Punk 101: A History of Battle Jackets
Battle Jackets have a long and interesting history in general, not limited only to punk. Today we see them as a reflection of the wearer, they are a form of self expression and affiliation.
Battle jackets can trace their origins back to WWII American pilots who would decorate their flight suits and bomber jackets with their squadron's insignia patches. They were jackets that allowed pilots to easily recognize each other and instilled a sense of pride and community in their owners. This is also where the term 'battle jacket' comes from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the war was over, pilots returned home and many found joy in the speed and excitement of motorcycles. Biker clubs were formed, and thus, biker culture as well. Pilots often used their bomber jackets while riding because of the protection they offered, though the sleeves were usually removed due to how they restricted movement. Jackets got decorated with club/gang logos to represent their wearer's affiliation, much like the insignia patches. As biker clubs grew, members without a pilot history often used leather or denim jackets to showcase their affiliations. There is a LOT more to biker jacket history, but this is what's really relevant to punk jackets.
Tumblr media
In the 60s, two different cultures evolved in the UK. The first is The Mods, known for listening to modern jazz and riding scooters (supposedly their name comes from the modern jazz thing. I would not have been surprised if it was from 'modification' considering the seeming obsession to keep adding mirrors and lights to their scooters). The other group was The Rockers who were known for listening to 50s rock and riding motorcycles. While the groups strongly disliked each other, they both decorated their jackets in ways that influenced punk's jacket scene. The Mods often added pictures, paintings, and patches to theirs, while The Rockers were more likely to be seen sporting spikes and studs. (Not to say that those things were strictly limited to each side - just what was more common)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following decade (the 70s), the two branches came together as various music subgenres collided and formed. Punk was among the genres formed, and the culture surrounding it was one of the first non-gang or club related groups to decorate their jackets. Taking influence from both The Mods and The Rockers, the characteristic punk look was formed, and intended to be a Fuck You to societal norms. In the earliest days, punk jackets were mostly covered in band patches, much like modern heavy metal jackets. As punk evolved into what we know it as today, with notes of anti-establishment and anarchy, it became more common to see political patches right along side the band ones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today's jackets are a personal statement. the bands you like, your interests, political statements. They are a symbol of individuality and rebellion against society. They are a physical representation of YOU and your history with punk culture. This is why it is so important within punk culture to make your own jacket or have someone help who can customize it to you. You are not a generic human off the rack, you have lived a life, had your own battles, have your own personality, and have your own history. A premade, mass produced jacket won't showcase any of that or really truly represent the individuality of 'you'.

If you had to make a #punkrock playlist to explain the sound of #punk from the beginning to now, but had to cap it at 30 songs... What would you put on it?
Who am I missing here? What songs would you put on it?

Fun Fashion Fact about ATSV #3:
The History of Hobies Boots: Punk Culture 101
Tumblr media
Although Hobies boots are not Doc Martens - it's most likely they're supposed to be.
Hobie wears knee-high cherry red combat boots - and although they look like Doc Martens at first glance, you may notice they aren't.
They lack the iconic yellow threading and the loop behind the boots.
However, despite this - it's most likely that his boots are supposed to be Docs, or at the very least heavily inspired by them.
Contrary to popular belief, Doc Martens are not originally British - they're German, with their production starting after WW2.
When Doc Martens came to the UK in the sixties and seventies -
the first model available to the UK were high-ankled and Cherry Red in color
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[NOTE: DO NOT wear these boots with white or red laces unless you want to be approached by racists or you are one. Red and White laces stand for skinheads/white supremacists respectively. Cherry Red Docs with red laces are one of their signatures. Docs have been sold with different color laces over the years, but the standard for new ones is now black. Yellow laces (which the brand sells) stands for anti-racism. I don't believe they have ever sold red or blue laces - only black and yellow now I think]
Tumblr media
And later on they produced the 1B60 - aka, the Cherry Red 20-eyelet boots, Hobies model.
So even though his boots aren't OFFICIALLY docs, probably for licensing reasons, but Hobie's boots seen to be designed directly off of the first model of UK Doc Martens.
Tumblr media
Hence why his shoes are one of the most consistent things to appear in his concept art. How cool is that!!!

☆ history.
PARK HYE-WON was born on december 8th, 1996 as the youngest daughter of entertainment industry moguls PARK JUNGHOON and KIM AH-YOUNG. the former is an award winning director and filmmaker, while the latter is a world renowned pop star and actress who began her career in the eighties. hye-won is the youngest sister of PARK DAHYUN and PARK AH-REUM, who are both members of DI-VERSE. from a young age, hye-won had an interest in the entertainment industry, developing a love for singing, dancing, and acting through her family members. she grew up listening to various genres, and eventually found out about bands such as NIRVANA, PARAMORE, LED ZEPPELIN, KISS, and THE PRETTY RECKLESS through her father and the internet.
at the age of 5, hye-won began gymnastics. at the suggestion of her coach, she eventually started competitive and sideline cheerleading in 2005, after her family moved to florida. she also had some acting experience, as she starred in plays and musicals throughout her school years, and had appearances in the tv shows that her family would appear in. in addition to that, hye-won also gained notoriety as a cheerleader, appearing on the cover of AMERICAN CHEERLEADER in 2009 and becoming quite the celebrity after her numerous world championship wins.
hye-won grew up wanting to start a band, inspired by TAYLOR MOMSEN and JOAN JETT, but as she continued dance lessons alongside her sisters, she slowly started to develop an interest in the k-pop industry. when her family moved back to seoul in 2010, hye-won joined a dance academy. three years later, in february 2013, she was cast off the street by YG ENTERTAINMENT.
