Prompt #85 “I saved you”

Maddie had been trapped in a labyrinth chock full of booby-traps along with Phantom, though it’s powers had been temporarily blocked by the new Fenton invention she brought with her.

They brokered a truce, only to last until they made it out of the maze.

Maddie accidentally triggered one of the traps, which set off an explosion. Phantom noticed what was happening before she did, and jumped in front of her to hopefully protect her from the blast.

When Phantom jumped on top of her she thought it was attacking her, so she shot it in the chest with her ecto-gun.

It fell over backwards and turned onto it’s side to be in fetal position, showing to her that it had a large chunk of wood skewered in it’s back and was quickly bleeding out.

“I saved you” it whispered, right before going still.

Love it when each member of a team is a self-sacrificing idiot so when they're all captured and Whumper says the only way out is for one of them to be brutally tortured they pretty much compete who "gets" to be the one going through that because none of them can handle the thought of letting any of the others do it.

He didn’t realise what capture meant for his friend. For his never-smiling, always-glaring friend. His friend hid the fear so well. Hid it with sarcasm and long, trailing curses until their captor threatened to gag them.

When his friend spat in their captor’s face and was dragged away, he called out: “You can’t hurt them.”

And he believed it. They were iron-forged.

His friend didn’t come back for hours. Sometimes he could hear screams. Staccato, broken off screams, like they’d been cut off with a sharp blow.

When his friend was dropped to the cell floor—crimson hand-shaped smears left behind— the world snapped beneath his feet.

His friend couldn’t be—

That couldn’t be his friend.

Shoulders shaking as they sobbed? Their glare replaced with terror? No. No no nono—

Their captor came back for his friend. This time, he lunged against the chains. “Don’t fucking touch them!”

The screams came faster this time, dragging on and on and on.

He thought, if he could, he’d rip his ears off. If only to stop the screaming.

The bleeding screams. Open-mouthed horror. Why were the walls so thin?

His friend was kicked into the cell and they collapsed almost instantly. They didn’t move.

It was a long, quiet night.

In the morning, their captor laughed as they grabbed the bleeding shape that was their friend.

He spat the words out. “Coward! Take me instead!”

raph grew up under the protective eye of the foot, raised on endless tales of the clan's grand mission and the essential role he would play in it. his value was very clear from the moment he came into the clan's possession as an infant, given the inherent, powerful mystical energy already laying dormant inside him. though he cannot wield any magick himself, he often spends long hours meditating in the clan's shrine, bathing in mystic energy, awaiting the day he can don the dark armor and awaken their master shredder with his life force. as per clan tradition, he was never given a name and is instead officially referred to by his title-- oblation.

though he is just as devoted to his ninja training as any other clan recruit, his future role makes him far too valuable to be sent on missions or risk combat. in fact, he very rarely leaves the safety of shredder's shrine. this doesn't bother oblation, however. he is perfectly content in his role, and proud of what his anticipated sacrifice will achieve. his faith and trust in the clan are absolute and unwavering. however...

though small children are rarely recruited by the clan, there was one other. recruit calls oblation "obby." and obby calls her "cru." they met when obby was nine and cru was ten and have been inseparable ever since, training side by side. though obby is technically considered a higher rank than her, neither of them have achieved full clan membership yet. obby will not earn his place until he completes his one and only mission, and one that he will do entirely on his own-- bring forth the shredder.

(and recruit is loyal. recruit believes fully in the clan's divine mission. recruit will give whatever the foot asks of her. but as obby's promised sacrifice looms ever closer, she finds herself harboring more and more doubt.)

When the rookie Character B joins, A assumes they'll be like the others, especially when the team warns B about them. Yet to their surprise, B ignores all that and is nice to A. A isn't sure what to think, but they soon become very protective of B, enough so that they put themselves in harm's way for them...

An argument ensues. As the argument heats up, Whumpee screams out:

"BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOU AGAIN!"

That stun Caretaker. In the past, Whumpee and Caretaker had been separated for months, and they had finally reunited when Caretaker was presumed dead. Caretaker didn't even realize that it had affected Whumpee this much.

Comfort and apologies ensues, and Caretaker promises not to self sacrifice for Whumpee. They'll still protect Whumpee, but they'll learn self preservation from now on. They don't want to leave Whumpee behind again.
