The back of the book calls “Blood Orange” a “highly emotional, important and timely poetry collection by Mx. Yaffa (They/She), a trans Muslic displaced Indigenous Palestinian.” I would have to agree, this book is highly emotional, important AND timely as it deals with themes of loss, belonging, queerness, and displacement. The poems talk candidly about the genocide of Palestinians, and the author’s experiences being diaspora, and it’s shown very well in the first poem “Diaspora”.

My favorite poems in this collection were “Count”, “Trans and Palestine”, and “Lines and Circle”. But I also hold fast to the notion that this book should be read in its entirety without skipping anything. If you can find a copy of this poetry collection, I highly recommend.

I found out about this book while scrolling through NetGalley, and the second I saw that it was a prequel to Elatsoe, I had to read it.

This is a prequel about Elatsoe's grandmother Shane as a 17 year old girl, but you don't have to read Elatsoe to know what's going on, and both books can be read in either order as standalones.

This book is so well-crafted and thoughtful; it took me a little while to fully immerse myself in the story, because the setting and vibe is so different from Elatsoe, and it is a little slower paced, but once I got into the groove, the story flowed over me.

We follow Shane as she tries to figure out the mystery of her mother's and a child's disappearance, and along the way we learn about her history, as well as explore her relationships with her family and friends.

A strong focus of the book is on Shane's grief; grief from losing not only her home and her family members, but also losing her culture and language. This book tackles the harms caused by colonialism, which goes beyond stealing land, but also erases culture and peoples.

At its heart, this book is about family and community. At times Shane may feel alone, like she has to take on her burdens by herself, but her friends and family are always there for her (dead or alive).

I also loved Rovina Cai's lovely illustrations at each chapter heading; they tell a story parallel to the main story, and they add another layer of depth.

Overall, this is book was written full of heart, and it shows <3

Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba – the catastrophe that led to the displacement and expulsion of more than 700,000 people – and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers capture and rape a young Palestinian woman, and kill and bury her in the sand. Many years later, a woman in Ramallah becomes fascinated to the point of obsession with this ‘minor detail’ of history. A haunting meditation on war, violence and memory, Minor Detail cuts to the heart of the Palestinian experience of dispossession, life under occupation, and the persistent difficulty of piecing together a narrative in the face of ongoing erasure and disempowerment. “there are some who consider this way of seeing, which is to say, focusing intently on the most minor details, like dust on the desk or fly shit on a painting, as the only way to arrive at the truth and definitive proof of its existence.”

WHAT I THINK... I'm going to think about this one for a long time, I'm sure and naturally I ran out of words to describe how much I cried (this is not a recommendation, it's a necessity so you should read it) 5/5 ⭐️

THEY!!! Honestly they've displaced Feanel as my canon OTP, I think. Thanks in large part to the efforts of @swanmaids and @imakemywings and the first Starwing fic I read, Family Pulled From a Flood by @aipilosse.

It's easy I think to overlook them as existing in the realm of myth, and a convenient joining of familial lines. But my eyes have been Opened to the gritty reality of their shared trauma, the beauty of their finding each other, their heroic devotion to each other and to saving the world.

Ramble about Spectrobes world building: Humanity's place in space.

It's kind of wild that this game had more to be discovered because I grew up and replayed it and was able to understand the premise more.

⏰️Spanish is my mother language so replaying it in English when I was older got me a little messed up with the existentialism, like how Nanairo is the birthplace of humanity yet the other solar systems you visit, the "children" of Nanairo, are abandoned or destroyed by krawl.

⭐️ The High Krawl also had some existential implications, they show us Krawl aren't mindless monsters or "demons" or whatever, they're just as alive as humans and Spectrobes, they even have more sapience than Spectrobes... It's all so bittersweet, because yes Rallen saved Nanairo, and Jeena recovered history, but we didn't get to deeply understand why Krawl do what they do, and the krawl war goes on and on, Jado doesn't die, Krux doesn't die... Etc etc space horror?

🌐 Btw my theory about the underlying message is that exploration for the sake of getting humanity's mark on everything, and colonizing other planets might as well end up biting us in the butt because of the pure audacity to assume "intelligent life" has to be sapient (and our especific cultural sapiece btw), we can easily destroy life because we want to rush into space.

🌪 Maybe Nanairo humans tried to be a type 3 civilization, krawl felt threatened by being displaced by humans, Spectrobes simply can buffer humans being killed by krawl because humans can bond and train animals- so Spectrobes aren't "angels" either, but it's scary to think Geos can destroy planets as well if a human just tells them to.

