well, I can't say I expected the new chapter to feature Idia (metaphorically) going to (metaphorical) hell, getting a pep talk from his (metaphorical) Phantom brother which helps him finally move on once and for all from his brother's death, and (metaphorically) overblotting again to fight his way back out of (metaphorical) hell, only to have his darkest fear (non-metaphorically) come true when his mom goes through his computer and finds all his secret files. but I am glad it did!

also this is all a flashback for the purpose of explaining to our group what the heck is going on (whether or not any of it is getting through is another matter)

Considering Baul (and as default, Sebek's mother - it's all up to our imaginations I guess???) has (and probably can grow) scales, what about Sebek? Do you think him capable of growing scales? If so, in which conditions do you think they appear and how does our croc boyo handle them?

Spoilers ahead It's not up to our imagination, anon! It's actually directly stated that Mrs. Zigvolt has scales too! And Baul mentions that scales is a distinctive trait of their family.

(out of context) I am not sure about the "growing" part though. Probably not? Otherwise Sebek would've tried to do so somehow? Or not, if it's not possible at all. Or maybe they'll appear later? (Because scales on Baul's face do look like facial hair lol) If we're going deeper here, maybe Zigvolts can grow them as a defense mechanism? I mean, it's war in Lilia's dream so Baul uses scales as extra protection? But I doubt it, honestly. Or maybe Sebek didn't inherit some fae traits because he is the youngest? (Most likely). Out of curiosity, Which of the twst boys have their unique magic and what/ how do their unique magic work?

The UM names, chants, effects, and restrictions we know of so far are below the cut. Please note: JP uses the term “unique magic” and EN uses the term “signature spell”; I will be using the abbreviation “UM” throughout this post to refer to it. Note that some incantations are taken directly from the official localization; others come from fan translations that I happen to like or prefer over the official ones, which I will indicate with "***".

Please also know that we don’t know the same amount of information about each UM nor their effects or limitations. I’ve done my best to compile what information we do know for certain though. I’ll update this post as more information comes out!!

Riddle

"Off With Your Head" collars a target and seals their magic away, preventing them from spellcasting.

The collar cannot be removed by any means unless Riddle himself chooses to do so.

Trey

In JP, Trey’s UM is called “Doodle Suit”. In EN, it’s called “Paint the Roses”, which likely derives from how the UM is written literally as “(Let’s) Paint the Roses”.

His UM allows Trey to temporarily override or “paint over” a targeted aspect of something or someone else, usually the senses. For example, he can rewrite taste as well as rewrite “other people’s magic” as “his magic”.

Cater

Cater’s UM is “Split Card”, which allows him to create clones of himself. The clones can act independently, but the more clones Cater creates at once, the more strain is placed on him.

In the manga, the clones are shown to revert to playing cards when they’re no longer needed or damaged.

His UM first manifests in book 5; in JP, it goes by the name “Bet the Limit”, whereas in EN, it’s “Double Down”, both of which are betting terms.

Bet the Limit allows the caster, Deuce, to send back all the damage he has taken at double the power.

Leona

“King’s Roar” turns anything Leona commands into sand. It also seems to induce a dry environment. The UM is called “The King’s Roar” in EN.

According to in-game dialogue, anything Leona touches after casting King's Roar turns to sand. Due to the limitations of the visual novel style of the game, it's unclear whether or not Leona's spell requires physically touching something. If we reference other official materials (such as the animated trailer), it doesn't look to be a hard requirement. I'll be keeping up with the light novel and manga adaptations of book 2 to see how King's Roar is represented, then update as needed.

Leona's UM has the capability to kill (since it has an effect on even living beings); this terrible power is part of the reason why he was gossiped about and feared by the palace servants (seen in his post-OB flashback).

Ruggie

“Laugh with Me” lets Ruggie control the movements of other people by forcing them to copy his own body.

The more people he's controlling, the more difficult it is for him. (It's possible to take magic-enhancing potions to increase the number of people he can control at once, seemingly without negative detriment.)

Jack

"Unleash Beast" gives Jack the power to turn into a large, powerful wolf form without the help of a transformation potion or other outside means. In EN, it has become "Unleash the Beast" to comply with English grammatical rules.

In his wolf form, Jack has heightened strength, speed, etc.

Jack had to train himself to be able to stay in his wolf form for long periods of time.

