The thing is, when Donna needed a date to her ex's wedding, she asked Sam first. Sam got all weird about it -- could he not simply sit with her, dance with her a couple of times, and maybe snake an arm around her if the situation called for it? Apparently, that's a non-starter, because it'd be like dating my sister. No one asked for fake dating, but if it would make her feel less weird about going, then she'd be all for it.

Enter Josh Lyman, who teaches down the hall from her. He and Sam and Donna eat lunch together every day, but apparently Josh doesn't seem to feel a sibling-esque bond with her because he is happy to accept her invitation. He shows up in a new suit -- or at least one that's dry cleaned and ironed. He doesn't leave her side the whole night. He spins her around the dance floor, his hand rarely leaves the small of her back, and he's excited to talk her up to anyone who will listen.

Including their new principal, Dr. Abigail Bartlet.

They didn't anticipate seeing her running their first faculty meeting of the school year, nor did they anticipate her dropping by Josh's classroom to tell them how much they remind her of her and her husband. So, they decide to keep up the facade. The only problem is, they've been denying to their students that they've been dating every time they ask. Now, they're stuck trying to convince their students that they're not dating, for... professionalism, or something, they've never really had much of a solid answer to that one, while also pretending that they are dating for the benefit of Dr. Bartlet and maybe their co-workers?

It's a complicated game, as complicated as the new feelings popping up for Donna. Sure, she's always had a crush on Josh, who wouldn't? But he's slowly becoming the person she counts on when she has a mountain of papers to grade or when an angry parent emails her. And they're spending their evenings and weekends together with increased frequency -- for appearances' sake, according to Josh -- and she finds that she misses him when they're apart.

Dr. Bartlet corners Donna one afternoon to tell her that they need another female chaperone for prom -- she doesn't teach the kids who are typically the prom-goers, but how's she going to say no to her boss? It's only when she arrives, all dressed up, that she realizes Josh has also been volun-told to chaperone.

He looks good -- he always looks good -- but they're working, and they're stuck in the pretending cycle. So she's surprised when toward the end of the night she feels him take her hand and lead her outside of the prom venue to a little garden, where they share their first dance.

And their first kiss.

And definitely not their last.

Josh Lyman is an emergency medicine doctor. When he's asked why he went into emergency medicine, he'll say that no two days are ever the same, that he'd rather chew his own arm off than sit in front of a microscope all day. But the truth is, it's because he lost his big sister when he was a kid, and the idea that he could do something to help others makes that an easier weight to carry.

Josh likes going to the coffee shop across the street from the hospital after a long shift. It's usually quiet by the time he gets off, and it gives him a chance to decompress before heading home. It helps that his best friend Sam Seaborn owns it, too. He walks in one day expecting to see Sam behind the counter, only to discover that Sam has hired someone new.

Her name is Donna, Josh learns. Or Donnatella -- her mom's Italian, her dad's Irish. She's from Wisconsin, of all places -- her shitty boyfriend's finishing up his residency and she's working a couple of different jobs to help them stay afloat. (Leave it to Sam to hire a woman he thinks he can help save.)

Of course, Donna doesn't need anyone's help. She's smart, witty, capable... Josh can't help but be captivated by her. And if he finds himself stopping by for some coffee on non-work days, or on days he knows Sam won't be there, well, sometimes that's how it goes. There are sparks -- of course there are sparks -- but it's not like he can do anything about it. She's dating someone, he's focused on his career, and it's not like he's great with women anyway.

After about a year of regular coffee shop patronage, Josh is on his way out of the hospital after a long shift when he sees Donna, hobbling on crutches as she attempts to make her way out of the emergency room. Turns out she was in a minor car accident and injured her ankle. Dr. Freeride couldn't be bothered to show up to make sure she was okay, so Donna dumped him.

Josh, for his part, is indignant, ranting. He's pretty sure he saw the aforementioned Dr. Freeride in the cafeteria about an hour ago, and what kind of guy can't be bothered to take the elevator up a few floors, and --

Donna cuts him off with a kiss.

Now, when Josh heads over to the coffee shop, Donna's in the corner, saving him a spot. She's getting some last-minute studying done before her big exam -- she's finally finishing the college degree she put off while she was dating Dr. Freeride. She's not sure, but she thinks she might want to get her master's degree after she graduates in a couple of weeks.

The engagement ring has been hidden in Josh's sock drawer since the day he found her leaving the ER.

I love krusie but I don't think they would do normal "couple's" stuff even if shipped romantically. Susie chomps Kris's head every day in the lunch room and huffs their apple hair all day during class and brawls them in the hallways and nobody knows they're dating until 6 months in when Toriel makes some remark about "Kris's girlfriend" and everybody loses their shit

I will never turn down a Whumper going out to assassinate Whumpee, only to realize they're too sweet and/or pretty and they can't do it, falling in love with Whumpee instead. They know their boss is going to probably kill them, but they refuse to harm, much less kill Whumpee. They don't deserve it.

I see a lot of Jegulus-critical folks complaining about the ship being only popular because it removes James as an obstacle for Wolfstar when Prongsfoot would be the more obvious ship (and I say this with love because I actually love Pronsgfoot), but I think this criticism misses a crucial point.

Jegulus as a ship has become so popular because it has an appealing dynamic on its own, even when you take other ships out of the equation, simply because it contains several popular tropes:

Enemies-to-lovers. Slytherin/Gryffindor, Death Eater/Order member, no further explanation needed, really.

Sports rivals. A softer version of the above. Both excellent quidditch players, which translates well into a pro career after Hogwarts or to various sports AUs. Still a fun take on the rivalry trope but with less deadly stakes.

Best friend's brother. No matter from which angle you tackle this issue (supportive Sirius, antagonistic Sirius, matchmaking, ultimatums, what have you) - it's always fun, and it provides a wide range of interpretations for the writers to play with.

Second chance romance. Not necessarily and not always, but the option is very valid (Regulus seeing the error of his ways, returning to the 'light side' and rekindling his romance with James).

Doomed romance. Both characters die very young and very heroically in the canon. We love tragedy in this fandom. Humans love tragedy—Romeo and Juliet, anyone? Enough said.

Forbidden romance - pretty much pairs excellently with every point mentioned above.

Needed to get this off my chest. I love Prongsfoot, I do, and I could argue the appeal of that ship as well, but I think that Jegulus is popular because it's interesting in its own right, not because of its support role for other ships.
