How to: fresh start.

Hi babes! Hope you're all having a great day. Now, I want to share with you tips that will help you FEEL that fresh start of the new year.

Digital cleanse. Cleanse your phone, delete unwanted pictures, screenshots, videos, documents, games, apps ESPECIALLY shopping apps. Why so? Well, let me tell you. You don't need your phone constantly buzzing with sales on stuff you already have or don't need. Those apps convince you that you need this and that when, in reality, you don't. You'll just end up wasting time and money.

Physical cleanse. You might be wondering what that is. For me, physical cleansing is simply taking a shower (could be a simple shower or an everything shower) and drinking green tea. Green tea helps with digestion, cleanses your stomach, and even boosts your brain health. You can drink whatever drink that is actually beneficial (ginger shots, lemon water, mint tea, etc).

Wardrobe. Declutter your wardrobe. You can donate some, resell some or even reuse (to clean, for example). Clothes are fabrics and fabrics are meant to have more than one use. Just get rid of clothes that you don't wear anymore or that don't fit you (size, style..)

Unsubscribe and unfollow. YouTube, tiktok, instagram.. just unfollow. You've grown out of phases, embrace that and unfollow people that resonate with the old you (who you love, but simply don't relate to anymore).

Rearrange. For me that's for my gallery, pinterest, and spotify. For my gallery, after I delete unwanted pictures, I create new folders for the ones I kept. For pinterest, I archive my old boards ('24 vision boards), create new ones, and update old vision boards. For spotify, I delete playlists I don't listen to anymore, unfollow artists and create new playlists.

Notion! I've been a notion user and lover for the past 5 years now and it's my planner, diary, journal and literally everything. Open a blank page and build it however you like, or choose a nice template and play around with it till satisfaction. Create a "reflection" section where you write about the past year and what you loved, hated, learned, etc.

Write down who you want to become. What is she doing, what does she love, what does she look like, what's her personality like, how she spends her day, what are her hobbies, what are her ambitions, etc. And may your visualization come true.

ISTG if I have to spend the next two years watching people be pre-emptively miserable over Hellyna for no reason other than the general audience being dumb and therefore that must somehow mean Dan is just going to throw his whole story out of the window...

I understand plenty of shows have done that in the past but, no offense, it's usually pretty shitty shows with shitty writers. Prestige television almost never does that unless its showrunners are dudebros who have Game of Thrones as their template for what they think great television is. If you are a good writer you don't pander to people who don't understand your work, or change direction willy nilly based on what people expect or don't expect. If anything, you double down on it to really drill it into people's heads. And while I can't say I trust ANY writer 100%, Dan doesn't give me the vibe of someone who's ego-driven and who either wants to outsmart or over-pander to his audience.

Plus, nothing whatsoever seems to hint at them suddenly deciding that because people don't like/understand Helena she's going to be written off at "the villain" and that's it. Every single time any of them talks about Helena the theme is consistently about how trapped she is, how Helly is a manifestation of her repressed nature, and Britt has been avoiding any question about Helena's "redemption" like the plague, which means it's a spoiler. And sidelining her would literally go against the entire premise of the show being about people finding their true selves through their innie-outie dynamic, about outies recognising that the innies are people, and about whether kinship transcends across innies and outies. It's also why any scenarios where Helly refuses reintegration because "Helena bad" is so off putting to me. Because that is Helly literally learning NOTHING and being stuck where she was in S1. She has literally reached the point in the finale to start accepting she IS Helena, and you think that's all going to be for nothing? Or that Cobel's in-your-face line about SHE IS AN EAGAN YOU MEAN NOTHING TO HER is going to prove true?? There's nothing more delicious to a writer than subverting their own characters' expectations and preconceived notion of other characters as a conduit to subvert the audience's.

I know I myself speculated about Helena "killing herself" for Helly by permanently severing herself, but that was early on in my Severance adventure and before I really got a good grasp of the underlying message the show is aiming for. I don't completely rule it out, but I think it's a very unlikely outcome at this point and even if something along those lines were to happen, it will happen after Helena has had plenty of development and "natural reintegration" with Helly so that there will be a lot of Helena in Helly by the time all's said and done. They're not going to suddenly go "well oops! Helena is evil and must die so Helly and/or Markgemma can ride off into the sunset".

