I swear finding your blog has been a heaven sent. My friends stopped reading ILY bc, 1) long hiatus made them loose momentum; 2) they read a lot so slowburns are not exactly up their valley; 3) they like romance more than drama so they lost interest in continuing since the goal isn’t as clear as a romance’s usually are.

It's gotten such a bad rep as a webtoon for the past and for not being the simple romcom people wanted it to be, which is a shame, because the layers and layers and nuance of ILY is what makes me love it as much as I do. I can't think of any other webtoon that comes close to it in complexity and theorizing, yknow?!

Hey raven, this isn't really a twst ask but I was wondering your thoughts on this misconception in famdom as well as fans in general.

The misconception is Optimism/being kind is naive and childlike. And automatically makes said character who's like that a baby to the fandom.

Which has always been strange to me, optimism and being a kind person doesn't equate to ignorance of the "real world" it's just that you aren't cynical all the time. In fact it's just viewing the world in a different way that's more hopeful, but I guess people find it to be a thing for children.

And by extension being kind is usually seen as a baby like quality as well.

And as an easy example: Kalim is a prime candidate for this, because his optimism and kindness are usually conflated with him being scatter brained at times. Or that he is somehow oblivious to all the harshness around him because he isn't out right depressed all day.

But sorry for my long ramble, what do you think about this weird trope in fandoms?

I think the belief of “optimism/kindness = naive and childlike” really depends on various factors. To use TWST as an example, Kalim looks and sounds like a kid while also boasting optimism and kindness, whereas Rook looks and sounds much older, so people don’t treat those same traits (optimism and kindness) in Rook as him being naive or childlike. Azul and Jade are also “kind”, but their kindness is a mask to deceive others—because that’s the kind of characters they are. Singular traits are just accessory, they don’t entirely define someone. Design, voice, and other character traits play a big role in how a character is perceived; it’s not based solely on a handful of character traits.

Part of the perception also comes down to how Kalim compares to the rest of the people around him. NRC is full of students that are prideful and act on the “every man for himself” mentality. Someone like Kalim sticks out like a sore thumb, so both his peers and TWST fans are going to look at him differently anyway.

The truth of the matter is that Kalim specifically is also scatter-brained and oblivious, so conflating those with his kindness and optimism isn’t necessarily a ‘bad’ take on his canon personality--it just so happens that Kalim is the quintessential “sunshine child”, and he plays into all of those traits well. The “babying” of Kalim is also partly attributed to him being a sheltered rich kid that relies on Jamil to take care of him. This, combined with the aforementioned sunshine personality, is the perfect storm for a character you’d want to protect and take care of. It’s not just Kalim being kind and optimistic that makes people think treat him like a baby, it’s his circumstances and what we see of him that makes people think that (though if I’m being entirely honest, every single character gets babied sooner or later in every fandom because some fans just like to demonstrate their affection for their favorite characters in that way).

For Kalim, I don’t think it’s an issue of misinterpreting kindness and positivity for being naive and childlike, because all four traits are true of him. That’s part of his growth in chapters 4 and 5. As for the trope in general media outside of TWST, I’d say it’s not something truly associated with kindness and optimism alone, but rather how media chooses to present its characters overall (taking design, voice, other personality traits, the rest of the cast, etc. into account).

Mm, and as for the real world... While I can’t speak for all scenarios, the real world definitely isn’t nice or forgiving. When we grow up, we see the world for what it is, and it can be scary to face it. We often lost sight of the optimism and cheer we once had in childhood because that’s how we adapt to and cope with our troubles and responsibilities in adulthood. We don’t necessarily become pessimistic though, we just gain a sense of what’s realistic and what isn’t, maybe more sarcastic or cynical. If one can maintain their positivity into adulthood, then it can be a great protective factor. I’d think that most adults would look on with envy (because they, too, want to return to that blissful and wide-eyed childhood optimism) rather than chastise others for it (unless your hopefulness is just absurdly unrealistic). I totally disagree with “kindness being baby-like” though. I think everyone should be kind to others, regardless of age.

So i like to think that uf bkdk really becomes canon the japanese famdom would be entusiastic.

But the real problem is the western part of the fandom, because a part would be like "these bithes gay, good for them" but is the the other percent that i am scared of.

Because in the shonen demografic is always the mc and love interst girl that is always used like fanservice that stuck together and change these dinamic in a popular shonen could create such a large inpact that whould people drop the series.

I agree with you, there would definitely be a big part of the Western fandom that wouldn’t be too fond of bkdk being an actual thing, but I don’t think Horikoshi cares much about the Western fandom, to be honest with you, and I don’t think he would be influenced by it.

Hi, it’s not just the fandom it’s the entire world. I mean, yes we have a very volatile fandom, but the stress level is getting higher and higher with social distancing, pandemia, school, social media, and all that. People are on the edge all around the world. And the end of SnK just happened to be in the middle of all of the chaos.

