appreciation: you’re cool. i loved your microfic about harry and the airplane <3333333
hi anon, you're so sweet!!! i think you're cool too <3 i enjoyed this one so much, i hope you do too x
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” Regulus groans, hands running over his face as he takes in the sight before him; Spiderman standing on top of his now crushed car, some sort of monster or alien or something with far too many arms beneath him.
“Oh, hey!” Spiderman says, waving a hand up in greeting like he hasn’t just ruined Regulus’ morning.
“Don’t oh hey me, that’s my car! How am I supposed to get to work?”
“But – are we just ignoring the fact that I just defeated an alien?”
“Are we just ignoring the fact that you just destroyed my car?”
“Oh,” he says, and Regulus can almost imagine a pout on his face beneath the mask. “How can I make it up to you?”
Regulus mulls it over for a second, holding his chin up as he says, “Show me your face.”
Spiderman clutches his stomach as he bends over laughing, loud booming laughter that Regulus very much likes the sound of.
“No? Do you not understand the concept of a secret identity?” he says, waving down at his red and blue suit.
Smirking, Regulus says, “Alright then, take me on a date.”
Regulus is expecting more laughter, but Spiderman is quiet as he stands up straight like he’s genuinely considering it. He really had meant it as a joke, but he would gladly go on a date with him if it meant he got to hear more of that laughter.
“Yeah, okay,” he says eventually, and Regulus is sure his eyes must bug out of their sockets. Did he actually just say yes?
“Okay. Tonight? You’ll have to pick me up because, well,” Regulus pauses, gesturing to the wreck that was his car, “I no longer have a car.”
It’s a bit of a strange sight, watching a superhero pull a phone out of their pocket, presumably to check their calendar.
“Does seven work for you?”
“It does,” Regulus smirks.
“Alright, I’ll see you at seven! And, uh – sorry again. About your car,” he says, scratching awkwardly at the back of his neck, before giving Regulus a quick salute and turning on his heel.
He’s almost around the corner when Regulus calls out, “Hey Spiderman!”
“Yeah?” he says, pausing in the street to look back at him.
“I sure hope you’re not going to show up wearing that!” Regulus teases, knowing that he got exactly what he wanted; the date is just a pleasant bonus.
Spiderman looks down at his suit and groans, “Oh fuck.”
follower appreciation – drop me a prompt <3

2019 & 2010s Best/Worst
Because I like lists and cataloguing the dumb shit I cared about. As my brother once said after seeing and reviewing NOW YOU SEE ME on a lazy Sunday, ‘Some would say it was a waste of time, others might say it was a colossal waste of time.’
I’ll admit, it’s a bit over-the-top. Particularly including the Pats, but yeah, in the Tom Brady era that started when I was 14 as a Freshman in high school to 33 years old now and wrapping up soon-ish (?), there’s not a chance in hell I’ll care as intimately about this shit. I grew up with it at just the right time.

That's so sweet of you <3
I get pissed off sometimes at the government like what are these people just put the lockdown are they not seeing the rise in new cases?? I think they care about economy more.
Will you make some pasta for me?? In my new house? I'll be up late doing nothing and there are no more instant noodles so I'll go crazy over coffee. I'll forgot to close the curtains in my new house and you'll notice me lurking around in the house so you come over and I let you. Then we get to talking and you feel bad for me coz I haven't eaten anything then you'll make some pasta for me in my kitchen and I'll just sit there in one of the barstool watching you cook. That's just perfect 🤩🤩
Fun fact about me is I'm a vegetarian. But I eat egg. I used to get sick very frequently so I was prescribed to increase protein intake and doctor was like eat 4 eggs per day but I could do only 2😅😅
I've to think about it coz I've more than a few. Apart frm lotr & hobbit. Mostly I like movies which are set in certain universe and have more than one movie. I like maze runner, Harry Potter, Narnia, pirates of the Caribbean and John wick, men in black and MCU and DC are also on the list. I also like finding Nemo, spiderman into the spider-verse, cars, the incredibles, inception and that baby driver movie too.
What are some of your favourite movies? Anything which we can watch cuddled up in the couch in my new home ;))
(Soulmates do have this kind of bond I think 🤔)
🎶 Don't stay awake for too long don't go to bed I'll make a cup of coffee for your head🎶
*blows kisses your way* for my beloved<3

My Top 20 Films of 2017 - Part Two
Ok, so about ten minutes ago I finished watching my last 2017 film of the year. For my FULL list - all 127 films watched in order of preference - jump on over to my Letterboxd page: https://letterboxd.com/matt_bro/list/films-of-the-year-2017/
Alright, top 10:
10. Logan
Tumblr media
In a time when a lot of people still bemoan the existence of so many comic book movies (occasionally, with a point) this has been a stellar year for them. Marvel’s triple whammy of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Spiderman Homecoming and Thor Ragnarok were all excellent, heartfelt, fun knockouts and Wonder Woman was a terrific showcase for both Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins (not to mention hugely important in its own right). Only Justice League really fell back on old tired habits and resulted in a bizarre mashup of tone and purpose and featured the single most damning piece of CGI buffoonery ever conceived in Henry Cavill’s ‘we’ll fix it in post’ deleted moustache. That really is one for the ages.
But I could never have foreseen the power and beauty of something like Logan, a near-perfect capper to a spinoff trilogy that began with the God-awful Wolverine Origins. It’s strengths come from it’s convictions – this isn’t an episodic story servicing a franchise, this is a true stand alone character piece, focusing on the rarest of things – an actual ending to a beloved, previously untouchable, immortal superhero. Played out as a tragic western with claws, the film beautifully champions the importance of family and love, seen (at last) through the eyes of those that never dreamed they would experience it, let alone fight for it. With some fantastic action set pieces to boot too, this one really has its cake and its eat and is also a real sight to behold – I saw it for a second time in it’s gorgeous black and white ‘Logan Noir’ cut and every frame is a revelation. Huge props to Patrick Stewart too, delivering a devastating performance of a character is has also lived with for the past SEVENTEEN years.
9. Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool
Tumblr media
This film is a heartbreaker. My God. Definitely the most surprising cinema-going experience I had this year. I went with a friend of mine and by the time the credits were rolling, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house – best encapsulated by a burly scouser sat behind us who was openly saying “Fuck me, didn’t expect that for a Sunday afternoon. Jesus! How bloody brilliant was that!? Got any tissues?’.
Focusing on the later years of Hollywood starlet Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening on Oscar sweeping form), it finds her semi-washed up and treading the boards in London where she meets and falls for Peter Gallagher (Jamie Bell – never better than this) another actor, half her age. The tenderness and straight forwardness of their pairing is so refreshing, never making an issue or point about the older woman/younger man dynamic unless directly challenged by other characters (including Gloria’s bratty sister Joy) or themselves. The most effective emotional beats of this film aren’t signposted and drawn out for Oscar clip schmaltzyness but instead hit you in a sudden burst of passionate regret; hurtful words said in anger or defence – truly proving that the most harmful things you can say to someone you love are all too easy to let slip out before you’ve had a chance to think about what you’re saying. But the damage is done.
The film-making here is exceptional too. What could have been a rather dry biopic is given such momentum through brilliantly executed scene transitions and a flashback-enhanced narrative that keeps us embroiled in the present day scenes of Gloria succumbing to cancer whilst we watch their initial courtships and brutal arguments from the months and years leading up to it. The supporting cast that includes Julie Walters, back as Bell’s mother and Stephen Graham as his brother are brilliant but this is Bening/Bell’s movie and they knock it out of the park.
8. Baby Driver
Tumblr media
My big birthday blowout screening of the year, following last year’s Aliens 30th anniversary showing, Baby Driver did not let me down. All the usual energy, narrative foreshadowing and tightly controlled construction you’ve come to expect from an Edgar Wright flick blown out onto a much bigger and more confident scale. The genius pairing of getaway driver crime heist flick and vehicular musical allows for some hugely inventive set pieces, from the opening police chase set to Bellbottoms by the John Spencer Blues Explosion to the car-on-car parking lot duel with Queen’s Brighton Rock echoing through the tunnels.
Ansel Elgort delivers a breakout turn and everyone from Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Kevin somebody-or-other are having a ball playing bad. The romance with waitress Lily James initially feels a little under cooked but it all plays into the escapist fairytale of the action and seeing them dance together in a laundromat whilst sharing headphones is one of this year’s purest joys.
7. Get Out
Tumblr media
Where It soaked up much of the straight spooky horror acclaim this year, Get Out walked a much more tantalising and complex line between thriller, social drama, satire, comedy and horror – and pulled it all off effortlessly. Jordan Peele has long had grand cinematic aspirations as evidenced in some of the larger scale sketches in his fantastic show Key and Peele but this clearly represents everything he wanted to say and do in a debut feature. I think the odds of so perfectly nailing your voice and intentions in your very first film is astronomical but damn, he must be proud, not only of the film itself but the cultural reach, impact and resonance it has had with audiences.
