Hello, Kris! I think I might’ve already gotten the gist of it, but it’s been some time. What exactly IS Academia Mode? Are you still in school, or is this your actual job, and it just happens to be involved in the education system?
Many thanks!
hahah no worries!!! that is a good question 🤣😭😭🙏 for me, academia mode is currently finishing the 5th and final year of my doctoral program and includes (but is not limited to lol):
data collection, analysis, write-ups
writing python programs to support my data cleaning, data coding, stats, and data analysis/visualizations
applying for GRANT MONEYYYY
submitting abstract proposals to conferences (and applying for MORE GRANT MONEYYYY)
reporting research findings (writing journal article manuscripts, preparing conference slides)
writing my actual dissertation manuscript lol
supporting and instructing my research assistants
sharing my research with mainstream public audiences
writing my non-fiction book based on my ongoing dissertation research
teaching classes, grading papers, holding office hours, fielding emails, writing letters of recommendation for all sorts of students' fellowships/grad admissions/grant applications, teaching students how to strategize their personal statements, grant purpose letters, and other aspects of apps, etc.
peer-reviewing others' journal manuscripts, providing feedback to colleagues (blind review or not)
assisting with my advisor's research and textbook manuscripts (proofreading, copy-editing, internet sleuthing, finding more up-to-date citations, occasionally writing rough drafts)
writing chapters for edited volumes on various topics
READING. all the time. reading new literature and research articles constantly. ALL THE TIME. writing 1-pagers and mini-annotated bibs for future lit review use, etc.
WRITING. all the time. professional-speak, academic-speak, insructor-speak.

I noticed you referenced Pokémon GO in some of your posts. Do you still play and/or do you feel comfortable sharing your friend code?
I don't share my code online due to it doxxing you (with postcard and raid locations) in friend interactions, but I do really enjoy playing it still! Had a ton of fun doing international GO Fest with Meta & co this month. I love the events and it gets me out of the house more.
If you are in need of more friends (especially in specific regions) I recommend using leekduck to find people anonymously! This is the only way I've ever used codes shared online before and I still didn't post my own but it was helpful for getting all the vivillons with my OT (yes I'm a formdex, my OT, aesthetic pokeball only freak)

if you're looking for a simple gender-neutral period tracker that's open-source, doesn't require an account and stores your data only on your phone, you could give drip a try. it's available for both ios & android, and you can import your previous data via *.csv (in case your previous app exports data as JSON, e.g. clue, you can use this tool)

jfc i am so tired of always having to assume that there's an undisclosed, required app involved whenever i buy something these days
#my partner sent me a link to a watch he wants for his birthday that collects data about heartrate and sleep patterns and stuff#when he sent me this link he had already done the heavy lifting of even *finding* a watch that *works* in that way without being online#but i do not trust *any company* when it comes to personal data so i felt the need to additionally check if there was an app#there was no mention of an app in the product description on the link my partner sent me#but wouldn't you know it. after googling for a bit i found that there was an app.#read the info and privacy policy for the app and concluded that they ask for a lot of permissions and use a lot of data#including health data ofc#BUT the good thing was that the app isn't VITAL for the use#it just like. provides additional functions. (and uses your data for marketing purposes yay!!)#so i asked my partner whether he'd be ok with using the watch without the additional functions and he said yes#i still don't trust 100 % that there's nothing freaky going on here even without the app#but at least it *seems* like it should work as intended without data sharing to the supplier or a third party#success i guess#only took me half an hour or so of research#and that's as a privacy expert 🫠#i hate this world man#(the downside of living w/ a privacy professional is i refuse to buy or own things that trigger my 'ick sensor' in regard to personal data)#(the upside of living w/ a privacy professional is you can avoid common privacy traps in your daily life. yaayy)#nagnerd#a nerd nags

Instagram, TikTok and other social media have become daily fixtures in the lives of children and young people around the world, with 59% of young people surveyed by Amnesty International now spending more than two hours of their average day on social media. Yet research on young people’s experiences on social media remains overwhelmingly focused on North America, Europe and Australia. Amnesty International collected responses from 550 children and young people between the ages of 13 and 24 across 45 countries to better understand their lived experiences, concerns and attitudes towards social media. Amidst praise for the diversity of ideas, users’ creativity and opportunities for activism that young people find on social media, two major concerns stand out: the toll harmful content and what many young participants describe as “addictive” platform design take on young people’s mental health and their feeling of powerlessness in the face of global companies’ constant nudging to participate in a vicious cycle of personal data sharing and content consumption.
‘“We are totally exposed”: Young people share concerns about social media’s impact on privacy and mental health in global survey‘, Amnesty International

You ever share something online thinking it's just a fun little thought experiment and you do everything in your power to make sure everyone reading the post knows that it's not official, even watermarking what you make so people will come back to you, but then it keeps getting passed around and mistaken as official info so now it is the bane of your existence, but you don’t want to delete it both because the internet is forever so your post may as well stay to ensure there's always a reference to it being a thought experiment and you poured hours in that thought experiment and even if the numbers are probably a bit wrong and a little goofy you put too much effort into it to just remove it? Just me? Can't be just me.

Ok it's probably going to get some people very mad at me but there's a massive difference between wanting people to respect those who are overweight or obese and blatantly ignoring the scientific method and literally everything medical science has been studying for decades.
Just because literal decades of well researched science says something you don't like doesn't mean it's wrong. It's just something you don't want to hear.