she would pass auditions, and within hye-won’s first three months as a trainee, she was added to the potential lineup of YG’s new girl group, PINK PUNK. in june, she was introduced on the company’s youtube channel through clips of her dancing to “WHEN I GROW UP” and singing as she played the guitar, as well as through a photo and short profile. she appeared in various CFs afterwards, had cameos in various dramas, and even had vocals on songs by BIGBANG and 2NE1. however, just two months later, hye-won left YG, claiming that she wanted to finish high school in america before anything.
in may 2014, after hye-won’s graduation, she was cast again—this time by JYP ENTERTAINMENT. and, like before, she ended up passing auditions. as a trainee, hye-won would meet and become rather close with future bandmates SEOLHEE, RINA, and XIANGFEI. by may 2015, exactly a year after hye-won began training at JYP, she and seolhee were chosen to appear on the company’s survival show, SIXTEEN. due to her performance of “STILL INTO YOU,” hye-won found herself in the major group from the start. consistently a favored contestant due to her stage presence, skills, personality, and preexisting popularity, she went viral due to her performance during “DO IT AGAIN.” however, despite that, hye-won still failed to make it into the final lineup.
there was some backlash from hye-won’s fanbase, but in january 2016, she appeared again as a contestant on PRODUCE 101. like before, hye-won was popular among viewers, being chosen as the center for “PICK ME” and consistently receiving high rankings. however, halfway through the show, hye-won was accused by anti-fans of exploiting her family’s fame and using their wealth to make it into the industry. as a result, her rankings dipped severely for a moment, placing her in the twenties. despite that, after gaining sympathy from the public and being praised for her performances during “BANG BANG” and “24 HOURS,” hye-won eventually came in 2nd and finally debuted as a member of I.O.I.
following I.O.I’s disbandment in 2017, hye-won returned to JYP. news of a new girl group from the company had been swirling since early 2016, and she had already been apart of the group’s first lineup. it was rumored that the group could debut sometime in 2017, and hye-won’s fanbase hoped that she would be apart of it. turns out, she was, and on february 3rd, after 2 years of training, hye-won debuted as the LEADER and CENTER of SUPERSONIX.

Hi!! I saw that ur punk and I had questions if that’s okay!!! Im p sure I heavily align w punk ideology (and have already been cpunk for a while) (I strongly don’t want to conform to society and love all “weirdos”, fuck cops capitalism etc etc,,,) but I don’t listen to punk music or dress punk at all. I know u don’t have to dress any certain way (feel like ppl r gonna call me fake though) but people say u need to listen to punk music and I’m going to try !! but I’m very new and haven’t started yet.. when exactly is it okay to call myself punk? and umm while I do align with ideology I actually am very uneducated on anarchy and maybe similar concepts that I’m very interested in learning about but have no idea where.. can u give me any info on what being punk is really about and where to learn more? some people say there are “posers”’ but what exactly would make someone a poser?
hello! not a problem, i'm happy to tell you what i can :) (also ayy, fellow cpunk)
i would say that you can call yourself a punk when you're educated on the politics and ideology and can say for certain what parts you align with. being punk isn't about the aesthetic, it's about the ideology, so making sure you understand said ideology is the most important step.
that said, while punk ideology is generally left-leaning and anti-establishment, it's a massive umbrella that covers tons of different political beliefs. i personally am an anarchopunk, which is very left-leaning and centered around community instead of authority, but is directly against the beliefs of other subgroups like neo-nazi skinheads or national front which have both co-opted a lot of punk culture for its anti-establishment beliefs. there is no single set of punk beliefs, so it's important to do your research before adopting the label.
some places i would look to in order to learn more: classic punk literature (https://www.popmatters.com/punk-literature-101-recommended-readings is a great list of some places to start), and punk arts such as poetry, music, and zines, and punk history. dcdig.dclibrary.org has some fantastic collections that cover some of the history and politics that have influenced punk culture (i would very much recommend their DC Punk Archive Zine Library). in particular i'd look at the queer and BIPOC historical influences on punk culture, because those tend to get left out and knowing about that history is very important.
as for what makes someone a poser: posers in the punk community are typically people who embrace punk aesthetics but are uneducated on punk politics. they want the social recognition of the label but have nothing to contribute when it comes to their ideology. they tend to flock to places like tiktok where they can get that social recognition without having to talk about their beliefs. they also tend to gatekeep the punk community a lot. posers are not punk.
some red flags that a person might be a poser: they gatekeep the punk community, they don't talk about their beliefs and/or get irritated when people ask them about their beliefs, their punk fits are bought from amazon or other large corporations instead of being handmade or from small/punk owned businesses (it's pretty hard to tell from just looking though), they shame people for not listening to specific music or not "looking punk enough", they happily promote unnecessary violence because it's "edgy", they hate on everyone who doesn't agree with them, etcetera.
and in regard to your follow-up question about whether one can be emo/goth/nerd etc and punk at the same time, you absolutely can! these subcultures tend to overlap pretty often, and there's really no actual rules about what makes or breaks a punk identity other than being educated and honest about the labels you use.
