In some other news I found a cheap flight to Seattle but I don’t even know if my friend wants me to visit anymore lol
#i did the google flights/destination: anywhere hack#and look i wouldn’t say ‘cheap’ but it’s half what i paid last august#but the thing is she like. never answers my messages anymore. well she answers but like a week has passed and she either doesn’t apologise#or has a feeble reason. and like… we all have lives; you don’t have to justify yourself to me#but i see you online all the goddamn time lol.. posting everywhere and not responding to me specifically#like no one has to be available to me 24/7. at all ever#ignore me for days; by all means#but it is a little wild to be ignored for legit like 10 days and i can see her on instagram; facebook; tiktok the whole time#like if you don’t want to be friends anymore just SAY THAT. and i don’t get why she wouldn’t say it?? i know she’s broken friendships#with people before and been upfront about it. and i think i have said before like.. if you don’t like me anymore just say that#but then when she does message me it’s ‘omg i miss you sooooo much’ but not enough to respond to me#you could read messages from me everyday if you wanted#like i feel like we’re drifting apart really bad. like there’s so much i haven’t told her and i know she hasn’t told me anything either#i don’t know if it’s because of her partner. she lives with them now and i don’t know if maybe they don’t like me and would never want me#visiting if it meant i would be in the same apartment. so maybe she’s just trying to ghost me so i won’t come#or she’s busy with her partner all the time and is forgetting about her friends? i just never thought she’d be one of those people#i have been ditched by friends so they could hang out with their SOs instead sooo many times but i never thought she’d do it to me lol#like she was the friend who had me riding shotgun while her boyfriend sat in the back. y’know?#maybe i’ll just save my money and go to amsterdam instead lol. i can use the money i would’ve spent on american flights#to have a really nice trip and maybe land a dutch boyfriend or girlfriend who i can ignore all my friends in favour of#because fuck it. i feel like it’s my turn now. isn’t it?? people have legit made out in front of me lol 🤪#personal

waiting room | s. reid
Tumblr media
summary: spencer can't seem to escape the girl in the waiting room
pairing: spencer reid x fem!reader
warnings: mentions of reid's addiction & tobias hankel, mentions of kidnapping and mass shootings (in, like, a joking way??) my terrible, terrible humour, ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE LMAO, this is deffo terrible, pls tell me if i missed anything!!
a/n: ok idk if i wanna continue this and make it a series so lmk lol (also im on writers block so i literally can't come up with SHIT)
Tumblr media
SPENCER REID WAS a pessimist.
At least, that’s what he’d call himself. His colleague, Derek Morgan would most likely (and by most likely, he means, definitely already has) call him an overanalysing introvert. But in Spencer’s defense, there has never really been a good reason to go out and “live your life”. Consider this:
Go to the new coffee shop? Mass shooting.
Go to the mall? A child gets abducted.
Leave the apartment for a short while? A stalker finds out where he lives, kidnaps him in his sleep, and, in a nightmarish turn, auctions off his organs to the bidder in the black market.
Besides, his life isn’t some John Green book. There were no life-affirming adventures or poetic moments of self-discovery awaiting him. Carpe diem? A fanciful notion for others, but for him, not so much. Sorry, Mr. Keating.
Yet life—or more accurately, bureau protocol— had its own plans. Ever since the Tobias Hankel incident, a visit to the psychologist wasn’t just a request but rather (unfortunately for him) an order. Which meant, he’d have to risk his entire life to get up and walk for ten whole minutes just to sit and wait, in this glaringly bright waiting room, when he could have stayed at home and read the new books he’d gotten from his team as a get-well gift.
Speaking of which, why the gifts? He was fine. Physically, at least. But really, when have you ever seen get-well-soon cards in an asylum? Well, alright, maybe he was being a little bit dramatic. A visit to the psychologist doesn’t mean he’ll be institutionalised—but then again, Spencer Reid was never one to wear rose-tinted glasses.
This is his third time in the waiting room, and she’s always there. He isn’t sure as to why she is, because, well, unlike himself, she was very clearly an optimist—and at least, from the looks of it, she hasn’t been kidnapped and drugged in the past month. But she's sitting there again, in the exact same chair for the past three weeks, along with a beacon of smiles where joy usually fears to trend. Maybe, he isn't as good of a profiler as he’d like to think he is.
“Dr. Reid?” the call of his name rips him out of his thoughts. He looks up to see the same kind woman he’s seen the past three weeks—not the one in the waiting room, no, he means his therapist.
Dr. Brown was easy to profile: She wore heels to make herself look taller, and she hated wearing glasses, apparent by how she would continuously place them atop her head instead of her nose. Her teeth were abnormally perfect, which meant, she’d had to wear braces when she was younger—which (from his humbling experience) means she wasn’t exactly the most popular at school. Perhaps, psychology felt appealing to her because she could help people like her.
“How are you?” she asks, her pen clicking.
Usually, he’d offer her a meek shrug. The kind that could win awards for its commitment to non-commitment. Besides, he’s not one to talk about how he feels—there isn’t much to say, anyway. And let’s face it,  “How are you?” in the grand tapestry of human interaction is almost as genuine as a three-dollar bill. And, get this, the average person asks “How are you?” 6,739 times a year but only listens to the answer about half the time—well, okay, maybe those numbers might have been fabricated, but isn’t the sincerity behind the question also made up? But instead of telling her all this, he remembers what Hotch had told him, one, two, three weeks ago: that he ought to cooperate with Dr. Brown or the board won’t be happy. So, he kisses his teeth before he says:
“Fine. I’m fine.”
And the session went on.

Back to you
Hunter x Jedi!reader
Spoilers for the bad batch season 3 :)
Tumblr media
Summary: After a long time, you're finally reunited with your family and your lover.
Warning: Canon violence, Mention of mental and physical torture, slight depressing state, hurt/comfort. Fluff!
A/N: Let me know if anyone would like part two. I was planning on making it spicy ;}
Word count: 2.4k
Part two
Tumblr media
It's been months since you got a distress signal from one of your fellow surviving Jedi. Months since you managed to rescue your Jedi friend but sacrifice your own freedom. Months since you've seen your family and your lover.
The last thing you remember from when you were still with the batch was when you were all on Pabu, helping the people restore the beautiful ocean city while you were waiting to get any word from Echo as he helped Rex.
When the only thing missing was Crosshair.
You got the distress signal the same day Echo said he would visit. You knew you couldn't wait for your friend to visit, so with a tight hug, a long and loving kiss and a promise to return safely and quickly, you set the course for your Jedi friend.
Unfortunately, your plan wasn't Vader proof and you ended up captured, switching your place with your friend who managed to escape. You waited for your end, silently apologizing to Hunter and your family, but it never came. Instead, Darth Vader decided you would make a great addition to the imperial inquisitors, so they tried to break you, in every possible way.
For months, they tortured you mentally and physically, leaving you crying and barely alive at the end of every day. But you never broke, no matter what they did to you, you didn't break. There were times when it came close, but thinking of your batch and Hunter gave you strength to fight on.
So when the first opportunity to escape came, you took it. Doing everything in you capacity, even if it meant you'd have to tap into the dark side of the force. Your body had been weakened in the past months, your skin now covered in scars but that didn't stop you and you managed to escape, hijacking an imperial ship and running.
It seemed that even the force was on your side once you coincidentally run into Echo, Rex and the newly forming Clone resistance. But all your happiness disappeared once Echo informed you of the loss they suffered almost immediately you were gone. All those months, just the idea of coming back to your family and how everything would be perfect once again. Everything fell apart and you felt like you were once again in that cold prison cell, waiting for the inquisitors to torture you again. You were falling into the dark abyss, ashamed to even show yourself to Hunter and Wrecker.
It wasn't until Echo came looking for you, four days later. His body radiating happy energy as he practically jumped on you, hugging you and telling you that both Omega and Crosshair managed to escape and were now safely with Hunter and Wrecker on Pabu.
That made you hyperactive, filling you with energy and will to live and both you and Echo were in the ship only few hours later, crossing the galaxy to get back to your family once again.
Three days later you finally made it to Pabu, docking the ship at the top of the city. But while waiting for the ship to touch the ground in a matter of those seconds, your mind betrayed you. Suddenly all you wanted to do was to hide in the corner and dissappear, all those happy thoughts dissappeard, instead being replaced with dark and hateful thoughts. You imagined how Hunter must hate you now that you only returned once everything was alright again. How you dissappeard when they needed you the most. Maybe he's even blaming you for everything bad that happened to his family. Or maybe Omega's the one who hates you now, maybe she thinks that you betrayed them, leaving your family to help someone else.
Your whole body was shaking and you felt like you would faint and when the ramp finally began to descend and the sun shined on your face, Echo had to gently grab you because you swayed like a fragile flower in the wind.
Both you and Echo managed to take a few steps down the ramp before you heard a loud yell. Omega screamed yours and Echo's name, sprinting full speed at you, making you react the same. You yelled her name and she jumped in your arms as you quickly prepared to catch her, hugging her close to you as you began crying, peppering her face with kisses and petting her hair. You managed to crouch with Omega in front of you as you grabbed her cheeks and looked at her more closely, checking for any injuries as she cried telling you how much she missed you.
But as soon as Omegas eyes fell on your face her expression fell as well.
"What happened to your face!" Big tears began rolling down her cheeks as she looked at you. Similar to your body, your face was now littered with both small and big scars, some more visible than the others.
It's been months since you've seen Omega, the young female clone that had unexpectedly entered your life and become like a daughter to you. And after so long, you didn't want your scars to be the first thing you talk about, it was too dark subject to address in the first moments of reunion. So you moved your hands up to her hair, trying to change the subject to something happier.
"Look at your hair! It's grown so much!" You laughed through your tears as you played with the little girl's hair.
"I know, now you can finally braid my hair!" The young girl knew what your were trying to do and played along giggling as she mirrored your hands movements and played with your hair.
You were just about to respond when you both got interrupted by someone whispering your name. Your head snapped behind Omega, falling on a frozen figure, Hunter.
Your body went rigid, completely frozen in time when your eyes meet with his golden ones. Omegas eyes followed yours and once she saw Hunter standing there silently watching, she hugged you one last time before slowly removing herself from you and running towards waiting Echo.
Now that Omega was no longer in front of you, you stood up slowly, your eyes never leaving his as he watched your every move like he couldn't believe you were really there.
Your hands began shaking again and you grabbed your sleeves to try and stop them but to no avail.
"Hunter?"
You whispered back to him, taking a small step towards him. He said nothing, but his body moved and he was by you in the next second, his hands enveloping your body as his own crashed against yours. He squeezed you almost as hard as he could, fearing that if he wouldn't, you would've disappeared again. Hunter buried his face in your neck, inhaling your scent as your hands slowly stopped shaking and you moved them up into his hair. Your forehead fell on his shoulder as you finally closed your eyes, taking in his warm presence. You both stood there for a long minute, not moving as you both tried to soak in each other's warmth.
You felt Hunter deeply inhale once again, his breath tickling your neck, before his lips pressed against the same spot and he kissed you. Repeating the movement kissing up your neck, slowly coming to your face as his hands moved up to your neck, and his thumbs landed on your cheeks as his eyes found yours again. Hunter breathed out your name again, his face so close to yours.
"I thought I lost you..." His normally smoky voice sounded broken, quiet, like he was worried he would scare you away if he'd talk any louder. His own hands began to shake slightly as he gently turned your face around, his eyes jumping from scar to scar.
"Hunter, I'm so sorry. I tried to get back to you, I really did but they-" You tried explaining yourself as his eyes found yours again.
"When your ship returned I thought to myself at least I got one of my girls back...but then only General Prima came out and she could barely look me in the eyes to tell me what happened..." Hunter let out a sigh as his thumb traced the scar across your lips.
"...I thought I lost you and I couldn't bare to even think of what they're doing to you...I tried get you back every day, you and Omega..." He went on slowly and quietly, his other thumb tracing the scar across your eye.
"I'm so sorry Hunter-" You tried to apologise again but he interrupted you again with his thumb on your lips.
"Just...just promise me to never leave me again...I...I can't live without you." Hunter whispered as one tear left his eye and you moved your hand to his cheek, brushing it away as he leaned into your touch.
"I promise Hunter, never again." You nodded your head as you promised him, your own tears escaping you again and you moved your head, leaning your forehead against his.
Hunter let out a gentle puff of air, making your lips tingle as the air hit them. His own lips ghosting over yours as he whispered. "Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum ner ka'ra."
A small smile appeared on your lips and you gently nodded. "Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum ner ashi dul."
You responded and finally moved, pressing your lips against his into a long and loving kiss.
Hunter's hands moved back down to your waist and he pulled you closer again as his kiss turned more desperate.
Your own hands moved around his neck as you pulled yourself impossibly closer, a small sound escaping you as Hunters hand squeezed your hip and he took the chance to deepen the kiss. His tongue prodded against your lips as he entered your mouth in almost like urgent matter.
You let him take the reins and followed his tempo, enjoying the feeling of his arms around you again.
"Okay, you can continue doing that later! Now it's my turn!" You heard Wrecker before another set of arms snaked around you and Hunter, squeezing you even further and lifting you in the air. Both you and Hunter gasped, breaking the kiss to look at the gentle giant as he hugged you, leaning his head on your shoulders. You chuckled, grinning and squeezing one arm out and moving it to gently pat Wreckers head. "I missed you too Wrecker." Even Hunter managed a chuckle as he heard his brother sniffle quietly.
"We're never splitting ever again." Wrecker decided as he slowly put them down and brushed the tears from his eyes away. "Agreed." You nod, grabbing the giant clone's hand and squeezing it.
"What, no hug for me?" Crosshair's sly snake like voice asked as he came closer and crossed his arms in front of his chest an amused frown on his face. Your head turned in his direction and a wide smile grew on your lips and you gently let go of Wrecker and moved around Hunter, letting your hands to drag across his chest as you stepped closer to his youngest brother. "Crosshair!" You grinned and quickly moved closer to him, enveloping him into a big hug. Your movement surprised him greatly as he was expecting a glare and a witty remark instead you hugged him.
His arms were awkwardly waiting at his sides, debating if he should hug you back or push you away. Alas, you were the only one that hugged him so far and he'd be lying to himself if he'd say he didn't need a hug. So he let his arms slowly sneak around your body and he hugged you back, silently laying his head on top of yours.
"I'm glad you're back with us again." You whispered just loud enough for him to hear and you felt his breath hitch.
He slowly let go of you and stepped back a little, watching the scars across your face.
"Come on, you have to meet Batcher!" Omega gasped, grabbing your hand out of nowhere and pulling you towards what looked to be a  excited Lurca hound, running around and chasing Moon-yos. You chuckled at the enthusiasm of the little girl and looked back behind you to your lover and the rest of your family, only to see Hunter slightly glaring at Crosshair and Echo rolling his eyes and pushing the former Sergeant, encouraging him to move, while Wrecker only laughed and followed closely.
Omega managed to introduce you to the lively hound, telling you how she helped her and how they bonded over the time as they managed to survive the empire. Batcher seemed to be the perfect energetic pet for Omega as they began playing together, almost forgetting everyone else that was watching them.
You felt a warm hand on the small of your back and a moment later a warm body pressed against your side as Hunter lowered his head to whisper in your ear. "Come on, you must be starving." He pressed a delicate kiss to your forehead as you turned your head to look at him. "A little, yeah." You confirmed and Hunter motioned with his head to his brothers, before gently pushing you towards the house reserved for the batch.
Hunter whistled, making Omegas and Batchers heads turn, motioning them to follow too.
The shining sun had slowly began to descend as they sat down around the table after they put on some food. They snacked on the delicious fruits, talking about everything, just like they did in the old days, while they watched Omega and Batcher play.
The moment felt perfect, besides the one empty chair, remaining everyone that they will never be complete again. Everything else felt normal, Crosshair's witty remarks, Wrecker's compliments to the food, Echo trying to talk about another one of his missions and Hunter silently trying to listen to everyone as his hand slowly fell on your thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze to reassure you and himself that this moment is in fact real.

