It's back everyone! Wonder Woman using "Sappho" as an Amazonian curse word is back! I'm not sure if anyone wanted this but here it is and I for one think it's hilarious.
This is a few months old actually but I finally got around to posting. Think of it as an early pride month present.

with greece legalizing gay marriage and everything i'm so tired of people diminishing queerness in greece to "oh your ancient greek ancestors would be proud ! alexander the great would be proud ! achilles would be proud sappho would be proud plato would be proud" etcetc.
queer rights progressing in greece wouldn't make our "ancient greek ancestors" proud because they had an entirely different concept of marriage than us, viewed women as objects to be sold and traded and only accepted homosexuality between men, or even more likely, a man and a literal underage boy.
gay rights in greece aren't benefiting some people who died a few thousand years ago or are Literally Fictional. greek queerness isn't just some ancient dionysian fantasy of feeding each other grapes and reciting poetry to each other by the sea. actual greek people who do benefit from this still exist. it doesn't honor some ancient guy who condoned slavery. it honors greek queer people who were out there protesting at the controversy this law raised with the church and actually made the effort to win this fight.
ancient greece isn't the epitome of queerness, not even close. absolutely in no way when it concerned exclusively just gay men. the epitome of queerness is the trans kid from my hometown who insisted on cutting their hair and dressing masculine even within their transphobic high school environment and strict orthodox family, or the woman who taught me programming who was married with children and realized she was aromantic fifteen years into marriage, or the gay punks who kept cops out of the university's anarchist hotspot.
greek queer people aren't history or mythology, and ancient greece isn't the queer utopia you make it out to be. we're still here, and we're fighting against the exact ideas our ancient culture perpetuated.

"platonic soulmate" sounds, to me, an awful lot like doing all the work of being someone's wife and then not getting all the benefits - someone to hold you when you're sad or sick or just need a cuddle, someone to do half the chores, someone who makes you feel special, makes you laugh, takes care of you, listens to you and takes your feelings seriously, who takes your side, who puts the time and effort and love in to learn to fuck you just right
i'm not sure how it's more "feminist" and "pure" to imagine a woman getting a raw deal like that. or why another man or woman (if she's queer) would put up with her giving all of that wife-y care and time and passion (for minimum 14-16+ hours out of 24, six days a week) and energy away to a "platonic soulmate"
how is that more feminist than a woman wanting and then getting what she wants and all the pleasures and costs that come with it? why is only paying the cost and not getting the full deal inherently purer?
anyway here's Wonderwall Sappho (translated by Anne Carson)
because I prayed this word: I want