i hope this helps, and good luck! :))

Most Beloved WWE Wrestler Tournament: Round 3 Statistics Dump
Followers: 260
Total Votes: 22,087 + 13,398 + 8,109 = 43,594
Number of times I caused tumblr drama over this tournament: 0, but I really got close
Beloved By Gender:
After Round 2, we were at a split of ~31/69 for female and male wrestlers. In a shocking turn of events, after Round 3, for the first time in the history of any of my tournaments, the male percentage has gone up by over an entire percent
Tumblr media
Voting Trends:
Round 3 had a low vote count day of 456 and the highest count day of 630, making the average 550.8 votes per day (discounting final day cause there were only 6 brackets), almost an extra hundred votes per day beyond Round 2's average of 462
(Also I'm still super proud of my datelines, btw)
Tumblr media
The 100%ers:
In the entirety of Round 3, there was only one wrestler who got a perfect score, which was Naomi with the full 59 votes in her favor
Public Opinion:
More and more famous favourites are being voted out every round

NFL Week 17
Tumblr media
We are down to the last week of the NFL regular season. I won’t lie I was disappointed in the performance of Justin Jefferson. Jefferson was held to 1 catch for 15 yards by the shit talking corner Jaire Alexander who backed it up. The Minnesota Vikings play the Chicago Bears and although they have a losing record…the team is historically known for being good on the defensive side of the ball. Jefferson would need 194 yards to break Calvin Johnson’s record. And as optimistic as I tend to be I just don’t see him having a game of that caliber when the game itself doesn’t effect playoff seeding.
Its crazy how, I think just 4 short weeks ago, Tyreek Hill was sitting pretty with 1500 yards and well above pace to break 2,000 yards in a season. The Miami Dolphins face the New York Jets who have the #2 allowed yards per game (192.5) defense. Cheetah Hill would need 278 yards to surpass Calvin Johnson and like I mentioned above I don’t see that happening. I guess we wideout fans will have to wait another season to see a wideout surpass 2,000.
The Wideout of the Week award goes to Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Evans had a monstrous day with 10 catches for 207 yards and 3 touchdowns. Whoever the corner on that right side was, I’m sure cried after the game. Evans scored on plays of 63, 51, and 30 yards respectively. He even dropped another 50 yard pass that would’ve been a touchdown on the goal line in the 3rd quarter.
Davante Adams was up to his usual domination of whooping db’s ass all over the field. And I appreciate his performance especially after hearing he had to take time away from the facility because the team chose to sit Derek Carr. Adams is playing at an extremely high level right now. Body language is everything and in this moment Adams body language exudes positivity and vivaciousness. In what was once called “The Battle of The Bay” the Raiders played one of their best games of the season against a San Francisco 49er team that I feel will be in the NFC Championship game. Adams caught 7 passes for 153 yards and scored two touchdowns. Adams leads the league with 14 receiving touchdowns and is 3rd in yards with 1,443. I like how he’s bounced back from a slow start. And with the way he’s played I know have to consider him for the Wideout of the Year award.
Chris Godwin has quietly put himself in position to reach 1,000 yards on the season. He needs 32 yards and will have done so for the 3rd time in his 6 year career. And this is nothing short of amazing considering he tore his ACL a little over a year ago and only missed two games because of it. While Evans dominated the day, Godwin found his way underneath coverage to finish the afternoon with 9 catches for 120 yards. The Buccaneers are hot and whoever gets this team in the first round will definitely have to be ready.
D.J. Moore has found a way to make plays this season. I think this is my 3rd or 4th time writing about the young wideout. One thing that makes me laugh when watching tape is knowing Moore is going to drop an easy one. But to his defense a lot of those really fast dudes usually have catching difficulties. Moore caught 6 passes for 117 yards and scored on an all-go switch up the left sideline. With one week remaining Moore would need 122 yards to have 1,000 yards on the season.
I’m a lover/connoisseur of the West Coast offense. I learned it my last two years of college playing for the 3rd winningest coach in NCAA history Dick Tomey. And I won a championship at Mater Dei while coaching under the same offensive philosophy. Brandon Aiyuk caught 66% of his passes with a west coast staple…2 jet lion…also known as slant. You have to have fearless wideouts in your system to run slants effectively. The wideouts can’t be no punk bitch. Aiyuk had 9 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown on a nice release for the three-yard slant.
Last on the list is Dallas Cowboys #1 wideout Ceedee Lamb. Despite early struggles with dropping the ball, Lamb has roared his way to #7 in yards with 1,307. He has played big time ball and I like how is game has progressed over the season. Now he won’t win or be in the discussion for Wideout of the Year but if I had to choose a Most Improved wideout than Lamb would probably be in the contention for that. Against the Titans Lamb caught 11 balls for 100 yards with zero tubs.
Wideouts the 2022-2023 regular season is a wrap after this week. Let’s Go Finish Strong, Make the Most of Every Play, Have Fun, and BaLLLL to the Wheels fallll!

Punk History 101
Chapter 1
“You're going to be late,” Adam said, flicking Blue's tiny ponytail as he passed.
“Yeah, I know,” Blue snapped, shoving books into her bag in the living room of the small apartment she shared with Adam. It was a small two bedroom on the edge of the university campus. Cramped, but she could room with Adam instead of a stranger and it was cheaper than those in the surrounding town.
“You shoulda woke up when I tried the first time,” he called from the kitchen, the southern accent he only allowed Blue to hear slipping in.
“Fuck off,” Blue said under her breath.
“Heard that.” Adam leaned against the wall above her. He held out a yogurt and plastic spoon. “Breakfast.”
“Lifesaver,” she said gratefully with a kiss on the cheek and put the offerings in the top of her bag, hauling it onto her back.
“Have a good first day.”
