Why I like Kirk so much and why I think he didn’t resonate as much with general audiences as Spock did
I think what Gene Roddenberry and the rest of the tos crew underestimated is how powerful knowledge of a character can be when they thought Kirk would be popular over Spock. As season 1 progresses while you do get information about both Kirk and Spock peppered through out, how much and how it’s conveyed is important.
Spock is Stoic yes, but surprisingly he talks about his past and what it means to be Vulcan a lot. And other characters comment on Vulcans too like McCoy describing where a Vulcan heart is. Even moving onto season 2, when Spock truly, desperately, does not want to explain what Pon Farr is or that Sarek is his father, he admits these things under pressure. And all of this information is what’s gives the audience an idea of what informs his actions.
Jim Kirk however, despite being very outgoing and charismatic, very rarely talks about himself. With few exceptions, every time you do learn something about his past it’s because someone else explains it or points it out. You’ve got where no man has gone before where Gary talked about their academy days, The naked time while Spock talked about his regrets, Kirk vents that he wants a personal connection and then is literally the only person who is able to will the virus to stop effecting him (on his own I mean) just long enough for McCoy to give him the cure.
The Android copy of Kirk tells us about Kirk’s brother Sam, in Conscience of the king literally everyone except Kirk explains his tragic tarsus iv backstory, we never find out who the Ruth girl is in shore leave, and it’s Bones that brings up Sam lives on Deneva. Even in season 2 in the worst episode ever, the deadly years, when Kirk is in a room alone with his ex fiancé, she explains their history. Not Kirk.
This man is allergic to talking about himself I love it.
Edit: Whenever Jim does even sorta talk about his past, it’s always in the context of what the other people he’s talking to know about it. Take Tarsus IV. Spock tells Jim that he checked the same library records. So when Jim finally opens up at the end of the conversation, it’s information Spock and Bones already know. “I saw him [Kodos] once, 20 years ago.” Then about 10 minutes later when he’s talking with Kodos and trying to get proof, he gives Kodos a copy of the speech Jim heard him read 20 years ago. Saying that he memorized the words. Again, these are things only the two of them would know about. It’s not something Jim exclusively went through.
Then later in Obsession when Jim is talking about his prior experience with the fog, everything he references was in the report he made after the Farragut disaster that he knows Spock and Bones read. There is no new information he reveals about what happened to him or even how he felt about it. Bones has to be the one to say Jim was wrecked with guilt because at the end of the day, Jim will never willingly talk about his past without knowing or thinking the other person he’s talking to has the same information. He will not reveal anything new 95% of the time.
Anyway back to the old blog.
While I’d argue conscience of the king does most of the work you would ever need to explain why Kirk is the way he is, the fact is we don’t learn much about his past through him. Instead it’s Kirk’s actions that inform our understanding of him. Which on some level I like a lot. It’s rare that a tv series doesn’t lean heavily into some tragic backstory explaining why a character acts the way they do. But it isn’t just he doesn’t have multiple tragic backstories. It’s what we know nothing about his past in general. Ffs we didn’t learn he grew up in Iowa until Star Trek IV. It might not even be Riverside! That town just claimed it for themselves and everyone rolled with it.
Edit: SNW did confirm after almost 40 years that riverside is Kirk’s birthplace.
The audience never truly closes the gap with Kirk because he never willingly opens up (at least where I am in the show idk maybe the movies change this) So comparatively Spock just had more going on.

A Burning Tree
~ok listen! I know I said that the next part would introduce Revenant!Kung Lao, but I got the brainworm to look at how Liu Kang and Shujinko handled Kung Lao's death and add more Dark!Raiden to the mix. Especially since I was heavily inspired to write a bit more about Dark!Raiden thanks to @sogekii-heii and their recent piece with Dark!Raiden (I still think about that, like oml!)~
~So here we go again! I promise this time, Kung Lao's coming back and it's going to be nasty! Also, this title actually has meaning to it, finish reading to get that meaning! Or skip to the end and get it anyways, idc~
~Before we continue just wanted to put some mild context to ensure this makes sense. Fire God Liu Kang starts getting deja vu as certain coincidences and events start playing out that are too eerily similar to how things played out during the MK9 game. All roads were seemingly leading to Kung Lao dying in his timeline, and Liu Kang struggled with how to cope and deal with this. On one hand, he did not want his friend-…His new teacher…To die, especially since he tried so hard to tailor-make this timeline to ensure everyone got a happy ending.
Yet, at the same time, he refused to stoop down to Kronika's level and start altering the timeline until it was his "perfect" utopia. However, his fears and suspicion about the situation become even more realized when Raiden gets gravely injured, and the only thing that prevented him from kneeling over was the thunder amulet infused with his person (and some other magical shit, idk). From this, Raiden gains his iconic white hair, and this gives Liu Kang a heart attack. To make a long story short, Kung Lao ends up dying at the hands of the villains, Raiden is going through the stages of grief, but he's going down the same dark path as the previous Raiden, now becoming Dark Raiden. And Liu Kang has to finally interfere.~
Still confused? Too late, now on to the story!
Previous // Next
Characters: Shujinko (MK1 Ver), Fire God Liu Kang, Raiden, Past Liu Kang, Past Raiden - Mentions of Kung Lao, Scorpion, Smoke, and Ashra
Word Count: 5,578
Ships: MK9 Liu Kang/MK9 Raiden (Unrequited Love)
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence (with less blood), Heavy Talks of Character Death
No one has seen Liu Kang-not since he disbanded the Earthrealm Warriors. Barely a week after that disbandment, Liu Kang became a ghost in his own academy. None of the monks can confidently say where they last saw the fire god. One moment, he's confined to his meditation area, then he's at the zen garden, or his private quarters. Other times, no one knows where Liu Kang is at all.
Shujinko still remembers that day, when Liu Kang called all his champions to inform them of the news. Old and new Earthrealm warriors were gathered for the news, and it came as a shock to everyone what Liu Kang announced.
"I may have made a…Selfish choice, when I chose each of you to become defenders of Earthrealm. The timeline I originated from, many of you were there as well. Protecting and fighting for our home against threats within and outside of Earthrealm…And with this new era, I foolishly assumed that I could…Replicate the connections that were made before. I have taken up all of your time with new worries, wounds, and ripped you away from the lives you once had before. So…I'm giving you the option…To walk away. From all of this. To return to your homes, your families, the life before I found you. There will be no shame or dishonor if you choose to retire the mantle. I wish each of you a fulfilling life…And I'm sorry."
Shujinko still remembers the near unified gasp and murmurs that filled the room-the questions that erupted in that moment as everyone tried to make sense of Liu Kang's decision. Liu Kang answered any questions that were brought to him, but Shujinko could tell that Liu Kang was set on his decision. Despite Liu Kang's stance on the discontinuation of Earthrealms defenders, many opted to continue their service to their realm, especially when Kuai Liang, Tomas, and Ashra argued against Liu Kang's decision to weaken Earthrealms defenses. And where Liu Kang would've listened to their concerns carefully and worked with others to meet in the middle, the fire god did none of that, uncharacteristically so. It seemed no amount of concrete arguments was going to sway Liu Kang into reconsidering.
If anything, the zeal the Shirai Ryu leaders and Ashra displayed encouraged others to stay and maintain their positions as Earthrealms protectors. After all they've been through, how could one do so? Discovering mystical powers that they all thought to be mythical, experiencing breathtaking realms beyond their own, and for few, the soul-changing truth and reality of their existence. For others, they might not have a home to return to; a life either filled with too many hurtful memories, broken relationships, or homes gone to the wind to never return again. All of that is nigh impossible to walk away from…But walk away few did.
Their reasons for leaving were their own, and they left with their excuses. But there were those who couldn't return to a normal life due to the aforementioned reasons before. They knew too much, saw too much; for some, a bit too much. Like a soldier returning from a grueling war, reconciling an average living after spending years, months, maybe even weeks under the wing of Liu Kang and his academy would be much to bear on the psyche. Almost ominously, Liu Kang promised to fix that for them.
What was done to these warriors was not publicly told, but Shujinko heard rumors and whispers about Liu Kang wiping away the memories of those who couldn't find it in themselves to leave behind their new life to return to their old one. It's presumed it's a consensual exchange, and Shujinko wants to believe that Liu Kang gave them the choice to lose those memories. But there was something disheartening about knowing that old friends Shujinko knew during his time in the Wu Shi Academy now viewed him as a regular stranger. That there are those who returned home who will never recognize the faces of those whom they considered allies, friends, and maybe even lovers.
Shujinko would know that pain. He experienced it before.
-
Raiden, long before he was exposed to the same memory wipe...When he was...Changed by his former master's death, revealed to him why there were gaps and contradictions in his memories. At that time, Shujinko noticed a change that was present in everyone. People were avoiding him, few wanted to train with him, and others spoke to him in such a careful manner as if they were hiding something from the young pupil. Before, Kung Lao, Raiden, nor Liu Kang would explain why he was treated differently, chalking it up to his new classmates needing time to get to know him.
And for a long time, Shujinko believed that...Until Raiden broke the news to him. It practically came out of nowhere when Raiden revealed this to Shujinko. Shujinko's training was placed in the hands of the thunder wielder, and after Kung Lao's death, he was far rougher and blunt than before, pointing out all his flaws but giving little instruction on how to improve. Even Shujinko's ability to copy other's abilities couldn't prepare him how to fight properly. And, at times, Shujinko thought that Raiden used their time training together as an excuse to use him as a punching bag. None of the other masters at the academy was as ruthless as Raiden was, even the ones who were notorious for being a "tough love" type of mentor. Shujinko slowly began to dread training with Raiden...Feared him even. It was almost like Raiden had some...Sick, twisted desire to break his spirit, along with those he encountered.
It was the day when Shujinko practically BEGGED Raiden to stop his assault on him, clearly yielding, nay, submitting, to the thunder wielder. His glowing white hair and eyes, along with the sparks of lightning bouncing off him, becoming an image Shujinko, even to this day, has a hard time disassociating from his idea of what Raiden is. Raiden gave him a light but firm kick, forcing Shujinko on his back after leaning on his side. Raiden walked a short distance away from him, taking in the mountainous view of the academy. Shujinko took that moment to breathe since Raiden rarely gave him breaks anymore.
"...You've been slightly improving, Shujinko," Raiden kept his eyes trained on the scene before him, his voice tainted with a sinister tone.
Shujinko only moved his eyes to look at his master, remaining silent, for he feared that saying anything would rile the thunder wielder. Especially since the clouds have been a dangerous gray for a long time since they started their brawl.
"But you're barely where you need to be. Not like you used to be, anyways." Raiden gibed, still keeping his view on the mountainous regions ahead.
Shujinko KNOWS he shouldn't speak back, he learned a long time ago with this...New Raiden, what happens when he talks back to him. But something deep inside the young monk wanted to bite back at Raiden. After all this time under Raiden's wing, he's been nothing but demeaning to Shujinko. Everything the pupil did seemingly irritated Raiden to no end. If anything, the reason he's 'barely where he needs to be' is because Raiden beats him to near death and doesn't actually teach him! Not like he used to, at least!
Without thinking, Shujinko opened his mouth, venom escaping his lips as he responded to Raiden, "Maybe I would be getting better if you didn't constantly beat the 'lesson' out of me. You know, like how a true master would teach their student. Even Kung Lao knew that."
There was a threatening pause, a silence Shujinko didn't felt until he heard the frightening sound of thunder in the air. It wasn't until now that Shujinko realized where he first fucked up, especially when he put Kung Lao's name in the conversation. Shujinko quickly sat himself up, hissing in pain slightly as his muscles began to strain, and he was reminded that his left leg was sprained. Raiden still paid him no mind, continuing to keep the stillness between them. Shujinko knew that a possible beatdown was waiting for him, so he tried to sneak away as quickly as possible.
"You know, before General Shao, you were the first person to make an attempt on Kung Lao's life."
Shujinko froze upon hearing that, twisting his head to look at Raiden. He almost wished he hadn't that day because the look of Raiden looking at Shujinko over his shoulder, white eyes staring deep into his soul, was another unforgettable image he could never scrub from his mind. His mind was swimming with questions. What did Raiden mean that he almost killed Kung Lao? Never has he ever intentionally attempted to hurt his former master.
"W-what do you mean, master? I would never hurt Master Kung-"
"It's reasonable that you don't remember, you copycat pest," Raiden chastised, making Shujinko feel goosebumps all over his body when Raiden gave him his full attention. "Liu Kang wiped it all away, the memories of the time you got power hungry and nearly compromised the sanctity of the realms."
This all came as a shock to Shujinko as he stared at Raiden stupidly, not registering that Raiden was slowly approaching him.
"And honestly, I think Liu Kang was too kind to you. I should've seen the threat you would become from a mile away. Especially when I watched you nearly snap Kung Lao's neck with your own bare hands. You should've been put down, like the dog you were and the dog you still are." Raiden continued his encroaching walk toward Shujinko, his hair, and eyes now glowing with power as static encompassed him.
Shujinko starts to uselessly crawl away from Raiden, but too frightened to take his eyes off the thunder wielder. "N-no. No, no, no, I would never-"
"JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T REMEMBER DOESN'T MEAN IT NEVER HAPPENED, SHUJINKO," Raiden shouts at the confused pupil, an arc of lightening crashing next to the cowering student, dangerously close for comfort.
"R-RAIDEN, PLEASE, LEAVE ME ALONE!" Shujinko shrieks as he tries to regain his footing, ready to book it out of there.
But he wasn't fast enough, especially with his sprained leg that slowed him down further. Raiden zapped him with multiple streams of lightning straight from his fingertips as he tased Shujinko, the pained screams of his student bringing great inner delight to Raiden, to the amulet. "You're a threat to our realm, to all the realms. You could've been a valuable asset, but Liu Kang is too busy playing the peaceful politician to utilize you as a weapon. Too busy teaching you about harmony and peace when there are actually world-ending threats out there that could be stomped out if we didn't hold ourselves back. That's what killed Kung Lao..."
Shujinko groans in agony as he tries to get away, Raiden's constant assault making it difficult to move any part of his body. "RAIDEN, PLEASE!"
"...So, I guess the only way you won't become a potential threat, is if you are never a threat at all." Raiden began to intensify the bolts of lighting, the sounds of Shujinko howling in pain becoming music to his ears.
"RAIDEN!"
Finally, the lightning stopped, and Shujinko collapsed from the constant strain on his body. Raiden snapped his head towards Liu Kang, the one who gained his attention before he could finally kill Shujinko. The fire god rushed to the unconscious student before angrily looking at Raiden.
"You could've killed him, Raiden! What's gotten into you!?!"
Raiden stared at Liu Kang, not answering him but not showing any signs of guilt either. After a brief pause, Raiden turned his back on the pair and walked away.
"Raiden! Don't you walk away from me! Rai-"
Before Liu Kang could stop him, Raiden disappeared in a flash of lightning. Something Liu Kang was all too familiar with; Lord Raiden would do the same thing if he were to exit a scene.
The next thing Shujinko knew, he was in the many medical care rooms of the Wu Shi Academy, receiving treatment for his wounds. Multiple nurses dressed his injuries before Liu Kang approached Shujinko, expressing how Raiden would no longer be responsible for training him and that he would be assigned to a new teacher. While that was a relief to his ears...Something else bothered Shujinko.
"...Is it true that I almost killed Kung Lao...That I almost destroyed the realms..."
Liu Kang was so taken aback by this that he didn't immediately answer him.
"...Is that why my memories are missing, Lord Liu Kang? Because I'm a threat?" Shujinko's voice starts to shake as he can feel an overwhelming dread take over him.
Even though Liu Kang didn't answer him, the silence was telling. Despite this, Liu Kang didn't conceal the truth from him. Yes, Shujinko did nearly become a threat to all the realms...And yes, regrettably, he did nearly kill Kung Lao when they tried to subdue him. And there were others that Shujinko did kill...His best friend, Apep...Was one of the many casualties that Shujinko caused. All of this because Shujinko, at that time, became puffed up with pride and hungry for power. But it wasn't something that came out of nowhere. Liu Kang admitted that Kung Lao's early years of being a master at the Wu Shi Academy taught him many lessons in being humble; something Lao had to learn the hard way when he was teaching Shujinko the first time.
Liu Kang had no choice but to wipe his memories away, bringing him back to when he was first found by Liu Kang and his warriors. And like a house fire, the flames burned away nearly every inkling of his repertoire, leaving very little for Shujinko to remember. But that also meant, there was no way to recover those memories, even if Liu Kang wanted to give those memories back. Much like a valued family heirloom that was destroyed during a fire, there is precious little that can recover the lost item.
While this meant that Shujinko would not be haunted by the constant reminder of his failures...It still pained him to think that he COULD be a threat to be reckoned with. If anything, he almost wished he never learned the truth. Living in ignorance would've been preferable to living in fear of himself.
-
Shujinko blinks, not realizing that he's been standing idle in front of Liu Kang's private quarters for…Who knows how long. He didn't realize he was deep in thought as he was carrying a tray full of food to the fire god.
Oftentimes, it was just best to leave offerings for the fire god at his (once) usual spots and come back an hour later. Usually, the contents were gone upon returning to retrieve them.
Shujinko should leave the tray behind, knock on the door, then go. But something compelled him to linger a bit longer after the initial knock.
"…Lord Liu Kang?" Shujinko meekly calls out. He tries the door, and to his surprise, it was unlocked.
-
"Are you going to l-let me die? Like you did Lao?"
"HE WOULD'VE WANTED TO LIVE WITH ME. SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE WITH ME! HIS FUCKING BOYFRIEND!"
"I LOVED HIM, LIU KANG! WITH ALL MY HEART, I LOVED HIM!!! AND YOU TOOK HIM FROM ME! YOU DID THIS TO ME!!"
"Even if you didn't know fully that Kung Lao would die, why didn't you tell us! Why didn't you save him?"
"BRING HIM BACK! BRING HIM BACK TO ME!"
"Why did you let him die"
"Why did you let him die"
"Why did you let him die"
Those words will always haunt Liu Kang. The pain in Raiden's voice, the intensity of his lightning strikes, the hatred he felt for Liu Kang. That's not something one can move on from, no matter how many years pass by. But these words cut deeper than Raiden, or anyone could ever imagine
-
In his youthful, mortal years, Liu Kang made the stupidest decision of his life, and fell in love with a god. Of all the people he could dedicate his life to, a beautiful Outworlder, a fellow best friend, a Special Forces agent, hell, even the Hollywood star would've (not really) been a better contestant than the LITERAL GOD OF THUNDER. An entity that will outlive him by decades, who probably went through multiple lovers-Liu would become another footnote in their unending life. Not only that, but he was pretty much RAISED by this man. He practically went through the entire spectrum of relationships with Raiden, first strangers, then friends, mentor/student, father/son…And now Liu Kang wanted to add lovers to that?
Liu Kang, even then, tried to psyche himself out of falling for Raiden. He had many other suitors, plenty of girls and boys who threw themselves at the Shaolin Monk, and he had plenty of options to choose from. But no matter how he tried, his heart yearned for Raiden. If you asked Liu Kang how he discovered that he grew an affinity for Raiden…There was no straight answer.
Liu Kang can probably point to his formative years as a teen already trying to traverse and reconcile with his growing and changing body. He remembered many times where he lingered at those he found attractive, one of those individuals being Raiden. But back then, Liu Kang assumed that he was just "admiring his physique" and using Raiden as a means of motivation to get stronger.
But the feelings of desire did not fade away as he grew older. If anything, they evolved. Soon, he was having silly daydreams about Raiden. Wondering how it would feel to be held protectively by the thunder god as he lifted them away from danger. What his white mane must feel like, and how Raiden would react if Liu ran his fingers through his hair or braided it. Or perhaps how would Raiden feel if Liu put in the effort to make him a meal, something that Raiden would love. He started noticing little details about Raiden that none did, such as the light glow in Raiden's eyes when he was talking with someone he fancied or the age lines when he smiled. But then these innocent daydreams became…Fuel for more carnal wants. Soon, it developed into memorizing his physique for…Reasons.
Liu Kang began to wonder how it would feel to have Raiden pull at his hair, to whisper in his ear, to pin him down, speak sweet nothings to him, to claim Liu Kang as his, something Raiden could do at any point in time if he wished. A god could take whatever it wanted, and Liu Kang would've gladly let Raiden do whatever he desired with him.
But what outweighed the carnality and the soft trances was the genuine love he felt for Raiden. On the same note of noticing small characteristics of the thunder god, Liu Kang did know of his favorite food (it's nuclear buffalo wings), he knew about Raiden's brother, Fujin, knew about the many adventures that Raiden partook in, both sad and joyful. Liu Kang KNEW Raiden and it made him fall for the god most spectacularly.
But Liu Kang overstepped his boundaries. He and Raiden were sparing together as Liu Kang wanted to demonstrate to Raiden that he was ready for the Mortal Kombat tournament. It was a sweat-inducing endeavor as there was an intense back-and-forth, each of them blocking and countering the others' attacks before finally, Liu Kang gained the upper hand, pinning Raiden below him.
"Do you yield?" Liu Kang says, out of breath.
"Y-yes. I yield," Raiden, just as winded, replied as he shoots Liu Kang with a reassuring smile. "You have improved thanks to Bo' Rai Cho's teachings."
"And I have you to thank for making me a recommendation," Liu readjusts himself on top of Raiden, sitting up on top of Raiden while not applying much weight to the god below him.
There's a moment where Raiden and he are quiet after some idle talk, Liu Kang only noticing that Raiden was staring at him with a growing smile. "…What?"
"You are ready, Liu Kang. You will be the one who will save Earthrealm from Outworld's attempts to merge the realms under their tyranny."
Liu Kang, even though he was praised by Raiden countless times before, cannot help the growing heat from surfacing on his face. He faces away from Raiden before muttering, "You flatter me, Lord Raiden…"
"You'll need a constant reminder that I, along with every defender of Earthrealm, will be cheering for you during the tournament. The kombatants you will encounter will test your might, your vigor, and your mental capacities. I believe you are ready. I know you will become the chosen defender that Earthrealm needs." Raiden softly professed as he leaned up, using his elbows to leverage himself.
Liu Kang looked at Raiden, meeting the thunder god eye-to-eye. Liu Kang saw his whole world in Raiden's white pupils, soaking in every hint of emotion that was displayed in front of him.
"Liu Kang?"
Liu didn't even realize that he was leaning closer to Raiden.
"Is there something you want to tell me?"
Liu Kang didn't even register that Raiden was asking questions.
Before Liu Kang knew it, he pressed his lips together with Raiden's. At last, his hearing decided to work so that he could hear the surprised "mph!" noise from the thunder god. It was perhaps Liu Kang's first kiss, he wasn't as adventurous as Kung Lao, who definitely had a few run-ins with various individuals. It being Liu Kang's first, it wasn't anything remarkable, but it was memorable to Liu Kang…But not for the reasons he would've wanted.
When they finally parted, Liu Kang felt like he could breathe again. The shocked expression plastered on Raiden's face, however, was unexpected. They both remain in total silence, neither making a move nor taking the first step to speak. Raiden would finally be the first to move, which indicated for Liu Kang to finally get off the thunder god. Liu Kang, courteously, helped Raiden back on his feet, his hand, however, did not leave Raiden's.
"…I…I must go," Raiden quickly excused himself, disconnecting his hand from Liu Kang.
Liu Kang watched Raiden leave, and the feeling of awkwardness and humiliation quickly overwhelmed him.
Since that day, the pair seemed to share the same idea of just avoiding each other. But where Liu Kang was avoiding Raiden out of embarrassment, Raiden...Liu Kang couldn't figure him out (that bit of mysteriousness always being an aspect of Raiden he did like). Before, Liu Kang didn't mind it, but when Liu Kang began to rediscover the courage to approach Raiden, the thunder god was always turning the other way or shortening their conversations considerably. He could never get a moment with Raiden as he was always in discussion with someone else, busy with other matters, or needed to consult those dreaded Eldar Gods.
But they would finally have a one-on-one...A literal week before the official Mortal Kombat tournament. Liu Kang and Kung Lao were sitting with their Shaolin Monk brethren and family, the spiritual brothers jesting from across the table and talking about their eventful day. Raiden was missing from the scene, but he would suddenly appear in the mess hall where they were all meeting.
"Liu Kang, do you have a moment?"
Many faces turn to Liu Kang with curiosity. The same kind of energy children would have when one is called to the principal's office. Liu Kang feels a knot in his stomach, and he wipes his face with an available napkin, "Yes, Lord Raiden."
"Ooh~! You're in trouble~" Kung Lao jokes, releasing the tension effortlessly in the room.
Liu Kang smirks at his friend, throwing a dumpling at the razerhat wielder before skipping away from the table. Approaching Raiden and meeting him out in the hallway, he noticed that Raiden continued to walk further into the Shaolin Temple.
"Was there a reason for my audience, Lord Raiden?" Liu Kang finally asked after a couple turns here and there, but Raiden still remained silent. The knot in Liu Kang's stomach grows tighter as he anticipates their stop, which means he'll finally be informed the news.
Liu Kang tried to calm himself when they finally reached a secluded area in the temple, outside near the zen garden. Raiden stops in his tracks near a still-in-bloom cherry blossom tree. Funnily enough, it was the same tree he and Kung Lao would often play near when they were children before sometimes secretly training together under said tree.
"...Is there...Something wrong, Raiden?" Liu Kang drops the professionalism as he tries to make this personal, trying to appease to the human side of Raiden.
"...About that...Day...When we both...When we both sparred together as we tested your skills for the tournament."
OHFUCKOHFUCKOHFUCKOHFUCKOHFUCKOHFUCK!
Liu Kang visibly (and if possible, verbally) swallows as he stares at Raiden's back, the thunder god still not facing Liu Kang and meeting him eye-to-eye.
"...Yes..." This was all Liu Kang could utter as he waited for Raiden to continue.
"I...Um..." Even Raiden was loss for words, as if he just decided RIGHT NOW that he wanted to talk about this. "...I...I recognize that you have developed a fondness for me."
It felt like Liu Kang's heart was going to jump out of his body or crawl out of his mouth. A large part of his being was vibrating with excitement. Is this it? Is this the part where they finally take the next step? Liu Kang couldn't help but step in place, leaning against one foot before placing added pressure on the other. Liu Kang wanted to say it. He wanted to declare his emotions in from of Raiden before the thunder god could finish.
"I love you. I love you so much, Raiden. You have no idea the night I would stay up with you on my mind. The pain I go through because I wanted to be near you, close to you, with you."
All of this and more, Liu Kang wanted to confess, but he is disciplined, he is patient. He will wait for Raiden to finish his thought, if he has more to tell.
"...And I have that same...Care for you too, Liu Kang. There's much history between us, and I can understand that you may have grown a deeper affinity for me."
There's a BUT in there. There's a MASSIVE BUT in there. But Liu Kang didn't hear it. He was too enamored, far too blinded by his own love for Raiden to even recognize the writing on the walls.
"But I must, respectfully, decline your love for me."
Liu Kang's world felt like it shattered around him. Somewhere, deep down, Liu Kang knew this could be a possibility. A high probability, in fact.
But it didn't make it hurt any less. Liu Kang stared at Raiden dumbfound. There must be a reason why. Is he not his type? Is it due to the circumstances with the tournament? Is Raiden already seeing someone else? What was the reason?
"…Goodnight, Liu Kang," and Raiden proceeded to walk away. Or, at least, attempt to.
It took all of Liu Kang's willpower to surge after him and grab his wrist, "Wait! W-why can't we? I mean, you said you felt the same way, so why do you 'decline.'" Liu Kang didn't mean to sound desperate, but he wanted to know. Maybe there might still be a chance he can still win Raiden's love.
"Liu Kang, you're letting your emotions control you. I said what I said; there's nothing more to it-"
Liu Kang forces himself in his line of sight, "Why Raiden. That's all I ask."
"Does the why really matter, Liu Kang?"
"It matters enough to me as your friend…"
"…We're not compatible," Raiden tries to say with finality.
"And why is that?"
"Liu-"
"Is it because I'm mortal? The tournament?"
"Liu Kang!" Raiden's eyes flare with godly power as his voice booms like thunder. This immediately quiets Liu Kang. Raiden takes a moment to breathe, reeling back his anger. "…You have many admirable qualities. You're handsome, patient, caring, determined, and good-willed. These are aspects that anyone would fall for and would be lucky to have you as their significant other. And…Perhaps, in another life, I could return your feelings. But I cannot provide you the happiness you think I can give. The amount of responsibilities and burdens…I'm sorry, but I just wouldn't be able to emotionally and physically give back to you."
Liu Kang was speechless as he gazed at Raiden. It hurts too that Raiden is just too good at keeping a stoic look, so Liu Kang can't even find any cracks in his "it's not you, it's me" speech.
"We both will have our 'plates filled' during and after the tournament. A lot of opportunities will be heading your way. I know a mortal's life is short; one must grab at every chance of life that one can. But believe me when I say, that you will find someone who will love you more than I ever could. And it might end up being someone unexpected." Raiden smiles as he places a hand on Liu Kang's shoulder.
Liu Kang slowly hangs his head low slightly, not exactly looking at Raiden's feet, but not meeting his gaze either. "I'm sorry for lashing out, Lord Raiden."
"Do not apologize, it's natural. Believe it or not, I have had plenty of experience with such bursts of emotions. I will always love you, Liu Kang, and I pray that someone will love you more than I do."
-
When Liu Kang recreated this timeline, his main goal and motivation was always to provide his friends a new life. A better life. A second chance at being happy. And sometimes, that meant changing and altering events so that his friends and companions could achieve that life they'd always wanted.
That's why Raiden's words cut so close to home. The old Raiden, the former thunder god, his mentor, his father…The one that got away. Liu Kang only wanted Raiden to be happy because he saw, from the outside looking in, the stress and pressure Raiden had to maintain on his own. And being a fire god himself, he can finally reconcile with those tough decisions Raiden burdened himself with. There were times Liu Kang just wanted to hold him, to kiss away any tears or fears Raiden had.
But they were never meant to be, but that never meant that Raiden's happiness never came first for Liu Kang. Liu Kang may not be able to provide for Raiden emotionally or physically, but he can give him a life where he doesn't have to worry about a single thing. So he put Raiden in his shoes and gave him everything Liu Kang would've wanted. A loving family, a best friend, a wise mentor…A home…Everything Liu Kang has lost or never had, he gave to Raiden…In some way, it was almost like a thank-you gift to the one god who gave him everything in his mortal life.
"Lord Liu Kang?"
Liu Kang opens his eyes as he's slightly disturbed from his meditation. He can see Shujinko peeking through the door, a tray full of food. I'm sorry to disturb you. I wanted to bring you a meal from the mess hall…"
Liu Kang's glowing eyes stare at the young pupil, and he gestures for him to enter. The young man hurries into Liu Kang's quarters, taking brief seconds to admire the gods' room before setting the tray in from of Liu. Just as Shujinko was about to leave, Liu Kang speaks up, "Please, sit with me. I…I would like the company."
"R-really?" Shujinko looks at Liu Kang in utter surprise. He doesn't know anyone in the academy who has sat down with Liu Kang ever since the fire god decided to isolate himself. He's probably the first in a long time to actually SEE Liu Kang in so long. "Are you sure?"
Liu Kang smiles as he picks up the bowl of rice and chopsticks. "I don't eat much anymore. You can have some of the items presented."
Shujinko was still dumbfounded as he watched Liu consume the rice. Shujinko would finally sit across from Liu and pick up a slice of bread and carefully takes a bite. The pair ate in silence, which was more than enough for Liu Kang. Just being near someone, even if it was someone he wasn't too familiar with, Liu Kang knew that at some point, he needed to break this cycle. If Kung Lao was here, he would've scolded him and drag his sorry-ass outside, and forced him to to rekindle himself with the world at large. Liu Kang actually chuckles to himself as he thinks about this.
"Hmm?" Shujinko looks at Liu Kang startled.
"Nothing, Shujinko…Just thinking…" Liu Kang smiles.
-
~whoo, I wrote "considerably" less this time around :D! So, the reason why I picked the title "Burning Tree" is because I was thinking of Shujinko because trees are often associated with family ties and how they're connected to each other. In this case, its more memories than any familial ties Shujinko has with the characters. With his memories gone, it's like a tree burning (or a better analogy being the house fire I mentioned in the story). A burnt tree is nigh reversible and you are stuck with whatever was left behind, if anything was even left behind. That can go hand in hand with Shujinko's (and even Raiden's) memories when Liu Kang removed them. Liu Kang, being the god of fire, can take away those painful memories, but once the deed is done, is irreversible. Even the most dedicated of therapy sessions won't return those lost memories. But like embers after a flame, small fragments might still remain. See, I'm hella smart :D. Also, if it wasn't obvious already, I'm a big Liu Kang/Raiden lover and I was shocked to see there was barely any fics about the pair on AO3. The horror!~

