out of seeing a bunch of plastic dolls you don't even play with anymo--" he cut himself off as he watched you fiddle around with a mermaid barbie doll. you turned to face him and stared back at him as he caught you playing, slowly putting the doll away on the table.
he ran his hand across his face and shook his head slightly. "you are a genius." he complimented you, his expression unchanging. you chuckled. "why, i certainly am." you said as you took pride in his statement, picking up the doll again and brushing her hair.
"but you lack maturity and proper focus on real important things." he told you in a cold voice, peering at you with those serious brown eyes that did not hesitate to throw reality down upon you.
you turned around on the sofa, putting your hands on the backrest and pouting at him as you copied his furrowed eyebrows exaggeratedly, earning another raised eyebrow and look of confusion on miguel. "what is that face, now? what are you doing?" he asked, a little tired of your antics.
you crossed your arms over your chest, mimicking his likeness. "being serious, being unfunny, being... you." you seethed in a cold voice, trying to act like his stern self, to which she took a deep breath in and clicked his tongue as he looked off to the side to think of what to do next for a moment.
"...lyla." he called for the ai assistant, who was in a hot pink barbie-themed dress with a light pink fur shawl and with a new pair of pink and black sunglasses. "what?" she asked. miguel stared at her dumbfounded, and you smiled cheekily at her new look. "aren't you having a barbielicious day, miggy?" she asked him with a smile.
you giggled as lyla kept posing for a non-existent camera as if she were on a runway, with miguel closing his eyes, putting his hands to his hips and sighing yet again.
"...book me two tickets to the barbie movie for the next screening." he finally uttered, to which you screamed your excitement over. "YES!" you yelled as you beamed, giggling happily as you kicked your legs over the ottoman, and lyla kept posing in front of miguel. "have a barbielicious day you two, because i booked for the screening today, toodles." she said as she flew a kiss at you, which you took and blew right back at her, causing the ai to giggle as she went away.
"you interfered with her coding to get me to say yes to us going to... the barbie movie?" he asked you in overworked disbelief. you smiled at him slyly as you got up and walked over to him. "let's just say... i needed to do some things to convince you to have fun with me sometimes, miggy." you said as you pulled out from your lab coat's deep pocket a ken doll with a frown and brown short hair, with a broad build and a... noticeable behind.
"look, look! my 3d modeling kits worked wonders, it's you as a ken doll, the miggy doll!" you exclaimed cheerfully, smiling widely as he looked at the doll and back at you. "and for the record, yes, i love him more than i love you." you said as you kissed the 'miggy doll', and he grumbled a little at the sight.
"i'm cancelling the tickets-" he was going to say, until you took his hand and gave him you 'can't-say-no-to-me' doe eyes. "i was kidding... i love you the most, miggy." you cooed as you kissed his cheek.
he blushed a reddish tinge across his cheeks as he felt over the area where you kissed him, and surprisingly, he cracked a small smile. "i... okay then. maybe the movie won't be so bad." he said as he looked over at you. "i want a doll of you now, though." he joked.
a/n: miggy's a barbie girl in a barbie world so fantastic, it's so plastic (and depressing)

Where would the twisted wonderland locations be in real world?
Has this post been done before..? I don't know.
Now, let's get the easier things out of the way.
Scalding sands are obviously somewhere in Arabic country. In the Wikipedia for Aladdin, it states that it is a middle Eastern tale.. The clothes seem similar to that of an Arabic country. Turquoise colour is however, often used in over here turkey, but... Turkey is not an Arabic country.. It is stated that Jasmine's clothes were inspired by South Asian clothing... In the wiki it states that Agrabah was also inspired by ottoman empire, the silk city's camel bazaar seems similar to that of an bazaar over here. Hm.. I think that it might be based off of Afghanistan, it isn't fun fitting at all, and I'm just throwing it off there, but it is definitely somewhere similar to there and ottoman empire.