Astrology Observations #4
Haven’t done an observation post in foreverrr so here we go. :)
👾 Aquarius suns whether they want to admit it or not, LOVE hearing about gossip and drama. Despite being aloof, they are still air signs. They wanna hear the tea.
👾 Moon-Jupiter aspects give big/prominent boobies.
👾 Aries suns either spend money like it’s nothing or are totally frugal.
👾 Vesta Conjunct Sun in synastry scares me a little. It can be a great aspect, but I feel more often than not the Vesta person tends to put the sun person on a pedestal and deifies them. I had this with my ex, and for a lot of the relationship I always put the blame on myself because I saw him as this person who fixed me and could do no wrong.
👾A lot of Ceres aspects (3 or more) can make someone very curvy/thick.
👾 Libra Mars got that cake.
👾 Cancer suns and Scorpio suns I just don’t dig as a couple and here’s why. I feel like Scorpios tend to use the Cancers to heal themselves and they tend to form trauma bonds with Cancers. Obviously this isn’t always the case, but I don’t see them as the perfect soulmates that everyone says they are. I think Cancer + Pisces works well and Cancers with earth signs. Scorpios I think would work well with earth signs, Pisces? Ehhhh maybe.
👾Aries moons 🤝 Scorpio moons having an intense and dark eyes/gaze (if they don’t have really dark eyes, they have a dark gaze)
👾Libra suns and risings LOVE to buy from influencers
👾Cap risings have big or unique teeth. In other words you notice their teeth right away.
👾I’ve noticed a lot of politicians and famous people have planets at 0 degrees in their chart. So do with that what you will.
👾I feel like so many Cancer suns have issues with one of their parents or someone in their family, despite being the sign of “family”.
👾 Cancer moons be giving Shakespearian monologues whenever you’ve made them upset. I would bet my left leg they’ve all had an emo phase at some point in their lives.
👾Moon Square Mars is an underrated sex appeal aspect tbh. Even if they’re not physically attractive, they still have an attractive way to them. Some celebs w this placement: Marlon Brando, Jessica Chastain, Tiffani Thiessen, James Dean, Kurt Russell, Natalie Wood, and so on.
👾Sun Square Moon individuals tend to struggle with mental health issues, some celebrity examples: Kanye West, Heath Ledger, Selena Gomez, Jodie Foster, and so on.
👾Some aspects I’ve noticed that tend to indicate a romantic relationship (or at least potential for it i.e. one person asking out the other) in the Composite chart are: North Node in the 7th, Vertex in the 7th, Juno in the 7th, asteroid Valentine 447 in the 7th house, asteroid Frigga 27 aspecting Venus, and Vertex Conj. Descendant. Some of these are from @factsrological !
👾Aries suns are noodges. LMFAO. They know how to annoy people and push their buttons.
👾I’ve noticed sapphic women tend to have Venus-Uranus, Mars-Uranus Mars-Neptune, and/or Venus-Neptune placements. Minor degrees included. Not every single woman who has it will be sapphic, but I’ve never noticed a sapphic woman without one. I’ve also noticed Asteroid Sappho making aspects to angles, personal planets, or in angular houses in sapphic women as well. Also for aspecting personal planets and angles, I’ve noticed there usually are 3+ aspects, but this isn’t always the case. For example I have Venus quincunx Neptune, Mars quincunx Neptune, and Sappho aspecting my midheaven, chart ruler (Jupiter), and Saturn. I spent over an hour looking at different charts of sapphic celebrities and that was the general consensus.
👾Gemini rising stares are underrated. Scorpio risings and Gemini risings have that same smoldering look, except Gemini risings have a more mischievous smoldering look whereas with Scorpio risings its dark and intense. I’ve mistaken Gemini risings for Scorpio risings before.
👾People with a prominent Asteroid Casanova tend to be players and flirt a lot. People with harsh Casanova aspects esp to their Mars tend to be unfaithful in relationships. I’ve noticed this more in men though.
👾Life of a Cancer stellium: Always being right about people and situations but no one ever listens to you.
👾 I’ve noticed ALOT of Capricorn suns have issues with their father. If not issues, their father greatly influences their lives for better or for worse.
👾 Pluto in the 1st all have the death stare. It’s no joke. LMAO. Every single person I know including myself have this and give scary death stares. Al Pacino has this and you’ve seen his stares in Scarface.
👾I’ve noticed Cancer placements if sleepy and not near a bed they’ll try to make their own makeshift bed, like when I was at school between classes I would line up a bunch of chairs next to each other and lay down and use my backpack as a pillow. My old boss who’s also a Cancer got a lounge chair and would bend it all the way back and put a giant cushion on it and sleep in the back room.
👾Everyone talks about asteroids conjunct your ascendant, but never talk about the oppositions. I feel like the conjunctions have more of a “comfortable” effect if you will and oppositions can be more strongly felt and are uncomfortable. Like I have asteroid Apollo opposition my ascendant, and I’ve had so many people who try to challenge me, and be intimidated by me for no reason LMAO. Since Apollo conjunct ascendant deals with power and people looking up to someone, I have people trying to “take my power away” and “fight me” for it if you will. Weird shit. Maybe I’ll do a post about it.
*** Next observations are NSFW ***
👾I don’t see Lilith-North Node in synastry talked about a lot. This in synastry means that the individuals teach each other to embrace their dark side and explore their s*xuality if the relationship is romantic or s*xual. Usually the individuals can’t keep their hands off each other.
👾Not really an observation but Eros and Lilith persona charts can tell you what you’re into s*xually. I have an 8th house stellium in my Eros chart and it makes sense, I’ll just leave it at that.
👾 A lot of Nessus aspects (3 or more) in the natal chart can make someone s*xually deviant.
👾 I’ve noticed people with their Mars at 0 degrees tend to not be very s*xual or don’t care much about it, like it happens when it happens, sort of attitude.
👾 I feel like the s*xual chemistry between Cancer Mars and Libra Mars is incredibly underrated. They’re both into soft and sensual sex, and love the intimacy of m*ssionary.
👾Asteroid Vesta aspecting Saturn may indicate losing your virginity later in life.
👾 I’ve noticed Libra placements in bed tend to be very into giving, and want to make sure their partner also finishes.
👾Having a prominent Priapus in your chart makes romantic partners want to have s*x with you right away, and this aspect typically gives a high s*x drive.
👾Scorpio moons have the bedroom eyes. They know how to undress you with their eyes, and they know how to get you to do it. They have a charm about them that just makes them irresistible. Even if they're not physically attractive, they’re just ~ sexy ~ in some inexplicable way. The people I know with these placements are constantly hooking up and/or dating people with barely any effort.
👾Lilith in the 2nd women tend to be s*xualized in addition to Lilith in the 1st women. It’s not as blatant however, it’s more hidden. For example, they won’t be ogled in the street or be asked straight up to have s*x, but they’ll get to know someone and that person will start saying s*xual stuff to them.
👾Aquarius Eros, Lilith in the 11th, Mars in the 11th, Mars Square Pluto, and Aquarius Mars are into some k*nky shit bro. I’ve noticed people with these placements having particular f*tishes.
👾Prominent Libra and 7th house placements, as well as Libra and 7th house stelliums may have clothing f*tishes, i.e. denim, leather, etc.
