- comments on the -3° degree weather (at the CCTV New Year’s Eve Gala) LYN: Usually when I’m at these events, they’re filmed indoors but this time it was outdoors. I was too careless. I thought there would be fans present- maybe if they knew I was at this program they would watch- so I wanted to dress a little more coolly. So I wore a long coat- my fans always tell me I look good in them. When I left home my assistants were asking me if I wanted to grab a padded jacket to wear and I insisted, “No! Bring my long coat.” I thought I would make a cool entrance. And then- later when I exited the hotel doors I was conformed. The cold blew straight through me. Whatever wool or dog fur- it doesn’t work. I got on the car and blasted the heater. I hadn’t even started yet and was already shivering. LYN: Later the program crew was very nice to me and gave my makeup artist (Xiao Q) one of their padded jackets, so they gave their jacket to me. Ah~ In the winter, it’s best to still wear down jackets, friends. Wear cotton padded jackets- it’s thicker and can withstand the wind and keep you warm. I know you see all the Korean oppas in the dramas wearing long coats during the winter- that’s purely for aesthetics. As for whether they’re cold or not, only the person wearing the coat knows. It’s winter, so wear the down jacket. LYN: I got through one rehearsal wearing the jacket and then later for the performance I powered my way through it in my suit. It was fine once I started singing. I didn’t feel the cold, probably because all my focus was on the music and I forgot about it. Ive never heard someone curse me out so badly. I can’t believ your cursing doesn’t even have curse words in it. “Have you passed CSE Level 6?” I learned how to be a cook; I went to a technical school. Tell me, in what region is there a technical school that makes the students take the CSE Level 6?? Why didn’t I just take the IELTS?? I went to a technical school! I learned how to cook!! I took Level 6 test on Cooking! I have certifications! C: Being a cook doesn’t prevent you from taking the IELTS. LYN: Right- that comes from personal mental limitations though. How can you learn how to use a knife and also learn English at the same time? There’s only so much you can handle. If you focus your attention on one place, somewhere else is going to suffer. I you split your attention, it will effect both. While I was in school, I just focused on being a good cook.

This happens to me a lot- I just tend to get mad easily (火大). I suffer from excessive internal heat (上火), I don’t know why. I have an affinity to fire.

C: Did you make any friends on Scream Night? LYN: /laughs/ We all know each other already, what friends are there to make? I mean, we’ve all seen each other before- in this industry we all bump into one another on occasion. We don’t need to go and make friends. Do you want me to go around saying, “Hello! Let’s be friends!”? Watching it you might think it’s full of celebrities, but for me- not saying that I am a celebrity, but I’ve been in this industry for 5-6 years already- I just think that celebrities are all normal regular people. I used to be in awe. For example, the first drama I shot was with HZT and I was nervous to meet him. I was afraid he would hit me. He has a pretty explosive personality, so I was afraid he would hit me. I wasn’t afraid I couldn’t beat him in a fight; I know he learned martial arts growing up but I wasn’t afraid I wouldn’t be able to beat him. I was just afraid of the notion: if he hit me, should I fight back or not? If I fight back, it would look really bad for the drama. If I don’t fight back I’d be a coward. So when meeting celebrities sometimes even I’m a little uneasy. You all know HZT is very… passionate. Very excitable. I was afraid he would hit me. I also am nervous when meeting celebrities for the first time. But as the years pass and you meet more and more people at some point you’ve met them all and you realize that they’re all just people. It’s no big deal.

C: Lao-da, why are you wearing the same clothes as me? LYN: What do you mean- are you also wearing this same hoodie? Just consider it as if I have a secret crush on you, okay? I purposely chose a special day to wear a couple outfit with you. You can think that if you want. As long as you’re happy. What do you mean “why are you wearing the same clothes as me”?? We just happened to buy the same piece of clothing, is all. LYN: How about this? After the stream is over today, I’ll raffle this off on my stream. I do my best not to wear the same thing as you anymore. As if you think I’m sentimental about it?? C: Can you see where you’re walking in those glasses for Ultimate Note? LYN: Actually I couldn’t see. Those glasses are specially treated- it looks like shades but there’s a layer of black film on the inside. We were filming in underground passageways and caves and the lighting in these spaces is already dim so with the shades I couldn’t see anything. It was a strain on the eyes. It look a lot of effort to see anything clearly. Because it’s already dark, wearing shades, with another ayer of dark film on top of that. Why was the film needed? Because at some angles you would have been able to see my eyes and for that role you shouldn’t be able to. C: Then you didn’t need any eye makeup. LYN: Wow, that drama was so easygoing for me in comparison to other dramas, because I really didn’t need any makeup. Maybe just a darker yellowish base, and then I’d just put on the shades and start shooting. TXj was the same- I didn’t need much makeup. Some actors nowadays spend four hours in makeup- I don’t even know for what. Especially for guzhuang dramas. Men are okay, but some actresses spend four to five hours in makeup. That’s tough.

