Just a Taste?
Dead dove, do not eat. Please read the content warnings!!
Contains: eating a person (technically not cannibalism because it’s a human and a god), religious themes (not Christian), long term captivity, magic, regrowing limbs, dehumanization, immortal whumpee, god whumpee, messed up mental headspace, amputation, butchery (as in the cutting of meat, not the other definition)
———
The butcher hummed to themself as they prepped their shop for the day. The morning light streamed through the windows and hit the recently wiped down surfaces, making the whole place sparkle.
They adored their job. Cutting up the meat and packaging it was strangely satisfying. And they liked how people’s face lit up when they tried the free samples of jerky and seasoned patties. How they brought joy with their cooking.
The only downside to it was their special meat. A priceless food that most people would usually only get to eat in once or twice in their lifetime if they weren’t lucky enough to have a nearby source (and very, very few did). It had to be cut fresh every day, or else it would lose its magic.
The meat of a god.
Gods automatically healed their injuries. Even losing limbs or organs would come back within a day or so. And their meat could heal anything if eaten. Lost limbs, broken bones, deathly illnesses, comas, and more. What’s more, it tasted better than anything else. It was the most exquisite, rich, juicy flavor and texture known to man.
Even still, obtaining it was quite frustrating. The butcher was insanely lucky to have their own god, but that didn’t stop how much the brat would fight back.
Of course, it was understandable that it fought. Gods were simple and stupid. They didn’t remember that their flesh would grow back or that they weren’t in danger of pain. It was very annoying. The butcher couldn’t believe that their ancestors had once worshipped these things. Eh, they had less information on gods back then. At least people knew now that it was foolish. The gods couldn’t really do anything for them.
- - -
The god tried not to wail as they heard the butcher come near the doorway to their cell. It happened every day, there was no escape. But still, every day they wished that they could just put it off for a little while longer.
Their powers had faded many decades ago, when everyone stopped believing. The only thing that remained if their godhood was their healing and immortality. They didn’t even remember their name anymore.
They hated their automatically healing. What had once been a blessing and meant that they could keep serving their humans was turned into a curse by those same humans that they had once sworn to protect.
Now they were just food. An endless supply of mythical meat.
But even still, the couldn’t fight nature. They were glad that they were still helping humans. As much as they hated the pain, at least they could fill the bellies and heal the injuries and illnesses of their humans. They were still useful to the humans.
They tried to hold onto that lovely idea as the butcher came down the stairs, saw in hand. They focused on all the good their meat will provide as their arms were chopped off and thrown into a pile. Their organs taken, their legs cut into pieces. They tried to remember that helping humans has always been their purpose, but the pain was too much.
The butcher thought that they didn’t feel pain, but no. They felt every second of it. They felt when their body was torn apart by the saw. The way the cold, stale air stung and burned. The dust and grime of their cell getting mixing with the new blood. The unending things that didn’t know how to describe; the aches that were hundreds of times worse than imaginable.
And say nothing of the regrowing process. It was anywhere close as painful to the process of losing them, but it still hurt like hell, especially since they had to grow everything back all at once.
But what hurt the most, what always hurt the most, was knowing that all of it will happen again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next. And the next.
They tried to not cry most of the time. It made them feel stupid and weak. But they caved in today and cried for a long, long time.

i know we're all sick to death of hearing about duck penises but it is genuinely so important to me that you know: male ducks regrow their penis every mating season! that is all

You have no idea how upset I am that Wookshys is such a good partner to Albina. This proposal is the nicest one so far!! It looks like he planned it out and everything, set up a cute little hot-tub date for just the two of them before he popped the question! Baz proposed to Zonovo in the freezer!! Why is Wookshys so darn good at what he does? This is tragic!
also, congrats to the happy couple and stuff, I guess

In brighter news, I have a quest that could give me a healer mech serum to cure Wendy's dementia! Huzzah!
Tumblr media
We left pacifist anxiety-ridden Vu at home to look after the kids, Andy and Henry, as well as Wendy, who is still in bed with resurrection sickness.
I like to imagine lil' Hussar Henry is upset that he doesn't get to go on cool raids despite being my third-most-competent melee colonist alongside Kawoo.

