I was just wondering as a fellow ace if you had read any adult novels with ace main characters. All the ones I know of are solidly YA. There's nothing wrong with that, I was just wanting to branch out.

Case Details:

Mumbai, India has a dark criminal underbelly hidden underneath its surface. The Maelstrom, a notorious pirate whose true face and name are unknown, has recently moved in, along with his lieutenants Vanya Shaw and Dawood Rangan. Rangan has restired to become an egotistical Bollywood film producer, releasing heavily romanticized films on his "adventures" with the Maelstrom, though truthfully the sinister pitate he is still lurks underneath. Vanya Shaw meanwhile, has become the self appointed queen of Mumbai's criminal underworld, working her gang to near death in strick slum conditions. The Maelstrom has gone back to running his old gang, The Crows, but the three do stay in contact to assist an underground international terrorist group known only as the Militia.

The Kashmirian is a local assassin looking to assassinate both Rangan and Shaw as a job interview to get hired by the Maelstrom, seeing the two as just "loose ends" in the Maelstrom's operations. Meanwhile, however, an entirely different conspiracy is afoot. Agent 47, international assassin extraordinaire, has been sent in to eliminate Abdul Chabra, Hemant Laghari, and Vivaan Dhar, a trio of thieves whose MO is working as security for years at highly secure buildings under fake identities in order to case them for theft. A previous employer whom they stole from tracked them to Mumbai and hired 47 to eliminate them.

47 entered the country under the alias Tobias Rieper and moved into the local Chawl to case the area. The Kashmirian happens to be living in the same building at the same time, where his neighbors have taken notice of his suspicious behavior. Namely, they saw him with a conspicuously large briefcase and what seemed to be a sniper rifle stand. Overhearing this conversation, 47 decides to use the Kashmirian as his scapegoat in his operation.

Abdul and Hemant work as private security at Rangan tower, where Rangan is shooting his latest movie. The Chawl is across the street from it, where the Kashmirian has his sniper rifle set up to aim for Rangan from his apartment balcony. However, the Kashmirian isn't a very good assassin, as he can't adjust the scope right to aim for Rangan's window. Seeing his opportunity, 47 steals the rifle and sneaks out, prompting the Kashmirian to panic. Assuming he's been caught, the Kashmirian books it to the street and catches the bus to get out of town at roughly 5:15 pm, with his ticket stamped with the time.

47 sneaks back into the apartment with the rifle and takes his shots. First, he shoots a propane tank near the top of the building, causing it to explode when Laghari goes for his smoke break nearby, sending his body hurling from the top of the building to the bushes below. Then, 47 shoots an oil barrel near the bottom of Rangan tower. Abdul, who hadn't heard the explosion due to guarding the loud construction area at the bottom of thr building where Rangan tower is still under construction, blows himself up when he lights his cigarette nearby.

47's final target, however, cannot be hit from his current vantage point in the Kashmirian's apartment, as Dhar is posing as a guard at the train yard to cover the thieves intended escape route. As such, 47 needs to break into another apartment room on the opposite side of the Chawl to use its balcony as a vantage point. The problem being that two neighbors are gossiping just outside the door he needs to lockpick into. Knowing that they'd see him with a rifle on his back no matter which route he took, 47 ditched the rifle for now and took a route between the apartment rooms where he could break in through the apartments locked window, unlocking the door from within. Then, to remove the neighbors from his path, 47 lured them into the room by leaving the door adjar and creating a loud crash by throwing utensils around. Then, 47 bludgeons them unconscious from behind and stuffs them in the closet. Finally, with all obstacles removed, 47 retrives the sniper rifle again and takes his shot, popping Dhar in the head from a specific angle through a hole in the train yard roof.

His task done, 47 plants the rifle back on the stand exactly as the Kashmirian left it to frame him. However, he cannot take his leave just yet. A new contract has come in for Dawood Rangan, Vanya Shaw, and the Maelstrom, so 47 must remain at his apartment for the time being to scope out new targets.

