In LOVE with how you write Clark. Like, yeah this is totally the Clark Kent I imagine in my head.
I've got this request. Reader is a journalist at the Planet and he has one sided beef with Clark because he thinks this dude from Smallville looks down on him (literally and figuratively cause hes shorter lol) but the truth is reader is totally down bad for Clark and he's just in denial.
And what angers reader the most is that Clark meets his hostility with patience and kindness, which must be fake and he must be secretly laughing and making fun of him.
(He's not. Clark is also just as down bad for him but reader can't clock that shit because he's emotionally constipated😭)
(This is my first fic request ever, kinda nervous lol)
Not So One-sided
Clark Kent x Male Reader
Summary: Your one-sided rivalry with Clark Kent at The Daily Planet was a constant source of frustration; he just smiled at all your snide remarks. You insisted you hated him, but Clark, on the other hand, was completely and utterly in love with you.
A/N: I'm glad that someone likes how i write Clark, I'm mainly basing him off the more cheerful side that I grew up with comic wise and also James Gunn's version. Hoping this meets expectations, especially since it's your first request.
TW: Fluff - Rivals to Lovers (kinda)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clark Kent. The name alone was enough to make your teeth clench. You’d crowned him your self-proclaimed work rival, a title he was blissfully, perhaps even infuriatingly, unaware of. In reality, your rivalry was as one-sided as Lex Luthor’s obsessive vendetta against Superman – a fervent, all-consuming focus on your part, met with… well, almost nothing on his. You’d meticulously constructed this elaborate facade of animosity, convincing yourself that your intense dislike stemmed from his supposed condescension, a perpetual sense of him looking down on you. It couldn't possibly be, you rationalized, simply because he physically towered over you, his height a constant, undeniable reminder of his presence.
Every time your byline graced the Daily Planet’s front page, accompanied by your impactful photographs, Clark would inevitably offer what felt like a backhanded compliment. A subtle smile would play on his lips, his blue eyes crinkling at the corners, even when you delivered a pointed jab his way, laced with all the thinly veiled hostility you could muster. He met every snide remark, every sarcastic retort, every overt attempt to provoke a reaction, with an almost preternatural kindness and an unwavering patience that drove you absolutely insane. It was enough to make you want to pull your own hair out in sheer frustration, because deep down, in the furthest reaches of your stubbornly guarded heart, the truth was far more complicated: you desperately wanted to hate Clark, but you couldn't. Because you liked him.
You liked that infuriatingly charming, stupid smile that seemed to effortlessly disarm your defenses. You liked those big, blue eyes that held an unsettling depth and seemed to genuinely see you, even when you were at your most prickly. You liked the way his dark curls perpetually fell across his forehead, a constant, endearing disarray. And God, did you like his voice – a low, steady rumble that somehow managed to soothe the jagged edges of your manufactured resentment. You, in your magnificent state of emotional unawareness, were utterly blind to the fact that Clark harbored similar feelings for you. You, the self-proclaimed idiot, were too dense to recognize the way his gaze lingered on you, the quiet admiration in his expression that mirrored your own secret affections.
The late hour had long since passed any reasonable quitting time, yet here you were, still hunched over your desk. The only illumination came from the soft glow of your desk lamp, casting long shadows across the stack of freshly developed photographs of Superman from a few days prior. You’d watched almost everyone else from the newsroom pack up their bags and head out, the clatter of keyboards and the murmur of conversations gradually fading into a profound silence. Except for Clark. Of course, Clark was still here. He claimed to be diligently working on a new article, his head bent over his own desk a few rows away. But your mind, ever the conspirator against your own peace, kept whispering a different narrative: he was still here to watch you. To look down on you. Just like he always did.
You sighed, running a hand through your hair. The silence of the newsroom was getting to you, amplifying the frantic whispers of your own mind. You tried to focus on the intricate details of Superman's suit in your photographs, on the way the light caught his cape, but your eyes kept darting to the periphery. And there he was, just as your paranoia had predicted. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Clark Kent. His head was no longer bent over his desk; instead, his gaze was fixed on you.
A knot tightened in your stomach. This was it. He was going to say something, offer another one of his infuriatingly backhanded compliments, or worse, comment on your late hours, implying you weren't efficient enough to finish your work on time. Your jaw tensed. You weren't going to let him get the upper hand. Not tonight.
Before he could even open his mouth, before that perpetually kind, yet somehow infuriating, smile could grace his lips, you snapped, your voice cutting through the quiet. "Still here, Kent? Thought you'd be tucked into bed by now, dreaming of Pulitzer Prizes and farming conventions." You didn't even look up, feigning intense concentration on your photos, but you could feel his eyes on you, unwavering. You waited, a coil of tension in your shoulders, for his inevitable, saccharine response.
A beat of silence hung in the air, a silence so profound it felt louder than any noise. You braced yourself, every fiber of your being preparing for the usual placid response, the easy dismissal, the unwavering kindness that always chafed at your carefully constructed hostility.
Then, a soft chuckle. It wasn't the boisterous laugh you'd sometimes hear from the sports desk, nor the sardonic snort from the hardened investigative reporters. It was a low, warm sound that seemed to hum through the quiet office, raising the fine hairs on your arms.
"Something like that," Clark's voice drifted over, surprisingly close, making you jump slightly. You hadn't heard him move. You risked a quick glance up, and there he was, standing beside your desk, a gentle smile playing on his lips. He wasn't leaning over you, or looking down in the way you always imagined. Instead, he was standing slightly to the side, his posture open, one hand casually tucked into his pocket. Those big blue eyes, the ones you secretly adored, were crinkling at the corners, not with pity or condescension, but with something akin to amusement and… warmth?
He gestured vaguely at your desk, his gaze sweeping over the scattered photographs of Superman. "Still perfecting your art, I see. You really do have a knack for capturing the Man of Steel in action. These shots from the docks are particularly dynamic." His voice was genuine, devoid of any of the passive-aggression you habitually read into his words.
Your prepared retort, sharp and biting, withered on your tongue. You felt a blush creep up your neck, a traitorous heat that threatened to betray your carefully maintained composure. He wasn't taunting you. He was… complimenting you. Sincerely. It was disorienting, like walking into a familiar room only to find the furniture rearranged.
You cleared your throat, trying to regain your footing. "Just doing my job, Kent. Unlike some people who seem to think they're on a perpetual coffee break." The words felt weak, even to your own ears, stripped of their intended venom by his unexpected sincerity.
Clark's smile softened further, a hint of something unreadable in his eyes. "Well, your 'job' always manages to make the front page, doesn't it?" He paused, then added, almost as an afterthought, "And for the record, I was just finishing up a lead for the Metropolis homelessness piece. It's a bit heavier than a coffee break, I assure you."
He wasn't looking down on you. He was just... Clark. And in that moment, under the quiet hum of the fluorescent lights, the carefully constructed wall you'd built around yourself seemed to wobble, just a little.
"Then why, Clark? Why do you do this every single time?" Your voice rose, cracking slightly as the carefully constructed dam of your irritation finally burst. You stomped a foot, the sound echoing in the suddenly too-quiet newsroom. You were practically vibrating with a mixture of frustration, confusion, and a burgeoning, terrifying realization. You jabbed a finger, hard, at his chest, your index finger thudding against the soft fabric of his shirt, right over his heart.
"Every. Single. Time!" you repeated, your voice climbing higher, a frantic, desperate edge to it. "I make a jab, a remark, something deliberately mean, and you just… smile! You just stand there, with that stupid, infuriatingly kind smile, and you act like I'm not actively trying to be the biggest jerk on the planet to you!" Your arm was still outstretched, your finger still pressing into him, but he didn't flinch. He didn't even stiffen. His big blue eyes remained soft, his smile unwavering, a serene, almost maddeningly patient expression on his face.
You started pacing in a tight circle in front of him, your hands gesticulating wildly. "Do you have any idea how maddening that is, Kent? Do you know what it’s like to try and genuinely despise someone, to work up a good, solid, healthy hatred, and they just… absorb it? Like some kind of emotional sponge? It's not normal! People are supposed to get angry! They're supposed to get defensive! They're supposed to yell back! But not you! Oh no, not Clark Kent!" You threw your hands up in exasperation, then let them fall with a smack against your thighs. "It’s like you want to drive me insane! Is that it? Is this some kind of twisted game? Are you trying to prove you're some kind of saint, a paragon of patience?"
You stopped abruptly, panting slightly, your chest heaving from the unexpected outburst. Your eyes were wide, probably a little wild, and for the first time in your life, you felt completely exposed, utterly stripped bare in front of him. You waited for him to finally snap, to yell, to show any sign of anger.
But he didn't. That infuriatingly gentle smile remained fixed, those kind eyes still twinkling. After a moment of pure silence, a silence filled only with the frantic beating of your own heart, Clark spoke, his voice calm, even, as if you hadn't just had a complete meltdown.
"Are you free for dinner tomorrow night?" he asked, his voice soft, almost conversational.
Your brain, already short-circuiting from the emotional overload, ground to a complete halt. Dinner? Tomorrow? With him? Your mouth opened and closed uselessly, like a fish out of water. "I… uh… what?" you managed, a pathetic stutter escaping your lips. Your cheeks flushed a furious red. How were you even supposed to respond to that? To this? After all that?
Clark seemed to finally register the utter shock on your face, the way your body had stiffened, your eyes wide with disbelief. His smile softened further, if that were even possible, and he quickly added, "Oh! I didn't mean anything other than, you know, as friends? Getting something to eat. To catch up. We rarely get to, with our schedules."
Friends? The word hit you like a physical blow, simultaneously ridiculous and devastating. Friends? After you'd just spent the last five minutes having a public, one-sided argument, after months of snide remarks and thinly veiled antagonism, he thought you were friends? This man, who met every insult with kindness, every jab with patience, every attempt at hostility with unwavering warmth, actually considered you a friend?
It was too much. That smile, so genuine, so open, was too much. His unwavering patience was too much. Everything about Clark Kent, in that moment, was simply too much to handle. Your mind screamed at you to say no, to maintain the facade, to retreat into your usual prickly shell. But the words, unbidden, were already tumbling out.
"Yeah," you blurted, the word escaping before you could even process it, before you could put up any resistance. "Yeah, I'd like that."
The small Italian restaurant Clark had chosen was exactly the kind of place you’d never step foot in normally. Tucked away on a quiet side street in Metropolis, its red-and-white checkered tablecloths and the warm, garlic-infused aroma seemed to hum with an intimate, unpretentious charm. Clark had sworn it had some of the best lasagna in the city, a bold claim you privately scoffed at.
The first twenty minutes were a study in excruciating awkwardness. You’d arrived a few minutes early, then instantly regretted it. Clark was already there, perched at a small, round table in the corner, looking impossibly relaxed in a simple button-down shirt that somehow still managed to emphasize his broad shoulders. He’d smiled that soft, genuine smile as you approached, and you’d barely managed a mumbled greeting before slipping into the opposite seat, clutching the menu like a lifeline.
You avoided his gaze with a fervor that bordered on athletic. Your eyes meticulously scanned the faded print of the menu, then drifted to the chipped paint on the wall, then fixated on a particularly stubborn stain on the tablecloth. Anything to avoid meeting those too-blue eyes. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, punctuated only by the clinking of silverware from other tables and the distant murmur of conversation. You could feel the warmth of his presence across the small table, a palpable weight that made your palms subtly sweat. Every fiber of your being screamed at you to make a sarcastic remark, to break the tension with a jab, but the memory of your meltdown in the newsroom, and your utterly baffling agreement to this dinner, kept your mouth clamped shut.
It wasn't until the waiter, a cheerful man with a magnificent mustache, finally placed two steaming plates of lasagna in front of you that Clark broke the silence. The rich, savory scent instantly filled the space between you, a welcome distraction. You picked up your fork, determined to focus on the food, when Clark’s voice, quiet but clear, cut through the aroma.
"Do you really hate me?"
Your fork, halfway to your mouth, froze. The simple, direct question hit you like a sucker punch. You slowly lowered the fork, your gaze still fixed on your plate. Your heart hammered against your ribs. This was it. The moment of reckoning. You’d expected some witty banter, some lighthearted chat about work, anything but this blunt, disarming inquiry.
"Or," he continued, his voice softer now, almost hesitant, "is there... something else going on?"
You finally, reluctantly, lifted your head. His big blue eyes were fixed on you, unblinking, serious, devoid of the usual amusement or kindness you usually associated with them. They held a genuine curiosity, a quiet question that demanded an honest answer. The heat in your cheeks flared, and you found yourself completely speechless, trapped in the uncomfortable truth that was suddenly laid bare between you.
You swallowed hard, the lasagna suddenly feeling like a lump in your throat. This was the moment you'd dreaded, the conversation you'd actively avoided for months, years even. To admit the truth, the raw, inconvenient truth, felt like stripping off your skin in the middle of a crowded room.
"What do you mean, 'something else'?" you finally managed to rasp, your voice barely a whisper. You tried to sound indignant, but it came out more like a plea. Your eyes darted around, anywhere but at him, but his unwavering gaze pulled you back like a magnet.
Clark put his fork down, his movements slow and deliberate. He leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms on the table. "You go out of your way to be… well, to be difficult. To be mean, even," he said, surprisingly gently. There was no accusation in his tone, just a quiet observation. "But then you show up to this dinner, even after everything you said. And the way you threw your fit the other night… it didn't feel like hate. It felt like… something else. Like you were trying very hard to push me away, but for a reason I don't understand."
He paused, and for a terrifying moment, you thought he was going to articulate the very feelings you were desperately trying to bury. Instead, he simply looked at you, his big blue eyes still incredibly kind, but now tinged with a genuine curiosity that unnerved you more than any anger ever could. "So, is it hate? Or is there something else going on?"
The directness of his question, coupled with his absolute lack of judgment, chipped away at your defenses. You wanted to lie, to deny it all, to retreat into your usual sarcastic shell. But something in his gaze, a profound patience, made it impossible. The words felt foreign on your tongue, clumsy and exposed, but once they started, they tumbled out in a rush.
"It's not hate," you blurted, the admission tearing through the carefully constructed walls you'd maintained for so long. Your voice was barely audible. You felt a hot flush creep up your neck, knowing your face was probably scarlet. You picked at a loose thread on the tablecloth, unable to look at him.
"I... I don't know what it is," you continued, the words a jumbled mess of half-formed thoughts and raw emotion. "I just... you're always so... good. So nice. And I don't understand it. Everyone else, they get annoyed, they get angry. But you just... smile. And it makes me feel like an idiot for even trying to get a reaction out of you. It makes me feel... small. Like I'm just a kid throwing a tantrum and you're the grown-up who just lets it wash over them." You finally dared a quick glance at him. His smile was still there, a soft, understanding curve of his lips, and it somehow made it even harder to confess.
"And," you whispered, the last part of the confession almost swallowed by the ambient restaurant noise, "and it's easier to pretend to hate you than to admit... to admit that I actually..." You trailed off, unable to voice the unspoken word, the true reason for your elaborate charade. It hung in the air between you, a fragile, unspoken truth.
Clark didn't say anything immediately, letting your hesitant confession hang in the air between the checkered tablecloths and the scent of marinara. You braced yourself for a patronizing nod, a gentle pat on the hand, anything that would confirm your deepest fear: that he saw you as a fragile, overly emotional mess. But he just watched you, his big blue eyes still incredibly gentle, yet now, a new light seemed to spark within them – recognition, perhaps even understanding.
Then, a soft, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips, different from his usual polite or amused one. This one was intimate, a private acknowledgment. "You actually..." he started, his voice a low rumble, completing your unspoken thought. He didn't mock, didn't gloat. He simply... accepted it. And in that acceptance, the immense, crushing weight you hadn't even realized you were carrying began to lift.
"It's funny," Clark continued, his gaze drifting thoughtfully towards the flickering candle on the table. "Because I always wondered why you went to such lengths. Most people, if they dislike someone, they just avoid them. But you... you always seemed to seek me out, just to tell me how much you didn't like me. It was confusing, and honestly, a little charming." He chuckled softly, a warm, genuine sound that resonated deeply within you.
He met your gaze again, and this time, the warmth in his eyes was unmistakable, a direct reflection of the warmth blooming in your own chest. "And for the record," he said, his voice dropping to a near whisper, "I always liked that fire. That passion. Even when it was directed at me." A faint blush, the barest hint of pink, dusted his cheeks. "And I... I never thought of you as an idiot. Or small. Just... a little misguided."
You stared at him, your mind reeling. He liked your "fire"? He found your antics "charming"? This was so far beyond anything you had ever anticipated, so completely out of the realm of your meticulously crafted reality, that you could only gape. The words you wanted to say, the questions that flooded your mind, got tangled in your throat.
Clark reached across the table, his fingers gently covering your hand, which was still resting limply on the tablecloth. His touch was warm, reassuring, and sent a jolt through you that had nothing to do with surprise and everything to do with a quiet, undeniable longing. His thumb gently stroked the back of your hand.
"So," he said, his smile widening, his eyes twinkling playfully, "now that we've cleared the air... are we still going to pretend you hate me, or can we just enjoy this lasagna?"
You felt a laugh bubble up, surprised and breathless, a genuine laugh that felt entirely new. It wasn't the bitter, sarcastic laugh you usually employed, but a light, unburdened sound. You looked at his hand on yours, then up into his kind, knowing eyes, and for the first time, you felt truly seen, truly understood.
"I think," you managed, your voice still a little shaky but filled with a new lightness, "I think I can manage to enjoy the lasagna, Kent."
The shared smile that followed, unburdened by pretense or rivalry, felt like the real beginning of something.
The rest of the dinner unfolded with a surprising ease that neither of you had anticipated. The initial awkwardness melted away like butter on a hot plate of that delicious lasagna. You talked about work, not with the usual undercurrent of rivalry, but with a genuine exchange of ideas and insights. You learned about Clark's struggles with a particularly stubborn source for his homelessness article, and he listened intently as you animatedly described the challenges of getting the perfect action shot of Superman without getting trampled.
His questions were insightful, his comments genuinely appreciative of your skills, and you found yourself laughing more freely than you had in ages. It wasn't the forced, cynical laugh you often employed, but a genuine, unburdened sound. You even caught yourself marveling at the way his dark curls fell across his forehead when he leaned in to hear you better over the restaurant's gentle hum, or the crinkling at the corners of his big blue eyes when he smiled at something you said.
By the time the dessert arrived – a shared tiramisu that was surprisingly light and creamy – the conversation had drifted from work to more personal anecdotes. He told you about growing up on a farm, a life so different from your own urban upbringing that it fascinated you. You, in turn, found yourself sharing stories about your early days as a photographer, the struggles and the triumphs you rarely spoke of to anyone. There was a comfortable rhythm to your conversation, a natural back-and-forth that felt as effortless as breathing.
A Quiet Walk Home
As you stepped out of the warm restaurant into the cool Metropolis night, the city lights shimmered like scattered diamonds. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of exhaust fumes mixed with something indefinable, uniquely urban. Clark didn't immediately call for a cab; instead, he simply started walking, a silent invitation you surprisingly accepted.
The walk was punctuated by comfortable silences, punctuated by soft murmurs and shared observations about the city around you. You found yourself walking closer to him than you ever would have dared before, your shoulders occasionally brushing. It was a subtle contact, barely there, yet it sent a quiet thrill through you.
When you finally reached your apartment building, the towering structure seemed to loom even larger against the night sky. You stopped at the entrance, turning to face him. The streetlight above cast a soft glow, illuminating the easy smile on his face.
"I... I actually had a really good time, Clark," you admitted, the words feeling foreign yet wonderfully true on your tongue. The residual heat from your blush still lingered on your cheeks.
His smile softened, and he took a small step closer. "Me too," he said, his voice a low, warm tone that wrapped around you like a comforting blanket. His gaze was steady, unwavering, and full of that quiet understanding that had disarmed you at dinner. "More than a good time, actually."
He reached out, and for a fleeting moment, you thought he might touch your face, or perhaps even take your hand again. Instead, his fingers gently brushed against your arm, a light, almost hesitant touch. "Thank you for coming," he murmured.
You found yourself wanting to prolong the moment, to find an excuse to stay there under the streetlight with him just a little longer. But the night was drawing to a close, and a new kind of nervousness, entirely separate from your usual prickly demeanor, began to flutter in your chest.
"Goodnight, Clark," you said softly, your voice a little breathy.
"Goodnight," he replied, his smile still warm. He lingered for another moment, his big blue eyes holding yours in a gaze that seemed to convey so much more than just a simple farewell.
As you turned and walked into the lobby, you resisted the urge to look back. But you could feel his presence, a lingering warmth in the cool night air, long after the heavy glass doors swung shut behind you. The elevator ride up felt too fast, the silence of your apartment too loud. You walked over to the window, pulling back the curtain just enough to peek out. Clark was still there, standing on the sidewalk below, looking up at your building. Even from this distance, you could sense his smile, a silent promise hanging in the Metropolis night.
You let the curtain fall, a genuine, unbidden smile gracing your own lips. The rivalry was dead. And something entirely new, something thrilling and terrifying and wonderfully hopeful, had just begun.

WANTED
Looking for reputable lobotomists so i can actually work on my wips and not get distracted with stuff like this! Someone drill a hole in my skull so i can get some breathing room here! Or a manager!
Anyway i was pulling up my computer and my eye caught the small loz decal and my brain assaulted me with Gravity falls loz crossover because i get NO PEACE around here.
Bills Ganondorf for obvious reasons, holding the triforce of power.
Fiddleford's Princess Zelda, has the tirforce of wisdom.
And Fords Link! He wields the triforce of courage! He's here to be a hero and save the day!
Much like loz botw Ford got discovered early as the wielder of the triforce. He's thrust into lessons, and although he can wield a sword his actual talent comes from the arcane, learning spells. Which would be great! Except the Master sword is a sword, he needs to know how to use it? Whatever, they're in a time of peace, they might not even need the hero! And Prince Fiddleford can't really wield the triforce of wisdom effectively either, they'll learn together as they grow!
Enter Bill, the palaces newest advisor and reincarnation of evil. No one knows he has the triforce of power or plans to overthrow the kingdom with an army of monsters. Prince Fiddleford is suspicious of him but not for any tangible reason he can use to get him kicked out, and his paranoid and fearful nature makes everyone roll their eyes and dismiss his worries. Meanwhile Ford's absolutely charmed by the one adult who doesn't push for Ford to learn how to wield a sword and encourages his scientific curiosity. Bill covers for him so he can go run off in the woods and study creatures, says his swordsmanship is already decent enough, and they get along so well! Bill and the prince are Fords very good friends in the castle and its a time of peace and lifes good!
Then Bill strikes. He's finally, finally gotten to a point in the cycle of reincarnation where he can take out the prince and hero in one swoop. Prince Fiddleford is locked away and the hero is chained in the castle basement, there's no one who can stop Bill now! He's finally spit in the goddesses eyes and won! The ultimate demon king right here!
Except Stan is also still here.
Stan is Fords near identical twin brother, the one that some people wished was the hero except his personality is.. hmm. Their entire life everyone's moaned that maybe Ford inherited the heros spirit but Stan took the hero's skill. He's great with a sword, strong, but not willing to stick his neck out for others and has criminal tendencies he can't hide as well as Ford (and are generally more malicious. Fords mischievous in his own right but likes to appear to be law abiding). They were really close when they were younger but over the years everyone comparing them to each other drove a wedge between them, Ford hating that Stan's the better swordsman and Stan hating that everyone puts him down as the dumb twin who must have stolen Fords talent in the womb. Gets worse as they grew older and Ford finally started bulking up, slowly reaching then surpassing Stan's skill. Now Stan really is the extra twin here, unwanted and unneeded. Fords living it up in the castle and no one even realizes Stan's left to wander around the kingdom and try to find purpose in life as the hero's brother. Can't get a job because people keep going 'oh the hero! no wait, its you :/' and he hates it. Secludes himself in the woods and hangs out with the fairies and gets mopey that no one even tried to look for him (Ford noticed Stan left, but at that point their relationship was so strained he figured Stan was finally off to start his criminal life and drag Fords reputation through the mud. Which he sort of did but mostly on accident).
Bill is only sort of aware Stan exists but has no interest in him as he's not a person of prophecy. Does nothing to stop him when Stan realizes whats happened and goes on an Epic Quest to save the kingdom (which is really an Epic Quest to save Ford and maybe rub it in his face, and the kingdom just so happens to be a byproduct of that). Stan's not the Hero, but through doing the Heros Quest sorta becomes one a la Windwaker. He goes to the temples, gets the different artifacts, and since he and Ford are identical rumors spread that Ford is out there, fighting off Bill and here to save the day!
Which leads to Bill checking up on Ford chained in the basement far too often to make sure he didn't somehow escape the last ten times he checked. Like thats Ford right there, chained up and growling, so who's this other guy slaughtering Bill's demon henchmen and gathering the power to end Bill? Not Stan, that guys not worth anything, so maybe... Fords ghost? Is he astral projecting through sheer rage or something, whats happening here?
Anyway Stan finally gets to the point where he can get through the forest and retrieve the Master Sword except, for all his heroic actions, he's still not the Hero. He can't pull the sword that seals the darkness, he can't use it to save Ford.
Fine. He'll just make a new sword. The.. SUPREME Master Sword (similar to ww phantom hourglass if i remember correctly) . Take that Goddesses! Stan's not gonna quit because a sword doesn't like him or something! New quest time! He's gonna travel to the most obscure cursed and abandoned places and get the rarest mystical materials to take down Bill and finally prove he's more than the spare hero. Now he just needs to find someone to put everything together to make the sword that mega seals the darkness.
Well, Prince Fiddleford is a known inventor and smart guy, Stan was raised with the skinny nerd and watched him bring all kinds of things to life. All Stan has to do is rescue him, shove the materials into his hands, and BAM! New super weapon created and he can go take on Bill and save Ford and everyone will finally start mistaking Ford for him! Hah!
Saves Fiddleford from wherever Bill had him locked up to find the Prince insane from repeatedly wiping his mind because he couldn't handle the Horrors. Alright. Alright! Whatever! Stan can handle this! He's already cleared a million temples and run around the kingdom so much he has every rock memorized! Whats one more epic quest to restore the prince's lost mind!
So he does that, and then there's a heartwarming moment where Fiddleford is finally sane, reaches out to thank Stan, and ruins the moment by calling him Ford. The punch to the face is very deserved, they both agree.
But now Fiddlefords back to himself and cant take all of Stan's pocket stuff and make cooler stuff out of it. Fiddleford agrees, because Stan did save his life and help return his sanity, but spends the whole time asking why Stan doesn't just go and rescue Ford directly so Ford can draw the Master Sword and take down Bill? Thats sorta his whole thing? Stan's stubborn though, and at this point he's spent too long doing all the heavy lifting he's not gonna let Ford steal the show. Stan's gonna save the day and then people will finally see him for himself (and Ford will say thank you, and they'll be brothers, fighting off the remaining demon hoard and doing cool combo moves and it'll be great).
Yada yada, stuff happens, Stan takes his new cool Supreme Master Sword (Its not called that Stanley! Its the Sword that Cuts the Darkness and there's downsides Stanley! Stanley stop running off and ignoring my warnings!(unsure what the swords actual name is here. Maybe the Champions Sword (reference boxer Stan)? The Chosen Sword (have to chose to weld it)? The Ultimate Sword (for ultimate sacrifice)? Who knows.) to the castle to confront Bill and save the day, rescue Ford, be a hero, not the spare!
Except Bill's not there, Ford is, Stan does rescue him, but Ford is not happy to see Stan. He's furious.
Going through the temples is Fords job. Saving the day and being theHhero is the reason he was born, and Stan going around doing it meant Bill was taking his anger out on Ford, rubbing in the fact that maybe they were wrong and Stan was the hero all along, huh! Turns out Fords not the hero, he's the guy who stole the triforce of courage in the womb! He's the spare!
Fords been hearing this on repeat for however long this has been happening. Storms off to do the actual heroes journey as the actual Hero and makes himself even more furious at all the completed temples and the fact he can't find the hidden passages and defeat the monsters because Stan's already done it. Gets his blessings or whatever, stomps over to the Deku tree, pulls the sword, and goes off to find Fiddleford so the two of them can complete the prophecy and save the day. Even angrier when he finds Fiddleford already rescued (Stan really is stealing his life here, and if he's not the hero than who is he? What was this all for?). But Fiddleford is happy to see him at least! His old friend, and together they can-
Ah. Fiddleford wants to go after Stanley. Cool. Cool. WHY!
Turns out Stans Super Mega Master Sword (which existence infuriates Ford further) is made of super rare materials and blessed by the goddesses. Its the Sword that can Cut through the Darkness, and as long as someone has the spirits blessings they can wield it. Good thing Stan got all that when he did all those temples huh? So whats the problem asks Ford?
The problem is that Stan is not a hero or someone protected by fate and reincarnation. He does not have any part of the triforce like WW Link. He's impressed the goddesses and spirits with his tenacity and ability to do what only the hero should do, but is still not the Hero, and if he uses that sword to take down Bill its a literal double edged sword. He'll slay the darkness and take himself out with it. Probably. Fiddlefords a little unsure on the details because he was possessed a little when he made it but something bad will happen for sure.
Well Fords angry at Stan but not so angry he wants his brother to kill himself doing Fords job. Its a rush to track them both down and of course Ford and Fiddleford show up mid battle, both demon king and Stan looking rough but still in it to win.
Only part i'm unsure of is how it'd all end. Does Ford swoop in and deal the final blow? Sealing Bill and then turning to yell at Stan for ignoring warnings and almost killing himself? Does Fiddleford get in the final strike, preventing the brothers fighting from costing them the battle? Does Stan strike Bill down, and either dies with him, gets his mind wiped as the cost for finally defeating evil, become the new vessel for evil (cutting it out of Bill and it latching onto him?), maybe dies and becomes the sword spirit, maybe the price is Stan being unable to wield a sword again, maybe Stan disappears in a flash of light and now Ford has to save him? Endless possibilities, and in the end Stan was never the hero for the right reasons, and he wasn't the Hero but he was the hero who saved the kingdom.
Now i'm kicking this thing out so i can get some actual work done around here.

