With all this hype for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, I have been desperately hoping that we get to see one of my favourite guardians, and one who I feel is criminally underrated, Bug!!
(Spoilers for Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest ahead)
Tumblr media
To fully explain why bug is so underrated, we have to go back to the Annihilation event. Annihilation was a huge crossover event from 2006 that brought all of Marvel's cosmic superheroes together to fight a common foe, Annihilus. This helped pull the cosmic side of Marvel back into popularity and gave a fanbase to characters who were previously obscure. One of these obscure characters was Peter Quill AKA Star Lord. While not playing a huge role, Star Lord was an entertaining side character who seemed to gain the largest popularity boost from the event.
This takes us into Annihilation: Conquest! Things are kicked off when Star Lord tries to aid the Kree empire in rebuilding after the war. He accidently gets them enslaved by robots. The Kree respond by drafting him into their military and forcing him to go on suicide missions for them. But he's not alone! Star Lord is joined by a cast of characters so obscure, only the most intense Marvel fans would know who they are. Joining Star Lord was Gabriel Vargas AKA Captain Universe, Sharra Neramani AKA Deathcry, Mantis, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and our favourite two toed guardian, Bug! This series reads almost like a blueprint for the Guardians of the Galaxy and is a good read, especially if you're a Guardians fan!! The team goes on missions, people die, and eventually the day is saved!
This brings us to the formation of the modern day Guardians of the Galaxy. Star Lord feels guilty for accidentally starting a second huge space disaster only a few years after the first, so he assembles a team to prevent any more from happening. He does this by grabbing all the heavy hitters from the Annihilation: Conquest event: Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Adam Warlock, and Phyla-Vell. He also recruits every surviving member of his team except Bug, this being: Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Mantis. The team gets a base in Knowhere, where they meet and recruit chief of security Cosmo! Having Bug be the only surviving member of Star Lord's free trial Guardians still standing who doesn't get recruited is pretty awful for the guy, but he does get his moment to shine! When the team encounters drama and half the members quit, Rocket reforms the team, recruiting Bug and Major Victory!! On the first mission of the new team, Bug cracks jokes about how he wasn't good enough to make the original cut of the roster.
Tumblr media
From left to right we have: Phyla-Vell (now going by Martyr), Jack Flag (one of Captain America's sidekicks from the 90's), Star Lord, Gamora, and Bug!!
Bug stayed a loyal and dedicated member of the team until the end of the first Guardians comic run, which led to the team being rebooted to match the movies closer, with the only members being Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot and Iron Man (for some reason). As far as I have read, that is the last time Bug has been featured on the team.
Not only was Bug a cool looking, fun character on the team, he had been there pretty much since the start. I would really love to see him in the MCU one day, but Marvel has had issues with the licensing of the character (he's owned by Hasbro), so we might not get to see him anytime soon. I would really love to see him make a return in the comics though!!

Nothing can sum up Keith Giffen’s character better than the Facebook post he wrote to announce his own death at the age of 70: “I told them I was sick … Anything not to go to New York Comic Con. Thanx. Keith Giffen 1952-2023. Bwah ha ha ha ha.”
That eruption of maniacal merriment was recognised by comic fans as a last defiant laugh from the sardonic comic writer and artist, who has died of complications following a stroke, after a 50-year career during which he created many memorable characters including Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle), Rocket Raccoon, Ambush Bug and Lobo.
A Mexican-American teenager, Reyes first appeared in Infinite Crisis #3 (2006) and became Blue Beetle two issues later, when he gained superhuman powers via a scarab that morphs into an alien battle suit, eventually going on to appear in the 2023 Blue Beetle movie.
One of the stars of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was created by Giffen early in his artistic career. Rocket Raccoon was a smart-mouthed anthropomorphic weapons expert who first appeared in Marvel Preview #7 (1976), written by Bill Mantlo, who resurrected the character in his own four-part miniseries in 1985.
Among Giffen’s other early creations, Ambush Bug’s debut in DC Comics Presents #52 (1982) and its sequel, which involved the Legion of Substitute Heroes, were so successful that they led to several miniseries and one-shots drawn by Giffen featuring the absurd, fancifully dressed alien wannabe hero, and a one-shot Legion of Substitute Heroes Special (1985).
In 1982 Giffen joined the writer Paul Levitz on The Legion of Super-Heroes #287 and began transforming the series into a saga of considerable depth. One of the most popular storylines in comic book history, The Great Darkness Saga (#290-294, 1982), featured Darkseid as its cosmic villain and Legionnaires and other heroes from across time teaming up to confront him. As a result, Legion of Super-Heroes became one of DC’s bestsellers of the early 1980s.
Lobo, who first appeared in Omega Men #3 (1983), was intended as a parody of violent characters such as Wolverine, but became a poster boy for violence when Giffen teamed up with the writer Alan Grant and artist Simon Bisley for Lobo: The Last Czarnian (1990), which spawned numerous miniseries and specials in which Giffen continually pushed the envelope of acceptability as Lobo battled everyone from Santa Claus to his own children. Combat Christ and the Howlin’ Apostles proved to be DC’s limit.
Giffen was heavily involved in numerous crossover event series, designed, he said, to “significantly alter the status quo or introduce new characters into the status quo”, including Invasion! (1988), the weekly 52 (2006-07) and Countdown to Final Crisis (2007-08) for DC, and Annihilation (2006-07) from Marvel. His creativity and tongue-in-cheek humour earned him a loyal fanbase and he won an Inkpot award in 1991.
