Happy World Storytelling Day
Here's a story that I made.
Once upon a time in the lush, green meadows of the Doughnut Kingdom, there lived a rabbit family with a lineage as noble as their names were peculiar. Lord Cabbage and Lady Bagel were renowned throughout the land for their wisdom and kindness. Their two children, Cucumber and Almond, were as adventurous as they were clever. But their world was about to be turned upside down by the nefarious plans of the evil Cosmo.
Cosmo was a mad scientist who dwelled in the shadowy depths of the Enchanted Forest, plotting mischief and chaos at every turn. With his dark magic, he sought to spread fear and despair across Doughnut Kingdom, casting spells of darkness wherever he went.
One sunny morning, Princess Nautilus, Cucumber's girlfriend, came rushing to their burrow with urgency in her eyes. She bore grim news: Cosmo's dark influence had begun to seep into the heart of Doughnut Kingdom, corrupting the once vibrant meadows and plunging them into shadow.
Determined to protect their homeland and loved ones, Cucumber, Almond, and Princess Nautilus embarked on a daring quest to confront the evil sorcerer. Armed with courage and a sprinkle of magic, they journeyed through the Enchanted Forest, facing treacherous obstacles and cunning traps laid out by Cosmo.
But as they ventured deeper into the heart of darkness, they realized that defeating Cosmo would require more than just bravery. They needed unity, ingenuity, and the power of friendship. Together, they devised a plan to outsmart the sorcerer and restore light to Doughnut Kingdom.
With Cucumber's sharp wit, Almond's keen intellect, and Princess Nautilus's unwavering determination, they confronted Cosmo in his lair. A fierce battle ensued, sparks flying as magic clashed with magic. But in the end, it was the strength of their bond that proved to be their greatest weapon.
As the sun rose over the meadows once more, Doughnut Kingdom was bathed in a warm, golden light, dispelling the darkness that had threatened to consume it. Cosmo, defeated and vanquished, retreated into the shadows, his evil schemes thwarted by the courage and resilience of Cucumber, Almond, and Princess Nautilus.
And so, peace was restored to Doughnut Kingdom, thanks to the valiant efforts of three brave rabbits who dared to stand against the forces of darkness and emerged victorious, their hearts filled with hope and their spirits shining bright as the morning sun.

Happy world storytelling day!
Let’s get a story going for world storytelling day: everyone reblog with one sentence each that propels the story onward and let’s see what this hellsite (lovingly) comes up with!
I'll start:
Once upon a time, there was a lone, yellow flower in a still green field.

call me an idiot but i do not get what grand purpose the corinthian serves as a nightmare like. what deep fear does he illustrate? does humanity need reminding that hot men may carve out your eyes and eat them?

as random trivia, Jetkaiser and VesalBlood actually kind of exist around the same time, if you assume that they're both descended from a world with otherwise similar chronology
VesalBlood experienced a more catastrophic sort of flesh magic imperialism that completely erased existing power structures more or less immediately, while Jetkaiser had those power structures linger for as long as they could possibly manage before collapsing in on themselves
one had a dark age of destroyed information at the hands of a sort of "flesh alchemist nightmare war leading into a biotechnotheocratic data apocalypse", while the other had information-worshipping cults that preserved everything they could for as long as possible in hopes they could one day restore the world from before the god-like entity manifested
VesalBlood has three enormous church entities (one a bit nondenominational) fighting for scraps in a dying system, Jetkaiser has a bunch of ostensibly allied corporate conglomerates competing in a neverending game of hyperexpansionist colonialism and proxy wars
while Jetkaiser is about carving up the pieces of a dead god to power this horrifying future, VesalBlood is about desperately trying to create something to fill a god-shaped hole that was seemingly always there, at the expense of ever feeling like enough has been done
the Third Cycle isn't the same as the Eternal era, but they're like... cousins who somehow ended up looking more like each other than their actual siblings.

I am once again losing my mind.
This time: I went to look up references of Varric, and just typed "Varric Tethras" into the search bar. I was going to just tab over immediately to the images section, eyes barely glancing over the obvious top-result fandom wiki, then (more entertainingly, but still expected) Wikipedia link-
but. but the next one.
Tumblr media
GOODREADS??
.... There's absolutely no tongue-in-cheek in the entry either.
(of course I immediately clicked on it who do you think I am)
There are 3 quotes from him relating to storytelling, both from 2 and Inquisition, as well as a book attribution:
Tumblr media
The Dragon Age Novel Edition of Hard in Hightown.
ATTRIBUTED TO VARRIC TETHRAS.
with Mary Kirby*~
Tumblr media
Absolutely unblinkingly written summary/bio.
I love this with my whole heart. Varric you beautiful bastard -- and DA writers/editors (Mary Kirby very much most importantly included) you even more beautiful, dorky, wonderful bastards.
---
*if you're not in the know, Mary Kirby is a cornerstone of the DA writing team, including being the one who was in charge of Varric (and Merrill!). To say she's his "trusted human confidante" is certainly putting it one (delightful) way.