Hey there! How are you?
I dunno if you heard, but Danganronpa Mauve Chapter 1 has been traduced recently, the Free Time Events are currently being published as well.
If you've watched it, what were your thoughts about the plot and characters (victim and culprit especially) ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
//Hey there! I've been meaning to get to this, and now that Zeph has finally posted the FTEs of the key characters in question, I can share.
//See, I never like viewing character behaviors and actions in isolation within the within the killing game and especially not in the trials themselves.
//Now that we've got some context, let's analyze:
//I'm once again annoyed that we're going through Hope's Peak Academy for like the fifth or sixth time, because I'm tired of this damn place and the people running it. That's really more of a me thing than a problem with people who make these games, of course, since it's already an established setting.
//More to the point, I like that Mauve is actually doing somethings differently. For starters, we actually got to switch POVs permanently this time, where our original protag was replaced partway in. Even then, Hiruto and Nozomi both had chances to not only have their own characters, but interact as well.
//I like this cast overall, and nobody annoys or infuriates me as badly as some others I could name : P
//I hesitate to give my opinions on a fangan before Chapter 1 is complete, hence why it took me so long, but I think it was pretty solid, if a bit derivative in its setup. Not bad overall.
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
//However, props for actually killing a protagonist and doing so in a method nobody's done before, using the morning announcement's bell as a cover. That was a twist I genuinely didn't see coming.
//The game did so much to build up Misaki's character, and if you're a long-term fan like me, you're aware that can be a bad sign. I was so certain that she'd be killed or get got in a technicality, but no, she actually had nothing to do with this.
//Also, in kind of a hilarious experience, I used to make some jokes about Hitomi being blind since I thought her eyes being closed was more of an aesthetic thing like with Brock from Pokemon. Meanwhile, I made a prediction that nobody in the group setting up her concert would be the killer, since that felt too obvious to me.
//In the end, my theory was wrong but my jokes were accurate. Hitomi actually IS blind and our culprit was a member of that group.
//Specifically, none other than Kotori, who i never would've thought at first. And yeah, the elephant in the room here is not only her method of killing but also how utterly nasty and elitist she acts at the end of the trial. Something that really cemented the fandom's view o her as a terrible person.
//However, I wanted to see her FTEs before I rendered my judgement, because those are often the best sources of context for behaviors and attitudes among the cast.
//Sure enough, there was a lot to learn from them. Now, I can completely understand why people don't like her- frankly, her attitude does get pretty grating- but it's also kind of hilarious how her character conflict boils down to her feeling unsure about her relationship with her teacher now that she's surpassed his skills.
//Kotori Fukuoka, Suffering From Success.
//More to the point, watching her FTEs really does clear some things up:
Kotori's attitude and open insistence that she's a narcissist, always talking about great she is and how full of herself she is, actually leads me to believe the exact opposite. She doesn't think much of herself and is trying to prop herself up through that attitude.
Watching her FTEs, she never says anything half as elitist and nasty as she did in the post-trial. She never insults Hiruto or Nozomi or anyone else, never implies untalented people don't belong in Hope's Peak and actually apologies at the end. Compare that to someone like Byakuya, who can't shut up about how much he looks down on everyone. I agree with the idea she only said this stuff at the end to retroactively justify the killing to herself.
Her backstory is actually pretty credible, where her sensei- a friend of her parents- was the one who invested so much into her at a young age and wanted to show her what baking is like, even naming a bakery after her. It was thanks to that, and him offering to let her study abroad in France, that she got to make it into the franchise it is by the time Mauve takes place. But now she has no idea what to think, since she's surpassed him as her teacher, and it's clear she views him like a second father. These are the kinds of things that also drove others to become the Blackened.
She says that baking is the only thing she's actually good at. Once again a fine example of how being an Ultimate stunts and limits what people can do, and when that's gone, they feel like they have nothing else.
//So no, I don't see Kotori as just an inherently bad person. She's an arrogant little snot who needs her ego deflated, but she's nothing like some of the nastier characters we've seen out there, who trample over others without a second thought. We need to consider that the Killing Game often brings out the best and worst in people, especially when they're driven to murder.
//People don't reveal who they "really are" at the end, they say and do all kinds of crazy shit because they're afraid of dying. People reveal who they really are when they're most comfortable, like they often are at the ends of their FTEs.
//Overall, I'm really looking forward to Chapter 2 and where we go from here.

Patreon Reward: Pure Support Group, Chapter 8: Winter
Winter visits Beacon, and ends up needing to share her story of meeting Joan...
“Hello, everyone, and welcome to another meeting of FABJA.” Lian Ren’s voice, while soft, carried throughout the room as she looked over those who had come to this meeting. Pyrrha and Nora were both absent, Pyrrha due to being Joan’s teddy bear for the night (though she had caught the look of pleasured despair on Pyrrha’s face before it vanished from view as a sleeping Joan pulled her head into her cleavage), and Nora due to staying overnight in the medical wing for some tests.
The usuals were here, as always, those constantly around Joan so always the most effected, like Velvet Scarlatina and May Zedong, who had been conversing with one another and Ruby as they waited for the meeting to begin.
Emerald Sustrai, Neapolitan, and Cinder Fall were in their usual seats, drawing strength from one another.
The Malachite sisters sat near them close enough to join in on a conversation if necessary, far enough away that they could have spoken to themselves privately if they wanted.
However, the focus of today’s meeting was currently hunched in a chair, surrounded by several others.
Winter Schnee did not currently look like the epitome of professionalism that she had looked earlier in the day when they had all met her. Her uniform coat was rumpled, her hair was coming out of its bun, and that had nothing on the massive cum stain on the front of her previously crisp, clean, and unsoiled uniform pants.
Around her were Weiss, Neon, Ciel, Fiona, and Elm, all the other Atlesians who had come to the support group before, each of them seemingly rallying around the pale woman. Then again, they all knew the embarrassment that she was experiencing, that was for certain, having all been there at one point or another.
"Tonight, we have a new person joining us, the elder sister of one of our own. Please give Winter Schnee a warm welcome. She has her own story to tell today." Lian could tell that it had to be something horrible (well, in certain context) to make the strict officer that she had met earlier that day to lose so much decorum and look as frazzled as she was at the moment. “Winter? You have the floor whenever you are ready.”
Winter opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again, then shook her head and took several deep breaths, before she swallowed hard, looking up, her face set in determination. She sighed. “W-Well, it all s-started when I a-arrived…”
~
Winter Schnee walked with purpose through Beacon’s hallways, intent on looking for the girl that everyone she was in communications with had been taling about, not only extolling the virtues of, but telling her many horror stories about what had happened around her…particularly several similar stories from New Year’s Day.
While she wasn’t one to honestly believe that her subordinates were prone to flights of fancy, the stories she had heard seemed…fantastical in nature. A girl capable of being as kind and sweet as this in a combat academy? To be able to make her subordinates publicly embarrass themselves so easily? It seemed like a well choreographed group of lies.
But…a small part of her mind wondered. After all, she had been in contact with Weiss much longer and she told stories quite similar, though her verbage had been rather…angry…in the beginning, but was no getting softer.
It was her sister’s words that made her intent on meeting this girl for herself. After all, it took a great deal to make her sister change her mind about anything, so she wanted to know what it was about this girl that caused such a thing.
Reaching the room where she had last heard the girl to be, she looked in, and her eyes widened as she saw the person within.
~
“I didn’t realize you hadn’t…well…exaggerated…her proportions…” Winter muttered, cheeks flushed, getting coughs from other members of Mantle and Atlas in the room as they looked around at everything but Winter, each of them remembering just how they had described the girl that affected them so in their missives.
Needless to say, all of them were more than a bit…complimentative…in their descriptions of Joan and how she looked.
~
Winter swallowed hard as she saw the beautiful blonde that had apparently enamored so many of her compatriots cleaning the tables of the Dust Studies classroom, wearing the Beacon Academy uniform which was very…flattering on her body.
Now she found herself understanding just why so many times she had heard the terminology ‘Pure Girl’ being thrown around when the girl was brought up in discussion. She was radiant…and she was reminded of that one highly embarrassing night where someone had arranged a graduation gift for her. She still didn’t know who had arranged it.
Shaking her head of those thoughts, lest she get an erection in her uniform pants (it was difficult enough for her to get her testicles in, thank you!), and straightened her shoulders, and headed in, shoulders squared.
~
Weiss’s brow pinched. “‘Graduation Present’? Winter, what do you mean?” she asked, getting a snicker from Elm and a panicked cough form the older of the two sisters.
“Never mind, Weiss! Let me continue!”
~
“Hello, Miss Arc, was it?” Winter made sure not to startle her, not only had she heard some…interesting…stories about how the girl acted when she was frightened, they were in a room filled with Dust. Which could be incredibly volatile if suddenly jostled.
The blonde paused in her scrubbing down the table and looked up, a beautiful, genuine smile forming on her face. “Hello! Winter, right? Weiss told us a lot about you!” the chipper, earnest tone pulled the faintest hint of a smile to Winter’s lips.
“All good things, I hope.” Winter said, surprised at the playfulness that her own voice took as she spoke, making the blonde giggle which did…things…to her bosom.
Good Lord, was the girl even wearing a bra? It shouldn’t even be possible for one’s chest to bounce that much!
“Oh, yes! Weiss really, really admires and looks up to you! She’s told us what she can; she did mention that your job had a fair amount of Op Sec surrounding it.” Winter found herself almost entranced at how the blonde spoke as she cleaned, Winter swallowing as she realized just how familiar she was…and how interesting the pose she chose for cleaning was…
As the blonde leaned over the table, her bust swayed with every movement, bouncing and jiggling, her chest and rear end shaking as she she did so.
Licking her dry lips, Winter realized that she needed to talk, otherwise she would likely end up doing something…potentially most unwise. “So, how are you enjoying Beacon? Weiss told me she herself experienced quite a bit of culture shock upon arrival.” Winter wasn’t lying about that, remembering the flurry of texts and messages from Weiss in her first few weeks at the school, some far more scathing than others.
The blonde paused, before giggling, her bosom jiggling dangerously, the creamy flesh of her cleavage growing more expansive with every bounce. “Well it was a bit rough in the beginning, though it helped that unlike Weiss, I didn’t exactly come without a support base, so I suppose that helped me? It doesn’t hurt that I was less…” the blonde paused, seeming to look for the proper word.
Winter smiled thinly. “My mother and I always called her ‘prickly’ when she was in one of her moods.”
~
“Sister!?” Weiss burst out, scandalized, while those who knew the girl all stifled laughs, as ‘prickly’ was a nice way of talking about the girl when she was in one of her moods.
~
The blonde giggled again, even louder this time as she nodded in agreement. “My mother would have taken me or any of my sisters over her knee had we acted like that in public.” she said, shaking her head, before she pouted. “She was really mean to me and Ruby before she calmed down, too.” she shook her head. “But she’s much kinder now, she’s calmed down a lot since the start of school…” she titled her head in a very familiar fashion, and Winter found herself wondering why the girl seemed so familiar, but forced her curiosity down, instead looking at the table that was now completely clean.
“Are you enjoying Dust Studies, Miss-!?” Winter’s words died in her throat as she saw the girl start to slip on some water on the floor, and found herself moving before she thought about it, scooping the young woman into her arms, only to slip herself and land on her back, her Aura tanking the blow…
…though she was not prepared for the fact that the girl landed chest first against her face, practically smothering her in softness, sweet scents, the dull thump of a heartbeat…
…and she found her cock exploding as the contents of her balls evacuated, her mind immediately going back to another moment like this, where she had a pair of tits this large, this soft, this sweet smelling, shoved in her face, her panties becoming ruined and her uniform pants becoming soaked on the front as she whined in humiliation, the sound lost in the cavernous bosom.
~
“...thankfully, she was too embarrassed falling chest first onto my face to notice that I came…” Winter sighed, looking down at her lap.
Cinder huffed a bit. “Don’t feel too ashamed. We’ve all been in that position…” the horse faunus sighed, folding her arms under her bust and shaking her head. Glancing down at her lap, where her own cock was making a massive tent.
Lian coughed into her hand, bringing attention back to her, “Cinder is right, Winter. We have all been there; that is why we have these meetings. Thank you for coming and sharing your story with us. Let us retire for the night, and we will meet up next when one of us needs to share a ‘Joan related incident’, okay?”
Receiving nods and calls of affirmation, Lian managed a small smile, despite the strain in her own nightgown. “Everyone have a good night.” she watched as the group stood up and started to disperse, before she finally did herself after shutting down the room, doing her best to keep from stimulating her cock anymore before she got back to the dorm room.
It was looking to be a long night…

