The Demon’s Queen
Chapter Eight
First <> Previous
Sabine was not stupid, in fact she liked to believe that her daughter got her wits and agility from herself.  That being said, Sabine knew that her daughter was not abroad in the Americas for anything.  The emails she’d gotten from her daughter, no matter how much it sounded like Marinette, could not be her.  The confirmation from her teachers saying that she’s been looking at places abroad, her friends saying they had heard her rambling about leaving soon made her wonder if she had truly been offered the opportunity that she had only discovered when Marinette had disappeared.  But Sabine knew that wasn’t the case because Marinette would have come straight home and rambled about the pros and cons of this mysterious opportunity for hours on end both with her and Tom as well as in her room with Tikki.  That’s right, she knew.  Unfortunately for Marinette, but fortunately for herself as a mother, Marinette had inherited Tom’s ability to lie, which was basically non-existent.  She hadn’t told Tom about their daughter for that exact reason, but with everything that has happened in the past forty-eight hours, she knew she was going to have to.
The first and biggest red flag was when a new Ladybug hero showed up, a young boy no less.  Sabine knew that there was no way in the universe that Marinette would hand over those earrings to anybody unless she was dying, and even then she would only give them to someone she trusted with her entire existence and with the way Chat reacted to the boy, she doubted that Marientte had given them to him.  That meant that they had either been stolen from her and she was in fact dead, or she had been kidnapped by a higher power and they had found a way to take them from her by force.  Then there was the fact that Gabriel and his assistant had been brutally attacked in their own homes by, “a young man with dark black armored robes with weapons all over his person including a long sword sheathed at his side”.  There was no camera or audio evidence of the attack or of the supposed attacker.  Poor Adrien had been devastated when he had gotten the news of the attack, but it confirmed a theory in her mind.  The boy must have been after the Miraculous, which meant that Gabriel and Nathalie must have been Hawkmoth and Mayura, but it didn’t matter now.  The person must have taken their jewels, so they would no longer be a threat to Paris (in the back of her mind Sabine thought that they deserved far worse than a few stab wounds for all of the horrors they put this city through if they really were the villains).
When the Mayor announced that the information ban would be lifted a week after Marinette’s disappearance, and the police still hadn’t found anything about what happened to her baby girl, Sabine went straight to the phone and called the one hotline that she had wanted to call since the beginning of Hawkmoth’s Reign.  So with shaking fingers she waited as the line rang and only when she heard the soft anthem that she had been told meant that someone was answering her call did she let out a small sigh of relief.
“This is Superman, what is your emergency?”
__________
Marinette felt miserable, she had fallen asleep as soon as she sat down on the bed due to the pure exhaustion that ran through her body.  Because of that she apparently woke up late and Maha was not pleased.  Her body was sore, her motions sluggish, and she was getting her butt handed to her on a silver platter.  In the first battle Maha pinned her to the floor with nearly choking her out with her slim hand pushing down against her neck as she whispered into her ear,
“You disappoint me in every way.  Those who do not respect my time and thus the League’s time are not worthy.  You must redeem yourself,”
She spat, eyes cold and filled with disgust as she stared down at the young girl.  Maha stood up as gracefully as ever, delicately flicking her wrist as she calmly spoke.  A soft smile bloomed across her delicate features but carried that sharp dagger-like feature the rest of her figure did.
“You will fight my three best students.”
Once Marinette was back on her feet she turned and came face to face with three individuals.  She couldn’t see their faces as they were all covered by masks, but she could tell from their body types that she was in trouble.  All of them were taller than her, which put her at a slight disadvantage, especially if she would be fighting them all at once like she suspected she would be.  The one on the far right was the tallest and had the most muscle match, they looked almost like her father except for the fact that his muscle was more intentional than Tom’s.  The middle one was only a few inches shorter than the person on the right, but still a foot or two taller than her, they were lithe, body skin and lithe almost exactly like Maha’s but more masculine in the way the muscle formed.  Finally the person on the left, the smallest of the group standing a solid foot taller than her.  She could feel their eyes on her watching and studying everything she did as she did the same to them.  Maha stepped off the mat and the first two began their attack while the last one stayed in place, observing her movements and reactions.
Despite her sore and aching muscles Marinette moved quickly, her fight or flight response activated causing her to duck and roll as the largest of the two tried to grab her.  She knew they were testing her, trying to figure out how she moved, her openings, her weaknesses.  Marinette knew that she wasn’t going to win this fight, especially without the extra endurance the Miraculous gave.  It didn’t help that her ankle was throbbing with each movement from her weapons training she had yesterday.  Sweat began to drip from her temple as she constantly ducked and dodged, the twos’ attacks a constant, unrelenting force.  Then there was the third, Marinette tried her best to keep them in her line of sight, and she was successful with it until a hit landed in her gut knocking the air out of her as she fell and rolled.  She looked around but they were gone, and she knew that it would be her downfall as she felt hands press down on points on her neck and arms rendering her motionless and open for the chokehold she was immediately put in.
Stars lined her sight as her lungs were unable to draw in any breath, she was going to die, she wouldn’t escape, she’d never be able to-
“Enough.”
The grip released her letting Marinette gasp for air, coughing slightly as she greedily took it all in, tears in her eyes.
“I hope you have learned your lesson Khata.”
She could hear the three others chuckle at the name, and while Marinette didn’t know what the name meant, she knew it wasn’t good.
“You did good work Jackals, you may return to your duties.”
With that one command they disappeared on silent feet, not a single word ever escaping their lips.
“Now Little Khata, I hope we do not have a repeat of this again.  We will start with blocks.”
There was a cruel smile on Maha’s lips as she said that.  Marinette knew that she was in for an even longer day than yesterday.
__________
Silence filled the meeting room where all of the Highest members of the Justice League sat.
“How many years did you say the attacks lasted?”
Hal asked, concern etched on his face.  No child should have had to withstand such a task, especially without the guidance of an experienced mentor.
“A little over three years.”
Superman said.  He had listened to the woman and her stories.  The tales of her daughter, the terror everyone experienced, a magic and information block that made it impossible to tell anyone outside Paris what was occurring.  Her daughter’s disappearance as well as the disappearance of all of the magical jewels, how it was no coincidence.  And he knew that this wasn’t a prank or a call of insanity, because the woman sounded so genuine and the pain in her voice was not something one could ever fake.
“Red Robin and I will check it out and report if we find anything.”
“Please do batman.”
Wonder Woman replied in a solemn, almost mournful, voice.
“I will return home and ask my mother what she knows as I know that she has worn these jewels for herself.”
“Thank you Diana.”
Superman said with a nod.  With that, everyone stood up and began to prepare for their journeys to solve this case.

Packmates
cw: trauma, grief, loss of family.
The Grove was Rau’s construct, and they kept it on a hard drive apart from By Candlelight’s ship network.
There was a compartment for what little clothing they owned. Beneath colorful silks from home and the electronic countermeasure skinsuit that they needed from time to time, the drive was stashed with a short neural-interface cable and a bottle of mild sleep medication. The drive was armored in a radiation-hardened case and equipped with an intrusion countermeasures package. Not that it really needed either of those, but Rau felt strongly that those components should be invested in such a precious thing.
There were still nights when Rau needed it. When they could feel the panic squirming behind their eyes, making their teeth clench and their breath come in pathetic gasps, when their feathers stood on end and became a shrill haze around their body. When they couldn’t stand it anymore, they fed themself the pills and connected to the drive and forced themself down into frenzied sleep.
Mostly, it happened when Hunter was gone or synched up to another day/night cycle, leaving Rau to sleep alone. More often than not, it was a tiny inconvenience. Uncomfortable, like sleeping on the floor, but Rau was getting used to it. Luxury wasn’t an expectation aboard the team’s little gunship. Sometimes, Mickey would offer her company, but Rau didn’t have the nerve to ask if she didn’t make the offer first. There was also Ha-yun, but Rau didn’t want to ask her either, and she had never offered.
The last thing Rau wanted to do was to burden their packmates, even if they really couldn’t view Rau as a packmate in return—and Terran boundaries were easy to cross by mistake. If two Terrans slept together, Rau had learned, it was perceived in most of their cultures to be a mark of a romantic relationship. Synonymous, even. In that light, Rau really didn’t want to push it. Terrans just needed their space, and that wasn’t going to change.
For whatever reason, though, Hunter didn’t seem to have an issue sharing a bed. Rau hadn’t thought to ask him why that was. Maybe he didn’t like being alone either, or maybe he didn’t come from a culture where it might be a source of embarrassment. Maybe he did, and he just didn’t give a damn, and anyone who questioned it could go find the nearest airlock. That would be a very Hunter-like way of looking at things.
But Hunter wasn’t around for the moment. He was off patrolling the space around the civilian freighter that Candlelight had as an escort client, using his fighter’s active sensor bubble to ward off attackers. Mickey had the cockpit of Candlelight while Rau and Ha-yun took a rest shift. As the ship closed the last few days toward the Jupiter system, attacks from short-range pirate craft would be more likely, so they had taken to keeping two people at the ready. One patrolling, one keeping watch aboard Candlelight. With the threat of combat so close at hand, there was a lump of tension lodged in Rau’s gut.
They tried running drone sims for a bit, as though confronting an imaginary enemy in the ship’s softspace would help keep the real thing at bay. As they guided their trio of drones through the drills, immersing themself in the parallel streams of audio-encoded information from each one, there was a measure of relief, if only in the form of momentary distraction.
Imaginary ships broke apart under Rau’s fire, but they felt no satisfaction. Their anxiety began to creep back in. Eventually, they shut down the program and lay silent on their bunk instead, staring at the ceiling as they extracted the cable from the neural port at the nape of their neck. In the absence of a point of focus to drive it away, their anxiety bloomed into panic, shortening their breaths to quick gasps and tightening their chest. They didn’t feel like waiting for the breaking point that night, so they reached for their pills and the drive containing the Grove instead.
Down they slipped, into a neurally-augmented dream. In the dream, Rau was resting on soft grass, with a warm, fragrant breeze flowing through their feathers. Familiar trees swayed overhead, laden with melons that radiated white bioluminescence into the night.
Volu, Ralk, and Dao were resting with Rau. Their limbs were tangled, chests rising and falling with their synchronized breathing beneath a brightly-colored silk blanket.
Ralk opened one eye slightly and grinned. He reached out and flicked Rau’s upper left ear, hitting the scar hidden beneath their feathers. Rau remembered—only Ralk would have known the scar was even there. It was made by his claws, back when the two of them were only hatchlings. They’d fought over a plastic model of a gunship, tripped and fallen over a table, tumbled to the ground. When Ralk got up, there was blood dripping from his nails, and Rau had screamed. The two of them had joked about it ever since. When Rau had their old body replaced with a prosthetic one, they insisted that the surgeons replicate that scar.
Volu had her chin resting on Rau’s shoulder, cheek pressed to theirs, the same way she had when they were young and her first partner had left her after a few weeks. The pack had gathered around her and generated increasingly creative insults about her ex-partner. Made it into a game: anyone who managed to draw a giggle out of her between sobs scored a point. Ralk won.
Dao was lounging across the three others, using them as a mattress. Hands laced behind her head, Queen of the Universe, her faux arrogance a running skit started by an incident that each of them recounted slightly differently. Rau’s version was the least scathing, but probably only because they wanted to remember her fondly.
This was the limit of the simulation. Rau could see them, feel the warmth and the texture of their plumage, hear the distinct flavor of each packmate’s voice as they breathed and muttered in their sleep. Each one of them looked, felt, and sounded exactly as they had, but they wouldn’t wake up.
In long, frenzied stretches of desperation, Rau had tried recreating them as virtual simulacra. They were too perfect. Never needed Rau or asked for anything, just took care of them with their idealized personalities and motions and scripted words. A desecration of their memory.
So, Rau deleted most of their behavior coding, but kept their images and put them into a sleep routine that would loop until the program was shut down. When they needed to, Rau came to join them.
They knew better than to stay for too long.
____
Thanks to @flashfictionfridayofficial for the prompt, “An Old Friend,” and thank you for reading.
Exploring a character of mine from a WIP called Vargheist. Some context: Rau is an Avali, a species from an old Starbound mod that I’ve liked for a long time. In lore, Avali are extremely communal, forming nomadic packs which remain together from hatching to the end of their lives. They’re hardly ever apart. Each pack has unique social cues and such an intricate understanding of one another that they can communicate ideas almost instantly, facilitating seamless cooperation.
After losing their pack, stranded in a distant system with no access to the expensive faster-than-light travel needed to return home, Rau fell in with a group of Terrans. The crew of By Candlelight are tight-knit, but they’re no replacement.

A Game Novice's Baldur's Gate 3 Log, 6 1/2 hours in: I might just be getting somewhere
(Note: this will definitely contain spoilers for all I've played through, and probably quite a bit of the later stuff I've also seen.)
I spent the week continuing with my Baldur's Gate 3 experiment, even as the dialog sequences ran excruciatingly slow, due to the animation going at half the pace as the audio. I now suspect the problem is my computer's struggling with our internet connection, which it has ever since Comcast insisted on replacing the modem. Which is part the reason we may finally be doing something about that next week, and I may pause playing until such time as we do. But that depends on how long it takes. I'm kind of getting hooked on this game, despite everything.
After last weekend saw Sara Tully, my barbarian Tav, successfully find Gale, and me fail to figure out how to lockpick, I went and looked up how to do the latter. (Of course it was the obvious way I hadn't thought of.) So first thing when I resumed was to take the party back to the big locked door on the beach to try to get through it. Except Astarion failed two checks in a row, resulting the loss of all our thieves tools. Guess I'm not finding out what's behind that door in this run.
After that I looked up Lae'zel's location and went to find her, and once again managed to go the wrong way, hitting the chapel entrance instead. So we ended up killing Gimblebock and the bandits outside, which made me feel a bit too much like a murderhobo, but at least, at long last, I finally got Sara to rage, marker by her box and everything. I have also now equipped her with a looted goblin bow, so she can even do ranged attacks while raging. Also we were able to get another set of thieves tools out of it. I even happily took Astarion up to the chapel door-except that when we heard the other bandits calling out through it, I decided to just walk away.
He did, on the other hand, successfully lockpick us through the trapdoor outside. Which of course led to another fight, one that felt very much like a learning experience about positioning characters in the game and recognizing when they are and aren't in silence AOEs. But I was much less sorry when we made contact with Withers, whom I hadn't known about, though I've since learned he's a camp follower, and I suspect I'll enjoy having him about. Maybe going the wrong way in this game isn't such a bad thing.
Still I was impatient to get back the Emerald Grove, so I scrutinized the maps a little more carefully (another skill I'm still developing) and finally got to Lae'zel, sent her captors on their way by saying I'd deal with her, and then Gale shot frost on the her cage's bottom to get her down. Then I promptly sent her to camp, because the party was full, and Sara as a barbarian is a tank already. Also, reading some meta about how she probably viewed the druids made me not really want to bring her to the Grove. (And since, I've come to think I'd rather not deal with the druids' reactions to her either.)
I suppose I'm not supposed to ask how we even have a camp, when we've been doing nothing except walk around since landing in the area. Or why, when we finally returned to the Grove entrance and went in, we found Aradin and Zevlor right there arguing as if the goblin fight had still happened only moments ago. Though at least Wyll had found time to go further inside and resume his fighting lessons before we recruited him.
I've heard plenty of how Wyll is hard done by and underused by players. I kept him with the party, partly because we were in the place he knew, and also because Shadowheart was low on health and and spell slots, so it was just as well to send her off. But when leveling him up, it was hard not to observe he really has the same spells as Gale, only fewer of them, which I suspect is one of the major problems. On the other hand, I did give him Beast Speech as an invocation, which will probably result in my using him a lot more, since the animal dialog in this game is really fun.
We ended up wandering around most of the hollow, which meant hearing about the Absolute for the first time,-but I'm pretty sure Sara won't believe in the significance of that for a while. I continued to work on trying to figure the map out, even after seeing the marker for Kagha on it, making a full circuit around the sacred pool, having an important conversation with Apikusis and a hilarious one with Volo (was kind of sorry there were no conversation options for Sara to tell him how much he was pissing her off). Then, finally, I found the entrance to take us to Kagha.
By then, the talk with Apikusis has already made clear she was a bad leader, and I happened to already know about her working with the Shadow Druids. But honestly, I'm not sure who they even are, and that's really more distant fantasy novel villainy. Her introduction scene, on the other hand, where she refers to a Tiefling child as "poison" and terrorizes her for doing as young children will sometimes do? That's something that really will hit the player hard. It hit Sara hard, too, and if she hadn't really wanted to see that healer, she definitely would've tried to intimidate her, or might have even outright attacked her to rescue the kid.
Instead, I ended up going with the nature check option of her saying imprisoning little Arabella would disrupt the balance of nature. Maybe not the best choice either, since Sara has -1 on nature, but luckily she rolled high. I immediately decided that Sara was pulling words out of her ass or possibly just trolling, and Kagha was the kind of narrow-minded arrogant that completely failed to realize this. Whether the approving Wyll or Gale realized this, I am not yet certain.
The last thing I've currently done was the conversation with Gale that immediately followed this encounter. I'm pretty sure I'm going to romance him, and one could even count that interaction as flirting, if you really stretch it.
Now, however, I am looking at next facing a scene I've seen played through twice, and heard comments about, and I think may well end with us having to flee the Grove. Which is even more of a problem when I still haven't even talked with Zorru about the possible location of the Githyanki creche yet!

I felt a weird mix of emotions watching fireworks (and lighting our own small sparklers and whatnot) today. Obviously, there's all the stuff that's happened recently, but it was more the feeling of simultaneously enjoying and being in awe of the sights while feeling like I'm about to have a panic attack.
Guns and fireworks sound pretty different. If you're not thinking about it, you could mistake the sound of certain fireworks for a shotgun, but I was thinking about it, and I could tell all of the things I was hearing were fireworks. That was apparently not enough to fully relax my mind.
I think the combination of it being hot as balls and all the noises (even though I put headphones in to make it more manageable) and sights giving me some sensory overload certainly didn't help.
I'm still affected by Parkland. The shooting happened my freshman year of high school, and I live several states away from Florida. I feel silly for having such a strong reaction to a tragedy that wasn't my own and happened so far away, but it still affects me.
I remember the videos as if I saw them last week. I had trouble with (what I believe to be, having no other word that fits) audio and visual hallucinations on a regular to semi-regular basis for about the next three years, and then they petered out entirely my senior year. I didn't tell anyone about them until a few months ago, when a class discussion/video (that was not about that particular event but a separate tragedy that took place that same year and semester, so my brain did the association game) sent me back into that space.
When one of our little sparklers was set off and did more than we were expecting, I was intending to just get out of range of the sparks, but I kept running. I moved faster than I ever remember doing before, I felt in the moment like my life depended on it. I ended up tripping over myself and falling, and I remember feeling like I was going to cry because I was filled with so much dread. I wasn't really sure why, until later when I was fighting off some of the screaming in my head.
What made it so weird though was that part of me was also having a good time. Not because of the adrenaline or anything, but because I was spending time with my family and got to watch the pretty colors and gorgeous displays in the sky. It's like both of these feelings were trying to exist at the same time but wouldn't quite mesh together.
I don't know that I really have a point for this post. I was just thinking about the ways that Parkland still affects my life, even as someone pretty disconnected from the incident who's now going into their sophomore year of college. Just feeling a lot of things, I guess.

You dragged your feet to the entrance of the top floor restaurant, your palms getting sweaty as the doors slid open, making you hear the soft music more clearly. You were nowhere near interested in the blind date that your parents had set you up with. Even though you were itching to not show your face to the unfortunate man that had to see you, you didn’t have the heart to have your date be stood up by you.
You made eye contact with a female greeting you upon entry into the elegant establishment. “Hello ma’am. Do you have a reservation?”
“Yes, his name is Qian Kun.”
“Ah yes, please come this way.” She led you past the tables with light chatters, and you reached the end of the room where a man sat looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the miniature vehicles zooming on the highway.
“Sir, your date has arrived.”
Kun pried his eyes away from the window and towards you, a smile taking its place on his face. “Hello Miss Y/N. Please have a seat.” He gestured to the empty chair across him.
You nodded, timidly sitting down with your eyes wandering everywhere except on his.
“Would you like anything for starters?” he asked you gently.
You pursed your lips and shook your head. “Um, I need to tell you something.”
His lips formed an ‘oh’ and signaled for the server to leave you momentarily. “Yes, what is it?”
You took a deep breath in. “I only came here because my parents have been pestering me nonstop to get married. I’m really sorry but I’m not interested in marriage. It has nothing to do with you. It’s just me and I’m really sorry about that.”
Kun nodded, smiling tenderly at you. “I completely understand. I’m also here for that same reason.”
Your eyes widened slightly. “You too?”
“Yes. I actually want to focus on my career, and so I was hoping to get married like a few years from now. Definitely not now,” he spoke his last words quietly.
You smiled. “Well, I’m glad we’re both on the same boat. So I guess I’ll be going then since there’s no point for me to be here now,” you chuckled nervously.
He shook his head. “Please don’t. It’d be a shame to have you leave here with an empty stomach. This can just be a friendly dinner. That’s if you don’t mind, of course.”
You couldn’t say no to his kind eyes, especially when he was being a gentleman. “A friendly dinner it is.”
- ❀ -
You rang the doorbell and waited for a few seconds. The door flung open, revealing a smiling Irene. “Y/N! How did it go?” she beamed, excited to hear the details.
“You know the answer to that.” You took off your shoes and walked inside the clean spacious condo. Your eyes landed on little Aera who was on her four and you cooed, running up to her. You picked her up, cradling her tiny body in your arms and smooching a number of kisses all over her face. In return, Aera squealed happily from the sudden love attack.
Irene sighed. “You seriously did it again? Not give him a chance?”
You sat down on the couch with Aera on your lap. “Well, we did have a friendly dinner. And besides, he wasn’t interested in marriage either and he wanted to focus on his career.”
She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “You got saved this time, but it might not happen again. I don’t know how many times your parents are going to let it slide until they’ve had enough and force you into an arranged marriage.”
You cocked an eyebrow at her. “Isn’t this arranged anyway? Having to go on blind dates that they set me up with?”
“Yeah but you have a choice right now to say yes or no. What if next time you don’t get so lucky and they get fed up with you having to constantly reject every single one, and they force you into a marriage without your consent?”
You stilled, staring at Aera’s joyful face. Irene was right. There was a chance that you might not be lucky one day and be forced into a marriage without love. But you wanted to trust your parents that they’d let you choose your partner, no matter how long it’d take.
- ❀ -
You drove to your next blind date a few days later. Your hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as you ground your teeth, remembering back to your parents’ words the previous night. Even though your head was heated, you tried to focus on the calming music that played from the audio system in your car, safely driving down the streets without any road rage.
You parked the car in the near vacant lot and stepped out. The date was held yet again at a luxurious restaurant and you sighed.
At least it’s not as expensive looking like the past ones, you thought.
You grasped the golden handle and pushed it open. The lighting wasn’t too bright, just dim enough to create a cozy ambiance.
“Hello madam, are you F/N L/N?” The male inquired.
Bewildered, you nodded. “Yes. How did you know?”
He smiled politely. “The entire restaurant is currently booked for Mister Jung Jaehyun.”
You looked around and indeed found it unoccupied of customers, only spotting a male figure at the opposite end of the place, his back facing you at a table.
“Please come this way.”
You followed, your legs becoming heavier with every step and your heart pounded in your chest.
Please let everything go well with him, you prayed silently.
The server pulled out your chair and you sat down without giving your date a glance. Once you were settled, you then looked up and your breathing halted momentarily.
His soft eyes were trained on you, along with a smile accompanied by dimples so handsome that you almost swooned.
But good looks aren’t going to mean anything if there’s no love, you thought.
“It’s really nice to meet you, Y/N,” he greeted warmly.
You forced a smile out of courtesy. “Same here, Jaehyun.”
- ❀ -
“So how’s Jaehyun?” your mother asked with an vibrant smile.
You sighed. “Okay I guess.”
“So it’s a yes then,” your father stated.
You almost glared at him. “The date was okay. I didn’t feel anything with him.” Your palms were clenched tightly while you tried to slow your breathing down.
“Oh sweetie, you don’t have to feel anything for him. Love doesn’t have to happen right now. And Jaehyun’s a good boy. I’m sure he’ll make you happy,” your mother said.
You groaned quietly. “What if love never happens? He can’t make me happy if I don’t love him.”
“Your mother and I didn’t have any love in the beginning, but we learned to care for each other.”
“Caring is not the same as love.”
His hard gaze was locked on you. “It is.”
Grinding your teeth, you could never beat your father with his words.
Your father mentioned beforehand that if the date with Jaehyun also failed, then he was going to force you in a relationship with a man that you wouldn’t see until the day of the wedding. This meant that you were now, technically, arranged to marry Jaehyun.
You were at an age where your friends and relatives were already married, even having children. Your parents viewed societal expectations more important than your own, and so that resulted in you having to go on numerous blind dates with you fully prepared to turn down every single guy no matter what. You wanted to marry someone that you would love, and all the dates that your parents had set you up with were of men that met their ideal type as their future son-in-law.
The date with Jaehyun felt more awkward than with any previous ones. That was because with Jaehyun, you weren’t just there ready to reject him in the face as politely as possible, but you were trying to accept him as your future husband. While that would be something teenage you would squeal about in high school, you cringed greatly at that in your twenties. Your teenage self always dreamt of a grand wedding with the love of your life. But growing up, you accepted the reality. Not everyone was lucky to meet their love and the fact that you hadn’t met yours made you pessimistic.
Pessimistic that love wasn’t written in your fate.
So far, Jaehyun did seem like an okay guy and you could only wish that your feelings would grow for him, especially before the marriage date. Nothing about him upon first meeting had you dreading of a thing that you didn’t like in him. But... “Can I please seriously ask you something without you two being biased?”
Your parents looked a each other, embracing themselves for what you had to inquire. “Sure sweetie, what is it?”
You gulped down the bump forming in your throat. “What if I find out something bad about him before the wedding, or something I don’t like in him? Do I have to force myself to be with him still?” you asked with a puppy look to make your parents grow soft for you and agree.
A brief silence was what you were met with as they silently conversed with one another through their eyes. Your father released a long breath afterwards. “You have up until the time before the wedding invitations are distributed to give me a reason why you shouldn’t marry Jaehyun. And it must be a valid reason.”

