crowley conspiracy connoiseur i wanna confirm smth, is it true that Crowley NEVER ever used his magic??
Like without the aid of a magical item (e.g the part where he drank a transformation potion on prologue to turn into a ghost to test Grim and Yuu, thats not exactly HIS magic) I dont think he ever did?? Like even just a simple teleportation spell he never casted anything--- but he has knowledge about magic thats for sure--
but back to the question— he never ever casted a single magic in lore right??? Cuz I think its bcs his magic heavily relies on the Dark Mirror, thats why when theres an overblot hes not doing anything like fight it himself despite being the headmaster-- instead he uses the magic of students-- because he cant do anything magical without that Dark Mirror??
Or maybe his magic is really just prophetic, which is completely useless in combat/power kajsja
am gonna die if he actually used magic but i just forgot 💀💀💀
Finally, someone who addresses me by my proper title!!! 💞🤪 /j
Just like Crowley, the answer to this very good question is annoyingly complicated 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。 Because it’s YES and…No???
The thing is, in the Twisted Wonderland game, he never uses magic, so you are correct! The Dark Mirror, the Potion, the Ghost Camera, and that magic Hammer thing for the guest room: all of these are magic items that Crowley has used. Even in the Savanaclaw chapter where he teaches Ace, Deuce, and Grim about blot, he summons the three Ramshackle ghosts to battle them to create blot. He has never been in a battle in-game, which is very sus. It’s even lampshaded in the prologue, when Crowley says to catch the runaway Grim at the entrance ceremony, Leona says “why don’t you do it yourself?”
But here’s where it gets complicated: In both the manga and the novel, he DOES use magic- but on a very minor scale.
Tumblr media
He demonstrates fire magic with the tip of one claw, saying how imagination is vital to casting magic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the Heartslabyul manga AND the novel when Riddle overblots, he actually casts a barrier to protect the students from the debris. (Tee hee he was lowkey kinda cool for this)
Tumblr media
And finally, in the novel he seems to magically give Grim the magestone collar.
This inconsistency makes me weirdly grumpy lmao, because isn’t it strange how there are no rumors about the Headmage’s “strong magical power!” Or something? You’d think that the headmage of a prestigious academy would have those types of rumors surrounding him, but he doesn’t. However, I am consoled by the fact that nearly all the magic Crowley has used in outside-game stuff (minus the little fire) is all PASSIVE/DEFENSIVE magic.
Barriers, summoning items. Not the most aggressive type of magic, right? So I think you’re right that Crowley may not have strong attack-type magic, which makes sense if he’s inspired by Maleficent’s raven. Diablo supports Maleficent; he’s not the one shooting lightning at everybody! In Idia’s Night Raven Quest, Crowley is definitely the defense/support type 🤪 Perhaps he really can’t do anything with the Overblots because he can’t attack with magic well.
It’s also become a running gag that Crowley “appears” in front of people literally whenever. I don’t think it’s teleportation magic- but a transformation. He seem to turn into a raven/crow in the opening animation several times, so maybe he doesn’t even need teleportation magic? He can just turn into a tiny bird, very inconspicuous, and turn back into his human form to catch people off guard. And if he is Levan, who was the left-hand war general, he would have a significant amount of physical strength and fighting prowess. Hmmm…
Tumblr media
Now that you mention it though, I realize NRC actually has a lot of connection with things that DONT use magic 🤔 Pomefiore with poisons and curses, Ignihyde with machines, Savanaclaw and sports, Octanivelle and intellect, and Scarabia with astrology?!? Interesting how the stars can be used for predictions 👀 I wished it was mentioned in-game tho…Anyway, Diasomnia is this one weird case where the students there are literally just good at magic 😭 SUS?!?!?
Oops this got very long 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。 Didn’t mean to use your ask to create another theory 🤣 I hope this helps, because I literally cannot think of a single instance where he uses his own magic in-game??? Which is very sus and idk if the novel and manga count for this…thanks for the ask, it was super interesting! 👀
Edit: As of Crowley’s card that dropped months after this ask was written, Crowley displays much more magic than what was written here!

It's too late for these thoughts but tbh this tweet:
Tumblr media
To me, this tweet speaks a truth about being in a romantic relationship with Leona that isn't really mentioned, and while people may not talk about it, Leona does have self-esteem issues that the novel really highlights.
It wouldn't be as obvious as this tweet, but I think it would appear is subtler ways and would really need to be something talked about between him and his S/O.