description: in which you and your best friend get shown on the kiss cam at a basketball game - what does this mean for your friendship?
warnings: swearing, extremely long i’m sorry
a/n: thank you so much for the request, i had too much fun and got carried away lmao, hope you enjoy lovelies ❤️ also thank you for the love!!!!
⋆ ★ ⋆ ★ ⋆ ★ ⋆ ★ ⋆
you and your best friend, leah were clearly in love with each other but absolute idiots about it. every single person on the planet thought it was obvious the two of you liked each other - to the surprise of many that the two of you weren’t already dating.
“we’re best friends” both of you say at the same time, both of you not realising the mutual faces of hurt. it killed the both of you to respond to dating rumours, wanting nothing more than to be in a romantic relationship. because the both of you were friends for so long, you didn’t want to risk losing each other, even if it meant to suffer in silence.
what made things worse for the both of you is that you were around each other, all day, everyday. you both play for england and arsenal, as well as having a shared apartment. the apartment is full of so much love, an accurate representation of you and leah.
you both balance each other out, leah was more outgoing while you were a little reserved at first until you got to know someone. though, you had gotten a lot better, due to leah always being there next to you, introducing you to people, whispering words of encouragement in your ear, holding your hand and kissing the side of your head. you swear it was strictly platonic, you’re very silly.
“love come on! the bus is here, we need to get downstairs!” leah yells from the bed in the shared hotel room while you were in the bathroom.
“i’m coming, leah, my hair is just being a pain in the ass” you grumble, looking in the mirror and trying to get your hair done for national training. leah comes in the bathroom, standing behind you and wrapping her arms around your waist, resting her head on your shoulder and looking into your eyes through the mirror.
“you look beautiful, babe, let’s go to the bus” she places a kiss on your cheek, you turn bright red, she moves her hands up and down your arms, giving your biceps a gentle squeeze. “i’ll wait for you, hurry up please!” you giggle and nod at her smiling, she sends you a warm grin, light pink settling on the apples of her cheeks.
this was just one of the instances where both of you could’ve confessed your love for each other but the both of you are too clueless and oblivious to do so.
you and leah were both highly influential in the football industry, being advocates for numerous charities and organisations. you end up accompanying leah on her new york visit, both of you were invited to speak at the UN.
it wasn’t a secret that you were afraid of heights, leah knew this and promised that she would take care of you. you sat next to each other on the plane, leah distracting you as much as possible. holding your hand and rubbing her thumb over yours, forcing you to watch a movie with her on her laptop, sharing wired headphones with one another. when you land, you give leah a kiss of appreciation on her cheek, thanking her profusely,
“i’d do anything for you, love, you know that right?”
“yeah, i would do the same, lee” both of you thought about the interaction throughout the whole night, maybe - there’s a chance that you liked each other (duh)
both of you explored new york, sharing laughs, taking pictures of each other, going shopping, loving each others company. as the days progressed, both of you got more touchy, clingy - separation wasn’t an option anymore.
leah got invited to the ny liberty game, dragging you along with her with the promise of her buying whatever you wanted - you only joked about this, this girl could ask you to do anything and you would without any hesitation, something she knew all too well.
you were both sat court side with one another, chatting and sipping drinks and eating lollies, genuinely having so much fun. leah sat with her arm around your chair, constantly checking up on you.
“you alright?” she moves down to say in your ear, her lips lightly grazing the shell of your ear, your cheeks lightly flushed. you nod up at her, “are you?” she smiles at you, “never better”
the game was on, leah was focused on the game and you, arm now completely on your shoulder, thumb mindlessly grazing your exposed shoulder, you move closer into her, resting your body back into hers, she couldn’t wipe the smile of her face.
honestly, watching leah watch the game was more entertaining for you, you loved to see the furrow between her brows, her smile and nod when something goes well, always squeezing your shoulder to indicate that you should be doing the same thing as her as you were confused with what was going on, as you were only focusing on the girl beside you.
there was a break until the next half, you and leah going back to chatting, her arm not moving position, keeping you close to her body and not wanting you to go anywhere.
“you look so beautiful, love” she smiles at you again,
“look at you, lee, you look gorgeous” you move your hand to rest on her exposed knee, she shivers at the contact - you slightly perk up, you were stating your intentions and she understood them finally. she places her other hand over your own, looking into your eyes, both of you had wide pupils and cheesy grins plastered all over your faces. looking like lovesick puppies.
leah kept moving her head down to your mouth every time you spoke to her, as well as only speaking directly into your ear, loving the way you reacted each time she did it. she knew now that you felt the same, both of you increasingly becoming more flirty and touchy with one another, shamelessly showing both of your intentions, you weren’t best friends anymore and it was finally clear to both of you.
you were both so engrossed with one another, focusing your attention solely on each other. leah could tell you were uncomfortable in the position you were sitting in, having to angle your body awkwardly just to look at her face. she moves her hand off yours and you look at her confused, she moves to grab both of your legs and placed them into her lap, comfortingly running her hand over your legs. you were so red that she laughed at you. she literally laughed at your face, smirking and moving to whisper in your ear again.
“what’s wrong, baby, are you hot?” you shake your head lightly, looking straight at the floor,
“well you look hot” she pauses “really hot” you lightly slap her chest and she laughs brightly at you, she was so obsessed with you, she wasn’t gonna hide it anymore. you needed to give her a taste of her own medicine, it wasn’t fair she had this advantage over you.
you grab her lightly by her necklace, bringing her ear to your mouth. “hypothetically, would you prefer if we made out or cuddled, or make out then cuddle?”, you graze your lips on her neck before you pull away. leah’s eyes widen and she squeezes the flesh of your thighs, you giggle at her bright red face as she moves away from you, clearing her throat and refusing to make eye contact.
“what? williamson, you’re just gonna leave me hanging?” she quickly glances over at you, making eye contact and flickering to your lips.
“you’re a little shit” before you could reply, you heard cheering, assuming the girls were coming out to play again, when you look up from leah’s eye contact, you noticed both you and leah were on the big screen, in a big, pink heart with ‘kiss cam’ written on the bottom of the screen.
leah was still looking at you, you frantically tap the back of your hand on her chest, her eyes following where yours were. she grins brightly, and pulls you into a searing kiss, your lips moving together in harmony, she gripped your thigh harder, pulling you impossibly closer, the crowd erupted in cheers when you both finally put everyone out of their misery.
you both couldn’t hear them, the camera showing other couples now. too focused on the kiss you were sharing. she prods her tongue on your bottom lip, you grant her access and both of you continue to share your emotions and love for one another through actions. after a little bit, you pull away and leah chases your lips to place a few more pecks on your lips, grabbing the base of your neck to keep you close.
once she finally pulls away, you both giggle - this was a long time coming and both of you were over the moon. she grabs your hands in hers and looks right into your eyes,
“if it wasn’t obvious, i love you, a lot, i have forever” she rubs her thumbs over your knuckles, you smile at her so lovingly, she swears her heart was beating so fast out of her chest.
“i’ve loved you forever, williamson, took you long enough” she scoffs at you,
“then why didn’t you say anything? why is this on me!”
“i’m shy!”
“uh, based on your little flirting in my ear, i think we’re way past shy, baby”,
“oh fuck you, what about you touching me all night?, the leg thing? and let’s not ignore this little outfit you’ve got on, this was your plan, huh? i bet you even organised the kiss cam” you say with fake annoyance, in reality you were so grateful for the kiss cam
she shakes her head at you, both of you pink in the cheeks, looking like you had gone outside without a jumper in the winter. “come on, let’s go then, my girl, i believe you promised me a make out and a cuddle”
“first of all, the game isn’t over, secondly, you didn’t respond i’m not sure if you deserve it-”
“i don't care”
she pulls you up by the hand, smiling as you walk past people, gunning straight for the exit.
once you both get back to your hotel room, let’s just say you kept your promise.

Nyx x f!Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: visiting with your family goes horribly wrong
Warnings: death, graphic depictions of violence, blood, minor injury, references to torture, a hint of angst & fluff, not proofread well
A/N: I did see your other ask, thank you for your request! I hope this hits the drama mark. same reader as ambushes and invitations, but they can be read separately !
Solstice with Nyx and his family was more than you could’ve imagined. Garlands, decorations, wine, food, music, and great company.
Unfortunately, with the holiday over it meant it was time to do your annual obligatory trek back home. You managed to delay yourself two days before the guilt started creeping in. Estranged would be the best way to describe your relationship with your parents. They didn’t approve of your move to Velaris, or of your chosen profession.
Trying to imagine the negativity flowing from your body, you took a few deep breaths before approaching the house. Outwardly, it was pleasant - normal. Red brick, a neat garden, a path leading right to the front door, a few chickens could be heard clucking from the coop behind the house. Absentmindedly, you wondered if your father ever got around to expanding that.
Inside the house, it always felt strained - even before your relationship with them began to fall apart. There was still love, still good memories, and you put most of your conscious effort into focusing on that. It would be a good visit, and maybe things would begin to mend. Worst case you wouldn’t see them again. Your throat caught, despite the tension that’s the last thing you want.
Three knocks on the wooden door, shaking out your knuckles, and you took a step back, rolling your shoulders and planting your feet like you were headed right into a conflict.
Your mother answered the door, a worryingly pleasant smile on her face as she tugged you into her arms, squeezing tight. “You’ve grown so much,” she commented.
Fighting back a wince or sharp retort, you beamed at her. “It’s good to see you.”
She hummed, grabbing the crook of your elbow to lead you further inside. The scents of your childhood hit you at once, the vague smell of apple pie, old leather furniture, and something else you couldn’t quite place.
“... made your favorite,” you hadn’t realized she was speaking and quickly added your thanks. Your father came in, shooting you a smile as well, and that was basically a warming welcome from him.
Later, you realized just why they were being so pleasant.
“Ella’s daughter completely cut them off,” your mother commented, shooting a nervous look your way. Right - they were scared you’d do the same.
“That’s a shame,” you moved some food around on your plate. Not really, you figured she wouldn’t do it without a good reason. The night was pleasant - no judgemental comments about your profession or choice on where to live, no prying questions about your personal life or if you’d get married soon. When your mother nearly begged for you to spend the night, you decided it couldn’t hurt.
-
Nyx knew you didn’t have the best relationship with your parents, and you’d declined his offer to come with you - outright - but he wanted to be there for you in some capacity.
Your home village wasn’t terribly far from Velaris, and still in easy Daemati range, so he cast his mind out, searching and focusing on you, like his father taught him.
“How’s it going?”
Around a minute later, “Surprisingly good, I’m going to spend the night.”
He fought the disappointment that he wouldn’t see you later, and reminded himself to be happy for you.
“Should I say good luck?”
He could’ve sworn a soft laugh came through. “Maybe.”
You filled him in on a few more details, and eventually he promised to check in the next morning, ignoring your gentle teasing, calling him a mother hen.
-
It happened at breakfast before breakfast. The faint tang of copper filled your senses and you launched out of bed, reaching blindly for the knife Nyx had given you, well aware your knowledge extended to sticking the pointy end at them.
First, your mothers body laid by the door, limbs sprawled at awkward angles, chest unmoving. The door was still open, the remains of a greeting still on her lips, the knife lodged in her throat. Scanning the room, it felt like time stopped, your entire world screeching to a halt. Three bodies laid on the floor, all dead. You heard one faint familiar heartbeat and scrambled down the stairs, feet sliding in the pools of blood.
Wood splintered into your knees as you slid the last few feet to your father, the knife lodged in his chest.
His eyes were half-glassed, knife lodged in his chest. You knew he’d killed the other three men. How had you not woken? Had he cast some kind of shield, now faded as life left him?
You gripped his hand tight, squeezing as his eyes focused.
“Run,” his voice was hoarse, filled with pain.
“I’ll get a healer,” the words were just above a whisper, told in vain - you both knew it was too late.
“I’m proud to be your father,” one tear dripped down his cheek. The first tear you’d seen from him.
“Stop,” you choked.
“We both loved you very much,” the faintest squeeze, maybe just a twitch of his fingers. “Run.”
“I’m not leaving you,” you snarled. Your magic had already cast a basic shield around the room. It wouldn’t hold under heavy assault, but you’d be damned if you let him … die alone.
Maybe it was part of your nature, to accept the inevitable, to try and bring joy where you could, but you focused on him - repeating the happiest memories of your childhood until his chest stopped moving. Just then did you sob, as you closed his eyes.
It was stupid to stay here, but you were in shock - you couldn’t leave.
-
It was normal for a short delay between responses, and he waited. A chime of the clock - five whole minutes, and nothing. It shouldn’t have taken this long, and he knew you wouldn’t ignore him.
“Are you alright?” He tried.
“Help,” the word was so bleak, your voice desolate and burdened in a way he’d never heard from you, your mind completely open. Fear struck him as he saw through your eyes, fear that could either freeze him in place or bring enough anger to topple mountains. Blood - everywhere, five bodies - two that looked like your parents, three others - and your hands. You were knelt on the floor, one hand still in the pool of blood, the other holding your fathers hand. He could imagine your wide eyes, stuck open in horror.
One of the bodies was still moving - chest still breathing, rising to his feet, the knife lodged in his thigh, pulled out and already healing - and you didn’t know.
“Run, y/n, run.” Nothing. He needed to get you out of there. Panic he hadn’t felt before hit him. “I’m coming, love.”
In that second, as he was still watching through your eyes, there was just enough time for the man to slice at your back, movements uncoordinated, a strike designed to incapacitate - not kill. You dodged in time for the blade to slice across your shoulder.
The next second, a wave of dark, pure night slammed him against the opposite wall with a loud crack. Bound in ropes of magic, he left him alive for now. For answers, later. He slid his arms under your shoulder, and he winnowed directly to the river house - right outside his father’s study, where he knew at least a few of his inner circle were gathered. You were limp in his arms, chest heaving with silent sobs, hands clenching at him like a lifeline.
“I’m here,” he murmured, one hand running over your hair. There was no indication you heard his words.
One arm held you close to him as the other banged on the door, his mind showing a sequence of the last few minutes to everyone inside. He was beyond words, too fucking angry to try and explain.
The door flew open. His father, eyes a dark stormy night, anger rolling from him in waves, his mother’s anger matching, but switching to worry as she spotted you. Azriel and Mor were there as well, and Nyx vaguely registered his father grabbing them and disappearing.
His mother gently ushered them inside, Nyx lifting you into his arms - your body nearly frozen. As magic healed the small gash on your shoulder, as it made the blood disappear, he still held you close, still ran his fingers through your hair and said over and over again, “i’m here, i’m with you, you’re safe,” even as his mind wandered towards how soon he’d be able to get revenge on your behalf - revenge he knew you’d never seek out. Gods, you were more likely to try and show them mercy. Like hell that would happen on his watch.
“He said he was proud of me. He said he loved me. He cried.” Nyx jolted as you whispered, the first words in the last two hours. You’d fallen asleep on him - but he hadn’t moved an inch, not as people came and went out of the office. Nobody suggested he try and move you, nobody dared to get too close to you, not with his temper and protective instincts barely under wraps. As far as he knew, your father had never said those words to you. Nyx didn’t know how to reply, so he placed a kiss on your forehead. It was stupid to be mad at a dead male, but he wished the male would’ve told you as often as you deserved.
Nyx only left you alone after you were secured in a room warded as heavily as possible, impenetrable except by him or his family.
“We’ll need to talk to her, eventually,” his mother said carefully. His fists clenched at his sides, but he nodded.
“Did you get anything from the male?”
“Azriel’s working,” his father replied, eyes searching his face.
“I want to see,” Nyx insisted.
“You don’t need to see that,” his mother argued, but his father held his hand out, understanding flashing in his eyes. Nothing he hadn’t seen before, but she was still protective.
Apparently, his mother knew when she was fighting a losing battle. “I’ll keep an eye on her,” she promised. Nyx sent a grateful nod her way, and took his fathers hand.
By the looks of it, Nyx knew Azriel was conducting a special symphony of pain - one reserved for those who’d hurt people close to him. He watched, leaned back against the stone wall - arms crossed, as each word was pulled out of the male, resisting the urge to filter through his mind.
He waited to comment until Azriel packed up for the night, until the cell door had closed, a barrier in place - one the male wouldn’t hear beyond.
“What are you thinking?” the shadowsinger offered - not a demand or command, but letting him know he’d listen.
“They weren’t trying to kill her,” he tucked his hands into his pockets, hiding anger-induced shakes. “They wanted to get to me.”
“Yes,” Azriel confirmed. Hearing it from another was worse than his own mind. Would you hate him now, resent him? Being with him put you in danger, and he couldn’t live with himself if something happened to you.
Azriel read his expression easily enough - he was the only one who could. “Pulling away from her won’t keep her safe, not that they already know.”
Nyx exhaled slowly, “it’s my fault.”
“No,” the other male said sharply, insistently. “You’re not to blame.”
The words were futile, he’d keep blaming himself.
-
“I’m so sorry,” Nyx’s hand ran over your hair, your eyes blinking to adjust to the sun streaming through the windows. Why was he sorry? He was sitting next to you, you were laid in an unfamiliar bed, but you knew the hunch in his shoulders, the worry in his eyes.
The events of the previous day hit you, slamming into your mind, filling you with an unfathomable grief.
“There’s no reason to be,” your voice was hoarse and rough. “You saved my life.” An uncomfortable silence filled the room for a few minutes, and for once you didn’t have the energy to break it.
“It’s my fault they came for you,” you could feel the guilt in the statement, and knew exactly what was coming next. He’d try to leave - to ‘keep you safe.’ Nyx was stubborn as a mule, but this was something you wouldn’t budge on. Sure enough, he said, “you’re safer without me.”
Planting your palms on the mattress, you pushed yourself up to sit - the remnants of the sleeping tonic making the movements slower than usual. It was misplaced chivalry, some kind of attempt for him to be noble and assuage unnecessary guilt. Usually you were slow to anger, but this was enough to piss you off.
“Do you not like me anymore?” You asked. He blinked, surprised. “Are you not attracted to me?”
“Of course I am,” he stumbled over the words.
“Is there a valid reason you don’t want to be with me?”
“It’s not safe-”
“I don’t care,” you insisted.
“I can’t put you in danger,” he insisted.
You weighed the next words carefully, deciding what would get the best reaction. “Are you scared, Nyx?” A muscle in his jaw flexed. “If that’s the only reason you want to leave me, I won’t accept it.”The steadfast look in his eyes wavered, and you knew you had your in. “Tell me you don’t want me anymore.”
He shook his head.
“Say it,” you insisted.
“Of course I still want you,” he muttered. Evidently, he’d realized he wouldn’t get his way. Good.
Your body swayed as you reached for him, and he grasped both of your shoulders to steady you. There was the slightest twinge in your shoulder, thanks to the wound from yesterday, but besides that you were in good shape.
He noticed your small wince, and tried to move away, but you reached for him, cupping both of his cheeks, thumbs brushing over his cheekbones. Eyes fluttering shut, he let out a slow, slow breath.
“Until you have a good reason, you’re stuck with me,” you murmured.
“It’s not stuck,” Nyx groused, and rearranged the two of you, laying you down, head resting on his chest.
You hummed in content. The grief would come later, but for now you could lean into this moment, lean into his quiet strength.

