You can literally fold the pram and hold your child.
Those spots are there so we are safe and out of the way. So we are able to get emergency help if needed via the emergency assistance button. So we don’t slide down the middle of the train or slam into people if it comes to a sudden stop.
I can not just fold my chair and get out of it. I don’t have the privilege or ability to do that. It is not a pram parking spot, the symbol on the floor and walls is not of a pram, it’s of the universal symbol for people with disabilities.
Wild how people will still do this when there is literally a sign stating that you will be fined if you don’t give up the spot. If your baby has mobility, if you have mobility; your pram was literally made to be folded and compacted. Please DO IT when the train is full and people with mobility aids are forced into spots that aren’t safe.
Fuck you. I should not have to be unsafe so you don’t have to fold a pram and hold your child.

Have you guys noticed that trend in shortform content lately where people will say something in the video and then put something else in the subtitles for comedic effect? Yeah?
Fuck that.
I have an audio processing disorder and I need subtitles for accessibility reasons, so do hard of hearing and deaf people and anyone else who needs them.
They’re supposed to be an accurate representation of what’s being said in the video.
Say it with me folks.
Disabled people deserve the same experience of content as everyone else.

Hi lovely, I hope you are well?
I saw the ask about the bathroom accommodations and it got me really interested in two things.
1) what are accommodations that are hLepful (trying to 'help' without actually considering the needs of the individual, for example the step not enabling independence and I imagine from prior posts that it would also cause strain on your joints? (Plus the whole hygiene side, run into that one myself with suggested accommodations) )
2) what accommodations would you want to see in public spaces (doesn't have to be bathroom related, this just showed me a gap in my awareness and I'd like to work on it so I can include more awareness whenever I'm partaking in conversations around accessibility. If you have prior posts do link them, the only one that's coming to my mind right now was discussing the lack of accessibility in hospitals)
Hope you have a good pain/energy day, and I really love your style!
Hello! Indeed, I spoke about some ways to make public spaces more accessible for little people here - particularly when it comes to public washrooms. Here's some more accommodations I'd love to see!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would love to see more information/reception desks with varying heights! This is an excellent piece of infrastructure that allows little people (and wheelchair users) full access to the counter and a place to speak to an attendant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the realm of public counter tops - a huge point of inaccess for me is grocery store conveyor belts. They come to about my chest, which makes loading and packing very difficult. And the "accessible" lane is no different! Plus every grocery store I've been to makes the "accessible" lane also the express lane - so while I'm buying my load of groceries, there's always a disgruntled customer behind me - I've even been denied access for having too many groceries!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The self check out is even worse - in a world where we're now being ushered to interact with these robots instead of real people, I can't reach the screen or the debit machine! So either way I need to ask for help, which completely defeats it's purpose. I would love to see a more accessible option that is lower to the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A second, lower handrail on public stairs is a must! I've seen these in children's hospitals and schools, and would love them to be common place. Average handrails often land at shoulder height or higher - they provide little to no stability or safety for little people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An access issue that often gets overlooked is the height of public seating - this includes doctor's office chairs, modern theatre seating, bar stools, booths, and office swivel chairs. The irony of a disabled person not being able to sit down is one I come across on the regular. The number of times I've showed up for an interview and not been able to sit without assistance is absurd.
Having a variety of seating options, or providing public step stools (or a combination of the two) could be easy fixes to this issue. In hospitals I am seeing a slow shift towards even lower chairs and beds since this issue is not always unique to little people - anyone who has difficulty bending, sitting, or transferring from a wheelchair has this issue. Modern design needs to account for diversity, instead of steering towards minimalism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step stools are of course the easiest means of making public spaces more accessible for little people, but I want to point out that they're not always the be-all-end-all solution, and can actually just be a band aid to some problems. While stools are incredibly versatile, not everyone has the ability to use them and they can pose a hazard in certain situations. In points of high traffic, built-in steps are far safer and could even be designed to fold up when not in use - they can also account for weight and wear.
Additionally, when stools are option in public, it's vital that they be easily accessed and borrowed by patrons without the need for a special request. I've said it before, "If I have to ask for help, it's not accessible". In order for stools to be a viable accommodation, they should be as freely obtained as toilet paper.

