Hello, this is Alice. Some of you may know me as striped-shirt-dahmer-supremacy. I was here for a short period before my blog was reported and deactivated. As everyone in this little niche community knows, there has been drama between the so-called elites and the rest of the community for the past month. I belonged to the private server of the so-called elites. I am not making this post to add fuel to the fire or instigate more drama. I am simply making this post to come clean and speak my truth.

Yesterday, I left the server and deactivated my discord account after being messaged by a member of the discord because she had come across some information that she perceived as being complicit in "making things worse" with the ensuing drama. I do not handle being confronted in an angry manner well, and did not calmly or rationally reply. If I'm going to be honest, I also do not like the member who confronted me, so the exchanged was already negative right off the bat. Further more, I do not take kindly to her demanding that I respond to her. I actually do have a life outside of this community, so contrary to whatever she may think, I was in the middle of attending to other things that morning and really did not appreciate being demanded that I reply to her.

After thinking it over today, I've realized I regret not reaching out to certain members of this community, because despite everything, I did consider some of these people my friends. However, I left the server and deactivated my account, so I can't. So after mulling things over, I decided to come here and write this post.

Anyways, the truth is this: yes, I was friendly with Kiera aka doin-a-dahmer. I felt her banning was unfair, but I also felt the entire situation was blown entirely out of proportion by both sides. Everyone should've talked the situation over. It didn't mean Kiera had to stay in the discord, but maybe things could've ended on a less sour note. Because I was friendly with Kiera, I did send her screenshots of some of what was said about her. I didn't divulge this to the rest of the discord because I knew everyone would've been angry at me. But I say this to all of you - don't act like you wouldn't have done the same thing for your friend. You know if one of you had been banned, you would've done the exact same damn thing. As much as everyone there loves to claim to not want drama, we all enjoy it. And I can't lie, I enjoyed it too, which is partially why I sent Kiera these messages in the first place and also stuck around the discord. But I'm also not a complete monster like I'm sure everyone feels I am now. I also considered you guys my friends and wanted to stay part of the discord. I felt bad about what I did, and I also felt like the drama was getting out of hand, and I no longer wanted to be a part of it. So I decided to block Kiera and moved on. I hoped the drama would be over, but of course it wasn't. You all know what comes next.

The reality is, no one is innocent in this situation. This could've all died down if the rest of the discord had stopped responding to Kiera and her group and just blocked them and went on their way. It also could've ended if everyone in Kiera's discord had done the same. It really doesn't matter either way, I'm just tired of everyone on either side pretending they are victims. I'm not going to pretend to be a victim either. I enjoyed the drama and added fuel to the fire. I made fun of Kiera and other members of this community because it was fun. I know it makes me seem like a piece of shit, but don't act like the rest of you don't do it and enjoy it, too. Save for a few members who left our discord because they did not like the dram and never actively engaged in this behavior, we ALL kept the drama going because it was fun. It basically became the main topic of our discord, so lets not sit here and pretend we didn't like it. Not even a certain member who loves to sit around with lecturing everyone about how the drama needs to end, pretending she is so above all of it with her sanctimonious, holier than thou attitude, white continuing to fan the flames herself. You know who you are.

To my friends in the discord, I say, from the bottom of my heart, I am genuinely sorry for the hurt I've caused you. I really did care about you and like talking to each and every one of you. I really meant it when I said I considered you my friend. I reacted poorly because I knew there was no way what I did would be forgiven. However, I owe it to all of you to apologize to you. I'm ready to put this chapter of my life behind me and move on, but I wanted to say I'm sorry to each and every one of you. I wish all of you the best and hope you can put this drama behind you, too. I also apologize to Kiera for not sticking up for you. I should've been a mediator on your behalf. Maybe I could've helped so things didn't reach this point. I was an idiot who wanted to be part of a group and didn't want to get banned. Even if I didn't agree with all of your actions, I should've done better by you. For that, I am sorry.

And to the person who DMed me, I won't be naming your name, because I know you would love the attention. You can thank me for making this post and giving you more drama to milk for attention in the discord at least. You're welcome bb! Since you were demanding yesterday to know the truth about what me and Kiera talked about, here you go. The truth is, we began talking because we couldn't stand how you always engage in drama and then when you tire of it, you feel the need to lecture everyone about how it's over and tell everyone else what they should be doing. We couldn't stand your holier than thou attitude. We couldn't stand how it's blatantly obvious that you're a narcissist who dominates the entire chat with your drama and makes every god damn thing about you. Your need for attention and validation was so fucking annoying that it actually brought us together. We also got a good laugh about your atrocious fanfic. It has nothing to do with the fact that we were bothered you "straight washing" Jeff, because personally, I couldn't give a shit. It truly is just one of the worst pieces of writing we've ever had the misfortune of reading! Seriously, you are probably the worst writer I've ever read in my life, and there is a lot of garbage out there. For a story with basically nothing but smut, it's painfully unsexy. The sex scenes are straight out of every shitty misogynistic porno, except they're so completely devoid any anything remotely sexy. And I'm sure you're going to read this and post in the discord about how "funny" it is that you "live rent-free in our minds," but the truth is, it was hard for us not to notice when you never shut the fuck up about yourself. But a narc is gonna narc, I guess.

I have trouble with my fanfics. I never really like them and I’m not sure if other’s enjoy them. I don’t get that many compliments or votes. What should I do? I want feedback.

Hi anon! It's always rough when you're feeling down about your writing. For that first part, unfortunately all you can really do is - you guessed it - practice. Keep writing! I know, nobody likes to hear that, but you've got to first and foremost allow yourself to write something that sucks. Just get it out onto the notebook, or word document, or whatever you use. That's always gonna be step one.

Secondly, think about what you enjoy about what you read, whether in fanfic or in other kinds of prose. What about it makes it enjoyable to you? Can you make note of anything that you can adapt into your own writing? Your old language arts and literature teachers probably had the right idea, that the best writers are also big readers. It's all about learning and adapting!

For specifically your own writing, if there's anything you're unsure of, I strongly recommend getting a beta, or at least a trusted writer friend that you can at least use as a sounding board. I personally have never used a beta, but I have people I can go to if I feel stuck on something or need to run a part by someone. Sometimes you can even find them in fandom communities!

Which then leads us to the second part of your ask - actually getting feedback. Now, I'm not sure where you post. I don't recognize the terminology of "votes", so if anyone can clue me in that might be helpful LOL. I personally do not post my fics outside of Ao3 and Tumblr. In the past I've also used FF.net and DeviantART. I have by far gotten the most feedback on Archive of Our Own, followed by fanfiction.net, but again, I don't use the latter anymore. I really like Ao3 so if you don't already, you might try posting there.

I also don't know what kind of fics you write, if it's with popular characters or a rarepair, if it's a huge fandom or a tiny one, on and on. Feel free to come off anon if you're comfortable and we can discuss this further. But I definitely collected my small handful of readers by simply being active in fandom - and by leaving feedback/communicating with other writers. I also would encourage you to look into fandom events, exchanges, Big Bangs, even just fandom weeks! There are lots of low-stress ways to almost guarantee more feedback.

Now, if you're like me, and you're literally creating the tags you want to see in the world, there may not be others that you know of yet. BUT, frequent communication and leaving feedback on works that are maybe similar to your own can help build relationships! I also love joining fandom Discords because a ton of them at least have a writing/fic channel.

Almost every single writer I've traded feedback with, I either met through commenting on multiple of their fics, finding them through fandom tags on Tumblr, or meeting them in a Discord server. Usually one of the above feeds into the other two. It's scary sometimes but putting yourself out there really does lead to more feedback and encouragement.

Finally, you have to accept that not all of your fics will take off. Even the ones you're really proud of. Hell, I just made a post about that yesterday. Typically, it's not that what you're making is bad or poorly written. Sometimes it's just niche. Sometimes it's just not what people click on when they're going through the tag. That's why it's important to, as much as you can, write for yourself.

