the key to surviving grad school (also maybe life but definitely grad school) is to pick a side quest every few months or so. something that brings you joy and that you can get better at over time, independent of whether or not your research or classes are going well. put your need for academic validation to use in a non-academic setting and everything will feel less dire and you will learn you are more than your work

when they first met:
phainon: so... is black tide your only weakness?
mydei: no.
phainon: i see you're trying to get rid of me... [sad puppy noises]
--
them in 3.1:
mydei: tenth thoracic vertebrate is my weakness and the only way to properly kill me-
phainon: oh i-
--
[Update]

Now I kinda want to know what "little tricks" Phainon used when he fought Mydei for the first time.
Did Mydei's eyes widen in surprise at the trick? Seeing Phainon laughed triumphantly after, then huffed to hide his own entertained expression even for just that one moment? Or disgruntled at first, and then realized it has been a long time since he enjoyed sparring with someone?

Let’s Build a Gay Library Together!
Hello you lovely internet queers of all kinds,
As you probably know if you follow us, we are currently building our inaugural digital collection, and we are working hard to make sure that it represents and fills the needs of our patrons. To that end, we would love to get some input from you! If you have 5 minutes to answer a few questions, we would be so grateful if you took our Collection Development survey: https://forms.gle/CXJ2uncyDMDr7p1T8.
If there are other people who you can think of that might be interested in QLL, especially people who you can see signing up for a library card with us when we launch, feel free to forward them the survey as well!

How to Use Dark Academia to Romanticize Your Life
🪐⚜️📜🕯
1. Start a Language Relics Journal
Collect forgotten, archaic words and poetic phrases that feel like lost spells. Use them in your journal entries or write stories where each sentence feels like it belongs in an ancient manuscript. You’re not just learning vocabulary — you’re reviving dead languages of emotion.
2. Mythologize Your Surroundings
Turn your daily life into symbolism. A chipped mug becomes a relic from your “writer’s exile.” The shadow of your window at 4PM? A metaphor for a moment you’ll never get back. Romanticizing life through meaning-making is the most powerful kind of aesthetic.
3. Curate Your Own Library Scent
Craft a personal perfume or room aroma that smells like mystery. Mix notes like leather, black tea, old paper, tobacco, and amber. Let your space — and even your skin — smell like a lost volume from a secret archive.
4. Build Rituals Instead of Routines
Don’t just do things — sanctify them. Light a candle before journaling. Play vinyl before reading. Pour your coffee like it’s a spell. The more reverent your rituals, the more sacred your day feels.
5. Make Silence a Character in Your Life
Dark academia thrives on introspection. Learn to love the moments where nothing happens. Let silence speak. Let your thoughts echo. Write down the things you think no one would understand. That’s where your truest voice lives.
6. Read Like a Scholar of Your Own Soul
Pick books not for their hype, but because they unravel something inside you. Annotate with fury, press leaves between the pages, and make the margins your confessional. Your bookshelf becomes a biography of your mind.
7. Write Letters You’ll Never Send
To people you miss. To authors who changed you. To the version of you from two winters ago. Fill your drawer with unsent words — because expression is still sacred even if no one hears it.

my boss keeps denying my purchase suggestions for kinda-understandable but dumb reasons, so this is a reminder everyone but especially faculty and other teacher/mentor-type people at educational institutions and ESPECIALLY if you're at a religious or otherwise-constrained-by-people's-potential feelings-and-beliefs place, to suggest things you'd like to see or use at the library.
The worst they can do is say no, but suggestions from faculty and others in leader/mentor positions carry a LOT more weight than suggestions from me, the staff worker.
Signed,
A person whose request to buy a cheap D&D starter kit for our game collection was denied because we currently have no justification/basis to assume it would get classroom use and we're afraid of upsetting people who believed the Satanic Panic 35 years ago will reoccur through purchasing a leisure item with their donated money, apparently.

IMPORTANT
Hey- To those who works in museums and libraries:
Trump just signed an executive order to dismantle the institute of museum and library services
(and six other federal agencies: the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, and the Minority Business Development Agency.)
Please spread the word