Cipher Academy ch.24 thoughts
[As Far as I Can Throw Her]
Our first color page since chapter 2! Aaand it’s all of the characters that were in the previous color pages...how disappointing! We do see on Toshusai’s keychains that both Omomuro and Yugata are blondes, which is...also kind of disappointing in its own way, since that’s a pretty standard color and they both have the same hair color rather than one being blonde and the other white-haired or something as I expected. It’s not a huge deal, I just like variety
It is appropriate that these three are together for the color page, though, as not only are they teaming up in this chapter, they are also in essence the de facto main trio. I will not be rescinding my assessment that Anonymity is the Victory character of the main triumvirate, though, as not only do we not yet know quite enough about Kogoe to make that kind of judgment on her, I am also quite confident that she’s going to be the main antagonist of the series, perhaps becoming something akin to Ajimu from Medaka Box
Still, I’m thinking about it now, so I will at least hazard a guess at what Kogoe’s key value is going to turn out to be; if Toshusai, Iroha and Yosaimura are traditional Friendship, Effort and Victory and Anonymity is a corruption on Victory, then Kogoe is undoubtedly a corruption on Friendship. In fact, this chapter serves as a perfect example of that very idea, which is convenient, because that’s what I was planning to talk about this review before I went on this tangent!!
Iroha’s question of who Kogoe was actually expecting to win really cuts to the core of the situation: Kogoe’s loyalties are a complete mystery. During Leaky Poker, CG suggested that Kogoe really was backing Iroha, but A) that might only have been in the context of the four finalists, and B) her actions and dialogue make it pretty clear that we can’t just take a line like that at face value. When Toshusai enters the room and starts acting threatening, Kogoe is very quick to change her tune and claim that Toshusai was her favorite all along, which she says right in front of Iroha! Kogoe is flippant and opportunistic, with machinations to manipulate everyone at her disposal to act in her favor and then cut and run at the most convenient moment
I don’t buy for a second that she plans to share the Morg with Iroha; calling him something grand like the Code Emperor is a blatant attempt to appeal to whatever sense of romance he has, trying to endear herself to him and give him the confidence to pull off the insane stunts she has planned for him. The other CLPs are effectively holding the passwords hostage, meaning that they most likely know how manipulative Kogoe can be, and by retaining leverage they are able to defend against her manipulations. This is why Kogoe is putting all of her eggs in Iroha’s basket (unless she’s playing all of the CLPs against each other...), because she knows he’s the only one who she can still effectively puppeteer among the CLPs
Fitting, then, that the puzzle we are shown at the beginning of the chapter details three characters (plus the narrator) who are all stated to be lying; “everyone is lying about one thing” is a lie that could easily refer to the meeting of Iroha, Kogoe and Toshusai - ONE person is lying about EVERYTHING, and that person is certainly Kogoe
I have no idea what’s going to happen when Kogoe gets her hands on all of the passwords or what kinds of abilities they’ll unlock in the Glasses Weapons, but that will definitely be the moment when her status as the antagonist is cemented. I suppose if CA gets canceled, we’ll be seeing that sooner than later, though Nisio continues to seem unperturbed, as he keeps dropping hints about other characters. This time, he dropped a hint about Nutaba’s injuries, which I’m starting to think are related to one of the CLPs; she said her friend invited her to enroll, so I think there’s a good chance that that friend is among the CLPs if she wasn’t lying at the time. My bet’s on either the magical girl or the bag-head
Finally, I want to brag: as I posted earlier this week, I solved Q.81 all on my own! I figured out the trick answer first, then reread and focused on “everyone is lying”, which I correctly concluded to mean that this included the narrator. If I had to guess, I’d say I solved this one so easily because I have personal experience with a similar puzzle; a friend of mine once took me on a picnic with three sandwiches labeled “I am poison”, “I am safe”, and “Sandwich 2 is poison”; at most, only one sandwich was telling the truth, and only one sandwich was poisoned. If I recall, the solution I came to was that my friend was also lying, and that all three were safe. I don’t remember if that was the correct solution, but it predisposed me to being on the lookout for misleading questions
If I’m lucky, this is a sign of good things to come for my puzzle-solving abilities! But probably not

3 - The Skeleton Bowl
A week or so later, Caitlyn found herself sitting across from Caterina. Caterina was an older, tall blue skinned elf that wore a tight bun and round glasses. She was an imposing figure, and she spoke eloquently. That was her job, as a lawyer. Caterina, for a small time, was a defense attorney in a very small part of Skylands, but later found her calling working with the Skylanders as legal counsel for the Academy. Caitlyn admired her very deeply, as many cadets came from difficult, morally gray, and, most important to Caterina, legally gray backgrounds. It was her job to help cadets earn basic documents such as birth records and clear up any criminal history to live normal domestic lifes.
Today however, Caterina was assisting Caitlyn in the dreaded case room. It had already been many hours into the day of the two assembling new cabinets and filling them with files. Exhausted, they sat across each other enjoying tea in a comfortable quiet. Somehow to Caitlyn, it felt like sitting with an aunt she never had.
“So Caitlyn,” Caterina broke the silence with her sultry voice, “How have the Trap Team treated you?”
“Ah well,” Caitlyn hesitated. “It’s been pretty quiet for me since the first day.”
“I heard about the capture. The investigation is going smoothly for once, it seems.”
“I mean, yeah I guess. There was some arguing in the morning over something I didn’t get the context of. The mission itself was rather tense.”
Caterina chuckled. “That’s how it is here sometimes. The Trap Team can have some short tempers that get set off by anything. But, everyone has their own reasons, and as you get to know them better, you’ll find it easier to steer.”
“They still see me as a kid. I’m sure they’re putting on their best behavior to not upset me,” Caitlyn stirred her tea absentmindedly.
“That’s not exactly right,” Caterina said. “Sure that’s how it may look, but you’re now on the same level as Master Eon. If they argue in front of you, it’s pretty disrespectful to your position, is it not? Do you even remember a time there was an explosive argument in front of Eon? Or even snide comments? No, right? If there is a problem you can solve, they’ll bring it to you, I’m sure.”
Caitlyn smiled slightly. “That makes me feel a little better, I think.”
“Don’t overthink it, hon. If you need any help, I’m here for you.”
The Skeleton Bowl. Oh, this place stank. Knight Light and Knight Mare were the unlucky bastards stuck with information gathering in the thief capital of Skylands. They wore brown cloaks and blended into the crowd easily, scouring dive after dive for the owner of the calling card. After the fifth or so bar, they hid in an alleyway and made a record of their findings.
“I cannot believe these crazy folks built a town on a mega whale skeleton. It’s so… gross and slimy,” Knight Mare scraped goop off of her shoulder.
“Pretty sure the slime isn’t the skeleton’s fault. The poor thing can’t rest in peace with all the street life,” Knight Light sharpened his Traptanium Scimitar.
“I’ve got half a mind to blow this island out of the Sky.”
“Divine justice like that will have to wait until we get the owner of this card.”
Dear Eon, this card. Knight Mare was already done with the nasty little town, and even more annoyed at the calling card.
“This is so stupid,” she started. “Why would a random extra leave these cards? They have to just belong to Merchant’s Curse, or whatever his name is.”
“I have a theory,” Knight Light looked out toward the street. “It’s possible that the culprit had some form of enmity toward Bane, so they left a trail to follow. What eludes me is how Bane was clueless about it for so long.”
“He’s cocky. That’s why. He’s incapable of thinking outside of stupidity and intelligence, so he missed out on malice being a motive.”
“Bingo bongo babe, that’s it!” Knight Light stood up. “Let’s try this again.”
The angel and centaur walked into a bar further down the alleyway. It somehow smelled worse than outside, like several animals were rotting away in the rafters, which given the rest of the town really wasn’t a stretch. There were a couple mabu passed out on their tables, some other ruffians drinking in the corner, and a somber bartender near the back.
Knight Light, with his usual bright attitude, talked to the bartender. “A fine day we find ourselves in, huh?”
He didn’t turn around to greet him.
“Aw, a rough day for you bud? Come on, lay it on me, I’m told I’m good company,” Knight Light continued as the bartender kept ignoring him.
“Dude, this isn’t working. Let’s just go spend money somewhere else,” Knight Mare interrupted, which peaked his attention.
The bartender opened his hand. Following the motions, Knight Mare dropped a few gold coins in his hand. He pointed to the backroom and turned back around.
“What…?” Knight Light was dragged by Knight Mare to the backroom. What awaited them there was a dusty log book and boxes of raisins. The windowless room had an overwhelmingly ominous air. Trying not to choke on the dust, the two scanned the log book for familiar names, places, anything to connect the calling card to.
“Wait, wait, turn it back,” Knight Mare compared the page to a list she got from Kaboom. “Ah no, that’s Vermillion Shores, not Vixen Heights. Damn, is there really no connection?”
“Apparently not, c’mon, let’s get out of here before I develop a dust allergy,” the angel turned the door knob. Locked? No, no, no.
“What are you doing? Open the door already.”
“I can’t! It’s locked!”
“What!? Move out of my way!” But no matter how much she struggled, the door wouldn’t budge.
Caitlyn turned into the meeting room at the wrong time. It had been 2 days since Knight Mare and Knight Light were sent to the Skeleton Bowl, and Snap Shot was putting together a rescue mission anxiously. She knew the Bowl was a dangerous part of the criminal underworld, and if they moved too slowly, they’d be recovering bodies. So, she kept silent in the corner and observed.
Every member of the Trap Team was there, save Tuff Luck, Kaboom, Blastermind, and Wallop, who were on guard duty that day.
“We pinged their last location in the Skeleton Bowl 16 hours ago. It’s unlikely they are still there,” Gearshift said in a monotone fashion. “I propose we send Enigma and Head Rush out to do the rescue. Their initial capture of Bane failed to produce information sufficient for a crawl of the Bowl.”
“Gear!” Tuff Luck exclaimed. “Passing blame around won’t solve anything!”
“Blame has no bearing on this. Is it not logical to have people already familiar with the case clean up?” Gearshift tilted her head, something that irritated Tuff Luck more.
Snap Shot sighed. “Please, no more of this. It falls on me to prepare for these events, however because of my-”
“Just let us go,” Head Rush interrupted. “If we were more careful, more could have been recovered from the scene.”
“I agree with Gearshift’s logic,” Enigma said.
“I guess that’s that then, huh?” Tuff Luck said, dejected.
“Meeting adjourned then, for everyone except you two. I have something I’d like cleared up,” Snap Shot watched as the Trap Masters filed out of the room, and waited for the door to click shut.
“Alright, what happened out in the Wastes? I was under the impression that it went smoothly, but now we are down two because of what? Please make this known to me,” Snap Shot asked, mildly ticked off.
“I’ll answer that if I get to ask you a question first,” Enigma said firmly.
“What the hell are you doing?” Head Rush asked hurriedly.
“Why did you let someone sensitive to heat out to the desert? Caitlyn could have died of a stroke, almost 110 degrees, miles from any help-”
“Master Caitlyn outranks you and me. It’s not a matter of me letting her do something or not!” Snap Shot shouted.
“She is a child! Surely a leader such as yourself would see the problem here! Why would you defer judgement to someone that’s not even old enough to hold a land deed?!” Enigma shouted back, which threw Head Rush off. But Snap Shot got angrier.
“Master Eon deemed her a full fledged Portal Master! Why do you think your judgement is the correct one here?!”
“Oh? It really doesn’t strike you as improper? Maybe your morality is more twisted than I thought!”
“Morality! Morality he says! You are way out of line right now! How dare you question Eon’s decision!” In all their years working together, Snap Shot had never gotten this heated with a member, let alone the normally reclusive Enigma.
“I’m so sorry that I don’t mindlessly take everything that Eon says as law! Do you even hear yourself right now?”
Head Rush turned around and noticed Caitlyn standing in the corner, shaking. How long had she been standing there? “Caitlyn…” Head Rush reached her hand out, but the young portal master bolted out of the door with tears streaming down her face.
“See what you did?!” Snap Shot yelled.
Enigma felt an intense pang of guilt. He meant everything he said, but he would have never exploded like that in front of her. Neither would Snap Shot.
“Both of you get the hell out of here,” Snap Shot sat back down in his chair, gripping a pencil with enough force to snap it. “And don’t come back until you have something!”
Caterina noticed Caitlyn running through the halls toward her room. “Hey, hey, slow down- oh goodness, why are you crying?”
Caitlyn wiped her tears, “It’s nothing, I’m sorry.”
“Caitlyn, my dear, you can talk to me.”
“Dude, holy crap, what even happened to you in there?” Head Rush was piloting the airship to the Skeleton’s Bowl, carefully tracking the ping.
“I do not wish to talk about it,” Enigma felt the guilt even worse. He stared out of the airship, not making eye contact with Head Rush.
“I mean, you do you buddy, but that did not come from nowhere. You’ve been letting something fester, and that’s really not healthy. So, like, I don’t know, share? Please?” Head Rush trailed off. Why am I such a magnet for emotions this week?
She was right about it festering, but Enigma wasn’t able to talk about any of his reasons in a concise manner, so he kept it to himself.
It was a long airship ride. Or maybe it was quick, and the awkward silence dragged it out for what felt like centuries. The two wordlessly left the airship and walked into the skeleton town.
But there was no one on the streets. Not even the street cats or birds.
“This… doesn’t feel right,” Head Rush looked all around. It was only her and Enigma on the street.
“They were expecting us.” Enigma’s sigil shook and darted its gaze all around.
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“It’s a failsafe. If Bane was captured, he’d have leverage to get himself out of prison by capturing our own. And now we’ve volunteered ourselves to his cause.”
“Ah, so they’re hiding. I can make quick work of that. Cover your ears.”
Following orders, Enigma took cover behind a pillar and covered his ears, bracing for the impact. Head Rush took a large gasp and belted a High Note. Several drow fell off of the roofs of surrounding buildings, some stumbled out of the alleys, but they all were powerless against the sound.
Head Rush went to shake Enigma out of his protected position, and the two ran toward the pinged location.
Meanwhile, Knight Mare and Knight Light woke up tied to pillars in some… basement? They weren’t really sure.
“Well, well, well, look who has woken up finally!” A voice neither recognized, spoke.
“Who are you?” Knight Light shouted at the shadow.
“Me? Ah that hardly matters does it?” The voice was a small statured boy, with tanned skin and elf-like ears. He wore a black leather jacket, ripped up jeans, and boots with way too many belts. “My friends call me Bacchus, but you won’t need to know that for much longer.”
“Where the hell are we?” Knight Mare struggled to break her binds to no avail.
“Pft, why do you care? You’ll both be dead soon.” Bacchus drew a dagger from his hip, and brandished the tip to Knight Mare’s throat. “No one comes to the Skeleton Bowl and leaves without a few scars.” He manically laughed. “By the ancients! Neither of you would have met a dead end here if you just ignored the bait. It’s really simple, you know, to convince this town to mind their business. There’s no way help can reach you now.”
“Knight Mare, hang on!” Knight Light shuffled as hard as he could, but the binds wouldn’t budge. He desperately wanted to get Knight Mare out of harm’s way, but how? “There has to be a way out!”
Bacchus switched his gaze to the bound angel. “Actually, let’s dispose of you first. Your optimism is disgusting.” The short elf sheathed his dagger and wound up his leg, impacting the angel’s head. Over and over.
Knight Mare couldn’t even speak. She just watched in horror.
His face was bleeding bright red; he spit blood on the elf’s shoe. “I’m not scared of dying. I won’t make this satisfying for you.” Knight Light mustered a sly smile, taunting the elf further. He was proud to take a beating to spare his friend.
“Why you!” Of course, Bacchus was taunted effectively. But this time, he successfully knocked the angel unconscious. “Finally. Nothing pisses me off more than some do-gooder preaching.”
Knight Mare prepared herself as Bacchus’s ire returned to her neck.
“There they are!” a familiar voice boomed through the planks. Head Rush?!
Head Rush and Enigma breached the room to find Bacchus’s dagger dangerously close to Knight Mare’s neck.
“Put that down, there’s no point in resisting,” Head Rush said aggressively, reading her fists. She and Enigma noticed the angel slumped opposite of Knight Mare, and they felt a flood of urgency.
“Or what?”
“One escape. Two against one. The odds are in our favor, not yours,” Head Rush continued. “Don’t make the wrong decision.”
“We don’t have to fight. Come with us quietly. Haven’t you already done what you wanted?” Enigma calmly said.
Bacchus pondered it for a second. “Eh, fine. Whatever.” He threw the dagger, piercing the wall parallel to him.
Head Rush quickly bound his wrists, while Enigma hurriedly unraveled Knight Mare’s binds. Once he made sure the centaur was uninjured, he checked the angel over carefully, nervous to examine his wounds. Knight Light was battered, but he was breathing fine. The magic Skylander sighed a breath of relief, thankful his friend wasn’t hurt due to his mistake. When did I get so attached to you? He shook the thought away, and carefully carried the angel to the airship, while Head Rush kept Bacchus in a tight grip.

