I'm trying to see something
As a young person using a cane, I get a lot of people bringing up this guy Kaz Brekker from the teen book The Six of Crows unprompted. I'm wondering if this happens to all people with canes in English-speaking countries, or just me? I'm trying to understand the factors at play here.
Since the book is for kids and came out fairly recently, I'm saying it's more likely for people to say this if they're under 30.

Dear non-wheelchair users please try and learn these DOS AND DONTs because they are basic respect and necessary for our lives:
Ask me if I need help with a door: ✅
Ask me if I need help being pushed: ✅
Ask me if there is anything you can do in general (such as moving something): ✅
Ask me if I need help getting my chair in my car (if I am at my trunk): ✅
Come around a tall counter or desk to hand me something instead of passing it over the very tall counter or desk: ✅
(Medical professionals primarily), ask me if I need a cane or walker to properly transfer: ✅
When not in my chair ask to move my chair to a specific location: ✅
DON'T BE OFFENDED WHEN I SAY NO (to ANY of these): ✅
Compliment my chair or accessories: ✅
Alert me if something dropped from my wheelchair-attached bag: ✅
Grab my chair handle bars: 🚫
Ask to push me WHILE simultaneously reaching out for my handle bars before my answer: 🚫
Hold door open and then stand in door way: 🚫
Ask me why I am in my chair (unless it is imperative to your job): 🚫
When not in my chair, move my chair: 🚫
When not in my chair, move my chair with permission but to an unspecified location: 🚫
Move my chair without unlocking wheels: 🚫
Reach over my head for any reason: 🚫
Tell me you're sorry I'm in my chair: 🚫
Tell me you'll pray for me, because you see me in my chair: 🚫

Not being supportive of created “systems” isn’t dividing the community, it’s trying to push our oppressors out of spaces they don’t belong
Darling, created systems do not hold power over you, they are not a majority, they cannot oppress you because of that. That's not how you can use the term oppressors, you can claim their ableist, thats still factually wrong but ANYONE can be ableist, not ANYONE can be an oppressor unless they hold power over you.
They are apart of this community, and unfortunately as i cannot tell who you are, as you're on anon, i can only assume you are apart of a majority within system spaces (a singlet, a traumagenic system*, a endogenic noncreated system*). You are acting as the oppressor by kicking them out.
*not saying either of these hold power outside of system spaces, they do however, hold power within system spaces as they are more commonly accepted than created systems
I really wish i knew how they were oppressing you in the first place dear, they are not sending hate towards you like you are to them, they are not telling you you cannot be a system as you are to them. This is why it would be factually wrong to call them ableist either, they are merely existing, they do not affect you in any way, there fore their existence cannot be ableist.
Thats like claiming able bodied people simply existing is ableist to disabled people.
Or even worse, saying cane users are ableist towards wheelchair users for merely existing.
They are in the exact same boat as us, even if they got here by sailing a different route. They deserve to be in this community, you do not get to seperate us from them , you dont get that choice. You can however seperate yourself as a hateful person from the rest of us and personally, I'd prefer hateful people like you, out. Pro endogenic systems are not going to grovel at your feet as you split the community in half.
Sending my love out to created systems truely <3 stay strong out there
And remember we're stronger in numbers !!!
(if anything said here is incorrect do tell me, please provide evidence however as i will not be listening to those who don't! Unless evidence is obvious to research on my own )
Hoping this is simply trolling. But trolling like this still causes real harm to the community. So i will continue to give serious answers to every hateful message in my inbox.

hi, do you have suggestions for what kinds of thing to look for when looking for community food resources? i'm assuming not food banks, since those are the most affected by things like food shipment freezes? (i'm asking from the perspective of someone who can't do manual labor, which probably is different than someone physically abled since there's "grow your own" and "swap labor time for produce at a farm program" as options, but i'm sure some insight into how to find those options would also help for readers who do manual labor themselves and i'm not opposed to hearing about those as well. there's a pretty good manual-labor-for-produce program at a farm in my town, i've often wished they had stuff a full-time wheelchair user could benefit from because it's really cool!)
I get a lot of asks like this that seem to be trying to ask for advice about what they can do, but it is ALWAYS and EXCLUSIVELY framed from the perspective of the "can'ts" they have clearly already dismissed as possibilities before ever reaching out to me. This is. Becoming increasingly difficult to be patient with. Especially when there is an air of defensiveness to it where you already seem to know that the answers I will give are answers you will not interact with, even if you are, as you say, willing to hear about them.
I am having a hard time answering this question without becoming unreasonable to you, Anon, and I'm really going to try and manage that reaction in myself, but I need people to understand something.
Right now, there is a wheel chair parked in our garage near the car. This is because I have been reliant on it off and on for going on five years now. Right now as I type this I am dressed in three layers of high-compression medical garments so that it is AT ALL possible for me to even SIT UPRIGHT let alone stand. I am due for an infusion I cannot afford because my hypovolemia and malabsorption issues are so bad. These are not new issues for me, and I have struggled with them to some extent my entire life. I will struggle with them until I die.
Please hear me when I say that people like us are taught to minimize and sabotage our own capacity at every opportunity, rare tho they may legitimately be. It will NEVER benefit you to assert that you are unilaterally incapable of a term like "manual labor" which is a phrase so broad as to be meaningless in this context. I have harvested crops while wheelchair bound, I've known construction workers who couldn't walk without crutches and canes. I've known practically nothing but other disabled people my entire life, and I cannot convey to you how it makes me feel to read this ask. This is not a criticism of you anon. Certainly disability definitionally limits us in ways that disrupt our lives. But there is a pervasive and frightened helplessness in how this ask feels to read that sets my teeth on edge as someone who is painfully familiar with the way disabled people are subjugated, disempowered, and erased from community.
Anon I don't know how to answer your question. You haven't told me what you CAN do or even what you're INTERESTED in doing. I don't even fully understand whether you are asking me for advice on how to volunteer or on how to access food aid programs and the two answers are wildly different. You have spent so much time describing assumptions that would take paragraphs for me to explain how irrelevant and incorrect they are, and framed them AS your question, so I literally cannot answer this without saying things like "You Can Do Manual Labor If You Are Disabled" [true but out of context is absolutely laughably untrue and difficult to ensure context is not lost around] or "What Do You Mean You Assume Food Banks Being Most Affected By The Freezes Means You Shouldn't Use Or Work With Them???" [Condescending, likely to trigger defensiveness, but seriously I have NO IDEA where you got this idea or how to explain why it's wrong given the circumstances], or even "You Are Talking About Yourself In Ways That I And Many Other Disabled People Have Resisted As Oppressive Infantilization For Decades And Trying To Have This Conversation Makes Me Feel Like Armand In The Birdcage When His Son Asks Him to Go Back In The Closet For A Night So He Can Avoid Confronting His In-Laws' Bigotry" [true, my feelings on this are not your fault and you should not have to be accountable for them, but the grief and rage are hard to swallow, even when I can see how hard you are trying to have this conversation yourself. Like Armand, time will pass and I will settle into the reality that loving others means swallowing my own pain sometimes and being there for them in ways that are hard on me. This is one of those times. It is worthwhile to me to do. But I can still hear the last words Armand and Val say to each other when Armand finally gives in. "I love you Val, please don't talk to me for a while". I love you Val, but what you have asked of me is almost more pain than I can bear and just because I love you enough to do this for you doesn't mean I have forgiven you for asking.]. You may notice that none of these are helpful things to say, for you OR me Anon.
So. Let's get down to brass tacks. When I was growing up, we were poor enough that my mother often struggled to keep us fed and housed. Here are the ways she taught me to cope with this:
Grow your own. My mom grew tea flowers, edible cactus, and kitchen herbs in tiny standing pots in our driveway. When all you have is beans and rice, a nice kit of dried herbs can help you keep the recipes varied more easily. You can use window boxes, grow tents, or even indoor hydroponics stands to grow herbs, edible flowers, and even some fruits like tomatoes and strawberries. Many of these smaller scale growing set ups are perfectly manageable from a wheel chair as long as the stands, sills, or tablea your pots are set on are accessible to you from your chair. You do not need to be able to do the most intense version of a thing for it to be worth doing and not everyone will need/be able to build a greenhouse and drying racks like I am doing. There is still value in setting up any amount of home growth or forage you can. There were a lot of "fasting days" in our household where my mother made teas from the native honeysuckle and wildflowers and grasses because it was all she had to feed us. On days when we had nothing but our teas, she kept chewable tablets of vitamin c, fiber, and B-12 vitamins, multivits too if she could, and we popped them throughout the day to bridge the nutritional gap, and she always made sure we never did it more than 3 days in a row no matter what it took.
Barter and trade. Others will have larger gardens with bumper crops they can afford to share. You have SOMETHING to trade even if you don't think you do. And even if you don't, seed packs are cheap and can often be purchased using food stamps/ebt/snap/wic and I have supplied other farmers/gardeners with the resources to plant more in exchange for them including these crops in their existing plans and providing me with some pre-negotiated portion of it.
Food banks and food fridges are going to be under seige, yes, but please understand this Is Not New even if the scale and intensity has escalated. These programs will survive. They will continue to provide for their communities. Do not deny yourself their aid before even showing up to learn from them directly how they are tackling this period. My local food banks are still in full operation, and while they have had to reduce how many monthly pick ups a single family can make, they are still supplying about 10lbs of food per household per week, which can absolutely make or break community nourishment rates. Plus, the more service they can prove they are still offering, the easier it is for them to get funding elsewhere. No one in the mutual aid or not for profit world relies EXCLUSIVELY on government resources, even the foster care agency I worked for had two yearly funding drives and a yearly holiday gift drive to round out the financials. These programs know what efforts they'll need to ramp up to survive, but they only know HOW MUCH THEY NEED TO RAMP UP if people are actually showing up for services. Please god show up for the services.