Azul

"It's a Deal" grants Azul the ability to confiscate an agreed-upon ability or spell of his client; Azul is then able to use these abilities or spells for himself.

If the client is not able to fulfill their end of the contract or breaches its terms, the client is forced to comply with Azul's every command (via the anemone they'd sprout on their head).

The agreement is valid as long as the golden contract which seals the agreement is left intact; however, the contracts are fragile like real paper. For this reason, Azul electrifies them with magic in order to create the false impression that the contracts are indestructible.

Azul is also able to take abilities without consent or without a contract. This method causes much more rapid blot accumulation, as normally the contracts help limit this.

He indicates that he "worked on" his UM, whatever the heck that means. It implies he trained or practiced using it to get better st it or to better understand its limits.

Jade

“Shock the Heart” forces a target to speak only the truth. It requires the target to look into Jade’s left eye in order to work.

This UM can only be used once per person and fails if casted on someone who is very alert, cautious, or are already aware of its effect. This is why Jade intentionally keeps his UM secret.

Shock the Heart is not all-powerful or absolute; in cases of strong loyalty, a target may not divulge the truths Jade wants to hear. For example, Kalim, who was very easy to initially trick, trusts Jamil so deeply that he resists Jade’s demands to tell him who in Scarabia has a mind-controlling UM.

Floyd

“Bind the Heart” allows Floyd to redirect magical attacks, thereby rendering him unaffected by them.

His UM is highly dependent on his mood; if Floyd isn’t feeling up to it, then the spell won’t work.

Kalim

“Oasis Maker” summons a large amount of (fresh, not salt) water in exchange for only a (relatively) small amount of magical power.

Any additional effects of the water (if any) are not specifically stated; other characters just remark that the water is tasty and at a nice temperature.

Kalim says he doesn’t think his UM is all that useful, especially since the development of waterways in his home country has made it much easier to access potable water.

Jamil

His UM is known as “Snake Whisper” in JP and “Snake Charmer” in English (which is likely taken from the way “Snake Whisper” is literally written as “Snake Charmer” in the original JP).

This spell lets Jamil hypnotize people and make them follow his commands. His targets must make eye contact for him in order for Snake Whisper to work.

The more a target resists Jamil’s UM, the more target will hurt until they finally succumb to the spell.

Long-term use and/or controlling multiple people at once can cause more rapid blot accumulation.

"Fairest One of All" lets Vil curse any item he touches and to set the conditions to break that curse. These conditions are immovable and, once set, not even Vil can lift the curse.

Rook

In EN, Rook's UM is "Arrow Afar". The original name for JP is "I See You". This is a small, slight (and therefore hard to notice or gauge as dangerous) spell that is cast upon targets. He can then pinpoint their exact location, regardless of distance.

If the tagged item or person has entered a zone which blocks off magic, then Rook cannot track their location.

Epel

In JP, Epel's UM is "Sleep Kiss". In EN, it was changed to "Crimson Slumber". This lets Epel conjure enchanted glass coffins to contain people. Once inside, his targets fall into a deep sleep.

The coffins can be powerful barriers to protect others.

Epel manifests his UM in book 6; Rook helps guide him in using it.

Idia

"Gate to Underworld" allows Idia to open and close the gateway to the "Underworld"/Tartarus which is house in STYX HQ. It is written in EN as "Gate to the Underworld". The Underworld holds many dangerous Phantoms which the facility researches.

It is implied that Idia’s UM is hereditary to the Shroud family.

First use of UM: 6-68 of the main story, though technically Idia may have used it in 6-54 to let OG!Ortho out of Tartarus (we don’t get to see it explicitly being used).

Ortho

No information available yet; Ortho has stated that he cannot use magic, so it’s unlikely that he can have a UM at all.

UPDATE: Ortho confirms in book 7 he does not have a UM and cannot develop one. However, what makes him "unique" is his robotic nature; he is able to transfer his consciousness to new vessels.

Malleus

“Fae of Maleficence” summons thorns which causes all living beings in its area of effect to fall into a deep slumber. (Ortho speculates that people, if left in this state, will have their bodies deteriorate.) In EN, the name was changed to “Fae Maleficence”.

Malleus's UM also creates thorns which allow him absolute control of whatever is contained inside of the space the thorns preoccupy. This includes stopping time within the area. Previously, Malleus was also seen stopping time in the event Endless Halloween Night. However, it's not known whether this occurred because of his UM or not.