👾Positive Mars-Saturn aspects, Mars-Mercury aspects, and opposition Mars-Jupiter aspects can indicate a small d*ck, but all other Mars-Jupiter aspects usually indicate a larger sized one. Also both small d*ck aspects and big d*ck aspects in one’s natal chart usually indicates an average sized one. Definitely check @factsrological for more on this! I was inspired by their post.
👾Those with afflicted 8th house ruling planets tend to have a hard time “being in the moment” during s*x. They might dissociate or feel disconnected from their body. I also see this in people who have a hard time figuring out their sexuality.
👾 I remember reading somewhere that Neptune rules the org*sm so looking at which house it falls in and which planets it aspects can tell you what you’re like when you org*sm. I forget where I read it, but I’ve found it to be true. My Neptune falls in the 2nd house and I usually eat after having an org*sm. I’m also very loud as well. LMAO. TMI.
👾Mercury in the 8th house individuals LOVE to read smut and write their own. They’re more into mental stimuli than visual stimuli. They’re also really good at dirty talk.
👾Aquarius Eros love to be filmed or love the idea of being filmed while m*sturbating or having s*x. They also love the idea of phone s*x and FaceTime s*x. There’s definitely some exhibitionist shit going on here LMAO. The idea of being watched excites them.
👾Eros in the 3rd house love giving or*l.
***Back to normal***
👾Cancer Mercury and Libra Mercury friendships are so underrated imo. I know the signs are typically squared, but they're similar in a quite a few ways. For example they tend to be underestimated in how “savage” they can be if you will, they can be very ruthless with their words and tend to be looked over. They’re also both very direct people as they are both cardinal signs while sharing a “softness” to their words. Idk, I’ve always gotten along super well with Libra Mercuries.
👾Aries moons will really stalk and obsess over someone just to get bored of them 2 weeks later.
👾This one is weird but I’ve noticed that those with outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) in the 3rd house tend to have big lips/mouth or just unique lips/smiles in general.
👾Sag placements and Gemini placements in the big three tend to have the most expressive faces.
👾Leo suns, Leo risings, Sagittarius suns, and Sagittarius risings have the best hair, hands down.
👾Moon in the 1st makes anyone fairly shy. At least at first.
👾Libra Mars placements are SO moody, but boy do they know how to flirt and charm. Lmao this post talks sm about Libra Mars.
👾Talking about Lilith in the 2nd again, they’re very cunning. I’ve seen someone else mention this, and I looked into some famous people who have it, and it’s true. They’re very smart and they will do whatever they have to in order to get shit done. They’re ruthless, whether it’s for a good cause or a bad cause. They also have very strong leadership skills and know how to command people- again for both good and evil. Some examples: Pablo Escobar, Hillary Clinton, Napoleon, Winston Churchill, Jim Jones, Nero, etc.
👾Moon in the 8th individuals have soft eyes. I don’t know why but they just do. You’d think with the Scorpio energy it’d be a piercing gaze, but I’ve always seen individuals with this having a very soft gaze. They have a heavy presence yet their eyes are so soft. Majestic creatures.
👾People with Pluto in the 7th, Saturn in the 7th, an afflicted or unaspected 7th house ruler, and Scorpio in the 7th, I’ve noticed tend to get into relationships later in life, i.e. they start dating at a later age.
👾I’ve noticed individuals with Saturn in the 5th either are super into relationships or just super uninterested. I’ve seen this with siblings actually. One sibling is very selective about who they wanna date and isn’t interested in searching for love meanwhile the other one is on 8 different dating apps LMAO. However, I have noticed that this plays out in different ways. For example while this house rules creativity, she’s very creative and wants be a fashion designer, whereas he’s completely not interested in anything creative. Also she loves kids, and he wants nothing to do with them. It’s weird how certain aspects play out.
👾Mars in the 1st house overlay in synastry is no fucking joke man, I have it with this girl I like and I literally cannot speak around her because I’m in such a state of yearning. Every time we talk I just want to grab her and kiss her. Rip.
👾Speaking of synastry, 7th house synastry will really have you questioning if you should marry the person even if you don’t like them. I have this with a few people and I’ll randomly start thinking about marrying them and I’m like nope. 7th house synastry at least for me, just fucks with my brain.
👾Thinking about the time my co-worker liked my other co-worker and she tried to flirt with him by asking for a bite of his ice cream and he told her to get her own. He’s an Aquarius and she’s a Libra, I think that says enough. LMAO.
👾Unaspected moons tend to be very emotionally cold and closed off, or just have a hard time dealing with emotions in general.
👾I’ve noticed that people with an afflicted 3rd house planet ruler and/or having it aspect Saturn or Pluto tend to get their driver’s license later than most. (The third house is typically associated with cars, some say the 4th, but I think it’s the third since 3rd house energy is more on the go and 4th house energy is a home-body type of energy).
👾For some reason I always end up having beef or attracting people with Libra placements at one point or another. I think it’s because of my Mars in the 7th. Weird shit.
👾Mercury in the 8th people are OBSESSED with revenge and getting back at people who hurt them. I’m speaking for myself but also other people that I know. They just tend to think about shit over and over again. Because of this, I think this also is an anxiety placement since there’s so much overthinking and not being able to move on from past events. Myself and the other people I know with this placement all have some form of an anxiety disorder.
👾Those with Sagittarius placements in the big three tend to make friends with those of different cultures, religions, races, nationalities, etc. I’m a Sag rising and many of my close friends are Muslim and I was raised Catholic. I also have a good friend who lives in another country as well! I’ve found this to be true with other Sagittarius placements.
👾I’ve noticed women with Lilith in the 11th get hit on a lot on social media. A couple close friends of mine have this and they’re always getting DMs from thirsty ass dudes LMAO. I’ve also seen this take a dark turn and I’ve seen people they’ve met online get obsessed with them and start stalking them. Obviously if you have this placement it doesn’t mean you’ll get stalked, I’ve just noticed that these placements tend to get a lot of attention from the opposite sex online.
👾Gemini moons despite being super social and funny, there’s still a tinge of awkwardness to them? I think it’s the Mercury energy. Like they’re awkward but in a charming way? I don’t know I’ve just noticed this. They also like to make jokes during awkward moments and laugh at their own jokes if no one else laughs.
👾Those with harsh Moon-Mars and Moon-Venus aspects in their natal chart tend to attract each other like moths to a flame. People with these harsh aspects also tend to attract those with un-aspected moons.
👾I’ve noticed that those with Aquarius, Aries, and Sagittarius placements in their big 6 tend to have more radical and unconventional views about politics than others in their time. This is seen in the charts of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, AOC, FDR, Bernie Sanders, etc. Not saying every person with these placements has radical political beliefs but I’ve almost never seen a radical and unconventional politician/economist without one.