Local, family owned, and co-op grocers and restaurants will sometimes be willing to give away the food they need to pull out of the supplies at the end of each day. When I was growing up my mom made friends with someone at every shop like this she could so they could help her ensure this happened. When I was working in grocery stocking, there was a cart we had to purge things into every single shift, and we all worked together to ensure the cart only ever had genuinely rotten or unsafe food in it. The staff all split the rest between us if it was still edible because none of us were paid enough to feed our families. When management put up cameras to find out where the purged stock was going, we made sure they were always blocked by shelving or damaged beyond functionality so that we could continue. If you know enough other people doing this at their stores, you can pool resources even further and start your own food distribution networks within the community food source employees.
Trapping and hunting isn't as difficult as you might think, and it is still legal in many places. If you're willing and able to set up a small wheel-up butchering station, you can ask people to bring you meat carcasses and butcher them in exchange for a cut of the meat or some stew bones. That way even if you aren't able to trap or hunt, you can still barter and trade a service for it.
Farmshare programs are common, and while most have a "pick your own at a discount" version of their service, most also have a crate drop off or pick up option as well, including those priced on a sliding scale for people who lack the finances to fully enroll. Check out (or have a caregiver/friend check out) local farmer's markets until they find where these programs are doing their pick up and sign up outreach.
I'm sure there are other ways to survive a USA socially-engineered famine. Other people who have their own inherited approaches for surviving subsistence lives here should prolly add theirs in the comments. My experience is limited to what I have lived through and find accessible so I may not have a full view of the options. As always though, my advice on how to get involved is to start using the service as much as you are able and little by little learn about what support and participation the program actually needs. Eventually something will turn up that works for you, at least for a while. Just keep doing that and doing the things that are feasible and moving on without guilt from the ones that aren't.
A freeze survival reaction is easy to have right now. Momentum will matter. Find yours, however it needs to look.

Hello and welcome, trainees and newcomers to the foundation!
It's time to put on your training wheels and get on the wagon, as we speed through Southeast Asia and the Middle East with our dear friends, the Joestars and co.
- The Speedwagon Foundation
Read the introduction comic here.
Keep reading for info and TOS down below (Do not interact with the blog if you have not read the TOS! It's at the very end.)
This is Project Ask the Crusaders of Stardust! An ask blog dedicated to the main cast of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. What can you and can you not expect from this blog? For one we will not have a set schedule for posting. "We" is right, we're two people running this blog. Namely @starplatimoon (Mod Moon) and @kuttblueberry (Mod Blueberry). We're very passionate about these guys and the story of part 3, and we have our own AU and RP we will pull inspiration from when it comes to moving the story forward on this ask blog. So expect the unexpected when it comes to what may happen... We will both be drawing and writing for this blog, but one of us may have more responsibility for writing certain characters than the other. Specifically, Mod Blueberry writes more for Joseph, Avdol, and Kakyoin while Mod Moon writes more for Jotaro and Polnareff. It's just the way we like to do it. This blog is fully a collaboration! We'll be putting credit where credit is due at the end of posts, we may forget sometimes or simply choose not to, however. There may be room for ships such as Avpol and Noritaro to develop down the line. And while that may be the case, we don't want this blog to revolve around ships, but the character's general dynamics and story! And to just goof off and have fun. That too. While the blog is "sponsored by the SPWF" and you're welcome to commit to the bit, you really don't have to pretend to be a newbie SPWF employee. Treat this like you would any other ask blog, there are no rules in that regard. But we will be touching on actual rules for a TOS at the end of this post that we implore you to check out before interacting with this blog or sending asks! And lastly, roleplay-themed asks and magic anons (AKA stand users) are allowed but we might not indulge in it regularly. But there may be events in the future that touch on more fun ways to interact with us, whether that be "a sudden influx of stand users!" or whatever. We do what we want.
!!!TOS BELOW PLEASE READ BEFORE SENDING ASKS/INTERACTING!!!
Don't spam the same question/message, we will get to you. And if we don't, it's probably because you broke one of the other rules OR it's already been answered in one form or another. (Although we may revisit similar themes, time will tell).
No s*xually explicit questions (Or the ghost of Erina Joestar will come back from the afterlife to whack you across the head with her ghostly cane).
No proshippers or proship themed asks. (For you who don't know what that means: Proshipping includes ships that have inc*stial/p*dophilic/abusive themes. This also includes aiming suggestive comments or asks towards Kakyoin and Jotaro, do not do that)
Related to the above, do not send in asks if you indulge in proshipping, in fact, do not interact with this blog.
We are not looking for more mods. Just the two of us, we can make it. If we try <3
Do not repost our art without credit (this does not include reblogs here on Tumblr). But if you want to use our art as say a profile picture or header, you can WITH credit. This also goes for if anyone wants to dub over our comics or such, that is allowed too, with credit.
Do not badger us if we decide to take breaks or go on a hiatus, we have our own lives. This goes for literally any ask blogs out there, do not stress the mods out!!!
If you break any of these rules, you may earn a block, be mindful of that.
On a happier note, aside from abiding by our rules, have fun! This blog was made for fun and we hope you will have fun, we sure will. (If we don't, read bullet point 7.... just kidding.... or am I.....)
Thank you for reading all the way to the end!

as an on-and-off elbow crutch user, lemme tell yall abt my experiences
it got kinda long so im putting it in the read-more
it slows you down
especially in stairs, you have to put both your feet in one step to go to the next. that means it takes me twice the time to go up or down stairs than an abled bodied person, and that is when they're not speeding
you really cant speed much, be it on flat road or on stairs. it doesnt speed u up much and the only thing that happens is you get tired from using so much effort
people having to wait for you makes you self-conscious, even if they are understanding about it
carrying anything is a nightmare. backpacks can throw your balance off. you cannot hang a bag on the handles of your crutches cause you have to LIFT those bitches. and if you're only using one crutch, carrying the bag in the empty hand also throws you off balance
you only have a maximum of one hand available at all times
you need people to get out of the way. you need more moving space and standing space for moving with crutches
the crutches make your hands sore. you're carrying your weight with them after all. you can need to take a moment to rest only to soothe your palms, even if your legs arent tired
sitting is always a hassle with leg injuries, and that becomes a bigger mess when you need to also find a non-obstructive place to put your crutches to. they need to be easily accessible to you
standing up is also very hard. it depends on what your disabilities are but the faster you find a way to comfortably stand up, the better
people *will* try and take your crutches. Do Not do that. i dont care if you're fascinated by them or if you wanna play around and swing urself or if u wanna hold onto them while i sit. unless i explicitly ask you to, do Not take my crutches. and if you do, don't set it down anywhere, hand it off to somebody else, or leave it somewhere i cant get to. wait for further instructions. do i want you to put them at somewhere specific? do i want you to give them back to me? do what i want you to with them, nothing more and nothing less
people get curious and it gets really tiring to answer the same questions. i dont owe you an explanation and i dont want your curiosity or your pity
yes it's real sad that your distant relative also had one accident so they had to use crutches too. yeah there are canes and underarm crutches and wheelchairs but this is what i am using. yes people may need them for different reasons and it's not your place to judge or question it. can i please keep walking?
crutches get dirty from being used everywhere and the handles sweaty from your palms and they need cleaning
you will get looks no matter what aid you are using
idk if it's just me but going downhill is very hard with crutches. uphill too but when it's downhill i'm also afraid of falling and rolling downhill 😭
getting in and out of cars is a hassle. btw, for safety, you should put your crutches on the ground under your feet
acquiring a shower stool might just be what you need. also get non-slip plastic rugs to lay on the bathtub/shower floor. getting someone to help you shower isnt shameful
if you drop something, woe is you. where do you put your crutches? how do you crouch to get them? the best thing to do, in that case, is to ask for help. people wont mind, believe me. and if you're alone, be careful and take your time
creaky crutches are the worst💔💔
being able to walk without crutches doesnt mean ur faking. not having more pain without crutches doesnt mean ur faking. stop being so hard on yourself
it's not our duty to educate people. if you're so curious go do a basic google search before questioning me. because, consider how many times i get the same questions in the same day
seeing another mobility aid user brings a sense of belonging and you bring the same feeling to people without visible disabilities
be unapologetically yourself. take up space. dont be sorry for needing aid
take care. i love you 🫶

edit: I DO NOT GET NOTIFS FOR ASKS OR MENTIONS!! if you send or answer an ask to/from this blog, please LIKE one of the posts so I get a notif and am prompted to check this blog because I have too many.
i dont wanna make an intro post again ack. hi welcome to my second unit shuffle blog my first was @jail-x-break-official and that blog has all the links to my other blogs which have all my information. here wee have sweet ♪ poppyseeds comprised of rui, mizuki, emu and saki. I'll differentiate their activity by emojis 🎈🎀🍬🎹 respectively and the entire group is represented by 💐.
the Lore. um. find out about it by prying them but ill give you necessary context under cut
so I will say that wxs did almost form in this au. think of it like if wxs never tried to reconcile after the fight between nene and tsukasa (and in turn tsukasa and rui). do with that information what you will.
edit: tsukasa has become relevant. he isn't a part of s♪p and as such won't be interacting with them and such, but I didn't want to make another blog for him or his unit because I didn't think I'd use it. His tag here is #🌟 tsukasa (other) 🌟 and signoff is - 🌟
secondly I will say that I havent the slightest clue what I want these guys to...do. part of the reason I made this blog was to try and iron it out. Fun fact you can send yourself a ask and it well apper in your ask bot ))
Also doomsday au
I really didn't mean to make fun of disable or metal I'll people or beings I was just trying to figure out how the park animatronics find the pizzaplex animatronics in the waterpark. I truly didn't mean to make fun of any disability or metal illnesses.
I feel awful for not releasing that and I really sorry
Please forgive TwT I apologize.
Hey buddy it's okay, I know it wasn't your intention at all! I have two asks of you saying similar to this and I just got back online so I really hope you've not been fretting about this all this time, I'm sorry I couldn't answer you sooner!
Tumblr media
And to answer this one, I'm not saying you have to scrap the whole idea or anything. Like I've said in a previous ask (I can't remember which one I'm sorry) you could always modify it or re-contextualise it to make the disabilities of Bonnie and the retriever dog not the butt of the joke.