After the heartache of the Volume 8 finale, I would like to return to a happier point in the show and suggest some memes/jokes that I like to think the students at Beacon would have had. More closely inline with the RWBY Chibi-verse, than the actual show - where Nothing Bad Ever Happened.
"Who's child is this?" being used to refer to Ruby - the youngest student at Beacon - when she's left unsupervised and/or doing something odd.
"I'd let Glynda punish/whip me for one corn chip."
Every now and again "Missing - Have you seen this person?" posters for Professor Peach will pop up around campus. No one knows who it is that keeps making them.
Vomit Boy candids being taken and shared any time Jaune is Suffering™️ on some form of transport.
The Great One plush of Pyrrha exists in-universe... and becomes the go-to prize for any stupid competition between the students. There's at least a dozen of these dolls on campus now, owned by various people and won as "spoils of war."
There's a dedicated chalkboard in the combat room for tallying how many times Nora has launched someone into the stratosphere. Notable mentions are listed on the board alongside her of other people who have achieved this feat - including Yang, Yatsuhashi, and Glynda.
(She launched both Port and Oobleck one day when they kept annoying her. Sometimes, their screams can still be heard if you listen closely enough.)
"There's that old guy again..." "Oh, shopkeep? Yea, he's everywhere. Don't think too much about it."
This leads to "Don't think too much about it." becoming something of a slogan for every time anything unusual happens.
"Candy canes, kids! One for Sun Wukong, one for Yang Xiao-Long, ooh four for Coco Adel, you go Coco!"
"I--"
"Andnoneforweissschneebye~"
Team STRQ having something akin to legend status at Beacon, whispered in hushed voices for fear and reverence of their names. There's a war between the students regarding team JNPR as their successors vs. the students who insist JNPR are not anywhere near worthy of such a title.
"How many team CRDLs does it take to beat Pyrrha?"
Blurry fancam-style videos of the Qrow vs. Winter fight out in the courtyard being traded around like baseball cards with other students. Some try and manufacture a "rematch" of this with the materials they've got - trying to get Ruby and Weiss to fight each other.
That weird sing-song "HellOooOo~" that Yang sometimes does being mimicked by everyone. And I mean everyone.
Any time there's a significant lull in conversations or classes, someone often asks "Why are we here?" which never fails to make everyone in the vicinity groan.
"Ozpin is compensating for something" jokes about his office chair - including at least one popular response being "it's the war crimes", without them knowing just how accurate they actually are.
"On a scale of Ren-Nora, how excited do you want me to be?"
"Ladies Love Lavender" referring to Lisa Lavender having her own in-universe fandom mostly comprised of women. (Lavender being associated with lesbians irl, and I just think this would be funny.)
The sight of Ren just picking up and carrying Nora away from something is so commonplace that other people start doing it to their friends when they Need To Stop.
"Why is Blake's bow so big?" "Because it's full of secrets."
Blake being a closet faunus being such a poorly hidden secret that by the time she finally takes off the bow no one actually even notices.
The betting pool surrounding exactly what it is in Ozpin's cup - coffee being one of the least popular options, and souls being the top choice.
Using Yatsuhasi as a unit of measurement.
Photoshopping adorable images of Velvet onto various "cute" animal memes.
Everyone wanting to be spanked by Coco Adel.
"I'd let Fox blow me up too."
"Why is Weiss' hair so long?" "To reflect the length of her father's crimes."
Everyone mimicking Pyrrha's memetic "I'm sorry!" anytime they apologise for anything. Even going as far to do it while apologising to things that don't require apologies - like inanimate objects.
"Are Port and Oobleck, you know... 💅?"
In fact, just that 💅 being used to refer to a large number of people at Beacon. Actual LGBT students picking this up and using it towards grimm when they're attacked to question the sexuality/homophobia of the grimm targeting them over their peers.
Threatening Neptune with water anytime he flirts with a girl who is clearly Not Interested in him.
No one knowing who, exactly, the other two members of team SSSN are - with wild theories abounding about who they may be. Popular choices include Shopkeep, Zwei, and Professor Peach.
This persists even after their tournament fights where they're shown. Scarlet and Sage are perfectly content with this, and participate.
"Arslan's/Pyrrha's back must be aching from constantly carrying her entire team."
And the respective responses of, "Reese/Nora are alright."
Similar jokes about Glynda also carrying the entire faculty/academy on her back.
"Salutations!"
The war between the "Irondaddy" fanbase, and his haters - who refer to him with various derogatory versions of his name. "Metalpenis", "Coppercock", "Chromeshaft", etc.
Anytime someone is doing something ~questionable~ donning a pair of glasses and/or imitating Oz or Oobleck pushing them back up their nose with accompanying menacing body language. (Kubrick Stare optional.)
Mercury having a foot fetish, courtesy of the people who caught him sniffing shoes at the festival.
"Did <character> just die?" "You know, it was really unclear." any time someone takes some insane damage in a fight and isn't seen for some time afterwards.
Everyone trying to locate and get a pic of the ~mysterious~ fourth member of team CMSN, who has only ever been spotted once - her tournament fight in the first round. Beacon's version of "Where's Wally?"
The Sympathy Fund for Emerald and her one-sided crush on Cinder. "She could honestly do so much better."
People offering themselves up as tribute to spar with Pyrrha/Yang/Coco/Sun just so they can be beaten up by the hottest people on campus.
"I drink milk!" being used as a defensive argument in wildly inappropriate contexts.
Naming grimm really boring names and attempting to keep them as pets.
The innumerous times Port has allowed a "zoo-break" to happen under his watch and everyone having to assist in recovering his prized subjects.
"Where the fuck are all the fourth years?" "Ozpin's soul collection."
Candid shots of Glynda Suffering™️ being shared similarly to the ones of Vomit Boy.
Ranking people based on their Patience Levels - Pyrrha, Ren, Glynda, Emerald, and Fox being frequent top markers based on the bullshit they put up with from their respective teams.
"Saint Pyrrha" being a common nickname for her, and her neverending niceness towards people who absolutely do not not deserve it.
Weiss' "Hey!" being replicated amongst the student body and slowly growing more and more high-pitched in its replication until it eventually just becomes a shrill noise. Even so, everyone still knows what it means - and Weiss is absolutely unamused by all of this.
In fact, a lot of early!Weiss' comments being mercilessly mocked by everyone - "I'm a victim!" being one of them.
Renowned fear permitting amongst the student body regarding Yang's red eyes meaning Serious Business. Morphs into references of "going full Yang" to mean having rage-fuelled temper tantrums.
"Never miss a beat, never miss a beat" becoming a mantra for focusing on a task. This inspires several remixes of Neon saying it, and again with no one knowing who it is making them.
By all means, feel free to add any more that you all think of! I could use a laugh!
Also, check the notes for additions!

One kind of intern
(A/N): This was requested by @greenslifestuff :) It took me a week or two because I had to interact with my friends in order to get the inspiration I needed 😅 Summary: The team gets to work with a gen z teenager. Let’s see how that goes.
Warnings: Swearing and gen z humour
Wordcount: 2k
✨Masterlist✨
___________________________________
“Team, this is (Y/N) (L/N). She will be interning for the upcoming three months alongside this team. (Y/N), these are Agents Emily Prentiss, Jennifer Jareau, David Rossi, Derek Morgan and Doctor Spencer Reid and our Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia”, Hotch introduces a teenage girl to his team like this happens every day.
“Wait Hotch, we don’t get interns. What is she going to do, no offense, but getting us coffee or what?” Morgan eyes her suspiciously. She looks like any teenager grabbed from the street. A band t-shirt, a torn pair of jeans and a cup from starbucks in her hands. Nothing you would expect to even enter a federal building.
“No offence taken, Agent Morgan. I know having an ugly pickly bitch working with professionals seems weird. It’s just I have summer break and I thought it would be a good thing on my resumé if I already interned in the FBI, because I just graduated and I wanted to go to the academy this fall. But if you wanna do a vibe check with me first, that’s fine by me. Whatever floats your boat.”
The room falls silent. Then out of all sudden everyone turns to Garcia, who puts her arms up in defense. “I don’t even know half the things she said, ask her yourself.”
That’s how the BAU gets their first contact with Gen Z culture and let me tell you it is a wild ride, so buckle up your seats, drink your tea up because we aren’t going to make any stops.
“(Y/N), I need you to come with me. We are going to the M.E. getting the latest reports from our last case”, Morgan tells her while passing her desk. In the blink of an eye the teenager is ready, putting her denim jacket with various pins and bits of patches on.
“Derek, can we get starbucks on the way back? The pumpkin spiced latte is back on their menu and I am on withdrawal. Pleaaaaaasseeee”, she looks at him with a pouty face. Morgan smiles. “Ok, under one condition: We both get one, take awesome pictures and send them to the group chat and then we act like we didn’t get them anything, but we actually buy them their usual.” He got the hang of it pretty fast. “Deal, Sis.”
While they are in the car on their way to the M.E. the agent groans. “Ugh, road work ahead.” “Uh yeah, I sure hope it does!” Morgan eyes her from the side. His whole demeanor says ‘old and confused’.
“What was that, kid?” But (Y/N) begins to laugh. “Don’t you know vines? Short dumb and funny clips people made?” It’s safe to say that this afternoon he learns to speak in vines, getting on Rossi’s nerves because nothing makes sense anymore.
“Ok, I heard you wanted to become a profiler. So I thought I would show you some old cases and then you try to figure out the profile. I’ll present them to you like I do to the team, alright?” JJ and (Y/N) sit in her office, safe from curious eyes. “As right as the law, Ma’am.”
“Good, this is a case from several years ago. It happened here in D.C. Three men were murdered execution style in the middle of the night in an alleyway. They were all from different backgrounds. The only connection between them was that they were evicted for some form of sexual harassment or assault. The UnSub also had a signature: A shot into their groin while the men were alive.”
Unfaced by the presented facts (Y/N) pops a piece of gum into her mouth. “It do be like that.”
“What?” “I mean, it’s obviously a woman. She experienced any harassment or assault herself. She also has excess to the files, I assume she works as a paralegal, since most of them are women. Female serial killers are extremely rare, but they are better organized. The only thing left to say is good for her getting revenge.” The blonde looks at the teenager with wide eyes.
“I-I guess but you know you can’t say anything like that to Hotch, do you?” She asks concerned. “JJ, I’m dead inside, not dumb. I know this.” But the agent shrugs. “Good. Though I really want to see his face.” “Mood.”
Penelope Garcia is the closest one to relate to Gen Z culture, since a great part of her time is spent on the internet. She happily learns about all the phrases and their meanings as well as the newest trends and hypes.
“Purp is sus, I tell you”, is heard from the lair into the hallway. Spencer and Derek look at each other with concern on their faces. “Do you think they are alright or do we have to-” “IT’S A SELF REPORT I SWEAR PENNY! YOU WORK WITH PROFILERS IN GANDALF’S NAME!” Spencer’s question is answered by that.
“Baby girl, crazy girl, are you doing good? Do you need help or something?” The older one asks warily. But it’s drowned in another screaming match. “I TOLD YOU PURP WAS THE IMPOSTER BUT YOU HAVE TO TELL THEM I VENTED WHEN I DIDN’T! I WANT ALL TIKTOKS I SENT YOU BACK!” “YOU DON’T DARE TO REVOKE MY TIKTOK PRIVILEGES!” “WATCH ME GARCIA!”
“Whoa girls, what about taking a break?” Morgan tries to diffuse the situation. “Yes, I think JJ got new pictures of Henry and Emily brought cookies this morning”, Spencer adds.
The girls, who mere seconds ago were ready to jump each other's throats, look at the other one. “You get the cookies and I go to JJ, deal?” (Y/N) asks. “Deal!” Without sparing the boys another glance they run out of the lair. Their devices are still lit up. A red figure shines into their faces. ‘AMONG US’ is written underneath it. “I think we get too old for this stuff, don’t we Reid?”
Spencer always thought he was young. Of course, his mind is older, but physically he is not that old. But the intern proves him wrong. And boy is he wrong.
“Spencer, is there anything interesting to know today?” (Y/N) takes a seat on his desk, distracting the genius from his paperwork. It is a common occurrence for her to go to him to ask for a fun fact.
“Do you wanna learn something about sloths?” His knowledge (or the writer’s) on this subject is astonishingly big.
“Spill the tea, sis.” “Did you kn- What? But I don’t have tea to spill. And I don’t wanna spill anything, I-” Reid rambles in confusion.
“It’s just a saying, Spencer. There is no deeper meaning to it then ‘Tell me everything about it’. You know, it’s mostly used for gossiping, but I don’t really like to gossip. That’s why I use it in a different context. You got it?” (Y/N) explains it to him in a soft manner, knowing her generation can be complex.
“Yeah, I think I do. Thank you for telling me. I really like the phrase. It has a nice ring. What about you spill the tea about all the phrases you know and I tell you some things from my knowledge?” “I think you got yourself a teacher, genius. But now tell me about the sloths, I love them.”
A few days later Rossi catches her doing some weird moves. “Are you having a seizure or what is your problem, youngster?” Even though he tries not to show it, David took a great liking to (Y/N), thinking of her like a granddaughter. Still, most of her actions confuse the hell out of him.
“I’m practising a dance for tiktok. My friends and I worked on a choreo we wanted to film later. Come here, I can show you.” And that’s what she does in the conference room. The teenager walks him through every move of the choreo, explaining the meaning to it and how it correlates with the song.
“And then you move your arm like that. Exactly like that! You did a great job, David! Are you sure you don’t want to come with me later? We can make you your own account and name it ‘Grandpa-on-tiktok’. You can promote your books over there and it’s a way to float with the trend!”
Seeing her this excited Rossi can’t do anything but agree to the idea. Also, he secretly liked doing the dance thing. It made him feel young again.
“(Y/N), you said you graduated this summer. But your file said you are 16?” Emily asks her one boring day filled with paperwork and countless cups of coffee. “It is what it is”, she mindlessly answers, too focused on filling out the work in front of her.
“I mean yes but how?”
“Emily, smart people exist. I know, coming from me hits different, but here we are.” Finally (Y/N) puts her pen away looking at the raven haired woman.
“What are you talking about? I can’t really follow you.” The more the intern says the more confused gets Emily.
She sighs. “I don’t want to leave you on read here. I kind of am smart somehow. Apparently I was smart enough to skip a grade or two. But it’s no biggie. Many peeps do this, so I don’t sweat it.”
“Even though I feel like you are selling yourself short here, I know you are an incredibly intelligent person. Someday you will be an awesome profiler and any team will be lucky to have you. I really hope we will be the lucky team. But I’m still not sure if this is what I should say in this context.”
“Emily, you are goals. This fam is squad goals. I really hope to be a part of this someday”, (Y/N) admits. “I’m sure Hotch will do his best to get you on the team, you became a great part of it. I can’t imagine a future without you.”
Sadly Prentiss has to get used to a time without the team’s beloved intern. On her last day (Y/N) knocks at Hotch’s door.
“Hey, I wanted to say thank you. The time with you and all the others was amazing and I learned so many useful things for not only the academy but also for my daily life. I really had a glow-up here”, she says after coming in.
Hotch motions towards the chairs in front of his desk. “Take a seat, (Y/N). I got something for you. See it as a compensation for not getting paid for your internship. You really did great work and a better job than some agents, who are doing theirs for many years already but don’t know half the stuff you do. You are a valuable member to the team.”
“Wait, you speak in presence tense. I leave you all this afternoon, you know that, do you?” But the Unit Chief only gestures to a white envelope on his desk. Quickly the teenager takes it and reads it.
“Are you serious Hotchner? Because I will cry you a river if you joke”, she threatens him.
“I’m dead serious, (Y/N). Even though half of your talks are difficult to understand, the other half is twice as useful and important. Additionally to that, you are like a fresh breath of air that the team needed. That’s why a place here will be available for you as soon as you graduate from the academy. I trust you that you will pass with flying colors, I had to promise that to Strauss.”
“Of course, Hotch. I swear on my Animal Crossing Island that I will do my best and more. Thank you so much”, she leaps into his arms.
The others watch the interaction from the bullpen, pretending to not get teary eyed. Their favorite Gen Z Kid will come back to them after all.

Friends V
Jaune’s body once again peacefully rested upon the cool grass of behind his room at Haven Academy. The cool nights breeze as the wind blew the grass was soothing upon his ears. Jaune felt as if he could fall asleep here and now, a dream of happier, sinpler times. But, reality seldom gave him such opportunities.
Nora: Jaune!
Jaune: Yes, Nora…?
Nora: What’s this about you saying Team RWBY’s not your friends! Or that Ren and I, aren’t your friends either?!
Jaune: Tell me… do you really think I’m dense?
Nora: W-What?
Jaune: I’ve heard you people call me dense before; do you really think I’m dense?
Nora: A little…
Ren: You never really did get the hint that Weiss wasn’t into you.
Nora: Or… Or that…
Jaune: That, Pyrrha liked me…?
Nora: Yeah…
Jaune: Well, I admit, I am a bit dense. But, nowhere near as dense as… how did Yang put it…? Ahh yes; as dense as a diamond, encased in steel, locked away in a vault…
Nora: You heard that?!
Jaune: Yes, and as far as Yang’s insults go… that is among her more terrible ones. More in context of the joke mind you, poor metaphor…
Ren: Jaune, what does this have to do with anything?
Jaune: Right, so you all thought that I was as dense as a rock… That I would never notice that Weiss, didn’t like… That Weiss hated me. And that Pyrrha… loved me… You all thought I was too stupid to realize a damn thing… Well, did any of you ever think I actually knew? That Weiss hated me, and that Pyrrha… That Pyrrha loved me…
Nora: Y-You knew?!
Jaune: I did…
Ren: If you knew, then why didn’t you ever try anything?
Jaune: Look at things from my perspective; A novel idea, I know… I have never had any, any friends before. And those who claimed to be my friends, were just trying to use me to get to one if my sisters. A few others were… they were just being nice to me… Felt more like they were pitying me honestly… So, imagine my surprise, when a girl, I’ve never talked to, suddenly calls: ‘Tall, blond, and scraggly?’
Nora: That it was an insult?
Jaune: See, you’re not paying attention! I thought she liked me! She may have insulted me, but dammit, it was the nicest insult I’ve ever had. Took me until the dance to finally get the hint that she didn’t like me, hated me in fact. Coincidentally this was also the time I finally clued in on how much Pyrrha liked me. Or as you would put it Nora; how much Pyrrha liked-liked me…
Nora: You… you knew…?
Ren: For how long?
Jaune: Around the time we started training together…
Nora: Y-You knew she liked you, this whole time?! And you didn’t do anything?!
Jaune stood from the grass and turned to face them. His eyes red from rage, and red from the tears fell, uncontrollably from his eyes.
Jaune: I knew that she liked me! Did I know how much she liked me?! As a friend, a brother, a lover?! And did I know how I felt about her in turn?! Cause guess what, I didn’t!
Jaune: Pyrrha, was nice and welcoming too everyone she met! How am I supposed to know her feelings for me weren’t platonic, but romantic?! I’m not the dense bastard you thought I was! I’m inexperienced! I didn’t know what the fuck was going on!
Jaune: So sure it’s obvious to everyone that these two are in love, but did you ever take my inexperience into consideration?! No, because it was, and always has been about Pyrrha!
Ren: What do you mean?
Jaune: “Hi Pyrrha! Oh, hey Jaune. Hey, Jaune, seen Pyrrha? Why isn’t Pyrrha team leader? Pyrrha! Pyrrha! Pyrrha!” Was I invisible to all of you?!
Ren: Jaune, that’s not true!
Jaune: Ha! Bullshit! Everyone was looking for Pyrrha, because she was Pyrrha freaking Nikos! And, I was just the lucky bastard who managed to become her partner! Everyone was her friend, and I just so happened to be there!
Ren: That’s not true and you know it, we’re you friends, Jaune!
Jaune: Like hell you are! We lost Pyrrha and you barely say a damn thing! I’m left all on my own while you two are off helping one another, supporting each other whilst I’m left all on my own!
Nora: We never left you, we were always here for you!
Jaune: Here?! We were in the middle of a fight with a Nuckelavee, and you two are busy flirting?! Where the hell were you then, and where the hell are you now?!
Nora: That… that was… uhh…?
Ren: Jaune, that’s not…
Jaune: Actually, it brings up a good point! Why the hell are you two! You two, criticizing me, about not noticing that someone was in love with me?! I’ll tell you why! Because you, Ren, are too emotional stunted and repressed to notice a girl pinning so hard for you, that she might as well become a pine tree! And you, Nora, are too much of a coward l, whose too scared to see everything she holds dear to her, go up in flame! I’m clueless and I don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to love and romance! But what the hell are you doing?!
Ren: Jaune, I… I uhh…?!
Nora: It’s not that easy! I care so much about, Ren, that I’m scared to lose him! And I can’t lose him, he’s the most important person in the whole world to me! I love him so much that I… I… oh…
Ren: You felt the same way about Pyrrha… you knew she loved you, but you were scared to lose her… to lose everything if you told her… to lose not a lover, but you’re the only person you considered your friend…
Jaune: And finally you understand why I did nothing… Because what could I do… I was going to ask Pyrrha on a date of sorts after the festival… Thought it would be a good tome to figure things out, everything would be slowing down then… But…
Nora: I’m sorry, Jaune. You were right, we never tried to see anything from your perspective, only from Pyrrha’s… I’m sorry, Jaune… I’m so sorry…
Jaune: Don’t be; too little, far, far too late…
Ren: Now what… do we go our separate ways or… or are you staying with us…?
Jaune: I’ll stay… I’ll stay as long as Cinder still lives… till then… I don’t really care what you do, just figure something out already…
Ren: A-Alright… Goodnight, Jaune… Let’s go, Nora. We’ve overstayed our welcome…
Nora: Jaune… Jaune I’m…
Jaune: Just go, Nora… Just go…
The duo left and soon the Knight was left once more all alone. Always alone…
///
There was once an ask that went along with this.
But… it was deleted in a fit of fury and frustration whilst I was failing to write this…
Sorry…