“You too! See you tonight for dinner!” she called over her shoulder as she hurried out the door.
It was a ten minute walk across the campus to her Womens' History I class room and she had five minutes to do it in.
“Fuck,” she muttered and started power walking as fast as she could to the East side of campus.
She broke into the room, nearly out of breath but only one minute late, and took a seat at the only empty table in the room. The professor gave her a disapproving look but continued passing around syllabuses and then took up position at the front of the room.
Blue looked around as she pulled her yogurt out and popped the top. It was a small room, tiny really, when compared to the normal class size at her college. She did a quick head count and realized why. Most classes here had at least seventy and took place in a theater-style room. There were only about forty people in this class, which explained why it was relegated to a tiny room with two-person tables.
Just as she had finished her head count and started actually paying attention to the professor, someone burst into the room, much like she had only minutes before, and only slightly more dramatically. The boy slammed the door open, making it bounce against the wall. Completely out of breath, he asked loudly, “Is this Womens' History I with Professor Calla Johnson at ten A.M.?”
“Yes, boy, just get the hell in here and find a damn seat,” said the professor, clapping her hands at him. Nice. Blue loved the ones that didn't care about proper language and all that. They usually weren't ones to take any crap but would also tell it like it is without sugarcoating it for the complacent masses.
Blue was further pleased when he sat down in the only empty chair next to her and she actually got a good look at him. He was easily the hottest person Blue had ever seen in real life. Thick, dark hair, a decidedly regal nose, and full lips. A small, upside down, filled-in triangle rested under the corner of his eye. He wore a cutoff jacket with- Blue leaned back slightly so she could see- a Blink-182 logo on the back. What the jacket left exposed was covered in tattoos, all the way down his hands and on his fingers. A chain connected from one of his front belt loops to something in his back pocket, probably a wallet. Her eyes made their way down his long legs to rest on his feet. Black Converse.
Guess nobody's perfect, she thought to herself as she looked at her own mud-caked Vans designed with “I heart girls I heart boys”. They matched Adam's.
Then she noticed that he was speaking. “-yourself?” he asked in a whisper.
“What?” Blue whispered back.
“The safety pins. In your ears. Did you pierce them through yourself?”
“Oh. Yeah, I did them myself with ice and a lighter,” she responded, proud of herself.
“You probably should've gone to a professional, that can be very dangerous.” One side of his lip curled up and he glanced down at her nearly empty yogurt container, the sugary fruit at the bottom the only thing left. “Are you going to finish that?”
“I didn't have the money. And no, you can have it.” She slid the fruit and spoon over to him.
“For a piercing? They're only about thirty a piece at most of the shops around here. I got my work done at this shop downtown.” He gestured to the spider bites in his lip and his stretched ears before scooping a spoonful of jelly.
“Yeah, that's a lot of money to drop at once,” Blue hedged.
“I could pay for them to fix your ear. Maybe we could get food after,” he offered, pulling his lip piercings into his mouth and tapping the spoon against the edge of the yogurt nervously.
Blue felt her face flush in embarrassment and anger. “My ears don't need fixin', thank you very much,” she bit out, her accent making an appearance. She put as much vitriol into her voice as she could. “And you can't bribe me into goin' on a date with you. You might have the money to throw around,” she looked pointedly at his clothes, which she now noticed were artfully ripped and converse that had to be brand new with the lack of scuffs on them, “but I'm not interested in any of it.”
“I didn't mean it like that,” he whispered. “I can't help where I came from either. I assure you that I didn't intend to sound like I was propositioning you and I apologize if it came out that way.”
Blue tried not to judge a book by its cover, but she had to admit she was surprised to have such an eloquent response from this extensively tattooed and pierced, punk rock looking boy. Though if she was right about his financial situation, she shouldn't be so surprised that he was well read and well educated.
She realized she was staring without responding. “Not everyone is impressed by your privileged life,” she finally said.
The boy's mouth opened to give an argument, but he promptly closed it and turned away from Blue, back towards the professor going page by page through the syllabus. Blue heard him mutter, “She's out of her mind.”
“You better be talking about the Blink song,” Blue said icily. He cut a quick sideways look at her but didn't respond.
“Okay,” Professor Johnson clapped her hands together. “I hope y'all will remember where you're sitting now because that will be your seat for the duration of this class. Before you go, introduce yourselves to the person sitting next to you because that will be your discussion partner for the next fifteen weeks.”
Blue breathed in deeply, looking up at the ceiling for one, two, three, four short seconds before blowing out and turning to face the tattooed boy again. She held her hand out. “Blue Sargent.”
“Gansey. Just Gansey.” He took her hand. “What kind of name is Blue?”
Blue bristled again. “What kind of name is Gansey, Just Gansey?”
“Gansey is my last name.”
“Well what's your first name?”
Gansey grimaced. “Never mind. Nice to meet you, Blue.”
“Wish I could say the same, Gansey. Bye,” she swept up her books and joined the crowd of people that were now filing out the door.

Clueless about punk? Know nothing about the 70's? Or wanna learn more? Start here! In the last part I examined Anarchy and what makes Hobie Anarchy personified. And next, I think it's only natural to turn my attention to the thing that makes Spider-punk - punk.
In this part I'm examining what punk is, why the movement was created, what punks believe, and what they stand against.
This is an analysis of Punk, 70's History, and why it makes Hobie who he is.

Punk -
What is it? What 'makes' you a punk? And should Punk be Gatekept?