City of flowers is, without a doubt, based off of France. Noble bell college is based off of the Notre-Dame de Paris, more specifically, île de la Cité, an island in the Seine River(this part was taken straight out of the Wikipedia article for Notre-dame de Paris). There isn't much more to say about it, as it was rather easy to find out about it.
Queendom of roses is probably based off of United Kingdom, as the original novel it is based off of was written in england(believe me I will have to do this. A lot.), in November of 1865. From what I was able to see in the manga, the architecture seems to be more modern, along with the clothes as well. That would make anyone from there... British, take that how you will.
Now.. Onto the trickier parts.
Sunset savana, it obviously takes place in.. A savanas. Savanas seem to be most common in northern Australia and probably in Africa, looking at the cards in the Japanese server, the clothes for the sunset savana seems to be resembling that of traditional African clothes, but I might be wrong on this I'm sorry, but I strongly believe that is the case! I am not too sure on the exact country though, probably somewhere similar to Nigeria as the clothes seem to be similar.
Coral Sea, I.. Genuinely don't know. I can't even track anything down aside from going with where the original tale of the little mermaid was written, which is probably Denmark? So... Danish fish mafia???? I don't know??? Azul's name means blue in Spanish and Portuguese, and Floyd means grey and grey-haired in Welsh???? I don't know, I'm confused now.
Shaftlands, it is.. Probably based off of either Germany or somewhere that speaks English, since Cater's last name is english and jack is either english or French, however, if I go off of where Snow White is written from, it's Germany, and the most memorable character from there is vil, who's last name is "schöenheit" which means beauty in German, so... It's probably based from Germany.
•harvest town is... Also in shaftlands, it's probably based off of a town in Germany, I don't know. Epel's last name, felmier, means farmer in Romanian and such, his first name epel sounds similar to the German word for apple, apfel.
Island of woe, another tone.. Where I just don't know. It is definitely based off of Greece for sure, as Idia's name means reserved, private and such, meanwhile his last name comes from the Latin word shroud, which is the name for a cloth that is used to cover over the face of the dead. Ortho means unharmed, safe and such, and plus, the name of the S.T.Y.X is probably based off of the Styx river in the Greek mythology that connects the earth to the underworld.
Briar valley, now.. Another one that is hard to settle for, however, if we go off with how daisomnia looks, it's probably somewhere in Gothic Victorian time, since daisomnia looks like a Gothic Victorian castle, going off of cars and such aren't used in Briar valley, it makes me fully believe that it is mostly based off of the Victorian era. The names... Malleus is the name of a well knows witchcraft, and his last name is, according to the fandom wiki, is deprived off of the words dragon or devil in Romanian and such. Gothic Victorian architecture seems to be most popular in Europe, we don't know much about the Briar valley sadly, but sleeping beauty the fairytale was originally written in.. French.
The final matches, this is all speculations on my part and this was for fun!
City of flowers-france
Queendom of roses-united kingdom
Sunset savana-africa, Nigeria
Coral sea-i... I don't know...
Scalding sands-an Arabic country/probably somewhere in South Asia, possibly Afghanistan
Shaftlands-germany
Island of woe-greece
Briar valley-france/possibly Romania, somewhere in Europe.

I'm gonna go with will + daddy issues, for the WIP ask game. :)
hey there :) this one is rough honestly and i dont know if it’ll ever get finished so here is a chunk of it. the part with el leads up to something else that causes more introspection but you'll just have to wonder about all that i guess
Tumblr media
Surprisingly enough, his body itself is what wakes him. Surprising because—it’s very early.
And he didn’t have a nightmare, and there was nothing else to disrupt his rest. No din from his alarm clock on the nightstand. No gentle yet unwelcome request for him to get up made by someone in his family. No symphony of construction work sounds outside or an ongoing chickadee whistle ringing through the world like usual. It’s too early for most of that. Barely sunrise, and the world basically seems dead to him.
He simply...woke up. All there is is his body, its circadian rhythm, carrying on, without even the faintest sunlight cues. This hasn’t happened in forever.
