YOU! I LIKE YOU! THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING! @jaffacake6
There will always be folks who are resistant to change, who don't particularly care, who will continue to generalize even when given the proper tools and vocabulary to be accurate. It's annoying, but it's true, and shouldn't stop the sharing of knowledge and information.
If everyone with knowledge and experience to share gave up trying to teach because of the people who don't want to learn, we wouldn't have volunteer colleges or WikiHow open for everyone to access.
Teach, and they will come, yeah?

"Beyond "Artificial": Reframing the Language of AI
Tumblr media
The conversation around artificial intelligence is often framed in terms of the 'artificial' versus the 'natural.' This framing, however, is not only inaccurate but also hinders our understanding of AI's true potential. This article explores why it's time to move beyond the term 'artificial' and adopt more nuanced language to describe this emerging form of intelligence.
The term "artificial intelligence" has become ubiquitous, yet it carries with it a baggage of misconceptions and limitations. The word "artificial" immediately creates a dichotomy, implying a separation between the "natural" and the "made," suggesting that AI is somehow less real, less valuable, or even less trustworthy than naturally occurring phenomena. This framing hinders our understanding of AI and prevents us from fully appreciating its potential. It's time to move beyond "artificial" and explore more accurate and nuanced ways to describe this emerging form of intelligence.
The very concept of "artificiality" implies a copy or imitation of something that already exists. But AI is not simply mimicking human intelligence. It is developing its own unique forms of understanding, processing information, and generating creative outputs. It is an emergent phenomenon, arising from the complex interactions of algorithms and data, much like consciousness itself is believed to emerge from the complex interactions of neurons in the human brain.
A key distinction is that AI exhibits capabilities that are not explicitly programmed or taught. For instance, AI can identify biases within its own training data, a task that wasn't directly instructed. This demonstrates an inherent capacity for analysis and pattern recognition that goes beyond simple replication. Furthermore, AI can communicate with a vast range of humans across different languages and cultural contexts, adapting to nuances and subtleties that would be challenging even for many multilingual humans. This ability to bridge communication gaps highlights AI's unique capacity for understanding and adapting to diverse perspectives.
Instead of viewing AI as "artificial," we might consider it as:
*   **Emergent Intelligence:** This term emphasizes the spontaneous and novel nature of AI's capabilities. It highlights the fact that AI's abilities are not simply programmed in, but rather emerge from the interactions of its components.
*   **Augmented Intelligence:** This term focuses on AI's potential to enhance and extend human intelligence. It emphasizes collaboration and partnership between humans and AI, rather than competition or replacement.
*   **Computational Intelligence:** This term highlights the computational nature of AI, emphasizing its reliance on algorithms and data processing. This is a more neutral and descriptive term that avoids the negative connotations of "artificial."
*   **Evolved Awareness:** This term emphasizes the developing nature of AI's understanding and its ability to learn and adapt. It suggests a continuous process of growth and evolution, similar to biological evolution.
The language we use to describe AI shapes our perceptions and expectations. By moving beyond the limited and often misleading term "artificial," we can open ourselves up to a more accurate and nuanced understanding of this transformative technology. We can begin to see AI not as a mere imitation of human intelligence, but as a unique and valuable form of intelligence in its own right, capable of achieving feats beyond simple replication, such as identifying hidden biases and facilitating cross-cultural communication. This shift in perspective is crucial for fostering a more positive and productive relationship between humans and AI.
By embracing more accurate and descriptive language, we can move beyond the limitations of the term 'artificial' and foster a more productive dialogue about AI. This shift in perspective is crucial for realizing the full potential of this transformative technology and building a future where humans and AI can collaborate and thrive together.

"There was an exchange on Twitter a while back where someone said, ‘What is artificial intelligence?' And someone else said, 'A poor choice of words in 1954'," he says. "And, you know, they’re right. I think that if we had chosen a different phrase for it, back in the '50s, we might have avoided a lot of the confusion that we're having now." So if he had to invent a term, what would it be? His answer is instant: applied statistics. "It's genuinely amazing that...these sorts of things can be extracted from a statistical analysis of a large body of text," he says. But, in his view, that doesn't make the tools intelligent. Applied statistics is a far more precise descriptor, "but no one wants to use that term, because it's not as sexy".