C: Lao-da, take the beanie off. LYN: Why should I listen to you? Are you my stylist? Why are you telling me how to wear my hat? It’s because I haven’t washed my hair- no- because it has no shape. I wore the hat to look more neat.

- if you can’t beat the scalpers for concert tickets, be sure not to buy from them so that they end up wasting their money. they’ll think that no one wants LYN’s concert tickets, so they’ll stop buying them. at that point, the fans can buy the tickets normally and go to the concert.

C: We’re just afraid that no one will attend your concert and you’d be sad. (reverse psychology) LYN: Thanks for thinking of me. C: Why is there such a loud electrical sound? LYN: Is there? That’s the second comment I’ve seen on it. Is there an electrical sound? Maybe watch out, is your phone releasing it’s charge? Or- I know. When I’m letting the song play, the bass notes are pretty heavy so your headphones aren’t balanced and you hear a buzzing? It might be the song. /plays it/ Or your phone is releasing charge. - enjoys the fact that someone said they came to “attend” his stream, because that gives off more of a sense of participation, as opposed to “watch” his stream. I only had three dramas last year, and YNGS took one of the spots, so… that’s a pretty happy thing. C: The stage performance was pretty unique as well. LYN: Of course, and I have to be thankful that they designed such a stage for me. It was meaningful- starting from me as a viewer, to a singer, to an actor, and who knows what will come after.

C: Are you in A Journey to Glow (Yi Nian Jiang Nan)? LYN: That has nothing to do with me. Ning Yuanzhou is long dead. C: Is it written following YNGS? LYN: I don’t know! Go ask the screenwriter. It has nothing to do with me.

- been thinking about what type of dramas he wants to act in; wants to try a modern crime/spy drama. does not want to act in a pure romance drama- there could be love in it, as long as that’s not all the drama’s about. maybe something with a superpower or special ability. or wuxia drama. - dramas (that already have a fixed ML) like to promote their show by first saying he LYN wil be the ML- so that people come in hoardes to curse him out but this also as the effect of getting the drama attention. then later the drama announces the real casting and people are ok with it “as long as it’s not LYN” :|

C: Go act as a student. LYN: You must be crazy. I can’t act as a student. Maybe a teacher- like a music teacher, or some little kid’s parent. A single father. He has a daughter and sends her to school everyday, but he’s actually an assassin. Kill them all! Every time he finishes a mission he writes “kill them all” on the wall. When hes done with his missions, he comes to pick his daughter up from school. One day he finishes a mission but finds that his daughter has been kidnapped, so the rest of the story is how he gets her back. But I can’t act as a student. LYN: In the process of saving his daughter, he develops feelings for her teacher. Because the drama can’t NOT have romance. So this teacher is a young and beautiful woman, and she is also anxious to find the daughter back. While finding his daughter together, they develop feelings for each other- because he’s a single father. In the end you find out that the teacher is a spy for the bad guys, but she’s already in love with the ML so in a critical moment, takes a bullet for the ML. In the end, because of love, she betrays her own boss. The ML emerges from the wreckage carrying his daughter, and that’s how the story ends. This time I didn’t have much going on and I arrived in Macau early, so I decided to walk it. Most of the time when I have performances, I’m afraid it will delay my performance- because I’m very nervous before I sing. I’ve been on a lot of stages, but I still get nervous every time. For these types of events I always sing at least one or two, to share fortune. But this time my performance was nearer to the end- it was the last song. So I decided to walk the red carpet. LYN: My studio came and asked me, “Boss, do you want to reconsider?” I questioned, “What do you mean??” It’s bc ZLYM just finished airing and I was already being called ugly for it, so if I walked on the red carpet and the media took a bunch of raw photos of me I’d be setting myself up to be called ugly again. “What would we do? We’re afraid of losing our jobs.” XD I told them, “If you really cared so much about what other people think, then you won’t accomplish anything.” My work ethic is: I just want to be able to do whatever I feel like doing. I’m not doing anything illegal. I don’t care what other people think of me. So I told them, “I know you’re saying this because it’s what’s best for me, but… I am also worried about it. But not to worry, this time, I will prepare.”  - applied face and eye masks for the three days leading up to the event, woke up one hour early and took a hot bath to reduce water swelling (sweat it out), took a guasha to his face and neck LYN: I asked my makeup artist, “What do you think? I’m not that swollen today, am I?” They said “You still are, a little. It looks like you just woke up.” I replied, “There’s no helping it. Let’s just do it.” - still agonizing over whether to walk it or not, 15 minutes before leaving the hotel room. - ended up walking the red carpet, bc he wanted to represent YNGS. - this is why he likes shootng night scenes, because he looks thinner at night. morning or daytime scenes, he looks swollen.