The son of Rosa Ann (nee Duncan) and James, a salesman for a textile company, Giffen was born in Queens, New York, but grew up in Little Falls, New Jersey. He was a fan of comics from the age of eight, when his mother handed him a copy of World’s Finest, and especially loved Marvel’s monster books and Gene Colan’s Giant-Man. He began creating his own characters at high school and went on to spend “one abysmal year” at the School of Visual Arts in New York (“the less said about that, the better”).
Apart from a year of night classes at duCret School of Art, New Jersey, Giffen was self-taught, studying books on anatomy and perspective during his four years working as a hazardous materials handler at Hoffmann-La Roche pharmaceuticals. During a week’s holiday he decided to submit samples to comic companies. At Marvel, an artist had dropped out of illustrating a back-up story (The Sword and the Star) for Marvel Preview, and Mantlo, who had spotted Giffen’s portfolio, suggested they give him a try.
Giffen briefly produced layouts for Wally Wood on Justice Society of America for DC’s All Star Comics (1976), but was let go. After a period of selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door and other odd jobs, he tried again, drawing horror stories and Doctor Fate as a back-up strip in The Flash (1982), and working his way up to the Legion of Super-Heroes.
An accusation of “swiping” the work of José Muñoz in Ambush Bug (1985) – Giffen said he “parroted” it, rather than doing an outright copy – derailed his career for a time, until he was offered the chance to plot, and do breakdowns for, Justice League (1987-92) and its spinoff, Justice League Europe (1989-92), working with JM DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire. He also plotted and did breakdowns for Aquaman (1989) and plots for L.E.G.I.O.N. ’89/’90 (1989-90), a superhero group spun off from Invasion.
The range of Giffen’s output over the next 30 years was astonishing. He drew the superhero parodies The Heckler (1992-93) and Punx (1995-96), the return of Justice League International in Justice League: Generation Lost (2010), and episodes of Outsiders (2011), O.M.A.C. (2011-12) and Infinity Man and the Forever People (2014-15). He plotted or wrote full scripts for Eclipso (1992-93), Vext (1999), Suicide Squad (2001-02), a biography of HP Lovecraft (2004), Blue Beetle (2006-07), Midnighter (2007-08), Wetworks (2007-08), Reign in Hell (2008-09), Doom Patrol (2009-11), Booster Gold (2009-11), Magog (2009-10), Justice League 3000 (2014-15) and The New 52: Futures End (2014-15), all for DC; and for Marvel he wrote stories featuring Marvel Monsters: Where Monsters Dwell (2005), Drax the Destroyer (2005-06), Defenders (2005-06), Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos (2005-06) and Annihilation spin-offs Annihilation: Silver Surfer (2006) and Annihilation: Conquest – Starlord (2007).
During the same period he also penned or plotted various comics for Image (1993-94) and Valiant (1994-96), adaptations of Japanese manga, Battle Royale (2003-06) and Battle Vixens (2004-10), for Tokyopop and 10 (2005), Hero Squared (2005-07), Planetary Brigade (2006-07) and others for BOOM! Studios. He was also a storyboard artist for the animated shows Batman Beyond and Static Shock, as well as writing episodes of Ed, Edd n Eddy and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi for Cartoon Network.
In early 2023 he produced a podcast titled I’m Not Dead Yet, and had recently moved to Tampa in Florida.
He is survived by his children, Kyle and Melinda. His wife, Anna, predeceased him.

Hi. I'm James. I worked for Pixar. I was not an animator. I am posting a Chapter from my upcoming book called "The Fall"
Have a read if you like.
Tumblr media
Chapter 3: A galaxy, far far away
10 years old. San Francisco. A flickering screen pulsates with the now-iconic blue letters: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."  This wasn't just a movie; it was a portal. Twenty-one Fridays in a row, I found myself transported to that galaxy, mesmerized by the dazzling visuals, the thrilling adventure, and the timeless story.  Star Wars ignited a spark in me – a burning desire to create worlds, weave stories, and make audiences feel the magic of cinema.
Fast forward two decades.  I found myself in a different kind of wonderland – the Palo Alto Apple Store. The year was 2004, and I was a Mac Genius, a frontline soldier in the Apple revolution. Apple Retail was just beginning and the energy was electric, the technology cutting-edge.  Little did I know, my path would take an unexpected turn, one with echoes of that childhood dream ignited by a galaxy far, far away.
Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple, was a frequent visitor to our store. Steve, and the head of Apple's Retail division, Ron Johnson, would stop by the store and make their way over to the Genius Bar every couple of weeks. Steve was incredibly intelligent and let me say that again, Steve was incredibly intelligent, and straightforward, and he had this way of looking through you and biting at you. If he asked one of us a question, which he often did, each one of us knew that the answer given had better be correct, concise, and articulate. In retrospect, I now know that Steve already knew the answer to the questions he asked. He wanted to see if we had the requisite knowledge to stand behind that Genius Bar. He wanted people that were not full of shit. We were the public face of Apple's Retail business and his passion for design, innovation, and creating delightful customer experiences was of the utmost importance. It was all that mattered. The slogan at Apple was surprise and delight, which was far beyond just going above and beyond. Steve wanted to return to retail and Mac Geniuses were the primary vehicles he used to achieve that aim.
His passion for the Apple Retail division reminded me of the spirit I witnessed onscreen in Star Wars.
Working at Apple was an incredible experience, but the pull of that childhood dream remained strong.