Daniel Kaluuya is excellent as the everyman battling his own (rational) fears and paranoia before his instincts slowly become the domineering voice in the back of his head. Trust in oneself is the saving grace here and it’s great to see an array of other ‘traditional’ characters for this genre twist the knife and reveal their true colours. The “Rose, where are my keys” turning point is perhaps the tightest I’ve gripped the arm of my chair all year. And the eventual climax is one of the best examples of subverting expected genre tropes. Brilliant.
6. Raw
Tumblr media
Speaking of confident debuts, Julia Ducournau’s is equally astounding. Not for the faint hearted, this queasy, cannibalistic coming of age tale is a near perfect slice of fucked up fever dream. It follows a young vegetarian attending veterinary college who is forced to eat rabbit meat in a sick hazing ritual – one that her fellow student and older sister has clearly already experienced. Slowly but surely, a triggering of her animalistic appetite grows, coinciding both with her own first steps into a sexual awakening as well as a growing sense of unease that something isn’t right in her family to begin with.
The plot takes some nutty turns, not least in the last few minutes, but everything works; from the gorgeous imagery to the tonal juggling to the assured performances. This would make an excellent entry in an ‘arthouse does horror subgenre’ triple bill, doing for cannibals what A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night does for vampires and The Witch does for... witches.
5. Jackie
Tumblr media
This is a breathtaking biopic - interested less in the broad strokes of history and what we think we know about the aftermath of one of the most infamous events of the 20th century and more in the nuanced, private, personal moments of grief in the public eye. Natalie Portman is astounding as Jackie Kennedy, nailing everything from the look to the voice to the affectations, and its the dreamlike, woozy way that the film unfolds that really draws you in and positions you in the eye of a hurricane. The JFK assassination was a monumental cultural milestone but this story asks you to put yourself in the shoes of a woman who was unavoidably trapped at ground zero - and largely all alone with her memories and emotions, despite the surrounding pressures of aides, the press and the American people.
This is supremely confident filmmaking, incredibly affecting and features another stand out score from Mica Under the Skin Levi.
4. 20th Century Women
Tumblr media
The second film on my list for both Annette Bening and Greta Gerwig, this is a wonderful story about the strengths and flaws found in both the family we’re given and the family we choose. With an anecdotal, episodic structure, it is less focused on plot and more on the individual moments that the characters in our lives provide us with; how they affect our own life story and evoke memories of a certain time and place.
It’s highly emotional, with touching asides and rambling voiceovers telling us numerous stories whilst keeping a sense of an anchor through the relationship between Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) and his mother Dorothea (Bening). The supporting cast is uniformly great, from Elle Fanning as the girl next door to Billy Crudup as a lonely tenant/handyman, this one really hit me hard. The late 70s period details, along with the soundtrack, and the sun bleached cinematography recalls the joy of discovering yourself through questionable music, bad decisions and rebellious behaviour. Check it out.
3. A Ghost Story
Tumblr media
I doubt any other film this year left quite a long lasting impression as this one did. I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards and became rather obsessed with pretty much everything it accomplishes. It’s a fairly straight forward tale of a couple (Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara) whose relationship begins to feel the strain as they quietly realise they might want different things in life. We’re not privy to many more details, positioned as a voyeur which will continue as things unfold but before long, Affleck is killed in a simple car accident outside his home and seemingly rises from death to haunt his old home, dressed entirely in the hospital bed sheet his corpse was covered in. It’s a genius depiction of the traditional ghost - simultaneously off-putting, amusing, whimsical and ridiculous - and it’s also rooted in logic too. As the ghost continues to watch his Mara grieve for him (mesmerisingly encapsulated in an unbroken take of a depressed Mara eating an entire pie that her neighbour brought round), he (and us) slowly begin to notice time... breaking.
The way the passing of time is visualised here is beautifully simple - rather than the long slow fades that normally indicate transitions, here it is as sudden as the ghost turning around to look over his shoulder, through a series of hard cuts or sometimes, no cuts at all. That feeling of time literally slipping away is brutal and the ghost can do nothing but wander about, seemingly helpless to how fast things change. One moment, Mara packs up and leaves, the next a new family of three have apparently been living there for months. Ultimately, the film becomes a meditation on the importance we embue in places, not so much people. The house is the anchor - the core - of what the ghost latches on to and if you’ve ever had the feeling of wondering who lived in your home before you and who will be there after you’ve gone, this film will dig deep into your mind.
I found this to be a brilliantly low-fi way to tell a huge thematic story and the use of music throughout - including one central track in particular - only adds to it. If you can get past the pie-eating without thinking ‘da hell is this’, you’re in for a treat.
2. Dunkirk
Tumblr media
I’m almost scared to put this so high. I’ve no doubt in my mind that it’s a five star film and it’s certainly the most visceral, immediate cinema going experience I’ve perhaps ever had (I caught it at the BFI IMAX, opening night, at a late showing and it truly does fill your entire periphery vision) but a part of me wonders if it will hold up on second viewing - i.e. if seeing it anywhere other than the IMAX will diminish it. Well, I’m sure it won’t be the same but I’m also convinced it won’t matter either because this is clockwork precision film making of the highest order; an exercise in narrative structure as well as simply being the most accurate representation of the event in question as there possibly could be.
Some people have complained that this film does a disservice to its characters but I disagree. The power of this story is that it’s the tale of the everyman - how all of these people, no matter the extent of their involvement or the merits of their bravery, became heroes. I don’t need to see the ‘movie’ version of this - where characters chat about their backstories or show photos of loved ones or do every other cliche around. I KNOW all that is going on within the frame but I don’t need to see it. What we’re seeing is the immediacy of these events, which heightens the terror and the hopelessness felt by everyone on that beach or in those boats or in those planes. The land/sea/sky split is impeccably done and the devotion to practical battle scenes is stunning. The aerial dogfights - in full IMAX - practically made me feel like I was strapped to a wing. But even looking past the spectacle, the performances DO bring out the heart of the characters we’re presented with. From Cillian Murphy’s PTSD riddled soldier to the steely determination of Mark Rylance to the rather genius casting of Harry Styles - the exact kind of kid who would have been swept up in this war - everyone is all in and they all blew me away. Especially Tom Hardy, in perhaps his most restricted role yet (it’s like Bane meets Locke), who garners the biggest cheers.
And Hans Zimmer’s epic score can make me sweat just thinking about it. A perfect compliment to the tightening framework and increasing stakes of the action.
1. La La Land
Tumblr media
Where do I even begin with this? Full spoilers ahead, I couldn’t help myself.
Clearly, this isn’t a film for everyone. And I get that. Some people think it’s fine but kinda hate musicals. Others get frustrated with the character’s choices. Others would have preferred it to actually remain a musical throughout. I understand all of these criticisms but for me, it does perfectly what it sets out to do.
First of all, I personally love the musical numbers - from the jaw dropping opening of Another Day of Sun to the kinetic, glamourous rush of Someone in the Crowd to the heartfelt yearning of City of Stars. I think they’re great tunes, wonderfully performed and exceptionally shot. I think of the long one-shot takes of the first, the swimming pool splashdown of the second and the little smack on the shoulder of the third. They’re rooted in feeling, in character and in the tradition of Hollywood. They wear their influences on their sleeve but never feel like a parody. And to me, the sudden shift away from being a flat out musical at the end of the first act is not a misstep but entirely organic - this is the rare love story that has its head in the clouds (romantic dating montages, dreamlike dancing through the stars) as well as being brutally honest about what we want, how we get them and the sacrifices these things cost.
The movie starts out as this fantastical anti-meet-cute before morphing into a romantic fable full of wonderment but the moment the characters get together, it switches gears and becomes more grounded in reality. The music largely stops and the real world catches up. Arguments are had, compromises are made, promises are broken. This is the harsh truth of getting what you want at the cost of losing what you’ve perhaps always wanted. The tension between Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) becomes uncomfortable - he’s lying to himself about doing what he must to achieve his real dream, even despite Mia’s support and she is battling her own demons in chasing hers. It’s only when the film brings them to their lowest points does it slowly turn back into being something more magical. Sebastian returns to Mia with the news of a new audition, which results in the most raw song/anecdote of the film ‘Audition (The Fools Who Dream), and just as we’re swept into the happy ending we were promised from decades of these movies, the pair realise they have to do their own thing. “We’ll just have to wait and see”...
The film’s extended epilogue is where it really doubles down on this idea. As we’re treated to a return of the ‘full blown musical’, we see the true Hollywood version of this entire story, played out in dreamlike fast forward. Sebastian leaping off his piano to kiss Mia the second he meets her, the villainous J.K. Simmons snapping his fingers and stepping aside, Sebastian giving a standing ovation at Mia’s one woman show that he missed entirely before, the two of them travelling to Paris and crafting a life together that Mia actually did alone. On the surface, it’s a joyous, colourful, happy finale but the final curtain reminds you that it’s all been... a daydream. The road not travelled. So while the film ends with them both achieving their own desires, they’ve lost one another. This is the all-too-often-true cost of creative pursuit and fulfilment and it’s so rare to see it held aloft in the final reel of an Oscar winning movie that appears to be the exact opposite on the surface.