C: What did you talk about with Zhang Songwen-laoshi? LYN: He said, “LYN, you look too swollen.” LYN: That’s a joke! Don’t take it seriously. If you take it seriously, you lose.

Anyway, wish you a quick recovery. Don’t move around and make sure it’s well-healed otherwise it’ll bring you more discomfort in the future. Sometimes my foot where I broke it still hurts. :( I don’t know if that’s psychological, or what.

C: Did you make a mistake singing 奉上 on Scream Night? LYN: I repeated myself for a line in the beginning, you mean? Was that a mistake? - getting defensive X’D (it was a mistake- a result of muscle memory) LYN: I did sing too early. What about it? As long as I don’t admit it, it’s fine. C: I thought it was a mistake at first, then I wondered if it was designed that way. LYN: It was designed that way. :) I was just proving that I was singing live. C: Was it necessary? LYN: What do you care?!? It’s my performance, so my design. Whether it’s necessary or not was my call, not yours. I think it was VERY necessary!

LYN: What about it??? - proving that he could adlib the beginning of (nearly) any song without it looking like a “mistake” LYN: (narrating) Truth be told, I was a little flustered. As soon as I started singing along to the opening notes, I thought in my mind, “Oh, damn it! Why did I sing it out loud?? How strange! What do I do?” But I quickly adjusted my composure and started to act. Then, I sang normally. It matters not. I’ll just pretend it didn’t happen. LYN: You definitely cannot start scaring oneself. (“自己吓自己” is a dubbing meme)

C: Will you gift an autograph at your concert? LYN: No. I wouldn’t be able to sign so many. If one stop is 10k seats, there’d be at least 7-8k in attendance. If I sign 7-8k autographs… there’s really NO NEED. I’d die trying to sign them all. LYN: Let’s do a reverse fan-support. When you come to my concert, bring me your signed autographs. That’d be fun. Usually it’s you who want your idol’s autograph. This time, bring yours to my concert and you can drop them off in a box for me. C: Do you want a “to:”? LYN: Okay. C: Don’t burn them. Took some notes from the Wild Life retrospective episode of the Imp & Skizz podcast featuring Grian because I thought the behind the scenes info was really interesting!

(3:15) The wild cards were all kept totally secret from the players (apart from Grian), with the exception of the superpowers and finale (as they required the players to set keybinds)

(3:45) The players were given files containing the required mods each week, which were named things like "creeper rain" to throw them off

(4:12) Wild cards were a combination of data packs and mods

(4:38) Grian told them not to read the folder name to avoid spoilers (which is kind of impossible), so everyone fully believed there would be creeper rain lol. Grian was saying it in jest but everyone took it seriously and were apologetic about having seen it, to which Grian told them not to worry

(6:58) Grian originally contacted a data pack dev called Brace for help with programming the wild cards. Some, like the shrinking/growing could be achieved with minecraft attributes, but the snails were too janky and unusable. Grian still liked the idea though, so he reached out to mod developers Henkelmax and Breadloaf, who designed the pathfinding/behaviour from scratch

(8:49) They had a debugging mode used to test the pathfinding of the snails, shown in the podcast and in Grian's credits

(10:09) Grian wants most of the credit to go to the development team and artists, as he was mostly in charge of ideas & organization!