I’ve been reading If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, a translation of Sappho’s poetry by Anne Carson, and last night came upon one I had been VERY curious about how she would approach:
Tumblr media
The book. Fragment 102. On the left, two lines of Greek text:
Γλύκηα μᾶτερ, οὔ τοι δύναμαι κρέκην τὸν ἴστον πόθῳ δάμεισα παῖδος βραδίναν δι’ Ἀφροδίταν.
And on the right, Anne Carson’s translation:
sweet mother I cannot work the loom I am broken with longing for a boy by slender Aphrodite
I, of course, being Too Online that I am, am more familiar with this translation, by Diane J. Rayor:
Sweet mother, I cannot weave– slender Aphrodite has overcome me with longing for a girl.
So of course I wondered, What Is The Truth? Anne Carson provides lots of end-notes on word usage and historical context, but was fully and uncharacteristically silent on this one.
When looking into it, the word Sappho used for the object of her longing is παῖδος, paîdos, which is most commonly translated as “youth” because it’s not gendered. It can mean either a boy or a girl.
So, whether Sappho is overcome by Aphrodite with longing for a boy or for a girl is, in fact, translator’s choice. (There are reasons besides heteronormative assumptions for translating it as “boy”—though the word is not gendered, it’s cognate with a lot of words like puer that mean “son” so may have had a more masculine-as-default assumption (like a lot of European languages do), and when Sappho wrote about young women, the word she commonly used was παρθένος parthénos “young woman, maiden, virgin.” But paîs/paîdos it is not a gendered word and could be translated either way!)
And honestly now I appreciate the cleverness of ones who find workarounds to avoid gendering the one she’s longing for, to be more honest to what she actually wrote.