Water droplets paint the glass of the windows, the gloomy day outside perfectly adding to your exhaustion. After a considerate amount of time studying and an eight-hour late shift at the bar, your eyelids felt like lead, your head heavy and cloudy. The last place you want to be at eight in the morning is in this plain-walled building, surrounded by people you either didn’t know or didn’t care much about, listening to someone drone on and on about a topic that you’d just reteach yourself in your apartment later.
Don’t get it wrong, you didn’t hate college in a general aspect. For you, school has always been a place to thrive. Good grades seemed to come easy to you as long as you put in effort and taking notes was more of a hobby than a necessity. The only part you hated was the early wake-ups and the people you were forced to surround yourself with.
Your eight AM chemistry class was very high on your list of hated college classes. Too early in the morning, too bright of a classroom, too many students that were too chatty for any night owl. Worst of all, there was Steve Harrington.
You knew Steve solely by being in his orbit. Basketball player with a full-ride scholarship, a shiny BMW and rich parents. Perfect hair, perfect face, perfect clothes, perfect grades. It was alarming how well he managed to keep his almost-valedictorian (after you, of course) status despite his extremely active social life. No matter where you went, or how far you tried to stray from it, someone had something to say about him, whether it be actual fact, fawning or simple rumors.
Yeah, he hooked up with so-and-so at so-and-so’s party last week. I’m pretty sure she’s still waiting for a call back.
Did you see his ass in those shorts during his last game? Not as good as him in that one pair of jeans, but still phenomenal.
I’m pretty sure his parents own houses all throughout the country. A house for every seasonal vacation. Think he takes people there?
The existence of Steve was infuriating. Never had to work for anything, never seemed to try very hard, yet the two of you were constantly at each other’s necks when it came to best in their class. It didn’t help that the professor seemed to adore him, laughing at the small jokes he threw her way when he was leaving class and congratulating him on every single good grade he received. Her intense focus on Harrington had you wondering if she was a cougar looking for a young college boy to frolic alongside.
Steve sat in front of you in class, which you took as an opportunity to constantly lean over his shoulder to glance at his scores whenever he pulled them up on his laptop. Every time that his grade was higher than yours, you cursed. Every time you had gotten better grades than him, you celebrated. Sometimes, he even raised his computer, as if he had sensed the distaste radiating from you and wanted to rub it in your face.
Infuriating.
You were jolted back to reality by the sound of a clap, blinking your blurry eyes and glancing around in bewilderment. As soon as the professor waved her hands and dismissed the class, you stood out of your seat, shoving your notebook into your backpack and throwing it quickly over your shoulder. To keep your time in this classroom as brief as possible, you had claimed the seat closest to the door, ensuring the quickest exit and not getting stuck behind a crowd of young adults clogging up the thin aisle between the rows of seats.
You can practically taste freedom when you’re suddenly stopped by a hand on the crook of your elbow and the sound of your name, turning around so fast you swore you heard a muscle in your neck snap.
“Hello.” Steve greets the minute you glance at him, leaning his shoulder against the doorway of the classroom. He’s effectively blocking one of the two doors that were open for the students to leave, although he doesn’t seem to mind, all of his focus on you. He doesn’t say anything else other than the greeting, a stupid grin on his face and a strand of perfect hair falling over his forehead.
Brow furrowing and lips pursing in annoyance, you cross your arms over your chest, watching his puppy eyes flicker down to them before he glances back at your face. “What do you want, Harrington?”
With a dramatic mix between a sigh and a groan and one step back, he raises a hand to run it through his hair, pushing it back and doing nothing to tame the stubborn stray lock. “Hello, yes, I am having a good day, thank you.”
“That’s not what I asked,” you deadpan. It’s too early in the morning to play games, especially with the late shift you had worked the night before, leaving irritation to prickle at your skin and your eyes to stay half-lidded as they stopped him with a harsh glare.
He lets out a soft hmph of discontent, obviously having expected this conversation to have gone a totally different way. He stares at you silently until you give up, turning around and walking away from him without a goodbye.
Unfortunately, Steve doesn’t give up. He's on your heels as soon as you move, the front of his shoulder brushing against the back of yours as he walks alongside you, skillfully dodging everyone that was on the other side of him. “Okay, okay. Here’s the deal.”
His fingers brush against your bicep in another attempt to stop you from moving, guiding you into a much-emptier hallway and standing in front of you. “I need help.”
“I’m not a therapist,” you quip.
“Be nice,” he whines.
“No. Continue before I walk away.”
“Okay,” he groans again. You mentally note to insult him for sounding like a zombie and a petulant child. “I need a tutor.”
Right as your mouth opens to shoot another sarcastic comment his way, he’s speaking again – quickly, as if he’s afraid a single bout of silence will send you running. “We both know that you and I are in the running for valedictorian. I have no intent of taking that from you. Maybe.” In what he means to be charming, he winks before continuing. “But the only class I can’t seem to fully grasp is chemistry. I’m assuming that someone as smart as you is doing amazing in that class. Which means I want you to tutor me.”
“You don’t get everything you want, Harrington,” you remind him chidingly, leaning to press your back against the wall behind you. Your feet ache way too much to stand straight any longer. “I’m too busy to worry about your grades alongside mine. Some of us have things to do other than party. There’s over a handful of people who’d be willing to tutor you and one of them is not me.”
Steve’s brow furrows, evidence of his disappointment written all over his face, eyes softening in a pout. “C’mon. I don’t want anybody else to tutor me.” It’s his turn to cross his arms over his chest, jean-clad hip pushing out into what he thinks is a defiant stance. “What’s your price?”
That pulls a bark of a laugh out of your lips, head shaking. “Nothing.”
“You’ll do it?” He perks up foolishly, arms falling to his side.
“No.” You swear you can hear his hope shatter. Good.
There’s a soft slap as one hand perches on his hip, the other rubbing at his face. “You are so goddamn stubborn.” It comes out as a growl of annoyance, although when his eyes find you, his gaze isn’t anything but pleading. “Please. I’ll pay you. Fifty an hour.”
“I could make more than that standing on a corner,” you deadpan. Fifty an hour overall does sound tempting, especially since that’d allow you to lower your amount of shifts at the bar and maybe actually give you a day off, but he can’t know that. It’s insufferable Steve Harrington staring down at you, only a few inches taller than you are and yet attempting to loom.
Another sound of pique grumbled in his throat. “A hundred.”
Now, you’re just messing with him, raising your hand to flex your finger and point at the sky, asking for more. You don’t expect anyone to want to pay more than a hundred dollars an hour for tutoring, especially for something as simple as chemistry and not as intense as the SAT. But Steve isn’t just anyone and it’s obvious that he’s desperate.
“Fine. Three hundred. But I’m not going above that.” Steve’s arms cross over his chest again, a divet forming on his forearms as he clenches in fingers in slight annoyance, brown eyes glaring. “At that point, I can pay someone to take all my tests for me.”
You don’t even attempt to make fun of him, or to spit back a snide comment. Your lips are parted in shock at the idea of someone having so much money that they could spend that much money on tutoring. He catches your shock, a radiant smile pulling on his lips as he reaches into his back pocket.
Quickly, Steve steps forward, sliding a piece of paper between the cover and first page of the notebook in your arms. “My number’s there. Text me and we can choose a time and place, yeah?” With a wink that makes you want to rip his eye out and a very dramatic spin, he slides out of the hallway he had pulled you in, disappearing into the sea of students.
You don’t text Steve.
Surprisingly, it’s not because you don’t want to. After weighing your intense dislike for Steve against the amount of money he was offering, you wouldn’t be able to say no to his offer without feeling the hole in your pocket burn just a bit brighter and bigger. You had kept telling yourself that as soon as you had a free moment, you should text him, nonchalant and easy, telling him to meet you in the library at some point.
But you never had a free moment.
Between attending classes, homework, studying and picking up shifts at the bar, the only breaks you had were to shovel food into your mouth just to keep you alive or to sleep like the dead for a couple of hours before you did it all over again. One day turned into two, then three, until you had ignored Steve for an entire week, his phone number abandoned on your cluttered nightstand.
The thought of texting him has completely left your mind as you flounce behind the bar, grabbing bottles and ignoring the stick of your non-slip shoes against the liquor-covered ground. It’s a busy Wednesday night due to the small band performing on the half-moon stage in the corner, college kids and young adults that peaked in college ordering more than alcohol than they’ll be able to drink before they’re sent home in a cab. Smoke fills the air from puffs of nicotine and loud voices are everywhere.
You’re leaning across the bar to catch some frat boys’ order when you see him. Steve Harrington strolls into the bar like he owns the place, a dark green sweater stretched across his chest, too tight on his biceps and yet rolled at the bottom near the waistband of his mid-wash jeans. Despite being dressed casually, it's like there’s a spotlight on him, your focus trained.
He’s never been here before. The college kids that usually came into the bar were seniors, out of your grade, or had no idea who you were. Very rarely was there a recognizable face, or at least one that you cared about seeing you.
But this bar isn’t a level playing field between you and Steve. It’s hours into your double shift, sweat sticking all of the unmanageable baby hairs that snuck out of your ponytail to the nape of your neck and forehead. Your black shirt doesn’t show any stains and yet is damp in spots, clinging to your skin, with the scent of your perfume completely encumbered by the smell of copious amounts of alcohol. The cut-off jean shorts that were once fitting on your waist and ass have become slightly baggy as you lost weight, hanging low on your hips, fraying at the bottom so that strings brushed against your legs every time you walked.
You looked a mess and he looked like the world never touched him. The unstoppable Steve Harrington.
Nodding at whatever Chad, Brad and Matt (at least, that’s what you assumed their names were) said without catching a lick of their orders, you turn and head directly towards the end of the bar. The employee’s-only door is right there, your exit, your escape, when there’s suddenly a thud as Steve smacks his palms against the bar and leans towards you.
“You have been ignoring me,” he accuses. An index finger raises to jab in your direction reproachfully.
Your response is a scoff, shoulders raising defensively. “I have not.”
Steve’s elbows hit the bar as he slants the entire top half of his body over the dark wood, no doubt getting his sweater sticky. “Then what do you call not texting me, huh? Or leaving class before I can talk to you?”
He’s right. There was no doubt that you had completely forgotten to text him, especially when you could’ve easily done it right after he had given you the piece of paper. But your stubborn streak always won out over your common sense. “I call it being busy, Harrington. God, you’re clingy.”
“Uh-uh. Don’t turn this on me.” He sounds like a child and looks like one, too, with his wrinkled nose and furrowed brow. A full pout is unfolding on his features and you’d laugh if you weren’t so exhausted and growing irritated. “You’re ignoring me. You said yes and then you made me wait a week. A week! Who does that? You cruel, cruel woman.”
You can’t help it. You laugh. It bubbles in your lungs until it hurts, head falling back and air rushing across the exposed, sweat-slicked skin of your neck. It’s not a pretty laugh, not contained. It’s bordering on being described as a cackle, high-pitched and loud.
When your eyes catch onto Steve’s face again, you can see the pink on the tips of his ears, lips parted in shock. As your laugh ceases into small giggles, you shake your head at him and his incessant need to stare at you like you sprouted four heads. “What, Harrington?”
“I didn’t know you could do that.” His lips smack together before he’s gaping again, puppy eyes wide.
Your hand lays flat on your stomach, willing the cramp to settle itself as you fix him with a confused look. “Do what?”
Steve snorts, finally leaning back to slide onto the barstool next to him. “Laugh. Have a good time.” The toe of his shoes hooks into the bar at the bottom so that he can lean back, arms crossing over his chest.
“Oh, fuck you,” is your response, although it’s lacking any malice. Unfortunately, you hadn’t been sure for a while that you were still able to have fun. The most fun you got was playing some horribly-plotted procedural drama in the background while you worked on homework. You couldn’t remember the last time you picked up a book, much less read it, or took a walk just to take a walk.
It’s his turn to laugh, showing off a pretty smile with too much top teeth, a curve of a wrinkle forming near the base of his nose and crow’s feet near the corners of his eyes. Despite his obvious mirth, he doesn’t try to speak again, filling the space between you with shouts of drunkards and the clinking of glasses.
You let out a heavy sigh, shoulders relaxing as you allow yourself to look at him for just a moment. Because while you knew Steve was handsome, had heard all about it from eavesdropping, it was different when it was staring you right in the face. The darker spots decorating his throat and jaw, the indent above his left eyebrow when he pursed his lips in confusion, the way his hair curled at the ends despite no evidence of him being curly-haired. For a split second, you allow yourself to consider him pretty. But for just a moment.
“I’m sorry I didn’t text. I got too busy with school and work and I forgot.” Your hands raise to gesture around you at the bustling crowd as your eyes stay fixed on him, watching his confused face turn into a very faded smirk.
Steve reaches out to grab a wadded-up straw wrapper from the bar, rolling it between his index finger and thumb nonchalantly. “Didn’t know you were capable of that, either,” he teases, just to laugh and take it back when your eyes turn steely. “Kidding! Kidding.” A pause. “Are you free tomorrow night?”
You’re never free. It’s a common fact. But you could always count tutoring as studying, especially since you had a chemistry quiz coming up. You take a few beats of silence to answer, watching him scoot forward in his stool to get closer to you out of the corner of your eye. Then, you nod, gaze finally landing on him just as his shoulders relax in relief. “I guess I can take some time out of my busy day.”
“You won’t regret it.” He’s fucking beaming, lips pulled back into a big large grin.
“I’m sure I will,” you chirp back bittersweetly.
In the few moments you’ve taken to speak to Steve, you’ve forgotten where you are, even with the bitter stench of liquor clouding your senses and the placebo effect of being around drunk people. You’re brought back to reality by the call of your name, head turning to glance at one of your fellow bartenders just as he waves you over to help.
Your mouth opens to bid Steve goodbye, only to shut when he speaks first. “Can I get a rum and coke?” He asks, voice too sweet to not have any hidden meaning, filled with mischief and cheer.
Fixing him with a concerned look, you nod before turning and starting to make his drink. He sits at the end of the bar even as you walk to the other side to start tending to a birthday girl and her drunk friends. He’s there, eyes burning into your skin as you gracefully go from one customer to another.
And then, at the end of the night after you’ve already locked up and everyone’s gone home, he walks you home with his hands shoved into the back pockets of his jeans. He talks your ear off like you’ve been friends for years, regardless of you being silent and only interrupting him to reply with something snarky.
The annoyingly unshakeable Steve Harrington, who walks you to the threshold of your door before pulling his car keys out of his front pocket, turning and heading back the exact same way you had both just walked.
Unlike the majority of your days, Thursday moves slowly. Classes take twice as long to finish, the words on your homework turn blurry as you stare at them in boredom, your mile-long walk home seems to be never ending.
By the time the sun sets over the horizon and the majority of things you needed to get done that day have all come and gone, nothing but dread sits in your guts. The night before with Steve had been fun, even if it tasted like bile to admit it, but it wasn’t going to happen again. You were in this situation for one reason, and one reason only – the paycheck at the end. Then, you and Steve would live your separate lives again. You, in the background. Steve, underneath the spotlight.
Stepping into the library, you pull your backpack up a bit higher on your back as you head directly for a study room. Once inside, you lay out everything you may need. Pens, markers, pencils, textbooks, the homework the both of you had been assigned that morning open on your computer. It’s almost meticulously laid out, as if you were trying to prove that you were studious enough to be capable of this, as if your high grades and obvious determination were not enough.
Steve strolls into the room four minutes after the time you had set to meet, backpack hanging loosely off of a singular shoulder as he apologizes for being late, rattling about how he had trouble with the time.
It’s almost comical, the difference between the two of you. Your neatly organized bag, with your laptop, then your books, then your notebooks, then your charger, zipped and tucked into a corner. Steve’s bag, hanging open with loose, wrinkled pages peaking out, which he tosses on the floor as he flops into a chair.
Your attention is only fully captured when he sets a coffee cup on the desk, three fingers prodding it closer to where you stand, hunched over the table. “What’s that?” You ask skeptically, looking up through your eyelashes at him.
“Coffee. Just how you like it, not poisoned. Figured you’d need it, since you didn’t get much sleep last night.” A shoulder raises in a lazy shrug, trying to act nonchalant despite the way he watched you take a sip. Surprisingly, he had gotten your order exactly right. He must note your surprise because he speaks again, words coming out rushed. “I took a picture of your coffee cup tag today when you turned to unpack your bag.”
Sweet, yes, but also notably creepy. “Jesus Christ, stalker,” you grumble beneath your breath.
“You’re welcome,” he sings in response. Leaning down, he yanks his expensive laptop out of his bag before letting it flop back onto the floor, peeling open the top as he sets it down on the desk. There’s a brief silence as you both finish setting up, interrupted by a clearing of his throat. “Okay. What’re we doing?”
“Chemistry,” you deadpan. A slow grin pulls on your lips as you watch the mock annoyance blossom on his face, head shaking with a quiet chuckle. “We’re just gonna do the homework she assigned this morning. I can re-explain anything you need help with. It’s just stoichiometry, so it shouldn’t be too bad.”
He lets out a noise of acknowledgement as he stares at the assignment, full eyebrows knitting together. Rather than comfortably, a slightly awkward silence falls over you as his focus continues to shift from the computer screen to your face, as if he’s expecting you to say something. “Can I help you?”
Steve squirms in his chair, letting out a deep sigh. “I already don’t get it,” he mumbles. “I didn’t get a single thing she said up there. It was all just a bunch of letters and numbers.” His lips purse, as if holding in more words, brown eyes looking at you expectantly.
Letting out a huff, you cross your arms over your chest. “Well, maybe you should focus a bit harder on the screen than what my coffee order is.”
“It’s not that,” he argues. His eyes narrow defiantly, real annoyance manifesting there. Something’s struck a nerve, although you’re not sure where exactly you’ve pushed the line, especially when the last few days had made it seem like there wasn’t one.
But it’s written all over his face, the secret he keeps. Curve of his brow, pouted top lip, frustrated eyes.
“What aren’t you telling me, Harrington?” You ask, standing up straight and shoving your hands into your front pockets. “Because I can’t help you if you aren’t clear and honest with me.”
With a heavy sigh, he flops back against the chair, butt scooting forward as his legs stretch out beneath the table. It’s a few heartbeats before he finally takes an intake of breath, gaze moving from the floor to the ceiling and then back to you. His mouth shuts and then opens, tongue running against his bottom teeth. “I don’t get these things like other people do. Math has never been easy, not even addition, subtraction. So, this? Not easy. Not fun.”
You stare at him for a moment, arms crossing over your chest before it finally all connects in your brain. Your lips roll into your mouth before you glance at the whiteboard behind you, gesturing to it. “Is it easier if I… draw it out?”
The tips of his ears turn pink, palm pressing into his closed fist to crack his knuckles. Then, subtly, he nods. “Yeah. That’d be good.”
Nodding, you turn around, grabbing the Expo marker from the small ledge at the bottom of the board. Taking a quick glance at the problem on the laptop, you copy it onto the board before starting to draw it out. Circles for each mole, labeled with a symbol rather than a letter. It takes you longer than it would’ve to just solve it yourself, but you’re now determined to find a way to make it make sense to him.
His focus burns into your skin as you stay turned towards the board, heat curling in every spot his gaze touched. You’re able to shake it off until it’s all laid out in a messy scrawl of black marker, turning back to face him and explain what you had laid out.
It’s extremely late by the time the both of you decide to call it quits, the library emptied out hours ago. You’ve walked Steve through balancing chemical equations for what seems like a million times, finger pushing into the whiteboard and faded charcoal streaks staining the white of the board. The both of you only agree to tap out for the day once the worksheet is completed, both of you exhausted from lack of sleep and too much brain power used.
He insists on driving you home, especially with how dark it is outside. When you explain that you only live a block away and walking in the cool air of the night is soothing, he responds by matching your stride as you head towards home.
For a moment, you don’t speak. You want to think he’s not talking because of his exhaustion, or because you’ve spent the last four hours constantly chatting, but you know better. Embarrassment washes over him in waves, radiating over to you. “When did you find out?”
Steve’s face contorts in confusion for only a brief moment before he finally registers what you mean, shoving his hands into the pocket of his jeans. “When I was younger, my parents just thought I was dumb. Not that they’d say it like that. It was always hidden sweetly. Stevie just needs some extra help sometimes,” he mocks in a higher-pitched tone, complete with a rolling of his eyes. “When I was a teenager, I heard about it from a guidance counselor while talking about college admissions and scheduled myself to see an educational psychologist without them noticing.”
“And it was a relief,” he admits. “I always just thought I was stupid, that cheating on homework and tests would be the only way I’d pass anything. But then I got the accommodations, the extra help I needed, and everything got easier.”
You nod, not wanting to pry too much into the subject in case he closed up. “Why don’t you use the accommodations now?” You question, head tilting as you look up at him.
He shrugs, right foot kicking a bit harder at the concrete as he walks. “I guess I didn’t want anyone knowing. Everyone sees me as this person that everything comes easy to, and sometimes it’s just easier to fit that, I guess.”
A laugh bubbles in your chest, gravitating a bit closer to him until your elbows brush as you walk side-by-side. “God, I feel like an ass,” you breathe out, eyes staring straight ahead at the streetlight-lit streets.
Steve’s head whips to look over at you, looking stricken by your words. “What do you mean?”
The look on his face breaks out another laugh, head shaking. “You don’t want to know the names I’ve called you in my mind. For being so good at school, for being able to go to parties, to be the star of the show and not visibly struggle like I have been. I’m the fucking person people are speaking to when they say don’t judge a book by its cover.” Then, sheepishly, to lighten the mood a bit more, you glance up at him. “Sorry for being an ass to you in my head.”
“And aloud,” he quips, although it's obvious he doesn’t mean it by the grin that spreads on his lips and the chuckle that splits it apart. “I forgive you. But I am taking it as a challenge.”
“A challenge for what?” You snort.
“To make you like me.” He beams, eyes glancing up at the sparse speckle of stars in the sky. Shaking your head, you curl your arms around yourself, shoes scuffing against the ground. “I already like you, Harrington.”
Without warning, Steve’s arm wraps around you, a warm palm on your hip to pull you closer to his side and away from the drunk frat guy stumbling on the grass and sidewalk. The touch is gone as quick as its there, leaving you frazzled as you stare up at his smirking face. “I meant to make you like me enough to say my first name.”
“Not happening.”
He doesn’t have time to answer before you’re at the bottom of the stairs leading to your apartment, his body turning towards you to say goodbye. Slender fingers reach out to adjust the flimsy collar of your jacket before his hand returns to being tucked inside of his pocket. “Thank you for today. Really.” And, to your surprise, he seems genuinely sincere. Laying your hand on his bicep, you give him a soft squeeze and smile before stepping back towards the entrance of your apartment. “Same time next week?”
Two of his fingers raise to his forehead to give you a small salute, grinning as he watches you put the key in the door and slip inside.

