Ocean and Alcohol Pt. 3 ✘JJ Maybank✘
Part One! Part Two!
Tumblr media
(not my gif. All credit to pterparkcr!)  Part 3/? Word Count - 6371 Warnings - Abuse mentions, underage drinking, swearing, steaming fluff (is that thing? idk)  Synopsis - The party at Sarah Cameron’s has a rocky start, but ends rather well in your opinion.  Taglist - @lovelymaybankk A/N - As with the other parts in this series, it’s in the second person with a named character! Thank you so much to lovelymaybankk for being a wonderful supporter, I really appreciate it! If anyone wants to see the playlist I listen to while writing these, let me know. Thank you all, I love you a million!
When you finally got home, your dad was sitting on the bottom of the stairs, just like Kid had been the night before. “Hey, Dad,” you said, setting your keys in the bowl by the door. “Hey, sweetheart.” From the tone in his voice, you knew a teary-eyed apology was on its way. You groaned inwardly as you shut your eyes. “I...I wanted to apologize for last night.” “It’s not a big deal, Dad,” you said, opening your eyes and putting on a smile. “But it is.” He pushed himself off the stairs and took a few hurried steps forward. He stopped when he saw you flinch and step backward. Tears brimmed his eyes and he covered his mouth with his hands. “I hurt my baby girl and my boy and I….” He broke down into tears, falling to one knee as he sobbed. You grit your teeth, trying to blink away a few tears of your own. He did this almost every time. He either pretended like it never happened or he cried, there was never another option. You preferred the first because you never felt obligated to comfort him, like you did now. “Dad.” You walked over to him and dropped down next to him. You wrapped your arms around him and he leaned into you, clinging to your arm. Every piece of your heart shattered as you heard him cry. His tears soaked through your pajama shirt. You hid a sob of your own by planting a kiss onto his head. Keeping your breathing steady, you slowly peeled him off of you, putting your hands over his teary cheeks. “There is one way you can make it up to me,” you said, plastering on a smile. “Anything,” he choked out. “Anything.” “Sarah is having a get together tonight and she wants me to come.” “You...go out?” You heard the concern in his voice so you pushed harder. “You know how much I like Sarah, and I know you want me to make better friends. This is me trying.” When it was clear he was still mulling it over in your mind, you pulled the last stop you knew would guarantee a yes. “And...Rafe will be there tonight.” “Rafe?” The tears were immediately gone from his eyes. You nodded, though your stomach sickened. “I thought you hated him.” “He’s not as bad as I thought.” A lie. He was worse. “Well, if someone responsible like Rafe is there….” You resisted the urge to laugh. “As long as it isn’t a party, you can go.” A grin spread across your lips. You leaned down and kissed your dad on the cheek, just one more foot in his goodwill door. “Thank you, Daddy.” You helped him to his feet and brushed away a few of his stray tears. “I love you, sweetheart.” “Love you.” As soon as you were upstairs, you vomited the words out of your mouth. While you were glad that you had been given permission to go to the party, you hated how low you had to go to get there. Making your dad bend to your will was generally easy and very rarely did you actually feel bad about it. After all, his favorite past time was beating you senseless, so why couldn’t you manipulate him to get the things you wanted? It seemed like a pretty fair game. You brushed your teeth twice before heading back to your room to start homework. As soon as you opened your computer, you knew that you were going to get very little done. Your mind went, as it usually did these days, straight to JJ. You weren’t sure how to feel. You fought the last time you spoke to him, but you also spent the entire night thinking about seeing him at this party. And then you saw him kiss another girl and then spent the entire day wanting to murder him. And now you were just double confused because he seemed ready enough to introduce you to one of his best friends. Your mind was all over the place and none of those places was homework. In hopes to drown out your own thoughts and focus better, you turned on some music. But then the song that you and JJ ‘danced’ to came on and you were thrown into all over again. You found yourself humming and tapping your foot instead of typing out your essay. Eventually, frustration overcame you and you tossed your computer onto your pillow and shut off the music. You spent the next few hours trying to not think about JJ and focus on your school. It had never been hard to focus before. You knew you needed to go to a good school to get a good job to be able to take care of Kid once your dad was out of the picture, and that meant getting good grades now. Homeschooling wasn’t too hard for you, but if you didn’t get most of your work done today, you were going to suffer for it later. JJ and his stupid smile were really throwing a wrench in every single one of your plans. The time came for you to pick Kid up from school, but he texted you asking if you could pick him up from a friend’s in an hour or two. As long as you got him home before Dad got home, you usually let him go and do whatever he wanted after school. You wanted your brother to have the social life you never did. You didn’t have a big sister to cover for you or pick you up from wherever when you were his age. But that didn’t matter. You were going to be the big sister that you always wished you had.
You somehow managed to focus long enough to finish the essay and start on your math homework. It didn’t take long for Kid to text you to tell you to come and pick him up. The entire drive there and back, you were worried that you would somehow run into JJ like you had before. “Are you okay?” Kid asked, looking up from his comic. “Hmm? Yeah, oh yeah.” “Why do you keep looking out the window?” “No reason.”
Now consciously aware of your wandering eyes, you tried to keep your gaze fixed on the road ahead. The sun was starting to go down and the only thing you should be worried about right now was getting Kid home quickly and finishing your work, not JJ. Luckily, you made it home without any unwanted visitors and a few minutes before your Dad got home. Kid sat on the ground in your room munching on some potato chips while the both of you worked on school work. You heard your Dad pull into the driveway. You and Kid glanced at each other and shared a knowing smile. It always felt like a victory when Kid was able to do something without Dad finding out. After a few minutes, your dad knocked on your door and opened it. “Hey, Kiddos.” “Hey, Dad.” “Tacos good for tonight?” “Sure,” Kid said. “Elm?” “I’m going over to Sarah’s, remember? They’ll have food there,” you said with a smile. Your dad’s face fell for a moment.
“Ah, yes.” “And I’m sure if I don’t get enough to eat, Rafe would be more than happy to get me something,” you added, praying that your dad worshiped Rafe enough to not double back on his word. “Rafe, yes. I’m sure he will.” He sighed. “How was work?” You asked, hoping to change the subject. “Good, good. Busy.”
“That’s good.” The air went stale when no one said anything else. “I’ll call you when dinner is ready, Bradford,” your dad said, looking down at Kid. He nodded, returning to his homework. “Thanks, Dad,” you said as he turned and shut the door.
You spent the next hour finishing up as much homework as you could before getting ready. You couldn’t remember the last time you put real effort into a party outfit. But this time you tried on at least five different outfits, asking Kid each time if it was alright before finally landing on something you liked. “Is that boy going to be at Sarah’s?” Kid asked, now sitting on your bed as you checked yourself out in the mirror again. “What boy?” You eyed your brother carefully. “That boy that was here a few weeks ago. The one who snuck out when Dad and I got back from our trip?”
You let out a deep sigh. “I don’t know,” you said, mentally punching yourself for overthinking things again. It didn’t matter if JJ was going to be at Sarah’s party because you had no intention of talking to him. Either you were going to end up crying (again) or you were going to punch him, and you were sick of crying. Even if JJ was there, you weren’t sure why you put so much attention into your outfit. You dropped to the floor, pressing your hands against your eyes. You heard Kid climb down from your creaky bed. He sat next to you and bumped your shoulder with his. You let out another sigh and leaned your head on his shoulder. “I’m sorry,” you whispered, afraid that your voice would break if you spoke any louder. “For what?” “For bringing my silly drama into your peaceful Friday night,” you said, lifting your head and trying to give a smile. Kid shook his head.
“You go get prettied up for this boy, El.”
A smile broke out on your face and you felt your cheeks heaten. Kid bumped your shoulder again and you scrambled upward to grab your makeup from your bathroom. Kid turned up the music and jumped back onto your bed. You bobbed your head, sitting in front of your mirror, as you finished your look. It was nearly seven by the time you were finished. “Ready?” You asked Kid. He looked up from his comic and pursed his lips, checking to make sure everything was in place. “Ready,” he confirmed with a smile. You walked over and kissed the top of his head, an unusually cheery bounce in your step. “Bye, Kid,” you said. “Be back by 12!” Kid said, deepening his voice to mimic your dad. You laughed as you slung your bag over your shoulder on the way to the door. “Bye!” You hurried down the stairs, smile glowing on your face. “You’ll be careful tonight?” Dad said from the kitchen. You startled and turned around. “Yeah, Dad. It’s just a few girls, there’s nothing to worry about.” “And Rafe?” You were about up to your ears with all the talk about Rafe, but if it meant you could go to this goddamn party, you would kiss up as much as you needed. “Yes,” you said, trying not to let your dad see the exasperated sigh you wanted to let out as you said it. “And Rafe.”
His final nod said that you had made it past the last wall of permission. You had to keep yourself from running out the door as fast as you could. Once you were outside, you bolted from the door all the way to your car. Blasting the music in your car got you singing at the top of your lungs as you drove, probably faster than you should have, to Sarah’s house.
Tannyhill wasn’t very far from your own house, only a 15 minute drive, but with anticipation gurgling in your stomach, it felt like forever. By the time you reached the house, you could tell that the party was in full bloom. A sudden spark of anxiety shot through you. What exactly were you supposed to be doing here? The only person you really liked was Sarah, but she had all of her own friends. So you sat in your car for five minutes before finally plucking up the courage to go inside. You were beyond thrilled when the first person you saw offered you a red cup with vodka. “Please,” you said and downed the entire thing. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to be taking alcohol from strangers at a party, but your nerves were already so fried from worry that you didn’t care who you took what from, as long as you were buzzed before anyone started talking to you. It didn’t take long for you to find Sarah, and to your surprise, she actually left her friends to come over to you. “Elma!” She said with a smile. “Just call me Elm,” you said as she neared. “Elma is a stupid name.”
Sarah giggled, already plastered, and handed you another cup of alcohol, which you gladly took. She dragged you over to her other friends, who gladly accepted you. You could tell they were all drunk off their asses because they took the time to speak to you, which wasn’t something most Kooks took pleasure in doing.
Two hours later, you heard hollering from outside that could mean only one thing; the pogue take over. Like the idiot he was, JJ was the first one in the door with a kegger in his hands. How he managed to carry the thing on his own like it was nothing was beyond you. Everyone in the house was silent for a moment and part of you was afraid they would all attack. But then a large cry of cheers erupted and you knew for a fact that everyone was drunk out of their minds. You were going to join in on the cheering when you saw the girl that JJ kissed yesterday walk in right behind him. Maybe it was the alcohol or the deep-rooted, unresolved trauma you buried deep in your chest, but you stood in a sudden flurry of anger and marched outside. You were on your fifth cup of beer and you could feel it affecting you. You should have tried to find the place where the music was loudest and dance out the alcohol, but all you managed to do was step outside and breathe in the weed smelling air. You just needed to breathe for a moment, you told yourself. You were being overdramatic and you needed to calm down. Of course, the universe was still punishing you for whatever the hell it was you did wrong because your moment of calm was soon interrupted by the one boy you assured your father would protect you, but who was also the same boy who was most likely to kill you. “What are you doing here, Elma?” You heaved out a disgusted sigh and hung your head. “I’m enjoying the party, Rafe,” you said, taking another drink from your cup.
“I don’t want you in my house.”
“First of all, this isn’t your house. Second, your sister invited me here. And lastly, as you can see-” You motioned up to the sky. “I am clearly not inside.” Rafe grabbed your wrist from behind and you spun around to face him, whatever joking mood you were in fading instantly to anger. “Don’t touch me,” you spat. “Get out.” “You can’t tell me what to do.” “What are you going to do, hit me again?” “Yeah, I might.”