“Tae, are you even listening to me?”
His gaze was lowered onto the floating strawberries that swam around in his drink. “Yeah I am.” He took a long sip and smiled, humming in satisfaction. “Are you going to eat your pastry?”
You crossed your arms and leaned back in your seat. “You’re clearly not. My future is on the line and you want my pastry? You’re not even reacting to whatever I’m saying.”
He lifted his doe eyes onto you. “I am. But based on whatever you just said, the date didn’t sound like it went necessarily bad. All that happened was small talk and you two were silent most of the time.”
Your jaw dropped. “So now your gonna be on my parents’ side? Just because we were mostly silent doesn’t mean it didn’t go bad. What if we’re going to be like this after marriage? I can’t handle this awkwardness, Tae!”
“I’m not saying that I’m siding with your parents but give Jaehyun a chance. It was only the first meeting so obviously it’s going to feel awkward. Plus, based on the picture you showed me, he’s good looking.”
You blinked. “So?”
He shrugged, looking innocently at you. “Cute babies?”
“Shut up Lee Taeyong!”
He laughed, his head falling backward.
You sighed. “I can’t believe this. Why am I being forced into a marriage? Can’t they let me choose my partner?”
“They have been letting you for years, but you kept putting it off, Y/N.”
“Because I didn’t find the love of my life? I don’t like my parents’ choices where they always choose the one with money. I don’t want to marry a guy who’s only good with first impression but ends up being boring after marriage. I wanna meet someone like you, Tae. You’re so easy to love.”
Taeyong giggled. “I’m sure there are better guys out there than me.”
You rolled your eyes. “Please, you’re literally like the biggest cutest sweetheart on earth. I can’t even imagine someone beating your level. Irene is so lucky. If you didn’t fall in love with her, I would have asked for your hand in marriage,” you joked.
He shook his head, laughing hard. “Stop! You’re too much, Y/N. But don’t assume that all guys your parents try to set you up with are going to be boring. You don’t know the charms that Jaehyun’s carrying and before you know it, you’ll be falling for him.”
You sighed heavily. “Sounds too good to be true.”
He smiled sincerely. “Leave it up to your fate.” He looked behind you at the display case of the various baked goods before looking at your untouched pastry again. “So are you eating that or not?”
A smile tugged at your lips and you pushed your plate towards him. “Eat up. You need it more than me to keep up with the little angels in your home.”
After Taeyong devoured the chocolate tart, you both stepped out of the coffee shop with plans of heading over to the movies.
“I wish Irene could come with us, but the kids...” you trailed off.
Aera was only 9 months old and there was no way that little bundle would sit quietly for two hours unless she dozed off. Even if the problem was solved with Aera, Jinae was a year older and she was quite a curious and an energetic one. Though not more than Chunghee, the 4-year-old boy who was at the perfect age to be labeled as the troublemaker in the household.
“When I watch over the kids, you and Irene can have your girls night out. Or day, whatever time of the day it is.”
“Please make a vlog. I wanna see you struggle.”
Taeyong laughed. “Sorry to disappoint you but they love me more than Irene so they’re always listening to me.”
You rolled your eyes. “Maybe they’re scared of you.”
He clicked his tongue. “I’m sure they’re scared of Irene.”
You giggled. “I can see that being the case more.”
After paying for the tickets, you and Taeyong walked in the direction of the designated auditorium. Halfway through, Taeyong halted. “Awe man!”
“What is it?”
“I want sweet potato chips. But the vending machines aren’t here anymore,” he pouted.
You pondered for a bit, recalling back to the food counter by the entrance. “I think I saw them selling it at the front.”
His eyes brightened. “Really? Okay stay right here. I’ll be back soon.” He sprinted off in the next second, leaving you amused by his usual childlike behaviour. You pulled your phone out to entertain yourself for the time being.
“Y/N?” A deep voice called out your name and you looked up to find the man that you were unexpectedly seeing for the second time. Your body tensed hearing his voice again, and your heart skipped a beat when your eyes landed on his outfit. It was nice to see Jaehyun wear denim, something outside of the formal attire at the restaurant. In his hands was a container full of popcorn.
“Oh Jaehyun. What a surprise,” you awkwardly chuckled.
He grinned at you. “It is. Are you here alone?”
You shook your head. “No, my friend went to get some snacks. Are you?”
“My friend had to go do something. I was waiting for him until I saw you from the distance.”
Right on cue, a tall man appeared beside Jaehyun and genuinely smiled at you. “Oh, hi there. I’m Johnny.”
You gave him a tight smile. “I’m Y/N.”
His eyes went wide. “Y/N?” He turned to Jaehyun and repeated. “Y/N?” Johnny raised his eyebrows incredulously. He received a nod from Jaehyun and faced you again. “Oh my goodness. I heard about you and it’s seriously a pleasure to meet you.”
“Huh?”
He laughed at your puzzled expression while Jaehyun avoided your gaze nervously, his cheeks dusting pink. “It’s nice to see Jaehyun talk about something other than his work. He’s so devoted to his work that he sometimes forgets to chill out.”
Your heart fell at his words.
Devoted to his work.
You were not into men who were so passionate about their work that they’d forget about their well being. And not just well being, but they’d spend less time with their significant other.
Taeyong used to be like that until Irene was diagnosed with postpartum depression. He then took time off from work for Irene’s recovery. With his full attention on her and taking care of their first-born, Irene fully recovered with the prescribed treatments and Taeyong’s love, and you were relieved that the illness didn’t come back with Jinae and Aera.
You weren’t necessarily afraid of what happened to Irene. Taeyong had to get back to work after Irene’s recovery and they were able to pull through because there was love and understanding between them. There was no love between you and Jaehyun, and so your relationship, whatever little there was, had to depend on understanding one another. And that was going to be difficult when you weren’t interested in the man.
You pursed your lip, anxiously waiting for your friend’s return.
And finally he did with three bags of chips in his arms. “Sorry I took long. Oh! Jaehyun, right? Hi, I’m Taeyong. And you must be his friend, am I right?” he asked the taller one, shaking his hand.
“Yes, the name is Johnny. Nice to meet you, Taeyong. And boy, you have some strength.” Johnny was always the one with the most amount of strength. Therefore, having to meet someone who possessed nearly the same amount was impressive to him.
Taeyong chuckled. “Well I definitely do need it when having to look after my kids.”
It was a coincidence that the other two were there to watch the same movie as you. Taeyong suggested for them to sit with you two, and you sent your friend a small glare to which he responded with a smirk.
That was how you ended up sitting beside Taeyong and Jaehyun, squirming a little in your seat. During the advertisements, you noticed a popcorn container being offered to you by none other than your future husband. And you felt a slight pang in your heart.
“Sorry but I don’t like popcorn,” you admitted.
He was taken aback slightly before nodding and placed his popcorn on his lap, all while avoiding your gaze. You felt a bit bad. He was trying to be nice to you, but you weren’t going to force yourself to eat something that you weren’t a fan of.
Right after, Taeyong offered you his snack. You loved sweet potato chips, being the one to actually introduce it to your friend and you were proud to have him addicted to them. You took hold of the bag entirely, hearing a whine from him. You munched on the chips and hummed happily.
Jaehyun observed this and felt a stab of jealousy.

“Jinae!” you beamed at the little girl waddling up to your open arms. You picked her up and swung her around in circles, making her laugh cheerfully.
“Wow Jinae, you really betrayed papa for Y/N auntie,” Taeyong sulked.
You stuck your tongue out playfully at him and pecked Jinae on her squishy cheek.
Chunghee ran up to his dad, crying with teary eyes. “Aigoo, what happened?” Taeyong kneeled down to meet his son’s level.
“Mama force me fruits!” he wailed.
Taeyong closed his eyes. “I should have known Ten uncle was going to be a bad influence on you,” he muttered.
“I can’t believe you trusted Ten with Chunghee. Wasn’t it only for an hour?”
He nodded in response and wiped the little boy’s tears away, kissing his forehead and picking him up with his strong arms. He carried Chunghee off to the bedroom while you sat down on the couch with Jinae in your lap.
“Don’t become like your brother and eat fruits, okay? Don’t stress your papa out.”
“Eung,” she responded in promise. You smiled at her and ruffled her hair, earning a smile from the baby.
Your phone vibrated in your pocket, moving Jinae down beside you. You pulled it out that displayed Jaehyun’s name on the screen. Right after the movie ended, you bid Jaehyun and his friend a quick bye and dragged Taeyong out the theaters, not giving a chance for small talk.
You hesitantly answered the call and pressed the phone against your ear. “Hello?”
“Hi Y/N,” he greeted softly. “Are you busy tomorrow?”
You chewed on your bottom lip, guessing where that question would lead to.
A date.
As much as you wanted to lie and avoid him, it ultimately wasn’t going to do any good for anyone, including yourself. Spending more time with him meant more opportunities to find a flaw in him.
“Um, yeah- I mean no! I’m not free- I mean I AM free... tomorrow. Haha.” You wanted to slap yourself in the head.
If it weren’t for the silence on both ends, you would have missed the almost inaudible giggle from him. “Can I come pick you up tomorrow around lunchtime? For a date?”
“Sure, yeah, sounds great,” you smiled awkwardly.
“Great. I’ll see you tomorrow, Y/N.”
Once the call ended, you were ready to chuck your phone across the room before tossing it next to you and slumped against the couch, physically cringing at how the conversation went. Jinae curiously watched you, her baby lips forming an ‘oh’ followed by her eyes crinkling in amusement.
- ❀ -
The doorbell rang to your home, which your mother giddily ran up to the front. A smiling Jaehyun was revealed on the other side who held a bouquet of warm-coloured flowers.
“Hello Mrs. L/N.”
“Jaehyun! Lovely to see you. Come on in now,” she ushered him inside.
Jaehyun’s eyes wandered around the interior design of the house, catching sight of the wall with framed photos of your life, ranging from your birth to your graduation. The smile tugging at his lips was enough to have your mother beam at him.
“Y/N has always been such as adorable girl. Isn’t she pretty?” She cooed at the pictures of little you laugh towards the camera, your pupils hidden behind your closed eyelids.
Jaehyun felt something in his heart. When he first saw you at the restaurant, he thought you were more beautiful in person. The surprise encounter at the movies had his heart skipping a beat. Standing in front of a collage containing various stages of your life made his heart flutter, feeling butterflies in his stomach. He really liked you and wished everything would go well with this marriage.
“She’s beautiful,” he replied with sparkling eyes.
You stood hidden away behind a wall, eavesdropping. To say you felt embarrassed was an understatement. You cringed on the inside every time someone walked into the house and stared at your pictures. You never liked the idea, but you didn’t have a say in it as it was your parents’ house after all.
To hear your future husband call you beautiful after seeing those photos had heat threatening to burn your cheeks and a warm feeling spread in your chest.
“Jaehyun, can I ask you something?” your mother asked.
“Of course.”
She swallowed before parting her lips. “You see, Y/N’s been trying to put off her marriage for a while and I’m not sure exactly how she’s treating you.”
He nodded, comprehending her words clearly. During the first date, he noticed your jitteriness and near lack of liveliness to continue the conversation as if you weren’t interested in him at all, and that hurt him. To see you interact with your friend in a brighter manner made him jealous. Jealous that you wouldn’t see him like the way you would with Taeyong. Though he understood that your relationship with him was new and he was willing to give you all the time you needed to become comfortable with him one day.
“While her father and I made her give you a chance, you’re not obligated to be forced into this marriage if you’re not happy. If you ever want to back out, I ask you to do it only because you’re feeling that way. Not because of Y/N. I really think you’re a perfect match for her and I’m sure it’ll take time before you can fully win her heart.”
You gulped upon hearing your mother say all that to Jaehyun. This meant that if Jaehyun didn’t like something about you, he could back out of the alliance. Your brain celebrated in near victory that it wasn’t going to be a fully forced marriage, as both the bride- and groom-to-be had your voices free, increasing the chances for either of you to call off the wedding.
“I understand. Don’t worry. I’ll take good care of Y/N,” Jaehyun assured.
You stepped out, walking up to where they both stood. He caught sight of you and sent you a charming smile, his dimples on full display.
You on the other hand grew curious of the bouquet in his grasp. He realized what you were staring at and grew flustered.
“Oh sorry!” He seemed like he was in a dilemma, whether to hand the bunch over to you or your mother, opting for the latter. “I-I brought these for your home,” he stuttered with the tips of his ears turning red.
Your mother giggled at his behaviour. “Oh thank you, Jaehyun. I thought you were giving those to Y/N. Seems like you got distracted by pictures of baby Y/N,” she teased.
Both yours and Jaehyun’s cheeks burned at your mother’s words.
After saying bye to your mother, Jaehyun beat you to opening the passenger door, holding it wide open for you to get in. You thanked him with a tight smile.
He had one hand on the steering wheel while the other fumbled around with the stereo, a song played softly in the background as he focused both on the road and on your tensed figure.
“I know this ramen place if you’re interested,” he spoke after some time.
You remembered mentioning to him in your small talk that you loved to eat ramen. Having him remembering the small detail made you feel a spark inside. “Ramen sounds great.” And what felt like the first time when being with Jaehyun, a small smile slowly spilled onto your face, not going unnoticed by the one beside you.
After two sets of bowls arrived at your table, your eyes drunk in the beautiful arrangement of the toppings on the noodles. You were about to pick up your chopsticks until Jaehyun stopped you. “Don’t touch yours just yet.”
You blinked at him confusedly yet stilled.
Grabbing his chopsticks in each hand, he worked with his bowl, mixing the pieces of vegetables and meats into the broth, folding the noodles on top. Once done, he laid down the chopsticks in its holder and switched his touched bowl with your untouched one.
You stared at your meal, surprised that such a simple action had your insides squealing with a fuzzy feeling. “Thank you,” you muttered, a bashful smile tugging at your lips.
He felt pleased with himself to make you feel that way and hoped he could continue doing so in the future. “No problem.”
Both of you dug into your noodles, slurped up the remaining broth once finished. You were glad that Jaehyun brought you for a casual lunch where you didn’t have to worry about manners and etiquettes as that sort of stuff did not go with ramen.
He later suggested a walk in the park in order to digest your full bellies. The weather was perfect, the sun blazing down onto your head and you were glad to have chosen a light-coloured outfit. Summer was nearing and soon enough, you were craving for a frozen dessert.
“Do you want something refreshing?” Jaehyun asked, almost like he read your thought.
“That sounds nice. Ice cream?” You pointed at the ice cream stall from afar.
He followed your finger and turned back to you, dimples reappearing. “Sure. Let’s go.”
Both your steps were synced, and he craved to hold your dangling hand. Craved to have his first ever physical touch with you. But he was worried if it was too soon and clenched his hands into fists to stop himself.
Approaching the stall, you read the long list of flavours, cheering internally when reading your favourites. “I’ll have a scoop of cherry and green tea each.”
Jaehyun turned to you with a look of mild surprise. “You like green tea?”
His face was unreadable so you couldn’t figure out whether he liked that or not. “Yeah, I love green tea. Why?”
He blinked before forming a blinding smile. “I love green tea too.”
After the ice cream date, Jaehyun drove you back home, parking his car in front of your house. He was surprised to see his parents’ vehicle in the driveway. “My parents are here.”
You nodded wordlessly. Your parents didn’t mention anything about a meet up between the two families. They only knew that you were going out with Jaehyun. “Let’s both go in.”
When you strolled into the living room with Jaehyun behind you, laughter was heard as the folks shared stories of you two.
“What’s going on?” you asked.
The eyes of a woman, who you assumed was Jaehyun’s mother, lightened up. “Oh Y/N! It’s so nice to finally meet you.” She pulled you into a crushing hug, which you tried to reciprocate with your locked arms.
“Same here,” you chuckled breathlessly.
She pulled back and beamed at you, eager to spill the breaking news. “We finalized your engagement date.”
All the colour had drained from your face and you took a quick side glance at your parents. They knew that you weren’t going to be happy with the news and had hidden it from you. “When?” you asked.
You were somewhat glad that the woman in front of you didn’t notice your fallen face. “In two weeks. And after that happens, we’ll decide on the marriage date.”
This was happening way too fast for your liking. Even though it was just an engagement, why were they so eager for it to happen quickly? “Isn’t two weeks a little too early? We’re still trying to get to know each other,” you reasoned.
Your future mother-in-law’s excitement didn’t falter the slightest bit. “Nonsense. I’ve heard that this is your third time seeing each other. And I’m sure that if you keep meeting up, you’ll have a better idea of each other by the time of the engagement. Plus, the date falls on my birthday and it would mean the world if my gift happened to be my son’s and future daughter-in-law’s engagement.”
You understood her feelings, and she was right. Two weeks should give you a better idea of Jaehyun, give you time to grow your feelings for him if you could. And it was only an engagement. A marriage in two weeks would have been more devastating.
You stared long at your father, silently pleading for him to still remember the condition set. Sensing that he knew what your eyes were trying to convey, he simply gave you a curt nod. Meanwhile, Jaehyun met your mother’s hopeful gaze, who offered him a tight smile, wishing that everything would go well between him and her daughter. You noticed your mother’s eyes being trained behind you and turned to the man. He observed the worried expression plastered on your face, his heart breaking a little at the thought of you not being excited for the marriage like the way he was.

“Y/N! Please be our angel and help us out,” Taeyong pleaded over the phone.
“Of course I will. Why wouldn’t I?”
A moment of silence before he replied, “Because of what I’m about to suggest to you?”
After the phone call ended, you lied down on your bed, not believing your fate. Though it wasn’t actually all fate. This was Taeyong partly trying to play cupid.
Both Taeyong and Irene had to go out of town for the entire weekend, including their parents. But children were not allowed at the event, and their babysitter also happened to fall ill, leaving them with no other backup than have you look after the three children. You had never taken care of three children at once and he knew you were going to need a helping hand. And that was when Taeyong suggested that you babysat the three with Jaehyun.
Your fingers hovered over the screen before pressing on Jaehyun’s number. You had met up with him the past week, for casual hangouts and meals. Yet nothing much had happened in terms of you growing feelings for the said man. The engagement was exactly a week away, and you accepted your fate of having to wear a silver ring as you failed to find a flaw in him.
“Y/N?” Jaehyun sounded quite surprised that you called him for the very first time when it had always been him initiating it.
“Haha yes, it’s me.” You really wanted to hit yourself for still sounding awkward with him. “I actually called to ask you... like are you busy this weekend? I mean including overnight.”
“No, I’m not busy. What is it?”
“Are you okay to babysit kids with me?”
“Kids? Well yes, but whose kids are you talking about?” Jaehyun was ecstatic to spend the weekend with you, even if it meant having to look after some children. He was good with children and hoped he could get closer to you through this.
“They’re Taeyong’s kids. Remember Taeyong the one you met at the movies? Him and his wife are going to be away for the weekend, and he asked me to babysit them with you because there’s three of them. It’s for two days and we’ll have to stay at their house overnight. Is that okay?”
I am more than okay with the plan! Jaehyun thought. But to not scare you, he pushed down the excitement bubbling in his chest and calmly answered, “Yeah that’s fine. No worries.”
- ❀ -
Before you could even ring the bell, the door opened, revealing an overly joyful Taeyong. He threw himself on you, hugging you tightly and you laughed at him. He did the same to Jaehyun, flustering him greatly. “Thank you so much for coming, Jaehyun. Come in and leave your bags over here.”
Putting down your duffel bag to the side, you found Irene sitting on the couch with Aera in her baby walker. The baby squealed upon seeing you, bouncing on her tiny knees. “Hi Jaehyun. Thank you so much for helping out. I’m Irene.”
Jaehyun smiled at her. “Nice to meet you, Irene. And it’s no problem at all.” Taeyong led Jaehyun to the kitchen to explain the procedures that you had already memorized from the numerous times you had visited them.
“You two are literally our lifesavers,” Irene said to you.
You laughed. “It’s nothing. I’m sure it’s going to be fun with the kids.” And not as awkward with Jaehyun around, you thought.
She shook her head. “We’re leaving you two with a challenge, and Chunghee is going to be a real troublemaker for that.”
After an hour later, Taeyong and Irene finally left after placing a ton of kisses all over their youngest daughter. Aera was the only one awake at that time while the other two slept. Once you locked the door, you turned around to find Jaehyun introducing himself to the little one.
“Hi Aera, my name is Jaehyun, but you can call me Jae uncle. Let’s be friends, hmm?” Aera bounced on her knees again, beaming at him and did her signature baby laugh.
The adorable interaction between Jaehyun and the baby girl made your heart melt.
Shortly before a loud wail was heard down the far end of the hall.
“Oh that sounds like Jinae. I’ll go get her,” you said. Jaehyun gave you a nod complemented with a smile. Aera let out a high-pitched shriek to grab the uncle’s attention again.
On your way to Jinae, Chunghee sprinted past you into the living room, his doe eyes searching for his parents and instead was met with an unknown man sitting beside his sister.
“You must be Chunghee, right?” The little boy nodded with confusion written on his face. “I’m Jaehyun. Jae uncle you can call me.”
“Where’s mama and papa?”
“They already left. They’ll be back tomorrow.”
Chunghee hummed and walked over to the uncle, sitting beside his sister. “Are you auntie’s boyfwiend?” he asked.
The curiosity had pink paint over Jaehyun’s cheeks. He didn’t know what to call the relationship to a four-year-old. “Not boyfriend exactly but we’re getting married.”
Chunghee blankly stared at Jaehyun. “Do you like each other?”
Jaehyun’s breathing halted for a second. “Um, yeah but not really. I mean- I like her, but I don’t know what she feels.”
You walked back in the room, noticing a calm Chunghee trying to process something into his small developing brain, while Jaehyun sat with a faint blush covering his cheeks. Jinae had stopped crying as soon as her little eyes landed on you and fell back to sleep in your arms. You gently laid Jinae down on the couch and recalled the first mission that your friends gave you.
Have Jinae and Chunghee eat fruits.
Jinae was sleeping soundlessly so that meant Chunghee was going to be the first one to eat them, and that was the real mission.
“I’ll cut up some snacks,” you said.
Jaehyun got up to his feet. “I’ll cut them. You can relax with them.” He knew what snacks you were referring to, sending you a comforting smile before dashing off to the kitchen.
“Auntie?” Chunghee called out.
“Hm?”
“Do you like uncle?”
Flustered, you asked, “Why are you asking me that?”
“Uncle like you. But he not boyfwiend. And you gonna marry him.”
What?
Jaehyun liked you?
“Jaehyun uncle told you this?”
He nodded.
Jaehyun likes you, you thought repeatedly in your head.
But it didn’t mean anything when you didn’t feel the same way.
After a few minutes, the said man returned with a plate of fruit varieties chopped up into small pieces. “Okay Chunghee, eat up.” He placed the plate on the foam mat covering the floor, away from Aera in case her baby walker bulldozed over the snacks.
The little boy huffed and crossed his tiny arms. “No fruits!”
“It’s going to be difficult feeding him fruits. We’ll have to figure out a way to get him desperate to eat them,” you mentioned. You picked up this idea from a movie you watched a while back and the tactic worked on the child in the film.
Jaehyun nodded and in a gentle tone told Chunghee, “I’ll keep this out in case you change your mind and become hungry. Okay?”
“But you’re not going to get any other food until you eat these,” you added sternly, hoping the strictness in your voice would have Chunghee obey.
Chunghee’s scowl faltered, not believing your words. “You won’t do that,” he responded but there was a hint of shakiness in his words.
Jaehyun went with your flow. “We don’t want to but we’ll have to,” he ended the supposed scary words with a smile to not scare the little boy too much.
The rest of the day went on with Jinae getting along well with Jaehyun, Aera sleeping shortly, and Chunghee frowning. He was the only one remaining who hadn’t touched the fruits yet and you grew concerned. Dinnertime was fast approaching and if the boy didn’t get a proper meal, then he was going to throw a tantrum.
Jaehyun offered to cook for everyone and you were surprised that he took up the task solely. “Are you sure? I can help,” you offered.
He hesitated for a moment, thinking about something briefly before he raised his hand to cup your face delicately, smiling at you. “Don’t worry. I got this,” he breathed out quietly. He retracted his and made his way towards the kitchen. Little did both of you know the true effect that the small touch had on the other, both of your hearts beating erratically as Jaehyun hurriedly hid in the kitchen while you stood frozen in your spot.
Four bowls of food were set on the table. For you, Jaehyun, Jinae, and Aera (though baby safe).
“Woa!” Jinae exclaimed before digging into her food with her baby chopsticks. Jaehyun began feeding Aera spoonfuls in the form of an airplane swooshing in the air, making Aera squeal joyfully. You stifled back a laugh from how funny Jaehyun looked doing that.
Hearing a faint grumble beside you, you anxiously glanced at Chunghee. The plate consisting of his share of fruits was left abandoned in the living room. “Where’s my food?” he asked.
“You know the deal. First fruits, then food,” you answered.
Chunghee couldn’t believe his ears. His parents had always given up eventually, no matter how hard they tried to get him to eat the naturally sweet products. “I. Want. Food!” he screamed.
This caused Aera to start crying and Jinae to stop eating her food altogether. You gave Jinae a side hug, rubbing her arm and let out a deep sigh. “Chunghee, if you’re going to keep this up, go into the living room. Let your sisters eat. It’s not their fault that you don’t want to eat something that Jinae already had.”
Tears welled up in the boy’s eyes. “You’re so mean!” he yelled and ran into the said room.
Jaehyun wiped Aera’s tears away and picked her up to soothe her, calmly her down shortly. “We’ll have to think of something else,” he told you.
“I don’t understand why Chunghee has such a huge problem with fruits,” you spoke. “He became like this ever since Ten looked after him one time.”
Jaehyun took in what you said, his mind raking up on a solution. “I think I can figure this problem out. Can you feed Aera while I go see him?”
You nodded. “Of course.”
Jaehyun found the little boy whimpering quietly as he hugged his legs to his chest. Chunghee’s sad eyes made Jaehyun feel a twinge in his heart. If there was something else behind it like a fear, he would have opted for a better solution.
Jaehyun sat down beside him. “I’m sorry,” he spoke tenderly.
The boy stayed put and sniffed, letting tears slide down his reddened cheeks. Jaehyun wiped his tears away with his thumbs.
“What’s wrong, Chunghee? Why won’t you eat fruits?”
Chunghee was still upset with his auntie and uncle, and so he didn’t respond back.
“How can I help you if you don’t tell me? Did Ten uncle say something bad about it?”
Those words stirred something inside the boy and he let his guard down. “Yeah,” he mumbled.
Bullseye. Jaehyun felt like he was close to solving the problem. “What did he say?”
Chunghee finally looked at the uncle with glistening eyes and answered, “Fruits will grow in my stomach.”
Fruits...
What?
Bewildered Jaehyun tried to compose himself before confirming. “So you won’t eat fruits because you’re scared that fruits will grow in your stomach?”
A nod.
Jaehyun faced away from the naïve boy and a smile threatened to spill onto his face. He was amused by the boy’s innocent fear, but at the same time he wanted to meet this Ten guy and smack him for installing the fear into the poor child. He turned serious again and softly said, “Chunghee, don’t worry because that’s not true. If it was, wouldn’t everyone be scared to eat it? Auntie and I wouldn’t have eaten it earlier if that was true. You saw us eat it, right?”
A glimmer of hope sparkled in his doe eyes. “It’s not?”
He smiled. “It’s not.”
“But seeds...”
“Yes, there are fruit seeds that you shouldn’t eat. But if you accidentally eat those, then they’ll come out of you when you go for a potty,” Jaehyun said, ruffling the boy’s hair. A smile finally emerged onto the little boy’s face and they laughed. “So are you going to trust us and your parents now to eat fruits?”
Chunghee hopped off the couch and grabbed the abandoned plate, at last popping a piece of chopped strawberry into his mouth. “I will.”
You were shocked to say the least for the boy to have finished up all the remaining fruits and had his meal with his siblings. You gave Jaehyun a questioning look, to which he smiled and mouthed ‘later.’
After a bit of playing around to digest the meal, you tucked Jinae and Chunghee in bed and walked back into the living room and found Jaehyun carrying Aera in the baby carrier, soothing her to sleep. Aera’s bed was separate from her older siblings as she needed more attention from adults. Thus, her bed was in the same room as Taeyong’s and Irene’s.
You thought back to your day spent with Jaehyun and the kids, amazed by how great Jaehyun was with small children. From looking after Aera to playing with Jinae to making Chunghee eat fruits. He really was going to be a great father one day. But was he going to be the father of your children?
Cute babies. Taeyong’s words echoed in your head.
With Jaehyun’s looks, there was no doubt about that. But did you really care about that? No. All babies were adorable no matter what.
Uncle like you. Chunghee’s words rang in your head just then, and you didn’t realize you were staring at him until he stared back at you, shaking you out of your thoughts. Clearing your throat, you spoke up an issue. “So Taeyong and Irene only have one bed, same room as Aera’s so...” you trailed off, not sure how Jaehyun was going to take that in.
He nodded, not displaying any emotions. “I can sleep on the couch here. You can take the bed.”
Your eyes widened. “No! I didn’t mean- I mean... we should probably start becoming comfortable with each other, you know?”
His lips formed a small ‘oh.’ “Are you sure you’re okay with it?” He didn’t want you to force yourself and feel uneasy.
This was your future husband for goodness sake. You had to become comfortable with him at one point in your life. “Yeah, I feel like I can trust you, especially since Aera will be in the same room too. Haha.” There you went sounding awkward again.
Jaehyun bit back a smile and nodded. “As long as you’re okay with it.”
In the bedroom, Jaehyun carefully laid sleeping Aera in her bed while you settled yourself on one side of the bed, facing away from Jaehyun’s side. You were glad that your friends selected a king-sized bed, giving you ample of space to maintain a comfortable distance from him. Jaehyun got under the shared blanket and before he switched off the nightlamp, he softly called for you. “Y/N?”
“Hm?”
He silently drunk in the scene in his view. You next to him, a baby in her own bed, almost like a small family ready to doze off to dreamland. He wished this was what his future would look like, though only with you in it. “I really like you, Y/N,” he confessed and right away turned off the remaining light source, leaving your heart to hammer loudly in the dark.

