"In Sacramento, California, an estimated 6,615 people are experiencing homelessness, a number that — while still heartbreakingly high — has declined 29% since 2023, according to the latest Point In Time counts. 

But a new project, which has been in the works since 2022, might bring that number down even lower.

A new 13-acre property purchased by Sacramento County will soon be home to the Watt Service Center and Safe Stay. 

The county broke ground on the mixed-use service center this week, which will provide shelter, emergency respite, safe parking, health services, and more to community members who are unsheltered — meaning they don’t have a place to safely sleep at night.

“We wanted to do something that is not only larger, but a large-scale campus to provide more than just the shelter,” Janna Haynes, of the county’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing, told KCRA3 News.

The Watt Service Center will have amenities to help meet the needs of anyone staying there, including bathrooms, showers, laundry, and food, as well as mental health, treatment, and employment services.

“You can also meet with your case manager, get behavior health services, look for a job, get rehousing services, a place for your dog,” Jaynes added. “It’s really everything you need, not only for your day-to-day life, but to hopefully end your homelessness.”

While the center is a costly offering, the city explained that it is ultimately less expensive than allowing the homelessness crisis to go unmitigated.

The land was purchased for $22 million and will cost an estimated $42 million to construct the center. According to ABC10 News it will be mostly funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.

While the center will have the capacity to host 225 beds in Safe Stay cabins, 50-person capacity in Safe Parking, and 75-person capacity for emergency/weather respite beds, it will serve countless others outside of the 350 total people it can house at any given time.

According to a press release from the county, “conservative estimates” have found that over the course of 15 years, the center will serve 18,000 people.

In 2017, the city found that the average cost for an “unsheltered individual” was about $45,000 a year, considering public systems like county jail, shelters, behavioral health, and more.

With the projected impact of the shelter, that cost lowers to less than $3,600 per person.

“If you break down the funding, it’s actually not that expensive,” Rich Desmond, county supervisor for District 3, told ABC10.

“It’s a heck of a lot cheaper than letting someone stay out in the community, unsheltered where they are extremely expensive in terms of the emergency response from fire, our emergency rooms, our law enforcement response.”

Providing what the county calls “wraparound services” not only brings down costs but truly helps people meet their basic needs.

“The really great thing about this site in particular, that we don't have at any other shelters, is the sheer size and the ability to really wrap everything people need,” Emily Halcon, director of the Department of Homeless Services and Housing with Sacramento County, told ABC10. 

One notable feature is the center’s Safe Parking spaces, which are the first of their kind in the city. People living in their cars will now have a safe place to park, monitored by security.

“We know a lot of people who are unsheltered actually are living out of their cars,” Desmond said, “maybe a family that’s barely hanging on but they still need that vital transportation to get their kids to school or get to work.”

This support is especially helpful for those who are newly homeless, Halcon added, building on the amenities provided in the county’s two other “safe stay” facilities. 

While Sacramento County just broke ground on the Watt Service Center, officials say they hope to begin moving people into the facility in January 2026.

“Our staff is putting in extra time and attention to this campus, ensuring that it houses everything we need to end homelessness for people,” Desmond said in a statement.

Once it’s up and running, Jaynes told KCRA3, they plan to onboard formerly unhoused community members as part of the staff at the facility.

“When you have a conversation with someone who understands where you’ve been, and you see the success they’re having now,” Jaynes said, “it really does give you hope something could be different.”

On the Grounds Where We Feel Safe

When Tim gets a letter claiming to hold his soulmate, who he's never met, hostage, he's skeptical. It turns out pretty great though. Now if he can just make sure not to make a fool of himself.

We have your soulmate , the letter claimed. It seemed ludicrous. Tim hadn’t even met his soulmate yet, and it wasn’t like Red Robin’s mark had ever been exposed. There was no way some D-list villain could have found whoever it was. Really, he should only be going to this for the chance to catch the annoying asshole.

It just seemed like a weird lie, was the thing. If they just wanted to lure him out, there had to be more believable options. Claiming to have captured one of the other members of Young Justice or another bat would have made the most sense. His teammates went no-contact for various reasons all the time, so it’s not like he could double-check.

But no. They had his soulmate, apparently. It just seemed inane.

They were more competent than expected. Tim snuck into the facility with the ease of long practice, but they must have had magic wards because he tripped some kind of alarm barely a few minutes in. He would have noticed a technological system, but his abilities with magic were more limited, like most bats. In the immortal words of Jason Todd, ‘Just set it on fire and call Zatanna if that doesn’t work.’

Tim was eighty percent sure Jason was the only bat with any real degree of familiarity with magic, but that was neither here nor there. It just made the advice more accurate.

It was kicking his ass now though. Usually he’d be doing this with a team, hopefully with at least one person who could have noticed wards, but he had drastically underestimated the size and threat of this operation.

Generic security guards dragged him through the halls, and he did his best to memorize the layout. He’d taken out the first few thugs, but frankly, he was only human, and he needed to save his energy for something more useful. In the meantime, he pressed the only emergency beacon he had that would eventually worm through the wards to call his family and examined the halls they were dragging him through. The atrocious minimalism and poor layout design were making it irritatingly difficult to keep them straight in his head.