Bottom line, keep practicing, reach out to friends for feedback, hang out with other writers, and get active! Above all, though, have fun. I know it sounds silly, but when you're doing something for free, please make sure that ultimately you're enjoying it. You have one guaranteed reader: yourself!

what sucks the most about the decline of twitter is i follow a bunch of academic twitters on there and they give out interesting book and article recs, and now that twitter is becoming unusable and i can’t bulk export my fucking bookmarks easily for whatever reason, im in need of access to a wider academic network

like yeah tumblr has some blogs that offer great recs but still fairly niche

im also in academic subreddits but reddit is also in a trashfire atm

and that’s about it really in terms of social media although i do follow some accounts on tiktok and instagram but trying to archive shit on there is so fucking hard

idk kinda wanna start my own discord server that’s kind of my personal library but also welcome to friends to talk about what they’re reading and exchange resources that way and have that personal cozy touch

anyway, i’ll always have bibliographies, boring old search engines and academic websites to do my research but i’ll always be limited by my inherent specialization and i always enjoy following and interacting with people outside of my own expertise and environment of immediate exposure

How To Write Sex

So Your Characters Want to Bang

Welcome to my Ted Talk on How To Successfully Write Pornography! We’re going to cover a few bases here (first, second, third, and home base, to keep up with the metaphor), but feel free to reach out if you have any questions either on the Discord server or here on the Tumblr. If you take a look at my body of work you can see that a significant portion of it is explicit fic, which I’m told is a struggle for some folks. Apparently my CPU is 80% porn.exe, so I’ve got a bit of a niche. Additionally, I’ve got a medical professional background that includes a very specific nurse certification in sex-related shenanigans, so if you’ve got questions, I’ve got answers.

When I decide to write porn (or when my characters decide it for me), I have a few basic things that I keep in mind in order to make sure the story stays on track, the character arcs fit with the scenarios, and that everything doesn’t start to feel too formulaic. I’m going to share my methods and maybe you will find something that helps you out or inspires you to give writing explicit fic a try!

The Mechanics

Let’s start with the basics. Fictional pornography can start to feel, well, a little bit formulaic, especially if you read or write a lot of it. There’s a standard formula of kissing, rubbing, fingers, dicks (or other bits), everybody comes, the end! There’s nothing wrong with sticking to the basic formula, especially your first time (ha!), but here are some thoughts on how you can make sure you’re getting the specifics done and done well, and how to avoid feeling like you’ve written the sexual equivalent of an English essay.

Lubrication. It… really doesn’t matter exactly what kind of sex your characters are having, you can’t go wrong with lube. Getting things wet and slippery is half the fun and also twice the enjoyment. Sometimes characters decide to get it on in unfortunately risque locations, and lube may not be readily available - here is a nice list of MacGyvered lube solutions you may find helpful in that circumstance. That being said - if you are writing anal sex of some sort, lubrication is an absolute must have.

Preparation. Otherwise known as foreplay. Prep is and can be sexy! Everyone involved wants to have a good time, some preparation is required! I don’t just mean fingers in the butt (although that can be important too, we’re gonna get to that), but just generally building up the level of arousal over time adds to the dynamic you’re trying to create between two characters. Even if it’s fuck-or-die, sex pollen shenanigans, just talking about how hot the character feels for it is still a form of preparation/foreplay. Specifically speaking to buttsex - the amount of prep your character needs is heavily dependent on the circumstances. For your consideration - is this a first time sex situation, or does your character regularly bottom? Are they pressed for time, or is this a long, drawn-out affair? There is not (despite what fanfic writers would have you believe) a certain number of fingers that you have to insert into anyone’s anus that makes them ‘ready’ for sex. A person who regularly bottoms may not need any fingering at all, in fact, but they are still going to need lube. (See point 1.) If your character has never bottomed before, they’re going to need more time and patience than a character that does it a lot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they need more and more and more fingers. It just means they need a partner with consideration for their comfort. And lube.

Coming. People (and thus, characters) don’t often come at exactly the same time. Frequently someone comes first. The other person may not come at all! They don’t have to! If it’s important to you, that’s fine. But it can be fun to play with the dynamics of one character coming and the other character not, because they’re caring for the first character, or because they want to wait and enjoy the burn for later, or because of whatever other reason - which brings us back to character and story dynamic. Also, playing with this particular dynamic can make your pornography feel a lot less formulaic. Character B didn’t come because they wanted to wait and savor the feeling, and maybe in a few hours or days, Character A gets to really have a good time paying them back with a truly spectacular orgasm. Maybe they just really wanted to see their partner fucked out and happy, and coming really wasn’t that important to them. Maybe they’re sex-postive ace, or maybe they take medication that makes sex and orgasms hard to achieve, but they still enjoy the intimacy. It’s up to you (and your characters!), but it’s not necessary for both people to come for the scene to be satisfying.

Penetration. Penetration is not the end-all-be-all of sex. Penetration isn’t even required for something to be considered sex. Some people never want penetration, and that’s okay. This is a good time to consider your characters’ boundaries, a good way to involve consent, and a good way to consider what kind of bedroom dynamic your characters are going to share - even or especially if it’s completely different to the dynamic they share outside the bedroom. Is penetration necessary or important to the characters, the story, or the development of the relationship? Even if you just want to write it, that’s fine, but considering your characters’ perspective and feeling will give the act more depth and nuance.

Expectations (and subverting them so that whatever you’re writing feels fresh and different). Like I said before, there’s a certain amount of ‘this is what’s going to happen’ expectation in fictional pornography. A series of steps that you can pretty much guarantee is going to get you from point A to point F in the sexual alphabet. One of the biggest ways that you can make your sex scenes feel more intimate, more character-driven, and more unique is by subverting those expectations and doing something different that fits your dynamic better or isn’t “the norm”. For example, in a recent fic I had a character fantasize about what it would be like to have the object of their affection on their hands and knees - but when it came time for the sex, said character flipped the script and climbed on top instead! Fictional pornography isn’t real, and people don’t necessarily want realism in their fiction, but adding some realistic elements (oh no, I’ve lost the lube!/it turns out I don’t like this one thing can we try another thing/a hilarious thing has just happened) can be fun and unexpected, and make the reader more invested in your story.

So You Want To Add An Explicit Scene

You’re writing a lovely enemies to friends back to enemies to lovers arc and the time has come to do the do. I’m excited for you! I’m excited for your characters! But now you want to know how do I add this to my story organically? How do you make this feel like a natural progression of the story, how do you segue from fighting Doombots to sweating it up in the sheets?

The trick, in my experience, is to build up to that moment way before you get there. You have to lay the groundwork for attraction before anyone takes off any clothes. Does Character A get distracted during the fight by staring at Character B’s biceps? Was that an absolutely beautiful sniper shot at an impossible angle and it was so good that Character A’s breath literally catches in his chest and he nearly gets hit in the face by a robot fist? Did someone else in the battle have to remind Character B to pay attention to the fight? Is it movie night and Character A doesn’t even know the plot of the film because they’ve been too busy staring at Character B’s face in the light of the television screen?

A little pining goes a long way, but you have to establish attraction before your characters can act on attraction. It feels jarring to your readers if the characters hated each other two paragraphs ago and now they’re fucking in a public space. Even if it’s hate sex, you gotta have the POV character hate how attractive they find the other character. Then you just need an inciting event - one character takes off their shirt because it’s ripped from the fight, or they bump into each other in the communal kitchen and that hot line of their bodies pressed together sparks a kiss - and then you’re off and running!

The exception to this might be an established relationship Plot What Plot fic, but even then, you’ve probably got an idea that sparks the actual sex - include that in your fic!

Help, This Is Moving Way Too Fast!

Oh no, the pacing is off! It happens to the best of us, don’t worry. You get in a hurry (just come already, oh my god!), and you push through to the end and then on re-read or in beta, you find that the whole thing just feels flat and rushed. It started off so well, and then you lost something somewhere in the middle.