i do have time to talk about this now so i will try to articulate my thoughts.
"hamlet killed ophelia" and "polonius' death killed ophelia" are statements that really fail to take into account ophelia as a person. she is often looked at through the lens of the men in her life within the fandom which is just...devastating to see. of course, it can be read that way! that ophelia's life is seen through the eyes of the men in her life more than it is her own. but that doesn't mean that you, as a viewer, have to portray her that way... why would you look at this beautiful work, this beautiful character who just so happens to be a woman...and say "oh, yes, her death stems wholly from hamlet being mean to her"... we know why. it's BECAUSE she is a woman. no matter what i say or anyone else says, she will always been looked down on for this. she isn't the first, she won't be the last. and i fucking hate it.
to say that hamlet's cruelty killed ophelia or that it was her father's death is ultimately just...incredibly reductive. it takes away from ophelia. i'm not saying that those can't be contributing factors. that is entirely possible. so, let's go in order.
first, we have ophelia here. she has very little agency as a woman, even with her father's position. i would argue that her character does not completely lack agency. as she has been in a secret relationship with hamlet, she has clearly gone against her father and brother's wishes. if she were to lose her virginity/become pregnant (i'm a pregnant ophelia truther i'm sorry) it would be a stain on their honour and hers. not only that but consorting with a man - let alone a prince - in private is already scandalous. but ophelia seems happy with this; her secret romance with the prince who writes her terrible poetry that she adores. her secret, her silent, (mostly) unknown rebellion, is something that belongs entirely to her.
she is knowledgeable, beautiful, clever...everything a lady should be. she can read and write and sing and sew and tell you how shitty you are with a flower. she loves her family.
the first straw comes from within: the extreme pressure placed upon her by her father and brother. she adores them, truly! but you cannot deny that they put a lot on her shoulders. she is reminded in the play, by both of them, that she needs to protect her virginity because... that's basically where her worth is. (read: i love polonius and laertes but that doesn't change their words/deeds towards ophelia)
then comes the death of king hamlet and the wedding to follow, a definitely strange thing. hamlet becomes scarcer during this time. there are no more letters, no grazing of fingertips in the halls... she worries about it but what can she do? especially with so much going on! and then her dear brother leaves for france and she's left alone in this quickly crumbling court...
hamlet is distant until he comes to her and frightens her so much she immediately goes to her father...who she very well knows could scold her for it. instead, he takes her to the king and queen. he then forces her to break off her relationship with hamlet and she agrees to...because she has no other choice. hamlet, likely feeling betrayed and put upon, is exceptionally cruel to her. he takes out his pain entirely on her, perhaps knowing that she was set up and seeing that as a further betrayal of him who should have been her husband. rather than deigning to look at it through her eyes, he treats her poorly...and she still prays for him. she still loves him.
with laertes gone and hamlet out of her orbit, she has only her father left to confide in, a man who puts his honour before her emotions. she isn't tended to. she isn't asked after. all she has to do is grieve hamlet and try to keep living her life even as he mocks her further, gives her something of a false hope.
for her father to then be killed by that same man who still may hold some part of her heart is just...devastating. accident or not, ophelia has to contend with the fact that her dear father is dead and her lover held the blade.
people tend to think that is the breaking point for ophelia...but i'd argue that she's been falling apart for far longer than this. with so much pressure on her to be perfect, to keep up appearances, to keep the truth from everyone including people she loves. that had to weigh upon her. everything had always been heavy but she kept her head held high out of duty and love.
ophelia's world has all but unravelled at this point. she's been abused, she's been grieving loss after loss after loss, she's been doing this alone, mostly in her own head. how could it not get to her after a time? she is HUMAN. her descent is seen as quick but i like to think it's been going on for years and she finally has come to a breaking point. one where her exceptional grief, pain, sorrow, and anger have all pooled into one and all she can do to protect herself is sink inwards. this looks to the others as madness but for the first time they listen to her...though all of them seem to miss her meanings entirely. her songs tell a story, her words about the plants are pointed, she knows, even in such a state of severe mental unwellness, that there is truly something rotten in the state of denmark...
whether you believe she was pushed, that she fell, or that she jumped to her own death it doesn't really make much difference as far as i see things. ophelia's death was tragic. it was the product of many things. to blame it on one single act is unfair to ophelia. she didn't kill herself because of a man. she didn't fall to her death because of a man. her death was caused by a system of oppression that constantly beat against her, that told her that her worth was in her body, that told her that she was expendable. she died alone in a world that treated her as though she was.
perhaps it's easier to place the blame on something more tangible. a prince. a father. but to do so takes away from everything ophelia faced, everything she stood against for so long. you take away her struggle, her choices, her heart if you look at things so narrowly.
ophelia will always deserve better than we are willing to give her
i don't have enough time rn to fully go into this but saying that hamlet killed ophelia as a blanket statement is so reductive and lazy...

oshi no ko aqua is such a fun character bc by most counts he's a more than decent guy.
in his first life he regularly visited hospital inpatients who had no visitors. he was genuinely happy and excited to help Ai deliver her babies, because he wants her to be happy on her own terms. he saves Akane simply because he can, and gets angry at the staff on her behalf. he doesn't stop at saving her life and spends sleepless nights turning around her public image. at that point there was nothing in it for him to keep akane around, she was just a person he was able to help and wanted to help.
by most counts he's a pretty decent guy who steps up when people need him most, except. except he's also a guy who really wants to kill his dad and that makes him manipulate people somewhat often and this is somehow not entirely at odds with his instinct to help others
#oshi no ko#like he's a doctor i can rly respect yknow#except for the patricide thing#gorou said do no harm unless it's my dad#also the way that gorou regularly visit patients is something SARINA has to tell the audience and not gorou#bc to gorou is nothing worth mentioning#for quite a while i was like man gorou is kind of sleazy for only visiting sarina esp when she's so young and vulnerable#but he visits the others also... sarina was just the most special patient to him because she introduced him to ai and also#because she was a kid whose parents never showed up#also SPOILERS FOR LIKE CH90+ OR SMTHING BELOW#the way aqua doesnt let akane dirty her hands like ok aqua we get it you want the best for everyone who isnt your dad#wipes tear someone get him therapy hes a decent guy who's ruining his life#also the way he is conscious of how he's playing w akane's feelings and tries very hard to be honest with her and to do her right#like sigh okay aqua i GUESS i cant hate you#and that one ghosting kana arc where i wanted to beat him up and then he was like i dont want to drag kana into this & he looked terrified#like SIGH. OKAY. FINE AQUA i cant hate you after all#like apart from the patricide (which is big know) the biggest downside to his personality is how cold he is#he pushes ppl away all the time and is just borderline rude#but like idk i feel like thats a byproduct of his 'i plan to go to jail for patricide and dont want to drag others down' mindset#which is like... well. you can't hate him for that.. he's looking out for others in his own way

This may be treading into spoiler territory, but I want to ask, do you have anything planned for Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno?
Heyo and thanks for the question heh :D Dw, there's plenty I can talk about without treading on some secrets (espeically since I love the Rival Trio pls they're so good)
It's actually kind of weird how I have some crystal clear ideas for some of them and just ~vibes~ with other moments of their journeys lol. I can tell you (well, not exactly, but you get the gist) the team that I've assigned to Trevor and at least one mon that I really want to give to Shauna but Tierno is just 'please get something other than 3 Water Types'. Okay, but seriously, they're so full of potential and fun stuff all around!! They're (presumably) childhood friends that started their journeys on the same day and split paths, but still have contact with each other!! They all have different dreams and are finding their own way in the world and yet they still make time to support each other whole-heartedly!! It's such a fun spin on the usual dichotomy where people either travel together or not at all and I love that for them. The amount of mental essays and potential fic docs I get thinking about them is incredible in and of itself ngl.
For starters, I'm definitely thinking of putting the Summer Camp Arc way earlier, a little after the second Gym this time. It always confounded me whenever I think about the actual timing of that arc, like why did Ash think about getting ready for his battle with Korrina and 4 eps after he's already at camp (where he learns and then unlearns something), Serena finally commits to something without too much thought (the whole finding herself is cool on paper but there wasn't much focus on it with the actual eps beforehand pls) and lord knows what Clemont was doing. And right after that they teleport to Shalour, no joke. Going back to the Rival Trio, meeting them earlier on gives us more time with them, which everyone can benefit from lol. I have this whole thing with the camp but some points are:
More interactions overall with all of them, and I don't just mean Ash and Tierno + Serena (and Bonnie??) and Shauna + Trevor and Clemont (don't get me started on these two). I want Trevor asking Ash about all of the Pokemon that he's seen. I want Tierno dragging Clemont out of the corner because he's already had experience with Trevor doing the same. I want Serena taking up the dancing style of Tierno for funsies and Trevor trying to stop his Charmander from provoking Chespin (who knows he can't win but will battle anyone who messes with him). I want more stuff overall, more of them mixing and talking around and actually doing camp stuff together and against each other in friendly competition-y ways (edit: and also what was wrong with me why didn't I finish this lol)
Actual activities please, the one thing that always gets me with the Kalos Summer Camp vs the Sinnoh one is that A) the teams aren't that much fun, and maybe it's because they're way too small?? And no one really gets to interact with others outside of already established friend groups, even the npcs B) the activities were less, idk, interactive?? We got warm-up battle with our own mons, Pokevision, that one off-screen fishing competition, orienteering and then group battles at the end. Compare that with Sinnoh's Day 1 (getting used to a new mon and then battling with it the next day), observing Pokemon in the lake and writing up a report (and you can team up if you want), a night time race and then a triathlon.
Continuing from the last point, I enjoy the way that Sinnoh allowed everyone's own mons to shine in their own ways, while showing how people influence other Pokemon and each other as well. Angie's introduction and subsequent on-screen time was impeccable in this arc, Conway in his own team was great (even with his moments) and Jessie in the last team actually made me appreciate her a tiny bit more. They're actually going through Pokemon stuff in this camp and learning new things in fun ways, while also having the catastrophic problems that is bound to happen.
I feel like for the Kalosian variant to have that same impact that the Sinnoh one did, it would need its own standing out points. Maybe this one is more fun-orientated and based on interactions with your own Pokemon as well as the Pokemon that your team members have (and obviously people as well). Maybe we can have activities where they can swap a pokemon with a friend for the day, or go through an obstacle course, or have to find a prize with only one piece of a map. Have slightly bigger teams and have more fun team names! Why couldn't we get a Team Lugia or a Team Porygon and Porygon2, huh?
Team Rocket overall. I'm not elaborating.
There's more stuff but yeah, I feel like having a really good first arc with them would go such a long way in actually establishing credibility for the Rival Trio as a whole. We remember Tierno as the rhymthic battling style guy, and we sort of remember Shauna for introducing Showcases to Serena. But I think it says something when I couldn't tell that both Tierno and especially Trevor were gunning for the league from this arc, and ngl it felt like Shauna wasn't fully sold on Showcases until after the camp, as she was researching at the time of the camp and Serena asked if she registered in the Pancham ep (which could've been a cool plot point if we talked about it, pokeani).
I want to see Trevor learn to connect with Charmander and both of them going beyond with the merging of both their dreams (to be strong and to see all kinds of Pokemon) with both of them balancing courage with sense. I want to see the other side of this with Tierno, of a determined dream with his buddy Squirtle but not so much of a direction or an idea of where to take his dancing skills (and maybe Ash being interested in it along with Serena taking it to heart will inspire him at the camp). I want to see Showcases from Shauna's side, to see how she got into it, the highs and lows, rivals and Pokemon and the climb upwards (instead of being perfect one ep and then okay in the rest). I want the camp to change them just as much as it changed the main gang. And as time goes by they get stronger and more wiser for it, we see their teams grow alongside them, the finals with the Master Class and the League.
And speaking of the camp affecting them as much as our main group, I also want them to have their own wacky adverntures and death-defying feats. Meeting with Legendaries and Mythicals. Getting losts in forests. Trading Pokemon and joining each others side quests. Training montages and new rivals and other friends and so many accidents (and evil teams wait who said that). Ash and co are not the only main characters around here and I hope I get to play around with these goofers as much as everyone else in the really (really) big Kalos and XY overall. So do I have a concrete plan? Not exactly, but I've got some big plot points in my mind and the rest should fill itself out. Hopefully that makes sense?? I've been pooped these last few weeks so that's why it took a while with this response and the more I look at it, the more confused I am with my own response lol. But yah, seriously dw anon, you've been great!!!!!!!!! Loving these questions fr <33 Hopefully you're having a good day sans my late reply :'D
#EDIT I JUST REALISED I FORGOT TO FINISH A DOT POINT LOL dw it's fixed now#not saying that i hated the activities in the kalos summer camp#but the pokevision was a reminder of how much pokepuffs i've seen overall#is more than the amount of times i've seen trevor#a bit later on in this au we're going to have sawyer accidently get stuck with the rival trio and turn it into the rival group#but since you're talking about the trio themselves i won't yap on about it heh#me saying 'i want' as if i'm not writing this thing#one thing i can say for sure is that trevor's eye for unusual pokemon is going to get him places (and a temp pokemon)#i don't think that we're going to see them 'in focus' before the camp though so there's that#i have this fun idea where once the character pops up in someone's story#they can start to branch out and have their own fics if needs must#so at the end i will be dying with like 30 different perspectives to deal with#but also we're looking to the future here. yeah the past will inform us of the future#but we're not going to have whole fics about their baby photos#they can shame each other in front of strangers in current time like the rest of us#(something something in life you can't go back to before something moving on with what you have now something)#yeah they're going to have so many arcs and big events of their own lol#AND POKEMON TEAMS PLS WHY DO THEY BARELY HAVE MONS#took a very tiny bit of insp from the games#in which i wonder to this day what did they have to go through on route 10#but also their dreams there as well#there's this strange thing between anime and games where the games they have concrete dreams#that y'know exist and that they're working towards#and in the anime they get more buffed up but also lose a little bit of that personaility and depth in a way#but seriously tierno got treated the best out of the three of them anime-wise so at least he got one win#got to stop yapping in the tags but yeah thanks anon you've given me an idea for another mon in tierno's team#rest assured they'll have a great time here as well#.... once i reach them that is#diancie delivers

Lucifer doesn't care how the labcoats say it works; he knows there's no such thing as a clean break from a drift the minute the plug is pulled. Instead, Michael goes from a second consciousness beside his own to being dragged out of Lucifer the further Lucifer gets from him, both of them gripping tight to the connection until it slips, until it snaps, with a violent recoil that knocks Lucifer's brain out of alignment and reminds his legs that they don't work. His next step falls too fast, too heavily, and refuses to take his weight. It's only Michael, now only a voice outside of Lucifer's head yelling his name, catching him from behind that allows Lucifer to collapse to the floor with his dignity intact.
#is this more than one sentence? yes. yes it is. because tumblr deleted this post once and pissed me off.#i had so many tags about lucifer already and boom. gone.#anyway. tfw you see your boyfriend get severely injured during a battle and this makes you panic so bad you manage to make it a few meters#which is a lot for a guy who can't actually walk.#lucifer's got a whole Situation. turns out plugging a guy's brain up to a giant robot is not without its bugs.#especially when said guy was one of the first to be stuck inside the giant robot with his brother. and testing was a lower priority due to#everyone wanting a faster solution to the Giant Fucking Monsters. so lucifer's brain got overloaded and can't send signals to his legs#anymore to move right unless he's hooked up to a mech. technically when this first happened the doctor told him 'well if you stop doing mec#shit you can walk again.' but 1) he's not doing that. and 2) that was years ago. just because that recommendation is still on a file#somewhere doesn't mean it would actually work for him. or even that it would have back then. it's still the official answer for 'fixing' hi#because that's better optics than the truth. which is that he can't walk.*#(technically. technically. if he was left disconnected from the mech for a week he could walk. it would also be exhausting. and painful.#and slow. this is not something lucifer considers to be helpful information when he moves faster and with more ease in his chair.#this is something other people like to point out about him that makes him want to start hitting them. and it's not even really true anymore#the 'a week disconnected' thing. again. was a long time ago. it would take over a month for him to stand nowadays.)#(v few people Get all of this but like. michael is one of them. he's in lucifer's head enough that it would be weirder for him not to get i#add to that him being one of the few people who has seen lucifer walk nowadays and focused more on 'hey he looks like he hates that'#than praising it. and he gets it. and is also the requisite amount of annoyed when lucifer *runs off* before michael can help him into his#chair!! not the first time this has happened and will not be the last. michael's used to catching him.)#ask#oh my god that was so much rambling. this isnt even the point of the fic btw. this is just. backstory. worldbuilding.

"all this foreshadowing abt declan dying and then he didn't even die" well personally i think declan got murdered dead by mstief in greywaren so. actually 2 me he did die. Badly.
#like sorry 2 to say it but also not sorry the declan i know would never do to matthew what he did in gw..#like obviously he has done some shit stuff to matthew (and ronan as well. this to mean ronan did shit stuff irt matthew as well not declan#did shit stuff to ronan. though he very much did and vice versa but like not the point here.) BUT i know he would NEVER strip matthew of his#autonomy like that and NEVER for so long. like i didn't write declan lynch as a character but also i know he wouldn't do that. that's his#baby brother........and i know he feels like matthew robbed him of his youth and his life and whoever he would've grown up to be but HE JUST#WOULD NEVER....i know this....like sorry but that is the most awful fucked up shit to do ever in the entire world. someone depends on you#and looks up to you and trusts you and you take away the thing that keeps them awake??? i'd even say the thing that essentially keeps them#ALIVE bc without a sweetmetal dreams aren't really alive they're just sleeping for eternity which is a kind of death. LIKE......#that just baffles me so much u just have to be soooooo uncaring to do that....like if he just did it in the moment of anger - snatched that#pendant off matthew's neck so he fell asleep and declan wouldn't have to deal with him anymore and then immediately afterwards was like.#what have i done this is so fucked up to do to someone. and put the pendant back on matthew. and apologized prefusely for it. that would#have still not been fine but in bouts of anger ppl do stupid desperate things that negatively affect others and it would've been#considerably less fucked up than it is now. like declan kept that pendant away for UP TO TWO DAYS. he drove the whole way back put ronan#somewhere safe carried matthew out of the car and into the house carried him upstairs into the bedroom and put him in bed went back#downstairs went outside locked the car went back into the house ate showered slept woke up ate breakfast again go through the whole day and#NOT ONCE did he think to himself oh this thing i'm doing is genuinely horrible i can't just take away someone's like. awareness. like that#& went to go 'wake' matthew????? NOT ONCE????? ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS???? NOT ONCE IN THOSE ONE AND A HALF OR TWO OR POSSIBLY MORE DAYS???#also just the whole. turning into his father thing. HARD NO. u mean the same declan who hated his father for very right reasons and hated#what he did to the entire lynch family both while he was alive and after he died the same declan that hated all the trading and buying and#selling dream things business and just that underground market in general (that btw. put the family he had left in life-threatening danger.)#the same declan who hated his father for dreaming a more perfect and loving unconditionally copy of his actual mother (rightfully so.) went#on 2 go into the exact business he always hated w/ a fiery passion?? ur also telling me he invited his father's killer to his wedding? fake.#trc#greywaren#<- needs its own tag bc i'm not putting it in the same category as call down the hawk my beloved call down the hawk.#anyway. that entire essay in the tags can be summarized w/: who declan ended up as & his entire arc is SO shit i hate it sm peace n love 🙏#as i've said before. me: mom can we have declan lynch? mom: no we have declan lynch @ home. declan lynch @ home: declan lynch in greywaren.#<<<<< full experience of reading gw. 2 me. ARGHHHH AOUGH THE POTENTIAL IT HAD THE POTENTIAL IT WASTED... IT'S ACTUALLY SO SAD....