There were four villains in the room he was brought to, three more than he was expecting. One wore a thick cloak she’d probably bought off Etsy and a cheap Eye of Horus necklace, and Tim instantly pegged her as responsible for his magic problems.

“Woooow. You assholes know how to make a Robin feel loved. What’s the occasion? Is it Christmas? You shouldn’t have.” Tim bared his teeth in a smile that had his guards leaning away from him. If he could just get them talking, this would be a lot easier.

One, the leader, threw back her head and cackled. “What’s the occasion? What’s the occasion? Didn’t you read our note? Meeting your soulmate is the chance of a lifetime! We're doing you a favor, don’t you think?” She grinned down at him. He tilted his head, bird-like.

“You know, I’m pretty sure I could swing a better meeting than this. Get some candles, jazz up the place a little bit. Your interior decorating is kind of shit.” Tim channeled the robin spirit of his predecessors and took a shot at annoying them. Instead, the woman’s demented grin grew wider.

“But your blood will look so pretty on the floors! Do you think we’ll kill him or you first? I can’t decide!” Her teeth had red in them, Tim noticed. She turned to the guards at the door. “Bring him in!”

Fuck. So they did have a hostage. Probably some poor civilian who’d got dragged into these assholes' lark and was going to need years of therapy after this. Fuck his life.

A few tense minutes later the guards walked back in carrying a black teenager maybe a little taller than Tim between them. He was struggling, doing his level best to kick at their ankles and jab at their kidneys, but the mercs didn’t even shift. Tim was grateful the hostage was a fighter at least, that could make it easier to evacuate him.

The lead villain strolled over to the civilian. Honestly, Tim wasn’t sure why the rest were here. They practically faded into the walls. She seized the boy’s chin and he tried to spit at her. She laughed. “Our little witch spent months divining for this! Ready?” She cackled and dragged his face over to meet Tim’s eyes. They both froze.

His eyes were green, Tim noticed, and lined thickly in black, like kohl. They dug into Tim's chest like his heart was moving to make room for another, two hearts beating as one. Everything felt more vibrant and alive. Tim couldn’t breathe.

The leader was still laughing, he noticed distantly. She had slumped back against the wall to keep from falling over, and her entire body shook with contortions. Her eyes were bright with bloodlust.

Tim was fucked. He was so completely fucked. Not only because this guy was stupid pretty and he could practically feel his higher brain functions turning off, leaving him a steaming pile of bisexual goo, but because his soulmate was barely five feet from a villain who practically dripped insanity, and he still had thirty seconds to go before he got his hands untied. Absolutely, completely, and totally fucked.

The other boy had stilled when their eyes met, but he tensed again as one of the other villains stalked towards him.

“I knew it,” the man snarled. “I knew it. I wonder, if I hurt you, will Red Robin bleed?”

The boy's eyes widened before hardening. Tim desperately hoped he didn’t do anything stupid. His call signal still needed more time to get through to his family. 

“Don’t damage him just yet!” the leader called out. “Start with his fingers and toes, we want this to last .” Her grin was alarmingly demented.

The other boy finally had enough. “Yeah, let’s not.” He kicked out at the ankle of the guard holding onto him, causing the man to release him. At the same time, Tim made his move. Fuck, civilians with no sense of self-preservation were the bane of any vigilante, but it being his soulmate was somehow worse. If he could just get over there in time—

A rush of sand curled up around the boy, as if from nowhere, and launched the villain near him into a wall. His eyes glowed golden, and his stance indicated some training. Not a civilian, then. 

Tim kept moving. He dumped half a dozen taser bugs on anyone in reach, leaving them keeled over on the ground, and darted forward. The guards had left the door open when they brought the other boy in. Tim grabbed him and launched out the door, practically carrying him, while the boy did something over his shoulder to hold off pursuers. The way out was blocked, but the facility was huge. They eventually managed to lose the villains, tucked up in some kind of meat locker. They curled up against the walls, catching their breath.

“You know, this was not how I expected our first meeting to go,” the other boy said.

Tim laughed, “I’ll be honest, with my luck this isn’t really a surprise.” The other boy snorted. He was beautiful when he laughed. It was an ugly sort of giggle, the kind the media would mock a person for, the kind his parents trained out of him as their heir, but it lit up his face in a way that made Tim stare. He belatedly remembered to introduce himself. “Red Robin.”

“From Gotham, right? Call me Pharaoh.”

Tim squinted at him. He was putting on a good show of confidence, but there was a tenseness to his body that couldn’t be hidden, and some of the summoned sand floating near him was curling into tight knots. “Haven’t heard that code name before. You new?”

Pharaoh waved his hand in a so-so gesture. “It’s mostly just that I stick to my hometown. We’re tiny, so we stay off the radar. And I usually manage to stay out of the news anyway.”

Tim nodded, but his eyes sharpened. Deliberately keeping out of the news wasn’t exactly a red flag, but it usually indicated something about the person in question. If you had a code name that you were clearly used to, but didn’t use for the public… There weren’t exactly any conclusions he could draw yet, but he tucked the knowledge away into the back of his brain anyway. “Do you have anyone you can call?” he asked.

