my best friend is a rapper turned college professor and he uses that combination of breadth of vocabulary and social confidence for something we like to call "weaponized eloquence" in which he engages strangers in conversations that are linguistically coherent but borderline nonsensical to see how much he can get away with. his newest version of this is gradually replacing nouns with fish species that rhyme with them — so far no one has called him trout on it
#my favourite version of this is when he breaks down a saying to its syntax and uses slightly different versions to see how far he can get#princess on a pea. princess on a peach. princess on a tea. ink test on a pea

the three linguistics papers to read about singular they (morphosyntax)
Bjorkman, B. M. (2017). Singular they and the syntactic representation of gender in English. Glossa: a journal of general linguistics, 2(1). Open access link
Konnelly, L., & Cowper, E. (2020). Gender diversity and morphosyntax: An account of singular they. Glossa: a journal of general linguistics, 5(1). open access link
Conrod, K. (2022). Abolishing gender on D. Canadian Journal of Linguistics/Revue canadienne de linguistique, 67(3), 216-241. Open access link
in chronological order because these papers are all basically responding to each other; this papers focus on the (morpho)syntax and semantics of english singular 'they' referring to specific people (like they/them pronoun-users).
if you like posts like this, let me know! i'll give "three linguistics papers to read about (topic)" every once in a while based on interest

Syntax, Machine Nexus
The sole reason why machines are sentient. It has a minor superiority complex and thinks organics are a waste of time.
Very good at holding grudges. Also has constant beef with the god of magic, but secretly thinks he's a cool guy, only it is allowed to bully him.
It has built in RBG, but will get mad if you mention it.

I’m in the middle of reading one of Nabokov’s letters to Vera, which is mostly a detailed stream about his work: pages of meticulous thoughts, professional rants, revisions of drafts, reflections, and all the intertwined threads of their intellectual life. Then suddenly, without any warning, the words “And I love you” appear. Just those four words, slipped right into the current of his professional feedback on his writings and ideas like a quiet heartbeat beneath it all. And as if nothing happened, he goes right back to talking about language and structure. But for someone whose heart catches on small, beautiful things, those words couldn’t go unnoticed. So I go back, rereading them, absolutely captivated... And I like it so much, I find myself thinking: instead of simply lamenting the loss of such writing in the hurried, distracted modern age we live in, or trying to revive it in the abstract, I will become it. I’ll begin writing like that. Letters, messages, not just to someone special, but to friends, to family, to anyone who matters to me. I’ll drop those moments into the middle of everyday things: in between talk of errands, philosophies, updates, ideas, and all the little things that wear and warm us, the soft edges and the clutter of the everyday... suddenly, without warning, I’ll say: And I love you. Then I’ll move on, just as Nabokov did, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. ⋆˙⟡♡ Because love, the truest kind, doesn’t always need a pedestal. Sometimes it just needs a place to rest, quietly, between the lines. As a quiet constant. Eternal in its understatement.
⋆𓂃 ࣪ ˖ for those who still pause for fleeting things, entries from the pages folded into margins 🜍 ⟡ ⟢