The way I combat this is by focusing on how the characters feel and/or how they react to what’s happening.

Someone’s mouth is on someone else’s body - how does the POV character feel about this? If they’re the recipient, is this the hottest thing that’s ever happened to them? Are they afraid to let go and enjoy it? Are they 404 Error: Brain Not Found? Play around with it. Does the non-POV character say something unbelievably hot/romantic/sappy/hilarious? What kind of mood are you trying to set? This is a character interaction as much as dialogue is, so you’re still working with the back-and-forth of two people who are communicating, but with their bodies. (And words too, to be honest). If the scene is too rushed, slow it down with some internal dialogue, external dialogue, or something emotional (like a realization or an acknowledgement - oh no I love them/oh no I don’t hate them/they always take good care of me). If the scene is too long (to be honest this rarely happens, but it can), consider whether you’ve added too much dialogue or other extraneous interactions that have slowed your scene and taken attention away from what’s happening.

Help, It Sounds Like A Medical Exam

This is nearly always a terminology problem.

I’m not here to tell you what words you can and cannot use in your sex scenes. Everyone feels differently about acceptable terminology (though we have all laughed at dick euphemisms). And that’s not even getting into writing fics with trans characters or different gender identities. Personally, I tend to use cock/dick for penis, and I avoid specifically naming parts for vagina-havers because I’ve never found a good one that I liked that I felt flowed smoothly in my own writing. So this one is more nebulous because it’s a personal choice you’re making about what words do it for you and what words don’t. It’s also, again, about your character’s perspective. If you have a character who prefers certain terminology, that’s the terminology you use.

Here’s what I can suggest. Don’t focus as much on the parts of the body you’re writing, and focus much, much more on the sensations you’re creating. There is a mouth on your POV character’s penis - how does that feel to them? Is it: hot, tight, wet, is there something happening with the tongue, are they sucking really hard, are they going really deep? Alternatively - is the non-POV character enthusiastic? Are they into it? Is how into it they are super hot to the receiving character? Are they sloppy but determined? Beyond the physical sensation, how about emotional reactions? Has your POV character never had this before, or has no one ever treated them with such tender care? Is it the best blowjob they’ve ever received? The worst? (This can still be hot - can the POV character give them careful, precise instructions on how to do it better? Does the non-POV character find THAT extremely hot?).

Keep in mind that you’re not writing technical directions for the characters in your scene. (Unless you are, because you’ve discovered Gentle!Dom!Bucky, who is telling Praise!Kink!Clint exactly what to do.) You’re writing a scene that conveys something emotional to the reader. Is it a sexy emotion? Yes, yes it is. It might also be a sad emotion, or a happy one, or any of the range of human emotions, really, but the point is that readers probably know how the sex works mechanically, what you’re trying to do is give them feelings about it.

Speaking of Feelings

Let’s talk a little bit about motivation. Yes, even sex scenes need motivation. Not to be the prima donna actor over here, but ask yourself: Why am I writing a sex scene?

Generally speaking, well-written sex scenes are better received if they accomplish a goal. Writing a sex scene well is easier if you have this goal in mind before you ever sit down in front of your computer.

Does this scene advance the story? By this I mean: is this an emotional resolution, does it convey something about the characters’ relationship that cannot be conveyed in another venue or does it better express that aspect of their relationship, does it have meaning beyond the immediate gratification of an orgasm or add to the fic in some way?

Does this scene advance the relationship? Is it a big step for one or both characters? Are you showing vulnerability/trust/compassion/concern/etc? Is it an emotional milestone? Is it an expression of love that one of the characters can’t make with words but can demonstrate physically?

I’m going to pull some very specific examples from my own work, helpfully crowdsourced and reviewed by a trusted friend so that I can talk more clearly about what I mean.

Russian Red: if you haven’t read this one, it’s a story about Bucky wearing lipstick and then giving Clint a blow job. That’s it, that’s the fic. When I put it like that, it doesn’t sound all that exciting, really, and maybe it doesn’t even sound like something you’d like. A man wearing lipstick may not be your thing!! That’s okay! (And as an aside, people enjoy reading/writing things that they have absolutely zero interest in in real life, and that’s okay! Fantasies are weird like that, and a normal part of human sexuality, and we aren’t judging anyone for their kinks here.) But this fic employs very specifically some of the points I’ve made so far, so I want to talk a little about it, especially foreplay and emotional investment.

Bucky wearing lipstick in this fic is not about Bucky at all. It is explicitly about fulfilling a fantasy for Clint. In fact, later in the fic, Bucky has a moment of insecurity about it because he had what he thought was a great idea, and in the moment of truth it becomes a bit of screaming panic because what if the whole thing is stupid!!!! We’ve all had that moment. So readers can relate. But also - throughout the course of the fic it becomes something that Bucky also enjoys and finds sexy. So there are multiple motivators: emotional satisfaction for Bucky because he’s doing something for Clint, physical satisfaction for Clint because he is getting his fantasy fulfilled, and then the added bonus of Bucky finding the whole thing unexpectedly hot means that he is also satisfied by the encounter. I have created an emotional need that is satisfied through porn.

Emotional investment (also known as the character is putting in work). Bucky goes through a lot to make this fantasy happen. He has to tell Natasha what he’s doing for one thing, which is uncomfortable. A little bit of character discomfort makes the payoff at the end better, because your reader is invested in your character having a good outcome! It also shows that Bucky cares about Clint more than he cares about the mild discomfort/vulnerability of asking Natasha about lipstick for a mildly kinky thing he’s doing.

Foreplay - the more invested Bucky gets in doing this thing for Clint, the more he starts to find it hot and exciting, the more like foreplay it becomes, which means the payoff in the end is that much better. (Revisit the point on preparation from earlier!). There is a lot of build up from the moment Bucky puts the lipstick on (tactile sensations, memories tied to lipstick, etc.) to the moment he leaves the very first red imprint of his mouth on Clint’s skin and realizes oh shit, this is hot.

This fic is very, very close, tight third-person POV. Keeping the POV so close and tight means that your reader is very much in your POV character’s head - the reader is getting their experiences (emotional, physical, tactile senses) but they’re only able to interpret the other characters’ motivations and reactions through the lens of your POV character. It’s trickier writing, but it means the reader is more connected to the character and therefore the porn. Also, it means that the reader is much more in tune with the non-POV characters’ reactions, which means incoherent mess is just that much hotter.

Personal Security/Security Failure: So these fics are… their own claim to fame in fandom. Gentle!Dom!Bucky and Praise!Kink!Clint have sexy, sexy adventures. The first fic is their first meeting, the second one is fondly known as Circus Spanking. If you haven’t read them, that’s the basic summary, but please mind the tags if you choose to explore this series. Here we’re going to hit on consent, which is important and sexy, and vulnerability/trust.

Again it’s very close, 3rd person POV, which means you’re very much in Clint’s head when he’s a wrecked, incoherent mess. In the previous fic Bucky was watching the incoherency happen, which is very hot. In this fic the reader is experiencing the incoherency. There’s also a lot of buildup in the first fic of Clint experiencing this inexplicable attraction to Bucky, and the confusion he has that Bucky is equally attracted to him - so like foreplay, you’re building it up before they ever take their clothes off.

Consent. If you are dabbling anywhere in the kink neighborhood I cannot express to you how important it is to include explicit consent. Please get a kink sensitivity reader. Don’t surprise your audience with dubious consent - make it clear and explicit from the start, even if it’s consensual nonconsent (which is a tag, but can also be addressed early with a line like ‘this is something they’d talked about previously’). But also! Consent can be sexy! It can be fun! It doesn’t have to be a drawn out contract of hard limits and detailed diagrams (though I have seen that done and done well!). Consent can be as simple as checking in with a partner if they’ve gone quiet or seem so wrecked they can’t express themselves. Consent can be one character telling another exactly what they’re going to do to them (hot hot hot!!), asking if they’re okay with it, and then doing exactly what they said.

