How can you even jump ship after decades lol what pairing is this?

So apparently in the most recent Detective Conan movie it was revealed that Shinichi and Kaito are cousins, and they're like. One of if not the biggest m/m ships. As of right now they're the biggest ship on AO3 at all with just shy of 3400 fics.

For perspective the next biggest ship on AO3 for the fandom has less than 1440 fics, and there are a total of 15,410 fics on AO3 right now so if my math is right that ship alone takes up somewhere around 22% of the fic on AO3.

The oldest fic on that site tagged for the ship is from 2006, if you go to FFN there's fic even older than that marked as a ship and tagged with both characters, might be even older stuff that isn't character-tagged (and therefore more of a pain to find).

People have literally shipped this for like 20 years and apparently the shipping fandom is in shambles over this, it's like. I'm laughing JUST DISREGARD THE MOVIE OR MAKE ALL YOUR STUFF "AU WHERE THEY AREN'T RELATED" IF IT BUGS YOU sghmghahtje

I am not a neurologist, a biologist, or a scientist. If anyone with better credentials than "obsessed with emergent properties" contradicts me, listen to them instead.

Cell membranes include little portal proteins that open under certain circumstances based on the shape of the protein and let chemicals into and out of the cell. These portals are useful for all sorts of things: managing water and nutrients, sending messages to nearby cells, serving the whims of tiny intercellular cats. Science hasn't found the tiny intercellular cats yet, but we all know they're there; the existence of a door that can be opened necessarily implies an indecisive feline.

Some protein shapes open up if the temperature is within a certain range. This means that if a cell with that sort of protein in its membrane experiences a temperature in the right range, it will move some chemicals around. This is used to make nerve cells that send a message towards the brain whenever they experience a certain temperature.

Because evolution does all its best work the night before the deadline while on a Code Red Mountain Dew bender, the opened-by-temperature portal proteins are mostly copied from opened-by-a-specific-chemical portal proteins. All of them, in fact, still open for specific chemicals, which means there exist out in the world liquids you can put in a bottle that most animals will instead perceive as "a temperature between 8 and 26 degrees" So things can get a little weird.

Temperature-opening portal proteins:

TRPA1 Opens for temperatures below 12C (not air temperature, skin or body temperature, so you might be kind of in trouble when this happens). Used by hunting snakes to detect where heat isn't so they can find prey. Feels painful in an itchy sort of way.

This one also opens for allyl isothiocyanate. Many plants have evolved to take advantage of the existence of a chemical most animals perceive as itchy pain, especially horseradish and wasabi. Allyl isothiocyanate is harmful to plants, so they keep two separate components in tiny compartments. When an animal bites the plant, the compartments break open their contents mix to create allyl isothiocyanate.

"This plant tastes like itching" is a good defense against almost all animals, but some humans have taught themselves to appreciate the taste of itching.

TRPM8 Opens for temperatures between 8 and 26 degrees. Opens for menthol (peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen) and linalool (roses, orange blossoms, basil). Feels cool or cold.

"This plant tastes like cold" is a somewhat less effective defense against being eaten than "this plant tastes like itching" but it's a more widespread defense because TRPM8-activating chemicals don't harm plants and don't need elaborate two-part storage.

TRPV4 Opens for temperatures from 27-37 C. I'm not sure what this one feels like, or if even feels like anything, since it covers normal human body temperatures. Whatever feeling we get from this one, we're feeling it nearly all the time.

Plants do make a chemical that tastes like this temperature, and it can repel nonhuman creatures with different body temperatures: allicin, the flavour of garlic. Like allyl isothiocyante, it is stored in two compartments inside the plant, and combined when the plant is bitten.

Maybe this is why vampires abhor garlic. There is a feeling that, as humans, we always have. Something we don't notice, something deeper than touch. That feel disappears forever when you become a vampire, except those unbearable moments when garlic returns to you for a fleeting moment the experience of lost humanity.

TRPV3 Opens for temperatures 33-39 degrees. Opens for eugenol, found in cinnamon, nutmeg, bay leaf, holy basil, ginger, allspice, and cloves. Feels like warmth.

Plants with high quantities of eugenol, like holy basil and Japanese star anise, are sometimes sacred to buddhists because they smell nice and bugs don't like to eat them, so you can burn them as incense without worrying about all the little crawly guys.

Humans apparently think food that tastes like "warm" is comforting.

TRPV1 Opens for temperatures over 43 degrees. (The one I was experiencing in the overheated dome, which I had never felt from air before) Opens for capsaicin, the active chemical in hot peppers. Opens for the combination of temperature and acidity of fevers and infected wounds. This one we feel as pain, as burning, as flame.

TRPV1 says: Your flesh is failing, and your doom is very near.