I think I said before that you could focus more on the fact that no one's ever built a wheelchair before, and thus, have to figure out what the hell they're doing. You could make their mistakes more of a "well we're figuring this out!" kind of thing, and have the joke be that none of them even considered they might need to put breaks on the chair. And if Bonnie isn't the one testing it, he's not in any danger here, but even he were the one testing it, he could have been heavily involved in the making of the chair and also forgot the brakes. Because he's never used one before, and thus, has never needed brakes on his chairs before.
People in wheelchairs can do silly things too, they're not immune. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few new wheelchair users that tried to take on a hill that was way too steep for them. Everything's a learning curve, right?
I'm not an expert though so maybe take this with a grain of salt.
For the retrievers having faulty code and thereby having various difficulties like you suggested, I think that'd be an interesting thing to have around in the park. They could present as having learning disabilities and what not, having difficulties with new concepts, or certain subject areas that just don't make sense at all to them. Maybe they show signs of inattentive or hyperactive ADHD or show some strong Autism traits? Such as difficulties with short term memory, focusing on anything at all, trouble picking up on social cues and being overwhelmed and overworked much faster than others?
It would probably require some research, but honestly, there's probably more than enough people around here to help you with that, including me.
For the alternatives you said here, having Bonnie walking around still gives you some disability options!
For example, a lot of wheelchair users can still use their legs. They might only be able to walk so far, or might need significant support, but there's other mobility aids for that. He could use crutches for example, or a rollator to give him the extra support he needs to manage until they have a wheelchair sorted out, and even then, he'd still be able to alternate between any of them depending on how he feels at the time.
You also don't necessarily need a wheelchair in that kind of situation. You've already said you have horses and ponies, well, if he can stay on the back of one just fine, then he can always use them as a mobility aid for longer distances. If he needs extra support, they can always modify a saddle to for that, or perhaps, have a few ponies pull him in a little cart. He could then switch to crutches or a rollator or something for the shorter distances or for the areas the ponies can't go.
If his issue isn't to do with how well his legs can support him or carry him around like that, it could be more to do with his balance. In which case, a cane or rollator and stuff could still work pretty well for him. Maybe his problem is less with getting around, and more with dexterity? Perhaps he has joint problems in his hands and they don't move as he wants them too anymore? Maybe the connections between his hands, or his ears or whatever and his battery are damaged and so they're a lot weaker and slower to move? It would mean he wouldn't have a lot of grip strength, or might not be able to angle his rabbit ears towards noise as well so might have some trouble hearing, and what not.
Maybe he's got tremors and his hands and arms shake a lot? Maybe he's got animatronic arthritis from not having the proper lubricants for his joints and now he's all squeaky and creaky as he moves and has chronic joint pain that increases over time?
Maybe his fucking eye fell out and now he's only got half his vision and no depth perception and adjusting to this is an absolute pain because he keeps smacking into the walls, I dunno. What I'm saying is you have a hell of a lot of options here buddy! You have an absolute buffet of things to work with! Don't let one accident put you off! You know what to be careful of a little bit better now, so now you can catch it easier next time!
If you want a great place to pick this stuff up from, you should look at @cripplecharacters blog! (Sorry for the tag if you see this) I've learned a lot from them and they've answered a lot of my questions before too! They're VERY helpful! Might also give you ideas on what to do with Bonnie too!
If you want an alternative to blasting through the fence of the water park, you could always have Roxy or Cassie look over at it, discover it's been basically completed, and have them goof around trying to get in and explore. Like, Roxy could try climbing the fence, they could be digging a hole under it for hours before finding concrete and giving up, they could be stacking a bunch of boxes and shit very precariously to make steps up to the top, etc. etc.
I've seen motorbikes in racing clips that don't stop when the rider falls off and just go fucking haywire on their own too, so maybe Roxy is a bit rusty or she's trying to teach Cassie how to ride one and she falls off, leaving the motorbike to crash through the fence on its own? Maybe Monty or whoever in the water park heard all these wolves howling and he and Chica decided they were gonna blast the fence down and investigate themselves? Maybe DJ tries walking on side of the fence to get over it and it just straight up collapses on him?
DJ just stood there, unharmed but probably covered in splinters, in the ruined remains of this fence like "........ um....." cause that was absolutely not what was supposed to happen lmao
You could have like... three others all sitting on each other's shoulders with Roxy or Cassie at the top of this tower of clowns to try and get a look over the fence? Maybe Bonnie just tried driving a truck for the first time and doesn't have a clue what he's doing?
You have such a cool location with such a wide variety of things and characters, you could do pretty much anything ever with this buddy!

Writing Toph Beifong, Advice from a Blind Writer
I’m Mimzy, an actual visually impaired writer and blogger who talks a lot about writing blind characters accurately and sensitively. A while back someone sent me an anon asking how to write Toph more accurately and sensitively.
Anonymous asked: Hi there! Your blog has been super-helpful already - I thought I knew a bit about writing with blind characters, but it turns out there was a lot to learn - but this is more specific. I'm writing a The Last Airbender fanfiction, and one of the characters is Toph. I think the fandom has done a fairly good job of respecting her blindness, but what are some things you'd like to see when people write her? I want to represent the character as best as possible; thanks in advance!
It’s taken a while for me to answer because I have a lot of thoughts about it as both a blind writer and someone who has read a lot of atla fanfiction. So here we go:
Before we get started, I want to mention some things:
One: I have an entire series for writing blind characters that continues to grow with time and the most up-to-date version can be found pinned as the top post on my blog. There will be a time-stamp for when the post was last edited and a long series of links to all relevant posts on the subject.
Here’s a quick link to that post, but again, all you have to do is click my blog url and you’ll find it immediately.
Two: I’ve noticed something amazing about the atla fandom and I would like to thank you for it. I’ve noticed a lot of bloggers have taken to writing image descriptions for both the fanart and memes you post in the fandom, whether it’s OP including the description or another blogger adding it themselves. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a fandom so consistently doing this and that’s incredible. Realizing how many different blogs were picking up this habit has warmed my heart.
I’d like to see writers use her other senses. There’s soooo so much more to her O&M (Orientation and Mobility) than earth sense.
Beyond sight and earth bending, there’s hearing, touch, smell, taste, sense of direction, hot vs cold, sense of pain, sense of where your body parts are in relation to the rest of you, sense of internal well-being, etc. Before Toph had mastery of her earth bending, she had to have mastery of those too.
Toph also must have very strong opinions about certain smells, sounds, tastes, and textures. Toph is opinionated about everything, and when so much of your understanding of the world depends on senses that most people are ignoring in favor of some other sense you don’t have, it gets frustrating. I’m sure that tree looks pretty but the smell is terrible. Who cares if this fabric looks pretty, it’s scratchy, do. not. like. at. all.
But also in positive ways too. Oh, that flower arrangement looks bland and monochromatic? Who cares, it smells sweet and honey-like. Weird dark cavern with high ceiling and no light? The harmonics are awesome.
Every character probably has a certain sight or image they’re particularly fond of: Katara watching snow fall, or Aang enjoying how small the world looks from up on Appa, or Zuko enjoying the sunrise every morning during meditation. In that line, Toph must have some things personal to her that she enjoys.
I imagine she likes the taste of foods familiar to her childhood, the smell of whatever flowers grew around her home, and the texture of certain kinds of dirt Example: loose dirt probably isn’t the best for seeing, but I think she would enjoy how it feels to run her fingers through it or maybe enjoy the way it softens her perception of the world the same way sighted people like to see colorful, bright lights reflecting off puddles in the middle of rain.
If you struggle with this, that’s okay. I recommend taking some time to think about it for yourself, to find what tastes and smells and textures and sounds you enjoy the most, what makes you feel safe and at home, what brings you comfort, and relate that back to Toph.
In a Modern AU, I want to see Toph have a cane. Even in a Modern AU with bending included in the world building, I think Toph would benefit from having a cane.
The cane has a lot more function than bumping into things. A big part is that it signals to others that you are very obviously blind. Which is a big deal because sighted people are really, really bad at spotting the blind person.
(psst, please stop saying ‘the blank look in her eyes’ because I swear to god it’s been killing me inside for years.)
Also, even in an AU with bending, I think Toph would like the advantage of tapping her cane to create a stronger, more distinct vibration than a small shifting of her weight on her feet. It would have more control.
You could give Toph a guide animal, buuuuuuut, um, Toph is not a guide dog person. Like, there are some people who definitely prefer a guide dog, and some people who definitely prefer a cane, and some who definitely prefer no mobility device at all. Toph does not have the vibes of someone who wants to be both responsible and reliant on an animal when she’s so insistent that she can take care of herself on her own. Toph likes animals, but not that much.
Although, yeah, only 10% of the blind community use mobility devices, so cane and guide dog users are the minority of the blind community, but I stand by the vibe that Toph would love the independence of a cane. Also, it’s almost never ever done. Modern AUs never seem to touch much on Toph’s O&M skills with canes or guide dogs.
I wrote a whole post on everything you need to know about canes, what orientation and mobility is, how you learn O&M, what kind of canes exist, how to use them, how to describe the sensory input a cane gives you, and everything I know about guide dogs from past research.
Honestly, you could give Toph (or any blind character) a cane in any AU, because I fully stand by the theory that canes are a piece of technology that has been invented, lost, and reinvented again and again.
I wrote “I found a piece of lost blindness history” a few months ago after a visit to see my grandparents. My grandmother told me how her blind aunt found a way to write letters by hand to send to my grandmother when she was a child. I speculated on how the long cane has probably been invented and then lost and then reinvented over and over again in history, as well as giving a little history on the growing popularity of guide dogs in the 20th century following World War 1.
About the “blank look in her eyes,” I have a theory to the exact cause and nature of Toph’s blindness.
I know it’s common to think that the milky green color of her eyes is why she’s blind, though I’m not sure how many realize that milky green color is caused by severe cataracts. At least, cataracts is what I assume to be the reason for the color of her eyes. However, people with cataracts still have some remaining sense of light and shadow perception.