Vulnerability/trust. Just like with the previous fic, vulnerability adds a sense of emotional intimacy that can be super hot. If you’re writing kinky fic, vulnerability and trust go hand in hand, and show how deeply invested characters can be in each other - and that they respect and care for one another as well. One character making themselves vulnerable to another with the understanding that the other character isn’t going to take advantage of that trust can be supernova hot if you employ it correctly. The key here is making sure that the character in the position of power respects the vulnerable character’s boundaries. Security Failure in specific sets up an emotional need (increased trust) that is fulfilled physically by the porn that follows. Clint needs to trust Bucky more, and Bucky needs to know that Clint trusts him. Clint making himself super vulnerable in this fic lets both of these needs be fulfilled.

Interactions outside the bedroom compared to interactions inside the bedroom. In this fic, I chose to have these mirror each other - Bucky is in control of himself and in command of the situation in all of their interactions, so before they ever get naked you know what to expect from the dynamic. What can also be fun, however, is subverting expectations, so that how characters interact outside the bedroom is very different from how they interact inside the bedroom - so this is another time when knowing what your characters want/prefer is important motivation for your writing!

Character moments in your porn - there’s a scene in the first fic where Clint (this is all Clint POV) thinks about how much he likes performing a certain act, because it makes him feel good and useful. It’s a very short interaction but it tells you a lot about the character - it tells you he likes to be useful, that he likes to be considered good (hello praise kink!), and it tells you he has low self-esteem which makes you want to wrap him up and a blanket and tuck him in and tell him how good and useful he is, but you also want Bucky to wreck him. Your characters still have characterization, even during porn. In the second fic, we see character growth that mirrors growth within the relationship, but there’s still room to grow because Clint is still uncertain and insecure, and the fic helps advance their relationship to a new level of trust. Through porn.

Communication, communication, communication. Especially in kink fic but honestly in most porn - your characters have to communicate with each other! It can be nonverbal, but you’ve gotta make it clear to the reader.

The Big Finish

Everyone came (or maybe they didn’t), now what CB?

Oof, good question.

To be honest, endings are the hardest (ha!) part. And luckily, we’re going to have a Workshop specifically about how best to accomplish them! But as far as sexy scenes and how to wrap them up and move on, I like to use resolution of whatever need I was trying to meet, and then open the next scene with something that demonstrates a new level of intimacy/relationship dynamic/etc. if it’s part of a larger storyline, or just fade to black if it’s a one-shot.

I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but this also depends on your motivation for writing your sex scene. If you were trying to accomplish something with the story, then you need to somehow demonstrate that goal has been met - are they more comfortable around each other now, are they happier to show off their relationship to their friends, are they finally admitting they’re in a relationship? If you were trying to accomplish something with the relationship itself (which, as you can see, may go hand in hand with the story), then how can you show that? Does the one who usually leaves finally fall asleep in the other person’s arms? Is there a big flowery declaration? Does someone crymax? Does one partner tenderly clean the other partner up with a warm cloth and snuggle them into submission? The world is your oyster! Do what feels right for your characters and the journey you’re taking them on!

Imo, a CC’s only responsibility in their fandom is to regulate how fans interact with themselves. Yes, they can talk on things like their views of politics or racism, but that doesn’t inherently stop the fandom from being one way or the other. It can help, because then the fandom knows basic rules of how they should regulate themselves, but all the actual policing HAS to be done within the fandom, not by the cc’s (at least in places like Twitter where anyone can come in and say anything and there is very little user control, vs something like a discord server with actual moderation abilities). If the cc has said ‘don’t be evil’ and then the fandom sees someone among themselves ‘being evil’, it’s up to them to first educate, and if that doesn’t work cut them off (via blocking or whatever). It’s not the job the the CC, otherwise it’ll just turn into a clustercuss.

On the stan note. It isn’t that the MCYT fandom is any more toxic or obsessive than another, it’s just much bigger and more in the public eye than those of the past. In older fandoms and fans with experience being in a fandom like with say, Homestuck, Supernatural, Naruto, hell even Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Pewdiepie- when those fandoms were 0-5 years old they were the most toxic places because it WAS mostly a bunch of kids who had no experience being in a fandom or on the internet. The difference between them and current MCYT is that they were usually in their niche places, they weren’t always on the trending page 24/7 or out in public (outside of cons anyway). You didn’t see billboards or hear their music on the radio, they didn’t show up on the news. They were in their own bubble in the back corner, so no one outside of said bubble could see that it was in fact a mosh pit full of kids who haven’t learned boundaries fully yet. The closest thing that I can remember that came somewhat close to MCYT’s level of publicity, fan works, in articles, and rampant ‘it’s everywhere’ism was probably My Little Pony when that was at its popularity peak. But MCYT has kind of entered more of the level of sports with how public it is. It isn’t ‘just another fandom’ anymore than the sports fanatics are ‘ just another fandom’. And if you look at those sports communities, they are full of super toxic douchebags who will riot if their team loses, aka, toxic Stans.

modern au red/milo dump while i try to get myself together to answer asks nd work on ATJ:

(tw for alcohol mentions near the end, also this is an EXTREMELY long post, its so long that even after i split it into categorized sections each section could be its own post)

CLOTHING

milo absolutely has no sense of fashion. i feel like this is basically canon - for the styles at the time, he dresses fairly basic, mostly focused on looking put together for his job (definitely dresses aimed more towards how he would like to be treated by his peers, despite his actual position - then again our best example outside of the expedition is when he's about to deliver what he considers the most important presentation of his life, so who knows, maybe he usually dresses like a slob). aside from that his main concern seems like practicality and comfort. his wardrobe is dominated by earth tones - beiges and greens set with white and greys. all of that taken into account, i can see him dressing like this in a more modern era:

basically- a lot of cardigans, usually collared shirts or comfortable turtlenecks (since he does still occupy a research position at the smithsonian, even if only in title), big ol' coats, khakis and chinos and slightly stiff dress pants complete with ironed creases. i can see him wearing similar clothes outside work, just more comfortable - jeans and knitted shirts, henleys, more turtlenecks, and comfy cardigans over short sleeved shirts. i dont really see him wearing a lot of prints, i think he'd veer more towards solid clothes in lighter colors, but maybe he has a few. hes definitely the kind of guy to think of wearing the single graphic tee he owns as "bold and wild".

im very married to the idea of him wearing converse though. i cant explain it. milo in converse keeps me going in this world

hes kind of broke so i think maybe he got the converse secondhand maybe? or a gift of some kind. aside from the converse i can see him wearing a lot of oxfords and maybe wingtips

i want to see him in a hawaiian shirt so bad. i am losing it at this thought. he buttons it all the way up to his neck like someones awkward dad. milo wears a hawaiian shirt to "let loose". he wears it with like, khakis. or knee length jorts AHHHHDJHDSGJHDSJGh

a tie??? does he wear his hawaiian shirt with a tie???? does he think it makes it look cooler?????????? i am sobbing

red is the COMPLETE opposite. in the canon 1914 setting, red is already very rebellious for an AFAB person of their era- theyre openly a suffragette, they frequently refuse to wear skirts even in public and dress in mens clothes even before they were openly nonbinary, despite not being accepted into the male-dominated research fields and colleges they continue to educate themself with or without help, they purposely aim for an "unfeminine" silhouette when they dress, refuse to wear corsets, etc. (spoiler alert- there's a clear reason they get on so well with audrey in ATJ)

theyre also easily mistaken by people that didnt know them prior to their transition for being just a very small/young cis man- even though they canonically have a very soft "traditionally feminine" face

so basically, in any era theyre set into, red is always gonna aim to be ahead of the curve- both in their personal beliefs and practices and in their fashion. theyre also very androgynous in their clothes, although they tend to aim a bit more masculine (thats partially due to the era though, and having been forced into skirts exclusively for their entire life- i think in a modern setting where its more acceptable for AFABs to dress and act in a less hyperfeminine way, theyd be more okay with a fluidity in their gender presentation).

