Part 39
Tumblr media
Cinder tried to get his papa's attention, but Hollie just wouldn't stop playing in his own ashes! Cinder couldn't understand what was going on!
Tumblr media
When Hollie did eventually stop, he breezed right past his son to stare into a glass. Not drinking it, not putting it down, just. Staring.
Tumblr media
Cinder finally bubbled over. It was his BIRTHDAY! He'd stood up for himself! He thought he'd finally get to reconnect with his beloved papa! How much more did he have to go through??
Tumblr media
Suddenly, a cacophony of Cindy's barking and unearthly meowing captured Cinder's attention!
Tumblr media
Sun's ghost was still hanging around! Cinder hadn't seen her in forever! Hopefully she would remember him, and not attack...
Tumblr media
As always, Sun quickly warmed up to Cinder, and let him pet her. She didn't nuzzle up to him or anything, but it still meant more to Cinder than he could express.
Tumblr media
It was surprising to him then when Uncle Ellis came in, and Sun totally froze! It was almost like she didn't recognise the guy she'd been friends with since he was a child...
Tumblr media
But there were other things for Cinder to focus on. He really needed someone to talk to! And surely Uncle Ellis would understand how weird it was to be ignored by his parent's ghost!!
Tumblr media
As a friend of the Grim Reaper, Ellis knew a thing or two. So it was time for a Ghost Crashcourse 101...
Tumblr media
Ghosts were not like living beings, obviously. Cindy sure was learning that! But they weren't like the living beings they'd once been. They were just about as transparent personality-wise as they were physically.
Tumblr media
For example, Sun had been Ellis' familiar in life. But in afterlife, she had completely forgotten him! Ellis had to re-introduce himself every night. The bond they'd shared was gone.
Tumblr media
She went through the motions of things she'd done in life, but... less. More faint memory than actual awareness.
Tumblr media
So... Cinder's papa was just, an idea of the person who had been. Not a fleshed out being with comprehension of his actions. Still a sucky outcome, but better than being straight up ignored, he supposed. Just another thing he'd have to process later.
Tumblr media
Ellis could understand the overwhelm. So hey, why not add some more overwhelm to the pile! But hopefully this would be the good kind.
Tumblr media
Cinder had received a lot of gifts from Ellis over the years. Usually jewelry. He honestly had more jewelry than he could wear, but it was still technically his birthday, so a gift was appreciated!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turns out, it wasn't jewelry! It was keys... and a deed to a house???

Hi! Loved your recent art post and the message with it, was wondering if you have any tips/resources/ideas on where to start researching the things you mentioned? Like the important parts of history and how it repeats itself, stuff like that,, thanks!!
Hello anon I'll start with a disclaimer: I’m just someone who shares fan art online, I am no expert or anything, but I’ll do my best to offer some useful references and share how I personally stay informed - I'll keep this list updated if I find interesting sources
@ everyone pease feel free to correct me or add to this post
I know that diving into topics like politics and history can feel overwhelming, but I promise it’s manageable if you ease into it with media and languages that feel comfortable to you. Of course, it’d be amazing to read and study every history book and testimony out there, but realistically it’s tough to find the time and energy to consistently do so - at any point in life. The best way to begin is to follow intersectional educators and historians on your socials to get small interesting informations little by little, and go check the sources they provide any time a topic sparks your interest.
Second disclaimer: I don’t know your background or where you’re from, and I think this makes the difference when figuring out where to start. I live in Italy, so many of my usual sources are Italian educators, historians, or social commentary pages that align with my own political and ideological views (se c'è qualche Italian*: il king Alessandro Barbero, Michela Murgia 💔, Claudia Fauzia, Tomaso Montanari, Diletta Bellotti, Cathy La Torre, Loredana Lipparini, @aestheticasovietica, @madonnafreeda...) but I started out just simply by browsing the internet, listening to some (wise) older people talk and perking up my ears in class.
