Nesta Vs ACOSF, a rambling rant

TW: mentions of sexual assault and abuse

Besides the "love" story that read like a quiet descent into domestic horror, ACOSF has one element that keeps me from being able to pick it up even just to sift through for Nesta gems: sex.

Here me out, I'm not a prude and I think we could have gotten a smutty romance but...

At her core, Nesta has always been a proud and modest person.

To be clear, with pride, I mean that her sense of self - her famous steel spine - has kept her together and unbroken even during harrowing circumstances. It's vital to her. It's so ingrained in her that - given we have no other explanation - we can assume it's what shields her mind from literal magic. However, like any trait, her pride can also be a thing that comes off as negative in the wrong situations.

With modesty, she was raised to keep a certain ideology that based her value on sex, beauty, marriage etc but it's important to understand that Nesta applied those standards inwards, at herself. (Eg In acotar, she brings up Feyre and Isaac in defence of her and Tomas, in acomaf, she is mostly upset about not hearing from Feyre or being notified that Feyre has switched courts - not about Feyre sleeping with Tamlin and then Rhys)

Now, I don't think Nesta's modesty makes her better than Feyre, in fact I was happy to get the representation of two different types of views on sex

But what I didn't consider at the time was that SJM was painting this out to be a negative trait.

In retrospect it seems obvious even though Nesta has defied her narrative destiny and become a sort of icon, at the end of the day she was still supposed to be written in a negative contrast to Feyre.

It seems funny but imagine you consumed the book the way Sarah intended, the way so many in the fandom have. The old Sarah Says rule, for my long time mutuals.

For example:

The dinner in acomaf - it's obvious Nesta is upset that she hasn't heard from Feyre only to have her come through not only as a whole Fae but bringing others and endangering their entire family.

But imagine it as a one dimensional reading and suddenly the "I fuck" dialogue is a girlboss moment of feminism giving a fuck you to the strict patriarchy of the "mortal lands" let's ignore how the Fae are actually more patriarchal and the Illyrians even more so than that

So understand that Nesta's modesty is being directly contrasted with Feyre's sexual freedom. The reader - at least from sjm's perspective - is supposed to agree with Feyre and disagree with Nesta in a sort of win/lose, yes/no, black/white dichotomy.

And because sjm is consistent and boring and a self-inset author, this dynamic doesn't change even when the protagonist does.

Only now sjm and her feminism has changed from fuck-whoever-I-want girlboss to kinky-but-only-with-my-husband tradwife

So Nesta can't be prudish and cut off because 1) it's not as conducive to the breakdown of self and buildup of a dependent and abusive relationship and 2) it's not in direct contrast with Feyre's current monogamous, traditional family values character.

So Nesta starts drinking and sleeping around and it's not because we're going to explore the unraveling of the pride and modesty at the core of the character as part of her transformation or as a result of her trauma

But because it's supposed to be a bad look, degrading, it shows she's failed, it makes her a loser

All of that is already insane. And even more so when taken with the context of her assault by Tomas and the sex centred relationship she has with Cassian

Now add to that the fact that in the book, Nesta is an object of desire for 2 villains and undergoes assault and drowning AGAIN

Sjm literally gives less than 2 fucks about SA, that much is obvious even from the way she inflicts and then disregards the experience of both Feyre and Rhysand respectively. It's a tool for her, a quirky story element

But to have Nesta experience such a similar thing - especially when the experience of being Made can be read as a sort of rape allegory on its own - and all for the sake of "romance" fantasy??

Even Nesta's reading habits are sexualised, to be clear I don't think there's anything wrong with reading smut, but the scope of her intellect and reading is narrowed down when we're suddenly made to believe most of the books she reads are smut.

This is someone who likely taught herself economics and investment within months in order to not just pay off the debt, upgrade her whole family's way of life but also rebuild the family fortune. Someone who, having stopped schooling at around 14/15, did the math needed to calculate the feasibility of the evacuation of a small country.

Someone who's verbally stated life goal was to see what a woman could make of herself in the world.

Even her love of reading is used as a stepping stone for how horny she is, instead of it being a result of her deeply ingrained need for escapism

She reads smut because the only thing she has in common with Cassian and the IC is sex. Because sjm thought one of the core elements of a friendship between 2 SA survivors and a disabled woman from a culture that mutilated her for being born a woman would be their desire to fantasise about men.

All the while the male love interest treats her like garbage.

We could have had a smutty book filled with sex where each scene could have been the growth of Nesta's trust and love of Cassian through intimacy. It could have been a sexual relationship that involved and explored kink - which explored vulnerability and the negative impact of how Nesta's pride became a source of stress and strain.

It could have been an exploration about the complicated relationship with desire and oppressors that many survivors have. But it isn't.

It's hahaha horny, so RELATABLE

Even when it comes to the abusive situation Nesta grew up in, it's just hung up like decoration on the character. Not explored, let alone healed. I don't wanna hear that sjm explained or explored Nesta's abuse when we don't even get her mother or her grandmother's names

We don't get

The complexity of being a trapped and abused woman who came from a trapped and abused woman who came from a trapped and abused woman

Or the complexity of a dysfunctional family

Or even the journey of recovery from addiction and self-harming behaviour

Now, not every aspect of Nesta or any survivors lives have to boil down to how it relates to their experiences but SJM is praised for her "recovery" and so much of this book is about sex and abuse but has no depth

It could have been a less-deep, fun experience of sex and desire and kink. But no

Nesta has sex with many faceless men because sjm is condemning her as a failure. Sex is her punishment, it makes her dirty and unworthy and cheap.

Then, through her "healing", she becomes a sex doll for the right guy. Sex is her reward, it makes her hot and useful and appealing.

Sjm writes not just like a man but like a particularly talented misogynist so it's the way sex is used that really puts me off

Edit: ultimately I think the sex and romance should have interacted with and evolved her pride, modesty and past experiences, rather than those things being demolished to turn her into a sex doll

here is the first chapter of my phantom blot x lily fic. it's a dark hero x villain romance that touches on both of their abuse and the effects of it, just in case that might be a sensitive subject for you(specifically touches on domestic abuse and child abuse).

some other notes:

this is set in my own take on the mickey mouse universe, but is mostly inspired by the comics, hence the use of comic characters, mickey as a detective and the cities like mouseton and duckburg. donald has his own separate set of comics set in duckburg so sadly he and daisy are just mentioned.

phantom blot himself is a character that mostly appears in the comics, but has some animated appearances, nothing all that accurate though. so if you are interested in him, you can easily find the comics online.

my versions of the characters lean into their animal types, so there's things like the dog characters have fangs(except for goofy), claws, dog abilities like enhanced smell and canine instincts.

here's the story itself

Lily drove through the streets of Mouseton, a map placed in front of her as she made her way to her new home. Just a few days ago, she had been in Duckburg, and now she was here in its neighboring city, ready to start a new life.

Lily had left in the first place because of her ex boyfriend Cody and ex friends Madison and Olivia. Everything had gone well at first, with them bonding over their shared interest in art, but it soon fell apart. They began to find Lily boring because she wasn't interested in partying, drinking, any of that stuff. Lily was the type that preferred to snuggle up with a good book, and was more of an introvert. Cody, Madison and Olivia began to pressure and force Lily into doing what they wanted, making her feel humiliated, they would laugh at her and mock her, and Cody started openly berating her. She began to feel he was only into her because of her looks, and she had caught him flirting with other women..she knew he likely cheated on her too.

The breaking point for her was when they had got into an argument one night, he was angry at her for standing up for herself and smacked her on the cheek, hard enough that she fell onto the floor and began to cry. Lily had struggled being in the relationship, blaming herself for her treatment and feeling the good moments were worth staying for, but the relationship escalating from purely emotional abuse to physical abuse was too much. She couldn't stay, it made her realize she had to leave. But Lily was too afraid to confront him, so did it over text, being met with a furious text in response. It scared her, but she also felt relieved.

She couldn't stay in Duckburg anymore, not when it meant Cody was around. Lily feared he would come after her and harm her again, she couldn't risk that, so she purchased a house in Mouseton, and headed over to it.