Honestly, this is just food for thought, but I would really like to see that played out in Leona x OC fics or Leona x Yuu/Reader ones. Cause he deserves it.

Twisted Wonderland Game vs. Manga vs. Novel: What is the Difference, vol.3
Volume 2 of the manga ends with the dream that is identical to the opening of 1-15 of the game, and to the equivalent part in the novel.
The game’s book/chapter system will be used here to keep things from getting too confusing, but the chapter-counting system in the manga is different, and the novel has no chapters at all.
1-15 Game: Deuce wakes up the player character. Cater arrives and escorts everyone to Heartslabyul.
1-15 Manga: Cater welcomes everyone to Heartslabyul.
1-15 Novel: Deuce apologizes for keeping Kuroki Yuuya awake all night talking. Yuuya realizes that this is the first time he has ever spent the night with anyone who wasn’t a family member, and how much fun they had. They go to Heartslabyul and meet Cater, painting roses.
While Cater reveals his unique magic for the first time at this point in the game and novel, the main four were ejected from Heartslabyul by Cater’s clones in volume two of the manga, so they go straight to the Unbirthday Party.
1-16 Game, Manga, Novel: Cater encouraging Ace to give Riddle his chestnut tart and the subsequent fallout are the same.
1-17 Game: Ace protests against the chestnut tart rule. The player character calls the rule stupid. (“foolish” in the official translation)
1-17 Manga: Ace protests against the chestnut tart rule. Enma Yuuken calmly asks if there is any particular reason to uphold it. Ace calls the rule stupid.
The rest of 1-17 is the same as the game, except Yuuken is collared alongside Ace, Deuce and Grim.
1-17 Novel: Ace protests against the chestnut tart rule. Ace calls Riddle stupid.
After the Heartslabyul students agree with Riddle, Deuce steps forward to say he agrees with Ace. Yuuya experiences brief, silent panic at his inability to go to Ace’s aid despite how much Ace has helped him. Yuuya is not collared.
After the main four are removed, the game and manga show us Riddle low-key freaking out about how delayed they are, Cater asking Trey if he can’t do something and Trey saying he cannot.
This was moved to a later part in the novel (the game equivalent of 1-19, where Riddle has a Heartslabyul student collared and removed from the dorm for an infraction), but otherwise everything is the same.
1-18 Game: Ace fails to pronounce Chenya’s name.
1-18 Manga: Deuce fails to pronounce Chenya’s name.
1-18 Novel: Ace asks Yuuya why he didn’t take better care of Grim, as Grim’s insulting of Riddle is what got them in trouble. Yuuya interprets this as Ace calling him out for not standing up for him in his time of need.
Deuce fails to pronounce Chenya’s name.
1-19 Game, Manga: Identical
1-19 Novel: The scene in the library is the same up until the point Ace asks if Trey won’t stand up against Riddle because he is afraid of being collared. In the game and manga this leads directly to Crowley showing up and telling him he’s being loud, but in the novel Yuuya has a brief emotional breakdown, trying not to cry as he apologizes to Ace for not standing up for him. They talk out their feelings and Crowley appears soon after.
1-20 Game, Novel: Deuce asks how NRC decides its house wardens.
1-20 Manga: Yuuken asks how NRC decides its house wardens.
There is also an added panel in the manga of Yuuken comparing house warden challenge battles to kendo. Trey expressing surprise that everyone, even Deuce, is willing to challenge Riddle, is in the game and novel but not in the manga.
1-20 Novel: In the game and manga Crowley reminds the students that a battle for the housewarden position can only be fought with magic—no fists—and leaves. In the novel, however, Crowley reminds them to watch their magic usage and Ace follows with “Oh, right, you’re talking about overblot”. Crowley then explains over-blotting and its dangers and the role of magical stones to Yuuya.
The main four then return to Ramshackle for interactions with the ghosts. At night, no one is able to get to sleep, so they stay up discussing Trey, and then Malleus Draconia.
1-21 Game: The player character wakes up from another dream to Grim and Ace being excited for the fight.
1-21 Manga: After the dream, the morning at Ramshackle is skipped in favor of going straight to the fight. Riddle asks why Deuce has shown up in Yuuken’s kendo helmet, which did not happen in the game or novel.
1-21 Novel: Yuuya wakes up from the dream to Deuce and Ace discussing the breakfast that the cafeteria’s chef ghost has prepared for them, as all the ghosts are looking forward to the fight.
