Short answer: No.

Slightly longer answer: It was... fine? I guess?

The story follows Raff and Penn, the scions of two noble houses, as they meet one night in the eponymous Hartswood. There's an immediate connection, so when Penn decides to flee his abusive father and unwanted betrothal, Raff offers to journey with him. The twist is that both men are hiding their identities - and Penn's betrothed is Raff's sister.

This book feels like it has all the ingredients for a fantastically fun, trope-filled read. Cuddling for warmth? Check! Mutual pining? Check! One character teaching the other to fight? Check! An angsty scar reveal (and subsequent comfort)? Check! The problem is… it did just feel like a checklist.

This gets to the heart of my problem with the book. It felt incredibly generic, from the characters to the setting to the plot. It didn't feel like the author cared that much about her story so, well, neither did I. For me, this was particularly noticeable with the setting. I love the mediaeval era and find it fascinating, but for a book nominally set in 1360 it didn't feel mediaeval at all. I can forgive the unusually progressive families as staple of historical romance, but I cannot forgive the lack of nuns.

Final verdict: One Night in Hartswood is readable but probably not worth your time.

His face is on the screen is greater and brighter than any monument. He meets the camera dead in the lens. Dead in their eyes. “I love you,” Klavier Gavin says, breathless. And in a crowd of a million, high up in a box with a shrieking Trucy at his side, Apollo feels his heart sink to the very bottom of his toes. Spirits help me.

it makes me physically ill. a Palestinian on twitter's last post was about burying their six-year-old cousin without his head. a Palestinian boy on youtube dreamt of 100k subscribers on his gaming channel. and yesterday he reached 500k, but he has been killed in the bombing of the gaza strip. the class of 2023-24 in Palestine has ended early because there are not enough students left alive. literal children who were the teachers, artists, doctors, scientists, scholars, writers, engineers of tomorrow.

when is it enough? statistics released by Palestinian officials about the numbers of martyred isn't enough. photographs and videos of fathers scurrying to piece together their children by gathering their body parts isn't enough. presscons surrounded by dead bodies beside a bombed hospital isn't enough.

yet, somehow, the narrative they are pushing is conflict between two faiths. it is absolutely not. this is no religious conflict. this is colonization, occupation, genocide. it's systematic oppression of Palestine and its people.

the word peace has never angered me as much as it has now. and it should anger you too. there can be no peace under violent oppression. there can be no peace after 75 years of ethnic cleansing. there can be no peace in occupied Palestine.

peace is the product of white supremacy, they prod and kill anyone other than them but when retaliation occurs, it is suddenly rabid savages, unjust savages...

Seeing more discourse around the 'Chose Not to Warn' (CNTW) archive warning on AO3 again and I feel the need to add a few extra points about it.

I won't rehash the long analyses people have given before: CNTW is a valid warning on its own merit (I have always interpreted it as 'could possibly contain any of the above' with regards to the other major warnings), and even if it for some reason were not, it is the default warning given by the archive. It's a warning on it's own. If you worry about triggers, don't read fics tagged with CNTW.

But, ignoring all of the valid points about author discretion as to tagging and warning, two more points came to mind when reading over some of the arguments about CNTW I've seen lately that I think need to be considered more.

First and foremost is the actual utility of tagging every trigger: you do not know what could possibly trigger every single reader, and more importantly, it is impossible to tag to full scope anyway. As we all know, AO3 implemented a 75-tag limit on new works posted after September of 2021. Sometimes, especially when a fic covers a wide scope of different content, not only is it hard to tag for every possible trigger, it sometimes also becomes impossible.

Secondly, the utility of tagging everything becomes even less possible when you're considering long fics. I don't mean fics of 100k or more. I'm talking 300-400k or more. Stories that contain so much content it again becomes impossible to tag everything. And what about when an author hasn't fully decided on plot points as they start posting? What if they change their mind and include scenes that are triggering, 80% of the way through a fic? Even if they do tag it, there will be detractors angry it wasn't posted from the start. It's certainly happened before.