The city was all hustle and bustle, vehicles on the move, hordes of people walking around, chatter in the air and an overall busy atmosphere. Despite Lily's more shy and introverted personality, she wasn't bothered. Duckburg was a big economic hub, home to multiple businesses owned by the richest ducks in the world: Scrooge McDuck, Flintheart Glomgold and John D. Rockerduck. So she was used to it all.

Lily made her way to the street she now lived on, called “Toon Street”. The houses were very cute and colourful, and she felt at home seeing multiple houses with gardens at the front, with her own love of gardening. The houses all had white picket fences, there were blue streetlights dotting the street and a brick road right down the middle.

Once she entered her own house, she looked around. She loved the cozy two story house she bought, the atmosphere was warm and comfortable, it was exactly what she needed. Nearby the front door was a thick wooden coat hanger and a closet, the flooring was a warm brown wood, the walls were white and in front of the door was a wine red carpet. Lily put her things down and stepped into the living room, which had a white couch with a matching armchair, a dark brown coffee table and matching side tables and a cabinet with a flat-screen TV on top.

She hadn't brought much with her, in Duckburg she had been living with her parents until she lived in the dorms of the college she attended. Pretty much everything she had with her were things from her childhood home. Lily hadn't wanted to bring much anyway, this was moving onto a new life, in a new city with new people around. This was a fresh start.

As she unpacked her things, she heard a knock at the door. Lily opened it to find a familiar face: Mickey Mouse.

“Mickey Mouse? The..famous detective?” She was taken aback and felt shy.

“That's me! I heard we had someone new moving into this street, so I decided to find out who it was,” He grinned.

Lily smiled a little, “My name is Lily..I moved here from Duckburg.”

“Duckburg? That's where my buddies Donald Duck and Daisy Duck live, I'm sure you've heard of them.”

“I have..and all their antics with Scrooge McDuck..”

Mickey could tell she was shy, and decided he wanted to make her feel more relaxed, “Say, why don't my buddies and I throw a party to welcome you to the neighborhood?”

“Oh I don't do parties..” She frowned.

“Don't worry, it'll be small, it'll just be you, me, my girlfriend Minnie, my brother Oswald and my friends Goofy, Ortensia, Horace and Clarabelle,” He assured her.

“Well..” Lily thought about it, she wasn't sure if she could trust them, even with Mickey's reputation as a skilled detective that fought against the criminals of Mouseton. But she thought it would be rude to turn him down, and having new friends might make her feel better..plus the party was small and not like the big ones Cody, Madison and Olivia made her go to, “Okay, you can throw the party.”

“Great! I'll tell everyone, we can set it up at my place if that will make you more comfortable,” He suggested, figuring she might not want multiple people at her house already.

“Sure,” She agreed.

“I'll organize everything and tell you when it'll be, see you then!” Then Mickey was on his way, waving goodbye.

Lily waved back. She still was hesitant, but at least hoped everything would go smoothly.

She finished unpacking and looked around, seeing everything all together made her feel better, and she thought about really customizing the place and buying some new furniture, she'd just have to ask Mickey where the furniture and paint stores were. Lily noted that the place still felt empty, like she had put some things in the cabinet, but it didn't have much in it regardless. But that was okay, she could really make the house a home.

Then, she sat down and read a book she brought, her mind wandering to the party and hoping Mickey and his friends were trustworthy.

The day of the party arrived, and Lily headed over to Mickey’s place, not sure what to expect. When she opened the door, he greeted her with a smile, “Here's the guest of honour herself, come right in, Minnie made cookies.”

Lily walked inside, and felt relieved, he was right, there weren't many people and the atmosphere was very relaxed and fun. There was only a little bit of chatter, and he had a cute, cozy house. The walls were a creamy white with wood paneling, the stairs and floor were wooden and additionally the stairs had a green and purple carpet over top of it. In the living room where the guests had gathered, she could see a flat screen TV attached to one of the walls, a fireplace, two red couches, a wooden coffee table covered with food and drink and a dog bed with the name “Pluto” at the bottom. The house in general was covered in framed pictures of Mickey's friends, or him with them. She could tell how much he cared about them. When she stepped closer into the living room, she noted that he was playing a comedy movie too.

Minnie beamed as she brought a plate of chocolate chip cookies over, “Lily was it? I'm Minnie, I made chocolate chip cookies since I figured you'd probably like them, everyone does.”

Lily nodded and took one, the taste was warm and soft, and it made her smile, “Oh it's delicious, thank you.”

“No problem, do you also like fashion? I run a boutique in town and am looking for employees, since you're new and need a job after all,” Minnie offered.

“I do, that would be wonderful Minnie, thank you.”

“No need to thank me twice, we're friends now aren't we?”

“Friends..” Lily was surprised Minnie already considered her a friend, “That sounds..good..”

Much to her surprise, Clarabelle suddenly ran over, “It's great to meet you Lily! You simply must know about all the gossip and ongoing in town, plus I run a general store called Moo Mart. Visit me anytime to buy whatever you need..and hear the latest gossip!” Clarabelle took Lily's hand and ran over to the couch with her, blabbering on about gossip.

Lily was surprised and a bit overwhelmed, but she was glad Clarabelle so willingly accepted her. Next to her sat her boyfriend Horace, who also started talking his head off about whatever.

Minnie pulled Lily away, “That's enough you two, she looks overwhelmed.”

“I'm just so excited! You know I'm always happy to make new friends..meet new people..” Clarabelle replied.

“Just try to calm down, okay?”

“Okay fine…”

Next, Goofy walked over to her, “It's..Lillian right?”

“Lily,” She corrected.

“Lily! Yes! Don't look so shy, we're all friends here, why don't I tell you some jokes?”

“Well..alright..”

Everyone watched as Goofy sat down and told a bunch of jokes, he always made his friends laugh, but what really got everyone laughing was when Goofy accidentally slipped on a banana peel and fell, he grinned, “I'm just a natural at slapstick aren't I?”

The cheery atmosphere helped Lily feel better. She was surrounded by people who saw her as a friend, she still was hesitant to trust them, always feeling at the back of her mind it could all be fake, but she felt she had to take a chance on them.

Afterwards, Goofy looked at her, “I perform every Sunday at the Goofs and Gags Club, come there if you wanna see more!”

She nodded, and next met up with Oswald and Ortensia.

“I'm Ortensia, and this is my husband Oswald, it's really nice to meet you.”

“It's nice to meet you too..” Now she was feeling shy again, Oswald was an actor and she was a bit starstruck seeing him.

He noticed and chuckled, “No need to be shy, any friend of Mickey's is a friend of mine.”

Ortensia decided to help her relax further, “Do you like gardening?”

Lily perked up, “I do, I love flowers and nature in general, and I love to just take walks outdoors.”

“Wonderful!” Ortensia grinned, “If you want, I can help you work on a garden outside your house.”

“That would be great, thank you.”

After speaking to everyone, Mickey walked over to her, “How are you feeling?”

“Good, I'm surprised but..glad..everyone sees me as a friend already.”

“Why wouldn't we? You've already shown yourself to be kind, and you're new here! You deserve to have friends, everyone does.”

Lily couldn't help but tear up at that, making Mickey worry, “Oh no! Did I say something wrong?”

She wiped her tears away, “No it's just..I..I don't want to get into but my friends back in Duckburg weren't real friends. It's just..nice to have people already seeing me as a friend.”

“Well whatever happened, it's not your fault,” He assured her, “We'll be real, true friends to you.”

She smiled, “Thank you.”

“By the way, if you ever need any help, come stop by my detective agency, it's right over on Iwerks Lane.”

That reminded her of what she wanted to ask him, “Thank you, and oh! Yes..do you know where the furniture store and paint store is? I was thinking of adding my own personal touches to my house.”

“No problem! The furniture store is also on Iwerks Lane, and the ink and paint store is on Babbitt Road,” He replied, “If you need any mechanical work done, just ask Horace! His mechanic shop is on Colvig Street.”

