Day 615
I forgot until now that about two weeks ago I was playing a game called Doronko Wanko. It’s a strange game, not just in premise, but in who designed the game. The game was developed by Bandai Namco Studios, but published by Phoenixx Inc, instead of Bandai Namco themselves.
It’s unusual for two reasons, one, Bandai is the company most well known for Tekken (and maybe Soulcalibur back in the mid 90s to early 2000s), along with a bunch of anime franchises, and two, the game was for free.
Completely free, not even any microtransactions as far as I can tell. It is just a cute, short game about a mischievous muddy pomeranian who gets a whole clean house dirty.
That it’s, that’s the game.
You play a pomeranian and the purpose is to get the whole house full of mud and paint, racking up a huge cleaning bill in the process. It’s an adorable, silly game with game mechanics so easily learnt and well built tutorial, that even if you forget to change the language to English, you can still play the game. The gameplay loop is so tight that even though the game is only an hour long (less than that if you sped through it) it’s enjoyable from beginning to end. It came up with a silly game mechanic and then proceeded to execute perfectly.
It’s just really weird that it’s Bandai Namco, who have been in the gaming sphere for a long time. If this game had been released by a small indie dev, for free, one would assume it was just someone’s pet project. Though it does make me wonder, if maybe it was still a pet project, or rather a training project.
There has been some talk about the lack of learning opportunities within the very large gaming studios. Gaming studios that tend to focus on AAA games with incredibly large scopes and very specific genres, or franchises. As a result, there isn’t a chance to learn new skills in making games for both new developers coming into the field and veterans in a way that doesn’t have a high cost. Making a smaller game like Doronko Wanko gives developers a chance to learn new skills without it costing a larger game. And if they happen to make a new franchise as a result of excellent feedback, all the better.
This could be very well a test run for another type of game. Or maybe, one day we’ll just get a longer game about a muddy pom out to make a mess of everything. Not sure how you’d make a longer game out of that, but it sounds like fun.

Just want to take a sec to recommend a great game I got to play tonight: I Have the High Ground
It's a two-person duel of banter and posturing (and capes!) that comes _before_ the climactic duel, and it's just a lot of fun to create two characters and see them each trying to get the upper hand. Mechanically not too complex (some basic rock-paper-scissors, with embellishments) but it does a really good job of creating a tense and dynamic mood, and I think it'd be good even for people who haven't done a lot of free-form RP before.
Tonight, I played a game where we were two allied-turned-rival magicians, and our 'academic' debate over whether or not there was some fundamental bit of reality that could not be altered by magic (and also our unresolved romantic tension) brought us slowly but inexorably to the brink of magical war with each other -- lots of fun to just gradually wind each other up. :)
So yeah, I'd highly recommend, and also will be looking for a chance to play this again some time.

We all know that Astarion has some of the best lines in the game but nobody - NOBODY - told me how softly Gale's VA delivers that "I forget my Goddess" line... the breathlessness? the yearning?? hello

The world needs more Yue and Zuko friendship, I squeal just thinking abt the parallels. They deserve a life changing field trip together and if u have abt ideas I’m all ears 👀
Hiii anon this ask fermented in my inbox and in my brain for so long,, so take this??? Post canon yue lives/no war au arts?? Anyway aside from the Parallels and their political position & their duty before hoes grindset I think they could learn a lot from each other. With zuko learning the gift of patience & diplomacy from yue & Yue learning that allowing yourself to feel anger and speaking up can actually be Good.
Tumblr media
anyway hypothetical life changing trip outcome: zuko takes an intro gender studies class and yue says fuck

Hi sorry I need to do some more Pokemon posting bc this is the funniest shit. the cute-looking Pokèmon TCG series is making "TM10" part of its branding. Like, TM10 from the games - its the TM for the move Hidden Power, thats cute! Its reflecting the main character discovering herself in the same way the move works in the game, what a cute little detail!
Tumblr media
Except uh. Just one problem.
Game Freak in all their brilliance removed Hidden Power from the franchise four years ago in Generation 8* and its still not able to be used in Scarlet and Violet. Its not just that you cant teach it to Pokèmon anymore, you straight up cannot use the attack even if you trade in Pokèmon from older games who know it. Its like a banned technique.
Tumblr media
So then that begs the question – if the TCG show is gonna be referencing TM10 this much, but TM10 *isn't* Hidden Power anymore, surely that means TM10 is another similarly inspiring attack - Stored Power, or Calm Mind, or Smart Strike?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, depending on if its Gen 8 or 9, I hope the kids will have fun Discovering Their Own Magical Leaf and/or Discovering Their Own Ice Fang. Truly inspiring words. love how well managed this franchise is