I have a work that will easily surpass a million words at completion. I am hard-pressed to tag just all the major, overarching content and themes, much less tag every single trigger it might contain. There is not way for me to do such unless we want a repeat of Sexy Times with Wangxian. So, in case authors know their story might evolve to have content that upsets people, CNTW is a neat little option. "This might have stuff that will upset you. It might contain stuff from the other archive warnings". In what sense is that not a valid warning?

CNTW is not a 'rude' tag. It is not lazy or wrong or an incorrect way to tag or use AO3. Some of you just haven't read the TOS.

Writing Update (12/12/22)

Hello everyone! These past two weeks were pretty productive all-things considered. I managed to write 49k words, making Chapter 5 pt. 2 100k words in total.

I started working on Scene 7 these past two weeks and, as you can see, managed to get through it very quickly. I plan to finish Scene 7 in the next two weeks along with starting on Scene 6 (and possibly finishing it).

We're definitely on the other side of things regarding pt. 2-- that is to say, most of the work left to do is rather simple w/ the exception of Scene 2. I imagine that "50% Done" mark is going to up rather quick these next few weeks, and because of that, I'm more than confident on reaching the release window of January - March.

It's likely I'll put out another application for anyone who wishes to be an Alpha Reader either later this month or near the beginning of January, so keep an eye out for that. I'll be taking in quite a lot of readers-- more than usual-- as my hope is that I'll have enough readers to stay with me as the book goes into closed production and up until release of the completed First Book.

I'm getting very excited to wrap up this Chapter. Not only do I think it's a good conclusion to Act I (and the demo) of the game, but I'm incredibly eager to go and replay what's been written and just absolutely overhaul everything. I have so much planned to add and expand on, and the idea of re-releasing the Twine Demo with the complete vision of what I want the game to be...

Let's just say it's genuinely heartwarming to me.

Because I haven't updated my series in almost 3 years now I am worried the only person interested in seeing its completion is me, but I'm trying to bury that nagging little voice to still put here that I have about 10k new words in the doc (figured this was a great month to write, NaNo and all) and if I'm not 100k words of story-only, then I should be there in a week or so (this doc has a lot of notes).

I'm deep in the trenches of chapters that have maybe two bullet points of context and nothing else, so growing them has been interesting. But according to planned chapter count, I should be at 75% done probably by the weekend with the current pace I'm writing my first draft. And my current plan is to publish at 80% done and 50% beta'ed.

So uh, yeah. AU Fic 5 (aka Above the Shadows) could be coming quite soon. Crossing fingers.

Hermione took aim, blasting one apart with a quiet, “Diffindo,” and a whispered apology. “I’ll take care of the swans,” she said, glancing back at Draco. And the snake. “Are you okay?”

Both of Draco’s arms were raised. In one hand, he held his wand like a conductor’s baton. He held his other hand open, his palm facing the mass of corpses. White eyes, shining in the growing darkness like those of a nocturnal predator, stared unblinking at him. An Inferi army, swaying in the sunset, patiently awaiting orders.

“I’ve got it,” he said, though his voice was pitched high in uncertainty. “I’ll lead them down the path and meet you back here in a few minutes.”

“Sounds good,” she answered, silently demolishing another swan. “I have a snake to kill.”

hello anon 🥹 it's been a while since i had an anon in my inbox. thank you for asking this question, it's so lovely when people are interested/curious about my writing!

my current status is: stuck and simultaneously all over the shop lmao.

i have:

10 things i hate about you au (tarlos) - finished, but needs editing and idk how to look at it again because i'm feeling hateful towards it 😭 i promise it actually is finished, i have multiple people that can attest to it dkhfjsa i'm just paralysed by fear of it being lacklustre.

call me (with @rmd-writes) (tarlos) - i think we are about 75% through writing it, should be finished soon(ish). very excited about this one!

eurotrip (firstprince) - i am pushing 100k on this, likely to finish ch 9 of 18 tonight. will be intensely grateful to be halfway!

the ring-in 2.0 - not allowed to continue ch 1 until i finish ch 9 of eurotrip (self imposed rule) but hope to get ch 1 written by some point next week. the ring-in will only be 7 or 8 chapters (a similar length to the original), so it shouldn't take me forever to finish.
