Dopamine Seeking
Do any other ADHDers or autistic folks find that they try to wring every last drop of dopamine out of every activity that actually gives a registerable amount of dopamine, to the point that they're wildly overstimulated/feeling ill/ no longer having and enjoyable time by the time they stop? Does anyone have trouble recognizing when to stop/ a stopping point not dictated by these uncomfortable feelings that persist after stopping? Suggestions/hacks/coping strategies? Trouble with transitions and task switching doesn't help.

The clock it's a tickin'
Of course there are not many clocks any more that ‘tick’ (I still have a thing for clockwork mechanisms), but the statement sums up what drives the lives of many people. As a teacher of senior high school biological sciences, and being part of a small group who planned the timetable each year (all manual of course), I managed to wangle a weekly block from start of the day to first recess, simply…

Task switching is probably the hardest thing for my brain to accomplish.
I generally have the attention span of a gnat and work in a role that includes constant interruptions. So, I struggle hard to switch tasks or get back on task after being interrupted. But my 2024 goal is for me and my brain to get along a bit better, and to deal with some burnout issues.
I am super reward driven. LIke if I were a dog, that would be in my adoption profile. It's not totally feasible to give myself a little snacky or break every time I complete a task (sadly). BUT, since I am a huge fountain pen nerd AND write almost constantly, whenever I need to switch tasks (or get back on task after being interrupted) I change pens...thus colors. It is so damn SATISFYING.
I've also started using a productivity timer, and budget time for tasks. My to do list will never be done, and I tend to work on the more enjoyable things until they are done, procrastinating on the less enjoyable tasks. So I end up behind on the items I hate to do...and catch-up is no fun.
I also scan my notes into OneNote weekly-ish, and type up a list of search terms beside the scanned handwritten notes, so that in a year when I am trying to remember how exactly we dealt with a specific issue, I can efficiently go to my notes. I also like OneNote because you can 'flag' action items and they will drop onto your Outlook task manager. It has a ton of other features as well, that I should probably consider utilizing. I then forward those to Asana, which is a better task manager, IMO.
Anyway, this is some nerd shit, but..hi. 🤓👋 Sharing in case anyone else finds this helpful. It has been a game changer for me.
I'm still really fucking far behind in all things, but I think that is just working in corporate healthcare in America?

My mom has this really annoying habit of talking to me about one thing (so like a total of around 3 or 4 sentences in the conversation) and then going back to what she was doing just long enough that i have now fully gotten back to what i was doing and then talking about one other related thing and then repeat like 5 more times and it's awful.
My adhd and probable/very likely autism do not like it, it's so frustrating having to switch back and forth, and while i am capable of switching my attention (so long as it's not an important task) it makes me so frustrated and angry just from the switching itself.

I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.
it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"
plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.
anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.

Imagine you're like a butler or something, and you chat with the prince about serious kingdom stuff, right?
And he gets all fancy, uses BIGG words and is just really sophisticated in his movements and vocabulary.
Then he ends the phrase with "whatever I gotta go see ya later jimmy" and just storms off

I set so many alarms and reminders.
Alarms to get up. Alarms to tell me to go to bed. Alarms to time my lunch break. Alarms to remind me I'm making tea. Calendar reminders to put the bins out and to pay bills. A timer to go off to make me start a task. A timer to make me stop a task.
And yet I am still able to snooze them all.

My biggest source of distractions is ...
… my manager! There are many many sources of distractions during the working day such as the obvious ones like email, texts and so on. There is one source of distraction though that is not talked about so much, but it was brought up in a recent conversation. The source of distractions?  “My manager”. You probably know the type. Constantly checking up on what you are doing, what you have…

It has been one of those times where switching attention is especially hard and once again I am very grateful for The Phone. The Phone contains Activities that are not subject to completion and therefore do not trap me like a book or project traps me. Being able to do something that is engaging but doesn't pull me into deep focus is a great relief at the moment.