She was thankful to have such kind, helpful friends. It was such a big change from her old ones, and she appreciated it more than words could say. But at the back of her mind, she worried that her new friends would stop liking her, that they'd turn on her just like Madison and Olivia did, there had to be a reason they did right? Lily felt it was her fault, she must've done something wrong or had this flaw that made them turn on her, and because of that, it might be only a matter of time before her new friends turn on her too. She hated thinking that way, but she couldn't shake all those awful feelings.

Later on, Lily returned home. The party went better than she expected, and she was grateful for it. She hadn't messed things up like she thought she would.

After changing into her pajamas and slipping into bed, her mind wandered. Minnie and Mickey..Horace and Clarabelle..Oswald and Ortensia..all her friends but Goofy were in these happy, loving relationships. She felt jealous, she wanted a happy, loving relationship too, Lily wanted a man that loved her for her, she hoped she would find that man, one day, and that he was somewhere in Mouseton, waiting for her.

Over in his mansion, in a dark room, the Phantom Blot was plotting, working on another scheme of his. Normally he'd be in one of his hideouts, but he was eager to start testing and perfecting his invention, so decided to sneak in a bit of work for the night before moving his operations over to one of his hideouts.

He had big plans, plans to start with taking over Mouseton, then, the world. Phantom Blot had started developing an inky substance that had the ability to change the body parts it was applied to, allowing them to be manipulated as desired. In addition, he was working on different robots and a mech, all for his grand plans. He couldn't wait to see them fulfilled.

As he tested the ink-like substance on his arm, it didn't work as well as he hoped, just changing a finger into a little hammer. But he wanted more, he wanted his whole hand to be able to morph, and decided to go to the ink and paint store in disguise the next day to buy more ink to help, hoping it could increase the strength of the substance.

There was then a knock at the door and he put everything away before going to open it, where he was greeted by his young daughter, Phantom Brat.

“Daddy! Come on out and play with me!” She giggled.

He smiled at that, “Alright.”

She took his hand and dragged him to her room, “I wanna play a game where I'm the princess and you're the evil dragon trying to kidnap me.”

Phantom Blot laughed, “Aw you want me to be the bad guy?”

“Yes! I need a bad guy to fight off after all!” Brat grinned.

“Alright then, here I come!” He laughed again as he playfully grabbed her. Phantom Brat retaliated by biting his arm with her little fangs lightly.

“Bad dragon! You won't take me away!”

Phantom Brat had a lot of energy, the result of her being a puppy, and previously she tended to bite a lot, especially when she was teething. Phantom Blot had to teach her when it was appropriate to bite, and now was such a time, she was happily engaging in a little bit of play fighting with him.

“Argh! You got me!” He let go and laid on his back, faking looking defeated.

“Yes! I got you, bad dragon!” She grinned and her tail wagged excitedly.

Phantom Blot noticed it was getting dark out and checked the time on his phone, it was about 8:30pm, so he stood back up, “Alright Phantom Brat, it's time for bed.”

“But Daddy!” She protested.

“No buts, it's getting dark out and energetic little pups like you need their rest,” He replied.

She sighed, defeated, “Fine..”

After changing her into her pajamas, he helped her into bed, when she suddenly looked solemn. Phantom Blot noticed and became worried, “What's wrong sweetie?”

Phantom Brat looked down for a moment, “Can I have a mommy?”

That question took him by surprise, “What?”

“I've been reading all these books and watching all these movies and shows with mommies in them..I want a mommy too,” She admitted.

Phantom Blot didn't know how to respond. Brat's biological mother was a woman he had a simple fling with, then one day, she arrived at his mansion with Phantom Brat in her arms, ranting to him about being impregnated by a villain and her regrets about their fling while poor baby Brat sobbed. Apparently all her mother could see when she looked at Brat was Phantom Blot and she hated it, unable to stand taking care of her any more. After the mother dumped Phantom Brat onto him, neither of them ever saw her again.

He had never tried looking for a mother since, he was a villain, dating was complicated. But he knew children thrive better with both parents around over being raised by a single parent, and well he did only want the best for her. Phantom Blot thought that the ideal mother for Phantom Brat would be someone normal, as he believed it would help give her a more stable upbringing than if he dated another villain. He didn't know if he'd ever find a mother for her, but he didn't want to let her down.

“Don't worry, I'll find you a mommy someday okay?” He assured her, before leaning in and kissing her forehead.

Phantom Brat smiled at that, and held closely onto a stuffed teddy bear with a black hood covering its head as she fell asleep.

He smiled back and made his way to her doorway, turning the light off before closing the door behind him. Phantom Blot sighed, he hoped he wouldn't let Brat down and could indeed find her the mother she longed for.

The next day, Lily made her way to a bank, specifically going to Whiskers Bank at the recommendation of Ortensia, since her father, J.P. Whiskers, was the owner. Since she planned a day of shopping, she needed to set up her account at the bank and take out money from it. After doing so, she made her way to the ink and paint store. She liked her house, but really wanted to customize it, to make it truly feel like her home, and figured painting the walls and some furniture would help with that.

Lily scanned through the aisles, it was overall quiet in the store, not many people were around. She picked up a few paint cans and wandered around, looking for more until she walked through one of the ones with ink and accidentally bumped into another person.

“Oh no! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, it's my fault I-”

The person she bumped into looked over at her, “No need to apologize, it's fine.”

He was dressed in all black, with short slicked back black hair, sideburns, a widow's peak and was wearing a mask that covered most of his face. Lily couldn't help but feel intrigued by the mask with its black colouring and thick white smile, but felt it might be rude to say something. She was also immediately taken by his voice, it was naturally sultry and seductive, she couldn't help but enjoy it. It sounded oddly familiar too.

Unbeknownst to her, it was the Phantom Blot. Usually he would be stealing what he wanted, but right now he preferred to lay low, waiting until the right time to reveal himself.

And right now, he was faced with the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. Long blonde hair with thick curls, a cute oval-shaped nose, floppy ears and she was wearing the most adorable outfit: a flower in her hair, a pink and white pinafore dress with flowers and frills, white gloves, green Mary Janes and long white socks. She also seemed nice enough, albeit overly apologetic.

“What's your name?” He asked.

“Lily..”

“How fitting, a beautiful flower for a beautiful woman.”

She couldn't help but blush at that, “You think I'm beautiful?”

“Of course, why wouldn't I?” He asked and gave her a flirty wink, making her blush deepen.

“I just..um..” Lily didn't want to burden him with her problems so changed the subject, “What are you getting ink and/or paint here for? I just moved here so..I want to customize my house through painting the walls and furniture…maybe some other stuff too?”

Ah, she just moved to Mouseton, that explains why he hadn't seen her before, “I'm getting some ink, it's for a little project I'm working on. Maybe I'll show it to you, if you want.”

“That would be great,” She smiled, “Are you working on some kind of art project?”

Phantom Blot paused, “You could say that.”

“I like art too..I draw sometimes, usually nature sketches,” Lily twiddled her thumbs together in her nervousness.

He looked intrigued at that, “You do? I enjoy painting, you should see how easily I can replicate different art styles.”

“I..would love to,” She perked up a little, her ears twitched and her thumbs stayed in place.

He was starting to wonder if she might be a kindred spirit, she was beautiful sure, but the fact she shared his interest in art? That's what really got him intrigued.

“How about I get your number? We could be friends, if you want,” He offered.

Lily went shy again, she didn't want to mess things up with him too, “You want to be friends?”

“Of course, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to be friends with a beautiful, creative woman like yourself.”

He was such a flirt, Lily didn't know how to handle it, but she was flattered by his attention. How long will it last though, she wondered.

“Well..okay..” She agreed.

They exchanged numbers and went their separate ways. Lily looked down at the new number she saved. He hadn't given her his name, so she saved him as “Nice Goth Guy” in her phone, with a ghost emoji next to it. She bought some paints and left the store. Lily wasn't done shopping for the day, so headed out to buy more things, getting some cute little trinkets, flowers and decorations.

Once she returned home, she unpacked her things, finding places for the new stuff she bought and placing the paints away for later. Lily sat down on the couch in her living room, laying her head back on one of the cushions to relax.

