Career Options after Engineering – What to do after B.Tech? - Arya College

B.Tech engineer has many opportunities in the world to start a career. These opportunities are when you are an undergraduate or after completion, so opportunities are not limited to the below list.

Students can choose their interesting path. After your undergraduate, you may choose a job or higher education as there are many job opportunities and higher education programs, but you must look into interesting ones.

Career With GATE, CAT, AND GRE:

Lack of clarity arises due to lack of clear information also Job prospects for B.Tech graduates with clear information any human being with their reason can arrive at a nice conclusion.

GATE: Opportunities after GATE exams are depends upon the college i.e. if it is private or government In the case of government the total 2-year expense will be anywhere around 50k-80k (excluding hostel).

CAT: Anyone can get Education Loan for the same and The tuition fees will be anywhere from 12 lakhs to 20 lakhs.

GRE: GRE options for B.Tech Graduates or Graduate Record Exam is an exam used for admission to Masters or PG courses around the world and Living Cost is higher there than in India also cost from 35,000$ to 45,000$ a year depending upon the universities.

SALARY:

GATE: After GATE varies with departments, colleges, and personal choices, also the opportunities must be divided among core engineers (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil) and CS, and IT engineers.

CAT: The salary of CAT offered to MBAs vary with the institutes they do their MBA from also Doing MBA from premier institutes like IIM can give you a package that will be between 20 lakhs to 40 lakhs a year.

GRE: A salary MBA at a foreign university can fetch you anywhere between 50k$-70k$ per annum depending upon the university.

STIPEND:

GATE: Indian government offers a stipend of 12,400 rupees per month if one chooses a Teaching Assistantship during M. Tech and The Stipend are 15,000 and 28,000 for Research assistantship and integrated Ph.D. students.

CAT: There is no stipend generally at MBA colleges, some colleges have that.

GRE: One can avail of stipends at foreign universities by going for Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships during their MS, also there is no reported stipend opportunity for MBA students.

Alternative Career Paths B.Tech Graduates:-

1. Entrepreneurship and Startups:- Startups in India are becoming a huge success. B.Tech graduate, if you have those creative ideas to start a business of your own, then entrepreneurship is a great career choice.

However, starting your own business is not an easy task and There are multiple negative sides to entrepreneurship as well. But if you are well aware of all such difficulties and ready to face them, you must go for it.

2. Technical Content Writing and Documentation:- They are experts who create product manuals, how-to guides, online help sections, journal articles, and other literature that simplifies and clarifies technical information.

These writers frequently have a background in their subject matter, whether it be in science, medicine, engineering, software, manufacturing, or another technical sector, whether learned academically or on the job.

Technical writing courses deal with writing about anything related to technology such as presenting technical information to end-users in a simple manner Technical Writing Courses are available in Certifications and Diplomas also PG Diploma in Technical Writing in Business Management and the Scientific and Technical Writing Programme are two of the best courses.

A Technical Writer in India Earns an average of INR 5,01,000 per annum as a base salary, So Skills such as communication, writing, data visualization, presentation, etc are crucial to a technical writer also To Become a Content Writer, candidates must pursue English writing courses.

3. Project Management:- This is one of the best career paths to take after completing a B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering and The project manager's role is to coordinate the efforts of a programming team.

The project manager detects technical problems for the company or a client, which necessitates analytical skills as well as problem-solving abilities also A project manager is expected to be well-versed in technology and computer systems.

4. Technical Sales and Marketing:- Do not underestimate the popularity of a Marketing/Sales job, So If you love traveling or interacting with others and if you are creative there is a huge opportunity waiting for you out there. You can also work in your niche segment as a techno-marketing person and later pursue an additional degree or MBA to have an edge also If you have the desire in you to excel in customer service, there are plenty of job openings with small, medium, and large organizations that are struggling to find good people in this field. You can choose a non-voice or voice process depending on your interest.

5. Research and Development:- After B.Tech in Engineering Physics, you can get involved in research and development activities and You can even get hired by different industries like telecom, microelectronics, lasers, microdevices, etc.

Industrial Engineer: Your job will be to develop the core of production and manufacturing in the organization you will work in.

Research Scientist: Taking up a job as a research scientist, will involve you to work in an educational institute where experiments will be carried on for further research, in the field of new technologies.

Physicist: Your job will be to analyze the workings of various processes in the organization and present that data in terms that are easily understandable.

Financial Analyst: Since the physics major is about statistics and mathematical analysis, as an engineering physics graduate, you can work as a financial analyst.

6. Civil Services:- Civil service is another excellent employment option for engineering courses who have completed their B.Tech This domain is for individuals who are deeply patriotic and wish to dedicate their lives to serving the country and improving its system also you must pass the civil service test and pursue your interest to become a public servant.

Many Professions in civil service are:-

All India Services: IPS and IAS

Group A services: -AFHCS and PCS

Central (Group A) services, such as IRPFS, IPS, IFS, and IRS-ITs

Eligibility:

The candidate must be 21 years old.

7. Join Indian armed forces:- Engineering is needed in the Indian Armed Forces as well for technical support to the armed troops on the ground with various technical/mechanical issues.

The Indian Armed Forces readily employ on-ground engineers in the following three branches:

The Corps of Engineers

The Corps of Signals

Electronics & Mechanical Engineers

Eligibility for B.Tech graduates is different from that of other jobs because of on-ground duty and the engineers must be physically fit as well to be able to survive in danger-prone military areas.