You were seconds away from doing just that, when someone interrupted. “Let her go, Rafe,” JJ said, standing a few feet away. You rolled your eyes, downing the rest of your beer. “This is none of your business, pogue,” Rafe said, not taking his eyes off of you. You tilted your head to the side, one of the worst ideas you ever had popping into your head. “Rafe-” “Hey, Maybank,” you said, turning to look at him. “Shut up and learn to read the room, maybe.” Without giving him the chance to say anything, you stood on your toes and kissed Rafe full on the mouth. Did it make you want to vomit? Sure. Would you have rathered punch him in the face? Yes. Did it make you feel any better at all?    Hell no. Especially when Rafe kissed you back. You waited to hear the door open and shut again before pulling away from Rafe. He lingered where he was for a moment, eyes shut and lips puckered. You cringed at him and wiped your lips with the back of your hand. “God, you’re pathetic,” you said, walking away from him. You went back inside to grab another drink, taking one shot of something before grabbing another cup of beer. You walked away from the house, wind stinging your eyes and making them water. At least, that’s what you told yourself to convince yourself that you weren’t about to cry. You walked out to the docks where you hoped you could be alone. You sat on the edge, kicking your feet back and forth over the water, your untouched beer beside you. Your mind was like mud, an unfortunate side effect of not spending your drunk energy on dancing. You could barely finish one coherent thought, which was never good. Finally, after a few minutes of trying to have a dramatic existential crisis without being able to think properly, you had enough. You slid off your sandals, setting them beside the beer. Taking a few steps away from the edge of the docks, you ran and jumped into the cold marsh. The chill kickstarted your system again. It was like a reboot. The mud was washed clean from your mind and you felt the return of your senses. You stayed beneath the water as long as you could. Once your lungs started to scream for air, you made for the surface. You gasped in air once you broke through, treading water to keep you afloat. Now shivering and wet, you swam over to the dock and reached up to pull yourself out. To your surprise, there was a hand waiting for you, offering your help out. You looked up at JJ, who stood with his other hand in his pocket. You took his hand and he pulled you out. Standing beside him, you were suddenly unsure of what to say. After spending hours thinking about it, you were silent when it really mattered. You started shivering almost as soon as the night chill hit your skin, but you tried to hide it. “I have a sweater in John B’s car, if you want to borrow it,” he said. Apparently your hiding skills weren’t at their prime. You nodded slowly and followed as he headed off toward the beat-up, old van that the Pogues drove around in. Neither of you said anything for a while. “Why’d you drive off this morning?” He asked suddenly. You turned your head to look at him with a cocked brow. “That’s your only question?” He shrugged so you let out a sigh and decided to answer. “Well, the last time we spoke, we didn’t really finish on the best of terms and then I saw you kiss that girl and I then I was, well I hit my head last night pretty hard so I was out of it and then Pope was there-” “Pope just happened to be there.” “Yeah? Well-” You tucked a piece of hair behind your ear as you approached the car. “I guess I just freaked.” JJ pulled open the side door of the car and grabbed his sweater, handing it to you. You held it for a moment, unsure if putting on his sweater was the best idea. You were about to give yourself a full-blown essay about all the reasons it would be a bad idea when a sudden bluster of wind blew past, sending shivers up your spine. You quickly pulled the sweater on over your head. It took all of your remaining brain cells working together to not think about how warm it was or how much it smelled like him. “I didn’t kiss her,” JJ said as he slid the door shut. “What?” “That girl. I know what you’re talking about, but I didn’t kiss her.” Guilt turned your cheeks red. “Oh.” You looked down as the two of you started to walk away from the van. “I’m sorry then.” “For what?” You stifled a smile. “I may or may not have spent that entire day plotting how to kill you and dispose of your body so no one could ever find it,” you said, a smile pulling at your lips. JJ laughed and looked at the ground before looking back at you. “How would you do it?” “Let’s see,” you said, pulling your hands inside the sleeves of JJ’s sweater. “I think I settled on drowning you. You see, if you kill someone and then throw their body into the water, too much water gets in their lungs. Any coroner could see it from a mile away that something fishy happened.” “Duly noted.” “Yeah, and then I would take you and your boat out somewhere and capsize it somehow.” “Man, remind me to never piss you off again.”
You let out a laugh. When the smiles fell from both your lips, you spoke again. “I’m also sorry I kissed Rafe.”
“I’m pretty sure that hurt you more than it hurt me,” JJ said with a laugh. You stopped walking and put a hand on his wrist. He turned back toward you and the look in his eyes told you enough. “I really am sorry.” With a soft sigh, he pulled his hands from his pockets and placed them just below your jaw, tilting your face up toward his. He leaned down and instead of kissing your lips, he placed a long kiss against your forehead. Eyes fluttering shut, you breathed in a deep breath. You saw a flash from behind your eyelids. A storm must be coming. You didn’t care. JJ pulled back for just long enough to look into your eyes before dipping back down and kissing you properly. This wasn’t like before. It wasn’t needy or desperate or full of desire. It was something else. Something softer. Something far more terrifying. There was another flash. “You wanna get out of here?” You asked, looking up at him with a smile. He nodded and you grabbed his hand, leading him toward your car. “You left your shoes,” he said, pointing back toward the dock.    “Oh, yeah.” You took one step in that direction, but he stopped you. “I’ll go get them.” Before you could say anything, he took off toward the dock. Watching him run toward your shoes, you felt a smile slowly pull its way up your lips until you were grinning like an idiot. A question floated at the front of your skull, a question you refused to fully ask, even in your own mind. When JJ returned to you, shoes in one hand, he smiled. “Shall we?” “We shall.”
The casual stroll to the car felt just as natural to you as breathing. Your hand itched to be held in his, but you didn’t want to push your luck tonight. Besides, holding hands was way too personal for you. You didn’t want to hold his hand. That would be so silly. You slid into the front seat of your car as JJ climbed in beside you. “You know, I’ve never seen a kook with an uglier car,” he said, closing the door. You looked at him and let out a confused laugh. “In the best way possible, of course.” “I’ll have you know,” you said as you put the keys into the ignition and started your car. “This baby could outrun that stinky van of yours any day.” “Hey, don’t insult John B’s van. We love that thing.” “Yeah, whatever.” You pulled out of the driveway, maneuvering around the other cars without hitting a single one. “Where are we going?” He asked. “What, are you afraid I’m actually going to kill you?” “I wouldn’t put it past you.” You let out a mock-hurt laugh, your heart hammering at the sound of his own. “I’m glad I let off murder vibes,” you said. JJ leaned toward you. “You wouldn’t hurt a fly,” he said before kissing your cheek. “Excuse me?” You were trying not to take your eyes off the road, but JJ sitting so close to you and smiling like he was made it very difficult. “Didn’t you see me beat the shit out of Rafe?” “Yeah. Once. And you were drunk.” “Oh, please, I’ve done it a hundred times. I practically grew up with the guy,” you said. “Really? “Um, yeah. You really think the only practice I get fighting is when I’m swinging at my dad?” You scoffed. “No, sir. Rafe and I have been beating the shit out of each other since we had the muscle strength to swing our fists.” “Now that is interesting,” JJ said, leaning against his closed fist. “You find that interesting?” “Interesting, terrifying, sexy. Whatever you want to call it.” “I bet you I could beat your ass,” you said. “Was that a threat or a challenge?” “Both.” “Pull over and we’ll settle this now.” “Hold your horses, bucko. I’m almost to our destination.” JJ laughed, leaning his chair back. “There’s the bucko thing again.” “Shut up.” A few minutes later, you pulled off the main road and onto a narrow dirt road. “I am starting to feel like you are taking me somewhere to kill me.” “Hey, I already told you my murder plans and we turned away from the ocean, not toward it. For now, you can be pretty certain I’m not going to kill you.” JJ turned to look at you with a smile. “For now,” he said in a fake ominous tone. When you finally came to a stop, you were parked on an empty plane. With nothing but grass below you and nothing but stars above. You reached into your backseat to grab a few blankets you kept stored back there for the times you and Kid did this exact same thing. You slid out of the car with a giddy grin on your face, JJ following after you. You tossed the blankets on the ground but had no time to do anything else before JJ tackled you to the ground from behind. “What the hell?” You cried, trying to push him off of you but only succeeding in getting more tangled in the blankets. “I thought we were going to see who wins a fight?” JJ said, pinning you down and hovering over you. You glared at him. “Oh, it’s on.” You spent the next few minutes rolling around half in the blankets, half on the grass. The fight ended when you found yourself straddling JJ, your hands against his shoulders to keep him pinned. “I think,” you said, breathless. “I think I win.”
“I let you win.” “Oh, really?” “Yeah.” You breathed heavily through your nose and sat back, moving your hands from his shoulders so he could move if he wanted to. But he didn’t. “Can I tell you something?” JJ sat up on his elbows. “Go for it.”
“The reason I was so quick to think the worst about you when I saw you with that girl, I guess-” You paused to give yourself a moment to breathe. “I guess it was easier that way.” “How do you mean?” “Well, if I could convince myself you were just messing around with me I felt like I could still walk away without feeling hurt. I figured that I could just forget everything and move on and go back to living like I was before. I’m just...not used to caring about someone other than Kid and especially not so quickly,” you said. “So you care about me.” JJ smirked and made a face at you. You rolled your eyes, not even trying to keep down a smile. “Well, shit, Maybank,” you said, mimicking his smile. “What else am I supposed to do when you kiss me the way you do?” “Can I tell you something?” JJ asked. “Only if it’s appropriate.”
“I spent the first week after I was at your house trying not to think about you,” he said. Your heart started to pound, lost somewhere deep in your stomach. “Kinda failed at that one, didn’t I?” “Look at us, two people with emotional issues talking about our feelings.” You needed to say something to cover up the fact that your stomach was currently doing turns like some kind of freaking ballerina. “Aw, hell. The world’s going to end.”
JJ lay back, placing his hands on your hips and looking up at the stars. “Do you wanna know something?” He glanced at you instead of answering. “I don’t want to kiss anyone else. Just you” JJ worked his way to sitting up, sliding you into his lap. He moved one hand to your cheek, running his thumb along your cheekbone. “Purple,” he said. You tilted your head to the side and blinked. “My favorite color. You asked me to think about it and I decided my favorite color is purple.” You smiled, pulling your lower lip between your teeth to try and cover it up. “Purple is a wonderful color.” JJ pressed his lips against yours. Instead of the ocean, this time you felt the expanse of the sky above you. Maybe the universe hadn’t been trying to lead you away from JJ, but push you right toward him. The kiss was short, leaving you wanting, but it was obvious that JJ had something else that he wanted to say. “I don’t want to kiss anyone else either,” he said, his eyes still closed, almost as if he was afraid to say it to your face. This time you didn’t smile and instead pulled him in for another kiss. Nothing else mattered. You were sinking deeper and deeper into the ocean, but you could breathe perfectly fine. You were no longer drowning. You weren’t exactly sure when the kiss shifted from something like a contract to full of macking, but it did. Maybe it was when JJ moved his other hand to cradle your head or when you pulled his shirt off...somewhere in there. If you had still been in the car, the windows would have steamed up from how hot your breath was. When JJ dropped his lips to your neck, he moved his hands down as well, lifting his sweater just enough to get his hands against your stomach and back. His hands were calloused, rough, but it felt good against your skin. “JJ,” you breathed. You could tell that he appreciated being called by his first name from the way his hands curled against you, his teeth grazing your neck.    “Do it again,” he whispered, his lips ghosting over your skin as he made his way back up to your lips. “JJ.”
You knew it was dangerous to push your limits like you were. The last two times this happened, you had gotten out of this before the anxiety took over completely. Last time JJ was aware of what he was doing, in control of how far he was going. But now, by where his hands were and by the way he clung to you, you weren’t sure he was thinking about that right now. And you weren’t sure you could stop yourself before you were overcome. At this moment in time, there was no fear, there was just JJ. You would have pushed and pushed and pushed until you were right on the brink. But you were already overboard, why not go deeper? Luckily, the universe was looking out for you. A deep thunderclap echoed across the sky, making you jump and a quiet shriek flew from your mouth. JJ laughed, just as out of breath as you were. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of a little lightning?” He asked. You glared at him. “I was preoccupied,” you said, putting your arms around his neck. Just before you kissed him again, the sky let out another burst of thunder. You sighed, closing your eyes. “I guess Mother Nature is cockblocking me,” JJ said. You dropped your forehead to his shoulder before rolling off of him. “I guess.” “We should get in your car before it starts to rain.”
“Man, I really wanted to look at the stars,” you sighed, starting to collect the blankets off of the ground. “Well, maybe you shouldn’t have gotten distracted.” “Maybe you shouldn’t have been so distracting.” He helped you move the blankets into the car. You barely had time to shut the front door before the rain started to pour. You pulled a mirror out of your purse and caught a glimpse of your neck, which was absolutely riddled with hickeys. “Dude,” you whispered, tracing one with your finger. You glanced over to JJ, who was hiding a smile behind one of his hands. He shrugged at you. You smacked his arm, revealing the laughter he was trying to keep in. “You’re lucky I carry concealer or I would be murdered in the morning.” “Hey, listen-” “What? What’s your excuse?” “You have very nice skin.” “My skin is nice so you have to give me a million and a half hickeys?” JJ shrugged again, laughter shaking through his body. “I’ll give you more if you want them.”
A bolt of lightning split open the sky. “I think Mother Nature said no to that one,” you said, peering out of the windshield at the sky above. “Whatever.” JJ leaned his chair back and put his hands behind his head. “Where to next?” “I can drop you off wherever before I head off.” You weren’t one hundred percent sure if JJ was staying with his dad or not and you didn’t want to be pushy. “You’re not going to tell me that you turn in at 12? The night is still young!” “If I’m not home, my dad will have my head on a platter,” you said, starting the car and beginning to pull out. “Live a little, remember?” “Yeah, well, if I live too much it’s my little brother who pays for it, remember?” “Right.” “So, where to?” “I’ve been staying with John B.” “Alrighty then. To John B’s.” When you pulled up to John B’s house, you weren’t surprised to see that the van was still gone. “Kiara, Pope, and John B must be having the time of their lives,” you said with a laugh. “I hope you don’t feel too excluded.” JJ laughed. “None of them are having as much fun as me,” JJ said. You rolled your eyes. The rain had begun to dwindle as you parked, so the two of you ran inside as quickly as you could. For a moment, you just looked around. This house was like nowhere you had ever been before. For the first time in a long time, the word home popped into your head. But, then again, you weren’t sure if it was the house or JJ’s arm that was hooked around your waist. “I’ve never been to a house on the cut,” you mused, running a hand over one of the cabinets, looking at all the wall hangings. “Well, it’s not much,” JJ said, grabbing a bruised apple off a shelf. He took a bite.    “It’s….” You looked around again and finally shook your head. “Anyway, I should get going.”