It’s daring, brave and imaginative and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Maybe I’m too soppy and maybe I’ve just ruined the entire plot for you (I definitely have) but I just couldn’t see anything topping this the moment I saw it. And I guess I was right. Damien Chazelle is a wizard and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Logan is Worth an Oscar | GD
A
Tumblr media
It's f*cking Hugh Jackman!
I was first exposed to the Wolverine series (aka Hugh Jackman) when X-Men Origins: Wolverine was all the rage. My sister wanted to go watch the night premiere, but after one look at Jackman - ripped and bloody and snarling - I shook my head and shied away. Fast forward three years, and Wolverine is the best goddamn X-Men ever created, Hugh Jackman is the best casting decision ever made, and Logan has changed superhero movies forever.
The previous Wolverine films haven't been that successful. Compared to the Avengers franchise or basically any other Marvel movie created (minus Green Lantern but Deadpool makes up for that, right?), Wolverine has suffered a bad case of misfire after misfire. While Hugh Jackman was practically made for the role of James Howlett aka Logan, it wasn't until perhaps the X-Men series itself (or Jean Grey?) that catapulted the character into the iconic symbol it is now.
Tumblr media
The year is 2029, and mutants are all but gone. Logan lives a quiet life as a limousine driver in the wee hours of the morning. He drinks a lot and is rather lonely, and his only company lies in caring for a senile Professor X with mutant tracker, Caliban (Stephen Merchant). One day, Logan is approached by a mysterious woman by the name of Gabriella Lopez who is a nurse at a shady cancer research company, Transigen who asks Logan to take in Laura (Dafne Keen). Laura turns out to be X-23, Wolverine's daughter, and a product of Transigen, which manufactures and turns babies into mutant soldiers. Lopez was part of the movement to take the kids to safety - to a sanctuary called Eden - but in the chaos, only managed to save Laura. Obviously, as the grumpy old man he is, Logan refuses but after a series of circumstances, is forced to take in Laura.
First of all, the action in this movie is what Avengers, Deadpool, Spiderman, even Ironman (my Avenger bae) wants their movies to have. It's phenomenal and by phenomenal, I mean, dark and gory and real and absolutely invigorating. It's CGI but it's not and you really can't tell when the line begins and ends because it was that mesmerizing. The screams, the wounds, the metal-on-metal, even the blood (fake and alive) splatter the screens and in our minds, and make Deadpool a kiddie splash in the adult pool of R-rated fun. And might I add that Hugh Jackman, at 48, still looks killer?
While the action was top-notch, it wouldn't have been done justice without the performances of the star-studded cast. Hugh Jackman delivers a powerful and heart-tugging performance as a lonely, dying but still stubborn Logan. You feel his pain through the screen, as always, but this time as a darker, gloomier version of the beloved character. Patrick Stewart is fabulous as a mentally-ill Professor X, providing the majority of the film's humor (he crazy but not that crazy). Dafne Keen, our newest recruit, steals a great majority of the scenes. She puts a new meaning on "Silent but deadly" because she is - and it was fucking awesome. The supporting cast is also pretty great, too. Stephen Merchant as Caliban is a new - but wonderful - addition and our main villain, Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) sports a believable Southern twang and is just as calculating as he is despicable.
Tumblr media
But what makes Logan stand out from the rest of the Wolverine films (heck, even all the Avengers, screw it) is the emotion that it lends the viewers. Sure, it's grimmer than the others but it's a film about family. Professor X as Grandpa Chuck and Logan as his son is a humorous take on the powerful connection that the two characters have. It's heartfelt and a bit tragic...but in a beautiful way. Also, there is a unique bond between Laura and Logan that you don't - can't - see with anyone else. Not Mariko Yashida (The Wolverine), not even Jean Grey...in fact, this father-daughter duo is what propels the movie into its deep, emotional core that other superhero movies miss. In fact, I cried. Twice. And there were grown men right next to me, and I heard them sniffle at least once.
Now, the plot is a different question entirely. It's nothing wholly new - bad guys go after the main character. Truly, it's the action and the heart that add it a spice that was never tried before in the Marvel-verse. Yet, although the main plot was usually surface-deep, Logan took risks that rocketed it to the 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. First, both Professor X and Logan are dying. They've lived a good, long life but the fact that you're introduced to their dying states (and Logan's suicidal thoughts) near the beginning of the movie hint at a less than happy ending (more on that later). Second, the mutant kids, and not just Laura. The kids - young, artificial mutants - are in search of a new home, a new phase in their lives essentially (in the shape of a franchise, perhaps?). They are part of Wolverine's final battle, and a crucial step in the destruction (and introduction) of their foes. Two risks set up in a way that made me a bit doubtful of the movie, but two risks done beautifully by Director Mangold and the rest of the cast.
And then there's the ending. By God, have I ever tried to hide crying that hard? No, I don't think so. I'm still thinking about it now - heck, the only reason I didn't post this sooner was so I could collect my thoughts. To be fair, though, I didn't particularly love the way it ended. It was fitting to the story-line but just tragic. It stole any chance of the Wolverine series ending somewhat peacefully, but nevertheless, Laura was there to give her father some short-lived tranquility (which he delivered a heartfelt quote - the only one that the father and daughter had time to spare). The X-shaped cross was a clever touch, too, but gah, I half-expected something more and half-expected something less, and ended up getting both. *crying*
Tumblr media
In short, Logan is a gem. An Infinity Stone, if you must (get it? No? Alright...). With just the action scenes alone, this movie deserves an Oscar. With the performances of Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart as our old friends, and Dafne Keen as the vicious and spunky X-23, Logan is worth an Oscar and a thousand. I couldn't have asked for anything short of what I saw today, and I was both entranced and destroyed at the same time. And if you're anything of a masochist like I am, or someone who just loves the Wolverine, Marvel, and/or Hugh Jackman like I do, then Logan is your best bet for a deliciously soggy Saturday afternoon.
*originally watched 3/11
PS. I heard news that there will be more Wolverine movies in the future? And that it will NOT be Hugh Jackman who will be playing him? Hm...what do you think about this?

Logan Review (2017)
I remember when I first watched X-Men back in the year 2000. One of the most memorable scenes for me was Wolverine’s introduction. That moment of seeing those powerful claws put to use for the first time was a sight to behold. Flash forward seventeen years later, and Hugh Jackman has owned the role of Wolverine. Our beloved superheroes have had changes over the years. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc. have all been graced by different actors. Even our own mutants, the leaders of the packs themselves Professor X and Magneto have had different actors. (Although, I love James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in those roles and I hope they continue them). The point is, there has only been ONE Wolverine on the movie screen, and that is Jackman’s Wolverine. There have been seven X-Men universe movies with Wolverine/Jackman credited in them, and nine if you want to count the surprise cameos in ‘First Class’ and ‘Apocalypse’. I enjoyed all the X-Men movies I have seen. ‘Days of Future Past’ was my favorite, ‘The Last Stand’ was my least but still enjoyable. However, ‘Logan’ separates itself from the others. It separates itself from other comic book inspired movies in the Marvel and DC Universe. It is unconventional, intense, gritty, heartfelt, dark, and violent. It is also very funny, with Jackman providing his famous grumpy and pissed off persona that made us all love this character. Another hats off props I want to give is to Patrick Stewart. Seeing him and Jackman on screen together as a kind of father/son relationship is always a joy. And in this movie, it really shines. If this is their last (they both have confirmed retirement from the roles, but one can still hope) time playing these two characters, they really gave it their all with this movie. ‘Logan’ was directed by James Mangold (The Wolverine 2013), also known for (’3:10 to Yuma’, ‘Walk the Line’) This movie takes place in the year 2029. Mutants are just about extinct. Logan works as a limousine driver, living in an isolated desert area near the Mexican border with Caliban and Professor X. (For all those non-comic book nerds wondering who Caliban is and what he is doing in this movie, this article could help https://moviepilot.com/p/who-is-caliban-logan-x-men/421864). Professor X isn’t well, he’s suffering from seizures and memory loss. He is cared for by Logan along with Caliban, and required to take medication at certain hours. It seems that this is the way their lives will all play out. That is, until Logan meets a mysterious woman with a plea for help. As the story unfolds, Wolverine and Professor X are on a journey to protect a gifted young girl Laura (played terrifically by newcomer Dafne Keen) and get her to safety. Logan and Professor X seemed to have just about had it with the missions, but I’m glad they had one more left in them. One thing that should be pointed out is this movie has an R-rating. If you wanted to see what Logan’s (and Laura’s) claws can really do, you won’t be disappointed. Also, the swearing makes things more believable as well mostly for Logan’s part. I grew up playing the X-Men fighting game on Sega Saturn back in the 90′s. What I liked about using Wolverine’s character was that he was straightforward- slash the heck out of your opponent. And it was awesome to see that play out on the big screen, with Wolverine and Laura going complete beastmode on the villains. The fight scenes we’re incredible and brutal (prepare to see lots of blood and flying limbs). This movie is an emotional roller coaster ride that will have you laughing in one scene and then feeling admiration and sadness in the next. The chemistry between Professor X, Laura, and Logan we’re so good. You can just tell they spent a lot of time together while filming this even while off camera. If I was to point out any flaws for this movie, it would be...honestly I really can’t. It would usually be the main antagonist, however I enjoyed Pierce’s character (played cunningly by Boyd Holbrook, hope to see more from him). Another would be if a character did something completely stupid and out of character, but I didn’t notice that either. I guess the only negative would be the confusion about Caliban for the casual X-Men fans, but that is a very small nitpick. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie, it was really good. Hopefully it opens the door for more unconventional approach to comic book based movies. Hugh Jackman gave an incredible performance, and if this is his last time playing Wolverine-standing ovation for all the work over the years. The next actor (if there is one) has some very big shoes to fill. And if you’re still feeling sad and wiping away your tears, there is always a glimmer of hope and X-Men will live on.