Punk can be hard to define - and that's by design. With the whole 'hates labels' thing considered, it's understandable. It may be easy to feel like punk as a concept is confusing, or daunting to even grasp.
But remember, Punk is made for the people - and it's made to be accessible and understandable to all people, of every class and ability - so I hope I can help!
Punk as a Subculture What is a sub-culture? Is a sub-culture the same as an aesthetic?
Punk is a 'sub-culture' - a specific type often called a 'counter-culture'.
In basic terms, a subculture is a lifestyle.
Goths, Punks, Vegans, Nudists, Surfers and even things like the LGBTQ+ community are considered subcultures.
Subcultures effect many things such as they way you dress or your taste in music, and your hobbies. But subcultures can also effect things like your morals, political affiliation, identity, behaviors, and the spaces you exist in.
Subcultures are usually based around morals (Veganism, Punk, Straight Edge.), hobbies (Surfers, Stoners, Ravers), or identities (LGBTQ+ and African-American culture). By engaging in activities, a manner of dress, or a patter on behavior in a subculture, it becomes is way to outwardly express your beliefs and feelings - while also connecting with people who feel the same.
For example - Although Surfers are united through a hobby in specific, it'd be safe to assume that a surfer would, naturally, be pro-conservation, pro-animal rights, and anti-pollution. A surfer that promotes ocean trash dumping seems weird, right? That's because the surfer subculture has a political identity defined by the movement's past. Although a surfer surfs - what makes them a 'surfer' as a opposed to 'someone who surfs' is their participation in a culture that includes other things besides surfing, such as music, dress, and even the way they live - like choosing to live beach side or convert to vanlife, choosing to live off very little, etc. They may do some or all of those things, but all their core, what makes them a 'surfer' is their hobby, beliefs, and dedication.
The same way the Surfer 'Lifestyle' is more than just surfing, the Punk 'Lifestyle' is more than just music.
Punk is a subculture, a counterculture specifically. But what does that mean?
What's a counter-culture?
A counterculture is a subculture that arises to directly challenge a societal norm.
Not all subcultures are countercultures; but a lot are.
For example - Drag-racing is a subculture that exists around a hobby. By racing they are engaging in a subculture, but they're not directly trying to challenge society. Whereas on the other hand - Someone who is Straight Edge is consciously choosing not to drink - and consciously choosing to identify as straight edge in addition the being sober - in order to challenge societal norms and behaviors around drinking and drugs.
Most counter-cultures arise in response to a political event or social development.
Is a subculture and an aesthetic the same thing?
No. Subcultures and Aesthetics differ in one way -
A subculture displays and effects identity. An aesthetic does not.
What I mean is - a subculture effects your beliefs, thinking, behaviors or political alignment. An aesthetic does not.
For example - Hippy is a subculture because it encompasses a thought system. When you see a hippy - its safe to assume that they are anti-war and liberal. A 'republican hippy' seems absurd, because inherently, there is a moral and political align attached to the movement. Whereas on the otherhand - Emo is an aesthetic because it does not encompass a thought system - It is has no moral or political attachments. Although it includes a manor of dress and music the same way hippie may - it lacks moral implication. Because of that 'republican emo' is not contradictory - whereas a 'republican hippy' is.
Because of this, it usually makes no sense to judge someone based on their aesthetic. On the other hand, as the fashion, music, and style go hand in hand with it's politics, it's safe to assume and judge aspects of someone based on their subculture or counterculture. Punk is a counterculture - so it inherently has moral connotations - tied directly to the historical events the influenced it.
While someone being emo may not tell you much about who they are as a person, Hobie being a punk can tell us a lot about who he is!
[I talk more about Punk, subcultures, and aesthetics here.]
Now that we understand countercultures and their function, let's look at punk in specific.
Punk - Basic Roots & Definition
By objective definition:
Punk is a counterculture that developed around the 1970's primarily in the cities of London and New York. Made up of almost exclusively of lower- and working-class folks of all ages - the movement grew in response to a couple of different political events throughout the 70's, all of which shaped the message and lifestyle that would become punk. Mainly centered around government corruption, surveillance, and anti-communism in the Western World, these events inspired a movement of anti-government, anti-war, anti-surveillance, and anti-capitalism.
With World War 2 ending in 1945, the world was left in a world divided between capitalism and communism.
With the start of The Vietnam war in 1955 (don't fret, I'll explain), average people were growing tired of the seemingly endless wars, and the corrupted, secretive governments that commanded them.
This gave way to the hippy movement - an anti-war counterculture centered around radical peace and pacifism. But as the Vietnam War stretch through the 60's and into the 70's, the hippy movement and it's pacifism waned.
As the CIA began to squash protests, and Western governments engaged in more corruption and espionage - the pacifism turned to anger, and the outcry turned to music.
What came next was Punk.
Now that we understand the roots of Punk - let's do a quick run down of the historical events that influenced it, and the beliefs that arised from it.
Before we begin, keep in mind that these are all events that Hobie would live through - and have opinions about. Born somewhere between 1958 and 1961, and living in 1978 (according to his intro mugshot) - all of these things would have an effect on Hobie, the way he was raised, and the struggles he had to face.
All of them have a really cool influence on Hobie and the punk movement, so let's take a look -
1978 Punk - Basic Historical Events & Beliefs
The Vietnam War (1955 - 1975) - A war between the Communist North Vietnam and Capitalist South Vietnam. In order to ensure the spread of Capitalism, the United States government crossed the globe into foreign borders in an attempt to secure victory for North Vietnam. They committed a LOT of atrocities that still effect the Vietnamese people to this day. In addition, The US government participated in drafting during this time. Eventually, the Communist Resistance proved victorious, and the country of Vietnam is currently communist. Resulting Punk Belief - Anti-Capitalism, Anti-War, Anti-Colonialism, Anti-Draft, Pro-Communism, Pro-Armed Resistance (in response to North Vietnam's armed victory.)