all that taken into account, i can see them dressing like this:

lots of baggy clothes, especially baggy jackets and shirts. they like loose fitting high waisted pants like JNCO jeans, cargo pants, etc but they arent averse to pencil legs. they rarely ever wear skinny jeans or drainpipes though. messy hair is a lifestyle for them- their haircut is definitely home-done

you know how in BICSTLY they used to have really long hair before they cut it? in a modern au i can see them impulsively doing the cut at like 3am and waking milo up at his door cause they screwed it up and he ends up having to help fix it (even though hes literally no better at cutting hair than them. worse even)

definitely have an undercut bob- bob on top, shaven on the bottom layer. they might end up growing their hair into a mullet at some point if they get bored. probably dyes their hair all the time out of boredom and then regrets it later and has to use dye remover.

lots of ripped tights and fishnets, leggings with big loose crop tops, big hoodies, safety pin jewelry and homemade jewelry. maybe some sticknpokes.

all that said, they still know how to dress in a professional situation. since its a modern au theres really nothing holding them back from the education and career they canonically want but cant get in the 1910s, so i imagine they would work at the smithsonian as well, maybe their father helped them get the job? potentially in that case they might be his assistant- after all, he trusts their opinion on artifacts more than anyone else's.

at work you can still very much see the punk/skater/grunge/goth style but its more understated- turtlenecks, high waisted and looser dress pants, lots of black, slightly unbuttoned collared shirts with a loose overcoat and no tie

since i elaborated on milos shoe taste i may as well elaborate on red's: they definitely wear converse as well, probably newer than milo's since their father is fairly wealthy and they can afford it. they also have a doc martens collection. they have a pair of demonias but they never wear them and milo is really the only person to even know they own them, let alone see them in them. they really dont like to wear heels much, but they own a few just to play around with. they have a bad habit of wearing any laced shoes untied, but they never trip over the laces. they also use lace code- their most-worn Docs have purple laces on the right foot and yellow on the left. some of their Docs have (reclaimed) pink laces.

has an extensive pin collection including feminism pins, anti-racism pins, punk-related pins, skater-related pins, and pop culture pins (80s music, modern music, old movies, etc)

MUSIC TASTE

milo's into a lot of older music- stuff from the 50s is his favorite. really into jazz and ballroom style stuff. his favorite band is queen, i think- he likes the old-fashioned sound, the jazz-chamber-ballroom influences, the diversity of their lyrics, and the complexity between the guitar riffs, the basslines, and freddie's vocal runs as well as the vocal harmonies.

sometimes he hums good old fashioned lover boy to red and they two-step in the living room in their pajamas :pleading:

also very into rush. yes, he is a rush guy :pensive:.

also listens to a surprising amount of lo-fi? he really likes stuff that remixes older music with hip hop and lofi elements, like earl grey. nearly exclusively into instrumental stuff but also very into louie zong. he listens to it while he works a lot.

knows a lotttt of foreign artists, especially niche ones. fuckin LOVES casiopea

red's spotify is a goddamn mess. everything from 2000s emo, to classic 70s punk, to post-punk and new wave, to 90s pop, to rap. they cant be easily classified at all

their favorite bands are oingo boingo, prince, queen (they listen to a lot of their harder-rock music, but milo knows theyre into the ballads too. theyll never tell anyone else though), doja cat, lil nas, fall out boy, and billie eilish.

red recites the intro monologue to lets go crazy very seriously to make milo laugh, sometimes. they get very into it with their facial expressions. sometimes it devolves into a full air guitar/keyboard/drum and wild dancing session. milo does not know how to participate in this but he loves watching them have fun with it. sometimes they pull him off the couch to make him dance with them, though

they are a huge sucker for dark pop, vaporwave, retrowave, EDM, hip hop, emo, punk... etc etc. anything that combines any two or more of those genres in an original or interesting way gets their attention right away

there's a lot of sharing between the two of them- even though their music tastes are so different, they like a lot of the others taste, and theyre always up to listen to whatever their partner is playing.

red is a huge softie, and milo has found them more than once listening to or humming something he was playing for them the other day because it reminded them of him

speaking of which- in the 1914 canon, red can play piano. i think that carries over to a modern au, where they could play piano and by extension keyboard. i like to think they experiment with a lot of instruments but i doubt they ever really mastered any others. maybe theyre okay at drums or bass?

they learned to play and sing teo torriatte for milo, as a surprise. when they first performed it for them, they had everything set up for when he got home from work- the lights were dimmed, they had candles lit around the keyboard, they draped stuff in cloth to make it look pretty, they scattered flower petals around. when milo walked in and saw it all, he almost proposed then and there- the only thing that stopped him was that he would kick himself for the rest of his life if he did that without a ring.

HOBBIES/ACTIVITIES

milo is still an avid chess player in this, but i like to think hes in some kind of groupchat or text or discord server for it. he doesnt necessarily consider any of the others in the chat close friends, but he does know them all by name

he tries to get red into chess but they never really get it

he tells them all about the stuff that goes down in the games and they just. do not understand. but they love listening to him get excited about it anyway

"red you're not gonna BELIEVE this, eddie played an italian game on star today! i thought for sure she would see through it since everyone knows it but she slipped and he beat her in like, 13 moves! i wouldnt have believed it if i hadnt been there!"

red is a skater and a regular at the skate park by the smithsonian

most regulars there know them by name, they can spot a newbie a mile away

they have a sticker of a broken tv with a skull inside of it on the underside of their board, its become recognized as a symbol of them unofficially

since theyre so regular and have been going there a lot longer than most of the other skaters that frequent the place, a lot of what they say is kind of just accepted as the rules

they have a bad habit of lecturing new kids who show up without knee/elbow pads or helmets at the very least. all the other skaters enforce it too. kids dont end up showing up without protective gear very often after their first visit

they brought a first aid kid and left it there and everyone has kept it stocked pretty well without them having to have much input. its kind of just a communal first aid kit

they once drew the broken tv symbol on the inside of a half-pipe and everyone started calling it red's ramp after that

they also started calling the bowl at the center of the park the Soup Bowl and now thats just accepted as the name. some of the newer kids genuinely thought that it was called that by the park and were shocked when they found out it was just a random nickname red gave it one day

theyve brought milo a few times but hes extremely awkward on his feet and could never really get his balance on a skateboard, and quite frankly red is afraid of what might happen if he tried even a low ramp, so he usually just sits at the rim of the bowl while red skates around

everyone knew he was their boyfriend before they even met him. a few of the regulars called him by name right away. one of them was certain red had brought him before.

but no

they just talk so fuckin much about him that its like they already know him

aside from skateboarding, red is pretty good on rollerskates/blades

they tried to take milo to a roller rink once but it was a disaster and they ended up going home, changing into pajamas, ordering chinese food, and marathoning movies till they fell asleep on the couch together. so not a total loss

theyre both very into movies. red is deep into horror and milo likes indie/art movies and just Cannot handle horror at all, but they both agree on old movies, from the 80s and 90s to like the 30s.

red has shown milo some of the classic horror movies and the niche old ones (from like the 40s) since theyre not difficult to stomach

every so often when red brings up wanting to see a horror movie milo is like "aw babe we can watch that tonight i promise it wont be bad" and he genuinely thinks he can handle it this time

it is always a lie

red ends up holding him every time and talking him to sleep, but it thankfully never causes like a major panic attack or anything like that

they love going to museums together, of all kinds. they love art museums. they also go to aquariums and aviaries

sometimes they like to go to other history museums and criticise the veracity or accuracy of exhibits/translations, all in good fun of course. theyre never actually being mean about it