Anonymous asked: I love your long posts which make for great reading and I wish you could do more because you’ve got such a range of astonishing interests. I’m hoping because you’ve served in the military you would have studied military thinkers. Do you think the Art of War by Sun Tzu is way overrated by everyone? I studied him a bit for my masters but I still couldn’t get my head around him. Interested to know your thoughts. Thanks!
“To lift an autumn hair is no sign of great strength; to see the sun and moon is no sign of sharp sight; to hear the noise of thunder is no sign of a quick ear." - Sun Tzu's Art of War, Chapter IV - Tactical Disposition, Clause 10.
Sounds cool, doesn’t it?
But what the hell does this quote really mean? Do you know what it means? Can anyone else tell me?
Look, I enjoy a good Sun Tzu quote as the next person. Only recently I was exchanging thoughts with a fellow blogger whose studying Thucydides, Clausewitz, and Kissinger for an advanced course at the US Naval War College. Even he prefers Sun Tzu over Clausewitz. I can see why too. If you can make sense of chapter one of Clausewitz’s tome On War you deserve a Nobel Prize.
Unlike my very learned fellow blogger, there are lot of folk who don’t know Sun Tzu at all. They can quote him, but almost certainly out of context. As someone who partly grew up in the Far East and even learned Chinese and Japanese (a pitiful but functional degree of fluency) I’m embarrassed (not hard since I’m English) when I hear other Western compatriots romanticise and elevate Eastern icons to mythic status that the Chinese themselves have never done.
Tumblr media
I am even more bemused than embarrassed after having hung up my military uniform for ‘civvy’ corporate clothing at how badly abused Sun Tzu’s book is in the corporate world. In my workplace I grit my teeth at corporate high flyers who mistake a balance sheet for a real battlefield by quoting Sun Tzu out of their arse, and then as self-styled ‘corporate warriors’ work themselves up in a lather of testosterone induced self-importance to crush their corporate enemies into the dust.
Tumblr media
This is why the The Art of War by Sun Tzu has invited a jaundiced eye roll. And rightly so. I can see why many view Sun Tzu as over-rated because many easily impressed people go all woo woo over anything ancient and Eastern.
It’s become a familiar trope to say the art of ‘strategy’ as a science began 2,500 years ago with the writing of The Art of War. I would dispute this. Not that the writing of Art of War was the earliest written but whether I would call it a manual of strategy per se - more on this below in my answer.  However you rate or overrate the Art of War it’s important to have perspective and remember this book is written in 512 BC. Other than the bible and some religious books, there are not many books that can survived thousands of years and still remains a steady bestseller and enjoys a wide influence in military academies and army staff colleges today and even as far into board rooms.
The question behind your question is just as interesting to me: why did Sun Tzu and his Art of War gain such traction in the West?
Tumblr media
Sun Tzu (544-496 BC) wrote the original text of The Art of War shortly before 510 BC. During most of the past two thousand years, the common people in China were forbidden to read Sun Tzu's text. However, the text was preserved by China's nobility for over 2,500 years. The Chinese nobility preserved the text of The Art of War, known in Chinese as Bing-fa, even despite the famous book-burning by the first Emperor of Chi around 200 BC. The text was treasured and passed down by the Empire’s various rulers. Unfortunately, it was preserved in a variety of forms. A "complete" Chinese language version of the text wasn't available until the 1970s. Before that, there were a number of conflicting, fragmentary versions in different parts of China, passed down through 125 generations of duplication.
Indeed at the beginning of the twentieth century, there were two main textual traditions in circulation, known as the (Complete Specialist Focus) and (Military Bible) versions. There were also perhaps a dozen minor versions and both derived and unrelated works also entitled Bing-fa. Of course, every group considered (and still considers) its version the only accurate one.
When I last visited China before the Covid pandemic for work reason, I had time off to go to a couple of museums that housed the fruits of a number of archeological digs uncovering the tombs of the ancient rulers of China in which sections of Sun Tzu’s works were found. These finds have verified the historical existence of the text and the historical accuracy of various sections. I understand new finds are still being made.
Tumblr media
The first complete, consistent Chinese version was created in Taipei in the 1970s. It was titled The Complete Version of Sun Tzu’s Art of War." It was created by the National Defence Research Investigation Office, which was a branch of Taiwan's defence department. This version compared the main textual traditions to each other and to archeological finds and compiled the most complete version possible.
This work was completed in Taiwan rather than mainland China for a number of reasons. Mainland China was still in the throws of the Maoist Cultural Revolution, which actively suppressed the study of traditional works such as Sun Tzu. The mainland had also moved to a reformed character set, while Taiwan still used the traditional character set in which the text was written. Only today is the study of Sun Tzu in mainland China growing, interestingly enough, through the translation of Sun Tzu into contemporary Mandarin. Based on the archeological sources we have today, we are reasonably certain of the historical accuracy of this compiled version that is the basis of what most people use today.
Surprisingly, the Art of War only came to light in the West around the 18th Century.
Historians believe it was first formally introduced in Europe in 1772 by the French Jesuit Joseph-Marie Amiot. It was translated at the time by the title “The thirteen articles of Sun-Tse”. Joseph-Marie Amiot (1718-1793) was not just a Jesuit priest but also an astronomer and French historian, as well as fervent missionary in China. He was one of the last survivors of the Jesuit Mission in China (he died in Beijing).
Tumblr media
Many of the historical problems with understanding Sun Tzu's work can be trace back to its first Western translation in French. A Jesuit missionary, Father Amiot, first brought The Art of War to the West, translating it into French in 1782. Unfortunately, this translation started the tradition of mistranslating Sun Tzu's work, starting with the title, The Art of War (Art de la guerre).
This title, copied the title of a popular work by Machiavelli (a criminally underrated writer on military strategy), but it didn't reflect Sun Tzu's Bing-fa, which would be better translated as "competitive methods."
We cannot say what effect being translated by a Jesuit priest had upon the text. It was unavoidable that the work's translation reflected the military prejudices of the time era when war was both popular and Christian. It was also unavoidable that most future translations would reflect some of the first translation's prejudices. However, war was on the verge of becoming much less Christian in the West since this time was the era of the French Revolution (1789).
Tumblr media
The work might well of slipped into obscurity after its initial publication, but it was discovered by a minor French military officer. After studying it, this officer rose to the head of the revolutionary French army in a surprising series of victories. The legend is that Napoleon used the work as the key to his victories in conquering all of Europe. It is said that he carried the little work with him everywhere but kept its contents secret (which would be very much in keeping with Sun Tzu's theories).
However, Napoleon must have started believing his own reviews instead of sticking with his study of Sun Tzu. His defeat at Waterloo was clearly a case of fighting on a battleground that the enemy, Wellington, knew best. Wellington’s trick at Waterloo was hiding his forces by having them lie down in the slight hollows of this hilly land. This is exactly the type of tactic Sun Tzu warns against in his discussion of terrain tactics.
After Napolean, Sun Tzu's theories made their way into western military philosophy. Many of his ideas are reflected in the ideas of work of Carl von Clausewitz. who defined military strategy as "the employment of battles to gain the end of war."
The first English translation of The Art of War is less than a hundred years old. Captain E. F. Calthrop published the first English translation in 1905. Lionel Giles, an assistant curator at the British Museum and a well-known sinologist and translator, attacked this early translation, and he published his own version in 1910. It soon began to be read alongside Clausewitz’s 8 volumes of turgid German military prose.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before military thinkers were ditching Clausewitz for Sun Tzu because no one could get past Chapter One of Clausewitz’s On War. The “Clausewitz is dead, long live Sun Tzu” school was first championed by the influential British military theorist B.H. Liddell Hart in the 1920s.  Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895-1970) was a captain in the British Army. He was a very influential military theorist and historian, and author of several books such as The Future of War (1925) and Strategy (1954). Having witnessed first-hand the mechanised onslaught of the Great War, Liddell Hart sought a philosophy of warfare based in the prudent use of technology, psychology and deception - and the avoidance of the 'total war' catastrophes of preceding decades.
The main idea of Liddell Hart is to bring the set of principles of warfare in a so-called ‘indirect approach’ to the enemy. His advocacy in his scholarly work of an ‘indirect strategy’ over direct, frontal operations, was a reaction to the high casualties of the Western Front in the First World War. But his ideas were not simply about physically outmanoeuvring an opponent. Instead he pushed for a psychological scheme: to strike from unexpected directions, to generate strategic dissonance, and to induce paralysis. Hart’s well-known thoughts are “Only short-sighted soldiers underestimate the importance of psychological factors in time of war”, “Originality is the most important from all military virtues”, and “The principles of war could shortly be condensed in a single word: concentration”.
Tumblr media
Liddell Hart believed that distilling historical insights of strategy and operations would offer the chance to avoid the costly disasters of modern war and ensure a more cost-effective route to success. He imagined technological solutions in the form of air power and mechanised land forces outflanking and shocking an enemy at the tactical level. This would be complemented by taking indirect strategic ‘ways’. Like his contemporary J.F.C. Fuller, Liddell Hart considered concentrations of air and armoured forces driving deep into enemy territory to destroy their ‘nervous system’. The psychological aspects of this were central, since acquiring an advantage demanded moves that were unexpected, with precise attacks at the most vulnerable points. As the most influential military writer of the modern age, revered and reviled by three generations of strategists, armchair and armipotent, his controversial theories of armed attack laid the foundation of the famed German Blitzkrieg.
Hart’s championing of Sun Tzu’s work as articulated through his own works got a new lease of life as the world gingerly settled into the ice bath of the Cold War. The rise of Communist China, against all the odds having defeated the well disciplined nationalist armies of Chian kai-Shek, was a wake up call for the West. There was a general befuddlement among western military analysts to explain the secret of Maoist success. There was an intellectual inquest in the 1950s and 1960s for some way to explain (and, it was hoped, learn to counter) Maoist military doctrine. Sun Tzu was seen as one of the historical and cultural sources of some particularly Chinese or Asian way of war, and his work made its way into Western discussions of counterinsurgency and asymmetric warfare.
Tumblr media
Into the breach - and with fortuitous timing - appeared a new translation of The Art of War that was to become the defining translation right down to our day. Liddel Hart provided the foreword to Samuel Griffth’s 1963 translated copy of the Art of War. It was to quickly become a key text in US war colleges and this version is still to this day favoured by most of these institutions. We also studied Griffith’s translation at Sandhurst alongside Liddell Hart’s ideas.
There is no question that Griffith’s translation has become the standard go to translation to this day in military circles - that is until James Clavell’s more populist and looser translation came along in the 1980s. One can see why. Griffith’s translation provided a number of historical Chinese commentaries on the text. It should also be noted that Griffith’s strengths was his immense experience in the military and knowledge of military history as a brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps.
However, this was also his version's greatest flaw. Like many other critics I have the impression that Griffith did not really believe or understand all of Sun Tzu. Indeed he would often explain away Sun Tzu's direct statements without making it clear that this was his commentary and not what Sun Tzu wrote. The other main criticism and this one is stylistic and therefore just my opinion, Griffith was also not much of a writer. By our standards today, much of Griffith’s language can seem awkward and dated.
Tumblr media
Looking back it feels ironic of the US military were wrapping their heads around Sun Tzu as way to get inside the Chinese communist mind (of Mao the military strategist especially). Unknown to them Mao had desperately tried everything to get hold of a copy of the Art of War from the Chinese Nationalists. Cambridge historian and doyenne of intelligence history, Christopher Andrew in his book The Secret World: A History of Intelligence, wrote that the theory that Sun Tzu’s The Art of War was critical to mastering contemporary warfare is propagated through the use of a tantalising anecdote: “During the civil war between Communists and the Kuomintang regime [Mao Zedong] sent aides into enemy territory to find a copy of it.” The ancient text, ostensibly, was of such vital importance that Mao was willing to risk men’s lives to obtain it, while Chiang Kai-shek vowed to protect it all costs. It’s a questionable anecdote at best as there are no historical evidence of it.
Tumblr media
We can say that the notion that Sun Tzu’s slim treatise is considered both potent and slightly dangerous - providing the master key to unlocking victory in war through the ages - is a compelling myth that refuses to die. Mao most likely never ordered a clandestine operation to pilfer the text, nor did Chiang Kai-shek give any thought to shielding its contents from prying eyes. Both men certainly read it long before the start of their civil war, both most likely had ready access to it during the conflict, and neither man won or lost based on adherence or divergence from its teachings. But undoubtedly it set the hearts of Western military theorists aflutter in trying to unlock the secrets of Eastern military thought.
Sun Tzu and his ideas in a reincarnated form took hold of the wider public imagination in the 1980s. The 1980s was synonymous with Japan. With the perceived rise of Japan as a global economic power and the changes in post-Mao China, there was a Western (meaning American) search for more explanations. What was the secret of Asia’s rise? How were Japan and China ‘doing’ this?
In Western business circles it was for a time trendy to read it because of the perception that it was part of what made Japanese businesses so successful during the 70s and 80s. Management gurus and other corporate consultants certainly latched on to it and touted it as a way for Western businesses to re-orient their entire management and business philosophy. I don’t know if that ever actually was the case in Japan - my father who worked in both China and Japan in the corporate world at a very senior level said it wasn’t - but what is true is that in the West as the Japanese economy languished into the lost decade of the 90s so too did interest in Japanese business practices, and thus Sun Tzu.
Tumblr media
The idea that The Art of War was a kind of how-to guide to ‘strategy’  was made especially popular by Hollywood in the 1980s. Oliver Stone’s iconic film ‘Wall Street’ seemed to typify the ‘greed is good’ New York capitalist scene of the 80s and 90s. Hollywood mirror imaged the rise of the corporate raiders and junk bond kings like Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken. Hollywood sent thousands of American businessmen off to read Sun Tzu to look for ‘leadership secrets’. This is part of a general Western fascination with ‘timeless Asian wisdom’, the American idea that ‘the mysterious East’ is possessed of secret knowledge. American and European businessmen were enamoured of the idea that “a battle is won or lost before it ever begins”, a saying that reinforced traditional American business attitudes about a winning mentality and a ‘can-do’ spirit being two keys to success.
Because Japan and China were trendy in the 1980s and 1990s it also influenced Western popular culture, not just fashion (think Kenzo) but also comic books (manga) and anime. In this Eastern friendly climate it led a number of popular fiction authors to release their ‘own’ versions of the work to capitalise on its newfound popularity. These versions were more about the pop culture of the era than Sun Tzu. Unfortunately, though popular, none of these versions took advantage of the work completed in Taiwan creating a definitive version of Sun Tzu's text by this time. These versions were based either on old English translations (the Calthorp and Giles versions) or incomplete Chinese sources. However, all of these versions remain popular today, despite their questionable sources and poor quality of translation.
Tumblr media
In 1983, James Clavell updated The Art of War translation of Lionel Giles and published it in a very popular version. This started a very common practice in English translation: creating a ‘new’ version from other English translations instead of going back to the original source. Authors today continue to follow this practice, which only perpetuates and exaggerates the problems with early translations.
Thomas Cleary, another well-known author, did his own The Art of War translation with historical commentary in 1988. Again, his name recognition did much to increase awareness of Sun Tzu, even if his work did nothing to improve the general quality of the translation.
Looking back the whole Sun Tzu as a business model fetish in the 1980-90s was really pretty silly, rather like 80s shoulder pads. Of course, there are some similarities in leadership regardless of profession, but the basic goals and working environments of war and of business are so wildly different that applying Sun Tzu to business is superficial at best.
Tumblr media
So to me the problem is not that Sun Tzu is ‘overrated’ per se, the problem is that every half baked author out there try to apply its principles to every problems that mankind have. The Art of War, as the title suggest, is not The Art of Managing your Business, the Art of Winning in Competition against your classmates, The Art of picking up Women, The Art of Living Life to the fullest. It is, and only is, The Art of War. It is ‘overrated’ only if you expect it to answer every problems in your life.
The Art of War is not the word of God. It is a war manual advocating common sense with pithy aphorisms - and a very good one.
It’s not that I think the Art of War is over-rated it’s that the more common problem is that many people vastly under-rate Sun Tzu. By misreading Sun Tzu thoughts and ideas, I believe many are in effect under-rating the problems which Sun Tzu is addressing, namely war, or the continuum of conflict resolution where divergence in interests of multiple parties extends to the possible use of lethal force on a massive scale. A lot of people trivialise this problem with idiocies like “what if someone threw a war and nobody came” (clue, they would win, then hunt down and enslave or kill everyone too foolish to contest the issue, as has happened countless times in human history) or “ban war” (said ban apparently enforced by throwing flowers at soldiers).
Understanding that war is a very real and intractable problem is necessary to fully appreciate the genius of Sun Tzu’s work, especially where it avoids fixed and easily definable tactics specific to the Warring States period and instead illustrates timeless concepts of out-thinking the enemy at every level of conflict. That the text is still mostly readily applicable or at least reasonably insightful after thousands of years is a testament to the inability of humans to push warfare beyond the fundamental aspects of conflicting interests and continuum of forcible resolution Sun Tzu addresses.
Tumblr media
Still, the particular translation matters far less than having an appreciation that, in war, you have an active opponent who is trying to out-think and counter any moves you make, and having an appreciation of non-dualistic philosophical reasoning more characteristic of Chinese classics generally. The classic symbol of Yin-Yang (and a number of derivative versions) illustrates apparent dualism as being a part of a deeper structural unity which does not permit a fixed division into separate parts.
Hence the difficulty of applying the principles of the Art of War to artificial ideas of “winning/losing” (or war/peace, right/wrong, us/them) as categorical absolutes rather than negotiated possibilities in a continuum of desirability/costs. And it is very difficult, no one should sugar coat that. Humans sort and construct their perceptions of reality by appeal to such gross simplifications. Binary logic is an immensely powerful tool in many areas because it leverages the ability to simplify complexity and then build valid inferences based on fixed premises. But at some point you have to go beyond that to have a more fluid response to reality as it is. Which Sun Tzu does for the reality of war.
I would recommend anyone to read it. At the end of the day it’s a book of highly general aphorisms that effectively synopsise the essential insights that apply to all kinds of human conflicts. Turning an enemy's flank has the exact same effect in 2500 B.C. and in 2000 C.E. and it has the same effect in the boardroom, or public market as it does on the battlefield. Deception and intelligence are still used in exactly the same way, whether conquering foreign lands, or stealing market share from a competitor. It's a book about common sense; but common sense must seem profound to those who have none.
Tumblr media
Overall, I think Sun Tzu’s Art of War is a worthy read and not overrated because in our society of over educated achievers, common sense is in as short of supply as it has ever been; if this book can provide the meaningful framework for educating very bright people in down to earth common sense, that can only be a good thing.
The value of the book then is to drive home the fact that, in human conflict, there really is Nothing New Under the Sun (Tzu).
Pardon the pun and thanks for your question.