Conclusion:

Making any choices in Career options after B.Tech there are so many exciting fields or stuff that really make you happy and then go for it a person advising in the engineering field might recommend that also you can dive into the same area and get a Master’s or Ph.D. and Engineering degrees are versatile, as you can easily transition to new careers.

Engineer and understand engineering principles then consider what aspects of your work as well as an engineer you enjoy and look for an occupation that suits you better Knowing what you want from your job is the first step in picking the right path.

shout out to me for breaking 50k on bridges, exactly 4 months after I started jotting down my first plot notes for this fic with the words “quick one shot concept”

end of year fic writer roundup

Thank you @hawkeish for tagging me in this. My writing is pretty much all I have to show for this year other than a handful of art pieces. I don’t know if I’ve improved at all but at least I can say I’ve done a lot of it. I apologise in advance for how long this is. I’m a really quiet person until someone asks me to talk about my fics and then I don’t shut up.

Word count: I’m not sure whether redrafting counts but if I include all of Night Shift my entire published word count (on AO3 and Tumblr) comes to: 192,649 (and if I tag on a few unpublished bits and pieces to that it comes to a slightly more satisfying: 205,799)

If we’re just counting things I wrote for the first time this year then it’s about: 79,770 (plus a potential 40-50k written between January and March that I still need to type up)

New things I tried this year: I got into Fenders and started my first fic for that pairing the life that, here, awaits. I also started taking writing prompts here for the first time which has turned out to be a really fun way of taking a break from my longer wips when I feel the need to. Thank you to everyone who has sent me prompts for both your interest and your patience.

Fic I spent the most time on: that’s easily Night Shift. It’s my baby but I kind of can’t wait to be done with it.

Fic I spent the least time on: I vaguely remember writing this one on my phone in the garden so I doubt it took me very long. I also remember being impressed with how quickly I wrote this Merribela piece set after the Qunari attack at the end of act 2. It was my first prompt so I had no idea I was even capable of writing something short before that.

Favourite thing I wrote: I feel like I should say Night Shift because I know I’ve achieved a lot with it. It turns out its a big thing to have a story with four main characters, alternating viewpoints and interlocking storylines and I’m proud of myself for having more or less pulled it off. Honestly though, I liked it so much more before I started redrafting it. Now that I’m reading over it and focusing so much on what I need to improve it’s sometimes difficult to be positive about it. But I’ve had some really lovely comments about it and knowing that people are reading the story and enjoying it despite the problems I have with it is really encouraging. It’s enough to keep me going so thank you everyone who has supported me through it so far.

Other favourite thing that I wrote that I can just read over and feel happy about without wanting to go back and fix every little thing: and you are starry, starry, starry which is just Handers fluff, pure and simple.

Favourite thing I read: I’ve read so much this year! I think I burnt out a little bit in the last few months and I’m just starting to get back into looking for new things to read. A lot of my favourite things I read this year were covered in this fic rec post and here are a few others:

I was so made up when Accursed Ones by @thethirdamell came back recently. What an amazing fic! If you haven’t read it and you’re a fan of Anders then you need to go do that. It’s so worth your time. The writing is fantastic and Anders’ character development over the course of Awakening and the first acts of DA2 is so wonderfully done. The original characters Amell and Hawke are some of the most compelling I’ve come across. I don’t know where to begin with how much I adore everyone’s characterisation and I just really can’t wait to see how the story will progress into act 3.

Another one that really stood out for me was Homeward Bound by ThePoetTree which features an Amell who has been kicked out of the Wardens and an Anders who was killed by Hawke and saved by Justice. They meet on the run and decide to travel together. The characterisation is wonderful and it’s just such an engaging read. The whole thing was revised shortly after I first read it and I had absolutely no issue reading it over again when it updated. I really hope we’ll get to see more of it in the new year.

I also want to give a mention to @johaeryslavellan’s Dorian x Trevelyan fic A World With You because it made me cry on more than one occasion and I swear I don’t usually do that but the writing is just that touching and beautiful. (And I want to say thank you for being so lovely and encouraging with my own fics. It truly has meant a lot to me.)

Also, @hawkeish has one of my favourite Hawkes I’ve come across this year. this is how the light gets in was the first fic of hers I read and you know when you find a fic and you can’t quite put your finger on what it is but something just grabs you and it’s like this! I want more this! I really can’t wait to see what else you’ll come up with, Ish. (And thank you, too, for all the encouragement and the times you’ve recommended my fics.)

Writing goals for next year: To finish Night Shift and the life that, here, awaits. To make a start on some of the other ideas I have. If any of those ideas ends up being another long fic then I think I’m just going to write and post it a chapter at a time because I’ve learned from Night Shift that redrafting and editing an entire finished longfic is not as fun as writing it in the first place. I just want to have fun with it really and not put too much pressure on myself. Let’s hope that works out.

This post is too long but before I go I just want to thank a few other mutuals who have been so lovely and supportive over the past year and are also wonderfully talented writers and artists, @fandomn00blr, @kirkwallgremlin, @wanderingnork, @dalish-rogue. DANGER OF FALLING / short fic

@alwayskissmeatnight 🍯, you may not even remember requesting this one since it was like some time last century or something, but anyway, here it is, sorry for the long wait and I hope you like it!