SIDENOTES/UNCATEGORIZED

they both used to work at starbucks, when they were younger and before they worked at the smithsonian. they worked at separate stores 2 blocks from each other.

milo cant stand soda or carbonated drinks, red can and will chug a java monster in order to survive a long workday if they must. milo is constantly concerned for their health and wellbeing

they r both lightweights when it comes to drinking. they can split a six pack and both be falling-over drunk by the end of the night.

given the changes in beauty standards people DEFINITELY think milo is more attractive than they would in 1914. cmon. hes a lil twinky nerd. you think people wont eat that up?

he never really catches onto the flirting much though

they exchange discord names in the replies of the tweet and tell the guy not to interrupt them while theyre talking in his replies

i like to think red and milo are selected to go on an academic visit to atl/antis (to learn about the culture, with permission of the king), and audrey ends up as the mechanic on the ship during the visit and theyre like (spiderman pointing meme) at each other

red and audrey have so many inside jokes that they basically speak a different language. milo gets some of the terms from context and pop culture (they use "so very" in real life- as in "wow, that shirt is so very.") but he is hopeless to learn all of it

one of their inside jokes is any variation of "milo hot girl summer" and they REFUSE to explain it to him no matter how much he begs

milo wears that iconique tank top on the ship and they say it literally any time he bends over, picks anything up, reaches for anything, moves, BREATHES. he is bewildered and at this point concerned

(in truth, the joke came from red taking a really blurry picture of him in a short sleeve shirt where he looked pretty cute and captioned it "milo's having a hot girl summer rn" and they just could not stop repeating it once audrey met him IRL)

they have a minecraft world. i do like to believe that every so often vinny finds a way in- theyre never sure how- and griefs the shit out of them by blowing up EVERY. monument.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Eighty-Three: Mining ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: Best Years of Your Life ] [ AO3 Link ]

It’s fast becoming an after school tradition. As soon as he gets home from classes, Sasuke makes his way up to his room and powers up his PC, saving his homework for as late in the evening as he dares. Even his mother has noticed his change in behavior, staring with a puzzled expression up the stairs whenever he goes flying by.

A few months ago, Sasuke wouldn’t be caught dead playing a game as old and ‘childish’ as Minecraft. But the game’s resurgence in popularity means it’s no longer that niche piece of nostalgia that only some people refused to stop playing. Now, it’s once again something acceptable in social spaces. And Sasuke has joined a server put on by someone at his school.

So far, no one is aware of who he is. Well...except one person. While beginning his base back when the server first launched, he found himself approached by another player, who left a simple sign saying, “Hinata was here”. He found out the next day that Hinata was a friend of a friend of a friend, hence the name ringing a distant bell. A few questions later while logged on, and they’d both pretty much figured out who the other was.

But otherwise? Sasuke acts none the wiser regarding the game at school. Naruto is still adamant it’s a kid game. Sakura isn’t one to play games in the first place. But any time he and Hinata cross paths, there’s a brief exchanged look with a smile.

She ended up building a base not far from his own, promising to teach him - as a diehard fan who carried on during the dry spell - everything he’d missed during his years off from the game.

“What even is the point of this stuff?” he complains over Discord one evening, nose wrinkling as he has to mine through yet another vein of diorite. “It looks like bird poop.”

In their voice chat, Hinata can’t help a soft laugh. “Honestly, I don’t know. Most people don’t really like the new stones. I guess they were going for variety…? But...I think they’re all pretty ugly…”

“They’re obnoxious. Keep taking slots in my inventory! I’m trying to go mining for diamonds, not...this crap.”

“Just t-toss it in some lava next time you find some.”

Sasuke grumbles into his mic, carrying on silently for a while before asking, “...what’s the level for diamonds?”

“...eleven, I think? That’s where I go, anyway. It might be a block up or down, but that works pretty well. Going strip mining?”

“I found a pretty good cave, but...ugh, I might as well. I need some better gear!”

“At least we’re far out enough it should be untouched. I bet spawn is already completely dug up.”

“Well, I’ll report back if I find anything,” he sighs. “...what about you? Up to anything interesting?”

“I found a jungle temple!”

“Oh yeah? I...think those were a thing last time I played. Anything cool in it?”

“I’m trying to do the puzzle by hand rather than just...mining into it.”

“I’m not patient enough for that stuff.”

“Remind me to never have you play a puzzle map with me,” she laughs.

“If I want to have to think about stuff, I’d rather just do my homework.”

Hinata bursts into more giggles, and Sasuke can’t help but grin to himself.

There’s some radio silence for a time, and then Hinata gasps.

“Huh? What?”

“I found pandas!”

“Whoa, really?”

“Yeah! Aww, one’s rolling around on its back, that’s so cute!”

“Man, I wanna see!”

“I’ll try to bring one home! It’s actually not too far, I think I can get one in a boat...I’ll have to make a pen…”

“You can just...have a pet panda?”

“Well sure! I mean...you don’t tame it or anything, but you can have them around.”

“Oh...so like a cow or something.”

“Mhm.”

“Well, you get that panda, and I’ll get us some diamonds.”

“You’re gonna…? You’re gonna split your diamonds with me?”

“Well sure, why not?”

“...are we teaming up?”

“...I guess so. Is that bad?”

“No, that’s fine! I just...w-wasn’t expecting it.”

“Why not? We’re neighbors, aren’t we?”

“...I guess so.”

“What’s with the hesitation?”

“Nothing! Nevermind. I’ll go help you mine next time. For now, I’m panda wrangling.”

For a moment he considers asking her again, but...well, she’s avoiding it for a reason. Did he...do something wrong? Well, there’s no real way to know unless she fesses up, so...in the meantime, he goes back to his mining.

By the time it’s late evening, he’s actually found a few veins of the gems, coming back up triumphantly to the surface. “I got thirteen!”

“Nice! Look, I got the panda in a pen!”

Not far from his jungle treehouse is indeed a junglewood pen, complete with a little house with leaves for the roof. A panda sits upright munching on bamboo.

“...dude…”

“What?”

“...I think that’s my new favorite mob.”

“Right? They’re so cute! This is just a normal one, but they come in different personalities! I’ll try to get more to spawn tomorrow. For now I need to get my homework done…”

“Yeah, me too. Here, before you go though…” He gives her six of his diamonds. “You can make a pick and a sword!”

“Oh...thanks.”

“...do you not want them?”

“No! No, I appreciate it. I just didn’t think you’d, um...want to give them to me.”

“I mean, yeah...we’re friends, aren’t we?”

“...I dunno...are we?”

Sasuke blinks at his screen. “...we’ve been playing this after school almost every day for a week. Does that not make us friends?”

“Well...on here, sure. But…”

...but what, he has to wonder.

“...I mean...we haven’t really t-talked outside of here...have we?”

“I’m talking to you right now.”

“I mean in p-person! At school! When we’re there, it’s like we’re strangers…”

So that’s what this is about? “I...wasn’t sure if you wanted me to!”

“Well...neither did I!”

“I’d be cool with it!”

“...you would?”

“Yeah! Why not?”

“Well, because I...I’m not…”

“Not what?”

“...cool…”

After a pregnant pause, Sasuke can’t help a laugh. “And, what? You think I am? Or that I’m like, the...the cool police?”

“Well...Naruto thinks I’m...weird.”

“Yeah, well...Naruto’s an idiot.”

“...I had a really big c-crush on him when we were little, and...I think he’s still kinda...w-weirded out by me. I didn’t...w-want to make things awkward. I mean, you guys are best friends, and -”

“My friends don’t dictate who else I can be friends with. You’re not weird, Hinata. You have interests that are maybe a little atypical, but that’s not weird, that’s just...being a person. If you wanna talk at school and hang out or whatever, just...do it! Like I said, we’re friends. Doesn’t matter if we really met through a game, we still talk and communicate and, like...know each other. It doesn’t have to be different in person if you don’t want it to be. I just...since the server started as anonymous, I wasn’t sure if I should say anything.”