But it happened when he was four, and it was Christmas morning. And he was up before anyone else, including Jonathan. The steady whir of his baby brain and the ripple of his warm blood were synthesized in an internal song that woke him easily, like his body just knew he wanted to be awake. He tunneled under his heavy blanket and hurried to his parents’ room, where the bed was low to the ground and the ottoman was even lower. A perfect height for climbing. He made his way up to the bed and placed himself in the wide gap between the sleeping adults. Mom was already stirring as he squeezed his dad’s bicep and burrowed into his shoulder.
“Merry Christmas, Daddy.”
Inhaling sharply, he cringed at his son’s touch and grunted. “Get off, Will," was the command. There was the illusion of a laugh somewhere inside it, gruff and ironic. "Now.”
Will didn’t obey, but his mom was quick to remove him herself. He felt her palms slip beneath his underarms and lift him smoothly off the mattress. Then he found himself being set right back down, right next to her. He doesn’t remember being upset at that. He loved his father. He was actually entertained by Dad’s roughness at the time. Reminded him of the big rugged bears that were in his animal book.
That would change, but it would change slowly.
If it were a few weeks into the future, the surprising sensation of contentment from a good night's sleep might come close to making him forget his life.
Not this morning.
Eleven isn’t there. In her bed. His bed. At least, it used to be his.
He sits up and pulls clean socks over his feet. Leaving the mattress on the floor in his wake, he begins his search. “E-el,” he calls out to the empty hallway.
The house is different. Not physically. But it feels less balanced than it was in the spring, less private. It doesn’t feel quite like home. For the past week, it’s threatened to suffocate him. He envisions some vaporous spirit creeping in each night to push the walls in closer, to force the roof in, to knock on the lightbulbs up to the point of burnout. Something isn’t right.
(Hasn't their home always been a broken one?)
Recovering has never been easy, but it has never been this hard. When he was younger, he could make better sense of things. There was still so much he didn’t know about the world (he was always being sheltered from it), so facing a monster was more mind-reshuffling than mind-bending. When you are small, you’re given a percentage of the truth. For the rest, your imagination fills in the gaps. When he crashed his bike two winters ago, nose going red from the cold that wouldn’t compare to the Upside Down’s and the wind murmuring through the trees as if to warn him, he was terrified by the image of a faceless creature flitting past, yes, but shocked? Not really. At the time, he could be no more certain of the existence of demogorgons than he was about the existence of STDs or debt or ghosts or mermaids (what?) or mortgage. And he wasn’t sure about any of those things because they fit into the various truth-gaps.
The world isn’t a complete mystery anymore. He knows that most adults are unwilling to believe in monsters. He knows that most teenage boys are, too. Most teenage boys aren’t like him. In more ways than one.
From the hallway, he can smell no pancakes, which means Jonathan went to work. So did Mom. There’s another thing that makes him different; he is the only one who doesn’t work. Guilt has been hovering over him for a while because of that. He’s fourteen. Jonathan began working his first job when he was fourteen.
But he would never be expected to carry those same responsibilities because he’s Will. He’s a casualty. A kid that rose from the dead. And a kid at heart. He’s sensitive. Breakable. (Floral.) His dad used to let him know that, his mom treats him like that. She doesn’t mean to, and that makes everything worse.
They are right, though. And growing up seems so far away.
He isn’t ready for the earth to keep spinning. (It has never stopped. When he vanished, it didn’t stop.) What he would give to go back to before. Before he was sent to “Heaven” and back and everyone had to save him and keep saving him. Bob Newby isn’t alive to remember what he saved. That is among the things which torture him the most. Whether they want to or not, dead boys cause a big fuss.
(He's always caused a fuss.)
(He just wanted his father to love him. He didn't know how to be to make that happen.)
El is nowhere to be found. That is, until he steps outside.
There, at the end of the porch, she rocks lightly in their swing with one leg hanging down.