Also, this one marks 40/50 done! Only ten more to go! The file for these is 50k words... I can’t believe it! Let me take this opportunity to thank everybody for the likes and reblogs and lovely comments on the past 40 of these, and stick with me for the last 10 too, okay? 💙

You caught me doing something dangerous and flipped out

“Hey! That’s illegal!”

Lucas hears the voice from down below, but he ignores it. He loves climbing things – trees, scaffolds, walls, he doesn’t care. And he’s good at it, too.

He has no clue whether it is, in fact, illegal to climb a street lamp post. It probably is, but unless the guy below is a cop, Lucas hasn’t really got anything to worry about, has he?

He chances a peek. No uniform in sight. No problem, then. Lucas moves a bit, sitting a bit more comfortably at the top of the post. He hates all the high buildings in Paris. He could have such a great view if it wasn’t for all the flats.

“Lucas! You have to come down!”

Huh? He looks down again, and the guy is staring up, his head in his neck.

And even from here, Lucas recognizes that face.

It’s the new guy in school. The one he asked Alex about. The one with the face of a model and the body of a renaissance statue.

Eliott.

How does Eliott know his name? Why does he even know who Lucas is?

If Lucas is honest, he has to confess that he has been dreaming about Eliott these past few weeks, both at night and during the day. He has been caught between the desire to walk up to him in the hallway to start a conversation and the fear that somebody like Eliott wouldn’t be interested in Lucas. He looks down again, where Eliott is still looking up at him.

“Shit, Lucas, please! It’s too dangerous!”

It really isn’t. It’s only a couple of meters. Lucas wraps his legs a bit tighter around the pole, and lets go of the top of the lamp. He waves at Eliott.

“Fuck! Hold on to that thing! You could fall!”

Lucas won’t fall. He’s done this kind of thing millions of times. Whenever he feels lost, he climbs as high as he can. It calms him to feel the breeze in his hair, to look down upon the world at his feet, to see how small everything is from up above. It gives him a new perspective, literally. It brings hope.

He grins, throwing his head back. He wants to laugh out loud. Nothing can touch him, up here. His mom being in the hospital, his dad not replying, the late rent due to Mika, the failed French Lit test, the fact he is using Chloé as a fake girlfriend because he is afraid of coming out to his friends, his crazy crush on the boy standing right below – it all becomes insignificant. He knows he will have to face it all again when he reaches street level again, but for now, it cannot get him. Nothing will drag him under as long as he is high enough, out of reach.

“Please, just come down, okay?”

Eliott sounds almost pleading.

“Why?”, he calls back, challenging. What is it to Eliott, anyway?

“What if you fall? You could break something. You could break your neck. Hell, Lucas, I don’t want to stand here and watch you plunge to your death, dammit!”

Lucas’ laugh dies on his lips. Eliott sounds… upset. Anxious. Worry tinges his words.

“Just, please, please, please, come down okay?”

He is almost begging Lucas now.

And Lucas doesn’t really know what is happening. He doesn’t know how Eliott knows his name, he doesn’t know how he spotted Lucas up here, he doesn’t know why he is so adamant for Lucas to come down, but a reckless feeling takes hold of him.

Eliott knows who he is. Eliott seems to care about his well-being. Eliott is actually talking to Lucas – okay, fine, yelling, but who cares about the details –, and Lucas doesn’t want that to end.

In a split second, he decided to slide down the pole full speed, no hands.

He hears Eliott shriek, but he just smiles. About fifty centimeters from the ground, he clamps his legs tight, tight enough to come to a stop, hovering right above the cobblestones.

Eliott has covered both his eyes with his hands, whimpering, but when no crash of a Lucas-size object occurs, he peeks gingerly through his fingers.

“Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck! You almost gave me a heart attack! I thought you fell, I thought you’d fucking die right in front of me! Fuck, I almost lost it!”

“Nothing happened,” Lucas smirks. “I am still in one piece, as you see.”

He sets his hands down, and steps of the lamp post. He straightens himself, shakes his muscles loose a bit, beats the dust off his jeans. Eliott is standing right there, less than a meter away, following Lucas’ movements, as if to check there is indeed no broken bones, no blood.

And Lucas decides to go all in.

“Why were you so worried anyway?”

Eliott suddenly flushes. Lucas watches, intrigued by the faint pink that appears on the apples of Eliott’s cheeks. Adorable, Lucas thinks. He has never thought of Eliott as cute before – he’s used words like impeccable, gorgeous, flawless, breathtaking and scorching hot – but right now, he wants to gobble the older boy up.

“Why did you flip out when you saw me do something dangerous?”

Lucas is genuinely curious, but something takes root inside his heart as he speaks. Something he hardly can describe, something wild and exciting, something that has his breath speed up and his cheeks burn and that makes millions of butterflies erupt in his stomach.

Eliott blushes more fervently now, and his eyes rove over Lucas’ face – his eyes, his nose, his jaw, his mouth. They stay there for a long second. When he looks up again, Lucas gasps. Eliott’s eyes are dark, and something almost dangerous has appeared in them. But Lucas is not afraid.

Neither of them smiles anymore.

And then, in an almost feral move, they both lean in, grasp each other’s face, and kiss like there is no tomorrow.

Above them, the street lamp slowly blinks on as the twilight sets in, but neither of them notices.

Reworking the plot & getting my hands dirty.

Writing journey #2.