Only 9% of the blind community is completely blind, seeing absolutely nothing. The rest have some remaining vision, even if that’s only light and shadow perception or the perception of vague movement.
The percentage of people born completely blind is even smaller.
Toph says that she’s never been able to see, which would lead me to guess that the initial cause of her blindness was a defect with the visual processing part of her brain. I also theorize that the cataracts developed slowly over her very formative years and that she likely wasn’t born with them. For that reason, I think it would have taken a few weeks or months for her parents to realize there was something wrong with her eyes.
Here is a post about the developmental years of blind children and how their life would differ from both sighted children and from someone who went blind as an adult.
What is it like to see nothing?
It’s a concept that sighted people struggle with and I completely understand. I myself didn’t understand the concept of “nothing” until someone explained it as this:
“Imagine trying to see out the back of your head.”
Which, genuinely, imagine that. Try that. Because here’s what I found. There’s no part of my body that can help perceive that. I don’t have eyes there, nor do I have a part of my brain that can process that. Because of this, there is no sense of light or dark, no shape or shadow or movement or depth that I can perceive. There is nothing.
And honestly, it gives me a headache trying to think too much about it.
Toph doesn’t see black, doesn’t have a mental image of it. When people talk about light and dark, Toph has nothing to base the concept on. The closest relation she has to that is silence versus sound, or her earth sense when she’s in the air on Appa versus when she’s on solid ground. But it’s not the same.
I would like to examine the way the show tried to describe Toph’s earth sense, that black void with ripples of white stretching from her feet and outwards. Television is a visual medium so of course their explanation of Toph’s earth sense would be visual, but that’s not what it’s actually like in her head. More accurately, it’s like touching the back of your head to something and feeling what’s solid behind it and what has more give. A wall versus a pillow for example. Slamming your hand on a flimsy table and feeling it rattle under your palm. And for someone so adept at using that sense, she feels not just the table surface under her palm, but the individual rattles down the four legs, how uneven those rattles are because the legs are carved decoratively instead of solid planks, and how the foot of each leg bumps against the ground, and how the floor vibrates in response to the impact, which she feels in both her feet and hand.
About Toph’s Relationship with Her Parents
It’s not something I see touched on much. There’s been a lot of focus on Zuko and Azula’s relationship with their parents and the abuse, as well as exploration of Sokka and Katara’s trauma with losing their mother, and Sokka looking up to his warrior father while Katara struggles with her abandonment issues.
Please don’t take this as a critique, because there are a few valid reasons for this and I would like to give you some insight on how to explore Toph’s relationship with her parents.
For starters, the show had a lot more reason to focus on Zuko and Azula’s parents, with Fire Lord Ozai being the primary villain and Zuko’s greatest abuser, and Azula’s dependent worship of her father in response to Ursa’s neglect and favoritism of Zuko, which was likely Ursa’s response to Ozai’s favoritism of Azula. Their parents are huge driving motivators for why Zuko and Azula make the decisions and mistakes they do, why they are at one point in the show the villains themselves. (And why I think Azula should get a redemption arc and some healing.)
Katara’s trauma of losing her mother and blaming herself is a huge factor in both her response to the war, her relationship with her bending, and her motherly nature with her friends. The show has to explore that. Just as it has to explore Sokka’s problems with toxic masculinity in response to being the man of his village, and his desire to be a great warrior and leader like the father he idolizes.
The show needs to explore that to make the plot move forward, and it benefits from these being two sibling sets with different responses to their upbringing and different sibling dynamics, setting them up as foils for each other.
The show also wouldn’t benefit by giving Lao and Poppy Beifong more screen time. Their established character were two nobles who kept as far out of the war as possible and prospered monetarily for it. Poppy was polite and demure and Lao liked to lead the conversation. Unless the gAang decided to return to Toph’s home, those characters had no reason to pop up anywhere in the show. And if they did, they would be a hinder to Toph and her part in the plot as both Aang’s earth bending teacher and as the greatest earth bender in the world, tossing Fire Nation soldiers eight ways to Sunday.
So truly, I understand that there’s not a whole lot of canon material (comparatively) to go off of when developing this, but I will offer some insight on what is there in canon.
Toph’s relationship with her parents is explored in that it maps out why Toph doesn’t want to be mothered by Katara, why she wants to prove how independent she is, but there’s very little on screen interaction between Toph and her parents.
Toph deeply loves her parents. I think that plays into why she doesn’t want Katara mothering her, because she has a wonderful mother at home who she loves and wants to better understand her, but she had no friends growing up and no older sister, which are the roles she needs and wants Katara to fill. If Toph wanted a mother figure, she would have latched onto Katara. Look at how Zuko never sought out another mother figure but did find a father figure in Iroh as he began to heal from his childhood trauma and separate his self image from his father’s acceptance.
Toph is in a complicated situation, she loves her parents but the way they’re raising her is hurting her in the long run. But Toph can see that their actions are because of their immense love for her. She can see how they would do anything for her. While she never had any examples of how other noble children were treated by their parents, who might have been distant or disinterested or always away for their social and work lives, she was remarkably loved by her parents. Her father put careful thought into her tutors and checked in on her progress. Her mother feared for Toph’s emotional state when she was kidnapped (even if she was incorrect about how Toph would respond), showing genuine empathy for her daughter.
I think their over protective nature became the love language Toph best understood them by, and part of her reasoning for not revealing how capable she was, was because she wanted to keep experiencing that love and care for as long as she could. But it’s not a love language she would put up with from anyone else.
I would like to point out Toph’s genuine excitement to see her mom again in the season finale of Book Two, how badly Toph wants her mom to understand and accept her for who she is.
My thoughts on what Toph can’t do: read, swim, see in the sand, fight things mid-air.
For how incredibly powerful the show makes Toph with her earth bending and the O&M she taught herself through it, they do touch on some of her weaknesses when they come up and find a useful way to showcase them.
The Serpent’s Pass was an excellent example of Toph’s vulnerability in water. From her fear of not being able to see on Katara’s ice bridge to not being able to swim and needing Suki to save her, Toph’s weaknesses putting her in danger added to the excitement and “sitting on the edge of your seat” feeling while watching the episode without turning her into someone who was helpless. She was just in a position where her normal defenses were useless.
Just like the earth benders in the metal prison in the ocean, or Katara having little water in the middle of a desert where her friends needed that water to survive more than she needed it to fight, making her vulnerable later in the show when the insect-wasp things attacked. Just like fire benders being weaker at night, or powerless during a solar eclipse, or a sighted person being lost in the dark. Those were just situations in which the tools you were accustomed to relying on could no longer help you or were taken away.
The show was clever in that it didn’t make her inability to read a direct threat to her safety, but rather as a clever plot device for her to be alone when the sand banders attacked and have to choose between fighting them to save Appa, or holding back an entire fricking building by the tiniest spire on its very top from falling into a void leading to the spirit world. It also showed her weakness to not being able to see or fight as well in sand. Which the show later made an effort to show how she’d improved on that problem in Book Three when she was surrounded by nothing but sand at Ember Island.
Like improving her ability to see in the sand, I would like to see a character teach Toph to swim, or at least float, so that she never feels helpless again. If she took the initiative to improve her sand bending so much, I’m sure she would have learn to swim eventually.
And on the note of reading, I’ve seen some speculation on how Toph could learn to read, whether it’s through using ink that has some percentage of earth mixed in, or developing the sensitivity to feel out the different weight, consistency, and texture of ink on paper.
I would like to bring your attention to Louis Braille, the blind Frenchman who invented Braille while studying at  the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles, the world’s very first school for the blind in Paris France (established 1785). Previously Louis was learning to read through a method in which each letter was pressed into the paper to leave an imprint that someone could feel out with just their fingers.
Louis Braille concluded that raised lettering was impractical because-
1.       It is difficult to read, the letters had to be printed in huge font to be fully felt out and printed on thick paper.
2.       Thick paper means higher quality, more expensive. Larger font means more paper is needed for a single text.
3.       This made it inaccessible due to expense and the sheer volume of a text.
4.       If today’s Braille books are hard to access and giant compared to traditional books, I can’t imagine how inaccessible those raised letter books really were.
The subject of Braille, the start and controversial near downfall to  Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles were discussed in a post about writing a blind character during the Victorian Era.
I’ve heard others complain in the past about fantasy universes in which a sighted person invents a solution to allow the blind to read, when the most effective and longest lived method was invented by a blindman over two hundred years ago and is the standard taught in schools today.
And while I couldn’t easily explain it or how it works because I can neither read Braille nor speak Chinese, I can tell you that Chinese Braille exists and works only slightly differently from the Braille western languages use. So, again, modern AUs especially would benefit from enabling Toph to read Braille and use a computer and phone with screen reader.
But just as easily you could choose not to have her learn to read but rather have sighted people read things aloud to her. Whether it’s in a professional setting as an adult having an assistant who reads and writes for her, or as a cute, fluffy little moment between Toph and another character. Both are just as genuine to the blindness experience.
Blind Jokes
If you ever get around to reading my post about blind jokes, I’d like you to remember that it’s primarily written for people writing original characters and that Toph canonically makes blind jokes, so to take away from that would not be true to her character.
Does Toph’s Earth Sense Negate her Blindness?
It’s a question I’ve seen raised before and discussed by both abled, disabled, and blind people. There are multiple perspectives on it, but my own take on it is that Toph’s earth bending does not negate her blindness, but rather functions very much like the process of learning to use a cane.
She had a tool, a teacher, and she learned to use that tool. Instead of a cane, it was seismic perception and her teacher were blind badger-moles. She spent years learning to earth bend as they do and then continued to take it to new heights as she explored fighting with it on her terms against sighted fighters.
Come to think about it, I would love to see Toph teach another visually impaired or blind earth bender who to see and bend as she does.
Is Toph Good Blindness Representation?