Then, in 2006, fate intervened.  One of my customers, Erik Foreman, the Mac OS X team manager at Pixar, noticed my technical expertise and perhaps even a hint of that Star Wars-fueled passion in my eyes.  He saw potential and offered me an interview – not as a filmmaker (yet!), but as a Mac OS X Systems Administrator at Pixar Animation Studios. I accepted, and after three months of interviewing at Pixar, I was chosen.
Pixar, I soon discovered, had its connection to the galaxy far, far away.  Founded by John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, the studio emerged from Lucasfilm, the very birthplace of Star Wars.  It was a full-circle moment, a chance to be part of the creative legacy that had so inspired me as a child.
Walking through the doors of Pixar on my first day of employment, was like stepping onto a movie set, except the sets were real, alive with creativity and a playful spirit.  While I wasn't directly involved in animation, my role was crucial.  Maintaining the Mac OS X desktops, laptops, and servers ensured a smooth workflow for the talented artists, animators, and storytellers who brought these incredible worlds to life. I was still helping to build a galaxy, albeit a digital one.
Every day at Pixar was a reminder of the power of imagination and the pursuit of a dream.  It was also a masterclass in storytelling.  Witnessing the meticulous detail, the collaborative spirit, and the unwavering dedication to excellence that went into each frame was an education in itself.
Being at Pixar wasn't just a job; it was a return to that childhood spark, a chance to be a part of the magic I had witnessed on screen years ago. The next chapter will explore how the lessons learned at Pixar, coupled with the practice of mindfulness, empowered me to take the next step on my creative journey, and eventually my demise.
End of Chapter 3

THINGS TO KNOW
Unlike DC, Marvel doesn't reset their timeline, they scale it. The Avengers you see in 1963 are the exact same Avengers you see in 2024, but every so often events are pushed around to keep the characters modern.
There's a few major events/storylines that shake up the status quo both in and out of universe
Kree-Skrull War (1971) Secret Wars (1984-1985) Infinity Trilogy (1991-1993) Introduction of Marvel 2099 (1992) MC2 (1998) Introduction of Ultimate Marvel (2000) House of M (2005) Civil War (2006) Secret Invasion (2008) Fear Itself (2011) Avengers v. X-Men (2012) Age of Ultron (2013) Secret Wars (2015) Civil War II (2016)
---
INTRODUCTIONS These cover the origins for many of Marvel's big dogs. They're just fantastic introductions to various teams and characters, as well as the general feel for the world.
Mythos Six issues that serve as introductions to The Fantastic Four, X-Men, Hulk, Captain America, Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man.
MARVELS 4 Issues chronicling Marvel's history, from their 'Golden Age' to the 90's.
Avengers Origins Five issues that serve as introductions to The Vision, Thor, Luke Cage, Ant-Man & The Wasp, and Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver
---
STATUS QUO Now that you're familiar with the big shots, here's some stuff you can jump into. Don't be afraid to skip as many issues as you'd like. Hell, skip years at a time if you wish.
Fantastic Four (1961)
Uncanny X-Men (1963)
Avengers (1963)
Daredevil (1964)
New Mutants (1983)
The Sensational She-Hulk by John Byrne (1984)
Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith (1993)
Alias By Brian Michael Bendis (2001)
She-Hulk (2004)
New Avengers (2004)
She-Hulk (2005)
House of M
Age of Ultron
Astonishing X-Men
Fantastic Four by Waid and Wieringo
Hickman's Fantastic Four
Uncanny Avengers (2012)
Ms. Marvel (2014)
Spider-Woman (2020)
Wasp (2023)
These are just all the guys I like off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm forgetting even a lot of my darlings. I'm also very much a Marvel noob, so try looking up omnibuses for characters/teams you're interested in or just can't get enough of. Half of my faves I locked in on because of something I learned in passing dialogue, or just cause I liked their costume.
---
OTHER These guys are off-shoots of 616 and best enjoyed after you've got a solid grasp on the world/universe
MC2 Marvel Comics 2 was a series of comics in the 90s that take place in an alternate future of the Marvel Universe
Spider-Man 2099 (1992)
Spider-Girl (1998)
Old Man Logan
What-Ifs (Literally just look up Marvel What Ifs and read whatever)
The 'The End' Series Kinda the opposite of Mythos, gives various endings to different characters/teams. Pretty wild at times
Spider-Man Noir (2009)
---
A few names I never really called out but ought to put out there Carol Danvers, Hank Pym, The Defenders, Doctor Strange, The Illuminati, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Patsy Walker, Venom, and SHIELD. Also Deadpool's fun!

Apparently I’ve been on A03 nearly 17 years now, with only one year in there where I didn’t post at least a chapter of a fic. My A03 account currently has 986,328 hits overall. I wonder if I can get to a million hits before the end of the year? Wild. In celebration, here is a list of fic with the most hits in each year I’ve posted to AO3:
2006 -
five ways Sam Carter got pregnant (SG-1, Sam/Various, cw: non-con)
2007 -
Egeria’s Legacy (SG-1, Sam/Jack) Tok'ra trouble is brewing and Sam gets caught in the middle.
2008 -
String Theory (SG-1, Sam/Jack) Dr. Samantha Carter joins the SGC and discovers a life she never expected.
2009 -
The Raggedy Edge (SG-1/Firefly, Sam/Jack, Daniel/Vala, Malcolm/Inara, Kaylee/Simon) During a rescue mission gone awry, Sam and Jack end up stranded in another galaxy where they find themselves passengers on a ship called Serenity.
