Hunter Noceda

Hunter probably knew Stolas! reader when he joined the Hexquad or through Willow, because I don't see it as very likely that he had friends in the emperor's coven (I'll do a drabble about that one day).

to try new things (and be away from his fiancée) Stolas! reader decided to join the Flyer Derby team, which was a surprise in itself because he seemed like someone...very...weak, at least in Hunter's eyes.

but the demon quickly became almost the opposite, summoning monstrous specters with his haunted items and his book (grimoire?) and honestly left him in disrepair.

although Stolas!lector was definitely "weak" in other ways, mostly because he was so SOFT.

He had great destructive potential, yes, but when I got to talk to him, he was so damn nice that it was suspicious (to him).

At first Hunter pretended to be angry at the constant reader talk, but little by little he lets down his walls and joins in a little in their talks, especially if they have to do with magic.

Hunter has a LOT of questions about how Oracle magic works ESPECIALLY from Stolas' family! Reader, how do you see the future with such precision? How do you control so many monsters at the same time? they might even compare research notes :D

When Hunter comes into trust with the reader, it is quite easy for him to see through him and how things affect him. like the thing with his fiancée for example.

Now, Hunter, unlike the following cases, firmly believes that THE FIANCE is the problem of everything and is willing to go for blood (he's like, how dare you make my friend cry?)

Hunter PERSONALLY doesn't think it's appropriate for Stolas! Reader and his fiancée try to be friends, make things happen? Sure, but being friends after all the bad times they've been through? titan no...

As for the terrible father thing...he can relate...A LOT.

Similar to what he did with Gus, he would share his experience with the reader and try to make him feel better.

but MOST OF ALL he goes into big brother mode when the reader is around his father (Hunter would have an inhuman amount of BEEF on the man)

Hunter knows what it's like to be manipulated by the person who's SUPPOSED to take care of you and someone you ADMIRE on top of it, so if necessary he gives the reader a reality shock when they need it.

Does being like Stolas include being fluffy and like an Owl? If so, there is no WAY Hunter doesn't end up sleeping (whether on purpose or accidentally) on the reader's soft fur (he gets very embarrassed later)

I imagine Stolas! reader tends to be very VERY dense and Hunter would definitely make some harmless jokes about it (like when someone is BLATANTLY flirting with him and he's just like "do you know what the differences are between frogs and toads? :D")

Reader's gardening hobby definitely helps him serve as a matchmaker between Hunter and Willow, whether leaving them alone on purpose or leaving a nice atmosphere ;)

Despite this, Hunter definitely thinks that reader plants are a bit too nippy for his good 😅

Hunter doesn't understand much about Astronomy or how it relates to the Oracle, but he will happily listen to the reader talking about it and tries to listen and understand as best he can. instead the reader hears about his fixation on Lobos :D

When Hunter and Willow are together, Stolas! The reader becomes his third wheel, or rather, his "practice son" is quite funny.

In general you could say that Hunter is slightly more protective of Stolas! reader for his naivety and gullibility, but he does not believe that he is any less capable for that.

He is still a great friend to him :3

Willow Park

Willow knew a little about Stolas reader, precisely because of how relevant his family was and that apparently the boy would be in her same year.

low key, Willow was nervous about this news at first, she was afraid of running into Stolas! reader for fear that he would become a Bully on her similar to Amity and her group in the first season.

but one day she ended up drinking with Stolas! reader as he ran to class, both dropping several things.

To Willow's surprise, Reader was really friendly and apologized A LOT for bumping into her, helping her pick up the books while talking about how he was new and got lost easily and how his locker tried to eat his hand.

In addition, he was completely amazed when he saw the copies of Erbology books that Willow had for her plant class, and he began to ask her MANY questions.

What were the types of plants like? Do they have carnivorous plants? Can you see them? Can you feed them? Do they have species from all the islands? and the list goes on..

Willow was so stunned by all the questions and the fact that who she thought would be her worst nightmare turned out to be a super innocent kid that she almost forgot she had class.