This question was posed to me in the comments of my master post, and my answer was something like this: “Toph is good representation, but she can't be the only type of representation we get. She's the best we had 15 years ago, but there are a million ways to nuance the blindness experiences. Toph's experience being born blind, having very over protective parents, being a small girl in a patriarical and wealth influenced society, having no friends growing up. Those are all great aspects of blindness to show, but there is so much more to explore. As for her blindness and whether or not that's negated, that's also nuanced. She has limits, she's not all-powerful, but she is the best earth bender hands down. More or less, I love Toph, she's a great character, give me like a million more blind characters who are completely different from her.”
I want to see accurate and well-written blind characters become much more common in modern media, and that’s why I started this blog. So if you decide you want to write your own blind character from scratch, feel free to come back and look at some of my other stuff.
End Notes:
I want to thank the anon who sent the original question because it never occurred to me how much the atla fandom would benefit from a post like this.

Tumblr media
You had stood infront of your bathroom mirror finishing up your makeup for the night. Your hair was already done and you had a nice outfit on, not to fancy and not too comfortable. While listening to a playlist George had made for you, you had put down the brushes you were using. It didnt really matter if you cleaned up your makeup that was littered all over the sink right now, but right now you were feeling good.
Today was your and George's 3rd year anniversary and you couldn't be happier about it. Today you two were going to dinner and doing something else which was supposed to be a surprise for you. It was a night on the town.
George and you met 4 years ago actually. You two started out as acquaintances, the slowly grew into friends and then one day he asked you to join him to dinner. At first you were oblivious to his actions, thinking he was just being a good friend, but turns out the more dates you two went on the more you caught on. He officially asked you to be his girlfriend 3 years ago today.
His friends keep on pressuring George to propose already, they think it's been long enough. The only thing close to marriage is a promise ring. He put the ring on your finger as a promise that one day he would marry you, everytime you doubt that he will propose you turn your attention to the cute ring on your finger.
You had turned off the bedroom lights and sat on your bed finally relaxing after struggling to find a decent enough outfit for tonight. George said that he was going to pick you up around 6:00 and now it is 5:47 so you had some time to spare.
You had found yourself scrolling through tiktok because you had nothing else better to do at this moment. It was a guilty pleasure of yours even though you and george both joked around about hating tiktok.
Time began to tick away so you had checked the clock on your phone which said 5:57 pm. You had grabbed shoes that you set up against your bed, slipped them on and grabbed all of your belongings for the night. You stationed yourself in the living room waiting till George came to the door.
Nervousness always came up before a date, it was the anticipation actually. You were excited and nervous about the date as you always were, but today for you was special. It was three years worth of beautiful love. You remembered the time he first said I love you too, it was just like it was yesterday.
***
"Hey y/n." George looked towards you. You both were sitting on a plaid, plush blanket with a brown woven basket ontop in between you two. It was just like the movies and that why you cringed because of how cheesy it was when George led you to it.
It was sweet, it was extremely sweet and you loved these dates that George always brung you too. You always felt special when you are sitting next to him.
You responded to George. "Yeah Gogy?" You laughed at the use of his nickname.
"Im trying to be serious right now and you call me Gogy." George smiled and shook his head. "Anyways, you know I love you, right?"
"Of course I do-"
"No I love you. I mean. I'm in love with you." George reached to rest his hand ontop of yours and repeated himself. "I'm in live with you y/n."
You wasted no time answering. "Im in love with you too."
***
6:03
George didnt show up yet, but there was no sweat. He was only 3 minutes late, maybe he ran into traffick. Your stomach was rumbling, but you didnt want to eat yet since you two we're planning to go to dinner. Patience is key, and it wasnt like he wasn't late before.
6:10
You started to get worried, it's been 10 minutes and still no sign of your boyfriend. You had gotton up several times to check outside of your door only to be met with no one. Your mind was jumping to conclusions about if he forgot your anniversary, but you shut those thoughts out for the time being.
6:19
Okay this is getting out of hand. You brung out our phone and began to text George, you couldn't believe that you had waited this long before texting the man.
Where are you? Ive been waiting for 29 minutes?!
[Sent: 6:20pm]
George what are you doing?
[Sent: 6:20pm]
You awaited his text message with your phone faced up on the coffee table infront of you. You didn't want to believe that George woukd forget, or overslept, but that was becoming truth the more minutes passed by with no call or text.
6:30
Calling him was useless, because he didn't answer. He didn't hang up on you he just wasn't picking up the phone, like he turned it off. You started to get worried if something happened to him, if he was in a situation where he couldn't call or text you. You wondered if he was safe at home and not out in the middle of the street.
In a flash all your worries subsided when your phone lit up with a notification.
ThisIsNotGeorgeNotFound is live:
Im Playing golf with my friends
That son of a bitch. Pissed off was an understatement, you were fuming. How could he end up streaming at home when you had constantly reminded him about this day, he knew damn well about this day too. How could he?
You ended up grabbing a jacket and your purse and ended up driving to George's place. It seemed like he was mocking you in a way, he knew you had notifications on for Twitch. You loved to support him and his career, but this was making a fool out of yourself.
Your hand tightly gripped the steering wheel as you tried not to run every red light you cane across. You finally came across George's home, you found a place to park and quickly got out of your car and sped walked your way to George's residence. Finally making up to George's door you knocked harshly on the door probably making more noise than what you intended too. You continuously banged on his door until you got fed up.
Remembering that George had given you a key to his house you dig through your purse to get your set of keys out anr unlock his door. You stomped inside his house and closed the door behind you.
"GEORGE! GEORGE!" You yelled through the house. You were being reckless and annoying, but you didnt care at this point you were fuming and needed to tell George how you feel.
You had made your way to George's recording room where he was talking to his friends on discord. George looked towards you in shock clearly not hearing the sounds you were making throughout his house.
"Y/N?!" George yelled and muted his microphone.
"What the hell are you doing?" You exclaimed back.
"Im streaming thats what Im doing!" George sassed back at you, not paying attention to his screen and the chat.
"Dont get smart with me. End the stream."
"What?! No!"
"You heard me, we need to talk." You crossed your arms across your chest. Your heart was beating too fast for your liking and you tried to calm yourself down, but George's comments were getting to you.
George was about to unmute himself and get back to the game. "No we dont-"
"GEORGE END THE FUCKING STREAM! This is embarrassing! Talk to me cause you have some explaining to do." You snapped at him.
A silence tell upon you two and he glared at you before turning to his stream and closing it out.
"Okay guys! Go watch the other boys streams I need to go now! Bye!" George quickly ended and turned off everything.
He turned around to you still sitting in his chair. "What? What do you want?"
"Do you know what today is?" You asked.
"April 30th." George answered bluntly.
"Thats all you have to say?" You asked in shock. "It's our anniversary dickhead!"
"I fucking know that." George said.
"You do? So why did you start streaming and we had dinner plans?!"
"I told you we were streaming! You weren't listening to me!" George stood up from his chair when he said that.
"When the fuck did you tell me this?!"
"A couple days ago! You didn't listen!"
"But you knew that was our anniversary! And we made dinnerr plans-"
George yelled over you. "A month ago! We made those plans a month ago so excuse me for forgetting!"
"So all these other years you remembered our anniversary and went out of your fucking way to cancel other plans around that date, but today you didnt because why?!" Tears were threatening to fall down you cheeks, but you wouldnt let him see you like that.
"Because I planned this already with the boys! And AGAIN you werent listening to me when I said that-"
"There were several other times that you could've told me too! But you didn't!" You sniffed trying to keep the frustrated tears inside.
"I already planned this and I cant go back on my promise-"
"But you can with me?!" You yelled and George stopped talking. He's just studying your face at this point and you hated this silence.
"Its not important apparently." You said while walking out of the recording room.
"You're being a bitch." He mumbled.
"Excuse me?! That is so disrespectful!" You spun around yelled at him.
"You already made me feel like shit so might as well finish me off." George said in a annoying tone.
"Yeah you should feel like shit! I feel like shit too so-!" You threw your hands up in exasperation and stormed out the room. You had made it to the door before George called out to you again.
"Y/n! Y/n! Please!"
"No! Just..." You paused before opening the door and ushering your way out. "Call me when you get your shit together.
Tumblr media
You were currently curled up on your couch eating leftovers that you had in the refrigerator. That had satisfied your hunger for the night because the dinner was canceled that night. Your anger and sadness had subsided and you were only left with an unusual feeling in your heart. Your relationship felt incomplete, this fight felt incomplete. You didnt break up with him, but you were waiting for closure.
The TV was the only light in the room. It illuminated what it wanted to, you didnt care if it was too dark. Usually you would be cuddled up with George at this ungoldy hour, but you weren't and that made you tear up.
Your sadness was still there, your anger towards George turned into pity. You were sad about the actions he took, but somewhere in your heart you could forgive him. You could forgive and move on if he would come to you.
Speaking of, you had a knock on your door. You didn't have the strength to get up, but you did. Shuffling your way to the door you sluggishly opened it to find George standing there with his hands in his hoodie. The person you wanted to see, but at the same time you wanted to slam that door in his face.
"Hey." George spoke and you gave him a small smile, nothing more.
You turned around to find your seat back on the couch where you were comfortable, but also giving him a silent invitation to come inside. You had sat down on the couch not paying attention to George, but you knew he closed the door, took off his shoes by yours, and put his keys on the table by the door like he always did. It was like a routine to him.
George ended up awkwardly standing beside the couch as you ignored him.
"You know, if you didnt open the door I would've used my keys like you did." George tried to spark up a conversation, but you only hummed in response. You were scared that if you spoke, you would cry.
George ended up making his way to the couch sitting beside you and pulling you into his embrace. Your head was on his chest and you began to sob. You missed this it's only been a few hours, but you had felt that in those few hours you had lost everything. You continued to sob into his hoodie as he rubbed your back and shushed you, whispering sweet nothings into the air only for you to hear.
"Im here, and Im sorry. Im so fucking sorry that I did this to you and I only hope that you can forgive me." George said, his voice cracking a little when he said that. You kept crying.