2010 -
Compliance (SG-1, Sam/Jack) Carter has always been good at following orders.
2011 -
we build then we break (and build up again) (SG-1, Sam/Jack) Sam’s last mission on SG-1, and the life that follows.
2012 -
No fics!
2013 -
Entropy (CSI, Gil Grisom/Sara Sidle) They've been here before. "Forget Me Not" Post-Ep.
2014 -
Reparations (Leverage, Maggie Collins, Maggie&Sophie) Maggie sees the world differently now.
2015 -
Life is What Happens (Harry Potter, Harry/Ginny) It's their life, and they'll do what works for them. It's not like they've ever particularly cared about rules.
2016 -
Hard Day’s Night (SG-1, Jack-centric, Sam/Jack, cw: domestic terrorism) Jack always knew that desk was going to be the death of him, just not quite so literally. When Homeworld Security comes under attack, Jack discovers he hasn’t lost his edge, or his team. Set post-Continuum.
2017 -
The Changeling (Harry Potter, Ginny-centric, Harry/Ginny) Ginny is sorted into Slytherin. It takes her seven years to figure out why.
2018 -
we can’t control (watch me unfold) (Harry Potter, Harry/Ginny) It’s a simple arrangement. Between her grueling quidditch schedule and his mysterious auror duties, Ginny and Harry find time to have spectacular sex with no strings attached. It’s incredibly uncomplicated. Except when it isn’t.
2019 -
lips long parching (Harry Potter, Harry/Ginny) Going solo to her ex’s wedding is not exactly Ginny’s idea of a good time, but thanks to a smuggled flask and a rather sullen Harry Potter, it’s about to get a lot more interesting.
2020 -
in my head we do everything right (Harry Potter, Harry/Ginny) It’s not as easy as it sounds, going from hypotheticals to reality. Harry and Ginny navigate life after Hogwarts. Third in the Armistice Series.
2021 -
my kingdom come undone (The Untamed/CQL, LWJ/WWX) --if I am doomed to death, then at least I could be killed by you-- Wei Ying has lost control and there is only one person who can stop him. It's Lan Wangji’s greatest fear unfurling right in front of him.
2022 -
break upon your shore (The Untamed/CQL, LWJ/WWX) Wei Ying’s attention has chased Lan Wangji since the first day they met—relentless, unforgiving, his eyes always looking. One day Lan Wangji can’t help but look back. (WIP)

germany 2006 is the first world cup that i can remember. argentina's kit was 100% magic. shakira and hips don't lie. it is a world cup that i associate with the color white. the absolute wonder goal of maxi rodriguez against mexico. painting our faces and watching the games at school. messi had long hair.
south africa 2010 is the first world cup that made me fall in love with the world cups. think about it already from the previous months. work at school on the different countries that participated. waka waka. maradona was our coach. maradona and messi working together. messi learning to take free kicks with maradona by his side. maradona's statements to the press. beat mexico again and lose in the quarterfinals against germany. my dad celebrating the goal from martín palermo to greece.
brazil 2014 is the world cup of the stomach aches and almost happiness. messi already was the best player in the planet. the proximity made us believe that the world cup was played almost at home. i remember every argentinian goal and every argentinian player. i watched all the matches at home and in my room alone because that's how i watched the first one and i wasn't going to change it. my gradma was still alive. the 7 goals from germany to brazil. alejandro sabella. the penalties against the netherlands where i had to take a deep breath because i was going to have a heart attack. reach a world final after 28 years. lose the final against germany. feel it unfair. feel that we are never given happiness. the depression of a country. the sadness of a country. defeat.
russia 2018 is the world cup of anger and disgust. i already lived in another city alone and i was already studying at the university. knowing that we have a bad team and a bad coach. sampaoli the antichrist. knowing that they were all in bad terms with eachother. louis tweeting. time zone changes. the match against france that i chose not remember because i chose to forgot this world cup. it was the worse.
but every four years we all got a new opportunity. millions of people around the planet watching the most wonderful game created by any civilization that has existed, exits and will exist in the entire galaxy.
our first world cup without diego.
my first world cup without my dad.

Ando was a swampy world in the Mid Rim, home to the Aqualish species. The misty world’s surface was covered in saltwater oceans, with marshy islands breaking up the waters. Ando’s first contact with the greater galaxy came after the Aqualish slaughtered a human exploration team, stole their ship, and flew to a nearby world, leaving destruction in their wake.

[ Another Time Another Place A Hollow Universe In Space ]
The galaxy finally knew his name.
Peter Jason Quill had become the legendary Star-Lord, Captain of the Guardians of the Galaxy. They had saved it not once but twice, earning the respect and admiration of entire societies across the cosmos.
That was why it was important they never knew about the way he was screaming now, lest said respect and admiration was replaced by mockery. Like a child being chased by Abilisks, Quill was screaming his lungs out as he tried to save his team and his ship during a particularly difficult, unexpected landing. If they made it out alive, he would ask Mantis to make the others forget about the noises that escaped him. Though to be fair, they were all screaming. The Benatar slowed down; their screams died down. The Zune was still playing songs as if nothing ever happened, and Quill was amazed by its inability to give a fuck.
“Well, that was smooth.” Rocket’s voice rose from his seat.
“Guys?” Quill asked with a voice that was too high-pitched for an adult, shaky with panic. “Is everyone okay?”
A chorus of confused, affirmative answers erupted around him. Groot nodded – then puked. As the Guardians undid their seatbelt, Quill stood up first.