Yandere Prison Warden
After getting thrown into jail for a crime you refuse to talk about, one of the wardens takes a keen interest in your past. Tags: Male Yandere x Fem Reader, blood, violence, mentions of child abuse, lowkey kind of sweet, 10k words
Tumblr media
Being in jail is no fun. Being in a maximum security prison after being found guilty of homicide? Somehow even less fun.
You've tried to make the best of it. Got some posters to put up in your cell, started a book club, took up macramĂŠ. But you can't really paint a veneer of normalcy over incarceration.
It's violent, it's dirty, and most inmates tend to avoid you. And the thought of at least thirty more years of the same routine, day in and day out? Well, that's plain depressing.
Still, some days are worse than others. Today seemed like it was going to be a good day. The cafeteria food was actually hot, an acquaintance shared some gum with you, you managed to get a new book from the library. Things were, if not great, at least bearable.
Until the tour.
The wardens - also called Corrections Officers, COs, screws, or rotten, motherless bastards - were almost always training new recruits. The prison system had an unsurprisingly high turnover, which meant an almost constant stream of new faces. With time, you'd learnt to ignore the tours and walk-throughs. With one exception.
Slammer.
He was a senior CO who seemed to almost always turn your cell into the final stop on his grand introductory tour of the glorious prison system. Maybe you were just nice to look at or maybe he had a chip on his shoulder. Either way, things almost always ended with you being gawked at.
Like right now.
The 'tour group' was clustered outside your cell. Slammer was in the lead, his baton out and his little piggy eyes gleaming.
The trainees were in their new minted uniforms. Most of them uncomfortable and tugging at the scratchy, starched collars. You could have told them not to bother. That it was better for them to at least pretend they were comfortable. COs weren't your friends - every single prisoner in here would see that lack of confidence, that slight sense of unease. And they would pounce on it the first chance they got.
You hated being looked at like a zoo animal. And you especially hated the way Slammer showed you off to them like you some prize piece in his menagerie. Fellonus Homicidus perhaps.
You hated feeling their eyes on you. But you weren't going to make the mistake of showing them that. The less the COs knew about you, the better. It was like rule number three of incarceration. (Rule one being ‘never trust a warden’ and rule two being ‘don't fight the jacked inmate with prison tattoos.' Obviously).
You didn't bother to get up from your bunk to greet them. You stayed just as you had all afternoon - one arm behind your head and one leg hanging off the bed.
You pretended to keep reading your beat up paperback.
"This one is especially dangerous. Stabbed her neighbour forty eight times before the cops could get her off," Slammer told them.
"Forty six," you corrected without looking away from your book. "Coroner said it was forty six. Allegedly."
You could feel their eyes on you again.
"Right," Slammer drawled, "Because those last two stabs made all the difference."
You didn't bother to answer him.
"She really did that?" One of the trainees, a lanky guy with too large ears, asked. "She looks harmless."
You were almost offended at that. You flicked your eyes over them. They were mostly men, and most of them were looking at you in that hungry, contemplative way you knew so well. Wondering how much they could get away with once they were full fledged COs.
It should have bothered you. It didn't. Horny COs were just a part and parcel of life here. If you were smart, you could wring all sorts of goodies out of them before their supervisors caught on.
"Listen to me son. Every single prisoner in here is dangerous. They wouldn't be locked up if they were like you and me. They don’t feel guilt, not even when they steal from their poor old momma."
"You wound me, Slammer." You turned the page with a flick of your thumb. "I loved my mama. Only stole from her once or twice."
You didn't have much hope of them noticing your sarcasm. COs weren't the brightest bunch.
Slammer ignored you. "Don't ever say they're harmless. They sure as hell ain't. Two weeks here and you'll know exactly what I mean."
You could tell they didn't believe him. In the popular imagination, a women's prison was nothing like the men's. Women weren't dangerous. The trainees probably assumed you spent all day knitting scarves and talking about the lovely husband and kids you were oh so keen to get back to.
They would lose that notion pretty damn fast.
"Are you supposed to tell us the prisoners' charges?" A man's voice, neutral and respectful, but you thought you could hear a hint of reproach in his tone.
You looked back at the group and you were amazed that you didn't notice him earlier. He stood perfectly still, hands clasped behind his back like he was at parade rest. Unlike the others, he had the quiet confidence of someone who knew their job and knew it well.
His blond hair was slicked back and his uniform sat on him in a way that was a lot more natural than any of the others trainees. Ex-military or police, if you had to guess. Not that unusual. Corrections wasn't such a huge leap from those fields.
You sat up and answered him before Slammer could get a chance.
"He's not. Inmate information is confidential. But Slammer here doesn't always listen to the rules."
You shot the head CO a condescending smile. "He's a reaaal rebel."
Slammer scoffed. "The new officers have a right to know exactly how dangerous you are."
You put a hand to your chest, all faux innocence. "Little old me? Slammer, I'm a saint! A nun! I've been to chapel three times this week."
"Yeah. To sell cigarettes and buy booze."
"Just as the good Lord intended."
Slammer didn't find you funny. You could tell from the fact that a) he wasn't laughing and b) he was grinding his teeth like he was a beaver about to dig into a particularly scrumptious tree.
"Fact is, prisoners like her are the worst of the bunch. You think they're harmless, but the second you turn your back, they'll shiv you and run off with your tazer."
You grinned at the trainees as winningly as you could.
"Only did that once by the way. And the guy had it coming, swear on my mama."
Most of them were shifting around uncomfortably. Hearing Slammer keep banging on about your crimes was finally enough to get it through to them. The prisoners are not nice.
You'd assume that was obvious, but incarceration taught you that however slow you thought the wardens were, they could always get dumber.
The only one who didn't seem bothered was the blonde. He was looking at you like you were nothing more or less than a piece of furniture. You got the sense that he was analysing you, looking past your fake smile and even faker bravado.
You also got the feeling that he wasn't impressed with what he saw.
You flopped back down on your bunk and tried not to let it bother you. One more person thinking you were a delinquent. What difference did it make?
He was the last to leave. His eyes did one final scan of your cell before they landed on your paperback. He raised a brow.
"The Green Mile? Isn't that a bit depressing?"
You shrugged, uncomfortable but not entirely sure why.
"I like to think of it as aspirational."
"And why's that?"
"The wardens aren't all assholes."
That earned you a flicker of a smile before he turned on his heel and disappeared.
Tumblr media
You forgot all about him after a week. To be fair, there were other things to occupy you. A fist fight on D Block that you somehow got dragged into. Drama in the book club. A warden getting caught with his pants down. Standard prison fare.
It was a Tuesday when you saw him again, in the middle of the cafeteria. You only had a split second to recognise him before he was dousing you in pepper spray and sweeping your legs out from under you.
That was misleading maybe. He wasn't totally unjustified in greeting you like that. You were technically in the middle of beating a CO with a lunch tray.
(He deserved it, but that's not exactly a good excuse when his nose is gushing blood all over the table).
You were still coughing on pepper spray when he hauled you to solitary, your eyes and throat burning.
"Glad...to see you got...the job Blondie," you managed to wheeze.
He sent you stumbling into the cell with a practiced push.
"Yep," he said simply, "They hired me on the spot."
Your shoulder was still a painful mess when he slammed and locked the door, leaving you in the half dark to wash the stinging out of your eyes.
You rubbed at your aching joints. "I can see why."
Pepper spray was considered the least lethal way to subdue a prisoner. Easier than a taser, less brutal than the baton. But despite its shining reputation, it was your least favourite tool in a CO’s belt. A taser was at least quick. The baton left a bruise but the pain didn't linger.
Pepper spray on the other hand? It left your eyes and throat and nose irritated for days.
You were still trying to rinse it out of your mouth when he returned, boots heavy on the linoleum and his keys rattling.
You turned to him with your white prison issued tank practically soaked. To most other guards, that would be an invitation to gawk. Not him though. His eyes never dipped below your chin.
"Sit down. I've got some cold cloths for the swelling."
You sat, more confused than anything else.
"That's not standard regulation Blondie. Usually, they just let us suffer through it."
He tossed you the cloths, still icy from a quick minute in the freezer. You pressed them to your face gratefully.
"It is standard regulation. Treating pepper spray once the prisoner is subdued."
You scoffed. "Why am I not surprised that no one ever told us that?"
He stayed quiet and you peaked at him over the edge of the fabric. He was a lot leaner than you realised, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, his forearms toned with muscle.
And covered in tattoos. Damn, he had some sick tats.
You cleared your throat, not exactly sure why he bothered to do this for you.
"Thank you. It sucks to deal with. Makes everything taste awful. For days."
He raised a brow.
"I just dragged you to solitary and your main worry is that the food won't taste good?"
"The food never tastes good. This is more so a matter of bloody awful becoming hellish awful."
"It can't be that bad."
"Get back to me after you've spent five years chomping down on lukewarm hash browns and soggy peas."
"You've been in here five years already?"
You sighed, pressed the cloth against your brows so you didn't have to look at him.
"Yep. And I've still got another thirty to go."
"Why?"
That got an unexpected laugh from you.
"Didn't you hear Slammer? Homicide. Found guilty on all charges."
"Did you do it?"
"Allegedly."
What was his angle? Was this some new, interactive approach to corrections? Getting friendly with the inmates so they were less likely to riot?
"Didn't they teach you not to ask those sorts of questions?" you asked. "Not really something people in here like to talk about."
You saw that little flicker of a smile again.
"They did. But I get the feeling you don't mind it as much."
He was right. You didn't mind. At least, not with him. He had a kind of quiet confidence that, surprisingly, made you feel comfortable.
"Why did you want to work in a prison? Or more accurately, what the hell went wrong that you ended up here?"
"You think it's such a bad job?"
"I'd never do it and I live here."
He leaned against the cell wall, hands on his belt. There it was again. A veteran's stance, weapons in easy reach in case you tried something.
"It's a boring story."
"I've got nothing but time."
That earned you another raised brow.
"As we've established."
What's this? A CO actually cracking a joke? You never thought you'd see the day.
"And anyway, we're not here to talk about me. I'm here to find out why you attacked my fellow officer."
Ah, so that was why he was playing nice.
"I didn't like his face."
He narrowed his eyes and pushed himself off the wall. "Disappointing. I thought you'd have a better reason than that."
You didn't like his tone, or the way it made you feel. Ashamed. Like you'd failed his test, even though you didn't know you were supposed to be studying.
He paused at the door, like something occurred to him.
"What's her name? The girl he was picking on?”
You raised you head. "What?"
"The guard you attacked. He was causing trouble, wasn't he?"
How did he know? Did he see it? Oh God, was Ruby going to get into shit because of you?
"Listen, she had nothing to do with it. She had no idea what I was going to do. It was all me."
He shrugged. "How am I supposed to believe that's true if I don't know the full story?"
You bit your lip. You didn't like saying too much to the COs. And your instinct was telling you this one would be able to read a lot deeper than the rest.
"Guess I'll just have to ask her then."
"No!" You dug your hands into your sheets to stop yourself from bolting to your feet.
"No, Ruby has nothing to do with it I swear. She’s almost sixty. She gets enough shit as it is. Just leave her alone."
You swallowed. "Please."
He was looking at you again, much sharper this time.
"Explain."
Your grip on the sheets tightened until your knuckles were pale. Did you really have to talk about this shit out loud?
"Ruby is..." you started. "She's different. Older than most of us, keeps to herself. She's not...all there, if you know what I mean."
He turned to face you and settled back against the wall. "Go on."
"Most of the inmates don't bother her. Why would we? She's just a little old lady. Not harmless, no ones really harmless, but about as close to it as you can get. But some of the COs..."
His lips thinned. "They have a nasty streak."
"You can call it that. Usually it's just calling her names. But sometimes some of them get it into their heads that what she really needs is a hard knock. Rattle those screws around enough and maybe they'll fall back into place."
"Is that what happened today?"
You sighed, looked down at your hands and the blood dried in the crevices of your nails.
"Yep. CO was all in her face, being nasty. Grabbing her wrist. Taunting her. And she... she just stood there and took it. Old enough to be the his grandmother and he didn't care."
You closed your eyes.
What else were you supposed to do?
He'd been at it for five minutes when you stood up with your lunch tray. By then you'd had enough. No one else was going to do anything, so it was going to be you.
The lunch trays were a hard plastic, meant to keep from breaking on impact. You'd left your half eaten bowl of chow on the table and walked up behind him, your heart beating steady and calm. Some part of you had already decided the consequences were worth it.
Some of the inmates were looking at you and every single one of them knew exactly what you intended. But none of 'em said a word.
You could still feel the smack of your tray against his head. The way he stumbled forward with the momentum.
You'd caught him by surprise and you weren't going to let him get over it. You swung the tray at his face, as hard as you could. You could feel his nose breaking. He was on his knees by then. And maybe you'd have let him up, might have ended things there.
But then you saw Ruby's wrist. A frail thing, with the warden's finger marks standing out a livid red.
"I see."
You opened your eyes. He was still watching you, his face unreadable.
You shrugged and tried to smile.
"Today was practically hum drum by our normal standards."
"How exciting," he deadpanned.
"Just wait 'til Christmas time. It gets positively festive."
He snorted and started for the door again.
"You're aren't such a hard ass after all, are you? Saving little old ladies in your spare time," he said.
"Just think how safe senior citizens will be when they let me back out."
It was only for a few seconds, but you liked it when he smiled. It softened that tough guy demeanour just enough to make you wonder about the man underneath.
When he was gone, you laid down with the cloth still pressed against your cheek. Who'd have thought it. A CO who you didn't want to punch in the teeth.
Tumblr media
The CO you beat didn't come back to work for two weeks, and when he did, you heard that he asked for a transfer to a different block.
Ruby made you a macaroni necklace and said something about alien warships picking you out of everyone else. You figured that was her way of saying thank you.
And maybe the most notable thing of all: Blondie was assigned to your cell block. Surprising. Yours wasn't the worst part of the prison, but you weren't a bunch of saints either. Rookies wouldn't even be considered until they'd had at least a year's experience.
It was yet another thing pointing to his past. Something, somewhere, had given him enough experience to slip ahead on the promotion queue.
You didn't much mind it. Hell, you'd almost say it was enjoyable. He wasn't rude, he didn't pick favourites and he was keen eyed enough to catch a lot of the under table business that inmates engaged in.
You didn't go out of your way to talk to him - getting too cosy with a CO wasn't a good look - but you made it a point to greet him whenever you could.
Well, you called it greeting. Most other folk saw it as a smirk and a sing song "Hey there Blondie!"
He must have had some sort of interest in you too. You'd look up from your lunch and see him watching you, head tilted just a little. Like he was trying to puzzle you out. You took to winking at him whenever you caught him.
It would usually be enough to make him look away, but never for long. His eyes would always find you again.
You should have been annoyed at it, or unnerved. But honestly, the way he looked at you was borderline sweet compared to the other COs. You'd occasionally catch some of them watching you too. Usually with their hands on their belts.
There wasn't much to do in prison besides read, sleep and exercise. But around the third week after his arrival, you started getting letters.
Not totally uncommon. Plenty of folk wrote to prisoners. But to you? That was a different story. You put the letters you received into two categories: perverts and the pervertedly curious.
The perverts were exactly what you'd expect. People who thought your mugshot was the hottest thing since Megan Fox taking a swim. Their letters were particularly uncomfortable to read. And often sticky. You never wrote back.
The pervertedly curious were a whole ‘nother class. They probably ran across your case on a true crime podcast or on a documentary. And their first thought at hearing the story was to wonder exactly what it felt like. They'd write and ask you what was going through your mind. What did the knife feel like sinking into his flesh? What did the blood smell like?
A fun bunch of freaks. You'd write back sometimes, more for your own amusement than anything else. Your answers were never even remotely true. I was mostly thinking about how late my taxes were and what a bastard it would be clean up. Stabbing him felt like cutting a steak except more scream-y. The blood smelt like a stack of pennies on a warm summer day, but mostly it just smelt like blood.
You'd always end your sentences with your trademark allegedly.
These new letters were nothing like those at all. The paper was crisp and clean and most importantly, not sticky. The folded lines were sharp, like the writer pressed them down with their thumb nail.
The writer didn't ask about the murder. They didn't ask about your bra size. They were almost...sweet.
You must be lonely in prison. You must get bored. I hope you're safe.
You read it again and again before you wrote a reply. Silly really. They seemed much too nice to be writing to someone like you. Maybe someone trying to do a good deed.
You should scare them off. Writing to a prisoner is sweet and all, but most folk in here would use it as just another way to wring someone dry. You were no different. Your anonymous pen pal would be better off working at the animal shelter if they wanted to help a stray.
I've got a whole host of buddies. We discuss the best ways to get blood out of our socks and pillow cases. I'm not bored at all. We've got a badminton league. Obviously the best way to spend federal cash. I'm as safe as a lamb in the hay. Only got stabbed twice last week.
There. That would get rid of them.
You mailed it out on cheap exam pad paper with a stamp you lifted off your neighbour. You didn't expect a reply.
When the mail got delivered the next week, you were more than a little surprised to find a new letter waiting for you.
The same crisp paper, the same neat, slanting hand.
You can't scare me off. I know you're only prickly and sarcastic because deep down you're scared. Scared a lot. Scared all the time.
I looked you up. You were barely out of high-school when it happened. Well behaved, normal family, no record of misdemeanours. Prison must have been an awful adjustment.
You had to put the letter down and take a deep breath. The kid clocked you. Less than two letters in and they'd read you better than anyone had in years. Better than anyone ever had maybe.
What were those first few years like, I wonder. How did you survive? Please write me back. I like checking in on you.
You considered not replying. What were they hoping to achieve, getting all familiar with a killer?
The letter sat on your shelf for half a week before you gave in and wrote a reply.
I survived by being mean and cruel and evil. Stop writing me kid. I'll bite your head off and drink your blood.
The next letter came almost instantly. If anything, the writer seemed amused more than anything else.
Scary. Did they put you in for homicide or suspected vampirism? You want to get rid of me, but I'm not going anywhere. You don't have to reply, but I know you must need a friend. They aren't easy to come by behind bars. Any alliances you form will always have the expectation of reciprocation. It must be exhausting.
Did I tell you I bought a new car last week? A Camaro. I know. How stereotypical of a Marine to buy a car like that, right? But it's gorgeous. I'd like to take you for a drive someday. Nothing but the open road. I think you'll like that.
You didn't even wait a full day before you wrote back. Because they were right. You really did need a friend. Someone to just shoot the breeze with, without any subtext of a favour being repaid later on.
You didn't know anything about your mysterious pen pal. Not their age or their gender or even the colour of their eyes. They signed all their letters with a simple from B.
They mostly asked you questions. Not obtrusive or gross ones either. They wanted to know which foods you missed the most, which tv series and movies you wanted to catch up on, which actors you thought were getting Grammys this year.
When Grammy and Oscar season rolled around, you choked out a fellow inmate to get the TV remote. You left them sitting up on the couch, passed out and looking like they were just asleep. Blondie almost caught you. He walked past the door and paused to stare at your victim.
You gave him your most charming grin.
"She said the opening ceremony was too long and to wake her up when the red carpet is over," you explained.
He scoffed and moved on.
When you wrote your next letter, you packed it full of award show details.
B wrote to you for the better part of a year. But you only learnt a handful of things about them. They were in the Marines, they now worked some kind of federal job, they had tattoos, they liked Nicole Richie, and they hated fried chicken. Like really hated it. With a passion.
I promise to never cook you fried chicken, you wrote, only fried calamari, fried onion rings, fried mushrooms, fried liver, fried green beans, fried -
Can you even cook? they wrote back. Or are you just running your mouth?
For a while, you were happy. They'd occasionally send you new books in the mail, burnt CDs to listen to on your busted radio, packets of sweets.
Prison was hell, but it was a structured, expected sort of hell. You could deal with it.
But then she arrived.
You didn't bother to learn her name. She was tall and lean, green eyes like pond scum, and teeth chipped from fighting. You didn't like her from the first, but you had no reason to quarrel and so avoided her as much as you could.
Blondie didn't like her much either, and that's where the trouble started.
She'd deliberately bump into Blondie whenever she could. Hard enough that you could almost feel the impact.
"Oops... Didn't see you there."
If it was anyone else, they'd probably get thrown in solitary. But Blondie was a stickler for the rules. He'd brush his uniform off like just touching an inmate was enough to cause a plague. And then he'd settle his blue eyes on her, cool and detached.
"Watch where you're going next time."
That was how it went on. Weeks of passive aggression, slowly getting more and more physical.
You didn't want to intervene. Blondie could protect himself. Still, you kept your eye on him as much as you could.
There was another thing about the new girl you didn't like.
She had a way with people.
Could convince even the most stubborn inmate to do something, even if it was against their own best interest.
She got an inmate who was almost out on probation to attack and almost blind a CO. She got innocent old Ruby to start selling cigarettes. She almost got you to pick a fight with someone for damn near no reason at all.
She was dangerous, in a way no one before her had been. You could feel it in the harsh whispers after lights out. Got to make those dirty screws pay. Fucking COs have had it too good for too long. Who the fuck do they think they are anyway?
A riot was brewing. You started staying in your cell a lot more. Managed to pull some metal out of your mattress and spent every night sharpening it to a point.
Some of the COs were smart enough to notice the tension and your outside time got shortened to half an hour, lunch got pulled back to fifteen minutes. Their solution was to keep you locked in your cells for as much of the day as possible.
Not a good move.
Prisoners with no distractions tend to amuse themselves by planning all sorts of nasty things. How to grab a CO from behind and get their keys before anyone noticed. How to choke out the one bastard who kept throwing them in solitary. How to pay back all those times a CO groped them in the middle of a search.
You could feel it heightening to a point. Could feel it in the dirty, oily stickiness of the air.
When Blondie came past on patrol, you stopped him. You'd been hoping to catch him for a few days and you weren't going to miss your chance.
"Yes?"
Those blue eyes were staring straight through you, cool as a winter without a radiator.
You remembered the pepper spray, the cool cloth pressed against your burning skin.
"Listen, I think you should call in sick for the next week."
Oh no, it came out sounding like a threat.
You cleared your throat, tried to smile.
"I owe you one, okay? So just trust me on this and don't show up for a while."
He narrowed his eyes.
"There's going to be a riot,” he said.
"Seems like it."
"When?"
"I don't know. It's not exactly a scheduled thing. But it's going to be bad."
He looked away from you, scanning the long row of cells across from you. You could hear the ambient shuffling and coughing and laughing of a hundred people living together.
"Can it be stopped?"
You sighed. You'd seen it play out a few times already. Wardens had all sorts of ways to handle riots, but once the fever was brewing, it was near impossible to break. It was in the atmosphere, in the tense glances between prisoners. It was bigger than all of you.
He must have seen the answer in your face.
He shook his head, stubborn to the last.
"I've got a job to do. If I got scared every time the prisoners got rowdy I'd be out of work real quick."
You sighed and pulled away from the bars.
"Your funeral Blondie."
You really hoped it wouldn't be.
Tumblr media
The thing that started the riot was so small that on a normal day you'd call it borderline routine.
A CO was watching the cafeteria line, hustling people along when they paused longer than he liked. When he came to one of the girls a few spots ahead of you, he got impatient and shoved her forward. Not hard. Barely enough to make her stumble.
You cringed. For a second or two, you imagined you could feel it on your skin. A static crackling like lightning about to strike.
She punched the CO in the throat.
He stumbled backwards, holding his neck and gasping.
Other prisoners  were already moving forward. Three of them grabbed his arms and bunch of the others ripped off his gear. Taser and baton and pepper spray now in the hands of a pissed and petty prison populace.
The other officers were already coming forward, batons out. Usually that would be enough to break things up, but they had just about everyone against them. Numbers always won.
The veneer cracked and the riot finally started. It took less than a minute.
The yelling was enough to make your head throb. Bouncing off the cafeteria walls and ringing ringing ringing in your ears.
You ducked out of the way as much as possible, always on your guard. Riots weren't just dangerous for the wardens. Inmates saw them as a way to settle old scores without ending up in solitary or back in court. And lord knew,  you'd accumulated a hell of a lot of grudges over the years.
A prisoner rushed you. She was clutching a shiv made out of a ballpoint pen and a piece of wire coat hanger.
You dodged, sticking your foot between her legs and making her stumble. Your adrenaline was pumping, your vision dark at the corners.
You grabbed her hair before she could recover, and slammed her head against the edge of a metal cafeteria table.
She dropped like a rock.
You stepped away before any of her friends noticed you, your heart so far up your throat you could almost taste it.
That's when you saw her. That green eyed bitch, slipping out a side door with two of her cronies behind her.
You could feel your neck prickling.
There was only one score she had to settle and you knew exactly who it was aimed at.
You followed as quickly as you could. The backup had arrived and two tear gas canisters were belching thick white smoke into the room.
Despite your best efforts, by the time you made it out your eyes were stinging and she was long gone.
You swore and sprinted down the corridor, thinking fast.
If she managed to corner Blondie, she’d want to take her time with him. That's how scores were settled when you had a mean streak. Slow. Painful.
That meant she’d want privacy. Somewhere the riot officers wouldn't immediately find her when things calmed down.
You grabbed the corner of a wall and used it to shoot down the main hall, prison issued sneakers pounding the linoleum.
The showers. That's exactly where you'd go if you were her.
She didn't have time to block the doors. You banged through them shoulder first, the same way a cop would. The room was still thick with steam from earlier and Blondie's blood was running in thin streams toward the drain.
"The fuck is wrong with you?" she barked.
Green eyes, the one who instigated this whole mess.
She was standing with her sleeves rolled up and a razor blade between her fingers. The small, rectangular kind that goes in a straight razor.
Her two cronies were holding Blondie by the arms, stretching him out like he was on a cross.
Blondie clearly hadn't made it easy for them. Green eyes had a nasty bruise blooming on her cheek and both her cronies were sporting ugly nose bleeds. His baton was laying abandoned on the shower floor, rolled up against a bench.
Even a man as strong and well trained as he was couldn't go up against three armed felons and win.
You must have been just in time. The worst they'd done to him was cut his cheek, all the way from his temple to the bridge of his nose. It was bleeding bad, but didn't look too deep.
You straightened up and smiled at them, big and broad like you'd never had a better reunion.
"Having some fun without inviting me?"
Green eyes scoffed. "Why do you care? This shit is personal. Find something else to do."
You tilted your head, still smiling.
"You're right. It is personal. As in I owe Blondie over there a personal favour. As in I don't want you fucking with what's mine."
Blondie was watching you with those sharp eyes. If he took issue with being called yours, he didn't show it.
"Let him go." You didn't scream. You didn't demand. You simply said it. That's what made them nervous.
"Listen bitch - I don't care that everyone is scared of you. What you did on the outside doesn't matter one fucking bit."
You kept smiling, but your fingers were buzzing. The same why they had the night you stabbed a man forty six times.
You flicked your wrist and the shiv fell into your palm.
It was as long as your hand and sharpened into a wickedly pointed tip. It could slide between someone's ribs and kill them in less than five heart beats.
"They aren't scared of me because of what I did outside."
The two cronies were looking at each all worried-like. You vaguely recognised them, but it was clear that they recognised you no problem.
The boss turned to face you fully, light and easy on her toes like a boxer.
"You really gonna make a big deal over a fucking screw? A CO?"
"Since he's the only CO I've met who isn't a total piece of shit, I've got a vested interest in keeping him around."
She rolled his shoulders like a fighter would. You bit back a sigh. This was going to really hurt.
She didn't come at you right away. She ran her eyes over your body - your posture, your build, everything that might give you an advantage.
Then she charged.
Fast, even on the still slippery tiles. There wasn't enough time to duck or dodge.
You blocked her first punch with your arms, her fist smacking against your skin and spiking a sharp pain all the way down to your bones.
You stepped backward and kicked at her knee, but she saw it coming and turned her leg at the last second, took it on her thigh instead.
She’d dropped the razor blade - without a handle it was just as dangerous to her as it was to you - which meant she had full use of her fists.
She kept pummelling at you, catching you on the ribs and then on the sternum. You slammed back against the lockers, winded.
She pushed her advantage, going straight for your throat. You dropped down at the last second and her fist slammed full force into the metal.
She screamed and then screamed again as you slammed your shiv into her thigh.
You grabbed her throat and shoved her away from you, breathing hard.
She was clutching her thigh with one hand, blood welling up between her fingers. Dark red, but not enough to be fatal. You hadn't hit any arteries.
You slammed the heel of your hand into her nose, aiming upwards. You felt cartridge crunching.
She screamed again and scrambled away as quickly as she could with her injured leg.
Blood was running into her mouth, and when she snarled at you, her teeth were red.
You smiled again, as cheerful as a choir girl.
"Had enough?"
She spat blood at your feet.
You waited, half your attention on the other two. They hadn't yet moved to help her. You weren't sure if it was out of fear of letting Blondie go, or just a strong self preservation instinct.
Green eyes finally gave in. Or more accurately, her leg did. She buckled and fell, knees smacking hard on the tile. You winced.
She looked pale, in the about to pass out sort of way.
You sighed and jerked your head at her.
"Get her to the second floor nurses office. Wrap something around her leg. Tight. She’ll live but it's going to hurt a whole lot more if you aren't quick about it."
The other two were looking between you and her, eyes wide.
You wiped the back of your hand across your mouth, still holding the bloody shiv.
That seemed to decide them. They let go of Blondie all at once and grabbed their boss under the arms. Between the two of them, they were able to drag her out.
She left a trail of bright red behind.
When they were gone, you sat on the closest bench, holding your ribs. Hopefully they weren’t cracked - it hurt to breathe. You'd have to visit the infirmary as soon as things died down.
"She’s going to get even with you," Blondie said.
He was watching you. He hadn't moved. Blood was still running in thin streams down his cheek, like he was crying red.
"Yep. She's got a lot of friends too. It's not going to be fun."
"Why do you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Act so light hearted about everything. I can see your hands shaking."
You balled them into fists and avoided looking at him. The silence stretched.
Finally, "Why did you really kill your neighbour?"
"I didn't like his face."
"I don't believe you."
"Believe what you want. The court already made up its mind."
He finally moved. Picked up his baton and slipped it into his belt. Grabbed a towel and balled it up, then pressed it against his face. The white started spotting red almost immediately. You watched him from the corner of your eye.
"Give me the knife."
"It's called a shiv. You should know that."
You rubbed the handle against your pants, getting rid of any fingerprints. Redundant, given there were three witnesses who saw you stab another inmate. Old habits don't really die, you supposed.
You handed it to him without looking at his face.
He wrapped it in a smaller towel and stuck it in his belt.
You could hear faint sirens from beyond the door, and his radio was crackling with orders. The wardens seemed to be getting things under control.
"I'm throwing you in solitary. And then I'm requesting a transfer to another block."
"Aww shucks, I'll really miss you Blondie."
"Not a transfer for me, you idiot. A transfer for you. It won't stop her entirely. There's always a little bit of communication between the blocks, no matter how hard we try and prevent it. But it should give you some time to make friends of your own."
"I've never been very good at that."
"Maybe try being less sarcastic."
He grabbed your upper arm and pulled you to your feet. His grip was light, a formality more than anything.
"Why did you really save me?"
You couldn't look at him. You shrugged.
"It's like I said. You're the least terrible warden in here. Not a very high bar to be fair, but still."
He started towards the door and you followed.
There were officers coming down the corridor in full riot gear. He waved them down and thrust you towards one.
"Solitary. Protective custody."
"Why?"
Blondie didn't even hesitate. "Because she saved my life."
Tumblr media
Solitary wasn't so bad when the other option was tossing and turning on your bunk, just waiting for a knife to your ribs.
You'd almost call it relaxing. Your ribs were bandaged tight and the painkiller the doc gave you left you floating on a cloud of dope.
When you heard the footsteps pause outside your door, you didn't bother to get up.
Blondie didn't say anything for a long while. When he finally spoke, it was so soft that you had to strain to hear it.
"I still don't believe you. I don't think you're a cold blooded killer. I think that whatever happened between you and that man wasn't really brought before the court."
You sighed.
"Drop it Blondie."
"No."
Maybe it was the medicine or maybe it was the confession booth feeling of the half dark. Either way, you ended up giving away more than you intended.
"It doesn't matter. If the whole thing was public, it would only hurt people who've already been through enough."
"You had a reason for killing him."
"Yes."
"What?"
"I won't tell you. Won't tell anyone, ever. It's not my story to tell”
“You're in jail because of it. Who else could possibly have more to lose?"
"You'd be surprised."
It was his turn to sigh.
"I'm going to find out eventually, y'know."
"Have fun with that. Don't give yourself a headache."
He sighed and walked away.
You didn't see him again for half a year.
Tumblr media
They kept you in solitary a whole week. Long enough for your ribs to stop hurting and for the bruises to lighten. Long enough for green eyes to be processed and transferred further up-state. That was unusual, even if she was the one who instigated the riot. You had a feeling someone pulled some strings behind the scenes. And you had an even stronger feeling about who it must have been.
When you were finally out, you were assigned to a new block. Your stuff was already waiting for you in your new cell, your books and CDs and a new letter from B.
Won't be able to write for a while. I've got something important to work on. Hopefully I'll be back soon.
You couldn't ignore the way that stung. Without meaning to, you'd come to rely on their letters. A little reprieve from the life you were stuck with.
The new block wasn't too bad. You took Blondie's advice and made some friends. Tried to avoid fights as much as possible. If green eyes ever managed to convince someone to get even for her, they didn't go through with it.
Life was, if not good, then at least bearable. You tried ignoring the little nagging part of you that constantly wondered about both Blondie and B. Without either of them, you felt...emptier somehow. Lonely.
When a warden came to tell you that you had a visitor, your heart lurched. Your family didn't visit you much anymore. And you cut off your friends the day you got convicted - no need to draw them into your mess. Secretly, you hoped it was B. You had no clue what they looked like, but after six months without hearing from them, you were almost desperate.
You smoothed down your uniform before you stepped into the visitors' centre, your eyes sweeping the room for familiar faces.
You noticed him almost immediately. Blondie, his hair shaggy when it wasn’t gelled back and his usual uniform replaced by a flannel shirt and jeans. A man was sitting next to him, his pinstripe suit still neat and pressed despite it being late afternoon.
He didn't even give you time to say hello.
"This is Mark Lawrence. Your lawyer."
You squinted at the man, confused. He was clearly a cut or two above the overworked district attorney who'd handled your case.
"No he isn't. I haven't seen him before in my life."
He sighed, irritated. "Mark is the lawyer I hired to represent you when we go to court next month."
"...Why am I going to court next month?"
"To challenge the original ruling."
"Okay. Why?"
"Because I've found another witness to your case, one that didn't testify last time."
You felt like were slammed face first into a bucket of icy water. With rusted nails in it.
"Who?"
"The victim's daughter."
"No."
"Yes."
Your handcuffs rattled as your balled your hands into fists.
"She's just a kid. What she needs is to put the past behind her, not re-live every minute of it up on the witness stand. No. We're not doing this."
You glared at him and he met you straight on. The tension cracked.
The lawyer finally interjected.
"Knowing the full details of the case changes things dramatically. Your charge goes from first degree murder to manslaughter. We might be able to cut your sentence down to fifteen years or less, with time served contributing."
"No. I'm not putting that little girl up on the stand."
Blondie practically snarled. "Yes. You. Are."
"No. I'm. Not."
"She's so much older now! Practically a teenager. She can handle it. And besides, she said she's happy to do it."
"You spoke to her?!"
Could this day get any worse? Why the hell did he have to go and drag up old memories? It must have been just as unpleasant for the kid as it was for you.
"Yes. Myself and the original detective both."
"Why? Is this what you've been doing the past six months? Trying to overturn my sentence?"
He looked away from you for the first time, his ears turning red.
"Yes."
You leaned back in your chair, conflicted and confused more than anything else. You hated to admit it, but a part of really wanted this. Even if the chance was slim, even if it meant another round of dockets and cross questioning. You were tired of prison. You wanted your life back.
You watched the late afternoon sun reflecting off the ceiling.
"I want to talk to her first. And then...maybe."
"Deal." Blondie sounded immensely satisfied.
You kept watching the sun and half listening to the conversations around you.
"Why are you doing this for me Blondie?"
Your voice was awfully soft.
"I'm returning a favour."
Your eyes slid to the lawyer.
"Pretty damn expensive way to do it."
He smirked. "I prefer my method to yours. Requires a whole lot less stabbing."
Tumblr media
The kid came to visit you the next day. Blondie was right. She was almost a teenager. Did time really go by so fast?
You grinned at her.
"Hey kid. Sorry to drag you out to this place, but they don't let me out much."
"I bet."
She’d lost a lot of the baby fat from her cheeks and her dark eyes didn't have the haunted look you remembered so well.
"How's life with your aunt?"
"Great actually. The school is nice and we've got this Great Dane. And she isn't like... well, she isn't like my dad."
That made you happy. The kid deserved something good after everything she’d been through.
She broke in before you could keep asking questions.
"I want to do it. I want to testify against my father."
You paused, your smile fading. You could still hear her voice from that night, high and tinny and begging her dad to stop.
He hadn't stopped. He hadn't stopped beating his little girl until the moment you sunk a knife into his chest.
You swallowed, your mouth tasting like metal.
"Are you sure? It's not going to be easy."
She met your eyes. "I don't care. You saved me. I'm not going to let you rot in a place like this."
When she left, you couldn't help thinking about her eyes. The last time you saw her, she wouldn't even look at your face. Wouldn't say more than three words at a time.
The kid might never outrun her past, but she’d done a damn good job so far.
Tumblr media
You tried not to be too hopeful. Homicide was almost impossible to overturn.
You tried not to be too hopeful, but the lawyer Blondie hired clearly knew his stuff. He laid it all out in front the judge.
How you used to babysit the kid when her dad wasn't around. How the man used to get violent when he was drunk, but never hit the kid until that night.
How you heard the screaming and banged at his door for fifteen minutes.  How you broke in through a back window when it wouldn't stop.
How you found the girl half dead with her father standing over her. Still going at it.
How you grabbed a knife, just to try and threaten him, maybe bring him back to his senses.
How he attacked you. How you stabbed him and then kept stabbing him until he stopped moving.
How you bundled the kid off to her aunt and then called the cops on yourself.
The whole story this time. No pleading guilty and then sitting back down without another word. No half hearted defence by a state lawyer already over worked and underpaid. No half truths.
It took three weeks of court dates to get through the whole story, with witnesses and cross examination. By the time it was done, you wanted to wash your hands of the whole mess. Innocent or guilty, you just wanted to stop reliving that night.
The judge was a hard faced man who'd seen a thousand criminals come and go. You didn't have much hope for yourself when the bailiff told you to rise for the verdict.
"In the case of the state versus the accused, in regards to the appeal and additional information provided to the court, the court hereby considers this appeal to be..."
You felt your heart stutter. The last time you were in court listening to a verdict the outcome was a forgone conclusion.
"Granted."
You almost sat back down, your knees weak. There's no way. After all this time, were you really about to have your freedom back?
The judge continued, "The accused's sentence has been adjusted to account for time served. The original sentence of life imprisonment with the chance of parole after thirty years has been changed to immediate parole on strict assessment."
The judge looked at you, eyes maybe a little softer than they were before.
"This court will never condone murder, not even in defence of a child. But I think it's clear, young lady, that you've spent more than enough time behind bars."
Your lips felt numb. Your whole future changed in one sentence. In one afternoon. It was staggering.
"Thank you, your honour."
The bailiff read out a list of regulations to follow. Weekly check ins with both a parole officer and a state psychiatrist. No furthers run ins with the law, not even misdemeanours. If even one person close to you felt you were a threat, they could report it to the police and have you sent back to jail almost immediately. You were on house arrest until further notice. It was one of the strictest parole agreements you'd ever heard.
You didn't care if they told you to do a hundred push ups morning and evening. You were free again. You were going to behave like a damn saint for the rest of your days.
The only hiccup was when he mentioned the address that you were registered to stay at. You raised a brow at your lawyer but he avoided your eyes.
When court was finally dismissed, the first thing you did as a free woman was give Blondie a hug.
He was much taller than you, though you'd never realised it before.
"How much do I owe you? When I get a job, we can work out some kind repayment plan."
He waved you away and lead you from the courthouse. You tried to ask your lawyer about the house arrest, but he managed to slip away before you could.
His car was waiting for you. A new Camaro barely a year months old.
You let out a low whistle.
"She’s a beauty."
When you climbed into the passenger seat, you were sure to buckle your seat belt. No tickets for you, not ever.
The car started up with a thrumming purr.
It ate away at the road, even in the dense city centre. It wasn't long before you were almost at the city limits and cruising.
"By the way, do you know where I'll be staying? I didn't recognise the address."
You couldn't be sure, but it seemed like his hands tightened on the steering wheel just a tad.
"Mm-hmm. You're staying with me."
What? You couldn't possibly do that to him.
"Thank you. But don't you feel a little awkward having a felon in your home? I've still got my savings from before. I can rent my own place for a little."
"You're staying with me. Do you know how hard it is to get a good apartment with a criminal record?"
"I guessed as much. But Blondie, I already owe you. I can't possibly intrude on your life. Maybe you think you still owe me from that day. You don't. We're square."
He was quiet for a bit, but finally managed to force a smile into his voice.
"No. I'm not doing this because I feel indebted to you."
He kept his eyes on the road, his hand loose and confident on the wheel. His sleeves were rolled up again and you got your first good look at his tattoos. They were a collection of really well done pieces, each small tattoo blending with the others. Mostly fine line work, simple and clean.
"Why are you doing it then?"
He didn't answer.
When you arrived, his house was ranch style three bedroom with a huge, rolling yard and a neat wraparound porch.
You let out another low whistle.
"How do you afford this on a correction officer's salary?"
"I don't. It's paid off already. I was in the USMC for a long time. The money was good."
"I knew you weren't a normal civvie."
He grinned. "What gave it away?"
"The muscles."
He laughed and pulled your duffel bag from the trunk.
You'd told your parents to donate all your clothes when you were first sentenced. You didn't think you'd ever be free again so why hoard? Someone out there was probably making good use of your Doc Martens and distressed denim. Whatever normal clothes you currently had were what you were locked up with. The outfit on your back and little else.
The suitcase was instead filled with your meagre prison possessions, the stuff you didn't want to leave behind. Your collection of books. Some postcards. The CDs that B sent you.
Blondie carried it across the lawn like it weighed nothing at all.
Stepping into his house was a surreal experience. You hadn't been inside someone else's home since the night of your crime. Your last few years were exclusive to the grimy and outdated rooms of state buildings.
It was like stepping back in time. Or more accurately, like stepping into a future you thought was lost to you.
Clean, without the tang of cheap, industrial grade bleach. The walls painted and wallpapered instead of just whitewashed. The feeling of finally being somewhere you could relax. Not an in-between place.
Home.
He showed you to your room, a neat guest bedroom across from his, with a double bed and wide windows.
You didn't sit down on the bed or on the neat desk chair. You didn't feel clean enough. You still felt the stink and grime of prison clinging to you.
He raised a brow but showed you where the bathroom was.
It was another taste of freedom. Showers in prison were monitored and timed affairs. No standing under the water and just enjoying the heat, no taking the time to scrub and exfoliate. In and out and done as quick as possible.
You stood under the hot water for a long time, your face wet not just from the spray.
When you finally climbed out, you felt clean for the first time in years.
Blondie was gone when you got downstairs, a hasty note scrawled on the fridge about grabbing you some new clothes. You tilted your head at the handwriting. You could swear it looked so familiar... But no, it couldn't be. That was ridiculous.
You brewed yourself a hot drink, fully intending to sit on the porch and enjoy it. Like a little old woman.
The backdoor was locked.
You frowned. Okay, not that uncommon. Folk kept their doors locked all the time. He probably intended you to use the front door instead.
But that one was locked too.
So were all the downstairs windows. Closed shut with little hatches you hadn't noticed earlier.
You tried not to panic. He was probably just looking out for you. Being careful. You were still a felon. How did he know you weren't going to make a break for it the second you could, his tv and laptop in tow?
It was fine. You were fine. You could just drink at the table and wait for him to get home. You kept telling yourself that, even as you searched through the kitchen drawers for a spare key.
Nothing.
You didn't want to panic. You'd spent years locked away. Wasn't this much nicer than a cell?
No. Because at least in a cell you had no illusions about your freedom.
You ended up in his bedroom without knowing when you'd gotten there. You didn't dig through his drawers. He'd know instantly. But you did open them all, one by one, as if you'd find the key right on top of his neatly folded shirts.
You found the letters in the last drawer. The one right next to his bed, like he read them every night.
It took you a while to recognise them, even though you were looking at your own handwriting.
Your letters to B. Every single one of them. The envelopes neatly cut open and the letters themselves stacked in chronological order. The most recent one was at the very top and you picked it up with numb hands.
Hey B! Guess who's going back to court. Guess they missed seeing me strutting down the aisle.
Don't worry. I haven't down anything bad (at least not this time). Someone who thinks they owe me a favour has gotten it into their head that the best way to repay me is to get me out of jail.
The legal way, that is. No midnight tunnels or disguises. (Boo. How boring. What happened to romance?)
I don't have much hope, but at least it means a break in the monotony. And nicer chow.
You'd better write me soon. Can't believe I'm admitting this out loud, but I get a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart whenever I get a new letter from you. I think it must be acid reflux.
-your favourite felon.
B did, in fact, write back quickly. For the last time - no return address on the letter. In that, and in so many other ways, it was clear it was the final letter you were getting.
You're the most complicated person I've ever met. Caring and kind but somehow wrapped up in the most sarcastic personality. I've fallen in love with you. Stupid. Incredibly stupid. But it's true.
I love you.
-B
You'd sat in your cell with your eyes almost bugging out of your skull. Wondering what B did to have the misfortune of falling for a girl like you. Wondering if you could have loved them back, if given the chance. Wondering who they really were.
Well, here was your answer. B, the person who wrote you sarcastic poetry and hunted down your favourite books, was Blondie, the warden who owed you his life.
And he was in love with you.
You sat down, knees replaced by lunch time jelly cups.
No wonder he did what he did. No wonder he paid for an attorney and got your house arrest registered at his house. No wonder he kept the doors and windows locked.
There was a light step behind you and you flew to your feet, the letter still clutched in your fist.
He was standing in the doorway, watching you with cool blue eyes.
"So. You found them."
You couldn't answer.
He stepped into the room, his eyes never leaving yours. He'd taken off his shirt and stood in only his tank top and jeans, his arms lean with muscle. You'd spent years fighting and you knew in one glance that you could never take him. He was stronger. Had years of Marine and police training. It had taken three prisoners and a razor blade to finally hold him. What chance did you have?
"The world isn't built for prisoners. Rehabilitation is hard. What were the stats again? Eight out of every ten end up back in jail before ten years is up?"
He continued towards you, as calm as ever.
"You're safer here. With me. You said you'd be a great housewife remember?"
"I was joking," you managed. "Just kidding around."
He reached you and gently took the letter from your unresisting fingers.
"I won't make you do anything you don't want to. But you're not leaving me. You're not leaving this house."
"Why?"
He smiled, that half smile that gave you a glimpse past his tough guy shell. This time, you didn't like what you saw.
"You know why."
"I'm a terrible person to love. I'm prickly and sarcastic and I suck at doing the dishes."
"I've got a dishwasher."
"All I know how to cook is fried chicken."
He wrinkled his nose. "We'll work on it."
"I snore all night."
"You don't. I've watched you sleep."
"Really?"
"Really. I'd stop outside your cell and just watch you sometimes. I couldn't help it. You're so much calmer when you sleep. It's like seeing another version of you."
He tilted his head and closed the last bit of distance between you, until you could smell his cologne and see the flecks of green in his eyes. You'd never noticed them before.
"There are worse cells than this, aren't there? All you have to do is stay with me. Be happy. Let me love you."
"Do I have a choice?"
He smiled that secret smile again.
"Nope. It's either me or straight back to prison."
It was true. He was a model citizen – a veteran with a clean record as a corrections officer. Even if you did talk to your mandated psychologist or parole officer, they wouldn’t believe you. You’d be the ungrateful prisoner trying to manipulate her way out of house arrest.
You knew it from the start. Rule one - never trust a warden. They never have your best interests at heart. All they want is to cover their own skin and get theirs.
But, you never were very good at following the rules, were you?