My first tip would be to start local at first, and work outward. Look into the history of your town, community or area. What struggles and key issues have shaped it over time? If you have the means even directly ask people in your circles. We often hear about broad, all-encompassing issues that can feel unfathomable and far beyond our reach and control, but it’s important to remember that everything always starts within local communities, and only grows from there.
On the opposite side of this, my second tip would be to try and keep your sources as diverse as possible, and hear out people from all backgrounds. When events affect a specific community or minority, seek out creators and reporters directly from those groups and involved in said issues. Mainstream news is known to be very partial and biased more often than not - I personally tend to avoid it completely.
☆ now some actual sources:
Profiles
Historycoolkids & Decolonialatlas (these two are honestly just very fun but also educational) / so.informed / IMEU / JP Hill / seastersjones / decolonizemyself / seedingsovereignty / queerbrownvegan / workingclasshistory / brownhistory / propublica / motherjonesmag / ajplus / I'll add more as I find more
Readings
substack: us politics / world politics / history
the electric typewriter: Politics / History
are.na: Politics / this platform is full of great resources and full on books/pdfs to download, but it's better to just browse it by topic
a great library to explore is JSTOR ( @jstor ) / politics
Some writers I recommend are Susan Sontag, Angela Davis, Bell Hooks, David Olusoga, Thomas Piketty, Keisha N. Blain and Margaret MacMillan (you can also look on youtube for lectures they did)
Accessible history
Ryan Chapman

CrashCourse
What is Fascism (suggesting this video specifically bc it's the best english one I've found on the topic. Fascism is a word that gets thrown around a lot - and will be in the near future - often without a real knowledge about its origins and meaning, and I think this explains it very well and as quickly as humanly possible.)
This is everything that comes to mind right now!! And by the way remember to always remain full of curiosity and hope xxx

A “wow” moment
I kind of just found myself fixating over Tuberculosis. It is not like how people romanticized consumption back in the industrialization period, it’s more like “I am interested, tell me more”.
This is all after seeing John Green’s CrashCourse on TB, that I clicked on without reading the title. I saw that it was a new upload and watched it. Possibly the best subconscious decision in my life.
I never thought I would ever plan on pre-ordering a book in Amazon, as I live in the Philippines and the shipping fee is as expensive as the item itself. But I guess my monthly allowances will be dedicated to John’s new book “Everything is Tuberculosis”.

Leveraging Digital Resources for Smarter Study
Textbooks are great, but digital tools can take your learning to the next level. Here are my top picks for online study aids that complement tutoring:
Interactive Simulations Websites like PhET let you manipulate physics and chemistry experiments virtually. My tutor from Hub of Mentors and I would run demos live on screen—bringing theory to life.
Flashcard Apps Anki and Quizlet use spaced-repetition algorithms. We loaded custom decks after each lesson, ensuring I reviewed key formulas and definitions at optimal intervals.
Collaborative Note Platforms Tools like Notion allowed me and my tutor to co-edit notes in real time, embed videos, and leave feedback. This dynamic shared workspace replaced static PDF handouts.
Subject‑Specific Channels YouTube playlists curated by educators—like CrashCourse for history or 3Blue1Brown for math—offered concise visual explanations that reinforced our live sessions.
Practice Problem Libraries Platforms with thousands of categorized questions—complete with step‑by‑step solutions—helped me drill individual skills between tutoring slots.
Integrating these resources with personalized sessions at Hub of Mentors supercharged my study efficiency. If you want tutors who leverage tech, check their listings to find the perfect digital‑savvy mentor.

This last addition is great! I went to a great college, and they told us their main purpose was to teach us how to learn for the rest of our lives. How to be curious, to research, to think critically, to analyze, to synthesize, etc. Because even though I learned a truly insane amount of knowledge there, that was just 4 years of my life. And info does go out of date, and new things come up all the time. They didn't teach me about generative Ai because it didnt exist but the skills I learned there made it so I could easily understand and critically think about the subject.