It is possible for Malleus to manipulate the sleepers’ dreams and to glimpse into them.

The dreams can run by themselves, pulling reference information from each individual dreamer's memories and desires. If the dreamer tries to wake up, the dream will do everything in its power to keep the dreamer asleep.

It may be difficult for Malleus to enter one’s dream if the dream takes place in a period where he does not exist (such as not yet being born out of his egg) or if he does not understand certain concepts (like technology). This is because magic requires imagination, and it is hard for Malleus to imagine particular scenarios.

"Far Cry Cradle" allows Lilia to view the memories associated with an object by touching it.

Silver

Bear with me, Silver's UM has like a million and one parts to it...

"Meet in a Dream" essentially allows Silver to hop between peoples’ dream worlds. It can only be used when he himself is asleep and when he is aware he is dreaming.

“Dreamways” are transitional places between dreams. These dreamways look like a softly colored sky with birds flying through them.

Silver cannot control whose dream he goes to, although he has noted that it tends to be people whom he has a strong bond with, such as Lilia or Sebek. It's not clear how he is able to walk in Mickey's dream, as Silver doesn't seem to be familiar with him.

The dreamer is indicated by a shining white bird that flies around them. Silver must stay close to the dreamer or else he will risk falling deeper into sleep.

He can only leave the dream when the dreamer wakes up (thus dissolving the dream world) or if he uses his UM to hop into another dream.

The dreamer can be woken by a large shock, whether physical or emotional.

Sebek

"Living Bolt" turns Sebek’s entire body into lightning. He can use that magic to attack and to travel very quickly.

However, the spell will damage his body with use.

Sebek reports developing this UM when Silver enrolled at NRC and when Sebek was training by himself. He wanted to be able to rush to Malleus’s side at a moment’s notice

Sebek says this is the first time he's using his UM and that he hasn't fully mastered it yet. He had not intended to use it until he has mastered it.

Che’nya

Che’nya’s UM allows him to turn himself (whether in whole or in parts) invisible.

We don’t yet know the name of the UM or the incantation for it.

Rollo

“Dark Fire” envelops Rollo’s entire body in fire. He can manipulate this fire as he likes, and the flames grow more powerful the more negative feelings there are present.

Fellow

“Life is Fun” makes a target more optimistic and happy. They are then more susceptible to being manipulated by Fellow.

This UM is notable as the only one so far with an incantation spoken in English instead of in Japanese.

The spell has no effect on people who are already very optimistic like Kalim. It also doesn’t work if Fellow tries convincing the target to do something they would never considering doing “from the bottom of their heart”.

The spell doesn’t work on heavily guarded people or people that recently underwent a traumatic event.

Reading the new twst ep. 7 story update reminded me of how much I love when games that don’t have as much time to explore the story on screen (like most mobile games) make time ambiguous sometimes. Like, I know the fanfiction girlies can do a lot with that off screen time and it lets the fandom explore so many unique creative avenues and points of view because there’s theoretically as much or as little time there as you want. A lot of time writers on mobile games don’t have the time, budget, or medium flexibility needed for some story beats, and frankly most of the time I prefer the fandom gets to fill it in with the time and talent they have instead of getting half-assed attempts at packing large timeframes into small story segments, or vice versa. With most mediums I prefer the author give us stuff over getting the fans to make it interesting, but with the way the mobile game market hamstrings creators, it’s more understandable there.

For example, in Twst ep. 7, the map makes it look like a long distance between the meeting Lillia and the original fort we were going for. Because of that, plus how time isn’t flowing right now and it’s implied we’re traveling by foot, it could’ve theoretically been weeks or months or more to us of fighting in this war with the Diasomnia boys. Think of the angst potential, after all, you’re traveling in a war zone together, there’s gotta be some trauma forming there eventually, and you’re the only ones who can talk each other through the big emotions of Bawl and Lillia too. Or the fluff of forming cuddle piles because these are the only familiar people around and the Dia boys and Yuu are still just kids. Of Yuu, Silver, and Sebek developing habits around the tense traveling of potential battlegrounds and relying on each other in a fight and to patch each other up.