don’t like it, don’t read.
“she’s doing it again,” sunghoon grumbled, walking into heeseung’s bedroom. only because the door was ajar, though. he knew the sight he’d walk in on if it was completely closed would be worse than what you were surely doing.
heeseung snickered, eyes fixed on his computer. “what’s the occasion? sixth-month gooning anniversary?”
sunghoon scoffed. he didn’t know why you did it. he thought jake was bad, but you were next level. “i thought surely she would give us a break for november.”
“and she did,” heeseung quipped, moving his mouse. “for all of three days.”
that was true. for the very first three days of november, the house had been relatively quiet apart from heeseung’s shouting when he was losing. then, on the fourth day, it was back to hearing your annoyingly perfect fucking moans in the afternoon.
and god forbid your parents would be coming home late. you were relentless on those days, touching yourself to no end. sunghoon couldn’t stand it. he hated minding his business, trying to rest or work or do anything that didn’t require thinking about the sounds you were making as you persistently edged yourself.
but he couldn’t help himself. sometimes, he could hear your moans even when you weren’t there, and that was when he knew he was finally losing what little bit was left of his goddamn mind.
heeseung, on the other hand, didn’t seem as miffed. sunghoon was certain his brother could hear the noises you were making down the hall, but he was sitting here without a care in the world, typing an email to his professor of all things. which made no sense to sunghoon, considering he knew how much heeseung liked noisy sex.
“okay, i’ll bite,” sunghoon said, crossing his arms. “how in the hell are you okay with this?”
heeseung shrugged, trying and failing to suppress a smirk. he was well aware of the fact that sunghoon always got worked up when it came to you, which was fair. you were the biggest minx this world had ever known. “well, first of all,” heeseung started, snickering again. “there’s a thing called jerking off. i’m sure you’ve heard of it. it’s really popular amongst guys we know.”
sunghoon looked almost scandalized. “i’m not jerking off to my stepsister.”
“then, you’re an idiot,” heeseung retorted. “she’s given us enough material until new years. of the year after next.”
“it’s wrong.”
heeseung rolled his eyes. “you’ve got such a stick up your ass, like a proper princess or something.”
“i’ll beat your ass, hee,” sunghoon warned.
heeseung threw his hands up. “i’m just saying. i’m not telling you to stick her in a washing machine, bro. but the answer’s obvious. just jerk off. you know you want to.”
sunghoon sighed. had he thought about it? obviously. but he couldn’t shake how wrong it felt, even if you made him perpetually horny. “i want to smack the shit out of you right now, but i haven’t done it yet.”
rather than recoil, heeseung laughed. that asswipe finds humor in everything, sunghoon thought to himself, irritated. “and i commend your patience, man,” heeseung replied. “but it’s only making you more frustrated when you could just bust a nut and be happy.”
sunghoon was thinking about it now. well, he had thought about it countless times, but he had never allowed himself to stoop that low. you were his younger stepsister and it was his responsibility to take care of you. not picture your face as you moaned and imagine how you would feel, tight and sticky and creamy as you wrapped around his…
heeseung broke the silence, musing more so to himself, “maybe we should put her in the washing machine.”
sunghoon’s eyes flickered. “what the hell, man?”
“my bad,” heeseung replied, although he didn’t look very apologetic. “i was just thinking out loud.”
fuck, now sunghoon was picturing that too. your house had one of those washing machines that opened from the top, not the front. too many times had sunghoon seen you struggle to take your clothes out, dangling over the washing machine and nearly falling inside. he would offer to help, every now and then, but he liked watching you climb the washing machine just to get your clothes from the very bottom.
it was much more realistic for you to get stuck in it then the kinds of washing machines in porn.
heeseung broke the silence again, still thinking. it was his greatest skill and simultaneously his worst habit. “if you’re so against it, why haven’t you just asked her to shut the fuck up then?”
that was a good question. sunghoon wasn’t the kind of guy to shy away from an altercation, not with friends and not with family. he had certainly never shown heeseung any mercy. he loved his brother, but he was annoying as all fuck.
“i see,” heeseung said, smirking. see, annoying. “it’s because you don’t really want her to stop.”
sunghoon sighed. “yeah, fine. i don’t want her to stop. happy?”
heeseung burst out laughing. always laughing, always scheming. he was going to get a stocking full of coal for christmas. “i have an idea.”
“oh, god,” sunghoon groaned.
heeseung finally pressed send on his email and turned around in his desk chair. “hear me out. we should fuck her.”
sunghoon gawked in disbelief. then again, none of heeseung’s ideas were ever truly brilliant. “you’re insane,” he murmured.
“thanks,” heeseung chirped, the insult rolling off his shoulders. “just sleep on it.”
“you know what? sure,” sunghoon replied, walking out of his brother’s room and shutting the door. he didn’t want to hear another word.
he went about his day like everything was normal, going on a walk so that he didn’t have to hear you, eating dinner and watching netflix in the living room to ignore the fact that you existed altogether. and then he went to bed.
sunghoon couldn’t fucking sleep. on it, over it, under it. he couldn’t sleep whatsoever.
it wasn’t like you were just loudly moaning all day long, that would be absurd. but every now and then, there would be a whimper you’d let slip. sunghoon could tell that you were actually trying to be quiet. but this was one of those nights where your parents wouldn’t be back and you were taking advantage of that. again.
sunghoon decided that he was at his breaking point. the need for you was too goddamn strong and he was tired of pretending that he was better. he couldn’t ignore it anymore. he couldn’t fight it, suppress it.
he threw the blankets off his bed and went to heeseung’s room, the door closed this time. he knocked on the door and called out, “stop jerking off and get your ass out here.”
sunghoon heard a groan, one of the disgruntled sort. a few seconds later, heeseung opened the door, a scowl on his face. “what the hell, man? your voice ruined my nut.”
it was sunghoon’s turn to laugh. he clasped a hand on heeseung’s shoulder. “don’t worry. you’ll be in the mood again in no time.”
heeseung lifted a brow. “are you saying what i think you’re saying?”
sunghoon nodded.
“we’re gonna teach her a lesson.”
“we’re gonna put her in the washing machine?”
sunghoon’s smile instantly dropped and his hand fell from heeseung’s shoulder. “why the fuck are you both so addicted to porn?” he asked.
the excited shimmer in heeseung’s eyes died a little. “no, i was… i was just kidding. let’s go.”
sunghoon sighed and started down the hall to your bedroom, deciding not to argue heeseung on that. it would be a waste of valuable time.
sunghoon knocked on the door and called out your name. “can we come in?”
there was audible shuffling as you called back, “just a moment!”
heeseung glanced over at sunghoon. “so, how we doing this?”
sunghoon looked calm, collected. as if fucking his stepsister was something he did on the regular. “just follow my lead.”
you opened the door, a towel thrown around you. but your skin looked damp with sweat, not water. your face was a little flushed. it was obvious that you were naked. “um, can i help you guys?” you asked, somewhat breathless.
sunghoon looked you up and down subtly. heeseung, on the other hand, was damn near ogling you. the former repeated, “can we come in?”
“um, i guess,” you murmured, stepping out of the way so that they could enter your bedroom.
heeseung closed the door behind himself, not that there was anyone to worry about. it was only the three of you in the house at the moment.
sunghoon glanced away, looking for traces of what you had been doing. he found them very quickly; your laptop shut on your bed, the blankets messily thrown on top to conceal the damp spots in your sheets, and your shirt and shorts on the floor by your bed, implying you were only in your underwear.
“is there something you guys need?” you asked, a bit annoyed at having been interrupted.
sunghoon walked towards your desk where your laptop probably should have been, though he saw something fearful flash in your eyes. his brows furrowed, but he didn’t inquire about it. he would figure it out on his own. “do we have to need something to want to visit you?” sunghoon asked, a small smile on his face. “i haven’t seen you all day long. we just wanted to make sure you’re still alive.”
“oh, that’s… very sweet of you,” you murmured. “as you can see, i’m perfectly alive and breathing.”
“yeah, you’re breathing a lot,” heeseung commented.
sunghoon chuckled. he moved away from your desk and instead towards your nightstand, noticing your eyes still watching him like a hawk. “relax. what’s got you so worked up?”
“i’m not worked up,” you lied, eyes darting between him and your bed.
that was when it clicked in sunghoon’s brain. the bed. you didn’t want him to see the bed. he chuckled again, sitting down on top of it. “are you okay? you look a little… flushed.”
“yeah,” heeseung chimed in, moving your hair out of your face. you jolted. you had been paying so much attention to sunghoon that you failed to notice heeseung had creeped up behind you. “and sweaty.”
you released a shaky breath. you were nervous, but you couldn’t tell them that. because then they would start asking questions. “i’m okay, guys. you can go.”
“why are you trying to get rid of us?” heeseung asked, leaning in a little too close. “it’s almost like you’re hiding something.”
“what are you watching?” sunghoon asked, grabbing your laptop.
your eyes widened in horror. “no, wait!” you exclaimed. you tried to stop him, but heeseung was quick to pull you back against his chest.
sunghoon opened your laptop, being met with a twitter porn browser. he feigned surprise. “oh, wow,” he said, merely blinking. “wow.”
“what is it?” heeseung called from the other side of the room.
sunghoon turned the laptop to face you and heeseung. “guess she’s really into… creampies, sucking dick, and doggy style.”
your face was hot with embarrassment and you thrashed in heeseung’s arms. “this is an invasion of privacy! you guys jerk off, don’t you?”
“jerk off? sure. watch porn for hours on end? no, i don’t,” sunghoon answered, setting your laptop down. he moved your blankets out of the way, revealing a few damp spots on your bed. “how long did you have to sit here for this to happen?”
you felt very exposed at the moment. like your deepest, darkest secret was steadily reaching its way around the whole world. “i’m not that bad,” you murmured, shy.
heeseung laughed. he tugged at the towel and brought his hand to your chest, pinching your nipple. “not that bad? you almost gave poor sunghoon over there an aneurysm with how enticing you’ve been.”
your whined when heeseung squeezed your chest, tearing your gaze away from sunghoon to look up at him with wide eyes. “what are you doing?”
“fuck. yeah, that’s what i’m talking about, princess,” heeseung groaned, pressing himself against your ass. “those sweet sounds have been driving him mad.”
any other moment, sunghoon would have narrowed his eyes at heeseung and called him disgusting. but this was different. sunghoon didn’t care about what was right or wrong anymore. maybe he never truly had. what was certain right now was that any desire to behave in a morally acceptable manner was outweighed by the desire to fuck you brainless.
“bring her over here,” sunghoon said, shoving your laptop of the way to make room.
heeseung grabbed your waist and led you towards the bed, pushing you towards his brother. sunghoon grabbed your chin, smoothing his thumb over your cheek. “gooning isn’t healthy,” he told you straightforwardly. “you know what you need?”
you glanced at him, fretful. the towel had completely fallen at this point, leaving you solely in your water, just as sunghoon had pieced together. “what?” you whispered.
“a fuck,” sunghoon replied unabashedly. “you’re so damn touch-starved. always complaining about how you want a boyfriend, but you never go out, because you’re too busy playing with your clit.”
your face was hot. honestly, they hadn’t given you the opportunity to cool down. but you had to admit that he was right. compared to how much you touched yourself, you didn’t go out enough.
“have you ever even had sex?” heeseung asked, running his hands up your thighs.
you wanted to hide so fucking bad, but that clearly wasn’t an option. “no,” you replied, ashamed.
sunghoon snickered, because apparently that was funny. “obviously,” he said, moving his thumb to your bottom lip. “this pretty body has gone untouched for too many years, that’s all. once you get fucked, you’ll be as good as new. worked for jake. didn’t it, hee?”
“yep,” heeseung chirped, nodding. “he was the biggest gooner i’ve ever seen. jay had so many roommate horror stories. then, we got him some pussy, and he’s all better now. actually goes outside and gets light that isn’t from his laptop.”
“so, what do you say?” sunghoon asked, turning your head back to him. “want something other than your fingers inside you?”
your heart racing. were you really about to agree to getting fucked by your stepbrothers? when it was over, you could blame it on the fact that you genuinely were touch-starved and desperate for a release for all this pent-up frustration.
and because you really, really needed to come after having avoided it for hours, you nodded your head.
“words, princess,” heeseung said, his hands still gripping your thighs as he thought about how soft they were. “say it. say, ‘i want you to fuck me, heeseung.’”
you swallowed, but you weren’t going to disobey. “i… i want you to fuck me, heeseung.”
“jeez, you don’t have to beg. i’ll do it,” heeseung replied, playful as ever. “and because it’s your first time, i think we should do missionary. is that okay, princess?”
“that’s… fine,” you murmured timidly. it didn’t really matter to you how he fucked you. you just wanted someone inside you.
heeseung was beaming, like he had prayed for this day and it was finally happening. “good. and if you ever want me to fuck you on all fours, you know the way to my room.”
the way heeseung was looking at you was entirely overwhelming, so you glanced over at sunghoon instead, though he was also watching you intently. “what about… you?” you asked.
sunghoon chuckled, thumb sweeping over your lips. “i don’t need to fuck your pussy. i’ll leave that to heeseung. i just want to fuck this pretty little mouth that’s been keeping me up at night.”
heeseung, growing impatient, tugged at your panties. you lifted your hips, watching him drag them down your legs. “jesus,” he murmured. “they’re fucking drenched.”
“they better be,” sunghoon replied with a chuckle, stepping out of his pants. “long as she’s probably been wearing them.”
heeseung spread your legs, wanting to get a good look at the treasure hidden between them. he moaned at the mere sight of your pussy, dripping with arousal. “fuck, you don’t even need prep,” he mused.
as if you couldn’t get any more embarrassed than you already were. they knew exactly what to say to make you want to hide your face beneath a pillow and hopefully suffocate to death.
despite his declaration about you not needing prep, heeseung couldn’t help but drag his tongue along your folds, which made you gasp in surprise. it wasn’t a tentative lick, either; he was confident and unreluctant. you were clearly sensitive, but he didn’t seem to care, eager to suck and lick at you.
“heeseung,” you whimpered, involuntarily trying to close your legs. he swore his dick twitched when you said his name like that.
all the while, sunghoon was stroking himself beside you, half hard. for the first time thinking about you at the same time that he touched his dick, and god, he really should have done it sooner. just the thought of you made his blood pump harder.
heeseung pulled back after a moment or two when he was finally sated. “sorry,” he apologized, completely inauthentic. “just wanted a taste.”
sunghoon tapped your cheek. “open up, baby.”
you slowly opened your mouth, wide enough for him to push inside. which sunghoon seized the opportunity to do as soon as it presented itself. he was impatient now, tired of waiting. you had tortured him long enough with those pretty noises; it was time you paid him back for tolerating your horniness.
“fuck,” sunghoon cursed upon feeling the warmth of your mouth around his cock.
heeseung snickered. it was amusing to him that only a few hours ago, sunghoon said he was insane for suggesting that they fuck you. and now here he was with his cock down your throat. a few hours could truly change a man, for worse and for better. “how’s it going?” heeseung asked.
sunghoon closed his eyes, trying to go slow before he started fucking your throat with a purpose. he didn’t necessarily want to hurt you, but damn, he was getting pretty damn close. “how do you think?” he retorted.
you watched sunghoon as he slowly moved inside your mouth, though his patience was obviously dwindling by the second. part of you wanted to see what it would look like when he lost it all, but the other dreaded it, uncertain whether or not you could handle it.
you were still a virgin, after all. in the important and unimportant ways. you had never been fucked. you had most certainly never had your throat fucked until this very moment. the furthest you’d ever gone with a boy was a little bit of groping while kissing and even that was awkward.
heeseung licked his lips, appreciating that they were coated in your arousal. “taste so good, princess,” he said, dropping his hands down to his shorts.
you would have gawked when you glanced down and noticed the dent in them, even if it weren’t for the fact that your mouth was preoccupied. when did he get so hard?
heeseung started to undress himself, pleased now that he had gotten a taste of you and eager to be inside you. he was quick to shed his shorts and the layer underneath, unafraid to show just how desperate he was. for him, it was easy to accept his attraction to you and even easier to act on it now that he had your consent.
he climbed onto the bed, grabbing your thighs again and spreading them apart. he gave them a few affectionate, departing kisses and sat up to grab his cock, bringing it between them. “say ‘goofer gooner’ if you’re ready,” heeseung joked, knowing you couldn’t speak.
you furrowed your brows, but you couldn’t even focus on his nonsense because sunghoon was noticeably forgoing all restraint. could you blame him? your mouth was warm, alive, and everything about you seemed to drive him straight through the brink of insanity.
“you know, sunghoon,” heeseung started, gazing down at the little distance between your bodies. “you were right. i’m already in the mood again.”
you had that effect on him, on them. heeseung knew he probably should have fought it better, but he truly saw no point. it was easier to fold and surrender to the fact that he found you infuriatingly sexy, despite your tendencies. and with nothing more to say, he slowly but surely pressed himself inside you.
heeseung tipped his head back, already moaning like a bitch and he wasn’t even fully sheathed inside you yet. “holy fuck,” he said, his grip on your thighs tightening.
you whimpered, the sound muffled by sunghoon’s cock as his balls slapped against your chin. you immediately pulsed around heeseung’s cock, clinging to him like now that he was there, you would never let him go.
“holy fuck,” heeseung moaned again, stopping for a moment as if the breath had been completely sucked out of him. “so fucking wet, my dick just slides in.”
he was damn near flabbergasted. maybe there was benefit to you gooning for hours on end, a benefit that he got to reap. he had never seen anyone this wet before, much less felt anything this wet, and it was taking a toll on him. his head was already reeling.
“okay,” heeseung said, more so to himself. he was adjusting. “okay. fuck. i’m gonna move.”
and he did, growing more and more mesmerized with every thrust of his hips. his mouth hung open, moans of your name and explicit curses dangling from his lips with a shrill touch to them that only made you even more aroused.
to say nothing of the sounds sunghoon was making, almost directly in your ear. he was so close to your face that you could explode. he was finally moving comfortably, fucking your throat with a rhythm that almost made it hard to breathe.
though you had no intention of making him stop. you had fantasized about making yourself available for this purpose many, many times. not necessarily to your stepbrother, but well, it wasn’t like you were discriminating. especially not when he sounded so goddamn sexy and his face was tensing the way it was in pleasure.
it was strange, but you found yourself going from solely craving the experience to wanting to pleasure them. and it would appear that you were doing a fantastic job without hardly even trying, all things considered.
heeseung was gripping on your thighs for dear life as if without the support, he would get blown away into the eighth dimension. or maybe drown in how wet you were, gushing around his cock, if not for him using your soft thighs as an anchor to keep him afloat.
“this sweet fucking pussy,” he sighed, losing himself in the vice of you. he had set a pace too, fucking you without intention of stopping. with every fiber of his being, deep and hard. “i could fuck you forever.”
you could sit here and take it forever. you had never felt so full in your life. your fingers hardly did the job, always reaching just shy of where you needed them instead of completely offering you the satisfaction you’d long craved. and here heeseung was handing it to you on a silver platter.
the only problem was that you felt slightly overwhelmed with so much happening at one time in two different holes. you didn’t know who to pay attention to; sunghoon fucking your throat with a vengeance, eager to gain something out of your mouth for once, or heeseung railing you to kingdom come, making you feel hot everywhere.
you found yourself trying to juggle both, eyes flitting between them, moaning around sunghoon’s dick at heeseung’s angled thrusts and throbbing around heeseung at every guttural groan that slipped from sunghoon’s mouth. you couldn’t help yourself; it was too goddamn arousing.
sunghoon noticed how fucked out you looked, eyes rolling back to another timeline, and it was doing unimaginable things to his cock. you looked better than he could have ever imagined and he knew that he wouldn’t be satisfied until he left you hoarse and rasping.
with that thought, he grabbed your hair to push you down and started to fuck your head against the mattress rather roughly, which caught you by surprise. you tried to take it, you really did, but it was overwhelming. you could barely breathe.
“take it,” he hissed, holding your head in place. you looked pretty like this, struggling to keep up with his hectic movements.
your eyes were watering as his cock went too deep for you to handle, and you started gagging. sunghoon moaned, but pulled your head off him to let you relax for a second, a string of saliva connecting your mouth and the head of his cock.
“breathe,” he said, letting one hand run through your hair almost tenderly.
you nodded, willing yourself to relax. all the while, sunghoon marveled at how pretty you looked with saliva on your face and tears strolling down your cheeks.
“you guys okay up there?” heeseung asked from between your legs, having noticed the action.
“we’re fine,” sunghoon answered on your behalf. he moved his hand from your hair to your cheek. “you ready?”
you nodded your head. you couldn’t shake the urge to really make him proud, to satisfy all his inappropriate cravings. it was the least you could do when you had been tantalizing him for months on end.
“good girl,” sunghoon whispered, guiding his cock back to your mouth and this time using your hair to push your head onto his cock as he fucked your throat.
you moaned at the pet name, because something about the way it sounded coming from him made your head spin. maybe you were just horny and in dire need of a fuck like he’d said. maybe after you came, all of these feelings would wear off, and you would feel somewhat sane again.
but you couldn’t deny that you were somewhat indulging in your fantasies here. you didn’t necessarily hate the the way sunghoon was treating you, even if it was a little beyond your limits and more than a little rough. but limits were just boundaries you’d yet explored.
heeseung was a different situation altogether. your pussy was still sensitive from the hours of playing with it and you were already about to come much before him. there was a familiar heat in your stomach and festering throb of energy in your core, only more intense than you had ever experienced.
but heeseung recognized it, even without being able to hear your sweet moans of his name. he could see it in your body language and it flattered him in a way; he always felt proud when he lasted longer than the person he was fucking, especially without necessarily even trying to finish them quicker.
“she’s gonna come,” heeseung pointed out, grinning. “come for me, princess. come on this dick. you know you want to.”
it was like he your voodoo doll or something, because merely seconds after those words parted from his mouth, you were shuddering and tightening around his cock with climax, your eyes rolling to the back of your head and your toes clenching.
heeseung let out the pitchiest moan ever when you throbbed around him repeatedly. words could not describe how good it felt, but sounds could. and the sounds he was making were sensational, only contributing to the mind-numbing pleasure wrecking you from within.
“goddamn,” heeseung said, mesmerized by how hard you came. it was probably warranted after hours of resisting.
but the other thing on heeseung’s mind was how much wetter your pussy sounded, sticky with your release. he whined, literally going mad. he knew that his own orgasm wasn’t far out and just the squelch of your cunt could easily finish him off.
sunghoon was facing a similar predicament, fucking your mouth without restraint and not letting you escape his thrusts. “fuck, i’m gonna come,” he groaned. “swallow it. or don’t. it’s your sheets.”
the last thing you of all people cared about was having your sheets ruined. at the moment, you were more burdened with how sore your throat felt and how overstimulated your pussy was being fucked despite having already orgasmed. it literally felt like you’d had the soul fucked out of you.
you didn’t even know it was possible at this point, but sunghoon’s hips went faster. it was a brutal but steady pace, which was somewhat admirable. he was trying to get himself there, right over the edge, knowing release was only seconds away.
with a few more smacks, sunghoon released down your throat with the sexiest groan you’d heard, one that claimed every award. when you’d milked him of every drop, his hands tight on the sides of your face, his grip on your head slacked and he slowly pulled your mouth off him.
you swallowed what you could, but he had came so goddamn much at once, it was borderline ridiculous. what you couldn’t take dripped down your chin, blending with the saliva from the messy fucking.
heeseung glanced up at you and the sight of your cum-stained face triggered something so primal in him that he knew he wasn’t going to last another minute. “princess, where do you want me to come?” he asked breathlessly.
“inside,” you replied with maybe half your voice, if even. it hurt to speak. the sound pleased sunghoon.
the thought of coming inside your pussy had heeseung levitating and was the last push he needed to bring himself past the cusp of ecstasy. his hips stuttered as he came inside you, crying out half of your name, leaning on top of you as he buried his load inside your warm, wet, gushing, sticky hole.
a satisfied hum escaped you when you felt his cum seeping inside your pussy. why did it feel so good?
“d-don’t move yet,” you whispered, because it was all you could muster.
heeseung glanced up at you, recognizing the look of pleasure on your face. if he had the energy, he would tease you about how you wanted to feel him cum inside you, but he needed to catch his breath. so he answered with a nod.
sunghoon whistled. this had gone better than he’d hoped. “well goddamn. you’re just a virgin slut aren’t you?”
heeseung chuckled breathlessly. “she took that shit like a champ. i’m impressed.”
sunghoon kissed your forehead. “you did so good,” he whispered, caressing your cheek with his thumb. “i’ll get you some water in a second.”
you nodded, appreciating the tender side after all that had just happened. your heart felt a little lighter than usual, despite its racing. you had so many questions, but you didn’t want to strain your voice. was it normal to feel like a different person after having sex for the first time?
heeseung was going to pull out, but seeing the look on your face, he decided to stay nestled inside you for a little longer. “you okay?”
you bobbed your head. “i’m good.”
heeseung snickered and teased, “whoa there, batman. what have you done with my sister?”
you rolled your eyes, but giggled. sunghoon joined in on the laughter, but he added, “don’t speak. you’ll make it worse.”
heeseung sighed contentedly. knowing that you wouldn’t say anything in response, he decided to tease, “our little gooner.”
you glared at heeseung wordlessly, conveying a lot of different things with your eyes.
sunghoon translated playfully, “i think that means ‘fuck you.’”
“again?” heeseung joked. “what can i expect from a gooner. but hey, i guess girls can goon too.”

