At just 4 years old, my sister doesn’t understand the difficulty of the situation. When she’s hungry, why can’t we give her food? When it’s too hot or too cold, why can’t we put glass on the window? When she’s sick, why can’t we take her to the doctor? When she’s scared, why can’t we stop the bombs from falling? She doesn’t understand. Adults are supposed to solve everything.

Even I, as an adult, have a hard time wrapping my mind around a kilo of flour reaching $200, cash converters taking a 50% commission and a destroyed, unlivable room costing $1,300 every month. I can’t understand how no one has stopped this for two whole years. So what do we tell her? What do we tell the little ones?

I’m no different than you. I don’t long for war over peace, I’m not superhuman to bear the bombs, the famine, the heat, the loss of all sorts of comfort and of our dignity. I’m not more comfortable than you relying on other people’s money, much less asking for it. I can’t make my heart not hurt when my little sister cries from hunger.

Imagine you, a normal person, suddenly having to feed your family of 10 with a single kilo of flour (on a good day) that cost $200. Imagine the stress and humiliation of paying $1,300 a month for a room with no electricity, no water, no windows, that’s infested with mice and cockroaches. Could you bear it? We’re not handling the situation better than you would. We’re breaking apart and we keep living because we must.

We’re truly struggling to survive in northern Gaza. We’re at the mercy of the prices that keep rising up to $200 for one kilo of flour and $1,300 a month for the destroyed single room the ten of us live in. Add to that medicine, Internet fees, phone data, a turn on the phone charger, and you’ve still barely scratched the surface.

I truly hate asking for money but I can’t stop because our lives depend on it. Life in Gaza is hell and there are no jobs we can do to earn a living. We are a family of ten that includes my elderly grandmother and my four-year-old sister. Please don’t think that I keep asking you because it’s easy and comfortable. My name is Rawan and I’m trying to survive in northern Gaza with my family of 10.

Our priorities are my elderly grandmother and my four-year-old sister. Today, she told me “I’m tired of this whole life.” It broke my heart. She’s so young and doesn’t remember life before the genocide. She doesn’t understand that we’re powerless against the famine.

What is her fault? She used to cry about the silliest stuff or about a new shiny toy, now she cries because she goes to sleep hungry every night. She gets food in priority whenever we have some, but even giving her two meals a day requires a miracle. As for us, one meal every other day has become normal.

One kilo of flour is $100. The merchants only accept cash and the commission rate is around 50%. That means we would need $200 so my family of ten can get just one kilo of flour and still be hungry at the end of the day. And even then, we won’t buy a full kilo, because we need to secure rent too, which is $1,300 a month. That’s why we’re so hungry still.

Please help us. Even if you just have $5, even if you can only share, please do it. I swear we need help or we won’t make it.

IMAGINE YOU’RE IN GAZA

I don't want you to come live in my place in Gaza, I just want you, while staying where you are, to:

1. Eat canned food only for ten days.

2. Shower once a week or every ten days.

3. Give up gas for cooking and use plastic or wood instead, if you can find them.

4. Give up all your clothes except for one pair of pants and a shirt, and wear them for two weeks.

5. Forget about tap water, use containers to collect water from any source, regardless of its cleanliness. Accept to drink it knowing it will make you sick, because there’s nothing else.

6. Make your whole life one long queue lasting hours.

7. Try having your son or daughter ask for something, anything, and not be able to fulfill the request.

8. Try sleeping with your entire family on just two mattresses.

9. Try becoming a beggar for 48 hours.

10. Try sleeping somewhere and waking up to find yourself standing amidst rubble and smoke everywhere.

11. Try being shocked every day by news of a friend or relative passing.

12. Try walking everywhere in torn shoes.

13. Try drinking tea that tastes like plastic.

14. Try sleeping under all types of warplanes and drones.

15. Try sleeping while the sound of shelling and explosions is just a few hundred meters away.

16. Try eating your food while sharing it with flies.

17. Try sleeping and waking up to mosquito bites all over your body.

18. Don’t try all of that, just imagine it… just imagine.

19. Try sleeping in a tent, freezing at night, stung by ants and insects, and waking with the birds as the sun roasts you like shish tawook.

20. Try entering the tent at noon or leaving it in this kind of weather.

Have you tried it?