“Let’s do it again!” Drax broke into laughter, slapping his thighs. “Tell me we can do that again!”
“No, thank you,” Mantis replied.
“Drax, you’re fuckin’ crazy, aren’t ya?” Rocket said.
“There is no way we’re doing that again,” Gamora added.
“I am Groot!” complained Groot.
Quill silently nodded and closed his eyes as they bantered; it was like getting confirmation that his team was okay, and relief made his voice go back to normal when he finally asked the important questions:
“Did you, uh… Did you guys hear me scream, or…?”
“No, Quill. We were too busy thinkin’ we were gonna bite it,” Rocket said.
A sudden knock earned a collective exclamation of surprise among the crew, and they dashed across the corridors of the Benatar as Quill gripped his blasters, Drax his knives, Gamora her switchblade and Rocket aimed his gun. Mantis wanted to protest, say that maybe the citizens of the planet were friendly, maybe they were simply knocking to welcome the Guardians. But she knew, like the others, that they had a young child aboard, so she picked up Groot and held him protectively. Then, Quill slammed a fist against the controls to open up the doors…
(Yeah, you had a good idea and I think it’d be fun to develop it, though I’ll go with multiverse stuff. If they can keep their canon backstories then it’ll be easier for me to understand their context. Since FFXII characters can end up in the MCU, it could also be the other way around. I named this verse after some lyrics that seemed fitting, but feel free to change it if you want! Apologies in advance if I derp anything too hard!)
__________
{ Yeah, I think that’s the best option if you aren’t familiar with the game and want to make it easy on yourself. I’m placing the Guardians in the most hospitable time to start out, before the events of the game and even the prologue. So... King Raminas (Ashe’s dad) is still alive, Basch hasn’t yet been framed for his assassination, and Rabanastre (capital city of Dalmasca) hasn’t been attacked/occupied by Archadia. The reason I put them there is because Rabanastre is a racial, ethnic, and cultural melting pot, so I figured that would be the most interesting for them. Archadia is far less diverse, it’s mostly humans. And they wouldn’t be as forgiving of a random ship coming into their airspace, heh. So... we can eventually make drama happen, but I figured for now, let’s plop them somewhere fairly hospitable (they’re still going to be wary and confused, heh, but at least they won’t shoot them out of the sky) and let them get used to the world first before we add any drama.
Also, don’t worry about messing things up! I can either fix it or run with it, it’s not a problem, heh. I’ve been a fan of this game since 2006, I’ve beat it start to finish three times, and I just watched a 6.5-hour movie of all cutscenes and important shit... and I am STILL messing things up. For some reason, I cannot get the events of the prologue and those at the beginning of the main game straight. I keep thinking King Raminas (Ashe’s dad) was assassinated in the palace on the night of the fete when Archadia attacked Rabanastre, but nope, that happened two years earlier, and in Nalbina Fortress while he was there for a treaty-signing on the border of Dalmasca and Nabradia. I have said so many times he was assassinated in the Royal Palace of Rabanastre and I don’t know why I can’t get it through my thick skull that he was not, lol. I also mix up Gabranth’s last two important scenes, at the Pharos and then later on the Bahamut. To me, those two important conversations will forever blend together in my head and I keep quoting them at the wrong times, and I just... *rubs temples* How many more years do I have to be a fan of this game before I get it right?! XD So don’t worry about it, it’s a very detailed and confusing game at times, so you’re fine, I’m messing things up too, lol. }
Although the city of Rabanastre was prospering, the ever-present shadow of war loomed over all of Ivalice. While Nabradia had seemingly thrown in their lot with the Rozarrian Empire in dangerous opposition to the Archadian Empire, King Raminas of Dalmasca had been adamant about remaining politically neutral. He wanted no part in Archadia’s brutal expansion, nor Rozarria’s recruitment of smaller, previously-neutral nations in order to gain access to their territory and airspace.
Solidarity with Dalmasca’s sister kingdom of Nabradia on the battlefront was not an endorsement for the Rozarrian Empire, the king asserted, but would Archadia see it the same way? Should a war be waged between the two powerful empires, it would be the smaller kingdoms that would suffer most, their skies and land becoming the stage upon which the two behemoth political entities would play out their battle for dominance of Ivalice. While Basch understood his king’s distaste and apprehension, and agreed with it, he worried how much longer Dalmasca would be able to avoid choosing a side in the conflict.
With Nabradia’s not-so-clandestine alliance with Rozarria and Prince Rasler’s approaching wedding to Princess Ashe, tensions, worries, and fears ran high. Would either empire use the marriage as an excuse to escalate what was already bubbling beneath the surface? These worries were stoked, and pointedly so, by reports of an unidentified aircraft in Dalmascan airspace. it had appeared in the skies above Rabanastre, and all attempts to make radio contact had been either unsuccessful... or ignored. As he made his way to where the ship had forcibly docked at a restricted skyport with neither safety clearance nor permission to do so, Basch listened to the concerns of his royal guardsmen.
The ship was... strange. They had no idea what make or model it might be, and what was even more concerning than that, was the fact that it flew no colors or banners. By all accounts, it was either not affiliated with any political entity, or it was attempting to conceal said affiliation. Basch made haste to the dock, taking a company of guards with him. He hoped this was merely a misunderstanding, but if it was not... if it was something more nefarious... he had to be ready. The king was alerted and, as always, well-guarded, and so Basch sought to make sense of the situation Hopefully peacefully so.
