WordPress Freelancers and agencies often do more than design and development. A full-service company may also maintain and host its clients’ websites.

Providing web hosting has several benefits for freelancers. First, it’s a vehicle to add recurring revenue to your business via reselling or an affiliate program from an established host. That steady flow of money can improve your financial health.

You’ll also have more control over each site’s environment. That helps ensure compatibility and keeps things running smoothly. Plus, you’ll know what to expect regarding performance, security, and support.

However, hosting client sites is also a serious responsibility. It puts you on the hook for technical difficulties. In addition, managing multiple WordPress websites is challenging. One false move could mean a string of crashed or hacked sites.

With that in mind, we have some tips for hosting your client’s WordPress websites. We’ll show you how to keep a watchful eye on each site without breaking your budget.

Keep Each Client Website Separate

Web hosting costs run the gamut from insanely cheap to, well, insanely expensive. It’s tempting to go the inexpensive route with a shared hosting account.

Hosts often allow multiple WordPress installs on an account. It makes sense from a business perspective. You pay for a couple of hosting packages and run all of your client sites on them.

This strategy has a couple of serious flaws. The first is that server downtime could impact every site you host. It’s bad enough when one site is down, let alone a few dozen.

Malware is the other major concern. Malicious code can easily spread from one site to another in a shared hosting environment. Once a site is compromised, it’s only a matter of time until the others are hit.

The lesson here is to keep each website on a separate hosting account. Make sure your host isolates sites via a container or other barrier. That will help prevent a security nightmare. Again, it’s easier to deal with one hacked site than having multiple infections.

And it doesn’t have to be inconvenient. Many hosts offer a centralized dashboard to access each site, and there are also third-party services that do the same.

Lock Down Your WordPress Installs

On many hosts, the famous “5-minute WordPress install” has been replaced with a one-click process. Still, older sites may have been installed manually via SFTP. Thus, it’s important to check each install to verify its integrity.

WordPress file permissions are an area of concern. For instance, allowing public access to the site’s wp-config.php file is an invitation to hackers. The file includes your database login and other sensitive information. A lot of damage can be done if it falls into the wrong hands.

The WordPress developer documentation has a handy guide for setting the correct file permissions. Follow its advice and ensure files only have the required permissions.

You might also want to disable file editing within the WordPress dashboard. That will prevent a malicious actor (or adventurous client) from editing theme or plugin files.

Add the following line to each site’s wp-config.php file: define( 'DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true );

The goal is to enhance each site’s security, which provides peace of mind for you and your clients.

Ensure You Have Enough Server Resources

Every website you host will have different needs. For example, a brochure site’s functionality isn’t as complex as a WooCommerce shop. Plus, some will inevitably receive more traffic.

That’s why hosting is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Hosts offer tiered services that account for storage and bandwidth. They may also limit the number of domains, dashboard users, or site visitors. Crossing these thresholds can be costly.

Also, pay attention to server resources like memory, CPU cycles, and PHP workers. Shared hosting environments don’t usually guarantee a minimum. More expensive accounts, such as VPS and dedicated servers, assign these resources to your account.

It pays to understand what your host offers and how it impacts your websites. A site with too few resources won’t perform well and may break. Meanwhile, hosting a small site on a higher tier could be wasteful.

You can avoid problems by assessing each site you host. Pay particular attention to the following factors:

Monthly traffic (via Google Analytics or other apps);

Security risks (online transactions, user accounts);

The amount of content;

Special functionality (shopping carts, members-only areas, resource-intensive plugins);

Site stability, performance, and security are vital to success. Using the right hosting will go a long way toward ensuring it.

Keep an Eye Out for Hosting Changes

We know that WordPress, themes, and plugins all require regular maintenance. That’s something we often manage for our clients. But hosts also maintain their infrastructure.

A host will apply new software versions and security patches to their servers. They’ll also upgrade hardware from time to time. You’ll want to know when this happens.

PHP upgrades are a prime example. An outdated theme or plugin could be incompatible with the latest version, which leads to a buggy or broken site.