Sat 06/03/2021 - Word Count: 28,150 19.38 So, a month ago, today, actually, I started writing a book. For context, I've sorted out scenes and planned my plot; I'm now simultaneously writing my first draft and outlining scenes in more detail - I'm just into act two of my draft and just into act three of the outline.

I included today in my first writing post, which you can find here, but, while outlining, I realised something that will result in a major plot change (even though I probably should wait until revisions, it sorts out the climax I'm currently incredibly vague on, and will help me actually be able to complete the draft), and felt it was time to start a different post, because the other one was long, and already had its own focus.

Previously, I've been setting mildly insane word count goals, and even though I'm sticking to vague targets, I'm going to drop that, because I need to do a major plot change, and that'll mean the word count isn't going up that much for a while.

So, I have my first and second acts good, but while outlining act three, I've realised the event at the start of act three would work better as a climax than the vague battle idea I have. It just seems more original, more effective, but it means I need to shift events around and re-figure the first block of act three. I'll begin tonight, but it's already 8pm, so I'll probably do most of it tomorrow.

Sun 07/03/2021 - Word Count: 28,365 08.24 I'm reworking act three, and I think I may just drop drafting for the moment and focus on incorporating the edits I have in mind, then start drafting over. I know all the advice says not to go back and edit, but this is a big change I can't wait to do, so it seems opportune to just make the others, too.

08.31 I've now finished reworking act three, and I'm much more satisfied with it than I was before. I do now need to go through the scenes again, however.

13.57 Still re-scening. This is frustrating, but I've decided when I'm back to drafting, I'm going to drop my daily minimum to just 500 words - even though I'll make very little progress at that pace, it's more realistic considering I'm about to be plunged back into the world of homework and commuting, and it's something I'll always be able to meet to help me keep in the habit of daily writing. Word count isn't applicable when I'm doing re-scening like today, though.

Something else I've noticed, when I'm writing literally anything, I'm just scribing the words I'm literally hearing in my head, which is a little bit of a problem because where I wrote 'meet' just now, I meant 'meet' but heard 'eat' in my head and wrote 'eat'.

17.07 I feel like I'm finally making some progress - I've been writing on-and-off all day. My word count has actually decreased a couple hundred words since yesterday, but Scrivener is convinced I've written 42,000 words today, which I obviously haven't. I've typed a lot of words, but not that many, not all of which added to that since deleting words takes words off that number. It thinks I've written so many, however, because I duplicated my act one folder twice (then deleted it, obviously, because I don't need three copies of the same act) but Scrivener doesn't take off the words when you delete the file, only when you literally hit backspace.

17.50 Sorting out my climax, I'm realising how bad it was before. Which I guess is good, because it shows internal criticism and growth...? Or something...?

21.04 I've totally planned out the majority of act three, but I haven't finished it because where I'm up to ends with my characters essentially making a game plan, and since I'm not yet sure what that game plan is, I can't outline the bit where they carry out the plan, but I'll do that later. I've incorporated some of the edits I wanted to make, though I've left a couple out because they're less drastic and I'm not sure whether or not to include them, so I'm going to sort that either during or after my first draft.

Since I've made quite a few changes that will affect the parts I've already drafted, I'm going to start my draft over, and reset my word count, but I'll do that tomorrow. For now, Scrivener thinks I've written 42,385 words today, which I absolutely have not, and my word count is currently 28,365, but I'm going to remove every outline and drafted piece I've done so I can start from zero for what I'm going to call draft #1.4, because I already wrote a version of about 40% of it.

God, my word count has gone back to 0 of my minimum 50,000. That hurts. It really hurts. My actual goal is more 70-90K, but 50K is my minimum, so that's what I'm going with for now.

Mon 08/03/2021 - Word Count: 820 So, I wrote 820 words before school, then got home, attempted to do some homework and lost all motivation and will to do... anything. Which means I'm very glad I did over my 500 words this morning.

Tue 09/03/2021 - Word Count: 1,367 15.07 I called this a #1.4 draft, but it's more like a #1.3. Anyway, writing is so much less stressful when I'm working from something I've already written - with the first section, so far, at least, I'm basically just editing the writing itself rather than the events because I'm pretty happy, at least at the moment, with my first couple chapters. Very little thinking required.

Also, it's been over 30 hours since I've written because I did my writing before school yesterday, but haven't written yet today because I've got so much work to get done for school. It feels like it's been forever.

16.17 I've finished rewriting chapter one, and still have a lot of fuel in my tank (that's a hideous metaphor) but I think I'm going to cut off today at 547 words, just because I have quite a lot on my plate this week, and I'd like to invest some time in actually reading the book I started eight days ago, and am only 200 pages of the way through.

Wed 10/03/2021 - Word Count: 2,082 I could write significantly more than 500 words most days, but it really is easier to set a minimum that doesn't feel like a strain, so that's what I'm sticking with for now.

Thu 11/03/2021 - Word Count: 2,801

Fri 12/03/2021 - Word Count: 3,405

Sat 13/03/2021 - Word Count: 32,211 07.40 I've just had nothing extra to say the last couple days, which is ironic considering how much I wrote each day of the last post, which went up yesterday! Anyway, it's finally Saturday, and even though I have exactly zero motivation to do anything this morning, I've been awake for two hours already (I recently discovered I like mornings??) and I think it's time to get going. Still sticking to my 500 word minimum, but since it's Saturday, I'm going to invest most of the day in writing, so I should surpass that.