When the travelers made no attempt to exit their ship, Basch took it upon himself to step out onto the gangway and... knock on what appeared to be its entrance. His other hand rested on the hilt of his sword, ready for anything. When finally the door did open, Basch was confused by what he saw. What technology was this? Never had he seen such a ship before. He was curious, but duty came first.
Tumblr media
“I am Captain Basch fon Ronsenburg, Knight of Dalmasca. You have arrived at the Royal City of Rabanastre without prior notification at a dock reserved solely for palace traffic. Please state your identity and purpose here. What land do you hail from?”
His tone was authoritative but also fairly polite. He had no reason, as of yet, to think this was anything other than a misunderstanding or perhaps something done out of desperation. If the ship was damaged, their radios down, then that might explain the lack of communication prior to docking. He kept an open mind, but was also prepared to take action if these people were here to threaten his king and princess...

NASA’s JWST probes an extreme starburst galaxy  - Technology Org

NASA’s JWST probes an extreme starburst galaxy  - Technology Org
An international team of astronomers has used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to produce the highest-resolution image of spectacular exploding stars ever seen. The Messier 82 (M82) galaxy, located 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major, is relatively compact in size but hosts a frenzy of star formation activity and is sprouting new stars 10 times faster than the Milky Way galaxy.
On the left is the starburst galaxy M82 as observed by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 2006. The small box at the galaxy’s core corresponds to the area captured so far by the NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) instrument on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. The red filaments as seen by Webb are the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission, which traces the shape of the galactic wind. In the Hubble image, light at .814 microns is coloured red, .658 microns is red-orange, .555 microns is green, and .435 microns is blue (filters F814W, F658N, F555W, and F435W, respectively). In the Webb image, light at 3.35 microns is coloured red, 2.50 microns is green, and 1.64 microns is blue (filters F335M, F250M, and F164N, respectively). Image Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, A. Bolatto (University of Maryland)
Dr Deanne Fisher from Swinburne University of Technology’s Centre of Astrophysics and Supercomputing led the Australian team, directing the JWST’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) instrument toward the centre of the so-called ‘starburst galaxy’ to obtain a closer look at the conditions that foster the formation of new stars.
This revealed that the physics involved is very similar to what shapes clouds in our sky, or waves in the water.
“The James Webb Space Telescope really opens a new window to studying the gas in galactic winds. We can now see the tiny building blocks of the wind,” Dr Fisher says.
Star formation continues to maintain a sense of mystery because it is shrouded by curtains of dust and gas, creating an obstacle in observing this process. Fortunately, the JWST’s ability to peer in the infrared is an asset in navigating these murky conditions.
The JWST’s NIRCam instrument was well-suited to trace the structure of the galactic wind via emission from sooty chemical molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are like very small dust grains that survive in cooler temperatures but are destroyed in hot conditions.
Much to the team’s surprise, the JWST’s view of the PAH emission highlights the galactic wind’s previously unknown fine structure. Depicted as red filaments, the emission extends away from the central region where the heart of star formation is located. Another unanticipated find was the similar structure between the PAH emission and that of hot, ionised gas.
“The PAH emission is an exciting new tool,” explains Dr Fisher. “PAHs are very fragile. You would expect that when supernovae expose the hot inner material from stars, they would obliterate the colder gas.”
“The fact that the PAHs seem to survive out into the wind is a real challenge to theory. It means there is extra physics that we need to understand. We think that similar physics that shapes clouds in the sky, or waves in water, may be important in these extreme environments of galactic winds.”
Finding structure in lively conditions
Looking at M82 in slightly longer infrared wavelengths, clumpy tendrils represented in red can be seen extending above and below the galaxy’s plane. These gaseous streamers are a galactic wind rushing out from the core of the starburst.
One area of focus was understanding how this galactic wind, which is caused by the rapid rate of star formation and subsequent supernovae, is launching and influencing its surrounding environment. By resolving a central section of M82, scientists could examine where the wind originates and gain insight on how hot and cold components interact within the wind.
A vibrant community of stars
NIRCam images of the very centre of the starburst used an instrument mode that prevented the very bright source from overwhelming the detector.
While dark brown tendrils of heavy dust are threaded throughout M82’s glowing white core even in this infrared view, the JWST’s NIRCam has revealed a level of detail that has historically been obscured. Looking closer toward the centre, small specks depicted in green denote concentrated areas of iron, most of which are supernova remnants. Small patches that appear red signify regions where molecular hydrogen is lit up by a nearby young star’s radiation.
Lighting a path forward
The JWST’s observations of M82 in near-infrared light spur further questions about star formation, some of which the team hopes to answer with additional data gathered with the JWST, including that of another starburst galaxy. Two other papers from this team characterising the stellar clusters and correlations among wind components of M82 are almost finalised.
In the near future, the team will have spectroscopic observations of M82 from the JWST ready for their analysis, as well as complementary large-scale images of the galaxy and wind. Spectral data will help astronomers determine accurate ages for the star clusters and provide a sense of timing for how long each phase of star formation lasts in a starburst galaxy environment. On a broader scale, inspecting the activity in galaxies like M82 can deepen astronomers’ understanding of the early universe.
These findings have been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.

Shattered Hero ~ Origins of the Ink Demon : Episode Maka Finale (3/11)
[Halberd Interior]
*Sonic Sfx : Chaos Control*
Maka : Alright, sister. We finally made it back, but where we are? Huh? This is...Meta Knight's ship.
Moirai : We don't know how we got here.