5 out of 5 stars.
Side Notes
My favorite comic film of all time is “The Dark Knight” but this one comes pretty close. I just like Batman and The Joker more than Wolverine, but I became a bigger Wolverine and X-Men fan that is for sure.
I really want to see more of Baby Wolverine aka Laura, such a bad-ass character. If they can somehow incorporate the new kids with the First Class X-Men Generation, *faints. If they can add Deadpool to the mix- double faints.
I’m still dreaming about a Quicksliver and Deadpool movie- *heart attack. http://movieweb.com/deadpool-quicksilver-x-men-crossover-movie-evan-peters/
Still planning on John Wick reviews, might start the first one today. Possible movies coming up- “Lion”, “Kong-Skull Island”, “Before I Fall”

#OscarsSoDiverse: My 2017 Oscars Predictions
Tumblr media
How could I begin telling you how positively different this year’s Oscar nominees are without being too dramatic? Well, I guess I would begin by saying: diversity. Yes, they have recovered quite a bit from 2016’s controversial #OscarSoWhite extravaganza and, being an avid Academy Awards fan since 2010, the year where a foreign language film won the prized Golden Statuette for Best Picture, The Artist (2012), I have been defending the Oscars from all the criticism and let me tell you: this year, I never had so much to say to defend it since the Oscars did not need the defense; they made it themselves. “How so?” one might ask. First, they have started inviting new members for the Academy, sending out more than 500 invitations to esteemed young and new actors such as Andrew Garfield (Spiderman), song writers such as Sia Furler (Zootopia), and foreign language film directors László Nemes (Son of Saul). This move was made after the criticism of the Oscars being only a “gentleman’s club”, literally, because almost 75% - 85% of the members of the Academy are, to quote the naysayers, “white old men,” hence the recruitment of a fresh new batch of women, young filmmakers, and people of color. Such a ploy paved way for a diversity in the nominee line-up: more women represented (most notable is Joi McMillon, the first ever woman, and a woman of color at that, to ever be nominated for Best Editing for the heartfelt movie Moonlight), and more people of color (Ava DuVernay for 13th). True enough, the nomination for most is not made only to show that the Oscars are noticing them, but that most of these people are also exhibiting great craftmanship in their particular field of expertise. And that, I guess, is how I begin my 2017 Oscar Predictions: an ode to the minorities now having a chance at getting the elusive and exclusive Golden Oscar Statuette.
Enough about that, I will get right into it:
Make-up and Hairstyling
Less is More, a saying most people use in their daily lives; a quote which earned a second nomination for Eva von Bahr and Love Larson (first in the work for The 100-Year old Man Whou Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared) in their minimalistic work in A Man Called Ove (also nominated for best foreign language film) making the effect of a man losing hair and simple design through makeup as it competes with Suicide Squad and Star Trek Beyond: both big-budgeted Hollywood blockbusters whose prosthetics is extremely detailed and delicately applied. Who won me over? I think my soft spot for underdogs made me call it out: I go for the less-budgeted one.
Would Win: A Man Called Ove
Could win: Star Trek Beyond
Costume Design
Period films and fantasy films dominates this category and this year is not an exception. Period films Jackie, Allied, and Florence Foster Jenkins made it as well as J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, whose costume were made by Oscar quasi-favorite Colleen Atwood, known for her work in Into the Woods. The surprise here, at least for me, considering the many period dramas and fantasy features came out last year, was La La Land. I don’t know about your choice but mine would have to be Jackie because of its well-woven Pink Chanel Dress, resembling the actual one Jackie Kennedy wore on the day JFK was shot in their car. What comes close is Fantastic Beasts because, well, of Colleen Atwood and her reputation.
Would win: Jackie
Could win: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Sound Mixing
The sound categories confuse people so here’s how I go about explaining it: sound editing is the making of the sound heard, sound mixing is how it is synced/synchronized to the scenes. For this one, I went to vote La La Land for its hypnotic tap dancing sequence and, conclusively, almost every scene that had made use of those neat sound mixing. I must admit I almost went swinging my vote for Arrival for its sequences of encounter with the other-worldly creatures, but I didn’t.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Arrival
Sound Editing
Ah yes. The sound made for film. I almost thought I would go for the simplicity of the sounds in La La Land yet there’s something about war films that takes you on a different light, hence my vote goes to Hacksaw Ridge.
Would Win: Hacksaw Ridge
Could win: La La Land
Music (Original Song)
Most people ask me why this category is here, well, it just is, I guess. This year’s feud is between two musicals: La La Land, two song nominations, and Moana, one song nomination.
Would Win: How Far I’ll Go (Moana)
Could Win: Audition (Fools Who Dream) (La La Land)
Music (Original Score)
La La Land could have swept through this category easily, having Passengers as one of its contenders but here comes the unexpected-expected Jackie, whose score was made by Mica Levi, notable for her work in Under the Skin. There is kind of a difficult choice between a musical score of an actual musical and a drama because on the one hand, you have a performed one, on the other you have one that lacks lyrics but contributes to the overall feeling and emotion of  scenes.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Jackie
Documentary Feature
The diversity in this category is spectacular: 3 of the 5 films nominated are directed or written by African-American directors and writers. One of those writers is a prominent figure in the formation of novels and literary pieces that center of African-American issues, James Baldwin (I am Not Your Negro). Another is the longest feature film to ever be nominated for an Oscar (467 mins or 7 hours), O.J.: Made in America, and one is directed the biggest snobs of the Oscars 2915 Ava DuVernay for her amazing directing for the powerful Selma, 13th. The biggest contenders are, without bias, are the 3 said films namely I Am Not Your Negro, 13th, and O.J.: Made in America. That is not to say that Fire at Sea and Life, Animated, are not great but their story, although they are equally heartfelt and sweet, is overpowered by the former. For me, the film 13th makes the more gritty and eye-opening experience for me as an individual: it’s not even about the black community anymore at some point; to me, it’s about how we view ourselves as people of a community and the role we play in it, how the institution of the powerful continues to oppress the powerless and strips them off of any of it. Moreso, it analyzes the US in its mass incarceration of criminals, mostly African-American, and how, in its history, specially during the Jim Crow, it is able to procure slavery in this particular form (I know it sounds like a propaganda but trust me, it’s not. This film is available for viewing at Netflix if you want to check it out). I am Not Your Negro is poetic for me and I don’t think the Academy would go for something like it; O.J.:Made in America is equally gritty as the 13th but it’s really too long for me. This battle is a true nail-biter.
Would Win: 13th
Could Win:  O.J.:Made in America
Animated Feature
The frontrunners for this category are neck-and-neck in their fight as there are three of them. Zootopia tackled the sensitive issue of racism and community bias. Moana feels so close to people living in the Pacific (and the animation of the sea and beaches are beautiful). Kubo and the Two Strings is so beautifully animated in stop-motion that it was nominated for best visual effects. “Do I go for story or do I go for animation?” that is the question. I guess it’s high time that Laika win for their stop-motion animated feature.
Would Win: Kubo and the Two Strings
Could Win: Moana or Zootopia
Foreign Language Film
You know what wins me over almost every single time in this category? COMEDIES! And Toni Erdmann (Germany) is one! Yes. I have nothing to say other than it made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants (kidding). However, I have to also praise The Salesman (Iran) and A Man Called Ove (Sweden) for its dramatic takes, and Land of Mine (Denmark) for a heart-crushing experience. I would also like to acknowledge the first ever film to be nominated from the Oceania, Tanna (Australia)!!!!(I’m just sad that Elle from France was not nominated in this category but I’m glad for its best actress nomination)
Would win: Toni Erdmann (Germany)
Could win: The Salesman (Iran)
Visual Effects
The Jungle Book vs. Kubo and the Two Strings is how I see this category running its course, although the other nominees, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Deepwater Horizon, and Doctor Strange are not to be missed. I decided to choose the realistic talking, breathing, and running wildlife animals of The Jungle Book over the gorgeous visuals of Kubo.