AITA for visiting a restaurant after it changed ownership?
I (young adult, genders irrelevant for everyone in this story) have been living in the same neighborhood for most of my life, and I usually cook my own dinner. However, because my dad left the family when I was young, and my mom made me move out as soon as I was an adult, I wasn't completely prepared to live on my own, so I don't have a consistent source of income. I've had to move between apartments in the same neighborhood a lot, and sometimes when I'm in the process of moving it's really hard to cook my own dinner. The neighborhood is pretty isolated, so there aren't really many other places to get food, so I've mostly been hungry during those moving periods.
However, a few months ago, my friend R told me L, one of our neighbors I hadn't talked to before, was starting a restaurant business. She'd apparently started out by making food for her two children, S and O, who I'd seen around the neighborhood a few times and was vaguely familiar with, but realized her food was good and opened it up to the rest of the neighborhood for a low price. Of course, I was super excited to get to try someone else's cooking for the first time since I'd moved out, so R and I started visiting L's restaurant every now and then when I was moving or otherwise unable to cook. It's her secondary job, so she wasn't always there, but S and O also worked there and were friendly to us.
I thought it was a good arrangement... until I visited one day recently to find the door closed at a time when it's usually open. I would have just gone home, but it had been really rainy lately, I was under a lot of stress, and I didn't feel up to getting food for myself in those conditions, so I stood around for a few minutes, waiting to see if S or O would come out and explain. Instead, some people I've never seen before came into the lobby of the restaurant and just stared at me from inside. Instead of explaining anything to me or letting me in, they just laughed at me and took pictures of me? I was already really upset and that just made it unbearable to be around other people, so I left. I went back a few days later to double check if it was open, because I was still hungry, but the new people were still there, and I left even more quickly this time. I'm not proud of that- maybe I could have talked to the new people if I'd stayed longer instead of embarrassing myself, but I also feel like they were being really rude.
I asked R about it later to see if they'd talked to S or O lately or knew anything about what I assumed was change in ownership, but R didn't help at all. They told me that they hadn't seen S or O, but I shouldn't have expected the restaurant to stay open forever and that it was stupid of me to go back on the second day. I guess I can see how I might have been an asshole to go back, but I don't know what R meant about the restaurant. Is it because it's not L's main job? Were we the only customers and not giving her enough income to continue it for anyone but her kids? Or was the restaurant like... a front for money laundering or something? I really don't know. I'm hurt, hungry, and so confused. Was I in the wrong for bothering the new humans? Am I the asshole?

hey, how about a drabble/short fic inspired by the song "paper bag" by fiona apple with neil lewis?
Tumblr media
he couldn't stay | neil lewis
hi anon, absolutely. i hope you enjoy this little drabble! here's something little to hold u guys over while i work on a few other longer requests.
summary: you watch your childhood best friend who you've been in love with for years, fall for someone else.
warnings: angst of course, friends to strangers, overall sadness
word count: 720 words
masterlist
Tumblr media
you stared at the time on your phone mindlessly, feeling like you had just hit rock bottom. you felt alone and miserable, but also numb at the same time. life was unfair. love was unfair.
3:47 AM.
another sleepless night.
neil lewis had been your best friend since childhood and you thought that would never change, but it seemed that the universe had other plans. you never wanted things to end this way, but your friendship came to a screeching halt in the last few months.
you liked neil since you were in high school. the two of you were inseparable. you thought that your relationship would turn into one of those "friends to lovers" tropes, but it never did. maybe it was his fault, maybe it was yours - i guess you'll never know now, though. you felt like maybe if you had said something before, things could've panned out the way you hoped. but now it was too late.
he was with someone else now - he was with violet.
you remembered when neil broke the news to you a few months ago, and he broke your heart at the same time. you'd gone over to his place like you always did, ever since you were younger, and you two watched a movie together. about halfway through the movie, he turned to you to tell you something important. he called your name softly, causing you to pause the movie and listen to him.
"yeah, neil?" you asked softly, smiling sweetly at him.
"i forgot to tell you," he says, "do you remember that girl i went out on a date with a few weeks back?"
your smile slowly faded, and your heart silently broke as you started to lose hope. this couldn't be happening.
"um, yeah..." you say, trying to sound at least a little bit happy for him.
"i asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes," he beamed, "she's great. i want you to meet her soon."
you thought you were going to go crazy when he said these words to you, but you kept yourself composed even though you wanted to burst out into tears. you plastered the phoniest, fakest, most forced smile onto your face and "congratulated" him.
"wow," you say, feeling your heart shatter into a million pieces, "i'm so happy for you, neil. i'd love to meet her."
and that was the last time you two hung out - months ago. you hoped, and pleaded, and prayed that they wouldn't last, but your prayers went unanswered. they lasted, and on top of that, they were getting pretty serious. you heard from lucien that apparently neil thought she was the "love of his life."
you stopped visiting gumshoe video all together, and jonathan and lucien both texted you to see if you were okay, but after a while, you stopped responding. you started to hangout with your other friends, becoming closer to them and distancing yourself from neil, jonathan, and lucien. it hurt too much to be around neil, anyways.
as much as you tried to force yourself to get over it - you were still struggling to. it should've been you that he ended up with, not her. but you were the one who was too scared to confess your feelings to him; you knew that this wasn't really his fault because you should have said something. but now, you'll never know what could've been between the two of you because he was with someone else.
he was happier with someone else.
you stopped reaching out to him, and he stopped reaching out to you. it's not like he really tried, anyway. he was busy now - with the love of his life, or whatever. so, that was that.
maybe things were meant to fall apart so that they could fall back together again in the future, or maybe not. you hoped that one day your paths would cross again, but for now, you slowly faded into the background and became a stranger to someone you loved dearly, and he became a ghost to you.
even though they say time heals all, it seemed that all time was doing was just crushing your heart even more, along with any hope that you had of neil seeing you as anything more than just a friend.