pick a card– which book speaks to your soul?

You read something which you thought only happened to you, and you discover that it happened 100 years ago to Dostoyevsky. This is a very great liberation for the suffering, struggling person, who always thinks that he is alone. This is why art is important.

What is beautiful is good and who is good will soon be beautiful. - Sappho of Lesbos
fuck it. higher class english woman from a jewish-italian family and her cornish childhood friend-turned-housemaid that slowly fell in love over the 1910s.
on a more personal note, i don't think i can describe the big old smile on my face when i saw the antique wheelchair from @lilis-palace and the accompanying poses. disability related cc is few and far between, and finding historical disability related cc is like finding a dolphin in the desert. disabled people have always been here, and will always be here.
we've existed throughout history! shanidar one was a neanderthal who had brain damage and possible paralysis, and is estimated to have lived to be between thirty-five and forty-five – pretty old for a neanderthal! disabled people show up often in medieval and biblical texts. the greek god hephaestus is famously described as "lame," "deformed," and/or "impaired". various disabled bodies are portrayed in ancient egyptian art. some people with developmental/learning disabilities were honored by western european courts in the renaissance and believed to be closer to god. closer to the time period portrayed in this post, rosa may billinghurst was known as the "cripple suffragette" and was involved in near constant rallying for women's rights. disabled people are overlooked in studies and perceptions of history for so many reasons; mistreatment, abuse, erasure, eugenics, different ways of categorizing and labelling disabilities, and simply being lost to time and translation. but we've always existed. for every iconic figure of disability history, there's hundreds more who simply existed and had their lives forgotten.
there's names you know like helen keller, frida kahlo, franklin d. roosevelt, and names you don't. if anything i've said at all has interested you, here are a few more notable disabled people from history and modernity to research if you'd like: brad lomex, wilma mankiller, niccolò paganini, ivar the boneless, and barbara jordan.
cc used under the cut! (if it's not linked, it's from the game)

Could I please get some fun facts about the glorious country of Greece?
Greece, or "Hellen" as her friends call her, is the country where mythology and pillars come from. Every child across the world is taught that pillars can be Doric, Ionic, or Cornthian, but not why this matters. They are also taught that Greece exists, but few learn why this is important either.
Greece includes many fictional islands such as Chryse, Phraxos, and Aeolia. It also has real islands such as Crete, where the Minoans once lived, Minoa, where some cretins once lived, and Lesbos, where Sappho lived. Sappho is regarded by historians as the first woman to have female friends, because many historians do not know what gay people are. Greece is known outside of such circles for having many gay people, being the second most popular LGBT dwelling place after only Tumblr itself.
Greece is known as the "Birthplace of Democracy" because it achieved the state in the early 1970s with something called a "Metapolitefsi," which is unrelated to the Dr. Seuss concept of the same name. The Metapolitefsi was needed after a right-wing military junta took over the country, much like in the United States in 2025.

