This is a drawing my friend made of me and my sister Soso, who is only four years old. We are part of a family of ten living in northern Gaza where the situation has been the most dire since the beginning of the genocide. Aid hasn’t entered the strip for weeks and all that’s left is insanely expensive. On top of that, we have to pay rent to avoid being homeless, we have many kinds of medicines to buy because we’re all sick, and Chuffed, PayPal and the bank all take big commissions before I receive any amount. So I have to keep asking for your help. I have no other choice, I can’t get a job, everything is destroyed.

Today I took two midterm exams for my engineering degree and I was so out of it, so hungry, exhausted and stressed, that I gave wrong answers to the most obvious questions. It’s been eating at me all day, I’m so frustrated that this is my life. And then we all rejoiced for the ceasefire only for the bombs to start raining again within a few hours. When will it stop? I’m so tired…

This is a recent story about my sister Soso who is only four years old. We are a family of 10 barely surviving in northern Gaza amidst famine and bombardments. It might seem unbelievable, but the cost of a 25kg sack of flour has reached $1,000 in my area. We also have to pay almost the same amount every month to rent the single destroyed room we have been living in for months. If we’re kicked out, it will be a death sentence.

I’m so hungry, I’m so hungry, I swear I’m dizzy all day long as I try to study for university midterms I might not even be able to take because my connection is unstable.

I wish the money I’ve already received was enough, I wish more than anything that I could stop asking because I’m so embarrassed, but everything is so expensive, we’re a family of ten, and both Chuffed, PayPal and the bank take huge commissions from any amount I receive. Any food we can find is for my grandmother and my youngest sister and the rest of us survive on barely anything. We have to pay for vitamins due to the lack of food, for medicine for my mother and grandmother who are very sick, for treatment for my brother who got hurt in an accident, for phone data, for everything. I’m so tired.

I’ve barely eaten anything in days. Yesterday, on my way to borrow a friend’s laptop for my university midterms, I fainted from exhaustion. I took my exams with blurry vision and a barely functioning mind. Pains that I hadn’t felt since the famine last year have reappeared in my body. I’m only 21 but it feels like I’ve lived a thousand lifetimes. In my area, the cost of one sack of flour has climbed up to $1,000 once again. On top of that, we still have to pay rent, genocide or not.

I wish the money I’ve already received was enough, I wish more than anything that I could stop asking, but everything is so expensive, we’re a family of ten, and both Chuffed, PayPal and the bank take huge commissions from any amount I receive. Any food we can find is for my grandmother and my youngest sister and the rest of us survive on barely anything. I’m so tired.

I wish I could get my degree, get a job and provide for my family, but that’s impossible now, impossible, and this is our only option. Flour has almost become extinct and the price of a bag will soon reach $1,000 again, just like last year, at the height of the famine, when all we could eat was grass and animal feed. Please don’t let us go back to the lowest point of our lives.

My whole family is experiencing dizzy spells all day long from the hunger. Soon I will go back to that sorry state I was in just a few months ago, when I fainted multiple times a day, every day. All of the food we can find goes to my grandmother and my youngest sister first, but the rest of us still need to eat. We are a family of ten rapidly starving in northern Gaza.

It’s rare to feel happy in northern Gaza. But the other day, my sister Soso made me smile.

It’s not a lie that sugar is expensive. 1kg is $80. Frying oil is $70. That donut was expensive to make, even without the sugar. But it’s okay. Even if it means the adults can’t eat, it’s okay. Soso was happy for a few hours. She’s only 4 years old yet her life is already so hard. She’s not growing properly due to malnutrition and trauma. Her mental health is in shambles, not at all how a child should be. Since birth, two wars have come very close to killing her, so we just want her to be happy.

Please help me make her happy every day. A few days ago, she was the happiest child in the world because she ate an apple for the first time in a year. That won’t happen again because fruits are too expensive, but I swear, she explodes with joy when we buy vegetables too. She is a child with simple dreams.