As you turned toward the door, JJ gently grabbed onto your wrists. “Ellie-” “JJ.” “I want you to stay.” “I can’t. My dad-” “Just for once don’t think about you dad!” JJ walked past you, running his hands through his hair. “There’s so much more out there than him. You don’t have to be afraid of him.” “I’m not...I’m not afraid of my dad. I’m afraid for my brother. If I’m not there to take it, he deals it out to Kid. I can’t let that happen.” “So, you just act as your dad’s personal punching bag?” “Don’t you?” It was clear that you were both at an impasse. You weren’t sure if you had gone to far, so you carried on in hopes that there was a chance he would understand. “I know that you’ve only ever had to take care of yourself when it comes to your dad, so I don’t blame you for not understanding, but it’s...it’s different when there is someone else that depends on you. I mean, who am I to enjoy things like watching the stars or parties or hickeys when it’s my brother who has to pay for it?” JJ tightened his jaw, but nodded slowly. You stepped forward, taking his hands in yours. “Please, JJ, just-” You closed your eyes and sucked in a deep breath. “Just give me some more time to figure everything out, alright? I want nothing more than to be able to stay with you tonight and just forget everything else, but I can’t. I just can’t.” You begged him with your eyes to understand. You didn’t want to finish this night the same way you had the last time you talked. Finally, JJ nodded, squeezing your hands. “I got you,” he said. “Thank you.” You started to take off the sweater he loaned to you but he shook his head. “It’s cold out there,” he said. “And you don’t know when it’ll rain.” You nodded, leaning up to give him a kiss on his cheek. Before you got back down from your toes, JJ grabbed your face for one last kiss. It may have been one last attempt to get you to stay, but you couldn’t. This was one whirlpool you couldn’t risk jumping into. You stepped back and left the room before he could say or do anything else. When you made it back to your car, you felt like crying. Leaving JJ alone in that house felt like leaving a puppy on the side of the road. It felt wrong and it made you sick, but you couldn’t leave Kid to the wrath of your father, so before the tears had the chance to fall, you reversed and started the journey back home.

Dark Side Of The Rising Sun Part 1
Yo what’s up!
Tumblr media
After the success of my previous post, I’ve decided to bring a follow up where I talk about the many dysfunctions and issues facing Japan that I’ve learned in my research. Detective Conan often shows the criminal justice system of Japan in a positive light while in reality it has many issues due to the culture.
Now let me make this clear: Japan has many great things about itself that should never be ignored. However, these are real flaws that have or need to be addressed with many Japanese also recognizing them as problems.
Now I had to split this into parts as this is rather ungainly to put it all at once. If you have any questions please ask and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Tumblr media
 Suicide
Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world with about 15.2 deaths per 100,000 people.
This is due to many factors such as Suicide not being considered a sin as well as historical connotations of it being a honorable way to go.
It is also considered a act of revenge, apology, and protest.
It is mostly caused today by factors such as unemployment, alienation and intense social pressure.
Japanese society is overall tolerant of Suicide but this is changing in recent times.
Another factor is the need for acceptance over individuality.
People with mental illness are often discriminated against, stopping potential help.
Internet Suicide Clubs where anonymous people make/plan suicide pacts and commit group suicide are a major issue.
If you kill yourself via Shinkansen, your family will be fined heavily. It is also the cause of half of the train delays and referred to as a human incident.
Tall buildings have mandatory suicide fences to prevent people from jumping off. When they succeed, they take off their shoes before hand.
It is common for suicidal people to take insurance policies and wait a year or two to go through with it so their families would be okay.
Ikka Shinju or family suicides are when the entire family kills themselves together due to Asian views of the family. When the parents kill their children before themselves, this is called Muri-Shinju or murder suicides.
Oyaku Shinju or parent-child suicide are where a single parent kill their children along with themselves.
Drownings, overdoses, hangings, and jumping off places are the most common form of suicide.
Tumblr media
Judiciary
Traditionally, the judge is hated more then the lawyer is in the west as the Judge is often viewed as a symbol of the Japanese nobility judging the common man.
If you are sent to trial, you are certain to be convicted regardless of innocence due to the countries 99% conviction rate. (Really makes Eri’s work more awesome and badass doesn’t it?)
The Japanese supreme court is one of the most conservative in the world, rarely ruling against issues that are blatantly unconstitutional and anti human rights. As a result, one of the more positive proposals for amendments of the Constitution is the creation of a separate Constitutional Court.
If you are sent to death row, you will never be told in advance when you are going to die.
Culturally, once arrested the person is automatically considered guilty.
Police are often reluctant to overturn convictions as they insist that only guilty are arrested and convicted.
The law when a child is considered criminally responsible is 14.
Judges are often pressured into making convictions as their careers are negatively affected by a not guilty verdict.
Prosecutors are given the choice not to pursue a case regardless of sufficient evidence.
Prisoners in Japan, while somewhat treated better then much of the world due to it’s focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment, have to follow strict military style regulations from minor things such as being forced to fold the bed, or to wash your face to more draconian measures such being beaten if you don’t march or sit the wrong way.
In turn, many have inadequate access to medical care as they don’t have many options for their healthcare.
It can take months or years before you are tried, meaning that a right to a speedy trial is completely nonexistent.
“Periods of reflection” where inmates are forced to be handcuffed, gagged and placed in solitary, are often not recorded by the warden.
Foreigners are forced to speak and write in Japanese.
Tumblr media
Drug Use
It is considered vastly socially unacceptable to do narcotics in Japan.
Most drug addicts are even considered to be not human.
If a celebrity is caught doing drugs, his career is automatically fucked and he is blacklisted from the industry, as well as erased from current projects.
The most commonly sold drug is methamphetamine. This started after World War II due to Meth being legal for soldiers to consume in order to stay up late on petrol as well as from occupying Americans. After the was, it became a huge epidemic for 12 years.
Marijuana use has risen among youth. Despite it having little danger as well as medicinal uses, it is widely considered evil, with the law having no tolerance.
Overall, Japan has little drug use compared to the rest of the world due to the cultural taboo and strict laws. However, there are signs that it is being vastly under counted,
Most illicit drugs are imported from Taiwan and South Korea due to it being near impossible to grow it natively but it is becoming increasingly hard to do so.
Drugs overdoses are criminally under diagnosed.
Epidemics often occur due to low periods of economic growth and recessions. (Examples include the postwar period, the 70′s, and the Lost Decade after the Bubble Economy burst in 1989)
It is common for your family or doctor to call the police once you admit there is a problem. Then you are forced to take a urine sample and if it tests positive you are immediately arrested.
A lot of doctors open pharmacies to add to their income. As a result, many oversubscribe prescription drugs.
Hypocritically, Alcoholism is completely tolerated and not treated as a addiction due to alcohol being considering purifying in Shinto, a cure, and Japan having a intense drinking culture.
Tumblr media
Child Abuse
For the most part, physical child abuse is considered a private issue and often ignored. While things are slowly getting better, Japan still has a long way to go. (Imagine if Kogoro did what he did to Conan in the west. Child services would be on him like a fly swatter.)
Child services often return the children to their parents even if they say their abusing them as the counseling centers need the parents to admit to their abuse.
It is a complete myth that Japan’s age of consent is 13. That is only the lowest one could set it. Most prefectures are set at 16 or higher. In turn, child molestation of those under 12 is heavily punished. However while vaginal rape of children is illegal, basically just about everything else as long as it’s statutory is basically alright.
Enjo Kosai or compensated dating is the practice of Teenage Girls to go on dates with older men in exchange for money and gifts. While not necessarily always leading to prostitution is treated as such and the girls are often blamed if they are hurt in the process.
Child sex trafficking of migrants is a serious issue and they are often treated as criminals and sent home without counseling.
Adoption of children is rare and frowned upon so many of them have to gro up in centers.
Children of unmarried couples are discriminated against due to the violation of the traditional Ie system and do not have the same protections or privileges of married couples because of its Koseki system.
Men are not obligated to pay child support and it’s near impossible to get them to legally as they can simply hide their finances by not telling them. Plus only one person can be named on the custody sheet.
Child Pornography was effectively decriminalized until 2014. No seriously.
Sexual Harassment/Assault
Domestic violence victims are disabused from coming forward due to the idea of bringing shame to their family.
Stalking cases are rarely taken seriously by the police
OH THERE”S WAY MORE BUT THIS LIST IS DARK ENOUGH SO LET”S SAVE THIS FOR A LATER DATE.
Working Conditions
Idols are heavily exploited and forced to follow strict rules such as having no social life, banned from having a boyfriend, etc. This is because they are supposed to sell a image of innocence and be there exclusively for their fans.
Anime creators are often forced to work long hours with little pay. This has resulted in a slump in the industry with very few new hires so they are forced to rely on the older animators whose health may fail sooner rather then later.
Funds are rarely given to films with artistic intent or that are political in nature, resulting the film industry suffering compared to the more internationally regarded South Korea.
Tumblr media
Police Corruption
Until recently, Japanese police would work with organized crime to lower crime. The only reason they stopped was not out of concern for the everyday citizen but because they were embarrassed by the Yakuza when they began to show up more publically.
The media is often laughably compliant to the police, with they rarely offering a critical lens.
Police have undue influence on the Pachiko industry, with many retired officers being hired as muscle and for advice.
It is quite common for officers to embezzle from their slush funds.
In a effort to cover up crime, police often refuse to investigate mysterious or suspicious deaths, preferring to label them as accidents or suicide.
Police are often anti migrant and sexist to a fault.
It is neigh impossible to get a wiretap going due to rigid privacy laws.
Even the police can’t fire weapons as you need approval to even loose your gun so many officers have never fired a bullet.
Government Incompetence/Corruption
Voter Apathy is super high, with many elections having hilariously low turnout.
Many politicians have Yakuza connections, with the gang members serving as bodyguards and canvassing for votes.
Votes in the countryside are worth two compared to urban ones.
A lot of politicians are completely out of touch and constantly have to resign for gaffes (racism, sexism, historical revisionism, etc.)
Political acts are based on group consensus so it can take a long time to get meaningful reform done.
Criticism and debate is ironically frowned upon, with open criticism within a party being effectively banned.
Cronyism is common. While for the most part Japanese politics is based on expertise, many politicians are awarded ministries based on their support for the leader.
The NHK (Japanese version of the BBC) is largely neutral and free but the current Japanese government can dictate what it is to focus on temporarily.
Press Clubs are often given exclusive access to interviews and information from the government, so they get biased preferential treatment.
Okay I guess the point of this list is to bring attention to these issues and expand the opportunities of where to go when it comes to dark DC fanfiction. Don’t worry, here’s a cute Conan to make you smile!

Name: Corethra (or Corey for short)
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Occupation: Hand Packer at an ice cream factory. I work 12 hours (5:30pm to 6am) on a rotating schedule.
Birthplace: Memphis, TN, USA. I was raised in the neighborhood called Frayser which is the most impoverished area in Memphis and has a high crime rate as expected.
Zodiac Sign: Pisces (born March 2) My full birth chart can be found here
Enneagram: 5w6
Chinese Zodiac: Year Of The Pig
MBTI Type: INFJ
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Love Language: Acts Of Service
Race/Ethnicity: African-American
Height: 4'11 (Call me short and I’ll kick your butt!)
Body Type/Shape: Average but well developed figure at best. I weigh about 158 lbs and am pretty insecure about my body. I also have really bad scars on my left arm from being bitten by a dog.
Hair Color/Style: Black and naturally curly but I keep it flat-ironed so it’s straight. It’s long and goes down to just below my shoulder blades. There are times when I will have braids put in of various lengths.
Glasses or No?: Yes I wear glasses
Eye Color: Brown
Dress Style: I usually dress up in a casual way, just throwing on whatever looks good at the time but I will sometimes put in the effort when the time calls for it or when I’m in a good mood. I have an affinity for the punk, emo, and goth styles and I rarely wear feminine clothes but I will wear something risky every once in a while.
Hobbies/Interests: Video games, reading, writing, anime, internet surfing, listening to music, politics (sometimes), watching movies/TV shows, basically being an overall nerd. I’m usually either on my laptop or one of my many video game consoles if I’m not on my phone or reading one of my books.