Would Win: The Jungle Book
Could win: Kubo and the Two Strings
Production Design
Like the costume design, this one is heralded massively by the period films and fantasy films. This year is quite different, as one period frontrunner, Hail, Caesar! is challenged by the beloved musical La La Land. The former boasts spectacular set design as it shows the peak of Hollywood’s film industry: the big-budgeted studio-shot films during the mid to late 20th century whereas the later focuses on the matching of costume design to the setting with matching light engineering. As much as I love the set design of Hail, Caesar! since I’m a film enthusiast, I would have to put my hands down for La La Land’s neat and palatable serving.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Hail, Caesar!
Editing
Three films are winning me over here: Moonlight, its sharp editing that showed the three stages in the life of one black gay man, Hacksaw Ridge, its bold cut that showed a blood-bathed battlefield, or La La Land, its sleek edit that showed beautiful musical numbers one after the other. I went for THE musical.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Moonlight
Cinematography
If only Lion did not win that American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award for Achievement in Cinematography, I would have easily went for La La Land. I thought for sure it would win now I’m having second thoughts since ASC is like the best predictor for this Oscar category. Not to set aside, also, is Silence and its picturesque visuals perfect for a somber visual experience. I hope I set my heart to the right choice. What I loved about La La Land is that it incorporated cinemascope, reminiscent of the mid-to-late 20th century camerawork and mixed it with contemporary digital cinematic maneuvers.
Would win: La La Land
Could win: Lion
*Side note: here now, are the major awards of the Oscars*
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Moonlight or Hidden Figures? Both great. Both spectacular. Both impactful. Do I go for the coming of age story of a gay black man or the true-to-life story that presents the African-American women behind NASA who are responsible for the test flights back in the time where there still was Jim Crow?
Would win: Moonlight
Could Win: Hidden Figures
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Among the nominees, I really had so much praise for 20th Century Women but, admittedly, it all boils down to Manchester by the Sea and La La Land. Sure you have two great stories but which one garners the coveted prize? I like Manchester because it is timid but painful since it tackles the story of death; another thing about it is that it made the characters feel so three-dimensional: like you know them as people, something far too few films have ever accomplished. On the other hand, I like La La Land because it placed a familiar story in a familiar setting yet still summon what’s so different and peculiar about it: the enigma of the story that happens in it, the sheer coldness, the sparkling sun, and yes, the interplay of the characters. In a perfect world, I hope Manchester by the Sea gets it, however, the Academy loves La La Land so much they might just let it steal this one.
Would win: Manchester by the Sea
Could win: La La Land
Best Supporting Actor
Michael Shannon has been the surprise here as he portrayed a cancer-stricken police officer. However, much has been said and much has been heard, Mahershala Ali for his performance in Moonlight is put on the pedestal and the only one seen to garner this prize. To me, Ali’s performance lingers long after he’s gone in the film: he only appears around the first 15-20mins but the impact Ali and his character portrayal has left behind trembles and creates a rippled effect that is felt even long after the film finishes, and what a stellar sighting that is.
Would (and should) win: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Could win (in an imprefect world): Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)
Best Supporting Actress
No one can take this prize away from Emmy and Tony award-winning character actress Viola Davis and her heartfelt portrayal of an African-American mother, wife, and companion.
Would win: Viola Davis (Fences)
Potential Spoiler: Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)
Best Actor
Oh my! The true nail-biter of this year’s category is this one. Casey Affleck or Denzel Washington. I hate saying it but Affleck did a better job than Washington. The reason why there is so much fuss because of the allegations of sexual harassment by Affleck which affects his chance at winning the Oscar. The main reason, in my humble opinion, why Washington is the one in the two frontrunners is the line delivery (since the lines are almost 24 sentences long because the film is an adaptation of a theatre play).
Would win (hopefully): Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
Could win:  Denzel Washington (Fences)
Best Actress
Isabelle Huppert played an assaulted corporate executive, Emma Stone played a romantic actress-wannabe, Meryl Streep played Florence Foster Jenkins, a music enthusiasts who believes she hits the perfect notes even though she doesn’t, Ruth Negga played an African-American woman shunned for her marriage with a white man (back in the Jim Crow) whose case won the right for interracial marriage in America (true story), Natalie Portman played Jackie Kennedy: who then made the most out of here role? For me, it was Portman and Huppert. For the Screen Actor’s Guild, however, it was Stone. True enough, SAG awards predict the best actress quite precisely, and they moved me to consider Stone’s performance which led me to witness La La Land for the second time and truly immerse in her portrayal, and what a spectacle it really was.
Would win: Emma Stone (La La Land)
Could win: Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Direction
I seriously doubt if anyone can argue for a better winner that Damien Chazelle of La La Land for this category. He had created such a great vision and translated it magnificently into the La La Land that we have witnessed. A craftmanship like his is unmatchable this year.
Would (definitely) win: La La Land
Best Picture
The highest award of the night for me goes to...
La La Land, not because of its hype but because of its near-perfect mixture of elements that blend well together as well as reviving an almost-forgotten genre of musical in film. The revitalization of everything in this film is fresh as it is neat. There are other great entries in this category as well, my top favorites being Manchester by the Sea, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight. The others, Lion and Hell of High Water are also both intriguing. However, there still is something about La La Land that makes it stand out above all the rest: the direction. If not for this direction by Damien Chazelle, such a film would not be possible.
There you guys go! Here are my predictions for the 89th Academy Awards. Although I am not fully confident with the predictions I wrote, I hope you have as much fun with it as I do. This year’s Oscars awards nominations give me great hope in the future of this award giving body and I hope it continues its current course. Here’s to the honoring of the best in 2016’s films! Cheers!

Avengers: Endgame - Movie Review
I actually saw this movie opening weekend and decided to give everyone a chance to watch before publishing because I know just how important this film was for my generation and those Marvel fans before us. I definitely do not want to ruin anything for anyone so if you have not seen the movie yet DO NOT READ THIS and don’t watch the trailer for the new Spiderman Movie. It will truly ruin your day, LOL.
That was your warning….
Now, for those of you that are not HUGE Marvel fans, if you’re wondering… Yes, I did sit through the 3 hours and 2 minutes of awesomeness known as Avengers: Endgame. Would I do it again? ABSOLUTELY! The movie was awesome and everything I imagined it would be. It didn’t even feel like I was sitting there for 3 hours.
I think it was only right for the writers to end the story line with Tony Stark the same way they started this decade of awesomeness with him, and he deserved that spotlight. We have waited 10 years for the powerhouse that was Thanos to come and conquer or be conquered, I had no idea Infinity War and Endgame would play out they way they did, but I think it was genius. I love movies that don’t have the fairy tale happy ending and leave us with scars because that’s how real life is; it hurts, makes us cry, and makes us question how we’re going to move forward after this. I mean, I didn’t cry or anything, and I definitely can’t wait for whatever Marvel has next in our heroes respective story lines, but life isn’t perfect and I admire movies that show these worlds in a more realistic light.
Leaving out of Infinity War, I knew Gamora was gone… although they’ve found a way to bring her back to close out the Guardians franchise without a missing piece. I also knew Thanos had to die and our beloved heroes would need to be brought back to life… there was too much money and too many franchises riding on their main characters being brought back from the dead; especially T-Challa because the black community was going to have a riot if our beloved Black Panther was knocked out of the MCU after ONE self titled film of cinematic genius.
But here is where I have to acknowledge Stan Lee’s amazingness and how I almost dropped a tear to see he actually got to end the game with Endgame… truly iconic and he will be missed.
So! Avenger’s: Endgame… where to start? It’s definitely clear to say if you did not follow the entire franchise with all of the individual story lines that tie into the Avenger’s, you’re going to be lost at some parts during the movie. We took trips back to the first Guardians of the Galaxy, the first Avenger’s movie, Doctor Strange, Thor: The Dark World, Avenger’s: Infinity War, and I know I’m missing a few others but those were the big ones for me that were traveled back to. But honestly, just watch all of the movies to get the entire experience and learn who each character is, there are 22 movies included in the Avenger’s MCU, although I don’t really count the Incredible Hulk (2008)… Bruce Banner/The Hulk isn’t even portrayed by Mark Ruffalo in that movie and I personally don’t think it has anything to do with the series other than it’s an origin story for The Hulk; but, watch at your own discretion and choose if you agree on your own.
Now, don’t be confused. I completely 100% believe that the movies are corny and cheesy, some more than others, but that’s the beauty of taking your childhood comic book characters and making them real; just take a look at the Transformer’s dynasty… Optimus Prime is about as corny as it gets but we still love him on film! Let me not get off topic, though. My least favorite films from the Avenger’s universe are the first two Thor movies (although Ragnorak was absolutely amazing and saved Thor’s story line in my eyes), Iron Man 3 was okay I could have done without it, Spiderman: Homecoming, and Ant-Man… I know those last two may make some people unhappy, but you can definitely share your views in the comments below! I’d love a good conversation on this. My faves, however, consisted of Black Panther, all 3 of the Captain America Movies, Guardians of the Galaxy 1, Thor: Ragnorak, and all of the Avenger’s movies. All the rest were good for what was needed to move the story along, including those that I didn’t care for much.