After that, Stolas reader would spend his time looking for Willow to talk about plants, to his joy and Willow's dismay, who on the one hand couldn't say that he disliked reader, on the contrary, he was very sweet and friendly, but he feared this. It would end in him being swallowed.

But when he met his "fiancee" with certain frustration problems...

At first Willow tries to help Stolas reader hide, but eventually tries to get them on good terms at least.

If it works, great!

If it doesn't work and you still hate each other, well, you can try that plant that reader has been studying so much--

reader is very supportive of Willow with her grubgy Flyer career! He is going to encourage her with his carnivorous plants with signs to encourage her🤣

Willow helps with Stolas Reader Gardening Hobbies!, whether it's reminding him when to water the plants, helping him get rid of the weed that bites him, or even growing plants he wants when he's feeling especially down.

Stolas reader has even tried to use his Oracle magic to make Willow get better grades, sometimes it works and other times they spoil half their lives, at least they know they will be friends in 20 years!

Willow is very emotionally supportive of EVERYONE, this does not exclude Stolas! reader, not only with his complicated fiancée, but also with the fact that his father is a TERRIBLE role model and treats him TERRIBLE.

Willow has tried to suggest that the reader take two classes, both Oracle and Plants, but the reader is TOO afraid of her father to tell her that she doesn't want to study what he says, which leaves Willow quite sad.

One thing's for sure, there are sleepovers at the Park house! and definitely try to include the reader in plans with friends as much as possible.

just like Willow is a safe place for Reader, Reader is a safe place for Willow, they are each other's shoulders to cry on, in a way.

Reader is definitely the ultimate shipper Hunlow (although he threatened Hunter that if he did anything to Willow he would put a curse on her, tear her to pieces and feed it to his plants. Hunter understood).

Both can be terrifying when angry or using all their power, although they are usually rays of sunshine.

In short, two rays of sunshine that help each other to relate to the group (don't mess with them, they are much more dangerous than they look)💚

Amity Blight

ohhhhh boy, she understands ☠️

She probably know Stolas! reader thanks to his parents being friends and/or business colleagues, similar to Boscha's parents.

Odalia insisted that Amity try to be her friend so that she could improve her relationship with her family (a very important one among the covens, especially the Oracle's).

So Amity took note and prepared herself for a capricious and pedantic prince, similar to Boscha.

Imagine his surprise when Stolas! reader ended up being the complete opposite, someone very reserved, shy and wanting to make REAL friends.

If we talk about Amity from the first season, at first she had difficulty accepting Lector, precisely because of his reputation, but they found that they had several things in common.

books for example.

Amity ended up running into Reader several times in the library while working, mainly in the reptile and botany areas, which seemed strange since he was in Oracle classes.

They would end up having conversations about frogs and what they were like outside of the boiling islands, it turns out that the reader's family could use Oracle magic even in the human world, but he loves to see the "rare" specimens they had, like the opossums or giraffes.

Being the least mean to him, Reader spent his time stuck next to Amity, and she eventually warmed up to him and she would keep him company, even open up to him.

He definitely knows about her arranged marriage, and he didn't like how it scared him, he can bet that on a couple of occasions Amity threw her away with her abobinable.

(although I think it is not impossible for him to accept her as a friend of himself and the reader if he shows he really wants to change or at least try not to take out his frustration on the reader)

defends him when someone tries to take away from his abilities as a member of the Oracle, he's like "do you think you know more than HIM??" and it definitely gets into hands sometimes😅

Amity HATES the reader's father, she considers him to be even worse than ODALIA. What kind of father commits his 14-year-old son?? (she hopes he finds out that they have been engaged since they were 11😬) and can't stand the way he talks about his son . If I could, I would send you the Alador abobinables.

She highly encourages reading hobbies, especially plants and reading, you can even read to the kids together!

she defends Stolas a lot! reader from her family when she has to see them, especially from her father, if she and the reader's fiancée get along at this point, they will most likely make an alliance to protect Reader.

