Progress Update - October, 2024
It is time…the first Quarterly Progress Update for our next game starts now! And we're kicking it off with a title drop!!! Drum roll, please! Tom, if you will help me out...

For the record that’s not the real logo, just a temporary one that I slapped together.
Before we get into it I would actually like to glance back at the past and detail what our development timeline looked like for Band Camp Boyfriend. It's possible this one might look somewhat similar.
2015-2017 - Writing 2017 - Commissioned art, created social media presence 2018 - Demo released on Itch.io in August Programming hell 2022 - Demo released on Steam 2023 - Full game released
The good news is this isn’t our first rodeo and I’m hopeful there won’t be so many growing pains this time.  We're also doing 4 routes and a shorter common route so that means less suffering for us. The bad news is I worked part-time 2015-2017 so I blazed through writing and now I work full-time…and I’m old…and my memory is failing me…but it’s okay, I’ve forgotten all the pain.
This time around we want to be sure we get all the writing down before we start commissioning art.  We had the tendency to keep going back and asking for more because the game kept getting bigger (saving up money was also a factor). We’re gonna make sure we know exactly what we want this time. We’d also like to save casting voice actors for much later in the process so they aren’t waiting around for years on end. So the demo for this game will not have voice acting. I believe I wrote about this a little before in our post-mortem. We’re learning from our mistakes, woohoo!
That said, this is what we’re hopefully visualizing for Heartbreaker.
2024-2025 - Writing 2026 - Big art commissioning year, a more exciting project reveal, hopefully demo release later in the year! 2027 and on - Programming hell! Casting! Soundtrack fun!
…If this was to line up with BCB that would mean 2031 release. Oh God. No, I wanna release it in this decade, thanks. This is very tentative and we’re determined to not take 7 years this time.
Enough about that! Here is what we’ve worked on this year!

Concept art: Lite was absolutely awesome (as always) and let us have sessions with her in which we worked on concept art of the main cast together. It was super helpful in bringing our visualizations to life and it will definitely aid in writing the story. I can't go on enough about how wonderful Lite is to work with, and it was amazing to watch her go. She would whip up a number of poses, face types, or hairstyles for us to choose from. It was really fun and we're very grateful for the time she spent with us.
The demo: That's right, the demo is written! Woohoo! Unlike Band Camp Boyfriend with its twisting, long-winded common route, Heartbreaker’s common route is a single day! Alex can sigh in relief because that’s one less nightmare in programming for her.
The demo will contain the one-day common route and the first two chapters of two different love interests’ routes (the other two are locked at the start of the game so you’ll just have to admire them from a distance). 
Brainstorming: Ahh my favorite part…talking long walks or going for coffee and coming up with ideas. Brainstorming is ongoing and includes character profiles, world-building, and route outlines. This game has a lot more lore and world-building than BCB, so it’s more of a challenge, but we’re here for it. I've already done a badly-drawn map of the setting. Just need to finish up some profiles for minor characters and do some of my own badly-drawn concept art. Then we move on to fleshing out the route outlines.
The first route: One goal I have is to try and finish writing the first draft of the first route by the end of the year! Which is insane because October is super busy for me, but I'm sure I can buckle down when it gets colder. It's a bit ambitious, but aim high, right?

Another Tylvinian Tales update
So I just realized it's been 6 days since I first started work on the VN, and we're done with character customization, as well as 3/4 through Day One.
When I lay down tomorrow, I'll put up a post with the new, adjusted release date for both the demo AND the full game, based on how much work I knock out today and tomorrow.
But! In 6 days, I've knocked out 1,032 lines of working code so far. Day One, so far, is 388 lines of code. Today I'm gonna work for 8 hours solid to see how much I can get done in one day so I'll be able to evaluate my speed.
And I'll update y'all tonight on the project's adjusted release date!

Holy shit, this really helped me flesh out the romance system in Phoenix Rising. I'm still working on it, but Oh Wow. the kindness coins system has always kind of bothered me a bit, but this! The Romance Card Tower is SO much more in depth and more realistic!

and why is he hot
Starling went through quite a few redesigns through the entire development process so let me talk about it a bit :3
It all started with this notes app drawing I made with my finger

Right from the start we knew his tail would be made out of tongues but figuring out how many and placed how was quite hard, I really had to girlmath my way thru

This was the first actual drawing I made of him. The story wasn't complete yet but I went ahead and designed something anyway. Here he was definitely "scarier" and his scar was also placed differently. He had gills on his neck but as you will see I changed their location to under his arms later on. We were actually considering not giving him a tongue of his own so I wanted to make his mouth terrifyingly big and empty.