Only thing I don’t care for are how the movies end with plot holes that are later “filled” in future movies, I think that’s Marvel’s attempt to cover their tracks, but those holes could be left purposely to leave space for flexibility in upcoming movies. There were a couple holes in the plot for Endgame that I’m just not convinced of, however.
If Thanos’ past self is killed, shouldn’t the affects of Infinity War be erased? If he’s dead before he can snap his fingers the first time, technically he never erased half of the universe’s population, which then means Endgame didn’t occur and we should be sent back 5 years prior as though nothing ever happened. I could believe that only those heroes that participated in fixing the timeline would remember what actually happened.
If Gamora died in Infinity War, but her past self was brought forward when Thanos came to the future in Endgame, technically Thanos could not have killed her to get the Death Stone in Infinity War, which also means he never erased half of the universe’s population. I guess they could spin this as since she’s still alive it doesn’t make a difference… still a plot hole to me.
Where did Loki go? He got hold of the tesseract when the team went back to 2012 to get it and the staff, but of course things did not go as planned and he disappeared. I just want to know when we are going to discuss how that throws off the time line, because if he disappears he technically never winds up in jail in Asgard.
I’m sure there’s some round about way to explain all of these, but I’m just letting it be known that it doesn’t completely make sense. Time travel is a complicated nonexistent thing to understand as is, so I won’t sit too much on what was off about it because there was so much more that was right about it.
I was talking to somebody about the movie and appreciated just how amazing the women were in this film, yet again, displaying just how D.O.P.E. we are in real life and the way we always come through in the clutch. Okoye, Shuri, Valkyrie, Wanda/Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Pepper Potts, and our beloved Black Widow, may she rest in peace, kill the game in the movie and aren’t just side kicks. This goes back to my excitement about Black Panther… I don’t care what anybody says or who chooses to believe that movie wasn’t a big deal, it was a HUGE deal to me and the emphasis of D.O.P.E. black women was truly out of this world. They seriously carried that trend through the end of the Avenger’s story.
In particular, let’s highlight Black Widow and her sacrifice to save the world. There truly was no question about who would have to die between her and Hawkeye, unfortunately. They were quite the pair but he had something tangible to gain from saving the world, his family; she, on the other hand, was able to save all of her friends and give his family back to him by sacrificing herself. She had waited and obsessed over how to save the world for FIVE years and this was it; Hawkeye went through the world killing bad guys to remedy the curse that was Thanos. I think it was a beautiful second chance for him. He not only got his family back but his best friend gave her life so he could find his way again and become the hero she knew he was.
This is why I’m so hooked on how D.O.P.E. we are as women!
Captain America also got a loving ending to his story and I appreciate how the baton was passed to Sam Wilson, a glorious black man. Could this be foreshadowing to a branch off for Captain America movies?? I tell you one thing, these crazies in the world today better not start ANY NONSENSE about there being a black Captain America the way they did about Idris Elba being the black James Bond…. and that’s that on that.
For my dear Iron Man… Tony Stark you have truly achieved the level of acknowledgment and heroism that you chased after with your escape from captivity in 2009 and we appreciate you for your sacrifice and getting that 1 in 14,000,605 chance to beat Thanos right! Tony Stark’s path has taken many turns that I didn’t expect it to take following him through the years, but I’m glad he reached the goal he was fighting for in the movie primarily; to save his family. The procession shown at his funeral to close out the movie was so beautifully laid out the only thing that could have made it better was if Stan Lee had made a cameo. I think it was genius how the pan through all of the characters at the funeral was a parallel of the comic book opening for all of the Marvel movies. I think the best part about how Tony is honored is that Pepper was by his side in the fight against Thanos and he had daughter that I’m most certain is going to follow in his footsteps in both brains and courage. His legacy will definitely live on into new movies and through the characters that we got back.
There are truly so many other things that can be said about the movie. Overall, it was the best ending for this struggle to survive than I could have imagined. It truly made the last 10 years worth while, and I appreciate the growth of Marvel over the years in their execution of all of these movies. They sought out to tell an amazing story and ended up with an epic playing field that has provided a ridiculous amount of growth and development for the company. The casting has definitely been A-1, the plots are intriguing, the scripts have gotten more believable, and execution was always pretty on point but have gotten even more intense and engaging for the audience.
The movie is a must see. If you haven’t gotten into Superhero movies, it’s okay but if you want to give something new a chance now’s the time. You can watch the entire story be told from beginning to end and there are so many ways to find the order to watch all 22 movies so the story flows and you’re not lost.
Happy Binge Watching!

Favorite fics you ever written?
Warning this a long post because I've written a lot of fics.
For Harry Potter:
1.) The Definition of Good. Summary:  After Chamber of Secrets Harry gives Dobby a place to stay. Everything changes.
2.)  Keep it simple, keep it safe. That's all you can do when it's too late. Summary: Harry smiled; it didn't reach his mom's eyes. "There's no need to call me sir professor," Harry quipped once again. This Harry knew. This Harry could take and dare he say it? Liked. Or rather, he liked it compared to the alternative despite his hatred towards the greasy haired wizard before him.
(Harry can't help but remember the chocolate cake slices and hours of looking at photos of Mrs.Figg's cats, the warm - to the point he feels as though they may burn him - embraces from Mrs. Weasley, Dumbledore's soft spoken promises and words that might as well be empty, of Sirius' offer of Harry living with him just gone in a blink of eye because he fell into a veil Harry's godfather could not come out of.)
For Percy Jackson:
1.) I scream too loud when I speak my mind. Summary: Percy Jackson does not accidentally vaporize his pre-algebra teacher and everything else that happens afterward. (I've actually loved writing all the parts of the series but I'm only including this one.)
For Death Note:
1.) To be a Queen. Summary: It's that the queens (Misa, only Misa, because Misa the idiot sees what no one else sees. L says he doesn't swing that way but L wants Light, Kira, but Light is Kira therefore the other king. So duh he can't be L's queen no matter what that pevert wants.) in chess are the most powerful pieces despite the kings (Ryuzaki and Light) being the most important. Because without the king (Kira and L) there's no game, if you defeat the other king you win; Kira wins and he will.
2.) Game over. Summary: Instead of replying to baby Kira Matt takes the cigarette out of his mouth and with a smile (it's weird to smile because Matt never really smiles and it's probably a real ugly ass sight to see) throws his last cigarette onto the Death Note.
Game Over, he thinks and just walks off without so much a word. He wonders briefly what's next. With Light it's easy (boring even). He'd follow his dear dad's footsteps and become a police officer. Probably the best and maybe he'll meet L. Those two assholes deserved each other, Matt decided, but what about him?
(Or the universe gives Matt a restart after dying and he sadly uses his last cigarette on the Death Note.)
For Tokyo Ghoul:
1.) There's a ghost in my lungs. Summary: A series of non-linear conversations where Haise learns about his past, how he became who he was, and people that Kaneki loved. (Haise time travels to the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul. I've only posted one chapter so far.)
For Jessica Jones/Alias:
1.) Rest in pieces our youth (so we might glue it back together again). Crossover with Spiderman Homecoming. Summary: Jessica Campbell and Peter Parker are least likely of friends ever since Jessica came back to school.
For Fullmetal Alchemist:
1.) I've got questions. Summary: Edward smiled thinly, something viscous but not ugly (never ugly, not when it came to her) was the look in his feral eyes.
"Rose," gently, Ed thought, like she was Al or Winry when they were doing stupid shit, "that was a list that represented the complete chemical makeup of a human body for the average adult. It had been calculated to the last microgram, but still there has never been one reported case of successfully creating a human life."
Some people put their faith in gods to be able to live their life; some, like him, lived their life to achieve a goal. There had once been a time when Ed use to pray with mom. He had even prayed after mom had died but had stopped a long time ago.
It wasn't the constant frustration of loose ends (till now, Edward thought, Cornello's ring on his mind). No, he had stop praying even before that. It wasn't even the bastard's sharp jabs that were constant; always there as though Edward would ever let himself forget. What an idiot; how'd that man ever become a Colonel? Besides obviously burning children and women to death that corpses he climbed on to get to the top of the military.
2.) (What is) insanity but the ability to draw the perfect circle? Summary: There's a creak in a board behind him and he whirls around, hands ready to clap. It's Scar. Again there is a difference. Well differences technically. That makes his hand hover, pausing him from clapping. Scar, wearing glasses while inside on a rainy day, stares at the sight before him.
He should take a picture. It'll last longer.
"Are you Edward Elric the Fullmetal State Alchemist?"
Maybe it's because someone has actually him if he's Edward that he answers honestly. "No."
Or Edward is okay with suggesting to partner up with Scar to kill his Fuhrer (who might not be a homunculus in this universe) but isn't okay with Nina going in the rain and getting a cold.
For Star Wars:
1.) Love of a daughter. Summary: "and yet, so far at least we have yet to figure out what you gain from this." It's a question as well as statement. A chance to explain, to come clean on why she - a unknown Sith- had assassinated they're precious, beloved Chancellor (what fools). But how could you come clean when there is so much blood on her hands? Never-mind the sins and blood on Vader and Luke's when her family had been alive.