08.20 I don't think I've mentioned yet that I dubbed this WIP Bay Tree in this post. Sorry if I have, but I skimmed this post and can't find it. So, this is about to get messy. I'm basically just cleaning up my prose, but there's so little point doing that when I'm not certain each scene will stay. There's no point editing a chapter unless I know it's sticking around.

So we're reverting, and this is about to get messy. I didn't quite finish my initial draft of chapter seven, because I wasn't sure how exactly the event at the end of it would happen, but I think I'm just going to delve into it. I'm going to add everything, including outlines, back to my word count, finish writing chapter seven, then pick up where I left off in chapter nine. Okay. That's why my word count is jumping around.

And, just like that, I've gone from 4,074 to 28,864. Well, 500 words accomplished. Surpassed, in fact, by just 24,290.

I'm going to aim to just hit 30K by the end of this weekend. I can easily do 1,136 words in two days.

As I've mentioned before, I haven't outlined all the way to the end and through the climax--I have a fairly clear idea of how I want it to do go down, but I'm not sure what I want the characters' plan to actually be, so I currently have 21 chapters, but I'm projecting 23-26, which, at about 3,000 words each, is pretty damn good, especially when it'll just get longer as I redraft (she says optimistically).

Already feeling more motivated now my word count's higher.

09.54 Oh! Also, I logged onto Tumblr today to find someone reblogged my last writing post with a really positive, encouraging comment. It's nice to think I'm bringing someone else a little joy with this.

11.13 And we hit 30K! I'm not quite done for the day, but I do need to go pack. Also, I've been operating under the impression the minimum word count for a novel is 50K, but it's actually 40K, which, though I'm only about 40% of the way to my projected total word count, I'm officially 75% of the way to being able to say I've written a novel.

I'm so glad I've gotten as far as I have, and I just hope I can keep myself going to the end.

12.27 This post is going to look really strange to read - if you're only looking at the word counts, it looks like I've written nearly 27K words today. That makes sense.

Oh, and I finished chapter seven. Like an hour ago.

13.52 At this point, I have literally no idea what continuity things I've already established, so I'm just going by a let-my-future-self-suffer philosophy.

14.36 That's chapter nine done. That leaves chapters 10 to nobody-knows. I'm going to stop writing now, but I wrote nearly 4,000 words today (plus recounting about 20K) so I don't exactly think this cut-off will be detrimental.

Sun 14/03/2021 - Word Count: 35,548 07.58 I’ve written over a thousand words already, and it isn’t even 8am yet. Being a morning person is genuinely the best thing ever as an introvert--I’m asleep when people want to socialise, and awake when no-one else is. That makes me sound like a hermit. I love it anyway, and feel like I’m stacking up for a good writing day. 35K is probably a little overambitious, but what’s life without aspiration?

09.04 As I’m going, I’m realising my plot is actually coherent, and being surprised that I can actually make a story without plot holes (as of yet.)

09.21 And that makes the first eleven chapters drafted!

...And, Houston, we have a problem. Dammit. Eleven chapters, and I haven’t established one of the most important world-building points. Which is especially irritating because it needs to be established by chapter twelve. Unless I can establish it at the start of chapter twelve? We’ll go with that, so I don’t have to go back, then I’ll sort it out in edits or draft two or something.

I’ve just started writing chapter twelve, but I think, having written 2,600 words today already, I need a break. I have less than 500 words until I hit 35K, but I’m going to leave it for now, and come back this evening. I should be able to hit 40K this week.

18.19 And that makes 35K. Chapter twelve is only two scenes, and I’ve written one, but having written 3,000 words so far today, I’m going to leave it until tomorrow.

Mon 15/03/2021 - Word Count: 36,337 17.19 So there’s a crucial plot point just after my midpoint, and I’m not completely sure what to do. I mean, I know what I’m doing--I just wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted it to go, but now I know. The issue is other stuff needs to be pre-established, and I’ve worked out where it needs to go, but I don’t know whether or not I want to go back and write those bits now, or just make note of it and add it in draft two.

I think I’m just going to make note, plough ahead, and deal with it in draft two. I’m trying to figure out exactly how I’m going to operate after this draft: things generally say put it down for a few weeks, come back for edits, then go into your next draft, but I feel like I’m already going to have so many edits gathered by the time I reach the end of this draft, I should just go back into it, but time will probably be beneficial. Not that it actually matters now. I’m only just halfway through an under-draft (by that I mean it’s going to get a lot longer). I’m going to add new scenes in my next draft and generally fiddle with plot aspects, but as quite a linear writer, I think I’m more naturally inclined to just incorporate aspects in a draft rather than as edits. I’m not sure. Does that even make any sense?

Depending on when I finish this draft, I think I’ll plan to pick it back up May 1st, and just see how I’m feeling. But, again, this all depends on when I finish the draft, and how I’m feeling when that time comes.

Wed 17/03/2021 - Word Count: 38,408 08.04 This is mostly irrelevant to my project, but I just wanted to mention the odd fact that I’m definitely a plotter when it comes to longer pieces, but when I do shorter pieces, creative or essays, for school, I hate planning, and just start immediately, then go back and edit. Huh.

Thu 18/03/2021 - Word Count: 38,950 I’m going to edit this, but writing the date just now I noticed I’ve put 2019 for the last three days. It’s absolutely not, and I know why I did that, but still.