The boy grimaced. “Not really. Two are out of the country, one doesn’t carry a phone, and the other is the only person back home right now and I can’t ask her to leave.”

Reasonable. The bats refuse to leave Gotham without at least one of them too. “I sent out a call, but it’s going to take a bit for it to get past the wards.”

“Can I see? I might be able to speed it up.”

Tim handed over his beacon. “You’re a magic user?” He was guessing sand-manipulating meta, but magic made sense too.

“Uh-huh. I’m not the greatest with wards, but I am a dab hand at tech,” Pharaoh said while prying open the beacon. As he held it, golden light crept from his hands into the wires, forming shapes that looked like some of the hieroglyphics his parents used to obsess over. Tim was vaguely surprised. Constantine had once mentioned that there were only a few people in the world who could do any kind of technomagic. Even the magic on his gear was secondary to the tech rather than embedded in it.

Tim got up and started looking around the room as Pharaoh worked. They couldn’t stay here for long. He moved some furniture around to block the door. It should collapse on the head of anyone who tried to get in. He shifted one of the ceiling tiles around and found there was a good amount of space between the floors. Perfect.

Pharaoh shouted in delight and Tim turned to see the connection light on the beacon turn on. Assuming there wasn’t some kind of emergency, they should have backup reasonably soon. The other boy was still grinning, “Dude, I think I’m in love with your tech. This is amazing.”

“If you like that you should see the batcomputer.”

“Can I? I do most of my stuff on a PDA I retrofitted, this is so much better it’s not even funny.”

“A PDA?” Tim blinked in confusion. How would you even—? He shook his head and gestured at the ceiling. “We need to get moving. They’ll have an easier time finding us if we stay here.”

Pharaoh nodded, still smiling from his apparent enjoyment of working with basic tech with little to no computational abilities. He clambered his way up with apparent experience. Tim wondered what kind of problems his hometown had that they needed a magic user who could do parkour.

Where Pharaoh needed a lift Tim scampered up. The sorcerer whistled quietly. “What kind of training do you even have?”

“Assasination, mostly,” Tim said as he started leading the way through the crawl space, carefully showing Pharaoh where to put his feet to make the least amount of noise.

“I thought bats didn’t kill?”

“Knowing how to kill is actually more useful in not killing people than not knowing how to kill, believe it or not.” Lady Shiva hated that.

“Huh. That sounds useful. I have to use specific spells when I want to just knock someone out, and I’m not as good at them so it’s a bit of a pain.”

“You like magic?” Data gathering, data gathering, if he was asking questions he wasn’t thinking about how nice Pharaoh’s voice was or how pretty his eyes were.

“Yeah. It’s like a puzzle, you know? There’s a lot of similarities to coding if you had to argue with the computer the whole time.”

Tim snorted.

They stilled at the sound of someone passing under them, and when they were gone Tim turned around for a second. “Hey, what do you think about picking some of these guys off?” He’d originally planned to keep them out of the fight until backup arrived, but he was getting the impression more and more that Pharaoh was competent enough to keep up for a bit.

Pharaoh grinned, and it was a sharp, unkind thing. For a moment he looked as regal as a king about to declare war, and Tim wondered if there was more to the code name than he had assumed. “I thought you’d never ask.”

“Where are they?!” the leader of the villains roared. “The facility is completely locked down, they couldn’t have gotten far!”

The guards winced and opened their mouths to explain when the door slammed open and one of the other villains ran in. He was bleeding, with weeping sores up and down his arms and crush damage on his fingers. “They’re picking off the guards!”

“What? What the fuck happened to you?” The leader screamed. The witch villain, who had been melting into the wall, ran over to attempt healing magic. The others barely noticed her.

“Three-quarters of our men are unconscious, and won’t wake up. And that little ‘civilian’ soulmate tried to crush me with sand!”

The witch spoke quietly. “He must have cursed you too. This isn’t healing.” The villain looked down at his wounded arms and screamed. Golden hieroglyphs climbed their way out of the blood and up his arm, and he felt his body go numb. Within thirty seconds he had keeled over unconscious except for the occasional scream, like he was struggling with nightmares wherever his mind had gone.

“No no no no no! This was supposed to be it! Our big break! You!” The leader turned to the witch. “You said he was a civilian! This was supposed to be easy!”

Out of nowhere the ceiling above them crumbled and down came several bats and members of Young Justice. When they finally got the beacon it took them almost an hour to get to the location, leaving them tense and ready to take it out on Tim's captors.

“I hope we aren’t interrupting anything!”

The door banged open again as they finished mopping up the remaining villains and mercenaries. Red Robin and a boy in civilian clothes tumbled through the door.

“Hey! You’re late!” Tim yelled.

Robin hissed at his older brother. “You needed help to save a single civilian then?”

Tim grinned an unholy grin. “Oh, right. This is Pharaoh. He’s my soulmate.”

The room burst into yelling.