The violet sapphic flag
Tumblr media
I decided to start work on a sapphic flag, as the original one did not feel inclusive to masculine presenting sapphics. The inclusive sapphic flag also felt too random for me to feel aligned, so I spent time researching a flag design
Excuse any spelling mistakes, English isn't my first language.
Info below. Original thread here.
1. Why violets ?
The poetry of Sapphos often included talk of violet crowns, with one of her famous poems reading ;
` … Many crowns of violets,
roses and crocuses
…together you set before more
and many scented wreaths
made from blossoms
around your soft throat… `
Violets historically are considered a symbol of sapphic love and the LGBT movement, and are seen in pop culture, such as the cult classic lesbian movie, Bound. A 1926 play also involved a woman sending violets to another, as a potential nod to Sapphos. When the poem was censored / boycotted, women would send violets in support.
To say violets were not a part of LGBT + , and primarily spaphic / lesbian history would be a false statement.
2. Why these colours ?
I colour picked from violets themselves, primarily the African and common violet. One for their inclusion of white, and the other for its range of hues from more blue to magenta. I felt they could align with the various presentations seen within sapphic culture, as I myself ID as transmasculine / presently as a soft butch. There are those who are transfemme, femme, masc, androgynous, etc., and this various spectrum of colours I feel could align with how the community is not just one, but various shade of violet.
I spent time researching LGBT history, and have come up with meanings for these specific colours. They were carefully chosen for both traditional colour meanings, as well as symbolisms that align with the LGBT+ community.
From lavander to pink, both colours have a history of representing the community, and have become symbols reclaimed. From sapphos flowers, to the pink triangle, it is important to remember our history and struggles. Pink triangles itself was used as a symbol for transwomen, as an identifier for example [ as well as gay individuals, but this isn't about them at this time ] , but have been reclaimed to represent lgbt+ rights and our struggles. It is important to never forget those who came before us.
Each colour was picked based off traditional meanings, as well as identifying traits of the community.
3. Colour meanings?
From top to bottom, these colour meanings are ;
1. Femininity, health.
Pink is associated with femininity, so this is for the purely femme presenting individuals, whether trans, nb, or however they ID. It also is the colour of love, and health [ ex , ` everything is rosy ` meaning good ] .
2. Love, compassion.
A lighter shade of pink is usually associated with love, and with love comes compassion and understanding.
3. Youth and age.
From our lives comes the fact that, we as sapphics, lesbians, etc. know that deep down, this is who we truly are. Whether you're young, or come to the realization later, we live life as our authentic self. May we grow old and happy.
4. Limitless potential.
With those who are not afraid to break the gender / sexual binary, and present in ways uncaring of societal norms.
Whether trans, nonbinary, asexual, or uncaring of labels, I hope you find who you truly are.
5. Soft masculinity.
To be soft and masculine is frowned upon in society, but some of us present in ways that we deem just right. It is an oxymoron on many levels to those who do not understand, but we are indifferent and stand tall.
6. Wisdom.
With our history, we can learn and grow, it is important to never forget it. Ever on we march to assure that we are treated as equals.
7. Serenity, masculinity.
A nod to the original flag that brought us here, while also representing the other side of the spectrum for fully masc individuals. Once again, this is for those in the trans umbrella, or comfortable in their gender.
4. Who can use it ?
Sapphics or anyone who falls into that general category.
TERF / SWERFS / anyone not inclusive of the trans community are not permitted.
Please do not use if m - spec.

Kaixo !
Would you know words in euskara to refer to LGBT people ? I'm learning the language since only one of my parents speaks it and I only had a child vocabulary, and I don't really know where I would find slangs or if basque LGBT history is totally similaire to the one of Spain and France. The dictionaries I looked at only give the formal words and I was wondering if there was others (I don't dare to ask my father so I come at you, ô stranger on the internet).
Have a wonderful day !
Kaixo!!!
Here's a little word list found online:
Words to say lesbian:
Neskazale: girls enthusiast Aluzale, motxinzale, potxorzale: vulva enthusiast Motxinjale, pikujale, txirlajale: pussy eater Lesbiana hutsa: A lesbian who has never had sexual relations with a man. Bargasta: It has been used to designate shameless women, although it does not exclusively refer to lesbianism.
Bekatorosa: it means "sinners" and it's used in Iparralde. It was used as a queer response to the exclusion promoted by the hegemonic Catholic religion.
Bilitisen alabak: it means "the daughters of Bilitis". Lesbians were also called "the sisters of Bilitis". In 1894 Pierre Louÿs published a fake collection of Greek poems called The Songs of Bilitis where Bilitis is a Sappho's student and that is the reason why Bilitis and his daughters are rightly associated with lesbians.
Joxe-Joxepa: it means John-Jean taken from the dialect of the valley of Deba.
Kuku: it means cuckoo. It is used in the area of Oarsoaldea. "Cuckoo parties" were held in the past, the term may be related to the Kuku Herri district of Azkoitia.
Lamia: character of Basque mythology. A name that gays, lesbians and transsexuals use to call themselves in good humor or jokingly.
Lesbiama: from lesbiana + ama (mom), a word game for a lesbian who is a mother.
Emakoi, emaztekoi, andrakoi, neskakoi and verb neskakoitu: they can be used to mean to have a crush on girls, to slip into lesbian attitudes and actions.

