A Tad Discussion

So, I kind of wanted to do this post for a while now. I was just never sure how to collect my thoughts about it because Tad as a character is very... interesting to me, specifically his motivation for why he hates Eli and his hatred for his dad despite acting almost just like him. So, sit back and relax as I try my best to understand and explain Tad.

Tad himself, as a character was obviously not very well-liked when he was first introduced. Despite the fandom being really small at the time our tiny but mighty fandom had a bone to pick with Tad because he's just Twist but almost worse. It's like those goofy fanfic where they're like and then it turns out that along Dr. Blakk had an evil son or daughter. Like it's just really lazy and we already had a character that the fandom really liked do this plot so much better

But I don't want to talk about Twist's motivation (I'll save that hopefully for another day), but I want to talk about Tad. First of all, his motivation for hating his dad really doesn't make sense... at first, I will explain. For example, he constantly says that he's picking up where his FEEBLE father left off and Tad I don't know if you've SEEN your father but that man is not feeble for the life of him lol.

But he continues to go on to insult him calling his dad a fool and even when Boss Ember calls him junior since I assume his full name is Thaddius Blakk Jr., it really pisses him off and his points his blaster at Boss Ember saying he's no one's junior. Speaking of his name it's interesting that he goes by Tad and not Thad. I guess you could argue that he was trying to hide himself from Eli and the Shane gang but considering how much he hates being called junior I feel like that's not the case.

It's just strange. He's really pissed off at being called Junior and acts like he doesn't want to associate with him but then ACTS just like him. I mean not completely, he doesn't ghoul Peiper which is better than you can say for Twist, but it's almost like Tad knows the ghouling is wrong. Maybe that was a way to differentiate from his father. I know they say it's to control the ghouls better but still

Either way, what does this leave us with. A boy who had a horrible life on the surface that acts like his dad but doesn't want to associate himself with him and who literally says that he wants to be twice the man he was. Sounds like bad writing sure but I think it's something different. I think Tad is overcompensating.

I mean think about it. Imagine you're Tad. You have a horrible life on the surface and your father either left you or doesn't even know about you only to spend all his time in this fantasy world building a business and a life that you're not a part of.

Only to later find a map or create a map I can't remember which one it was that leads to this underground, and you think I'm gonna go see my dad only to find that he was defeated by as he says "A kid my own age" I would be pretty mad too and it's clear just like Twist, Tad is taking out his problems as his frustrations out on Eli. Also, I will say I feel like the "evilness" from Tad came outta no nowhere or it could just be bad writing.

Either way, I still think he's overcompensating for his daddy issues. Everyone does something different. Some run away and become the protector of the world, some steal treasures, some become their enemy's associate, and others resurrect their father's business lol

But to finish off, Tad clearly wants to show the world or eh Slugterra that he is clearly better than his dad and a better villain. He's kinda like, oh, you were a businessman and left me or didn't know about me well, I’m gonna be a better businessman than you ever were, and I’ll prove that leaving me behind was a mistake. He hates his father so much that he wants to prove to everyone and himself that he can be better than him and kind of show off that he never needed him. At least, that’s the kind of vibe I get from Tad.

I mean in the end, I'm probably just reading waaay too much into this character. More likely than not the writers probably were just like ooooo how cool would it be for Blakk to have a son that also lived on the surface and then betrays the gang... as if we haven't seen that before. Rip Twist

Pretending Slugterra has similar guardianship laws to the surface, in most places you have to be at least 16 to be released from parental control.

Eli is only 15 at the beginning of the series so a totally viable strategy for Blakk would've been to just adopt Eli.

On Ghouling

Something that's always tickled my brain is how most ghouls are feral and uncontrollable, with two major exceptions. Loki and all the slugs in "What Lies Beneath," with a focus on Burpy.

Loki is the first ghoul we can see that is capable of self-control. He even behaves like a normal (if slightly more malicious) slug. The only real clues we get that he's a ghoul are that his "illusion" showed up on camera and that he wouldn't touch Doc.