Just try to imagine enduring all of that… and imagine what it means for my family, with elders and small children, to live through worse, for two whole years.

Now imagine your only money comes from strangers online, and every day you must convince even more strangers that you’re in need and worthy of their help. Imagine being largely ignored. Imagine you’ve said everything there is to say about your life and it’s not enough. Imagine the humiliation, the embarrassment, the guilt of always needing to ask again.

Please don’t ignore us. Anything helps, I swear, even five dollars, even just sharing. Just please don’t pretend not to hear us calling for help.

I don’t know what to do anymore. It feels like I’ve said everything, shared my whole life and still we are starving. What else can I tell you that will convince you to help? How do you keep everyone fed when the priority is the $1,300 monthly rent? How do you finish your degree to hopefully find a job when you’re too malnourished to focus? How do you do any of that when everything is destroyed?

Why is everyone ignoring me? I’m here so someone can hear me. Does anyone see us? Why are you ignoring the rescue of 10 people from my family? Is that so hard for you? Did you think about what my sister Soso, who’s only 4 years old, is going through? Did you imagine what if she were your daughter or sister?! What would you do in that situation? HELP URGENTLY NEEDED

I’ve been crying because the negotiations have failed. There will be no truce. Like every single time a deal collapses, prices will rise again, even though they’re already unaffordable. My stomach is cramping from hunger. I’ve been unable to go to the workspace to work on my university final projects, because the dizziness becomes unbearable after just a few steps.

I look at my little sister, who’s not even five yet, who doesn’t remember life before the genocide, and I want to cry again. What will happen to her? How will we feed her? For how long? How do we explain to her why she goes to bed hungry every night? How do we make her forgive us for being unable to give her a happy life?

GAZA IS BEING EXTERMINATED!

What is the difference between Gaza and Auschwitz? Most families here are refugees who were kicked out of their homes and concentrated in the most densely populated area on earth, we can’t leave, we’ve always had guards shooting at us from the fences, now we’re being starved and executed at will. How are our emaciated bodies any different from those you see in history books?

People like to say “Imagine if Anne Frank had an Instagram account”, but we’re right here, on all kinds of social media platforms! There are thousands of diaries of Anne Frank telling the world about our situation and most of it goes unheard! Will my diary only be of value when it’s found after my passing? I need to be heard now! My family needs help now!!

Will people only feel sorry in ten years when they read that we went days without eating because one sack of flour ended up costing $2,000? That my eldest brother is battling sickness and getting weaker every day and that we’re terrified for him? Why not now?!

I swear I’m using all my energy just to hold my phone and write. I barely ever get up anymore because I’m scared of fainting and hurting myself. Food has become extremely rare and expensive. People have started dying of hunger.

We’re still able to survive thanks to donations. We buy food by the kilo. Rice, or lentils, or, when a miracle occurs, flour. One kilo for ten people. A DISASTER HAPPENED YESTERDAY

My three brothers were almost martyred. They were with us just a few minutes earlier and left in search of food. Then a deafening sound came from the street and I rushed to the window to see what happened. I saw all three of them lying motionless among the martyrs. I screamed for my mom, thinking they were dead, and we rushed to the site.

I swear I was convinced they were dead until we reached them. My younger brother, who was closest to the center of the massacre, was awake and mostly unharmed, saved only by a tree standing between him and the impact, but silent and frozen in shock. My older brothers were lying next to each other, injured. My parents rushed them to the tent that serves as a hospital.

They were both hit by the same piece of shrapnel. It went right through the younger’s hand and lodged itself inside the eldest’s hand, right against the bone. It was the first time I’ve ever seen him cry from pain. We spent what was left of our money to buy as many painkillers and antibiotics as we could, but it barely relieves them.

Our eldest brother needs surgery to remove the shrapnel from his hand, but the last surgeon was killed yesterday. My younger brother has a hurt knee due to a stone that fell on him and he’s still in shock, he hasn’t said a word since yesterday. All three of them are in pain and we’re powerless. Our youngest sister has never been so afraid. The whole family is shaken to the core, we truly believed we had lost all three of them at once.

It’s not the first time I’ve asked for help but we need you more than ever. They need medicine, they need food, and we will need money to pay for the surgery that can only happen when the war is over.