Or the bittersweet understanding upon coming back that these people have a bigger bond than before. Ace and Deuce realizing the sleepy kid and the loud kid from Diasomnia know Yuu almost better than they do. Malleus realizing his bff/crush/squish is now closer to his guards than to him because of *his* Overblot. Lillia feeling guilty about not waking up sooner and saving them from his dreams of war, when he was a man he no longer feels as fond for. Ortho feeling guilty about not waking them all up easier because maybe then his sensors wouldn’t see their heart rates and adrenaline rise when they heard clanging metal.

Twisted Wonderland Thoughts and Theories #1

I’m here with some thoughts and theories about the new Diasomnia episode 7 chapters!

This update contains some of the most unsettling chapters of the game. It just made me shudder all over.

Well, I don’t want to give too many spoilers up here.

So, as always I’ll put everything under a cut!

This update is just crazy!

It’s starts of all lighthearted and then becomes DARK at the end.

I’ve been trying not to cry but it was really hard-

As you all probably know by now, Malleus is my favorite character and I feel really connected to him.

It kind of feels like he’s the fictional depiction of my personality and me as a person. So seeing him snap and lose it, hit home really strongly. It was really hard for me to not feel like I could see myself in his shoes.

The way he screamed at Lillia in chapter 37 and told him “I WON’T HAVE TO LOSE YOU!!”, made me cry.

He sees Lillia as family and a friend. He’s not afraid of him or who he is. He sees beyond the scary exterior that Malleus can’t get rid of.

Malleus is attached to that. He’s attached to anyone that can see beyond his cold, scary exterior.

He could have refused being anyone’s friend at any time and he wouldn’t have been attached to anyone.

Right now, Malleus knows that those close to him have not hurt him in any way. So to him, it’s scary if they suddenly leave and that’s why he acted so rashly.

I’ll give a bit of an INFJ personality example, as I think he is one. His choices in this update make it clearer that he is, indeed, an INFJ.

INFJs don’t usually lose people but, people lose them. Let me explain: If I (an INFJ) befriend someone or get to know someone that later hurts me, I won’t make a fuss or fight. I would leave silently and have that person regret what they did. However, we only leave if we no longer see a solution and no longer care. If we fight and cry, we see a glimpse of hope and we still care. That can change at anytime though.

INFJs don’t like losing people they care about. We over think it and make ourselves feel like we wronged the person that left, even if it wasn’t our fault. We try to do anything we can to make our loved ones stay by our side. Loss hurts and it hurts much more when there are regrets involved as well as overthinking.

This is exactly what Malleus did in this chapter, he did what he could to make his loved ones stay. It might not be morally right but, he did the thing he found was within his power.

That is what made me emotional. He did exactly what I right now would say that I wouldn’t do and that it’s fictional, I don’t have such power. But when I think about it, if I were him, I would have done the same, if it was the only thing I could do. He’s scared of loss, he’s scared of being truly lonely. If I were in his shoes, I would have done the same. No matter how much I knew that they would hate me when they got back. I would believe that what I did was for them, even if it was selfish, I would believe that I did the right thing.

I think this is how Malleus feels and I understand that not everyone agrees with what he did. I am not trying to justify it. All I know and believe is that he acted on his fears. He lost his parents and now the person he saw as a friend and a family figure is going to leave him as well? Well, I think any of us would have snapped and gone mad.

I’ve also suffered a lot of losses of dear people. This is probably why I feel so much sympathy for Malleus. It’s much worse if you can do something and don’t do it. Even if it’s not the ideal solution. Well he did what he did so there’s no way of changing that.

This brings us to the second part of this post. The theory part. (Even if we had a bit of theory above too)

We’ll also be discussing his overblot form. So first a screenshot from the game. (I’m also looking at the full overblot image)

I’ll just say it. He looks absolutely stunning and I would like to know where he found this stylish outfit-

Really-

Mhm-

The blot tears are dripping down much further than in the other overblot designs. They’re basically telling us that he’s been holding back his pain for hundreds of years.

The thorns symbolize the shackles of his position and power and everything he’s had to suppress.

He also has a belt over the thorn corset, it’s fastened in a way that makes it feel hasty. It feels like a symbol for hastily suppressed emotions, that are on the verge of erupting.

His horns are glowing with the same color that his powers have. His tail does the same.

He has blot markings on his face and his hand that look like dragon scales.

The markings on his face and the slicked back hair reminds me of Maleficent’s image with her head piece and horns.