It was quiet as Lily sat alone with just her thoughts, and drummed her fingers on the cushion next to her. She found herself thinking of everything that had been happening to her as of late. Lily had made all these new friends, but she was unsure if any of them would last. She wanted to hold onto these friendships as long as she could, and wondered what would happen next.

Despite the happiness she felt, at the back of her mind, Lily feared Cody would find her. She had tried escaping, tried to move on, but he had threatened her before, he was not above threatening her again. Thinking about him made Lily feel tense, she scrunched her face, her hands began to sweat and her claws poked out from the tips of her fingers, scratching against the cushion.

She took a deep breath, she needed to relax, find a way to take her mind off things. Just preorderd Menewood, by Nicola Griffith, the sequel to Hild. I loved Hild! Read it years ago, but there are some passages that still stick in my mind - when little Hild has to cross the hall, carrying that chalice, when she first hears the Christian choir the King's new wife brought with her sing in the new church.

I'm assuming the protagonist will fully embrace Christianity in the sequel, and it will be interesting to see how that will be framed. A merely political, opportunistic choice? If you can't beat them, join them? Hild's portrayed as a cunning character, who can be be quite pragmatic, so probably. Still, my sense is that Christianity isn't getting quite the (cartoon) villain edit it's often getting in current (feminist, but not just feminist) retellings of myths set in this period of transition, where it's generally portrayed as the harbringer of patriarchy, centralisation/imperialism and authoritarianism, ending a golden age of matriarchal wisdom and freedom in perfect harmony with nature.

Don't get me wrong, of course Christianity deserves all the villain edits you care to present, as it does generally serve to promote patriarchy, etc. I don't see Nicola Griffith glossing over those aspects. But I like a bit of ambiguity, and a bit less of an idealisation of the pagan past. I can't entirely buy into of accounts of European Christianisation as an exclusively top-down-affair; in order to take over as successfully as it did, there had to be aspects genuinely attractive to the downtrodden, the common people; Nietzsche didn't call it slave morality for nothing.

For what it's worth, I definetly soured on any retelling leaning too hard on the "free, joyful, life-affirming pagans vs obedient, repressed, death-cult Christians"-angle when I heard it pushed by my most right-wing aquaintances as the true story of the Nibelungs, upstanding domestic Germanic nobility crushed by the underhanded plotting of snivelling, jumped-up Judeo-Christian globalists. It's interesting how Christian suddenly becomes Judeo-Christian in such a context (these people are definitely not about "ex oriente lux") and how the Nazis suddenly have a problem with patriarchy when they are blaming it on the Jews.

I've always been quite fascinated by Norse myth, Arthuriana, sure, also the Nibelungs (the most dispiriting national epos you could come up with). Even as a kid, I could tell that the Christianity in these stories only was a later addition, a thin veneer, papering over an alternative, older value system (honor! loyality! might makes right! live by the sword, die by the sword), and that that older value system was definitely it's own type of bullshit too.

Just saying, there are lot of interesting tensions here, and I'm excited to see how Nicola Griffith is going to spin them.

there's a limit on how much you can be an isekai intellectual...

a bunch of analyses have been popping up before me all day so i wanted to throw my hat into the ring. all love to ppl who are exercising their creative minds + ppl like geoff here who just talk about these things because of fan interest but i feel like there reaches a point where exploring the "types" of isekai is pointless? i've seen ppl list out the different types of villainess revenge isekai or fantasy mmorpg isekai but eh why fit them all into separate boxes like that?

i think it's easier to think of isekai as a "type" (genre) of itself with only two categories: 1) a focus on isekai (lit. another world) 2) tensei (lit. to be reborn). this allows for a variety of applications and thus tropes that ppl see so many trends of!

with isekai - in another world

you see everything from:

pure fantasy (inuyasha, digimon wait maybe not the best example but in my childhood mind i count digimon as pure fantasy, fushigi yugi)

mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (.hack//legend of twilight, sao ugh, log horizon, overlord (LOVE OVERLORD!)

otome game-esque worlds >>> this is where it gets complicated with "villainess routes" since i admit there are multiple villainess tropes but this is why it's nice to not think of this as a "sub-type/genre" bc it frees you from those complications! (the saint's magic power is omnipotent, the white cat's revenge as plotted from the dragon king's lap soso cute!, the savior's book cafe in another world, i'm a villainous daughter so i'm going to keep the last boss wait i can't remember if she's reborn in this one lmaooo see this is why rules make everything hard)

with tensei storylines - being reincarnated/reborn in another world as *insert character/role*

pure fantasy (a returner's magic should be special, reminiscence adonis, the lady and the beast, light and shadow, i can't think of a manga off the top of my head for this ah)

mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (so i'm a spider so what i stan kumoko so hard, her majesty's swarm, can't name another off the top of my head ah i hate lists shorter than two things...)

self-insert based games/novels (fiance's observation log of a self-proclaimed villainess, who made me a princess, death is the only ending for the villainess, the villainess wants to marry a commoner, honestly games vs novels are different applications but i'm not in the headspace to try to remember a bunch of both lol)

*insert line break to give random ppl a break from scrolling but tl; dr just enjoy things for what they are no need to micro analyze*

similar variations occur in both genres (if ppl want to be super technical i guess i'm arguing that isekai itself is a massive genre that has the "another world" subgenre and "reincarnation" subgenre tl; dr) so i think it's honestly a huge pain to try to separate all these trends into so many different types of stories. for me personally it's easier to not get overwhelmed by this gigantic umbrella of "isekai" that spans light novels, manhwa, manga, and mobile games by just stripping each story down into its trademark tropes (aka character archetypes, story structures) and slapping "oh this is a person going to a world that's not ours" and "this person gets reborn as blank in another world". none of this "omg this power fantasy is such a this kind of isekai moment" or "there are 14 different types of villainess revenge stories and this series fits into this" bc AH labels! limitations! circle-jerks via ppl trying to compartmentalize everything and sound smart for leaving a comment on story analysis instead of ooh-ahhing over a character's face! dividing things into light novel manga vs manga vs korean manhwa ft. female characters!

the last bit is mainly why i feel frustrated by ppl's insistence to group everything?

the video linked at the beginning of the post (honestly good video essay, i enjoyed it, i just kept thinking in my head the whole time "marimo these are tropes do not take the genre talk literally") has a baby comment thread talking about "korean isekai manhwas" as a genre featuring nothing but reincarnated villainess' and i can't.

like i cannot acknowledge that as a genre of any sort. the energy i felt reading through some of those insights takes me back to 2012 when all yt americans discovered k-pop and deemed all korean music k-pop from then on! (ppl still do this now, yes you are seen and don't talk to me pls i don't like you. k-pop is korean pop music and nothing less and nothing more. take a few seconds and try to parse apart aspects of korean culture instead of slamming everything into a monolithic label that has the letter k and a hyphen.) it feels so odd to see a bunch of young ppl on ig and tiktok acknowledge korean media that happens to be in the form of a webtoon as "oh stories all about young girls becoming villains in stories they made/played" bc it feels so reductive u.u

(positionality disclaimer that i'm praying isn't actually necessary: i am a 3rd-generation korean of japanese descent do not fite me i am exhausted irl of ppl asking for validation/verification bc massive shove off.)

breaking news! korean manhwa...is just as multifaceted as japanese manga...bc how can comics as an art-form not have multiple genres...huh such a shocker?!?! same likely applies to media in other parts of the world like chinese manhwa and french comics--not my place to explain either of those i just know those industries exist bc of wakfu and donghua shows by Tencent.

at the end of the day it's not like analyzing any kind of isekai is wrong--absolutely not!! i think it can be super fun to think about how isekai elements complicate a story (MCs trying to go back home, ppl from the og world, reincarnation plot-twists) or maybe even bash a series for including some kind of other world element when they could have just written a super fun fantasy.