You can’t control what other people say, think, or do, no matter how much that affects you or makes you uncomfortable. And you don’t have to agree, just like a lot of people don’t have to agree with you; everyone is saying the same, thinking the people they are fighting are saying something different.

I mean it, you can control what you see and you can control your dashboard, and you somehow can control your inbox. 

1. Block people. Don’t doubt it, if someone is harassing you, or spreading hate, or you feel extremely uncomfortable and it’s not healthy to avoid the things you like for someone else. 

2. Unfollow blogs. It doesn't have to be someone you don’t like, it may be for their content, they like something you don’t, they write in all caps, or they don’t tag spoilers (I  unfollowed someone because that blog spoiled the finale of TWD a few years ago, and I’m still in good terms with that person)... just unfollow. Take control of your own dashboard. 

3. Use the filtering system. In your setting you have an option to hide the content, you can filter tags or you can filter words. I use it for “spoilers” and the names of the ships I don’t want to interact. And, I use it for blog names too. The post doesn’t disappear, but you need to click it to see it. 

4. Don’t allow anonymous asks. It helps a lot. I took it down when things become too disgusting. Most of the haters won’t send anything if they are not anons. 

5. Fanart and fanfiction. The real mvps are the creators, the people giving us amazing things for our shipping hearts. You can enjoy yourself with fanart and fanfiction. Visit the Library ( @humanitys-strongest-library ) and have a great time reading what it has to offer.

1. Do you read fanfic? Do you write fanfic? Yes to both. I am an avid reader, have been for a very long time (in various fandoms). I’ve only every really written for a small handful of fandoms.

2. Favorite genre of fic? Ooo, um. I am a sucker for romance but I love me some mystery or action depending on the plot. 

3. Favorite fandom? That is a toughie, I’ve been in a fair few (more active in some than others) and they all have their good and bad qualities. But I guess the Tom/Loki-ish one I am enjoying immensely right now. I’ve made some amazing friends here. 

4. Favorite pairing? Again a toughie, I tend to read a lot of OFC fics, but I guess famdom wise I tend to enjoy a lot of non-canon pairings 

5. Favorite fic author? All these tough ones. I guess if I was forced (specifically in the Tom/Loki fandom) I would have to go with @maeve-curry-writes (because her fic Your Light in the Mist) played a big role in me becoming involved on tumblr, @tilltheendwilliwrite (her Loki/Lauren series is just phenomenal) and @winterheart17

Yeah you could say I've been going through it...feels like the fandom is dying and I get discouraged. Thank you for being so supportive and kind. Sometimes I wonder whether people still like my stuff. At times, it feels like the only evidence I have that they do is getting more prompts. Which, I love getting prompts; the only overwhelming part is feeling like I can't keep up. I don't want to stop writing, but it genuinely feels pointless at times when I'm wondering if people even want this anymore.

Today I saw a post on fb where someone brought up last year's incident between ARMY and EXO-L at MAMA 2017. The post had a video where it showed how some EXO-Ls reacted when BTS won the Artist Of The Year Daesang and under it it said some stuff like "Don't feel bad for EXO-L" "They didn't deserve it anyway" "BTS are way better" And blah blah blah. Now for obvious reasons I can't link the post because then the person who wrote it is going to get hate and I don't want that, so you can direct any hate about this towards me if you feel the need to okay? Now back to the topic.

For those who don't remember/know what happened ladt year here's what went down.

Every year during award season the kpop fanwars begin. It's really not a big deal. Fanwars have been going on for years now. But 2017 was HELL.

It all started when some clever EXO-Ls started a challenge on Twitter called “F*ck You MAMA” because they felt that EXO was not fairly treated. People from the EXO fandom posted photos of them pointing their middle fingers with the hashtag #마마_뻐큐_챌린지 on Twitter. (I don't remember what the hashtag means and I'm too bored to look it up now lol)

So because most fandoms ,if not all, felt the same about dear MAMA (🐍) no-one paid too much attention to it and some people from other fandom joined as well. However when EXO-L started posting photos that had other groups in like BTS and TWICE, you can guess that the fans were not happy.

After this, many fandoms used the hashtag #엑소엘_사과해 (EXO-L, please apologize) which by then was trending on Twitter, to ask for an apology from EXO-L which had no effect.

It could stop there but nooooo. Then we had MMA 2017 where the fighting became even worse and Wanna One was included where they basically got accused for "stealing EXO's seats" (really? What are we? 5?)