When she answers it's not because she's announcing her transgressions in hope that her heavy, dirty soul might be saved. One couldn't repent when they didn't feel guilt in their sin.
"For the love of a daughter." Leia pauses and looks back at Anakin and thinks: I did this to avenge you. After thinking that Leia says one more thing - the last thing actually because she nothing else to say after this.
"And you should have been more careful electing your Chancellor. You never know who is Sith." This has double meaning but she's the only person who knows it.
And she's fine with that (no, she isn't).
Leia wonders if her younger self and Luke will ever become the monsters like her Luke had been and the monster she is.
2.) When dreams come true (which they often do when Anakin Skywalker dreams them). Summary:It happens in the day, in the light. A dark masked man with heavy breath that was killing the slave owners and freeing the slaves. No one - not even the Hutts, who were now dead- could stop the droid looking man.
That doesn’t surprise Anakin though. Anakin had seen the stranger’s blade that coated the sands with different colors of blood. A red lightsaber. The man was a Jedi and he had come to free them.
(Or young Anakin's dream comes true just not in the way he dreamt it.)
3.) Nobody does it like Artoo. Summary: Because the droid had just killed Chancellor Palpatine. The man who was the closest thing Anakin had to father.
“Artoo please tell why you just killed Chancellor Palpatine?” He asks, in soft calm voice. He needs to keep a level head. Needs to be the Jedi many claim he cannot be. Deep breathe in. Deep breathe out. He could be calm when all he wanted to do was try to find the person who responsible for rewiring Artoo and show him/or her why it was a bad idea to touch his droid and make his droid kill a person he loved.
Artoo beeps his answer and Ana-
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN PAlPATINE IS DARTH SIDIOUS AND THAT YOU’RE FROM THE FUTURE!?”
4.) Of time travel and relationship blocking. Summary: But he knows the universe is better off by Artoo's travel in time. Palpatine is dead. Artoo had killed the Sith Master that had destroyed too much of his humans’ lives. There was no Empire and Darth Vader did not exist. The twins were raised by their creators. All was good except Leia was coming to age of no longer a child yet not an adult.
Which meant other human boys were becoming attracted to future Senator. Human boys who were not Han Solo. It was becoming rather frustrating - to the point Artoo felt like rolling into a wall- but at least Anakin agreed that these human boys did not belong with his creation. (Sequel to the fic above. Never did write more chapters for this fic but I do adore it.)
For Star Trek:
1.) I appreciate your enthusiasm, but Kodos will not be in this production. Summary: This was not how Jim imagined telling Bones about Tarsus IV. Actually that was a lie. Jim had planned to never tell Bones about Tarsus IV. But so is the life of Jim Kirk (also known as James T. Kirk, JT, Captain, and t'hy'la to Spock and Ambassador Spock who both had yet to tell him what that word meant. A childish part of Jim thinks that Hoshi would tell him if she was still alive before his mood darkens. The memories - the guilt - of that day flashes before his eyes and God does Jim hate drugs.).
2.)  Logically speaking. Summary: "Say mother had been," there had been a pause as Spock tried to find the right words to convey his question, "say mother went through unnecessary strife during her adolescent years and somehow you ended up in the past. Do you allow for her to face this to persevere an already faulted timeline or do you save her?"
By then, Amanda had made her way to her husband side so she could look into Spock's eyes. The question was odd and admittedly out there but her son's eyes said otherwise. Spock's eyes could be compared to an open book and that book told Amanda that this somehow was serious and her son was torn.
(Or the backstory on how Spock sort-of got permission from his father to steal a ship from the Vulcan Science Academy through Amanda Grayson's eyes.)
3.) I prefer to have my nightmares with open eyes. Crossover with Black Butler. Summary: Jimmy, JT, James Tiberius Kirk (whoever the hell he truly is) knows what it's like to adapt just to stay alive, to be whoever he needed to be just to survive. Just to eat.
It makes him laugh and JT doesn't know this but he reminds the demon (Sebastian he once was called and will take the name, the mask, of once again) of another young boy who the world had destroyed. Who had laugh a bitter laugh because that was all he could do. Crying, after all, did nothing. (Maybe one day I will write that Shinigami!Jim fic. If I ever do I will gift it to ShortyKatezey.)
4.) I need you, I need you, I need you right now. Don't leave me alone. Summary: It doesn’t matter in the end that this universe’s blue eyed James T. Kirk isn’t Spock Prime’s Jim. He still feels Jim-so familiar to his Captain, his Admiral, his Jim, his thyla yet so differnet, so angry, so broken - death.
It should have been me (it had been him in his universe) is Spock’s first thought after he momentarily gets over the wave, the crash of emotions he feels. His next thought is: I am not fine. (This is Spock Prime reacting to Jim's death in Into Darkness.)
5.) Of bored school boys and a death god. Crossover with Death Note. Summary: Ryuk drops the Death Note and a bored but brilliant beyond his years teenage boy picks it up. Sound familiar? Except it's not. JT is many things but a God complex isn't one of them.
For The Vampire Diaries:
1.) When did you dance with death? Summary: When did they all die? When did this become their lives? Was Damon to blame? Stefan to be blamed? Was Katherine to blame? Or Klaus to blame? Were Klaus' parents to blame for trying to keep their kids alive and eventually making them into monsters? Whose to blame for the fact they're all murders instead of simply, normal teenager?
And you know what? They're going to be dead for sure instead of just their morality and innocence having kicked the bucket. There's no vampire blood in their system that could cure them from what Klaus will inflict; Katherine ran from Klaus for hundreads of years and her family was slaughtered just because she wanted to live. They had killed Kol - Klaus' own brother - and trapped him with the burnt corpse.
2.) Revenge is best served with condoms. Summary: "I know who you are. You're the tasty little thing my older brother has come to truly fancy." Tasty little thing. Caroline froze; those words replaying in her head except in British accent (the only accent she truly had thing for).
For Yuri on Ice:
1.) The downside of love. Summary: Soulmates that share the bruises on their other's skin can have a downside if you haven't met them yet. Katsuki Yuuri learns this the hard way.

4 Web Design Principles Hollywood Reboots Can Teach Us
At least once every day, some designer somewhere in the world will look at something made months or years ago; failing that, some executive will get the bright idea that they can make their mark on a company and the world by changing something that already exists, instead of making something new. One or both of these people might get this sort of itch in the back of their head, accompanied by a sense of dissatisfaction and ill-defined purpose.
The itch will get itchier, the dissatisfaction will grow, and the purpose will begin to form until, one day, they blurt out the words: I think we should redesign our website (and/or make a King Kong movie that focuses on the human characters).
Redesigning a site is not unlike rebooting a movie or TV show. They’re both massively complex creative endeavors that attempt to draw in an existing audience while also appealing to a new one. They’re also both fraught with dangers, as while a good redesign or reboot can bring life back to something that has aged poorly, they can also just flop hard.
As designers, we have an opportunity to learn from the successes and failures of Hollywood. It’s not a one-to-one comparison, but there are enough similarities to make a few observations:
1. You Need to Know if Anyone Wants This
Some people might not know that the original version of The Mummy was actually made in 1932, and starred the legendary Boris Karloff. Brendan Fraser brought his signature charm to the story again in 1999, over sixty years later. A lot can happen in sixty years, including a World War, a couple more wars, the invention of the computer as we know it, and the invention of redesigning websites as a concept.
So when the 1999 movie showed up, it premiered in what was practically a new world. The stars were likable, the Indiana Jones influence set it apart from its predecessor, but it kept the same sense of adventure, with a few actually kind-of-scary moments. The world was ready for it.
And then in 2017, someone decided to reboot The Mummy again with an eye toward creating a whole new franchise of monster movies. But it was a lackluster movie at best, despite the talent that went into it, and people could remember the heart that went into the Brendan Frasier version all too easily, and the comparison hurt the new movie. The world was not ready for it. Going too fast hurt The Mummy Franchise, and don’t even get me started on all of the Spiderman reboots. That was ridiculous.
If you’re going to redesign your site, don’t do it too soon. And when you do get around to it, make sure it’s actually bringing something people want to the table. Speaking of which…
2. You Need to Know What Made the Original Special
Let’s take a look at Total Recall, for example. The original was a fun sci-fi romp that combined light social commentary, silliness, and Arnold being Arnold. Replace Arnold with a star of lesser charisma, and the silly movie falls apart. Take away the silliness, and it’s a generic sci-fi action film. It still would have been good for its time, probably, but probably not as beloved as it is now.
The 2012 remake couldn’t get Arnold back, and as good as Colin Farrell and the rest of the cast were, they couldn’t carry the movie alone. That delightful silliness was also gone, replaced by light touches of sarcasm. The mild social commentary was still there, but it was so shallow as to be easily dismissed.
They took a formula that worked, and removed at least two-thirds of it. Before you ever touch a website with the intent of redesigning it, you want to know why people like it at all. This means user research, and actually talking to users. God knows that if they’d polled the fans of the original movie, they might have kept some of its charm intact.