This is where the Ace Attorney cast comes in. Interpol had been monitoring Rangan for quite some time now in an attempt to link him and the Maelstrom back to the Militia. An apparent threat on his life threatens to undo all that hard work, so they call in Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth to examine the scene. Miles quickly finds the smoldering bullets in both the propane tank and the oil. While the bullets are too fried for ballistic markings to be applied, Miles is able to determine the only vantage point from which both shots could be fired to be the Kashmirian's apartment room. There, he finds the Kashmirian's rifle set up to aim for Rangan's office. Furthermore, when Dhar's body is discovered, Miles matches the bullet's markings to the rifle. Time of death is marked down as 5:17 for Laghari, 5:19 for Abdul and 5:25 for Dhar. Miles then takes the testimony of the neighbors who were assaulted in someone else's apartment and realizes the killer must've broken in to get his shot on Dhar. He also takes the testimony of the neighbors who were suspicious of the Kashmirian and "Tobias Rieper", a "tourist" who claims he was taking a bus tour at the time. Miles now thinks he has a clear idea what happened and the Kashmirian is swiftly arrested at a nearby airport.

This is where Phoenix Wright enters the picture. Phoenix is taking a family vacation with Trucy around the world when he finds Miles investigating the crime scene. Miles informs him that he's been called in to investigate a major crime scene and that he's not at liberty to discuss it with civilians. But, Nick can tell something's bugging him and Miles admits as cryptically as he can that one of the three killings didn't have a motive. As in, Miles is bothered by the fact that the Kashmirian seemingly had no motive to kill Dhar as he has no obvious ties to Rangan, especially as he went out of his way to do so.

Interested, Phoenix visits the Kashmirian at the detention center. Knowing Phoenix vaguely by reputation, the Kashmirian admits to everything in his plot to kill Rangan and Shaw, assuming that the Maelstrom brought him in to get him released. When the Kashmirian denies killing Abdul, Laghari, and Dhar and protests he had no motive to and doesn't even know who they are, the Magatama shows he isn't lying, prompting Phoenix to take his case so the real killer doesn't escape.

Oh, and for conveniences sake, lets assume the Ace Attorney characters read up on another Marathi to be able to talk to people here.

vayna was born smart, and not in the super genius way, like he came out knowing he was going to be an ace in all his science and math classes. but in the way that he had no idea until his schooling developed past the volcanos and potato batteries; he LOVED chemistry, any time he could break in after school and experiment, he did. it was better than being at home. during middle school, he was essentially on his own, too busy trying to find things to blow up or getting into trouble, while he wasn't aware of it at the time, his brother was also running around, getting into trouble and delving into drugs. their mother may not have been around much, but she expected a clean home and for both boys to be fed by the end of the day. which worked out in vany's favor as he tried not to be home except to sleep. vanya's high school days are a bit of a blur after he fell into the wrong crowd, they were getting high, stealing things from the labs and finding new and creative ways to make a quick buck. he was never really interested in school, but it helped that he had a natural talent for bullshitting the right answers. truth was, he never bullshitted science, it was his first and only love besides weed. the drug that got him through some of the toughest days and the other boring days. it was always one or the other with him, drugs were always the way to bring him back to happiness, a world where his lack of family and a mother's love didn't matter. the spiral happened in his senior year, when he finally decided to leave and never look back. subsequently, a buddy of his decided they were going to learn how to make methamphetamine. it didn't take long for the things that were important to vanny, in terms of education and his love of chemistry to be put on the back burner in leu of making, selling, and taking drugs. he was unfortunately good at it, and the addictions he accumulated only worked against him. while he landed a nice scholarship and went to a local public college basically with a free ride, there was nothing that could compare to the rush of adrenaline and high he got from his side hustle. this would ultimately land him in some of the darkest waters he faced since childhood; his buddy had mixed something wrong and without vanya there to make sure the measurements were correct, he lost his life and later that week vanya was found in possession of coke, meth, weed, and various other pills. his scholarship stripped from him, put out on the street with absolutely no intentions to run back home, he was lost for awhile. vanya was eventually picked up by the cartel, apparently someone had heard of his mad skills and perhaps even his dead buddy had been a member, to this day he still isn't sure how they found him. he accepted with nothing else to lose and a hunger for frying the part of his brain that remembered. they used his addictions to bring him in, gave him a large basement somewhere, a lab, all the supplies he needed, and now he's their drug manufacturer. vanny is anonymous until the bosses want to meet or there's a pickup day, but usually he stays down in his basement (he's got a bed, a full kitchen, a toilet, he's good down there). he is also obsessed with trying out new techniques/making types of new drugs AND 70s decor.