After that, the hashtag #엑소엘한테_사과해 was still trending this time to get an apology for Wannable but🤷‍♀️

Of course EXO-L didn't stop there. After being upset that EXO did not receive more awards despite the fact that fans had voted them to #1 in online polls(even though EXO were awarded for 'Best Album of the Year Award' for 'The War') and the fact that Wanna One performed after EXO (which they found disrespectful) they also started a government petition to stop Mnet's 'MAMA' because they are unfair when it comes to votes and judging. ('Artist of the Year Award' and 'Best Male Group' award were taken by BTS and Wanna One, respectively which only fuelled things up)

That's more or less the important stuff that happened. Now this is not a hate post towards EXO-L (remember I am an EXO-L myself) and I'm not saying that ARMYs are saints BUT it is a post to show just how toxic a fandom can become. I was an EXO-L before I became an ARMY and I LOVED the fandom. Everything was so quiet and everyone was loving towards each other until BTS's first big win which according to EXO-L "Was a charity"

For the old fans here in both fandoms you may remember the old times when ARMY and EXO-L were still small fandoms that followed VIPs footsteps (VIPs are BigBang's fans. Yes I am a VIP as well lol) because BigBang was getting the awards and we were so happy if we got a small win and we hyped each other up and everyone was so happy. Yeah I miss those days too.

(If you are a new ARMY meaning after Billboard pls don't take part in this because let's face it If it weren't for Billboard you would have never listened to BTS. This is between old fans and we don't need extreme biased people here. Thanks.)

As I said before this is not a post to bring EXO-L down (who are now btw considered one of the most toxic famdoms in the kpop world tsk tsk tsk bravo EXO-L) or to hype up ARMY but things had to be said and I said them. You can hate me as much as you want but if you still think that ARMY and EXO-L deserve the treatment they receive from each other (and the other famdoms) and that this makes "your group" better and makes them happy then you can unfollow me right now and BLOCK ME because I don't want toxic fans on my blog.

Instead of hating other groups spend your precioud time supporting your own. I've been a kpop fan for 5 years now and I've never and I mean NEVER taken part in fanwars even if my favourite groups are getting called names. Don't fall on the level of toxic "fans". Be better and make your favourite idols feel loved by supporting them. Make them feel proud of their fandom not ashamed.

Hmmm…..This is a good one. Five fandoms I want to write for but haven’t….

1. One Piece 2.Yu Yu Hakusho 3. Percy Jackson (Book)4. Marvel Cinematic Verse as a whole really (I know I have like one thing over on FanFic for it, but I need to do more/write more/finish that)5. Supernatural (TV Series)

They’re not in any particular order, but these are five fandoms I would like to add to. 

 Edit- added about two secs after I posted it when I reread the ask- YOU ASKED FOR RATINGS SORRY- I’m gonna use the numbers next to the fandom for from first to last (4, 1, 2, 3, and then 5)

And headcanons for them:1. -Luffy is street smart rather then book, obviously. Not very good with math or anything he has to sit down and think about right? Well I like to think that the exception to this is math. Not in a conventional sense of course, but in a ‘hey Luffy I need you to hit this thing’ he could do it.It’s not that he could sit down and solve the thing, but that if asked he could figure out exactly how to set up A Thing and make it happen. Hitting a target, sling-shot a crew mate onto a tiny target with no room for error for a far distance, take out a group of 20 with no line of sight, and obstacles in the way in bad lighting without use of Haki?

Totally doable. 

-Chopper has no sense of shame when it comes to things that would usually embarrass a human to talk about. (Periods, attraction, certain habits, scents whatever) none of it bothers him. Partly due to being a reindeer with the enhanced senses to tell and mostly becuase He’s just super curious and will literally talk about whatever with whoever will sit down to chat to him

-Speaking of that last one, Robin is Chopper’s best source of info on things like that, she doesn’t mind teaching about it

-Due to his sense of smell, Chopper always knows when the women’s ‘cycles’ are coming up and he makes a point to let Sanji know so he can cook more iron/protein rich foods, and have a stash of chocolate ready to hand out

-Luffy is actually really good about having chocolate on his person for these times of the month, and makes a point to hand it out to the girls. When questioned, he just shrugs and mentions Makino and Dadan

2. -After Yusuke ‘awakens’ he has to deal with a sudden onset of pack related instincts

-They are intense and unexpected and this ups the fear factor when dealing with Yusuke by a ton when it comes to people messing with those Yusuke considers ‘his’

-Yusuke purrs when content and relaxed around any of his ‘pack’ and will murder anyone who says anything fight him 

-He also purrs to comfort distressed packmates. He doesn’t even think about it

-The purring thing is actually a demon thing and will in fact set Hiei and Kurama off. It’s the most relaxed Yusuke has ever been (also the safest he’s ever felt but will never ever say this)

-Yusuke becomes very touch oriented with everyone in his ‘pack’ and doesn’t notice it- it has something to do with ‘scent marking’ them as one of his.