I understand not everybody has been taught those skills but I think there are some people in the notes who dont get that the point of learning is to TRY. When you hear something new that confuses you or goes against something you thought, look it up!
Maybe google search does suck compared to what it used to but wikipedia is fantastic and sources like npr or crashcourse can teach you a lot. If the info isnt there maybe you do have to read a bunch of different opinions on something and figure out your takeaway. But thats good!! Its good to read 5 different sites and critically think about what is true.
For a very simple example: i have a prolific cherry tomato plant and I looked up how to preserve them. Many talked about sundried tomatos made in a dehydrator or oven. I had to do more research on truly doing it in the sun. Some people said things i dont agree with like it has to be 98 degrees. Once i got enough info i made a frame with cheesecloth and tried it out. And it worked great! Ive done it on any day above 80.
But what I truly get tired of is people not looking something up when they come across it. I commented on a youtube video saying that you should look up the environmental cost of chatgpt. And the replies I got were people asking me what it was! That is something you can easily google. And part of the reason I said to look it up and i didnt just give an answer is because its nuanced and new info is still coming out. Im not an expert.
You dont have to know everything, you dont need to know what your blind spots are, you just need to look something up when it comes up. Look out for those opportunities because they happen all the time imo.
have you considered it may not be entirely the fault of american education system but that some of you may be. stupid

i dont usually post but this is the rare occurrence where I can dump about my boy, my love: FLOYD LEECH. Consider this the unofficial crashcourse to Floyd Leech likers. Or don't idk. warning for uh absolute word vomit and octatrio favoritism
1. His Dynamics (and by that I mean octatrio)
With Azul:
When Azul said the twins would probably leave him when he got ‘boring' in Chapter 3, I need us as a fanbase to collectively point at him and call him a BIG FAT LIARRRR. I know what I saw in chapter 3, and Floyd Leech—while not exactly a tactful person per se— CARES. Even when Floyd teases Azul and makes life harder for him, I’m pretty sure that’s just his love language. And!! Despite his teasing, Floyd really does have some respect for Azul’s magical strength as seen in the Beanfest event.
He goes through all the ‘boring’ stuff for Azul and Jade’s plots because he likes the fun results!! He calls them by their ACTUAL names. They’ve been together since like middle school, and someone as mercurial as Floyd hasn’t gotten sick of Azul? It means he definitely has a bigger attachment that he OR Azul would like to admit. They are besties that hate to admit it because of the NRC disease of Not Being Emotionally Vulnerable Ever ™
Like look at these drama queens they are having the time of their LIVES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Jade:
I mean, yeah, it would make sense these guys would be close as twins BUT their dynamic is so fun. Jade's more "polite" demeanor plays off of Floyd's chaos perfectly: giving the guise of a put-together brother always needing to reign in his twin's insanity. When really both of them are menaces to society.
Probably the best example is in the Glorious Masquerade event, where Floyd makes a tantrum after finding out Azul gets to go to Noble College. And Jade JOINS IN.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(credits to RoseAmber on YT for the screenshots: I hadn't fallen into my TWST fixation as hard with the event was out on the EN server o7)
And of course, it goes without saying that they make for a really scary team for Azul. God bless Miss Yana and the team behind the Octavinelle manga--they have my soul and then some.
Tumblr media
BUT THEY ARE ALSO GOOFY ASF and i love that for them
Tumblr media
2. His Character
And there is a LOT of it. So let's start with his design!
Tumblr media
(sorry about the long image </3) BUT you can definitely tell a lot about him with this official pic
for one: he's definitely relaxed. It's definitely in his pose: the hand holding the hat up, the other in his pocket, and in his posture. As opposed to say, Riddle who stands ramrod straight, this is NOT the image of a guy that cares too much about what people think of him. he has his own style and he flaunts it. He's had lines where he talks about his octopus inspired socks and his thing for fancy shoes-- he could not care LESS about his loose clothes either much to Azul's chagrin.