insert marimo's brief ramble that hey you can get sick of truck-kun's hitting disillusioned guys who happen to be super duper smart or girls who happen to be master chefs/craftsmen but transporting a fully-grown being into a fantasy setting is the ultimate cheat code for making mundane modern technology seem cool and overpowered, and being reincarnated as a fully grown person in a world with a pre-made story/game set-up completely bypasses the need for an author to slowly flesh out world-building in a natural progression so isekai is actually a really smart writing tool it's just that there are some series where the author didn't use it well at all and it's cheesy or clearly isekai was misused as a vehicle for character/story development and it was pointless *DEEP BREATH OUT*

in this essay i will argue...lol i am such a culture studies major!! if i were an english major i would be talking all about writing but here i am having a side-tangent about world-building via someone being reborn wow i love this for me (don't get me started on when an author has someone reincarnate as a baby and the story is mostly them having warm fluffy moments with their family--typically father figures--and getting lots of powers i could and would and probably will rant about east asian toxicity)

but anyway am i crazy????? like yes for being passionate about the technical use of a word like genre (i am a scorpio rising let me be fussy pls) but i don't think it's a lot to ask for ppl to not unironically see "villainess revenge isekai" as the definition of korean manhwa.

idk as someone who resonates with why japanese isekai is so popular domestically + why a lot of korean manhwa feat. the same tropes (it's not for great reasons lads it's actually depressing tbh) i'm just starting to feel kind of pained by the generalization and need to separate "cute japanese girl in an otome game"/"japanese boy finds a harem in another world" from "korean girl dies and comes back as a villainess" bc they are just! applications to the same story device!!

Over the past year my pandemic brain decided it would produce happy chemicals exclusively by reading and writing Stony fanfiction. On the advice of counsel, I decided to take my happy chemicals where I could get’em. And the result is that I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of reading some absolutely incredible works of art by some immensely talented people. And since it’s @cap-ironman RecWeek, I figured this is as good of an excuse as any to make some posts recommending my favs (and try to keep self-recs to a minimum, but I’m only human).

I skipped Multiverse Monday since I’m still not well-versed enough in the multiverse to talk about it with any kind of recommendational authority, but today is Tropey Tuesday, and so I would like to share some fics from my all-time-favorite, major-reason-I-bother-with-the-MCU, gets-me-every-time trope:

Why You Should Read It:

Thing number one that you should understand about me is that I would be perfectly happy with a story about body-less entities making funny quips at each other in  a featureless void, and anything else is just a bonus. Elwenyere’s stories consistently get the banter down so unbelievably, ridiculously well that when you find out they also have heart, creativity, well-developed characters, and so much damn feeling in them, it feels like an embarrassment of riches.

Go read all of their stuff, please, but this one’s a great place to start. It’s got everything you could possibly want in a fic: over-competitive pumpkin carving, emotional hospital confessions, Christmas decorations that come to life and attack people, crab dip, Steve Rogers accidentally ruining Thanksgiving through the sheer power of his own snark, and most importantly, a bunch of human disasters that somehow make a beautiful family together.

They’ve got this phenomenally creative mind that manages to consistently draw out deeply human stories that can kinda catch you off-guard in the places they find touching moments. You might’ve heard of their very popular Foodieverse, which is an incredibly creative AU with the Avengers in the food service industry, but this is the one I come to whenever I’m looking to indulge in my favorite trope.

Honestly it feels a bit like cheating to recommend the first work in scifigrl47′s tremendously popular Toasterverse, since I’m pretty sure a lot of people who don’t even like or regularly read fanfiction have liked this one, even indirectly. Sci is so ludicrously good at building an engaging, creative, character-driven universe that this series is responsible for most of the fanon you know and love about MCU fanfics. Tony’s bot Butterfingers? Sci made him up for this story. Thor’s love of Pop Tarts? Clint the vent goblin? All sci. They’re just that damn good at world-building.

In this fic, the Avengers try out a chore chart. Hilarity and feels ensue. I don’t want to say anymore and risk spoiling it because if you’ve managed to get far enough in Stony fanfiction to read this post and haven’t yet read the Toasterverse, I want to keep the experience pristine for you to enjoy. SailorChibi’s one of those authors I’ve been meaning to get around to reading all their stuff for, but it’s tricky when you have a short attention span and an author that is just so damn prolific. They’re a multi-fandom maven consistently putting out some really great stuff, and they’re absolutely worth checking out.

This story’s a real yank on the heartstrings, and as someone who can really identify with Tony’s fear of failing the people he cares about, the point in the story where he reaches his low is just unbelievably poignant. But the warmth and the wholesomeness of the end made my heart grow three sizes the day I read it. And the love that all these idiots have for each other is just so damn palpable in this story, it damn near made me cry.

Tony gets kidnapped and says a lot of self-deprecating things that, unbeknownst to him, are projected on a live feed to the Avengers. They rescue him and have some opinions about how easily he could be replaced. This story’s got Tony hiding from feelings like an idiot, Steve manually carrying Tony somewhere the Avengers can say nice things about him, and a lot of feels.

Tsurugi is like my no 1 reason for getting back into Servamp, I left right in the middle of his arc and I ;-; IS HE OKAY??? DID HE GET AWAY FROM TOUMA??? DID HE BECOME WRATHS EVE??? NOBODY TELL ME I’LL FIND OUT ON MY OWN.

4. Izaya Orihara from Durarara

Ah yes, the og queen bitch. Has my taste for villains ever recovered from Izaya? No. If your villain isn’t at least a bit like Izaya I’m not interested. Durarara was one of my first serious fandoms and Izaya was the first character I ever wrote for and I think you can explain me as a person if you consider Izaya was my all time fav at 13. I can’t really say anything about Izaya that hasn’t been said thousands of times before, I love how goofy and overperformative he can be, I love how there’s so much in him once you crack him open, I love how good of a villain he is for a messy story such as DRRR, puppeteer villains are really a league of their own. We need more puppeteering twinks, maybe then I’d be more into villains yaknow.

3. Hawks from Boku no Hero Academia 

To no ones surprise!Him! I’ve been drifting off from BNHA recently what from catching bad case of JJK what from just reading n watching more other stuff and honestly that’s probably good because I’ve been into BNHA for a couple of years now as my main fandom and I really could have used a break. Not to say I don’t like BNHA anymore tbh I think right now BNHA is the best it’s ever been just ya know, drifting. That being said my love for Hawks will never die, god what a good boy and we got his backstory too aaa ;-;. BNHA was just like Servamp, something I liked but didn’t really have a fav character in until this random support character strolled in and won my heart. God I love how much we got on Hawks. He’s completely different from his initial impression and his unrelenting strive to do good despite being thrown from one horrible situation to the next is just ;-; HES SUCH A GOOD BOY. He’s selfless to a fault, literally putting everyone before himself and putting himself down for not being able to achieve more than is humanly possible I’m just ;-; I WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY. He just makes my heart happy, he’s good and warm and hardworking and in a manga where trauma plays such a major role in so many characters it’s so good to see Hawks there, having been through three different types of hell and still coming out unnerving in his goodness. All I want for him is to have a good life and to one day be able to smile for real.

2. Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen

Again no surprise since I’ve been so into jjk lately. Satoru is p high up rn cuz I’m mainly into JJK now but god knows where he will actually settle. He’s not even really my favorite character in the show, that goes to Inumaki, but this is a list of who I think about the most (tho all of these characters are either no 1 or no 2 for their shows) and boy my brother and foxy can tell you I’m constantly thinking about this bitch. I didn’t really care about him that much at the start but then I got to Hidden Inventory and OH BOY MUCH TO THINK ABOUT. Satoru is such a wonderfully complex character whos evolution you can clearly follow through the years. He’s under so much pressure as the strongest sorcerer to deal with everything and he has to operate in that system trying to change it for the better while at the same time trying to make sure his students arent sacrificed in the name of that change. He has a very goofy disposition but along side with Nanamin who’s a lot more explicit about it, it’s clear he cares about mental state of his students a whole lot. He knows this world is terrible and that the will come out of it with scars and that he can’t protect them from all of it, but he balances protecting and letting them grow as much as he can. They need to grow so jujutsu society can change after all, but they also need to be protected so they don’t fuckin die before that can happen. This is without all the many many opinions I have on Hidden Inventory and SatoSugu as a whole, how they influenced each other, how differently they reacted to their shared trauma (Funny how everyone on this list is fuckin traumatized) and what resulted from it. How their fucking love story is dramatic enough to be a Shakespeare play. Also I like it when he’s long and goofy ahahah

1. Chuuya Nakahara from Bungou Stray Dogs

Not to objectify men on main but I couldn’t choose a picture 

If there is ever a day when I don’t go feral over Chuuya I’ll probably be dead. He not only lives in my head rent free he owns the place.