“Hey,” he greets amicably enough, though he recognizes the awkward note in his voice.
“Hello.”
“How long have you been up?"
“Not very long,” she says, thumbing casually through the colorful magazine in her lap.
He nods and sits in a nearby chair. Already, silence stretches between them like a rope bridge, measureless and tense. They’ve rarely spent time alone before, just the two of them, and for someone who has his life-preserver-in-human-form right beside him, he has little to say. He looks instead at the overcast sky, at the thick sashes of gray threading across it, and roasts his brain for a topic of conversation.
“I'm sorry you have to share your room with me at night,” she speaks before he gets the chance.
He shakes his head. “I don’t mind.” It’s a lie.
“Thank you.”
“What are you reading?”
She flips back to the front and shows him. It’s Seventeen. An issue from January. 1979. A flushed blonde girl graces the cover, posing behind the lines cutting calories without starving, should you try to change him?, and must you tell your mother everything?
She slumps and sets it on the swing. With her head down, she scrapes at her nail beds. All peeled and infected. Some of the exposed skin is dark. The broken tissue is trying to repair itself.
Some is a fresh, saturated red. He would suggest that she bandage them, let her borrow their hydrogen peroxide, but then she’d know he was staring.
“Nancy lent me a stack of these a while ago. I think they’re pretty, but they get boring.”
He lets a smile spread across his face, warm from the humid air that surrounds them. “You know, you can always borrow something of mine to read. If you want. Or, we could go to the library.”
“The library?”
“Yeah. They have everything there.”
She pitches her head forward expectantly. “More magazines?"
“And books. It’s mostly books. Upstairs, they have a shelf with VHS tapes. It’s small. The movies are old. But it’s cool.”
“Cool. I'm kind of sick of Nancy's magazines.”
“So...you wanna go?”
She looks at him with a quizzical expression and sits up straight, the pale fabric of her top (she hasn’t been wearing the things Max bought for her at Starcourt) smoothing itself out against her torso. Maybe she doesn’t want to wear bright clothing because she doesn’t feel like being seen anymore. Because she doesn’t feel bright. “It’s close by?”
“We have bikes, right? You’ll just ride my old one. It’s not that small.”
“Oh. Okay. But we need to make sure we’re here at 12."
“Why?”
“Your mom. She left a note. She wants to talk to us when she comes home for lunch.”
He rises hesitantly, and she does the same. “Oh. Well, it’s probably about the funeral tomorrow.”
They begin to walk across the porch, and she bows her head. “I guess.”
“You know,” he says after a moment, “you don’t have to go. She won’t force you. If you think it’ll be too hard, just tell her, and you can stay home.”
“You don’t want me to go?”
“No, I didn’t mean—why would I not want—”
“Because I would like to go.”
“Okay,” he says. “So you’ll go.”

The story of Trine Bødker, who was the wife, and widow, of a sailor portrays a counterproductive relationship with other elements of the local communities, as her life story was portrayed by Pontoppidan contrary to the facts surrounding her actual life; as her name being misused in his journalistic pursuits. In Sweeney Todd, among other works such as Disney’s Little Mermaid, and accounts related to the Ottoman sultan Ibrahim, women related to maritime employees are “thrown in the sea” by the midwife of “the court”. The motiff is recurring throughout history in examples where “legitimacy” disputes are presented as a means to disown women, children and widows of benefits legally owed to them. A pattern of “driveby-ruin” is a visible method repeated, as it was sought in the case of Esther, described by the Danish National Museum, who was stalked, harassed and persecuted repeatedly by traffickers before being documented as entering an asylum. The persecution began with women. Women began to verbally persecute her until a number of persons were linked to Esther’s course of being trafficked. She’s recorded to have repeatedly defended herself in meetings with the police untill her record ends. https://www.instagram.com/p/CjnKX8WtCDq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Things I Want in Sims 4
Tumblr media
As someone who plays on PS4, I don’t have access to CC or mods, so I have to rely on the game makers giving me the sets I want to play. So, I figured I’d make a list of everything I want out of Sims 4. In the simplest terms, I want a Royal pack next from the Sims team.
