Batgirl 2000
Hush
Court of Owls
Batman Black Mirror
Batman/Nightwing: Bloodborne
Batman Cataclysm
Batman No man's land
Batman Prodigal
Absolute series
Batcomics Recs pls
My exams are over for the year 🎉
And it's been a long time since I read comics so any and all batcomics recs are welcome since it's been long enough that I won't mind re-reading the few comics I've read before either! I wouldn't mind other dc comics recs either and thanks in advance!
Edit: Asking for recs because I am willing to get my heart broken by good stories but would rather not be left in tears of frustration because of poor writing/characterisation 🥲 pls

Oh thanks so much for the recs! 💛

Idea of Batman: Yeah so batman is a character who turned to vigalantisim and fights crime after witnessing the death of his beloved parents and other traumas in his childhood, also because the system is corrupt and didn't do anything to improve and he wishes the help gotham become a better city, and on the way he gains a family again which he loves honestly but after being alone for so long he makes mistakes but he still is grateful for his family and doesn't think he deserves them because of his deep rooted hatred for himself which begun as child blaming himself for his parents deaths. He doesn't want to kill anyone because of his traumas and because his belives that a person can change for the better. You can see that his actions are because of compassion.
Dc writers: WHAT IF HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY FEELINGS CAUSE FEELINGS AND WEAAAK ,WHO DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE AND HES A BIG STRONG MACHO MAN WITHA SUPER DEEP VOICE WHO WANTS TO BEAT PPL UPPPP AND ITS ABOUT THE MISSION (even IF the mission is making a positive change)HE WOULD BE SUCH A BADASSS 🤓🤓☝️

Bruce Mourning Jason
A Death in the Family concludes in Batman #429. In Batman #436, Dick Grayson comes to Gotham to track down Bruce out of concern for his wellbeing following Jason's death; through/with Dick over the next several issues, directly leading into A Lonely Place of Dying, we get a devastating picture of the toll grief has taken. But these panels from Batman #430, 431, and #432, the three issues that immediately follow DITF, are equally gutting. No revisionist "Jason was an angry/reckless Robin," just a father feeling the absence of his son all the time, in all places. i made myself cry putting this together, so you've been warned
Tumblr media
A conversation with Jim Gordon as Batman sets out to deal with a sniper. (Starlin/Aparo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trying to use "work" as a distraction....He'll get a nice fight with some League of Assassins later in the issue. (Priest/Aparo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...or something like penance (solving a cold missing persons case). (Priest/Aparo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comics rarely allow characters (or readers) to sit with the impact of monumental events for long. Though I will always hate that it happened, Jason's death is one of the exceptions, and I have to give DC credit for giving literal panel space for Bruce to mourn even as his world spun on.

If you're looking for dc comics I would recommend their newest absolute series. Particularly Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Martian Manhunter. The first 5 issues of Absolute Wonder Woman is a self-contained story that is really great.
Batman No Man's Land or Batman Prodigal to kill time?
Thx for the recs! I'll check them out
I have seen a lot of good stuff abt the absolute series