Dislikes: Ignorance, stupidity, restriction, manipulation/gas-lighting, bullying, humanity, not being understood, corruption/injustice, close-mindedness
Personality: At first glance, I seem quiet and keep to myself, only speaking when I need to or when I’m spoken to. I’m an anti-social introvert to the fullest and don’t care much for small talk or going out. I prefer to have deeper conversations. When I get comfortable enough in whatever environment I’m in, I start to open up bit by bit. I’m a tomboy and pretty rough-minded as well as stubborn. I’m very sassy, have a smart, sarcastic, and witty mouth if not humorous and outrageous at times, can be borderline rude and mean, and I’m more sensitive than I care to be. I can literally cry at someone’s suffering especially if it’s someone I’m close to or even a total stranger. I’m very empathetic and my heart is bigger than what most people would expect. Most people describe me as quiet, intelligent, creative, dorky, a smartass, and really sweet. I love a good laugh and have an open sense of humor to boot.
Many of my friends say that I’m very sweet and kind which I usually am if I’m in a good mood as well as affectionate as hell. Hugs and pet names galore with me! However only my friends and family see that side of me. My language is often unfiltered, harsh, foul, and blunt which shocks people because they think I’m a pure angel. I say what I want when I want and no one tells me otherwise. If they do, they can expect a mouthful from me. I’m an escapist and very imaginative, can be a bit scatterbrained at times, and I’m methodical and detailed to the point of perfectionism. I’m usually a walking contradiction in terms of personality in so many ways to the point where the real me is almost impossible to decipher. To make matters more complicated, I’m not very good at expressing myself verbally and prefer to let my actions do the talking. I also express myself better through written form.
I have many pet peeves and I get annoyed easily in general. I’m also slowly embracing misanthropy and nihilism but I can be pretty idealistic so it balances out. I’m practically zero tolerance when it comes to bullshit. I hate confrontation and conflict but I’m starting to work on it so I can be less passive-aggressive and more assertive. I also wish to stand up for myself more often than I should so people won’t think that I’m weak and an easy target. I’m pretty cynical which is to be expected and usually expect the worst from people. When someone angers me, I will either just withdraw altogether and completely cut them off (slam the door basically) or get in their face and go off before doing the former. I’m the “hold my anger in and release it all at once” type but I hope to change that one day and stop letting things fester before they get out of hand. I can be quite petty and even cold as well and if someone wrongs me, they will have to make the first move to mend fences. I refuse to apologize if I’m not in the wrong and I will not accept gaslighting/guilt tripping. I also refuse to change for others and will admit to having quite a lot of pride but that’s mostly due to me not wanting to be hurt and manipulated, mistreated, or used.
I have issues with trust and a wild imagination to boot. I usually trust my instincts and can see right through bullshit. I don’t like taking risks and I have to know all the details when I do something so I don’t mess up and look like an idiot. I am indeed a perfectionist and introverted to a fault which often prevents me from trying new things and going outside my comfort zone. I haven’t been in a relationship yet and am still a virgin due to my issues with trust and not wanting to be hurt or humiliated as well as being quite picky/perfectionistic with the people I allow in my life. I have high standards for both people and myself although I’m pretty laid-back and my dislike of conflict allows me to also take a lot of shit from people too before I eventually say “fuck it” and slam the door or go off on them. I don’t think very highly of myself and can sometimes fall into a period of self-hatred and self-pity.
Many people praise me for my intelligence which is fitting since I’m an intellectual. My ideals and beliefs are rather odd to say the least (I’m a classical liberal/independent and despise most ideologies/ideas. This includes religion, feminism, social justice, traditionalism, statism, big government, nationalism, socialism/communism, etc.) and I feel misunderstood because of it (mostly because of the black community ostracizing me). I am indeed a rebel, open-minded, and a free thinker. No one tells me how to think or feel or else they face my wrath. I highly value power over myself and I think it’s the most important thing that a person needs in order to survive. I am definitely an outcast at heart and I often distance myself from others and don’t like talking about my feelings or beliefs because I think most people lack the ability/capacity to understand me. Before I give my opinion on something, I like to do as much research as possible as well as look at things from all perspectives before coming to my own conclusion. I don’t mind discussing things but I prefer logic over emotion when doing so which makes it damn near impossible these days for me to have an real conversation without insults and threats being thrown (usually towards me). Chances are I’m gonna find something wrong with damn near anything someone believes in or says and I’m not afraid to call it out when I see it. Once I do open up and express how I feel, the gates of passion will open up and never close. I also have high morals and values and stick to my guns no matter what which can make me pretty stubborn at times.
I’m currently battling depression and often experience many symptoms of it including suicidal thoughts and depression spells. I also suffer from iron-deficiency anemia as well as irregular, prolonged periods. These things are pretty annoying for me to deal with whenever they flare up.
Overall, I’m pretty crazy and a handful to deal with. Good luck matching me up with someone :P

𝐼 𝓈𝒽𝒾𝓅 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽…
Tumblr media
Ace! I feel that you and ace would be such a great couple! He is open minded and kind to others whereas you are the same way! You are passionate like he is, caring like he is, loyal to the bone like he is! He would see you and see your personality and just instantly fall in love you and your personality! Like, I can’t even imagine how much he will want you on his crew, so they he can keep on you and protect you at all times-- though he will soon figure out that you don’t need help, you can take care yourself--which he will find extremely attractive, no doubt about that!
He will love that fact that you are independent, because he really values individualism and independency, he sees it as a great traits to have. But he will also love the fact that you are sensitive, and can sometimes get into your own  head. He understands that, knows it all too well, so he will try with all his might to try and make sure that you are happy and always smiling! But he will love how fierce you can be to other people, never bowing down to their expectations!
All in all, I feel like Ace would be a great man for you in the one piece universe! He would be attentive to you, would love your attitude and personality, and would absolutely adore how loyal and strong you are! make sure to love him thoroughly!
Tumblr media
Ah, Sai! He is much like Ace, just a little less emotional, which is fine! I feel like you and Sai would make a couple for a couple reasons! He would love how mature you are, and how logical you can be, and-- like ace-- he loves the fact that you are extremely loyal to your friends! That is a true factor in the way he will see you, and it is for the better! He will se how strong you are, emotionally and will be envious and at the same time fascinated! I Feel like Sai will look at you with wide eyes, his breath caught in his throat, his heart beating wildly in his ribcage because he will love you that much! All the things you are interested he will want to hear with enthusiasm, everything you love he will want to learn and hear from you, to get to know you better!
Another thing is that if you were to go to him with your insecurities and how you are battling depression, he will try to understand, and once he does he will try to everything and anything to make sure you feel better! You need a massage? He’s on it! You need cuddles? oh yeah he will give you some! You need chocolate or sweets or anything of the like? He’ll run to the store, and be back 5 minutes tops!
All in all, I feel like the cool, mature Sai, with a heart of pure gold will be such a good match for you! He will make sure that you uncomfortable with him, he will never want to make you unhappy, and he will definitely do anything i his power to make sure that you will keep on loving him as much as you can!
Tumblr media
Rei! Now, with Rei, I wanted to go a more cute route. I feel that Rei would be equal parts and scared and in love with you! He sees how strong you are against people that oppose, he sees how strong you are for your friends, and how you have such a different personality to everybody else around him, and he will immediately fall in with you. Like instantly! To him, you’d be like a beautiful butterfly blooming right in front of him, and he will want to have you all tot himself! Of course, he won’t force you, but he will definitely watch you at a distance longingly!
He is very much an introvert and your calm but strong aura would definitely help with his anxiety! I just see him melting next you, into your lap or shoulder whenever you are around him because he is so comfortable around you. He doesn’t do this with just anybody so it would be a real honor! And when it it comes to your insecurities, he would want to make sure that you know he loves you the way are, and if you were to want to change something about yourself, then he will support you all the way, as long as you are happy! He will just love that you are such a freethinker and so openminded about things, so unlike him!
All in all, I feel like Rei would love you and (somewhat) idolize because you have all these traits that he would love to have. This perfectionist will understand how it feels to be such a perfectionist and will want to help you with that too! He will love to the moon and back(stroke)!

Lockdown Diary Part 1
A personal account during the lockdown in the UK due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
23/03/2020 8:30pm Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, gives a live address to the nation to, effectively, put the country on lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus strain, Covid-19.
Many of us have been self-isolating for days but this latest development within the UK in reaction to the pandemic feels very serious and very scary. I decided to keep a simple diary and where better but online.
Day 1: Last night Boris called it, today we’re doing it. I had started working from home (wfh) yesterday as had most people at my work (RCI)..last week I had been preparing laptops as fast as poss for everyone. Even just today, the idea of going into work seems alien and dangerous. Now lockdown (ld) means that it would soon be illegal to do so unless utterly necessary.
Online, FaceBook (fb) especially, is awash with reaction…a lot of calling out people who are out and about in greater numbers than 2, which is against ld rules.
Day 2: Just trying to let work occupy my thoughts and time which is easy enough ‘cos everyone I support (IT engineer) is new to wfh and is having teething problems with all the new laptops. Meanwhile, I keep abreast of comings and goings online…actually socially interacting more than I might otherwise, weirdly
Day 3: Highlight of the day is an online quiz organised by a chap called Jay Flynn on fb…a bunch of us took it as individuals while chatting on Messenger while Jay streamed quiz over fb live and YouTube. It was a good crack and I had two cans of Coors Light which got me pissed!
Day 4: Work is still mad - so many people with IT issues wfh…it’s challenging trying resolve all these probelms remotely but I am rising to it. I actually enjoy it. It satisfies my want for problem-solving.
The ld is in full swing but it’s very early days. The news is dominated, obviously, by Covid-19 and the ever changing stats of infections and deaths. Today, for example, the USA took over, from China, as the country with the most infections. I know there will be an end to all this and I am determined to be there, going out, getting pissed down the pub, gigging, shaking hands with my mates, hugging anyone and everyone who’ll let me - it’ll be a proper party. But I am filled with a dread that it’s going to be a fucking long time coming.
This evening was spent virtually with Foggy, Ham and Andy P…doing a quiz - a rehearsal for Foggy in the hope of doing one to a wider audience next week. It was good fun and great to have a few beers chatting with everyone, Later I video called Fog and we drank ‘til gone midnight, putting the world to rights. I was well pissed.
Day 5: First non-work day of the ld. Housework, daily walk, out for supplies (drop a script order off…queuing outside boots for 15 minues!, bread, baccy and booze). This evening, I’m listening to the next album in NME list of 1985 albums I’m working through - Grace Jones Slave to the Rhythm…fucking pain in the arse ‘cos it’s not on Spotify so I am searching for each song, in order, on YouTube. Plus eating and drinking, of course. Quick video chat with karen and Grace, Dan in the background. I wanted a tin of kidney beans for chilli but Karen hasn’t got one ffs. Burger it is. They are all playing scrabble - I’d love to join in…
Day 6: A quiet day…housework, cooking, daily walk. Highlight was a half hour chinwag with dad who, as I would expect, despite his 84 years, is coping and doing just fine. Most other people with a dad that age would have, on top of their own concerns, something more to worry about during this crisis….for me, it feels like I’ve got someone to turn to, should I need to.
Day 7: Work is starting to feel more routine but it’s a long way off being in the office, which is never routine anyway. That may seem surprising since I do IT support but it’s a varied role, especially at the modern dinosaur of an organisation that is RCI. I try to be as disciplined as possible but I miss not dressing for work, not driving to work, not needing to actually prepare lunch (until lunchtime). I don’t actually need to shower every morning. I don’t think I have to ordinarily but do because I’m mixing with others in the office. I certainly don;t need to now. I only mix with me, so showering becomes a chore but I’m doing it every other morning in the name of the aforementioned discipline. I am worried how long RCI can keep going before laying staff off. I dread being out of work full stop, let alone during this ld, or even thereafter. I think the economies of the world will need time to recover so finding work will be tough à la 2008. I think, if lay-offs were to occur, I’d be in real danger. Last in first out and all that. But, I’ll cross that bridge if and when I come to it.
Day 8: At work there was a large online meeting whereby the MD told us that RCI are going to furlough some staff. The UK, and Ireland staff will be consulted this coming Thursday and Friday (it’s Tuesday today). I shall be reading up on what the furlough arrangements are in the UK due to Covid-19. I know the government have set aside some money, I need to know what I might get paid and how to claim it. In the past, when I’ve been out of work, I’ve been entitled to jack shit other than JSA, This time around, should I be laid off as I expect, I might not have to eat into my savings, fingers crossed. Meanwhile, I have decided to knock up another blog with a photo of myself each day of the ld (from now on) - it’s a sister to this diary.
Day 9: Actually typing this on day 10. Yesterday was a strange day as I contemplate being furloughed (hope for the best, expect the worst)…I’d be paid 80% of my wage according to what the government have said to assist in the Covid-19 crisis…so, were that to be true, I’d be OK money-wise, although still earning way less than I want to prepared for retirement (I am currently still waiting for feedback on a pay increase request I put in at work last year!) I’m more worried about how I would fill my day if I wasn’t working. So, that being said, I flopped and moped about all yesterday evening after my daily walk and, without achieving much at all, didn’t find time to write this entry on the right day…so maybe I can fill my days without much effort!