The Rise of Margaret Thatcher (1975-2013) - Often called the most hated woman in all of Ireland and probably the UK too, Margaret Thatcher is one of the most influential British Prime Ministers of all time. Leader of the 'Tories' (Short for Conservative) since 1975, Margaret Thatcher took office in 1979. Which means in 1978 - when Hobie is - she would currently be running her campaign for Prime Minister. Margaret Thatcher largely contributed to the unrest and conflict within the British-occupied Northern Ireland, as well as hardship within the working-class in her own country. Even though she left office in 1990, it can easily be said her damage lasted until the day she died, and even beyond. When Hobie says he hates the PM. He without a doubt means her. Resulting Punk Belief - Anti-Government, Anti-Conservative, Anti-Colonialism, Pro-Armed Resistance (in response to the Irish Republican Army)
The Civil Rights Movement - It can be hard to believe that Hobie's life overlaps with that of the Civil Rights Movement - but it does! With Malcom X's assassination in 1965, MLK's assassination in 1968, and Fred Hampton's (Black Panther Party) assassination in 1969 - regardless of how you age him - Hobie's childhood was largely characterized by the death of many Civil Rights Leaders in America. Even despite being British himself, Hobie would directly face this for much of his childhood - as racial segregation was legal within the UK until 1965 (around the time he'd be 4-7, if you age him 17-20). However this era was also characterized by the rise of Black culture in media, whether it be Disco, Ballroom, The Black Panther Party or Blaxploitation Movies. Resulting Punk Belief - Starch Anti-Racism, Extreme Race Solidarity, Affirmative Action, Black Pride
Queer Liberation Wave 1 (1969-1979 and onward) - After spending years as an oppressed, underground subculture Queer Identity and it's liberation came to limelight throughout the 70's. The 70's began and ended with two of the most important events in Queer History - The Stonewall Riots and The White Night Riots. In 1969, New York City police officers raided and brutalized patrons at a popular pub called 'Stonewall'. Many trans people as well as a number of drag performers were being arrested for cross-dressing, which was illegal at the time. Stormé DeLarverie - a mixed-race drag king and butch lesbian, called out in anger and desperation at a crowd of onlookers, which incited the riot that is known as the beginnings of the Queer Liberation Movement. Stonewall Inn still exists until this day - and a year after it's anniversary - the first ever pride parade was started in NYC. Ten years later in 1979, a man named Harvey Milk was running for office in California. An openly-gay man and activist, Harvey was assassinated by a man named Dan White. When Dan was only lightly sentenced for this however, 100k people marched for Harvey's justice - sparking a night of violence and direct conflict with the police. Resulting Punk Belief - Anti-Police, Anti-Justice System, Anti-Bigotry, Anti-Homophobia, Queer Liberation
Other notable historical mentions that are just as important but probably too complicated and/or boring for me to talk about:The Cold War (1945 - forever probably) - The on-going and ever-evolving power struggle between Capitalism and Communism, The West and The East, and nuclear warfare. Yay. Particularly heated due to the Vietnam War, and conflicts in the Middle East. The Watergate Scandal and the Nixon tapes (1972) - The Nixon administration gets caught wiretapping an opponent's office. Nixon is caught on tape trying to cover this up. Tapes are leaked. Nixons resigns. The War on Drugs (1971 - forever probably) - The Nixon administration ignites 'The War on Drugs', a campaign for strict criminalization of drug use. Although a ploy to 'clean up streets' it's backwards logic actually led to more extreme drug conditions. In addition, it also overlapped with the CIA distributing cocaine and crack into Black communities in the 1980's so.... yeah the drugs won the war.
So, What does any of this have to do with Hobie Brown?
And Can Hobie be written better?
Now that we have a better understanding of the world that raised Hobie, when we look back at him, we can get a lot clearer view of who he is and what he probably believes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[And if you need a second to look at him after reading this far I completely understand I do too here ya go]
With all that in mind, we can say:
Being born somewhere between 1959 and 1962, Hobie Brown is a black guy raised in an era of persistent conflict, growing conservatism, and on-going social change. His existence is resistance in and of itself.
History-wise:
Tumblr media
Raised in the 60's and coming-of-age in the late 70's - Hobie's life has probably been characterized by persistent war, and a generation who met it with radical kindness and compassion.
Although Hobie is a punk himself, Punks and Hippies have roots in the same places and concerns - albeit it different approaches. But at their cores, they're about freedom - and compassion towards others who need it most.
Hippies centered their movement around kindness and non-violence, but also action through resilience, community, and peaceful protest. And Hobie may not believe in non-violence (which - he doesn't. He believes in violence let's be clear.) we can still see the influence of Hippies on his upbringing and behavior.
Throughout ATSV, Hobie's action are motivated and based on resilience within the face of an oppressive institution, and his actions of protests are direct ones - they're indirect, such as building community between him, Miles, and Gwen. His methodology is one of gaining intelligence and destabilizing from the inside.
Race-wise:
To put it blatantly, as this something I feel like isn't highlighted about his character enough-
Hobie would have direct and real experience and trauma around his race based on the time he's from.
And without a doubt, his race would be something he has a lot of pride in.