HC: Red Hood's goons find out his identity and pretty much adopt him as their kid.
Jason used to take care of the other kids in crime alley. He may have been just a kid himself but, it was an unspoken rule all of the kids knew - if you really need something (food, money, bills paid) you go ask the Todd kid and he will figure it out. Then he got adopted by Bruce Wayne but he never forgot them. He made Batman do more patrols through crime alley to make it safer. And, during his early days at Wayne Manor, he'd steal things from the Manor and sneak down to crime alley and hand them out. Eventually, Bruce and Alfred caught on. Bruce Wayne started sponsoring clothes and meal drives but Bruce and Alfred would also leave things out in the Manor for Jason to keep 'stealing' and handing out to the kids.
Then, Jason died. It wasn't just the Waynes that mourned. And they didn't just mourn the help, they mourned the child that never gave up, that fought for all of them, that didn't abandon them even when he got a way out of there.
Years later, Red Hood appears. He doesn't bother with a secret identity really - the only reason he continues wearing a mask after the reveal to his family is because revealing his identity will pretty quickly let the smarter villains discover the batfamily's identity too. And even at his maddest, he doesn't want them to deal with danger and the fall out... ok, not true he just never wanted to make Alfred to deal with such a mess too. But with the kids he grew up with? The ones he would still move heaven and earth to protect even if they weren't quite so young anymore? Sure he still wore his mask but they all recognised him within moments and he didn't do anything to stop that from happening or to convince them otherwise.
In the meantime, as he establishes his crime empire he doesn't just decree that you don't sell to kids, he hires people who will adhere to that and not try to make extra cash on the side (he had gotten pretty good at judging people and their intentions from his time on the streets) An unintentional result was a bunch of his men were the parents of the kids he took care of - not the ones who were abusive or intentionally neglectful assholes, the one who just weren't able to provide for/take care of their kids. His mind doesn't let him process the fact that so many of them remind him of his mother, the fierce determination in her eyes to take care of him before she started fading before his own eyes...
Now those goons get paid well by this mystery boss who has never taken of his mask in front of them. But a few of them notice just how relaxed they're usually cautious, street smart, children are around this scary mafia boss. The children never snitch of course but some of the goons put it together - their children act around this mystery man the same way they had talked about this Todd kid during his funeral and every year on his death anniversary. And since Red hood came, none of them were quite so sad on that day - in fact they all went to hang out with Red hood the entire day.
The thing about crime alley is you try your best to pay back your debts because the consequences of failure ... are not fun. But the people who you are indebted to but they don't ask for anything in return? You never fucking forget them or what you owe them. And so many of these men owed Jason for feeding and taking care of their children when they couldn't. So when they realise their mystery boss is the kid that took care of theirs like family? Yes he's technically a grown man now but that's their fucking kid ok.
During meetings and such - nothing changes. They aren't gonna treat him with any less respect, it's still very much "Yes boss" all around. But suddenly, whenever red hood hits the streets, his goons are hovering a little closer to him. Doesn't matter who they're fighting, they never back down unless red hood is out of danger - so what if they're facing of with the Bats today? They'd gladly get every one of their limbs broken before letting Batman lay a finger on their kid.
And during the down times? Suddenly his goons keep coming up to him with bottles of water and healthy snacks with muttered "It's a hot day boss", "Gotta keep ur energy up boss".
They ever find some doodle Jason drew lying around? They don't say a word to him but they're moving away important info about the next incoming delivery from their little noticeboard of crimes to pin it up - and every time anyone walks past it, it's mandatory that they talk about how impressive this doodle from a mystery person is. The first time this happens, Jason is mortified... for about 2 seconds before he starts feeling all warm inside. He still blushes furiously everytime he hears someone compliment his doodle (thank the lord for masks) but he finds himself forgetting to put away more and more of his doodles.
And hearing people compliment his doodles leads to him doodling more which leads to him letting himself find more time for his artsy side which leads to him getting back into plays. Which leads to him ending one of his meetings (in his low voice with his voice modulator) saying "I am putting on a Macbeth play.. I am the director, the children are acting. If any of you want to come, I can get you free tickets.." None of them ask for free tickets. Jason refuses to think about why he feels like burying himself again just because these people don't want to attend some stupid play he only put together because he wanted the children to have fun anyway...
Opening day rolls around and of course Jason has gone all out, he doesn't know how to do drama half way. And every one of the goons show up dressed in rental tuxedos, every one of them holding a bouquet for their children and one for Jason. When he asks, his voice suspiciously rough even past the voice modulator, why they didn't tell him they were coming, they explain that they didn't want to come for free- they wanted to pay, contribute to the earnings. If any of the children happened to see Jason having to take his mask off backstage because there were too many tears to drain properly, they never mentioned it. And no one who walked past his flat the next day asked why it was filled with flowers in vases and Jason furiously searching for ways to make these flowers live forever.
These plays become a regular thing, and Red Hood is now the full dramatic version of Jason Todd - just as vicious but with Shakespearean monologues and over the top dramatics included. Suddenly finding what his new place is with the bats doesn't feel as pressing anymore. Yes he wants to be a part of the family again, but he knows his place here as Red Hood and with his own.. new family forming here, he just isn't as desperate anymore.
-------------------------‐--------------------------------
No one says anything when Red Hood stops hiding it when the memories feel more real, the nightmares too close and the day a little too tough. If he walks in with his blanket still wrapped around him or hugging a plushie so tight it's about to burst, no one blinks an eye. That just means their kid needs a little extra help today. He gets a mug of hot chocolate dropped of with a understanding nod - the mug gets silently refilled whenever it runs low. If he stares off into space for too long, someone interrupts him with some easy work - ideally beating someone up. Everyone stays later that day and they have a movie night - either ratatouille or the grinch. At least one person stays long enough to tuck him in after he falls asleep on the couch.