As much as you loved Reve, you couldn’t stay in Wonderland forever. In similar novels you’ve read in your pastime, the protagonist woke up from the Dream or returned home safe and sound. The fact your story hadn’t revealed a clear exit or some final obstacle was beginning to worry you. You also felt bad about freeloading off of the Queen for the past…how long? Dear God- you didn’t know. Did time pass at a faster or slower speed in your reality? Oh no- logistics! Missed semesters! You just wanted a break! Not-

A delicate voice says, “Alice? Your tea’s getting cold.” 

Ah yes, you were having breakfast with Reve. 

“Sorry there, I was just…pondering.” you take a sip of the tea; it’s way too sweet.

“Would you like to talk about it?” the Queen looks at you with great concern in his eyes. Almost like a mother fretting over a miserable child. 

“No, no- just boring existential stuff. It makes the mind wander to…dark places.”

“Places that have dark colors, or places without light?”

“The latter.” you sigh.

Reve bites at his lip, looking down into his lap. Suddenly, a lightbulb goes off in his head.

“I could play a song on the piano! That always cheers me up.”

There he goes again, compensating for you. It feels horrible this time around, when you’re planning on leaving him.

Reve hops out of his seat, taking you by the hand and leading you out of the dining hall. “Any requests?”

That morning Reve played “Waltz in A minor”. His talent does little to soothe your homesick heart.

During your first evening in the Castle of Hearts, you were sobbing out on the balcony. You were always crybaby like that. Still distressed by nearly drowning in your own tears, being bullied by flowers, being condescended to by a caterpillar, and nearly being executed over flowers.

The Cheshire Cat groomed itself, then stretched. Probably the most normal cat thing it’s done. “There may be a way.”

You perked up at that, scooching a little closer.

“The last Alice went into the Queen’s bedroom, but never came out.”

“So the exit’s there?”

“I do not know.”

“How so?” you huffed.

“No one else was in the room where it happened.” it said. “The Queen went in alone and came out alone- in a shock they say. He then gave a command ‘everyone near, far, above, below, this way and that way is to wear black. No one is to wear color until my Alice comes back.’”

Oh dear.

“Only the Queen wore red at this time. Just today the ban was lifted when he met you.” the cat began strutting off.

“But wait-” you said. “All exposition aside; what happened to Alice?”

“Anyone’s guess. But, if you’re ever feeling desperate to get home, the Queen’s bedroom is your best bet.”

It was 2:53, seven minutes to teatime. The castle layout always seemed to shift, walls looked like floors, halls had loops and doors would take you to random rooms. You were never shown the Queen’s quarters in the first place. All you can do now is use these precious seven minutes to follow the last Alice.

First, you checked the wardrobe. No exit, just clothes and axes laying hidden behind them. Next, you investigated the nightstand. The first drawer had a recipe sheet in a language you couldn’t understand, at first you thought it was shoddy handwriting. In the last drawer, you found a “key”. A jagged message carved at the bottom of the empty drawer read:

ALICE IS BEHIND THE WALL

What you needed to look for was a loose wall.

Starting from the wall behind the nightstand, you traced the walls with your right hand, putting your weight on it. When you pressed the wall north from the bed, your hand sank into it. The room shook and the wall under your palm split. You nearly fell forward but you caught yourself.

After the quake, a room with a chessboard floor was revealed to you.

You think to yourself, This- this has to be it. 

Walking through the dark hallway is an unsettling experience. No twists, shrinking or growing, a normal hallway-

With a looking glass and a box at the end. The mirror is long and framed with gold and sapphires. The box lies in a corner, dressed like a present, velvet and wrapped with a black ribbon. Something tells you to throw yourself at the mirror and never look back. Your curiosity tells you to take a quick peek inside the box.

…One little peek couldn’t hurt. Maybe it’s a parting gift or message from the last Alice? You pick up the box and shake it. It’s heavy, and its contents make two small thuds. You open it-

Then drop it.

You fall on your ass and scurry back.

A head rolls out of the box, eyes glazed over in terror.