As I've mentioned, I've been working on a Notion template for TS4 and the idea is to put it out in the world soonish. There is still a lot to be done, but I wanted to show some of the progress we've got so far.

As someone who is considering writing their own Interactive Fiction, I'm curious what your process for writing a chapter is. Like you mentioned zero drafting a while back, and I found it's really helped, so are there any other techniques you'd recommend? :0

Omg hiiii! It’s definitely a labor of love, but it’s so rewarding. I wish you luck if you end up going for it!

I'm a feeling a little uhh shy doing this since I'm not the fastest nor greatest writer out there... but I’d be happy to share what’s worked for me so far.

Just know that everyone's process is unique, but I hope something here clicks for some of you :D

Tips?

Try to avoid jumping around scenes/routes

I used to jump around from scene to scene, but I’ve found that it makes me prone to flow and continuity mistakes. It's especially troublesome as the story gets bigger.

Now I try to focus on one route or scene at a time. This helps me stay in right headspace, keeps everything cohesive, and is much more efficient.

If you find yourself tempted to jump around, try sticking with one part until it’s complete, or at least until you’ve written a solid chunk of it!

Use CSIDE's (find | find & replace) function to help look for pronouns/names. And do a quick test before playtesting your game

Not sure if everyone uses this... but Ctrl + F then typing the word (ex. he/she/her/him etc) you want to change into a variable helps so much. Especially for hunting pronouns. Highlights words making them easier to see.

A quick Ctrl + T will save you from pain when you're deep into playtesting...

Try the CGST plugin for playtesting routes

I mainly use it for the back button and seeing notifications when a variable changes. With this you can quickly check if all choices are working as intended. It's super useful!

Only caveat is that it only works in Firefox.

Oh and yes, you'll have to upload a private demo for playtesting in COGDemos to try it out ( ˙▿˙ )

Zero Drafting

I know I mentioned it already, but I have to rave about it again!

If you're struggling with where to start, this method might help you. It’s all about getting your ideas down first. It's okay if it’s a mess. Just pour everything into your draft. The main goal here is to keep your ideas flowing, you can always refine them later.

This gives you a foundation to work from and, in my experience, it's a huge relief knowing you don’t have to perfect everything immediately.

You can also mix in coding during the zero draft phase! It’s a great way to test how the choices fit together with the scene you’re working on.

Laying out all the groundwork can save a lot of time in the long run.

Apps that helped me (and might help you too!)

Articy (free)

Not only can it help visualize the paths, but it can track variables too! Also has tabs where you can store character and other lore entries. It has its own language so you'll have to learn it for awhile, but it's pretty easy to understand if you have time :)

I don't use it anymore though since I feel more comfortable doing everything in CSIDE now. But it still helped me a lot when I was getting dizzy with all the gotos, labels, and stuff.

Notion (free)

Just a neat place to store outlines, lore, or ideas! I used to use simple google docs, but this one has more features like; create checklists, put existing pages (scenes) into a timeline, etc. In case you're curious, I used this template in particular.

Tout le monde ! Mais, il est vivement conseillé de l'essayer sur des forums tests ou sur des catégories de test sur vos forums. Vous pouvez par exemple essayer d'adapter vos fiches actuelles avec le plugin et demander à vos membres de reproduire leur fiche. Si le plugin rencontre un succès, vous pourrez alors faire la transition.

L'installation de base est très simple. Elle se déroule en trois étapes mais elle demande d'installer du code un peu partout (template, CSS, javascript). Si vous n'avez jamais ouvert un panneau d'administration d'un forum, ce n'est peut-être pas le meilleur code avec lequel commencer.

C'est l'édition du plugin (pour créer vos propres mise en page etc) qui peut s'avérer plus poussé. En réalité, c'est beaucoup de manipulation HTML avec notions qui seront peut-être nouvelles pour beaucoup.

Ne vous laissez pas impressionner par la taille du tutoriel !

La première partie suffit à réussir à installer le plugin et le faire fonctionner. La suite est à but explicatif et elle parcours toutes les possibilités qui s'offrent à vous avec ce plugin (promis ça vaut le coup).

something i've been trying to answer for a couple of months is Which base game hood has the most Face Template Sims?

by Face Template, i mean sims whose faces are just. the premade maxis presets (and by sims, i really mean the main alive ones.) i feel like people often point to pleasantview when discussing the most basic/template-y of the hoods, but after looking at strangetown i can't help but wonder… Are we really sure about that?

i mean, you have sims like pascal and lazlo and jenny and buzz and tank and the singles who all seem to look EXACTLY like in-game face templates ..............................right?