HES SO UNDERUSED.

BSD has such a great setup with Chuuya, like he’s ex partners with the mentor of the main character who got betrayed and abandoned when the mentor left shared evil organization. Sounds like grounds for drama right? YOUD THINK SO. Like Chuuya and Dazai have such a great and interesting dynamic and you can feel how strained it is from the distance and betrayal and they bicker and fight as their defining relationship trait BUT there is such a strong underlying trust to all the fighting. These two trust each other with their whole lives and that hasn’t changed despite everything, despite how much time has passed and how much that trust had been tested. So you’d think he’d be an important character :) HES STUCK IN SUPPORT HONESTLY HES STUCK IN BACKGROUND UNLESS HES NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING COOL AAAAAA. Chuuya is literally one of a kind, I’ve never seen a character with such a good design and such an cool power and such an interesting relationship to one of the main characters and such a love and support from the fandom BE SO UTERLLY AND COMPLETLY WASTED. Even when we get Chuuya scraps they rarely build on relationship he has in canon but just throw in new random ones at him (tho that’s a broader problem of Kafka throwing new characters at the plot instead of developing the one he already has really). We get a hint of a cool fight with him? Completely cut out, More often then not it just feels like he is benched because he’s so damn strong there would just be no plot tension if he went in and broke some heads (which is also a problem with Satoru, guys stop writing op characters if you’ll just put em on the bus aaa). Anyway he’s completly and utterly wasted by the plot.

And it’s such a waste because he’s such a good character. Like he’s a member if the villain organization and is obviously by that very vicious and violent but also so empathetic and kind to people he considers his friends. He and Dazai have the brawn and brain thing going on and stg Chuuya is like the only brawn I can think of that is classier then their brain. Look at how this guy dressed, he’s high class gay, hat, choker, coat, gloves, he is bringing in the looks. I love how he can actually be completely calm and rational and put together but then put him with Dazai and it’s back to ‘we are 15 and we will scream out heads off at each other’, they are so childish. 

Anyway I love Chuuya he deserves to be treated better and I will never stop screaming about Chuuya ever

Getting to know Y/N was a challenge. An uphill battle that took longer than most would think.

On the outside, she was a bubbly woman. Always seen with a smile on her face and a bright eyed gaze that screamed joyful bliss.

On the inside, Y/N felt as if she were constantly living the life of a character in a horror movie. Specifically, the last girl.

Even now, as she stood next to Ashton at Calum’s house, enjoying a birthday party for the latter, she couldn’t shake the anxiety. Whenever she thought she was safe and free from what was haunting her, it reappeared. Sometimes in a new form, sometimes in the same form. Sometimes she had a break for a while until she was thrust into a sequel.

She had considered changing her name to Sidney Presscott just as her own macabre homage.

Ashton knew that if he could achieve only one more thing in his life, then it would be to allow Y/N to open up to somebody. Somebody she trusts.

Her life had been through ups and downs, Ashton knew that. It began when she was a teenager, through a cheating boyfriend.

Time and time again, relationship after relationship, she had her heart broken.

Betrayal, cheating, lying, and more recently, violence.

Her most recent ex, Matthew, was a kind man at first. He wooed her mother, earned respect from her father, worked his way into her heart and began to learn every soft spot that was left inside of the hardened muscle.

He knew where she was weak and he took advantage of it.

It started as emotional abuse, then financial abuse. She wasn’t allowed to have control of her own funds. She couldn’t pay for anything. Every purchase was made from his account.

He would call her names, degrade her. Remind her that he was all she had at that time. He plucked tunes from her heartstrings with the promise that if she left him, no other would love her again.

Then things became physical. It started as shoving and escalated to punching, kicking, choking.

Her fingers unconsciously grazed the fine scar that trailed through her left eyebrow.

Ashton smiled down at her, seeming to not notice the growing emotion in her features as he was getting more buzzed by the minute.

She didn’t mind. He was her boyfriend, not her therapist. If she wanted him to know how she was feeling then she would tell him. For now, she was perfectly fine with sorting this bout of emotion into the neat filing cabinet of traumatic memories and outbursts that she kept within her.

She could always handle herself. She had been doing it for so long that independence was a second nature to her.

Ashton, on the other hand, knew something was wrong with his girlfriend. He could almost read her expression like a book, after a year and a half of dating.

She had left her ex almost three years prior, yet she still held much of the trauma inside of her.

If Ashton rose his voice too high, she would flinch. If he wanted to pay for something, she would meekly accept and wear a fearful expression the entire time. She would apologize profusely for the simplest of mistakes.

It broke his heart to think of what she went through. He knew not the extent, but he knew enough to feel his heart ache for the woman he had grown to love, and complete contempt for the man that hurt her.

Y/N was handling herself well. She was doing her best to enjoy the party, and it was working. She downed a few drinks, danced a little with Crystal, and even joined in on laughter following some jokes told by Calum. Regularly, she would only laugh at what Ashton would say. He was the only one she really trusted.

The night was going more than well until her eyes met those of a single man.

He had a blonde woman by the waist, leading her into the large lounge room and Y/N felt her heart sunk as if full with thousands of lead bricks.

Instantly, her palms dampened. Her forehead began to ache with memories of the night she left him.

And then his eyes found her.

She didn’t know why he could have been invited to Calum’s party, or how even. She supposed maybe he just came along. The blonde woman seemed to widen her eyes when she landed then on Calum, and she quickly trailed after him.

It wasn’t rare for fans to sneak into parties just to get a glimpse of the men. But even as the woman walked away, Matthew still watched Y/N.

She seemed to shrink under his gaze, and Ashton caught sight of that. He didn’t know who the man directing such a dangerous glare towards his girlfriend was, but he made sure to tighten the arm that was around her and press a kiss to her forehead.

Y/N felt the care in the simple action and directed a shaky smile to her boyfriend.

Nevertheless, Matthew’s brown eyed glare focused on her.

He made attempts to work his way closer to her, yet she made an attempt to ignore his presence.

Crystal offered her a shot and she smiled with acceptance, downing the liquid and cringing as it burned.

The real trouble came when Ashton excused himself.

“I need to go to the bathroom, I’ll be back in a sec, okay?” He looked as if he were asking her for permission, watching as her expression changed for half a second before transitioning into a small smile and a nod.

He had barely been gone a minute when she felt the eyes on her back. Every time she turned around, Matthew was there. Her own personal horror movie villain, and she was in yet another sequel.

A hand graded her arm and she shuffled away. She ignored the questions from her friends as her feet moved on their own accord.

She was outside by the time she realised tears were streaming down her face. Her hands flew to her hair, tugging the roots firmly to bring her focus away from her mind and the man inside of the house.

Her vision was fuzzy, blurred by tears or the panic attack, she knew not. She made it to Ashton’s car before her knees gave out, and she crumpled against the side of the vehicle as sobs and fast paced breath rocked her figure.

Ashton was in the bathroom for two minutes. He counted, just to make sure he wasn’t away from Y/N for longer than he wanted to be. He knew something was going on with her, and while he was never the type to always need to be with his significant other, he wanted to make sure she was okay.

When he returned, the concerned gazes of his friends shone back at him, as if he were looking into a mirror.

“Ash, Y/N ran out.” Crystal walked towards him. It was hard to hear over the music, and some of his friends were too inebriated to realize Y/N had left. “I don’t know what happened. She just left and I couldn’t see where she went to follow her.”