- A Royal Family/Monarchy system complete with lines of succession, audiences with the common folk, crowns and tiaras in the hat section not attached to hair styles, royal thrones for the king and queen that aren’t a movie prop or a simple enough chair, arranged marriages as an option, private tutors or private schooling as opposed to public school for the royal children, and more. Like with different types of Celebrity, there’d be a mechanic for good kings, bad kings, and even for figurehead kings. Of course, women could hold the throne as well. Some might say it’d be weird to include royalty in a modern setting like the sims, but in a game with Vampires,  Aliens, Mermaids, and Plant People, I don’t think having a king is really all that absurd for the Sims.
- Longer Dinning Tables (or just the ability to make tables longer) Because when you’re building a fancy house, sticking three dining tables together doesn’t look as good as having one long table.
- More Furnishings From the Queen Anne Category Nothing makes a house look luxurious than items from the Queen Anne decoration category. However, it is also one of the shallowest styles, and would benefit from adding even more objects to make houses look lavish and fancy. Doors, Windows, Paintings, Wallpaper, Flooring, Misc Decorations, Wall Decorations, and Plants would all benefit from giving us even more looks.
- More Fancy Clothes for CAS From Medieval-inspired clothes to French Rococo and Baroque designs, Renaissance costumes, Tsarist Russian fashions, Victorian attire, and Ottoman Turkish styles should give a nice wide variety of royal attire. This would of course also include hairstyles, powdered wigs, crowns, crown jewels, military jackets for the gentlemen, and whatever else.
- Carpets on Staircases It’s just an aesthetic I like that I’m surprised hasn’t been implemented yet.
- Assigned Seating Have you ever put multiple tables in a house only to find that your sims keep eating over the trash or in the most random rooms possible? I’d like the ability to assign a place at the primary dining table as the place to eat their meals. This would likewise ensure nobody but the King and Queen has the gall to sit in the royal throne.

hi i was wondering if youd read/recommend the book animal geographies? i was thinking about reading it off a friends recommendation but they normally dont read much on ecology so. i figured you might have a more discerning eye.
thanks no matter what, i really appreciate the excerpts you post on your blog a lot
Hi. Thank you for the kind words and support.
Wanna preface my response by saying that I never want to place too much value/attention on academia, physical books, formalities, institutions, European/US knowledge systems and their hegemonic “classifying imaginations”. In other words, it’s cool to be careful to not to place too much emphasis on texts/books, especially when we’re specifically reading about animal autonomy and critical/radical perspectives on human-animal entanglements in colonialism/imperialism/extractivism. But there are some good books. I’ve read Animal Geographies. Pretty good for the time that it was published, which was 1998. But there has just been such an enormous amount of new thinking/writing that has happened, especially since 2010-ish (in the past 10 years or so), featuring more focus on animal agency/autonomy and featuring newer, non-white, non-Western, anti-colonial perspectives and better holistic and/or interdisciplinary inclusion of other disciplines (human geographies, imperial histories, etc.) that it now seems introductory or dated.
It’s an anthology. A similar, newer anthology I’d recommend would be something like
-- Animal Places: Lively Cartographies of Human-Animal Relations (2018, edited by Bull, Holmberg, and Asberg).
-- Critical Animal Geographies: Politics, intersections and hierarchies in a multispecies world (2017, edited by Kathryn Gillespie and Rosemary-Claire Collard)
-- Affect, Space and Animals (2017, edited by Jopi Nyman and Noraa Schuurman)
-- Shared Lives of Humans and Animals: Animal Agency in the Global North (2019, edited by Tuomas Rasenan and Taina Syrjamaa)
-- Historical Animal Geographies (2018, edited by Sharon Wilcox and Stephanie Rutherford)
(I prefer to cite/learn from diverse sources. Unfortunately, all of these anthologies are from the same "human-animal studies" publishing series, but still.)