3. Your Audience May Change
People don’t usually want the same things for their entire lives. Times, people, and sensibilities change. Take the new Lost in Space series on Netflix. The original started in 1965, only one year before the original Star Trek launched. It featured TV tropes and family dynamics that were considered acceptable in its day; and so it unsurprisingly lasted longer than the forward-looking Star Trek.
The new series can’t rely on those older family dynamics. Audiences expect a bit more drama in their sci-fi, a more realistic and nuanced approach to characters, and boy oh boy did Robot ever get a makeover. Dr. Smith, too. Audiences (particularly Netflix customers) have also come to expect a more diverse cast of characters, and so that’s what they’re getting.
All in all, it’s a fairly successful reboot that combines the core concept of the show with the changed expectations of its audience. Do I have to make an analogy to website redesign, here? Well I will: how has your userbase changed since your site was launched? Do you know? If you don’t, you should find out right now.
4. The Medium May Change Too
With a solid-enough concept and an enduring audience, you could more or less keep telling the same story; but even then, the medium will change. Here we come to the many iterations of James Bond. They don’t technically count as “reboots”, but hey… they illustrate my point. Who doesn’t want to be smooth, sophisticated, and dangerous when they need to be? Bond’s time may come one day, but for now, the saga continues.
Even so, the way James Bond films get made, from a technical standpoint, has changed often. It had to. With advancements in technology, refinements in cinematic storytelling, and cultural shifts, the Bond movies of today look very different from the first bond films, while being much the same in terms of substance.
A redesign of your site doesn’t have to mean changing its core philosophy, but it might be worth it to refine your design by rebuilding it with newer design and coding principles in mind. If you have a solid core design to work from, then iteration—rather than a full redesign—might be the better option.

I recently read the first 3 volumes of Stephen Franck’s SILVER, and today it was announced that the 4th (and final) volume titled THE SEARCH FOR DRACULA’S LOST TREASURE is now on Kickstarter. SILVER is a “globe trotting graphic novel series” that Franck has been working on for the past four years, and the new volume will wrap up the series.
For those not familiar with the series (like myself until I read it), it’s about a a vampire hunter (Rosalyn) who just happens to be a descendant of Professor Abraham Van Helsing, with the story taking place 30 years after Van Helsing visited Dracula’s castle with Rosalyn teaming up with some con-men to rob rich vampires in Europe.
More information as well as art is below courtesy of their press release.
The Russ Manning Award-nominated SILVER Graphic Novel Series Concludes
The Fourth and Final Volume of Stephan Franck’s Graphic Novel Caper About
The Search for Dracula’s Lost Treasure is Now on Kickstarter
Stephan Franck has worked on some of the most beloved animated films of all time, including The Iron Giant, How to Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me —and his passion for storytelling extends from the silver screen to comic books and graphic novels. Over the course of the last four years, Franck has been writing, illustrating and self publishing SILVER, a globe-trotting graphic novel series that mashes up the world of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula with action, adventure, humor, pulp storytelling and modern sensibilities. Told over the course of 4 volumes (and a stand alone novella), Franck has created an unforgettable cast and a compelling caper that picks up 30 years after Professor Abraham Van Helsing visited Dracula’s castle. Now Van Helsing’s descendant, the mysterious vampire hunter Rosalyn, is teaming up with a ragtag group of con men for a high stakes heist to rob Europe’s richest vampires. Will they succeed, and live off their take from this one last job? All will be revealed in the fourth and final volume of SILVER, which Franck and his company Dark Planet Comics are funding via a Kickstarter campaign.
In SILVER, a group of criminals discover the late Jonathan Harker’s secret ledger, which discloses the existence of an exotic treasure of silver hidden in Dracula’s castle. Finnigan, the group’s leader, knows a retirement plan when he sees it, so he’s willing to do whatever it takes to pull off the biggest heist of the last ten centuries—even if that means allying himself with the mysterious, sword-wielding vampire hunter Sledge, aka Rosalind Van Helsing.
This year, Dark Planet Comics released a Free Comic Book Day Edition of the first issue of SILVER. “My hope is that fans who love old-fashioned storytelling that’s chock full of action and adventure, mystery and humor, discover SILVER in time to be a part of the epic finale.” The series has already attracted the notice of comic book creators including Tim Sale, Bill Sienkiewicz and Jim Lee, and has been widely praised with coverage from an array of outlets including NPR, THE NERDIST, HORROR NEWS NETWORK, NEWSARAMA and COMICON.
Fans who back the new Kickstarter can get digital editions, all four trade paperbacks individually, a signed slipcase featuring all four trade paperbacks, the acclaimed novella ROSALYND, an audiobook of ROSALYND and limited edition prints by or done in collaboration with three incredible artists: Marvel comics and Kickstarter sensation Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms.Marvel, Spiderman, Code Monkey Saves World), animator and bandes dessinées artist Rodolphe Guenoden (Kung Fu Panda, Ma Reverence), and superstar illustrator Mel Milton.
When he’s not writing and drawing comics, Franck is an Executive Producer and the Head of Story for the PLAYMOBIL Movie for Lionsgate. Previously, he worked as a supervising animator on the cult classic film THE IRON GIANT and as a key story contributor to DESPICABLE ME. Franck also co-created the award-winning animated TV Series CORNEIL & BERNIE (Nicktoons, Hub Network), and received an Annie Award nomination for Best Director in a TV Program, for the special SMURFS: THE LEGEND OF SMURFY HOLLOW.
If funded through Kickstarter, pledges will be delivered to backers this fall. The SILVER Volume 4 Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/darkplanetcomics/345093214?ref=492299&token=9308655b) is live as of May 22nd and runs for 30 days.
For updates, follow Dark Planet Comics on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
This is what people are saying about Stephan Franck’s SILVER:
“Writer/artist Stephan Franck is firing on all cylinders…. Stylish black-and-white art, and a smart, charmingly roguish point-of-view-character draw you in.” —  NPR
“With SILVER, Stephan Franck shows how much excitement can be packed into a fast-moving, thrill-filled story… a really, really fun ride.”—Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween)
“Stunning.”—NEWSARAMA
“SILVER is so big, bold, and juicy! I absolutely love this book!” — Bill Sienkiewicz (Elektra: Assassin)
“Spun out of Bram Stoker’s literary classic Dracula, SILVER retains the original novel intact at its core, while extending its world in every possible direction.” — HORROR NEWS NETWORK
“Great book!”—Jim Lee (Batman)
“A beautifully drawn and masterfully told noir/heist story with a teasing side of the supernatural that constantly kept me surprised”—Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel)
“Franck knows his customers, what they expect, and he gives it to them in spades.”—AIN’T IT COOL NEWS
“SILVER has all of the elements you crave and with a story that you’ll simply devour.”—David Gallaher (High Moon)
“May be the ultimate gothic noir comic saga.”—COMICON
“Impressive. A Mignola-esque reshuffling of history with a fanciful legerdemain that keeps the story light on its toes.—Samuel Sattin (Legend)
“You’ve seen adaptations and re-imaginings of author Bram Stoker’s seminal work Dracula, but never quite like this. Writer and artist Stephan Franck has taken the Dracula mythos and the foundation that Stoker built to create a unique yarn of horror and heist in his story Silver. The conceit sees an Ocean’s 11-esque caper that has con men and women eyeing the ultimate score: treasure from Dracula’s castle.”—FREAK SUGAR
“There may not be a better original vampire comic book in America than SILVER.”—COMIC BOOK BIN
ABOUT SILVER: VOLUME 1 (2014):
1931, New York City. Meet Finnigan, ethically challenged master-thief, and his partners in crime Mullins and Brantley, as they rob the mysterious Harker foundation. What was supposed to be their last job turns into a narrow escape from the FBI, and Finn loses the team’s retirement money. However, Finn discovers a mysterious ancient silver bar, and the late Jonathan Harker’s secret ledger, which discloses the existence of a fabulous treasure made of silver, hidden away in Dracula’s castle. Finn assembles a crew of talented but broken misfits to pull off the heist of the last ten centuries. On top of Mullins and Brantley, the team includes Rosalynd “Sledge” Van Helsing, who continues the family tradition, but has fallen on hard times, Hamilton Morley, a washed out burlesque actor/con man, Maitre Moineaux, an old forger who may not live long enough to see the job through, and Tao, a ten year old boy with the gift of second sight.
ABOUT SILVER: VOLUME 2 (2015):
The team boards the Orient Express, which is filled with Vampires travelling to Dracula’s castle. Romantic tension builds between Finn and Sledge, but she may have an ulterior motive for being on the team. We also learn more about Finn’s broken past, as it quickly becomes clear that Tao needs a role-model in Finn…something that Finn is not equipped to provide. For years, Drac has been in a funk–caught between his morbid obsession for the Heart Of The Dragon (the missing silver bar stolen by Harker) and his feelings for Mina, which are still haunting him. To pacify his subjects and prove he’s moved on, Drac has agreed to take a bride.