That's what you wanted to hear all along, that's what you needed. You could forgive him in due time, you always will because you love him, you will always love him. You both can always make it right.

Block the “wheelchair in the wild” “curio rambles” and "curio reviews" tags if you’ve just come for the reblogs/resources, and don’t want to see my day to day ramblings.
I try and write descriptions and transcriptions for the media I reblog but sometimes it can take me a little while.
My asks are very much open and I am happy to answer almost anything, even if it’s not disability related. Although if you ask me a question, I might take a couple of days to respond if I have to research it so please be patient.

It's Disability Awareness Month or for some of us it is every day as usual. So here's some friendly tips that abled people need to learn but you probably never even thought about.
- The blue or yellow lines next to accessible parking spaces (i.e. "handicap" spots) are necessary for mobility aid users (crutches, canes, wheelchairs, etc.) to get out of their cars. Some have wheelchair vans where the ramp needs to go down and that uses up the whole space. Others need to makes use they can open their door all the way and have plenty of space to move their aids in the necessary directions or hold onto an open car door. Anyone who parks in those lines, leaves carts in those lines, or leaves electric mobility carts in those lines are being ableist. Yes, even if they are disabled too. Please leave those lines free so disabled people can exist in the world.
-Are you on a walk? Is there a wheelchair user coming your way and they don't seem to be moving out of the way and/or not staying on the right side of the pavement? If you can, please allow the wheelchair user to continue as they are. More than likely, a wheelchair user will be using the safest part of the pavement for them. Things like pot holes, dips, and even rocks, stones, or gravel can all cause a wheelchair user to "trip" which leads to either faceplanting out of the wheelchair or falling backwards out of a wheelchair. You may not see it, but I promise you the wheelchair user does.
-If you see someone fall out of their wheelchair do not immediately help them by pulling them up. Yes, I know you want to help and that is really decent of you. You just need to remember to ask first since many wheelchair users have chronic pain, and others have brittle bones or loose joints. Pulling someone up may increase the harm done to their body. If you are given the OK from the disabled person to help them, then make sure you listen and do exactly what they ask for. If they say no and don't want your help, please please listen to them and don't make a big deal out of it or force the issue.
-I know you want to hold doors open and yes, that is usually a totally okay thing to do! However, it is important that you hold open the door from the outside. When you hold the door open from the inside you end up blocking the doorway. Many disabled people especially those with mobility aids will take up more room than an able bodied person. It is also VERY important that of someone already has their hand on a door and is opening it that you DO NOT take the door from them. You can very easily harm someone by ripping the door out of their hands. Also, if a disabled person says they got the door and you grab it for them anyway, don't expect a thank you. Plenty of disabled people are exhausted at abled people thinking they can't do something, so when you do it anyway and make a big deal out of needing thanks, some of us are bound to get a wee bit cranky.
Don't treat your help as "your good deed for the day" and especially DONT say it. I know it's well meaning and helping people is literally confirmed to make yourself feel better. It ends up coming across as condescending and rude. Disabled people dont exist to make abled people feel better about themselves
-So you think a disabled person is an inspiration? I know you mean well and its meant as a compliment. What a lot of people dont realize is that calling someone an inpsiration for going about their day is actually really offensive. Think about how if you did something like go to the bathroom and you came out of the stall and someone said "you're so inspiring!" and all you did was take a shit? You'd be pretty disturbed.
-Speaking of bathrooms, please remember that disabled people *need* the accessible stall. The general rule is that if it's one of two stalls, and that's your only option, then sure go ahead. However if there are multiple open stalls and one accessible stall? Please leave the accessible one free (do not accost people who you think might not be disabled for using it, invisible disabilities are a thing). Don't use the accessible stall for changing, for your shopping cart, or for anything you're physically capable of leaving outside a regular stall. And if you need to use the stall especially if its like 1 of 2, then try to use it as quickly as possible.
- Being at the height of wheelchair users. Many diagrams that were made by abled folk say you should kneel down to a wheelchair user to talk to them. MANY wheelchair users find this supremely uncomfortable and condescending. A much better idea would be to bring up a chair or go somewhere where you can sit down with them if its a long conversation. If its a short conversation or there's nowhere for you to sit, ASK if they would like you to kneel down or if you should stay standing. Also, feel free to remind wheelchair users if you need to sit. Some of us (myself especially lol) forget that people with good working legs still get tired from standing too long.
-Always ask before helping a disabled person even if they are visibly struggling. Sometimes disabled people are still learning what they can and can't do and need to try on their own first. Some may look like they're struggling but it may just be the way their body works best. It is definitely okay to ask most of the time. All you have to do is listen to the answer.
-Dont approach disabled folk at night to offer help. Dont approach a disabled person who is already being helped by the person with them. Dont ask a disabled person who drove themselves somewhere if they need help in or out of the car. This is because if they got in the car, they knew they could get themselves out of the car. And if they have a wheelchair, there are very specific ways for the wheelchair to break down and go into the car that a non wheelchair user will have NO idea how to do so.
Please don't be upset and/or cause a scene if a disabled person denied your help but allowed it from someone else. There are multiple reasons you could have been denied your chance to help. It could be that the disabled person is with their friends or family and would prefer their help. The other person could be their aide (many aides dont need to have a uniform or scrubs and are often times hired friends or family). The disabled person may not have needed help with one thing but needed help for something else. And lastly, its really up to the disabled person who they accept help from.
-If a disabled person calls you (an able bodied person) out for using an accessible parking spot, PLEASE don't fight with them. Apologize, leave the spot, and don't do it again (and don't pull back in when their back is turned!). It doesn't need to be a huge fight.
-Dont touch or move a disabled person without their permission. Touch includes things like head pats, shoulder pats, hugs, arm rubbing, etc.
Overall, respect disabled people. Ask before helping and listen to the answer even if the answer is no.

Thunderstorms (Josuke Higashikata x Reader)
A Josuke Higashikata x Reader one shot where you were once part of the Crusaders, coming to Morioh with Mr. Joestar, and your pomp baby likes you.
Word Count: 5.2k
Tumblr media
A chilly breeze under the warm sun. You were standing on the port of a moving boat, facing the wind that blew your [H/C] hair as you leaned on the sill with a calm expression, eyes closed and lips quirked into a wide smile. You loved moments where you just partook the natural quiet sounds around you, the splashes of water and whispering currents being music to your ears. The day has been serene so far, but you didn't really come here for vacation.
"Shizuka! Come quick! Come quick!"
The voice of a man called for you, disturbing your moment with the calming ocean. You stood from leaning and yawned, popping some stiff muscles before you ran off in panic upon realizing that you were supposed to take care of the person that called for you. Yeap, you forgot of your job for over a second.
You entered the lounging room of the boat and darted your eyes on the back of a crouching man who seemed to be inspecting something on the ground beside the couch. You couldn't see what it was but you were relieved, placing your hands on top of your heart as you sighed.
The man shifted his head and glanced at you with wrinkled eyes and parted lips, "I tried slipping on it, Shizuka, but I couldn't!"
You peeked over him after you reached his side and saw something yellow, "Is that what I think it is?" You replied, giggling as you realized his comedic attempt on trying to solve cartoon logic.
"This banana peel couldn't make me slip.." The old man repeated as he tried to stand up. You held his arm and helped him settle on the couch. He grabbed his wooden cane and placed it in between his legs before setting his eyes on the oceanic scenario outside the windows, "[Y/N]..! I'm sorry.. the name Shizuka has been on my mind lately.. It's-it's a pretty name, don't you think?"
You smiled at his words, grabbing the banana peel from the ground before sitting beside him, "I think it is, Mr. Joestar!"
Familial and friend, you were someone that Mr. Joestar would describe with those two words. Being a member of the Crusaders, and being the youngest one at that, had a big contribution on your platonic relationship with the old man. He was always looking out for you while your brave self assured him that you're afraid of one thing, but you're not afraid to kick the lingering enemy Stand users' peaches. He believed you like how a father would believe her daughter's imaginary stories, making sure you won't feel like you were invalidated. Although, his worry that the trip would scar you, both physically and mentally, increased to the max when the group arrived at Egypt, which led to you being transported back to your lonely home by the Speedwagon Foundation.
You couldn't understand the reason of his worry along with the other Crusaders, so you had a childish decision to to cut ties with them, only to reach out a few years later. At that time, you talked to Mr. Joestar himself, not even hiding the fact that you broke down on the phone when he hesitantly told you that only three of your group survived. You were joyed that he still considered you as a part of the Crusaders, but you were disappointed that you were immature, making you miss all the trivial things that happened. The old man comforted you like those nights when you were missing your parents, fondly telling you, "That's a no-go! The boys wouldn't want you shaming yourself now, and neither would I. Live your life like you're supposed to, little [Y/N]. Everyone would be so proud of the woman you'd become!"
Now that you're on the legal age of 18, you're trying to fulfill your number one goal in mind, and that is to be a doctor under the Speedwagon Foundation. Sure, you're a bit forgetful sometimes, but you have a free pass for being under special training which was only possible because of your Stand.
..and your connection with the Joestars.
You and Mr. Joestar were sitting in silence, lost in reminiscing thoughts, until the sound of a water vehicle grew to be disturbing the peace even if it sounded far.
"What..?" You glared at the surroundings, frantically looking from the door where you came from to the side of the windows, figuring out where the vehicle is most likely to be, "Mr. Joestar, I have to check something outside. It'll be quick, a'right?" You stood up, rushing outside after you received no reply from the unbothered old man who still had his attention on the scenery.
You ran through and up the hallway until you reached the edge of the deck. You held on to the red fence as you leaned with squinting eyes, trying to see who was on the.. motorboat approaching the boat you're on. The attempt took minutes, making you sit on the floor in boredom before you jumped to your feet in excitement as you finally saw the passengers of the smaller vehicle. One was a boy in a blue uniform you absolutely do not know and the other..