Grim (Metal Sonic) : At last. I'm finally back where I was, inside this metallic body of mine. So it seems, Sonic manages to save the princess from Eggman's clutches again, but eventually, Star Fox team went on the case to rescue Sonic and Elise from the Falling Egg Carrier that might be the cause of Mephiles' manipulation, or perhaps the Solaris Incident is effecting 2006 even more than it was.
Moirai : When it comes to Apparoids, they make me sick.
??? : So, you must be Maka Albarn, A so-called hero of Soul World that existed within the Real World, how noble that you managed to stay alive by being the most overdeveloped person on the planet.
[Endrum Collective - Hideaki Kobayashi]
Grim (Metal Sonic) : Who are you? Are you Leo Grahart from PSO?
Magashi : Allow me to introduce you to myself. I am Renvolt Magashi of the Endrum Collective.
"RENVOLT MAGASHI : LEADER OF THE ENDRUM COLLECTIVE."
Magashi : I am not from the place that you call it PSO. We are from the Gurhal System, a place inhabited by humans and their creations...Casts--Newman--Beasts. And least not forget, 500 years ago, Gurhal had a war among the four races in a never ending conflict. So after peace lasted about 100 years, darkness has begun to awakened and shattered Gurhal's peace.
Maka : Hey, wait a sec. Gurahl...Four races...500 year-old war. You're from PSU!
Magashi : (chuckles) Correct. PSU, the successor to PSO. And I believe it's stands for...
Maka : "Pennsylvania State Universe?"
Moirai : Portalnd State Univerity or PSU stands for...
Grim (Metal Sonic) : No...PSU stands for "Power Supply Unit", but it also stands for "Phantasy Star Universe."
Magashi : You catch on quickly. PSU does stands for Phantasy Star Universe.
Grim (Metal Sonic) : Another Sega Representative from another Sonic Team title. PSU was released before the worst game made for sonic was ever released into the atmosphere.
Magashi : So let me guess this. 2006 might been an awful year for the blue blur himself. Ever since the last server for PSO was shutdown by the officials, the original PSO remained in it's private servers after the last episode of PSO, NPCs or the group called the Good guys have been retired their selves as heroes and peace to Ragol has been restored. And now, when 2006 came, I Renvolt Magashi finally made my appearance as the newest villain to the Phantasy Star title. A new Dark Falz that has awakened himself to bring out threats to Real World Au and devastation to the planets. We call these organic things that we call it SEED, spread by PSU's own Dark Falz himself, Codename : Dulk Fakis. A creature that will swallow Gurhal and it's galaxy whole by the darkness itself.
Grim (Metal Sonic) : A star system and a galaxy swallowed by the darkness? I know who that might be. Two people that are villainous psychopaths of Gurhal, Karl F. Howzer and Helga Noimann. (Gary meows) Whoops. I mean " Helga Neumann". Two villainous psychopaths that are humans of Gurhal who wanted to swallow Gurhal and it's planets whole to the Darkness so that they can get away with murder. without, Gurhal, or without the three planets, Phantasy Star Universe will never be the same, before Portable.
Maka : That's crazy! Two human beings that are genocidal sociopaths that wanted to bring an attempt of genocide or omnicide on the planets! That's murder!
Magashi : (laughs evilly) What did you expect, girl? Although that the truth lies within you has seems to be struggling with you. There is no Madness in the Ohkuboverse neither a being you call it a Kishin. Although the Lying of Shinra Kusakabe hurts even more often to you than the truth itself . The purpose of defeating a god has nothing to do with courage, the one gift that you brought from other heroes like Kirby or Shinra Kusakabe. I let you and Nights to use that kind of courage so that the true powers of Darkness should never suspect Demon Vibe's real intentions on taking over this pathetic galaxy, or destroying the rest of the planets that turns this galaxy into a gigantic piles of space dust!
*DBZ SFX : Energy Warbling*
*GLITCHING*
Maka Albarn : (yells in pain) GAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!! MY HEAD! IT HURTS! What the hell have I been fighting for!?! This is all Kirby's fault or Shinra's! I am so confused! I'm so frustrated!
Grim (Metal Sonic) : Dishonor! She let her guard with confusion!
Magashi : Bwahahaha! That's the Maka I know wanted to hear from a cowardly girl like you and now I will make you disappear so you'll never protect the devil's legacy and spreading the lying to thy self! DIE NOW, SPAWN OF DEVIL!
(CLANG!)
??? : You won't be easily that much to pick someone your own size!
[Save this World - Kelli Sae, Hideaki Kobayashi]
Moirai : Huh? Who is that?
??? : Magashi! I won't let you cower her with fear and confusion, this time I'll stop you for good!
Magashi : Why I don't believe it! It's...(the person unhoods to reveal himself as Ethan Waber) Ethan Waber!
Ethan : That's right. I'm the guy that is kicking your ass! Now stand back and I may stop you! Haaaaa!
Magashi : You're still the same Ethan that I expected! (the two starts clashing) Is that the best you can do!?
Ethan Waber : It's much worth saving the galaxy more than saving the world. You're in a for a hero's welcome! Ha!
Magashi : Clever Ethan! You profound yourself on saving the galaxy, more than saving the world. But it will be the last to the planet covered in darkness. Whether will it be Dark Nebula or Dulk Fakis that is going to rule the entire galaxy!
Karen : You okay there, young ma'am?
Maka : Who are you?