“Papa!” Chunghee ran into Taeyong’s open arms.
“My baby! Mwah,” Taeyong smooched the boy’s cheek with a wet kiss, making Chunghee shriek and run away.
Aera beamed in your arms upon seeing her mama’s face, making Irene take hold of the youngest and planted a haste kiss on her forehead.
Jinae waddled up to her papa, babbling for him to do the same with her as her super tiny arms rose up, asking to be picking up. Taeyong laughed and submitted, smooching a huge kiss onto her chubby cheek.
“How did it go? I hope the kids didn’t trouble you too much,” Irene said.
Jaehyun shook his head. “They didn’t trouble us. We managed to get Chunghee to eat fruits.”
Shock registered on Taeyong and Irene. “Did you just say Chunghee ate fruits?” Irene asked.
Chunghee beamed. “I did mama!”
Taeyong nodded his head slowly, letting the news settle in his brain. “Let me take you two out. As thanks for babysitting them and completing the mission.”
- ❀ -
Taeyong drove you and Jaehyun to his favourite coffee shop, the one you frequently visited with him that sold the most delectable pastries.
“I cannot believe I didn’t think about him having a fear, which makes sense because Ten also has a fear,” Taeyong said and took a bite of his strawberry Danish.
“Does Ten have the same fear?” Jaehyun asked.
You shook your head. “Nope. Apparently for Ten, it’s because fruits just look scary. I kind of find it funny that Ten thought of the whole seed thing and it grows in your stomach. It sounds so real and I’m sure a lot of people had that thought once in their life.”
Taeyong stopped chewing, a thought clicking to him. “You know Ten isn’t exactly wrong.”
Both you and Jaehyun stared at Taeyong, waiting for him to elaborate.
“How else do you make babies?”
“Lee Taeyong!” you yelled and slammed your hands on the table out of sheer embarrassment.
His laughter resonated in the café while Jaehyun’s cheeks burned red.
You grabbed Taeyong’s strawberry acai lemonade, taking huge sips of it as retribution. He whined and successfully retrieved it from you, shielding his body with it so that you wouldn’t steal it from him again.
You pouted. “Hey! I want some too!”
Taeyong took a quick glance at the silent one across from you, noting how Jaehyun’s eyes were masked with a hint of jealousy as he watched you be your playful self with your friend. Taeyong then met your eyes and nodded in Jaehyun’s direction. You frowned, not understanding what he was trying to hint at you. He casted his eyes on Jaehyun’s drink and later raised his own to take a sip. That was when it clicked you.
Your lips parted in surprise and turned to focus on the man across from you. His eyes were trained on swirling his drink with the straw. You cleared your throat, hoping you weren’t going to sound awkward. And of course, you failed. “Um, Jaehyun, can I um... try your drink?”
Jaehyun froze and lifted his gaze slowly. “Yeah of course,” he replied quietly and pushed his drink in your direction. You pressed your lips together on the straw, sipping the iced caramel macchiato. “Mmm,” you moaned. “This tastes better than Taeyong’s.”
“Hey! Don’t insult my drink!”
You laughed and stuck your tongue out at him while Jaehyun stared at you with a growing tender smile, super pleased that you liked his drink.

[Two months later]
For the long weekend ahead of you, Taeyong and Irene planned a trip for you and Jaehyun to a rental vacation home. Now that you were engaged, Taeyong reasoned that a bachelor and bachelorette trip was a must. You were super grateful that your two friends also tagged along after dropping the kids off at Taeyong’s parents’ house.
It had been over a month ever since the engagement and even more hangouts, yet you still felt a little awkward with Jaehyun. After all, he was the man that you were eventually getting married to and you didn’t have any strong feelings of love for him.
Even if you did, you didn’t realize it.
Once arriving at the vacation home in the rental car, you were stunned by its exterior design. The neatly trimmed grass with small evergreen shrubs ran along the edges of the huge light up swimming pool, located off to the side from the entrance. The pool was surrounded by floor-to-ceiling rooms of the house, giving a few rooms a full view of the amenity. Even though you weren’t a fan of luxury, spending three days at that specific rental home sounded exciting.
The interior was just as jaw-dropping as the exterior and you spent the next few minutes walking around, familiarizing with the layout and where everything was located. Your friends and your fiancé were already sitting in the living room.
“This place is so cool!” you grinned.
“I’m glad you love it. Irene found this so it’s all thanks to her,” Taeyong said and pecked his wife on the cheek.
Irene squirmed. “Hey! Not in front of the kids!” she scolded her childlike husband.
You quirked an eyebrow up. “Excuse me? I am not a child.”
“You still are considered one until you’re married and have kids,” Taeyong stated.
You rolled your eyes at his words. He was right, and you felt like that with the way they treated you at times.
When the sun reached its peak midday, the four of you got into the vehicle and drove over to the closest supermarket with plans of stocking up on food and alcoholic drinks. You decided to split up into two groups, making Jaehyun hang around Taeyong while you walked with Irene.
Jaehyun pushed the cart into one of the aisles, containing a variety of pasta and sauces. “Can I make Italian for dinner tonight?” he asked.
Taeyong nodded. “Of course. Do you like Mexican? I can make that tomorrow.” Jaehyun nodded, giving him a weak smile. Taeyong noticed it and asked, “Is something wrong? It’s okay if you don’t like Mexican.”
Jaehyun stopped pushing the cart. “No, it’s not that. I...”
Taeyong waited patiently.
Jaehyun pressed his lips together before continuing. “I’ll tell you later.”
Meanwhile, you and Irene dumped whatever caught your sight into the cart.
“Y/N? Can I ask you something seriously?”
You let out a hum as a yes.
“How do you really feel about Jaehyun?”
You suddenly forgot how to read the labels on the shelves. Facing her, all that came out of your mouth was a ‘huh?’
Irene slowly repeated yourself, as if you had a hard time comprehending her words. “How do you feel with the engagement ring on your hand that Jaehyun put on? I’ve been seriously observing you the past months. Your actions, your words. Never do you talk about Jaehyun and you still act like you’re new with him.”
You blankly stared at the sparkling diamond ring resting on your third finger. Irene was right. You never talked about him, not giving him much of an interest. It was as if you had gotten used to having around him for the sake of your future being tied with his. “I don’t really know, Irene. I mean I do at times feel like I have a small crush on him. He is a good guy, but I don’t... I don’t know. Even though he already confessed to me that he likes me. Plus, he’s really calm...”
Irene was silent for a moment. “He is. But do you ever notice the way he’s like around you?”
You blinked confusedly. “What?”
“He’s always looking at you. I mean not in a creepy way. But he’s always smiling around you. Taeyong tells me how you don’t notice the little things with him and it sounds like Jaehyun gets jealous? Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves, expressing their love for their significant other. Jaehyun might not be obvious like Taeyong, but that doesn’t mean his love for you isn’t there.”
- ❀ -
Arriving back with the trunk full of groceries, it was finally time for Taeyong to have fun. Once all the groceries were put away in the kitchen, Taeyong sprinted out the glass doors, screaming high-pitched, and jumped into the swimming pool.
You laughed. “He really jumped in fully clothed.”
Irene sighed, walking over to him. “Sometimes I wonder if I’m a mother of four kids.” When Taeyong’s head popped up, she bent down close to the edge. “You should have at least changed into your swimming clothes,” she scolded.
With a mischievous glint in his eyes, he caught Irene off guard by pulling her into the water. She yelped, losing balance due to his strength, and felt the cold water hit her skin. “Taeyong! Are you crazy?” she yelled.
He laughed, pulling her into his arms. “I’m crazy for you, baby,” and smooched a wet kiss on her cheek.
You and Jaehyun ended up watching their adorable interaction from the sidelines of the pool and just then, Irene’s words voiced in your head.
Jaehyun might not be obvious like Taeyong, but that doesn’t mean his love for you isn’t there.
“Jaehyun?”
He turned to you. “Yes?”
“Do you know how to swim?”
He nodded. “Yeah I do.”
You pursed your lips. “I’m sorry.”
“For wha-”
You pushed him into the pool with all your strength, clutching your stomach as you laughed hard after he resurfaced. He gave you an amused smile with his hands on his hips. He loved that you were happily laughing at him, loved seeing you finally become playful with him.
“You know Y/N, it’s not fair that you’re the only one outside the pool,” Jaehyun teased you.
You agreed and backed up a few steps before running and jumping into the water. When your head resurfaced, you began splashing water on Jaehyun, to which he let out a hearty laugh and copied your actions.
Taeyong and Irene looked between you two in shock and then at each other. The husband took this opportunity to plant another huge fat kiss on his wife’s cheek, making her yelp again.
When the sky turned a shade darker and the hot humid air shifted slightly chillier, the four of you headed back inside to dry up. Of course, you were bound to share the bedroom with your fiancé, thankful of having previous experience with that. Jaehyun kindly let you use the room first, giving you privacy while he lazed on the outdoor chair, letting the sunset dry him up as much as it could before taking the matter in his own hands.
You stepped out of the ensuite bathroom, the covers of the floor-to-ceiling windows completely raised up and you spotted Jaehyun immediately. Knocking on the window, you got his attention right away and cued him that it was his turn.
Just like Jaehyun gave you privacy, you did the same for him.
You settled for the living room, the biggest area in the house. Taeyong and Irene were nowhere in sight, leaving you to entertain yourself. When you dug your hands into your pockets, you realized that your phone was forgotten in the bedroom.
If it was Irene or Taeyong in the room, you would have walked right in. But you stood outside the closed door, shifting on your feet and debating heavily as to what your next action should be. Knocking would be appropriate but this was your fiancé for heaven’s sake. You shouldn’t be knocking on the door for permission when this sort of thing was going to become a regular thing in the future.
You grabbed the doorknob, turning it clockwise and pushed it opened slightly. Your head peeked in, searching for him. When you couldn’t, thinking that he was already in the bathroom, you walked in cautiously. Right before you passed the bathroom, the door opened and out walked Jaehyun. His jeans and hair were still damp from the event earlier.
But what had you two react the way you did after was for the fact that he held his damp shirt in his hand, leaving his abs on fully display.
The speed at which both his and your eyes enlarged and twirled away from one another would make anyone think that both of you were not in a relationship. Let along engaged.
“Sorry. I didn’t know you were here,” he said and quickly put on his shirt. “I put my shirt on. You can turn around now.”
You let out an inaudible breath and turned, slightly disappointed to not see his abs anymore. “I’m sorry. I should have knocked but I thought... um...” You lost your words when a smile tugged at the ends of his lips.
“It’s okay. I’m glad you were comfortable enough to do that.”
You weren’t aware that your fiancé was in charge of dinner that night and was surprised to learn how much of a great chef Jaehyun was, even better than Taeyong as shocking as it sounded. Yes, he did cook before when babysitting but that was children-friendly, unlike the elegant cuisine of your favourite Italian dish that you had eaten in your first ever date with him.
- ❀ -
The next morning, you woke up feeling the bed occupied behind you. You stretched your limbs and turned around, suddenly forgetting how to breath when your eyes landed on Jaehyun’s sleeping face, facing in your direction. You wanted to touch his milky face, confirm whether it really was as soft as it seemed. His bare lips slightly parted and you wished to feel them on you.
Jaehyun felt a gaze on him and slowly fluttered his eyelids up. The eye contact had you jolt up from surprise while he stayed rooted in his lying position.
“I- I’m gonna go get ready,” you stuttered and bolted for the bathroom, locking the door behind you, and placed a hand over your racing heart.
Jaehyun sat up on the bed and smiled over how adorable you were. “Cute,” he whispered.
After breakfast, Taeyong and Jaehyun decided to go hiking nearby while you and Irene laid down on the outdoor lounge chairs, sprawling under the morning light.
The hiking trail was not too long and both men had reached the top in no time. Emerging from the trees, they were blessed by the breathtaking view of the mountains with a river that separated the mountains from where they stood. The morning birds chirped nearby, and the light breeze carried the echoes to their ears.
“Wow,” Jaehyun whispered. He felt as if a blanket was draped over him. A beautiful blanket consisting of your warmth.
“Beautiful, right?”
He nodded. “I wish Y/N and Irene came with us.”
“Same. I try to get Irene to come with me whenever I’d go hiking. But she would rather rest at home. I don’t blame her. Taking care of three small children is a lot.” Taeyong looked at the Jaehyun. “I don’t know how I survived all the times I had to do it by myself and Y/N always cracks jokes about me suffering.”
Jaehyun glanced at him with a small smile before turning back to the view.
Though Taeyong’s gaze was still locked on him. “Jaehyun?”
He took a deep breath, willing himself to take the time and ask your friend something that had been on his mind since the beginning. “How is Y/N so comfortable with you? I wish she could be like that with me.” Jaehyun was glad that he was starting to see you become comfortable with him during the trip. Even though it made his heart super happy, he craved for more from you.
Taeyong’s eyebrows raised up when finally learning the issue. “Well, that’s something that will depend on time. And the person too. When she first met me, I was a hot chubby mess, always clumsy and super clingy to my friends. I was naughty too, playful and pulling pranks. That’s how Y/N’s always seen me as since elementary school.”
The speed at which Jaehyun whipped his head to the man beside him had Taeyong chuckling. “Elementary... that long?” That all made sense to him. Being friends with Taeyong that long would only make you feel so at ease around him. And with that fact, another wave of jealousy hit him. How could Jaehyun beat that time before the marriage? Jaehyun was nowhere near Taeyong’s personality and he envied that to a great extent. On top of that, he didn’t want you to feel forced to marry him when you weren’t sure about it yourself.
A hand patted lightly on Jaehyun’s head. “Aigoo, is Jaehyunie jealous?” Taeyong teased.
Heat rose up to his cheeks, bluntly denying him, resulting in a roar of laughter from the married one.
“Don’t worry, Jaehyun. You’re a really good guy and I really think Y/N will like you back one day.” Sure, Taeyong was your best friend, but even he couldn’t figure out where a girl’s heart truly lied unless he had a chat with you. Regardless though, he would try to push you closer to Jaehyun, hoping that you’d break your assumed thoughts and give your fiancé a chance. A strong intuitive feeling of his told him that you and Jaehyun were destined to be together.
- ❀ -
Never Have I Ever.
That was a game that Taeyong had prepared for this trip. He had searched up a bunch of questions and written them down on a list of paper in case someone had a hard time to come up with a statement. The original game that he had planned included alcoholic drinks, but Irene had changed it to holding a hand up.
“Why? I wanted to drink!” Taeyong whined while wiggling in his seat.
Irene tsked. “Not right now. We’ll drink after dinner.”
He pouted, eventually agreeing with her words. Even though he was in charge of dinner that night, he couldn’t stop the desperate feeling of having one drink beforehand. “Okay, let’s start.” Taeyong spun an empty water bottle on the dining table and the opening pointed at Irene.
“Wow.” She picked up the list and scanned through the questions, immediately catching sight of one. “Never have I ever thrown a drink at someone,” she said and gave her husband an unamused look.
Only Taeyong raised his arm, knowing exactly what she was thinking about. And to his defense, he responded, “Come on, baby. You saw that guy! He was being rude to his mother. How could I not do anything?”
“But you could have talked it out. You didn’t have to throw your drink at him. We nearly got kicked out of the restaurant before we could even get our meal.”
“I would have made dinner for us then!”
“That’s not the point!”
“Okay guys, don’t fight,” you talked over them and grabbed the list from Irene, rolling your eyes at one of the questions. “Never have I ever fought in public.” You knew right away who were going to put up their hands.
Taeyong and Irene.
Irene crossed her arms. “Taeyong can get so childish when it comes to stuffed animals and chocolates that I have to nag him.”
Taeyong pouted. “Hey! At least I’m setting a good role model that adults should be child at heart, baby.”
But what you didn’t expect was that Jaehyun raised his hand up as well. “Well I wouldn’t say public like that, but I would hold onto my stand at work, which would raise some disputes. I know when to give up, but I can’t let a project go down the wrong path for the sake of maintaining peace in the company.”
You nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly with that, and you liked that thing about Jaehyun.
Taeyong grabbed the list from you, going next. “Never have I ever went on a solo vacation.” Taeyong never went on one, and wished he never did. Where was the fun when you weren’t on an adventure with someone?
Jaehyun was the sole person to raise his arm and you were aware of what he was implying to. He had informed you that he would be gone for some business in Paris a few weeks back and asked if you wanted to join him. Jaehyun felt bad for leaving you, but you spending a whole week in Paris with only him made your stomach lurch. Whether in a good way or bad, you didn’t know, thus rejecting his offer. You weren’t ready for such a stage in the relationship despite being newly engaged back then.
Pushing his broken heart aside, he explored the city in his free time. But he couldn’t stop thinking about you throughout the whole trip, even during the conferences that he was there for. Trips were something he used to enjoy solely. But after meeting you, he would have liked them better if he was with you.
He pushed the feeling aside and merely answered, “I went to Paris, mainly for business though.” He then asked something interesting that caught his attention on Taeyong’s list. “Never have I ever broken someone’s bone.”
You turned to Taeyong, shooting him a ‘what the hell’ look. “What kind of question is that?” Breaking your own bone was understandable. But why on earth would someone break someone else’s bone?
As expected, no one else except for the man himself raised his arm and chuckled. “I tweaked the question up because I technically did.”
Irene sighed. “It wasn’t you. It was on accident and it wasn’t Chunghee’s fault either.”
He sighed feeling a bit dejected. “I know but I feel responsible for what happened to Ten. Like I should have taught Chunghee better. Anyway, let’s move on.”
It was Irene’s turn again, and this time she yelped at reading one of the questions near the bottom of the page. “Never have I ever went skinny-dipping. What the hell, Taeyong?”
No one had raised their hand, and you were thankful for it because you wouldn’t know what to do with that information if either your married friends or your fiancé had done it before.
Taeyong wiggled his eyebrows at his wife suggestively, making her smack him hard in the chest and causing a windshield wiping laughter from him. “I really think it should be on our bucket list, babe,” he said.
“TAEYONG!” she screamed.
He laughed at her while you retrieved the list. “Never have I ever lived alone.” You had always either lived with your parents or had roommates when away from home. Taeyong and Irene were high school sweethearts, and so their only home away from their parents were with each other.
Jaehyun raised his arm solely once again. “I actually live on my own right now. I have my own place,” he answered. He never suggested to bring you over to his place, assuming that you were still awkward with him. Therefore, he only ever took you to public places to prevent you from feeling uncomfortable.
A phone rang, making Irene pick up her phone. “Hey Yeri.” Yeri was a mutual friend of yours and Irene’s and based on the muffled sounds from the other end of the line, you assumed that she was crying. “Oh no, just hold on for a second.” Turning to you guys, she said, “I’ll go talk to her outside.”
“I’ll come,” you added. You didn’t know what the issue was, but two heads were better than one.
“Alright. And Taeyong, do not drink out of my sight. You hear me?” Irene pointed her index finger at him as she reprimanded him.
Taeyong sulked like a sad puppy upon hearing his wife’s words. Once the two of you were out of sight, a smirk formed on his face and he turned to Jaehyun, wiggling his eyebrows alluringly.
Jaehyun acted dumb, not wanting to get in trouble for encouraging Taeyong and avoided his eyes.
Taeyong nudged Jaehyun in the elbow, making the latter sigh in defeat. “This is about drinking, isn’t it?”
He nodded eagerly.
But Jaehyun shook his head. “No.”
Taeyong deflated. “Why?” he wailed.
“You’re going to get in trouble. Didn’t Irene just warn you?”
“I always get in trouble by her. It’s nothing new. I really wanna drink.”
Jaehyun was in a huge debate. Should he let Taeyong drink? Would you get mad at him for letting your friend drink?
“Come on, man. Please?” The puppy look was too irresistible for Jaehyun to stop him. One drink wouldn’t hurt Taeyong, would it?
“Okay, I guess a little won’t hurt you.”
Taeyong’s eyebrows raised in amusement. “You mean us. We’re both drinking.”
-
After comforting Yeri with her boyfriend issue, Irene decided to call her in-laws and check up on the kids while you headed back to search for the boys and see what they were up to.
Only to witness the scene in front of you absolutely shocking.
Both Taeyong and Jaehyun unquestionably wasted.
Numerous bottles were littered everywhere on the dining table where the four of you previously played a game. Knowing that Taeyong was a lightweight, the majority of the bottles had to belong to Jaehyun. Like a koala bear to a tree, Taeyong clung onto Jaehyun from behind, splattering kisses on your fiancé’s cheeks and nuzzling his nose into Jaehyun’s skin. From the looks of it, Jaehyun didn’t seem bothered at all by your friend with the dimples on his flushed cheeks.
But you were.
“Taeyong! Let him go! That’s my fiancé you’re kissing!” you yelled and strolled over to them. Trying to split up your drunk friend from your future husband was close to impossible. When Taeyong was drunk, his strength nearly doubled. The only other approach to get Taeyong off Jaehyun was for you to take a deep breath and release a bloodcurdling scream.
Startled, Taeyong let go of Jaehyun and stumbled over his steps, landing flat on his butt. The loss of human physical contact had Taeyong become a crying mess, but you didn’t pay any attention to his melodramatic tears. Because right after that moment, Jaehyun wrapped his arms around your waist from behind and nuzzled his face in the crook of your neck. He took a deep breath of your scent and sighed in content. “Mmm, you smell nice Y/N.”
Your heart thrashed in your chest and all you could hear was your blood pumping loudly in your ears. All you could feel was the warmth of his arms around you with the tip of his soft nose pressed into your cheek.
When Irene reappeared and quickly sunk in the scene, she ran up to her husband. “Taeyong! Did I not warn you earlier?” she shouted. Taeyong was going to have a tough time from Irene when he sobered up.
Once Irene dragged her wasted husband to their bedroom, you were clueless of what to do with clingy Jaehyun and later chose to follow your friend’s idea. After much difficulty of attempting to pull him inside the bedroom, you dropped him on the bed.
Right before you left his side, you heard him faintly mumble the words, “I love you, Y/N,” before dozing off.
- ❀ -
“Y/N, Jaehyun, can you two go to the market and grab some food for the long drive home?” Taeyong asked.
The last morning of your time at the rental vacation home had arrived. Thanks to the drunken men from the day before, food stock had been used up considerably quick to battle their hangovers.
“Sure. Whenever you’re ready,” Jaehyun said to you.
You pursed your lips and nodded. Frankly speaking, you were beginning to feel uncomfortable with Jaehyun ever since you heard his confession. Even though it wasn’t the first time to hear him confess to you, ‘I love you’ was a lot more deeper than ‘I like you’ and you were more than glad that he had said it while he was drunk. If he was sober, you would have had no idea on how to respond back. It wasn’t necessarily his feelings that you were bothered by, but your own. You didn’t know where your heart was for him and that was what made you uncomfortable.
Taeyong tossed the car keys to Jaehyun while discreetly sending a wink in your direction. You rolled your eyes, aware that your friend was only trying to get you closer to Jaehyun.
The drive to the market was tortuously silent as you focused your gaze on the faraway mountains and grass fields.
“I’m sorry about yesterday,” Jaehyun began. “I didn’t know Taeyong’s light and when he’s drunk, it’s hard to refuse him.” Taeyong had forced bottle after bottle on the poor man, not stopping until Jaehyun was drunk like him.
You stifled back a small laugh. “It’s okay. I’ve seen it before. But do you remember what happened?”
He frowned and shook his head. “Did something embarrassing happen?”
“Well, I would say something entertaining happened. You and Taeyong were quite something.”
He paled, keeping his eyes glued to the road. “What did we do?”
You laughed. “I wished I recorded you two, but I guess I’ll forever cherish it in my memories.”
At the market, Jaehyun pushed the cart and your hand rested on the side of it. Halfway through, Jaehyun felt his phone vibrate. Seeing the caller’s name displayed, he sighed, slightly annoyed at the phone. “Sorry Y/N, I need to take this call.”
You were surprised that he was telling you, yet hummed in response.
He thanked you and answered the call, keeping his volume low. “Hello? Didn’t I tell you not to call me?” You weren’t trying to mind his conversation but sort of ended up eavesdropping. “Just talk to Jade for me, will you? Thanks.” He hung up the call, taking a deep breath before smiling at you and resumed the grocery shopping.
What was that about, you thought.
- ❀ -
“Oh my love! I’m so excited to finalize your marriage date,” your mother gushed. “The time has finally come!”
You stayed mute, letting your mother begin daydreaming of all the things that would happen at your wedding.  Recalling the condition set in the beginning, your father asked if there was a valid reason to break it off. Unfortunately, you weren’t able to come up with a single reason for why you shouldn’t marry Jaehyun.
Why did he have to be so flawless, you thought.
When the doorbell rang, your mother gave you a gentle push, cuing you to open the door. With a huge deep breath in and out, you attempted to put on your best polite smile and swung the door open. “Good afternoon, please come in,” your tone laced with such fake enthusiasm that you had never displayed to your future in-laws.
Mrs. Jung walked in and pulled you into, once again, a crushing hug. “Oh it really is a good afternoon, Y/N. Let’s get your wedding talk going!” Once Jaehyun’s parents strolled to the direction of the living room, you shifted your gaze to the man himself, standing still on the porch.
“Um, you can come in too. Haha.” You weren’t ever going to stop feeling awkward with him, were you?
Though Jaehyun only held a neutral expression. No smile or sparkle in his eyes. And it made you worry if he was okay.
“Jaehyun?”
“Y/N?” he called softly.
You blinked. “Yeah?”
He sucked in a breath and asked, “Can I hug you?”
You blinked again. Physical touches were going to be basic intimacy after marriage so he shouldn’t have to ask you for one. But then, nothing much had happened between you two in terms of it except for a few, and you thought he was only being a gentleman. He had only hugged you once and that was when he was drunk. “Yes, of course.”
He closed the distance between you two and wrapped his arms around your waist, flushing his warmth against yours. You felt butterflies in your stomach when he placed his chin on your shoulder, staying like that for what felt like a minute, just basking in your warmth before he pulled away. The slight smile he sent your way, not quite reaching his eyes, made your heart drop.
“Let’s go in,” he muttered and held your hand in his gently.
Your heart would have fluttered at the contact, but you didn’t like the feeling that began to settle in your stomach.
After you two walked in, Mrs. Jung began. “Now that everyone’s here, let’s think of-”
“Mom,” Jaehyun cut his mother off quietly but firmly enough to be heard, making her blink at him in surprise.
“What is it, son?” his father asked. Jaehyun was never the type to interrupt elders. But at that moment, he couldn’t let them begin planning, getting their hopes up when it wasn’t going to happen.
He let go of your hand and glanced at your mother. “I can’t do this.”
You were beyond confused with him. “Do what?”
He turned to you, his eyes holding sorrow. “This marriage.”
The eerie silence that followed was broken by your mother. “This doesn’t have anything to do with Y/N wanting to break it off, does it?”
You gaped at her. “This is my first time hearing about this. I didn’t know either.”
“There’s literally no reason why he would be calling it off,” she countered.
“Mrs. L/N, this doesn’t have anything to do with Y/N. It’s my decision. I’m just not ready. I’m sorry.” Jaehyun lowered his gaze to the floor while you incredulously looked at him.
Not ready? My foot! There was no way he wasn’t ready for this marriage. After the confessions, after all his smiles. He wouldn’t have continued taking interest in you if he was going to break it off.
“Jaehyun, this is unacceptable. You should have told us beforehand,” his mother scolded.
“And I’m sorry for that. I didn’t want anyone to know so that everyone knows this is my decision. I’m not being influenced by anyone for this.” He raised his eyes to meet your parents. “I apologize, once again, Mr. and Mrs. L/N.” Without giving you a glance, he turned on his heels and strode towards the entrance.
Your head was spinning, your heart aching for an unexplainable reason as you watched the man disappear out the front door. It happened. It finally happened. After all this time of you wanting the marriage to be called off.
But why weren’t you happy?
Jaehyun stepped out of your house, feeling slightly less suffocated and released the held back tears. He pulled out his phone, dialing a number and pressed it against his ear.
After the second ring, the call was answered. “Hey Jaehyun! What’s up?” Taeyong’s cheery greeting almost broke Jaehyun yet he willed himself to stay strong.
“Taeyong, can we meet tonight?”
- ❀ -
Jaehyun asked for Taeyong to pick him up. With the plan he had for that night, he wasn’t going to be in the right condition to drive. Taeyong had gotten the news from you prior to the meet that Jaehyun had called off the wedding. While Taeyong was childish at times, he knew when to act responsibly and had opted for cola when Jaehyun ordered spirits.
You didn’t take the news well either and Taeyong could tell instantly by your voice. He was going to talk to you later in person when Jaehyun had reached out to him first.
First come, first served.
Taeyong pressed his back to his chair and watched the man across down his shots. The food had been left abandoned as alcohol became a source of comfort for the broken hearted.
“I- I couldn’t do it to Y/N,” Jaehyun choked out. “I can’t let her marry me when she doesn’t love me. I can’t let her feel that she’s being forced to marry me when she doesn’t want to. Not once has she ever admitted her feelings to me. It’s like she’s only doing this for her parents.”
Taeyong sighed. “Jaehyun, I think you shou-” He bit back his words upon hearing a sob. The sobs had progressively increased, and tears flooded down Jaehyun’s reddened cheeks. Taeyong rushed to his side and guided Jaehyun’s head to his chest, hugging him as he soothingly patted his head.
The sobs had only lessened when Jaehyun choked out, “I love her too much, Taeyong. I just want her to be happy.”
- ❀ -
Your eyes fluttered open, the light breeze gently swaying the sheer white curtains that hung off the rods of your canopy bed. A soft breath left your parted lips and the aching hole in your heart continued to consume you. Your hand laid beside your head, the sparkling diamond ring still resting on your finger. While you didn’t know if your fiancé, ex fiancé, had taken the ring off, you didn’t have the courage to take off yours.
Irene answered the door and was astonished by your surprise visit. “Y/N, what a surprise. And you don’t look good...” she trailed off.
And you weren’t expecting otherwise when you felt like shit.
She ushered you in, and your eyes skimmed throughout the home, getting flashbacks to the times spent babysitting with Jaehyun.
Jaehyun.
You sniffed and tried to push your incoming tears back. “Is Tae...”
She shook her head. “He got an urgent call from work so he’s going to be there till late night. I heard about Jaehyun.”
You merely nodded, not sure what to say.
Irene placed a hand on your shoulder. “Do you want to talk?”
You chewed on your lips and shook your head. You had no idea what to say when you were confused by your feelings. At times like that, you’d go to Taeyong. He knew you more than your parents, more than anyone in the world, and would have a better idea of what you were feeling before you could realize it yourself. Until Taeyong arrived, you were going to quietly seek comfort from your friend and the little angels.
Chunghee came into sight and his eyes landed on you, running to you. Your typical reflex would have been a cheerful smile and have your arms open for him to run into. But you didn’t do that. The little boy’s steps slowed upon approaching you, noticing something was off when not met with the usual response. “What’s wong, auntie?”
A cry that you recognized belonging to Aera pierced through the rooms, making Irene leave the two of you alone.
Jinae had waddled into the living room, her eyes forming crescent moons, delighted to see you. She wobbled up to your legs and held onto your leg for support. You sat down on the floor and pulled her into your lap. You forced a smile at Chunghee. “Nothing. Auntie’s okay.”
Chunghee sat down beside you, looking around the room. “Where’s Jae uncle?”
Your heart stopped at the mention of his Jaehyun uncle. You were flattered that he liked him enough to ask about his whereabouts. “He... Jae uncle isn’t with me anymore.”
He stared at you. “Not together?” You shook your head. “Why?” he whined.
“What do you mean why?”
He pouted, and if it weren’t for the gaping hole in your heart, you would have laughed at how much he resembled Taeyong. “I like you and uncle together.”
“I guess we’re not meant to be together.”
With a scowl on his face, he yelled, “No! You two are!”
Jinae kept her tiny gaze on you and released a ‘humph,’ agreeing with her brother’s words.