Encanto: Oír
(A rewrite of Encanto because I like p l o t — I’ll put it up on ao3 later)
The verb oír in Spanish stands for the sensory act of listening. Oír is used in contexts where you have no control of the sounds you’re exposed to. Oír is involuntary because you are not predisposed to a sound, it suddenly happens, and then your mind processes it. (Via Homeschool Spanish Academy: the difference between escuchar and oír)
Plot is the same until the cracking in Casita after Antonio’s ceremony
After Mirabel gets told off by Abuela, she goes off on her own to be sad for a bit, but then Dolores comes to her room
Dolores tells tee that she’s been hearing cracks for going on two weeks but never brought them up because she didn’t know how and didn’t want to disappoint Abuela
Talk about Luisa, then go and confront her after breakfast but Dolores can’t go cuz she has duties so Mirabel has to go alone
Luisa gets her song, suggests Bruno’s room
Camilo watches them and wonders what they’re talking about
There’s an accident with Pepa where she loses her cool but no clouds form which is good but also not what’s supposed to happen, Abuela keeps her worries to herself
Mirabel goes to Dolores’ room when she’s finished her tasks and brings up going to Bruno’s room
Dolores heard the conversation but is antsy about it (because she knows Bruno never left)
Canon trip into Bruno’s room plus Dolores, Dolores mentioning she associates Bruno with falling sand
They put the vision together inside Bruno’s room, at the top
Once they see the vision they have an argument cuz Dolores wants to tell Abuela now that they have proof that Casita is cracking
Mirabel argues that she’s in the vision so she should have the final say
Dolores argues that the magic failing is reason beyond everything else to tell Abuela
Mirabel argues that it doesn’t even matter if the magic dies because she doesn’t have a gift, there’s nothing wrong with her and there’s nothing wrong with the people of the encanto who don’t have gifts, so is it really that big of a deal?
Dolores is conflicted but almost won over - her hearing is as much a burden as it is a gift, she has to be trustworthy or else people won’t talk and if people don’t talk nothing ever gets done
Finally Mirabel pulls her trump card: if they show this to Abuela or Pepa, Mirabel will be blamed, just like Bruno
Insert Dolores song, about her hearing but also about her family and about Mirabel specifically - thanking her for looking after Antonio, plus other things
They hug, Dolores hesitates, and begins to build up the courage to tell Mirabel about Bruno and is about to when she stiffens
She heard something at the door
Bruno’s room is very isolated from the rest of Casita, and Casita can’t go in, this ties to how everyone’s powers work - their power is stronger in their own room, weaker in everyone else’s
Point being Dolores can’t tell who it is
Dolores and Mirabel make their way down but once they get out there’s no one there
They go back to Dolores’ room but Camilo is there, and he wants to know what they were doing and when they were planning on telling anyone that the magic is dying and Bruno is living in the walls cuz he had to learn that from a five year old who got his gift yesterday
Mirabel: Bruno is WHAT
Dolores silences them both and drags them inside but not before Isabela hears them from the floor below
While Dolores, Mirabel and Camilo are waiting for Antonio (Camilo sent a rat for him) Isabela is dealing with the adults
Long story short she asks about Bruno and gets shut down (only Pepa/Félix part of We Don’t Talk About Bruno)
Isabela goes out to meet Mariano before he arrives properly and drags him somewhere private (deciding to trust Bruno - some day she will have the life of her dreams but that life is not with Mariano) and explains her feelings to him
Mariano is sad but he understands
Insert Family Madrigal reprise as Isabela and Mariano officially end their sham of a relationship
Isabela goes back to Casita, avoiding the adults, and heads for Dolores’ room
Back to the other kids, Antonio arrives and they all work out some Things before they enter the walls
Example: maybe it wouldn’t be so bad without gifts, Camilo would get to be himself, Antonio would get to stay with Mirabel
After they sort that (the vision, the magic) Isabela goes to knock at the same time as Dolores opens the door
Dolores is not surprised - she thought Isabela had noticed something but wasn’t sure, then heard her approach the door
Isabela doesn’t know what they’re doing but she’s coming with them
Isabela broke up with a man she never should have dated in the first place and is ready to find herself (Camilo elbows Dolores and she elbows him back)
But then she realises that she can’t grow anything - she makes a bud but nothing more
Dolores offers to stay with her while Mirabel, Antonio and Camilo find Bruno
Mirabel, Antonio and Camilo go into the walls, Antonio hears a rat calling for them
They spot Bruno, chase similar to canon, eventually end up sitting down to talk to him
Talk about the vision changing, why he ‘left’ etc
Insert Antonio and Camilo and Bruno song (Waiting on a Miracle vibes, probably) about Antonio missing Mirabel and Camilo missing being himself for once as well as them just not knowing as much as everyone else because they’re the youngest and third youngest and they just want everyone to get along (We Don’t Talk About Bruno - Camilo and his misconceptions (I Wish We’d Talk About Bruno)), and Bruno missing everyone and blaming himself a bit/lot for his visions, then Mirabel (and Dolores and Isabela in Isabela’s room - Isabella offers her blessing for Dolores getting together with Mariano) join in and it’s a full parallel to canon’s We Don’t Talk About Bruno: I Wish We’d Talk About Bruno
The song ends
Casita begins to crack
Dolores and Isabela hurry to the walls / Bruno’s space because Isabella might be able to do something
They travel through the walls and Isabela holds Casita together with her plants - not pretty or perfect but amazing in their own right, but she feels kinda guilty about being happy at a time like this until Mirabel tells her ‘good job’ and she smiles (they met up about halfway towards each other)
Dolores hears the adults (“clear skies, Pepa!” “That’s not me! It should be, but it’s not!” “The candle!”)
The group rushes out and falls into a big pile at the end but they get to their feet to see Luisa attempt to jump up to the candle but only achieve an above average jump rather than a full power jump like she was aiming for
Dolores’ hearing keeps going in and out
Antonio’s animals run away
Camilo doesn’t dare shapeshift (what if he ends up stuck in someone else’s body?)
Isabela launches vines at the candle but she loses control of them intermittently and knocks the candle off
Casita shakes and cracks
In the background, Bruno’s eyes begin to glow - he smiles, both happy and sad, and sand from his room comes spilling out over the floor as a vision materialises around him
Mirabel dives for the candle and catches it, but then comes face to face with Abuela, who is looking furious
‘Is it you? Is it you doing this? You couldn’t handle not having a gift so no one can, is that right?’ etc etc
Mirabel is angry - rightfully so - and she goes on to yell her frustration in Abuela’s face as Julieta looks on in shock and sadness
Mirabel yells about her strong sister who’s so close to cracking under all of that pressure, about her timid cousin who hears everything she doesn’t want to and has to be trustworthy or else people won’t talk and if people don’t talk nothing ever gets done, about her perfect sister who wants anything but so-called ‘perfection’, about her cousin who’s like a brother who just wants to be himself but isn’t allowed, about her little cousin who just wants someone to give him a hug
She yells about her Tío (maybe I Wish We’d Talk About Bruno/ We Don’t Talk About Bruno reprise?)
But Dolores stops her before she goes too far blaming Abuela because she has heard everything Abuela admits to herself late at night, and she wants the full truth or nothing at all
Insert Dos Orugitas
With everything out in the open and nothing but Isabela’s fading power and hope to hold Casita together, Mirabel holding a dwindling candle in her hands, Abuela hugs Mirabel for the first time since her failed gift ceremony
Casita creaks
The candle goes out
Casita falls
Luisa protects Abuela and Mirabel because even if she doesn’t have super strength she can still be a good sister/granddaughter
The first thing Pepa does when she finds out her gift is gone is cry, because she hasn’t let herself do that in so long for fear of what it would bring, and losing her gift is a blessing in disguise
Félix sees Bruno making his way towards them and stands between him and Pepa, but Bruno apologises and they all end up hugging
A frantic Julieta is followed by a worried Agustín as she compulsively searches for anyone injured even though she no longer has the skills to heal them - Isabela gently slows her down and they hug
Dolores smiles, eyes wet (“it’s so quiet,” she whispers) and beside her Camilo holds Antonio as he holds all three of Bruno’s rats
They gradually come around to reality, and they look at the damage and the good that’s been done
Abuela takes the remains of the candle from Mirabel and, in an unexpected but not unprecedented action, she throws it into the wreckage of Casita
(“The miracle was you,” she says, looking right at Mirabel - she cups a hand to Mirabel’s cheek and smiles with the weight of relief “the miracle was all of you”)
Pepa starts crying happy tears
Insert healing song - All of You but different, but also still happy as everyone realises that what they needed was never anything ‘special’
What they needed was each other
(Bruno doesn’t even look at his final vision - it’s been shattered in the rubble of Casita, and anyway - he knows, deep in his heart, that things are gonna turn out okay)
Mirabel was never the reason why Casita was cracking - the candle was never going to last forever, and Abuela knows that, but still hoped that it would anyway

yet again im back on my bullshit so... (gazes with mixed feelings at the TV show Firefly) i could fix him.
my extremely long thoughts about my Own Personal Good Version of Firefly (with plenty of spoilers for the show and the movie) under the cut:
things that are getting axed first thing no question:
out with the whole “let’s add in a thin veneer of Chinese cultural aesthetics out of context for ~flavor~” deal. just no.
instead, let’s hire some actors from a bunch of different cultures and work with them to figure out how their characters would bring those cultures into space with them!! and also hopefully bring some experiences with immigration/alienation/travel into it, since the Whole Core of Firefly is about how humanity always brings our doomed and silly and stubborn and unique warmth with us even into the cold void where nothing is familiar or homey in the slightest.
let’s respect our sex worker character shall we?
i do appreciate that Inara’s work as a companion is described as legitimate and well respected in the show. however please stop having your captain and hero call her a wh*re every five seconds against her clearly expressed wishes and portraying this as just a totally acceptable thing
let’s be more respectful of our characters of color and also have some more diversity, shall we?
others have put it better than me but yeah, the way Zoe and Book are treated is very uncomfy, and the rest of the show is depressingly monochromatic. come on let’s do better.
stop the weird confederacy hat tips
again others have pointed these out with much more thoroughness than I could, but the names of some characters and locations, as well as some of the language used to describe the browncoats, has uncomfortably confederate vibes. instead i propose we very Clearly tip our hats to the Alliance equaling space capitalism instead! you can’t go wrong with space capitalism as a villain.
don’t! make! the! psychotic! character! violent!
listen i love River Tam with my whole heart. but you should absolutely not portray your only character with psychosis as violent because of that psychosis!!!!!!! and yeah, a huge part of her character is that her brain got fucked up by the alliance and so she hallucinates and is also a super ninja. but like. she doesn’t need to be a super ninja for her character to work, okay? the crew does not need to be scared of her for her character to work, okay??? more on this later bc it would take a lot of care and nuance to make her character work but i really think it can be done
things we are absolutely keeping:
found family tropes my fucking beloved
this should be self evident. this is why the show is as appealing as it is despite its flaws, at least in my eyes.
malcolm reynolds, the knight in dusty armor
there’s something so appealing to me about what Mal stands for. because at his core is this ridiculous, silly, stubborn, doomed devotion to what he thinks is important and right, a romantic idealism thinly covered by cynical cowboy platitudes that he thinks make his bleeding heart totally invisible. and he is so obvious and entirely incorrect. bless. this is a man who will do anything for his family, who charges into swordfights to defend his friend from a man who wants to turn her into an object despite having no clue how to hold a sword. at his worst, he starts brawls in bars just for the martyr’s thrill of being persecuted for supporting the right; at his best, he inspires downright religious belief from his crew because he represents a romantic and chivalrous and doomed dedication to the right thing over any practical concerns. and then he throws a “selfish” quip over it with 100% confidence that everyone fell for his clever distraction and believes him to be a dirtbag. he’s oblivious and ridiculous and god he makes me want to be a better person because he’s just so goddamned sincere. stupid, but sincere. 10/10 himbo. <3
Mal and Inara ultraslowburn friends to enemies to friends to lovers to enemies to friends to lovers to friends to...
there’s nothing i love more than a ship that’s just two people who know each other way too well, and they’re each the only one who knows the other well enough to call them out on their bullshit. the way Mal and Inara interact in the show sometimes makes me uncomfy but like. the core of their relationship has to stay.
space western aesthetic
i need the cows on a spaceship scene to stay like i need air okay
that sweet sweet religious shit
mal, who lost his faith in gd and a whole lot else during the war. who lost his faith in himself, and now feels he has to hide the part of him that still wants to be good, because he knows he can’t be anymore, and he feels like it’s embarrassing for a guy like him to want something so unattainable. who takes a preacher on board, and the preacher has lost something, too. the preacher has his own past, and his own questions. but not questions like the observant neurodivergent girl, the one who wants to interact with and understand this thing that’s so important to him, but it just doesn’t click with how her brain works and she feels like something needs to be fixed, either the Bible or herself. and Mal takes care of them all, and slowly, he begins to find gd again, not in a prayer but in humanity. humanity doesn’t need to be fixed, like the alliance thinks. the shining imperfect strawberry sweetness of it in his family’s smiles is something to be worshiped and served and devoted to. and he finds he has something to believe in again. (and his crew find that he’s given them someone to believe in, too. and maybe suddenly he’s a saint.)
and finally, my brilliant ideas as to what i would like to add:
TRANS WOMAN KAYLEE RIGHTS
listen her femininity is so important to me okay? it’s so thrilled about everything that’s pretty, from dresses to the spaceship’s electric innards, and it’s so non-traditional and grease stained until it’s not and it’s pink and ruffly and twirly, and she never sees any of it as a contradiction, because none of it contradicts, it’s all just her! her gender is warmth and love and prettiness, feeling pretty and appreciating the pretty and making her friends’ days pretty too.
i want us to find out she’s trans in that episode with the ball, and i want us to find out alongside Mal who just never asked or never realized. Kaylee gasps and squeals at the dress in the shop window and Mal makes an off handed, ill considered comment, and then... someone yanks him aside and hisses a few very significant words in his ear. and suddenly he remembers what the blue white and pink she painted all over the engine room means, and he knows he has something to make right. so he buys her that dress himself and lets her know just how pretty she looks, and when he walks into that ball with her displayed on his arm like something precious, he looks the proudest out of any man there. and she notices. for a few seconds, of course, until there’s chocolate, and ‘nara, and a chandelier—and some horrible girls, but she’s used to that, until—suddenly, she finds her people. a group of old men who light up when she jokes about compression coils and whack presumptuous boys who ask her to dance. they adopt her as a treasured granddaughter, and Mal is beaming at her like a proud dad, and she finds that one of her new elderly friends gazes a little too long at her bracelet, and so she gives it to xem and teaches xem a few new words, and... it’s a good day, huh? it’s a really good day. (of course, then the captain has to go and punch somebody in the face, but it was a real nice party up until then.)
also she and Simon are both transhet t4t im correct and you know it
time for a better River Tam
the first thing we’ve established is that this version of her is not unpredictably violent and the crew is not scared of her!!!! it makes no sense to take a kid who’s primarily brilliant, experiment on her brain, give her telepathic powers....... and tack on the fact that she also has super strength and speed and dexterity and what not, AND say that they programmed her to be super violent. no! no. not only is that extremely harmful rep, that’s also just stupid.
instead!! my version of River is in fact not terrifying to the crew, but is actually the one they feel safest around. River has always been totally blunt, she was one of those kids you could tell realllllly early was autistic, and she doesn’t like being disengenous at all. so you can always trust her to tell the truth and not play weird passive aggressive games or have any hidden agenda, which makes her just a really chill person to be around. also, one of her longtime special interests is music and dance, so whether or not she’s nonverbal on a given day, there will always be some sort of beautiful sound when she’s around. she does have the singing voice of a dying crow unfortunately but that’s ok bc Simon’s is even worse and they’re both incredibly competitive so you’ll at least get free entertainment out of the affair.
my version of River does have psychosis and hallucinations because of the trauma of the experiments, and they are really troubling to her. she and Simon work together to find ways to cope and meds that help, and it’s a process, but there are some things that help.
the only thing she gained from the academy was the ability to hear people’s thoughts and sense the future a little bit. and yeah, that led to her picking up a few spooky secrets at the beginning, which, yikes. and for a while, it was hard to figure out which voices were real and which were hallucinations. but around her friends, she always feels safe to ask “did you just think about triple cheese burritos or was that just a me thing?”, and they’ll always tell her the truth no matter how embarrassing their thoughts are, bc it’s important to all of them to respect her and help her sort accurately through what’s reality and what’s not. and bit by bit, she gets better and better at figuring out what kinds of things tend to be telepathy and what kinds of things tend to be psychosis, and that each one feels a little different. and because of the trust and respect and support of her found family she’s able to do that in a safe environment!!!
trans man Simon rights
listen i wanted to keep him as just a side note on Kaylee’s list but he is my son and he’s important to my heart so here goes
out on the outer rim where Kaylee’s from, gender ain’t much of a big deal, there’s an individualistic quality to life out there, and so if the trail you blaze is the trail of a woman or a man or neither or both, that’s respected even in the rare cases where it’s not outright encouraged. but in the inner planets, where competition and connections and public faces and family names are everything, you have to be what’s expected of you to survive. you can’t change your brand, you can’t be anything other than what your family planned for you since before you were born, it’s incredibly hard to survive in such a hyper competitive environment, and so your very identity becomes just a tool in how to market yourself for better success.
needless to say Simon (just as autistic as his little sister and also very trans) fuckin hated it there. but he was very good at it. correction: he was very good at his very specific field of STEM, good enough to where people stopped talking about how cute he looked in bows and started talking about how impressive his work was from a very young age. and his work had no gender. he could be whatever he wanted to in equations. so that was where he could express himself, and gd, he got so much praise for it, he never wanted to stop.
not until he discovered that his sister needed him, and ran away, and needed a disguise, and realized... suddenly, every stifling rule and prying eye was a million miles away. he was freefloating, freefalling, with none of the charted paths he’d been following all his life... so you know what? fuck it. he’s always enjoyed the name Simon. and since it’s not on any legal records, it’ll make him just that much more untraceable.
and on Serenity, starting over with new people who never knew him before his transition feels like an unbelievable blessing that just dropped right into his lap. he has to keep up the secrecy, he has to make sure they never find out who he used to be, because gd, it’s so nice when they look at him and say his name right, and he doesn’t know if he can handle losing that, not when it’s so new and so important to the person he’s finally becoming. but then one day, the unthinkable happens, the wanted posters for his arrest have an old name on them, they’re looking for the Tam sisters, and... nothing changes. the crew of Serenity could not give even a tenth of a percent of a fuck, and it doesn’t seem like they even know they’re supposed to. huh. that’s new. Simon could get used to that, he thinks.
i’m sure there’s more i could add, but it’s 4:30 in the morning now, so if more occurs to me, ill simply add it in a reblog tomorrow. if you’ve read down this far, i am in love with you. please let me know your Better Firefly ideas, too, bc im always down to yell about this show!!!