14.31 Also, Oxford commas? Found out what they were. Granted, that was actually a few days ago.

Fri 19/03/2021 - Word Count: 40,139 06.55 Even though I wrote 500 words yesterday, I didn’t quite reach my goal of 39K, just because I had to stop writing 50 words off, and by the time I had the opportunity to go back, I just wanted to go to bed. So, today, my goal is to hit 40K words, and officially be able to say I’ve hit the minimum word count for a novel.

Honestly, I’m starting to lose my love for this project. I’m still enjoying working on it, don’t get me wrong, but I’m anticipating finishing it because I know exactly what I want to write next. I feel like I’m mostly still working on it as a lesson, and I know it’s not what I ultimately want to write--mostly because it’s not super high-concept, and high-concept stuff is what I want to be writing. I am still enjoying working on it, I’m just not sure I’ll get to the ‘final line-edits’ stage. But who knows?

10.19 And that marks 40K. We’re in novel terriority, people. And, yes, I could correct that spelling, but I’d like to draw attention to how bad I am at spelling when typing. I’m excellent at spelling in writing, and wrong spellings bother me, but when I’m typing, my fingers are just trying to keep up with my mind, which means I try to type a letter and the one after it at the same time, and often end up with letters in the wrong order and punctuation in the wrong place. Or I just hit halfway between two keys instead of the key I’m going for, and type a wrong letter. Anyway, that was meant to say territory. See? I can spel..

Or I just double the punctuation instead of the last letter.

So I’m definitely not meeting my old goal of 80K words or a finished draft by the end of the month--that’d be another 40K words in just 12 days--but I’m definitely on track to finish by the end of April.

Sat 20/03/2021 - Word Count: 40,692 15.30 God, second acts are hard. I hate being in the middle. At the start, you have novelty, and at the end (not that I would know from experience) you have the knowledge you’re near the end, that you’ve already written most of it.

I’m currently operating the reminder, ‘You’ve written an act before, why not again?’, in hopes that’ll eventually extend to, ‘You’ve finished a draft before, why not again?’ and ‘You’ve written an entire book before, why not again?’

I’ve literally written 243 words so far today, and I just don’t want to. Normally, I sit down, I slog through the first hundred or so words, then pick up momentum. Maybe it’s just because chapter 13 is a boring part to write. Ha. 13. Just my luck.

I’m being nice to myself because a lot has happened in my life over the last few days, but I still want to write a minimum of 500 words, even though most Saturdays I can write more like 3,000.

21.41 I’d like to be asleep. That sounds like fun. Today slipped through my grasp, and I haven’t even written 300 words, but I am going to try to at least hit 500. And then maybe write thousands and thousands tomorrow, but I’m also going to bake a cake, and I’m notorious for being able to make cooking and baking take at least three times as long as is necessary.

21.57 So I got just past 500. Relatively speaking, that’s not that impressive for me, but it’s more words than most people in the world added to their manuscripts today, so I have to give myself some credit. (I’m working on crediting myself for productivity rather than degrading myself for not being productive--I could go on for hours about how much it pisses me off that capitalism teaches us productivity=worth in everything, not just business, but I’m going off on a tangent.)

Sun 21/03/2021 - Word Count: 41,466 08.08 Cakes baked! And I’ve come to a conclusion about how irritating I am to myself--I didn’t fully outline the latter half of act two (by which I mean I have each scene and a purpose of each scene, but virtually no detail) which I can absolutely cope with, but it does slow me down. Anyway, I’m waiting for my cakes to cool, then I can ice them.

14.28 I wanted to write up to 42K this weekend, which I don’t think is going to happen. I’ve written 774 words, so passed my 500-word minimum, but haven’t yet reached 42K, and don’t think I’m going to this weekend. I just don’t have much motivation, which may just be because of the part I’m on, but I’d rather work through this part really slowly then pick up the pace when I get to the part I want to be writing, than force myself to write this section quickly and poorly, then not want to continue into act three. So, sticking to 500 words a day; I may do more later, but I’m leaving it for now.

Mon 22/03/2021 - Word Count: 42,006 17.56 God, I don’t want to write today. I’m going to anyway, because I haven’t yet failed 500 words. They can be a shitty 500 words, but they have to be 500 words. Also, the scene I wrote yesterday? Absolutely getting deleted. But I’m leaving it for now because I refuse to lose those 800 words.

I really enjoy putting edits at the bottom of scenes in brackets and making them unnecessarily wordy so Scrivener thinks I’ve written significantly more words than I actually have.

18.31 Yay, did it. I’m really hoping I can just work through this low spot and don’t have to take a break. I’m on the penultimate chapter of act two, and the first few chapters of act three are really exciting, so I’ll know if I need to take a break based on whether I get motivated when I get to that part.

Tue 23/03/2021 - Word Count: 42,124 16.37 GOD, I need a break. I don’t have motivation, even for 500 words. You know what? I’m just going to make a note of the scene idea I had earlier, and I’m going to take a week’s break. Unless I get antsy, in which case I may end it earlier, but, I’m not going to write again until Tuesday the 30th. Unless I get antsy. FUCK.

I’m just reminding myself breaks are good and important, but I still hate that I’m taking one without finishing my first draft. Tue 30/03/2021, I will be back! Though my word count may increase between now and then as I note down any ideas I have, which I will update with. Okay. Just leave it.