Taeyong had received a warning from Irene to not make noise when entering home at night. His gaze fell onto the figure sprawled on the couch, facing the backrest. On his tip toes, he quietly moved towards it and peeked over to see your face. You were fast asleep with signs of puffy eyes, hinting that you were crying recently.
“You’re such a fool,” he whispered and kissed your head.
The next morning, you woke up, being greeted with a cheery Taeyong who dragged you to the dining table for breakfast. Even though you weren’t in the mood to, he nagged you into going out for a walk with him so that you could digest your meal. It made you think back to Jaehyun when he suggested the same thing on your second official date. You were secretly thankful that Taeyong dragged you out the door as your limbs were aching for some movement after being cooped up indoors due to your gloomy mood.
Spotting an unoccupied bench, the two of you sat down for a short break. “The weather is beautiful, isn’t it?” he asked, staring up at the fluffy clouds in the bright blue sky.
You puffed out as your gaze was fixed on the pebbles along the path. “I don’t know what to do. Why am I feeling like this?”
He snickered. “If I was in Jaehyun’s spot, I wouldn’t even know what to do with myself if I loved you.”
“Hey! Is that an insult?”
Taeyong rolled his eyes. “Seriously, only Jaehyun is supposed to be hurting right now. Why are you getting affected? Wasn’t this what you wanted all this time?”
It was.
But...
“Yeah... but I don’t know. I’m so confused. Jaehyun really is a good guy. But I- I don’t know.”
Taeyong watched you softly. “You know what the problem is?”
You scowled. “If I knew the problem, I wouldn’t be here with you and stressed out.”
He smiled warmly. “Your problem is that you’re holding onto your biased thoughts. The type of guys your parents had set you up with previously have been ones you didn’t like. So now that there’s a guy who is perfect for you, you can’t see that. Plus, all your life you wanted a love marriage. The second your parents interfered and tried to set you up for an arranged one, you thought love would never happen.”
You let his words sink in and felt a piercing stab in your heart after hearing his words. You wanted to fall in love the way you thought you would back when you were a teenage girl. You wanted to fall in love with the one you were destined to be with like the way it would occur in movies. Not through having blind dates with prospective partners.
“Y/N, let me ask you something and I want you to forget that you had ever met Jaehyun the way you did.”
That felt like another stab in your heart, even if hypothetical.
“If you never met Jaehyun through a blind date, but instead met him in another way, would your feelings change for him?”
If you met Jaehyun as a classmate, or as a mutual friend, or colleague, or even as someone you bumped into randomly on the streets, would your feelings change? “My head hurts,” you complained and slouched against the bench.
He tutted. “This isn’t something to use your brain for. What do you feel in your heart, Y/N? Would your feelings change? Would you then accept your love for Jaehyun?”
Love...
For Jaehyun.
You stood up from the bench, suddenly feeling a rush of emotions surging inside you. You began trembling, becoming hyper aware of what you had been doing all this time. You had been pushing away your feelings for him. Unknowingly had been denying your love for him. “Oh my God...” you breathed out. “Why am I so dumb?”
If you had met Jaehyun in any other way, then you would have realized your feelings way earlier.
Taeyong placed his hands on your shoulder, gently turning you around to face him. “You realize it now,” he chuckled.
You couldn’t see his face as your sight became blurry from the tears welled up in your eyes. “Why am I so stupid?” you cried, and Taeyong pulled you into his embrace, stroking your hair. Wet patches formed on his shirt as you sobbed in his chest.
Your friend kissed the top of your head. “After all this time of you wanting a love marriage, you didn’t even realize that the love of your life had been in front of you all along.”
“He’s never gonna forgive me,” you choked out.
Pulling away from you, he wiped your fresh tears off with his fingers. “He will. He loves you too much to hate you. Also,” he grabbed his phone from his pocket and did some tapping. Your phone chimed, displaying an address under your unread message. “That’s his address, the one where he lives on his own. Go to him, Y/N. Tell him your true feelings.”
- ❀ -
Jaehyun doesn’t hate you. He loves you.
With that thought, you quit being hesitant and rang the doorbell. Your foot tapped impatiently as you waited for a short time. When the door opened, you were met with a shocked Jaehyun. “Y/N?” Your name fell from his lips in disbelief, as if to see you again, let alone at his place, would be a dream.
A nod. “Yup. It’s me. Haha,” you chuckled nervously. “Taeyong gave me your address.”
He hit himself mentally for keeping you standing. “Come in.”
You walked in and weren’t surprised for the vibe his place radiated. After all the money spent on your dates, and being your parents’ selection, you expected he’d own a deluxe home, his being a modern bachelor pad. You couldn’t help but think back to a particular set of words when you second met him at the theater.
“Would you like anything? Coffee or tea?” he asked.
You shook your head. “No. I’m fine. Well... actually water.”
He nodded. “Of course. Please sit.” He shuffled his way to where you assumed was the kitchen. Out of sight, you cautiously sat down on the couch, scanning your eyes around.
Jaehyun came back with a tall glass of water, handing it to you. You thanked him and took a few sips before resting it on the coffee table. Your eyes landed on his ring finger, stunned to see the engagement ring still there. “You’re still wearing it,” you muttered.
He followed your line of sight and caught on to what you were referring to. Quickly, he placed his other hand on top to hide the ring from your sight. “Oh, um...” He glanced at your own hand and noticed it there as well. “Oh, you too?”
Nodding, you said, “Yeah, I...”
He kept his eyes trained on you, waiting for you to continue and explain for the sudden visit.
“I’m such an idiot,” you muttered under your breath.
He raised his eyebrows, hearing you clearly. “Why?”
“Because I didn’t realize that I loved you all this time.”
He froze upon hearing your confession for the first time, and his heart began beating faster. “You love me?” he asked, needing to make sure he wasn’t hearing things.
You nodded and laughed quietly. “If it weren’t for Taeyong to make me realize it, then I wouldn’t be sitting here with you. And I’m sorry that I’m late. I’ve been blind all this time because we were arranged, you know? I thought love wasn’t going to happen. But I’m so dumb to not realize it despite all the times you’ve made my heart flutter.”
A blinding smile took over his face and you were relieved to see it again. “I made your heart flutter?” Jaehyun’s heart was far from okay with your confession. There were rare times where he could figure out if he moved your heart, but you masked your emotions most of the time.
“You sure did. I’m seriously such a fool to not have- argh!” you groaned, frustrated with yourself.
He laughed happily, pleased with the effect he had on you. “Better now than never. So you love me? Like you don’t have any problem with me?”
Which reminded you... “Well, there is one thing.”
His smile faltered, anxious for what you had to state. “Yeah?”
You pressed your lips together. “What was your friend’s name? Johnny was it? At the movies. he mentioned something that you were devoted to your work, and I can tell you’re someone of higher position. Will that mean I might not be able to see you at times because you’ll be busy?”
His lips formed an ‘oh’ and his smile returned. “You’re right. I do work at a managerial position, so it is possible for me to be away. But did you ever feel that whenever I was with you? That I chose work over you?”
You shook your head. “I didn’t.”
“Good.”
“Huh?”
He grinned. “Remember our trip at that supermarket and I got a call? It was from work. Actually, that weekend our team had an urgent project to work on, but I was able to get someone reliable to cover for me so that I could spend time with you.”
Oh my God...
“Work is inevitable and rare cases I’ll have to be away from you. But I will do anything and everything I can to put you first.” His smile dropped quickly when noticing your tears. “Y/N, what’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?”
You sniffed back the wave about to hit you. “You’re too perfect. I don’t deserve you.”
The dimples that you loved so much reappeared, and he wiped your tears away. “Nonsense. More like I don’t deserve you.”
“Don’t say that,” you pouted, frowning.
He laughed and patted your head. “You’re so cute.”
Your cheeks burned with adoration for him, and you caught him off guard when you hastily leaned forward and pecked him on his lips. You pulled back and found him blushing.
Out of embarrassment, you diverted your gaze, looking at anything but his eyes. Jaehyun gently held your face in his hands and turned you to meet his twinkling eyes. “I love it when you surprise me, Y/N.”
You grinned and pecked his lips for the second time, wanting to feel his soft velvety lips again.
Surprised, he let out a hearty laugh. “Someone’s desperate for my lips.”
“After all this time, I can’t believe I didn’t kiss you once. Maybe that would have changed my mind and accepted you faster,” you joked.
He shook his head, smiling in amusement, and was startled when you threw yourself on him, wrapping your arms around his neck and kissed him hungrily. Jaehyun responded back, pulling you into his tight embrace and kissed back in a feverish manner. You moaned and combed your hand through his hair, earning a deep growl from him. You pulled back after what felt like a minute, both of you panting heavily. He stared into your eyes, and as a confirmation whispered, “You’ll be my wife.”
You chuckled breathlessly. “I’ll be your Mrs. Jung.”
He crashed his lips onto yours, moving more roughly. He left your lips and trailed down below your jawline, leaving a wet trail on your neck. Your moans increased in volume and he was pleased by how sensitive you were just from his lips on your skin. He pulled back and watched your reaction.
You whined at the loss of contact. “Stop teasing me.”
He quirked an eyebrow at you. “You want more?”
You definitely did. “Please?” You batted your eyelashes.
A smirk grew on his face. “Of course.” He placed his hands behind your back and knees, lifting you up into his arms bridal style. On the way to his bedroom, the two of you didn’t stop the kisses. He put you down gently on the bed and crawled over you, closing the distance between you two as he gave all of his love to you.

I was sitting on the bed while hacking Hannah's cloud to find clues. My phone ringed in my hand, the caller ID shows 'Unknown'.
I recognised the person, it's Man Without Face. I sighed as I know he called me again to give empty threats.
I reluctantly attended the call and kept it in my ears. But this time, I heard a girl's voice. "Hello? Help me!" She said panicked.
I suddenly recognised the voice, it's Hannah! I heard her voice in the audio in which she had a conversation with Dr. Ulric Barret.
She spoke to me with full of panic in her voice. "Hannah!" I said after coming out of my thoughts. "How do you know me?" She asked with the same tone.
"We don't have time for that. First, calm down," I said as I tried my best not to panic. "Hannah, switch on the GPS in which phone you are talking to me, I will come soon there,"
I said as I took my car key and went to my car. "O-ok," she shuttered in panic. I tracked her phone, she is near Duskwood.
It will nearly take 2 hours to reach there from my place. "Hannah, don't worry, I promise I will save you," I said while driving.
She hummed in a weak voice. I heard a faint sound of a door opening on the other side. "He came!!" She panicked. "Calm down! End the call and remove it from call history, and go where you were before!" I shouted.
She understood and the call ended. I called Jake hurriedly, but he didn't answer. I tried again and again. But still, he didn't attend.
"Jake, attend the call!!!" I shouted, don't know what to do, I was driving as fast as I can. I must save her.
Should I inform my Duskwood friends? No, you should not MC. They will get worried, what if they took a wrong move?
I tried to speak to Jake, but he didn't attend my calls. After one and half hours, I arrived at Duskwood.
I drive the car to the place where the GPS showed. I came to that place, it is an old house. It looks big, but too old and damaged. There is also a bunker.
I slowly made my way inside the house, I saw a room. I entered the room hoping Hannah is there.
But to my surprise, I saw many raven feathers, Cleo's photo which took secretly in the woods, Hannah's photos which took in different places.
Looks like someone stalking her. Then I noticed the candles are lit.....LIT!! OMG! The man without face is somewhere near, he can come at any time!
I quickly went out of the room and made my way upstairs. I saw Hannah was tied to a chair, her eyes are blindfolded and her body is bruised so badly.
I quickly removed her blindfold, "It's me," I said. She recognised my voice, "quick, we should leave. He will come here at any time!" I said as I untied the ropes.
We ran down, Hannah tried her best to be fast as she is hurt badly. We were about to leave but we heard the front door open with the creaking sound.
Our eyes widened in shock, but quickly I made Hannah stand in a dark place and I stood opposite side of her. It is also a dark place.
I peeked a little, it is the Man Without Face, he is wearing his creepy mask. He peeked inside the room to which I first went.
He slowly made his way to where Hannah is hiding. OMG! Please don't get caught. I prayed, and that's when my phone rang.
I gasped as he made fast moves and attacked me, but I pressed the green button. The phone fell from my hand and landed on the ground.
I heard Hannah shout seeing the scene in front of her. The man without face is trying to choke me, his strong arms are pressing against my neck. I was trying to escape from him by scratching his mid-arm.
When he heard Hannah shout, he left me and about catching her. But I did my best to stop him, I buried my nails in his left arm with my right hand as my left hand and body pushing him against the opposite side.
I know I am not strong to stop him, "Hannah, run!" I said as I kicked my car key which fell down. She stood there terrified and shook her head as no. "WHAT THE HECK, HANNAH?! RUN!!" I yelled.
She understood that if she stayed here, we both will get caught. So she ran as tears flowing down her cheeks. The man without face slapped me on my cheek.
It is so hard that I fell down, he ran out to catch Hannah. The corner of my lip is bleeding, I remembered the phone. I turned towards it, the camera is facing me.
"Jake," I said as I tried to reach the phone. But the man without face came back angrily and kicked my tummy. "Aaaaaah!" I cried as I felt the pain. I held my tummy.
He grabbed my hair harshly and pulled me, I cried. "Jake," I whispered as everything went black when the man without face hit my head on the ground.

Jake's POV
I noticed that MC called me many times, she will never do that. I muted my phone 'cause no one will call me. I quickly called her.
When she attended, she didn't speak anything. But heard fast footsteps, and a girl shouts. Its Hannah! But what is happening there?!
I hacked her camera, but everything is black. So I turned on her back camera, I saw everything horizontally. I can only see their legs.
"Hannah, run!" I heard MC's Voice. And it looks like she is trying her best to stop another person, it's the man without face!
And there is a little silence and then "WHAT THE HECK, HANNAH?! RUN!!" MC yelled then I heard the footsteps which fainted slowly.
I heard a slapping sound and MC fell down, I can see her face now, her lips are bleeding! "MC!" I called but she didn't hear.
She turned at looked straight at the camera, "Jake," she said weakly as she tried to reach it. But suddenly he returned back and kicked her tummy!
She cried in pain, I felt my eyes become teary. "MC!" I said worriedly. He then harshly grabbed her hair which made her cry. He hit her head on the ground.
"Jake," she whispered which made my tears roll down my cheeks. She passed out after that, he dragged her upstairs.
I don't know what to do now, I was panicked now! My tears are rolling non-stop. I wiped my tears, and tracked her location.
She is in Duskwood, I am coming for you, MC.