Oh me? I’m just thinking about how even the characters who don’t have a problem with Alastair at this point (with the one exception of of Cordelia’s one comment to Thomas that was far tamer than things other characters say about him and that if it was going to be to Thomas couldn’t even be after Thomas threatened to throw him in the Thames right in front of her face at her wedding which was certainly worse) won’t say a word to defend him or even establish to people who do have a problem with him that they don’t
Like we’ve got
1. Cordelia who has never said a word about anything her friends have said about Alastair in front of him when they’ve been blatantly making snarky comments about him in front of her and she won’t even tell them not to say those things around her
She also never actually stood up for him in that one context with Thomas. She just asked if he just remembered that Alastair was her brother and at least she did say well he’s my brother and I love him but she still constantly excuses negative comments about him and never corrects them or says something about their comments in front of Alastair or even to him separately about it
Like it felt very well yeah he sucks but he’s my brother and I love him more than a defence
Also she never even said a simple that’s not the only good thing he’s done when Matthew eavesdropped on her private conversation with Alastair and then showed up with the backhanded comment like wow can you believe I happened to hear the only decent thing Alastair has ever said or done in his entire life when he very easily could have just talked about what he came there for instead of making comments at Alastair’s expense for his audience of only Cordelia who from what he’s seen doesn’t really seem to have a problem with any comments about Alastair in front of her
2. Thomas who used to annoy the hell out of his friends constantly going out of his way to interact with Alastair and ask about his feelings and treat him like a person but no longer did that after the Academy which yes is partly because of how his friends acted every time he mentioned Alastair or spoke to him but also Thomas is out here with feelings for Alastair and staying absolutely silent on the negative comments about him from other people instead of disagreeing or defending him or saying anything about not wanting to hear it
And then even worse, after he found out about the rumour he actively joined in and started talking shit about Alastair publicly whether Alastair was there or not... which yes, he was mad, I get that and it’s not like Alastair didn’t use to talk shit about him in front of other people
But the part that really gets me is that in the Sanctuary, Thomas never says anything to take those things back or to contradict any of the negative shit that’s the general consensus about him. He goes on about how much he wanted to hate Alastair and tried to and about how hot Alastair is and about how Alastair was always his secret and was his favourite part of his trip and he kisses him with no one around but he doesn’t really say anything that’s definitively about Alastair as a person beyond his physical appearance, sexuality, and availability
He basically said hey let’s pretend that no one else exists and Paris was the first time we met and make out so that we don’t have to think about any consequences or anyone outside or this room and then wondered why Alastair went oh your friends hate me, this isn’t possible once they were both free and all the evidence up to that point suggested that Thomas was still years past the point of sticking his neck out for Alastair in front of his friends no matter what his friends said and no matter how much he liked him
(He also did not say anything that we got to see after that about Alastair or to him in front of anyone else beyond trusting him in the fight with him and Christopher but then it was Thomas and other characters talking after with Alastair off on his own when Cordelia got there already again which we don’t have full context for but seems like Thomas went right back into his behaviour from before the sanctuary and before the rumour where he’s not saying things against Alastair and sure he’s tolerating him around other people but he’s also not saying anything in his favour or establishing that he doesn’t actively have a problem with Alastair and think he’s a horrible person anymore (which hopefully will come up with other characters later but at this point we have seen no hints of in what we saw of Thomas around other characters after the Sanctuary scene)
3. James who forgave Alastair and is willing to be civil and kind to him away from his friends and then just doesn’t really speak to or acknowledge him in front of his friends... and in front of other people tells Alastair that he had better treat Cordelia well or he won’t let him in their house or be civil to him anymore as it Alastair hadn’t been treating her well before that point and it was James’ warning that would inspire his behaviour around her
It’s also interesting how there’s silence or that in public but in private he will say that no one judges Alastair for his father’s drinking problem and will talk to him about Thomas and Matthew and giving them time
James seems to think Alastair deserves a chance but also has no intention of letting anyone else catch on that he thinks that even when Alastair tells him how he’s trying to make amends and he doesn’t know how to fix it if no one will let him apologize
Like sure James is over old things and is better than actively complaining about Alastair and being rude to him... but he also lets his friends say whatever they want about Alastair without ever saying a word about it, even when his friends are threatening his wife’s brother in front of her at their wedding
Sure, he has less obligation to speak up for Alastair, but also when he married into the family and then continues to listen to it constantly without even blinking at anything said about him is definitely worse than if he wasn’t married to Cordelia (and also I’m still including him even if he has a lot less obligation to speak up for him because he is still another person that’s like oh sure Alastair’s alright but don’t tell anyone I said that, I’m certainly not going to show that I’m on decent terms with him in front of anyone else)
4. And then obviously there was Charles who would never say anything remotely positive about him in front of anyone else and pretty much doesn’t acknowledge his existence around other people except for that time that he called him pathetic in front of Cordelia which yikes what a way to try to get an ex back, I wonder why it didn’t work...
5. And okay listen I know that Christopher is by no means the main issue at all and that he doesn’t really seem to have a problem with Alastair, but he very much follows along with what the other Merry Thieves think... like sure he won’t say anything against Alastair but he won’t say anything for him either or say anything about the constant comments the others make and it’s very clear in Chain of Iron that he entirely takes his cues for whether they’re tolerating and acknowledging Alastair or not from the other Merry Thieves where it’s like oh we have a problem with Alastair now... oh he got Thomas out and now Thomas is not ac to very threatening him so he must be alright to fight with okay...
Like Christopher doesn’t have an obligation to say anything about the way the others talk about him or anything when he doesn’t really have any ties to Alastair or reason to speak up but he is another character that’s like well I don’t have a problem with him but okay let’s all go along with this group mindset about him that at this point is just Matthew hating him so loudly that everyone goes oh okay we’re supposed to not like him and not stir the pot by saying anything to contradict that (and Thomas hating him just as loudly for a while before Christopher saw oh okay I think Thomas might be over it? which hopefully means Christopher’s going to be more likely to show that he’s willing to talk to Alastair and tolerate being around him during Chain of Thorns which it’s sad to say in this series is a high bar for how people treat Alastair even though that should be a the bar is on the floor moment)
And this post is way longer than I meant for it to get, but my point is that you know that Alastair thinks he still deserves having no one defend him or even show they’re okay enough with him to tolerate him when anyone else is around because at the Academy he didn’t defend anyone else and targeted other people that no one was standing up for just like he’s being targeted so it must be karma that even when he manages to claw his way up to people having a better opinion of him and not actively thinking that he deserves to be hated, those people still stay silent around and about him so that the only things said about him are still negative
And anyway if at least 4 characters don’t have an interaction with Alastair that isn’t negative and that isn’t when they’re alone with him or with just the Carstairs in Chain of Thorns then I am going to scream in rage for the rest of eternity

Aaron Hotchner x Gender Neutral Reader
a/n: as usual, an ajf fic that requires very little context. i’m so sorry this took so long!! i was busy thinking about how to quit my job this week and then KIRA CAME TO VISIT ME (we’re being safe and covid-conscious!) so this took a couple of days longer than expected. also - i see your beautiful messages! i will keep chipping away at them :)
you can expect the route 66 fic on tuesday at 11pm pdt!
words: 4.4k warnings: canon-typical discussions of violence, some mention of canon-typical sexual assault, language
summary: as hotch recovers from the explosion in new york, you find yourself more concerned than you expected. (au!2008)
masterlist | a joyful future master list | requests closed!
“The Angel Maker. I remember the case.”
It’s a fairly normal start to the week, with a case packed and ready for you at 10am. Aaron was out of the field for a week or so with his injuries, but his presence at the round table and the go bag you spotted beside his desk this morning warms you.
He’s back. Not completely, but that’s better than not at all.
“They caught that guy.” Reid’s flipping through the case file, but you know he’s got one ear open.
Rossi’s on the same page, and finishes Reid’s thought. “And executed him.”
“That’s right,” JJ says. “He was put to death by lethal injection a year ago yesterday.”
You release a little breath you were holding. “Yesterday?”
That’s a clear enough trigger for a fanatic. It wasn’t the first time you’d seen something like this, either with your tenure at the BAU or in previous case studies at the academy. It was always a little shocking - the lengths people go to complete the work of the devil they romanticize...
Derek throws a finger at you as if to say Exactly. “So we’re looking for a copycat.”
“Honoring the anniversary of his hero’s death.” Dave sits back in his chair, almost satisfied. You smile a little.
The confidence of a seasoned profiler.
Aaron catches your smile, and his lips pull just the barest amount. You shake your head, suppressing a wider grin.
Funny, isn’t it?
His brows tug. What?
It’s so...normal. And so predictable. You sit back, peering at Aaron over your copy of the file. He huffs (you recognize it as a laugh, though the rest of his face remains exactly the same) and turns his attention toward Reid, who’s still flipping through the file.
“It says here they found semen at the crime scene. Perhaps locals will get a DNA match through VICAP?” When you follow Aaron’s gaze to Spencer, you’re not surprised to see him already absorbed in the latter half of the report.
“See, that’s where things get weird.” Her face screws up. “They already ran it, and got a match.” She throws the file toward you, and you open it.
“If they already have a name, why’d they call us?” Emily’s confusion is swallowed up in your own.
“You’ve got to be kidding.” You look over at Hotch, who takes the file from your hands. “The match they got back on the DNA is to Courtland Bryce Ryan -”
Hotch lets out a sharp huff. “The Angel Maker.” You meet his gaze again.
This is going to be a weird one.
“Wheels up in thirty.”
+++
You lean against the back of Hotch’s chair, peering over his shoulder as ideas bounce around the cabin. He’s focused on Reid along with the rest of you as the younger agent spins a theory.
Derek’s the first one to question his particularly amusing line of thought. “Reid, you’re not seriously floating the idea of an evil twin, are you?”
“No. I’m floating the idea of an eviler twin.” Reid looks dead serious, and Hotch glances up at you. You shake your head a little, and he shrugs before restoring his attention. “Traditionally the concept is good twin and an evil twin. But in this case, it’s evil twin, eviler twin.”
You swallow a laugh as both Derek and Emily look at him like he’s grown three extra heads all at once.
Before any of you can say anything, Aaron’s hand rises to his forehead and his face scrunches up in pain. You place a hand on his shoulder from over the seat, patting him for his attention. “Hotch?”
He hums something that sounds like, “Yeah?”
“Are you cleared to fly?”
He sucks in a breath to cover a wince, and you take that as a no.
You sink your hands into his hair as he tips his head back against the seat with his eyes closed. The tips of your fingers find the little pressure points around his head, and you lean forward, keeping your voice soft. “Does that help?”
He nods, just a little, and you’re satisfied. You look at Derek over Hotch’s head, and he looks just as concerned as you feel.
+++
“I give you a legacy. A breath of life from the Angel Maker himself. Those who prayed to forget me will one day see my face and shrink in fear.” Reid recites aloud from the letter, and you listen with your head propped on your hand.
The sheriff sighs and crosses his arms. “That’s the last thing people need right now.”
“Reid, how does that compare with the original correspondence?” Derek ignores the sheriff, redirecting his attention to the letter and the genius holding it.
You jump on Derek’s line of thinking. “It can’t be authentic, can it?” You drop your hand from your chin and lean toward Spencer, feeling Aaron hover over your shoulder.
“They share some compelling characteristics. I’d obviously like to look at it under a magnification under a better light…”
Obviously.
Hotch’s voice almost startles you, right by your ear. “Best guess, Reid?”
“I’d say it’s authentic.” Rather than looking at Hotch, he looks at you. Your furrowed brow speaks for everyone present.
“How can it be authentic if the guy’s been dead for over a year?” Looking over at Hotch, you hope he has something better than paranormal speculation.
He doesn’t disappoint. “It could be an elaborate forgery.”
“Or,” Reid adds, “it could be a genuine article, just written before his death.”
You hum. “That's my favorite of the theories so far.”
The sheriff shakes his head, coming up on your other side. It’s almost comical the way you’re all crowded around the letter. “Mail here isn’t that slow.”
Derek’s the only one who hasn’t joined you. He’s still happily posted up at the desk, leaning against it with his arms crossed. You glance at him before offering, “Could have been released through an intermediary.”
“You mean the copycat?” Reid asks.
Nodding, you suggest, “He could be buried in those visitor logs - we’re checking them out now to see who visited Ryan and how often.”
Derek finally joins you. “That’ll narrow the suspect pool.”
Hotch flinches again and his fingers press to his brow as the front door opens, allowing the rush of a truck to sound through the room.
“Hotch?”
He waves you off. “I’m fine.”
Liar.
There’s nothing you can do.
+++
You’re with Derek in one of the interrogation rooms, going through letter upon letter from Ryan’s time in prison. “What happens if Hotch actually loses his hearing?” You can’t help the overwhelming notes of concern coloring your voice. “I mean, what are we going to say to Strauss? ‘Excuse me ma’am, if our unit chief goes deaf because he won’t fucking slow down, can he still be our unit chief?’ I mean - “
You shut your mouth as Hotch walks into the room. Shame floods through you. It was more than unkind to talk about him behind his back as it was, and here you were - broadcasting your worst fears about his condition to one of your closest mutual friends.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean -”
Aaron once again waves you off. “It’s alright.” He comes to rest beside you, and you reach for his arm in apology.
“How are you feeling?”
He shakes his head, and Derek leaves the two of you alone, closing the door behind him. Hotch looks over his shoulder, satisfied that you’re on your own.
“Dizzy. Nauseated. Tired.” It’s like a checklist - matter-of-fact and without bias.
You take stock of him. The cuts on his face are healing nicely, and the bruise on his cheek is fading. The bags under his eyes, though, betray the lack of sleep. “What can I do?”
He shakes his head with something that isn’t a smile if you don’t know him. “Nothing. Just keep doing good work.”
“I’m sorry,” you blurt. “I didn’t mean to be insensitive earlier.”
“I know.”
“I’m just worried, is all.” Your voice tapers off at the end of your thought, just a little embarrassed.
A little breath leaves his nose, and you know it’s sort of a laugh. “I know.” He presses a hand to your shoulder for a moment before diving into one of the boxes himself.
+++
Hotch walks quickly, and you keep up as best you can as he informs the sheriff, “I have to advise against this.”
“All due respect, this isn’t your town. I have to convince them that Courtland Ryan is dead and buried.”
Hotch glances back at you, and you shrug.
Small towns. Serial killers. What are you gonna do?
The cemetery is relatively quiet, the sleepy town waiting for something to happen with bated breath. It’s not like anyone would be taking late-night walks anytime soon.
His head tips, and you know he agrees. Nevertheless, he turns back toward the sheriff. “You’re indulging the killer by perpetuating the ruse he’s created.”
Nice. Five dollar words for the two-bit sheriff.
“He’s right. It may embolden him. Prompt more murders.” Emily says, watching the proceedings with a discerning eye. You can only agree.
The sheriff shakes his head. “Celia lost her only daughter to that murdering bastard. We met when I was working the case and had gotten close. I thought we were past all this, but...I guess I was kidding myself.”
The crane starts up, and there’s a sinking feeling that you’ve forgotten about something as the chains tighten and begin to lift the coffin. All at once, you remember and turn as Hotch steps away, his hand over his ear and the other pressed against his brow again.
You hover beside him, not sure what to do. Pressing your hands to his forearms, you do your best to shield him from some of the sound with your body.
He makes a weak attempt to wave you off, but his voice startles you. It’s so small as he insists, “I’m alright. I’m fine. Just -”
“Hotch -”
“I’m okay I’m okay I’m okay. Yeah.”
You don’t believe him for a second, but as the noise decreases, so does his agony. He removes his hands from his ears for a moment. He’s blinking rapidly, looking simultaneously dazed and far too aware.
“Aaron…”
He shakes his head. “Don’t. I’m fine. I’m okay.”
Your lips press into a thin line and you remove your hands from his arms. “Take it easy. I can’t make your life hell if you can’t hear me, alright?”
Your teasing has the intended effect, and he levels you with his signature glare that’s only halfway playful.
+++
“The victim is Maxine Chandler. The neighbors say she’s lived here her whole life. All twenty-eight years of it.”
The house is infused with the presence of children - play structures, toys, the whole nine. Aaron voices your thoughts. “How many kids does she have?”
“None of her own. She runs a daycare. The guy who called 911 came here to drop off his toddler and found Maxine in her bedroom.”
That’s an eventful morning.
“Well,” you note, “now that we have more than one victim, we can compare victimology.”
Hotch nods, and you meet his eyes for a moment. “Different data points should help us significantly narrow the profile.”
“I’ll get JJ to bring us the files on the first victim.” Morgan says, his phone already in his hand.
“What did you find?”
The coroner runs you through his findings, and they’re not much different from the first murder, but there is one notable difference.
“Nine puncture wounds,” Emily notes, her dark eyes roaming over the body.
You’re close to Hotch, watching them bounce off each other. It’s always inspiring to watch them. As close as you and Aaron are, you were deeply impressed but his professional relationship with Emily. There’s part of you that chalks it up to your age - they are only two years apart. They form their own little age bracket on the team while you, JJ, and Spencer make up the younger strata.
More often than not, the three of you were able to keep up with each other just like Emily and Aaron.
“Can I have your pen?” Emily asks.
“Yeah.” Hotch pulls the pen from his inside pocket, handing it over into her eager hands. “What is it?”
You wait as she doodles something into her notepad before her head whips up. “She did this.”
“What do you mean?” You’re not following, and you can tell Hotch isn’t either.
“The unsub. She made this before she made the puncture wounds.”
Hotch tips his chin, understanding. “That’s why the coroner found paper in the wounds.”
“It was a template. The Angel Maker did it from memory, but she needed a guide to get it right.”
You pull your phone out, already dialing Reid as Hotch says. “We need to go back and re-examine each of the patterns. Where’s Reid?”
“Spence. Hey. We have something for you.” You pass the phone and a little smile to Hotch, who takes both with a grateful look.
Emily watches the exchange, feeling suddenly like an outsider - almost an intruder. There’s something between you two, always has been, but this moment is such a clean-cut outline of it. You’re constantly anticipating the needs of the other, ready with a warmth and fondness at a moment’s notice.
She sees it again when he presses your phone back into your waiting hand. You take it and brush past him as he turns over his shoulder to follow you out the door. It almost looks choreographed. In fairness, you’d both done it what feels like thousands of times before.
When you pause in the living room, both turning at the same time when Derek calls for Hotch, a shadow of a thought crosses her mind. It’s gone before it’s truly there, and she lets it go.
+++
Reid’s finally cracked it, and you’re all crowded around him again as he explains what he’s found. He profiled the author, figured out the cypher used by the Aryan Brotherhood, and generally made use of his insane brain. The patterns themselves are constellations, woven into every aspect of their relationship.
You find a smile breaking out over your face as you listen to Spencer spin. Hotch leans over and whispers, “He hasn’t let loose in a while, has he?” You’re standing on his left, of course, just in case.
Shaking your head, you laugh a little. Emily’s looking at Spencer like he’s from another planet. She pokes him and voices the thought you’ve all had at least once. “He’s so lifelike.”
Her comment gets a laugh out of you and a smile out of Aaron. You’re warmed by it.
+++
You clear and search Chloe Kelcher’s house, staying firmly attached to Aaron’s seven o’clock position, right off his left shoulder.
“Alright. We all know what the endgame is. She’s looking for her final victim. She may have already chosen one.” Hotch looks around, suggesting assignments with the flicker of his eyes around the house. “Let’s tear this place apart, look for anything that might tell us who she’s targeted.”
You follow Hotch and Derek into the nursery, noting the stars on the ceiling. The crib captures your attention - the carefully placed onesie indicating the pain of a woman in denial. Your brow crumples, and Aaron steps up beside you, nudging a couple of stuffed animals out of the way as a cursory search.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, just...thinking.” The trigger is as clear as a neon sign, and you’re sure much saner people would break down like this at the loss of a child. There’s a silent prompting as he stands beside you, waiting for you to elaborate. “I dunno. I can just see how someone close to reasonable would be in bad enough shape after something like this, not to mention someone as unstable as our unsub.”
He sighs. “It must have devastated her to think that she could hold on to Ryan by having his child and then lose the baby.”
Derek hums from across the room, joining the conversation. “Completing his murders became the only way she could hold onto him.”
Something strikes Aaron then - something intangible. He turns and opens the trunk in the corner of the room. Its contents pull your upper lip up in disgust.
With a dubious pair of eyebrows, Aaron notes, “Not the only way.”
“Guess that answers that.”
+++
You reach the final victim’s house, and you can only hope you’ve made it in time. Hotch immediately assumes authority, leading collaboration between the BAU and local law enforcement. He assigns Derek to find an opening into the house, while he directs the sheriff to bring all the cars to the front, no lights.
He finds a megaphone for Emily, and you take your place at his left side, crouched to take the low firing point through the car’s open window.
“Hit the lights,” he directs, and they do.
All at once, it’s bright - nearly daylight. Emily starts talking, and you’re singularly focused on the front of the house. The windows, the door, and the curtains are all within your purview. You glance up at Hotch, who glances down at you. He unholsters his weapon, and you bump his hip with your elbow and return your attention to the front of the house
“Go into the pouch next to my extra magazines.”
You can sense rather than see his frown.
“Just trust me. Open it.”
His left hand finds your belt while he continues to scan the area, unclipping the pouch without looking. You hear a huff of laughter as he finds what you left for him.
“Put one in your right ear and don’t argue with me.” Your voice is still low, but you dropped into the tone you learned from him, only half-joking.
He rolls his eyes and stuffs the foam earplug in his bad ear before unholstering his weapon.
“Door,” you warn as the front screen opens.
“Chloe. Drop the gun.” Aaron’s voice is heavy with authority, and the sheriff backs him up.
The world slows down when she raises the gun toward you all, and the sheriff fires. Despite the earplug, Aaron immediately collapses, dropping his service weapon at your feet and covering his ears with his hands. You holster your weapon and turn toward him on sheer instinct.
You retrieve the gun, checking the safety and slipping it into your waistband. When you return your attention to him, he’s almost folded completely into himself, pained groans leaving him. Rossi beat you to him, half-holding him up, but he shifts Aaron to you when you reach them both.
“Aaron.” You wrap him in your arms and he takes some of his weight as his feet get back under him. He leans into you, and you do your best to support him. “Hotch, are you okay?”
He reaches out, finding your arm and gripping tight. You stay steady, almost in tears. It’s agonizing to see him in pain.
“I’m okay. I’m okay.”
Liar.
+++
The next day, it’s decided he’ll drive one of the cars home, instead of taking the plane.
You laugh as Derek throws the keys at Spencer. Hotch steps up beside you, throwing his go bag in one of the cars. Going out on a bit of a limb, you ask, “Want any company?” You keep your voice low, just in case anyone’s listening.
First of all, you don’t want to out yourself in front of your colleagues - they all know how much you care about him and you don’t want them getting any ideas. Second of all, you know how Hotch gets when he’s alone too long.
He raises his eyebrows for a second, but Dave interrupts his thought before he can share it with you. “Why don’t you two drive together? It’ll be a better trip with some company and you can’t stand the rest of us for more than three hours at a time.”
Hotch snorts. “Fine.” He looks over at you and you shrug and throw your go bag in the backseat with his.
“I’m good with that. What are you thinkin’? Straight through, or are we taking a the scenic route?”
Dave pipes in again. “I think a couple of days could do you both some good. It’s been a long few weeks.”
You and Hotch look at each other. You look back at Dave. “Good idea. See you Tuesday?”
He nods and joins the rest of the team in the other car, slipping into the passenger seat.
+++
The car is quiet for the first half hour or so. You’re driving - it’s the only way Aaron can hear you in the car, so you’ll probably nap or post up in the backseat when it’s his turn to take the wheel.
You glance over at him before you hit the state line. “You’re thinking very loudly over there.”
A smile pulls at his lips. The heel of his hand supports his cheekbone as his elbow rests on the window ledge. “Am I?”
“Mhmm.”
He shrugs a little. “It’s weird not driving.”
“Ah. So that’s why you’ve been silent for the last…” you check the clock on the dash, “thirty nine minutes.” You’re teasing him and he knows it, but it’s also loaded with questions.
There’s silence, and you wait for him. It’s another thing you’ve learned about him in the last year. Sometimes he’s quiet, but he never avoids you for long.
“I’m thinking about Kate.”
There he is.
You prompt him a little, intrinsically knowing he needs a direction. “Did she have family?”
He nods. “An older sister. She’s flying in from London for the service, but their parents are gone and she wasn’t married, so...that’s it.”
Still looking at the road, you reach out, wrapping your fingers around his forearm. “I’m so sorry, Aaron.”
His hand covers yours for a second. “Thanks.”
You pull back, adjusting your grip on the wheel. A question pushes at your lips, but you roll it around in your head before you really consider asking it aloud.
“You can ask.”
Your head whips toward him for just a moment. “What?”
“You can ask,” he repeats, the shadow of a smile crossing his face. “I know you want to.”
You concede with a little chuff. “Fine. What happened between you and Kate?”
“In what sense?” He’s totally fucking with you, and you shove at his shoulder.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
He shakes his head. “Alright, fine. There was…” he searches, “a moment when she and I were finished working together on the Scotland Yard case that something...happened.”
“Something?”
“Well,” he amends, “nothing actually happened, but let’s just say she had a couple too many and made her intentions very clear.”
Can’t blame her for that one.
Yeah, and that’s why we don’t get drunk with everyone else. Shit happens.
You glanced at him, suppressing a smile. “So what happened?”
He shakes his head, and there’s a sort of dry humor in his voice when he answers,“Obviously, she was pretty out of it, so I took her back to her place and made sure she was settled for the night with a glass of water and some aspirin.” A smile cuts through his huff of laughter. You’re not surprised to hear mourning in it, too. “She was miserable in the morning, and called me to ask what happened the night before. I may have...very loosely implied that something small might have happened, just to save her the embarrassment.”
He pauses, and you know he’s a little reluctant to be this vulnerable - you’re almost sure he never expected to tell this story to anyone, let alone you.
“The attraction was mutual, so I didn’t feel too bad about omitting the consequences of her…” he searches for a word again, “forwardness. It was - is - something I respect about her both personally and professionally.”
“Did you ever tell Haley?”
He shook his head. “I told her the truth - that she needed some help getting home, I set her up for the night, and came right back. She wasn’t thrilled, but she and Kate got on well enough that she didn’t mind too much. I think she was more annoyed that I got home so late even without a case, now that I’m thinking about it.”
You laugh a little. “That sounds like her.”
“She wasn't always like this, you know.” His voice takes on something a little more pensive, and you settle deeper into your seat to let him know you’re listening, even if your eyes hardly stray from the road. “We had a ridiculous amount of fun together when we were younger - first married, I was fresh out of law school, everything ahead of us, and all that.” He heaves a sigh. “It’s really only since Jack was born that things got...bad.”
He pauses, thinking for a moment. “I wish I could explain the work to her - I sometimes wish she could see it, even though I never actually want her to see the things we see every day.”
You keep your voice light, understanding. “I get that. It can’t be easy knowing that we’re your family, too, and even that’s difficult to explain.”
There’s silence, and you know there’s a tacit agreement in it.
His next comment comes a little from left field, but it makes you smile. “She likes you, by the way. She really does.”
“Good.” You glance over at him. “I’m glad.”
There’s something he wants to say, and you raise your eyebrows expectantly, knowing he can see it in your profile.
“Would you want to come over sometime and spend some time with Jack? I -” he exhales, and tries again. “It’s sometimes...weird to have him all to myself.” He laughs a little. “I almost don’t know what to do with him all day when it’s just the two of us.”
A real smile breaks across your face. “I’d love to.”
He nods, satisfied with himself. “It’ll be nice for Haley to see you as well. I know she feels a little cut off these days.”
“Understandable.”
Another bout of silence fills the car. It’s comfortable. Safe.
“Thank you,” he says, after a long while.
You look over, letting your eyes wander down his profile for a moment. “Of course.”
+++
You stay at a little motel off the highway, pulling over after about four hours on the road. It’s only a little ways back to Fairfax, where you’ll drop him off at home before returning the car to Quantico, but Rossi’s right - it’s nice to take some time.
In two separate double beds across the room from each other, you wish each other good night in the dark.