A friend of mine sent me a yt video of a guy who was relocating frog eggs (prolly a vernal pool) and showed 1000s of baby frogs coming out of the water in his backyard. she asked me how I felt about it as a ecologist. In fact, it would be really rather bad if all of the offspring were to survive, because (1) they wouldn't be feeding the predators and decomposers that live off of their noble sacrifice, and (2) they will require massively more resources than they otherwise would. It can have all kinds of detrimental down-stream effects.

This is the reason we often see swarms of tadpoles darkening some small pools (especially ones where there are no fish!), and later hoards of froglets (that's the technical term) emerging from pools at once. It's an evolutionary strategy, that only few individuals survive to achieve reproductive age.

Point 1: it is *fine* if not all the tadpoles survive to adulthood. That's how the system is supposed to work. You are not doing the system favours if you are changing tadpole survivorship to 100%.

Now, humans really are fucking things up in a lot of environments. Environmental pollutants, like heavy metals, can cause major issues for wildlife, and especially frogs, which (1) are not as vagile as e.g. birds and medium- to large-sized mammals and thus cannot escape the problem zone effectively, and (2) are EXTRA sensitive to the environment because of their permeable skin.

Point 2: we do have some responsibility to do something if we notice that there is a major problem emerging, which could dramatically alter the population dynamics for one or more generations of frogs.

However, *moving* clutches of eggs that are found in polluted pools is not the right move, especially for your average person. There are many reasons that it is not the right move, but chief among them are

(1) A lot of frogs that lay eggs in vernal pools have tadpoles that cannot survive being in larger ponds, and certainly cannot survive in streams or other bodies of flowing water.

(2) A lot of frogs that lay their eggs in vernal pools are already adapted to less than ideal conditions, and have excellent strategies to overcome those conditions, such as incredibly quick metamorphosis (sometimes just a few days!)

(3) By moving clutches of eggs, you could easily be moving the pathogens or pollutants that are causing the problem in the first place.

(4) If there is Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis fungus around, you are spreading chytrid, and that is VERY bad. Chytridiomycosis has already driven several frog species to extinction, and caused massive population collapse in several others.

(5) If you do not know the species, attempts to rescue them might be aiding the advance of an invasive species.

(6) It's often illegal to intervene! Many species are protected by law, and you are not allowed to remove them from the wild. Consult your local laws.

Point 3: the responsibility to do something does not include removing the frogs and raising a frog army.

So what should we do if we find a clutch of eggs in an oily pool? Or in a nearly dried out puddle?

First assess the nature of the problem. Is the pool just about to dry out? Then leave it alone. The tadpoles will probably be fine (and if they're not, they'll provide rich nutrients to predators and decomposers). But are there signs of pollution? Then assess: is the pollution covering a larger area? Or is it localised? If you find dead frogs or other amphibians is a major warning sign, and it needs to be brought to the relevant authorities. Contact your local environmental agency/department, and notify them of the precise location of the problem, and its extent. Document everything with photos and videos.

Point 4: there are organisations and agencies specifically tasked with intervening in cases of environmental damage. It is *your* job to bring it to their attention, but unless instructed by them, you need not take any further action. It is their job to know what to do, and to take appropriate action.

TL;DR: 'Raising a frog army' is for the likes, not the frogs, and is not environmentally responsible or ethically defensible. Build a home for the frogs, and they will come.

Apropos of forest and national parks rangers (the dedicated Shit Has Gone Sideways Handlers) having their jobs axed, and as a former hiker, I think that if you’re outdoorsy, you ought to be aware of the following resources:

WHILST NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL HELP IN A TIMELY MANNER, I’d really recommend that folks familiarise themselves with these resources, particularly emergent wound care & how to use what3words, as in an emergency situation, all preparedness is helpful.

In addition to all of this, I really recommend that folks have a first aid kit in their backpacks/vehicles.

You do not need the Batcave in your rucksack or your car boot, but it never hurts to be prepared. You can find stocked first aid kits in most pharmacies and retailers.

Failing that, here is how I stock my personal ‘on the go’ first aid kit for my backpack:

- 1 x card of paracetamol/acetaminophen tablets

- 1 x card of aspirin tablets (substitute for ibuprofen if you’re on blood thinners, have a clotting disorder or have other contraindications for aspirin use)

- 5 x alcohol antiseptic wipes

- 1 x tube of antiseptic cream

- 1 x tube of antihistamine cream (bug bite cream)

- 2 x pairs nitrile gloves

- 30 x plasters assorted size

- 3 x large sterile wound dressings

- 2 x hydrocolloid plasters

- 1 x sterile gauze bandage

- 1 x micropore tape

You may also want to include;

- 3 x large non-adhesive wound dressings

- 1 x roll of comprehensive bandage (self adhesive; useful for fixing wound dressings in place or for stabilising sprains)

- 1 x tube arnica bruise cream

Emergency medications (asthma inhaler/EpiPen/glucagon gel for hypoglycaemia etc) should also be either on your person or in your kits.

Ensure that you’re wearing proper clothing.