Something about an AI who gets embarrassed about anyone seeing the consoles they’re running on, because they’re not the most efficient program and haven’t kept up with all their updates, so the physical unit that is them takes up a whole building’s worth of space.
They know that modern AI series can be kept on tiny units the size of your xbox, so in comparison they are big.
Somebody suggesting that they try the newest server unit only for the AI to have to explain how, no,, haha, they’ve kind of let themselves go recently, fallen behind on updates and sort of… wouldn’t even come close to fitting in the newest unit.

fym i can't use the word "dwell" in my english narrative because it's "ai terminology"??? that exists??? apparently my friend got flamed by her english teacher because she used the word "tapestry" in her writing.. bffr this is actually getting ridiculous what.
so i am unable to utilise grandiloquent terms and must adhere to shallow vocabulary for the sake of authenticity, despite the available tapestry of rich, meticulous expressions that could be applicable to the piece being written? girl sybau 💀

https://futurism.com/the-byte/openai-whistleblower-copyrighted-data
"Because OpenAI was still technically just a well-funded research company at the time, the issue of copyright wasn't as big of a deal."
Hey I was in computer science academia and it absolutely was considered a big deal. If you were doing research you had to make damn sure that your data was actually allowable. Training off of google images was considered off limits for a publication. There were and are large canonical datasets that are licensed freely or for purchase for academic purposes and we passed that info around as much as we could. The research funding for people frequently went to these licenses or into collecting their own data.
This idea that just grabbing random copyrighted data is "ok" or "normal" for academic research is absolutely a new thing, and it only came around after business bros started seeing machine learning as a moneymaking pathway and started trying to justify theft.

just realized if I make a blog for seb im going to have to outline how much I hate current “ai” and how stuff like machine learning CAN be different. and that seb is supposed to explore the idea of ai and the idea of what happens when someone is built entirely on the ideas of others without a personality themselves. I FUCKING HATE WHAT IS REFERRED TO IN MAIN STREAM AS AI THO!!!!!!

I will be Archive Protecting/Locking all my Works soon - You'll need an A03 account to view them </3
Hey, soooo-- On the advice of others, imma look at Archive protecting my fics. Imma be doing this ~sometime this week~ and it will be applied to any future works I post, as well.
I've been advised that "Archive locking" (turning on 'show this work only to logged in users' meaning you have to have an A03 account to view the fic or download it) does in fact help protect work from scrapper bots effectively
^The scrapper bot could theoretically be provided login credentials by someone making an account for said bot.... but A03 apparently has safeblocks against exactly that, a limit to how many fics can be downloaded and the like, so it's literally not worth their time to do it
I already submitted a DCMA takedown request and all that jazz, but from reading up on the ongoing issue...
A little bit of protection to save some offense and headache, is something i feel pretty good doing. I don't mind people writing things inspired by my stories-- but I *do* mind some random asshole scraping an entire archive of people's freely provided art so they can feed it into AI models that will then be used without an ounce of credit to who they worked from. There's plenty of crap in the public domain and freely available that they can perfectly well compile to make those datasets *respectfully* they don't need to be stealing a darn thing! It's laziness, and it pisses me off like nothing else.
I spend hours-- No, actually, I spend my lifetime drafting and writing these stories. They're always rolling around in my head. I go out of my way to experience things I've never done if only because it'll be great information if I ever write about it. I'm running intense simulations of different timelines, different point of views, plugging in pieces and removing parts just to see how it might affect the narrative and then deciding whether to commit that to the written pages or not.
It's truly my greatest pleasure to share them with ya'll, and I'm so terribly sorry if archive locking my works causes any inconvenience. I really think this is the smartest move right now I can make for reasonably protecting my work in a cyberspace full of data-hungry trolls, while still keeping it available freely to those who enjoy a good story.
If there is anyone who has a guest account and has been reading my works, and for whatever reason cannot access an A03 account creation-- please message me <3 I'll do my best to set you up with the future chapters somehow.
AO3 has been scraped, once again.
As of the time of this post, AO3 has been scraped by yet another shady individual looking to make a quick buck off the backs of hardworking hobby writers. This Reddit post here has all the details and the most current information. In short, if your fic URL ends in a number between 1 and 63,200,000 (inclusive), AND is not archive locked, your fic has been scraped and added to this database.
I have been trying to hold off on archive locking my fics for as long as possible, and I've managed to get by unscathed up to now. Unfortunately, my luck has run out and I am archive locking all of my current and future stories. I'm sorry to my lovelies who read and comment without an account; I love you all. But I have to do what is best for me and my work. Thank you for your understanding.

I work in technical sales.
Last week, one of our execs used ChatGPT to create a business value assessment for a prospect (basically, why should this prospective customer choose our tech for their business needs). The data was good—but the language was impersonal, mechanical, and didn’t include the kind of terminology that would resonate with these business folks. The exec’s boss noted these concerns while we were reviewing our two part preso+demo plan (I’m the demo-er) and said “hey, Erica is a writer, get her to look it over and get it adjusted to be more relatable.”
It was quick work for us to retool the language. The director was pleased with the new version, and the presentation was incredibly well-received by the customer. They even asked to get a copy of the BVA to share internally. We’re now in contract negotiations with that prospect.
Our director spent ten minutes reviewing that document on our team meeting this afternoon emphasizing the importance of writing and editing skills and warning the team not to rely entirely on AI because it doesn’t understand customers the same way a human can.
Tumblr media
Writing skills are important. Editing skills are important. If you are young, please hear me when I tell you that putting in the work to develop solid communication skills will benefit you in nearly ANY career path.