Let's Talk About NatsuMikan: Natsume (pt.7)
Well, Natsume's really in it now! Today we'll be talking about what lengths Natsume will go to in order to protect the people he loves. He's not a normal boy with a normal first crush, after all. He has no intention of wooing her or flirting. In fact, his instinct is to distance himself, and going forward we'll see that instinct is motivated by more than just a low self-esteem.
Tumblr media
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Natsume has some major character flaws. He’s kinda a jerk in general and is rude and abrasive. He’s chronically selfless and seems to be drawn to situations where he can sacrifice himself for others, which is a very unhealthy way to be. He’s also terrible at keeping his word.
Natsume only made this decision on his own, but he’s pretty bad at carrying through with it. He’s the one who told her to stay away, but Natsume will have more and more trouble staying true to such an agreement.
At first, he makes an effort: Mikan is being bullied for her stupidity and sees Natsume. He glares at her, another discouragement from coming any closer. He doesn’t argue with her or join in on the bullying.
But in no time at all, the whole class is riled up in study mode because of Mikan’s example, and for many kids in Class B, the best person to turn to for tutoring help is Natsume, who is actually quite smart when he actually does the work--though he’d prefer not to. And he does help, though not with any kind or supportive words. He’ll leave that to Mikan. Maybe to him it feels a bit like a cheat, like he can afford to give in a little bit. He later walks alongside her after an exam, like he’s part of her circle, and although he’s not really engaging with her like the rest of the kids are, it’s enough that he’s near her.
And it’s enough for the ESP and Persona to notice.
We can see the ESP looking down on them from his headquarters room, still covered in shadows to maintain his mystery, but his figure is familiar enough for a reread. Natsume has been caught and he will have to face the consequences.
Persona subs in for Makihara-sensei (and we must wonder if Makihara was really unable to proctor his exam or if he was ordered to stay away so that a point could be made to Natsume), and despite his disguise, Natsume can tell it’s him instantly. After all, he was supposed to recognize him. Natsume looks horrified.
So far, Natsume has had to more or less balance two very different parts of his life: a more light-hearted life in Class B and his life as a spy and black ops agent. They’ve been difficult to juggle because of how different they are, but they’ve been pretty separated. Here, the lines are blurring. Was there really any divide at all or was that just an illusion? Persona can invade on his happiness any time he wants, on a whim, and nobody else will notice that anything is amiss. Only Natsume will be bothered, and that’s enough.
Natsume later catches up to Persona, asking him what the hell all that was about.
Permy and his fans aren’t the only ones to notice that Natsume has been softer lately--he and the ESP have noticed as well, and he’s been ordered to put a stop to it. He mentions a “kitten of a different color” who has been of interest to the ESP too, and Natsume plays dumb, his last-ditch attempt to protect Mikan from being drawn into this.
Persona comments on the strangeness of seeing the infamous Black Cat that he trained himself, who he’s supposedly only ever seen in action, sitting and taking a test like a normal kid. He reminds him that he’s not a normal kid. There’s no point in trying so hard. He won’t make it to ever see his family again, so why even bother?
And then Persona makes a point to discourage Natsume from getting close to that “kitten of a different color”. Natsume argues that they’re the ones who made them partners in the first place! And he might as well be giving himself away. Again, Natsume seems convinced that the partners thing was a decision from pretty high up, but I don’t think it was. Here, it seems like Persona is trying to clean up the mess Narumi made before it gets too out of hand. Natsume is a perfect tool and anything messing with that is inconvenient. They can’t unmake them partners (yet) so the most they can do is threaten Natsume.
Tumblr media
And now we can see what kind of alice Persona has. It's a real threat, killing that plant. It's a reminder to Natsume what he's capable of, that his friends and loved ones could end up just like that plant.
And so Persona does.
Natsume is anguished here, because he’s been trying his very best to avoid this situation, but he should have known that Mikan was already in the academy spotlight and his feelings would be quickly caught. It was too late from the start and he was doomed all along to add Mikan to the list of people he will do anything to protect.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
The next chapter opens with Mikan being confused and hurt by Natsume’s sudden new coldness. She has no idea what’s brought this all on, but we do. Natsume has no choice now but to completely try and cut her off. It’s for her own good, after all. If he’s not careful, she could get hurt. Protecting her is worth it, even if it means he has to be even more of a villain than usual.
We don’t see a lot of Natsume in this chapter, actually, because he’s trying really hard to stick by his word this time. We see him trip up a little, staring at her in class. When she catches him, he turns away coldly, but from this we can see that Natsume really doesn’t want to be leaving her alone like this. If he had it his way, in an ideal world, he’d be much nicer to her. Unfortunately, Natsume doesn’t waste his time thinking about his ideals, so he keeps at it, pushing her away.
The next time we see Natsume, it’s after we’ve been thoroughly introduced to the concept of the life-shortening alice. This is one hint of many that he has such an alice, several chapters before we get a real confirmation.
The scene where Natsume struggles on a bed full of pills is perhaps more dramatic in the anime, but it’s no less potent here. It’s like a sucker punch. You don’t want it to be true. He’s ten years old, for heaven’s sake! TEN YEARS OLD! And he’s suffering, hunched over, face red, gasping for air, clutching his chest, next to the biggest bag of medicine I’ve ever seen. It’s the biggest hint we’ve gotten so far, especially in the context of Kaname’s illness.
Tumblr media
It's heart-breaking to imagine that most of the time, Natsume is simply pretending like he's not in absolute physical agony.
Kaname stays at the hospital for long stretches of time, staying for weeks and sometimes months at a time. He’s hospitalized more than he’s able to walk around free. There’s a lot to consider when that treatment is compared to Natsume’s. Natsume is the DA favorite and is sent on many missions. His trips to the hospital are never for weeks or months at a time, not because he doesn’t need the rest, but because the school can’t stand to go so long without their prize fighter. Natsume might be in even worse condition than Kaname, but there’d be no real way to tell unless we got it from him, because he has no choice but to put up with it and pretend like he’s not living in constant agony. And on top of being terribly and terminally ill, he gets physically beaten somewhat regularly… this school beats sick children and then threatens them when they find any inkling of happiness.
There is a bittersweet tone about Kaname’s story. He’s already sick anyway but he will probably die if he keeps using his alice, but he wants to, because he wants to bring people the same happiness that making Bear brought him. It’s tragic and heart-breaking, but it’s touching too. That sweetness is missing from Natsume’s appearance. His situation feels miserable and helpless in comparison, because not only does he have no way out, but nobody even knows the extent of his struggles.
He only lets himself feel this level of pain when he’s all alone in his bedroom. He’s been having a horrible past few days, having to ignore Mikan when she’s all that’s made him happy in recent memory. All that together, and we know that this night was a rough one for him.
The next day, we see everyone saying good-bye to Kaname. Once again, Natsume is completely separated from the rest of them, all alone in the classroom, sitting and looking as miserable as one can expect. It’s strange seeing him now after we’ve seen what his nights look like and just how painful they can get.
Tumblr media
I just want him to be okay. Why is that too much to ask?
There’s some text on his panel: “I want the future I spend with the ones I love to last just a little longer.” Yet another hint that maybe his illness is more than just that. He has very little time left, and very little time to spend with his loved ones, but even worse: he can’t even spend time with Mikan because doing so would put her in danger. Even with Youichi and Ruka the amount of time he can spend with them is limited. They have their own lives and he doesn’t want to hold them back or hint in the slightest that there’s something up with him. He doesn’t want to worry or burden them. And so he sits alone in the classroom, looking despondent and lonely.
And now we know more than ever that this was never his choice: he has to be like this.
No, he’s not the asshole he makes himself out to be, somebody who doesn’t care about others and cuts others off because he thinks himself above them. All he wants is to protect people from getting too entrenched in his dark life. Natsume being this level of a jerk is a method to protect people, a method an adult would have to take.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
I’m quite relieved to have finally passed the point where the anime adapts the manga. From now on, I can focus entirely on the manga. I passed 22k words on this essay too! This whole thing will be sooooo long. I hope it’s an enjoyable read so far. It’s quite fun for me to write.
This chapter is the beginning of a long and dramatic arc. There’s been incidents of people losing their alices. The academy is withholding information about the gravity of the situation, lying that the students have not been affected so far.
But even with the little information the kids have, Class B is full of concern. Everyone is discussing these incidents, debating whether losing one’s alice would even be a bad thing. After all, they’d be able to go back home and see their families. Nonoko brings up a great point, that her alice is a part of her identity, something she loves about herself. It’s not something she’d ever willingly part with. Furthermore, she doesn’t want to leave all her friends at the academy either. Ultimately, the kids all agree that they wouldn’t want to lose their alices.
At this, Natsume stands up and leaves the room. He’s heard enough.
Natsume doesn’t just have complicated feelings about his alice--he feels hatred for it. After all, if it weren’t for his alice, he could live to a ripe old age. He could still be with his family. He could be happy, not used as a weapon by the academy to fight until he dies. He can’t relate much to the conversations about fondness for an alice. From what we can see, he’d be over the moon to be rid of it for good. This is a concept brought up now, because it will be incredibly important later on.
Not to spill about my personal life or anything, but I’m an English major (in an anglophone country so my focus is literary analysis and writing). Writing literature papers in school was a love of mine that I translated to my other interests. I’m writing what I can here about general themes and even visual parallels. I want to write as thorough an analysis as I can. Unfortunately, I can’t effectively pick apart word choices and phrases when they’re translated from another language and when so many conflicting translations may exist.
I’m saying all this as a disclaimer because I want to analyze word choice now and I am aware that this might not carry to the original Japanese or even to other versions of the English translation. (For reference, I’m using the TokyoPop versions for my analysis for the first 15 volumes and then I’ll be using whatever I get my hands on for the rest. The pics I use are from scans, but the main source I use for now is TokyoPop.)
Tumblr media
"Nowhere!".... hmm let me read way too much into this.
Natsume leaves the room and Ruka chases after him, asking where he’s headed. Natsume responds, “Nowhere.” This might be a nothing point to make, but it stands out to me whenever I read this part. It’s a reassurance to Ruka, sure, but there seems to be more to it. On the surface, we can tell that Natsume doesn’t have a destination in mind; he just doesn’t want to be in the classroom anymore, listening to all that upsetting talk. Deeper than that, he really is heading nowhere. He’s stuck there, at the academy, unlike the rest of them who will eventually leave to go back home once they’ve graduated. Natsume will probably die at the school, trapped within its gates. He will probably never see his family again. He is, in that sense as well, going nowhere.
The rest of their conversation is just as packed with meaning. Ruka can tell something is up and he wants Natsume to talk to him, to let him in, but Natsume knows that Ruka has made a pact not to smile if he’s not smiling. So even though Ruka is asking and wants to know what’s wrong, Natsume won’t give anything away. Being miserable is one thing, but letting Ruka know that something is worse than usual would only make Ruka miserable too, and he can’t have that. The bottom of one page has him frowning, maybe steeling himself, and then at the top of the next page, he turns around with a grin to tousle Ruka’s hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't mind me. I am simply crying.
“It’s nothing,” he says with his smile, looking so gentle, and Ruka still looks concerned, but he can’t argue anymore.
In reality there’s a lot going on with Natsume. Later, when we are introduced to Tono, he mentions being concerned about Natsume’s health, having heard that he was making frequent visits to the hospital. We already know he’s sick and going on ceaseless missions, and on top of all that he has to ignore and be cruel to the girl he likes. It’s a terrible situation. But Natsume can’t tell Ruka any of this without worrying him, so instead he will keep it to himself. After all, it’s nothing that can be helped or changed. It’s something he feels he has to cope with on his own. To him, spilling his secrets would be selfish and only cause suffering.
Chapter Thirty
Iinchou has finally returned from his visit to his hometown. He’s brought gifts and anecdotes and everyone is quite happy to see him, until Iinchou attempts to use his alice and finds himself unable to.
It’s a shock to the whole class that a kid at their school has lost his alice. They had been so relieved that at least it wouldn’t affect kids like them, but now one of them is a victim too. It makes the fear much more real. If it could happen to Iinchou, it could happen to any of them.
Things get tense when Iinchou returns to class and says that this might have been the fault of a woman he encountered outside of the school, someone who was probably affiliated with Z. Everyone who was involved with saving Natsume when he was kidnapped is shocked to hear about Z again, but none more than Natsume himself. He gets up and leaves, just like he did last chapter.
He’s thinking about the proposal Reo gave, that Natsume should join Z and fight against the academy he despises. But he’s not alone with his thoughts, because Ruka followed him again, and so did Mikan this time.
She tries to ask him about Z, see if he has any more idea about what’s going on. She’s confused and he knows more than anyone what happened during that incident, but he’s refusing to acknowledge her presence, let alone answer any of her questions. He’s keeping up his charade of cruelty to keep her safe, but it’s driving Mikan crazy. She finally breaks, screaming at him that he should pay attention when people are talking to him, and further that if he has any issues with her he should just say it to her face.
Just like last chapter, we see a panel of Natsume steeling himself, ready to do the selfless thing to protect the other person. Only this time the next panel has him glaring at her, saying he doesn’t like anything about her. He hates everything about her.

Natsume has no choice but to lie all the time about how he's feeling, because everyone else must always come first.
It feels different, but in reality this is the same thing he did to Ruka last chapter. He can’t be honest about his feelings when he’s feeling upset, and he can’t be honest about his feelings when he’s actually starting to fall for a girl. He always has to hide his true feelings, repress and bury them, lie about them in order to protect everyone around him. It’s hard for him to do, but he thinks it hurts him more than it could hurt her, so he manages it.
What adds even more layers to this is that Ruka is observing the whole thing. He sees Natsume’s actions as selfless but misfires on the motive a little--but only a little.
He recalls eating strawberries with Natsume and Aoi, with Aoi cheerfully discussing her newfound love for the fruits. And so Natsume gives his to her. Aoi is surprised, because strawberries are his favorites. He responds easily, “I hate them now.”

"For you," Natsume says.
Ruka knows what kind of person Natsume is, that Natsume would reject something he loves so that his loved ones can be happy. They’re both aware that they like the same girl, and Ruka can’t help but put the math together and assume that perhaps Natsume is doing this for him, hurting himself and bringing himself pain so that Ruka can be happy and pursue a girl he has a crush on guilt-free.
He’s even more convinced of the theory with the tiny panel that reminds us of when Natsume shoved Ruka into Mikan so they could dance. Natsume loves Mikan too, but he wants Ruka to be happy, so he will give up and even ruin his own chances to help out his best friend over himself.
When I say it’s a misfire, I mean that Natsume has a lot of other things going on, including Persona and his imminent death. It’s not that he definitely isn’t doing this for Ruka, it’s just that it’s not as major a factor as other things. He’s mainly doing it because of the threats from Persona. If Ruka is involved in his thought process, it’s mainly a bonus. Ruka’s theory is definitely not unfounded; just not completely accurate.
In any case, it does add extra substance to the dynamic between the three of them, where they all walk away from the moment with completely different kinds of misery.
Before any of them can sit with their sadness, though, they receive word that an intruder from Z is at the school.
Conclusion
In this section, we explored how Natsume has no choice but to distance himself from everybody, and even how the methods he uses to distance himself look different depending on the person. Ultimately, despite the fact that he isn't the sweetest kid you'll ever meet, Natsume being cruel to this extent isn't a quirk of his personality: it's what he has to do. If he didn't have so many things being held against him, he might be much kinder to Mikan, or more honest with Ruka, but he has no choice in the matter.
In the next edition, we're getting more involved in the Z Arc and going into how come Natsume goes from telling Mikan he hates her to backing her cause and going on a dangerous mission with her.