Humanity says: This is incredible. We are going to breed plants that cause this sensation as much as possible, and we will spend thousands of years getting it right. We are going to dry this and powder this and flake it and grill it and ferment it and eat it with everything.

And when we leave earth and go into space, we take hot peppers with us. If Kage was to design a tree house for himself, how would it look like? From the location and tree type all the way to the interior decorations.

"If I were to create a home, in a single location?" He taps the edge of his chin.

The sleeves of his kimono fall across the edge of his elbows as he ponders the answer.  Pale blue stripes encircle his wrists in a set of two solid rings. From afar they resembled shackles or bracelets.  

"Nature is not mine to touch or harm." Fox-like eyes close for a moment.

Trees are life and all life matters even if he himself leeches from the bounties of said things, to bolster his own existence. As toxic as he was in life and in his undeath, it would not be in his personal interest to take what wasn’t his to take. As this was something mortals did. 

“It is not my place to bother things that are not meant to be owned or possessed." 

A house is a thing mortals crave, something they desire to possess, to house their many things and to pass on memories from objects.

" Only mortals desire places of refuge. As all things that matter to them, are fleeting." The pause between them and the word fleeting is intentional. It held double meaning to him and possibly to others as well.

“ If I were to have a place of refuge, it would also be fleeting.”  A solemn tone seeps into his words.

“It would be pointless to remain in one location.” He waves a hand off at some imaginary creature.

If I were to remain in one place, it would go against my wandering nature. I could not learn from mortals and I could not pass on their tales to future generations. 

“Some mortals move, Some move and take only what is gifted to them in quantities they require to thrive." He points a single finger up and adds more with each description he gifts.

" Others consume and destroy all things and hold no regard for life as a whole, while others do not." Another finger is added and is in reverse of what he said before.

" Some even cultivate their lives from the earth, water and air, and remain where they rest...” A simple expression of forgiveness in his features. Again more fingers are added, each time he thinks of the people he is aware of. Until his whole hand is up and wiggling their digits in the open air.

“All things mortals make, wither and become forgotten in time. Even I; have been forgotten at times.”

Clasping his hands together and leaning forwards, closer to the stranger in question.

“I once had a home, it was long ago before mortals came to harvest the youth from my realm.” He clapped gently his hands together.

“It was made in a proto shinden-zukuri style and held little significance outside of a small clan’s land holdings.” He sways in place and his dark hair spills across pallid features.  His appearance resembles an ancient doll, the type gifted to young girls or used in shrines. Most appeared in a myriad of horror tales. Similar to an Ichimatsu doll, but more ancient and more detailed.

“ All Trees are something best left to nature's devices. Not the hands of mortals or immortals.” He leans on to a closed fist.

  Although as far as homes go, it matters not what I’d live in as living is for mortals.

“ I enjoy traditional architecture over modern society’s version of things.” He speaks in short sentences and pauses with dignity in between each thought.

“ What sort depends on my mood, after all I am a traveller and  humans are ever changing.”  He remains in his seated position with the closed fist under his chin. A single finger curling around the chin and his thumb behind it. As if he were cupping his own face with a single hand.

“I can’t think of a reason for why I would ever require to remain in one place.”

Red eyes gleam in a disastrous tint. “ Perhaps I am running from something that no longer exists?” He chuckles in a soft and uncaring way.

“ Or perhaps I am searching for something?”

I think I’m reaching that point in my writing where i have to switch projects or I’m going to just completely kill the one I’m on. Jack ignores the obnoxious spine-tingle he's sporting currently-—knows he only gets that when there's some other freak around. Not like him, no. Other fae he could pin on the spot. Everything else? A guess was as good as anything and Jack never bothered guessing. Couldn't be freaked out about answers to questions you never asked.

The half-fae nods along to the half-finished sentence. It doesn't make sense and there's lines left behind that sound like they need to be filled by more information. But, again...answers he didn't actually want on his plate. So he just nods, lets the silence drag until the guy is rambling about...sharks.

He's nodding back at him, kind of emulating Jack to appear like he's one of the denizens that resides here. He even kind of consciously tries to rework his facial expression to a thoughtful one as well.

"I am usually. I don't require what....I don't....hmm."

How to say he doesn't really NEED to breathe to survive. That sounds odd right? This conversation is already unusual, surely adding more doesn't hurt. But Kage refrains. When the atmosphere becomes too pensive, quiet, he really starts to jabber incessantly. A nervous habit, perhaps.

"I like finding sharks and trying to outswim them. There's a lot of things under the sea that are fascinating. It's very colorful down there."

"Well, he got a well deserved beating." He laughed. "Choso did a number on him."

"He wasn't much of a fighter."

"He wasn't much of a lover either until Name." He joked.

"Remember when he would constantly ask us questions about how to be a good boyfriend." She tries not to smile.