(10:39) Grian's only regret with the snails was that they were too fast in session 3, leading to unexpectedly many deaths. They were apparently not so difficult to get away from during testing, but perhaps the testers were more used to them than the players were

(11:44) Grian: "We did develop to the lowest common denominator" ie. prioritizing how players would struggle over how worrying about if players would do too well

(12:56) Oli's voice for the snails was iconic. It cost Impulse a life because he intentionally stayed closer to it to hear the voice lol

(13:42) Danny was in charge of the snail models and animations

(14:11) During testing, the snails just sounded like Oli, which made it feel weird. They pitched up his voice so that it'd be less immediately recognizable

(15:18) The snails' jumping attack was meant to be clearly telegraphed: they would stop, wiggle, make a "ooeee" sound before jumping. Many players had their friendly creatures volume turned very low/off (as cows and other mobs are loud), which made this attack much less obvious for them

(16:57) The growing/shrinking had the least testing done for it, as it was the simplest conceptually and to program. This meant that the falling off of blocks due to the shrinking hitboxes wasn't anticipated

(17:55) Before the 1st session, Grian told them that he didn't think anyone would die to the wild card. Pearl's death made Grian pretty nervous, as he didn't want everyone dying too early in the season

(19:29) 6 lives were given, knowing that many of the death to the wild cards were unexpected/unfair. The intent was for ~3 lives to be allocated for wild cards, and ~3 for PvP.

(21:13) The developers were all fans of the Life Series!

(22:43) The shrinking/growing was intentionally pretty simple to ease players/viewers into the concept and build up toward more dramatic wild cards like the snails

(25:38) In the hunger episode, Grian didn't know which foods would be good

(25:58) Grian thinks that "it's unfair that Grian already knows everything" is valid criticism, but that it's important for him to be involved with the ideas. Having someone else do that is like having someone else record his videos: Life Series is his brainchild

(26:35) Well before the season began, while they were still developing the concept, Grian asked the other players for wild card ideas that would meet a few criteria. All of them ended up being unused for one reason or another. Impulse thinks his ideas were very "inside the box" because he was viewing things through what was possible in vanilla Minecraft. His idea was to have a scavenger hunt where the players would search to find a relic. The first person to find it would get a buff. Skizz's idea was for every player to turn into a random passive mob for every given interval of time. They would have to find every other player of the same mob type as them or else the whole group loses a life.

(29:44) The food qualities were weighted by the rarity of the item, so very common blocks like dirt and cobblestone would never give anything good. The other items were randomly selected

(30:23) Regular blocks/items cannot be made edible normally, so they had to circumvent that and custom code a fix for items not stacking correctly

(32:41) While a lot of players do want to win, the main priority is creating entertainment, which prioritizes playing recklessly

(33:20) The food wild card wasn't included in the finale because it would've felt like "too much". There was a higher risk of technical issues since it changed the data values of items, and Grian didn't want someone's last death to be because they ate their sword. In his mind, it was a good and fun wild card, but didn't need to be repeated in the finale. Impulse points out that they all would have collected more rare items by that point, removing the incentive to search for blocks to eat

(33:46) The wild cards in the finale were nerfed from their original sessions. The shrinking/growing had a smaller height range, the snails moved slower, etc.

(36:21) The personalized snail skins were a late addition by Danny, who made 18 skins very quickly

(36:49) Grian did not anticipate the snails becoming as popular with fans as they were. After the session released, they had the idea to release the snail merchandise, which directly funded the rest of the season

(39:20) Grian spent what "felt like every day" testing with the developers. They'd record the sessions on Tuesdays, meet up with the dev team, talk about what need to be done, testing, bugs, etc, edit and upload on Saturday, and would get a few days grace before starting again

(40:01) After the snail session, Grian was worried that the season would be very short due to all the deaths. They were considering toning down the later wild cards but ultimately didn't change them too much

(40:36) The time wild card was carefully balanced. If it had gone even a little faster, many players likely would have died because they wouldn't have time to react to threats like baby zombies or creepers.