Staying in the know can help prevent these types of issues. Web hosts often announce maintenance plans ahead of time. They may publish to a blog, add a dashboard alert, or send an email.

Make an effort to inform yourself of what’s happening. It can save you from a future headache or two.

Be a Good Host

Hosting your client’s WordPress websites keeps you in the loop. You’ll be able to watch over each site and ensure its health. It’s also a path to making some extra money.

When things run smoothly, the burden on your time should be minimal. Ensuring things stay that way is part of the job, though.

The first step is to choose your hosting provider wisely. Look for a host that follows best security practices and has a deep understanding of WordPress. They should also offer enough resources to run each site without issue.

From there, it’s all about being proactive with the sites in your portfolio. Keep them updated and take extra security measures. In other words: control the things you can.

Some things are beyond our control. We can’t predict downtime or a host being sold. However, we can put ourselves and our clients in a position to succeed. We hope the tips above will help you get there.

Still standing

On the afternoon of April 14th, a hacker using a UK IP address exploited an out-of-date software package on one of 4chan's servers, via a bogus PDF upload. With this entry point, they were eventually able to gain access to one of 4chan's servers, including database access and access to our own administrative dashboard. The hacker spent several hours exfiltrating database tables and much of 4chan's source code. When they had finished downloading what they wanted, they began to vandalize 4chan at which point moderators became aware and 4chan's servers were halted, preventing further access.

Over the following days, 4chan's development team surveyed the damage, which to be frank, was catastrophic. While not all of our servers were breached, the most important one was, and it was due to simply not updating old operating systems and code in a timely fashion. Ultimately this problem was caused by having insufficient skilled man-hours available to update our code and infrastructure, and being starved of money for years by advertisers, payment providers, and service providers who had succumbed to external pressure campaigns.

We had begun a process of speccing new servers in late 2023. As many have suspected, until that time 4chan had been running on a set of servers purchased second-hand by moot a few weeks before his final Q&A, as prior to then we simply were not in a financial position to consider such a large purchase. Advertisers and payment providers willing to work with 4chan are rare, and are quickly pressured by activists into cancelling their services. Putting together the money for new equipment took nearly a decade.

In April of 2024 we had agreed on specs and began looking for possible suppliers. Money is always tight for us, and few companies were willing to sell us servers, so actually buying the hardware wasn’t a trivial problem. We managed to finalize a purchase in June, and had the new servers racked and online in July. Over the next few months we slowly moved functionality onto the new servers, but we had still been relying on the old servers for key functions. Everything about this process took much longer than intended, which is a recurring theme in this debacle. The free time that 4chan's development team had available to dedicate to 4chan was insufficient to update our software and infrastructure fast enough, and our luck ran out.

However, we have not been idle during our nearly two weeks of downtime. The server that was breached has been replaced, with the operating system and code updated to the latest versions. PDF uploads have been temporarily disabled on those boards that supported them, but they will be back in the near future. One slow but much beloved board, /f/ - Flash, will not be returning however, as there is no realistic way to prevent similar exploits using .swf files. We are bringing on additional volunteer developers to help keep up with the workload, and our team of volunteer janitors & moderators remains united despite the grievous violations some have suffered to their personal privacy.

4chan is back. No other website can replace it, or this community. No matter how hard it is, we are not giving up.

Using Pages CMS for Static Site Content Management

Friends, I’ve been on the hunt for a decent content management system for static sites for… well, about as long as we’ve all been calling them “static sites,” honestly.

I know, I know: there are a ton of content management system options available, and while I’ve tested several, none have really been the one, y’know? Weird pricing models, difficult customization, some even end up becoming a whole ‘nother thing to manage.

Also, I really enjoy building with site generators such as Astro or Eleventy, but pitching Markdown as the means of managing content is less-than-ideal for many “non-techie” folks.

A few expectations for content management systems might include:

Easy to use: The most important feature, why you might opt to use a content management system in the first place.

Minimal Requirements: Look, I’m just trying to update some HTML, I don’t want to think too much about database tables.