MC's POV
I felt so weak, I can't move my hands or legs. I opened my eyes to see a weird place. I felt a sudden pain in my tummy where that bastard kicked me so hard.
My tears started to roll down my cheeks, because my whole body aches. I hope Hannah is safe now.
I heard the door creaking sound, that bastard entered with his creepy mask. I glared at him. He came near me with a knife.
He placed the knife on my jawline and slowly moved to my chin. "You want to die right?" He asked. His voice sounded creepy.
I didn't reply anything, I don't want to talk to this bastard. "Looks like you won't talk," he said as he injected something on my neck forcibly. It hurts.
Again everything went black.

Jake's POV
I tracked MC's phone and went to that place, it is an old house. It took near three hours to reach. I took a taser from my backpack for safety. I entered the old house slowly without making noise.
The first thing I saw is MC's phone which is in damaged condition. I saw a room there, but he dragged MC upstairs.
So I slowly made my way upstairs, when I was about to open the door. I felt someone is behind me, without wasting time I turned and used my taser on him.
After some seconds he fainted, I entered the room only to see MC without consciousness. I ran to her, "MC!" I said I removed her rope which tied her leg.
After removing her rope, I was kicked by her on my shoulder. I hissed in pain as I looked at her while sitting down.
"Don't touch me!" She shouted. "What are you doing? I am not the man without face!" I said as I went to untie her. "You think I can't recognise you without wearing that creepy mask?" She asked.
She is thinking that I am the man without face. I ignore her and untied her. She kept on punching my Shoulder, "what are you doing?!" I asked.
"W-wait, why is your voice different?" She asked. "Because I am not man without face!" I said to her again. "Then who are you?" She asked me.
"Who do you think?" I asked as I helped her to stand up.
___________________
MC's POV
"Who do you think?" The person asked me as he helped me to stand up. I looked at his eyes, and I only wanted to say one name. "Jake," I breathed.
He smiled. Is he Jake? He took the rope which he untied me and went to the door and tied a person.
I slowly peeked who is that, it's the man without face! He is unconscious now. After tying him Jake looked at me, "we should leave," he said.
I nodded, he came near me and put my hand around his shoulder, and helped me to walk.
_____________________
He brought me to a hospital. "Jake, what about him?" I asked him. "I already called the police and informed," he told.
I frowned "what if the police wanted to meet you?!" I asked. He smiled "I won't get caught easily," he said.
"Oh, you saw your sister?" I asked. "No," he shook his head. "Then why don't you leave now?" I asked. "Do you want me to leave?" He asked with a frown.
"I didn't mean that! I just wanted you to meet your sister, she is hurt badly," I explained. Before he could speak my phone rang.
Yes, I took my damaged phone from there. It's Jessy who is calling. "Hello?" I said. "MC! Hannah was found!!" She said happily.
"But...she is hurt," she said sadly. "Don't worry she will get well soon," I said. "That's all your reaction? Hannah is found!" She said again.
I chuckled. "Yes, yes. Where is she now? Which hospital?" I asked. She replied, it's the same hospital in which I was admitted.
"What is the room number?" I asked. "216," she said. Wow, what a Coincidence. I am in room no.214.
"Alright," I said and ended the call. "Jake, let's go and meet your sister," I said. "What?" He asked. "Yeah, are you willing to come? She is near our room. There will be their friends too," I asked.
He shook his head, "I can't meet them all," he said. I understood him. I nodded, "I am gonna go," I said. "Be safe," he said.
I rolled my eyes and went to Hannah's room with my patient dress. "Hello," I said. They were all shocked to see me.
They stood stunned looking at me there. There was an awkward silence in the room.
"MC?!" Jessy asked as she came to me and hugged me tightly. "Aahh!" I hissed in pain as she touched my wound.
"What happened to you?" She asked worriedly. They all came to me and hugged me-no hurting me by pressing my wounds everywhere.
"Guys, you are hurting me," I whined. "Sorry," they said. I chuckled and looked at Hannah who is shocked. "Do you guys know her?" She asked.
"Yes," Dan replied. "She is the one who saved me from him!" Hannah said. They all again looked at me.
"So, you are hurt by helping her!?" Richy asked. I nodded, "yeah, but if the man without face didn't enter, we sure would have escaped," I said.
"How did you escape?" She asked me. "That....," I dragged. They all looked at me waiting for an answer. "The person who you guys think 'creepy' helped me," I said.
"Hacker man?!" Dan asked. I nodded. "OMG, I thought he is a bad guy," Jessy said. "Alright guys, I am tired," I said.
They nodded. "Go and take rest," Lily said. I nodded. "Hey Cleo, will you bring me your handmade cake?" I asked as I saw Cleo.
They all chuckled. "What?" I asked. They shook their head. "I will," Cleo said. "MC, thanks," Hannah said. I smiled at her and went back to my room.
"Ja-" I entered as I started to call his name. But he is not there anymore! I saw a note on the table near the bed.
I took it in hand, "Hey MC, I am sorry I can't bid a proper goodbye to you. Don't worry we will meet again soon after I got free from my pursuers :)"
I felt my eyes become teary, but he said he will come back. I smiled and kept the paper with me.

Restrained
Fandom: Death Note
Words: 4,150
Characters: Regressor!Light Yagami, Caregiver!L/Ryuzaki. Brief appearances from Soichiro Yagami, Shuichi Aizawa, and Watari.
Summary: Set during Light and Misa’s imprisonment (episode 16-17). Classification/Regressors Are Known AU: Light was classified as a regressor when he was fifteen, but has fought the identity ever since. L is classified as a caregiver, but has never used those skills further than calming people in interrogation situations. Things come to a head in the second month of Light’s imprisonment.
Warnings: Imprisonment, irresponsible use of restraints, mentions of death and murder, nightmares, panic attacks, involuntary regression, hidden regression being revealed non-consensually. Ominous ending.
Author’s Notes: I usually take issue with Classification AUs, because regression is a coping mechanism and not a fixed part of someone’s identity. Regression can change, and regressors can also be caregivers, and the idea that it could be ‘classified’ as part of someone’s political identity is kind of distressing. All of that said, it’s also a very comforting trope: it’s nice to imagine that you were ‘meant to be’ a regressor, naturally given that role, and that there are natural caregivers who want/need to take care of you. So, there are pros and cons to this kind of universe, as long as you remember that it’s an AU for a reason! Anyways, that’s my soapboxing done. Please note the warnings before reading!
Tumblr media
Light was not a regressor.
It didn’t matter what the letter he received at age fifteen said. Didn’t matter that his age range was listed as ‘2-3’ and a permanent caregiver was recommended. Light Yagami was a neutral, collected, and precocious teenager. He was mature for his age, and always had been.
Admittedly, Light occasionally sucked his thumb to help him sleep. And he convinced his mother to buy him more expensive sheets because he liked to run his hands across the texture. And maybe he cast side-glances at the adult playgrounds all around the city, at the regressors who were happily running and playing on the swings.
But Light Yagami was not a regressor. He got top marks. He wore stiff, professional clothes. He didn’t cry, not even when he stubbed his toe. He turned his nose up at sweet drinks and packaged candy. In short, at seventeen, Light was a model young man.
Which was when the notebook fell outside his classroom window, and everything got a lot more complicated.
--
Could a regressor do this? Collectively bring the world to its knees, the news outlets humming with one story? Could a regressor kill hundreds, save the general population from the evil in its midst?
Light Yagami was Kira, and Kira was not an age regressor.
--
Light Yagami was not Kira.
Light was trapped in a cell, his arms shackled behind his back, and he was absolutely certain that he wasn’t Kira. What kind of idea was that, marching in and saying he thought he was subconsciously Kira? Absurd. He wouldn’t do that kind of thing.
He yelled at the ceiling, pleaded with Ryuzaki, and received cold answers in return.
How had Light sat here for a week, believing that Ryuzaki had been right to lock him away? It was absurd: he couldn’t have committed the murders without knowing at all, it just didn’t make sense.
“You told me to keep you in there, no matter what you said,” Ryuzaki repeated calmly, his voice crackling through the cheap speakers outside of Light’s cell. “I’m only doing what you told me.”
“Well, stop!” Light shouted, tugging uselessly against the leather cuffs that held his arms behind him. His shoulders ached from the position. “Listen to me now, I’m not Kira!”
“We don’t know that,” Ryuzaki said. “Until we can be sure, you will stay in that cell. I’m sorry, Light.”
Light felt tears well up in his eyes, and he jerked his head down to hide it. With his bangs hiding his expression, he tried to wrestle himself under control.
He felt scared and helpless and he just didn’t understand what he was doing here. Let me out! a voice was screaming inside him, younger and just as frightened as he was. Please, I can’t take it anymore!
What was he thinking? He was Light Yagami, part of the taskforce dedicated to catching Kira. He could withstand this. He would have to.
He didn’t bother to hide the tears as he raised his eyes again to the camera.
“Fine. I’ll stay. But you’ll see that I’m not Kira! I don’t know what’s happening, but I believe that my innocence will be proven one way or another.”
“That’s exactly what Kira would say,” Ryuzaki drawled into the microphone, and then there was a short sound of feedback as the conversation cut off.
Light rocked back to lean against the side of the bed, feeling exhausted but satisfied. He’d made his statement, and he had fought off the despair. He was Light Yagami, and he would deal with this imprisonment with all the dignity he could.
--
This was awful.
Light had never been so bored and anxious in his life. The days stretched on, with only Ryuzaki’s occasional check-ins to keep his mind busy. Out of lack for other things to do, Light started sleeping more than usual. His days were hazy, short bathroom trips out of the cell and the clatter of the food tray his only reference points for time. The lights shut off for seven hours every night, the cameras equipped with night vision to watch him toss and turn in his restraints.
There was nothing to do but ruminate, worry, wonder. Light tried to run through lectures in his head, even tried his hand at mentally writing a story. He wondered if he could convince Ryuzaki to play chess with him over the speaker system, but found himself worrying about whether that would make it seem like he wasn’t taking his imprisonment seriously.
It had been a month, and Light was suffering.
The nights were hardest. In the dark, Light cried, trying to stay quiet. He couldn’t bite his thumb, he couldn’t feel his soft blankets, and sometimes he couldn’t sleep for the tug of the restrains at his wrists and shoulders. He wanted to kick his legs, flail around, scream at the top of his lungs until they let him out. But he was Light Yagami, and he had dignity. Even with cameras fixed on him twenty-four hours a day, even with his wrists and ankles contained, even under the constant scrutiny of Ryuzaki and the other members of the task force.
He almost made it to the end.
--
Things that Light didn’t know:
-it had been a month since Kira had begun killing again -his father was in a matching jail cell, several blocks away -the task force had been pressuring L for weeks to let Light and Misa go, convinced by the new wave of murders that the two were innocent -L had a plan, and was simply waiting to contact Light’s father to play his part
(Light would never know most of these things, because before they became relevant, everything fell apart.)
--
L sat in the same place he’d been sitting for weeks, watching the same scenes play out on the same flickering screens. Misa sagged against her restraints, Light laid curled up on the bed, and Soichiro sat in his chair, staring down at his hands.
Nothing had changed, but everything was different.
Light and Misa were Kira, or at least they had been. L had never been more certain. Now they both seemed utterly convinced of their innocence, and L wasn’t comfortable with the implications of that. Were they truly ignorant of their role? Had their ability to kill been passed onto someone else, or had the two of them been unwitting puppets to some new and yet-unseen player?
Misa took a struggling breath, and went limp again. Light shifted. Soichiro got up and began to pace. His cell would fit eight of his steps before he had to turn around and begin again in the other direction.
L missed nothing. But the pieces weren’t coming together.
He tapped his fingers against his knees, a syncopated rhythm as his eyes flashed from one prisoner to the next. Watari had brought him a plate of fruit, not yet touched, with icing sugar sprinkled over them. They would make L’s fingers sticky, and he didn’t want to get juice on the controls. He would have to eat with one hand, and operate the microphones with his other. He was just about due his check-in with Misa-Misa.
Just as L began to reach for the berries, a movement on-screen caught his eye. He didn’t currently have the audio on for the cells, but from the visual, he would guess that Light just woke up screaming. L has had a few of those nightmares. They weren’t pleasant.
L switched the audio on, and listened to Light trying to calm himself down. He was talking out loud, a mutter only loud enough for the microphones inside his cell to pick up on. (Light always yelled to the camera when he was talking to L, as if he weren’t aware that the cell was bugged well enough to hear every last breath he took. They could take no risks with Kira, when they still didn’t know how he was committing the crimes.)
“I’m okay,” Light was muttering. “Don’t… don’t do this. I don’t need anything. I’m okay.” His breathing caught, paused, and then resumed. “I’m okay. Please, please- don’t.” His voice was trembling, and L leaned closer. He’d seen Light crying, of course, trying to hide it by turning away from the cameras. But this seemed… different. Light was on the edge of something, and if L was lucky, it might be some kind of confession, fuelled by a terrible dream that brought all of his crimes rushing back with the sudden weight of guilt that Kira never felt.
Yes, L had enough self-reflection to know that he was kidding himself. But it had been a long month and a half.
He remained crouching, one hand poised above the plate of strawberries and the other hand hovering above the microphone that would let him speak to Light. And he listened.
“I don’t wan’ do this,” Light whispered to himself, his words slurring together in a way that L had never heard from the other man. The distressed voice hooked its claws into his chest in a way that was both foreign and familiar. Was this… “I don’ wan’ do this,” Light repeated, and then burst into tears.
It wasn’t anything like the quiet, hidden tears of the night-time. Light was sobbing, pulling at his restraints, tossing on the bed. Unable to wipe them away, tears and snot made a mess of his face. L watched as the teenager struggled to his knees and pressed himself against the wall, as if he were trying to get some kind of comfort from the pressure. The tears wouldn’t stop, even as words started making their way through the sobs.
“Lemme out, I wan’ out, I can’t, I can’t. It’s too dark, I can’t. Please, I’m too… I can’t feel my hands!” Light wailed, collapsing in on himself, his shoulders straining against the cuffs.
L was dimly aware that his hands had dropped to his sides. He knew he was staring. He knew that Aizawa had come running to stand behind him, alerted by the cries coming through the speakers. His ears were ringing, and he could feel Light’s sobs in his own chest.
The truth was unavoidable: Light Yagami was a regressor, and L had not known.
How was that possible?
Light was registered as age-natural on his official documents. L had watched him for weeks, and he had shown no signs of regression, not at home when he was unaware of being observed, and not here in the prison cell. Until now.
This was a harsh involuntary regression, from the looks of it, and the part of L that had made them stamp ‘caregiver’ on his own documents was aching.
“Oh my god. Is Light a regressor?” Aizawa said behind him. “That looks like regression, right?”
“It isn’t on his file,” L said, pleased that his voice sounded even. He hadn’t been around a regressor in distress for a few years, and he’d forgotten how much it made his chest hurt. Knowing that he’d been the one to put Light in that situation made it worse. Rationally, he knew that Light being a regressor meant nothing to the investigation. In fact, it made L even more certain that he was Kira. To conceal his headspace that thoroughly, even under investigation, made it clear that Light was no ordinary teenager. That must have taken an immense amount of willpower and planning.
“You have to let him out,” Aizawa said. “You can’t hold a regressor in a place like that, and his innocence has already been proven.” Light was still sobbing, his harsh breaths providing an undercurrent to their conversation. “Ryuzaki, you can’t possibly let that continue.”
“I… think he knew this might happen,” L realized. “This is what he meant when he asked me not to let him out, whatever happened. He knew that he would regress under the pressure.”
“All the more reason to release him! He still doesn’t know that Kira is killing again, it’s not fair. You’ve put him under way too much stress. Let me talk to him.” Aizawa reached for the microphone, and L struck his hand away.
“No. The last thing he needs is more sensory input from the speaker system.” Aizawa recoiled from the physical interception, eyes wide. “And you could jeopardize the investigation,” L added, slightly belated.
“You can’t do this. I’ll call the rest of the team,” Aizawa threatened, reaching into his pocket.
“There’s no need for that,” L sighed. He knew that the rest of the team would agree with Aizawa. The legal system was more lenient for regressors, and keeping them in solitary confinement was widely considered cruel. “I’ll go myself.”
Just because Light couldn’t be held in the cell anymore didn’t mean that L was prepared to let him go without twenty-four-hour supervision. Luckily, he had a set of unusually long handcuffs that he’d already been prepared to use after Light’s release. He could just speed that process along… and tell Watari to order some more regressor-friendly accessories for their room, of course. Maybe pad the cuff that Light would wear, so he didn’t accidentally hurt himself.
L shook his head, pushing his chair back from the table with a sigh. His caregiver mind was getting in the way again. Light was Kira, regressor or no. He wasn’t keeping Light close so that he could take care of him, but so that he was unable to hurt anyone else.
“We’ll discuss Misa’s release when I return,” L added over his shoulder as he headed for the door, reaching into his pocket to call Watari with the car. Light’s prison was a short drive from the base, and the sooner L got there, the better.
--
Sure enough, the drive was agony.
L stared out the window, the seatbelt Watari had forced him to wear digging into his chest and disrupting his thoughts. He was trying to make plans, trying to think back to all of his interactions with Light and wonder if he should have known. Was that why Light had always sharply refused any kind of sweet drink, even something as simple as fruit juice? Was he afraid that he might slip into regression? Was that why he had been crying at night, quietly regressing just enough for his childish fears to come to the surface? How confused was he, how disoriented in the cell? He seemed to know he was trapped, but did he remember what he was accused of?
L barely noticed when the car came to a stop, but when Watari opened his door for him, it took genuine effort not to go running into the building. Instead, L moved even slower than he usually would. Each gesture would be planned. Each word intentional. Just because Light was a regressor, it didn’t mean he wasn’t dangerous. L had to be on his guard, even more because of his natural caregiver instincts.
He made his way down the cold concrete stairwell, Watari a few paces behind him. Hands tucked in his pockets, breathing slow and natural. No worries about what he might have missed in the two minutes he’d been away from the screens. Had Light hurt himself? Was he safe? Was he still crying? L should have brought water, he’s sure to be dehydrated-
They stepped onto the cell block, and L had a brief conversation with one of the guards to obtain the keys. He’d already texted ahead, and they knew to expect him.
Watari stayed behind, just within earshot as L padded down the line of empty cells to the one that held Light.
It was strange to see the cell in person. For the first time, L could see the camera that Light had shouted at so often. He could see the details of the walls more clearly here, the chipped tile of the bathroom corner and the scratches in the concrete that didn’t come through on the long-distance video feed.
And there was Light, curled into a ball on the bed with his knees drawn up to his chest and his arms still tied behind him, much in the same position that he had been napping in before his nightmare.
L had approached soundlessly, and Light’s eyes were closed. He didn’t open them until L put the key into the lock and turned it.
“N—no, I don’t-” Light stuttered, and then looked up. “Ryuzaki? Ryuzaki!” He tried to get up, but the cuffs on his ankles made him stumble and fall. L heard his knees hit the concrete with a harsh crack, and Light teared up again. “No, no, don’t come in. M’sorry, don’t come in.”
“I’ll let you out of the cuffs,” L told him, his hand on the door but waiting to open it.
“No, I don’t want it,” Light managed. “Just… go.”
“Light, how old are you?” L pressed.
Light made a sound that resembled a squeak, and very slowly raised his eyes to L’s.
“How old are you right now?” L asked again. He watched Light’s expression twist from surprise to embarrassment to conflict, then Light started crying again.
“I don’t wanna be,” Light sobbed. “I don’ wan’ it.”
And there went L’s chest again, twisting and aching with the sound of a regressor in distress. He regulated his voice, unwilling to let it sound too caring. It came out flat instead.
“There’s no shame in regressing, Light. Two percent of the population isn’t an insignificant number. You’ll be more comfortable with your arms free.” Light shook his head, tears flying with the gesture.
“No! Don’t come in!”
“How old are you, Light? You’re young, I can tell that much. Probably in the toddler range, if I had to guess.” From Light’s glare through the tears, L had hit the nail on the head. “I thought so. Stop fighting me. I was going to let you out soon anyways.” Well, L hadn’t been meant to say that. But he could probably use that to his advantage.
“But… but you think I’m Kira,” Light mumbled. Interesting: he did have his full memories, then. Very little disorientation for such a young age range.
“I do,” L admitted. “But the taskforce doesn’t. They want you back on the team.”
“Me?” Light blinked up at him, and his eyes were even wider than usual, framed with perfect dark lashes, and L was in agony being separated by bars. This regressor was going to be the death of him. “But… I thought the bad things stopped ‘cause I was here.”
L was fascinated by the limits of Light’s mental reasoning while he was regressed. He would have to do some experimentation at a later time, but for now…
“I lied. Kira has been active for almost a month. I wasn’t convinced it meant you were innocent, but it makes a good case.” L watched that news hit home, but in a very different way than it would have hit an adult Light.
“You lied? Why? I thought… I thought I was bad, maybe, but you were lying!” Light tried to wipe his tears on his shoulder, only partially succeeding. “I don’ wanna know why. Probably a good reason, ‘cause you’re L and you do all the good things.”
Hmm. It seemed that Light’s certainty that he wasn’t Kira didn’t extend to his regressed self. Perhaps he was speaking more candidly in this headspace.
“I’m not fond of unnecessary cruelty,” L sighed, hooking one hand through the bars. “If I had known, Light-”
“You never woulda had me on the task force,” Light said, quite viciously. “Never ever.”
“That’s not true.” L traced one thumb against his lips. “I’ve known regressors who are exceedingly intelligent. Everything would have proceeded the same.”
“Even though I’m three?” Light asked, and L fought the urge to smile. Information, at last. Three. He stored that away.
“Even though you’re three,” L confirmed. “Your input is valuable to me. In fact, I would like to invite you back to the taskforce after you’ve recovered from this imprisonment.”
“Yes!” Light shuffled forwards on his knees, wincing at the movement. He probably bruised them earlier when he fell. “Yes, please! I wanna help catch Kira! And all the bad guys!” His eyes were shining with excitement and the tears from earlier. Looking down at him, L’s mind caught in a loop.
Light Yagami was Kira, but this… this was not Kira. What that meant about Light, or Kira, or the nature of Light’s regression, L couldn’t say, but he was certain of one thing.
“Can I come in now?” L asked.
Light visibly hesitated, then sank back onto his heels and nodded.
“Thank you.” L left the keys in the lock as he swung open the door and entered, making his way to Light briskly. It was easy enough to get the cuffs off his wrists, and Light whined when his hands were free, struggling to move his shoulders back into a natural position. “Give it time,” L advised, pressing at his spine with experienced fingers. Massages were one of his lesser-used skills, but easy to pick up with his wide knowledge of the human body. “They’ll hurt less in a few minutes.”
He wasn’t expecting Light to shift forward and wrap his arms around him, but that was exactly what happened.
L froze, his hands raised in the air as if in surrender. He’d comforted regressors before, at crime scenes and over interrogation tables. A few of the children at the orphanage were regressors, and he interacted with them when he visited. But none of them had dove into a hug like this. L was a detective, a mentor, a little too strange and intense to be approachable. Now there were arms wrapped around him, holding him tightly, and L didn’t know what to do.
Falteringly, L returned the embrace, the tips of his fingers resting lightly on his own forearms. Light had lost weight over the last month, and his body felt almost frail against L.
“Had a nightmare,” Light whispered.
L wondered if Aizawa was listening, back at the base. He wondered if Watari had wandered closer, after hearing the cell door open. He wondered what kind of things Kira dreamed about.
“Do you want to talk about it?” L asked, and didn’t lean back from the embrace.
“It was bad,” Light said. “I was running, and there were hands, and a fence, an’ there were… bodies. On the fence. And they were… they were…” L could feel Light shaking, and he held the regressor just a little bit closer.
“Just a dream,” L said. He wondered how much blood was on Light’s hands, how much of it he remembered. “You’re safe now. It was just a dream.” L held Light in his arms, the ache in his chest finally fading as he looked down at him. There, the regressor was safe, and L could finally relax. Light’s breathing slowly evening out, his grasp on L’s shirt finally loosening. “You’re safe.”
Light blinked up at L sleepily, and then his eyes slid closed. A natural reaction to stress, and having a caregiver close by. Even if L hadn’t disclosed his classification, his actions combined with Light’s instincts had likely made it clear. L cradled Light in his arms, like a puzzle piece fitting into place, and watched him fall asleep. He would have no more nightmares with a caregiver so close by, and even if he did, L would be there to calm him down.
L knew that this was trouble. Light was Kira, and Kira was death. L’s instincts as a caregiver could only blind him further as he continued in the investigation. If he were being rational, he would attach Light to someone else for the rest of his surveillance period. Prevent the caregiver/regressor bond that had been formed between them from strengthening into something difficult to break.
But L didn’t like being rational. He followed his instincts, and they were always right.
Right now, his instincts told him two things.
I will not let go of Light Yagami.
This will be the death of me.