The ends of his outfit are torn but with a spiky thorn like look on them. Even his leggings and underskirt(?) have spikes and look like thorns. His cape has green thorns as well.

He has this thorn harness(?) over his chest and a collar metal like tight around his neck.

His whole overblot outfit gives off the impression of symbolizing restraint and suppressed emotions.

No matter how much he smiles or laughs, there is still this coldness to it. It’s like he’s numb to his emotions.

We’ll probably get to know soon enough.

His shadow looked a lot like Maleficent in this image below:

Now for another image.

This basically shows how strong Malleus is. His powers put a whole country/island to sleep. I think he would have been able to do much more damage had he wanted to. He’s too strong.

“You will be the heroes of a fairy tale.”

This makes it seem as if Malleus is telling them to fight him. Or that he’s giving them a second chance to save themselves from this fate. Or he’s not talking to the characters but to the people playing the role of the main character. To us. He’s telling us to be the hero of this story and save ourselves and the others.

There have also been these theories about the Yuu-verse and that there have been a lot of Yuus that have failed at stopping Malleus. Maybe there is a hidden chapter that unlocks after you defeat Malleus in the battle. But it’s impossible to win so I don’t know how this will go.

I think he might be alluding to The Sleeping Beauty trope and how they will be heroes, either saving each other or getting saved. He might also be alluding to the Maleficent movies and how she was portrayed as a hero instead of a villain in that story. He’s basically talking about the story of Twisted Wonderland as well, and how it’s making villains show heroic characteristics. It’s an amazing line and just makes the gears turn in my head.

If you look closely here, the logo is rippling like water.

The fact that Malleus started singing Once Upon a Dream at this moment makes it feel as if you’re being in a dream. The rippling images in movies and the sound of a harp playing always meant that the character was getting a flashback or dreaming in old movies. This might indicate that the game is going to start over until we save everyone from Malleus or that we’re all goners now.

I have a feeling that Idia or Maleficia (Malleus’s grandma) or both might help us out of this situation.

Or we’ll get a super out of the box surprise with all of the Yuus arriving at the door from different universes to help us (the current Yuu) defeat Malleus. That would be epic.

Or a more ultra super maximum universe can not comprehend out of the box surprise where the great 7 come and save us with Maleficent as the leader. That would be epic beyond belief.

Or all of the above.

I’d be happy with anything as long as it makes the wait worth it.

This part at the end of chapter 37 made me shudder because it was really unsettling.

Malleus is humming to Once Upon a Dream and it sounds hypnotic and scary. It almost sounds more like the Maleficent movie version more than The Sleeping Beauty version. The first is much darker and sounds scary while the latter is upbeat and sounds happy and sweet.

It feels like we’re getting an early ending, like a game over after meeting the final boss. It’s like we’re starting the game again. Like we woke up from an eternal sleep, to try our luck with saving the world again.

It just feels melancholy and like dejavu, like losing your memories but remembering the feelings you had associated with them. It’s strange and it’s a great thing that this game has accomplished. You don’t get this feeling easily in real life. This game should get awards and worldwide recognition for the amazing work put into it.

Do you have any thots yours willing to share on time loop theory?

Erm. The thing about me... is that I'm kind of a dummy -w- This entire post will have spoilers so be warned.

This thread by YuuRei20 on twitter explains what is understood so far about the theory. But I also think I'm one of, if not, THE FIRST person to ever think that Jamil is aware of the time loop as well as Leona. In my mind, there are 5 characters that are aware of the loop. That being: Leona (the thread explains that evidence), Malleus (This one is a little harder to explain depending on what you're going with for the explanation of this theory. I will elaborate later), Jamil (super important and what I was talking about earlier), Crowley (the thread also explains this somewhat), and Yuu or the MC/Prefect (this one is also difficult to find the evidence for but I do 100% believe that in some way, outside of our knowledge as players, that Yuu is aware that this has happened before.)

The time loop theory has existed for as long as the game has, so there's a million different ideas of how or why it might be happening. The thread posits that "Everything we know is repeating in a loop in an attempt to either stop something from happening or to make something happen." and that the game's catch copy of “I will show you a true happy ending” implies that there HAVE been bad endings to this story that Someone is trying to prevent. If your explanation for the time loop is as the thread suggests then maaaaaaaybe Malleus might be none the wiser... But If you have read chapter 7's currently released episodes... Your explanation for the time loop could be a teensy bit different.