It was the last weekend of your break and you had decided to spend the day at Haruhi’s today to cook a little and hang out just the two of you before you both had to go back to school. You knew that you’d be seeing each other in the host club, but it was nice not having to put up a front every now and then and to spend some time together, just the two of you.
Chatting happily, Haruhi and you had just gotten out of the convenience store to buy a few items, some tea and snacks, when suddenly a huge commotion right in front of her apartment complex caught your attention.
“Hm? What do you think is going on there?”, Haruhi asked, and you shrugged.
“No idea. Let’s go check it…”, you began, but your voice got caught in your throat as you spotted the Rolls Royce in front of her building and heard the voices of the passers-by. “What is this? Who’re these rich people?”
“Oh no”, Haruhi and you sighed in unison, looking at each other exasperatedly. You knew what would be coming.
“How dare they just show up unannounced?”, Haruhi already complained and dropped her grocery store bags, letting her head hang low.
“Are you really surprised, though?”, you asked back, watching the six boys get out of the car. When they got out of the car, you couldn’t help but notice how stylish they were dressed for a visit like this, and you sheepishly looked down at yourself. You had just thrown on the first best thing you had found in your wardrobe as it was not only Sunday, but also Haruhi had seen you in every state possible, so you really didn’t care anymore how you looked when you went over to her place. You suddenly felt very self-conscious.
This feeling didn’t get better when you heard what Kyouya was saying.
“No, this is what’s called a ‘commoners´apartment complex’. Haruhi’s place is probably just one of the rooms among these.”
He wasn’t wrong, that was exactly what it was, but you couldn’t help but wonder what that meant for how their houses must look like. You knew they weren’t even looking at your flat, but let’s face it, yours wasn’t a lot bigger than Haruhi’s and technically she lived in the better neighbourhood.
You looked at Haruhi, while Tamaki began yelling at Kyouya.
“We could just make a run for it, Haru, what do you think?”
She held up your groceries. “These will spoil, though, if we do not refrigerate them.”
“True that. Alright”, you agreed, accepting your fate. Maybe it could be fun to have them over. It was not like you didn’t like seeing them. Just maybe not today, when you really had wanted to talk to Haruhi about what happened on Okinawa. The entire weekend had left you emotionally agitated and you really needed to vent, eat lots of junk food and then argue with Haruhi, who saw everything always way too rational, about everything once again.
Your self-pity got interrupted by Tamaki who was now loudly proclaiming why they were here. “This is just a nonchalant visit, because we happened to be passing by, and it’s not to research Fujioka’s standard of living.” You could feel Haruhi become more annoyed with every single word he uttered. “The words shabby, cramped and run-down are absolutely forbidden.” Every word made you flinch a little in secondhand embarrassment.
“Yes, sir!”, the other’s complied, and you suddenly felt a gaze on you. When you looked up, you noticed that Kyouya was glancing over at you. He had noticed the both of you, but obviously preferred to stay quiet. Typical. Thinking about your phone call, you awkwardly nodded in his direction to greet him, and cursed yourself in the same second for how absolutely stupid that must have looked. You saw a smirk form on his face and quickly you averted your gaze, before you could turn bright red, looking back at Tamaki, who had still not noticed the both of you approaching.
“Under no circumstances are you to say or do anything that would make them want us to leave.”
“Well, it’s too late for that!”, Haruhi exclaimed, now highly annoyed, snapping you out of your thoughts about Kyouya. “Go away, right now!”
You awkwardly lifted your hand from behind of her to greet everybody. Haruhi’s brows were twitching and you realized she was slightly embarrassed, too. Although probably more of the spoiled rich kids treating her like a commoner in front of all of her neighbours. And yet, all they had to say to this was “That pink dress is so cute!” You hid your own outfit behind your grocery bag. Not everybody could look as cute as her all the time. Haruhi did not appreciate this comment, though and instead told them to shut up and get the hell out of here.
“Haruhi’s so mad, she actually cursed at us! This is your fault”, Tamaki immediately began to blame the twins, who did not seem to be realizing that they were part of the problem.
All of a sudden a middle aged woman approached Haruhi. “Excuse me, Haruhi, but is everything alright?”
“Oh, Hi Ms. Landlady”, you and Haruhi greeted her. You had seen her a few times before when you were around.
“Those young men are driving such fancy foreign cars, they’re not yakuza are they?”
You laughed embarrassedly. “No, they’re not …”
She seemed genuinely worried. “Do you want me to call the police for you?”
“Well actually”, you started to think but were interrupted by Tamaki grabbing the Landlady’s hand in his usual flirty manner. “Pleased to meet you madam. My name’s Suoh, I’m one of Haruhi’s friends.”
“Really?” She blushed. “My goodness, well aren’t you just adorable.”
That was one way to put it. Haruhi stepped back next you.
“And he’s got her.”
You nodded. “I can’t believe this keeps working.”
<p>After a lot of back and forth you had allowed all six hosts inside Haruhi’s small flat and they were now sitting and standing around the living room, looking and commenting on everything.
You listened to them bicker and sighed, helping Haruhi prepare the tea. This was really not how you had expected your Sunday to go and based on her expression neither had she. “Sorry about this, (y/n), let’s talk later, alright?”
You nodded, for some reason, slightly blushing, just in case Kyouya was actually smart enough to know that this was about him. “(Y/n), is this book yours?” You turned around looking at the devil you were speaking of, disassembling the bookshelf one title at a time and accidentally dropping an entire scroll to the floor. You had expected everyone else to make a mess, but him. “Yes. But would you please not touch everything?”
You took a deep breath to calm yourself down and turned around. Haruhi had brought the tea to the table and you noticed in awe that Honey had unpacked a generous selection of amazing looking cakes. Your gaze froze on them, they reminded you of the first cake he had given you on your first day and you remembered how delicious that had been. The glee must have been visible on your face, because the older host gently nudged the packaging closer to you.
“Haru-chan and (y/n)-chan can choose first!”, he exclaimed happily and the two of you looked at each other, equally excited about the treat you were about to get.
“Are you sure?”, Haruhi asked, and you stepped closer to get a better look, waiting for the answer. “Sure, we’re used to eating that stuff.” You didn’t even mind Hikaru’s comment, today you were not going to allow them to spoil your mood.
“Well then …”, Haruhi began thinking for second, “the strawberry one.”
“And you?”, Mori asked looking up at you from where he was sitting.
“Hm… if it’s alright, I think I’ll take the chocolate one then!” He smiled and nodded.
“I am going to get plates”, you said and moved over to the kitchen cupboard to get out eight plates and forks, distributing them. Honey carefully placed the cake onto them.
When you turned around again you realized that Kyouya had decided to sit between Honey and Mori and for a split second you wondered if he had done that on purpose. But your suspicions were short-lived, for the prospect of the cake in front of you let you forget everything else.
The oldest host smiled at you and patted the space next to him and you grinned back, positioning yourself between them.
Although you didn’t like to admit it, it was a bit crowded in here with eight people and when you sat down you felt your thigh touch Kyouya’s knee. Yet, he didn’t seem like he was going to move in any way. You took a deep breath, trying to ignore the touch of his leg against yours and everything related to that and instead took a bite of your cake. It was heaven. Happily you smiled and didn’t notice, that Kyouya was watching you from the corner of his eye, also very aware of the touch of your legs, but a small smile forming on his face nonetheless as he saw you this genuinely happy about something as small as cake. He didn't get to see such genuine joy often.
You just sat around for a while, eating the cake and talking, doing your best to focus on anything but the host next to you, when suddenly someone became peckish.
"After eating that cake, I am a bit hungry", Honey proclaimed and you raised an eyebrow. After the cake? But then again, it was Honey so you were not too surprised. You just wanted to suggest that this must mean they had to leave, when Tamaki and the twins replied, not realizing anything wrong with their utterances. You really liked them, but in moments like this you really wondered how any of them would survive on their own.
"Oh yeah, it's way past lunchtime", Hikaru confirmed.
“Is lunch ready?”, all three then asked in unison.
You took a deep breath. "You guys are another kind of spoiled."
"Yes, could you please stop living in your own world?", Haruhi added, but before anything could escalate again, you felt Kyouya shift next to you.
“Now, we’re the ones who dropped in on you without a warning, so we’ll pay.”
Surprised you looked up at him, as he was getting out his wallet. “Why not order some of your favourite sushi, or something?”, he suggested.
He looked down at you, waiting for a reply. “No, it’s fine, really”, you said, definitely not wanting to owe Kyouya anything, and Haruhi seemed to have read your mind. “Yes, really. I’m scared of what would happen if I let you treat me.”
“Yeah”, you agreed, but immediately kept thinking. Were you really scared? Part of you wanted to see what actually would happen to you. What he would ask of you and if… Quickly you looked back at the table. Enough.
Kyouya however did not react to your declination. Instead, he pulled out a golden credit card. “Not to worry. This comes out of sales of your photos we auctioned off.”
“Of course it did”, you sighed.
“Then isn’t this actually on me?”, Haruhi added.
“All right”, she proclaimed. “I have a friend who runs a nice sushi shop nearby. So I’ll give them a call. They’ll have some high-quality stuff.”
Tamaki handed her a note and Haruhi was reading it out loud, before throwing it out. "Even if the Sushi pack says 'premium' on it, you can't call it high quality. Be very careful." Haruhi didn't even turn around and just crumpled the paper up into a ball, trying to stay calm. “I know that.”
While Tamaki was having another existential crisis, Haruhi took the telephone, yet, could not even fully type in the number as Honey appeared in front of you, smiling brightly.
“I’d like to have something made by (y/n) and Haru-chan. Breakfast last time was just so delicious.” You smiled at him and somehow you couldn't even be mad. It was really kind of him to say that.
You all agreed that Haruhi and you would cook something and after a lot of back and forth you mentally braced yourself for a supermarket shopping trip with 6 hyped up hosts.
“I’ll wait outside”, you proclaimed, anxious to get out of the crowded space. You made your way down the stairs first, waiting a few steps away from the stairs to get some fresh air and some calm before you would have to deal with the rich kids in another confined space. You leant against the wall, eyes closed, when suddenly you felt a presence next to you.
“How have you been, (y/n)?”, he asked and surprised you looked up at him. You had not really expected him to so suddenly appear. And even less had you expected him to actually directly ask you how you were doing. And as if he had read your thoughts he added. “I don’t want you to have any remaining injuries that can be traced back to our private property.” Ah, now it made sense. You shook your head and couldn't hold back a small giggle. In return he raised an eyebrow. “What’s so funny?”
You shrugged. “I don’t know. The way you’re asking if I am alright, I guess.” Kyouya chose to leave this unanswered, and you looked back up at him. By now you had him figured out for the most part, you noticed. You shook your head. “I’m fine”, you said. “I am not going to sue you. This time.”
“Will be looking forward to the next lawsuit then.”
You scoffed. “Just you wait. Give me a couple more years to save the money for the lawyer and you’re going to be done for.”
A comfortably silence engulfed you for a second, when Kyouya spoke up again.
“Actually”, he said, leaning next to you against the wall, while still facing you. “I wanted to talk to you.”
“Hm?” He wanted to talk? About what?
“It’s about …”, he started but he didn’t get much further, for you heard screaming and a huge bang from Haruhi’s apartment.
“Tamaki”, you said in unison, before making your way back up the stairs to see what was going on.
When you entered the apartment together you did not only see Tamaki on the floor, though, but you realized that you had been so focussed on yourself and Kyouya that you hadn't even noticed Ranka coming home. You assessed the situation, Tamaki on the floor, twins grinning next to him and before you could say anything you were engulfed in a tight hug that obstructed your breathing a little more than would have been comfortable. “Aaaah, (y/n), you’re here, too, it’s been quite a while! I missed my second daughter so much!"
“I missed you, too… Ranka-san”, you managed to get out inbetween breaths, until she finally let go of you. You stumbled a few metres back, and bumped right into Mori, who thankfully stabilized you again.
"It has been way too long since you came to visit! Now come, come let's all sit together and have a little catch up!" When she said this, her gaze was darting between you and Kyouya, followed by a gaze like a dagger in the direction of Tamaki, who let out a gurgling noise, but you all complied.
Again crouched around the table you smiled at her. "So you're the host club, I keep hearing about!" You raised an eyebrow, and looked at Haruhi who just shrugged. 'Keep hearing' sounded like a bit too much information for whatever Haruhi would tell her father, so this was surprising to hear. The mystery was quickly solved though, when Ranka turned to Kyouya and the coin dropped. Of course, if he had been contacting your aunt, of course he had been contacting Ranka as well. You looked at him raising an eyebrow and whereas he did notice your judging glare, he kept his pokerface as usual. While you tried to pry the information out of his motionless features, Ranka continued without missing a beat. "You really are a fine set of boys, I don't know which one of you I want. Right, Haruhi? (Y/n)?" Tamaki was still sulking in a corner, while the rest of the hosts smiled at the compliments her father was giving them. "Oh, you can just call me Ranka-san. Ranka is the professional name I use at the drag bar I am working at!"
"Professional name?", Honey asked, "like a stage name?"
"That's right, Mitsukuni-kun."
"How do you know my name?"
At this point you were glaring daggers at Kyouya, while Ranka was listing the names of all the boys, but he still didn't move a muscle.
"Haruhi told you about us?", one of the twins finally asked, you were too focussed on trying to make Kyouya's face fall to pay attention to which one was speaking.
Finally Ranka admitted it. "No, Kyouya-kun tells me everything over the phone." He did not just act innocent, all of a sudden a smile spread over his face, as he pressed his hands against Ranka's. "You really are beautiful, Ranka-san." The man knew no shame. Everybody was freaking out, and Tamaki grabbed Kyouya, obviously feeling as betrayed about this as you.
"Did you know, (y/n)?", Kaoru asked, apparently realising that you were not as shocked by that as everybody else.
"He called my aunt, too", you mumbled, a little embarrassed that you didn't connect the dots and told Haruhi, too. For some reason it somehow bothered you that he had called Ranka about Haruhi as well, although you knew it was a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Of course you weren't special to him, after all it was just his professionality with these things. You began chewing on your lip and looking at the table top, scratching away a little dirt that had been left from the cake earlier.
You were lost so deep in your own thoughts, ignoring the usual commotion Ranka made, that only Haruhi grabbing your hand and pulling you up with her brought you back to reality.
"Where are you going?", Ranka cried out and you looked at Haruhi just as confused.
"The supermarket." She opened the door and you followed, grateful to be out of the house and away from the hosts for a while. You threw a last glance into the round and noticed Kyouya staring intently at you. He had noticed your shift in behaviour. Quickly you gulped, putting on your shoes to leave the house.
"We are going shopping, by ourselves. We'll be right back, so everyone, please behave yourselves." And with these words you left the flat, ignoring Hikaru yelling after you.
You were grateful that Haruhi had suggested you two should go to the supermarket together. Once outside you took a deep breath, glad about the calm for a second. You knew your pang of jealousy had been stupid, but it felt good being away from the situation nonetheless. Ranka made all that mess, she could deal with the boys for a while. And something told you she didn't mind either.
The walk to the market was comfortable, although you barely spoke about anything in particular. It was a very short walk after all and you mostly listened to Haruhi complaining about the nuisance Tamaki was being. You nodded, thinking about whether or not you should talk about what you wanted to talk about, but decided against it. There wasn't enough time and Haruhi had other worries. So instead you just said, "Thanks for taking me with you."
She smiled her usual sweet smile. "Of course. I felt like you needed a breath of air, too." You nodded, suddenly feeling very at ease again. Sometimes you forgot how well Haruhi knew you. "Come on, let's buy what we need. I will get the veggies and you can get whatever else you like."
You maybe had been at the supermarket for 5 minutes, when you began to spot familiar faces around. Of course. Smiling to yourself you remembered Ranka following you and Haruhi to places ever since. Haruhi never seemed to notice her and you never pointed it out, for some reason. You liked to leave Ranka to believe she was protecting her daughter well and now that she found her perfect replica in Tamaki, you had known it was just a question of time until he would show up here, too. And although you had prefered some calmness, somehow the way they all tried to hide, while simultaneously being overwhelmed by this very normal supermarket made you smile a little. Your gaze followed Honey who was pushed in a shopping cart through the store by more, when you suddenly spotted Kyouya looking at something with actual interest. For a second you hesitated about whether or not you wanted to talk to him, but then you saw him pack several glasses of spicy korean radishes in his cart and you sighed. These rich people.
Kyouya had to admit that he had never spent this much time in a commoner’s supermarket before. The chefs were taking care of meals and groceries, so usually he did not have to worry about food. If he wanted something, someone would bring it to him. Nonetheless, was this a rather interesting experience. He tried to remember some prices, to compare them to the market value later, when something caught his eye. Carefully he picked up one of the glasses and read the inscription. Spicy Radishes, Korean, harvested in Jeju Area. A memory flashed before his eyes, he remembered that he had eaten them a few times before. A korean housekeeper had brought them in a few times when he was a child and she would let him have some, whenever he got a little hungry. He smiled at this memory he had suppressed for so long, briefly wondering how she was doing today, but he quickly shook off such sentimental thoughts. Still his eyes darted back to the pile. Surprised he notice how cheap they were and after thinking for a short moment, he grabbed a few to place them in his cart as well. This all barely cost anything and he couldn’t help but be surprised by it. He took another one, when suddenly a well-known voice interrupted him.
“You like these?”, (y/n) asked, appearing behind him and picking up one glass out of his basket to give it a better look. Surprised about her sudden appearance, Kyouya hesitated for a second, before simply nodding. He noticed her gaze wandering over to the price tag, and she shook her head.
“Don’t get them all now”, you lectured him, placing the glass back into the shelf.
“But they’re so cheap. It is really quite peculiar. Furthermore, I am not sure if I will be back in such a store and the offer is too good, not to …” He got interrupted by her laughter for the second time today. Usually he would be quite annoyed, but for some reason he really enjoyed her laugh. Well, he knew it was because of his silly crush, but he still took a mental note of that.
“They’re not even on sale”, she interrupted, smiling up at him. Her smile was really beautiful. How her eyes closed ever so slightly and her eyebrows moved slightly downwards. He suddenly had to fight the urge to touch her face. “You’re rich after all, hm?” The smile seemed to falter a little, but only for a split second. Kyouya still noticed it. Yet, she was back to her old self before he could say anything. “You can buy some now, but I’ll get some for you once they are on sale!”
He looked down at her, not sure what to say, but he nodded, nonetheless.
“Come on. Let’s see what else we can get for lunch!”
His gaze followed her as she vanished behind one of the store shelves, before his look fell back on the glass he held in his hand, carefully placing it back, while smiling to himself. “Not on sale, huh…” He looked at the radishes one last time, before following her, curious what else this commoner’s supermarket had in store.

{lovesick - kuroo t.}
“I pictured you with other girls in love… then threw up on the street.”
gn!reader
warnings: fluff!!! minor angst but don’t worry it’s resolved very quick!!! also, despite the lyric I’m using, there’s no throwing up in this fic, just mentions of it/feeling nauseous. I think I debated scrapping this this like 3 times. tried a new writing style (intentional tense changes) lmk what you think!!
...I might actually write for this specific lyric for other characters too, I have a lot of pent up feelings about it clearly...
Tumblr media
there comes a point in your relationship with kuroo tetsurou that makes you question everything.
that point, unfortunately, came in your last year of high school when he stared at you a little too intently while you were laughing at one of his stupid jokes. one he’s told many times over the years, but still always managed to get you.
he grinned at you as you calmed down and you hated the way your heart thumped at the lingering amusement and fondness in his eyes.
you hated the way you were both silent after, eyes locked and no words spoken.
you hated the way his expression turned soft as if he had just had come to a satisfying realization. you knew what that meant because you were sure yours was identical.
in that moment, you hated that you had both finally accepted that maybe, just maybe, there was more to your friendship.
because it meant you had even more to lose.
cut to your second year of university. your relationship hadn't really progressed any further than the in between of friends and more.
but that in itself was a step forward because it meant your interactions were had with the unspoken agreement that you would end up together.
you didn't go to the same school anymore- you stayed in tokyo for university and he moved away for his program.
you still saw each other often enough, though, when he would visit home either during free weekends or for holidays.
kenma also stayed in tokyo, at a different university, but he was closer than his best friend that’s for sure. most friday nights were spent with him, either on call with kuroo or physically with him when he visited as kenma played video games.
everything was the same but everything was different.
kenma commented on how gross kuroo’s obvious displays of affection for you were, something he never had to do over the years.
and you'd just ignore him, obviously, but get a little giddy inside that kuroo was being so open with his fond stares and hands that were always touching you somehow.
with that confirmation that maybe you wouldn't lose him, you grew to love how his expressions turned soft for you.
you loved how your heart would beat just a bit faster (often in time with his, as you found out when he would grab your hand and place it over his chest so you could feel his) when you saw each other after a while.
you loved that you were falling in love with him, and accepted the fact that maybe you always were.
along with your excitement that one day kuroo would be yours, there was an underlying fear that you were taking too long with this game you were playing. dancing around each other, teasing, flirting- only with each other, it never extended to other people. but still...
what if he gets bored and finds someone else? what if while he’s away for school, you drift apart? the higher you go with your education, the busier you’re bound to be… what if he stops coming to visit and the dynamic you have now falls apart?
all these thoughts bubble over and make themselves known on a night out a few weeks later.
kuroo’s home again, for a week this time, and you decide to get a group of people together at a club. included are bokuto and akaashi, kenma opting to pass for his games, and one of your friends from high school.
you’re slightly drunk, giggling with her about one thing or another when the topic of conversation turns to him. she looks over at him, dancing with bokuto, as akaashi watches them from the sidelines, exasperated.
“you’re pretty good friends with kuroo, right?” she asks.
a dopey grin makes its way onto your face at the mention of his name (against your will) and you nod.
“well get this- my friend goes to the same university as him, they have a class together, and she’s thinking of asking him out after the break.”
your face falls and you’re sucked into a state of panic.
realistically, you have nothing to worry about. if earlier that day was any indication of how kuroo still felt about you, he would turn this girl down. his warm hands on your cheeks as he pressed kisses to your forehead in greeting at the train station. his hand in yours when you walked from the car to your apartment where he’s staying for the week.
(the logical thing to do here would be to tell her that you and kuroo are unofficially a thing, so he's kind of off limits, but you're too tipsy for logic at this point.)
"do you think he's looking for anything right now?"
your friend tries to get your attention, but you can't hear her. you stare at him from across the room and pictures of him cuddled up with this stranger flash through your mind, kissing her how you've always wished he'd kiss you, being pushed to the sidelines in his life as he moves on-
before she can call out to you again, you’re already dashing to the washroom, nausea settling into your stomach at the thought of him possibly falling in love with someone else. you haven’t had enough alcohol to make you sick, which makes it all worse. this feeling is here because you're in love. and want him to be yours. and he might be ripped away from you.
some might call it a newly developed strain of lovesickness.
you’re unaware that he follows you after seeing you dash in between him and bokuto.
you lock yourself in the large stall and crouch to the ground, head in your hands. making an attempt to steady your breathing, you inhale deeply and exhale slowly.
a knock on your stall can be heard. "y/n? are you in here?"
"yeah." your voice is quiet, but thankfully the music has faded to a dull thumping so he's able to hear it.
"can I come in?"
you don't know how to answer that, but you ponder on it for a second too long, apparently, because now he's stepping onto the toilet seat of the next stall over and climbing over into yours.
you look up at him pitifully and he sighs. "what's up, buttercup?"
there's no use waiting any longer. you tug on his sleeve and he moves closer, wrapping an arm around you. "my friend's friend wants to ask you out after the break and I felt sick just thinking about it."
you don't look at him when you say it, but you can hear the barely contained joy in his voice at your confession. "yeah? you don't want me to date anyone else? you finally staking your claim on me?"
he pulls you closer to him when you nod. "good. I was getting worried I'd have to be the one to give in first."
you slap his arm and he laughs. "tetsurou," you say.
"hmm?"
"I'm not going to be the one to ask you officially, that's on you."
"that's fine, I was going to anyway. I've been waiting a long time for this, baby."
you finally look up at him. "yeah?"
he grins down at you and the look in his eyes has once again gone completely soft, just for you. "oh yeah."
he shifts a bit until you're both facing each other on the (probably dirty) bathroom floor of a tiny club in tokyo and asks the question you've been yearning to hear since that day in your last year of high school.
"y/n, will you do me the honour of officially being mine?"
"well obviously," you say and finally kiss him.
Tumblr media
BONUS:
kuroo's last day at your apartment came far too quickly.
but the days after your confession were the best days you've ever spent with him. neither of you wanted to say goodbye, conversations were had about doing semi-long distance and you were both more than willing.
that didn't stop you from trying to get him to stay in your bed a bit longer.
"y/n, come on, I have to get ready to go to the train station," he laughed as you clung to him.
"no." was your only response, and you wrapped around him even tighter. he was sitting on the edge of your bed, trying to put a shirt on, but your arms were locked around his torso.
"baby, please, I promise if you let me get up and dressed at the very least I'll come back and we can cuddle a bit longer.
he felt you smile a bit into his skin at the use of the pet name. he had been experimenting with them throughout the week and he had concluded based on your reactions to them that baby always made you smile and look away, sweetheart made you nuzzle into him and whine, and the one time he called you gorgeous you shivered and almost dropped a glass of water out of excitement. of course there were others that had good reactions, so he had a full arsenal of names to call you now.
"hmmm, but tetsurou, we both know that you could have easily gotten me off of you by now if that's what you really wanted,"
however nothing compared to how he absolutely melted into you whenever you said his name like that, in that tone.
he turned and pounced on you, reveling in your giggly shrieks as he nibbled on your neck. your arms wrapped around his bare shoulders.
"if I'm late it's going to be your fault, sweetheart, and I will make you regret it."
"so menacing, I'm terrified- NO!" you were cut off by a new string of laughter and pleading for him to stop as his hands attacked your sides.
if being late meant more time to hear your laugh and feel your skin, maybe kuroo would just give in and catch the 5 o'clock train instead.