An Exclusive Interview With Queen!
Music Life September 1975 issue
By Kaoruko Togo and Keiko Miyasaka
[Original text in Japanese, translation by deathtoming]
Around noon on July 14th, we left the hotel by car, and around two hours later we arrived at the beautiful Ridge Farm, surrounded by trees. We were blessed with clear skies on this day, and the blue sky and the greenery of the farm were almost blindingly beautiful. It was a bit past 2 o’clock. When we arrived in the main building, we were first greeted by a large dog, followed by a familiar voice from a room in the back. It was a large food hall, with Freddie, Brian, Roger, and John present.
When they see us, the four of them say, “Hello! You’re from Music Life, right? Welcome!” and greet us with handshakes. The four of them rented this Ridge Farm to focus solely on rehearsing for their next album. “We’re about to have lunch. Want to join us?” We knew we couldn’t work while hungry, so we accepted their offer with thanks. When the meal finished, we could begin our interview at last….
Music Life (ML): Are you in the middle of recording now?
Roger: No, we’re not recording yet. We’re all practising our new songs together. Once we practise them, we get an idea of how we should record them, I think.
ML: When do you think you’ll start recording?
Roger Maybe in about 3 weeks…
John: We might use Rockfield Studios in Wales.
ML: Do you always record there?
Roger: No, not really, although we did a bit of recording there for our third album, Sheer Heart Attack.
Freddie. We used around five studios to record that one. We’ll probably use several studios this time around, too.
ML: You’ll do a bit of recording in London, too, right?
Roger: Probably a little bit, yeah. We usually do our mixing in London.
Brian: But when we first record the backing track, it’s better to do it somewhere where we’re nice and settled, so it’s good to do it while we’re holed out in the studio. By doing that, we’re able to relax and do the recording.
ML: Can you tell us something about your upcoming album?
Freddie: Yeah, well we only have the rough framework at this point, but I think it will be our best work so far. We’re in the middle of creating the songs now.
Roger: Nothing has really come together yet, so it’s difficult to explain.
John: When we first came here we presented what songs we had written so far to each other, and we had about two albums’ worth, haha.
ML: I hear you’re heading to the US on tour soon.
John: Probably. Our manager is in the US now, and he’s apparently in talks with a bunch of people.
Freddie: We have to decide whether to record the album or go on tour in the US like we had decided during our previous tour.
ML: How long have you been working with your producer?
Freddie: His name is Roy Thomas Baker, and he’s been with us since our debut album.
Roger: We’re co-producing the album with him. Our next album will be with him, too.
ML: This Ridge Farm is such a beautiful place. How did you find it?
Roger: Our mixer, John Harris, found it. The owner often rents out this place to rock groups, apparently.
<At this point, an airplane flies overhead, making an extremely loud noise! Everyone shouts “Quiet!”>
ML: When you write your songs, do you do it individually?
Freddie: Yes, that’s right. Everyone writes their own songs in their own homes, and then brings it to places like this and we all work on it.
ML: How many songs will be on this album?
Freddie: I don’t know yet. Maybe around 12.
ML: When will it be released?
Freddie: That depends on a lot of things. But I want it out some time this year. It will probably be by the end of this year.
ML: What have you been up to since you came back from Japan?
Freddie: For several weeks, we kept on talking about our time in Japan, haha. We’d unwrap the presents we got from Japan. Please pass along our thanks to our fans in Japan, because we were really treated so kindly.
<An airplane makes another appearance. The four look up and protest again.>
ML: Is there anything that stands out in particular from your time in Japan?
Roger: Aside from the people we met, probably our final show in Tokyo. Something felt special. It was also our final show in Japan. The atmosphere was wonderful.
John: I also remember appearing in a kimono on stage for the first time in that concert.
ML: What about Japanese food?
Freddie: Like, tempura, haha. We went to a Japanese restaurant with our bodyguards in Japan. Oh that’s right, please send our regards to those bodyguards; we owe them a lot.
ML: What do you want to do the most the next time you’re in Japan?
Roger: I’m going to go shopping for sure, haha! Things like tape recorders and other things. Last time, Freddie bought lots of ceramics, and Brian and John bought cameras.
ML: Brian, you like cameras, don’t you?
Brian: Yeah, I do photography sometimes, and I have lots of other hobbies. Right now I’m really into audio.
ML: Since when have you been taking pictures?
Brian: Since quite a long time ago. But I only recently got a good camera. In England, cameras are so expensive.
ML: This is especially the case in Japan, but you have a lot of young girls for fans. What do you think about that?
Roger: It’s outstanding, haha! Japanese fans in particular give us lots of presents. We don’t get too many gifts from other countries, but it seems to be a part of the Japanese tradition.
ML: Among your young, female Japanese fans, there are some who say that Queen is their first encounter with rock music.
Roger: Great!
Freddie: That’s a good thing. It was really exciting when we were in Japan, and I think it was probably the same kind of atmosphere as it was for the Beatles in the ‘60s.
<The others chime in with comments like, “That’s really good!”>
ML: Were there any interesting gifts from Japan?
Brian: I received a lot of birthday gifts, so thank you very much to all of you for those presents. I received many works of art, and also things like dolls and traditional balls wrapped with beautiful string. We got lots of toys, too.
Roger: That ball with the string was hand-made, right? I got one, too.
<The plane flies by again, distressing the band.>
ML: In your free time, what kind of music do you listen to?
Roger: I’ve been listening to Led Zeppelin's first album.
Freddie: Lately, classical. Like, Chopin. Also things like Led Zeppelin and John Lennon.
ML: Freddie, you have a broad range of interests.
Freddie: Of course. I’ll listen to anything that I like. That said, there’s no artist whose album I’d buy as soon as it was released.
ML: Brian, what about you?
Brian: Pretty much the same as everyone else. I often listen to Led Zeppelin.
ML: There’s a place called “Rhye” in the lyrics for Lily of the Valley, but is that a real place in England?
Freddie: No, it’s a land from my imagination. It’s also mentioned in Seven Seas of Rhye, and I guess it’s like a fairy tale.
Roger: There is a place called “Rye” in England, although the spelling is different.
ML: Your songs’ lyrics seem to be influenced by classical poets.
Freddie: You’re referring to lyric poetry. I don’t think we’re influenced by that too much. Truthfully, I don’t have time to read. I just like expressing myself in that way. Those kinds of expressions are easier.
ML: Do the really passionate lyrics for love songs come from your personal experiences?
Roger: Ahhhh--!! Haha, yeah right! But I guess there’s, uh, a little bit of something in there.<Grinning> But Brian sometimes writes really passionate ones.
ML: She Makes Me is quite the song, isn’t it?
Brian: No, it’s not like that at all. <Acting quite bashfully> Although there are times when my personal experiences are expressed in song lyrics.
<The rest of the band hoot and holler at this!>
ML: The band does a good job recreating the sound from your records live on stage, don’t you?
Roger: We’re not trying to reproduce what you hear on the record exactly, though. Of course we want to produce a good sound, but on stage we also need to add an exciting mood to the quality of the sound. So that’s why it needs to be a little different from the album.
ML: Which do you like better, recording or performing live?
Freddie: I like both. They’re both interesting in their own ways.
ML: Do you use any special equipment on stage?
Roger: No, although Brian uses echo machines and such.
ML: Do you have a lighting technician?
Freddie: We do have one, but the band comes up with the idea, and our lighting guy -- his name is James Dann -- takes care of the rest. We’ve already come up with our next stage design and it’s going to be interesting.
<The plane flies by again. Everyone looks defeated.>
ML: Killer Queen was a big hit single; are hit singles important to you?
Roger: It’s not absolutely necessary. But we’ll keep on releasing singles. Of course we’ll only release ones we like, though.
ML: Which do you like better, singles or albums?
Freddie: Definitely albums! I think our music is geared more towards albums rather than singles.
Roger: Rather than releasing single after single, it’s better if there happens to be a song in the album that works well as a single, and we release it if the timing is right. It’s not good if we start thinking we need to release a single every 3 months.
John: On this upcoming album as well, we will record everything first, and then release something if it works well as a single. But we don’t particularly record only songs that would work as singles.
ML: Does it seem like you’ll have another song like Killer Queen?
Freddie: No, when Seven Seas of Rhye became a hit in England, the people at the record company wanted our next song to be like that, but we couldn’t do it. We go in the studio and record what we’re feeling at that time, and only after everything is finished do we decide as a group what to release as a single.
ML: So, you’re always looking for a new sound?
Freddie: It’s more interesting that way.
Roger: That’s why we come to places like this, and while we’re rehearsing we make a bunch of noise and form songs from that.
ML: Did someone serve as an inspiration for Killer Queen?
Roger: Freddie’s mom.
<Everyone bursts out laughing>
ML: Do you have plans for a British tour?
Roger: Yeah. Probably by the end of this year.
John: But first we need to record our album, and we don’t know what will come after.
ML: Which country’s fans do you like?
John: Japan’s, of course, haha!
Brian: <Speaking seriously> We were really surprised by the reaction of our Japanese fans. Honestly speaking, we didn’t realize it was at that level.
Roger: We thought there would be difficulties because of the language difference, but rock fans are the same around the world, in the end.
ML: Did you have a break after you came back from Japan?
John: Just a little. But we had lots of preparation to do, so it’s like we didn’t have a break.
ML: And uhh… now I’d like to ask about things outside of the music. It’s something Japanese fans want to know: when did you fall in love for the first time? What kind of person were they?
<Everyone reacts in horror, and they point at each other, with no one answering the question. Finally, Freddie speaks for the group.>
Freddie: Err… our first love is, of course, music, haha.
ML: Do you have any memories from when you were going to school?
Roger: I haaaaated school!
ML: What about you, Brian?
Brian: I went to an all boys school. I had no idea what girls were like, right up to when I graduated when I was 18. It was really a shock when I first got to know girls. But that’s the British school system for you. I was raised away from girls for so long that I was afraid to meet them.
Freddie: You’re still afraid of them, aren’t you? Haha. <This was a tough joke>
ML: Freddie, what subjects did you like in school?
Roger Oh, I know! ”Needlework”! <Everyone bursts out laughing>
Freddie: Art. I studied graphics and illustration at an art school for 3 years.
ML: What about sports?
Freddie: I did everything. Cricket, tennis…
ML: Do you still meet up with your friends from school?
Freddie: I often meet with around two of them.
ML: And, finally, are you married?
Roger: Japanese fans often want to know things like that, but I won’t say. <Roger winks mischievously.>
Freddie: We’re all single! But the Japanese girls have to find that out for themselves.
ML: Let’s get a message from each one of you to our readers…
And with that, the friendly interview came to an end. We were fortunate that the band talked to us in a relaxed mood while bathing in the bright sun.

Dead By Daylight Fan Killer Concept: The Warden
Tumblr media
Evil Mallcop? yes i’m still making these my brain doesn’t stop for anyone including me
(that second pose is supposed to be him on the radio but limitations of pixel art render it a little muddy gomen)
Lore: <Real name> was always obsessed with the modicum of power he could gain over others through violence and authority. Hall Monitor, Team Captain. Rejected from the Military, he instead found his niche in Mall Security, but always yearned for that extra power.
When a robbery at the Mall’s bank gave him the chance to exercise real violence, that was the only taste of it he needed to become completely addicted. But such a thing only happens once in a blue moon in a small town like his. So he needed to get creative.
Luring outsiders into “his” Mall after hours to chase off gave him the high he needed, but it wasn’t enough on it’s own. Locking them inside to give him more time to hunt, that helped. It wasn’t until he started killing that he felt like a real man.
His methods over time became more brutal and his victims less selective. This was no longer a job, this was his way of entertaining his fantasies, of vigilantism, territorialism, of the world working as he saw it: with him as the alpha male.
He always hid his tracks, of course. Stayed behind to swap the tapes, wipe the floors. One of those nights though, his radio crackled on it’s own, a whispering inviting him to a specific part of the mall. Not an intruder, not the usual kind at least. It was a fog, a darkness, a calling. A place where he could live his life the way he wanted, without pretending to be something he’s not inbetween.
With overwhelming evidence of his guilt, caught on tape, bodies strewn about in too many pieces to identify, a warrant was put out for the arrest of <Real Name>... but by then he was far beyond their reach.
The Warden plays into fear of authority and abuse of power. He’s one of the few killers that speaks out loud, but nothing he says is discernable, heavily muffled by his mask and overlayed with radio crackle, ending most of his callouts with a burst of static as if he’s communicating via radio. He enjoys his work, so he occasionally gives a quiet dark chuckle to himself.
His casual animations, such as movement, emphasise a sense of stoic professionalism, but his attacks and pallet and locker interactions betray that by showing his frustation and need for dominance over others as he hunches forward animalistically or throws his arms around in a violent tantrum when bested.
Also, he always has his finger on the trigger. Absolutely no gun safety. He even fires it as part of his pallet break animation.
Weapon: Bloodstained Flashlight. He lurches violently as he swings it around and then brings it down overhead. On a miss, he settles and stops to click his radio and call in the “intruder”, on a hit, the flashlight flickers and he stops to smack the side of it (with his finger still on his gun’s trigger) and shake it off.
Power: Intruder Alert. The Warden can hold M2 to raise his flashlight above his head and click to shine it downwards where he’s pointing. the light beam painted red by the bloodstains on the lens, and obscuring his Red Stain (because he doesn’t need two red floodlights coming out of his face anyway). He moves slower and can’t attack until he turns the flashlight back off and resets to a neutral animation. Survivors hit by the light gain Alert.
Alert is a meter that fills up in stages, each stage drops rapidly once the Survivors are out of the light, but can’t be reduced to a previous stage by any means avaliable to the Survivors. Being put on a Hook immediately resets to Alert stage 0.
Survivors afflicted with Alert 1 let out a scream that reveals their aura for a few seconds whenever the flashlight passes over them.
Survivors afflicted with Alert 2 will trigger a Loud Noise Notification in the form of a ringing alarm bell when interacting with a chest, or hiding in a locker for a short duration, as well as the effects of Alert 1.
Survivors afflicted with Alert 3 will trigger a Loud Noise Notification in the form of a ringing alarm bell when interacting with a generator for too long (with a ui indicator telling them when they’re risking it) or failing a skill check, as well as the effects of Alert 1 and 2
Special Attack: Lethal Force Authorized
When the Warden successfully raises a survivor all the way to Alert 4, he aims his gun as well as his Flashlight at them when successfully keeping the Survivor in the center of the screen, giving the Survivor an audio indication as he does this, in the form of loud police sirens. After a short duration of focus, during which he must keep the Survivor in the center of his screen with no obstacles in the way, he fires his gun, instantly sending the Survivor into the Dying state at range.
Perks:
Hex: Prisoner’s Dilemna: After being healed by another Survivor, the healed Survivor’s next Skill Check automatically fails.
Repeat Offense: When a survivor wiggles out of your grasp, they are slowed for a duration. After this perk has been used, it rests on a long cooldown.
Intruder: Destroying a breakable wall grants the Killer Haste for a short duration and gives Intruder a token. Intruder also allows the Killer to vault much faster by spending 2 tokens (at max rank, it costs more tokens at lower rank),
Addons!
For the obvious, faster Alert gain, faster movement while the flashlight is raised, longer reveals associated with Alert, shorter time before Alert 3 triggers the noise...
There’s also the weird addons as always, such as disabling his gun but making Alert states permanent even though hooking, and slowing Alert gain significantly but increasing Lethal Force focus speed significantly.
Thematically his addons are a mixture of confiscated items, “confiscated” items (i.e looted from his victims), mall security items, and miscellanious weaponry or weapon accessories he owns as a casual purveyor of violence, such as brass knuckles, tactical knives, etc.
I don’t normally specify Addons for my fan killers because I don’t want to get that indepth with it but in this case I had an idea I liked, so one set of Addons (possibly his Alert Gain increase) is dog tag themed. Brown is toy dog tags, yellow is stolen dog tags, green is homemade dog tags with his name on it, and the final rarest dog tags are bloodstained... Because killing a soldier makes him feel so big and strong.
I wanted to tap into the ideas of scary indescernable voices through a radio, stoic faux-professional men who are here to kill you for unclear reasons, toxic masculinity and it’s association with violence; there’s a lotta scary stuff to work with!
Mori:
The Warden drops his flashlight and stomps around to the front of the Survivor to hoist them off the ground by the neck. As they open their mouth to struggle to breath, the Warden messily and violently shoves his pistol into the open mouth, and pulls the trigger. He calmly tosses the body aside and “calls it in” on his radio. He darkly chuckles to himself as he picks up the flashlight from the ground,.twirls it and turns to face forwards again, moving on.