The other slugs, especially Burpy, in What Lies Beneath, behave similarly. We even see Burpy act like himself, just more unhinged. I have a theory on why this is. With Burpy, he was willing to undergo the ghouling process and didn't flinch once. My theory is that if a slug is willing to be ghouled, it can resist the mind-altering effects of Dark Water to a degree. I imagine the process is very traumatic for the poor guys, so maybe that mindless savagery is a coping mechanism for what was done to them. Since Burpy and Loki didn't fight it, they came out fairly unchanged, at least in the personality department.

I feel like I should make this clear.

Yes Junjie was the dark slinger for 20 years old making him in years being Alive 36

And Eli being 16 means I shouldn’t be shipping them.

But how I perceive it. Junjie didn’t age mentally or physically and the Goon controlled him for those 20 years. Junjie showed no way of fight to gain control (unlike Eli) so I believe he was in a limbo state. Not aging.

So to me Junjie is still a child. I get why people don’t ship it especially because Junjie seems more “mature” (main reasoning) but have a look at Junjie‘s culture growing up. He was destined and trained since he was young to be the Eastern Champion taking on the trope of “growing up to fast” and not really getting to be a child

“He’s a mentor to Eli, it’s predatory”

I get where some of you interpret this idea, but Junjie at 16 (before the attack on the eastern caverns) he was a mentor towards the younger kids of the east, as he matured faster then the rest of the gang would of had too. Taking on more responsibilities when Eli had only been living in Slugterra for a year.

I’m not saying you don’t have to change your view, but look at it from a different angle

Eli Headcanon - Rain

He just loves the rain and he misses it so much when he's in Slugterra.

But then, a few days after the whole Twist incident happens, Eli suddenly remembers Pronto packing an umbrella for the mission.

An umbrella? But it doesn't rain in Slugterra.

So he asks Pronto about it.

"Why do you have an umbrella?"

"Pronto always carries one in case of unexpected waterfalls and slug migrations."

"Oh... Wait, slug migrations?"

"Oh yes, Tazerlings, Aquabeaks, Flaringos, and Tormatos migrate together every few years. If there's enough of them, they make this weird puffy... cotton ball, and then water falls!! Pronto has gotten wet too many times because of them! That is why Pronto carries an umbrella."

"Rain..."

"But it's nothing compared to Downpour Cavern! Water falls from the Caverns ceiling ALL the time!! Pronto doesn't know how its residents just live there as if nothing happens!!"

"How does the rain—water fall??"

"Some is from the stalagmites, but it's mostly the annoying amount of fire and water slugs that live there! Pronto hates the humidity!"

And so Eli going to Downpour Cavern and just absolutely loving the fact that in one way or another, it rains in Slugterra...

Reporting three days into my Slugterra marathon to which I can't escape from.

It's funny how I Can't be able to see any pair of characters in this series and ship them, the series itself isn't romance-centered and there's enough Lore and action scenes that take My attention.

I thought maybe I could ship Blakk and one of his assistants like El Diablos Nacho or that one red haired guy that appears every now and then, maybe even with Will Shane. I also tried getting the ship vision for other characters but I can't get it, Even some that would attract me like Diablos Nacho x Brimstone, Eli Shane x Twist still need time to boil in my brain.

So in shipper desperation I searched and searched for any pair that would look cute kissing.

Slugs, Gender, and Slugterra ⚧️

Okay this might be like a weird post but I’m just curious if anyone knew about this but I just learned recently that slugs are hermaphrodites and that they produce both male and female parts and some species can even fertilize themselves as shown picture that I put below.