Collaboration: CMS tools work best when multiple contributors work together, contributors who probably don’t know Markdown or what GitHub is.

Customizable: No website is the same, so we’ll need to be able to make custom fields for different types of content.

Not a terribly long list of demands, I’d say; fairly reasonable, even. That’s why I was happy to discover Pages CMS.

According to its own home page, Pages CMS is the “The No-Hassle CMS for Static Site Generators,” and I’ll to attest to that. Pages CMS has largely been developed by a single developer, Ronan Berder, but is open source, and accepting pull requests over on GitHub.

Taking a lot of the “good parts” found in other CMS tools, and a single configuration file, Pages CMS combines things into a sleek user interface.

Pages CMS includes lots of options for customization, you can upload media, make editable files, and create entire collections of content. Also, content can have all sorts of different fields, check the docs for the full list of supported types, as well as completely custom fields.

There isn’t really a “back end” to worry about, as content is stored as flat files inside your git repository. Pages CMS provides folks the ability to manage the content within the repo, without needing to actually know how to use Git, and I think that’s neat.

User Authentication works two ways: contributors can log in using GitHub accounts, or contributors can be invited by email, where they’ll receive a password-less, “magic-link,” login URL. This is nice, as GitHub accounts are less common outside of the dev world, shocking, I know.

Oh, and Pages CMS has a very cheap barrier for entry, as it’s free to use.

Pages CMS and Astro content collections

I’ve created a repository on GitHub with Astro and Pages CMS using Astro’s default blog starter, and made it available publicly, so feel free to clone and follow along.

I’ve been a fan of Astro for a while, and Pages CMS works well alongside Astro’s content collection feature. Content collections make globs of data easily available throughout Astro, so you can hydrate content inside Astro pages. These globs of data can be from different sources, such as third-party APIs, but commonly as directories of Markdown files. Guess what Pages CMS is really good at? Managing directories of Markdown files!

Content collections are set up by a collections configuration file. Check out the src/content.config.ts file in the project, here we are defining a content collection named blog:

The blog content collection checks the /src/content/blog directory for files matching the **/*.md file type, the Markdown file format. The schema property is optional, however, Astro provides helpful type-checking functionality with Zod, ensuring data saved by Pages CMS works as expected in your Astro site.

Pages CMS Configuration

Alright, now that Astro knows where to look for blog content, let’s take a look at the Pages CMS configuration file, .pages.config.yml:

There is a lot going on in there, but inside the content section, let’s zoom in on the blog object.

We can point Pages CMS to the directory we want to save Markdown files using the path property, matching it up to the /src/content/blog/ location Astro looks for content.

path: src/content/blog

For the filename we can provide a pattern template to use when Pages CMS saves the file to the content collection directory. In this case, it’s using the file date’s year, month, and day, as well as the blog item’s title, by using fields.title to reference the title field. The filename can be customized in many different ways, to fit your scenario.

The type property tells Pages CMS that this is a collection of files, rather than a single editable file (we’ll get to that in a moment).

In our Astro content collection configuration, we define our blog collection with the expectation that the files will contain a few bits of meta data such as: title, description, pubDate, and a few more properties.

We can mirror those requirements in our Pages CMS blog collection as fields. Each field can be customized for the type of data you’re looking to collect. Here, I’ve matched these fields up with the default Markdown frontmatter found in the Astro blog starter.

Now, every time we create a new blog item in Pages CMS, we’ll be able to fill out each of these fields, matching the expected schema for Astro.

Aside from collections of content, Pages CMS also lets you manage editable files, which is useful for a variety of things: site wide variables, feature flags, or even editable navigations.

Take a look at the site-settings object, here we are setting the type as file, and the path includes the filename site.json.

The fields I’ve included are common site-wide settings, such as the site’s title, description, url, and cover image.

Speaking of images, we can tell Pages CMS where to store media such as images and video.

media: input: public/media output: /media

The input property explains where to store the files, in the /public/media directory within our project.