Day 10: I was furloughed today, starting 5pm tomorrow (Friday 3rd April) and it’s fucked me off. I know it’s not personal but, actually, do I? They’re cutting back the Kettering Desktop team by one, redacted It seems obvious to do this by the ‘last in, first out’ maxim but what about money? others are on more than me (redacted). What about offering it voluntarily - others might go for 80% pay for fuck all - others have family at home to occupy the day  (redacted) . A little bit of me thinks it might be preferable furlough me  (redacted) …others seems to be a favourite and that annoys me. It annoys me because I think I shoot myself in the foot too often. I’m too vocal about some of the (redacted) decisions and practices at work, plus other reasons that I know but can’t be bothered to type. But, my point, is I don’t play the politically correct, corporate game and therefore forget to look out for my own best interests. FUCK.
So, as of tomorrrow evening, I’ve no work to do. The challenge will be to find a way to occupy my day. I’ve already registered to volunteer for the NHS during the ld…let’s see what becomes of that. And I’ve signed up for web development course. I’m going to get fucking pissed this w/e, starting early tomorrow evening.
Day 11: It’s day 12 as I am writing this entry…that might tell any reader, and remind me, that I did as I promised and got pretty drunk. I spent the day geting my work affairs in order i.e. clearing down support tickets assigned to me. I did a good job, nothing left to handover to the remaining team (Jim, Cristina and Mark) and onky one ticket put into the assigned pool. Some nice converstaions were had with associates, many of whom are, too, being furloughed. Nice words were said and Jim and Mark both were supportive in conversations and messages - they both know I don’t wnat this and, I think, they are both relieved it’s not happening to them. 5 pm arrives and I shutdown my work laptop for the last time for at least 12 weeks. After my daily walk, I video chat with Karen, crack open a beer, make Chinese chicken curry (fucking loads, fucking tasty), finish watching The National Theatre stream of One Man, Two Guvnors (really good, see twoinchreview) and the caught up with, and talked bollocks with Andy, Marc and Ham - we tried getting Rog in on it, no dice. I then watched The Heat (I fucking love that film), ate some more, smoked several single-skinners, drank, in total, three cans, seven bottles. I went to bed shortly after 4am. I felt resigned to my furlough and pleasantly wasted.
Day 12: A subdued day…didn’t wake until gone 1:30pm. Jaded but not really suffering. Mooched about, social media, listening to music, watching telly, farting about on the iPad. My daily walk, over the last fews days, has taken a twist…I am trying to run parts of it. Mainly short distances, 80-100m (I estimate) three, maybe four times. It’s fucking knackering me out. I used to run everywhere when I was a teen. Attempting to run now just makes me feel fucking old. Well, I am, so that’s about right.
Day 13: Another day like yesterday except I got up at 10:30 and didn’t feel jaded. The subdued feeling comes from the realsiation that the ld isn’t being treated as seriously as it should be across the board. The news and even posts by locals on FB (Oundle chatter group) suggest groups still meeting up. The weather this w/e has been a factor - 17°c today. I think a total ld will be enforced soon and that would fuck me off. My daily walk is pretty essential for me nowadays not least for the ‘good for your soul’ benefits that dad has always mentioned. Even today’s walk saw a car parked at the gates to the field on the way to Ashton and people on a blanket soaking up the sun, dogs off their leads and people (looked like a family) playing footy on South Road field. Individually they are not presenting any danger, what with the fact they are either living together or far away from others. But they are flaunting the rules and the more that happens the less likely they’ll carry on getting away with it, which will mean total ld for all! I finished the 50 1985 albums today. It mostly confirms to me that I only listened to two albums released that year (Kate Bush, The Waterboys) any other vinyl I spun would have already been in my collection pre-85.
The sausage casserole I made for tea was fucking lush - 4 birdeye chillies. I saw and spoke with Dan and Grace this morning, they were just coming back from a walk. I am pleased to fuck they are together and sorted out the issues they had earlier this year.
Day 14: My first day proper of furlough. Finished my two inch review of the NME 50 albums. Long chat with Rita, quick one with dad. Messaged Sam about Romiley’s present - she’s 10 on the 9th April (Thursday) - ordered some Lego thing from Amazon. Turned the car engine over (reminded myself the driver-side wing mirror is fucked) and moved it to another spot in the Co-op car park - bumped into Matt T. He’s struggling - no work coming in and he can’t claim any of the money on offer ‘cos he’s not being totally honest about his circumstances - made me realise I’m not that bad off…..but I feel depressed about it all, especially with the news that Boris has gone into intensive care.
Day 15: I began a diploma (?) course on web design with Shaw Academy (it was free). They have actual classes (which are recorded) which you schedule yourself. The first one was, I have to say, really interesting - I look forward to continuing. On my walk today, I saw a car parked at the gate to the field at the bottom of Riverside Close; it was branded with Cunninghams Estate Agent with a 01536 number. I am pretty sure I saw the driver walking her dog (unleashed) on the field. I took a photo and rang the number. Yes, I ratted the culprit out…fucking annoys me that I had to. Better than reporting to the police, all round. Hopefully her work will put a stop to her doing it and, the more people that adhere to the rules without the police getting wind of infractions, the more likely we’ll be able to continue to exercise away from home.
Day16: More online learning including checking out other sites (pluralsight) for more learning opportunities. Coded my first web page, basic but mine, in HTML and CSS. A few beers & smokes and watching White Boy Rick in the evening, interspersed with the usual social media / messaging shit, incuding this entry, of course!
Day 17: Typing this on Day 18. After a few beers last night while chatting with Fog (twice - the first chat ended with him ‘having’ to go to bed. Later, I noticed he was commenting on FB, so I video called him…round two of chatting!). I got quite fucking pissed. Bed around 4am.
Day18: Up at 1pm. Long walk today, 7 km. Anything over 40 minutes, I’ve realised, results in a hypo.
Day19: Well, having gone to bed at gone 5am I got up at nearly 1pm feeling far better than I should have. Breakfast followed by a walk, spoke with Karen (mowing her front lawn) and Dan. He and Grace have split up which is sad news but he seems OK. Went shopping (milk and sweets) and ended up with a shit load of booze, the post of which on FB was quite amusing. Homemade burgers for tea (they’re in the fridge as I type) - gonna try and make Five Guys…
Day20: The Five Guys burger attempt didn’t go as well as I wanted. I think less than 5% fat mince just doesn’t bind that well. However, I managed to get something resembling a burger into the bun and, with cheese, hot sauce and jalapeños, it was tasty enough. More of the same when I finish typing this entry. Strange Easter Day today, as I knew it would be. The best thing I saw today was a video Tom posted on FB of him and Molly doing a mashup of Starsailor and George Michael - Tom on guitar singing the former, Molly singing the latter. It was fucking fantatstic.
Day 21: Easter Monday. Surreal…it’s feeling very surreal now, this lockdown.
Two things that bother me right now:
i) The political point scoring on FB. I get it, I really do…people like to bring up ‘obvious’ failings in the party’s mistakes. For example, Marc posting comparisons between UK and Germany’s figures of cases and deaths due to Covid-19. I doesn’t make impressive reading for the government and it should be held accountable. But not fucking now!
ii) Will they introduce rotational furloughing at RCI? It’s only been a week, 11 to go. And, it bothers me that I was furloughed rather than Mark. Pathetic of me, I know! But, should it last the 12 week stretch, I want to go back to work and let someone else have the chance to have fuck all to do all day! That being said, I’m still learning web design through Shaw Academy. Even today, bank holiday, I revised Lesson 2.
Day22: Nice catchup with Dad today - he and Rita seem to be more than OK with lockdown. I actually cannot wait until we can meet up at The Farmers again!
Day 23: While I had a Corvee engineer come to the house today to do a gas safety check (I waited upstairs while he was here, self-isolation and all that), and had the fourth online web design lesson, had a trip to Boots to pick up insulin, got milk from Tesco’s, saw American Rachel and had a chat (while we both queued to get into Tesco’s) and had a very nice walk along a different route from the norm, in the pleasant sunshine and watched Contagion on Netflix - all today - I AM STILL BORED AS FUCK!
Day 24: I had plans for today - revise the last two lessons of Shaw Academy’s web design course, investigate a ethical hacking course, do some washing, clean upstairs (or at least the bathroom) plus all the usual stuff. Then, as a reward, have some beers. Well, guess what. I am not having beers this evening. I managed the laundry. Plus I manged to subtitle my YouTube perfect snabby video (something I have been meaning to do for a while, but, come on!) It took me fucking ages. But it is funny! So, a fucking far from fruitful day. Plus the government announced at least 3 more weeks of lockdown. There’ll be loads more, I reckon. Tomorrow…I promise I’ll be better tomorrow…
Day 25: I did do better! Firstly the Corveee man fucked the boiler which I only noticed late yesterday but still managed to get sorted today. I did some excellent revision and learning of HTML (tags) and CSS. I cleaned the bathroom and hall. And I discovered TikTok (fucking excellent dancing and funny vids) plus discovered a new FaceBook word game (Sam sent me an invite) called WordBlitz and I am pretty good. Having beers now (nearly 11pm).
Day 26: Today I found myself calling 111. I had a pain in my side last night, I thought it might be constipation! That not being the case (!), today I went to 111.nhs.uk and, following their questions, it recommended I seek out a GP straightaway. Once I let the website know that is not possible, it directed me to visit walk in centres. I spoke with Karen thereafter - for advice about whether it’s a good idea to enter such an establishment - I really don’t want to increase me chances of catching the Covid-19 virus. Karen recommended ringing 111 since the website does not take into account my diabetes (so bloody sensible a suggestion!)
After ringing and answering many questions, the lady said she’d get an OOHS GP to call. The doctor called soon after and it seems most likely I have a grumbling appendix (chronic appendicitis) and to ring again (well, 999) if the pain becomes unbearable.
I now have a bag at the ready for hospital which I really hope I don’t have to use. Today, I  have, therefore, done fuck all - not even a walk - but I am having a beer now (midnight) and shall attempt to sleep as well as possible and hope this pain subsides naturally…
It occurs to me that I turn to Karen when things become flumoxing - my excuse, this time, is she works at the surgery but that was mere convenience.
Day 27: My ‘appendicitis pain was the same when I woke up (10:20) but no worse. I managed to change bed clothes and clean my bedroom but didn’t risk a walk (in case something drastic happens when I’m in a fucking field).
People’s responses and questions online have been heartening (Rachel Harris, Susie Grange, Bethan, Jo, Tracey Weber, Debbie De Prisco and, not least Dan). As the day progresses, I feel better but not right. I spoke with Dad about it and, as I told him, I shall ring Oundle GP tomorrow. Meanwhile, I did Sam Clew’s FB Live quiz, which was good, and am now having a beer or two.
Day 28: The pain in my side has definitley diminished. I called the Oundle surgery today to talk about what treatment I should have for ‘grumbling appendicitis’. The reseptionist organised a call back from a GP - Dr. Cash. Basically, he said he didn’t believe the condition existed, that acute appendicitis doesn’t happen after the age of 35, and ‘his gut felling’ is it will all just clear up.
I shall seek a more sensible diagnosis after lockdown and hope it doesn’t flare up again before then.
Day 29: I sent an email to the team at work today (Jim, Mark, Cristina and Sueanne). I hadn’t heard from them and I wanted to check in and, also, make a point that I will be posing the ‘rotational furlough’ question to HR at some point. It was as I wrote the email that I realised it’s only been two weeks and two days of furlough, and that includes Easter! Seems so much fucking longer. Anyway, everyone replied and it was good to hear from them….Mark came off his bike and broke ribs and collarbone! Lesson 5 of the Web Design course with Shaw Academy. It’s becoming apparent that, if you don’t pay for the course ‘toolkit’ it’s all rather patchy! The instructor dives into lines of code (HTML, CSS and Java) with no explanation….I feel like I did on the ifrst lesson of further maths ate Stamford School! I shall soldier on and beef up the missing parts with W3Schools (a great website and learning aid for coding). Two quick points. I am no longer running any part of my daily walk; hurts too much. I am addicted to Wordblitz and TikTok. Day30: I am writing this on day 31, I just forgot yesterday! It was a non eventful day. I did watch Midnight Run (again!) and had a couple of midweek beers though.