Does anyone else think about the fact that realistically heroes who don't wear cowls/hoods/various head covering and have secret identities have to wear hair nets so that they don't accidentally leave hair where they fight crime?
Cause cmon everyone sheds hair right? Their hair doesn't just stop dropping cause they're superheroes.. so yes as far as I'm concerned, any superhero we see with their hair out is actually wearing a hair net from here on out.
... I have no idea how to tag this.

Also, to add onto this, it's actually worse cos it's not even the same thing!!!
GenAI steals art, it's main goal is to generate "new" things and mimic humans
Machine Learning AI (irc) is helping save lives by helping with diagnosing stuff like cancer earlier
But people just lump them all together and say AI is a part of the future so we need to learn how to exist with it. Not true. So misleading wtf.
So yea it can't even eventually save the world or solve shit. Is just bad 🥲
I am so. fucking. tired. of AI being revered as some big fucking step forward for humanity. I’m tired of people acting as if it’s going to solve all of life’s problems, while turning around and using it to do the most mundane, creative, enjoyable and rewarding things.
oh? It’s going to solve cancer, complex mathematical equations, world hunger, economics, climate change? Yeah? But in the mean time, you’re using it to write books, newspapers, eulogies? You’re using it to make art, songs, clothing? All things which have always held inherent beauty due to the touch of humanity seen in them? It’s gonna solve world hunger, fix climate change, but in the meantime it’s used to generate brainrot images while its servers suck up so much money and power and water that it’s actively ruining the climate?
The other day my aunt ran into an old student of hers. He talked her into buying two books he’d written, then once the money was forked over, revealed it was ChatGPT
my mom is an author. A few months ago she found out that her books, and all books in the romance genre, were being fed to AI. To train its skills. She got no say in if her work was used for it
my dad got put in the newspaper, and he was excited about posing for the photo they took. Today he found out the entire article was written by ChatGPT.
my English teacher encourages us to use it to write poetry. To cite sources and make art.
when the fuck are people going to realize that it’s not funny? It’s not a joke? It’s not something to grin and present to someone, like, “I made this with AI! Look what it can do! We’re in the age of technology, and it’ll only get better from here!”
you can’t “make” anything with AI. You put that in there, you have no true hand in its creation. You are not an “ai artist”. You are an ai user, and a fucking ignorant person. being in the age of technology could have been a good thing. You twisted that by allowing the technology to take over the elements of your life you could have found the most happiness in.
it will not get better from here. People will rely on it like they rely on any crutch—to the point of muscle atrophy. The muscle in question? Their brain. And they won’t give a shit, becuase it’s making life easier. It’ll solve world hunger and fix climate change.