“We are all on the same side. It doesn’t have to change our future together.”
Kylan would never dare consider doubting Lotor, but he was also no fool to leave loose ends hanging, so to speak. He worked along with their leader and his intentions - his goal - was always about keeping Alteans and the invaluable culture of said race alive. Against all odds, all naysayers and doubters, he kept to it. And he succeeded.
“You enslaved countless Alteans! How many innocent lives did you destroy?!”
Slaves? No. They were not slaves. They were not treated as such. If anything, they were flourishing and well on their way to becoming a better society than the one led by King Alfor. The progress was well on the way and the future looked bright. So, what happened? He needed to hear it, needed to have the physical evidence right in front of him.
“Surely, you can see the greatness we’ve already accomplished -”
The audio distorted then, signifying Sincline was most likely damaged from an unsuspecting attack.
“-llura, stop! You and I - zzt - Altean culture. We were meant - kkzzt -”
The black box was heavily damaged. Being exposed to the elements, especially quintessence, no doubt rendered it beyond repair. Except, Kylan knew how to save the proof and secure the device for future use. Plan B. Have a backup. Always have a back up.
“You’re more like Zarkon than I could have imagined.”
He closed his eyes slowly, releasing a solemn and heavy sigh of disappointment. He wasn’t going to say he knew everything, even if the hidden picture was revealed right in front of him. No, what he has here ultimately didn’t matter in terms of putting Lotor back on the throne.
“Who are you to question my tactics - “
But it was enough to clear his name. It was enough to show that Voltron started a whole new, deadly, and severely costly war by attacking the Emperor.
*
They had suggested putting him in a pod to stabilize his quintessence levels. Lotor’s soul may have returned, but that doesn’t mean his body was in a relatively safe state. Logically, it made sense to use the technology at hand to quicken the process, but you convinced them to keep him on a bed instead. Convinced was putting it lightly. You wouldn’t move on your decision, even if it meant using logic as a tool to get what was best for Lotor.
“I will siphon it from him, as I do with the other patients,” you explained, “It’s safer this way.”
It was your reasoning and also what you used to convince yourself, too. Your hand was loosely holding his as the steady flow of quintessence ebbed through the contact. When he had collapsed from exhaustion in your arms, you already knew that a confined space wouldn’t do well for his recovery. He needs to wake up naturally in a comforting environment, somewhere open, somewhere...safe. You promised him that at the very least.
But the longer you stayed with him, the more you came to the haunting realization at exactly how bad it was for the Galra Emperor. His skin was shriveled, no doubt either from over exposure or the action of his soul literally being sucked out of his body. Maybe even both. But the inside is what worried you the most. Starvation. His organs were scarily dehydrated. Lotor’s system was off for so long, you weren’t sure he could even eat anything nourishing.
And, oddly enough, there were times you couldn’t...see him as a patient. You saw him as something more, something beyond just Emperor. Allowing those buried thoughts to unfurl left your stomach stirring in uneasiness.
Lotor wasn’t talkative. Recovery was slow and, sometimes, he barely woke up long enough to sip water or open his mouth for ice chips. You weren’t even sure if he was coherent enough to answer the typical questions for patients who experienced such acute delirium. Do you know who you are? Where you are? What happened?
No. No, overflowing with too much would stunt his progress. Plus, you often found yourself hesitating to even speak with him. Maybe it was wrong of you to take advantage of his illness to push your own discomfort away. If he didn't ask, you don’t need to answer. But there were urgent questions lingering between you two and you know they will come around to rear its ugly head eventually. You’ll have to face them, whether you like it or not. You’ll have to hear what he has to say. What you’ll say. What you’ll feel.
But...
Lotor first. Your thumb ran over his knuckles softly, gaze longingly focused on your conjoined hands. Lotor first. That’s how it felt like when trapped in Sincline’s…
*
The Black Paladin has seen many haunting horrors in his life, but nothing will be more traumatic than seeing his own body as a corpse. No...his alternate self was alive, he just looked shriveled and sick and rotten. Sunken eye sockets, skin blemishes from what he knows as quintessence burn. The bite marks, oh, there were so many torn in his suit. Different sizes, different states of decay.
But he was safe and, more importantly, alive. Now, the matter of what state his mind will be in is something not even he can help with.
“I will pass the message on to the doctor once Emperor Lotor is in stable condition,” Kylan accepted the letter handed to him by the Black Paladin then carefully slid it into his coat pocket, “Thank you, again. You have done us a great honor. Saved us all, actually.”
Yet, as much as he would like to accept such gratefulness, he couldn't help but keep his lips set in a firm line. Saved them? Or condemned them? This war in his reality wasn’t theirs to deal with, but wouldn’t it be just as neglectful and dispassionate to allow the hoktril to be exposed to other realities? A double edged sword. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
“I only hope that his return was not too late. Unfortunately, time does not appear to be on our side as of late.”
Kylan nodded in agreement, “You have your duties, we have ours. And yours must be urgent if you need to leave so soon.”
Nebulous orbs slowly closed, easily remembering the scribble he quickly jotted down for your eyes only. A message, a dire one, explaining why his leave of absence was absolutely necessary, but not for the reason anyone would assume. The Black Paladin had received a distress call, one he had not heard from in a very, very long time, and he had every intention to answer it. Sven’s voice rang in his ears clearly, as if he was standing right behind him. His hushed whispers panicked from hiding. He knows the tone well.
“I implore you to use the communication stone with utmost discretion. However, as soon as matters have settled here,” Paladin Lotor gave a wave, a vague gesture at all of this, “Let me know when your forces are ready to fight.”
He gave a noble, respectful bow. He shouldn’t have regrets, but perhaps he had one nagging the back of his head. Chewing on his tongue, he wonders if it was his cowardice that told him it was better to leave without telling you face to face.
*
If there was one thing Emperor Lotor despised about hospitals, it was the smell. The acute, sanitized scent of alcohol and sterilization never brought him comfort when awake. Even now, during every odd moment he would rouse from a deep comatose-like state, he found it absolutely much worse. The air was cold, chilling his nostrils, yet there was a warm blanket covering most of his body, all the way up to his shoulders. Warmth...something he cherishes now that he had the cold touch of death’s finger beckon his soul from his body.
It took days for him to realize he was alive, longer to know that the doctor had dutifully tended to his recovery. It wasn’t easy, regaining his senses and awareness. His thoughts were slow, as if relearning everything that which went dormant in his mind. Words, thoughts, actions, feelings. Feelings...like your hand gently clutched in his. Not at all unlike that memory of falling in a pit of darkness, tethered by the mere simple contact of entwined fingers.
And damn, to remember that utopia-esque simulation. Was it a simulation? It all felt too real. Too perfect, too...happy, one he thinks he will never really get to experience ever again. That love, that peaceful life, that completion. At the time, he didn't question it. Who would? But now, now as you read the holographic screen and scanned the details about his vitals in silence, he has so many to ask you.
Was it a hedonistic crime to still feel that inkling of love as he stared fondly at you?
Or maybe...that was just a lingering side-effect. A sort of after-high from being forced into an addictive drug-induced state of mind from a mere memory.
You knew he was awake. Lotor made it clear with his silent shifting, a gentle squeeze of his hand in yours, and a slight, almost quiet, groan of discontent when he felt his body ache in the worst possible ways. Part of him would've chuckled at the thought that maybe you were avoiding him, or rather, avoiding looking at him. Then another part would caution that it was wise of you to do so, for both yours and his sake.
Maybe, just like him, neither of you were ready to ask questions about the intimate life you shared. Maybe if he kept his mouth shut, both of you can pretend it didn’t happen. It was a trick. A ruse, a test. One conjured deep from within the heart’s desires and brought to the surface without warning or care.
The light above was dimmed in a cool blue hue, offering him a sense of peace and tranquility, but what really helped calm his nerves was the smell of a warm cup of hot chocolate wafting through the air. A promised treat, giving him the freedom to choose if he wanted to drink or simply hold it in his hands. And yet, he didn't reach for it.
Lotor reached for your hand. You gave it willingly, almost instinctively, and he was quite aware of how his heart beat just a little louder at the gesture. Lotor wasn’t sure he liked that or not. Well, he did, but he shouldn't. He really shouldn't because it was wrong to harbor such feelings for you considering the circumstances. But the heart wants. The heart yearns.
Lotor can control it. He swears he can.
So many unspoken words between you two, yet silence was clearly winning here. Then again, he can’t complain too much. Or at all, really. Your thumb slowly roving over his knuckles was nearly entrancing. The simple touch made his body compliant, whether because it was you or because the action itself was an unconscious act on its own, he would never find out.
You stopped suddenly then gave him a light squeeze, “How are you feeling?”
“I’ll be…” he paused, recalling how he felt when falling out of that cockpit, the panic, the pain, the cold, so, so cold, “fine.”
And while normally, those few words would be firm confirmation that you’ve done your job flawlessly well, you can’t help but let your heart seed doubt in your mind.
“And you, good doctor?”
Was he asking about your health or how you felt coming out of that life-like experience?
You twisted your wrist, closing the holographic screen before giving him your full attention, “Coming back to life is not what I expected, but neither was dying. It was different than-”
A twinge in your shoulder pulsed, reminding you of the last time you danced with death so romantically.
“I recovered faster than you. Kylan informed me i was gone for a mere few minutes. Clearly not long enough for all the heat to leave my body, but long enough to give him a fright.”
Lotor had a certain look behind his eyes, a certain longing for the truth. You turned away.
*
It’s been a week. The metaphorical wall was back up. But it wasn't just you that decided avoidance was the best course of action for now. He, too, opted to shove those unanswered questions in the back of his mind as far as he could. Lotor only wondered exactly how long he can let it fester. How long you could let it fester. Maybe the two of you were more alike than you want to admit.
When the deepest, most intimate, most raw secrets and desires surface, that exposed vulnerability suddenly becomes a dangerously choking weak point. Becomes something to fear. Becomes tangible and no longer yours to hide. But to acknowledge such a thing now? What? Were you two going to sit and talk about it? Have a coffee date and reminisce of those fake nights of feeling safe in each other’s arms?
No. It was much easier, much smarter, to stay focused on the goal. It was more important.
Was it awkward? Not at all. You dressed him in silence with careful fingers, wary that the lightest of touch could bruise his still-healing body, and he watched the concentration consume your task. Such a simple thing spoke volumes to the careful observer. Lotor was the patient. You were the doctor. Play the roles well and everything will be fine.
But just to be sure…
“We are not going to talk about this, are we?” he asked his one question, voice just a tad lower than normal, meant only for you to hear.
Slipping the new bracelet around his wrist, you waited a few moments until the indicator glowed green, “No. Not now.”
Lotor’s hands went slack at his side, a sign of obedient understanding. He offered his hand to you, not as a gesture of intimacy. It was for his health, of course. His quintessence levels were still a little high. He was sick, still out of sorts, and a full recovery only worked if kept to schedule.
For his health, you told yourself as the two of you walked out of the room hand in hand.
*
“Dear Esteemed Doctor,
By the time you receive this letter, I will no longer be in your reality. I have been called back with urgent news and must return post haste. Please accept my humblest apologies for the sudden leave. If I had the time, I would have stayed to offer you my aid at any cost. With your Emperor under your care, I have no doubt that the next step with our alliance will be needing as much resources and command as possible. Rallying the forces as soon as possible will be difficult, though if there is any advice I may impart with, it is this:
Galra are survivors, through and through.
When civil wars raged upon our brothers and sisters, history has repeatedly shown that it is not the toughest fighter who wins. Rather, it is the one who fights to protect the one at their side.
I look forward to seeing you once more in the near future. Please, stay safe.
Sincerely,
Lotor”
His handwriting was eloquent, not a curve or line extending awkwardly in the entire paragraph. At first glance, anyone would take in the script as romantic at face value, but the prose itself was completely opposite. He wasn’t here anymore and, as the Black Lion Paladin, of course the he had to tend to his duties. With Voltron, no doubt a shining beacon of hope for those suffering in his reality, he couldn't risk squandering his time.
You folded the letter then pocketed it in your coat, waiting for orders from Emperor Lotor, who was sitting at the helm of the ship and staring deeply off into space. Kylan had updated him about the current situation. Colonies displaced, warlords razing worlds for their own, Haggar’s search for him. That last one put him on edge. Yes, he’s well aware you worked for her, but he is also aware of your need for self-perseverance.
Or perhaps, it was for a completely different reason? If Sincline utilizes memories from souls, then he should’ve seen his mother’s memories mixed in yours, as well. Assuming, of course, you were brainwashed like his previous...
Lotor isn't such a naive fool to believe you would never lie in the face of certain death. He caught on faster than expected, knowing full well that sometimes telling people what they want to hear is for your own benefit, not theirs. Manipulation was often a tactic swept under the rug and reserved for those who were labeled as cowardice rats. Weak. Not strong enough. Not smart enough.
No. Not you, though. In the short time he’s known you, words were your choice of weapon in a fight. And apparently, his mother was desperate enough to fall for your schemes. One day, he’d compliment you on such a ruse. One day, he’ll tell you that she was actually the one who gave birth to him. How would you take it, he wonders? Anger at leaving the minor details out? Distrust? Betrayal?
“-of Marmora have gone underground. There has been news of Voltron recently en route to Earth months ago in response to Sendak’s battalion overthrowing the planet. Olkarion has been devastated by unknown forces and survivors have been scattered. Currently, no one has claimed the throne at the main headquarters and the next crowning ceremony will begin in but a few short weeks. Many separated factions are - “
Lotor had options. Many paths he could take to begin repairing the split and broken empire. He could free planets that were overtaken by warlords, spreading hope and securing rogue armies. No, that was what Voltron did and they failed to protect those they promised. Perhaps return to headquarters then declare his status as alive? He will certainly have more resources at his hand then. But no, Haggar and her spies would discreetly sabotage his throne.
Recruit the scattered Alteans? No, he doesn’t have the forces necessary to defend them all right now. They were safer with their captains, fortified with the necessary firepower and supplies. What of the Blades of Marmora? Should he spend valuable time searching for them? Their espionage skills will be most beneficial, especially with their network of spies spread out all over the universe. Then again, what about Voltron?
What about Voltron, indeed.
In truth, Voltron had more use as a gun than anything else. Perhaps there were still people faithful that it was their savior, their answer to all this despair and death in the galaxy. Yes, he could save them. That fight when he was piloting Sincline showed him where Voltron’s strength truly lies: as a false ray of hope. It was weak, in more ways than one.
However, the problem with saving Voltron would confuse many people. If he were to align with them again, that would leave many to doubt his role as a leader and the Emperor of the Galra Empire. He would lose support in the time of need and Voltron itself wasn't good enough to go around. He needed numbers and he would take a loyal military over a disillusioned vigilante any day.
A conundrum, indeed.
“Doctor, Kylan. A moment of your time, please.”
The Emperor ordered the rest of the crew around to give you three some much needed privacy. You stood at his left, Kylan at his right, both in silence. It was no surprise that just like Lotor, you were already calculating what the best course of action would be. Or at least, the best without risking potential deaths and destruction.
 “Sir, rallying the Blades would greatly help connect our network with those still loyal to the throne. Although it may take some valuable time to search for their leader and the rest of their members,” Kylan took a deep breath before continuing, “We simply do not have the power alone to protect the Colony and the entirety of the universe, let alone the upcoming war with the other reality.”
Lotor glanced at you from the corner of his eye, awaiting your input. While Kylan’s plan was sound, he couldn't afford to make a hasty decision so soon.
“Sendak has taken over Earth, where Voltron currently resides. I don’t know the lore following the mech, whether the pilots need to be dead before the lions accept a new paladin, but leaving a nuclear cannon that can rip holes into other realities is not something we should leave to a power-hungry warlord. Find out if the paladins are alive. If they are, fight Sendak with both Voltron and Sincline on your side.”
“And if they are not?” the Emperor asked, partly curious about how you would react to your friends dying and partly curious as to why Earth, the one place you didn't want to return to, was even an option you’d consider.
“If not, then…” you trailed off, “If not, steal one of the lions. Voltron cannot be formed without all 5 pieces together. At the very least, it will prevent Sendak from using it to its full potential, regardless if he has located new paladins.”
“Stealing requires stealth. Something the Blades can provide,” Kylan interjected.
“A distraction works just as well. Drawing Sendak’s eyes off of Earth, even for a short time, will give us a small chance to enact our plan,” you countered, then placed a finger on your lips in thought, “If Sincline can attack his battalion, that’s more than enough attention to keep Sendak on a trail.”
Lotor found both plans sound, but there was a small problem, “Sendak will not take the bait. He fights with the ferocity of a thousand suns, but he views a proper battle for the throne as an honor. To taunt him to fight me, use my status as alive in order to claim rights over the empire is not how he views righteous combat.”
“You are the Emperor. If strength is not what determines loyalty, then perhaps it is better to show him with fealty and duty.”
You knew little to nothing about Galra culture, but that letter folded in our pocket did tell you one thing: Galra are not savages. Their history goes beyond blood and guts and gore. It’s a mystery you hope to read about one day, discover how wise veterans compare to the current warriors of the Empire. If what Lotor says is true, then maybe one of the strongest warlords in the galaxy will yield to the rightful emperor.
“Very well. Here is my thought: Kylan and I will send for a search party to locate the Blades of Marmora. They will need this ship and I will not risk the Alteans on board near Sendak’s sights. While we are carrying out our side of the plan, doctor, you will go to Earth and infiltrate the military base as a slave. Give us the details of where the lions are and generally pass on the intel about what is going on. Because you are human, I would imagine it would be quite a simple task for you to blend in,” Lotor bit the inside of his cheek, “Blend in carefully. You are going into the mouth of the beast, after all. From there, we go either two ways: take a lion or confront Sendak. I will leave that judgement up to you, doctor.”
“It’s risky. I don’t suppose you know how long it would take for you two to find the Blades?” you questioned, though already knowing the answer.
Kylan pinched the bridge of his nose, “No. We are not even sure if the Blades still exist. If that be the case, then we should have a back up plan.”
“Regardless of how this turns out, doctor, we will need updates about Voltron and Sendak. Can you handle this on your own?” came Lotor’s final question, but there was a hint of...concern visible in his tone.
Earth, the place you were born in. Earth, the place you left behind for good. Earth, the place soon to be used as a slavery planet for Sendak’s militaristic needs. You’re not heartless. You don’t like the idea of death and destruction on any planet. And that’s what Earth was to you, after spending so many years away, it was just another planet. The attachments you had all died with your father.
For what reason did you have to keep any ties with the land? This was for the safety of the universe and much more.
“Yes. yes, I can. Just don’t leave me behind if things take a turn for the worst.”
Again.
*
 There was a knock at your door, drawing you to pause from packing what little belongings you had into a rucksack.
“Come in.”
And so he did, all of his tall glory stepping into your meager room. Bland, plain, empty and void of sentimentality. Lotor wonders faintly if you lived your entire life like this, with little color and even littler personality. It looked remarkably like the room back on the Castle of Lions. The door behind him closed slowly, but he had no intention of leaving soon anyways.
“Was there something important I missed?”
Lotor stayed silent, watching you and trying to think of how to exactly say his thoughts. He was a man of action when the time was right and right now? Part of him was choking at the very thought of you being alone on a planet ruled by Sendak. His heart screamed at him when he suggested the plan, calling him a fool, an idiot, a bastard that keeps risking those he loves -
No. No, it wasn't love. He had to remind himself that. It was NOT love.
If it wasn't, then why did you come here?
Wordlessly, he bent over to unclasp his boots and pile them neatly by your door. Next came his gloves, followed by his waist cape, and then the rest of his armor until he was standing before you in nothing but his skin-tight body suit. The entire time, you watched in silence with only the beating of your heart getting louder and faster in your chest.
The heart wants. The heart yearns.
“May I stay here tonight?” he asked, but surely he already knew you would say yes. Surely he did. Surely you would.
With a soundless nod, you slipped off your coat then hung it up, just for tonight. Not a doctor, not a soldier, not fighting, not running. Just...being. Existing. Like when trapped inside Sincline’s simulation, except this will be real. Was it okay to do that one more time?
Lotor slipped under the sheets with you, trapping you between the wall and his solid frame. He was never one to call himself a man who hesitates, but he did exactly that when he cautiously slid an arm over your waist to pull you closer. Closer still, until his chest was flushed with your back and his nose nuzzled the top of your head. This let him take in your scent, as if trying to burn it in his memories.
That’s when it clicked. As much as part of you wanted this, you needed it. You both did, after cheating death together. The way he held you tight. The way you leaned into him. He was … scared, just like you. There was no certainty you would not be killed, nor him surviving the trek to find the Blades. You two just found each other again and, while your partnership before wasn't deemed as together, as someone to fight alongside the other, the idea of being separated so soon started to leave an uneasy tension in the air.
There were other ways. More safer, less isolating. He could come with you. Or you can stay with him. Strength in numbers, right?
Oh, where did the confidence go?
Gentle fingertips touched over his knuckles, asking permission to hold, to thread together and seal an unspoken vow between you two. A promise that you can do this, that he will find the Blades, that everything so far is only the beginning and it will work out in the end. It was two simple words. Just two.
Trust me.

So I finished Age of Calamity
[spoilers]
Thanks to the beauty of holiday time off I have logged in 40 plus hours into this game and just beaten it, so naturally I’m gonna talk about it a bit. I’ll save the spoiler stuff for a little later though.
The game
This game might be my favorite game of 2020, or at least top three. Not just because of the world, but because everything is over the top! So far I’ve done 131 missions and 90% has the consistent energy of “we are fucking under attack” and it’s almost overwhelming in the best way possible. It really felt like you were on a battlefield field. Your map is just a sea of red and it’s your job to clean it up. What kept me engaged in the fights was all of the character’s different uses runes. I found myself constantly ordering my teammates to face certain enemy types that match best with how they fight.
Originally, I really wanted to be fair and rotate between characters. That didn’t last long. Mipha and Link in my opinion don’t have a single bad move. The bias only got worse whenever the master sword is obtained. Before that, my Link had a spear most of the time but that sword is just handy. Especially with item drop rate and attack range on it. In the end, my strongest characters were Link 74, Mipha 70, Impa 60, and Zelda 60. It’s been awhile since I played the first hyrule warriors so I can’t remember if they had the level up system were you can pay for experience but or definitely came in handy. Combine that with how many guardians were in this game and I quickly found out I needed Link with a shield on a regular bases. I also learned I didn’t forget how to time a vase amount of blocks and dodges.
The amount of characters you get to play quickly became too massive for me to juggle, but they all had their own merits for the most part, though I did find a few of the gimmick characters a bit of a hassle. My opinion on who was viable was constantly changing as I unlocked more combos. Originally, wasn’t the biggest fan of Urbosa. That second and fifth combo modifier changed everything.
The real portion of the game that really kept me wanting to play more was not only the ability to order other people, but seeing them fight along side you. I’m a softie for things like this, but genuinely felt relieved or hyped whenever I was fighting something crazy and I can see Impa rushing over towards me while text from soldiers scream “Just keep pushing!!!!” The AI wasn’t dumb either! There’s plenty of moments that controllable and NPC characters will just go where they’re supposed to, or kill targeted enemies. I remember not wanting to switch over to Link because he had low health, so as I’m running over to him as Mipha to heal him, the madman kills the Lynel. Ran all the way over there to watch him flex. That combined with elemental reactions you can cause in a fight, and the entire spectacle just felt elevated. The feeling of fighting three Lynel’s at once becomes a little less scary when you have a lightning rod and puddles everywhere.
The only negative I found in a gameplay perspective is some of the resource gathering. Gaining the trophy notes for killing a type of enemy isn’t too much of a hassle, but I found getting the materials they drop to be a bit harder, even with increased drop rate statuses. Most of this I find irritating for two reasons. One, specialized enemies show up in relatively small groups in a majority of missions, so getting things from them could be a flop altogether. Number two, a fair amount of these missions take a decent chunk of time if you’re being thorough and killing as much as possible. So grinding is a pain. Fortunately most missions a majority of what you need . If the game wanted chu chu jelly, I knew one of the missions coming up had chu chu as an enemy. You could also keep track of what you needed with material sensor that told you when you had enough.
The story
I’ll be honest, I was upset with this game for a hot second. It was advertised as a prequel to BoTW and while sad, I was truly invested to playing the events that lead to the fall of the champions. What this game didn’t tell you is it’s like most LoZ games, on its own separate part of the timeline. This isn’t the story of they lost. It’s the story of how they win, thanks to the little adorable robot mascot that has the ability to not only show the future, but bring people from the future; the champion’s descendants. At first I was upset with this. Mainly because I’m a little tired of time travel plots and it felt really out of place here. However, time travel gave way more to this game than what I expected this game to have in the first place. It allowed at least six more playable characters that wouldn’t have been possible in the other timeline, and a wellspring of interactions through missions. Every time Mipha was with Sidon, I smiled. Having Urbosa being this super encouraging role model to Riju was so nice since BoTW had expressed just how much those two admired and missed those people. Revali was nice to Teba! They were vibing. Even the soldier commentary on the new champions were a treat. So I got over the time travel issue pretty quick. It made things sad as well when the new generation leaves because they’re going back to a time where they lost it all. There was no great union that took place across hyrule to fight Ganon and their beloved champions failed. I do appreciate that the diverge in the timeline really takes place on the day they’re supposed to die, moments before the final blow. It still lets the player see the definitive moment where good was supposed to lose.
The “new” villain is meh. I wouldn’t really say he stands out. His entire thing is thinking he’s gonna win because he doesn’t realize that he isn’t seeing hyrule’s future. He’s seeing another hyrule’s future. What comes out of his character is cool though because it gives a different, yet same finale boss. I wasn’t expecting to basically fight a giant Ganondorf. Honestly, you can kinda say you fought Demise. At least aesthetically speaking. Or Yuga. This game has also made me care about robot. Something I haven’t done in awhile. A few scenes near the end felt hammy, but also amazingly realistic to how a lot of people would feel when someone breaks your favorite thing. The war was already personal, but now it’s really personal. Quests open up after the game that plays on those emotions too. It’s very clever.
Overall, Age of Calamities story felt like a love letter to everyone who loves this rendition of hyrule and the characters in it. They even another one named Sooga, who just might be my favorite. That man has no choice but to be the brain and muscle of the Yiga. It kinda makes me sad he’s introduced here because you can assume he didn’t make it in the other timeline, so he has no descendents. The amount of serotonin I felt just seeing all of these characters fighting together as the absolutely conquer the battlefield was more than satisfying. Definitely worth the money. I don’t know if they can, but Nintendo might wanna consider some sort of audio patch. The mixing is bad in certain parts. Voice lines get really quiet. Other than that, this game is real solid. I’d give it an 8.5/10
Side note
The music is really good. Especially the Zoe’s demain track. Also, I never noticed frame rate dropping or lag, except on two occasions. Both of these happened to be me pushing the game to its limits. The first is being surrounded by enemies in a small space as Mipha. Creating the water vortex and raining down bombs makes the game wanna cry a little. The second one is a similar case. Sidon’s fifth or sixth combo made the made the game drop frames because it’s incredibly fast, involves timing, makes a vortex, and i was in a small space with tons of enemies. Other than that, not even Urbosa’s or Riju’s lightning made the game freak out from what I noticed. That may have something to do with me never using them in a place where there’s constant rain. That might actually be the cause of the drop in combination of everything else.

Osomatsu-kun Hachamecha Gekijou Review
Tumblr media
(Author’s warning: the following game contains racially insensitive stereotypes. They are not present in these screencaps, and are not the effect of the game’s relatively low score. The game is a product of its time not just on a technical level, but on a cultural level. If you choose to read this review, massive spoiler alert: this is just not a good game, no matter how you slice it.)
In Japan, the Mega Drive debuted in October of 1988 with a whopping two titles available at launch; Space Harrier 2, and Super Thunder Blade. It wouldn’t take long for the humble 16-bit console to get its third title, a licensed game based on the Osomatsu-Kun manga which was about to get a new anime adaptation thanks to its popularity coming back. So you’re probably thinking this is a cheap cash-in title designed to promote the new anime, and I would like to say you’re right, but... actually, no, you’re right. Osomatsu-Kun Hachamecha Gekijou (Little Osomatsu: Nonsensical Theater) is a cheap cash-in that does more harm than good for the Mega Drive.
Tumblr media
Before we dive into this game, let’s talk about Osomatsu-Kun itself. Osomatsu-Kun was a hugely popular manga about a group of trouble making sextuplets, who just so happen to all look the same. The manga ran for a whopping seven years back in the 60′s, receiving an anime adaptation at the peak of its popularity in 1966. In 1988, Studio Pierrot would bring forth a new anime adaptation that would see the sextuplets as side characters, with characters Iyami and Chibita, and their misadventures becoming more of the main focus. So seeing the side characters get thrust into the spotlight because they become popular is definitely nothing new, especially when the original manga did the same! So now that we have a new anime adaptation on the way, what are we getting for our video game cash in?
Tumblr media
Well... just look at it. I know Japan is notorious for making some pretty surreal stuff, but Osomatsu-Kun Hachamecha Gekijou takes the fucking cake. You play as the oldest of the six brothers, and go on a quest to... uh, you know, I don’t think this game really has much of a story to it. You go through three different stages trying to get from point A to point B while you, armed with a slingshot, take out enemies based on other characters in Osomatsu-Kun, a lot of them being Chibita. And yes, you heard right, this game is only 3 stages long, so it should be quick and easy, right? Well... sit down, this game pads itself out in the worst possible way, and it managed to piss me off.
Tumblr media
As you progress through a level, you may think it’s as simple as reaching the end of a stage... it’s not. Remember the infamous maze level in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, or the one in Transformers Comvoy no Nazo? Well, there is a specific route you’re expected to take in this game, and it’s not clear. You’ll play this game going from point A to point B, but once you reach a certain point, the screen will just stop allowing you to move forward. You’ll see yourself before a pit, and think it’s instant death. In this game, it’s not death, it just leads you to a different part of the level. However, the path you need to take is cryptic as hell, and you’ll never know if you’re going the right way. The only way to find out is to take out the correct sub boss. When you do, you’ll see an intermission bumper like you would for anime, and you’ll ask yourself “Wait, am I just going through the first level again?” The answer is partially yes, because remember that point where the screen wouldn’t let you advance? Well, now you will see a platform show up that can take you to a new part of the level, but now you need to find a new path to get to point B. All of this is designed to pad the game’s extraordinarily short length. By short, I mean that if you know your way through all three levels, you can finish this game in about 15 minutes.
Tumblr media
(Thank you to the person who put this shit together)
I’d be able to forgive the maze-like structure if the game was any fun to play, but as it stands, this is a painfully generic floaty platformer. By floaty I mean Osomatsu himself defies gravity by being able to float in the air for an extended period of time with his jump. It’s nice to be able to control his jump mid-air, but the weightlessness will more than likely mess up your precision platforming, or you’ll get interrupted by the mere touch of your enemies. Yes, when you take damage, you get stun-locked, and instead of just falling to the ground, you are stun locked mid-air. I could forgive it, but this game is once again, a 30 frames per second game, and almost feels like it’s been slowed-down intentionally. Another issue I take with this game is the difficulty, it’s way too easy. All enemy projectiles can be destroyed with your slingshot, and there’s enough distance between you and the enemy to have a pattern figured out easily. I guess the idea was because your slingshot has such a short range of attack, it would balance things out, but it really doesn’t. You’ll have plenty of lives and health to go up against the boss and sub boss as the game gets fairly generous with health powerups. There are also shops where you can buy some items to guide you with the ribbons you’re collecting along the way, but before you can access that you get the option of playing mini-games to gamble them away. I’d just skip these and go straight to the shop, it’s not like you need these power-ups that much anyway, you can beat this game without them.
Tumblr media
On the visual side... this was the worst the Mega Drive had in 1988. Sure, it’s colorful, and the sprites evoke the spirit of the original manga, but this looks like a hold over from the Master System/Mark III, it just doesn’t impress me. Aesthetically, the game is fine for the most part, but eventually you’ll run into a few racial stereotypes for your enemies, and boy are they horribly insensitive. Even knowing this, I pressed on with the game, because I wanted to see if I could take something positive out of it and look past those enemy sprites, and about the only thing I find entertaining is Iyami being all the bosses. So aside from a few bad sprites, I find the graphics were more focused on aesthetics and functionality than pushing technical limitations early. Audio wise this game is just plain awful. There’s an old saying among video game music fans that only Japan could use the Mega Drive’s unique sound setup correctly, but if that’s the case, they’ve never listened to this game’s music. It’s obnoxiously loud, the sound effects are super scratchy, it feels too much like an assault on my ears compared to the sound effects on something like Curse, or even Taz-Mania. Nothing against the compositions themselves, I found two songs to be catchy, but otherwise, nothing stood out for the right reasons. Definitely not a keeper.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, Osomatsu-Kun Hachamecha Gekijou is shovelware of the highest honor. Even if you can endure the game’s painfully easy difficulty, and frustrating level layouts, you are left with a feeling of emptiness by the time you reach the end. This game will not so much break you, but it will leave you feeling empty and depressed as you say to yourself, “that’s it?” I certainly felt empty after playing this. Like I just lost about 20 minutes of my life, and I’ll never get it back. Is there much worse on the Mega Drive? Yes, but considering it was 1988, the console had nowhere to go from here but UP. I wouldn’t even think of recommending this today, even as a curiosity. This is one of those cases where I can say avoid at all costs
Positives
+ Aesthetics mimic the source material perfectly
+ Controls respond
+ The game’s translated subtitle “Nonsensical Theater” perfectly describes everything
Negatives
- Unnecessarily pads its length thanks to a cryptic maze structure
- Unacceptably short
- Insults your skill by being piss easy
- Racial stereotyping may be enough to turn you away
- Designed to cash in on Osomatsu-Kun’s returning popularity in the 80′s
- The game’s translated subtitle “Nonsensical theater” perfectly describes everything
- Audio will hurt your ears
- Unless you need to complete an actual Mega Drive collection... skip it.
- While taking screenshots, I somehow managed to unlock the game’s framerate, indicating that this game was deliberately programmed in assembly to play at 30 frames per second. The floaty mechanics actually handled better under 60 fps, no fucking joke. Do you believe this shit?
Overall: 2/10