In chapter 7: Ruler of the Abyss, we go into it knowing that Malleus is going to most-likely be the arc villain, as aside from 1 chapter before, the dorm leader is always the arc villain. One of the first scenes Yuu has with Malleus in this chapter is Yuu excitedly telling Malleus that he's working on a way to return to his own world. Malleus asks him if he would "stay in this world (Twisted Wonderland) if there was a way for him to see his loved ones without having to go home" To which Yuu tells him that he would like to return to his own world. This is the end of that scene.

We also learn that Lilia, Malleus' close friend and caregiver is losing his magic and is going to pass away "soon" which could be anything from a few months to 60+ years given that he's lived 700~ years. He also says that he will be leaving the school and moving to a country implied to be very far away from Briar Valley, where Malleus and Lilia's actual literal son, Silver, live. This information deeply troubles Malleus as well as SIlver.

The combined stress of his dear human friend, Yuu, and his lifelong caregiver, going away from him (as well as his tamagotchi dying) leads Malleus into snapping and putting everyone Lilia had invited to his going away party into a "death-like sleep" (lol) before entirely overblotting and saying that "1000 years will pass in the blink of an eye" (lolololol)

Those events are key in the idea that Malleus is aware of the timeloop because he is responsible for it because he trapped everyone in dreams of idealistic school days. I feel like this theory and the theory discussed in the thread clash a bit but it makes so much sense to me. And more importantly... It heavily backs up my belief that Jamil is aware of the time loop.

In the song performed by the Night Raven College team during the VDC, most, if not all, of the lines sung by other characters are essentially in the vein of "We are so good at singing. We are perfect. You cannot possibly beat us. *does a dance*" But Jamil gets a solo. And in this solo, he says a few interesting things.

It's pretty surface level stuff to understand, but what roots Jamil to knowing about the time loop is that these lines are reminiscent of some events that haven't happened yet. "The thorns that entwine, the clock that starts to turn." I'm disturbed, so naturally this feels like an obvious reference to Malleus (the prince of thorns who covers the whole island in thorns and puts everyone to sleep) and time, clocks, you know.

The "watchful gaze" being referred too could be Malleus' eyes watching his "friends" he put to sleep or (in my own sick twisted mind) could refer to the chapter AFTER the VDC. The Ignihyde chapter is called, get this, The Watchman of The Underworld. If you think its that deep, Jamil is talking about two arc villains that are only villains in the future.

"Silently and faintly torn apart, and becoming foolish" could refer to any of the overblots but I think it hits with Malleus because he doesn't try to resolve his problem in any healthy way. He witnesses Silver crying because he is losing his father, Silver who also did not voice his emotions to the person they concern, and he "becomes foolish". Combining this event with seeing his tamagotchi die and become an egg again, in his fantastical mind, made it clear. He wasn't going to tell Lilia or Yuu that he didn't want them to go away or that they were truly important to him. He was going to make them and all the people he wanted to be friends with stay with him in fantasy-like school days.

In my sick mind, I read the "praying not to be saved" as "I would rather they let me die overblotting than to have to keep living through all of this". Which an hour ago, I was like Woah This is Jamil talking about himself here 😲, but now I understand that it might be in reference to Idia intentionally overblotting in an attempt to end his life. Many hints in chapter 6 support this, such as Idia seemingly forcing his overblot despite using no magic and having no blot accumulation scenes, his attempt to fall into the underworld with Ortho when he's defeated, as well as just KNOWING he's extremely depressed.

Jamil also is... Like... Super aggressive to Kalim during his own overblot and he speaks to him rudely and says that they were never friends, but in any scene you see of the two of them after this point, they seem as friendly as ever. In the Happy Beans Day event, despite being on opposing teams and taking place after Jamil seemingly admitted his hatred of Kalim, he cooks for his team. He heats up and prepares the food he made that morning for Kalim's team. That's not something you would do for a guy you hate, in my opinion.