-Hiei is intensely flattered about this, not that he’d ever say, due to his heritage making him such an outcast before. This also makes him very, very protective of his little pack

-If his sister had to pick anyone to be with, he….supposed it was better to be one of the pack rather than a fool stranger. At least he knows Kuwabara would literally fight whoever he had to for her. That’s more than most of the human’s he’s ever seen

-He is also aware that Yukina would like that Kuwabara is going into the medical field 

3. (to start with very behind in this fandom. I read the first collection of books as they came out and Son of Neptune but BEHIND OTHERWISE SORRY)

-the demigods have  a habit when out in groups of friends when they want to talk to each other about ‘Camp’ stuff or otherwise things that regular humans couldn’t hear, of talking to each other in greek

-passing notes to each other when out in ‘public’ is also done in greek. It makes the looks on people’s faces when they see it really funny

-Annabeth has what is fondly referred to by Grover as ‘Percy Senses’. She always knows when Percy is doing something Stupid without her.

-After Tartarus Percy sometimes has days where he just needs fight something. Not because he wants to fight, but because these new instincts of his are too much and if he doesn’t do something with them soon he’s going to go mad.

-The gods as a whole live in fear of Sally Jackson, who has and Will Do So Again, gotten up in their faces and lectured them before.

-Poseidon has never been so proud- even when she lectured him

-Percy and Annabeth are the only people that can calm each other down from flashbacks without getting attacked for it while the other is still caught in the flashback

-Percy totally and completely has accidentally proposed to Annabeth with an apple (as far as she is aware) but Percy did in fact know the history behind the apple and tossed it to her on purpose in front of the entire camp.4. -Tony Stark is a very ‘in your face’ celebrity- everyone knows this. He makes a point to make them do so. He never says a word about the millions he donates to things like children hospitals, or the time he went around for a month and revamped a selection of orphanages entirely.

-He likes to make stops in children hospitals as Iron Man, and will take other super heroes with him whenever he can swing it. (usually without telling the hero in question that’s what he’s doing until they’ve arrived)

-Hulk is actually the children’s favorite Avenger. He’s entirely gentle with them, and will go out of his way to protect them whenever they get swept up in villain messes

-Tony has a five min video in which Hulk plays with the kids- lets them use him like a jungle gym, tosses and catches them, takes them ‘flying’ via long jumps, or lets them ride on his shoulders

-After Tony has time to calm down from the Winter Soldier Assassination thing, he begins to associate the ‘brainwash a personal assassin of our own’ thing with his capture via Ten Rings, and goes out of his way to make sure Bucky gets the help he needs (why do you think no one caught on to Bucky moving around so long on his own followed by the move to Wakanda? No matter how good he was, someone would have seen something right?)

-Tony finds he does in fact get along with Bucky surprisingly well after the help. They get into a prank war. It’s a mess. It ends when Tasha gets caught up in it and decides she’s gonna end this one way or another. While in the ‘dog house’ so to speak the two bond over burgers and milkshakes in an old fashioned diner5. -Sam knows Dean is a Nerd, despite not admitting to it, and will always get Dean some kind of fandom related present for holidays/birthdays where he can manage it

-One year, Sam managed to swing Comic Con tickets and didn’t tell Dean they were going, only that they had a ‘hunt’ in the area. Dean screamed when he saw the tickets.

Like a little girl. 

Sam has it recorded.

-Cas was brought along to this, and Dean spent the entire time geeking out and introducing Cas to as much famdom and pop culture reffs as he could fit into the entire con

-Sam spent the entire time taking pictures and recording things. Best money he’s ever spent even if their last names were faked (like hell he wasn’t letting Dean get his autographs signed to Dean)

-Sam is actually a really, really good artist and draws fanart for some of Dean’s famdoms as well as the few that he liked (Star Trek and Doctor Who were favorites of Sam’s actually) and he sells some of it for easy money where he can

-Dean has no idea that a few of the really nice pieces of fanart he’s flipped out over were done by Sam. Sam is both intensely flattered and embarrassed by this

-Cas is the one to tell Dean, since he saw Sam drawing some of them.

Dean screamed.

Again.

Famdom i love you

Switchfoot: after 20 years we are taking a break

Fandom: ...okay....we'll miss you....*cries like 1 hour*...*moves on with life*

I love how ok we are about it, it's hard to accept it but we know they need it so we can't protest saying they haven't given us everything when they've given us more than we deserve as a fan base and family.

It's not a goodbye quite yet but we know it'll get there eventually, it is what it is.

I'm proud of all they've accomplished and happy to be a witness of how they've changed people for the world to become a better place.

I've been in this for 10 years and they'll get my next 10 and more. Know that whatever stage of their journey you got to know them, they made music to get to you and to help you through your struggles and you're not alone, as a fam we all got each others backs. I love you guys!