"Snapped" (Mammon writing piece) part 2
Thank you to @bluelipsblueveins-blue for a MC POV for this AU. It will not be cannon toward this part 2, I really am sorry. It was hard to connect all the pieces.
WARNINGS: Blood, cursing, badly written fight scenes, bad grammar, sad boys
-
The video of the third strongest demon filled the trending charts in minutes, capturing the attention of every demon. It was the hottest topic in a while and everyone was here for it.
It was treated like a bidding game, who will be more dead? The otaku or the sleepy cowboy? Mammon did not know how much money was going to be in his wallet after this.
Levi had passed out and Mammon sighed. He looked at the crowd around him and winced at the MC’s expression. Their expression seemed to be a mixture of surprise, pride, fear, and shock. It was common knowledge around devildom that demons could take a lot. He should know more than anyone else that fact.
He stood up and growled. Only the face of Belphegor flashed in his mind and he was gone with a cloud of darkness.
-
Belphie was drowsily shaken awake from his slumber as lesser demons shouted in his ears. He scowled softly but still raised his head to see what all the fuss was about.  A bunch of bright lights swarmed his vision, and after a split second, he realized it they were D.D.D’s.
“Belphador! Watch the video,”, “No! Watch my screen!” and “Hey! Watch mine.” flooded his ears as he growled again. His patience was running thin.
Then one bumbling idiot seemed to take the gold cup when he shoved his D.D.D straight into Belphie’s face.
It took five seconds until the idiot was underneath Belphie (both with power and physically) as Belphie sat on his back. The screen showed a bunch of smoke, looking pretty low quality. A play button was waiting to be pressed, and Belphie tapped it.
Silence filled the quiet classroom as the messed up audio played. It contained the cracking of Levi’s skull, a bunch of cement breaking, and the shakily shot video.
The person who was recording it was shaking from fear.
Everyone awaited the reaction of the soon to be the prey of the rage, and they were satisfied with a bug-eyed Belphie that felt cold. Sweat collected on the back of his neck and his hands were slightly shaking.
No one has ever seen the ever sleepy demon like this.
It really was time for a good fight.
-
Smoke flourished throughout the room, making everyone jump from surprise or fear. Two golden eyes were the only thing seen if you dared look. Two flaps from his wings sounded his arrival and also clearing the smoke. Very efficient.
All the fellow demons stood around, looking shell shocked by him actually being here. Some figured he would be calmed down.
I guess they were so wrong.
Mammon's cold eyes looked around the room, whenever he looked at someone, it felt like they were stuck in place.
He noticed rather quickly the demon that was roughed up by Belphegor, even when he was hiding behind a crowd of others. The demon felt his attention and slowly took a step backward, only to bump into someone.
His breath was caught in his throat as the demon slowly turned around, body shaking and heartbeat quickening. He was met by two golden eyes.
On reflex, his demon form was triggered. Mammon smirked at the sight.
"Oh, I mean no harm too you.." Mammon said, his voice low and calculating, "just tell me where the demon who attacked you is?"
-
Belphegor was running down an empty hall, breathing hard as he tried to run away.
Wrong choice.
He was thrown into a wall of lockers, the metal clashing loudly with impact. Belphegor groaned quietly, trying to get up, but he was met with a kick.
He was sent back into the dented lockers, his head knocking into the metal. He is left with moments to react, so he steps away from the lockers.
It is eerily silent, not a trace of Mammon anywhere. Belphegor's eyes roamed around the room, moving forward to the middle of the room.
He listened to the quiet, waiting for anything.
Belphegor's patience was answered as Mammon leg made contact with Belphegor's kneecap, making him hiss and fell to his other knee.
With his guard down, Mammon used both fists to the back of his brother's head. A loud smack rang out throughout the hallway.
Belphegor cried out, reflex tears stinging his eyes. Blood was coughed up, meeting the cracked title floor. It was not over yet.
Mammon kicked him down and was about to deliver a left hook until a handheld him back.
The demon growled, looking back to see Satan holding back his elbow. His eyes were glowing green.
How dare he.
-
Satan was now against some lockers, a long wound along his side and left eye bleeding continuously, Beelzebub collapsed on the ground with a broken nose, and Asmodeus' arm broken as he was unconscious.
Mammon barely had a scratch, only a bruise on his hip and a nose bleed.
Belphegor was on the ground, weakly trying to crawl toward Beel. His arms kept giving out on him, his eyes pathetically tearing up.
"Awh," Mammon's cold voice echoed through the hall, his footsteps the only other sound. "I wonder how it feels to be so powerless.."
He kicked Belphegors down from his semi crawling. Mammon rolled his eyes.
"Oh yes, I do." Mammon crouched down to meet the beaten demons' eyesight. "Remember how many times I was in your position? How many times I did absolutely nothing but met Luci's wrath for your enjoyment?"
His eyes flashed, but Mammon stayed calm.
"Now you know what happens when I get pushed too far. Gold is not the only thing I am greedy for. I also like justice."
"If this is what you think is justice, you might be dumber then I thought," Belphegor snickered, but his voice cracked.
Mammon twitched. On impulse, he went to punch Belphegor when he felt two arms wrap around his back.
"Mammon… p-please don't." That voice..
The voice that he spent so many nights listening too, the laughter that Mammon loved.
The voice that belonged to Mammon's only hope.
Mammon felt his body shake, his breath hitching. His arm dropped as his blood-covered hands held the arms that crossed his torso.
As the warmth of their body comforted him, the gravity of the situation fell upon him.
"O-oh fuck-!" Mammon gasped, his eyes wide as he looked over his brothers. He felt his heartbreak as his demon form dropped. His hands shook as he reached out toward Belphie.
"I-i.." he felt tears rise to his eyes, the world-shattering before him.
Mammon collapsed, MC jumping back from the movement.
"M-mammon?" MC lightly shook him, their hands on his side. The only response they got was a hiccup and a ragged sob.
Mammon had broke. Completely.

R.O.S.E-6???
Tumblr media
oh god okay so this one is a long one. But basically: Ruby is the robot built by Atlas to save the world and harness the power of the Silver Eyes, on Summer’s request. Tai and Yang are designated to be her family, so that she can feel the right amount of love in order to awaken the Silver Eyes. James does his best to support them, Ruby gets the best training with the Ace Operatives, the best equipment, and plenty of time to spend with her family. (Qrow, in an inverse to his canon self, dotes on Yang. She is by far the favourite niece. He really hates Ruby as well. Unfortunate!)
Ruby 6.0 gets to go to the Vytal Festival in Beacon, it should be a safe, low-stakes, risk-free test against some other Huntsmen, she can see the world, experience new things, and really get a chance to see what it’s like to be human.
Penny, for her part, grew up in Patch as the daughter of famed inventor and doctor, Pietro Polendina. Having lost her family to Grimm when she was too young to remember it, Penny is a prodigy fighter who built her weapons, Heartstrings, together with her father, who implanted the neural chip she uses to fight with them. Good enough to get into Beacon two years ahead of schedule, Pietro asked his live-in apprentice Ciel to go with Penny, just to make sure she didn’t get herself in trouble.
They get teamed up with Winter Schnee, the proud middle child of the Schnee family and the spare to her elder sister Weiss’s heir, and Sienna Khan, a faunus runaway who has a bone to pick with everyone. Things go... predictably poorly.
Because this is kinda long, I’ll actually be putting the snippet under the cut, along with some character sheets! I’m not sure if I’ll ever write this but if I ever get round to it it’ll probably be more of a collection of oneshots with a vague plot, but I do like the idea
~~~~~~~~~~
PROJECT R.O.S.E SUBJECT: RUBY 6.0 TESTING: COMBAT CAPABILITIES OVERSEEN BY: GENERAL J. IRONWOOD NOTES TAKEN BY: DR V. SHELL
Ruby stood in the simulation room, facing across from Captain Ebi and Lieutenant Ederne. Captain Ebi smiled at her, Lieutenant Ederne doing the same with a massive grin that invoked similar feelings of warmth as Yang’s smile.
“You ready, kiddo?” Captain Ebi rested his weapon on his shoulder, Ruby’s silver eyes flicking to it as her databanks ran schematics in her head.
[Kingfisher: Huntsman-class weapon. Fishing pole with razor wire line, melee form. Hook can be used for mobility. Harpoon function stored in back of hilt. No gun format; razor wire provides ranged attack]
She raised her right arm, the black metal of her forearm shifting and altering so her wrist cannon emerged, ready for combat. “Yes sir.”
“Ruby, you don’t have to call me ‘sir’,” Captain Ebi reminded her, Lieutenant Ederne giving her a thumbs up beside him as she hefted her weapon in one hand.
[Timber: Huntsman class weapon. Two-handed warhammer, Ederne’s strength makes her capable of wielding one-handed. Thrusters can be activated to maximise attack output. Rocket launcher for ranged format- AVOID AT ALL COSTS]
The last words had been added to the databanks after Ruby 4.0 had been broken in a training session. Lieutenant Ederne had been very apologetic, Specialist Bree had told Ruby that Ederne had been driven to the point of tears by what she had done.
Ruby hadn’t really been bothered by it, after all, she could easily be rebuilt. Even better, Mr Ironwood had her databanks wiped of the actual recordings of her deaths whenever she was rebuilt. It felt like it happened to a Ruby that wasn’t her. In a way, it did. She was never the same between incarnations, but she watched the audio-visual data of her previous models so she could learn from them and do better.
She was built to save the world, after all. That was her job. She was built to be a hero.
Ruby blinked up at General Ironwood, overseeing this test with a smile. She would not disappoint him, nor her father. She wanted to test her strength in the Vytal Tournament, and see more of the world.
She turned her cheerful smile to Captain Ebi and saluted playfully. “Yes sir!”
“Sienna Khan. Penny Polendina. Ciel Soleil. Winter Schnee. The four of you retrieved the white queen pieces, and from this day on, you’ll be known as team PSCS.” Ozpin smiled at Penny, who felt her heart metaphorically swell with pride and joy. “Led by Penny Polendina.”
“Thank you, Mr Ozpin!” Penny beamed at him, the neural implant on her forehead gleaming silver under the spotlights.
Ciel patted her shoulder, a faint smile crossing her features before she hid it behind her usual professionalism. “Good job, Penny.”
“I can’t believe I’m stuck with some riffraff faunus,” Winter scoffed, her white hair pulled back in a severe bun as she stood tall, glaring down at their fourth teammate.
Sienna snarled back, tiger ears pinned flat to her head and inked stripes lining her bare arms. “Oh you better keep your eyes open, Schnee,” she said it with all the venom of a slur, “cause the moment you drop your guard I’m taking that gaudy sword of yours and skewering you on it.”
“I’d like to see you try, beast.” Winter hissed back, the air around the two fraught with violent intent.
Penny blinked and looked at Ciel. “They’ll be best friends once we begin to do friendship things,” she affirmed.
“If you say so.” Ciel didn’t look convinced.
Luz is Shabranigdo !?
Chapter 4
Sorry it’s been a while, this chapter was uncooperative.. Gonna take a nap..
“So Eda’s ancestor met me in Atlantis…” Luz sat down on a nearby stump. She felt herself struggling to smile.. It was a small light in comparison to the destruction that happened.. Yet, Eda the second closest thing she had to a mother and the most wonderful person she had met was born because of those past actions.. Who knows maybe there were other small lights? “She ended up becoming a witch.. “
“You know the Clawthorne Family has been a very prominent family.. History changing in fact…”
“Really?”
“Yup.. They were responsible for a lot of reformations..” Amity had a look of pride in her eyes.. Her eye’s grew a little sad as nostalgia grew in her thoughts.. She used to consider it an honor to study under Lilith.. “They broke down a lot of caste systems.. Put an end to a lot of insane laws.. People called them Heroes… Sadly much of their changes were undone by the rise of Emperor Belos.. But, when people think powerful witches from ancient history they tend to think Lina Inverse-Clawthorne..”
“I think I remember her..” Luz blushed at the memory of the most tsundere witch she could remember. “She and Gourry were so in love, but he was so dumb..” She laughed at the memory of their arguments, chases, and how they fought over food.. “It took a long time for him to actually realize that much less confess it..”
“Reaally?”
“Yeah it took end of the world nonsense..” Luz shook her head in utter disappointment at that kind of boneheaded ignorance. “You know.. I originally thought the reason I was.. punished was darker.. That I tried to destroy the world for the laughs...”
“Yeah I heard..” Amity gazed at Luz with concern and worry.. “Don’t forget we just saw that your soul was literally ripped apart seven ways.. Soul fragmentation can make people unstable.. Memories can get jumbled up even when the pieces go back when they’re supposed to be.. My guess is the memories of your punishment got mixed with the memories of your later fragments.”
“I hope there’s not gonna be anymore problems..”Luz turned away from Amity. This had been a harrowing experience and Eda had pushed Amity to go through it with her.. Letting her see all these issues.. It grated on certain learned instincts.
“Hey don’t worry Luz.. We’re with you.. Okay?”
“Okay..” Luz lit up again. She hugged Amity tightly before reaching into her pocket and pulled the bell. “Let’s go..” She rang it twice..
Seconds later…
Luz woke up to see Lilith chained with her staff currently lying in Eda’s grip. Amity got up not too soon after and a sour frown grew on her face..
“Lilith..”
“Amity..”
“You wanna run it by me how Luz was a threat to you and how that justified lethal force?”
“She’s the lord of darkness! Literally the source of all dark magic..”
“She was a fourteen year-old girl barely my age struggling with magic. No offense..”
“None taken..”
“And you had to the gall to kidnap her to threaten just to get an advantage over Eda. How is that civilized? How is that any better than how you say the wild witches were.. If her powers hadn’t woke up..”
“But, she didn’t die… Frankly I’m not certain anything could kill her..”
“You did all this to secure your place with a tyrant..”
“That’s treason..”
“Is it really treason if the civilization isn’t worth preserving? … eight hundred thousand people…”
“..Excuse me?” Lilith’s eyes narrowed as she looked at Amity with growing fear and desperation. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing her apprentice couldn’t know could she? “What are you talking about?”
“What does she mean Amity?”
“… Our population is dwindling Luz.. There are witches disappearing from time to time..” Amity pinned Lilith with a glare.. “Their palismans are taken, artifacts destroyed, and research burned.. He’s feeding on us isn’t he?”
“…..I won’t say another word..”
“Right because of your little collar..”
Everyone turned to look at Luz who was startled before rubbing the back of her head with an embarrassed smile.. “Ooh right sorry about that still have Atlantis on the brain.. The contract in her wrist reminds me of the sigil contracts the nobles used to use for their slaves… I mean the spell work is almost exactly alike… This is reaally uncomfortably for me now..”
“Wait you’re saying the coven system is based on Atlantean Slavery?”
“Basically? I mean think about it you can control any potential avenues for the middle class mages.. And keep them from being a potential threat by making them weaker..”
“In that case were would Lilith have been?” Eda grinned towards her sister eyes filled mischievous mirth
“A highly valued tutor or courtesan. Based on her limiters and tracking glyphs..”
“Courtesan?!” An infuriated Lilith growled.
“Limiter?!”
“Ha that’s rich imagine conservative Lilith as a courtesan..” Eda grinned as Lilith began to blush and fume.. She decided against pushing it any further given there kids in the room. “So not a noble?”
“I can’t really say Atlantean Witches were really weird about family lineage…” Luz had to resist the urge to facepalm. That ideology was so stupid.. Ceifeed had originally noticed a number of genetic illness arising from harmful genes.. He had repaired the damage, but complained about having to do it so often.. So he taught his priests how to fix the problems… Some people heard his words and went completely off the wall and started obsessing over linage and blood.. “If they knew about your ancestor originally being a human slave girl.. They’d get all twitchy.. That said no Nobles ever had them.. They were the only free mages who never wore such degrading things..”
“Ha looks like between you and me I’m the only nobility..” Eda laughed to herself.. “That said human ancestor?”
“Indeed please explain.”
“Edalin she was a first generation witch a real prodigy.. She was born human and acquired magic later in life..” Luz smiled as she thought fondly of the child. “Good kid glad to see she got to become a witch.”
“Wait Edalin the Uniter was a human slave girl?!” Lilith shouted with shock she suddenly felt lightheaded… And fainted..
“Uh Lilith?”
“Is she gonna be okay?”
“That used to happen to her a lot as kids..”
“Yeesh someone is a lightweight for heavy truths.” Luz shook her head with amusement.
“Yup.. By the way Amity your mom called I told you were spending some time with the dark lord doing some rituals here and she was welcome to pick you up but she backed off did for some strange reason..”
There was silence through the house. Amity looked afraid and worried. Her mom has come here to this place.. Her mother was always an unstoppable force of nature whenever she wanted to get something. It was the same with her father as well. Their way or no way.
“.. Uh Amity are your parents Ceifeed worshippers?” Luz questioned curiously.
“No they’re agnostic.. But, I think they may have seen your clash with Emperor Bellows so they definitely believe now…”
“Wait how would they have seen that?”
“Some activist group called anoma-witch broadcasted it on all our arcane transmissions… “ Amity smiled as she recalled the shock of her family. The twins had dropped their pancakes onto the floor Elmira cried shortly after.. Her father was aghast and shocked at the sheer gall of such an attack on the seat of their government. Her mother on the other hand she looked absolutely terrified.
“… Isn’t that a good thing?”
“Nooo!! I don’t want people using that spell!!!” Luz shouted in a panicked voice smashing her hand into the wall. She looked at the ground horrified remembering how that spell was gleefully and carelessly given to the Atlantean military branch who used to it conquer the surrounding nations.. She nearly started hyperventilating before Amity touched her shoulder.. Luz looked to Amity.. “Please tell me that words from that spell were scrubbed from the audio…”
“It actually was.. They must have known what would happen..”
“Thank goodness.. I can never use that spell again… It felt so right..” Luz looked horrified as she remembered how she felt in that moment that sadistic glee in her heart and the fear in Lilith’s eyes.. The thought of watching the life in her eyes drain away. She felt that dark magic wasn’t worth it.. “It’s so enticing, intoxicating, and I won’t use it again… And I don’t want anyone else to use it either..”
“Luz… You can’t be afraid of dark magic.. It’s literally half of all spells you use.. “ Amity invited Luz to sit with her.. Luz sighed before sitting next to the green haired witch.. “After the fall of Atlantis when the gods vanished.. Many of the the spells we witches used no longer functioned.. We were scared afraid that our powers would disappear one day yet they never did.. Magic persisted and grew stronger once more.. Eventually we discovered that much of your and Ceifeed’s energies had been infused in us and the earth.. And we learned how to mold and shape the magic you left us.. This is what mortal magic is… Yet despite it’s unpleasant origins it amazing and wonderful.. Dark magic your magic.. it’s half of what you love so much Luz.. You contributed to something wonderful so please don’t be afraid of it..”
“.. Yeah you’re right.. You know even at my worst when forced to I began to care for Edalin..” Luz perked up as she thought about all the friends that were supporting her throughout all of this. Willow, Gus, Eda, King, A-And Amity.. She looked at the green haired witch noting the gentleness and compassion.. “Thank you so much Amity..” She took of Amity tightly hugging her closely..
“You’re welcome..”
As the room was occupied with the drama no one noticed the flow of magic emanating from Lilith’s clothing. A quick concealment ward casted by the Emperor shielded his astral presence from detection.
“Well well Lilith you played your role magnificently. You were so terrified of me and concerned with warning your sister that you failed to notice the scrying sigils in your cloak..”Emperor Belos eyes glowed as he began to search for the Owl House for two things… He looked through the living room, before moving to the kitchen, and then through the various bedrooms. The Emperor would sigh in annoyance, as it turned out it seems the Owl lady kept the key on herself at all times.. But, on the other hand… The human’s device was left out on her desk.. “Little Luz you really must keep an eye on your personal effects like this.. “ He gingerly sunk a finger into the device and his mind began to tear through the meager password protection.. “Hmm Camilla Noceda..” Belos spent time his time reading through Luz’s texts learning what he could of her.
He began to laugh upon realizing that there was only one more thing necessary to force Luz into his plans.. A few minutes later he cut the connection from the scrying symbols.
The Emperor began to form a new spell using the evocative nature of Old Magic as a base for it.. “I call the one who brought forth the dawn. The one who tirelessly heals during the day and night. The blind one who does not understand the true nature of things..”
“Quaint..” Belos noted as a red circle began to form in the air before erupting into a portal.. It was unstable but it would last for his purposes.. “Let’s see..” He reached in and pulled hard retrieving a middle aged Dominican woman wearing a blue nurse’s outfit. “Ah now you must be Luz Noceda’s mother..” He smiled as a look of fear, recognition, and anger grew in the woman’s eyes at the mention of that name.
“Bastardo!! ¡¿Qué le hiciste a mi hija?!!” Camilla stopped speaking as the strange masked man began to shush her and she suddenly noticed how much bigger he was than her.. “What did you do to my daughter?! If you’ve hurt her!”
“I have done nothing of the sort, but I will if she doesn’t do exactly as I say..”
Meanwhile back at the Owl House…
Lilith woke up with a headache she was still in chains and her arms were getting pretty sore. She sighed and spun her fingers dematerializing the chains.
“Well done Lilith my faithful servant..”
“Emperor Belos… How are yo.. The Coven Brand..”
“Indeed.. You did just as I planned inform your sister and her apprentice that I have her mother..”
“Sir that’s..”
“Tell them that she will give me the key by midnight or I will have fun testing any number of lethal spells on human physiology..”
“….”
“Oh that reminds me by the way Lilith you’re fired. You can pick up anything you left behind here, but you’re no longer welcome to employment in my services.. Have fun doing whatever is you like to do in your spare time..”
“….” Lilith sat there in silence as the connection was severed.. She felt her world falling apart her hand shook as the coven glyph dissolved from her wrist. Years of sacrifice, constantly plotting, and countless hours of competing to stay at the top to be the Emperor’s most favored servant.. And this was her reward after giving him everything… A long distance banishment laced with false kindness.. Her head fell into her hands and she began to cry..
Eda Luz and Amity hearing Lilith crying approached her. They noticed she was free and Eda raised her staff, but then lowered it realizing that her tears were very much real. “Well this was awkward..”Eda really hoped this breakdown wasn’t about the deathhex she sent to Lilith’s mailbox..
“Uh Lilith?”
“I-I messed up… Belos told me I was free to go..” Lilith then slowly looked to Luz in fear.. “I never knew please believe I didn’t know..”
“What did you do?” Luz’s eyes narrowed as she glared at Lilith.
“… Belos placed several spells he was here seconds ago in astral form looking for the key.. He found the next best thing the location and name of your mother..”
“How?!”
“Even if that bonehead got that information it’s impossible for him to do anything with it..” Eda placed a calming hand on Luz’s shoulder. “Nothing will come of it.”
“You underestimate him Edalyn.” Lilith shook her head terror in her eyes. “Belos knows more about the ancient magic than most mortals.. He summoned your mother here..”
“How!! She’s not a mage, dragon, or demon?!” Luz couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Her mother the woman who flinched during Halloween had a presence in the astral realm strong enough to be summoned.. How was that even possible!?
“She gave birth to you.. You are the source of all black magic.. And in order to give birth to you your mother was altered enough to survive your reemergence into this world. That’s enough magic for certain summoning rituals to work.”
“… I have to go..”
“Luz..”
“It’s my mother!!” Luz screamed.. Her eyes glowed red as she made her way to the door dark bat-like wings began to form on her back.. “I’m going to find her..”
“Stop..” Eda sighed at her apprentice’s foolish attitude.. This was a trap more than likely he was planning something the question is what.. “I’ll fly us it’ll give us time to discuss a plan.”
“Thank you Edalyn..” She gave her a relived hug her wings disappeared as they dissolved into shadow.. Luz let go slowly and began to look towards the door with worry and concern.
“Your welcome..” Edalyn reassured her apprentice gently as they all walked together towards the door.
Belos’s palace…
“Go to hell!”
“Ha.. Tell me do you know what your daughter really is?”
“I know that she’s a better person than you’ll ever be..”
“Perhaps it’s all a matter of perspective.. Shabranigdo the demon god of darkness and in the ancient world the lord of black magic and in the modern world the source of dark magic..” Belos gestured towards an ancient demonic statue with fangs, horns, wings, and ruby eyes. Camilla stared at the strange relic wondering what the ancient history of this old god had to do with her and her family. “She was one of the patron gods of ancient Atlantis and sunk it when it served it’s purpose.. It’s half of all magic part of the very fabric of our being. And I plan to control it..”
“.. What do your stories have to do with my daughter!?”
“Tell me was her birth troublesome? Where there sudden storms on that day? Did ash began to fall from the sky when it was finally over?”
“… Yes..” Camilla was stunned by this stranger listing the various events that surrounded Luz’s birth. “I don’t see what that has to do with..”
“All three occurrences are symptoms of a demonic birth.. Usually if there it’s one it’s a common demon.. two occurrence mean a demon of considerable strength. Three occurrences.. The demon god was prophesied to display all three symptoms on the hour of it’s rebirth with a human as the mother.. Shabranigdo the progenitor of the demon race..”
“… Are you saying my daughter is the devil?” Camilla scoffed.
“… To many people she would be such.. she is the original destroyer… Countless civilizations have been destroyed by the spells she created.. Such is her purpose and nature..”
“You’re insane..”
“Maybe..” Belos shrugged uncaringly. “It doesn’t mean I am not right.”
Outside Belos’s Palace…
Luz Noceda approached the Emperor’s Palace alone the numerous guards moved aside all while her very presence caused the Emperor’s various scrying spells to leave specific blank spots for her friends to exploit.. Numerous restrictive spells around Luz collapsed as she was wreathed in a crimson dark aura. Numerous Witches felt the malevolence from her and backed away in fear.. Several flowers around the palace began to crumble into ash as they aged at an accelerated rate…
Kikimora guarded the chamber the Emperor was waiting in for Luz. She shook at the sheer malevolence in Luz’s presence ancient instincts told her that this was her progenitor, her maker..
“Move aside speck..” Luz spoke with an old cruel authority in her voice ..
“.. M-My lord awaits you..” The demonic woman stuttered as she stepped aside and the door opened for the dark god.
As Luz stepped forward she sighed Amity, Eda, and Lilith would have to move fast.. Belos was powerful she could feel his presence.. It felt corrupted so twisted in a way a mortal could not be.. He was feeding on something powerful enough to give even the greatest of her old servants an impossible task.. And she was comparatively inexperienced, granted she had immeasurable knowledge as the lord of black magic, but Luz couldn’t use that knowledge reliably due to the emotional baggage.. However.. She extended a hand and imagined the fire glyph before drawing a crimson circle.. A powerful fireball grew in her palm..
“Perfect..” Luz Noceda stepped inside waking into the chamber. She began to notice two things, this room was dimly lit and that it wasn’t the throne room. Emperor Belos was seated in a chair at the end his eyes glowing blue menacingly. “Let my mother go!” She shouted with determination.