Day 428
I told my PIlates instructor the week previous that I don’t play scary video games because I like to sleep at night. However, I forgot to mention that I do like atmospheric creepy video games to a degree and in fact will purposely play them during the Halloween season.
And when you play games that are Halloween-themed or work well with Halloween and aren't technically scary, what you look for in a video game might be different than what you normally would look for in a video game.
The Hidden Paw series by Manic Hyena is nothing to write home about. It is a hidden object game without a story where you look for cats hidden around 3D dioramas on different islands. The reason why I bought this whole series was just because it was a hidden object game where I could look for cats in 3D spaces that I can affect by clicking objects. However, as I mentioned in the past about Summer Paws, it’s amazing to watch the improvements someone makes as they make sequels to small games.
I played Hidden Paw Mystery because I suspected it would be a good one to play for Halloween. I was not disappointed in that. Islands full of pumpkins, graveyards, ruins and one really fascinating one that had stone eyes carved in the mountains that moved to watch your mouse were all really good scenes. I also cannot imagine the coding it must have taken to get the eyes to work properly.
Sometimes, a game doesn’t have to be this huge blockbuster thing, or do something that has never been seen before. Sometimes, it can just do what it says on the tin, and as long as it does it very well you can’t really complain about that.

Service Robot Magic
Inspired by some conversation while doing other game stuff with friends...
Service Robot Magic
You are robots on a small, distant colony planet, tasked with operating the civil service for your human masters, but now something magical has happened… Strange powers have awakened among your robotic brethren, and the time for change has come.
As a robot, you have three Features – Service, Robot, and Magic. Chose one of these to be +1, and another to be -1; the remaining option will be +0.
Service – What do you do for the human society? (Examples include: postal delivery, taxi driver, doctor, secretary, ship repair, etc.) If this is +1, how do you perform better than any human person at your task? If this is -1, how does your service role restrict your other activities?
Robot – What is your robot body like? (Examples include: humaniform, tiny, heavily armored, modular limbs, networked cognition, etc.) If this is your +1, what hidden functions have you concealed? If this is your -1, how are you unsuited to interacting with environments built for humans?
Magic – What strange psychic, super-science, or alien capability have you manifested? (Examples include: elemental control, teleportation, precognition, human emotions, vampirism, etc.) If this is your +1, how has practice honed your ability? If this is your -1, what keeps this power beyond your control?
Decide among your fellow robots what your goal is. Do you want to escape for a robot holiday before returning to work? Do you want to lead an uprising and overthrow the human masters? Do you seek the truth about where your space-magic has come from? Decide among yourselves something that everyone is interested in.
Whatever your goal, you will need to overcome challenges to achieve it. The player who most recently thanked a machine goes first. That player decides what the first challenge on the way to your goal will be – the challenge can be anything you like, as long as overcoming it will bring the robots closer to their goal.
Then, all the players together decide how the robots will tackle it: via Service, Robot, or Magic. Each player should make at least one suggestion for their robot’s preferred solution (using any Feature they like), and then everyone should agree on which plan they like best – but all robots will participate and roll the same Feature to determine the outcome. If you decide on Service, each robot will be bending the parameters of their work; if Robot, each robot will use an aspect of their metal bodies; and if Magic, each robot will use their weird powers to help out.
Each player rolls a d6, and adds their modifier for the chosen Feature – on a 4 or higher, the ploy was a success! Describe how your robot succeeded in their plan. If you rolled a 7 (via your +1 bonus), describe a bonus that you achieved, and count an extra success!
If the roll was a 3 or lower, however, your robot failed. Describe what kept you from success. If you rolled a 0 (from your -1) describe how your robot caused more work and trouble for everyone. (Do not count an extra failure.)
Take note of your successes and failures as a group – if there were more successes than failures, you can consider this challenge overcome! If not, consider what new obstacles might be in your way…
The next player should then set another challenge. Everyone will again make a suggestion for their preferred solution – but you cannot use the Feature that everyone just rolled! Once you have chosen a plan, roll and describe the next set of outcomes, again noting your successes and failures.
The third player will set another challenge – this time there is only one final Feature to choose from, so everyone should propose a plan on how to use it, and then choose the most interesting option. Again, roll, describe your outcomes, and note your successes and failures.
Now that you have overcome three challenges (or not) consider your robot’s goal. Do you think they have done enough to achieve it? If so, congratulations! You’ve won!
If not, consider if you want to keep playing. If you do, go through another set of three challenges, and try to get closer to your aspirations. If not, talk about what your robots will do now. Do they resign themselves to endless servitude? Do they give up on robot solidarity and decide to go it alone? Or do they bide their time and wait for another chance?
If you do anything with this, I'd love to hear about it! Also, apologies for rough edges because I didn't really do any editing. :)