Amity even tells him about Azura's books that she reads! and compare notes and drawings they make of the characters

Listen to any babbling or rant that the reader has to give, whether it be frogs, plants or prophecies he saw on his own in the stars, astronomy, etc. Even if she doesn't understand shit, she just nods and won't let anyone take away that beautiful moment from the reader.

Imagine Amity introducing Luz to the reader! she would be SO happy to see that they would both get along because they are "nerdy" in different ways, but that they complement each other well.

I think Amity is definitely rooting for Stolas! reader to confess directly if he has a crush, after all, he is cute, comes from a good family and has a big heart, who wouldn't want to be with him? It even helps you make a note!

She wants the reader to find REAL love and not be forced to have a partner for something like status.

She supports the reader all the way when she decides to reveal herself to her family, she knows how scary it is, so she even offers him not only a shoulder to cry on, but also to stay with her for a while.

She tells him how brave he was and how happy she is for him.

Overall, rich, misunderstood best friends who stick together 💜

Ben is like stupidly amazing with kids.

Sally loves him, she thinks he's the coolest in the manor and lets her say bad words sometimes, and even has a tea party once in a while.

Jeff isn't the greatest, and usually has a knack for making small children cry.

So when an orphaned child wanders up to the manor, and they're scheduled to babysit until Slender gets home, they agree to watch you until sunset.

Jeff has absolutely no clue what to do with you, and doesn't even think to offer you a snack or something to drink.

Ben is already returning from the kitchen with little packets of crackers and one of Sally's juice boxes.

Jeff will pick you up and plop you down at the table, sitting next to you and try to make an attempt at conversation.

But again, he's terrible with children, and tries asking you if you've seen the new GTA 6 trailer.

You look at him weird before continue munching on your crackers. You even go as far as scooting away from him a little bit.

Jeff is embarrassed by a 5 year old, but pretends he's not bothered by it. Ben sees right through his facade, and snickers to himself behind a well placed cough..

Ben knows how make you feel more comfortable, asking questions about you, because what else would a 5 year old have to talk about?

Their whole world consists of things that they do, not whatever sport was on TV last night or a new game that's being released, you were too young for that talk. The most interesting person they know is themself.

But no matter how many questions Ben tries to ask, you don't give them a glimpse of information about how you got here.

They agree to take you to the game room so you can mess around with whatever you can get your grubby hands on, whether it be the foosball table, the N64 scattered on the ground, the 30,000 dollar pool table-

THE THIEIRTY THOUSNAND DOALRA-

Jeff is faster than Ben, and swoops you up with a 'nOOoonononono', and you think it's the funniest thing that he's holding you upside down, because you laugh so hard you run out of breath.

And while Ben re-organizes the pool balls back into their neat little triangle, Jeff has fun just swinging you about, finding it amusing how easy children are entertained.

One way up, one way back down, swing you around in a circle like a football, dangle you by an ankle and toss you up to catch you. Like a little rhythm game.

He remembers back to his own childhood, the moments where his parents actually liked being parents, and his father tossing hm repeatedly on the couch, which of course is passed down to you.

"Again!"

"AGAAINN??? UGGHH!"

And you think it's hilarious how he's so annoyed, yet does it anyway. And secretly, he loves it.

And Ben loves watching him love it, like he gets to see a glimpse into Jeff's past that he never wants to talk about.

But eventually, as all children do, you grow tired, and instead of running back toward Jeff, you stay on the couch and curl up to watch whatever is flickering on the TV.

Ben will return with popcorn, and Jeff is sitting on the ground in front of you, showing you how to play this old vintage game called "The Mario Bros." that's only 8 pixels deep in graphics quality.

Ben holds a somewhat bittersweet smile, as he walks over and delivers the popcorn. After some thought he joins in as Player 2, and let's you get the sleep you so much needed.

Cosplay WIP and Doodle Dump >:3

Haven't really been working on a bunch of digital art lately bc I've been busy working on cosplays and crying over Stolitz XD

But I thought I'd show you all what I've been working on since I'm really excited about it! <3 (So many updates :D)

Let's start with Helluva doodles!