ALSO this is way less concrete but like...his face matches his voice wayyy too well. Credit to the VO: Nobuhiko Okamoto (fun fact also the voice of BAKUGO FROM MHA???) for his voice especially his laugh. Something about the way his eyes are droopy and his sharp teeth are shown in the image?? That's a silly guy, right there. And his laugh is just the right amount of weirdly endearing and creepy it is absolutely wonderful.
Now, in terms of personality...
We all get it. He's a menace. In his Ceremonial robes and Lab Wear SRs, he definitely shows his flip-floppy nature. In the former, he's fucking around at one of Kalim's parties and in the latter he is subject to one of Adeuces' fuck ups--and surprisingly doesn't hunt them for sport after (yay!). It's his thing.
But!!! There's other things!! :D
Among the rest of the Octavinelle trio, Floyd is probably the most acclimated to land life. Even more than Jade, despite his love for the mountains and mushrooms. Because Floyd has the unique trait of just fucking throwing himself at anything and everything the human world has to offer. We know from the Stargazing Event that Floyd has a thing for high-end shoes from a conversation he had with his (mafia??) father. Despite his initial boredom with fashion in general, it feels very 'Floyd' for him to be fixated on the one item that is intrinsic to living on land: shoes.
He's also canonically really good at cooking...when he wants to be. Like all other things in his life, he tends to be flippant with when he feels like making a meal. But damn when he DOES. For example, during Culinary Crucible Sebek admits that Floyd is very skilled in the kitchen. (If anybody has his CC card....and would like to share with the class his vignette....wink wink nudge nudge). And in the most recent event: Stitch's Tropical Turbulence in the EN server he's seen making a delicious meal for the crew that everyone can't help but compliment: even RIDDLE. He also says its best when you "just wing it" and throw stuff together: which makes sense for his taste for weird takoyaki flavors. Jade has said before that in the Coral Sea they just kind of eat shit raw--which makes it pretty impressive Floyd has such a knack for cooking as a land-dweller activity.
I think it's been said that generally merfolk have a bad time with flight--which extends to the Octatrio. I believe there's been vignettes that focus on Azul's struggles in P.E., though I'm not so sure about Jade. What I AM sure is that chibi Jade is constantly going through it in flight lessons so, I'll take that as gospel for now. But!!! Floyd has a fucking blast. It's definitely not like he's a prodigy or anything but, he thinks it's fun to keep trying ("Haha! I'm like, so bad at this!") Which honestly is why my headcanon is that he is the ONLY of the Octatrio to not be failing P.E.. This also extends to his involvement of the basketball club.
For a merperson to adjust to walking on land is already a crazy ask. TO ASK THEM TO PLAY AN ENTIRELY NEW SPORT THAT RELIES ON NEW RULES, PUTTING INTO ACCOUNT PHYSICS ON LAND AND OH YEAH THEIR LEGS IS INSANE.
But, Floyd Leech does not care what you think is insane. Actually, maybe he does. Just so he can do it. To top it all off: he's good. He can be really good. Club Wear stuff hasn't come out yet in EN server but Floyd Leech can fucking DUNK. I've seen the art. I know what I saw.
His diligence can rival Azul's--he's just less consistent about it. I just think that's funny and pretty cool.
3. Him,,,,,,but like romantically
OKAY SO THIS IS THE PINING PART. THE DOWN BAD MANIFESTO IF YOU WILL.
Sorry it took so long to get here, but I'm here now. Lemme absolutely YAP about what I love about him.