Sun 28/03/2021 - Word Count: 42,150 10.47 Since Tuesday, I’ve made some notes on my phone of little things I want to change, but haven’t added them to my project file, so the word count hasn’t gone up.

Last night, I was just thinking about how badly I wanted to get back to this project, but this morning, I just... don’t. I’ve been thinking it through, and I’m not ready to drop this project yet, but I’m just not happy with what I have at the moment. So, I’m going to add my notes to the file, and then leave it for a few weeks, so I can return with edits in mind, apply them, and then start what I guess will be like a 1.7 draft, because I didn’t finish this draft.

In the meantime, however, I do want to keep writing, so I’m going to start another project in the meantime, which I can work on a lot in the next few weeks because, in a few days, I get a couple weeks off, which won’t be completely free of work, but will give me a lot more time to dedicate to this.

I think I’m going to say I’ll return to Bay Tree (or at least review, if, say, I just want to dedicate a little more time to whatever phase of the new project before I move on) on May 10th, because that’s basically when I get to relax after my exams finish.

So I’ll add the notes I have so far, keep making notes on my phone, and return on May 10th.

Harry just. Relaxes. His eyes slip closed, pushing his entire face into that spot underneath Louis’ chin, where his hair is still growing, neat and prickly. The scent of Louis’ cologne drifts into Harry’s nose, light and fresh, and it’s calming. Comforting. His breathing syncs up with Louis’ quickly, and Harry feels so much better than he had five minutes ago he almost wants to cry.

General Assembly Software Engineering Immersive

Hello All, instead of posting my normal content relating to cars and/or trucks, I will be taking a deeper dive into my daily life, particularly regarding the software engineering immersive program that I am currently undergoing, which is a technology bootcamp. For a couple of months, I am going to sway away from discussing different sectors within the automotive industry while I focus strictly on technology, but automotive is not going anywhere so stay tuned for big announcements following;)

What Is It?

Currently I’m completing General Assembly’s Software Development Immersive, which is a “12 week award-winning program that has expert instructors and career coaches, and connect graduates with 19k+ hiring partners to get them jobs at A-list companies.” It is slated as your best course for career transformation. The company boats 9,000+ hires, as it states that they are the leader in placing their grads into high-growth, and high-pay tech jobs. Yes, this is all accomplished within 12 weeks. I’m sure you’re asking, “Are these jobs guaranteed?” Of course not, but the company is quite confident. Continue reading as to “why?” after this quick infographic below illustrating what you can expect from this program.

Im currently entering into my 5th week of this program. On our first day, a General Assembly employee bursts in our classroom, after getting another graduate hired, and asked, “Did you guys here about our last cohort?”, which had ended a couple of months prior. We had no clue what she was referring to but then she claims that their last cohort had a 93%+ hire rate. Impressive right. Thats a way to bring some motivation if you had any doubts before. Who knows if this was the truth, but they were all very excited and I have personally heard from some earlier attendees about the jobs that they received after the course and some even during the last week or 2 of the course ending. Before this starts sounding like a fantasy world where you can spend the 3 months and someone else can spend 4-5 years getting a computer science degree and you both end up with the same job (very possible), I’m going to break things down a bit.

Tuition Options?

First, starting with cost, I feel that the tuition share agreement is the best payment option and allows many people who can’t afford it to have a chance at something that can be life changing. It is not yet available in all states, but it’s a great option if you are not trying to pay $14k(approximate tuition cost) out of pocket and upfront(or in a few payments). Focusing on the $0 upfront income share agreement, it is structured very fair in my opinion. You are only required to pay an upfront $250 deposit until you land a software engineering job (ex: web development, full stack, etc) and depending on your location, entry level is probably hovering around $60k and above.

So if you don’t land a job, you are not at the hands of a huge loan that you cannot afford and most importantly, you’re not out of $14k+ that many pay to take the program. If you have additional experience in UX/UI design, and/or other skills for that matter, your pay can be a lot higher.

Income Share Agreement?

As far as General Assembly not offering the income share agreement not being offered in all states, specifically New York at the moment, I believe that it has to do with the amount of jobs being offered and the amount that are vacant. Here in the Greater Atlanta Area, the tech scene is taking on massive growth along with an abundant amount tech jobs that have yet to be filled. Whether it’s startups, fintech companies, or larger corporations, there is a massive demand for tech jobs in many industries here. I’m not sure of the availability in other cities and states in respective to the amount of tech workers seeking employment.

Adding to the tuition share agreement option, applicants are also subject to a more strict batch of pre course work, along with an evaluation to see if you are prepared and can be successful at this program. My pre course work (estimated to take 40 hours if you have prior knowledge) took me at least 60+ hours, and thats literally. Going through the pre course work, I decided to take notes and continue to reference them even when the program started so that I could truly retain the information, just as I would with another language until I could demonstrate it effortlessly.

Negatives?

The only negative to this income share agreement is that the total amount paid for the course increases to approximately $20,000, instead of the $14,000 that you could sign up for up front after getting accepted. Although this $20,000 will be paid for over a multiple of years (small monthly payments ranging from $300-$800 per month), depending on how much income you are making per year with the lower end being around the $50k end and the upper being $100k+ end.

That is where the trade off comes in, as you decide whether you would want to pay $14k up front or $20k over a multiple of 3-5 years. Simply put, both options come with what some will see as a hefty price but when compared to the average college tuition for 3-5 years, it is significantly less. So is it worth it? My simple answer: Yes, but its not for everyone and also depends on how much time you willing to dedicate!