spy!bts // kim namjoon
♥ angst and fluff (warning: mentions of violence and minor gore)
♥ 3.3k words
♥ WARNING: mentions of violence and blood and slight gore if you’re not into that
Tumblr media
kim namjoon is known for his ‘sexy’ brain - the way he can quickly strategize a getaway in less than a minute or how he’s always a part of creating another new invention with yoongi and jungkook
namjoon helps with providing the information on what they lack on while yoongi works on the functionality of the weapon and jungkook does the overall design
but thats not all when it comes to him
sure he’s a little clumsy at times, breaking his cartridge somehow and having to make do with a knife and still managing to pull through
but he’s pretty agile when he puts his mind to it
he would be able to sneak past guards swiftly, dislocating their necks with quick movements and squeeze through vents that were wayy too narrow and small for his tall and wide stature
but even with his outstanding abilities, he doesnt let it get to his head, ensuring that his teammates are way more important and having to put them first before himself
he was truly that kind of leader anyone would look up to and its amazing how it’s a natural part of his personality
he is also the reason why jungkook joined forces because he thought namjoon looked super cool when he tackled the punching bag like a monster
and its just an unspoken thing that namjoon still sees jungkook as a baby when he’s fully capable of knocking out a whole army of soldiers with a simply pistol and knife
*cue jungkook doing his silly dance moves while on mission and namjoon watches over him like a proud dad*
he may or may not join in and accidentally knock out a bodyguard while doing so
sometimes namjoon is too preoccupied with thinking up a storm that at least one of the younger boys have to follow him
the three youngsters always play rock paper scissors because they just Dont Know what will happen when they’re with namjoon
one time taehyung went on a mission with him and both of them nearly got their legs cut off from a chainsaw
or the time jimin went with him and needed to wear an eyepatch for an entire week because namjoon somehow managed to light the flare right in his face
you on the other hand, knows how to avoid his unintended attacks like a professional
people even think you might have a third eye that sees the future or something
because you managed to dodge nearly all of namjoon’s ‘accidents’
but that’s mainly because you’ve grown up with him nearly all your life
and sustained at least 457 injuries throughout your childhood
that boy from ilsan has grown up with you
although the career the both had right now was definitely not something the both of you would imagine
you’re still very grateful to know that the both of you share the same job and you were relived that he wasn’t going to do something so dangerous alone
despite the many dodging you have done, even the smallest things hurt you sometimes
for example, that time where namjoon accidentally chipped a cup and forgot about it so he used it to serve you and it cut your lip
you didn’t really mind but namjoon kept apologizing to you every half an hour for a week straight until you literally had to knock some sense into him
but even with his clumsy ways, he still managed to look out for you during missions and cover for you when you need it
he would literally run an entire mile to save you from a bunch of qualified soldiers even though you could handle them yourselves
but he’s very adamant on keeping promises, especially the one he made with your mom when he was 5, promising that he would protect you no matter what
and it gets pretty annoying sometimes, because he also includes nagging at you and making up rules as protecting you
“you have to sleep right now, we have a mission at 6 in the morning tomorrow,”
“but it’s only 10,”
“did i fking stutter?”
“this is why i like RJ more than you,”
yes,,, that’s jin’s codename dont even question it
and honestly, it might have hurt to hear you say that whenever he nags at you, his intention only being the best for you in mind
and maybe because he doesnt just see you as his childhood friend
but whenever jin brings up the topic about how he always boss you around like your mom even though the rest gets away with it
he would always say because he doesnt want you to get hurt
and that was definitely true
because seeing you in pain would only make himself suffer, and he didnt want to put up with either of that
remember that cut you had on your lip from the chipped cup, he actually genuinely felt super guilty about it
so any of your injuries would be tended by jimin while namjoon tries to avoid you until your fully bandaged and treated
and you Know™
the both of you have been best friends for so long, how could you not tell how he felt in that moment??
and every time that flash of guilt in his eyes appear when he sees you get grazed by a gunshot or a knife??
but you dont mention it and instead lighten up the mood by doing silly things with the boys and eventually force him to join in
the wounds hurt when you move but seeing him so down hurts even more
i guess thats what love is called or sumn hohoho
another day comes and it doesnt really come to your attention until namjoon sends an alert to all your phones to have an impromptu meeting in the living room
as soon as everyone gathered, some still drowsy from their naps while others had just arrived back from a mission, namjoon stands by the coffee table while the rest took a seat on the couches
“we’ve got another mission for us in about 12 hours or so. Agust, i need you to be on watchout by the roof, bunny and calico will be the driveaway car. V and sunshine , you’ll be on the left wing while me and angel will get the right wing. rj, i need you to be the eagle eye and watch over the security cameras. we’ll talk about this in detail after 6 hours. everyone got it?”
everyone nodded at once, taking in all the information while they got into their pairs to discuss things before the next meeting
you looked back to namjoon, worry in his eyes as he paced back and forth - it seemed like this mission was a bigger one than the others
“joon, what’s up?” you whispered, bringing him to the corner of the room as he sighed
“we’re going to infiltrate a highly-secured building where they keep the most treasured jewels and the boss needs us to make a clean escape no matter what,” he cursed under his breath, running a hand through his hair
it was probably the fifth time he had done that throughout the last ten minutes
“hey, look at me,” you put on a small smile
and with slight hesitation, he looks back into your glimmering eyes full of hope
and he feels he might be in too deep - his heart beating a mile per minute and the sound of his surroundings began to fade and his ears only focused on you
“you’re the smartest guy around here, and i’m definitely sure you’ll come up with at least something before the next meeting. besides, the others are just as capable, believe in them and we’ll succeed. Stop worrying, big guy,”
you chuckled, knocking his head slightly with your forefinger, eliciting a soft dry chuckle from his lips
“thank you, angel. now let’s get to planning,” he smirked half-heartedly, moving to the basement where all the excessive planning were made
with the help of energy drinks, coffee and jin’s snacks, the both of you managed to come up with three different routes
the first was the safest, yet took the longest
while the other two was much more riskier and needed all of you to put at least 200% of your efforts put into it
and if any of you didnt, it would either result in permanent injury, or worse, death
but namjoon tried his best to stray away from that topic, and was persistent on following plan A as much as possible
it was the least he could do to ensure your safety and the others
six hours pass in a blink of an eye, and everyone was gathered and ready with a list of suggestions to ensure the success of the mission
with the help of yoongi’s new and improved equipment as well as thorough planning on everyone’s part, nearly two-thirds of the planning was done
all that was left was to check if everything and everyone was in order
and then the actual thing would begin
time passes, and thirty minutes were left
jin took his seat by the multiple monitors, checking each and everyone’s navigating device as well as their in-ears
yoongi had already went to the destination an hour earlier to check on things while he set up his sniper and telescope
jungkook and jimin prepped up the car once they were done suiting up and preparing disguises when needed
while you, namjoon, taehyung and hoseok had slipped into your bulletproof vests and lightweight boots and choosing the preferred weapon
once the codename for the mission to begin had been uttered by joon, everyone went into full effect and ran to their spots
with swift movements and constant scanning of the area, you anf namjoon managed to get half way through the tight security
of course, having to ‘hurt’ a little more than a handful of people
while taehyung and hoseok crawled through the vents since the left wing’s structure barely had any blind spots for them to squeeze into
after nearly an hour and a half of crawling and sticking your backs to walls, you and namjoon managed to find the room where the required jewels were kept and protected
while namjoon deciphered the passcode, you were on lookout, eyes scanning every side of the hallway while your finger remained on the trigger
as soon as you caught shadows coming from the right, you signalled namjoon to go faster, heart pumping through your chest yet your words remained calm and cool
“shadows. how many more minutes?” you questioned him, your arms getting into position as you focused your silencer onto the approaching targets
“3 minutes at most. alert rj if you’re shooting,” as soon as you captured sight of the guards you were all ready to shoot
“rj, camera at the core,” you whispered, focusing your silencer onto one of their foreheads
“roger that, angel,” as soon as he had been alerted, with a quick push of your finger, a bullet shot through, killing the guard in an instant while the other had their firearms aimed right back at you
you aimed at the second guard as quick as you could and shooting him right between his eyes as well
but just as you did, he was able to shoot right through your left arm, leaving you hissing in pain while namjoon finally managed to unlock the room
“hey angel- shit. apply pressure, we’re almost done,” namjoon whispered, placing his arm above yours which you had been covering the wound from bleeding any further
“we got held back a little at the left wing but we’re here now,” a familiar voice softly echoes from above you
taehyung unhinged the vent’s opening, placing it to the side and hopping out, hoseok following suite
before they could speak about your injury, namjoon interrupted, “v, stay here with angel. me and sunshine will get the jewel and once i tell you the signal, the both of you take route B,”
taehyung didnt have the heart to go against his words, the aura namjoon emitted just from his expression told taehyung that there were no time for discussion
before namjoon could enter the laser-filled room, you held him back by his sleeve and shot him a smile “stop worrying in that big head of yours and get that damn jewel,”
a small smile crept onto his lips, yet worry never left his features
as namjoon and hoseok disappeared into the room, taehyung tended to your wounds with the mini first aid box jimin had made for everyone
the bullet was probably still lodged in your arm but taehyung had to make sure the wound had been disinfected before tying it up from wrapping a quick bandage over it
whilst you looked out for anymore oncoming guards
amidst the silence, taehyung was curious and he could never really contain that curiosity
“so you confessed to him yet?” taehyung looked back into your wide ones before returning his attention to tying up the bandage
“we’re on a mission, v. not now,” you groaned rubbing your temples with your free arm
“i’m just asking. besides you should do that soon before i do it myself,” he shrugged, tying a second knot to ensure it doesnt fall off
“or i’ll help tell too,” a voice echoed in your intercoms, mischievous giggles you could never mistake for someone else
“rj i swear to god, you’re supposed to watch out for us, not listen into our conversations so you can, i dont know, ‘spill the tea’.” once your wound was treated, you held up your rifle and watched out for the hallway on the right while taehyung watched out for the left
but when the sound of alarms rang throughout the building, you just knew namjoon and hoseok had already gotten their hands on the jewels
but you werent leaving until namjoon had given the word
“get ready, v. this is gonna be a bumpy ride,” you huffed, aiming your gun to the right while taehyung looked through his scope “i’m always ready,” he smirked
with every bullet you fired, the burning sensation in your wound grew even more, but you couldnt let the pain distract you from one of the most important missions that you had been given
and if namjoon were to know the pain you were in, he wouldn’t let you out of headquarters for an entire month
once the first wave of guards were wiped out, namjoon’s voiced echoed throughout everyone’s intercoms, taehyung giving you a knowing look as you nodded your head
with the rush of adrenaline, you and taehyung made way for route B, never letting your guard down as you fetched a grenade from your pocket
once you entered a single hallway, you blew up the side the both of you had entered from and kept running
and as much as your lungs burned and the pain in your arm began to worsen, you couldnt let it bring you or anyone else down
the door at the end of the hallway swings open
and you’re more than relieved to see jimin and jungkook, even if your eyes had tricked you at first glance from their disguises
“quicken your pace slowpokes, the rest are already catching up,” jungkook teased, jogging off to start the truck while jimin made sure you came out of there before the soldiers could
once everyone had hopped into the truck, jimin checked your wounds for infections
but taehyung did an amazing job at keeping it clean and covered
“rj, any sign of rm or hope?” you groaned into your intercoms, jimin redoing your bandages as you looked out for any possible danger
but jin doesnt reply and your panic rises
jimin carefully ties up the bandage and watches over your frightened expression, your brows furrowing even more with every breath you took
“rj?rj?”
“calm down angel, he’s probably helping them in escaping. we’ll see them when we get back to headquarters, alright? remember the rule?” taehyung reassured you, looking at you through the rear-view mirror
“get back safe at all cost when he says the word,” you grumble, putting your attention to the grim scenery outside
something didnt feel right but orders were orders
once everyone alighted from the truck, jimin took out the necessary medicine for the wounds he had to treat
“if its just a cut, wash it and you’ll be fine,” jimin shooed the rest away as he tended to you on the sofa
“why does she get all the treatment,” taehyung raises a brow, tossing his bulletproof vest to the side
“because unlike some of you, she’s an actual angel,” jimin shrugged, picking out his tweezers and a cotton ball drenched in alcohol
“it’s gonna hurt but we cant have you with a bullet in your arm for the rest of your life,” he chuckled, handing you a handkerchief to bite and relieve the pain onto as he began his work
in half an hour, jimin managed to remove the bullet and close up the wound, not allowing the others to disturb you while you went to rest in your room
but all you could do was pace around your room, your fingers fidgeting around with anything you could get a hold of
a soft knock on your door made you think it was jimin
but when you finally see the face that had been in your head the past few hours, you let out a long and relieved sigh
“missed me too much?” he chuckled until you nearly knocked him down with your hug
“hell yeah i did. you think i wouldnt?” you mumbled into his sweaty and stained clothes
but you didnt mind because he was finally back, safe and sound and in one whole piece
“did your get your wound treated?” he asked, gently peeling you off of him to check your arm while you were too busy admiring his face
you were so in the moment to not realize namjoon staring back at you
“dont ever do that again,” you mumble, a slight tremore in your voice but your eyes remain in contact with his
“angel you know i had to-”
“how can i let my childhood crush run out there like some dumbass. you think i can stand to lose my best friend?”
you were teary-eyed at this point, while he looked back at you in confusion and concern
“wait what was the first part?” he muttered, unsure if what he heard was true or not
“i like you a lot you idiot. why do you think i always cuddle up to you after a mission, or when you’re the one who worries the hell out of me the most or that-”
you were cut off with his lips planted on yours and you could feel his lips curl into a small smile
once he parted away from you, his smile stretched so far that his dimples seemed to deepen with every second
while your cheeks turned bright red under his gaze
“i’ve been waiting too long to hear that from you,”
“then you should’ve grown a pair and confessed to me, you handsome dork,” playfully nudging him
until namjoon once again, loses his footing and tumbles onto the floor, bringing you along with him onto the hard floor
the both of you groaned in pain
but your door swings open, revealing jimin with bag of medicine but his face who once had a concerned smile on his face turned into a devilish smirk
“so the lover birds finally confessed huh? and already skipping many bases,,, i’ll just leave so the both of you can continue,”
jimin giggled like a high school girl as he closed the door
but the shout of announcement that vibrated the walls was a clear sign that the others were NOT going to let the both of you live
a/n: im just gonna post whatever i want at this point and finish up all my wips :///

DAY TWO
It’s raining heavily. And there’s no coffee. Not a good start.