I finally started drawing Blitzø and Fizzy-Frog! <3 Fizzy looks so much healthier in the newst ep I could CRY ohhh my goddd. And both Fizz and Blitzø look so dapper! Little cuties! Little cuties who are friends again! My heart!

Next up: Cosplay props!

We've got a lot of stuff for the Vees, and then a liiiitle bit of Angel Dust progress to show y'all!

Let's start with Vox since I only have one main thing I've made so far!

I had an old pair of headphones that stopped working, and I'd already worn them to costest Vox (since I'm not going for the TV screen approach) and so I thought I could give them a makeover! I decided to do the symbols from his silly little hat, and paint the microphone tip to resemble the little red bauble at the end of his antenna!

I just sanded the labels off, painted everything in acrylic and then sealed it with clear nail polish, pretty simple stuff, but I'm really pleased with the effect! And I think it will be a nice touch for the costume! <3

Now onto Valentino! I have the most stuff for him so far bc everything that wretched man owns is cool AF and I wanted to make, like, all of it XD

I started with the guns from 1x02 ala: "Which of these makes me look sexier ;3" since I thought they were both pretty iconic and I definitely want to film that little clip once my cosplays are ready to go hehe

This pink one is definitely my favorite, both in the show and based on how it came out in the end! I've only ever built one propgun before this for Jinx, so it was really fun to get back to it again! Lots of math and measurements, but luckily I'm a little racoon creature who hordes recycling like my life depends on it XD Even though he actually bedazzles another gun in the meeting room in 1x02, I was not about to make a third one in the span of two weeks, so I decided to just put it on one side of the pink, and I really love it tbh!

The gold and grey definitely looks a bit more... cardboard-y, but I'm okay with it tbh, I don't love the design of this one as much, so I probably won't be using it on it's own as often as the pink! But I still think it turned out well overall! Especially bc by the time I got to this one my exacto-blade was crapping out on me hardcore lmao

I also have two hand options ready for Valentino! I noticed that sometimes he has gold claws, and sometimes his hands are fully black, so I thought it would be good to have a couple options!

I went ahead and ordered some pleather gloves which I think work really well for him on their own, but then I also took some fake nails and layered them with gold acrylic paints and clear nail polish to make his 'actual' hands. I figured if I need a particular close-up for a shot it would be really cool to use black facepaint on my skin, and then have these nails stuck on! I just used eyelash glue to test out affixing them last night, and I think it actually worked super well!

Since the nails are pretty, well, claw-like I don't want them on all the time, but I still need them to stay when I'm moving around in costume, and I think the eyelash glue is kind of the perfect things for my at-home cosplay needs! I'd definitely want to do something stronger if I was going to a con in these, but yeah - XD I'm rambling, anyways -

Let's move onto Velvette!

I had an extra set of gold nails I'd made, that I was originally planning on attaching to the gloves (I did not like how that looked lmao) but I didn't want them to go to waste, so I used some of the little gems and do-dads that I had laying around to make them match one of the bra-tops I'm planning to use for Velvette! (Yes that sparkly orange and pink thing on the left is what I tried to match it to!)

I have a plethora of blank fake nails now, so I think it would be really fun to make a pair that matches each of Vel's outfits! I hyper-fixated on nail art for a couple years when I was a kid, so I'm really excited to play with those skillz again lmao - especially because I can use acrylic paint for these instead of nail polish which really cuts down on cost and expands my color ranges exponentially!

The last thing I have to show you for the Vee's specifically is the wigs I ordered for them! (I want to scream, I'm so excited!!!!)

(All of these are from Wig Is Fashion btw, notspon or anything I just have really loved their wigs so far! I really hope these three work well!)

Finally, my gloves for Angel and a couple of my colored lights for filming came in, so I just threw on one of the outfits I have ready for him, the wig I styled, and the gloves to get a feel for how it was coming along :3

I think I want to get different little shorts for this look (maybe pleather?) and figure out a couple other details to add in, because I feel like there is currently too much 'blank' space in the look. I'm sure that will be lessened by the makeup, set, etc. But I want to make sure the extra looks I have for characters still feel 'designed'/styled well, obvi.