What does it take?

Personally, as I’m approaching week 5 in the 12 week program, I would say that it is well worth it. This may not be the same for everyone else. There are so many factors that go into this decision and realizing if it is worth it for you or not. First off, the program is 12 weeks long and runs on a very strict schedule, from Monday – Friday (9am-5pm). All of my cohort(class) had to quit their jobs, and/or whatever else they were doing including school, etc. This IS NOT just a 9-5 job for three months. Ample time is required outside of class for this program to be worth it. You get what you give. Currently, it is very normal for me and my “codemates” to spend another 20-40+hours outside of class per week, on top of our current 9-5 days.

Being Prepared?

Handling this amount of work in such a short period of time is life changing mentally, physically, socially, and financially of course. Savings is required as it’s almost impossible to take on a full time job during this time. Knowing how to handle stress and pressure is also very important, as there will be a lot of ups and downs during the course. Another importance is your family and support. Your time will be very limited during this time, so just be prepared to be a bit disconnected during this time.

For me, personally, I had no real coding experience before starting the pre work for this program, but doing a lot of studying in the year prior to signing up for the program certainly helped with knowing different technologies and frameworks, and what they were used for. Regardless, free time gets pretty scarce during this time of development. It is extremely tough to stay consistent with a certain level of focus each and every day in this program, as it’s basically like learning a new language. So, being prepared is very critical.

The Daily Grind?

Each and every day has a structured schedule that we are given at the beginning of the cohort. The days normally start with lecture, or a quick meeting if it’s project week. Throughout the day, we go through enormous amounts of material, but it’s never just a lecture. Practice, practice, and more practice! Daily learning on how to structure, develop, and implement responsive webpages and applications from the ground up. This is where General Assembly separates itself from just trying to read and learn to code online, or even while pursuing a 4 year computer science degree while spending meaningless time on classes and material that you don’t need or ever use again.

As the saying goes, if you want to learn Chinese, the fastest way is to get dropped directly into the middle of China! This is the exact same. You’re being thrown right into the programming fire everyday, but in a good way. All of the new information learned is always directly followed by practice, as you jump right into the CLI(command line interface) and your IDE(integrated development environment). HTML, and CSS fly by within the first couple of days and then you will be jumping directly into Javascript. After that, you are off and running, and thats when the real challenge starts and the bulk of the course begins.

Is It Really Worth It?

All in all, I think it is definitely worth it if you have a passion to work in tech, whether to create your dream company or to work for another. This is the case, but this immersive program is not something that you spend a little time on and make it into a small side gig. If that’s what you’re looking for, then programming may not be ideal for you. It takes intense focus and dedication to be successful in the field. One mistake can crash an entire program, or maybe even delete an entire database and cause the company to crash. What if someone deleted the entire database of Uber drivers because they told the computer an incorrect command? Of course this would not happen, as their infrastructure has too much sophistication for that to happen, but the company would literally be out of operations for who knows how long and this would cause the end of one of the biggest companies that the world has ever seen.

If you’re not passionate about it, and that goes for anything in life, then you shouldn’t waste your time and/or money. It is also only worth it if you have time. This point needs to be emphasized. For example: If you have a family and can’t afford to quit your full time job, this is not a good idea. I’ve found that many who go through these programs don’t have many responsibilities at the moment, or they have wonderful supporters around them who help them throughout the duration. The immersive is very time consuming, and some may find it easier than others, but the amount of time that has to be put in is undeniable.

In a quick rundown, within 5 weeks, I have learned HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery, started creating our own servers, learning node, express, mongoDB, certain data structures and science, and so much more underlying information. This is not everything, and has taken massive work outside of class along with in class work and lecture. Just 5 weeks ago, I wouldn’t even know where to start.

Why Would You Put Yourself Through Such a Daunting Task?

For me, taking this leap was about being creative and bringing my ideas to life, as I push to provide immense value to this world for decades to come. My friends have always told me that I have all of the ideas, but to me they meant nothing if I could never bring them to life. I avoided obtaining these skills for the simple reason of believing that they were too time consuming, or that it was too old to start now, or simply because of me believing that I didn’t belong in that time of environment (the common imposture syndrome). Whether you’re a cook, waitress, sales associate, truck driver, garbage truck operator or whatever it may be, you can be successful not only in this program, but in this career field as a whole.

All of these technologies are fairly new, relative to our society, and if you spend 10+ hours a day on something while someone else maybe spends a hour every few days, you will be amazed at how far you can go. If you are thinking of a career change, or simply love the tech field and need this sort of structure to learn, I will highly advise taking General Assembly’s Software Engineering Immersive if time and your situation persists. You will also hear the phrases “Web Developer”, “Full Stack Developer”, etc associated with software engineering as a lot of the knowledge intertwines.

Step out, make connections, and build up your network. An Angel Investor looks for a dynamic company that can make him/her money, instead of a company that just takes his/her capital and flies with it.

The Modern Way It should be of no surprise that in 2020, in the age of smartphones, where you can find anything and anyone online, you can find Angel Investors online too.

Angel Investors can be reached out solo on business platforms like LinkedIn as well, but contacting them on websites made specifically for angel investing is easier and more reliable as most Angel Investors like to work around their own network.