Sorgin: meaning witch. It has been used in both good and bad ways.
Soropila: proposed as an alternative to 'bollera'. Formed by sorority + opila (cake).
Tortillera and bollera: literally, omelette maker and buns maker. They're common Spanish loanwords for lesbians in many areas of the Southern Basque Country.
Ulertua, kapaza: The understanding one, the one who understands. Codified statement to indicate that someone is gay or lesbian.

Regarding LGBTI history in Euskadi, it's been linked to the one in Spain: heavily prosecuted during the dictatorship and after it - late 70s - the movement started to rally and ask for rights and legal protection. Some highlights:
1978: Basque congressman Francisco Letamendia Belzunce “Ortzi” defends for the first time ever LGBTI rights in Madrid.
1983: Legalization of the first Basque LGBTI association and decriminalisation of sex reasignment surgeries.
1994: First registration of a common-law partner in Gasteiz.
2003: Right to adoption to same-sex couples achieved in Euskadi.
2004: First edition of the International Gay-Lesbo-Trans Film Festival Zinegoak in Bilbo.
2009: Unity of Gender created at the Gurutzeta hospital (Bizkaia), formed by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, endocrine system specialists, and plastic surgeons.
2010: The Basque Parliament passes a law proposal supporting the end of the consideration of transexuality as a mental illness.

[You heard of Sappho of Lesbos, now get ready for what one historian called the Sappho of Spain. Umayyad princess and poetry battle champion, Wallada bint al-Mustakfi. A woman who lived her life by absolutely no one's rules other than her own. Born around the turn of the second millennium CE in the Caliphate of Córdoba, her adolescence was full mostly of war and strife which resulted in her eventually inheriting large amounts of money and political influence.
She used this to establish a huge palace and literary salon where she regularly invited women of all classes, from noble to enslaved to be taught poetry and let's just say the romantic arts. She became the prototype for courtly refinement, or al-zard, in Andalusian women. And that included winning poetry competitions usually reserved just for men but she would walk right on the floor, often with her hair uncovered, and wipe the floor with them.
She famously had two of her own verses embroidered in gold along the lapel of one of her coats. The first one read "by God I am fit for greatness and will stride along with great pride". And the other read "I allow my lover to reach my cheek and allow a kiss to him who craves it". She was notorious not just for leaving her hair uncovered but for dressing very evocatively, more in the style of Baghdad compared to the more conservative Córdoban fashion at the time.
She had a lot of detractors for this but one of her big defenders was Imam Ibn Hazam al-Andalusi. Which means if you don't like her lifestyle you have to go through him first. Wallada had three primary lovers, one woman and two men. She is most notoriously remembered for her tempestuous love affair with one of the great poets of this era, Ibn Zaydun. When Ibn Zaydun saw Wallada owning her opponents with sick metered rhymes, he fell instantly in love.
The two soon started exchanging love poetry but unfortunately their affair was never meant to be, for they were from rival clans. Their falling out is the stuff of many a romanticization. Suffice to say, it was a combination of political machination and the fact that she was jealous of that he kept on sleeping with other men.
Wallada never married but she eventually moved in with Ibn Zaydun's greatest rival, Ibn Abdús, who then proceeded to confiscate all of Ibn Zaydun's wealth and properties and exile him. Leaving the poet to rite nothing but homesick, lovesick poetry for the rest of his days. And Wallada even outlived Ibn Abdús, who stayed by her side for the rest of his days, despite them never being married. She died March 26, 1091 the same day the Almoravids invaded Córdoba.
Epilogue, a surreal thing happened while I was making this post. A lot of the research came from Professor Sahar Amer, who I was planning on shouting out and then I saw her last name. And the cover of one of her books and it looked familiar. It turns out I was planning on highlighting the literal sister of Ghada Amer, the Arab artist I highlighted at the end of the previous post in this series. What did they feed these women growing up, super wheaties? Follow for more women in SWANA heritage month.]