Hobie would be very vocally proud to be black.
For once, Hobie without a doubt would be raised in a time where racial discrimination and segregation was legal for the beginning of his childhood. He's raised by black people who have lived with this segregation and abuse for all of their lives. And despite the illegalization of segregation in 1965, many racist attitudes would still persist to his modern year.
But, this is Hobie we're talking about. Hobie also was raised in a time where pride in a black identity was stressed at every turn. He's a black guy in 1978. He has wicks. Those two things connect.
Tumblr media
When you see his leather vest, your first thought may connect to Sex Pistols, or UK punks. But Black Panthers - a movement that existed all throughout his life, wore leather jackets just the same.
I believe the Panthers influence Hobie a lot too. Many know the Panthers for their direct conflict with police - and Assata Shakur (Tupac's Aunt) being a member.
But the Panthers were also ALL about community. In fact, they started a program to feed inner-city kids breakfast and lunch throughout summer. Many are still going across the country. {As a child, this program fed me and my schoolmates :) }
Hobie takes after them. He sees a younger black child in need of help, and he takes a break from fighting to help them, mentor them, and teach them about the cause. Hobie would absolutely have a Black Panther pin on his jacket!
This is something that is really just brushed over in fanfic and fandom and I'm hoping to write a piece about how to better characterize him because of this - but from here, let's keep this in mind!
Political-wise:
Hobie lived in a time of extreme change, progress, and political development. And to some, his methods may see just as extreme.
But now that we have a context for who he is and who he exists as, lets me transparent about it.
Growing up post-Hippy era, during the rise of conservatism in Britain - as a low-classer class black kid - Hobie's attitude towards activism would differ than those before him.
As most of the adult population seemed numb to war, and most of the Hippy subculture disbanded, outward rebellion and resistance would look a lot more pro-active in many ways, but just as thoughtful.
Hobie is very clearly an anarchist, but considering the political sphere of communism during the time as his behavior towards Miles and Gwen - I do believe he'd support communism, with anarchy being his primary stance and focus.
I honestly believe that Hobie would be pro-armed resistance. As Northern Vietnam and the IRA defended their homelands from foreign invasion, and the Black Panthers armed themself with guns against brutal police forces - Hobie's life would be colored with resistance through armed means.
Hobie uses his guitar as a weapon, both musically and physically, and he carries it openly. He doesn't need to do this. He's Spider-man. He choses to do this. I think Hobie would approve of the oppressed arming themselves, and that's why he does it himself.
And of course, he's anti-police or any form of military, militia, what have you. They are the arm of the state and exist only to target civilians with their will. I believe he would have no sympathy for police - as actual punks in his era had no sympathy for police. [And if he did (he doesn't) he'd be directly shunned by every other punk for doing so, because wtf.] But out of respect for the actual punks who inspired him, the Black activists brutalized, the queer people targeted, and all those who suffered under oppressive policing during this era (many of which are still alive and maybe even our parents), lets all agree Hobie outwardly and vocally hates police.
For many reasons. Many reasons personal and influenced by direct experience with him, or people he cares deeply about.
Please keep that in mind. It's quite literally impossible for Hobie to not be affected by these events to some extent.
Personality-wise:
This will be expanded in the next part - and of course this is just my opinion, but personality-wise, I think: Hobie is very politically educated and dedicated. And I feel like this is another thing that isn't highlighted enough or shown enough in fandom.
Hobie's morals, behavior, and methodology doesn't come from nowhere - and although they may be expressed in the music he listens to, the music itself is not the source.
It comes from direct experience with political action outside of being Spider-man.
Based on his deep understanding of anarchy and punk, we can guess that Hobie's very well-read, particularly in history and social theory. Both the IRA and North Vietnam were Marxist-Leninist, so it wouldn't be far of a leap to say that Hobie could be anarcho-communist.
Hobie would absolutely take the time to read - things like the Communist Manifesto, the Black Panther literature and other things.
In my opinion, from all of this - I can only assume Hobie is a reader, an avid one. He without a doubt participates in direct action outside of being SM - such as attending an anarchist/communist union, attending protests out of costume, organizing and planning meetings with other leftists, collecting and gathering supplies and food for those in need, squatting and securing housing for the homeless, and a lot of other things punks that aren't Spider-man do.
It kinda wouldn't make sense for him not to. He was a punk before he was Spider-man. When Hobie isn't being Spider-punk, and he's being a normal punk - if we try to consider how he spends his free time, a lot of the time our instinct is to imagine him and band. And that's a large part of Hobie.
But all of this is too. These are all things Hobie enjoys, because Hobie enjoys helping people. When Miles breaks free from the society, he's happy for him. It's all he wants.

When we genuinely put Hobie into these scenarios, it really helps to humanize him. We can all see the depth in his character, and that depth comes from a real, genuine place.
Like a punk opposing the draft, Hobie opposes the oppressive leader that mandates the trauma of youth. Like a Black Panther with their afro, Hobie wears his hair with pride.
All of these events contribute to him and who he is, and he shows it with everything he does and chooses to be.
I hope understanding these events helps you understand Hobie and his motives more - and I hoped this post helped you understand the history of punk more!
-------------------------------------------------------
This is UNGODLY long - and ungodly wordy. But if you read this far, thank you! And I hope it helped at all! If you learned anything or have any questions, please let me know! I'd love to hear your thoughts, insights, revelations, etc. As you can probably tell I love rambling about Hobie and I'm totally normal and functional and not at all obsessed.