I have some feelings about how authors write him (THIS IS ALL OPINION I LOVE ALL FANFIC AUTHORS ESP OP U DESERVE A KISS ON THE FOREHEAD <3)
I dislike the yandere/overly possessive angle the twins get. I do. But, I get where that interpretation stems from: they're outwardly violent, intimidating, and are basically the fish mafia. Focusing on Floyd though: I love it when he's just....a guy in fics. When he is complaining about his childhood-best-friend-turned-boss who scolded him, or when he gets excited when his crush goes to his basketball games, or when he just wants to SQUEEZE the cute person in his class because he's got cuteness aggression. Fluff, I just like fluff.
OOO OOO FICS THAT LEAN INTO THE "Eels are Cowards" LINE. MY HEART AND SOUL. THEY HAVE IT. Gonna give Jade a big fat kiss for saying that line BC GOOD GOD.
GIMME FLOYD WHERE HE IS STARING AT THE READER FROM ACROSS THE ROOM BC HE DOESN'T HAVE THE BALLS TO SAY WHAT HE FEELS. GIMME FLOYD WHERE HE STARTS TO CALL THE PREFECT BY THEIR NAME INSTEAD OF "SHRIMPY" EXCLUSIVELY. GIMME FLOYD WHERE HE WANTS TO IMPRESS HIS LOVE INTEREST AND GETS EMBARRASSED WHEN HE LOOKS "UNCOOL".
I love where Floyd gets moments where he is caught off guard. Not even necessarily flustered. SHOUT OUT TO @cloudedgalaxies on Ao3 AND Tumblr for one of my FAVORITE interpretations of this.
I love it when Floyd doesn't know what to do when someone actively seeks him out. He's a moray--he's known to be feared by even the creatures of the deep. People at NRC know to be wary of him and his brother: he's basically a hitman for Azul for Seven's sake. But, for some reason, Yuu don't mind it. And I mean that in the sense to refer to the prefect and YOU. I love it when the reader puts up with his squeezes, his mood swings, and his eccentricities. Because for them, it isn't "putting up" with anybody: it's just them spending a good time with Floyd. And that's not a response Floyd expects. HE'S the one who is supposed to be unpredictable! Not you!
So he gets quieter. More reflective. Maybe even more angry. Whyyy???? Why do you do that? Your unpredictability robs Floyd of his control. He likes to toy with people for their reactions, but he is wholly unprepared for yours. And that makes him flail. In @cloudedgalaxies ' fic 'Benevolent Souls', Floyd gets angry with the reader. He can't understand their motivations and that bothers him in a way that he can't even understand completely. Love is foreign to him. The sea is cruel and cold sometimes, even though Floyd loves it it can crush your vulnerability. It really can.
I love it when fics make Floyd love. Even if he didn't think he could. I love it when fics show Floyd's softness that he didn't even know he had. I really do: because he throws himself into loving like he does everything else he thinks is worth it. I LOVE when he thinks love is worth it. He's intense, and wild, and unpredictable, and he's so silly. I love Floyd Leech. I do.

This is just give you an idea of how it looks. Transcription under the cut:
Epic Theatre and why it is relevant in today's society.
German playwright and performer Bertolt Brecht, born 10th of february, was intrigued by Stanislavsky’s use of theatre for a political voice, as well as sharing his view on theatre and melodrama. However, Brecht viewed Stanislavky’s use of immersion as a form of escapism, which harmed his message, as the audience would believe it just a fantastical part of the fiction, rather than a commentary on the wider world. Brecht took the basis of Stanislavski's style, and merged it with some of the ideas from surrealist theatre, in order to birth a style that viscerally confronted his audience with the political message that he was portraying. From the age of 20, he served in an army hospital, and there he wrote his first play, and first success “Baal” - 1923. Unfortunately, political commentary was dangerous to pursue during the reign of the Nazi regime, so in 1933, he fled germany to bring his style to the United States of America, during this trip, he wrote many of his famous works such as “Mother Courage and Her Children'' and “The Good Person of Setzuan''. Many of his plays focused upon the leftist ideologies of the time, such as: the “wild theory” that the Nazi’s were bad, the entirety of the second world war, the following “Great Depression” and the onset of commercialism/capitalism. During 1947; the beginning of the Red-Scare, he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee under investigation for supporting communist ideologies. After being forced to provide evidence against this claim, he left and re-settled in East Germany not long after. Brecht’s views upon being forced to constantly travel due to views upon his plays being forced by the commonality of war can be summarised by a famous quote of his: “Society cannot share a common communication system so long as it is split into warring factions.”
