Baby Teeth by Meg Grehan
Tumblr media
Today's sapphic book of the day is Baby Teeth by Meg Grehan!
Summary: "A unique verse novel of queer love, lust, and vampires. From the award-winning author ofΒ The Deepest BreathΒ andΒ The Space Between.
The blood Feeds the hunger That threatens everything
It starts when Claudia offers her a yellow rose. Immy has been in love before – many times, across many lifetimes. But never as deeply, as intensely as this. Claudia has never been in love this before either. But then, this is her first time with a vampire. The forbidden thirst for blood runs deep in Immy. Dreaming Of You In Violets | OCs Samantha & Bo
a/n: Samantha and Bo are two characters I made for their original story called Burnt Sugar which is completely different from their new story Dreaming Of You In Violets. I love my babies so much and want to share them here. It's just little snippets of their lives I'll be sharing. In Dreaming Of You In Violets, their book I'm slowly writing. Samantha and Bo go from Strangers to Friends To Lovers. If you want, you can ask me stuff about my OCs. πŸ₯Ί
Snippet 1: the world moves a little slower when i'm with her.
Samantha
When I'm with Bo, the world moves a little slower when I'm with her. Time slows too. We sit on the back of her trunk in a half-empty Walmart parking lot sharing a cigarette, her fingers brushing mine when she passes it to me. While I smoke a couple of puffs, I stare at her fingers; they are slender, and her nails are short from all the bitting she does, she tries to keep them pretty with dark red nail polish, but she only picks away at the polish. She wore a golden wedding band that belonged to her mother and the initials of her father were tattooed on the side of her index finger. Her parents left her, but she still held little pieces of them close to her.
She rubbed her fingers against her blue denim jeans, and I wondered how her fingers would feel rubbing against me. The pad of her thumb gently pushing against my bottom lip or the soft dragging of her fingertips against my skin, stopping every so often to trace her name in the spots she wants to kiss later. I want to kiss all ten of her fingers. I want to make her face grow warmer.

Belle of the Ball Review
Belle of the Ball by Mari Costa
CW: Cheating, Toxic Relationship, Struggles with Grades, College Acceptance Stress, Vomit, Underage Drinking, Accidental Underage Drinking, Classism, Social Anxiety, Gossiping, Manipulation, Cursing, Break-Up
5/5
It'd been too long since I had sat down and gotten lost in a good graphic novel, so thank you Belle of the Ball for breaking that fast. Mari Costa whisked me away to her world for a few hours and I couldn't be happier! This book was dedicated to the gay kids who were obsessed with High School Musical in middle school, a category I'm proudly a part of. I was promised relationship drama, school sports, and kids that don't realize how rich they are. All were delivered with so much more in store!
Belle of the Ball is the story of three high school queer girls with very messy love lives. Chloe and Regina have been dating on and off for several years, but they are the "It Couple" as far as the cheer squad is concerned. Hawkins is the school mascot and secretly a huge nerd, and while she prefers to stay under the radar, she asks Regina out to the Fall dance. Regina tells her that Chloe and her are currently dating, but befriends her instead. Will love be able to bloom in this stressful high school environment? Will it matter that Hawkins and Chloe have a forgotten history?
Reviewing graphic novels gives me the chance to talk about visual arts and put both my Art History Minor and my Graphic Design Certificate to use. An unfortunate feature of thick graphic novels is that you're going to miss the middles of some great 2-page spreads. I can tell that Costa knows this because she follows these up with insert shots and montages that better explore the scene. The whole book is done in a pink gradient color palette, which is very pretty and was potentially chosen to reflect the themes of femininity in Belle of the Ball. Overall, the art style is cute, playful, and pairs nicely with the story it's being used to tell.
Belle of the Ball is beautifully diverse, truly living up to its dedication and taking it further than a DCOM would dare to go, even now. I mentioned that a main theme of the book is femininity, but please keep in mind that there are many different ways to be feminine. Chloe sees herself as both the princess and the knight, Regina loves dresses and makeup and proving that women can do it all, Hawkins longs to be the brave little princess she once was. This graphic novel is queer, body positive, racially diverse, super feminist, and even Jewish! All very worth the wrist and finger pain I have from holding the novel!
If you enjoy stories of love finding its way in unexpected places and queer nerds who could use a day to relax, Mari Costa's Belle of the Ball should absolutely be on your TBR list. This book can make you laugh, sigh, and hold your breath in anticipation. Reading this will be soul cleansing!

I just finished reading If You Still Recognize Me by Cynthia So and it was SO CHARMING BUT ALSO SO, SO LOVELY. I cried several times reading it, but especially toward the end. :')
I wouldn't say this is a review (yet - I might write one on TheStoryGraph) but, to me it serves as proof that people can write realistic novels about people engaging with fandom (online fandom, even) and it's still GOOD! But being a queer YA novel written by a nonbinary Hong Kong Briton author certainly added a lovely perspective to it. πŸ’–
I also have to say that within the first few pages of it, I thought, 'Ergh, this grammar is kind of annoying. I don't think this book will be for me,' but I gave it a chance and I apparently pretty quickly got over the grammar that initially annoyed me because the story itself was so lovely, and the characters were all compelling enough. It was pretty predictable, though, so if people want to read a more mysterious book, I would not recommend it. LOL But I was fine with it. It was enjoyable to me. :D I'm probably going to end up reading whatever else Cynthia So writes, because their handling of the story and the characters was so nice that I'd be interested to read their style on behalf of other stories they write (or at least I hope they do write more!).

Sorry if this is already listed somewhere, but do you have any good recommendations for wlw "new adult" type stuff? I'm pan (and ace) and desperately want some good wlw rep, especially for my own labels but I'm aware I probably can't be too picky. I used to read a ton of YA, but I'm over the high school drama bs, and full adult novels tend to not hold my attention because, quite frankly, they take too much energy that my ADHD brain doesn't have.
If this was answered elsewhere, sorry πŸ˜… and thank you in advance for any rec's!!
I am an absolute fan of New Adult, so I am so excited to share some of my recommendations for it!

Coven by Jennifer Dugan
Tumblr media
Today's sapphic book of the day is Coven by Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton!
TW for murder mentioned in summary
Summary: "Emsy has always lived in sunny California, and she'd much rather spend her days surfing with her friends or hanging out with her girlfriend than honing her powers as a fire elemental. But when members of her family's coven back east are murdered under mysterious circumstances that can only be the result of powerful witchcraft, her family must suddenly return to dreary upstate New York. There, Emsy will have to master her neglected craft in order to find the killer . . . before her family becomes their next target."