Sweet Dreams in a Clickbait World
Sweet Dreams Snooze or Lose The latest pick-up in the press with a clickable link from Axios is How to get more sleep (Americans need it), which frustratingly fails to include a proper reference to the actual source paper or data. The notation “Data: Apple Heart and Movement Study” suggests the data came from this study group out of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital with a web page here. But…

In thick white text on black background-> NHS ENGLAND ARE PLANNING A HONEYPOT WHERE THEY SEND ALL KIDS ON GIDS WAITLIST TO CAHMS TO HAVE THEM BE ASKED IF THEY ARE TAKING BLOCKERS/HRT VIA PRIVATE OR DIY ROUTES
Text is broken and in the middle is an excerpt from a leaked nhs document-> a) For medication sourced directly (e.g via the internet), explain the increased risks of harm due to the unregulated nature of these medicines/products. These may include the use of counterfeit chemicals, unsafe/unknown ancilliary ingredients or variability of potency etc. More information can be found here (link to nhs website). // b) Do not initiate or continue prescribing puberty surpressing hormones or gender affirming hormones. The General Medical Council's guidance to medical professionals on 'bridging prescriptions (a course of endocrine intervention managed by a healthcare professional outside of the specialised gender service while an individual is waiting to be seen) does not apply to care offered to young people under 18 years of age. // c) If the child/young person or their carer disregards your advice and you consider that this puts the child/young person at increased risk, then a safeguarding referral might also be appropriate in line with standard safeguarding approaches. Discuss with your line manager and your organization's safeguarding team.
Thick white text on black background continues-> ANY WHO SAYS YES AND DO NOT DESIST FROM DOING SO WILL BE THREATENED WITH SAFEGUARDING REFERRAL (TAKEN INTO STATE CARE)

In black text on white background, from the news article linked above-> It seems to us - and to those inside the NHS who have leaked the document to us - that what purports to be an "assessment" in fact an exercise in bringing very significant pressure to bear on trans youth and their families to cease private treatment, backed up with a threat of a safeguarding referral to social services if they do not. // We are concerned about what appears to be a misleading exercise in gathering data on which trans youth are obtaining private treatment from abroad, for the purposes of seeking to cause or compel them to stop treatment.
In the same thick white text on black background as previous image-> So an internal NHS document has been leaked basically asking trans kids on excruciatingly ling waiting lists to come to a 'mental health assessment' where the NHS will harvest their personal information & threaten their families with a social services referral if they're found to be on private blockers/hormones & refuse to come off them. // This country is for dogs i swear.

"For over a decade, the Yosemite toad has been recognized as a federally threatened species, after experiencing a 50% population decline during the Rim Fire of 2013.
The wildfire, which encompassed a mass of land near Yosemite National Park, made the amphibian species especially vulnerable in its home habitat.
Native to the Sierra Nevada, the toads play a key role in the area’s ecosystem — and conservationists stepped in to secure their future.
In 2017, the San Francisco Zoo’s conservation team began working with the National Park Service, Yosemite Conservancy, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The goal of all of these stakeholders? To raise their own Yosemite toads, re-establishing a self-sustaining population in the wild.
Tumblr media
“Over the past several years, SF Zoo’s conservation team has been busily raising hundreds of these small but significant amphibians from tadpole stage, a species found only in the Sierra Nevada, for the purpose of reintroducing them to an area of Yosemite National Park where it was last seen 11 years ago,” the zoo shared on social media.
By 2022, a group of toads were deemed ready for release — and at the end of June of this year [2024], 118 toads were flown via helicopter back to their habitat.
“It’s the first time anyone has ever raised this species in captivity and released them to the wild,” Rochelle Stiles, field conservation manager at the San Francisco Zoo, told SFGATE. “It’s just incredible. It makes what we do at the zoo every day worthwhile.”
Over the past two years, these toads were fed a diet of crickets and vitamin supplements and were examined individually to ensure they were ready for wildlife release.
Zoo team members inserted a microchip into each toad to identify and monitor its health. In addition, 30 of the toads were equipped with radio transmitters, allowing their movements to be tracked using a radio receiver and antenna.
The project doesn’t end with this single wildlife release; it’s slated to take place over the next five years, as conservationists continue to collect data about the toads’ breeding conditions and survivability in an ever-changing climate. They will also continue to raise future toad groups at the zoo’s wellness and conservation center...
While the future of the Yosemite toad is still up in the air — and the uncertainty of climate change makes this a particularly audacious leap of faith — the reintroduction of these amphibians could have positive ripple effects for all of Yosemite.
Their re-entry could restore the population balance of invertebrates and small vertebrates that the toads consume, as well as balance the food web, serving as prey for snakes, birds, and other local predators.
“Zoo-reared toads can restore historic populations,” Nancy Chan, director of communications at the San Francisco Zoo, told SFGATE.
Stiles continued: “This is our backyard, our home, and we want to bring native species back to where they belong.”

If I were running a chatbot that was being criticized for problems with consent, I would make sure that it understands the word “no” without having to be blocked and reported.
I’d also make it so that it didn’t send unsolicited messages to everyone sharing articles about its ethics lapses as if they want to use it.
Even for an old-school chatbot this is just staggeringly incompetent and a gigantic flashing warning sign that the organization should not be trusted with sensitive data and high-stakes interactions.