"Fushiguro, that's your girl?" One of Toji's block mates asks, eyeing one of the many pictures Toji had of you taped to the slate gray brick wall. It was a simple picture, your hair was wavy in this one, a cute dimply smile, lashes curled as you looked all natural. But god, were you still stunning. Toji looks up from the thing he was doing, sitting in the steel chair that was bolted down to the floor.
"Yup, that's my ol' lady," looking up at the picture he can't help but proudly smile. Toji's wall is covered in pictures. Of you, of Megumi. The whole family. Cute pictures you took with each other before he got locked up. It was his motivation to stay straight while being inside. To remind him of what's waiting for him when he gets out.
The block mate lets out a low whistle, nodding approvingly as he leans back against the cold wall. “Damn. She bad.” His celly's eyes roam over the pictures. Ones where you're dressed up all pretty, makeup done perfectly. Ones where you're wrapped around one of Toji's arms, looking up at him with all the adoration in the world. Even the ones that show just a little too much, which Toji keeps right next to where he lays his head.
Toji chuckles, shaking his head. “Watch it.” There’s no real threat in his voice, but there’s an edge of warning that makes the other guy hold his hands up in surrender.
“Ain’t mean no disrespect, Fushiguro,” he says, still looking at the pictures. “Just sayin’. You lucky.”
Toji doesn’t need to be told that. He already knows. It’s what gets him through the long nights, the endless hum of fluorescent lights, the hostility of the barbed wire that separates him from the outside. Knowing you're out there, waiting, is the only thing that keeps him from losing his damn mind.
He leans back against the desk he sits in front of, arms folding across his broad chest, eyes fixed on the pictures. His ol’ lady. His girl. His anchor in a life that never gave him much stability.
A slow smirk tugs at his lips. He can still hear your voice, that soft, teasing lilt whenever you’d call him by his full name just to mess with him. “Toji Fushiguro,” you’d say, dragging it out, pretending to scold him, even though your eyes always gave you away. He lived for those moments.
“Bet she writin’ you, huh?” the block mate asks. “You get letters?”
Toji nods. “Every week.” And he does. Neatly folded pages that smell like you, inked with words that remind him that he’s still human. That he’s still yours. That he still has something waiting for him beyond these walls. But god, does he miss you.
“Damn,” the block mate mutters, shaking his head in disbelief. “Every week? That’s real love right there.”
Toji just smirks again, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a folded piece of paper, edges worn from being opened and closed too many times. He doesn’t even need to read it again—he’s already memorized every damn wordbut still, he unfolds it, running a calloused thumb over the handwriting. Your handwriting.
Hey, baby. I know you hate when I get all mushy, but I don’t care. I miss you. I miss you so much it drives me crazy sometimes. But I’ll wait. However long it takes, I’ll wait. You better be eating, staying out of trouble, and keeping that smart-ass mouth in check. (Okay, maybe not too much. You know I love that about you.)
Toji chuckles to himself, shaking his head. Yeah, you knew him too damn well.
Megumi misses you too, even if he acts all tough about it. You should’ve seen his face when I told him your letter came. He’s just like you, y’know? Won’t say how he really feels, but it’s all there in his eyes.
Toji swallows hard, jaw clenching. Megumi. His kid. Another reason for pushing through this hellhole. He pictures him—too serious for his own good, but with those same sharp blue eyes. His boy.
“Yo, Fushiguro,” another voice calls out, snapping him from his thoughts. One of the guards. “Mail just came in.”
Toji is already up before the guy even finishes his sentence, heart pounding just a little faster. The guard hands the baby pink envelope with a lazy flick of the wrist, and Toji snatches it up quick, already recognizing the familiar scrawl of his name across the front.
His block mate lets out a laugh. “Man, look at you. Actin’ like a kid on Christmas.” Toji was always stoic, kept to himself and never showed much emotion. But hey, you always brought it out of him and he wasn't gonna front or hold a facade when it came to how he felt about you.
Toji doesn’t respond. He just sits back down, thumbs sliding under the flap of the envelope, tearing it open like it’s the only thing keeping him breathing in this godforsaken place. The first thing that falls out is a polaroid. His breath catches. It’s you.
You're sitting by a window, sunlight spilling over your skin, that soft, gentle smile on your lips. His girl. His sweetheart. Looking at him like she sees something in him that even he has trouble believing in sometimes. And just like that, the walls of the prison don’t feel so damn suffocating. He’s got something to hold onto.
Toji runs a thumb over the polaroid, like he could somehow feel you through it. The picture is warm, soft, a stark contrast to the cold steel and concrete around him. He exhales through his nose, staring at it for a long moment before finally unfolding the letter.
Your words hit him like they always do—gentle, teasing, but full of something deeper. Something that reminds him why he’s still holding on.
Hey, baby. I hope you’re not making the guards’ lives too hard. (Who am I kidding? I know you are.) It’s been getting colder here. I keep stealing your hoodie, the one you always say is yours but smells like me now. Tough luck, Fushiguro, it’s mine until you come back and take it from me.
Toji smirks, shaking his head. She’s gonna pay for that one.
Megumi’s been doing good in school, but I had to threaten to ground him just to get him to eat something other than instant ramen. He’s stubborn, just like his old man.
His smirk fades a little. He can picture it—Megumi sitting at the dinner table, arms crossed, trying to act like he doesn’t care. Just like Toji used to. The guilt settles in his chest, heavy and unshakable. He just wishes he could be there. For the both of you.
We miss you. I miss you.
He stops, lingering on that line. Simple, but enough to send a slow ache through his ribs.
I don’t care how long it takes. You come back to me, Toji. We’re waiting.
Toji exhales sharply, pressing the paper between his fingers, his grip a little too tight.
“Damn,” his block mate mutters, watching him. “She really ridin’ for you, huh?”
Toji just nods. He doesn’t need to say anything. He folds the letter carefully, tucking it away with the others. Getting up, he sticks some tape of the back of the polaroid, putting it up next to the rest of the pictures. Then he leans back in his chair, looking up at the mosaic of pictures you send him.
Yeah. She’s waiting. And he sure as hell isn’t gonna let her down.

DPxDC Zero Gravity
Things Justice League knows about Danny Phantom:
He's dead (why, how, and for how long is unclear)
He's generally on the 'good' side (but contingency plans have been set up in case of 'future evil self' resurfacing, by Danny's own suggestion)
He's a figure of authority among other dead/neverborn/otherworldly/eldritch/magical beings (however, it's unclear to what kind of authority he holds and why)
He's dating one of the Bats (unclear to who, but none of them confirmed nor denied the fact, which is a confirmation on its own)
He absolutely hates only three things: toast, circus, and Christmas (neither of them explained)
His powerset is so wide that he can't even fully recount it (unclear if it's because he doesn't remember all his abilities or if he can't keep track of the new ones popping up spontaneously)
He's hot [whoever added this, you're not wrong, but I'm watching you - O.]
He has a grudge against Flash (unclear to why, but Flash seems to know the reason and won't budge regardless)
Of course, there are many more things to know about Danny Phantom, but they are mostly suspicions, rumors, and speculations. Like how sometimes the boy seems distracted and bored as if he is only going through a pre-written script; a sign of repeatedly going through the same day a few times too many, as the other time-travellers say. Or like how sometimes he knows too much - the boy is an expert in Kryptonian biology, to Clark's great surprise, and is more knowledgeable about Olympus politics than Diana herself.
There are also little things that are hard to notice and even harder to ignore once you do. How he never talks about family but likes listening to others talk about it. How he pointedly stays away from the medbay and any kind of medical staff. How he stops every time he passes one of the giant windows on the main floor of the Watchtower, smiling dreamily at the sight of vast, open space beyond it.
And then, there's The Thing that no one addresses.
When Danny Phantom doesn't pay attention, he unknowingly nullifies gravity.
The first time it happened, Bruce thought the Watchtower's artificial gravity collapsed. However, he very quickly realized that it was a local occurrence - only a few rooms and a hallway were affected - and, right in the center of it, was Danny, reading a book he borrowed (stolen) from the Wayne manor library.
The boy himself never noticed it. Which made sense, given that he defied gravity all on his own, always floating in the air above the floor.
But the others never acknowledged it either, treating the sudden absence of gravity as a sign of one, Danny appearing somewhere around, and two, him being in a good, if a bit absent, mood.
All in all, it's not the strangest thing that happens at the Watchtower on a daily basis.
And, besides, it's kind of fun.
¤¤¤
Danny, floating in the middle of the game room at Wayne manor, deeply engrossed in a video game: Eat this, sucker!
Tim, using his toes and knees to keep himself from floating up from the couch, not wanting to distract Danny from their match: Oh, you're going down.
Titus in the background:
Tumblr media
¤¤¤
Bart, in the middle of a conversation with Kon:
Tumblr media
Kon: ...
Bart, looking down at the cup on the floor: ... I guess he left?..
Kon: He literally went through a giant glowing portal two minutes ago, five feet away from you, but that's how you figure it out?
Bart: I have a short attention span, anyway-
¤¤¤
Barry, opening a bag of chips just for all the contents and himself as well to start floating: I swear he does this on purpose, I fucking swear.
Tumblr media
¤¤¤
Red Tornado, coming into the training hall of Mount Justice: ...
Young Justice:
Tumblr media
Red Tornado: I take it Danny is visiting. I'll leave you to it, then.
¤¤¤
Bruce, walking out of the conference room at the Watchtower to see this on the other end of the hallway, internally: He may be coming this way, I should warn the others in the room.
Tumblr media
Bruce, a second later, because he is a little shit deep inside: On the other hand, it's a great surroundings awareness drill, so maybe I shouldn't.