In the summer, you need protective sunhats and sunglasses, as well as SPF; you should also ensure that you’re carrying more water than you think you need, as you’ll be dehydrating faster due to a combination of heat loss and exertion. Loose, covering clothing made natural fibres like cotton etc., will shield you from the sun and wick sweat.

If you’re in tick country, sleeves and long trousers that are tucked into socks are non-negotiables. Lyme disease sucks absolute ass and can take months to recover from, as does tick borne encephalitis, tularemia and anaplasmosis. Long hair should be tied up and covered with a hat; after your hike, inspect your clothing and yourself thoroughly for ticks.

Footwear is more important than you’d think. Hiking in your Converse is a sure fire way to twist your ankle to fuck, and if you’re a solo hiker, that’s a good way to get in deep shit very quickly. Hiking trainers or boots are ideal, though any well fitting, waterproof trainer with a good tread and a decent grip will also suffice providing you’re not going through harsh terrain.

Finally, marked trails and campgrounds are there for a reason. Going off trail, especially in terrain you’re unfamiliar with, is a spectacular way to get swallowed up by a ravine or unmarked cave system, get lost and die of exposure, or get eaten.

Human exceptionalism is a real phenomenon, and a detrimental one. For all intents and purposes, when in nature, you’re a ham hock with delusions of grandeur. Bears will kill you just as dead as they would a deer. Same goes for wolves, coyotes, exposure, thirst, caves and flash flooding.

Speaking of wild animals; do not approach them. If you’re close enough to pet them, you are close enough to get bitten/gored/trampled/clawed/otherwise killed in a grotesque manner. Make an effort to learn about any wildlife you may encounter before your trip, and what to do if you encounter them.

Enjoy the natural environment, learn about it, and have fun in it, as loving it and learning about it is the best way to get invested in it’s protection and preservation, but do so in a way that means you’re alive to advocate for it when your adventure is done.

This update is pretty Big, basically doubling the amount of Stuff in the game, so I'm very excited for people to get hold of it.

So, what exactly is coming in the update.

General editing/errata/etc. Cleaning up and clarifying a few things (which will also be updated in the basic version). Just tidying things up.

Big New Character Options.

The new character stuff is going to basically double the size of the game. You're going to get three entire classes each with unique abilities. These classes emerged originally partway through my run of Cess & Citadel as a response to the want for characters to have a little more heft to them. You can use the new Archetypes in conjunction or in place of the default character creation options.

On top of that, even more character options with a bunch of Backgrounds, each of which comes with their own unique "gear pack", which is another way to add a layer of personality to your character. Plus, a set of corresponding "Intuition Questions", which is a piece of tech I am borrowing from the upcoming Tomb Raider ttrpg.

And on top of that, an alternate system to HP that relies entirely on your equipped gear which necessitated a whole bunch of new gear lists. So much new gear.

Once this releases, I'll be updating the price for the "premium" version of the game, so snag it now if you want a deal. But the basic text only version of core rules will remain free (just without the Major Updates included).

Settling the Soldiers: Ptolemaic Cleruchic Land

The Ptolemies required a large army to maintain the state. The Macedonian royal house not only had various territories outside Egypt to protect but also needed to keep the native population under control, especially to preempt any ideas of ousting these foreign rulers. Their fear of Egyptian uprisings was well-founded, as the land was plagued by multiple rebellions beginning in the late 3rd century BCE. To bolster their forces, the Ptolemaic kings recruited mercenaries from various regions across the Hellenistic world. However, this proved to be an unreliable strategy, as mercenaries served the highest bidder and could not be fully trusted. This instability was starkly demonstrated when Galatian warriors in the Ptolemaic army rebelled against their overlords.

The core of the Ptolemaic army consisted of Macedonian and Greek colonists. Why? The monarchs likely trusted them more due to their shared cultural background. Additionally, Greeks and Macedonians were well-versed in phalanx warfare, which was considered the most advanced military tactic of the time. Beyond their military contributions, these colonists also played a significant role in the Hellenization of Egypt.

However, one major challenge was the limited number of colonists arriving from the homelands. This scarcity explains why the Ptolemaic kings were eager to integrate Greek-Macedonian prisoners of war into Egypt after conflicts with other Hellenistic rulers. For instance, after the Battle of Gaza in 312 BCE, Ptolemy I Soter ordered the settlement of captured Antigonid soldiers in Egypt.

Despite their shared cultural background, the Ptolemies needed an additional incentive to secure the loyalty of these colonists. They allocated each soldier a piece of land, a highly effective solution that tied these individuals more closely to their new homeland. As a result, the likelihood of a Ptolemaic soldier of Greek-Macedonian descent betraying the Egyptian king for another Hellenistic monarch decreased significantly. Their lives and livelihoods became rooted in the Land of the Nile, fostering a stronger sense of allegiance.

This allotment of land also addressed the issue of payment. By granting land, the Ptolemies ensured fair compensation for the soldiers' service without incurring excessive monetary costs. Additionally, this system contributed to the full exploitation of Egypt’s resources. As previously discussed, the drive to maximize the exploitation of Egypt’s land was one of the defining characteristics of the Ptolemaic monarchy.