Please stick thoughts of Hobie Brown in my enclosure. I promise I'm normal about him. Thanks again!

Can you do headcanons of the dorm leaders with a s/o that is a cyber goth. If all the dorm leaders are too much you can just do idia and malleus ^°^
+ if you like my writing, you can buy me a ko-fi to support me!
Riddle Rosehearts
Looks at you up and down often, before he really asks about your style. He’s never seen anything like it, it’s very unique looking... Riddle wonders if that’s just how the people from your homeland are like.
It’s a little tough for him to process alternative styles, at first. They seem uncommon, he wonders if they’re breaking dress code somehow, and even if they aren’t, they make him uneasy because it’s something he’s so unused to.
He doesn’t want to be impolite so he tries not to question you about it, but his curiosity gets the better of him, and he ends up doing it. Be prepared to teach him the entire history of alternative subcultures because this boy knows nothing.
When the doubts are settled in his head, he’s mostly indifferent to it. He likes it on you, though, it’s one of the things that make you unique.
Leona Kingscholar
The first thing he thinks when he sees your getup is yikes, that probably took forever to put together, then he moves on with his day.
Savanaclaw feels like a place that would have some... punk-y students, or at least whatever their world’s alternative to it would be, so a darker and edgier sort of style isn’t something he’s that unused to. He’s just put off by how elaborate it looks.
Idly asks you about how long you take to get ready one day. Teases you when you explain your routine to him, saying that if you went any further, you’d end up like that narcissist from Pomefiore, then promptly falls asleep on you again.
It ends up kind of growing on him. He likes the imposing aura cyber goth gives you. If you introduce him to any alternative music, he might enjoy these from time to time too.
Azul Ashengrotto
It makes him assume you’re from Ignihyde lol. If you’re not, he’ll only be figuring that out when he asks you to deliver some club papers to Idia, and you mention you have no access to his room whatsoever...
Because of his mental association of it with Ignihyde, he’s mostly curious if your sort of attire means you work with some sort of technology? It does remind him a lot of that.
Azul is another one you might have to teach Goth 101 to, though he’s more curious about what the purpose of your style is than its history. The concept of fashion as self expression is a bit confusing to him, who looks the way he does based off on what he thinks is best for business.
He doesn’t have anything against it at all though! You’re you, and he thinks you look the best when you’re comfortable. If that’s what puts that confident smile in your face, then Azul approves it.
Kalim Al-Asim
Thinks it looks so cool, asked you about why you looked the way you do the very first time you two met up.
Circles around you, touches your accessories gently if you’re okay with it, asking all sorts of questions about your style. Is that how people from your home look like? How long does it take for you to dress up? How did you do that to your hair? He’s sparkly eyed like a kid at an amusement park.
He’s just never seen anything like it, and he’s super excited to learn about something so different. Tell him about what cyber goth means to you, show him some music you like, especially if it’s rave stuff, he’ll have a blast.
If you’re into makeup, he wants you to do his. He just has this stuff he puts on his eyes everyday, he wants to look cool like you do! Though, he’s a bit fidgety, which might make you mess up.
Vil Schoenheit
Loves it. So much. It’s such a refreshing, eye catching style to him!
Cyber goth isn’t something he’s seen much, if at all. He’s very interested on how you put your looks together, what image you’re trying to show others with this. He wants to know who you got the idea from, or where.
If you do a lot of dramatic makeup, he’ll quiz you about products. Where did you get an eyeliner this pigmented? How do you make your eyebrows so sharp? He has his own techniques, of course, but he’s always eager to hear about others, especially when they have a style as unique as this. You two might swap beauty advice even.
Mentioning the style is linked to particular music subcultures also interests him, he’ll give your favorite music a shot to understand how it inspired your look. It probably won’t be his thing, but he’ll find it interesting nonetheless.
Idia Shroud
Your style is definitely one of the things that has him drawn to you. The first time he sees you he’s starry-eyed, you looked like you walked right out of a game or anime, a hero from a dystopic sci-fi adventure. Idia thinks you look so cool.
He doesn’t ask you much about it until you get closer, but just because of his awkwardness, really. His questions are a bit hesitant, he’s afraid to put you off, but you can tell there’s so much wonder behind them. He wants to know how and why you started dressing like this, were you inspired by a character somewhere?
He gets excited showing you anything that reminds him of your aesthetic, like new cyberpunk sort of series or the gadgets he’d been working on. He thinks it’s silly so sometimes he contains himself, but you have a really unique presence in his mind, so many of the things he loves remind him of you.
He’ll work up the courage to ask you for help trying out cyber goth stuff too, from clothes to music. He doubts he could go out dressed like you do, but he thinks it’d be fun to incorporate some of these subculture’s elements to his life. Idia’s a cyber goth ally, if you will.
Malleus Draconia
It doesn’t initially occur to him that your style is unusual, since he’s grown up around people wearing pretty much all black -- He just assumes the designs and splashes of neons are something common to your culture.
He doesn’t think of it much, but he likes it! Malleus does love how you look in darker colors, he thinks it gives you a very regal air. Like you’re his consort at the Valley of Thorns, almost... but that’s an embarrassing thought he doesn’t really voice.
If he ends up learning that it’s not an usual style, he’ll be very curious about it, full of questions. What does it mean for you to dress like this, then? Is it signaling a link to some bloodline or ethnic group? Or is it associated with a specific occupation?
You’re gonna have to teach him Goth 101, like with Riddle. But he’s a good student, so don’t worry.