(40:57) While sessions normally run for a variable amount of time, session 4 was hardcoded at 2 hours. Grian ended the session ~10 minutes early, just after they hit max speed, because he felt like things were getting dicey

(42:46) When the wild card first activates, it looks a lot like the server had frozen or crashed. Grian told the players before the session started that it would look like the game was broken, but that it isn't broken. Skizz tabbed out anyway and missed the beginning 😔

(43:30) Having the rain start just as the wild card began was a good visual indicator of time slowing down. This was a suggestion from the dev team (probably Brace)

(44:41) Impulse and Grian "cheesed" the end of the session by going branch mining. Grian wanted players to take advantage of the wild cards (eg. mining quickly, helping to kill someone), and not have them just be an annoyance.

(45:30) Keeping the client and server-side time stay in sync was challenging. The sky's motion was changed to be smoother on client-side. The players were also not as fast as the server (around 2x faster), the server was going faster than that, and the time of day was even faster

(46:56) The sounds were pitched up/down based on the speed to add to the effect

(27:46) In testing, if the players were made 7x faster, it would be basically unplayable, which was why it was capped at 2x speed. This made mobs very dangerous, as they were now faster than players and could catch up to you and kill you easily

(49:01) On several occasions, they had to extend the fuse duration of creepers to make them more fair. In the time session, their speed was only increased by ~10%

(49:39) Usually, Grian was the one to test the wild cards and notice when things like creeper speed would be an issue, since he was the one with experience making videos

(50:50) A challenge with balancing wild cards is accounting for the playstyles of so many players: reckless players like Scar and Skizz, "kind and gentle" players like Bigb who would stay off to the sides, and "the sweat squad" (Scott, Impulse) who play very cautiously

(52:48) Trivia Bot was the only wild card that was not planned in advance. Grian was struggling to come up with a wild card for that episode, and wanted to have a wild card available that could give people lives in case many people died to early wild cards without it feeling cheap.

(53:33) Trivia seemed a little boring on its face, so presentation was essential

(54:34) This one made Grian the most stressed due to all the moving parts involved in making it (coding and pathfinding mostly by Henkelmax, visuals by Hoffen, audio/music, questions)

(55:08) Trivia Bot's design was based on Grumbot and Mettaton from Undertale. Hoffen drew concept art shown in the video

(58:32) They show Trivia Bot's custom animation for becoming a snail and it's really cool

(59:12) The music was the most stressful part of the project. Grian spent 2-3 days looking through Epidemic Sounds for a Trivia Bot theme song and couldn't find anything good. He commissioned Zera @hopepetal for a theme song, which is played in the podcast. However, Grian realized he needed a full audio package, so he commissioned Oli late in development, who created the final soundtrack and many audio variations

(1:01:38) Grian wants to send appreciation for everyone who worked on the project, even if their work ultimately went unused

(1:02:58) Skizz was happy to give back however he could by staying on standby in the final episode as a zombie, as the players were able to "reap all the benefits" of the hard work of the development team

(1:05:21) Grian didn't know any of the trivia questions beforehand, which were done by fans of the series. The goal was for ~50% of the questions to be answered correctly, which was approximately met

(1:07:11) Players couldn't get questions about themselves because it would be too easy. This would encourage players to leave their bot, allowing other players to mess with them

(1:07:57) Grian felt a little left out from the discovery element of the wild cards, and decided to mess with Scar by hiding his bot. He wasn't expecting Scar to die from it, and could tell that he was genuinely a little upset by it. Grian felt bad about it, which led to a genuine in-game alliance between them

(1:12:32) Grian was very close to letting Trivia Bot give lives as rewards, but decided it would feel too cheap

(1:14:38) Mob swap was slightly toned down, with more camels and sniffers spawning

(1:15:07) Evokers didn't drop totems anymore. Instead, there was a minuscule chance a warden or wither would spawn, which would drop a totem if killed. Grian was a little disappointed that the warden got cheesed in the end

(1:17:45) Having the mobs start passive and turn hostile was mostly for the presentation, building anticipation, and so players could predict where mobs would spawn and react accordingly, making things feel less unfair

(1:20:32) There was no superpower made for Skizz (or Mumbo presumably)

(1:20:38) The superpowers were another late addition. There was a large design doc where Grian created all the powers, which were handed over to Henkelmax and completed over 4 days

(1:21:42) Grian avoided superpowers involving strength, that could cause someone to die easily. Most of the powers were social or movement-based, which couldn't be used for offence as easily

(1:22:25) Some powers were randomly assigned, others weren't. Impulse's was random. Cleo's, Bigb's, Lizzie's, Grian's were assigned.