The other was your childhood emo crush who now wore a white hat and coat, "JOTARO! Jotaroooo!" You screamed, waving both your hands with a cheeky grin. This is your first time meeting him after a decade! You forgot, but you were just as excited when you were informed about meeting Jotaro Kujo during this boat trip with Mr. Joestar.
"I heard you're a Marine Biologist now, huh! Remember when you knocked that one shark out to save me?!" You ironically screamed before laughing, following the motorboat to the back as the boy in uniform whispered to Jotaro while pointing at you. The adult man didn't mind the two children around him and focused on driving the motorboat, tugging the brim of his hat down as he gave himself a small smile.
Two of the Speedwagon Foundation crew was already waiting for the motorboat when you reached the back, "Sirs! You knew they were coming?" You asked as you reached their side, eyes still on the said vehicle.
"[L/N]? We actually informed you about this.." One of the two answered, making you rub your neck as you looked up, trying to remember it happening. You tried.. and got extremely confused in just a minute that you didn't even notice that the passengers of the motorboat had boarded yours. You were snapped with your sudden realization that you've told Mr. Joestar you'll only be quick with checking, making you run back to the room he's in.
Okuyasu Nijimura, who actually thought you ran off because he stood in front of you, looked back at Jotaro with a puzzled face. The adult man shove his hands inside his pockets and gave permission to follow you with a jerk of his head, to which the student complied to, but not without a scrunched face and a dramatic hop on the small wall that separated the stern of the boat from the hull where the lounge was.
Mentoring three different teenage boys has been a pain in the back. Jotaro doesn't know if he should be happy that you're back with them or.. he should just devise an escape plan from all of this. Either way, with you here, he's certain that he doesn't have to look out for his Jiji that much.
The boat arrived at the harbor safely. Knowing that an enemy posed as a crew and wanted to get rid of Mr. Joestar was a bit surprising, you even thought Okuyasu was Mr. Joestar's son at first! But now that you're seeing his actual son who had an eye-catching pompadoured hair, you weren't surprised on how charming he was.
You whistled and nudged Jotaro who was on your side. Everyone had their eyes on the father and son walking away hand in hand, "Woah, that's Josuke Higashikata? Sheesh, Jotaro. What's with y'all Joestars being so hot and everything?"
Jotaro glared at you, "Gimme a break. You're older than him."
You glared back and faced him, "I'm literally 18 and he's 16! Don't say that like I'm some sort of creep!" You jokingly punched him on the shoulder and voiced an ora, to which he responded with tipping his hat down and turning his back on you, "Hmp— Oh, may you please tell Josuke that I could tend to his wounds? I don't wanna ruin their moment right now, so maybe later?"
Jotaro turned his head and nodded, "Coolness! Thanks, my dear ocean man!"
Several weeks have passed since yours and Mr. Joestar's arrival at Morioh, and you've grown closer to the group as to be expected. Okuyasu always goes out of his way to meet you at the hotel you're staying at because of how much he enjoys your pampering when he blurts to you about how his pomp-haired friend gets the ladies in school, he had even told you that Koichi had a scary girl obsessing over him, not forgetting to mention that she was cute anyway. You seldomly meet the said boy, Koichi, as he was not the type to go around town if not needed, and only accompanied him once when he walked his large fluffy dog. Josuke on the other hand, always comes with Okuyasu to the hotel but he doesn't speak to you and only observes your interactions with his friend and his father while you also played with the invisible baby they found, whose name is now Shizuka. You didn't know there was a relevant reason as to why he wouldn't talk to you even if you tried to start a conversation, so you shrugged it off and just shot him genuine smiles whenever your gazes met. You were technically the older sister in the gang and it would make sense that Jotaro was the older brother, but he was more of an uncle figure.
Josuke planned to continue his tsundere facade until he was sure of asking you out -on a date- for a hangout with just the two of you, but what he didn't expect was for a certain someone, who he just can't seem to get along with, to poof up and force him to ruin his own plans.
"Listen, listen! I met a Stand User earlier today. I was just doing my own thing when he took photos of me without my permission. He even directed me of what to do and straight up got mad when I hesitated! Turns out, he's a mangaka who found me as a good reference and I was like, good and not perfect? He glared at me for a second then he just summoned his Stand! Yo! It was a cute, white and gold dude! Of course he didn't get the chance to use the dude on me, I have my totally cute Stand too! Next thing I know, he invited me for coffee! Rad, huh?"
You didn't even need to mention his name for them to know who you were talking about. The two boys who listened, Josuke and Okuyasu, looked at each other in shock before talking to themselves like you weren't there. Calling him the 'spider-licking guy', badmouthing him and expressing every inch of their dislike for the man. Inviting you for coffee was a bad call, it just meant that you two became friends and scheduled a date. Josuke tried his best to make you back out of it, eventually talking to you all the time and taking care of you, his father and the baby, like the older brother —your partner— he wanted to be since the time he realized he likes you. He couldn't accept that the mangaka had the upper hand, so he tried to do everything he can to change that.
But of course, the 'pure love kind of guy' failed.
The day of your date with the great mangaka arrived. You were in a good mood as you prepared, the voice of Kai Harada playing on the background radio noise. The man had said that today is a sunny day, to your delight, but there is a chance of a hard gloomy storm at afternoon, to your dismay. If there's one thing about nature that you dislike the most, it's thunderstorms. Although those weren't mentioned, the anxiety of being out in the open while it occurred crept over you. You observed yourself at the vanity mirror: your hair fixed into a [H/S] that you do only for special occasions and a [F/C] [O/F] that fitted your style and body as you kept your face in a natural but fresh look, eyeing details of yourself to shrug off the previous thought.
It's now 1PM and you are finally face to face with the mangaka, seated outside the famous Cafe Rengatei in Morioh. You arrived earlier than the meeting time, making you certain that your efforts to fix yourself went to a shame.
"It seems you've made an effort for your meeting with me today. You look quite presentable," Rohan started, leaning on the chair as he crossed his arms and had his chin up.
You quirked a brow, copying his action, "And what does that imply, Mr. Good Reference?"
"It implies that you're a perfect reference right now so I'll be straight to the point of this meeting," He frankly stated. Puzzled at the word 'meeting', your brows creased, "I want you to let me use Heaven's Door on you, and you will be paid. Since I didn't get a good— let you get away before, I'm asking for the permission you're requiring me of. I heard from my friend, Koichi, that you might have an interesting story. I could have just used Heaven's Door on him, but his information of you is limited. So, is that settled?"
And here you thought this was a date.
You bit your cheek from the inside and held the clothing on your lap, "Yeah, yeah. When do we start? Oh, and you don't have to pay because you sounded real genuine and kind. Thank you very much!" You replied, a bit of sarcasm coming with it.
Rohan raised an eyebrow and battled with your blank stares before speaking, "Tch. I have the money to pay, [L/N]. Meet me at my house tomorrow morning. Don't make me wait." He grabbed his sketchbook from below the table and stood up, giving you one final, sassy look before he left.
You watched him walk away, sighing deeply as his form vanished. He got you hard with the coffee invitation and he didn't even stayed a little longer to order and enjoy an afternoon snack with you. Oh, right.
You were just acquaintances. Nothing more and maybe less. It's not that you liked him in a certain way, you were only bummed that you requested a day off for this. Taking care of the people you care about and studying for your medical course are much better than misinterpreting a business deal for a casual date. You sighed once again, lightly hitting your head on the table, "This is the work of the worst enemy Stand."
The disappointment took over your senses on your surroundings, so you became more oblivious to the Josuke that was watching you far behind.
And yes, he's been there all the time.
Shocking and unbelievable to the ears of the mutual friends of Rohan and Josuke, but the mangaka was the one to set you and the student up. It's true that Rohan had heard of you from Koichi, but that's not all. He had also heard that Josuke had been acting distant to you when all he talks about at school is.. well, you. How did he even know about that? It's absolutely not the work of Heaven's Door, Koichi just had to slip up.
You and Josuke both stayed at your respective places, unsure of what to do next now that Rohan had done his part. A few minutes passed, and you both sighed at the same time. You stood up, deciding that you'd go back at the hotel and play with the adorable Shizuka, while the nervous Josuke continued watching you, figuring out the right time to show up.
You were supposed to walk back, but then drops of water started falling from the sky. You opened your palm and looked up the sky, only to see gray colors eat up the blues. You closed your eyes and sighed once more, whispering to yourself, "This day is a work of an enemy Stand."
Not for Josuke who brought an umbrella that he'd share with you, though.
The drops of rain became a heavy storm within minutes, making you run to the nearest waiting shed. There were only hints of you being soaked, but it didn't help your body that had low resistance towards the cold. In this moment where you hugged yourself to keep your body heat, you remembered the Crusaders. The group of big men who all had a soft spot for you, and the small dog who accompanied you at your mischievous times. They were the group that always made sure to keep you warm, the group that always assured you that thunderstorms—
"AAAAH!"
You squealed upon hearing the deafening noise from above, the sound of pouring rain quickly enveloping after. You whimpered and tucked yourself in the corner of the shed, hands covering your ears and tightly gripping your now messed hair as you trembled greatly. Slowly and weakly, you dropped yourself, your knees meeting the coldness of the ground. This was supposed to be a nice day. A nice, enjoyable day that involved no stress and no professional work. Mr. Joestar also wanted you to enjoy but this, fighting back the urge to sob while you silently hollered in the storming public, isn't exactly your idea of spending your leisure time.
"[Y-Y/N]?"
Josuke stood just outside the waiting shed, a black umbrella, protecting him from the rain, in hand. He ran when he heard your scream, resulting to his shoes and pants to be thoroughly soaked. He looked at you with worry and guilt, although clueless as to what exactly caused your outspoken self to curl into a whimpering puppy. Rohan.. It must've been him. He shouldn't have just stood there watching, "[Y/N]..? Did Rohan do—"
A loud thunderstorm sounded once more, making you scream and push yourself to the corner. Josuke gasped, it's.. the thunderstorms that's causing this.