Please don’t be Alice. Please don’t be Alice. Please-

The stench of blood mixes with the scent of berries and flour- wait.

“...Alice..?”

“...Alice..?”

The last Alice looked at the Queen in solemn anger- no, betrayal. And that was so, so much worse.

“Reve, is this a way back?” Alice asked.

“..”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Say: that is the exit,” the Queen said in a low voice. “Would you have left without a word?”

Alice looked away.

The Queen’s blood boiled. “Why?! What’s out there?! What can’t I provide for you?! I’m the Queen for God’s sake!”

Alice swallowed. “I know it is reprehensible for me to vanish without so much as a goodbye… But I have things- people care for out there.”

“Who dammit?!”

“My family.” Alice said, thumping his chest with a fist. “That day I fell down the rabbit hole- we were preparing for my youngest’s funeral. I did not want to bury my own child, I did not want to exist in that moment, I wanted to be anywhere else but there- then I saw your Rabbit. I chased after him to distract myself.” he swallowed. “My apologies for using you and your people for my personal entertainment. But, I truly consider you one of my friends, your majesty.” Alice bowed as ‘your majesty’ rolled off his tongue. 

The Queen stomped a foot in his frustration. Hot tears of rage and sympathy leaked out. “So what if you wanted an escape? I don’t care! What’s wrong with that-?!”

“I was shirking my duties to my family-”

“We can be your family- I can be your family! YOU CAN STAY HERE- RIGHT HERE!”

Silence. Breathing…hiccuping.

The Queen looked at Alice with an indiscernible expression. “If I leave now, will you disappear?”

Alice sighed. “I have to go home.”

CLANG!

“What..?”

From behind the Queen came a double headed axe.

Alice’s eyes widened in panic.

“Off with YOUR HEAD!”

The Queen of Hearts lunged forward-

And Alice-

Moved out of the way just in time. 

The blade nearly caught your cheek, and fell down beside your head with an ear-deafening TWANG! 

The Queen laughs, but there’s no joy in it. You put a hand around your throat and just breathe, relieved you weren’t butchered.

“You really think that’s a round trip to Kansas?” he muses. “Well, YOU’RE WRONG!” 

All you do is tremble and whimper under his shadow.

“But you weren’t thinking about coming back at all, were you?” he sneers. “Of course, selfish little Alice just wants to go home oh so badly- and leave me all alone to die.”

“It’s not- it’s not like that-!” you protest.

“SILENCE!” The Queen gets down on one foot to be closer to your face. His long, white hair cages you in. “Your majesty is speaking.”

“Yes, sorry, my grace.” you squeak.

“I like you, Alice, I really do.” He smiles kindly as he lifts your chin with a finger, and there’s a sort of rawness to his new tone. “I like having someone to spoil. The fact your head is still attached to your body says a lot, y’know.” He rises to a standing position, and situates himself in front of the looking glass. “Play one more game with me, won’t you?”

You shakily nod. “C-croquet?”

“Oh no.” he giggles as he lifts you to your feet and shoves you towards the hall’s entrance. “We’re going to play a game of tag.”

Adrenaline shoots through your body at those words.

“I’m it, Alice.”

I always feel like i haven’t read much but this actually is a decent amount of books so idk what im on about

hearts unbroken by cynthia leitich smith

this was a decent ya contemporary novel. i read this because i loved the author's retelling of peter pan. this was not a retelling of wizard of oz but good commentary on the racism in it. a little forgettable and the plot was a little busy. i liked the romance, it was sweet. i liked the mc's personal journey.

overall grade: B-

in the dream house by carmen maria machado

this is a devastating and beautiful memoir about queer domestic abuse and personal growth. i was enthralled with the creative writing, it was often deeply horrifying. i read this for a book club and it was one of the best book club experiences i have had.

a fun romance where a porn star and former boybander meet and fall in love. both of them are bisexual and it's sweet and fast paced.

little thieves by margaret owen

one of my new favorite books. im a sucker for a fairy tale retelling done well, but it's also a heist novel and there's ace rep. it was a wild ride with beautiful illustrations and mini stories within. vanya is a fantastic protagonist and i adore her. im so excited for the next book, i have already preordered the next one!