Anyways! Lots of work to do, and I still need to buy a new sewing machine so i can make some of the actual outfits from the show, but it's all a process lmao

I'm planning a full-on Angel CMV atm, as well as a ton of other videos, but that's all a ways away lmao, I wanna really put effort into it which means time haha

I did already post some little Cherri, Angel, Vox and Charlie closet-costests to my TT if y'all are interested! I've also made Millie and Blitzø horns, but tbh I just can't be assed to get pictures of all of that rn XD if you look at the most recent (as of rn lmao) 'cosplay updates' vid that's up, you can see the horns, wigs etc that I didn't show in this post!

OK so right off the bat, Talia Ryder as Jordan (Nancy & Jonathan's eldest)

Because like are you KIDDING me she's soooo Nancy said Copy Paste (Go off Queen) Like I could not cast this better if I tried. (like pinterest started suggesting photos of Natalia at one point) She looks like "I've never done anything wrong in my life" while hiding the dog-safe hairdye (The girls tried dyeing a dog hot pink ... they were bored) (would release 100 frogs into NYC)

this episode is a birthday special as u can tell from the title and it's also about 20 minutes long, orrrr if we're being precise, it's made of two 10-minutes-long episodes. at the beginning it pisses me off cuz nobita and shizuka initially forget gian's b-day and once suneo reminds them, all 3 of them and doraemon do the most to avoid attending his party. gian isn't the best person on the show and he's full of flaws but having fake friends is horrible...

ok I need witchy help again. There's a grove of trees behind my dorm that's being cut down and I know there's nothing I can physically do to stop it but I want to protect the animals that live there.

There are two barbed wire fences and a highway separating us so I've never actually been in it, but I've been spending several hours a day looking at this grove for abt a year and a half. There's a shipping company located behind the trees and semitrucks with shipping containers drive around it. Idk what company it is but now they're cutting down the trees, adding lights that block out the stars, and paving over it. I watched them rip about a fourth of it out with their machinery this morning.

It makes me so fucking furious I want to go over there and tell them to stop and so sad that I want to cry. Those trees have been such an important part of my own mental health even if I can't get close to them and I know SO many creatures live there. I've started having stress dreams abt them ripping it out when they started abt a week ago and a lot of my dreams involved using magic to stop it.

I tried googling it but I couldn't find any protective charms or spells for the environment, they were all protection for yourself that uses the environment. I don't want to want to hex that company, I just want to protect the animals that live there and give them a new place to stay. I am a baby witch who's also a broke/busy college student so smth that's quick and easy would be preferred but I'll take anything.

Every single fucking day I watch the cranes fly East to sleep on the river as the sun sets. I've seen them fly West to the swamps as the sun rises too. I saw two vultures courting the other day. The raccoons, cats, and opossums don't run from me anymore and will happily let me get within a few feet of them (I never try to touch them). I know exactly which trees the bats live in. I saw a moth that was bright blue and orange, mimicking a species of wasp. I saw a species of hawk I had never seen before. I talk and sing to the trees even if there are no animals there. That was the only place I've seen a wild fox. The cranes land in the swamp and hunt the frogs. There's a huge bullfrog that lives in the back corner. I've saved baby snakes and turtles from cars. They both easily fit in the palm of my hand. I thought I found an injured bird the other day and was totally ready to help it even though I don't know how (it turned out to be fine, just behaving really strangely). Every time it rains, I go out and pick worms off the sidewalk for hours. The trees are where I go to get away from the stress of my schoolwork, my two jobs, and my roommates.

I need this ecosystem so fucking much, I have hung so much of my mental health on it and now they're coming in and ripping it out and paving over it!!!! They're putting more barbed wire, more pavement, more streetlights. I want to see the tall grass and the puddles and the trees and the hills not a FUCKING PARKING LOT WITH TRUCKS BEHIND A FENCE. I AM SO SCARED FOR THE CREATURES THAT LIVE THERE, I NEED THEM TO BE OK. EVEN IF I LOSE THE TREES, I'LL FEEL BETTER KNOWING THAT THE ANIMALS ARE SOMEPLACE SAFE. “Kalim?” Jeanne's voice made the boy jump, his red eyes widening as he quickly dried the tears off his face. The raven haired girl wasn't a fool though, he wasn't ok.