Time loops are often used in stories to develop a characters values. If the same period of time repeats over and over, you are probably gonna go a little crazy. But... Jamil is not a violent person, he's not the kind of guy who would realize he's in a time loop and start hurting people. Yes, he was upset with the Asim family, but Kalim is still someone he has known his whole life. He has to continue his cycle of being the villain and overblotting because he can't tell Kalim seriously that he knows something foul is happening. Call Jamil two-faced all you want, but I think in the theory that he's aware of the time loop, he has to hold onto something constant like Kalim's friendship, Kalim in general, and that's why he is so soft on him. This is some My Little Pony ass shit I'm typing but I'm for real guysssss. In Jamil's case, he can't really do anything to prevent time from repeating besides get stronger for a threat he's yet to see the end of, so he survives, and clings to any comfort he can get in consistency. (My sick head)

I have more thoughts on the matter but I can't figure out a way to word them that isn't straight up gibberish. I love you. Understand my post now.

★D.GRAY MAN ★ ANIME & MANGA RECCOMENDATIONS

So, you all knows how much I love D.Gray-Man (forever and ever and ever) but when you get at the point where you pretty much watched and rewatched the entire series - original & hallow and all - as well as read and re-read the manga you’re gonna need a breather to process all the emotions but yet still can’t seem to let go. Yet at the same time, ya need a breather with something familiar yet something new. Yule gotchu, fam (＾＾)ｂI’ve compiled a few recommendations that might match your tastes. 

The few below would probably have elements from DGM that you might like and find intriguing and probably fill up the time until Hoshino reveal more to us.

№ 1 — CLAYMORE 

RECOMMEND : Both Anime & Manga ★★★★★ 

This is an oldie but a real goodie. I think it was way back when I was in middle school when I first watched Claymore but recently I rewatched it and it’s still very good. The action scenes were top notch and each battle is very interesting to watch especially when they really go at it. 

The story takes place in medieval-esque time in a world that’s overrun by demons known as Youma who can disguise themselves wearing human skin. They’re difficult to get rid of and when a town found themselves infested, they have no choice but to contact and Organization in order to dispatch a Claymore warrior in order to deal with the monster. In this story, we follow a Claymore named Claire, one of the Silver-Eyed Witches as she is accompanied by her human companion Raki. 

The Organization is definitely the Order’s equivalent, Youma’s as Akumas and Claymore/Silver-Eyed Witches as Exorcists. 

Those who love D.Gray-Man would definitely find something to like in Claymore as they hit similar themes although Claymore is definitely a bit more darker and gory in nature so beware of that (A bit of warning on assault too. I think two scenes but it didn’t get far.) There’s definitely body horror and blood and guts but it’s mostly keep out of eyesight in the anime but the same can’t be said for the manga. 

The story is really intriguing and really led you to wanting to know more and wanting to know how it ends. The soundtrack is also absolutely fitting and gets you hype up with the scenes. There’s 26 episodes for the anime and the manga is complete with 156 chapters (give or take) Though I haven’t finished the manga yet so no spoiling me (;´д｀) Not that I don’t know the ending...what?! Sometimes I can’t help myself! 

I have so many things I want to rave about this anime but I’m gonna keep my lips shut and let you experience it by yourselves. (・ω<)

№ 2 — 07 GHOST 

RECOMMEND : Both Anime & Manga ★★★★

Same with the above, I was probably in middle school when I first stumbled on this anime. After completing Claymore for the second time, I instantly remembered and rewatched it. This focuses more on emotional point similar to D.Gray-Man where characters have their own arcs and lessons to go through. 

07 Ghost takes place in a fantasy realm with cultural influence from Germany, magic in forms of Zaiphon and even have Sky Pirates! Yes Sky Pirates! The story however follows Teito Klein, a battle skalve (slave) for the Empire but one day he starts to remember his past and flees from the Empire falling into the church grounds where the 7 Ghost are worshipped. And soon he have to deal with Kors and Wars who temps humans to grant their wishes before taking their souls and run into the 7 Ghosts as he tries to uncover his hidden memories of the past. 

I think out of the three recommendation, 07 Ghost hits most of the same notes as D.Gray-Man though I do prefer DGM in terms of story telling and everything but 07 Ghost is an interesting emotional journey of its own. In this series, the Church mirrors the Order though DGM order is much darker in terms of ambitions, Wars and Kors mirroring Akumas and the Clerics and 7 Ghosts can stand in the place of the exorcists. Allen and Teito have similar notes as well but I won’t say much more because it’d be spoilers but a clue would be in terms of identity, they’re not all they seem. Lastly, 07 Ghost have a beautiful melody called Raggs Requiem that would be Lacrimosa Lala’s song equivalent. 