Joel was trying.
He was trying to tamp down the anxiety he knew would thrum in his veins the second the gates of Jackson closed behind him. Back out in the unknown and unpredictable landscape. Winter was granting him a passive day, no snow, no biting wind, cloud coverage clear for the sky to shine a light blue to crystal clear you would think it was a brisk summer day. But the pause in extreme weather aside from the near freezing temperature did nothing to quell the pulse beneath his skin.
He was alone, traveling with a teenager he had come to care about in a dangerous way.
The journey had been meant to be made with Tess, first. Strong-willed, no-nonsense saint of a woman for taking what he could offer her and not asking for anything in return. Just wanting to share space and renown within a controlled setting that allowed for them to execute their runs and make what passed for a decent living back in what was left of the quarantine zones. To share their bodies when human nature sparked connection in the oldest and most instinctual of ways. She had turned an eye to his abuse of the very same things they traded for food, for water, for supplies for their shabby apartment that had seen far better days before they stepped foot inside.
Then journey was then meant to be made with you. A surprise in the moments after her death. Skilled in many things and willing to help a man suddenly saddled with a teenager he had no clue how to interact with. But he had, once upon a time. The situation tasting of irony and self-destruction. Selfless to the point of disembarking on your own path in the wake of his own attempt at running when faced with something too real for the world. Maybe in the Before times, it would have worked out. Perhaps a meet cute as he delivered his brother to an urgent care for a drunken blunder, a work accident he himself fell victim to, or a begged visit for Sarah should she had fallen off her bike or taken a tumble in soccer practice. Maybe then it would have been given life, hopeful glances and lingering touches that would have turned into nervous dates. Nervous dates that would give way to regular familiarity and then heated nights beneath sheets of his bed.
But it had never shouldve blossomed in the now, in the after. And yet, it had tried.
Ellie was mad. She wasn’t trying.
Not the first day at least.
Speaking when spoken to, ire and hurt flaring uncomfortably in moments he could sense weren’t aimed at him. At least not completely. Aimed at you, for going back on your word. Something you wouldn’t have had to do if he hadn’t screwed up so monumentally by falling for you. He had been wrong in his accusations, throwing the proposition you made to him all those days ago back in your face. Like you had forced yourself on him, forced him into thinking of you that way, of wanting you that way. But it had been him, his decision to take you up on it in his grief. Wanting to feel something other than the gaping hole that seemed to eat up more and more of him as the years went by.
But instead of just taking his body in the ways he allowed you to, you had also begun to heal that black hole he was made up of. Slowly and so minimally at a time that he hadn’t noticed until it was too late.
He stopped and made the time to teach her how to shoot the rifle, hoping it would help to bring her out of her shell. And it worked, he silently thanked the universe, it worked. She was cracking jokes and quipping like normal. Mirth lighting up her eyes and questions flowing from her. And he indulged them, as best he could. Telling her of how he supported himself before the world fell apart. About how he always dreamed of singing and making music.
But just as everything seemed to be on the mend, it was broken once again.
With the crack of a wooden bat.
Tumblr media
“A-Angelo?” You voice was as shaky as your reaching hands, fingers brushing against the man’s face only a few steps away. He was older, that much was certain. Only a year apart back then, back when the world functioned in an entirely different way. Only a year apart, but two decades of time separating you now, turned into completely different people. A wave of emotions at finding your family by pure chance and circumstance in the wilds of a state you had never been to before while on your way to look for them hit hard. You both surged forward and embraced, the man’s arms coming around you and tightening.
“I thought it was you, the hair,” He choked out, deep voice cracking. He was so broad, tall frame looming over you, developed fully into a man who had survived the worst of nature and humanity. Just as you had grown into a woman who took nothing of ill nature aimed at you, taking the things that had happened to you and using it as a foundation to be stronger.
“It’s me, I’m okay.” You gripped his shoulders tight, pushing him back a little to look him over.
“No injuries, no bites, you’re okay?”
“Yes, yes, I’m okay….We both are.”
That’s when your mind decided to remind you of the other voice you heard, the feminine one.
A young girl, no more than her teens and far too skinny was half concealed behind a tree trunk a few yards away. Her eyes were brown, honey brown and beautiful and they reminded you of so many people lost to space and time. They shown just as Taylor’s had done, once upon a time. Like you had both talked of wishing to see on a bright new, chubby face…
“Oh.” The phantom jolt of a kick felt through the skin of your aunt’s stomach so many years ago sprung to life in the palm of your hand. “Oh, Angelo. I’m-I’m so sorry.”
He detached from you, taking a few steps toward the girl, now in between you both equally. He held out a hand to her, his gloves tattered and stitching frayed in certain places.
“It’s okay, she’s okay. She’s family.”
“You’re so beautiful,” You gently coached her out, hoping nice words would help her to feel safe. “I’ve never met you, but I’ve waited a very long time to. You- you can call me by my name or Bean, if you’d like?”
“This is our cousin, from mom’s side. Do you remember her saying that we needed to go East?”
A small nod, wide eyes taking in the situation.
“It was to find her. She’s good, smart, she can help keep us alive.”
“You’ve been doing good on your own.” She didn’t move, not taking a step to back away and put distance between you nor toward you in a hesitant greeting. Her wide brown eyes were alert, telling of the things she’d experienced and been witness to. Of how cautious she was in the face of new people, a good thing to be but completely unwarranted in this particular case.
“Yes, but…Adela, we…we need help. This season, it’s harsh and we don’t know this land as well.”
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, I know we’re practically strangers but we are related. I know that doesn’t mean much these days to some people, but it means a great deal to me. I will do everything in my power to protect you, just like your brother.”
Hours later, after a shared meal and an introduction of your gifted appaloosa, camp was made and secured. Adela was fast asleep, one of the blankets you had tucked underneath the saddle wrapped around her small frame inside her sleeping bag. Light snoring sounding from the bundle she made against the horse.
“We’re the only ones that made it.” Angelo said before you could even figure out how to ask after everyone. Outbreak day a rather taboo subject amongst those that survived it. For Joel, at least, for you it was easier to divulge but still not a light subject to talk about. You had been willing with Ellie, with Maria.  The first to quell her curious questions, to allow her another perspective on the events before her time that shaped the world into the one that she knew. The second to appeal to her, to connect with someone who felt comfortable.
“We didn’t know anything was going on for a while, you know how it is working in a ware. house all day. But when I got home that evening, apparently grandma had passed during the morning. Scared the hell out of everyone when she came sprinting into the living room and lunged at dad.”
“I…I can’t imagine, I’m so sorry. I know I had a missed call from the house that day, but I had been running late. And then, you know….”
“It’s okay,” One of his gloved hands reached out, taking the closest one of yours and squeezing. “We both made it, Adela made it. I love our family and cared so much for everyone, but this world is too harsh for them. It was always going to be us and that’s the only comfort I have in what happened.”
Silently agreeing, you squeezed his hand back. He was right, your grandparents had softened in their age, his parents and your father caring for them together. Soft in their endearment too, not suited for a life of constant unrest, of constant fear and paranoia. Of scrounging for food and basic supplies, having to defend what was yours by any means necessary.
Tumblr media
“I was traveling with a man from Boston QZ and a girl, we were trying to find her family out this way. The last lead would’ve taken us to the University of Eastern Colorado.” You admitted over dinner the next day, having taught Adela the basics of how to properly interact with a horse, how to climb up in the saddle. While she was tall, she was skinny. Alarmingly so, but Angelo assured you that he always made sure she had enough to eat. He was willing to go without to provide for her, to ensure her still growing body had as much as it needed, or close to it at least.
“We were just there,” He took a breath, savoring the smell of the coffee that you had brewed for him as you all settled around the fire for the night. Scraps of foil that had contained easy, portioned meals to through on the fire that Maria had provided you with. “Well, around there. We came across a group of people settled into an old lodge town. Not to far from the city actually.”
Something about the man’s tone had you delaying your questions until Adela had laid down to rest for the night, tired from the day of interaction. But she was warming up to you, a familiar comfortability between you both as you talked to her about her mother. She admitted quietly that Angelo wasn’t willing to talk about their parents, people she had never had the chance to meet. The chaos of Outbreak day and those following it too much for him to talk about.
“We-uh, we left the group pretty quickly.” The man cleared his throat, turning around to ensure that his little sister was indeed asleep and not feigning it in order to eavesdrop. “The leader, god – what was his name? It doesn’t matter, he was so nice at first. Preaching about how people need to stick together, that his flock chose him to lead them and look after them.”
Your heart sank to your stomach, religious fanatics always putting you on edge. The way they manipulated the words of the bible in order to further their own agenda. And the way Angelo described him as initially nice and welcoming. A ploy, a trap laid out to ensnare people.
“But the first morning there, he came to visit us in the small set up they provided us with. Asked Adela to go out on a walk with him while I was still asleep. She hadn’t wanted to go, but felt obligated. Like he was just going to give her a tour or somethin’ and it was harmless, ya know?”
The rush of blood in your ears was loud, but you strained against it, needing to hear the words coming from the man beside you.
“He- that motherfucker, he exposed himself to her. Said that if she wanted to stay and use their resources that she needed to earn her keep. She begged me to leave right that second, to gather our stuff and make a run for it. But I don’t her we needed to act like nothing happened, to wait until nightfall and take what we could. So we did….but if you said you were traveling with a girl…brown hair, short, scar in her eyebrow?”
“Yes.” You breathed out, body thrumming with fear. No….no…there was no way Ellie could’ve been taken by the same men. She wouldn’t willingly go with anyone, had been hesitant to even let you or Joel out of her sight for too long….That meant…Joel had to have been injured in order for them to steal her away from him.
“She was unconscious, they were…they were carrying her into the settlement.”
Your head shot up, drink spilling over your hands cupped around the thermos.
“No.” You stood, hands steady despite the flood of emotions raging around in your mind. “No, no, no. I know those people, without them I wouldn’t have made it back out this way. We traveled from the other coast.”
It was late, but you didn’t care. You were gathering everything you needed, your pack and half of the food supply.
Adela roused at the noise, springing up and reaching for your hands.
“No, please, don’t leave us. We’ve lost too much already.” Tears were in her wide eyes, tugging at your heart in more ways than one. You crouched down in front of her, clasping your gloved hands around her own. Giving her your undivided attention.
“Honey, please, listen to me. I’m- I – I don’t want to leave you two, but I have to. Please understand. The girl that you saw, that was…she’s important to me. And she needs my help. I’ll see you again, I promise. I swear to you, Adela, I will see you again. Behind the walls of Jackson, we can…we can have a life there.”
Standing, you pulled her into a tight embrace.
“I’ll tell you embarrassing stories about your brother from when we were little.”
Pulling the map from your pocket, you circled the spot for Jackson with a marker.
“Here, this map will get you back to a settlement. Jackson. It’s large, has walls, it works. Ask for Maria or Tommy, tell them my name and that I sent you. Tell them you’re my family, you are. Take this,” You moved to wrap your old coat you had draped over your lap over the small frame of the girl and push the map that would lead them back to Jackson in the man’s hands.
The man surged up and gripped you tight in a bear hug, his body wrapped completely around you like he would do ever since he had begun to tower over you as children.
“Please, be safe!”
“Seek refuge in Jackson. I’ll return there, I promise.” You urged as you mounted the horse, reigns tight in your hands.
You clicked your tongue and tugged hard, urging the horse forward. The sound of hooves beating on the frozen ground was the only sound in the quiet, frozen night.