I like anthologies because sometimes we/readers don’t have time/attention for a full-length investigation/book and sometimes it’s nice to get snippets, like a sampler platter, of various threads of new thinking, especially since a lot of the language in “critical animal studies” disk horse is so new.
-------
Not to knock A.G. though. Animal Geographies would probably be included in a list of “classics” of the genre, along with Crosby’s Ecological Imperialism (1986), Harriet Ritvo’s The Animal Estate: The English and Other Creatures in the Victorian Age (1987, though I also love her other related book, The Platypus and the Mermaid and Other Figments of the Classifying Imagination); Virginia Anderson’s Creatures of Empire: How Domestic Animals Transformed Early America (2004); and Breeds of Empire: The ‘Invention’ of the Horse in Southeast Asia and Southern Africa 1500-1950 (published in 2007 by Bankoff and Swart, who explicitly criticize the eurocentric focus of “animal studies” and environmental history disciplines). There is a whole array of these kinds of animal studies books/articles that focus specifically on Victorian British/US manipulation of animals and taxonomy, race, geography, colonialism, etc.
But by around 2010, anti-colonial and non-Euro-American stuff got far more attention in formal publishing, and the agency/autonomy of animals as actors and living beings got much more attention also. Some of these “new classics” include Kathryn Yusoff’s work; Gorgeous Beasts: Animal Bodies in Historical Perspective (an anthology from 2012); Anna Tsing’s The Mushroom at the End of the World (2015); Centering Animals in Latin American History (an anthology from 2017); and Mikhail’s work like Nature and Empire (2011), The Animal in Ottoman Egypt (2016), and Under Osman’s Tree (2017).
After 2017-ish or so, studies on animal autonomy, animals as agents, animals in imperial/colonial context, etc. have flooded bibliographies. Some of the publishers which promote a lot of this kind of work: University of Arizona Press, University of North Carolina Press, UC Press, and Routledge.
Hope this helps. :)

Rowaelin Month Prompt: I just realized I'm desperately in love with you.
Rowan assists Aelin in finding a dress for a gala she's attending...with someone else.
No Warnings; Word Count: 1,707
Read on AO3
a/n: My first Rowaelin fic! Thought it would be fitting to try it out during Rowaelin month...even if I do have something else I've been working on for a while now. I'm still new to the fandom and writing them, so kinda testing the waters with more of a vignette.
Tumblr media
Rowan couldn't explain it.
He literally didn't have the words, a reasoning behind why he was there. Sitting on some stiff, brightly colored ottoman in the viewing area of the women's changing rooms, crimson purse resting on his lap. Like a simp, as Aelin would say.
Not that he should be surprised. He'd been friends with Aelin for five years, when they met junior year of college. And he'd never been able to say no to her. Not since day one.
It wasn't his fault, though. Aelin was ridiculously persuasive. And he was a brilliant friend. This wasn't the first time she'd dragged him to the mall to find 'the perfect outfit'; he doubted it would be the last.
Working through a game of solitaire on his phone, Rowan barely heard his name being called from the first stall just as its door opened.
"Can you do the zipper up for me?" Aelin requested, walking out into the larger space, not looking like she even bothered to try herself.
Rowan tried not to stare as she glided toward him, the floor-length gold gown cascading down her body as if she were one with the sun, with fire.
Despite her pale complexion and blonde hair, she'd found a shade of gold that complimented her perfectly, its thousands of tiny sequins and beads making the dress truly sparkle. Like a golden version of what Ariel wore when her father makes her human at the end of 'The Little Mermaid'.
Shit. Aelin really needed to let him pick for movie night every once in a while.
"Yeah," he breathed, sliding his phone into his pocket and standing up, leaving her purse on the cerulean ottoman he'd been sitting on. He was happy to have a chance to stand up. The seat had been as stiff as it looked plush.