The anime guarantees a good time having hit the same comedic and emotional points and for all those shonen-ai shippers, this is the series for you (o'ｕ≦o) though I have yet to see if the couples end up together (I’m still reading the manga. Gomennasai m(；∇；)m ) so no guarantees on that. For the first time viewers, you’re gonna need tissues for the anime. It’s not a long anime with 25 episodes that focuses on the church before Teito leaves for the journey but it’s a worthwhile experience. 

As for the manga...I was a bit disappointed by a couple of scenes as it moves at a fast pace and didn’t have as much of an emotional impact on the readers as covered by the anime but the story is fascinating and the characters have many layers and the deeper you go, the more you see their motivations aren’t surface level. The manga isn’t long spanning exactly 100 chapters (if you count the extra) and there’s enough mystery and emotional backstory as well as action to go around. I’m actually disappointed that they didn’t continue the anime as the story after Teito left the Church was very interesting especially when it comes to the identity of Teito Klein as well as the true identities and past of the 07 Ghost : (1) Zehel, (2) Fest, (3) Profe, (4) Relikt, (5) Vetrag, (6) Ea and (6) Lankarte as follows - 

Not to mention we have a younger less cynical perverted version of Cross, a less eccentric but still highly eccentric Komuii-like character as well as a cute mascot, Burupya! How could you say no to such a cute face?

№ 3 — PANDORA HEARTS 

RECOMMEND : Both Anime & Manga ★★★★★

OKAY, YOU KNOW WHERE I’M GOING WITH THIS. THOSE THAT KNOW WILL KNOW AND I KNOW THAT MOST OF YOU KNOW! This...This is probably the only anime and manga that can compete against DGM emotionally and story-plotting wise. They both will eff-ed you up emotionally, bawling into tissues as well as leave you screaming at books and screens at what will happen next. 

Oh gosh, I hope I do it justice. 

Pandora Hearts takes place in a fictional England in Victorian Era times in the age of noble houses and Dukedoms. On the very day that a boy Oz Vessalius is about to have his Coming to Age ceremony, he fell down and discovers a pocket watch upon a that plays a mysterious melody. Strange things happens and he was thrown into the world of Abyss - a twist on Lewis Caroll’s Wonderland filled of broken things, the Will of the Abyss and beings called Chains. There he meets a Chain and form a contract with her bringing him back to his own world but an Organisation have tracked him down and now he have to cooperate with them as he unravels the mystery about himself, the Chains, the Abyss and the dark secret that loomed behind the noble houses that affects their pasts, present and future. 

There’s so much I want to say and yet can’t say about this series because the amount of spoilers. It would be something that haunt you for a long time and once you get invested, you can’t quite get out. 

There’s similarities between characters such as Oz with Allen and I dare say Komuii and Sheril with Xerxes but both series have a strong character cast that you would fall in love with each of them and layered story where nothing is as it seems including characters. The Chains can stand as either Innocence or Akumas in a sense but it isn’t a typical monster hunting story, it’s rather focused on unravelling the mystery one string at a time. There are heavy elements on horror and a bit of warning of blood and a bit of bodily harm so take note of that.

The anime is 25 episodes long and serves as a good enough introductory to the series but the manga is where the story truly shines. The soundtrack however is wicked epic and worth listening to. Yuki Kajiura lends her talents creating haunting melodies that would haunt your mind and tug at your hear strings. The manga spans around 104 chapters and good news! It’s completed so no need to sit in agony for so long (gawd knows I have. I had to wait for years. I still have to finish up the manga thoughᕕ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕗ Yes, yes, I am a bit slow when it comes to mangas) But I think most of you are pretty acquainted with this. How I know? Well....when this happens. 

One last thing I need to mention - the art for Pandora Hearts is extremely beautiful and you will find yourself staring at a single page for more than a few seconds just to take in all the details. That’s it. 

CONCLUSIONS

That’s pretty much what I’ve been able to gather over the last couple of months. I hope the recommendations are helpful in some way. Even if it’s not, it’s fun to write about for a bit. I definitely know there’s more series to recommend and would love to hear if there are suggestions. I’ve heard about Demon Slayer being one of them but haven’t started on it yet. Anyways....