May-June 1948. One of the most brutal Golden Age Batman stories is this bleak entry from WORLD'S FINEST COMICS #34, an atypically dark tale by Edmond Hamilton and Dick Sprang, about the rise and fall of a ruthless hired killer. Unusually, the story begins by revealing that the killer is already dead, an unidentified body on a slab in the morgue, and flashes back to his earlier life:
Tumblr media
Even if you're willing to allow that Durfee's love of guns "should have been normal and healthy," the sadism and sociopathy on display here doesn't speak highly of the parenting skills of Jim's father. Yikes.
If you watch a lot of older film noir, this flashback sequence might seem somewhat familiar. I'm reasonably certain that it was inspired by a 1940 MacKinlay Kantor short story called "Gun Crazy," originally published in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. About a year and a half after this story was published, Kantor and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo adapted "Gun Crazy" into the screenplay for a movie of the same title, directed by Joseph H. Lewis and released by United Artists in early 1950. "Gun Crazy" is also the story of a young man (called Nelson Tare in the original story) whose love of guns eventually leads to his destruction, although both the story and the film present their protagonist in a more sympathetic light than Hamilton does. As we soon see, Durfee is a monster:
Tumblr media
Durfee decides to offer his services as a hired killer to gangster Pete Goro, being careful not to let Goro know his real name or even what he looks like. After completing several jobs for this new client, Durfee accepts a thousand dollars from another gangster to kill Goro, although to maintain his reputation, he still carries out his last commission for Goro: killing Gotham district attorney Tim Logan. Meanwhile, Batman, who has learned how Durfee's potential clients contact him, but nothing that would identify the killer, attempts to lure Durfee into the open by anonymously hiring him to kill Bruce Wayne!
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin are unsuccessful in capturing the wily assassin, but when Durfee realizes that he's failed to kill Bruce Wayne, his pride leads him to try again on the grounds of the newly opened county fair. Batman manages to decoy him with a Bruce Wayne dummy, but Durfee knocks Batman momentarily senseless with the wooden stock of his gun and loses himself in the crowd. Then:
Tumblr media
So, Durfee is finally shot dead by a random cop who has no idea who he is, for a crime he hasn't actually committed. He then ends up buried in an anonymous grave, and even Batman never knows his real name. A very grim drama indeed, and a story that seems more suited to the gritty crime comics of the period, like CRIME DOES NOT PAY or Simon & Kirby's JUSTICE TRAPS THE GUILTY for Prize, than the relatively sedate WORLD'S FINEST. The cover of this issue, incidentally, sports this light-hearted Win Mortimer illustration of Batman, Robin, and Superman having fun:
Tumblr media
(The other stories in this anthology issue aren't especially dark or violent, but it's still a little jarring!)

Story Prompt 59
Under the warm embrace of the sun, a young woman took a seat beside a man on a bench in the park. The man's gaze remained fixed ahead, his expression carrying the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Startled by the intrusion, he turned to regard the woman, her presence stirring a flicker of curiosity within him.
"Beautiful day, huh?" she remarked, breaking the silence with a gentle smile.
"Mm," he murmured in response, his voice heavy with weariness.
Their exchange hung in the air, a delicate dance of words amidst a backdrop of silence. His eyes scanned the surroundings, observing the fear that gripped those nearby. His hands remained hidden within his pockets, fingers toying with something concealed within.
"What's your name?" she inquired, her voice soft and inviting.
He hesitated before replying, "Why do you want to know?"
"Because I'm tired of being strangers," she replied with a playful grin.
He shifted uncomfortably, unable to meet her gaze. She was a vision of serenity, her presence a balm to his troubled soul. Despite his reservations, he found himself drawn to her.
"I can't," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Then I won't tell you mine," she countered, her laughter dancing on the breeze.
Their conversation ebbed and flowed, punctuated by moments of introspection. He marveled at her beauty, so familiar yet enigmatic. She, in turn, found solace in his company, a kindred spirit in a world fraught with uncertainty.
"Do you know who I am?" he ventured, his tone tinged with uncertainty.
"Of course," she replied cryptically.
"Then why ask my name?"
She offered no explanation, content to revel in the shared silence. As they sat side by side, he stole glances in her direction, captivated by her presence. She, too, found herself drawn to him, a sense of deja vu lingering in the air.
"You know I could hurt you, right?" he warned, his words tinged with regret.
"Dangerous? Perhaps. Hurt me? Not likely," she quipped, her laughter a melody in the quietude of the park.
Their exchange took on a poignant tone, each word laden with unspoken meaning. He reached out tentatively, his fingers brushing against her cheek. She smiled in response, a wistful expression in her eyes.
"It's time to let me go," she whispered, her form beginning to fade.
He watched helplessly as she vanished before his eyes, a ghost of his past slipping away into the ether. Alone once more, he was left to ponder the fleeting nature of love and loss in a world consumed by shadows.

All I can think of is that one cat from The House who was dancing to drum music. (Unfortunately I can't find a clip of it on YouTube. All I get is the dancing bugs scene. But the music that cat was dancing to would almost fit his dancing.)

i've been. exceptionally slow at working my way through Spring in Hieron, because i find i'm needing to focus a lot more on work projects than usual.... but the upside of that is that instead of getting emotionally sucker-punched by podcasts in my cubicle, i get to cry over podcasts in the kitchen while getting ready for work in the morning!
(anyway i finished SiH 5 today and was quietly devastated by the Hadrian-Samothes conversation at the end)