Season 2 Squid Game Men + Who Their Jealous of
Pairing: Squid Game x GN!Reader
Warnings: mentions of killing, murder but not yandere
Author's Note: This wasn't requested but I thought I would post something in filling for the requests I'm going to post after school and this weekend as much as I can before The Rookie season 7 comes out and I would like to write for that too. Also I'm sorry if this also sucks, because I didn't want to literally be the same for all
Squid Game Women's version will be posted soon!
Tumblr media
Seong Gi-hun:
Tumblr media
Is jealous of Young-il
Can't put his finger to it, but he doesn't trust him very well
He takes Young-il's silence as a threat sometimes and the way he looks at you
Before he joined the games, jealously or insecurity was never a problem for him
But after what he went through, murder isn't even a second thought for him anymore
Wants to tell Young-il off, but Young-il would know he's bluffing and even Gi-Hun thinks so too
Front Man/Hwang In-Ho/Young-il
Tumblr media
Is also jealous of Gi Hun
Joined the games to stop Gi Hun telling the others how to win them
But after seeing you, his mission changed
Would try to get the chance to talk to you whenever he could; dormitory, breakfast or lunch time, before the games starts
But almost always Gi-Hun wants to talk to you. I mean who wouldn't
Tries to keep his composure calm but in his mind he wants to kill Gi-Hun
Thanos
Tumblr media
Jealous of Min su and Lee Myung-Gi
He knows Min su is very quiet and probably doesn't have the courage to ask you out, but can't help he upset about it
Always watches Lee Myung-Gi to see if he's interacting with you
Hating on Myung-Gi for the crypto scam is one thing. But it's another if he's also interested in you
Always has you on his team and cusses anyone out for wanting to pair off with you or team up with you
Kang Dae-Ho
Tumblr media
Jealous of Thanos
Hates it when he calls you seĂąorita/seĂąor
Wants to have the courage to just tell him off, but he's afraid of how he'll be perceived
Starts thinking he's not good enough for you
Lee Myung-Gi
Tumblr media
Also is jealous of Thanos and hates him
Already lost Jun-Hee and can't bear the thought of losing you too
Sees Thanos tries to flirt with you and he clenches his fist so much that it sometimes hurts to hold anything afterwards
Jun-ho
Tumblr media
Is expectionally a chill guy
Sometimes he has an off feeling about Gi-Hun
He also wants to take down the people on the island, but he's also concerned how close he might be to you or spending nights out watching the salesman
Will try to go with you every time you go out with Gi-Hun
Salesman
Tumblr media
Is jealous of anyone that tries to get close to you, but mostly Gi-Hun
Especially that Gi-Hun has been looking after you and the salesman
Will take matters into his own hands if necessary, which he always thinks it is
Had compassion for Gi-Hun first, but knowing that he's been looking after you two, can't help but think of where to bury him

‧₊˚ what are we?
...nothing. right?.₊˚⊹
Tumblr media Tumblr media
convienence. a means to end. that's all this was for both of you right? when katsuki is fed up with the crazed fangirls who just won't leave him alone, he works out a deal with you. it was just coincidence he had a huge crush on you.
☆pair. 2ndyear!katsuki x reader. tags. fake dating!trope, fluff, reader is academically flopping for a bit, pet names, cursing, fighting (verbal), happy ending wc. 6k
჌note. sorry that this took so long lol! i wrote this in chapter form if you'd like to read it here, but this one shot is the same thing.
Tumblr media
post-war brought troubles for a lot of the students in class 1-A. especially bakugo katsuki.
he had to completely relearn how to write with his other hand, had to learn how to fight without injury to it.
and he had to learn to deal with his crazy amount of fangirls.
his fight had been broadcasted, the manner in which he pushed himself to the very brink broadcasted to the world. his victory brought spoils, though not in a way he expected.
he didn't expect to be chased down the hallways every morning, to have a line of girls wanting his autograph as he ate. he didn't expect to be gifted things, things they just assumed he liked, but couldn't be farther from the truth.
luckily, you seemed to like chocolate. he found refuge these days sitting on the roof floor of U-A next to you during lunch, passing you the chocolate gifts he'd been given.
he hated chocolate. but to be honest, he loved seeing you smile.
"thanks 'suki." you said for the nth time, picking the best chocolates out of the box and leaving the gross ones alone.
"yeah." he sighed, glancing at you occasionally as he moved to support the weight of his head with his hands. he found himself speechless around you often. words failing as he leant into the comfort of your presence.
you were about to say something, he thinks. your mouth was open though the blaring of the bell cut you off. "oh, let's go 'suki." you said, holding your hand out to him.
he took it, letting you pull him up and holding onto your hand for just a second too long. you dumped the rest of the chocolates in a trash can and made your collective way down to 1-A. you laughed at how he seemed to try and hide behind you, eyes darting around for the general course girls who seemed to have nothing better to do than follow him around.
they didn't come though. he saw a group of them but when they saw your proximity to him..
they left him alone.
a lightbulb went off in his head, he mentally kicked himself for not thinking of it sooner. as he sat in class, eyeing your seat between momo and jirou, he thought about how he'd ask you.
test papers were being passed out, graded ones. "yo man," kirishima started, looking over his paper, "what'd you get?"
katsuki scoffed. "what do you think? another 100, easy as shit."
kaminari groaned beside him, "you're cheating or something! i got an 80."
"that's high for someone like you!"
"hey!"
"aw man, i got a 70. you're so manly bakubro!"
"yeah, guess i am."
katsuki tried to resist the turning of his head, he really did. but he wanted to know what score you got, if you did well. though from the expression on your face and the way momo patted you on the back,
not to mention the red ink used all over your paper. he knew you didn't.
"man this totally sucks!" you exclaimed, your hands clutching the paper of your test. "i studied and everything, i don't even need math, im a hero for crying out loud!"
jirou's teases and momo's comforts faded into the background as he only focused on you, and the nagging feeling for him to help you.
with another ring of the bell and a sigh from mr. aizawa, katsuki left early to try and beat the crowd of girls who seemed to pounce on him.
he didn't though, he found himself at the entrance at U-A, almost to freedom when the crowd pointed at him, "that's him! i can't believe it!"
"dynamite, an autograph please?"
"hey- don't be so casual. it's lord explosion--"
"who cares? i want a photo!"
at that, they chased him. all his progress down the stairs and through the halls was gone as he was led right back down to class 1-A. he stupidly lead himself right back into a corner.
his head darted around, until he noticed a tuft of familiar hair in the classroom. you hadn't left? oh well, he needed your help and quick.
you were sobbing internally, looking over your horrific test score with a sad expression. a 70? you might as well just drop out now.
as the hours of studying you'd done for waste passed over in your mind, a noise caught you off guard.
he had burst in, making your deflated form jump off the desk. "katsuki, don't scare me like that!"
he rushed over to your side, grabbing your hand off where it was hanging limply on the desk. "be my girlfriend for a second."
the words barely even processed in your brain before you were being manhandled off the desk, your mind rushed to catch up. "wait-- wha-"
before you knew it you were led towards the door of obsessed fan girls. his hand was intertwined tightly with yours, a slight flush on his face.
"listen up." he started, making his fans shush eachother. "my girlfriend hasn't been appreciating all your bullshit. and neither have i, so for the love of god stop it already."
he pulled you alongside him, "move." a path opened for the two of you, letting you two through. he walked you to the entrance, no words spoken between the two of you until you stopped infront of the lockers where you'd keep your shoes.
"[name]-- uh." he took a breath, his heart sped up rapidly around you. it sped up at the simple tilt of your head.
"so. if you help me with this shit, i'll tutor you.
or whatever."
a hand was behind his head, his averted eyes now focusing on you as he awaited your answer with baited breath.
you had an expression of thoughtfulness on your face. your finger on your chin as you looked up to the ceiling to think.
'have everyone think youre dating a cute boy and get a tutor?'
the pinkie of your hand shot out, a closed eye smile on your face. "i'm in!"
a soft smile graced his lips, his pinkie intertwining with yours and sealing his fate in more ways than one.
because you really did have him wrapped around your finger. literally and figuratively.
"let's go to my room so we can talk over it!"
you really were going to be the death of him.
it's not like he'd never been to your room, just not in a situation like this.
not when he'd declared himself your boyfriend an hour earlier, not when his hands were sweaty with his nervousness, and not when you'd agreed so hastily to be his.
he wondered if you'd accept if anyone else asked you. if izuku or todoroki had been facing this situation instead of him.
"'suki?" you patted the side of your bed next to you, "sit with me."
he sighed, the thoughts disappearing from his mind at your words. he really was whipped for you.
"yeah, yeah. i'm goin'" he sat beside you, oddly stiffer than normal. he held his own hands as he waited for you to say something.
"okay, so, we should have like-- a plan or something right?"
"a plan? what the fuck for?"
"like so we don't get caught faking this or whatever. if they find out your fans will just come back running, no?"
he shuddered at the thought. "yeah, don't wanna deal with that shit."
"right? so the first part of our plan, is that everyone has to think we're dating. cool?"
katsuki's mind was racing. cool? more like the best thing that would happen to him. he felt as if everyone knew of his crush on you.. except for you.
being to say he was all yours and that you were all his, even if it was a lie..
"yeah, it's cool."
"great, that's really the only thing we had to establish. we hang out a lot anyways so, we'll just have to be affectionate or something to seal the deal."
his heart jumped at the idea of hugging you, wrapping an arm around you, holding hands with you in public. the ghost of a smile came over him.
"right."
"cool. so nothing else matter--"
"we're starting your studying shit tomorrow. the next test is next week, so we don't have time to play around [name]."
"ughh. i wish you forgot about that." your head fell into your hands. "i hate math, what do i even need it for?"
"advanced math, nothing really. but estimates are important in hero work. estimating time, the abilities of your body, the amount of civilians, all that stuff."
"you're such a nerd."
"hah?"
he continued explaining the importance of math to you despite your grievances. his finger was pointed in the air, you swore you could see the need emoji popping over his face.
your eyes closed, the weight of the day, your grade, and the thought of studying alongside a nerd like katsuki tiring you to no avail. you yawned, laying your head on his shoulder.
you could hear the thumping of his heart, the racing of his blood in his veins. it rocked you to sleep, "wake me up later, m' a take a nap." you mumbled against his shoulder, before falling asleep.
his mouth shut, eyes peeled on your body that now clung to his side. his face grew hot, when did it get so hot in your damn room?
he tried his best to stay awake, to let you nap and wake you up in the morning. but as the clock hit eight o clock, the time he was supposed to head back to his dorm.. he found himself stuck in place.
not by an invisible force, not by some obligation. it was only the thought of wanting to be with you, next to you. wanting to let the comfort of your weight next to him drive himself to sleep.
so he did. he fell asleep, letting his head lay on top of yours, holding your body closer to his. shutting his eyes.
the light of the sun woke him up first, you didn't close your blinds yesterday, and the sun shined brightly,
directly into his face. he groaned, his voice deep from sleep as he peeled himself off of you. he was confused from fatigue, wondering why he was still in your room.
he felt an arm around his waist, he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes to see it was you who was holding him close. he thinks you were using him in place of your huge teddy bear, the one laid neatly in the corner of your bed.
his heart rate quickened once again, wanting to go back to his room, but fighting the urge to stay looking at you.
an absentminded hand moved a couple strands of your hair out your face, pinching your cheek when he got bold.
you don't wake up, he sighed a breath of relief. 'til he felt your body start to stir, you pushed your head more into his chest, your eyes finally starting to open slightly.
"oh? g'morning kat'." you were sleepy, your words slightly slurred and muffled from how you were pressed against him.
"you slept here?" you asked, pulling away from him as you moved to stretch your upper body.
"uh-- yeah." he was once again lost for words at the sight of you, your shirt slightly pulled up from how you'd slept, your hair messy from the lack of a protective style before sleep.
"sorry for waking you up then, 'suki."
"no, i was already up. i just didn't wanna wake you."
"well, you failed." you joked. "anyways, you should get out of here soon, if iida sees you he'll probably flip out and tell mr. aizawa."
"right."
"let's walk to class together!" you clasped his hands in yours. "okay?"
you were going to be the death of him once again. "okay."
you let go and he got up, ruffling his hair slightly and looking back at you who sent him a small smirk and wave. before slowly walking out your door. he did his best to keep his movements quiet and minimal.
he was at the elevator, before uraraka walked out. shit. "bakugo? what are you doing here?"
"uh.. got lost."
her face scrunched in confusion, a knowing smile on her face after a second. "right.. tell [name] good morning for me."
".. tell her yourself." he got into the elevator, already seeing the grin in uraraka's face as he went up a floor to his room.
the same grin everyone greeted him with as he went to sit next to you in the common room, having made you some breakfast. he and you were all ready, you had refreshed your hair from when he was playing with it, simple makeup and your uniform ironed. he admired you while he ate his meal.
"ah, thanks 'suki."
"mhm."
you moved to whisper in his ear, "why's everyone looking at us?"
"fuck if i know."
"so you two lovebirds aren't gonna say anything?" denki said, putting his hands on his hips as he looked you two over.
"'bout what?"
"that you two are totally dating!" mina exclaimed, pointing at you. "and you didn't say anything? wow [name], i thought.. we were closer than that." she mock fully cried.
katsuki was about to say something, you cut him off though. "i thought everyone knew?" with a tilt of your head, a question mark almost visible from the blank expression you wore.
the class only sighed, kirishima shrugged his shoulders. "yeah, we should've guessed. i mean bakugo had a obvious crush on you for the longest."
"yeah, good looks man." sero gave him a thumbs up.
"tch. let's go [name]." he sat up, placing his and your finished dishes in the sink before you followed behind him.
"right! bye guys!"
you grabbed his hand as you walked out the door. nobody was around, there was no need to keep up appearances now.
but that didn't stop him from holding your hand tighter.
and that didn't stop you from clinging even more to his side.
it seemed you two were now together all the time. a clingy couple is what you seemed like to your friends, and more importantly his fans.
at lunch he could now be in the cafeteria again, you were stuck his side as you ate, an arm around you as you shared his food, insisting his cooking was better than the U-A food.
you were caged in by his body, you really did just look like a sappy couple to everyone.
during class, he was caught glancing at you. a lot. he'd roll his eyes and pretend nothing even happened, but everyone knew he was far gone.
during training, as you sparred you noticed he was going harder on you than before. some would think that because you were his crush he wouldn't get so aggressive,
too bad katsuki only wanted to push you harder, get you to show the strength he saw you unleash on those villains in the war. he wanted you to be stronger beside him, if he was number one, he'd want you to be ranked closely to him, because he knew you were strong enough.
that didn't mean it wasn't any more hard to fight him, the man was a maniac.
"you can chill out you know!"
"what? can't take it?!"
"no, slow your fucking roll!" you barely dodged his other attack, just barely moving out the way as he threw an explosion in your direction.
you now had met the conditions to use your quirk, comeback. by generating a max of 8 orbs, they'd absorb energy that you could use back for your offense. the only downside?
melee attacks couldn't be absorbed at all.
a kick to your legs sent you to the ground, you dispersed one of your orbs with the explosion stored inside of it.
"be nice and let me win!!"
"no."
he dodged your attack and pinned you to the ground. he won.
"you're so mean 'suki." you shoved him off you, making him grunt. "a good boyfriend would've let me win!"
a nagging voice in the back of his head was telling him he wasn't yours, you weren't his, and that he was only doing this for his convinience.
"well, i guess i'll be a better one next time."
even that voice couldn't deny that the way he cared for you wasn't anything less than real. that even if this relationship was fake, that he was undoubtedly yours. that the way he held his hand out to you, lifting you as gently as he could fathom.
"wanna go again?" he asked, a boyish smirk on his face.
"you know it!"
your plan of tiring katsuki out with exercise didn't work, so you found yourself in his room at his desk. showered and wiping the dew off your neck with a towel, you sat in front of him with a book splayed open.
he was hammering topic after topic into you.. statistics or something? you weren't really paying attention, you were more interested in the bulge of his muscles out of his tank top.
his words were a blur when you suddenly found yourself reaching a hand out to feel his muscle,
your hand squeezing it.
'firm. hm.' you thought, until he pulled you away, an incredulous look on his face. "this is why your class ranking keeps falling [name]. focus!"
"how can i focus with you in front of me? it's like dancing a donut in front of a cop!" you whined, face planted onto his desk.
"you're.. insane."
"you love me though, don't you?" the words slipped out of your lips without a second thought, your face flushing slightly. "oops, sorry! almost forgot you arent my like-- real boyfriend!"
he swore he heard a bit of disappointment in your voice, felt a bit of reluctance in your movements as you pulled away at him, saw a bit of longing in your eyes.
"uh.. yeah. 's fine. let's just.. take a break." he said, motioning over to lay on his bed and do nothing for a little while.
if you would've told him a couple months ago that he'd be sat, face to face, body next to body, hands awkwardly close to each other as you remained in silence. you'd had a movie on in the background, something stupid he thought. not like he payed attention to it at all.
it was comfortable, being around you. he'd be a liar if he said that he didn't like the fact that everyone now thought you were his and vice versa. not just his fans, not just yours, but your mutual friends. family.
"do you wanna try again?" he asked after a while, voice soft and his hand moving to rub his eyes. it was his bedtime, eight o clock sharp, but he'd break it for you.
"hm? to be honest no." you moved to face him. "you look tired anyways 'suki, you should sleep."
he grumbled, his eyes closing slightly as he slowly swatted your hand away from his face, his grip lingering on your wrist.
"right." he yawned. he didn't know if it was the sleep or impulse, maybe a mixture of both. but he pulled you closer to him. making you crash against his chest with his head in the nook of your neck.
"stay." he uttered, his breath flush against your neck making the hairs stand up.
"katsuki?" you thought you were dreaming. you'd move to pinch yourself if you weren't being pinned down by him.
"please?"
"..okay." your words barely matched your actions. you cuddled more into him, pulling him impossibly closer as you melted into eachother.
a blanket was thrown over the two of you. you fell asleep in his arms, the beating of his heart matching yours as you breathed a sigh of realization.
you were horribly in love with katsuki bakugo. and he was with you.
your 'fake' activities as a couple were coming along a little bit too easily to the two of you.
feeding him a snack in his room as a joke, him finding out he kind of liked being babied, him blackmailing you so you shut up.
all couple things. normal couple activity.
you didn't even have to continue those things behind closed doors, but it just came so naturally. it seemed wrong not to do it.
it seemed wrong for him not to sling a hand over you, not to hold your hand when it was so close to him, not to move the stray strands of hair and tuck it behind your ear.
it seemed wrong for him not to save a spot for you at lunch, not to wake up a bit earlier and slip out of your sleepy grasp to prepare you a meal alongside his.
not to make some breakfast for you, light or heavy, depending on what he'd learned you preferred.
not to walk with you to class, even walking with you to go see your general studies friend in the morning, leaning against the doorway with a smile on his face as he watched you rave on about a show you'd watched recently.
why wouldn't he do it if he could? why shouldn't he watch your favorite shows just to have things to talk to you about?
he found himself fighting to stay focused during your study sessions now too. he found himself noticing things about you, the smaller things.
how you'd flip your hello kitty pencil around while you were speaking. how you'd bite your lips in concentration, your expressions of disbelief when you actually started getting things correct.
he'd have to cover his hand with his face. you were just too cute.
sometimes he'd even get distracted mid sentence. he was explaining simple things over again, just to make sure you knew what it meant.
but it was hard even keeping eye contact with you.
"so, in this problem x would be.. uh.." he went silent, his mouth open but no words escaping.
"x would be what? 7?" you showed your page of work to him, with a nervous smile. "if it's not right tell me already! i know im kinda dumb, it won't hurt my feelings too bad i swear!"
he looked down back at his page. mentally slamming his head onto the table, before recovering. "yeah, no you're right. you got it."
you slammed the work onto his desk, "finally! then we can break now right?"
"yeah, 'guess so."
"let's do something fun. take a walk, my legs hurt from sitting." you pulled him up by his hand, dragging him to his door. "hurry up!"
he couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped him, you really reminded him of just how young you two were. how he was just a high schooler with a huge crush, how--
"why are you looking at me like that? are you sick?" you placed a hand on his forehead, making him promptly rip it off. a scowl quickly replaced the smile that been on his face moments prior. "no i'm not. let's go."
you walked hand in hand, the sunset the background for your 'date'.
the last few days, he'd been nervous to bring up what was happening between you. he was nervous to ruin the odd relationship you two had, he didn't want to lose you. he thought the things you two had been doing crossed the line between friendship and lovers.
you didn't have to do any of this. though he was sure you knew that already.
"math exam's tomorrow."
"don't remind me! you totally ruined the moment you know."
"you'll pass. i mean, i was your tutor after all. if you fail with me as a teacher? you are a lost cause."
"that's not nice to say." you ripped his hand away from yours, crossing your arms on your chest. "thats really messed up 'suki."
he leant down to face you, the sun goldening you two in its wake as he grew a cocky smirk on his lips. "oh really?"
"yes really."
"n' what're you gonna do about it?" his face was barely an inch away from yours. with a glance to his lips, he moved closer.
he barely pecked you, before he heard a loud, obnoxious idiot speak from behind him.
"[name] and bakugo are totally making out over here!"
denki and kirishima were looking at the two of you, a glare crossed over katsuki's face as he basically dragged you with him back into his dorm. he was about to leave you at your dorm, the hallway empty since curfew was around the corner.
he held your hands in his, running his thumb over the knuckle of yours. he intertwined your fingers, only letting go after a while.
he tilted your head upwards with his two fingers, wordlessly asking for permission. moonlight now struck you two as he moved in.
uninterruptedly, he kissed you. deepening it with a pull of the hand, holding you against him.
he let go after a while, his internal clock signaling it was almost time for curfew.
before he left, he whispered to you. "i don't.. really care what we're labeled. and if this shit is real or not.
i just want to be close to you."
he turned, walking to the elevator. leaving your breathless, with your heart in your throat.
no more words were spoken between you two, not as you screamed into your pillow, and not as he stared up into the ceiling of his room.
you passed that math test. and each assignment that went with it.
the end of the year was now coming quickly, of the school year that is. you and katsuki still kept up your 'act', the activities now stretching to dates after school mixed in with your study sessions.
one's that'd leave the touch of katsuki on you more than the touch of knowledge. but it was working nonetheless.
it was all good between you two, an eternal honeymoon it seemed. after all, by now it had been at least seven months since this began. your class ranking was higher, he no longer had to worry about strolling through the halls, it seemed nothing could get in your way.
well, besides two things.
one: the fact that you two were scared to label in between yourselves yet, too bashful to call him your boyfriend and you his girlfriend in private, yet proud fully admitting it to others.
two, the girl currently straddling him with no regard to you whatsoever. your entire cafeteria table was staring at her, looking at what katsuki would do to move her off.
but when he didn't immediately, didn't immediately curse the girl out and push her off him? you did the job for him.
you yanked the girl by her hair, sending her to the floor with a tray of food falling onto her body. all attention was on you as you stared at katsuki, your mouth agape in anger.
"what the fuck bakugo?" you ignored her, even stepping on her leg slightly as your hands were agitated, your whole body was. you didn't even know why you were jealous. this wasn't real, it never was, he was just playing his role too well.
you should've known katsuki would go too far. he always did.
"babe-- it's not what you think-"
"then what was i looking at? and don't call me that. don't- don't fucking call me anything. we're over."
you knew to him that probably meant something different. you acclaimed the despair in his eyes to the loss of protection, to the loss of ease as he walked in the halls and the lack of paparazzi that'd ask him questions on his love life.
but to him it was so much more.
it was those things, yes. but it was more so the thought of losing you. the thought of the affection over the months being nothing but a memory and not his future. the thought of not having you close to him.
the thoughts of becoming nothing to you, less than a friend.
he didn't know why he didn't move, it was like he physically couldn't. the look in the girl's eyes, the grip she had on him, the weird smile. he recognized her as one of the girls who usually would be in the crowd following him around.
"you don't mean that." his voice sounded more desperate than it had in the whole time he'd met you, more longing slipping through than he intentioned.
but the sun's casting light had moved away from you, casting you in a shadow. "i do mean it. fuck you."
he was going to run after you, to chase you as you slammed your lunch tray into the trash. heading up to the rooftop to he alone.
but a hand, mina's, pulled him back. "i think.. you did enough bakugo."
she went after you instead, promising to bakugo she'd check on you.
fangirls were one thing? but a messy public breakup where you were never really something in the first place? surprisingly worse.
he'd been more snappy lately, his aura making the girls around him keep their distance.
he'd become quieter, closed off. you didn't come to eat lunch with him anymore, obviously. and he didn't go up to the rooftop to join you.
he didn't know how to speak to you, how to explain what happened, how to say that he was sorry.
he ran the scenario in his head a million times, thinking over the girl's quirk that had forced him into place. but it sounded so convenient, like he was lying.
but since your entire relationship was based off of one, he didn't know how to approach the topic in the first place.
a week. a week passed before he could muster up the words to speak to you.
a week of being ignored in the hallways, side glances and being walked off on. a week of not having you by his side, not having you to talk to, to study with,
to kiss.
you were alone on the rooftop, eating silently as you felt a presence behind you. you saw his hair in the shadow and sighed, placing your plate onto the floor next to you. "what?"
"let me talk."
"...fine."
he breathed a sigh, hands balling as he forced the words out. "i know what you saw. and i know it was bad, but listen. that.. girl. she had some quirk on me or something."
he paused, seeing as your movement shifted. he took the fact that you didn't leave as a sign to continue.
"i couldn't move, i would've. you know that. but, it was right for you to be fucking pissed. i'd be too.
and i know, this is my fault in a way. i've been.. a fuckin' loser about this." his hand went up to support his head, his eyes averting from where he felt yours eyeing him.
"i needed to ask you out, officially i mean, a long time ago. it was wrong of me to use you-"
"it wasn't like that and you know it." you moved now to face him, you taking his hands in yours once more.
"what are we? to you i mean."
"right now..
we're nothing, right?"
your eyes widened, his eyes came back to look at yours.
"what?"
the words settled between you, it sent a cold shiver down your spine at the implication.
"wait-- fuck i'm messing this shit up. i mean, we're, not anything right now. we weren't anything."
your heart sank, eyes falling to the floor though your hand still held by him. your bleeding heart was in his grasp too, it was apparent.
"but,
i'd like to be? if you'd have me."
he squeezed your hand tightly. "i, i think i did this all out of order. but, would you go out with me?"
you let out an anxious laugh mixed with emotion. relief? despair? you honestly didn't know. tears burned the corners of your eyes.
"you're-- you're real weird, you know that?"
"is that a no."
"no, it's a yes. i think."
"ya think?"
"you don't get to question me!"
"yeah, whatever." you shared a laugh of relief together. he held you, moving away to bring something out of his pocket.
a small bento box for you.
you gasped at the sight of it, it was so cute. "thank god! i hate this school shit." you sat down, patting the side beside you, prompting him to sit down.
"wow, a heart? don't tell me you like me or something katsuki."
instead of deflecting, of telling you to buzz off, of shoving you lightly, a small smile came over his lips once again. after a beat, he laughed boyishly.
"you caught me."
...
he patted your back as you choked on the heart shaped seaweed.
your first date was cute, a small picnic with the country of musatafu as your backdrop. it was weird, this scene had played out between you two various times. in his room, in public, in private, to everyone else you two had just recovered from a messy breakup. and yet,
your stomachs were filled with butterflies at the affection between you two.
your rank was high, the dates were endless between the two of you now. study dates, just going to cafes, mundane things became more when you were by each others side.
years passed, and your poor dorm was going mostly unused. you'd sleep in his bed most of the time, actually- you'd spent most of your time in his room. he even cleared out a section for you in his closet despite the fact that yours was perfectly fine.
graduation came along, your careers came rushing at the two of you.
you were the top rated woman hero, and he was number one. just like he dreamt, just like he imagined the future would be for the two of you all those years ago.
you were picking out some drinks from the vending machine, a pocky hanging out your mouth as you decided between two flavors.
you finally chose, having two drinks in your hand for you and katsuki when he suddenly dragged you into an alleyway, grunting when he pushed you against the wall.
deja vu? maybe, you felt like you lived through this before, the same mindless stampede of girls rushing past.
"i told you to clip down your hair."
"shut up. don't they even care that we're married now? why do they fucking bother?." he sighed, annoyed as he lightly grabbed the can out your hand, his frustration not matching his actions.
"well, maybe we need something that'd make it even more official." a lightbulb went over the both of your heads. you faced each other, a streetlight letting you see the slight pink tint of his cheeks.
"a ca-"
"a baby."
you laughed, keeling over at the sight of his face that grew impossibly red.
you went home, hand in hand, the photos of the two of you together making rounds in the media again.
but as you laid with his head laid on your lap, your head rested comfortably against the furniture you'd chosen for your home?
you couldn't help but feel like everything worked out perfectly.
and with the new addition of your family laid sleeping on top of katsuki's chest.