Ashton furrowed his brows, placing his hand on his friend’s shoulder. He nodded a thanks, his mind going elsewhere to find his girlfriend.

He felt eyes on him, and he turned to see the same brown eyed gaze that was fixed on his girl.

In any other circumstances, he would have approached the man, but for the time being, he needed to find Y/N.

Y/N knew her jeans were stained from the damp grass, and she knew her face would be blotchy, but she couldn’t force the sobs to stop.

Her head was staring to ache from her grip on her hair, and her eyes were stinging from the running mascara.

She barely even recognized the feel of a large hand on her knee until her face was pulled up slightly and her eyes focused on a head of red hair.

The hazel eyes of the person stared down at her and she watched the lips move but she was deaf to the sound.

Slowly her fingers were loosened and the pressure on her scalp began to fade. Her eyes came to focus on the face in front of her and she choked on a sob as she gathered the energy to wrap herself around Ashton.

“Baby? What happened?” He rubbed her back, rocking slightly side to side as he sat himself down so she could crawl into his lap.

Her face was pressed against his neck, her back rising and falling faster than he had ever seen her take in breath.

“Home,” was the only thing she could will her voice to say.

Ashton did his best to stand, cradling her against him as confusion washed through him. He had no idea what set her off, but he definitely had a feeling it was connected to the man who couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

He had never seen her have a panic attack before, nor had he seen her cry. She was always so held together and strong, and it broke his heart to see her in such a way, and to not know the cause of it.

He set her in the passenger seat, detaching her limbs from around his neck only for her to wrap them around her knees. Thankfully, she was no longer gripping at her hair, but he hoped the attack would come to an end in the few minutes it would take to reach their house.

He made sure to keep his hand on her knee the whole way home, only taking it off to turn into their drive way and then to rush around and help her out of the car.

Her heavy breathing had stopped, along with the tears. Now she appeared dazed and shaken, unsure if herself and stumbling about on wobbling legs.

It was a few minutes before he attempted to bring up the topic, but when he did, she pushed a deep sigh from her lungs.

“I saw Matthew. My ex.” Realization set in with Ashton. The brown eyed man. “The one who...” she trailed off, fingers skimming the scar protruding through her brow.

“Baby, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know,” he whispered to her softly, moving towards her as slowly as he could.

She resembled a scared animal at the time, curled up, flinching at every sudden movement, doe eyed and quiet.

“S’fine, Ash. It’s not your problem to deal with, it’s mine. I shouldn’t have made you take me home-“

Ash interrupted her by resting his large hand underneath her trembling chin. She flinched at the sudden movement before relaxing until his touch. She allowed her eyes to trail up and meet his hazel ones.

“Love, your problems are my problems. I hate that I couldn’t be there to help you and I’m seriously trying to not go and beat the shit out of him.” A soft sigh left Y/N and she nodded softly. “No matter what, you have me. You have me until the day you no longer want me, because I want you forever.”

Tears pricked at her eyes. She hadn’t heard such kindness before. Her past relationships had all combusted from the inside out, and after Matthew, she was convinced she would be living through sequel after sequel with similar villains.

“If you need me, I am here. You have this mindset that you’re always going to face trouble, but love, the last girl always has a happy ending in the end,” Ashton told her in a hushed voice. “I love you, Y/N.”

She let a few tears fall, slowly untangling her arms from around her knees to take their place around Ashton’s torso. Her head rested against his chest and she allowed the sound of his even breathing and thumping heart to soothe her muscles and mind.

“I love you, Ash.”

I see Ben as a house husband/eager cook/domestic headcanons all over the Reylo fandom, may I ask why they’re so popular or if there’s a particular origin? I like them don’t get me wrong it’s just the first m/f ship I’ve shipped where the fandom has frilly-apron headcanons for the warrior male character. It’s really nice tbh

I mean it is a fairly common trope in my experience for enemies to lovers ships where the villain/antagonist character has some sort of hidden compassion/softness that comes into full bloom when the ex-villain gets to drop the evil act. I’ve seen this happen with several ships. I wouldn’t be able to tell you if there’s an “origin,” although with reylo this interpretation of reylo was not popular until after TLJ and the fandom collectively had the realization that reylo was a soft ship, not a fuckprince ship (yes I will always be a little bitter it took that long but whatever).

It’s just a popular thing because it’s already a natural extension of the character. It works with redeemed villain types where the villain was pushed into it by some sort of forced choice, but where their natural personality is more warm and compassionate. Ben as a character is of that type, so...that’s where it comes from.

fanfic lingo crash course

cause sometimes i feel like im speaking a different language. i tried my best to get everything, although i dont read or write nsfw so i didnt really get into that.

note: original work in this post refers to the thing that the fanfic is being written about

genres

fluff: cute and happy. nothing bad happens.            -domestic fluff: usually two people who are married or in a relationship doing cute everyday things together such as making breakfast or taking care of their kids etc. the focus is on the fact that the two people are together           -slice of life: similar to domestic fluff. is a story showing two people, usually married or in a long term relationship together, going about their day. focus is on the fact that the two of them are experiencing daily life together.           -soft fluff: where one or more characters treat another very gently, or are stupidly enamored and/or caring towards the other person. usually shown through hair stoking, cuddling, etc. sometimes is also a component in hurt/comfort.

angst: a major component of the story is something bad happening to one or more characters. can be physical or psychological. can be intentional or unintentional (ex. a murder plot as opposed to a car accident).            -angst with a happy ending: the character or characters overcome the physical or psychological abuse/torture/accident (often with the help of another character) and the story has a happy ending                     •hurt/comfort: a sub genre of angst that is usually a combination of angst and fluff. most commonly, a character gets hurt/abused/tortured/is in an accident/is having mental health issues and another character patiently helps them through the situation/nurses them back to health/etc. hurt/comfort does not always signify a happy ending but it is very common. often times the comfort portion of the fic is very soft as the character caring for the hurt character is concerned. may result in a realization of feelings.           -angst with no happy ending: the character or characters do not overcome the physical or psychological abuse/torture/accident resulting in a sad ending. often includes character death or breakups.            -whump: torturing a character emotionally, psychologically, or physically to their limits and beyond. character becomes so damaged that sometimes it is irreversible. the whumper refers to the character inflicting the torture, the whumpee refers to the character receiving the torture and the caretaker refers to the character taking care of the whumpee in the aftermath of the torture. can include hurt/comfort.

crack: a humorous fic that is often out of character or has the characters doing something that is ridiculously stupid. examples include fics where characters are high or anything that makes you laugh your ass off at 3am

nsfw: not safe for work. includes fics where sex or sexual activities is a component. there are many sub genres of nsfw but im not familiar enough with them to write about them.

types of fics/character behavior

canon: refers to the original work that the fanfic is derived from. (aka the tv show, book, movie, musical etc) (anything that is outside of the realms of the original work is considered non-canon compliant)           -canon compliant: implies that the fic could fit into the original work or plot that the fanfic is written about. could also refer to characters behaving the same way that they do in the original work.           -canon era: the fic takes place in the era/time period/timeline that the original work does. (ex. if the original work takes place in the 1800s and your fic takes place in the 1800s, it takes place in the canon era)

au: alternate universe. refers to the characters of an original work being put into a timeline/era/storyline/situation that does not appear in the original work. the characters themselves and their character arcs usually remain the same. also a broad term for anything that is not canon. (ex. single parent!au, space!au, firefighter!au, the list goes on)           -modern era: refers works that include characters from original works that are not set in present day being placed in a present day timeline.           -historical au: refers works where characters are placed into a time line that takes place in the past. (ex. world war 2 au)            -canon divergence: an au where the fic strays relatively little from the original work. there is often a point of departure from the timeline of the original work, commonly in a characters backstory. (ex. au where everything is the same except perry the platypus’s nemesis isnt dr doofenshmirtz) (dont clown me that was the first thing i came up with)           -fix it: a fic that is written to replace a dumb scene in the original work. these types of fics are common in tv show or movie fandoms. (ex. fix it where steve rogers didnt go back in time and live out his life with peggy in endgame and instead had a happy ending with bucky)           -ooc: out of character. where a character does something or behaves in a way that they did not in the original work                     •evil/good![character’s name]: refers to one specific character’s behavior straying from canon by either becoming the hero if they were the villain or becoming the villain if they were the hero.                      •character redemption: refers to making an evil character or villain good by having them overcome their negative behavior.