Here's everyone heading back to the shuttle after finishing their "aerial assault". I did not get screenshots of the actual fight going down because I forgot about it in my panic, but basically:
Candlelight shot her T'au Rail Rifle at the wall until the Wasters came out to fight us
Albina used her bramble maze psycast to grow a patch of thorns and slow the Wasters' down as they advanced
Hazrov, the absolute legend that she is, used her long bow to take out two of four Wasters in less than a second
Brennan used her flameball psycast to kill another Waster, but not before he'd thrown a tox grenade which caused a bit of coughing for Albina, Zonovo, Debby, and Barghest
Tamarind used her skip psycast to pop Irwin and Xanxalbur next to the last Waster who was shooting at us with a bolt-action rifle, Irwin took him out quickly but got a bruise on his torso first
Irwin then destroyed the only turret and the door of the base to see if there was anything interesting inside (there wasn't)
Tamarind used her waterskip psycast to put out the fire from Brennan's flameball
Everyone piled back into the shuttle to head home while Vu and the kids gathered the rewards inside and waited for the returning heroes
So now we have a healer mech serum! Hooray! No more dementia for Wendy.

Caught up to the fic!! Absolutely fascinated by all the queer/punk/poc history here, since I don't know much myself. Very sweet chapter as well.
Unrelated question - mostly - but why is it common fanon to depict Noir as the more scarred up of various spiderpeople? Naturally everyone has their fair share of fights, though the only we see sustaining any marks is Peter B and his misaligned nose. Personally, I've taken it as Noir Peter not healing as cleanly due to it being Spider God stuff over Weird Radioactive Healing Factor stuff. Thoughts?
thank you so much!! i’m glad you liked it, & hope the ending was satisfying for ya <3
short answer: hot
long answer, plus a map of my idea of noir’s scars: under readmore :)
i’m not a devout spidey comic/movie fan or a doctor. this is based on conjecture and minimal research!
when i came up with my unmasked noir ideas, i wasn’t influenced by fanon—i hadn’t seen any other fan art, not even when itsv came out. but i can think of a good few reasons that scarred noir is a popular headcanon: evidence of what he’s been through makes him feel more tangible/relatable, the visual difference enhances his thematic individuality as distinct from other spider-people (especially other Peter Parkers), self-consciousness can explain why he doesn’t take off his mask in itsv even around other spiders.
all perfectly valid and interesting reasons! but the first two reasons are doylist and the last one is missing a crucial question: why does he have scars? unless a wound is severe, gets infected, or gets lucky, it won’t usually scar. facial injuries especially need to be really bad to leave a mark. and of course most if not all other spider-people have the healing factor. so what gives??
i like the spider god’s curse influences healing factor idea; it opens up some nice angsty possibilities regarding an inability to Be “Fixed;” no matter how much he tries, he can’t erase/forget what’s happened to him. but i also enjoy the bandaging someone up after a fight genre of fic, and am annoyingly pedantic, so my personal working theory is that the healing factor is not a doctor with ten plus years of experience and an accurate understanding of human anatomy. when a bone really badly breaks, it has to be reset or it’ll heal wrong. to me, the healing factor doesn’t know what ‘right’ is, only ‘fast’ and ‘effective.’ it’s an accelerant, not a substitute for medicine.
so let’s establish the baseline. modern spideys either receive modern medical attention or the injury is superficial enough that they don’t require it. even poverty-stricken peter parkers get rushed to the hospital, because fictional doctors Don’t Care About The Money and/or peter is dolled up in spider gear and who’s going to ignore a visibly beat-up celebrity hero?? plus i honestly believed peter b’s nose was just genetics or smthn. my nose is misaligned and it’s never been broken to my knowledge
to compare, noir lives in 1933 and, far as i can tell, doesn’t rlly garner the same fame and respect from the public as modern spideys do. in the 30s, medicine was meh (they had x-rays but didn’t rlly consider radiation much of a threat, penicillin was still in its infancy, polio was a huge threat, etc) but was also, more importantly, far too expensive for most people suffering during the Great Depression. whatever treatment noir receives after a fight, if any, would look way different from ours. that means his healing factor, which can’t differentiate scars from normal skin or a misaligned bone from a whole one, would be inefficiently assisted or left alone. it would leave its history behind.
on the infectious disease side of things, it’s probably much easier for even noir to recover from less physical ailments like the flu and pneumonia—spider healing factor likely remembers and codes for immunity better than regular immune systems—but without modern drug therapies he’d still be worse for wear, ie internal scarring. mans would have a shorter-than-average parker lifespan if not for the pseudo-immortality of the Spider God
anyway. all this to say, here’s my personal map of parker’s scars. crop tank and daisy dukes to keep tumblr off my ass <3