Josuke entered the shed and closed the umbrella, hanging it on the roof. You weren't paying him any of your attention, your conscious mind devoured by unsettling thoughts. Your phobia of thunderstorms was something you caught from your childhood. Something you caught from the freezing and lonely nights without your parents, people who you most expected to be there for you when you're being secluded by fright.
The boy who was now crouching in front of you noticed your lack of attention as he's been calling your name. He bit his lower lip, feeling more and more soft as each second passed. He should have known.. he usually did ask Mr. Joestar about you after all.
Josuke gave up on calling you and proceeded to his second move, which was to cover you with his gakuran. He stood up, unclasped the remaining buttons and gently enrobed you with the garment, slight joy sparking in him when you quickly accepted and wrapped yourself with it. He expected that you were still clueless of a person here with you, but you really are filled with surprises.
"T-thank you.. Angel.." You muttered, a serene feeling slowly emerging when you thought a kind citizen had randomly decided to be concerned over a breaking down woman. You exhaled deeply, eyes opening as your whole form has been blanketed by the coat.
"Angel? You think that suits me?"
You felt your heart skip a beat upon hearing the familiar cheerful voice. It wasn't some random citizen who helped you, of course it had to be someone you know.
You draped the coat over your shoulder and wrapped your body with it, head turning to the side where your sight met the ever-majestic boy's grin, hastily noticing his biceps as he only had a yellow sando as a top. Your eyes widened in surprise, bringing back the coat over your head to hide the creeping blush on your face. The turn of events had you sweeping away the thoughts of your phobia, at least.
"A-ah..? Of course it suits you! You're my.. our JoJo after all!" You faced him and answered after sighing inside the coat, trying to compose yourself, "Your g-gakuran is so warm, Josuke. I might just steal it now!"
Josuke let out a chuckle, comfortably glad that you feel better now. He had one more move up his sleep and he'd ecstatic if he could do it, but maybe some other time.. or later..? Woah there, he shouldn't be thinking about that right now. But for real, he's curious on.. how having you in his arms would feel. Your body insufferably close to his.. your loving arms wrapping around him as he shared his body heat so that you'd be shivering no more.. Sh*t, this is still a crush, right?
"U-uhm, Higashikata to e-earth..?"
"Ah? What? Oh! Yeah, sorry! W-were you saying something?"
Josuke got too far with his thoughts that he stayed still, staring at you with half-lidded eyes and a smirk, a pink shade on his cheeks which were becoming evident even with the storm blocking out the light from the sun. You didn't consider that he looked at you like a lovestruck boy and snapped him from his trance, concerned that he might be feeling cold now.
"I was asking if you.. uhm.. now that I think of it, I m-might sound like a creep," You said, still trembling. You closed your eyes and sighed, meeting his encouraging expression as you opened them again. A pursed smile formed on your lips, "You could have your coat back although I.. I was hoping if we could share it but—"
"Of course we can! I thought you'd never ask, [Y/N]!" Josuke jumped to his feet, a confident grin on his face. You looked up at him, confused, "Brr! I'm starting to feel cold too! Well?" He happily lied, crossing his arms and making an up and down motion over his biceps to add to his bluff. Josuke's not going to let this chance pass! You were the one to offer the.. intimate gesture, he'd be cursing himself forever if he messes this up.
You nodded with your mouth agape and tried to stand up on your feet. Your legs were numb for having to carry your weight on the ground, so it'd make sense if you stumbled for a bit. Fortunately, a strong and quick-thinking boy was there to catch you before it even happens, his hands —which flicked the coat— supporting your waist as you held on his wrists. Oh boy, why is it that you think he'd be a perfect gym partner?
"Perfect gym partner, huh? I wouldn't mind that too, Ms. [Y/N]!" Your eyes widened upon his words, "Yep, you just said it out loud!" Josuke laughed, giving you the urge to turn around in embarrassment but you couldn't, his stubborn hands locking you in place. An awkward silence engulfed as you looked into each other's eyes, the sound of pouring rain joining in again.
You gulped as Josuke sighed and cleared his throat, "I know this isn't a good moment to say what I'm about to say, but I don't think I could do it anywhere else without being awkward so I'm going to say it," Josuke sighed once more and you blink as a response. He sounded complacent yet also shakened while your confusion is getting ahead of you, "I'm really, REALLY going to say it now! I'm actually going to say it, will you let me say it? Uh.."
"..F*ck this is harder than I thought."
You creased your brows, adamantly switching to your sister form, "Language, JoJo!" You retreated your hands and tapped his cheeks, and.. you know you shouldn't have done that.
From another person's view, yours and Josuke's position just got more romantic than ever. Your small hands cupping his adoring face as his were firmly placed on your waist.. His almost bare top fighting the cold breeze brought by the storm just so you could be warm under the cover of his gakuran that was appealingly big on you.. This is much preferable than what Josuke daydreamed. You even called him JoJo, which he's never heard you call his nephew or his father with. Holy.. you're oblivious to the fact that you're setting the mood for him, aren't you?
You were about to pull your hands away when he swiftly locked your wrists, your waist now free from him. You gasped and felt your heart skip a beat. It was just like when you first heard his voice earlier. Being with him like this feels good but.. it doesn't feel right.
"I'm being pushy here, aren't I?" Josuke chuckled shakily, "I feel like bursting at this moment, so.. Ms. [Y/N], would ya listen? I know it'd be uncomfortable and freaky, but I seriously need to say it."
You barely nodded, his hands bringing down yours and holding it in his. He was looking down at the pairs, smiling at how yours fitted in his, "It's only been weeks since we've met— heck, since I've met you and Mr. Joestar, and this isn't really the right time for me to be having this.. puppy crush when enemy Stand Users are on the lose, but I don't usually crush over someone this hard." He grunted, his hands delicately squeezing yours, "I.. I like you, [Y/N]. Like, like-like like you. There.. I finally said it."
The moment would have been cute because of his mulish confession, but you just had to ruin it for the poor boy.
"Josuke we're.. we're family." Josuke flinched before looking at you, his arched brows hitting each other. The tables have turned, and he's the one that's waiting now, "Mr. Joestar, Jotaro.. they're like father and older brother to me while.." You sighed, successfully pulling your hands away from his weakened grip, "Josuke, I don't want to trade my close relationship with your father's family.. for a possibly temporary feelings for me."
Your words hit like Cupid shot their arrow backwards, but Josuke didn't let himself be completely fazed. He was taken aback for a second, but that doesn't mean he didn't expected this. He knew how much the Joestar Family meant to you. You're even proud that you owe your life to them, to such good people that were the epitome of justice and heroic greatness. He took note of that fact when he was getting to know you through his father, who seemed to enjoy telling stories about you. Somehow, he could say he was prepared for this.
"But, doesn't that mean if I proved my feelings aren't temporary and I'm proudly certain of it, I would have a chance with you?" Josuke grinned, tilting his head as he shove his hands in his pockets, "Also, Mr. Joestar approves of you being his daughter-in-law. Man, I'm just glad you didn't accept his offer to adopt you years ago. That would have sucked!"
Your lips opened and closed like a fish underwater, making Josuke smirk inwardly. You were almost speechless, and that's a good thing for him, "How did you.. Why do you even.." You stiffened, fiddling with his coat as you turned on to your side, facing the raining scenery, "Josuke, I don't know why you're doing this, b-but this ain't funny, y'know? Don't you like, see me as your older sister or—"
"At first," You glanced at Josuke who was now facing outside too, "When you introduced yourself as Mr. Joestar's caretaker, yeah," He stole a glance back and pouted, "But when we got to know you and literally took care of me like you're my caring girlfriend? Hell no. I could even bet Okuyasu also had a crush on you, but he told me you were like a mom, a cute mom at that." He shook his head, chuckling at what he said, "Misunderstanding your actions was a sh*tty move for me but I don't regret it one bit, Ms. [Y/N]."
There, Josuke did not just confess his romantic feelings to you, but also admitted how his decision to like you seemed inappropriate. It was valid nonetheless, as you weren't related to him by blood, but you take pride in being the Joestars' comrade —even if you seemed thirsty for them some times— and he acknowledges that.
No one gets to choose who they specifically prefer to be with, anyway. He had to 'Dora!' his way out of his boundaries with you or he would be lying to himself, which he dislikes the most, aside Rohan.
"Are you sure Mr. Joestar's okay with this?" You asked, sighing, "I don't mind giving you a chance now that—"
Josuke didn't even let you finish and proceeded to lock you in his arms, pulling you in excitement as his arms snaked around your neck and your head, "I said 'chance', JoJo! You haven't even asked me if you wanted me to be your girlfriend—"
"So you like me too?" Josuke cut you off again, smiling down at you. You sighed and nodded, accepting your defeat. He shouted a yes, an arm punching above, hitting the roof of the shed, "Aw—! But hey, you just admitted that you like me! Take that, Rohan!"
You slightly pulled away from Josuke, "What does Kishibe have to do with this?" You asked, glaring at him. Josuke shook his head, scratching the back of it as he grinned. Rohan totally had something to do with this as he didn't only set them up, but even tried to discourage the lively Josuke by saying that you'd reject him and tell him that you only see him as family. Technically, he was right— but that didn't last long!
You were going to ask about it again when a thunderstorm sounded, breaking down your collected spirit as you ended up holding yourself close to the boy in front of you. His playfulness aside, he fixed his gakuran that was still on you and wrapped you in his arms protectively, assuring you that you're going to be okay. Another thunderstorm followed, startling you even in his arms. You were a shaking mess, your fists grabbing a handful on the back of his sando, face buried on his chest. He should've been shivering from the cold all this time, but your presence provided warmth for him and he's grateful for that. Josuke willingly let you nuzzle yourself around him, knowing that it comforted you and it brought contentedness to his feelings.
"I hope you won't mind being the rainbow that brings color to my life, [Y/N]."
"Y-yeah, JoJo.. u-unless I strike you as a lightning w-when you break my heart.."
"I'm frightened that you can be scary while you're scared [Y/N] but.. sh*t, I just realized.."
"What i-is it now..?"
"It's also hot."
[End!]