1-22 Game: Riddle collars Deuce and Ace, insults their magic-less parents and Ace punches him in the face. A student throws an egg at Riddle, Riddle collars everyone.
The player character calls out to Ace, whom Riddle is trying to kill.
1-22 Manga: Riddle collars Deuce and Ace, insults their magic-less parents and Ace punches him in the face. A student throws an egg at Riddle.
The surrounding students then start throwing many things at Riddle, Cater and Trey, including but not limited to paint cans, glasses, pipes, paint brushes and a pocket watch. Yuuken appears in his kendo outfit to protect Riddle from the crowd. Riddle collars everyone. Yuuken calls out to Ace, whom Riddle is trying to kill.
1-22 Novel: Riddle collars Deuce and Ace. Yuuya steps forward and asks Riddle to stop, saying he doesn’t care who is right and who is wrong, he just wants the fighting to stop. Riddle insults Ace and Deuce’s magic-less parents and Ace punches him in the face. A student throws an egg at Riddle.
Riddle collars everyone. Deuce calls out to Ace and tries to run to save him while Riddle is trying to kill him.
1-23 Game, Manga, Novel: There is more dialogue in the game as the characters have to explain what is going on for the player to be able to visualize it, while the manga has the flexibility of being able to show what is happening, but there were no changes made.
1-23 Game: The dangers of over-blotting are explained and Ace attacks Riddle, joined by Deuce and Grim, and then Trey and Cater. Crowley leaves to evacuate the other students.
1-23 Manga, Novel: As Crowley orders Trey and Cater to fetch the teachers and other house wardens, he is interrupted by Riddle attacking them with a tree, and Crowley creates a magic barrier to protect the group. The novel skips the overblot explanation, as it happened earlier, but keeps Crowley’s barrier.
This leads to Riddle announcing he will take off everyone’s heads, which is the end of volume three of the manga and goes directly into the overblot battle in the game and novel.
▶︎ End Volume 3 Manga Comparison
I also have comparisons for volumes 1 and 2 but I was still learning how to use tumblr and they are less helpful than they are confusing, and tumblr won't let me edit them :< If that is okay, they can be read here!

By the time the bell sounded at the end of the day, Yuuya had to support Grim as they walked because he could barely even move.
"Man, I'm beat..." Grim drooped on Yuuya's shoulder like a wilting flower. "Let's go home already."

So I started reading the TWST light novel for the first time and wtf 😭 ITS SO GOOD?!? Yuuya is my son now, and tbh I’m gonna be really sad if there’s a new Yuu in the Savanaclaw novel. It’s really amazing how different mediums show worldbuilding in different ways. The game, manga, and novel show so many facets of the TWST world, so much so that it would be nearly impossible to compile all the lore into one single medium, so I really appreciate all of the perspectives.
Ace was such a sweetheart?!? Like he was even more ruthless towards Yuu than usual, but I really loved the scene in Ramshackle where he apologized. I think the in game prologue and Book 1 is at a decent length, because you wouldn’t want to bore newcomers or anything. But that scene was so sweet that I wished it was in the game too! The ghosts are such sweethearts too, and the fact they made the bed for Yuuya is ahhh!!!
The way Leona was introduce felt a lot more natural too, and I hope the novel for the Savanaclaw chapter will…tweak some things? Or at least add some scenes to showcase Leona more.
BUT CROWLEY AHXBSVAVZVW. I think Yuuya’s emotional vulnerability really allows us to delve deep into a character’s personality and actions, and Crowley is just as mysterious as ever. But I adore how the Whip of Love is described and how Crowley actually has a cane to he uses for dramatic effect haha. I find it so fascinating how Crowley is described by Yuu to look very sad and melancholic. Sad birb hour… but Crowley came off as a lot more affectionate and dad-like in the novel, it’s so sweet 😭 Can’t wait for the utter betrayal and carelessness later 😃 I kid…but the way Yuu grabbed onto Crowley several times when nearly falling was such a nice detail. Again, the game is phenomenal, but it’s very limited in terms of how exactly the characters interact with each other.
There’s just so many miscellaneous things that I’m loving so far 💖 It’s so cool how TWST has been expanding to so many different mediums (fingers crossed for the anime one day!), because not many popular games have the ability to do that, and it seems like TWST is making the most of it. It’s so amazing!!