The remains of the a few bodies were scattered about the derelict campus that had been the destination sought out by them. Joel and Ellie. Those you were searching for nowhere to be seen, only hints of them in the bullet casings, the torn-up dirt, a bat broken in half- the jagged ends of one piece soaked in a deep red stain of blood. Joel’s, if your cousin’s words and your spiraling thoughts were correct.
Internally cursing at the man for pulling it out, for not waiting for a better moment, for not thinking in the haze his mind must’ve been.
Just as you began to trace the trail of rather fat droplets, you heard the crunch of someone stepping on fallen leaves behind you. Before you could even turn around completely to face them, someone was wrapping their arms around your neck, cutting off your air.
Your last thought was of Angelo and Adela. Of Joel and Ellie.
‘It was hot. Sweltering. And your dress was too tight over your swollen middle. It was a small bump, barely visible from the front, more so from the side. You had thought you indulged in too much food one evening after a deer had been caught but the teasing jab soon delved into something more serious. Especially when the swelling hadn’t gone down in the following days and nausea became a morning ritual.
You had been ecstatic, a first for you. And exciting thing you had always wanted. A faint thought you hadn’t entertained even in a working world, a notion you hadn’t thought possible at all with the demise of the world. When you had told him, Taylor had shared in your excitement, immediately beginning to hoard everything he could loot from the nearby state park. Gathering everything you could use, whether it was to repurpose it or store it for the future.
You had found a pocket of happiness and security in the rubble of the world, hidden deep in the forests of Tennessee in the form of a man who welcomed you into his space when all you had wanted to do was run. Finding yourself injured and needing aid, he had offered it to you.
What had begun as a small stay to ensure you would heal okay, that your stitches were secure and wouldn’t pull. But the conversations that flowed from one to another over those first few days tied you to each other. Braiding together your futures in such a wonderful way. There was no way to know how badly the universe would fray the untethered strings.
The only consolation was that the nights were cooler, the evenings and mornings twinged with a chill that signaled the end of an unseasonable warm fall. But as time moved on, Taylor had pleaded with you to consider staying close to the cabin. You had agreed, the symptoms of your pregnancy making it hard to do much of anything for long. Hunting and patrolling far too much for you to handle at the moment.
You were tending to the horses when he appeared behind you, arms snaking around your shoulders. The tickling of his facial hair sprouting giggles from you. The horses snickered, sharing in your delight. After securing them back in the modest stable, large hands were wrapping around you and sweeping you off of your tired feet.
“C’mon, princessa, let’s go have a nap.”
“But I don’t wanna,” You whined, not wanting to waste the sunshine while it was still showing, winters notoriously gray and overcast in this part of the region. The looming mountains casting dark shadows over pockets of land. Thankfully the cabin wasn’t in one of those regions, hidden well by the tall trees and stained a dark green all along the roof to avoid searching eyes to those at a higher altitude.
“Who said we were gonna sleep, silly girl?” Taylor swooped down to kiss you fully on the lips. Stirring warmth in your core. With a deep laugh at the chasing of your lips after his, he carefully rushed up the stairs and through the front door. “I’m gonna devour you, you’re too good looking a snack to leave untouched.”
“Oh hush,” You curled your hands into the long hair he had tied into a bun at the back of his head. Taking the band from around it and causing the strands to cascade around his handsome face.
“Glowing and full of me, carrying our baby in your pretty little tummy. Good god, you’re constantly on my mind, princessa, you’re my entire world.”
“And you’re mine, mi amor.”
Bubbling giggles flowed through the cabin as he made his way up the stairs and through the small landing. Into the bedroom that you found happiness in the midst of the fallen world.’

Part 1.

It had been exactly three weeks since the last time that Casey had been in Alex’s apartment, after that day, both women had tried to avoid each other as best as they could, focusing on their cases and separately doing their jobs in their offices. Whenever they happened to find each other in the precinct, they just said a respectful ‘hello’ and move on to what they were supposed to do. The squad of course had been oblivious about it, Casey and Alex had done such a good job in hiding their relationship that they didn’t find it weird at all that they were not exactly close or friends at all, but the one person that had noticed the whole thing had been Olivia; after all, Olivia was normally who visited their offices along with Elliot, but Olivia somehow knew both women better than anyone else, so when she noticed the weird interactions that they were having, she started to question if something had happened, but never said a thing knowing that both women were private with their lives out of work.
Casey had tried her best to keep herself distracted with work and going to the cages after work or every other day that she had some free time. The moment she got back to her apartment, her own words kept repeating in her mind and she felt guilty for a moment, thinking that maybe she had made a mistake and that she had not meant what she had said at all. But she had thought that it was better to say it out loud before it was too late; mostly to avoid herself from falling into something that she wouldn’t be able to recover from. The times she saw Alex at work, she noticed blue eyes glued to her and she knew she did the same, but both of them were now avoiding each other and Casey thought that it was probably for the best. She would be lying if she said she didn’t miss spending her time with Alex, after all, two whole years with her had not been just nothing, and she was trying to convince herself that she had saved herself from a heartbreak; truth was…she felt like she was going through one at the moment.
When the squad went out for drinks, it was normally Casey or Alex who went with them, never together. But this time, they had asked them separately, mostly because they just wanted to celebrate the big victory that they both had with their cases. and they thought celebrating together wouldn’t be bad at all. And it so happened that both ADA’s got there at the same time and the faces they made when they saw each other made the squad figure out that maybe after all, it hadn’t been a good idea to invite them at the same time. Casey was the one that tried to play it as if nothing was going on and went ahead to sit with the squad, engaging in a conversation with Munch and Fin right after. Alex, on the other hand, didn’t know what to do with herself so she went ahead to sit in the middle of Elliot and Olivia, trying to focus on what they had to say it.
“I invite next round!” Fin said as he started pulling out his wallet.
“No, no. I got this one, you got the next one.” Casey smiled as she stood up and walked to the bar.
Munch looked at Alex and raised his brow. “Did we do a mistake on inviting Novak?”
Alex furrowed her brows as she looked at all of them. “Why would you ask me that? We work together.” She chuckled.
“The stares you gave each other when you two walked inside at the same time said otherwise.” Fin took a sip of his drink. “Do we got beef or something with her?”
“Guys.” Alex chuckled. “Casey and I work together, we see each other every day at work, so it was just surprising to see each other outside work, I guess.”
Olivia frowned. “You guys used to have lunch together, you don’t anymore?”
Alex felt her heart stopping for a moment as she looked at Olivia. “We’ve…been busy. Focusing on our own cases.”
Olivia nodded as she shrugged. “No, that’s…understandable.”
“Seems like Novak is getting out of here with someone.” Elliot furrowed his brows as he stared at them.
“You really gonna stare at him the whole time he talks to her?” Munch huffed a laugh.
“Need to make sure is safe, you know?” Elliot shrugged.
“I believe Novak can protect herself, and we will all make sure she’s safe.” Fin nodded as he looked back at Casey.
Alex took a deep breath as she stared back at the bar, directly at Casey. She knew she didn’t have to feel this way, they were not involved anymore, and even if they were still involved in some way, she knew that there was never a thing that stopped them from being with other people. She had thought about it while they were still meeting each other at night, she wondered if Casey was seeing anyone else other than Alex, maybe those days were they didn’t see each other, she met with someone, or whenever she took longer to get to the bar, maybe she took the chance to talk to other people. Back then, the thoughts were there but they didn’t do anything to her because she knew that at the end of the day, she was the one that had Casey in bed with her; she was the one kissing her, feeling her, touching her, it was her name that came out of her mouth in a raspy tone when she came undone. But now, she felt jealousy. Casey could be with anyone now and maybe with them, she’d want to have something serious. The jealousy only became worse once she saw how the guy slipped a card to Casey and then left, and Casey had a faint smile, but the smile was there.
“Casey Novak getting a man.” Fin whistled once Casey returned to their table.
Casey rolled her eyes as she grinned. “Not gonna happen.” She said as she handed everyone their drinks.
“Ah, c’mon, Case. Why not? You’re single, you’re allowed to have some fun, you know?” Elliot teased her as he grinned.
“That’s…not my thing.” For a moment, Casey looked up at Alex and then back at her drink, taking a sip of it.
Alex stared at her until she noticed she had done it for longer than she had meant to, so she did the same and finished her drink. She then reached for her purse and grabbed some money, putting it on the table. “Sorry guys, I’m gonna call it a night.”
“Cabot, Cabot, Cabot…we are supposed to be celebrating both your victories!” Munch remarked as he raised his brow.
Alex huffed a chuckle, shrugging as she stood up and grabbed her purse and coat. “I know, but…I have an early morning.” She nodded. “But thanks guys, next round is on me.” She smiled before she walked away.
Casey’s eyes followed Alex until she walked out of the bar. Part of her wanted to go behind her but she knew better than to do that. As the squad joked, Casey couldn’t help but look down at the card that the guy had given her, wondering if Elliot was right and she could have some fun, but the reality was, that she didn’t want the guy; she wanted Alex. She looked back at the door and thought for a second time if she should go after Alex, she could still catch her maybe, or she could just simply drive to her apartment. She could. But she was not going to.
********************
Alex took a deep breath as she walked down the hallway with a coffee in hand, convincing herself that she could do this and even if this could turn the wrong way, she at least tried. After she got back to her apartment two days ago, she spent all night thinking about what had happened back in the bar. When Casey had stared at her after saying that it was not a thing she did, she figured out that Casey really had meant that; there had been a night where Casey had confessed that it was actually her first time accepting to go home with someone she had just met, of course she knew who Alex was, but even then, they were strangers before they talked for hours, and accepting to go home with her, had been unexpected for her. And that’s when it hit Alex that maybe, just maybe, there had been a whole misunderstanding in what had happened with them, and she could let it happen, she could let it die there and pretend that nothing ever happened with them, but Alex decided that night that she was not going to let that happen, and she was going to make everything in her hands to show Casey that it was not nothing for her.
Alex knocked on the door softly, a small smile on her face as she saw Casey. This felt so familiar and yet, she was so nervous. “Hi.”
Casey looked up from her paperwork and for a moment her words got stuck in her throat, but as she cleared her throat, she offered a small smile back. “Hi. Need something?”
“No uh…” Alex huffed a chuckle as she looked down at the coffee. “The coffee shop I went to…they made two drinks by mistake, so they gave them both to me. Thought I could do my good deed of the day and bring you some coffee.” She walked to Casey’s desk and placed it in a safe space so it wouldn’t mess with her paperwork.
Casey raised her brow as she looked at Alex for a moment and then at the coffee, grabbing it and carefully taking a sip. “And…it so happened to be my favorite, huh?”
Alex raised her brows. “Oh really? What an odd thing, don’t you think?” She grinned as she walked to the door.
Casey couldn’t help but smile softly as she placed the coffee back on the desk. “Thanks, Alex.”
Alex turned to look at Casey, smiling softly. “You welcome. See you around.” She winked at her before she left.
Casey felt that tingle in her stomach as Alex winked at her, her eyes following Alex until she disappeared from her sight. She nibbled on her lip as she looked back at the coffee, a small laugh leaving her lips as she shook her head. She would’ve believed the excuse maybe if it had been a different coffee, if it had been similar to Alex’s order, or maybe if she was tired enough that she’d believe that unicorns existed, but the look on Alex’s face, the grin, her words…she had done this on purpose and she had actually thought of buying Casey a coffee. And it made her feel warm, something she was not supposed to feel, but here she was; stupidly smiling at the coffee.
********************
The next time Alex showed up in Casey’s office with something in hands, it had been Casey’s favorite coffee along with her favorite dessert. She had used the same excuse as last time, but it was even more evident that she was now playing with that excuse, and she was simply going to Casey’s office with excuses. Was she there to see her? Did she want something? Casey was a little confused as to what was happening, but she would be lying if she said she didn’t like these unexpected visits, the silly excuses, and the beautiful smiles that Alex gave her. And then she remembered why she had confronted Alex in the first place and rethought her decisions of that day; had she had done that out of jealousy because she saw Alex with Oliva? Had she acted out of anger? Had she said those things just because she wanted to ignore her feelings? Casey was afraid to answer those questions, she was afraid to figure out the real reason why she had done what she did, but again…she couldn’t let herself get lost in thought. She couldn’t let Alex in.
Alex knocked on the door and smiled softly. “Hello.”
Casey looked up and smiled. “Hey you. Thought I was the only one in the office.”
“I finished some paperwork, so I didn’t take it home. Thought I saw a light here and wondered if you were still here.” Alex raised the bag in her hand and grinned. “I’m sure you haven’t had anything to eat.”
“You know me so well.” Casey grinned as she got up and cleaned the table beside her desk, signaling to Alex that she could walk in.
“Still have a lot of work?” Alex asked as she placed the bag on the table, taking out the boxes of food and the chopsticks.
“Not a lot. I was just reviewing some files and making sure my notes were right for tomorrow’s trial.” Casey smiled as she sat down, grabbing the box that Alex was handing her. “Why didn’t you just go home?”
Alex shrugged as she sat down, looking down at her food. “I didn’t want to go home just yet.” She said almost in a whisper, looking up at Casey. “Plus, I brought you dinner.” She grinned.
Casey chuckled as she nodded. “And the perfect order. Thank you.” She smiled.
Alex nodded. “So…did you…ever used that phone number?” She raised her brow as she looked at Casey.
“What number?” Casey tilted her head.
“The guy at the bar?”
“Oh.” Casey laughed as she shook her head. “No. I didn’t. Not a thing I do.” She grinned as she looked at Alex and then down at her food.
“Right.” Alex smiled. “Guess I was lucky.” She said in a whisper as she focused on her food.
Casey looked up at Alex and smiled softly, wanting to say more but decided to keep her mouth shut, starting to eat right after. For a while, they didn’t say anything, they just kept each other company while they ate. But then Alex started talking about some cases and making jokes about the squad, which soon after had Casey laughing and talking about her own experiences with the squad. They soon fell into a comfortable conversation, losing track of time and before they knew it, it was late. Alex watched as Casey gathered her things and put together the files she’d be needing for the trial. Once she was done, they both stared at each other, unsure of what was the next move.
“I can take you home.” Alex said softly.
Casey stared into blue eyes, a little unsure about it. “I can just take a taxi that’ll take me straight there.” She smiled softly.
Alex shrugged. “We can grab the same taxi, you’re not too far away from me.” She smiled.
Casey sighed, nodding her head. “Sounds good to me.”
The whole ride was also quiet at first, but then Casey started talking about her trial for the next day and where she was standing at the moment, somehow, asking for approval that she was doing the right thing and that she was going the right way, which Alex was quick to agree with her in everything. The ride seemed so short as they were lost in conversation, every now and then they’d stare at each other and just smile, feeling the most comfortable than they had felt in all these past few weeks. Alex asked the taxi driver to wait for her as she got off following Casey, she walked to the entrance of the building with her and they stopped right there, Casey turning to look at Alex, offering a smile.
“Guess I’ll see you tomorrow?” Casey smiled.
Alex stared at her and nodded. “Yes.” She smiled. “Did I ever tell you that I love your smile? Your dimples show up.”
Casey nibbled on her bottom lip to try to stop herself from blushing and her smile to widen, she looked down at the floor and nodded. “You mentioned it once or twice.”
“Well…I don’t mind to repeat myself.” Alex grinned. “See you tomorrow, Case.” She leaned in and kissed her dimple, smiling as she pulled away and walked back to the taxi.
Casey only stood there staring at Alex, waving as she saw the taxi drive away. “Fuck…” she whispered softly as she turned to get inside.
********************
Alex noticed the change on Casey the more she visited her and the more they spent together. She felt proud that she was getting Casey to loosen up a bit more around her and that they were getting back to being close -minus the sex of course-. At this point, all Alex wanted to do was to show Casey that she really cared about her, that she really didn’t just want sex from her. She didn’t know when the conversation would be brought up again, or if she had to bring it up, but she knew that Casey would soon ask or her curiosity would get the best of her, but for now, Alex just enjoyed doing this. She had made it her routine to buy Casey coffee, they had lunch or dinner at their offices, and shared the taxis. Casey on the other hand, she was still questioning everything that Alex was doing, but at the same time, she was enjoying every bit of it, even if at night her mind was clouded with doubts and questions, wondering what Alex was doing. But this was much better than the nights she had cried wondering if she had made the good choice of pushing Alex away, and now that she was back in her life, she didn’t think that she wanted her to ever leave again.
When the squad told Olivia to invite Alex and that they’d be inviting Casey, they had their doubts if it would be a good idea, but judging by last time, things had not been that bad, they had just sat down separately and they had their drinks; yes, Alex ended up leaving at some point for some reason but other than that, things had been just fine, so they thought another try wouldn’t hurt anyone. So when both women arrived together, the whole squad was pretty much surprised but also sure that the night would go just fine if they were now close. It was when Olivia started to figure out what had happened, grinning behind her drink as both women arrived to the table, greeting everyone.
The night went on as they talked and had their drinks, talking about back stories or anything else that didn’t include work, it was their chance to stay away from the job and they were not about to talk about the cases they had. Soon after, they started ordering round after round, Munch and Fin being the first two who became tipsy and started making jokes, making the whole squad laugh. Alex couldn’t take her eyes away from Casey, enjoying every moment of it because her laugh and smile had become her favorite thing in the world. Olivia was the only one who noticed this, so when Casey said she’d go for another round and was followed by Elliot, Olivia took her chance to sit beside Alex.
“So…you and Casey seem to be good friends again.” Olivia raised her brow.
Alex turned to look at Olivia and nodded. “Yeah. I mean…we were. Just, you know…we had been busy, and we had been focusing on our cases.”
“Bull.”
“I’m sorry?”
Olivia chuckled. “Alex, c’mon. You know better than to lie to me. I can clearly see the way you look at her, and you’re gonna tell me that it’s just you being coworkers?”
Alex sighed as she looked down at her drink. “Casey and I go way back…when I started in Sex Crimes…and she was in White Collar.” She looked back at Olivia. “We met at a bar. We talked for hours and…I invited her over.” She tilted her head as she smiled.
Olivia’s jaw dropped then, grinning. “You two hooked up.”
“For around two years.” Alex grinned.
“Shut. Up.” Olivia huffed a laugh and looked back at Casey for a moment who was talking to Elliot. “I thought she didn’t do that.” She looked back at Alex and raised her brow. “I thought you didn’t do that.”
“Well…it was like she called me in, you know?” Alex smiled. “I couldn’t help it and…the thing is that…Casey and I had sort of an argument. She said that what we had…it had all been just sex.”
“And it was more to you.” Olivia smiled.
Alex nodded. “It took me a while to accept it but yes. It was way more than just a hook up.” She smiled. “So…I’m trying to show her just that.”
Olivia smiled. “It’s working.”
Alex frowned. “How are you so sure?” She grinned.
“Because I know she doesn’t smile like she smiles with you. And I can tell she’s more relaxed and happy than she was a few weeks ago.” Olivia smiled. “I’m sure she was just protecting herself.”
Alex shook her head as she shrugged. “From what? I…I don’t intend to hurt her or do anything to her.”
Olivia tilted her head. “She never told you?”
Alex furrowed her brows. “What?”
Olivia shook her head. “It’s not my place, Alex.”
Alex was about to say something but at that moment Casey and Elliot came back with the drinks, interrupting their conversations. Olivia only offered her a small and went back to her seat, joining the conversation with Munch and Fin. Casey sat back down and gave Alex her drink, engaging in a conversation with her. Eventually, midnight arrived, and everyone went their separate ways, leaving Alex and Casey waiting for their taxi. When they were inside, Alex looked into her purse and got a rectangular shape box, handing it to Casey.
Casey frowned as she looked up at Alex, grabbing the box. “What is this?”
“Happy birthday.” Alex grinned.
Casey felt her heart stopping for a moment as she smiled. “You remembered.”
Alex nodded. “I did. Open it.”
Casey raised her brow curiously as she opened the box, gasping as she saw the beautiful gold necklace with her birthstone. “Alex…”
Alex smiled. “I thought you’d like it. I remember you mentioning that was your birthstone and…thought it could be a perfect gift.”
Casey nodded. “It’s beautiful.” She smiled and then turned to Alex. “Put it on me?”
Alex nodded and grabbed the necklace from the box, waiting for Casey to turn her back to Alex so she could carefully place the necklace. Once she was done, she smiled and couldn’t help but grab the necklace that not laid on Casey’s neck. “Looks beautiful.” Her eyes then met green eyes, her breath hitched as she noticed Casey’s stare.
“First stop.” The taxi driver said.
Casey snapped out of her trance as she noticed they were in her building already, clearing her throat and looking back at Alex. “T-Thank you, Alex. You really didn’t have to.”
“No worries.” Alex smiled. “See you on Monday.”
Casey nodded. “Yes.” She leaned in and kissed her cheek, smiling. She grabbed her purse and got out of the car.
Alex waved as the taxi drove away, sighing softly as she touched her cheek, a smile appearing on her face. She was scared that maybe it would be too much, and Casey would make her stop right there, and then finally having the conversation that she had been dreading for so long, but no, she saw the genuine smile on Casey’s face and the spark in her eyes. After all, she made the right choice. Once she got to her apartment, she took off her heels throwing them by the door and then taking off her coat, putting it on the rack along with her purse. Just as she was about to walk to the kitchen, she heard a knock on her door, furrowing her brows since she was not expecting anyone, and it was not the time for visits. She turned to open and almost gasped as she saw an agitated Casey.
“Casey?”
Casey took a deep breath as she smiled. “It so happened that a neighbor was just walking in, and I told him I was here to see you, so he let me in.” She huffed a breathless chuckle. “You should let your neighbors know that it’s dangerous.”
Alex chuckled. “What are you doing here?”
“I need to talk to you, and I couldn’t wait for Monday. Or tomorrow. I just needed to see you.”
Alex’s heart stopped for a second, nodding softly as she let Casey in her apartment. She closed the door and had a déjà vu as they stood in the same place they had the last time Casey had been here. She cleared her throat as she crossed her arms. “What do you need to talk about?”
Casey tilted her head as she sighed. “What are you doing, Alex?”
Alex frowned. “What?”
“I just…I thought you’d hate me after the conversation we had…the last conversation we had.” Casey shook her head. “I said…what I said. And…then you started doing all these sweet things for me, and you got me here laughing, and smiling, and blushing and just so…” she smiled. “…happy.”
Alex smiled softly. “Casey…” she walked slowly to Casey, grabbing her hands. “I lied.” She said softly. “It wasn’t just a hook up for me. I…I know it was wrong of me, but I couldn’t help but let myself get lost in you and…I started falling for you. But I didn’t want to ruin what we had.”
Casey closed her eyes as she looked down, tears rolling down her eyes. “Alex…”
“You mean more to me than you think, Case. I’m willing to show you.” Alex placed her hand on Casey’s cheek, making her look back up at her. “What we had…it was more than just sex to me, and I am so sorry if I made it seem like it was just that, but it wasn’t. I love making you smile, I love making you laugh, I love being with you. I miss holding you and kissing you.” Alex smiled. “I’m willing to show you that I mean it.”
Casey shook her head. “Alex…I don’t do relationships.”
“Then why did you push me away just like that? Was it really just sex to you?” Alex tilted her head.
Casey stared into blue eyes and shook her head. “No.” She whispered.
“Then what’s stopping you, Casey?”
Casey took a shaky breath. “I was in an abusive relationship.” She simply said as she shrugged. “I’m afraid to let myself fall for you and then…get my heart broken.”
Alex sighed as she shook her head. “Casey…I could never do that. I am so sorry you went through that. I really am. But Case…I’m never gonna hurt you. You mean the world to me. I’m falling so hard for you, and I can’t stop.”
“You mean that?” Casey looked back at her, a hint of hope in her stare.
Alex nodded. “Every word.” She smiled.
Casey smiled sadly as she placed her hands on Alex’s neck. “Please don’t hurt me, Alex.” She whispered softly.
“I won’t.” Alex smiled as she leaned in and kissed her forehead softly. “And I ask the same of you.” She chuckled softly.
Casey nodded. “I’m sorry I said that. I didn’t mean it. I was just really afraid that I was falling for you and that maybe you…you’d tell me that this was nothing. I wanted to save myself from the pain. And I hurt you.”
Alex kissed her forehead softly again. “We’ll work on it, together.” She smiled softly as she looked back into green eyes. “I want this. I want us, Case.”
“I want you too. I want us.” Casey smiled. “I’ve missed you.”
Alex smiled. “I’ve missed you too.” She giggled as she pulled Casey close and kissed her lips softly.
Casey still had her doubts, she was still a bit unsure of this whole thing, but she knew that Alex was true to her word, and she could really tell that Alex really wanted her, and she couldn’t be any happier. There was still so much they needed to talk about, Casey wanted to open up to Alex, and she knew Alex would give her time to do so, she trusted Alex. She wrapped her arms around her neck and pulled her closer, smiling against her lips. This right here, is what she wanted, she wanted Alex, and that’s all she was sure about.