Here I tried giving him bigger eyes like a fish. This was when his playful and childlike personality had started shaping as you can see from the expressions. I definitely liked this direction better but it also wasn't perfect just yet so I went ahead and did a few more changes

I slowed down on trying to figure out his design a bit after that and instead focused on how his sprite would look. He is a merman after all, he can't just stand straight like a lot of the other visual novel characters. This stage was PAINFUL.
These were the first ones I sketched, we ended up deciding we liked the 3rd one the best.

I carried that 3rd one over to another canvas and started playing around with how we could place his tail, we started entertaining the idea of having him sit on a big rock

This is when his pose really shaped up. The animated Little Mermaid movie was actually a big inspiration, I sat and rewatched the entire movie and studied how they animated her tail

And after that I finally finalized his design. We decided to change the end of his tail to be more eel like for aesthetic purposes (normal tail shape looked weird with tongues)

And for anyone wondering this is what Maelyn looked like at first. Since the story wasn't complete yet I thought it'd take place in a more modern setting and designed her with that in mind but we decided to have the story take place in 1800s so I changed the design based on that. I did a lot of research on glasses and corsets to make the design as accurate as I could.

Yes glasses! We didn't use the sprites in the main story but Maelyn does wear glasses and looks very pretty in them if you ask me. You will be seeing more of it in the bonus episodes!

Another Tylvinian Tale update
Character customization is fully done and we're about 3/4 of the way through Day One!
For those curious about the player customization, read below the cut to see all the options!
Customization Options for Player Characters:
Name (player text input, anything you want)
Species (Canine, Feline, Bird, Reptile, or Custom.) Custom Species options: Species name (player text input, anything you want), feathered/furred/scaled/chitinous, paws/hooves/talons/reptilian feet/tarsus (bug feet), wings or no wings
Prosthetics: yes or no
If yes: one hand, one arm, one foot, one leg (each of these offers choice of left or right), both hands, both arms, both feet, both legs.
Combination choices: your choice of any combination of left hand, left arm, right hand, right arm, left foot, left leg, right foot, right leg.
Character colors: one (leads to player text input to choose your fur/scale/chitin color) or two (leads to player text input to choose the primary and underbelly colors of your fur/scale/chitin.
Eye color: player text input, any color
If you are playing as a furred character, you'll also have the option to choose skin color (pawpads, inner ear, nose, etc) through text input
Tail: curled, standard, or fluffy canine tails, slim or fluffy feline tail, tailfeathers, dragon tail, reptile tail, bug abdomen
This then prompts a confirmation listing your selections so far with a "Yes" or "No" choice. Picking No will take you back to the start of character customization, picking Yes will progress to the next stage.
Then you're prompted with the following choices:
Biological sex: male, female, intersex, or null
Gender: gender, independent of biological sex, player text input, can be anything
Player text inputs for choosing your subjective, objective, possessive, and reflexive pronouns (he/him/his/himself, ae/aer/aers/aerself, they/them/theirs/themself, etc, can be literally any pronouns you want)
Orientation choice: straight, gay, bisexual, asexual, aromantic, aro/ace, pansexual, omnisexual, demisexual
Then you'll be taken to a confirmation listing the options you've chosen so far, asking if they are correct, with "Yes" or "No" options. Picking No will take you back to the biological sex prompt, and continue customization from there like before, while picking Yes will conclude character customization.
And that will begin your game! I know it sounds like a lot to go through before you even start the game, but having gone through it a hundred times during building it, I can assure you: it only takes a minute or so to get through. <3

For anyone who wants to write inclusive historical fiction, this website (Writing The Other) is great for any kind of writer. As a white, female Asexual author, it is important for me to maintain an idea of what is appropriate for writing POC and Allosexual people. And this course is from the amazing people who wrote the book Writing the Other. I've attended one of their seminars before a long, long, time ago. This one, I can't afford, but I hope you all take it and enjoy it!