“What happened?” She didn't even want to ask if he was ok, the answer was clearly a no, and there was no use debating the obvious.

“Nothing, I just–” he paused, taking a deep breath and showing her his thumb. “I just cut myself.”

Jeanne used her hand to analyze his finger, scared her hook could accidentally make the scratch worse. It wasn't deep, but it probably hurt because it was big. She asked him if he knew where the first aid kit was, he said he didn't know, so – with much protest from Kalim’s end – she just ripped a part of her red sash(?) off, wrapping it around his hand. The boy sighed.

“...sorry.”

“It's whatever. I can get another one.” She said nonchalantly, finishing to tie it around his hand. “Now, why were you crying?"

“I already said it, I cut–”

“No, you wouldn't cry because of that.” She demanded, her blue eyes capturing his red ones and making him bite his lip nervously. “Listen, Kalim… you can be vulnerable with me, really. Even if it's something stupid – which I don't think it is – I won't laugh.”

The white haired boy stayed quiet for a moment, until he ultimately gave up and looked down, his cheeks growing red in shame.

“I… I tried cooking something small. Just for me, you know? But… I ended up not only burning it but also hurting myself.” He then pointed to the sink, where a burnt pan laid, whatever food had been inside it was probably thrown in the trash. It explained the horrible smell she felt when getting into NRC’s kitchen.

“I thought Jamil didn't let you use a knife, or a stove?”

“He doesn't know.”

“Oh.” With that, she looked at him puzzled. “So… you're crying because it went wrong?”

“N-no, not really, it's just–” he groaned, resting his arms on the table and his head on them right after. Jeanne could see his frustration from a mile away. “I'm tired of not being able to do anything right, Jeanne. I can't even hold a knife properly.”

Oh.

Jeanne rubbed her hand up and down his back, her heart aching because of his pain, which was so clearly obvious. Kalim was shaking, he felt useless, he didn't understand why everything he made went so wrong. It was incredibly frustrating. The worst thing? Probably one of the most independent people he knew had caught him crying over not being able to cook a meal.

He… just felt so much shame.

“Kalim, look at me.” Jeanne asked, and he hesitantly complied. He saw a gentle smile on her face as she slowly passed her hands through his short hair. “Let's do it again, together. I'll guide you, and you’ll be able to do it by yourself.”

“No, you don't– I don't want to inconvenience you…” Kalim immediately refused, but was quickly silenced by a tender kiss on his forehead. Jeanne's eyes seemed to lock his gaze, making him weak and at her mercy, as she usually did.

It was a shame he couldn't hate her for the power she held over him.

“It's not inconvenient. I want to help you.” She said, a smile on her face. She made a small bun with her own hair, going to the sink to wash her hand and her hook, looking for alcohol to disinfect it. “I won't interfere unless I absolutely have to, come on. Let's make soup or something.”

“Are you sure?” He asked, still worried, but only received a smile from his girlfriend.

“Absolutely.”

With that, Kalim finally chuckled, the sound music to Jeanne's ears.

“Ok… thank you.”

🎀: Trixie has a few accessories. Her cloak, earrings, boots, and a weird scarf thing around her waist that my friend suggested I add. Also, her cloak has pockets on the inside bc my girl carries a LOT of stuff. Frog has their knitted frog hat and a belt bag thingy. I am planning on giving them pins or something in the future

🐋: honestly, Trixie would probably be totally freaking out on the inside, but when the Octonauts show up to rescue her, she's just like, "Nice of you to drop in. It was getting a bit boring here." For Frog, though, this actually has happened (it just feels right considering the show did it TWICE). Turns out, metal isn't very easy to digest. The whale shark had bad tummy ache, but Frog was unscathed. She was a hazzard to touch until all the stomach acid was scrubbed off of them, though.