Sometimes Your Soul Family Is The Only Family You Need - Part 2
Marvel AU
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x reader x Steve Rogers
Tumblr media
Summary: 18 months ago you were a mess but with the help of your close friends you start to rebuild your life. Your soul friendships maybe chaotic but they're your family, just as you're theirs. With one of them about to have a baby, you and your misfit friends are here to visit. But will you stay? And what will the small town think of you having two soulmates and why do you keep finding yourself in the same place as a bunch of hot bikers.
"Sometimes families are assholes, sometimes your soul connections mean far more than family ever can. Sometimes your soul family is the only family you need." - Nurse Maggie
Chapter Warning: Premature labour mentioned, mention of miscarriage
Chapter Summary: The reader and Ryan arrive and the fluttering in readers chest is nothing right? RIGHT???
Your ass was well and truly numb, and Ryan had possibly napped more than he ever had. You glanced over at him in the passenger seat. Passenger Princess.
Ryan had come into your life at a time you needed him most. You'd left home, quickly after your soul letters had appeared. They weren't your standard letters though. You had two lots of letters on your wrist and to say your family was shocked was an understatement.
Your Dad had immediately branded you a whore and made it clear you weren't welcome in the house anymore. Your siblings, all older and already with homes of their own, either shrugged or pointed out it WAS his house.
A very emotional phone call between you and an old school friend, had led you to pack a case and grab your passport. Days later you were in Spain working the season at a fancy hotel.
You and Ryan had started on the same day. Both of you escaping home. You for apparently being a whore and him for being gay. You were allocated a small one bed apartment to share and a friendship was formed. After an issue with accommodation, and more people joining the season, you were joined by Annemarie, Darcy and Wanda. The snap of being soul friends happened the moment they stepped into the apartment.
Over the next few weeks you would all begin to come back together, as Annemarie welcomed her baby. It was sooner than it should be and the knots in your stomach had meant you'd not ate all day. You were probably the most worried you'd ever been. You didn't want her to go through what you had. She was much further along in her pregnancy and it would make it hundreds time worse.
Your baby, a boy you'd thought, would have been..............STOP. Stop it right now, you told yourself as the lump formed in your throat and a tear ran down your face.
You spotted a sign for Brook Town and placed your hand on Ryan's leg and tapped lightly.
"Ry, Ry, Ryyyyyyyyyyyyyy"
"Urghhhhhhhhhhhh, this better be good"
"Were almost there."
"Oh. Babe did we even stop?"
You shook your head.
"Y/N! You should have taken a break!"
"It's fine. I just want to get there. I don't want her to be on her own."
Ryan's heart sinks when he realises. This isn't just about getting to your best friend quickly, it's that she has someone with her.
"Babe, she's not on her own. Daniel is there."
"I know, I know. You know what I mean." she reply glancing over at him, and he knows immediately what you mean. He still thinks of you in that hospital bed. How you looked so alone when he'd arrived, even when your Mum had decided to make an appearance.
He squeezed your arm and leaned over planting a kiss on your cheek.
"I know, I know."
"She only has him right now."
"I know and he probably needs us too. His family are still on vacation right?"
"I think so." you replied as you're mind started to wander again, Ryan squeezed your arm again. You smiled at him and pushed your intrusive thoughts back.
"So the pie shop and then the hospital right?"
"Yep" Ryan replied, pointing to the row of stores as you approached it "it's the second one along."
You parked immediately in front of the store, the evening setting in meaning it was a quiet time for shoppers. The store was open for another fifteen minutes but that didn't stop Ryan rushing in.
"I'll go in, you take a break, hopefully they haven't sold the pregnant lady's pie."
You snorted with laughter as he dashed in, deciding stretching your legs was a good idea. Your legs cramped up as you tried and you groaned loudly as you got out.
"Fuck me."
You heard a snort of laughter and looked around to find a set of piercing blue grey eyes looking at you. And there it was the fluttering in your chest.

Normal People- Simon ''Ghost'' Riley
Tumblr media
You and Simon were once together when you were younger, you eventually grew apart. Years later you two by some coincidence meet once again.
A/N: listen to any of these songs, trust me!!! (This Town-Niall Horan, Photograph- Ed Sheeran, Strange-Celeste, Like Real People Do- Hozier, Sparks- Coldplay)
Based on a request:
GN!Reader, little angst, lovers to strangers(in a way) to lovers again
You and Simon have known each other since primary school. Neither of you knew you'd end up falling in love by the time secondary school came around. It was always you two against the problems of life and teenage drama. He asked you to be his boyfriend/girlfriend by year 10, ever since that day you and him were more than inseparable. His mates always teased him about it, it was rather adorable how much he would blush when they'd mention you two as a couple. He would sneak into your room after hours, whisper everything and try to contain his laugh when you'd say some terrible jokes. At times you two would sneak up to the roof and just stare at the stars all night.
One night as you two watched the stars he asked you to school formal. It was a big deal amongst friend groups and couples, so you of course said yes. That night as your friend group all drank beer by some campfire after the dance, you sat on his lap. He was all quiet, his eyes never leaving yours. "I love you, r/n'' he whispered into your ear. You looked at him with puppy eyes. You smiled and kissed him.
Ever since, any time you really meant it, he or you would say it, even if the time wasn't right, it could only be said when it was meant and no other time. As time went on, he joined the military, you stayed back and finished college, when he came back, you were working as an assistant. One night he went to visit his mum, she advised he visit you. And as he walked the streets, there you were with the same friend group. You and your friends laughing and drinking, everyone with their significant other, you sat with them, an empty stool next to you.
"Okay Simon, I understand, and don't worry darling, at every table I sit by, I'll save ya a seat, that's a promise''
''you don't have to do that, love''
Eventually one night you and him broke up. His role in the military got more serious, it demanded more of him. And you both knew it was time to just call it quits. You two had grown apart, it was an event that had to happen. You would move out to Dublin soon, a top Uni there accepted you(see what I did there,,anyways). Simon would have to leave England for months on end, it was just bound to happen. So when you called it quits, you moved to Ireland and he to somewhere in the world, wherever the military took him.
He carried a picture of you both from the night of the school formal. It was you and him sitting by the campfire, you in your attire and he in his suit, he had his arms around your waist. The way you two smiled at the camera, a true moment where he felt safe and at home.
--------
He was now 29, soon to be thirty, you'd be around the same age as well. He was now a lieutenant for the army, you a successful company executive. There were nights were he wondered where you were in Ireland, if you had met someone new, if maybe you had written him letters but just never sent them out. If you had maybe settled down, if you even remembered how at some point you were his life, the sole purpose why he always was a better man.
At drunken nights, thats when he thought of you the most. How you kissed him on rooftops, sneaked out just to talk to him, or the nights where you played the piano at some pubs. Maybe it was the sense of home, belonging that he missed, but maybe it wasn't, it was your sweet voice, how you would caress his face, rub his back, listen to his problems, kissed him under that stormy night, how by morning, you two laid on the couch at his mum's drinking tea and eating soup because you two got sick.
On cold lonely nights in the desert, thats when he missed you the most.
But as any true mystery in this world, you one warm night found each other once more. You in some jeans and a white tee, he in a black shirt and an old pair of jeans. Manchester was quite boring if you've been a local. You pushed your trolly around the store, you accidentally bumped into a tall man. ''Shit, sir I am incredibly sorry I was looking at this stupid stupid date on the-'' You looked up from the can of beans.
''R/n?''
''If it isn't Simon Riley'' you said in a happy tone.
He noticed the same old locket he gave you on your 16th birthday, it was a picture you took on a booth. You and him smiling at the camera. It gave his chest a good kind of ache. It was nice to know he was thought of.
''I thought you'd forgotten all about me, love.'' He walked up to you, his arms opening a little. You too walked to him and hugged him, ''not in a million years, Simon.'' You kissed his cheek, oh that warm fuzzy feeling of belonging.
He looked at you, his hands caresses the sides of your face. He looked at you, mesmerized you hadn't changed a bit, your smile still warm and beautiful. He smiled as his hands had a feel for your still soft skin. Your eyes welled up a little, it was a relief he was still on this Earth.
The many nights you wished you went to Sunday school and learned to pray, to believe, to hope. One night you did though, you had just arrived from Ireland, you went to a local church, you sat there and whispered, ''please, if you really are real, if he is still out there, just..keep him safe, please''
''You look rather ravishing my love.'' He smiled at you, he looked all over your face, studying it and remembering all of the small details.
''Sorry, again for hitting your bum with the trolly.'' you chuckled. He shook his head, ''s'right, love.'' he said almost in a rather happier tone. It was crazy to see you here, but he wasn't complaining, thats for sure.
''when did you get here by the way?'' he took your trolly, and tossed his basket on it, he pushed the trolly and walked towards the next aisle, you following along.
''Here in Manchester? well lets see, I came back I think 6 years ago?..yeah definitely six. And you?''
''Got back last week, you know the whole army thing.'' he said as he happily looked through his list of must buys.
''Hm I see...I suppose your partner made that list for ya?'' you asked in a curious way, looking for a 'no, my mum needs this,,,no partner..been waiting for ya' type of answer.
''No, I am making some dinner for myself, and no, no partner,,,still.'' he had given up in trying to find someone after you, and that one failed date he had about 8 years ago.
''ah I see well-''
''do you..y'know, have someone to go home to? is this to forward or-''
''no no, not all, no, its not forward..um..no I don't been too much of a selfish person since my job.''
It was silent for a few minutes as he walked down the aisle. ''so,,,I get to have a second chance? or we..we can be friends? I would be okay with just anything..or not..I don't know.'' he let out a nervous chuckle as he tossed a box of sponges into the trolly.
''well..i..um do you want us to..have a second chance or-''
''yes!,,,if you're okay with it, I want to work on us, I have more time now, maybe not the most time but..this is going to sound-''
''stupid? cheesy? weird?'' you tried guessing.
''all?'' he chuckled, ''i..always thought we would end up together, you know the whole living together, walking down the aisle to me, I don't know maybe getting a dog and taking him on walks on our days off,'' he shrugs, ''its dumb, but I always thought you'd be my...my future, my little something.''
''The one thing I can get to be selfish about.'' you said, he looked at you, blush spread across his face.
''yeah,,,the one thing I can get to be selfish about, I like that,,so?''
''lets be selfish Simon, together.'' You kiss his cheek.
'Maybe the events in our lives were set in motion a long time ago. There's an old Buddhist saying that when you meet your soulmate, remember that the act to bring you together was 500 years in the making. So always appreciate and be kind to each other.'