Aelin pivoted, pulling her long, wavy locks in front of her shoulder, leaving her back entirely exposed.
The back of the dress was open, the straps as close to the arms as they could be, leaving her shoulder blades and top half of her back completely bare. Her skin looked smooth beneath the light, and the way she was standing had the bones of her blades sticking out slightly, just enough to show a definition in her back.
The zipper started just above her butt, the fabric flapping over itself, tantalizing him with a view of her lower back. It wouldn't have taken much maneuvering for Rowan to get a glimpse of her underwear.
Not that he ever would, but the desire to do so had shocked him enough to give him pause.
Fighting an instinct to brush his fingers against her cream backside, he fastened the tiny clasp and then found the zipper, pulling it up easily, the dress tightening just enough to hug her curves completely.
She turned, his arms dropping as she did, her eyes wide as she took a step back to put the full dress on display as it was meant to be seen.
The elegant gown was surprisingly modest in front, considering the low back. The high neck had a jeweled flower accent at the neckline, which covered her defined clavicle - the design covering the straps that snaked over her shoulders diagonally before they followed the path he'd tracked earlier down the sides of her back. Despite the large, fake gems of the design, it was still incredibly subtle against the fully sequined dress. The bodice clung to her in a way that showed off her well-toned body down to the top of her thighs, where it then flared out just enough so that in fell loosely, pooling around her feet.
Aelin was breathtaking. Completely so in a way Rowan had never noticed.
He knew she was beautiful, of course. With her delicate features and bright blue eyes rimmed in gold. He'd never not thought she was pretty. But, like this…Rowan had never seen her equal. Never even imagined her equal.
The air had been stolen out of his lungs, his heart racing as Aelin looked at him nervously.
"So, what do you think?" she asked, twirling slowly for him.
It didn't help. Only made Rowan even less aware of what was actually going on as he pictured Aelin, in that dress, dancing with him. Tossing her hair back flirtatiously, laughing in that sensuous way she does when she's trying to seduce someone, eyeing him hungrily from across the room as he did the same.
"Uh…what?" he stuttered, blinking in an attempt to shake out the thoughts he'd never expected to flood through him.
"The dress?" She gave him a tentative smile that made him inhale sharply. She never smiled at him like that, a fact that hadn't escaped his notice. He just didn't know how much he wanted her to until she finally did.
He ran a hand through his silver hair before resting it at the back of his neck, his tattooed arm bent in the position. "You look amazing."
"Yeah?" Her face brightened at the compliment and Rowan tried to convince himself to look away, but his pine eyes refused to, completely enraptured by her beauty. "You think Chaol will like it?"
And just like that, reality struck. His fists tightened involuntarily and Rowan felt as if a bucket of ice cold water had been dumped over his head at the question, the mere mention of her boyfriend's name.
Well, boyfriend was putting it strongly. They'd barely started dating. But Aelin seemed smitten. And he was bringing her to some fancy, high-class gala - like the obnoxious private equity investor he was. It was the type of event important, dignified people would attend, spending money on gods-know what, all in the name of some charity they probably would forget the second they left. An event likely filled with people Chaol worked with or was trying to impress, or both, and he'd put Aelin on display at his side, introducing her to the ones he knew, a big step in making her a fixture in his life. They'd talk and dance, and even if that wasn't enough to make Chaol want her for good, she'd then dazzle those same people who barely knew Chaol's name, despite all his efforts. They would smile and chuckle at her quick wit, be enamored by her beauty, and tell 'Mr. Westfall' that he's got a keeper there.
And Chaol would never let her go.
As much as she loved dressing up and dancing, and as much as she enjoyed the thrill of successfully charming someone, Aelin hated those types of events. The fake people and shallow conversations. The absurd amount of money spent on the party itself, instead of the charity it represented. The stuffy, judgmental atmosphere. Sure, she navigated it better than anyone, but Rowan knew she hated doing it. Especially without him, without her friend who would make it a game for her, challenging her to see which dignitaries she could and couldn't enchant.