These land allotments to soldiers were known as κλῆροι (klēroi). The size of this “cleruchic land” varied, ranging from 3.5 to 70 acres. The soldiers bore a dual responsibility: cultivating the land and serving the king in the army when summoned. Once settled—often with their families—the soldiers could choose to cultivate the land themselves or sublet their klēros to a tenant.

Cleruchs enjoyed significantly lower rent compared to other farmers working on “royal land.” However, they were not exempt from taxes and were still required to contribute to the royal coffers.

Initially, the kleroi were not considered the personal property of the soldiers and were certainly not hereditary. If a soldier fell out of favor with the government, he could be easily evicted from his land. However, this began to change around the middle of the third century BCE, as records emerge of kleroi being granted to individuals and their descendants. By the end of the second century BCE, this practice had become standard. Cleruchs came to regard their land allotments as inalienable property, which they could pass down to their heirs. Types-

Fuzzy Aura 

Lack of clear personal boundaries. Tendency to take on other people's stuff, get caught up in other people's problems. Issues with defining healthy personal boundaries and neutrally saying 'no' to others. Unconscious believing 'if you want people to like you, it's not okay to set boundaries'.

The Aura Wall

A defensive attempt to define personal boundaries. Putting up psychic walls and blocking out others to feel safe. Tendency to assert your will through resistance and judgement.

Spiky Aura

Feeling threatened and ready for conflict. Deeply wounded. Usually a history of some kind of abuse: physical, sexual, mental, emotional, etc. Reactive. When a person has this kind of aura stance, they will often hurt other people--even those who may be trying to

Neutral Aura

Clear sense of self. Able to define healthy boundaries with others. Takes self responsibility. Owns personal space without a need to fight or defend. Empowered to respond neutrally

Size of auras

Large Aura Definition

A large aura might demonstrate an intent to control or dominate others. But a large aura can also indicate spreading yourself too thin and taking too much responsibility for others. When your aura is spread out wide, it is easy to lose touch with your inner Self and become overly focussed on things outside yourself.

Small Aura Definition

A small, withdrawn aura often indicates fear on some level. You might be trying to hide, hoping you won't attract attention. You may be holding back your energy until you feel safe to release your energy to flow. When your aura is pulled in tight, it is easy to lose your sense of Self, as it shuts down the healthy flow of energy through your system.

Above Absent: Energy Out of Body

If you are unhappy with your life, or have been deeply wounded on some level, you may have a tendency to unconsciously "check-out" and be out of your body. While you-as spirit are out of your body, you can temporarily avoid facing any pain or problems. But eventually you and your body will need to deal with these issues. If you tend to keep your energy above your body, the end result is being absent, rather than present, for your life. Consciously leaving your body once in a while is not generally a problem.

A healthy balanced aura extends about an arm's length around the body. With your aura an arm's length around, you can be aware of others and the world around you, without losing your sense of Self. Having your aura an arm's length around your body, supports you in being present and allows for a healthy, balanced flow of energy.

Aura colours-

Red-

the colour of the root chakra, which represents our connection to the physical body and the concrete world around us. It emerges in the auras of bold people who have a natural awareness of their physical reality and like expressing their aspirations in the tangible world. They are enthusiastic and shameless about having dynamic and bountiful experiences in life as a physical person. This zeal and restlessness drives them forward in life; they are natural born leaders. They are not frightened of death, birth, overindulgence, sensuality, or adrenaline-producing activities. Those with red emissions in their energy fields are powerful individuals who seldom deny themselves the delights of this world.

The saturation and brightness of a colour in your aura might signify a variety of things. If the red in your aura is murky or dark, it might indicate that you are hanging onto anger, irritation, or trauma. It may also signify poor energy, fatigue, or being overworked.

Magenta-

Individuals with a magenta aura are truly originals. Magenta is a colour that is a blend of red and blue frequencies, falling somewhere in the middle of the colour spectrum. Those with magenta emissions in their aura have a profound comprehension of the physical world (Red) as well as an enhanced ability for intuitive thinking (Indigo). Orange is the energy centre for exchange and partnerships, emphasising friendship and social interaction. Those with orange emissions in their auras connect with the vibrations of happy trade, whether it is for labour, resources, money, time, energy, or love. They excel in cooperation because of their capacity to be relatable and personable. Individuals with an orange aura are very sensitive and active. Strangers do not stay strangers for long for folks with an orange aura, as friendships form swiftly among these relationship gurus. People with orange auras have difficulty sitting still because they are thrill seekers who want to explore everything the world has to offer. Because they seek novelty and stimulation, vibrating at a lower orange frequency might lead to addiction or difficulty committing in relationships.

Yellow-

Yellow is the colour of the solar plexus chakra, which governs our intelligence, self-esteem, and personal strength. Those with yellow in their energy field experience vibrations of confidence, happiness, a strong feeling of self, esteem, and the power to inspire others to greatness. They have a lot of energy and may positively encourage others. Individuals with yellow auras inspire and assist others by just being themselves - they shine like the sun and may have a strong capacity to analyse difficult topics. Those that shine yellow are full of inner pleasure, kindness, and naturally attract others to themselves.