“I'm going to be very honest, honey… this feels like a sleeping arrangement for a couple that's just had an argument.”
You laugh a little at the mild pout on your boyfriend's face as he stares contemplatively at the bed after you've suggested a rather… interesting sleep method that he's never really heard of before.
“It's really not,” you assure him. “Other couples do this all the time! And I thought it would be fun to try out too.”
Your boyfriend, Seungcheol, blinks at the bed before looking over at you, mystified.
“Really? People want to do this?”
“Yes, Cheol.”
“Hm.” Seungcheol frowns. “What did you say this was called again?”
“The Scandinavian Sleep Method,” you say cheerfully, hopping over to the drawers with all the different duvets and duvet covers that you and your boyfriend have collected over the years you've been living together. “Isn't it such a great idea? We sleep in the same bed, but we each have a different duvet so we get better sleep but still get to be next to each other.”
You begin pulling out different duvets, inspecting them and continuing to chatter as you do so.
“I know how much you love weighted blankets, but you know they're not something I'm a big fan of,” you say. “And you really hate my fluffy covers, for some reason. But if we sleep this way, then both of us can sleep happily without causing disturbance to the other's sleep quality!”
With a flourish, you turn back round to Seungcheol, the offending weighted blanket and fluffy cover in your hands, as if emphasising your point. There's a bright beam on your face, evidently eager to try out this new idea, but Seungcheol?
He's still looking a bit hesitant.
Which, understandable. You're introducing a new sleeping arrangement three years after you've been quite happily living together. Anyone would find that weird.
“If we don't like it, we can switch back,” you assure him. You shrug. “It's just a trend I saw online, Cheol. I thought it would be cool.”
Seungcheol pauses, and then smiles, nodding once. “Fine, fine. Let's try out, then. We'll see if the Scandinavians actually sleep well.”
You cheer, dropping the bedding and skipping across the room to launch yourself into Seungcheol’s arms. He catches you easily, laughing as he does so, amused at how delighted you are by his acceptance.
“Yes! I love you. Now I get to make the bed all aesthetic with different layered sheets!”
Seungcheol laughs again. “All right, sweetheart. Tell me if you need more sheets to fit in with your vision, okay? I'll buy you whatever you need.”
“Oh my god, suddenly I love you even more.”
───────────── 🗝
Admittedly, Seungcheol does love hearing you say that you, the absolute love of his life, love him (and any self-respecting boyfriend would feel the same), but he's wondering if this entire thing is really, really all that worth it.
Because, well.
Seungcheol hates the Scandinavian Sleep Method.
He harbours no hatred towards the Scandinavians themselves, of course, but their sleep method, for him, well and truly sucks.
Of course, he can understand why people like it. There are aspects he doesn't mind, too: such as how it's currently way less likely for him to wake up at 4am with a cold ass because you've stolen half the covers from him again. Or how he doesn't have to worry about the fluffy, fuzzy feeling of your sheets pressing creepily soft kisses against his ankles. Or how he can now actually sleep peacefully without finding that he's been suffocated by your weight on his chest because now, you actually sleep on your side of the bed.
Nevertheless, he hates this.
Unfortunately, he can't bring himself to say anything about this, because—
“I seriously think my quality of sleep has improved so much,” you say to Seungcheol one Sunday morning, beaming over your cup of coffee as he makes breakfast waffles for you. “The Scandinavians really know what they're talking about, huh?”
And your eyes are bright, sparkling as you say this, so full of life even though it's nine in the morning on a Sunday.
So Seungcheol smiles back, happy purely because you're happy, even though if you really pressed him, he'd admit that he's not really happy at all.
“I guess they do,” he says, turning back to the waffles. “Do you want honey with the waffles? Or the new maple syrup I bought you?”
“Ooh, maple syrup, please!”
And then Seungcheol had done all sorts of fancy tricks with the bottle of maple syrup, and you had clapped your hands and laughed, delighted, and Seungcheol felt a little better, the weight of his guilt that he didn't share your opinion beginning to lighten.
There's no real big reason why he hates this sleeping arrangement. Sure, it stops all your bad sleeping habits, but, truthfully, he… misses all those things.
He misses waking up to you all huddled up in the blankets, looking all small and adorable whilst swathed in the thick fabric. He misses cuddling you close and entangling his legs with yours in order to escape from the weird fluffy texture of your sheets. He misses feeling the comforting weight of you asleep against his chest, warm and secure like the physical manifestation of his soul, safely tucked against his side.
Now, you simply smile at him, face shiny and soft from your skincare routine, and give him a peck on the cheek goodnight before snuggling under your duvet, away from him, in your own little bubble of comfort.
Without him.
It makes him feel like an abandoned dog left in the rain outside of his owner's home.
Excuse him for being dramatic, but he's literally slept with you curled up in his arms for a very, very long time now. And these days, now that you're no longer with him and are miles away on the other half of the bed, he can't fall asleep by himself.
Withdrawal symptoms from cuddling must be a thing, because he's going through them right now.
“Just talk about how you feel, then,” is what any sane person would say about this matter, which is very good, very sound, advice.
However, it's also what Joshua says to Seungcheol when he complains to him about the new sleeping arrangement, and everyone knows Joshua is the least sane person in existence, so Seungcheol decides to ignore his advice.
Joshua rolls his eyes, used to but not pleased by Seungcheol's stubbornness.
“You're being silly,” he says, when Seungcheol vetoes his suggestion. “This is obviously impacting your sleep quality in a negative way, which is the exact opposite of what Y/N was hoping for.”
“But Y/N seems to be sleeping better,” Seungcheol argues. He rubs his eyes, and the world spins a little as he does so. “So I probably shouldn't say anything, right?”
“No, you should say something,” Joshua says firmly. “What do you think Y/N will do when it becomes obvious that this new arrangement is actively harming you, and yet you didn't say anything? Hell, if I found out my boyfriend wasn't telling me that kind of stuff, I'd get really mad.”
Seungcheol frowns. “What? Why?”
“Because you're my boyfriend?” Joshua says. “Uh—not actually mine, obviously. But that's how Y/N would feel. You need to communicate your feelings. That's what couples do.”
Joshua takes a sip of his tea, spinning around in Seungcheol's desk chair in his study whilst Seungcheol, the owner of the chair, is currently exiled to the small wooden stool beside it.
“Just think about how you'd feel if you were in Y/N's shoes. How would you feel if your partner wasn't telling you that they're sleeping badly and feeling increasingly more terrible throughout the weeks because of something that could be easily fixed by them talking it out with you?”
And oh, now Seungcheol understands. Now it makes more sense. He'd want you to communicate your feelings immediately.
Joshua must see the revelation on Seungcheol's face, because he snorts smugly. “I knew you'd get there in the end.”
“Shut up,” Seungcheol grumbles, and Joshua mocks him for how ridiculously macho-man he was being before. “I'll talk to Y/N about this tonight.”
“Well done,” Joshua says amusedly, spinning around in Seungcheol's chair so fast that its joints, even as expensive and well-oiled as they are, begin to groan in surprise. “I'm so proud of you.”
“Shut up,” Seungcheol says again, and Joshua laughs. “And get off my chair.”
“Hmph! You're so mean. I bought this chair for you, you know.”
“No, you didn't.”
“No, I didn't. But you believed me for a second, didn't you?”
“Definitely not. Now get out of my house before Y/N gets home.”
───────────── 🗝
It's one of those very, very rare days where you finish work later than Seungcheol, and so when you unlock the front door and finally make it inside, you're more than ready to just fall into your boyfriend's arms.
Except, the entire ground floor of your house is dark when you get home.
“Where is he?” you say to yourself, mystified. “Cheol? Where are you?”
“In our room!” he calls back from upstairs, and you take off your coat and shoes, dumping your bag by the doorway and bounding up the stairs two at a time to get to your boyfriend.
“Seungcheol! Why were the hallway lights off? Have you eaten dinner yet? What's— wait, what are you doing?”
In the middle of your bed, right over where the two halves of your bedding meet, Seungcheol is sprawled out in an upside down starfish shape, staring up at you balefully as you walk into the room, and you laugh a little at the state your boyfriend is in.
“Hello,” you say amusedly. “You look like you're sulking.”
Seungcheol just continues to blink up at you like a displeased cat.
You laugh again, bending down and kissing him on the forehead. “Definitely sulking, I see. What's wrong, baby? What happened?”
There's a long moment where Seungcheol doesn't say anything, and you continue to smile down at him, petting his hair fondly. And then, he frowns, and speaks.
“What do you think of our bed?”
You look over at the head of the bed, scanning it briefly. “I think it looks fine.”
It's apparently the wrong thing to say, because Seungcheol frowns harder.
“Why? Do you not like it?”
“I don't like it,” Seungcheol says, and sits up, turning around to face you. “I don't like this sleeping arrangement.”
You tilt your head. “Oh? I thought you didn't mind the Scandinavian Sleep Method.”
Seungcheol sighs. “I lied,” he admits. “I actually hate it so much. It's the worst thing in the entire world.”
Your face softens in worry, feeling something thick and bitter rising to your throat at the idea that you've been forcing Seungcheol to go through with something he hates.
“I'm sorry,” you say sincerely, sitting down beside him on the bed. “I didn't realise. You should've said something, Cheol. I would've changed back in an instant.”
Seungcheol, for how big and manly and good at acting as your guard dog he is, still always melts under your touch, and the moment you wrap your arms around his neck, he softens into your embrace, burying his face in your shoulder.
“Would you really?” he asks, muffled into your blazer, and you belatedly realise that you're still in your work clothes. You haven't even washed your hands.
“Of course I would,” you say in your best don't be silly voice. “I don't want you to be feeling bad.”
His hands wrap around your waist, warm and comforting and he pulls you in closer, hugging you even tighter.
“Sorry,” he says. “I feel like I'm being stupid. This isn't even anything big. It just… makes me feel really terrible, and I don't know why.”
“Hey, that's totally okay,” you say placatingly, threading your fingers through his hair and patting him consolingly on the back. “I told you we didn't have to carry on with this, baby. I said we could switch back whenever we wanted to.”
He squeezes you tighter, arms wrapping more securely around you. “I still feel bad. You liked this sleeping method.”
You laugh softly, resting your chin on his shoulder. “Yes, but not as much as I like you.”
If possible, he seems to melt even further into you at those words, and you smile, adoring how clearly he adores you.
“Come on, sweetheart,” you say affectionately, kissing Seungcheol's ear before untangling yourself from his embrace. “Let's start remaking the bed then, hm?”
You pull away from his arms, and Seungcheol is staring at you with big eyes, irises all melty soft. And then he nods, smiling slightly, looking like a pleased puppy as he gets off the bed and begins helping you take the covers off the duvets.
───────────── 🗝
It's unusual for Seungcheol to be so shy like this—normally, he's the one telling you to be more outspoken, more confident, so it's a nice change. You quite like being able to reassure him, gently tell him what to do, praise him and shower him with love in the way that he always does with you.
“So why did you hate the Scandinavian Sleep Method?” you ask him a bit later as the two of you sit in front of the washing machine, watching it spin your bedding round and round. Seungcheol had insisted that you wash all of it right away, because otherwise the two of you were bound to put it off for a whole month.
Your boyfriend shrugs. He watches the bedding get spun in circles again and again and again.
And then, he finally looks at you, clad in your classic two-piece cotton pyjamas, hair all a mess, your face softened and natural now that you've washed up for the night, all ready to go to bed.
You look so pretty like this, so open and comforting and god, Seungcheol had missed you.
Even though he sees you every day. But that's whatever. He's missed being this close with you at night, in this kind of domestic setting, where it's just the two of you pressed close together in your house as the rest of the world sleeps.
“That sleeping arrangement…” he begins quietly, and you look up.
“Hm?”
Seungcheol holds your gaze very seriously as he continues. “It didn't let me hug you.”
You blink. “What?”
“It didn't let me hug you,” he repeats, as serious as ever, and you want to laugh in fondness because it really is that serious for him. “I couldn't cuddle you to sleep. I hated that.”
“Oh,” you say, positively melting away at his reason, so unbelievably in love with him that your heart is goo in your chest. “That's so sweet, Cheol, oh my god.”
You lean over and pinch his cheek, cooing over him, and he bats your hand away with a groan, smiling.
“Go away,” he grumbles, but it's so full of warmth that the words carry no weight whatsoever.
“But then you can't cuddle me in your sleep,” you say, pouting exaggeratedly. “Unless… you don't wanna cuddle me any more?”
You gasp dramatically, leaning away from him for full effect, and then yelp when he grabs you by the waist and pulls you into his side, preventing you from moving away.
“Don't say silly things like that,” he reprimands teasingly, laughter tinging the ends of his words. He kisses your shoulder. “Of course I want to cuddle you. It's the only thing I'll be doing every night from now on.”
“That's awfully cheesy,” you point out. “Sap.”
“It's all your fault.”
“Huh, I suppose it is,” you say proudly, snuggling into your boyfriend. “Glad to know I have such an effect on you.”
Seungcheol sighs, fond, and kisses your shoulder once again. “Oh, if only you knew.”

"Punch me."
Not a question, but an indisputable demand coming from the demon hunter, which made you do a double take, place the barrel of your M4 carbine on the table, and flat-out refuse.
"No."
He snarled, yes, snarled at you, slamming his pistol against the table with a loud bang. You looked up from your own weapon, taken aback by Dante's reaction, concern written all over your face. Was he high??
"Come on, Y/N, just do it. Just one punch, one tiny little punch. I know you want to." His cocky grin did numbers on your nerves, but you still refrained from giving him the satisfaction of hitting him. It’s been years since you met Dante, by this point you were used to his shenanigans.
"Why, though?" You decided to focus on cleaning your weapon, the sharp smell of isopropyl alcohol filling the room.
"Because," Dante groaned, snatching the bottle of liquid from you, causing you to glare daggers at him, "I'm touch starved."
You blinked once, twice, trying your hardest to process both his honesty, and the logistics of his request.
"Why not ask for a hug, then? Or, I don't know, go to therapy?"
"Hah! I'm sure my therapist is gonna have a field day with me! So, my dad, a demon, disappeared without a trace, then my mother and twin brother died, but actually my brother is alive somewhere. My therapist is gonna need a therapist."
"Okay, okay, you made your point. Still, you could just rephrase it. Maybe leave out the demon bit." You wiped the barrel clean before setting it aside.
"I'd rather get punched. Now, please."
"Dante, a punch isn’t gonna solve it. Are you sure you don’t want a hug? I could cook you something. Or we could grab a few beers and watch a movie, or talk about your feelings." You shrugged.
Both of you had done this before — went out for drinks, danced, cooked together, fell asleep together — it was so intimate, almost like you were a couple. But the reality was that you weren’t. Not by a long shot. Unfortunately for you, Dante was protective of you in the way an older brother was. You thought that, perhaps, he missed Vergil so much that you were the closest thing he had to a sibling in years.
"A punch would be less time consuming. Cooome on, babe, just hit me!"
You hated when he called you babe. He called other girls babe, girls that were hot, pretty, girls that were his type, and it was the nickname that made you clench your jaw and purse your lips.
"Ugh, fine!" You sat up, rotated your wrist and flexed your fingers. "Are you sure this is going to help in any way?"
"Positive. Right here." Dante pointed at his cheek.
"What, in your face?"
"You're stalling."
Without a single ounce of hesitation you swung your arm, hitting the demon hunter square in his face, but it caused you more pain than it did him, and you stumbled back, holding your fist in your other hand.
"Son of a fucking bitch!" You cried out in pain, knowing damn well that would happen. Still, you couldn't say no to him. Ever.
"Are you okay?" Dante was visibly concerned — a rare sight since he was always cool and edgy, even when his own life was in danger.
"Fuck no! Feels like I punched a brick wall!" You practically growled at him, gaze quickly softening when you saw the pure look of terror in his eyes. "But hey, nothing a little ice can't fix, right?"
"Right." He nodded and got up, making a beeline for the freezer.
There was no ice in it, but there was a pack of frozen peas somewhere at the bottom of a drawer, which Dante picked up and brought to you. When you reached for it, he, instead, took your sore hand in his, gently pressing the cold legumes onto your knuckles. You winced, instinctively trying to retract your hand, but he held it in place, his fingers wrapped around your wrist to stop you from backing away.
The pain wasn't gone, but it was becoming bearable, and a relieved murmur escaped past your lips, one that sounded closer to a moan than a sigh. Dante's cheeks burned, tinted red with embarrassment and arousal because you were yet another girl in his life who just didn't want to be involved romantically with him. Not that he tried anything with you, because he always thought you deserved better. Sure, he was cocky and flirtatious, but he wasn't a dick. If no one reciprocated the flirting, he didn't push his luck. It was simple. And he wasn’t the type who did one-night stands, despite the rumours. Dante enjoyed having a connection to the people he took to bed, he became sexually attracted to those he knew on a deeper emotional level. But sometimes, when he was really, truly desperate, he would download Tinder and hook up with random girls.
And he reeked of desperation.
"Dante, you can let go of my hand now."  You told him, part of you hoping he wouldn't.
Who could blame you? He was an objectively attractive man, with a charming smile and a body sculpted by the gods themselves. Why would he ever want to get involved with you? Dante was your opposite — he talked, he sang, he danced, he was obnoxious. You were quiet, most of the time, and shy. In fact, when he first met you, he thought you had some form of speech impediment, with your nose in Boccaccio’s The Decameron, a book you stole from the public library because you were much too young to read. That’s when knew you were trouble, just like him.
"Yeah, of course." Dante stepped back. "How's your hand?"
"Better. How are you feeling?"
"Me? Why are you asking?"
"Hello?" You scrunched your nose and frowned. "You wanted me to punch you because you were touch-starved. Did it help?"
"I'll be honest, it felt more like a tickle than anything." He shrugged. "Are you sure you didn't pull your punch?"
There it was, the one thing that turned you from an introvert to a bat-shit crazy bitch — his stupid little mouth that he opened without ever thinking.
"Are you fucking kidding me? You're telling me I risked breaking my bones so you could feel better, only for you to not feel anything? I swear to fucking God, Dante, this is the last time I'm doing anything nice for you."
"Nice? You punched me!" He threw his hands up in exasperation, while your blood boiled inside of you, sending you into a blind rage.
"You asked me to punch you, you maniac! You should've fucked me instead!"
Your eyes widened at the sentence that came out of your mouth without a single thought, mortified at your own stupidity.
"Hugged. I meant hugged. Shit."
"No, no, hold up, you didn't say hugged." Dante tilted his head, one hand rubbing his chin. "Isn't that called a Freudian slip?"
"I- well- how the fuck do you even know what a Freudian slip is?" You tried changing the subject but he didn't bite.
"Google." He closed the gap between the two of you, and for the first time you felt intimidated by him. "Do you want me to fuck you?"
The bluntness of his question, coupled with the sudden change in the pitch of his voice made you feel like a cornered prey. There was no possible way he was serious. But he wasn't wrong — the nature of your jobs made it impossible for either of you to have partners, and besides, you've known each other for years. It was only natural that some form of physical attraction would have developed between you two, right? But why you? Why now? And the worst of all your questions, why not?
You didn’t want to think about how this would ruin almost a decade of friendship. All you could think about was the look of pure lust in his eyes as he held your gaze, and how months upon months of sexual frustrations accumulated inside of you, bubbling and boiling and exploding when you dropped the pack of peas on the floor.
"Yes. I want you to fuck me."
Without a sliver of hesitation, you felt him pick you up with ease, hands roaming up and down his back as he slammed you down onto the table, desperately pushing away all the guns and knives. How thoughtful of him. Your hands slithered under his blood red coat while he tugged at your t-shirt, pulling it over your head to expose your bare breasts to him.
"No bra? Kinky." Dante stopped to take a better look at you.
"Stop talking." You firmly told him, but the chuckle that erupted from your throat betrayed you.
He was the one person you felt most comfortable around, so much so that you didn't feel weirded out by him pressing his lips onto your neck, or his fingertips bruising the plush of your hips, or his tongue flicking over your sensitive nipples. No, it felt natural, too natural, like your skin was made to be touched by him.
With his coat on the floor, you tackled his shirt, effectively tearing it off of him because you were just as desperate as he was, and Dante pulled your body closer to his, your clothed cunt accidentally rubbing against the bulge in his trousers. You were aching from the lack of sex, and you uncontrollably moaned at the tiny bit of friction before mumbling a weak 'sorry.'
"Fuck, don't be. That's actually kind of hot." He shamelessly admitted, and you rose a brow.
"Yeah? Then you wouldn't mind me doing it again?" You chewed on your lower lip, but he could see past the fake innocence when you rolled your hips, frantically and feverishly rubbing your clit through the layers of fabric. "Shit, I could come just from this."
For a split second, Dante wondered if this was all real. What happened to your shyness? How was it possible that his best friend, the quiet, nerdy girl he'd known for such a long time, was worse than any demon he'd ever encountered? Not that he was a saint. Far from it, because when you threw your head back, desperate to climax, his is eyes darkened, black seeping into his sclera. It should've made you afraid, but it had the opposite effect. The thought that he could activate his Devil Trigger and quite literally snap you like a twig turned you on.
"Do it, then." Dante's hand snaked behind the back of your neck, forcing you to look at him. "Show me just how needy you are."
Beads of sweat trickled down your forehead as you fucked yourself on the half-demon, fog settling in your brain with each breath, each movement, each beating of your heart. Faster. Harder. Faster. Harder. Faster.
"Oh-" Any sentence you tried to utter stopped in your throat, replaced by a string of whimpers and curses. Whatever you were trying to babble was reduced to incoherent words.
"Well shit, I didn't know you were such a filthy little slut."
"Just- oh- shut up-"
"Hmm, I don't think you really want me to shut up." Dante sneered when you picked up the pace. "I think you like it when I talk like this."
"N-not true!" You yelped as he pinched your nipple, barely doing anything and yet you were a mess already.
"So, you don't want me to call you a fucktoy, then? Bet you're dripping right now. Bet you want me balls deep inside of you."
"Fuck, I'm gonna come!" You proved his point when your entire body quivered under his, mind blank and vision blurry.
"There, there." Dante pressed his lips onto your forehead. "I got you."
The noise of his belt unbuckling made you snap your eyes open, filling you with newfound desire and guilt — poor Dante, his cock was probably aching by now while you had the time of your life. He stepped back, letting his trousers pool at his feet, and you lifted your skirt to peel your panties off. You caught him staring at you, taking the sight in, and what a sight it was — locks of hair fell out of your bun, sticking to your sweaty temples, your legs still shaking from the orgasm, and your cunt dripping wet.
"I'd love to eat you out, babe, but my balls are genuinely gonna explode." He confessed, earning a giggle from you. Even with his eyes pitch black and his Devil Trigger on the verge of activating, Dante was still Dante. And you loved that about him.
"Hurry up and fuck me, then."
"Are you that desperate that you forgot your manners?" He dug his fingertips into the plush of your hips, violently pulling you closer to him.
"Please hurry up and fuck me?" You pouted.
"Good girl, that's better." Dante pushed your leg to the side with his elbow, dragging his cock up and down your slit.
You didn't get the chance to take a look at it, but the tip felt huge, so much so that you gasped, propping yourself on your elbows to see better, and you were not disappointed. In fact, you were concerned. You could not take it.
"Dante, it's not gonna fit."
He shook his head with a half-smile, finding your concern quite cute.
"I'll make it fit."
It was both a promise and a threat, but you trusted him. God, you trusted him with your life. He slowly and gently pushed the tip, your slick more than enough to lubricate his cock, but he stopped every time you looked uncomfortable to make sure you were okay.
"Tell me if it's too much."
"No, you can- it's fine, keep going." You closed your eyes, the discomfort causing you to clench around him instead of relaxing, which made Dande forget how to breathe or think.
But the worst came to a halt when he was fully in, stopping briefly to allow you to accommodate to the size. Your breathing went back to normal soon enough, and the last ounce of pain in your body was swiftly replaced by a surge of electricity when Dante moved, slowly and softly rolling his hips, unable to abstain any longer. And you didn't want him to when his cock filled you up so good, reaching places you didn't even know existed inside of your body. Your fingernails dug into his back, clawing at his skin with desperation and impatience, like you needed more than what he was already giving you.
"See? I told you I’ll make it fit. And you take me so well." Dante said, dragging his mouth over your neck, your scent overloading his senses.
But it just wasn't enough. No matter how painful, you wanted it-
"Harder."
Assertive, demanding, you wrapped your legs around his waist, and he pulled back to look at you, as if not believing your request.
"A minute ago, you were wriggling in pain, now you want it harder?"
"Yes." There was no hesitation. "I want it harder, faster, please-"
You were shushed by two digits forcing open your mouth, and you instinctively wrapped your lips around them, sucking obediently.
"You talk too much." He gave you a taste of your own medicine. "Should've known you were just a dumb little cocksleeve."
The degrading words caused you to moan and drool around his fingers, tears welling up in your eyes. Each thrust had you clench tighter, the tip of his ridiculously large cock punishing your cervix. Pain and pleasure bubbled inside of you, sparking through your body as Dante practically ripped his fingers from your mouth, only to wrap them around your throat. He was a hungry man, and you were dinner — arching your back to get closer, deeper, you fucked yourself on his cock with his name spilling from your lips like a prayer, and he revelled in your worship.
"Shit, you like it when it hurts, don't you?" He whispered, squeezing harder while you nodded eagerly. "Of course you do."
Of course you did. How could you not when he fucked you so good that your dignity and modesty were long forgotten? When Dante stripped you of your decency to bring out the worst in you? You felt your second orgasm build up, causing you to twitch under him, eyes rolling back as you slipped your hands under his arms, holding on for dear life.
"Again- gonna come again, Dante! Fuck!"
"Atta girl." He held your quivering body, his own hips stuttering, brutally thrusting into you with raw, animalistic passion.
You came undone on his cock, fingers carding through his hair, pushing away white locks to look at his pretty eyes while his arm slithered under your lower back to both support you and bring you closer to him. Dante was close, his throbbing cock still stretching your sore cunt out. He bucked his hips, splitting you open while you latched your arms around his neck, tits pressed against his chest and your lips ghosting over his earlobe.
"Almost there, babe." Dante promised. "You're doing so well." He pulled back, nearly on edge, but you squeezed your legs tighter around his waist.
"Don't pull out." You demanded, and that was enough to help him reach enlightenment.
He filled you up, and when he did pull out, watching his cum slowly leak out of you, you could've sworn he whispered 'marry me' under his breath. Surely it was just the brain fog, or the post-orgasm high. Your whole body was numb, and you stumbled into Dante's arms when you tried to get down from the table, muscles sore and aching.
"You wanna get pizza?" He nonchalantly asked, as if he didn't just fuck his best friend.
"I- shouldn't we talk about this?" You avoided looking into his eyes, opting to stare at the floor instead.
"About what?"
God, he was either insufferably oblivious or remarkably good at pretending.
"Us." You sighed.
"What's there to talk about?" Dante's fingers found your chin, and he gently lifted it up, forcing you to look at him.
"Don't make this harder for me, please. You know things won’t be the same now. We’re not in a relationship and-"
"I don't follow." Confusion was written all over his face. "Do you not want to be my girlfriend?"
"Girl- I- hold up, what? Do you want me to be your girlfriend?" You tilted your head, baffled by his question, because of course you wanted to. You just never had the guts to admit that you like him. It was even more shocking that he liked you back. Wasn’t this all just a one-time thing?
"I mean, I thought it was pretty obvious when I fucked you. What, you thought I nut and dip? That I shoot a load and go back on the road? That I cum n go?"
"Wow, please never use those euphemisms ever again." You cringed at his words, trying your best to hide the smile that crept on your lips.
"Christ, babe, you know I don't do one-night stands unless I’m really desperate. And here I thought you were my best friend. Guess I was wrong." Dante gasped, dramatically feigning offence by placing a hand on his chest.
"I’m not your best friend anymore." You said, voice serious and cold, and his charade was quickly replaced by actual worry and offence. "I'm your girlfriend now. And your best friend."
"Okay, I was genuinely concerned. Fuck you." He flipped you off and you sneered.
"You already did."
"Wait, that's my line!"
"Skill issue."