(1:24:25) Grian gave himself the mimic because it could easily backfire (like in Grian's fall damage death), and because it would've been confusing for a player who wasn't aware of the other powers. They likely would've spent the episode just figuring out how everything worked and not actually using the power to its best ability

(1:33:38) Talk on how the series "standard" rules evolved since 3rd Life. There was no keep inventory, and no restrictions on enchanting levels or potions, which created slow or unbalanced fights

(1:36:23) 3rd Life was designed to be an experimental series, which made Grian eager to improve it. For example, some people just weren't dying in 3L, leading to the boogeyman in LL, and so on

(1:37:17) The goal with the seasons isn't to one-up the previous one, but to create a different experience every time, which keeps things engaging for the creators

(1:38:31) At the end of each session, Grian would ask the group if they had fun and how they felt about the wild cards. According the Skizz, the answer was "a resounding yes"

(1:39:08) Grian had moments throughout the season where he personally felt like things didn't go well for him, and was anxious for the rest of the group's episodes. Things worked out while editing the raw footage, though. His issues were never with the wild cards themselves, but his own actions (traps not working, spending too long branch mining), but would always find funny moments in his footage

(1:43:41) Everyone in the Life Series cast genuinely likes and genuinely respects everybody else in the group. This allows them to make the show and get mad at each other, because they know it's all just in-character

(1:44:50) It'd be hard to top Wild Life in spectacle, and Grian doesn't want to start an arms race with himself. The next season could potentially be closer to 3rd Life, but Grian's not sure yet. For Grian, Wild Life was the most enjoyable

(1:45:20) Grian: "As long as people keep enjoying [the Life Series] then I'd love to keep doing it"

(1:49:35) With the finale, Grian knew how the wild cards played out the previous sessions and was able to adjust them

(1:49:56) Grian's goal was to create safe chaos where everyone knew what was happening and wouldn't die to them, which didn't go entirely to plan. The snails were 60% of their original speed and people still died

(1:51:03) Grian made a precise timeline of when each wild card would start/stop, it wasn't randomized.

(1:54:16) All the superpowers were randomized, with Bdubs' power being removed from circulation because it didn't have much use in a finale setting

(1:56:10) It was important for Grian that in the final moments, the wild cards were removed, so there were no interruptions. The timing worked out well because there were a few people left and it ended within ~10 minutes (this implies that the change wasn't based on # of players alive, as people had speculated based on Gem's death)

(1:58:48) The players all randomly switched to zombie skins throughout the session to mess with people on NameMC. Well-played :)

Who are the hostages still held by Hamas?

On October 7, 2023, 253 Israelis and foreign nationals were kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas and gazan civilians. Since then, 105 were released in a prisioner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas and 3 were rescued.

However, 60 remain in captivity [as of 02/09/24] (4 of those were kidnapped prior to 2023). A recent investigation has concluded that more than a fifth of the hostages are dead and the fate of some other hostages remains unknown. This video explains how doctors determine which hostages are dead, based on the nature of their injury and by analyising footage and the victims' last phone calls. Additionally, during the operation in Gaza, the IDF has recovered the bodies of a few victims and returned to their families for burial.

Since I couldn't find this all in one place, I've compiled a list of: 1) hostages who are presumed alive; 2) hostaged whose death has been reported/confirmed; 3) hostages who were released or rescued. In the group of hostages presumed to be alive who haven't been released, the youngest is 1-year-old Kfir Bibas and the oldest hostage is Iraqi-born 85-year old Shlomo Mansour.

As we learn more information, I'll continue to update this post.

They need to come back home. I'm hoping for more successful rescue operations soon. Keep them in your thoughts.

'54: Mar. 29, Las Vegas City Commission approves construction of Moulin Rouge. The project was launched by partners including New York restaurateur Louis Rubin, Beverly Hills developers Alexander & Henry Bisno (Bisno & Bisno co.), and smaller investors.