Karen Erra : I'm Karen Erra and I'm with Ethan Waber, the man who is my trainee! And that is the reason that I'm putting a stop to Magashi's recklessness.
Maka : I thought Ethan was just a kid who works alone.
Karen Erra : Not just him. Us as well.
Hyuga : Same goes to me.
Maya : I'm with Ethan's side.
Lou : Just keep your feet on the ground
Leo : Don't get too carried away!
Tonnio : Or we'll make you stay away!
Alfort Tylor : Heh! He never cease to Amaze me.
Magashi : Just as I expected, the Guardians! But I'm tired fighting a bunch of heroes like you all the time. Don't expect Howzer and Helga ever to come destroying the likes of you all, and especially you, Ethan.
Ethan : You'd wish.
Magashi : Heh. It doesn't matter. I'm going to postpone our fight to the SEED Hive, you'll just be part of the demise when Dulk Falkis or Dark Nebula covers the planet in darkness! Farewell, Ethan Waber! (throws Smoke bomb) *BOOM!*
(everyone coughs out)
Ethan : Magashi! Darn it! He must've went off to the SEED Hive! We can't let that happen!
Maka Albarn : So you guys are PSU?
Ethan : Of course, we are PSU after all. I'm Ethan Waber, and these guys are the GUARDIANS. You must be the Grim Reaper of Mobius.
Grim (Metal Sonic) : Yes, I am Death God of Mobius, Grim. And I owe you and your comrades my gratitude for saving this girl's life.
Ethan : It's all in a days work. So much for the good guys that usually worked for PSO.
Grim (Metal Sonic) : This is Maka Albarn, a descendant to the Phantonian Race. Nobody would imagine that a girl with a deadly force within her heart and soul would bring all that destruction casued by her anger and sadness that combines frustration to trigger the shattered resonance.
Maya : Wow. A girl who wiped out 80% of Japan's population? What an interesting fact that a child like her would be the cause for the death and destruction of all humanity on Real World earth. Is there a reason why she was confused and frustrated over the reason for not being a hero to Soul World?
Grim (Metal Sonic) : About three years ago, when my units of the Hang Castle Security Force found out that a 70-year old demon queen was escaped from imprisonment, Maka was the only a child that nobody ever wanted and was the outcast by many in Japan, but a boy named Makoto was the only one who ever wanted her.
Hyuga : And so does the main crew of Soul World, what she friends with the main crew of Soul World?
Grim (Metal Sonic) : The only member of the Soul Eater crew was Soul Evans whom she first met in San Francisco, but he recently broken up with her when I ordered my men to capture and secure her in order to be hidden from the public eye. I guess she could say that her heart belongs to somewhere besides others, it could Makoto's or Soul's.
Moirai : [referring to her previous boyfriend] Humph, men! Always be the jerk of our kind! They should known about Gender Equalities by now. Now everyone knows that my sister is in a love triangle!
Grim (Metal Sonic) : We were on our way to stop Dark Nebula from ever covering the galaxy in everlasting darkness by reclaiming his title as Ruler of the Underworld. Where you people exactly headed to?
Ethan Waber : We're on way to save Gurhal and Real World AU from this that orginally came from. (shows a photo of the SEED Hive)
Moirai : Woah! What is that place? Could that be...
Grim (Metal Sonic) : The SEED Hive. That's where Renvolt Magashi was heading to.

Blog 6 : Interdisciplinary Group Project
 by Shamshan Chandrathodika
On January 24th, our interdisciplinary class began with a fun icebreaker game to start the second semester. Divided into groups, we participated in the 'egg game', a challenging task in which we devised a strategy to safeguard an egg from a fall using the items given. This activity promoted a sense of comfort among our group members and established a positive environment for our teamwork.

During the class, we were introduced to the concept of dome projection and charged with developing and carrying out a dome projection project with our teammates. We were given an overview of the operational and technical components of dome projection, which served as a basis for our following discussions and project planning.
The next day, our group met to develop three project ideas per member. After thorough reflection and fruitful communication, we collected our thoughts into three final ideas to present to our faculty members. Ultimately, we all agreed to pick out an idea combining our thoughts. We settled on a loop where the character's submarine or spacecraft shifts between locations with a blip.
Our learning experience continued, and we got introduced to Unreal Engine software, which gave us significant insights into developing 360-degree outputs and other technical issues essential to our project. The following week, we learned about Adobe After Effects and how to create visual effects for our projects.

Faculty members guided us in building and altering our project concept. We changed the blip, causing the shift between worlds. To clarify, we crafted a narrative where a submarine or vehicle travelling underwater collides with a large fish, causing damage. The glass breaks, and the screen blanks out. The atmosphere then transitions to outer space, interpreted as the afterlife. We all agreed on this as the final idea for the dome projection.
Roles were divided within our group, and each member contributed knowledge to different project elements. I was in charge of the galaxy sequence's 2D animation. At the same time, other team members worked on various roles, such as concept art and sound design by Camila, 3D animation of the environment by Abishek, character design by Anna, and vehicle design by Zaeem. Through extensive study and discussion and enabling a WhatsApp group where we could share our thoughts, we could fine-tune our contributions, which included essential references and graphics in our product.
In reflection, the collaborative experience with my group was compelling and rewarding. It helped me understand my skills and shortcomings in a team setting, emphasizing the significance of clear communication and teamwork. The mentoring of faculty members improved my knowledge of dome projection and exposed me to new software tools, broadening my skill set and boosting my creative possibilities. Overall, these classes helped to develop personal and collective growth within our project team.