(tbh this is more for my reference than anyone else’s, i’m sick of looking through my art of Just His Forearms to keep my details consistent, but maybe someone will find it interesting lol)

I feel like I'm the minority here, but I don't think trimming branches off trees and bushes or cutting the grass is actually spiritually significant to them.
Lots of folk like to ask permission of a tree's spirit before taking a limb. Which is good, being polite is always a plus. But I genuinely don't think they care. I feel like they have a relationship to branches and leaves like we do to hair or nails - a part of you that grows but doesn't actually hurt to remove.
I think it comes down to scale as well. Taking a 3in thick limb from an ancient Oak tree is going to be irksome but not detrimental, because it has 15 more. Taking a single leaf from a sapling could kill it.
Idk where I was headed with these thoughts. Concluding sentence.

thought about a scenario during the mimic incident in future of freedom
when mimic stabbed tangle in the cheek, she instinctively grabbed the arm that had the knife in hand
through pure adrenaline, tangle TWISTED his arm the other way, breaking it and causing him to let go in pain.
this leads to whisper tackling him and throwing haymakers at his face until lanolin has to pull her off

What would happen if Halcyon’s jelly arm got injured (severely or otherwise) ?
Would he just grow it back?
the jelly one? yeah. it's made out of shard energy so even if it got completely destroyed, eventually he'd build up enough energy to just regrow it in its entirety.
i was also thinking that his healing factor is kinda cracked, since he's supposed to be plantlike. so injuries mean even less to him than they do to regular shadow. not sure if it's possible to kill him at all. maybe if you vaporized him. but if there was even a little bit of him left, eventually he'd come back with enough time and sunlight

Do you happen to know any ways to torture a shapeshifter effectively?
I'm assuming said shapeshifter is gonna shift bigger/smaller to get out of any restraints? In that case...
The good ol' pitfall with spikes at the bottom, and then you gotta put like a lid on it that also has spikes. Like an iron maiden type thing. Basically just make it spikes on all sides! They might be able to make themselves real small to avoid being hurt tho 😔
But hey, while they're trapped, light a fire under that shit because even if they aren't getting poked they sure as fuck can't get away from the heat <33 or cold you could also freeze it whatever suits your fancy
Trap them completely underwater. They can turn into a fish? What if that water is acid instead, or molten metal :) And you can let that metal cool and then wow you have a fun mold!!!
I am now remembering that maybe they shouldn't die, but you can still do less intense variations of some of this stuff, trapping them in a metal box and getting it hot or spraying acid on them where they can't avoid it
They might be able to shift out of restraints, but what if I impale them on the ground with a piece of rebar, huh. what then
Give them a nice brand or marking that's visible no matter how they shift, so you'll always know it's them
Good old starvation and dehydration (and if they turn into a camel then that's just cool you got a camel hell yeah)
In conclusion, as long as you can figure out a way to keep them from getting away, you can do whatever you want, baby