We breakfast early. It’s a big day. Greater discipline is urged by Silviu, with his eye on one or two.
We’re going high. It’s time for warm wet weather gear.
Layers, waterproof jackets, gilets, boot covers…We are all wearing leggings except Ali who prefers to display a fine pair of Yorkshire knees. Bikes get fiddled with, the rain abates somewhat, and we leave.
The countryside initially is the same mountain plains we saw yesterday. We see horses, sheep, goats.
Mike is with us, adding his banter to the mix. There’s much interest in his e-bike. We all will get there someday, some sooner than others.
Ali gets a puncture. Mark gets chased by three large dogs and achieves a personal best for his of 1,000 watts (pressure on his pedals) – now dubbed the Three Dog Surge (TDS).
The road becomes a long climb towards the Prevoj Sedlo. A high mountain pass at 1900m. The views all the way up are stunning. At the top we can see far into the next valley. There’s snow. It’s cold and starting to rain again and we are getting cold.
On the way down, we stop at a tiny mountain hut and are greeted by Dolina Tišine, a large man, who ushers us in to sit around the wood stove and drink “chai” a blackcurrant flavoured tea with honey. He’s remarkably friendly. As is his Rottweiller, Bosko.
Andy takes some mug shots (geddit!).
Ahh, he’s selling some schnapps, would you like to try some? Ali asks for two bottles and offers a €50 note asking how much they will be. “That’s perfect” says Dolina, whipping away the note. We can’t help but feel the price was variable, but it has been such a welcome break from the weather.
We leave warm and in good spirits. Into the rain, and a long, bitterly cold descent. A missed turning, but no matter. We keep descending. At the long tunnel from yesterday, we form up two by two and ride in a tight peleton with the van behind protecting us. That’s the way to do it – with discipline.
At the bottom, we are frozen, refuel, try to unlock shoulder muscles rigid from the descent and prepare for the next climb to lunch.
Another pretty valley. Another climb. The pecking order is beginning to be established. Mark is as competitive as ever. John, quietly purrs up behind ready to overtake. Mark veers wildly from side to side, “there’s no room John, you can’t get past”. “Please Mark, stop being so childish – the sugar high from my gel is just kicking in”. Hamish, meanwhile is always there, holding himself back today, but still with a level of power we have not seen before.
There’s also a developing community in the van.
Lunch is a picnic. Initially we were going to sit under some corrugated sheets, around a table, outside a hut belonging to some locals. But out local guide suggest that they are drunk and unsafe. The film Deliverence comes to mind, banjo’s start playing and we move on quickly and shelter under the awning of a dilapidated hotel. Toma has done us proud – bread, hams, cheeses… Ali reveals his OCD (obsessive crisp disorder).
It’s a 600m+ climb straight after lunch. Martin sets off early. All our legs are weary. Is it a little steeper? Ali enters his pain cave. All agree it is a fabulous climb up a wooded valley. But it’s exhausting. Martin makes it to the top in a supreme effort of courage and determination.
The road then rolls over the top into a 1000m descent over 11-12 miles. At 30 to 40 miles an hour your eyes need to be on the road, but the valley is jaw dropping. Steep sides, a river runs down the middle far below, clouds of mist intermingle with the fur trees. We meet Dragan, a remarkably self assured 7-8 year old boy who had run down to meet us through the most idyllic meadow of wild flowers. He wasn’t interested in football, “have you got any money?”.
The road is wet, the rain is light and intermittent, we are wet through, but the warmer air lower down the valley is appreciated.
The final climb is on a main road, with large lorries and buses flying past. We ride in a peloton, with the van behind. There’s a spectacular viaduct – not for vertigo sufferers and several short tunnels. It’s a long slow slog at a slow pace but eventually we arrive at the top and stop for a tea.
A short descent brings us to another ski resort, Kolassin. It’s been a long hard day. Andy’s yoga class has more attendees.
70 miles. 2,400m ascent.

2017 in Review
I read mdA’s year in review and wanted to use her template to reflect on my year, too.
1 - What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before?
Hung out with a group of friends and slept over without worrying about all the studying I’d have to do that weekend, went to a classmate’s/friend’s wedding, signed up to take Step 1 (omgomgomg), went through a messy break up, traveled to Europe by myself, rode on a train for the first time! (which actually took 6 hours instead of 4 because something was wrong with the train and they had to fix it halfway through the journey), killed a spider, read Lolita, went on a vacation for Spring Break, completed a project and wrote a research manuscript from start to finish, went to the Weeknd’s concert!  2 - Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I dont remember if I made any resolutions last year...I usually don’t. But, for this year, I am going to continue doing what I have learned to do these past few months:
1) focus on myself more (my health, my fitness, my happiness)
2) get rid of toxic people and distractions in my life
3) study for and do well on boards
4) No more social media until after boards
3 - Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
4 - Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5 - What countries did you visit?
Some European countries, Mexico, Japan.
6 - What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
Better, more supportive friends. I used to hang out with a group of gunners (they literally wouldnt share resources because they ‘dont want other people to do well on boards’ and didnt understand why that was upsetting to me). I distanced myself and I’ve been happier.  7 - What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
April 14th, went on a spontaneous quick trip to Japan mid semester and learned most of renal phys on the 15hr plane rides to and from Tokyo. Stayed at the Disney resort and had a magical time.
8 - What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Taking care of my mental health, getting to know myself better, submitting my manuscript for publication. This year was full of ups and downs and many firsts, so I’ve learned a lot and have gained experiences that I value very much. That’s an accomplishment to me.
9 - What was your biggest failure?
I stopped running a few months ago, but I plan on getting back into it before this semester starts!  10 - Did you suffer illness or injury?
Thankfully, nothing serious.  11 - What was the best thing you bought?
I bought myself a ring and I absolutely love it! I love the way it looks on my finger and like wearing it.
As for practical things, I bough an iPad Pro and now that’s all I use to take notes, study, etc. I don’t use paper anymore and it’s really nice to have all my material in one place.  12 - Whose behavior merited celebration?
All of the women and men who shared their stories using #MeToo. My parents for putting up with me and taking care of me when I visit, physically and mentally tired. The one student in our class who shared his struggles with suicide and depression in an effort to help others.  13 - Whose behavior made you appalled or depressed?
a lot of politicians...people trying to take away net neutrality, Trump and his tweets, the ex who told me [after we’d talked about doing residencies in the same hospital and how many children we wanted, etc.] that he wouldnt be introducing me to his parents or be able to marry me because I wasn't Egyptian and his mom wouldnt approve [Boy, bye], the mom who tried to exploit money using a bullying video.
14 - Where did most of your money go?
BOARDS. Who knew it was so expensive to schedule board exams...*le sigh* Also, a lot of money spent on resources...*le cry*
15 - What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I woke up to the first snow of the season and I could not contain myself!  16 - What song(s) will always remind you of 2017?
The Weeknd-Staryboy  17 - Compared to this time last year, are you: I. Happier or sadder?
A little bit of both...sadder and more stressed in some ways, but happier and more content in other ways. Overall, I’m in a good place.
II. Thinner or fatter?
Thinner.
III. Richer or poorer?
Poorer.
18 - What do you wish you’d done more of?
More dancing.
19 - What do you wish you’d done less of?
Social media.  20 - How will you be spending/spent christmas?
Hung out, made and ate xmas dinner, and enjoyed great company <3
21 - Did you fall in love in 2017?
No, i thought I did at some point tho.  22 - How many one-night stands?
1
23 - What was your favorite tv program?
The Blacklist.
24 - Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Yeah.  25 - What was the best book you read?
Both Nejma and Salt by Nayyirah Waheed were great reads.  26 - What was your greatest musical discovery?
Dua Lipa.  27 - What did you want and get?
A ring, cute Timberland boots, an iPad Pro w an apple pen, an A in neuro (neuro is our most difficult system, it’s a 6 credit hr course with a lab, and I was scared to take it. But, i ended up really liking it!) 28 - What was your favorite film of this year?
I haven't been to the movies in years. I prefer Netflix/Amazon prime and watching from the comfort of my bed/couch.
29 - What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Turned 23. I studied for an exam, but got to celebrate with my family 2 weeks later. Lots of good food and cake!  30 - What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If I had the wisdom I have today at the beginning of this year (2017) haha
If people were kinder to each other.
31 - How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?
scrubs 90% of the time. business casual or professional 5% of the time. Leggings, sweaters, sundresses, boots/heels, long dresses, etc. 5% of the time.  32 - What kept you sane?
family, Netflix shows, shopping, traveling.  33 - Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Pietro Boselli *heart eyes*
34 - What political/social issue stirred you the most?
Healthcare equality, DACA/immigration issues, net neutrality
^ Im going to keep MdA’s answer because yes!! 35 - Who did you miss?
My maternal grandmother who's been dead for 6-7 years now, but I still think of her some times. Also, my best friend who’s moved to another state for grad school.  36 - Who was the best new person you met?
I became closer to someone in my class this past year and I love hanging out with her. She is always so cheerful and optimistic. I love that about her.
37 - Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017:
Trust your intuition and don’t settle.

Today’s overly-long mental health post falls into the category of “Things I should definitely tell a therapist, but I can’t afford one so I’m dumping stuff on Tumblr instead.” It’s a doozy. Read the tags before continuing, because I’m not really able to sugarcoat things tonight. I will say, though, that I am perfectly alright and not currently in any danger, so don’t worry that you might need to get me help. I’m just posting this to get it off my chest, and because addressing this issue directly is probably the best way to handle it.
If you haven’t checked the tags already, here’s a content warning for suicide, because that’s pretty much all I’m talking about today. I don’t want you to read this if you’re worried you can’t handle it, or if you think it’ll cause you any distress. Despite the serious subject matter, I’m actually doing fine right now, and passing this post doesn’t mean you’re ignoring a cry for help or leaving me in danger. Everything’s fine.
Okay?
So, I’ve blogged a lot about my depression, so it probably isn’t a surprise for me to say that I’ve dealt with thoughts of suicide. Here’s the story about that:
The first time I can remember thinking about killing myself, I was about 11-12 years old. I can’t remember exactly what prompted it, but I’m pretty sure it was something from school. since that was the age I started to transition from “Excellent student, has a bright future” to “Smart but doesn’t apply themself, could have a bright future if they shaped up.” I do remember sitting alone in the basement, petting the old stuffed cat I used to fall asleep hugging every night, and wondering if I could have it buried with me. I wasn’t in any danger of actually hurting myself, but it was a comfort to be able to imagine it.
I’ve never admitted that to another living soul before now. At the time, I didn’t have anyone I wanted to tell it to; my parents were well meaning, but had no idea how to provide emotional support, I had no idea how to ask them for it, and my “friends” were more of a source of pain than of relief from pain. Years later, looking back, I’d see wanting to kill myself over petty school issues as something embarrassing instead of a warning sign. I didn’t know what depression was at that point, much less that I might have it. Maybe not coincidentally, that was also the same age that I started to suffer from recurring insomnia.
Since then, the idea of suicide has been a regular part of my life. I’ve never even so much as made a plan or attempt for actually going through with it, thankfully, but looking back it’s hard to say how close I might have come on some of those occasions. I didn’t get alarmed over it. It just felt like I was imagining a hypothetical solution to problems I couldn’t see any other way of solving. I didn’t want to die, exactly, but the surge of relief I felt at the thought of dying and escaping all my troubles was possibly the most comforting, soothing sensation I’ve ever felt. It probably still would be, though I no longer allow myself to rely on those thoughts for relief.
After I was diagnosed with depression, I realized that I might actually be at risk of committing suicide; not in a “call a crisis hotline because I’m about to do something terrible to myself” way, but in the sense that one day I might fall into a depression deep enough that I’d try to take my own life to escape it. I didn’t want to die, but I suddenly realized that my mental illness was pretty much trying to kill me, using my own brain and body as the murder weapon. It was a scary thought, but it also meant that I could now do something about it.
Since then, I’ve tried to keep this in mind. I try not to let myself fantasize about killing myself, even if I don’t feel any urge to follow through on those fantasies. When I catch myself having suicidal thoughts, I try not to let them go unchallenged. I remind myself that I want to live, When I find myself thinking of suicide as a comfort, when I feel bone-deep certainty that giving up and dying would be easier, less painful, I remember that these beliefs are only temporary, that they’ll pass if I let them, and that I’ll soon be able to say again with confidence that I want to stay alive. I try to keep in mind that, when I have suicide on my mind, I’m not thinking rationally because faults in my brain chemistry are tripping my personality’s metaphorical self destruct switch. More than all that, I try to keep up with general self care, to keep myself from falling apart so much that I become vulnerable to self-destructive impulses.