'54: Jul. 16, Groundbreaking.

'55: Apr. 6, Fire destroys the "motel wing" (Montmartre Motel) during construction. The fire does not delay the main hotel.

'55: May 24, MR preview opening, and debut Tropi-Can-Can show in the Cafe Rouge Theatre Restaurant; public opening follows on May 26. Owners, the Moulin Rouge Associates, include the Bisnos and Rubin among a group of over 20. Possible other owners include Joe Louis (2%), Joe West, Aron Blum, Edna Shulman, and Mark Lipsky. African-American staff include Joe Louis, host; Sonny Boswell, former Harlem Globetrotters, general manager; Jimmy Gay of Las Vegas, personnel director. MR's "late show" plays nightly starting on opening night. The hotel portion of MR was not fully completed at the time of opening. (RJ 5/24/55, RJ 5/27/55)

'55: Jun. 1, first known lawsuit against MR from contractor, Lawrence Hawthorne. (RJ 6/1/55)

'55: Oct. 5, City of Las Vegas threatens MR license unless finances and owners are disclosed.

'55: Oct. 10, MR closes. It is the first major Las Vegas hotel to close, immediately following legal action taken by Bartenders Union Local 165 and Culinary 226 over unpaid wages.

'55: Oct. 19, MR files petition for bankruptcy. A report from proceedings in Jan. '56 says, "Some 300 creditors have $850,000 in claims now pending. Among them, 185 local creditors including engineers, plumbers, electricians [and] employees..." (RJ 1/16/56)

'56: Jan., Montmartre Motel (adjoining the hotel) is open. Whether the motel, operated by Albert Childs, was open prior is unclear. The MR attraction board was moved from the front of the hotel, slightly west to the front of the motel.

'56: Nov. 27, Bankruptcy sale. Lone bid of $470,000 rejected.

'58: Nov., Leo Frey (Leroy Investment Co.) awarded the hotel by court. Frey, “a sizeable investor in the original corporation which owned the hotel and the partnership which operated it” (RJ 11/25/58). Frey is denied gaming license, reopens hotel and coffee shop. Other individuals later denied gaming license “because of unsuitable backgrounds of the landlords Leo, Herbert, and Karl Frey” (RJ 3/21/69).

'85: Joe & Sarann Preddy, and Joe Walker lease Club Rouge and the bar.

'90: Preddy & Walker group takes over ownership from Leroy Co., secures liquor and gaming license.

'92: Moulin Rouge listed on National Register of Historic Places.

'97: Sold to Bart Maybie.

'03: May 29, Fire destroys the showroom & casino building.

'04: Moulin Rouge Development Corp. buys property.

'08: MRD Corp. files for bankruptcy.

'09: Olympic Coast Investment takes ownership; May 6, Fire destroys the front hotel wing; Sign donated and moved to Neon Museum; tower demolished in 2010.

'12: OCI files bankruptcy.

'17: Fire; last remains of MR and Mo'Mart Motel demolished.

Entertainment.

Tropi-Can-Can was the Moulin Rouge's debut revue, running seven weeks. Las Vegas resorts usually had two shows per evening, or a third late show on weekends. Tropi-Can-Can included a late show every night, 8 PM, 11 PM and 2 AM. The revue in May 1955 included Benny Carter orchestra, Stump and Stumpy, The Platters (Reed, Lynch, Williams, Robi, Taylor), Timmie Rogers, Margie McGlory, Teddy Hale, The Honey-Tones, Ann Weldon, Bob Bailey as master of ceremonies, and the dancers (numbering 20 to 27, sources vary) including Delcenia Boyd (16 years old), Norma Tolbert, Dee Dee Jasmin, Mary Louise Randolph, and Anna Bailey (28 y/o). The Platters recorded their hit version of "Only You" a month before the opening of Moulin Rouge, and the record was released summer '55.

Hot, Brown & Beige was the second show for three weeks, featuring Stump and Stumpy, singer Toni Harper, dancers Maurice and Gregory Hines (ages 11 and 9), vocal and dance group The Double-Daters, doo-wop group The Flamingos.

The Lionel Hampton International All-Star Revue ran for another three weeks.