The most common, and consequently the most known trope is alienation, also known as the “Verfremdungseffekt” (as coined by Brecht). Alienation is achieved through frequently reminding the audience that they are watching a performance, and that it is just a story. Alienation is used to break the immersion that the audience finds comfort in, in order to make them really pay attention to the moral and meaning of the story presented and present its allegory to real-world issues. For example, most audiences don’t understand that “The Empire” in “Star Wars” represented real-world totalitarian dictatorships, specifically the Nazi’s.
Now more than ever can Epic theatre be used as a literary device, especially when today’s society has become so desensitised to the ridiculousness of the world as a whole. For example, during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically when Donald Trump was elected, World War 3 could’ve started and no one would’ve batted an eye. Covid-19 still exists, and still claims lives, but people just ignore its existence because the worst of it has passed. One of the largest international issues that will dictate the earth’s future, is the advent of global warming, of which is still being ignored to this day because there are “more relevant issues” and there is money to be made by ignoring it. Most incredulously, there were allegations being held against the social media platform “Tik-Tok” after United States national secrets pertaining to the identities of special-operative agents became public knowledge. It came to light that these leaks were committed by a 23 year-old “man-child" in a racist “Minecraft Discord server" in response to being called a “liar” and a “cuck” when bragging about having high-level military clearance. This was talked about for 2 days.
The “Oh, it might as well happen” mindset today’s society has towards the next most unbelievable thing to happen is just waiting to be revealed to the isolated incredibility of it all.
Society will not wake up to their issues unless someone reveals to them the stupidity of how their situation came to be.

You guys want an article on Epic theatre and how it can be used in today's society I wrote on a whim?
I can't stop showing people I'm genuinely really proud of it and I'm almost never proud of any of my work.
Also it references The Lorax if it interests you.

hello megane lover, it's a pleasure seeing you here <3
his name is Nezha, he's a primal beast of wind and fire. He was made for battle but, like all primal beasts, was left behind in the skyrealms. While at first he had a hard time settling in as his first impulse has always been violence, as per his purpose, he was found by Medusa, Baal and Satyr, others primal beasts who've been left behind -- and because they were all battle primals who had to get adjusted to their new situations, they stuck together to discover the skyrealms in this time of peace.
Tumblr media
Nezha in particular focused even more on learning about the cultures of the skyrealms, he got really into reading, and learning new things. He's usually really calm, carefree and all of that, but if you provoke him a little too much on the battlefield he can snap and take a gleeful pleasure with the violence of battle. Primals are not meant to change nor to deviate from their purpose, so Nezha still think of himself as a creature made for violence, even if he doesn't indulge in this violence at all anymore. But by the time he spends in the skyrealms, he's grown tired of the idea he could only be made for violence, tired of having to stay immutable while he is immortal, and it's why he likes reading and learning new things, maybe so he can change a little in the end too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's more often than not seen with Satyr, Medusa and Baal, and the four of them are nicknamed "The Primal Pals". They promised each other that even if their path part ways sometimes, they will always find each other again, since if they were left behind and alone with no real goal in life, might as well be alone with one another and discover new things together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he doesn't usually wear glasses but he does for his summer version which is neat.
Tumblr media
he's appeared into two real events (and a collab event), both of which focused specifically on primal beasts' struggles to live on after they were abandonned after the war, who had to struggle to allow themselves to grow and change against their nature, and the inherent loneliness of eternity and how still making connection, no matter how fleeting it is, is always worthwhile.
and that's the crashcourse for you ;D