"Yeah and his fit checks to see if they were up to Name standards, it's funny to believe he wasn't interested at first."

Shoko's attention diverts to him. "What do you mean?"

"He didn't like Name." He crosses his arms, "She wasn't exactly his type, you of all people should know his type."

"Over the top models were more his type."

He laughs at her response. "Exactly imagine my surprise when you introduced him to Name pushing him to get to know her."

"She was different and I like to think that he knew too."

"It changed him in a healthy way until he got clingy and had an unhealthy obsession with her." He throws his head back. "That clearly held back Name on her career, she could've been bigger than she is already." He sighs, "A shame really, with how things came to be."

"Never understood why he cheated when he loved her so much." Shoko grabs her cigarette crushing it to the ashtray.

Do you think Sakura surpassed her teacher Tsunade? I personally think not, mainly because Tsunade is a descendant of the Senju-Uzumaki clan and has spent quite a bit of time training. We could only say this if Sakura had some of Minato Namikaze's talent.

Thank you so much for the ask. I know there's a real debate on tumblr, quora and reddit (probably twitter too, but I don't go there). Did Sakura surpass Tsunade ? It's a difficult question.

I can say for sure Naruto surpassed Jiraiya by achieving perfect sage and adding his chakra nature to the rasengan. And later, Naruto became something else when he mastered Kurama's chakra and befriended him. It's more difficult about Sasuke and Orochimaru since they don't have the same style, techniques and specializations. But it's safe to assume Sasuke became more powerful than his "master" by getting the eternal mangekyou sharingan. By the end of the manga, they at least equalled Madara and Hashirama.

But Sakura ? Kishimoto built expactations by having Kakashi & Chiyo implied she would surpass Tsunade. But... when is she supposed to do that ? When she gets the byakugo seal ? What did she do Tsunade couldn't ? Summoning Katsuyu and healing at distance ? Tsunade did. Transfering the chakra of her seal ? That's exactly what Tsunade did in the Pain arc. But if you look the other way around, what happens ?

Tsunade was able to break the susano'o twice and hitted Madara. You can't quote something similar about Sakura. She didn't even touch Madara or fight Obito. She doesn't have a feat that can compare to Tsunade's skill. Also Tsunade was cut in half and still managed to maintain the other kages alive. I'm going to state something obvious. But in this fight between the kage and Madara, Tsunade was neccessary for healing AND fighting. After Naruto got a powerup from Rikudo, was Sakura necessary to the team anymore ? Naruto was healing himself, and doing things Sakura couldn't even dream of with her ninjutsu medical.

Even in the war arc, Tsunade is more powerful and narratively more important & useful.

And the worst of it ? Being the grandchild of Hashirama has nothing to do with Tsunade's achievements. It's obvious from her fight with Madara. She didn't get his mokuton, his natural healing abilities, his sage mode or his stanima/durability. Tsunade created everything from scratch. I don't really know why her heritage is always mentionned when talking about her feats or her capabilities. Madara direspected her and called her weak for this very reason. He admitted he was wrong when she proved herself to be strong and powerful throught the technique she created. That's why she's a fucking baddass in my opinion.

something kabuto said caught my attention when i was reading kabuto vs. the uchiha brothers' fight, and it was this panel right here.

"you can read other people's feelings"

this really struck me, especially after looking back at itachi and naruto's talk in chapter 366.

itachi asked naruto, why does he care so much about sasuke when he literally abandoned him. (in other translations, he asked naruto why was he so obsessed with sasuke). naruto got mad, basically saying that for him, sasuke was like his brother and told itachi he was a better brother than he ever were.

in the next panel, itachi has a speech bubble with dots, indicating he wanted to say something but chose not to. then, he smiled as if he knew something. interestingly, kishi only drew his mouth, not his eyes.

in chapter 403, naruto thought about his conversation with itachi which made me a bit more suspicious.

itachi asked naruto, what would he do if sasuke refused to come back to the village in which naruto replies that he'll do whatever it takes to bring him back.

"you just said sasuke is like a brother to you. im asking what you'd do if your 'brother' attacked konoha."

the first thing that caught my eye was the punctuation " " between the brother and the second thing i've noticed is that it almost sounded like itachi was mocking naruto and the emphasize on " " between the word, brother, only added to the fuel.

what we know so far is that itachi could read people's emotions with his eyes. he smiled and mocked naruto for calling sasuke his brother.

in these panels, to me it looks like itachi was playing a little with naruto's feelings, trying to get a reaction out of him by asking if he would be able to stop sasuke, even if it meant killing him.

just look at naruto's face, itachi definitely touched a nerve there. but what made me pause and think was itachi's next sentence.