They are also highly realistic, security cautious, and like to keep their emotions to themselves. They are not risk takers; rather, they want to lay a solid foundation before taking a leap. These detail-oriented creatures take a systematic approach to life and frequently complete time-consuming chores that annoy others. They are down-to-earth people who respect long-term relationships. Those with tans in their auras like analysing, learning, and understanding three-dimensional reality. They think strategically and linearly.

Green-

Green frequencies correspond to the frequency of the heart chakra, the centre of human growth and healing. Those with green auras exude unconditional love and life force energy, which all beings that come into contact with them may perceive. As a result, people with bright green auras tend to be drawn to nature and animals, and they are natural self-healers. Being in the presence of someone with green emissions in their energy field may be a really relaxing and serene experience. The most prevalent aura colours are white and various colours. These people are spiritually driven and have an open and receptive attitude towards the cosmos. They are frequently disinterested about material affairs or ambition, preferring purity and honesty. They operate from a pleasant, encouraging, and nonjudgmental perspective. White energy is associated with inner enlightenment and the pursuit of cosmic wisdom. When white seems hazy or muddy in the aura, it may imply that you are in flux, puzzled, or waiting for answers.

Black-

I believe that black attracts bad spirits, yet it is not always a negative aura colour. It indicates that a person has formed a protective barrier, maybe to wall oneself off after been emotionally or physically injured recently.

Brown-

A brown aura denotes an earth-mother personality type, which describes a natural carer with a practical and easygoing sensibility. This shade's portrayal of soil and land is a natural fit with its aura's signature traits of prioritising nature and the environment. Those with a brown aura have a down-to-earth tolerance that allows them to accept shortcomings in others and in themselves. This colour reminds us of the rich black soil on which we live and construct our houses, and it has been observed that persons with a brown aura are good foundation-builders, symbolically starting initiatives and endeavours on solid ground. Not other than in gym class. I do love swimming, but not in a sports way. Just in a "being in the water" way.

I already mentioned being good at music/singing in a previous answer, so I guess writing? I have 45 works up on AO3, I've been accepted to 7 zines as a writer... And have numerous other projects on physical paper that I haven't bothered transcribing to post yet. So...yeah.

"And The Band Played On" by Randy Shilts. I happened to read it because my mom kept a copy on a shelf by the family computer. It wasn't as though it was all new info to me, but hearing about the AIDS epidemic from people on the ground, from the days of first emergence, of how the system failed and failed and failed again because of prejudice, shame, and misinformation; of how so much of its spread and severity came down to human malice. It was an entirely different understanding from what the PSAs in school and sidebars in textbooks had left me with. Hearing the suffering of those sitting by the bedsides of brothers and lovers dying from a mysterious disease, wasting away into dust and bones while being denied even the most basic treatment just because they were gay. Hearing the frustration of the few outside the community who chose to fight for them instead of against them. Knowing what happened to an entire generation of our elders, both the dead and the survivors. Knowing the reason so many of them are silent is because they simply aren't here to speak, for themselves or us.

It may seem ridiculously mundane, but...in this economy? Buying our house.

Keeping my two orchids not only alive, but so happy that they won't stop putting out new stems and tend to keep their flowers for months on end.

Planting five different colors of columbine in a correct enough arrangement that they are not only spreading wildly on their own, but produced a new hybrid color (white) after just one year.

Picking a spot so perfect for planting my tea rose that it's not only happily survived without fuss, but quadrupled in size with minimal tending.

Rehabbing two neglected azaleas and a ratty hydrangea that I wasn't sure would make it (and now the hydrangea is big enough that an adult could hide in it).

I'm so very proud of our home and of our plants, inside and outside. And I count myself blessed to look forward to pouring love into it all for years to come. <3

The Liberian-flagged Morning Midas ship is carrying 3,048 vehicles, including 70 electric models and 681 hybrids, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

There were no reported injuries among the 22 crew members of the Morning Midas, who were evacuated onto a lifeboat.

They were rescued by a nearby merchant vessel called the Cosco Hellas in the North Pacific, roughly 300 miles (490 kilometers) southwest of Adak, which is in Alaska's Aleutian island chain.

Ship's Fire Status Unknown

A large plume of smoke was initially seen at the ship's stern coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles Tuesday, according to U.S. Coast Guard photos, and a Wednesday statement from the ship's management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime.

The Coast Guard said the Morning Midas is estimated to have approximately 350 metric tons of gas fuel and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard.

"The relevant authorities have been notified, and we are working closely with emergency responders with a tug being deployed to support salvage and firefighting operations," Zodiac Maritime said in a statement.

"Our priorities are to ensure the continued safety of the crew and protect the marine environment."

The U.S. Coast Guard said it sent aircrews to Adak and a ship to the area. The status of the fire onboard the ship was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon, but smoke was still billowing from it, according to the Coast Guard.

"As the search-and-rescue portion of our response concludes, our crews are working closely with the vessel's parent company, Zodiac Maritime, to determine the disposition of the vessel," said Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard's 17th District.

"We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel Cosco Hellas, who helped save 22 lives."