January 6, 2021: Last Action Hero (Part 2)

SPOILERS! And check out Part 1 beforehand! Anyway, let’s go! Got a lot to cover, TRUST me.

So, this movie is incredibly cluttered. Anyway, Slater makes his way to the Fart Bomb, and Practice (makes perfect) is a dirty cop working for Vivaldi. Danny and Slater get chained to a pipe, and I’m still surprised we haven’t even slightly revisited the time Danny got taken hostage about, what, an hour ago? Whiskers the Cat Cop arrives and shoots Salieri, and I weep for the part of my sanity that just died typing that sentence.

I want you to know, I mad that GIF. I had to type “furball problem.” I’m losing it, you guys...and I think I’m enjoying it.

Together, Slater and Danny steal the body of Leo the Fart (HUP, there goes a little more sanity), everybody at the funeral has a gun (including one old woman with a straight-up grenade launcher), and so, SO much property is abused and damaged. In other words, it’s a pretty fun action sequence. Leo drops into a conveniently placed tar pit alongside Jack Slater, and Danny briefly becomes a domestic terrorist by shooting a gun in a public area, WOW, the ‘90s was a different time!

So, it’s at this point that I start getting annoyed by Danny always being meta. I realize that I've been praising it for this, but...yeah, no, it’s starting to get annoying now. Especially considering that we’ve got an hour left in the movie. But, on the bright side, it’s also at this point that Benedict becomes my favorite character. This gorgeous motherfucker kills Vivaldi (whose plan was completely nonsensical, by the way), and then turns to the screen. Charles Dance effortlessly channels the spirit of Shakespeare’s Richard III, Duke of Gloucester, as says this to the audience:

If that little turd, Daniel Madigan, can move through parallel worlds, I can move through parallel worlds. In and out! In, steal whatever I want, and out again! Impossible to catch!

I can add colors to the chameleon, change shapes with Proteus for advantages, AND SET THE MURDEROUS MACHIAVEL TO...Anyway...  

Charles Dance is giving his absolute best energies to this role. And this might be a silly movie, but godDAMN is Benedict a great villain for it. It’s immediately followed by the surreal image of a monster truck crashing through the wall of this mansion, and the fight leads to Benedict, Professor Toru Tanaka, Danny, and Jack Slater falling through a portal created by the ticket, and ending up in the real world.

We put Jack’s action-movie world in contrast with the real world, first with little things, and then with a legitimately vicious-looking car accident. Like, wow, it’s a VERY realistic-looking accident. I’d show a GIF of it, but...wow, it’s extremely affecting. Toru dies, and there’s, uh...there’s blood. Man. It’s rough, honestly.

Speaking of affecting, Jack is beginning to understand the true nature of his reality. And Schwarenegger does an OK job pulling that pain off...but like everybody in this movie, his emotions are way calmer than mine would be if I were in his shoes. But there is one character I can identify with: Nick, the theater owner. When he finds out that the ticket works, he starts to talk about the movies he could now visit, the people he could meet. OK, most of them are beautiful female starlets, but still! I get it! Do you know how much I would love to meet Stan Lee? SERIOUSLY? It’d be amazing.

I can also identify with Danny’s mother, who is rightfully PISSED. Seriously, this kid just got assaulted by a robber, brought to the police, and went directly TO THE MOVIE THEATER. GROUND THIS CHILD. GROUND HIM SO GODDAMN HARD.

And then, Benedict experiences the darkest part of the real world, and Dance again shows his talent. He begins by showing surprise and mild horror at the depravity of an early 1990s New York City (a little more dramatically bad than it was in real life at this point, but still), then sees a man assaulted (and possibly killed) for his shoes. He remarks at this in horror...then realizes that the police don’t come as quickly as they do in his film universe. He experiments by killing a man in cold blood, in public, and no one stops him. 

Upon realizing his potential freedom in this world...he makes a plan. He uses the ticket, and brings back...the Ripper. ANY OTHER MOVIE VILLAIN? Dracula? Freddy Kreuger? Jason? Like...nobody? That is...such a missed opportunity, goddamn.  Anyway, their plan is to kill Arnold Schwarzenegger. As in the REAL Arnold Schwarzenegger, who actually appears upon his real-life wife at the time Maria goddamn Shriver! Which...yeah, that’s cool, but...the amount of celebrity cameos in this scene is, frankly, INSANE. 

Here’s a list: Little Richard, Jim Belushi, Damon Wayans, Chevy Chase, JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME, MC Hammer. And that’s not counting Tina Turner (the mayor earlier), Sharon Stone, Robert Patrick, Joan Plowright, and...well, I’ll save the best for last.

I haven’t even mentioned the development of Slater’s as a three-dimensional character in multiple different ways; the Ripper showing up at the movie premiere alongside the movie actor, Tom Noonan; the Ripper KILLING NOONAN’S REAL WORLD AGENT...

This movie is insane. So much to cover, and yet it’s SUCH A LONG GODDAMN MOVIE. This movie is 2 hours and 11 minutes long! SERIOUSLY! I am tired, I gots to go to BEEEEED. Let’s get this climax over with, shall we? Arnold Schwarzenegger meets Jack Slater in some REALLY seamless effect work (this movie has actually aged SO well, damn), the Ripper kidnaps Danny and brings him to the roof of the theater, in a bid to reenact their old battle. Some meta dialogue takes place from the Ripper, and he THROWS DANNY OFF THE ROOF. Noonan’s also actually pretty good at playing this unhinged, Joker-esque maniac, by the way.

Jack kills the Ripper (again), and Danny’s saved from falling by Jack, just in time for Benedict to show up and make my day once more. He expounds the true potential of the ticket and film villains (frustrating me even more), while also chewing the scenery splendidly. He points out that any movie villain would love the real world, noting that in this world, the bad guys win. He shoots Jack Slater, and as he’s about to win, Slater shoots him in the eye, resulting in this shot.

Nice. 

But he drops the ticket, which lands near a theater showing the classic Ingmar Bergman film, The Seventh Seal, a movie which is on my list for Drama December. Or maybe Experimental June, I haven’t decided yet. Anyway, the ticket activates in front of that theater and...that’s Ian fucking McKellen.

THAT IS IAN. FUCKING. MCKELLEN. PLAYING INGMAR BERGMAN’S DEATH. WHAT. HOLY SHIT. And that happens just as Slater is literally about to die in the ambulance, and Danny summons his domestic terrorist impulses again, whipping out a gun and hijacking the ambulance to get Jack back to the theater. Meanwhile, Ian McKellen just KILLS a dude on the street, because this movie is secretly AMAZING. DeathKellen follows the ambulance to Nick’s movie theater as Jack is dying. Leading to one of the most surreal things I’ve ever seen.

McKellen fucking TAKES this movie as an omnipotent death, and is essentially Death ex Machina. My God. This movie is the silliest, craziest, wackiest, most nonsensical, crazy movie that I’ve seen...and goddamn does it have some amazingly great moments. To the extent that I only just realized that the fucking cartoon cat is voiced by DANNY FUCKING DEVITO. WHAT. THE FUCK.

And all of this is also running over the almost completely ignored fact that Danny is still greatly saddened about the death of his father. And this film completely passes that fact over. Like I said, there’s so much extra folderol in the film, and it really did have the chance to be this emotional, existential epic. But sadly...it’s kind of all over the place.

Anyway, Jack’s back in the movie, where his wounds heal, and he now has a new understanding of his own fictional existence. He officially becomes the meta. And also ruins the Jack Slater franchise forever. Yeah, uh...the franchise has literally become self aware. And that’s not gonna be a good thing for the movie.

And that’s Last Action Hero! Epilogue coming in a few hours, so stay tuned for that. And I gotta tell you...I have some words to say about this movie. Some great, and some...stay tuned.