"can you choose between sasuke and konoha?"

he read naruto's feelings for sasuke, smiled, mocked him, and then asked if he would be able to kill him and / or if he would be able to choose between sasuke and the village they both protected. this clearly indicates that for naruto sasuke was someone so precious that it made itachi doubt and ask that question.

the real question is:

could naruto really choose between sasuke and konoha?

yes, he could, and he admitted it himself in kage summit arc. naruto searched for the raikage and pleaded him to stop sasuke's execution.

mind you, a few chapters back, he told people, for example, nagato, that killing anyone for revenge was wrong and promised them that he'll change the world of hatred. yet here he was threatening the raikage that if he doesn't spare sasuke's life, there will be war between konoha and kumo.

it clearly shows here that he was speaking more for himself instead of the whole village, who also became wary about sasuke. he was willing to sacrifice konoha for sasuke.

naruto started pleading the raikage on his knees, begging him to spare sasuke's life, but at the same time threatening him and his village, trying to justify sasuke's actions and his desire for revenge and started crying in front of everyone.

the raikage mentioned how oddly naruto acted and basically called him out by saying that it is not normal for a shinobi to beg for a criminal's life.

in the end, naruto himself answers itachi's question.

he would choose sasuke over konoha in a heartbeat.

in that chapter, itachi also told naruto how he was still acting like a child and how he needed to realize that he would be forced to make impossible decisions like this. naruto confessed that there was someone else (jiraiya), who told him the same thing, but naruto has made his choice and he won't go back on his word because that's his ninja way. itachi smiled knowingly / warmly at naruto's response. he knew naruto would do anything in his power to save sasuke, and he knew how deeply he cared for him.

also, the right person that could paint sasuke's blank canvas in every color the person wanted was definitely naruto. naruto, who never gave up on sasuke, who sacrificed himself but also konoha for sasuke, who fought everyone who spoke ill of sasuke, who was willing to die with him, who saved sasuke from the dark, painting sasuke in every color, in a new light.

Sputtering and cursing, he just sits there, his tea now all over the table and floor as his eyes wander from your face to your stomach and then back to your face again

"Pregnant?? As in "growing a baby in your tummy" pregnant??"

With a somewhat petulant expression, he huffs and nudges you back before his expression turns serious and he takes in your appearance

It is clear by the emotions flickering in his eyes that he was completely overwhelmed by the situation and not even in the slightest bit prepared

If it had been up to him, you could have waited just a little bit longer before starting a family. But, as always, life rarely goes according to plan

On the bright side, Kankuro has now a very valid excuse to put a ring on you much earlier than he had originally planned. And luckily for you, he happens to have the necessary tool practically lying around

After a much less grand, but nevertheless unforgettable proposal, you two find yourself facing not one, but two major milestones in your lives at once

However, poor Kankuro didn't think of the truck load of stress that came with this package deal and now has to bear with the consequences of his impulsiveness

You've never seen the puppeteer scrambling to get everything done like this before, considering his usually laid back demeanor. It's as amusing as it is worrying and you can't help but feel sorry for putting him through this ordeal

Knowing he can't handle everything by himself, and not wanting to put you and the baby through unnecessary stress, he asks his siblings for help

After a very long conversation, and some intense scolding from both Temari and Gaara, you and Kankuro leave the wedding planning stuff to them, so you can focus on the pregnancy and some minor wedding related stuff, like picking out the rings or arranging an appointment with the tailor

Throughout your pregnancy, Kankuro practically carries you on his hands

He'll be there every time your morning sickness hits, even though he is close to throwing up himself when the stench hits his nostrils

Or run to the nearest convenient store in the middle of the night to get everything your cravings demand

He for sure questions some of the food combinations you so happily devour. But who knows, maybe pickles with peanut butter, mustard and mini marshmallows sprinkled on top aren't half as disgusting as they sound and look

Kankuro will, if possible, accompany you to every appointment and nearly lose his marbles upon seeing his little one on the ultrasound for the first time

He may or may not shed a tear or two at the sound of the baby's heartbeat

The wedding takes place about three months before the due date

Thanks to Kankuro being rather wealthy, and his siblings wanting their brother and you to have a breathtakingly beautiful day you'll never forget, the wedding will be grand but traditional

There will be lots of different dishes from all across the lands, as well as well-wishes from all kinds of important people, like the other Kage and even the Daimyō of the Land of Wind

When Kankuro sees you walking down the aisle, he can't help but feel both giddy and nervous to the point of nearly fainting

You just look so stunning and radiant and if it weren't for Gaara, who was the man of honour, he probably would've skipped the whole ceremony bullshit and kissed you right on the spot

Once the priest asks the question of all questions and you both respond with "Yes", Kankuro throws all his restraints out of the window and kisses you like he has never kissed you before

Given your delicate state, and Kankuro's anxiety regarding your well-being and that of the baby, the puppeteer will stay close to you and ensure you rest as much as possible