The 600-foot (183-meter) Morning Midas, a car and truck carrier, was built in 2006.

Fire Safety Risk for Cargo Ships

Earlier this month, a Dutch safety board called for improving emergency response on North Sea shipping routes after a deadly 2023 fire on a freighter that was carrying 3,000 automobiles, including nearly 500 electric vehicles, from Germany to Singapore.

That fire killed one person, injured others and burned out of control for a week, and the ship was eventually towed to a port in the northern Netherlands for salvage.

The accident increased the focus on safety issues on the open sea and on containers that fall off the massive freighters, which have increased in size dramatically in recent decades.

My ghost biology head canon

I've found that sharing my head canons is a lot of fun, so I thought I would share more of my thoughts on ghosts.

First off, I imagine the particulars of how ghosts work being something that varies widely. There are some things that are relevant for everyone, but a lot of things that you would expect to be species-wide constants vary based on the individual.

Each person's experience as a ghost is shaped by their particular mind and what works for them, with some minor influence from their ideas about ghosts. While their assumptions/beliefs about ghosts can influence how they function as a ghost, it will never override their own nature and cause them to develop into something antithetical to their own self.

Do ghosts need to eat? Some do. Some don't.

Do ghosts need to sleep? Some do. Some don't.

Are ghosts bound to a place or object? Some are. Some aren't.

I imagine that some ghosts have cores that function like a brain/heart/whatever, are their one vulnerability, and injuries to them are serious business, like the fandom likes to imagine. I don't personally think this would be true across the board. Some would have cores that operate differently and others would have a system that doesn't have anything similar to cores at all.

Some ghosts might have something that could be called a core, but rather than a delicate vital organ, it's more like a combination of a lifeboat and the black box from an airplane. It's small and not especially powerful but virtually indestructible. If their body gets messed up too badly they can jettison themselves as a core and hide away somewhere safe until they manage to rebuild their body.

I imagine Skulker working like this. The "real Skulker" is not a tiny blob sitting in a cockpit, piloting a giant robot. When he's all suited up, he's experiencing things as the man-sized being he appears to be. That said, if he gets roughed up to the point where it makes more sense to just cut his losses, he can go tiny-blob-mode and bail before rebuilding himself.

Some ghosts exist split among multiple bodies because some parts of themselves work better separately. I imagine Johnny 13 and his Shadow are actually one ghost, but there were parts of himself he didn't understand and wasn't managing well that he was better equipped to understand and accommodate as a separate being. Johnny probably fought a lot with shadow when he was newly formed before stepping back and finally managing to view him with a sort of empathy that is often easier to offer to others than to oneself.

The particulars of Danny's ghost half were largely shaped by the dance of give and take between his human and ghost half adapting together. A lot of it either follows the lines of his human half or fills in the gaps, but it also follows Danny's nature in ways that always would have been part of his ghostly self even if he hadn't been a halfa. Being the child of ghost hunters actually left Danny with less of an idea of what ghosts were than the average person because he actively avoided thinking about it as much as he could, so a lot of his ideas about ghosts stem from his own personal experiences. His ghostly nature is fluid and highly adaptable, as well as eager to learn and explore.

Sometimes he develops abilities similar to things he's seen other ghosts do because "that's something ghosts can do." Sometimes he develops abilities as a response to whatever stress he's under (Danny will never admit he developed accelerated language acquisition because he was so stressed out about his grades that his ghost half interpreted the need to better understand purple-backed gorillas as a life or death emergency). Some just happen just because he grew that way.

Ghosts in general are not static. They learn and grow and change over time. The particulars of how they change over time are a bit less predictable than for humans, but it happens. They can have children (like Box Lunch) but the development of those children may not follow the same patterns as a human child's development.

I don't tend to imagine ghosts having "obsessions," exactly. The term "obsession" implies that it is unhealthy, overpowering, and impeding one's ability to function. Instead, I imagine them having something I'm calling "focal points" until I come up with a better name.

Focal points are things that are important, grounding, and central to a ghost's experience of the world. They may be activities or subjects of interest, but ghosts need to engage with at least some of their focal points with relative frequency for their health. Ghosts generally have more than one focal point and engage with different ones at different times.

Being denied access to one focal point in the short run will be disappointing but not dangerous, so long as they can still engage with others. Long-term, lack of access to one of their focal points can cause restlessness, anxiety, irritiability, and depression.

In some cases, a long-term inability to engage with a specific focal point may result in a focal shift, in which the focal point changed to something more reachable. This happens most frequently with a focal point centered on a person who is not willing to cooperate. While the focal shift is ongoing, the ghost will be atypically sensitive and prone to mood swings and experience an amount of discomfort proportional to how major of a focal point they are shifting. After the focal shift is over, the ghost should be able to function normally with no lingering ill-effects.

Not every focal point can be shifted and ghosts are highly recommended to seek council from a professional in ghost-medicine on any focal point related difficulties before making any decisions on how to proceed.

If not managed in a healthy way, it is possible for a ghost's relationship with one or more of their focal points to start bridging into obsessive territory, but this is the result of a problem, not normal functioning.