Just because "accessibility" is given, doesn't mean it is good. Here is example.
So the other day since I was having a bad flareup we chose to use one of wheelchairs given by big store to look around instead of our cane.
These ones need person to push
Had very awful experience to be really honest
This was for few reasons
1: THE WHEELCHAIR ITSELF
The design of them makes so moving and being pushed RATTLES you. Left feeling nauseous after just a few minutes.
The brakes shake whole chair and body and are loud and hurt head
Design has almost no room for feet to sit and as someone who move lots and needs to sit certain ways to avoid pain, this was a huge problem as front small wheels would push into feet and either hurt or stop moving the wheelchair.
There other issues but can't form words to explain.
2: OTHER CUSTOMERS AND WORKERS
Other people were staring. Maybe because I'm young, and look it. But that made me feel AWFUL
Already had spent long time dithering over just using my cane instead of use wheelchair as felt like was somehow doing something wrong using a mobility aid I know need
Other people would also stand in way and not move, or would leave carts in way and leave no room to move past even when DID move
Store workers would look and talk to eachother specific about me (pointed to me while saying things) and gave strange looks. Apparently workers also ableist as all fuck
3: THE PERSON PUSHING ME
First want to say she is one of my closest friends. My best friend. She had no bad intention and was main person telling me to use wheelchair and advocate for self
But when pushing wheelchair, even if person CAN stand and walk unassisted, don't just leave them to look at something, even if is closeby.
She also hasnt got physical disabilities and doesn't know what like to be mobility aid user. I explained after but it was very clear she didn't understand that MY AUTONOMY IS GONE the second am in wheelchair that other person push with no means to maneuver self.

Can we PLEASE normalize explaining things multiple times??? And just accessibility in general?
We do virtual school, and have processing disorders. We cannot always understand verbal words despite hearing fine, so we use googles accessibility feature ‘live captions’, they weren’t working in class today so I was lost, I asked my teachers to re explain in chat box for me, but they wouldn’t. They either just said they’d press a few buttons to help (it doesn’t, I cannot understand them), or just ignored me straight up.
Can we.. not??? I have legitimately no idea what was going on, all of the text were in super bright colors (on the presentation) so it was hard to read.. plus she went by it so fast!
Please normalize being more accessible.

welcome to an installment of
🚍 bus drivers being lil shits 🚌
im an ambulatory wheelchair user, at the bus stop, another chair user wheeled up. we're getting the same bus, only one wheelchair user can be sitting in their chair on the bus at a time (which frankly is fucked up in its own right lol)
so i pre squish my chair so we can both get on (ive talked to the bus people and that is both perfectly legal and the recommended thing to do). and hes complaining about only one wheelchair being allowed. fairly standard. he only concedes After i tell him ibe literally talked to b&h buses XD
so we both get on the bus, everything is fine. except he then says, so nonchalantly, oh yeah can you lift it onto the luggage rack
?!?!?!?!?!?!
me, a 5ft scrawny looking emo kid, no visable disabilities, am being asked to lift my wheelchair, yknow, the thing that allows me to leave the house safely, onto the Luggage Rack?? that thing thats like half my height up, away from the seats, so i cant keep a good eye on it????
i fully just ignored him and carried on as usual. not a fucking chance
and to top it off, he fully refused to give me his name so i could tell the bus company about this (apparently they're NoT aLlOwEd To. suuuuure mate)

listen , if youre going to make posts including a lot of information about palestine , you have GOT to be making thorough and complete IDs for each image included . ive seen way too many posts about palestine where one out of like 3 total images has absolutely no description in alt text or otherwise . and usually its the one with the more comprehensive or in-depth information in the post
people who use screen readers deserve to know whats happening in palestine . they dont deserve to have their information on this cherry picked based solely on what the original poster couldnt be bothered to write out in text
i thought yall wanted as many people as possible to see and understand what's happening . but you cant be bothered to accommodate people who dont access the internet the same way you do

I didn’t think this had to be said but
If you are in a full grocery store with multiple children, do not give them the accessible shopping baskets to have fun with.
I need the baskets with wheels. I can’t use a cart and I sure as hell can’t use a basket I have to carry. It was right before dinner time so I knew the store would be busy with children but I walked in and there were two baskets with wheels left. And a parent with two young children gave them each one. If the store is empty or there are a lot of those baskets, go right ahead! Get your children involved! Let them learn! But in a busy store with no baskets available, those are not toys for your children. Those can be the difference between whether I can eat dinner tonight or not. Let them take turns pushing your cart or get them involved in some other part of the shopping.
In the end it was fine today and I was able to find another one someone dropped off at a checkout but that’s not always the case. I have had to go without groceries for a couple days in the past because I went there, couldn’t find a basket, and then had a flare up from the trip and couldn’t go back for a few days.

I hate it when people who make subtitles do annoying shit like the font size can't be changed, or when the subtitles aren't fully accurate to what's being said. Like when words, phrases, or even whole sentences are cut out for no reason.
Don't get me started on the YouTube subtitles, either.
I also hate it when there's no punctuation in a message or a post. Like bitch, I can't fucking read what you're saying...

[ Image ID: A light brown cat with darker stripes and spots in a car. He has both right paws on the shoulder of the person taking the photo. His back left paw is on the seat of the car and his left front paw is out of frame against the window of the car door.