Omg omg and if the timelines match up that might mean clark meets Bruce in med school?!
(Might actually write this out as a au hc later)
Random thought but
I've never seen a Doctor Clark Kent AUs? How? Have I just not come across them?
This man has all the scans he'd need in his eyes - imagine he just becomes a doctor at his hometown and like everyone thinks he's one of those genius doctors who can diagnose shit easily without any scans when really he just scans people with his eyes? And he saves everyone so much money not having to order so many tests?

Does anyone else ever think about the transition it was for Batman to go from single child, heir to infinite fortunes, definitely grew up spoiled Bruce Wayne to accepting the chaos that was the Justice League Watchtower especially in its early days?
The Justice league tv show was my introduction to batman and dc as a whole. So, I think about it. About how, this was probably how Bruce learnt what the sibling experience was.
He absolutely gives off (not sure about oldest but) older sibling who is forced to hang out with the younger siblings he begged his parents not to have.
The whole "I'm a part timer remember?" gives off I might be ur sibling but I'm not going to let u drag me into ur stupidity
The growing realisation that he may not have went looking for friends but he found them and he'd drop anything to fight by their side and they would foolishly also do the same - same as when a tired older sibling realises just how much they love their little ones and how their heart melts when they realise the younger ones love them too
The episode with flash handling his city and rogues so gently - just batman being the older brother so proud of the younger one for turning out so good and kind despite all the shit they've been through. Every time he stared at Orion to shut him up - same vibe as I bully my siblings no one else bullies them.

Oh yeah no of course I agree that Jason needs some (a lot of) help and that dialogue was very much a fanon thing
But I was just specifically talking about everything time Batman crashes out over the fact that his kids wants to kill his murderer - and I feel like readjusting from the pit to finding his new version of normal would have been a whole lot easier if Batman would have stopped berating him (probably kindest way to put it) for wanting to kill the Joker.
Also random thought (and I don't know if they have ever done this) but I always wanted it to be a plot point (idk if for the jokes or srsly yet) that any superhero/vigilante decides they actually want to try therapy and then realise they can't do it properly because of their secret identity. I know Black canary was kind of a therapist to YJ but it would be so interesting to watch the adult heroes go through this
I refuse to accept that Bruce being mad at Jason for killing is canon. It makes no sense.
Batman can't kill. Sure partially because he never wants anyone to lose family like he did even if that family is criminal. But that doesn't apply to people like the Joker. Who's going to miss Joker? The people who he mentally broke? No, the reason batman doesn't kill people like the joker - truly purely vile and evil human beings is because than vengeance will swallow him and he knows it. He knows that if he crosses that line, he may not return. He'll want to kill every criminal who hurts someone. So, for the safety of Gotham, so that he doesn't become an overlord, he doesn't kill.
But that doesn't mean no one else can. So as far as I am concerned the canon version is:
Batman:*concerned that his son is killing and might lose himself and default to killing instead of trying to save* Don't kill the joker
Red hood:*kills Joker*
Batman:...
Red hood:...*doesn't just go around killing redeemable characters. Employs low level criminals and treats them fairly. Takes care of children in crime Alley.*
Batman:...ok. Alfred is making lasagna, wanna come home for dinner son?

Omgg they're so fucking cute 😍
Tumblr media
The bat girls if they meet early :D (batboys in here)
Cass(10) She was found early in the family, she still isn't comfortable with talking, but she understands it almost all. And she finds Steph and Barbara when they get to the library, one for searching books that she likes so she learns to read and second to get her slowly into public spaces. She really admires Barbara, and she loves how Steph talks even if it's loud it feels like music to her
Barbara(16) she works in the library, that's where they are right now, and that's where they mostly hang out, she is the one who brings the bracelets to the girls so "they are always connected"
Steph(7) she is the one that talks the most in her hangouts and she doesn't mind bc she knows she is being listened to and being there is also a way to not be in the house when her dad is around (she was the one to make the little braid in Cass hair)