So of course this this got me thinking 🤔 I assume slugs in Slugterra came from the ones on the surface which means that they must have the same reproductive system as slugs on the surface. Like evolution doesn’t work that fast so they can’t be that much different than regular surface slugs. Sure Infurnues live for like 2,000 something years since Juju was alive with Yang in the eastern caverns but they never in the show say how long the slugs live for

So if the only thing evolution did was lengthen a slugs life then it probably means that Burpy, Juju, Joules and all the other slugs probably have male and female parts and I guess just choose the gender they assign as?? Which I swear is like the sign of an advance society 😅 but that’s not the point or really thing I was questioning…

If all slugs in Slugterra are born with both male and female and that’s just a causal thing for slugs to have, do you think the people of Slugterra are more or less accepting of the LGBTQ+ community than the surface?

If slugs just causally have both parts and most people have slugs in some way then maybe if a person in Slugterra has both parts, change their gender, or date someone of the same gender, they wouldn’t care because it’s so common in their slugs that they don’t think about it

OR maybe because some people think slugs are just ammo they see it as a primitive thing for someone to change their gender and be gay

I guess it would depend on each person but I just wonder what the vibe is in Slugterra 🤷‍♀️

What I wasn't prepared to learn - at the ripe age of 22, is that apparently JUNJIE IS CANONICALLY QUEER?????

For some context, the only reason I learned this was cause I randomly stumbled onto some Slugterra shipping discourse on tiktok - long story do not ask - and it was like oh god you can't ship Eli with Junjie, Junjie is THIRTY FIVE - and number 1. I did not realize people shipped characters in Slugterra bc last time I was aware of this show I was 13 and stupider than most and 2. THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN HE'S 35????? HE DID NOT LOOK LIKE A 35 YEAR OLD, but if he is Dear Lord 3. and then I GOOGLED IT and y'all gave me a heart attack, I think Junjie is still 15, I'm SORRY but if you get mind controlled for 20 years at the age of 15, and then have no memories of those 20 years, and your body also didn't age during the 20 years you were mind controlled, functionally, you're probably a 15 year old that got yoinked 20 years into the future??? I wish we had more insights into Slugterran law beyond the episode with the corrupt judge. It would have been interesting to see how different caverns approached their laws and how inter-cavern law worked.

There could have even been an episode on how the Shanes fit into the Slugterran legal system since they are the protectors of the 99 Caverns.

Eli is Canadian?!?

It's never outright canonically stated, BUT Slugterra IS a Canadian show, AND Eli's va, Sam Vincent, is Canadian.

The script has Canadian lingo in there, easiest example of this is Eli calling his slugs "bud". Oh! In ROTE, one of Will's security questions mentions a cabin they used to go to, Canadians are notorious for going to their cabins for vacation!

(Do you know how many of my classmates went to cabins? I was so jealous lol I want to go to a cabin)

Sooo it's 99% likely he is Canadian. Aaaand I'm Canadian and I'm biased soooo, Eli's Canadian for me lol (there's rarely any Canadian mc imo lemme have this 😭)

I like to think he's from the GTA area, from Hispanic heritage.

It's why I included hockey and lacrosse in my poll yesterday, Eli is Canadian, and no one can tell me otherwise 😤😤😤

Ever think about how one of the rooms in the Shane Hideout technically belongs to Will,

So, like when Eli first scoped out the place, he probably stood in what was once his dads room for a solid five or ten minutes, taking in the dust covered room and all its stuff before getting the gear Will had left him.

And then when Trixie, Kord and Pronto like officially moved in and where claiming rooms for themselves they also saw what was once Will Shane's room, and how Eli just kinda avoided it by sleeping on the couch.

(because I hc there are like four actual bedrooms in the Hideout.)

And it takes like, a month to get Eli to not only clean out what was once his dad's old room but actually move into it himself?

And lest not think about the potential box/album of photos Will probably kept under his bed or something like that, and how those photos were of him and his son. (As well as some other personal items)

Let's not think about how Eli probably had to go out back and have a little cry before mustering up the energy to finish cleaning, out the room that was once his dad's, and is now his.

Let's not think about how Eli probably had to hide a lot of his dad's things, not just because he didn't want his friends to find them, but because they where to painful to look at.