I haven’t really told anyone any of this in part because I’ve been scared of their reactions. I don’t want people to treat me like a loaded gun, or a box of old dynamite that might explode at any moment if handled improperly. I would much prefer that people recognize that I’m aware of the problem and the danger it presents, and that I know what to do if I ever cross the threshold to the point where my life is in peril. I also don’t want people’s pity, for the purely selfish reason that I don’t have the energy to reassure them that I’m okay and pretend that they’re helping. Some issues are helped by a comforting hug and expressions of sympathy; this one is not. The simple situation is that my brain is fucked up, but I’m dealing with it as best I can.
I would be nice, though, not to have to pretend that I’m not dealing with this stuff, and for people to sometimes recognize what a damned drain it can be. The fact that I’m not only still alive, but still determined to remain alive is one of my biggest achievements, because I’m quite sure that it didn’t just happen on its own like it does for some people. More than once I’ve thought to myself that, if I was being paid an hourly wage for the time and effort I spent keeping myself together, I wouldn’t have to hunt for a job. It would be nice if trying to manage my preoccupation with the idea of killing myself was the only big issue I needed to deal with, as opposed to something society expects me to handle on my own time in between producing profit and keeping the rest of my life in order.
I’m going to take a break from tumblr after posting this, maybe for a few hours, maybe a day or two. I don’t know how people are going to respond to this post, so I want to make sure I have enough energy to handle that before I check back. I’m going to reiterate that I’m not in any danger, I currently have no urge, no impulse, and no plan to take my own life, and I’m coping about as well now as ever. For anyone who’s read this far down, thank you for listening. Being able to say all this is a great help, even if it was intensely emotionally draining, and I think it’s going to make it easier to stay positive moving forwards.

1-20 for the OC thing
oh jeeze thanks
[fair warning im no writer, my oc probably isnt super interesting. at least shes not just a stock character though]
1. What's their full name? If they're an alien and their name is in their native planet's language, have you thought about what it means? - Myla. i dont think tieflings have last names usually? so she just has the first name. also its not an infernal-sounding name because she was born and spent the first few years of her life in a major city with lots of humans, so the closer to “”normal”” she was the better, discrimination-wise
2. Say your OC made a playlist on Spotify. What bands would be on that playlist? Any specific genres? - she would probably listen to a lot of indie/alternative stuff, and would probably gravitate towards moody acoustic stuff
3. What kind of video games would they play? Any specific titles? - anything with a focus on puzzlesolving, mystery, or exploration. i think she would be more likely to spend hundreds of hours on a few games rather than play a whole bunch of games just once, and she probably wrote the gamefaq walkthroughs for those games that she did focus on
4. What would their favorite cartoons be, and why? What would their favorite characters be? - off the top of my head, gravity falls, again for the mystery component. but also because bill would provide some inspiration for applications of the thaumaturgy cantrip.
5. What's their favorite type of weather? Do they like to do anything specific on days when the weather is how they like it? - shes quite a recluse, so she probably prefers overcast or light rain. those would be the days when she’d go off into the forest to scavenge for anything potentially useful for spells/magic
6. If they're a fan of Hot Chocolate, Tea, or Coffee, how do they like either of those drinks prepared? - normally tea, but if she really needed to feel cozy then she’d go for hot chocolate
7. What kind of animals would they like as a pet? What names would they give their pets if they got any? If they already have pet's what are their names? - she doesnt have a pet, but she’s been practicing summoning a familiar. no name for it yet because she hasnt commited to what form she prefers it to take yet, but she’s leaning towards either a mongoose or some kind of bird.
8. How does your OC keep track of time? Do they have a planner? A calendar? - poorly. not that she couldn’t if she wanted to, she just doesnt care most of the time. when the need does strike her, she tends to just peek out through the blinds.
9. How do they write? Do they write in cursive? How do they dot their i's and j's? Do they have specific ways that they write certain letters? - a messy scrawl to the point of near illegibility, but she still dots the i’s and j’s. she writes very quickly to try and get as much information written down as she can as efficiently as possible. the downside of this is that half the time it will take her a second to figure out what she wrote down.
10. What's their favorite time of day? - early night, the best time to pour over research without still being groggy from sleep, or needing more yet.
11. What kinds of foods and drinks do they like? Do they like certain foods to be fried? Do they prefer certain foods to be prepared hot/cold? - as a tiefling, she probably prefers most food she eats to be warm, but thats about it. low effort foods would be her best friend, i doubt she cares to spend the time cooking. too much stress to make a big meal.
12. If they were an actual character in an animated film or TV series, who would they be voiced by? Do they have a certain accent that the person would need to perfect? - her voice is mostly just a slightly more strained ms pauling, so i guess ashly burch would be her actress.
13. If you are an artist, and if your OC can draw as well, could you replicate what their artstyle looks like? Or, if you can't, could you describe it? - she would mostly be drawing diagrams, so they would be some sort of facsimile of realism, but without many artistic flourishes
14. If your OC owned a Tumblr blog, what kind of content would they post? - she would have two blogs. one: a doccumentation blog detailing any and all discoveries she made, with diligently maintained masterlists for every concievable topic, and two: a forest/astronomy aesthetic sideblog
15. How do they type? Do they use emojis? Do abbreviate and shorten words? - she probably types with some semblance of grammar during doccumentation, and when writing things impersonally, but during regular conversation she probably uses very little, to the point of it being kind of hard to tell what shes saying. she probably wouldnt use emojis unless it was ironically, but she definitely abbreviates words a lot, again to the detriment of the legibility.
16. If your OC was a film director, what kind of movies would they make? - a doccumentary. about magic or something.
17. If your OC was a musical artist, what genres would they do? - same stuff as on the playlist from one of the earlier questions
18. What type of singing voice does your OC have? - probably not one very good. she spent enough years completely alone that her normal speaking voice isnt very strong, though she can preform magic phrases with near perfect resonance.
19. Does your OC like to collect things? What kind of things do they collect? - literally any and all information. she’s gotta doccument everything she can.
20. Was your OC inspired by anything? Another character? A person? - honestly she was based a little on cornifer, and to a lesser extent quirrel, from hollow knight. i liked the idea of having a character who goes around exploring for the sake of gaining knowledge and writing it down, collecting a huge supository in the process. then i figured she would have spent a lot of time cooped up studying before she would need to go out into the world, and from there i got the fact that her social skills probably suffered on account of that. then i just added a semi-tragic reason for her to have withdrawn into study in the first place.
god that took longer to do than i thought it would

Op Ed: How Fiat Could Fall and Bitcoin Could Soar
Argentina’s Failed Peg
In the 1990s, the Argentine peso was pegged to the U.S. dollar. This meant that the Argentine government guaranteed that anyone could exchange one Argentine peso for one U.S. dollar. If you had 1,000 Argentine pesos in your bank account, you could walk into the bank and ask for US$1,000 and the teller would hand it over.
By 2001, the peg had become unsustainable and the government of Argentina abandoned it. As a result, the exchange rate went into freefall.
Imagine if you looked at your bank account and the value of your assets had gone down by 75 percent over the course of a year without you spending a dime. That’s effectively what happened to the citizens of Argentina in 2001.
In less than a year, the exchange rate went from 1:1 to 4:1. If you had $10,000 worth of pesos in your bank account in 2001, a year later you would have had only $2,500.
Attempts to withdraw U.S. dollars as the exchange rate plummeted were thwarted for most citizens because the run on the bank meant there were no U.S. dollars left to hand out.
I spent a year living with a retired woman in Córdoba in the 2000s who recounted to me the feeling of watching her retirement savings slashed by 75 percent as she slept on the street outside the bank, hoping to be able to withdraw it.
Though few of us who grew up in the developed world can relate, this story is not unique to Argentina in 2001.
The Debut of Paper Money
As Jack Weatherford details in his book, The History of Money, the story of fiat began in the 17th century, which marked the debut of paper money on the modern world scene. As long as this paper money was supported by some form of commodity money, like gold or silver, all seemed well. Carrying and holding paper seemed just as reliable, and far more convenient, than holding the actual precious metals that backed them.
Invariably, however, the government or bank in charge of printing the money issued more paper than it had metal to back it. Whether or not this was the “right” thing to do is a matter of debate, but once the devaluation process began, it inevitably spiraled, with more and more bills being issued at less and less value.
An analysis of fiat currencies in the 20th century found that there were 56 episodes of hyperinflation. Another study found that the average life expectancy for a fiat currency is 27 years: 20 percent failed through hyperinflation (37 currencies experience hyperinflation in the 20th century), 21 percent were destroyed by war, 12 percent were destroyed by independence, 24 percent were monetarily reformed, and only 23 percent are still in circulation.
Of those that remain in circulation, all have lost huge amounts of their original value as measured in commodity money like gold or silver. Founded in 1694, the British pound Sterling is the oldest fiat currency in existence. At the ripe old age of 325 years, it must be considered a highly successful fiat currency. Yet, the British pound was originally defined as 12 ounces of silver, so its worth today is about half of 1 percent of its original value.
The U.S. dollar was taken off of the gold standard in 1971 when it was 1/35th an ounce of gold. By 2011, it had already lost 97 percent of its value.
In his book, The Ascent of Money, historian Niall Ferguson relates that one of the main ways this seems to have happened is that rulers were forced to print money to finance wars. Once one ruler started doing this, it became a classic prisoner’s dilemma and others had to follow suit. It would be better for everyone if no one fired up the presses, but as soon as one ruler or government warmed them up, then everyone else had to keep up or they risked being conquered.
Part of the reason Germany lost World War I and suffered worse inflation of their currency than the Allies was because the German and Austrian bond market was much less developed than the French, English and American markets, which had access to far more capital. Unable to raise money through bond issuances, Germany was forced to print money faster than other powers to finance their war effort.
It’s also worth noting that in a democratic society, politicians are often unwilling to raise taxes or balance the budget because of the expected voter anger. For them, inflation and the devaluation of the currency are preferable because they constitute a hidden tax.
The consequences of poor decisions about monetary policy can take decades to show up, but politicians’ terms only last a few years — kicking the can down the road to finance their constituents and donors favorite projects is a time tested way to get elected.
When you make choices about your personal spending, you inevitably run into difficult decisions — you could take out a bigger mortgage and buy a bigger house but that would mean working an extra five years before you could retire, is that worth it? The ability to print money meant that politicians could, in effect, buy the bigger house for themselves or their constituents today and make someone else work an extra five years in the future to pay for it.
Bitcoin’s Case Against Fiat
Ultimately, all the reasons for devaluation boil down to mismatched incentives between the politicians or others in control of the monetary policy and the individuals holding the currency. Any time a system lets somebody change history with a keystroke, you have no choice but to trust that everyone who can make that keystroke will be both perfectly honest and perfectly competent. Alas, humanity, much less politicians, don’t have the best track record on either of those fronts.
When the Bitcoin network went live in January 2009, Satoshi embedded the headline of a story running that day in The London Times:
“The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”
Though we can’t know for sure what was going through Satoshi’s mind(s) at the time, the most likely explanation is that Satoshi was commenting on the decisions being made in response to the 2008 global financial crisis by the small group in charge of global monetary policy. Though many people around the world were affected by these decisions, very few had any say in the matter.
Instead of impactful decisions about the monetary system, like a bailout or quantitative easing, depending on the perfect honesty and competency of a single individual or small group, Satoshi envisioned Bitcoin as a more robust monetary system, with a more distributed power structure that would make it impossible for a single individual or small group of individuals to act unilaterally.
Instead of impactful decisions about the monetary system like a bailout being reliant upon a single individual or small cabal, like the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Satoshi and the Bitcoin proponents that followed him, envision bitcoin as having a more distributed power structure, beyond the control of a single individual.
Viewed as money, bitcoin has many gold-like properties. We know exactly how many bitcoins will be created — 21 million — and the rate at which they will be created. Just as gold mining is limited by gold’s geological properties, the ability to change these variables in bitcoin is outside of the control of any one person or small group of individuals. This gives bitcoin a predictable stock-to-flow ratio. No single individual can decide to create twice as much bitcoin tomorrow, even if it is politically expedient.
However, bitcoin also as a few properties gold lacks. For one, it is easily divisible and transportable. Someone in Singapore can send 1/100th of a bitcoin to someone in Canada in less than an hour.
It is also extremely difficult to censor bitcoin transactions. If I have an internet connection and agree to pay the network’s fee, effectively nothing can stop me from sending bitcoin to anyone I want.
This doesn’t mean, of course, that bitcoin is not primarily a highly volatile tool of speculation today — it is — but it points to why many of those speculators are in the market. If central banks in any country fail to unwind their balance sheets gracefully and inflation sets in, savers will go looking for a safe place to store their wealth.
In this scenario, bitcoin, an easily divisible and transferable “digital gold,” may shine.