⏳️ There's some mythological and/or religious themes to Spectrobes too. They mention Fate, Krux talks about Kaio like it's god, some savior that comes around only when real bad shit will happen to humans... He, aspiring to be a savior as well? ends up on the opposite end, becoming more alike the creatures that were causing him desperation. Jeena frames this as Krux reaching for power and sacrificing his ideals and humanity in the process.

HEY THANKS! sorry this took a while, I'm gonna rant about BJ & cigarettes under the cut...

One of baby it's you's main conflicts/themes (to me) is the conscious choice to cast off unhealthy coping mechanisms/self-destructive behavior...choosing/creating your own happiness, moving forward and all that! BJ smokes cigarettes through most of both sides now. When he's in precarious mental/emotional situations, he picks unhealthy ways to cope (in MASH: violent anger/breaking things, gambling, excessive drinking, displacing his feelings onto others - usually Hawk).

I wanted to make this struggle clear, and have a way to refer to it visually in baby it's you. And also for BJ's relationship to cigarettes as the fic opens to be indicative of how he's changed in the time since the end of both sides now (where he quits smoking at the end!) From baby it's you chapter 2:

BJ lay alone on the couch. He’d fallen asleep with his neck at an odd angle and now it was stiff. He missed Hawkeye’s weight and warmth immediately. He stared at the ceiling and listened to Hawkeye talk to Trapper. He heard Hawkeye’s rolling, lovely laugh and murmurings of excitement. Evidently, he was Hawk’s best man.  BJ felt lonely again, even though he wasn’t alone. He wanted a cigarette. He dug his fingernails into his palms instead and waited for Hawkeye’s uneven footsteps, coming back to him. 

Even in this brief moment, he's choosing not to fall back into his smoking habit. He's choosing Hawkeye (who's always wanted him to quit) instead. We see the trigger for the bad coping mechanism (Trapper as Hawk's best man) and then see him struggle to choose how to cope. Does he have faith in Hawk's love/commitment/loyalty? or is he going to let his insecurities win?

And Erin's aware of this! It's another thing they have in common (she shares his anger/his tendencies to close off or run when he's upset/his anxiety). She associates his quitting with Hawkeye. She can see how her dads make each other better/happier/more confident. In chapter 3:

Erin had been glad when Dad quit smoking. It was a compulsion, she understood. Erin picked at her cuticles until they bled, which was sort of the same. She was glad he was less on edge. She was glad his worry for Hawkeye was no longer smothering and raw, as it had been. She was glad they were in Maine. She was excited to see the house: because it was Hawkeye’s childhood home, because it was likely full of old photos and books and fascinating knick knacks for her to ask him a million questions about, and because she’d been promised her own room. Dad wouldn’t need to smoke in a place like that.

I want to talk about Peg too...BJ also smokes with her! Having trouble with words so here are some arrows: smoking -> courting Peg -> repressing his sexuality -> lying to Peg -> maintaining destructive habits (smoking & drinking heavily) in order to maintain marriage...

But at the same time there's something sexy/attractive in the act of smoking. In chapter 2:

She met his eyes. Her jaw was sharp and tight. She was gripping the railing so hard that her knuckles had gone white. BJ took a few hasty drags from their shared cigarette and then put it out. He could taste the waxy, floral, chemical flavor of her lipstick. It was like kissing her, indirectly. They hadn’t yet kissed. They’d been courting at a glacial pace. It seemed like the only way to do it, when you were really serious about a woman. “I’m a little afraid you’re going to break my heart, BJ,” Peg said. “I think I may like you too much.” “I’d never break your heart,” BJ blurted.

I wanted him to be smoking in this really tense will they won't they moment because it's another instance of BJ choosing one path over another. He chooses to self-destruct/hide who he is. 1946 BJ is a different guy!

And then GOD IM SORRY THIS IS SO LONG the actual chapter titled cigarettes. From chapter 10:

“What are you looking for?” Hawkeye said.  BJ turned away and picked up his jacket. He fished around in its pockets until he found the packet of gum, and then ripped it open. “I wanted to…god, Hawk, I’m sorry. I was resisting the urge to buy cigarettes,” he said.  Hawkeye looked stricken. “You’re smoking?” he said. “No, I’m chewing gum,” BJ said.  He was exhausted, all of a sudden, and his eyes were tearing. “I’m sorry,” BJ said.  He pinched the bridge of his nose and then pressed his fingers to his eyelids. “What are you sorry for?” Hawkeye said. He reached out, grabbed the end of BJ’s tie, and tugged.

BJ chooses Hawk! He chooses gum over cigs. He chooses to to fight his jealous/angry/insecure impulses and be open with Hawk.