For a long moment, Hinata is quiet...but Sasuke waits patiently, knowing she likes to think over her words.

“...o-okay…”

“Okay?”

“Yeah, I...I’m okay. Um...I’ll...talk to you tomorrow. I need to...do my homework.”

“...all right. If you don’t come talk to me tomorrow, I’ll go find you instead.”

She manages a small laugh at that. “...okay.”

“Good. Good luck with your work.”

“Yeah, you too. Goodnight.”

“...night.” He watches Discord as she leaves the channel, and then heaves a small sigh, mic muted. He had no idea she wanted to bridge things from in the game into stuff at school...he figured most would want to keep that separate. And how could he know unless she said something?

He’s really enjoyed getting to know her over the course of the past week. She’s easy to talk to, really charming in her own way, and has proved to be really interesting. It makes him sad he never really talked to her before.

...they’re definitely friends. At least, in his eyes. Still...he can’t help but wonder about her history with Naruto. He has called her strange whenever Sasuke brings her up. Is he really so hung up over that? That was forever ago! And if anything, he’s constant pining over Sakura is just as weird, right? Like he has any room to talk.

Powering off his PC, Sasuke leans back in his chair, thoughts a bit jumbled. Well...for now, nothing left to do but finish his coursework. Tomorrow, he can hang out with Hinata.

And if Naruto says anything stupid (and, let’s face it...of course he will), then Sasuke will just tell him to piss off. Simple as that. Of course...he’s a bit more blunt than Hinata with her soft-spoken manners.

...she’d be wasted on someone like Naruto.

...where’d that thought come from?

Shoving it aside, Sasuke pulls out his calculus textbook, willing himself to think about something else for a while.

Background

Set after the canon events of BATIM, Bendy barely escapes Joey Drew Studio with his life. He stumbles onto this place called Toon-Town, where all cartoons from the ages can choose to dwell. Needing to recover from what transpired in that acrid, festering place he bides his time in the shadows, lurking around, observing these strange creatures that reside here. He gleans that these beings, while similar in appearance, are quite different from him.

He’s an ink god, a demon, summoned in the form of a cute and cuddly cartoon character. These other creatures ARE cartoons. Not only that but they’re all so…good!

Bendy tries to assimilate, but it’s clear to him that his morals don’t quite align with the systems put in place here. He needs to create his own niche, on the fringe, a haven of sin where he can cut loose and feed his whims. Of course the best thing to do is make a nightclub! Drunk people dancing the night away, being led into promiscuity and temptation. It’s perfect!

Bendy shouldn’t be there though. He doesn’t belong. He’s a powerful demonic spirit and his demonic influence has started to bleed into the veins of this wholesome place and spread like a pandemic. A hideous monster has clutched its talons around a pure entity, and unwittingly strangling the goodness out of it. What will become of Toon Town if this spreading disease is left unchecked?

Devil’s Roost –

Open from 6.am till 6.66pm! It’s in an old abandoned warehouse on the banks of the canals outside of the 1920’s district. It’s somewhat of a public secret that he’s in there illegally, but the authorities would rather have him preoccupied than being a ne’er-do-well about town. The building itself is dilapidated, but he’s done what he can to fix it up.

Inside there’s a large dance floor, 2 bars, and cages for his attractive employees to dance in. Toon Town has never seen such a place! The staff are all nocturnal creatures who are grateful for this, as it’s the only business of its kind, and so the only place they can work.

Toon Town-

Its split into districts and eras. 1920’s for the silent cartoons, with some crossover of the 30’s black and white. There’s no problem with crossing eras and you might find a 90’s cartoon wander into the 20’s district to go shopping or sightseeing, and vice versa (although the newer districts tend to intimidate the older toons). Humans sometimes venture into there for the same reasons, but it isn’t very common. Toon town can be a dangerous and frightening place. Especially now there’s rumours of a monster corrupting the place.

My head canon is Bendy as a total cockwomble. More or less an unchecked seven deadly sins with none of the virtues, he’s a selfish egomaniac, drunk with power and a lot of whisky. He’s a completely self-indulgent hedonist, only interested in satisfying his desires in whatever means it takes to get that done.

However…acting like that isolated him at first and he found himself rather lonely. The need for companionship and the desire to be worshipped by all has forced him to try and change his methods slightly. It’s all for the bigger picture of satisfying a selfish need. He wants friends to like him and worship him. If being a bit nicer and more in controlled with get that done, well….sacrifice is the name of the game after all!

He doesn’t realise that his mere presence is poisoning Toon Town wicth his demonic aura…yet.

GROWTH & GRATITUDE

When Heavensward launched I was in a pretty awkward point in-game. I wasn’t entirely too invested in XIV or in MMO’s in general. The group I played with was a mix of old-school MMO WoW veterans and die-hard FF fans. I wasn’t exactly mechanic savvy nor too enthralled in the lore behind this game. I was put in a weird spot, to say the least. I couldn’t help but feel out of place with both the friends I had and the giant community sprawled out before me. It took...countless fucking hours of throwing my head against content, seeking guidance from other players, and fighting against my own ignorance to get comfortable playing this game. Around that time, I had also stumbled across the XIV community here on Tumblr through a friend. Our community is a vast fucking place and I felt extremely overwhelmed at first. Like, I can barely interact with people in-game as it is, man. I had no clue how things worked on this end. However, one thing I was quickly able to latch onto were screenshot edits. I’d had....many...many years of experience with this concept back when I was roleplaying (on Myspace of all things). It was after this little rediscovery that I found my niche here and the rest of it is pretty self-explanatory. Fast forward two(ish) years later and things have changed. I love this damn game guys, I really do. Being able to experience new content, striving to improve both job and player skill is such a damn thrill for me. I’m confident in what I can offer as a player and I’m constantly excited for new opportunities to grow.

As for this blog, oh man...I never in a million years expected this to be where it’s at today. I really just used this blog to selfishly post screenshots and fuck man....the response has just been so overwhelmingly wonderful.

Look, I’ve never been particularly good at expressing my feelings, ESPECIALLY not through writing. Things come a bit more naturally through speech but most of the time? I keep to myself outside of my small circles and even then I tend to internalize my anxieties onto myself. It’s tough conveying my thoughts into words since my mind tends to race around. However, despite these difficulties, one thing that’s always come naturally to me is the ability to express gratitude. I am so damn thankful to those of you who have had a hand in helping me grow both as a player and as a member of this community. So before we trudge off into expansion, I wanted to draft something up to commemorate the time I’ve spent with each of you:

What have you liked and disliked the most about your current program/degree?

Hmmmm

That's a tough one. I definitely have some likes and dislikes so far, but then again, my experiences have also been heavily shaped by the pandemic and starting my program in the middle of it. I've literally never been to campus or met my advisor outside of a video call. Hell, the last time I was in Maryland was probably when I was like 12. So it's been a minute.

Some likes:

The interdisciplinarity: they really push this idea of working across disciplines and areas of specialization, which I appreciate. My background is very much not in research. I have a BA in literature and a MS in library and info science. And now I'm a social sciences researcher in a STEM degree. But I'm able to pull in theory from other disciplines (like media studies or gender studies) and kind of do my own thing

My advisor: she's really awesome and has been a great guide this year, though I have learned that I need to have more contact with her to really feel comfortable and to succeed. She's a fairly hands-off kind of advisor by default, but I'm working to figure out what style works best for me (which seems to be having somewhat regular one-on-one meetings to discuss progress and keep me on track). Everyone says you need to prioritize advisor choice pretty highly (or even make it your top priority) when picking a PhD program, and honestly? They're right. My advisor is awesome and genuinely cares about her students, which is more than I can say for some of the people I've known in PhD programs.