So, which base game hood has the most Face Template Sims?

In order to figure out once and for all which hood has the most Face Template Sims, I put together a little Notion document(!) to juxtapose their faces with the closest templates, as well as with their suggested feature templates from C.Syde's Wiki (so credit to that guy ^^).

Something I quickly found out as I was piecing this together, though, was that Maxis put in a little more effort than I thought… Every single Sim has at least some slight modification to their face, with the exception of four: Alexander Goth, John Burb, Puck Summerdream, and Desdemona Capp. Two from Pleasantview, two from Veronaville. Ironically, at least to those who are familiar with it, Veronaville is known as the hood with the most unique Sim faces out of the base game trinity. Sure, you have your Vidcunds and Dinas and Nervouses, but Veronaville has threefold what the others do with Sims like Consort, Tybalt, Hermia, Isabella, Romeo, Benedick, etc. etc.

With this in mind, how is it that Veronaville is the true answer to this question? Well, Alexander Goth actually has a modification made to his jaw, but the difference is so slight that I counted him anyway. The same is true for John Burb with a slight modification of his forehead. Basically, not only is Veronaville the base game hood with the most Face Template Sims, it is the only base game hood with any Face Template Sims at all!

But what if we redefined "Face Template Sims"?

Even if Sims like Jenny and Buzz don't technically fall under this category, they bear enough resemblance to templates that many simmers consider them such anyway. Maybe, in this case, Face Template Sims just strongly resemble the templates they're based on. Here's a problem, though: how in the world do you qualify what it means for a Sim to resemble their template? It might sound simple enough—just use your eyes and compare, stupid!—but when does a Sim's face cross the threshold from "looking like a template" to true uniqueness? Here are some examples.

Until I started looking into this topic, I never realized Circe was so similar to Template #27! There are significant edits to her eyes, with lesser edits to her brow area and nose and even lesser edits to her jaw. Despite her strikingly distinctive eyes, I think Circe definitely lies closer to the "Template-y" end of the spectrum. Another example:

Something that continues to surprise my friends is that Mercutio actually shares many similarities with Template #2. I'd argue it's much less obvious in his teen stage, but here we can see that the upper half of his face is basically identical to it. Though I'll never accept this fact myself, Mercutio is unfortunately a bit basic!

Compared to the other two, I'd say Goneril is much more "unique." Maxis definitely shot for a very sharp look for her and, in my opinion, they really cooked ngl... However, when you notice the unchanged eyes and nose, you can start to see exactly how the other template features were changed to achieve her look, which almost ruins her previously assumed uniqueness. One final example:

When the closest template is nowhere near how the Sim actually looks, that's how you know you're dealing with an entirely new species. It's quite funny to flip through the two images and watch the mouth remain entirely unchanged, though.

Even with his unchanged mouth, Loki is by far the "most unique" Sim out of these examples, and one reason for that might be the eyes and nose. At least for me, the eyes and nose are the two most defining features of a face as they sit right in the center. A significant change in either of them leads to a significant change in perception of the overall face, which may explain why Circe seems so distinctive and why Goneril seems to bear more of a resemblance to her template despite the considerable edits in other areas.

Then comes the question of well, are they Face Template Sims or not? You could argue no, that even with some features remaining the same, particularly in the cases of Circe and Mercutio, there are still enough differences to distinguish them from their presets. However, these are outstanding examples; Sims like Buzz, Brandi, Jenny, Titania, Mary-Sue, and the Singles—those often regarded as the most template-y—similarly have these small edits made to different areas of their face that may surprise you in how effective they are at creating a Sim distinct from its given template!

This is all to say that attempting to define a Sim as a "Face Template" really falls into the realm of subjectivity. The technical answer to this question, as I said before, is Veronaville. If that displeases you, perhaps because of its association with basicness, take things into your own hands and decide for yourself which Sims fall into this category.

Or, alternatively, celebrate how unique Sims can look despite their basicness! Surely I'm not the only one who didn't realize that Pascal and Lazlo have essentially the same face for a good stretch of time? Or that Ophelia and Circe are based on the exact same template? Or that Cornwall and Consort look oddly similar when you remove their facial hair… huh.