The output property is a helpful little feature that conveniently replaces the file path, specifically for tools that might require specific configuration. For example, Astro uses Vite under the hood, and Vite already knows about the public directory and complains if it’s included within file paths. Instead, we can set the output property so Pages CMS will only point image path locations starting at the inner /media directory instead.

To see what I mean, check out the test post in the src/content/blog/ folder:

The heroImage now property properly points to /media/... instead of /public/media/....

As far as configurations are concerned, Pages CMS can be as simple or as complex as necessary. You can add as many collections or editable files as needed, as well as customize the fields for each type of content. This gives you a lot of flexibility to create sites!

Connecting to Pages CMS

Now that we have our Astro site set up, and a .pages.config.yml file, we can connect our site to the Pages CMS online app. As the developer who controls the repository, browse to https://app.pagescms.org/ and sign in using your GitHub account.

You should be presented with some questions about permissions, you may need to choose between giving access to all repositories or specific ones. Personally, I chose to only give access to a single repository, which in this case is my astro-pages-cms-template repo.

After providing access to the repo, head on back to the Pages CMS application, where you’ll see your project listed under the “Open a Project” headline.

Clicking the open link will take you into the website’s dashboard, where we’ll be able to make updates to our site.

Creating content

Taking a look at our site’s dashboard, we’ll see a navigation on the left side, with some familiar things.

Blog is the collection we set up inside the .pages.config.yml file, this will be where we we can add new entries to the blog.

Site Settings is the editable file we are using to make changes to site-wide variables.

Media is where our images and other content will live.

Settings is a spot where we’ll be able to edit our .pages.config.yml file directly.

Collaborators allows us to invite other folks to contribute content to the site.

We can create a new blog post by clicking the Add Entry button in the top right

Here we can fill out all the fields for our blog content, then hit the Save button.

After saving, Pages CMS will create the Markdown file, store the file in the proper directory, and automatically commit the changes to our repository. This is how Pages CMS helps us manage our content without needing to use git directly.

Automatically deploying

The only thing left to do is set up automated deployments through the service provider of your choice. Astro has integrations with providers like Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, and Vercel, but can be hosted anywhere you can run node applications.

Astro is typically very fast to build (thanks to Vite), so while site updates won’t be instant, they will still be fairly quick to deploy. If your site is set up to use Astro’s server-side rendering capabilities, rather than a completely static site, the changes might be much faster to deploy.

Wrapping up

Using a template as reference, we checked out how Astro content collections work alongside Pages CMS. We also learned how to connect our project repository to the Pages CMS app, and how to make content updates through the dashboard. Finally, if you are able, don’t forget to set up an automated deployment, so content publishes quickly.

As I've mentioned, I've been working on a Notion template for TS4 and the idea is to put it out in the world soonish. There is still a lot to be done, but I wanted to show some of the progress we've got so far.

In just a few months, Donald Trump’s second presidential term has drastically reshaped the United States federal government and moved to consolidate the power of the executive branch. At the behest of the president, numerous federal agencies have undertaken aggressive, invasive initiatives to crack down on immigration, police speech, investigate political opponents, curtail US public health efforts and emergency preparedness, and more.

With so much happening at once, numerous organizations and individuals have launched databases, interactive maps, and other trackers to catalog these government actions and their impacts on people’s civil rights across the US. Using open source intelligence, public data, news coverage, and other research, these tools are vital resources for documenting, contextualizing, and analyzing the flood of federal activity that is fundamentally reshaping the US. Here are a few prominent examples.

The Impact Map

This interactive map tracks changes to US federal government funding, workforce, and policy across the country, documenting things like mass worker firings, hiring freezes, funding cuts, and lease terminations. The tool also shows places where funding has subsequently been unfrozen, federal workers have been rehired or may be, or the federal government has added a new service or benefit.

embeds are underrated. i embed my spotify playlists, google calendar, and pinterest boards so everything's in one place.

toggle lists for anything lengthy. they keep things looking clean but you can expand when needed.

color coding that actually means something. i used to just pick pretty colors but now each color has a purpose (red = urgent, blue = school, pink = blog, etc).