AITA for making dinner plans the same night my friend arrived in the country to stay at my place?
My friend Erin (27F) and I (25F) are both citizens of Country A and have lived/worked in Country B for about ~3 years; up until about a year ago when she got a promotion that sent her back to Country A. She's sent back to Country B for work related things about twice a year, and she tries to use a few vacation days to arrive a little early or stay a little late for personal visiting time. She was set to arrive last week and had asked if she could stay at my apartment for a few days before she got the company hotel, and I said yes. All she had said in advance was she'd arrive at night; trains and public transport are really good in Country B and we know the language / city very well, I didn't need to pick her up at the airport, just at my local station to walk to my apartment.
The day of her flight, my boyfriend (27M) asked if we wanted to go to dinner. He absolutely did not mean a nice dinner - just meeting up for chicken or traditional noodle place, nothing fancy or long. He's a Country B local and lives south of where I live/ my office is, so, deciding where and when to meet up would really affect timing to meet up with Erin. From my morning onward I began messaging her asking about when her flight would arrive/ when she'd get into the station. I was mindful of the time difference and I was sure I would catch her before the flight. I'm not allowed to be on my phone at the office, but I kept checking and texting / messaging on different apps throughout the work day, to ask when she would arrive, hoping that even if she was on airplane mode and on the flight, she would get at least one of the messages. At one point I did add that my boyfriend and I were thinking of getting dinner after I finished work and so wanted to know when she would arrive, and that I could still meet her at night. Verbatim one of my messages: "I'm not sure what time your arrival is but we might have dinner plans, but the night is good - I'm just trying to figure out timing." The last few hours of work I couldn't check my phone at all. I also told my boyfriend that dinner probably wouldn't happen, unless he wanted to get up and meet us for a later dinner once Erin arrived, but I couldn't tell him when.
Finally when I finished work, I went to see if Erin had responded at last. She had blocked me on Instagram and Snapchat. I went on Twitter, checking the apps I had messaged her, and she had unfollowed me, but she had a public account, and was saying: "some girls are the fakest" "quality over quantity cut the dumb bitches off" etc. So I iMessaged her asking what happened and what I did, and she said, "you're a bad friend, so I don't want to be your friend anymore." "I asked you like five times before coming if I could stay at your place and now you want to see what's up with that dumbass looking boy." "I'm super burned off by you."
I told her I was kind of in shock and didn't know what to say. I told her "I just needed to know timing" - I didn't even know when she was sending the messages if she had landed or had plane wifi. She said she had found someone else to stay with last minute and just kept saying I'm a bad friend and she doesn't need me as a friend.
I'm stunned. I've seen her be angry and irritated before but we've been friends since undergrad and we've never had a fight. I'm rereading my messages I sent her through the day and trying to see if I said anything in a way that implied I was cancelling on her. I genuinely only meant to know when she was arriving so I could figure out how to spend my evening and what to do for dinner. All I knew was "night" - I didn't know if she was coming at 5, at 8, at 9, at 10:30, and what I would do or could do for dinner depended on when she would be at the station. Maybe I shouldn't have said that the option I was specifically thinking of was dinner with my boyfriend? But I mean - I really didn't mean to imply her time was deprioritized or that she couldn't stay at my place? So maybe I shouldn't have tried to make other plans at all? I'm really just trying to logic this out and if I shouldn't have tried to do dinner too.
What are these acronyms?

n/a: I'VE CHANGED THINGS AND I MIGHT'VE FOUND INSPIRATION after watching 'You' again, if my narrative seems like Joe's, so sorry, I am obsessed with the man. BARE WITH ME, much shorter chapter then the one before
You were running, feeling the sweat drops sliding down your face. Your legs felt tired, but you knew that if you stopped now, you’d likely collapse on the ground. Still, you kept increasing the speed on the treadmill, wanting to challenge yourself more.
“Are you done? We need to talk.” Jesse was beside you on another treadmill, but he was still, just leaning against it, watching you. You stopped the machine, gradually reducing the speed.
“I hope this isn’t bad news. I’ve had to put up with a lot from those two this week; I don’t plan on hearing from you that everything’s going wrong now,” you said before starting to drink water to hydrate your dry throat. The truth was, you had started frequenting the campus gym much more than before because it was unbearable to hear Ellie talk about Dina or see Ellie and Dina acting cute in the apartment.
Acting like it didn’t bother you was becoming a very difficult task, and there were times when you would simply cut Ellie off mid-conversation and lock yourself in your room. The next day, you’d have to lie about something. You couldn’t bear the thought that the small plan you had with Jesse would fail. You had been helping him with things like knowing where Dina was at any given time, if she was excited about some new show, if she had any other favorite candies, or to keep Ellie busy so he could have some alone time with Dina.
While Dina’s visits had been decreasing, you still saw her around the house. That wasn’t enough for you; she had to disappear from your lives.
“I’ve been thinking that maybe you should participate more too.”
“I already do. It’s not easy keeping them away.”
“No, I mean you should start seducing Ellie,” you frowned at his words, confused about what he meant. “I can win Dina back, but likewise, Ellie could give it a shot, as both are currently single and Ellie’s interest lies solely with Dina, I think.”
You nodded slowly, seeing the point of his words. You hadn’t thought about also having Ellie eating out of your hand; she had to desire you as much as you did her.
“Well, Ellie and I are going to my vacation home next weekend for Spring Break. I can try something there; we’ll be alone for two days before my family arrives.”
“I know. I have a date with Dina that and this weekend.”
“A date?”
“Well, she’s coming to my house to help me study,” Jesse clarified, handing you your bag. “Keep me informed if anything changes between you and Ellie.”
“The same goes for you” you grabbed your bag and waved him goodbye as you left the gym.
Whistling, you went through your phone, swiping insta stories ¡Bingo! They were on a date in some place so you had the house by yourself for maybe a couple hours. The bus took it’s time to arrive but the trip to the apartment was quick.
You were going to shower, sleep and maybe fantasize a little bit. You could wake up on a Saturday morning and start scheming from the very first ray of sunlight.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
And you did. Your whole week revolve around Ellie and being in her space more than anything, pleasing her, hanging out with her, making excuses just to have her by your side.
“I just need some help to prepare things for the trip” you would say declining the call of Dina on her phone while she was in the shower “I want to have a great time, I’m so tired of studying all my free time”
“I can help, yeah” Her voice sounded a little muffled because of the water running, you were mesmerized looking at her figure, at least, the shadow. “I just have to let Dina know, we’ve made plans, maybe you can tag along?”
You? Tag along? Why did it had to be you the one tagging along and not Dina? You huffed in annoyance.
“Can you pass me my towel?”
“You could always get it yourself, I’ve seen you naked before”
“I don’t want to wet the floor!” The water stop running and she popped he head and her arm, waving it so you could give her the towel. You were fast to leave the phone where she left it before, you threw the towel at her.
Sighs left your dry mouth as you remember. It’s been hard this week, so hard to balance cheer practice, studies, keep Ellie around, keep Ellie’s phone close, keep Jesse informed, keep Dina away, make Jesse inform you, stay pretty, stay consistent, don’t stop the motion.
The Friday morning, you were in the library, first time of the week that you actually spent time alone. Not fully since you met Jesse at first to talk about them and after collecting and exchanging information you went to the furthest table to study and concentrate in your work.
Now you were gathering your books and laptop because Ellie had sent you a message saying she was going home already, that she was going to pick you up, that you should be ready. You saw her at the door, but she wasn’t alone and seemed to be arguing with the other person.
With every step you took, you could see more of the other person’s face, it was Dina. They both fell silent the moment you opened the door and greeted them, Dina looked you up and down and turned her attention back to Ellie “Please don’t stop talking to me this week, we’re both angry about different things and it’s best if we calm down and talk another time”.
And with that she walked into the library bumping your shoulder on purpose, you opened your mouth offended and turned to Ellie “What is her problem with me? Just know that I’m holding back because it’s your something, but otherwise…”
“I don’t even know if we’re still a thing” she muttered grabbing your backpack and starting to walk “Come on, we need to pack our bags for the Easter trip.”
You nodded looking inside the library as Dina and Jesse seemed to be studying together while laughing, you couldn’t be happier. The plan was working, but it wouldn’t be complete until Ellie and Dina broke up completely.
When you got home, you went into your room and saw that your bed was full of clothes and your travel bag was almost full. You sighed as you got down to work and finished packing your bag and cleaning your room, once you finished you went into Ellie’s room only to find her lying on top of the pile of clothes. “What are you doing? We’re supposed to be out of here in less than two hours and I remind you that you’re supposed to drive there.”
“I don’t even know what to put in.”
“Ellie, you’re like an NPC, you always wear the same clothes, just put three pairs of trousers, five shirts, one pair of pyjamas and two swimming trunks, we’ll swap clothes if we have to.”
“I’ll pass, how about I stay here? I wouldn’t want to spoil your holiday with your family.”
“No way, you’re family too, my mother loves you as if you were her daughter, I’ll help you!”
‘Like a daugther soon to be in law’ you thought, pushing her to the edge of the bed and starting to look through her clothes to see what she could and couldn’t wear. It didn’t take long and Ellie took the opportunity to clean her room and prepare some snacks for mid-trip.
Soon you were both changed into comfortable clothes and inside the car ready for the journey. Oh, what a trip this one was going to be ¿Ellie and Dina upset with each other? The cream decorating the cupcake ¿You maintaining her occupied so she could barely have time to check on her phone and lose contact with Dina while Jesse did his thing? Cherry on TOP.

Fall For A Shooting Star//Cassian Week 2024: Day Two, Hair
Tumblr media
a/n: I am a day behind and I deeply apologize for it. BUT I am committed to finishing out all seven of these little blurbs. They all exist in the same universe/same pairing and hopefully one day I will expand beyond this week as well! Let me know your thoughts and if you all have any ideas for the upcoming prompts or want to see something specific in the future! xoxo
PART ONE
Thea giggled as Cassian slid into the bath and water sloshed over the sides.
“I’m sorry. Should have gotten one big enough for your wings.” The apartment on the banks of the Sidra was perfectly sized for her. Wings not included. And it was often that Cassian came to visit or they met out in Velaris, but this was his first time bathing at her new home. And it was proving to be quite the ordeal.
“It’s fine, my little Thea. I could have done the responsible thing and bathed at the House before picking you up for dinner.”
“Ah, yes, but when have you ever done the responsible thing?” she hummed as his head tipped back against the lip of the tub to look her in the eyes.
“I left without ravishing you the other night,” he murmured, eyes flicking to her lips and not bothering to hide how they lingered.
“It was only our first date, Cassian. That hardly would have been appropriate behavior.” First official date, maybe. But certainly not the first time they had shared an intimate meal or walked for miles without the conversation missing a beat or watched the stars together in absolute peace and contentment. At Windhaven, the thing between them had been suppressed. It was too dangerous to feel so deeply in a place like that. Not when everyone was watching and hoping for Cassian to fail, not afraid to use Thea against him. The female he had pined for since he was a child shoved into the arms of Lord Devlon.
But with Rhysand’s ascension as High Lord of the Night Court and Cassian’s appointment as General, he had received Rhys’ blessing to move Thea to Velaris and had made her feel like a member of their family. When they were younger, her father too domineering a figure to allow her to spend much time with the young Illyrian warriors while they trained. But after long days of fighting for the clothes on his back, Cassian would help her with her chores and put a smile on her face and sneak leftover food to her tent at night when everyone else was asleep. He fell in love with her long before he even understood the feeling. And she loved him right back.
“I’ve been trying to court you properly for centuries. You just never let me.” Velaris meant they could relax. They could be free. The risk of a forced marriage and child bearing didn’t exist here. On some nights she forgot that and the lights of the town and the sounds of the happy citizens reminded her she had escaped.
“I love you, Cassian,” she whispered with a kiss to his forehead. “At least I’ve known that the entire time.”
“I love you, too. More than anything.” He closed his eyes as she kissed down the center of his face before pulling away. “I don’t want you stop,” he groaned, the water splashing when his wings drooped slightly in defeat.
“You promised me dinner, remember? I’m just grabbing the requisite materials to wash your hair before your stomach starts growling.”
“We can skip dinner if you want to kiss me some more.” He was greedy. After centuries of fleeting touches and stolen glances, he couldn’t get enough of her. Holding her hand felt like a luxury. Laughing with her and kissing her felt a blessing from the Mother.
“Easy there, bat boy. You said you’d court me properly.” Cassian sighed because he had and he had promised. Promised to not skip any of the steps that were in her books. Any of the steps she had dreamed about when the older women would tell stories around the fire at Windhaven. But even asking her to dinner with flowers and nothing but politeness, he had just wanted to drop to his knees and ask her to be his wife. Be his forever.
“Someone should have told me how stupid that was,” he muttered as her hand cupped water onto his hair and her fingers deftly massaged something smelling of rosemary into his hair.
“It’ll make everything all the more sweet in the end.” Thea smiled as his eyes fluttered closed and his muscles uncoiled at the urging of her movements. He sagged completely after a few more moments, humming with delight as the warm water rinsed away the shampoo and down his back. “Almost done,” she promised as a lush orange scent wrapped around his nose and smoothed into his locks.
“Why don’t I come here for a bath every day?” he asked as his hand reached to lightly wrap around her forearm, his thumb rubbing her skin thankfully.
“You’re welcome to. I have the time.” Cassian and Rhysand had both insisted she didn’t need to find work in Velaris. That her rent would be handled without her even needing to think about it. But being idle invited too many thoughts of the past. She was working on finding something. The right thing just hadn’t popped up yet.
“I’m sure Az would allow you to help with sharpening his daggers every morning.” Thea laughed, reaching for a comb.
“He would be catatonic to hear you suggest that. And he’d only say yes because he’s too polite to say otherwise.” Azriel had a soft spot for her not just for the love his brother held but for her tribulations growing up as an Illyrian. He understood the struggle better than anyone. “Your hair is nice and clean now,” she announced with a kiss to the top of his head.
“Thank you, sweetheart.” Yet he made no move to rise from the tub. Thea smiled. If this was the only way to get her warrior to relax a little, then so be it.
“I have the ingredients for that soup you like. And I made a fresh loaf of bread this morning.” One eye cracked open.
“You don’t care if we skip dinner?”
“Just know you owe me two dinners for every one you skip.” His eyes twinkled as he smiled.
“I got an eternity of dinners to fill,” he brought the back of her hand to his lips, “I think there is some space for two of them to be with you.”