Still, he knew she'd much rather curl up on the couch with a good book, snuggled into his side as he watched whatever game was currently on TV.
Well, maybe she didn't care about that second part. Or maybe she'd prefer it with Chaol.
The thought nearly destroyed Rowan.
"He'd be an idiot not to," Rowan offered, his voice low and raspy.
Aelin's nose scrunched slightly as she smiled widely, and Rowan found himself wanting to lean down and kiss it softly.
Another thing he'd never felt before.
His mind flashed through five years of memories. Of parties and beach trips, coffee runs, study sessions, movie nights, rock climbing. Bike rides around town ending in a picnic in the park, Aelin laughing freely at Rowan's dry humor. No one else ever seemed to understand it like she did.
Karaoke nights at the local bar. She always had to pick a 'female anthem', as she called them, her favorite being 'This One's For the Girls'. Escape rooms that left them all completely shattered, except Aelin and her damn need-to-know-basis plans. Rowan trying to teach her how to play video games. Those nights often ended with him playing solo, Aelin watching him in amusement.
Bowling, where they'd go to the alley with their friends and always end up split, the guys' lane versus the girls' lane. The constant teasing from the girls for being undefeated, because they never realized that Aedion and Lorcan would throw every game just to see Lys and Elide smile. The boys knew. But not even Fenrys could tell that Rowan was doing the same thing.
Rowan hadn't even realized until just now.
But how could he not, when her smile could light up the entire town? When she would laugh out his favorite song at the joy of a win?
Every happy memory washed through him, taking his mind over completely as he looked at that scrunched up smile. The one she wore out of excitement at the thought of looking good for some other guy. Some prick who didn't know the difference between fantasy-adventure-romance and fantasy-romance-adventure books, and who'd never pay enough attention to the hour-long rant Aelin could easily give on the subject.
"Thanks so much, Rowan!" Aelin moved closer and stood on her toes, kissing him softly on the cheek, the scent of jasmine and lemon verbena freezing him in place as she walked to the dressing room to put her actual clothes back on.
His heart started to pound in his chest, as if it were trying to break free from him and get to her. His hands suddenly became clammy, even as his fingertips chilled, and his legs seemed to shake internally like they did with a bad hangover.
Yet, with all of that, a warmth spread within him. A tingling sensation that innerved him, but also excited him as he let it engulf his very being. A word that echoed through his body, a comfort and a stressor.
A home he desperately wanted to claim, though he doubted she'd let him.
Still, he'd have to try.
How could he not? After all these years? When he finally saw it for the first time?
When he finally realized he was fiercely in love with Aelin.

Ariel for the Disney Princess Meme ask?
alright i am awake let's do this
Favorite thing about her?: This is gonna sound super weird but I love her animation when she's mute. She is SO expressive and animated and you can tell exactly what she's thinking and feeling just by looking at her, which is exactly what visual storytelling should be about.
Least favorite thing about her?: what the HELL was her characterization in little mermaid 2
Do I like her movie?: YES, HARDCORE. little mermaid is definitely one of the best disney movies with one of the best soundtracks, and also no she did not sell her voice for a man you idiots, she just wanted to be human and eric was like a bonus--
Favorite outfit she wears?: blue dress with bow when she goes out on the town
Favorite song from her movie?: when me and my sister were kids we used to position ourselves on the ottoman and reenact "part of your world reprise" to our hearts' content
Favorite animal (or human) friend she has?: flounder is fun, but also sebastian has a special place in my heart from me and my sister tying our sebastian plush to the back of our dresses like melody
Which trait of her personality do I most see in myself?: "part of your world" is the most autistic special interest song i've ever heard
How would I rate her prince?: oh this boy is NUTS and i love him, awesome
Where does she rank on my top 10 favorite princesses?: high up! would die for her without question
Put a Disney princess in my ask, & I’ll answer~