My cohort: am I best buddies with everyone? No, of course not. There's 20 of us. A good portion of them are 10+ years older than me, so that left me feeling super out of place and impostor-y especially near the beginning of the program. But I've found my niche. There are seven or eight of them that I tend to talk to quite a bit and a few more I'm friendly with and some that I don't really talk to outside of class. But we've got a Discord server, and I've somehow like become one of the nodes of the group?? Like I am not at all an extrovert and will gladly not interact with any humans at all for sometimes days at a time. But I feel like a lot of people reach out to me and a few of them have made comments to me about being excited about me moving to Maryland soon and y'all, I'm really glad I have these people 💜

Some dislikes:

Online classes: okay, so not really the university's fault, BUT some of them are asynchronous on top of being online?? (Meaning that all the lectures are recorded and you do it all on your own) So I feel like it's not really that different from teaching myself using YouTube. And lbr, I definitely used YouTube as a major resource in my asynchronous online statistics course. If I was paying tuition, I'd probably be pretty angry about it because it just feels like a lower quality of learning honestly. Also, I have ADHD, so even when I'm in a synchronous online class, my brain (and mouse) will wander after a point.

Their whole online system honestly: I did not know how spoiled I was by my two previous universities until I started at Maryland and found out that I can't access my own class schedule online except during specific hours??? Like what?? Also, for their course catalog where the schedule of classes is, if a class is online, it doesn't list a date or time for that class. An in-person class says "Monday 2-3:45" or whatever, but online classes just say that times and dates are on the elearning platform. But you can't see the time and date of a class unless you're registered for that class, added to the class on the elearning platform, and the instructor has posted that information there. Like I did not know that my summer class was entirely asynchronous until literally the day the semester started. It's madness

Honestly not knowing what my field is: there's a blessing and a curse to being in information science/studies. On the one hand, you can make the argument that basically anything counts as info sci/studies. On the other hand, you can make the argument that basically anything counts as info sci/studies. So no one can actually really define what it is we do, and no one knows where the boundaries are--just that they probably exist somewhere. Like, I study fanfiction, right? Fans and information behavior and all kinds of nerdy fandom goodness. And then one of my classmates works in AI ethics. Someone else is doing something with Wikipedia, citizen science, and lakes (which is honestly fascinating). Another does something to do with content moderation and social media videos and misinformation? Honestly, I know it's a thing, but I don't understand a lot of it. But we're all doing wildly different things and somehow getting the same degree. So they lump us all together under one degree that no one really understands, and we're all just like "oh that sounds cool. I have no idea what it means." every time someone talks about their project.

Big Data, A.I., And The Future Of "Hate Speech"

Big Data has been an incredibly useful tool for businesses and consumers alike, as it helps businesses understand their consumers better and allows them to have much more detailed information regarding the consumer market. However, big data has the possibility to control our lives; and that possibility should not be ignored.

“Hate speech” is still a somewhat hot topic, but this article is not about “hate speech” in the sense of what a private individual defines it, it is strictly about how the nation states themselves define it and what sorts of actions they take against it. Let us take a look at the Europe's hate speech laws and its history. Countries such as Latvia and South Africa also take action against “Hate Speech”. The fangs of “Hate Speech” entangles politicians and activists and even comedians. Geert Wilders has been in court because of his opinions on Moroccans, several members of Britain First have been imprisoned, and comedian Count Dankula has been convicted of teaching a dog to mock Nazis.

Several nation states have already started to act on their (new and old) hate speech laws. As time moves on, so will the inactive shock and passive rebellion diminish, leading to further implementations, actions and normalizations of these hate speech laws.

How does “Big Data” come into this? Keyword Analytics and Data Mining. Keyword Analytics is mostly the reason why those annoying Amazon suggestions come up whenever you do a Google search on a book or any particular item that can be bought from an online market, the way it works is that you generally buy keywords in that allows your website to be on the top whenever your bought keyword is used by someone else. Data Mining is starting to transform into the Nuclear Arms race of the Internet for several reasons, one of them being profit. More information about your customers means that you can further optimize your business to fit customer needs. A certain amount of data might be the difference between a successful business and an unsuccessful one. The means of getting a hold on this data might be a difficult path. Luckily for them, there are various social media websites and applications that have loads of data that are willing to sell for profit; one of them being Facebook, of course. This means that whatever you post on Facebook and various other websites and apps can be sold or given to various buyers that need this information. Standard business procedure, right?

Not all business agreements is between “company to company” and not all business agreements are “for profit”. Facebook’s data mining scandal gave us another reminder that Big Business looks at your info from a utilitarian standpoint rather than a humanistic standpoint, not a surprising fact, but an important fact to consider lest we forget again. Seeing as how our information and data is more of a resource than property that should never under ethical standards be transgressed on, we should consider possibilities and actualities that can change our lives. Out of many realities, one of them may be our “hateful” speech being limited. James O’Keefe’s journalistic piece on Twitter’s attittude towards “Pro-Trump and Conservative opinions” showcases this reality occuring right now.

Private businesses, groups and companies trade information for profit. So what about this is scary?

One interesting part of that video is that one of the engineers claim that the US government pressures Twitter to ban certain celebrities such as Julian Assange. Discord is a growing social messaging app/social media platform that is also “fighting hate speech”, and while it is relatively small at the current moment compared to other platforms, it is growing at a really fast pace, and it is also becoming one of the top social media platforms to use when it comes to politics as there are countless political Discord servers filled with hundreds (sometimes even thousands) of people. To recap, private businesses, groups and companies trade information for profit. So what about this is scary?

In short, a lot. One question is “who is buying the information?”, a basic simple answer would be “other companies looking for more information on potential customers to see what they like and want”. That’s not the only correct answer, what if businesses like Discord partnered with groups like SPLC and various other anti-free speech organizations? Oh wait, they already do. But what about their ToS? Isn’t there anything that blocks them from doing such a thing?

An exhortation to always read the small print if ever I saw one. Let us return now to the journalistic work from James O’Keefe and the part where one of the engineers talk about how they are pressured by the US government themselves. Today’s governments, for whatever reason, does not like dissenting opinions at all, of course saying that openly would be a death sentence, so they hide their intentions under the guise of “Hate Speech”.

Another facet of Big Data and AI in “combatting Hate Speech” are algorithms and machine learning. For people that are unfamiliar with “machine learning”, it is, in basic terms, the computer literally teaching itself what its supposed to do. Four months ago ADL released a video about their new tool to fight “Online Hate”, ADL claims that the learning model is “78%-85% accurate”. That is not a unlikely result.

As Europeans keeps on scratching their heads wondering what they should do, the poison disguised as an antidote is already being used in the USA. Antifa uses “in your face” street violence techniques whilst SPLC and ADL uses more legalistic methods. This double whammy has been successful at pacifying “wrongthink” for a very long time. The modern European mindset is a bit different from the modern American mindset; the American mindset loves to treasure their freedoms and rights, whilst Europeans really don’t put much emphasis on that in their lifestyles. This difference might enable European nation states to fight “Online Hate” using the US’ methods. The damage that European nation states can deal will be much higher than US since European nations have more legalistic ground to fight “hate speech”.

One of the primary methods that I often talk about is the aforementioned “Keyword Analytics”. As we all know either by experience or knowledge, each group has their own niche language and inside jokes. It's a key aspect of friendships in human nature, the ability to find things amusing to which outsiders are not privy. This has visibly developed in the online realms, where Alt-Righters and far-righters have a very specific Imageboard style language-culture that is not that difficult to get a feel of for an average “Correct The Record” worker. If you, as a leader of a group or even as a nation state wanted to detect the persons and identities responsible for wrongthink, all you need to do is to use several algorithms that an engineer can easily manage to create, keywords, and then you will be able to detect tons of people that commit the horrid crime of wrongthink and “hate speech”. Nation states also have the ability to request data from companies such as Google, and they are more than happy to share information, especially if its really needed. AI and Big Data still has a lot of ground to cover; but it will cover it.

The future for online political discourse might be grim if Western governments play their cards right.