💗: Trixie has some trust issues, so it took her a little while to warm up to most of the crew, especially since she hasn't really been exposed to creatures other than one's in the desert. The first two she warmed up to, though, were Peso and Kwazii (with Shellington being a close third). I'd say those two are the ones she's most comfortable with since she's spent the most time with them. Frog was even slower with warming up to the crew. They're not good at talking or holding conversations, and since they had very few memories left after however long they were left to rust, they barely ever left the launch bay. So, obviously, her favorite crew member is Tweak, since she was the one who spent the most time with Frog and worked with them to get them back into working shape

Bonus: Trixie doesn't cry often, or at all, really. She's good at masking her emotions, and it takes a LOT to make her cry. When she does, she always does her best to make sure it's in her room or a more secluded spot. The crew didn't see her cry until... (redacted bc lore stuff >:3). When she sees someone else crying, it's really awkward for her. Her first reaction is usually to give the person who's crying a bottle of water or something since crying dehydrates you. Frog does actually have a programmed crying emotion (she has a set amount of emotions her face can express due to programming and stuff), but they don't use it much. Usually, just when they get overwhelmed. When they see someone crying, they do their absolute best to stay out of the situation since they tend to accidentally make it worse.

“To the yards, then!” Stede picked a direction and strode off boldly. It had been a long day, but if there was one thing he didn’t mind a long day of, it was shopping. Admittedly it was a bit less indulgent on a twine budget but there was something to be said for the additional challenge of optimising every purchase for the best possible form, function and economy. He could tell Ed’s enthusiasm was flagging, but his own only grew as the sights and sounds and hell, even the smell of the livestock sales yards came into view.

“Oh, look at them, Ed! Aren’t they beautiful?” he cried, rushing forward to greet a couple of snuffling nostrils. 

“I dunno.” Ed said skeptically, eyeing up the bony creature that was currently making Stede’s acquaintance. “They look pretty rough to me.”

“Nonsense.” Looking around at their options, Stede had to concede, maybe not complete nonsense. “Alright, the pickings might be a bit slim. But you know what they say about roughness and diamonds.”

Diamonds was a strong word. And Ed knew fuck all about finding them, at least when it came to horses. Fortunately, Stede had been around the block enough to pick out the animals of the most sound health and fine breeding their budget could muster. He settled on a chestnut mare with a white strip and just enough cold blood in her to make her head big and her shoulders strong. Light on her feet, but up for the long trips to and from town and even pulling a small cart, he imagined.

“Plus,” Stede added. “She has the most darling eyes, don’t you think?”

Ed didn’t know anything about frogs or gullets, but at least that, he could agree on. She looked… sweet. Patient. He’d never noticed horses had eyelashes before. Never really been this close to one for this long. She was kind of beautiful, wasn’t she? Huh. 

Stede’s expectant expression broke out into a grin.

“I knew you’d like her! Now, where is Mr Phillips…”

He zeroed in immediately on the vendor. Ed watched as his confidence bloomed, gesturing over to where he stood with the horse. Her ears twitched. Ed nudged her.

“This is going to be good, watch.”

She was more interested in nuzzling his hand in case of a stray piece of apple or other, but Ed was enraptured by Stede. He loved a good haggle, did Stede, and as it turned out he was quite good at it too when he felt confident in what he was talking about. He scarcely let on how head-over-heels he could be when it came to saving living creatures from uncertain fates, especially ones with big doleful eyes, and instead executed the fine balance between praising the man’s wares and insisting upon discounts for every fault with a finesse Ed neither knew nor often bothered with. It had come in handy more than once now that not just one but both of them had recently become… uh, lower on the wealth.

With a delighted cry and a handshake, Stede declared that they’d struck a deal - not just for the horse, but some simple feed and tack and a cart to take it all home with. Loved a good haggle, did Stede.

“There we are!” he announced, returning triumphant as if he hadn’t just finessed all but the shirt off the poor Mr Phillips’ back. “You’re coming home with us, girl. Perhaps not a diamond, but I’d say at least a very fine garnet, don’t you think?”
